Although I am the first to admit it has lost a little of its lustre the last few years, itis STILL a highlight of my year when I can attend. Since month end is my busiest time, I cannot go until after hours, on Friday nite, July 31, to head to Cleveland for Saturday and Sunday, August 1 & 2. If you are goiung to try and make it, let the rest of us know. We tend to coordinate getting admission badges (Greg Fisher @ Cameo Cards I think is reserving 1 for us) andI think I can order 1 or 2 through Larry kerrigan if need be for around $45 for the 5 days. Since I am only going for 2 days, I will not be buying 1 myself, but will go in on 1 if others are interested. We also tend to splithotel rooms. Not sure what our record is for the most OBCers sharing a room, but if you do not mind a little (OK a lot) of snoring, it does cut down on expenses. Last year, Mark Talbot and I headed to Chicago on Thursday nite (July 31 again) WITHOUT a hotel room arranged for. Oh the way to Chicago we called John Stamper, since we heard he was going tot he national and wasstaying by himself. Not that either of us had ever met John before, but this is OBC, so that did not matter. We showed up around 1:00 AM Chicago timeand stayed up until close to 4:00 talking and meeting each other. Just another OBC experience. John was so gracious and instead of cash, we paid him off in major hits to his sets (ccards like 69 Topps Reggie Jackson rookie, etc.). He was happy to meet some OBCers, fill major holes in his set and share the room. The highlight of the National tends to be the swap on Saturday nite. Not only do cards move about the room, but getting a chance to see friends not seen for a year most likely and to meet other friends face to face. Other advantages to the National are the bird dogging others do for you at the show.No one can see everything at the show. If others know what you are lookingfor, they can call you (cell phones are a must at the show) and let you know where that elusive card is that you are looking for. Guys can also go intogether to buy big lot. Last year, we bought a huge lot of 1952 Topps, and another of T-205 & T-206. I know Sal is tired of Cleveland having seen everything there is to see there a few times now, but personally I spend as much time at the show as possible. Usually some of the guys will go to a ball game, often on Friday nite. So, even if you can only go for a day, it is worthwhile. Try and arrange to stay for the swap (1 year Mark Talbot came for the swap only and did notmake it to the show at all). Even if this year's budget is stretched, think of it as going to a museum of baseball cards. Almost anything and everything you have ever heard of is at the National to be seen. Let us know if you will be attending and we will compile a list of people going with their call phones and days of attendence. Sal, will you compile this again? Many have chimed in and indicated that they were planning on attending and some have even indicated where they would be stayingand such. I plan on attending Fri - Sun, plan on going to the game on Friday night and attending the swap on Saturday. In the past Sal Domino would have hada spreadsheet all together and we would all be checking that to see who would be there and who would not. Well, last year Sal was pretty clear that he had enough of Cleveland and was not at all excited about returning there. Up till now we have not heard from ourfriend Sal so I guess he will not be joining us this year especially sinceKent is going solo. So I am taking the initiative to develop the spreadsheet that in the past has been so helpful. I have gone through past emails and attempted to indicate all who have said they will be in attendance this year. For the most part I have no idea where anyone is staying AND I don't know if anyone is interested in the TIGERS-INDIANS game on Friday night. I will be ordering game tickets very shortly so if you are interested in the game and want tickets please let me know ASAP so that I can order them. I think I will get my order in early next week so get with me soon if interested. It is also useful to know if you will be attendingthe annual OBC Swap on Saturday evening. The location has not been determined yet but it will take place, the location is "the player to be named later". For me, the swap is a highlight of the weekend and one year I just went to the swap as the finances were very tight that year and it was GREAT to still see everyone and hear the tales of the show finds and paw through dupe boxes. So I need to know if you plan to attend the swap. I got most of the cell phone numbers from the directory but I am missing a few, this is a critical link as we "bird-dog" stuff for one another at the show. It's also great to be able to link up with others if you get lost, need a ride, want to meet up, etc... So if I do not already have that please send me that information as well. Now is the time to sound off if you are attending the National to get put on the roster. Let us know when you will be in Cleveland, where you will be staying, your cell phone number, whether or not you plan on the ball game on Friday and the Swap on Saturday. Nice enough guys, but they rarely have anything I am interested in and do not mark down the low grade cards enough usually. I stopped in last month and was able to get a greeat stack of 20 1952 Wheaties cards, 9 of which I needed. I had noticed they had a small plastic case with 1950 Bowman BB, but had run out of cash that day. When I stopped in today, they still had the Bowmans, plus I noticed a card that was hidden behind a display. I asked tosee this hidden card and asked what it was. They pulled it out, it was not marked and they said they did not know what it was, but that it was cut off of something. I asked them to price the case of approx. 29 very low grade 1950 Bowmans (no low numbers, but over 1/2 were high numbers withOUT thecopyright variations) and this unknown card. Although the price for the Bowmans was too high $2 card, if I took them all they would throw in this unknown card, for a total of $60. Now granted, the unknown card (to them) had a crease, but I still thought this was a great deal to get me a type cardfrom 1959 Bazooka BB, especially since it was of Hank Aaron! I still had $30 left in my pocket, and had found a few more items, while they were trying to price the Bowmans that were not priced. I had to have them take out a Berk Ross card of Sam Jethroe they were overvaluing, so they took the $30for a Colgan Chip in near mint shape (my seond in little over a week, since Andy Cook sent me one) and my first 1933 Delong also. 2 type cards in 1 day, plus a handful of 1950 Bowman variations and a Colgan Chip! Long story short, my truck (Explorer) needed an oil change and I needed to get a box of cards out to an OBC buddy. So my wife said leave me the Putt (our nick name for my truck) and I will run your errands for you. So I suffered and took her truck to work (Escalade) while she ran errands. After she mailed the box of cards, she was going to a nursing home to visit an old friend. She wasn't too familiar with the area and missed seeing a stop sign. As luck would have it, a '93 Chrysler was trying to occupy the same space. He T-boned her dead square in the passenger door. The truck rolled and skidded on the top as evidenced by the scrapes. All of the rear windows broke and flew out, somehow the front left quarter panel dug into the groundand caused the truck to flip again. Not one section of the exterior is salvageable. The truck came to rest with the passenger side on the ground and my wife hanging by the seat belt in the drivers side. A plain clothes cop was the first to assist her followed shortly by the EMTs. She called apologizing for wrecking my truck. I must have told her a dozen times that they made 100,000 more last year that they can't sell. But to tie it back to ball cards the story did not end with the fact that she just mailed an OBC package. After the car was up righted for it's finalride to the sheet metal grave yard, the fire fighter was getting our personal belongings out of the truck. He reached in there and got the papers, sunglasses and stuff from the glove compartment and he then said ma'am (weresouthern down here) here is a baseball card that fell under the seat. It was a 59 Eddie Kasko that I must have bought and subsequently lost after the last card show that I went to about 6 months ago. So Eddie Kasko took that scary ride with my wife and has now earned a special place in my collection. He is far too special for my binder. He knocked off some great 74s, including a Dwight Evans (I think) that disappeared in the minivan. I've searched and searched and never found it. Now I think I know to look, but I'm leaving it there even if I do find it! About a month ago, Yahoo! somehow purged all my info from their servers. Though I eventually got my email access back, they deleted everything else --my Yahoo Group memberships that allowed me to post here was wiped clean and I had to re-register -- and the Vintage Baseball Card website that had taken me years to build was whisked away into the same cyber void as many other sites before it. Trying to get the site restored turned out to be an excercise in futility. First, Yahoo's helpful customer service team told me to simply access my control panel. After explaining that a quick look at the same control panel will show them that nothing was there...they told me that they routinely purge "inactive" accounts and that my site was probably eliminated because I hadn't accessed my account for over 120 days. Not only was that not the case...I had been busy rewriting the set descriptions on my page the very week before the site was relegated into oblivion. Once they were told that...I was very nicely told to go pound sand. So...that means my site, found at http://www.geocities.com/chrisstufflestreet/ and a fixture around the hobby since 2000, is no longer there. And all the good stuff I've said about Yahoo! and Geocities over the past 9-10 years turned out to be BS. So, if I ever told you how great the services were...forget it. If you actually followed the advice...sorry. One good thing about doing the rewrites, though: I was able to back up every one of my set pages onto my computer. Unfortunately, my Newsletter Archive feature was unable to be retrieved. But the main info from my site is still available and I won't have to start again from scratch. There's a silver lining, however. Geocities was scheduled to be shut down in the fall, so I was already planning on moving the site sometime after theNational. This development only gives me the added motivation to get the job done once I get back from Cleveland. Thanks to a buddy from another hobby group...my site is back up and runninguntil I can get my own URL in place. So...for the next few months, here's the address of my site in case you've had it bookmarked: http://www.obaks.com/vintagebaseballcards/index.html (Despite the mention of Obaks in the address, he hasn't quite gotten aroundto setting up a site about those great PCL cards. Maybe I'll add that pageto my site for him). So my absence from the OBC servers is now over. Now, I just need to find mynotes...I just moved again and all the OBC packages that arrived during mydowntime still need to be acknowledged. Over the weekend I picked up a box of 1950's sports magazines and books at a local flea market at a very reasonable price from a woman about my age who said the box came from her father's attic. Much of what was in the box was Sports Illustrated, Sport Magazine and local sports stuff. What is interesting is that there are eight publications from "Big League Books" which on the back page are called "Official 1951 Baseball Yearbooks". The back page also lists a set of ten and I have the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Braves, A's, Pirates, Reds and Cardinals and do not have the Giants or Browns. Some of the books including the Yankees are called Sketch Books. Also included was a publication called "Boston Braves 1947 Sketch Book" and and another called "The Dodgers 1941 Today and Yesterday and Brooklyn Baseball". What is even more interesting is that all ten are not in OBC shape. The covers are glossy and the interior pages look old, but are not torn or writen on at all.. There is no notation anywhere that these are reprints, but I am skeptical. Does anyone know if these could be reprints or could they be real. I didn't pay much, so it really doesn't matter. I told the woman several times that I thought these were reprints and she told me several times they came from her father's attic. The box I bought was the only sports memoribilia at her booth, she said she knew nothing about the value of baseball magazines, and she did have other magazines and stuff that loked like it could have come out of an attic. Anyone got an idea if I have reprints or the real thing. Either way they are some great reading. ================= Date: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 10:54:10 -0700 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: MIKE DIAMANTI Subject: Iraqi Baseball team outfitted Well Gals and Guys: Some of you have probably seen this, but thought I would cut/paste it for those who haven't...If baseball crosses all persuasions and philosophies, here's a recent example... When Iraqis play ball, they'll don uniforms made in Seattle by Ebbetts Field, a manufacturer of "historically-inspired" athletic clothes located in Pioneer Square, has offered to outfit Iraq's national baseball team with uniforms, hats and other attire in response to a plea by MSNBC host Rachel Maddow to help the country's ill-equipped national baseball team. A July 13 story reported that the team, started by American Iraqis, had only one bat, no uniforms and just enough money to pay its fees. "I heard her say this and I thought, that's right up our alley," said Ebbets president and founder Jerry Cohen. "I thought it would be a fun thing to do -- a nice feather in our cap." Cohen is collaborating with the Iraqi team on the uniforms' design, which will be more contemporary than the vintage wool outfits in which the company specializes and made of a lighter material -- mesh -- to combat Iraq's extreme heat. The jerseys will be blue with a post-Saddam Iraqi flag on the chest and the words "Iraqi baseball on the back above the player's number. Ebbetts will also supply socks, stirrups, undershirts, pants and matching blue caps. The whole order will be worth a couple thousand dollars, Cohen said. Staff at Ebbets is already cutting and sewing uniform fabric as they wait for stirrups and hats to come in from outside contractors. The team has asked for 20 sets. Cohen thinks they'll be ready to ship by Aug. 5. The company was behind the vintage 1939 Seattle Rainiers hats Mariners players sported at a turn Back the Clock game in May at Safeco Field. Cohen isn't sure he'll ever get to see the Iraqis play. "I would love to," he said. "If I'm invited." Other companies around the country have stepped up to help the team. New York-based CTG Athletics will provide bats and gloves. FSR Star, an international trade company based in Ashland, Ohio, will handle shipping. ================= Date: Sun, 26 Jul 2009 16:33:54 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "rlabs1" Subject: anyone going to the national The dealer that I buy my cards from will be in booths 2033/2037 and 2132/2136. The day of downsizing our house is now on the horizon. In anticipation of that and what I will be allowed to take to the next stop I am looking at what will go. To start with I thought I would approach the trading group first. I have 2 display cases. These cases were built by a master craftsman and the workmanship is outstanding. The first case is a wall mounted display case. It is solid oak and measures about 7 feet across. It has 2 large glass doors that lock. The case displays 200 to 300 cards depending on how you would like to display them. I designed the case and it allows you to mount it high on the wall and still see every card. It is the nicest display case of its kind that I have ever seen. It is dust free and the glass is slightly tinted and minimizes the glare. The second is a floor case. It is also solid oak and is the same width of the wall case. It has 2 features. The bottom or front is open and holds about 25 3" binders perfectly. The top is made of 3 glass compartments to display whatever you might desire. The areas are about 3" deep and the base is covered in a very nice green felt. I use this to display autographs. I designed it and it is a perfect match with the wall case. A few traders here have been over and have seen these cases so I might solicit opinions if asked. I also have photos that I can email right along if So that is all good. The other side is they are heavy. Solid oak. 2 people have to carry them and it takes 3 to mount the wall unit. It would cost about $3-4,000 each for these today. The friend that made them for me charged me only for materials which was $1600 16 years ago. The wood alone has doubled. I would like to get the $1600 I paid for them back. I know that is a lot for something hobby related but if you ever saw them you would understand. Email me for pictures if interested. I visited a little shop in my hometown today (off of Lake Erie)--never been in it before.  The guy had some neat stuff and a box of much too nice for me vintage.  One of the neat things he had was a full box of mid 1960s hockey news.
In any case he also had some worn goudey's with prices in the neighorhood of $6-8 each.  He said he could do two for $5 each or 3 for $10.  He had nine of them and I pulled out thirty bucks and paid him.  Got home and realized they are World Wide Gum and most of them are bi-lingual.  So I am looking for a little information--and I am presuming these are much tougher than the US Goudey version?
#48 Marty McManus is the only English only card.
There are four of them with "1934 Series" and "this is one of 240 baseball stars"--bilingual--20, 33, 37, 77
and there are four of them with "1934 Series" and no "240" legend--these are bilingual too.--75, 83, 85, 86
I don't have a reference book handy.  I simply thought I was getting some beat up Goudeys with a 34 high number in the mix.
Can anyone give me a little info on these Canadian versions?

As some of you know, I like the little statues from the mid 50's that you could get at Dairy Queen, that were sold by Gould and the "Big League" brand. I've picked up some over the years--a few "hand painted" gems, a few missing bats, as well as a couple of the cards that the Gould ones came with. Recently I took a flyer on an item on Ebay that I had never seen. It looks identical to the Eddie Mathews statue. It is almost the same color as the Big League statues, but this one is made out of a fairly heavy metal. It clearly looks like it was made from the same mold as the plastic statues. I don't recall every seeing a metal one before, or reading anything about one. There are no logos, or markings of any kind (same as the plastic statue). I'm wondering if it was a prototype, or part of some promotion. Having just entered the world in 1956 I don't remember too much about that year, but some of the "more seasoned" members might. Anyone have any ideas or knowledge of this guy?
