My GBSCC newsletter states "there will also be dealers with non-sports, comics and toys to widen the selection of collectibles available" and that "this show will have a different character to it." As I described in a post earler this week, the show was advertised to have toys, comics and a "different character" than the annual fall offering. I got there when the doors opened at noon and spotted Bob Donaldson in line ahead of me. When I got in I headed to Kevin Savage's table, thinking that might be where Bob heads first. Great OBC minds think alike as there he was. Bob and I did some damage to his bargain box and then wandered around the rest of the hall. Later in the afternoon we met up with Spike Glidden and toured the facility some more. Always nice to meet up the regulars! I was pleasantly surprised by the offerings. I really didn't see much in the way of toys and comics: I guess I was expecting Legoland meets Superman but there honestly wasn't a whole lot of that stuff around. There were some new dealers there that normally don't get to do the fall show. Of course, a lot of the usual dealers were there too. The highlight of my take was finding an E220 Stan Covaleskie, knoking off a toughie in a tough set. Also found a 1972 high number in nice shape for 4 bits. Did buy some other stuff I didn't really need, too. I made a pair of trips to the Wilmington Shiner's Auditorium this weekend to look at cardboard, talk to familiar dealers, and catch with a few OBCers. Aisles felt reassuringly full of old card dealers and very few "extras" (comics, toys, etc.). Didn't buy any autographs myself, but caught a glimpse of Mike Lowell, Jason Bay, and Tony Armas signing on Saturday. Friday went well according to the dealers I asked, a pleasant surprise considering the economy. It went great for OBC, as Jim Hatch and Bob Donaldson were both around when I arrived mid-afternoon. We looked at a number of tables together and Bob handed me a pair of excellent 1939 Play Ball hits. (A short list gets shorter!) OBC-friendly dealer Randy Kniffin said he was already building a box of low-grade cards for this year's National. Speaking of the big show, it's time to snag a swap location! So long in fact, that about a dozen or so are hearing from me for the first time. The rest of you will breathe a sigh of relief that I don't have a lot of time to type out EVERYTHING you've missed since my last report ;-) Future collector and Red Sox hopeful Dominic Ryan Morganti was added to the roster on Sunday at 11:43 PM. He currently only stands 21-1/2" tall and weighs in at just a shade under 8 pounds, but he has a tremendous upside (and a lot to learn). Hopefully he will be picked in the 2027 baseball draft by the Red Sox. I'm getting a three week paternity leave from work, so I will get those hats out to the newer guys who have joined since I went on hiatus. Hopefully I will also get some order to the chaos in the basement and try to become a little more active in this group that means so much to me. However, now it's off to visit Mom and baby in the hospital, where they're recovering and doing very nicely from a relatively short, but VERY exhausting birth. Their rehab assignment is scheduled to conclude tomorrow followed by a much looked forward to trip home. I never thought that I could be there for a whole day and not bump into a hat, but it happened. If I ever know in advance that I can go again, I will try to set up a meeting. The location fooled my GPS, into which I had plugged the show's stated address, as it said I was "at my destination" about 1/2 mile too soon, and thatcaused me to waste 30 minutes figuring things out. I finally did figure it out and found the show in a large industrial building at the end of the road - a good location, free from any through traffic. My first impression while walking around was that there were almost no early vintage bargain boxes, and some dealers I spoke with said they just couldn't bring everything. Many were unsure how this show, the first time it isbeing held in the spring, would work. Others said this was their first Shriner's show. When I was leaving, dealers seemed to have mixed feelings, but the weather was beautiful and perhaps that was why the crowds were light. After expanding my search criteria, I managed to find many bargain boxes with '60s Topps material and that's what I focused on, culling through boxes until I was bleary and back-ached. Ended up with well over 150 hits from the 50 cent and under boxes. Found several minor stars, a small handful of early '50s Topps cards that will be good for the dupes box, and a decent 1970 Ted Williams. There were a handful of dealers that specialized in non-cards sport items, or non-sport card items, but not so many that it was a distraction. Actually, some of the displays were interesting. According to the amount of announcements, there seemed to be (to me) an unusually great interest in getting players' autographs (and even paying for them), but I think that is probably what goes on a lot at shows, and I just am not used to it. I overheard many dealer-to-dealer conversations while flipping through card boxes, and the frequent topics were (1) problems on/with eBay or (2) how the industry has changed from collecting to investing, and therefore how the prices of everything have gone up. My overall impression as I left was that I enjoyed myself, and probably could find another 150 cards if I had the time. The only downside was that I came home with fewer '50s cards than I might have liked. This was the biggest show by far I have ever attended, and I heard lots of talk about the National. Having gotten into this Shriner's show as a senior freebie (1 month past 62 - halelujah, longevity pays off!), I was shockedto learn that the National will cost $19/day ($15 in advance) just to get in the door - no senior discounts apparently. Spending 5 days there would take a major chunk out of my card spending allowance, and that's just for admission. I had been thinking of trying to go, but not so sure now. I wonder if there is no way less expensive to get into the show - do they ever need volunteer help for anything? In any event, I look forward to this fall Shriner's show, I will make every effort to come again! It got me thinking of some of my best/worst trading or acquisition of card stories. With my collection, I am sure you can imagine there have been some good stories over the years. One was my recounting on Monday to some old friends had to do with paper routes. We were retelling the stories of tips, etc we got, and how upset we were when the weekly subscriptionrate went up from $.90 to $1. It cost us a lot of $.10 tips. Considering that was the cost of a pack of cards for some of those years, you can seethat was big money. I had one regular customer in 1973-74 that instead ofa cash tip would give me a 6 card cello pack of 1970 Kellogg's BB. Somehow they had hundreds of these packs and knew what a big fan I was. Getting old 3D superstar cards was a tremendous tip. On the downside was 1 customer on my route was Mr. BB aka Irwin Cohen, who actually was the editor and publisher of the BB Bulletin. When I was 13 I think, he bought ALL of my dupe 1970 Kellogg's for $.02 each. That is right, essentially complete sets for $1.50 each! What did I know??? My biggest acquisition ever was again in 1974. I was just finishing my first year of middle school and a guy in my class was moving. His mother wouldnot let him take his cards with them. He offered them for sale and I was, even then, the one willing to pay the most. I bought the approximately 14,000 1968-1973 baseball cards for $9.00 and was talked into taking the other1000 or so FB, BSKB and Hockey cards for another $1.00. Transporting 15,000 cards the almost 2 miles back to my house must have been interesting butI do not recall the details of the move. In a bit of irony, my family decided to move about 3 months later and I ended up going to the same new school as the guy that sold me all his cards. That was also the first year my mom did not make me get rid of all my dupes at the end of the season. Prior to that, at the end of the year, my mom would only let me keep my singles(which were also my worst condition cards, because I played with and pawedmy singles, never needed to look at my dupes). Now I would never throw cards out, so my friends all knew where they ranked with me. At the end of the season they would line up and my best friend got my dupes, 2nd best friend the trips, 3rd best friemd, etc. all the way down until all the extras were gone. It gave my friends a strong "incentive" to be a "better" friend the next year. They could move up the list and get more cards. Enough of those stories. Let us hear some of your best/worst stories for card acquisition or disposition. All thekids in the neighborhood knew I loved the idea of collecting as many cardsas possible with no concern for condition, so eventually they simply gave me their cards. Somehow (and to this day I have no idea how it happened) an older gentlemen found about my passion for collecting, came to our house and showed me a huge box of cards (he said there were roughly 2000 cards from 1968 - 1971) he was willing to sell to me for $0.01 a card. No EEK, you're not alone. Alas, since I am only JUST NOW getting to this thread from the beginning of the year, is it any wonder thatI too, do not have a single set completed? No surprise to me, and I'm happy with where I'm at. My total is much easier to calculate from the opposite side, knowing I am "almost" close to a couple of those early 1970 sets, but NOTHING else, and those numbers FAR surpass those of what Mr. Mroz's post of missing six thousand or something. Yeah, yeah, I know, I've been stingy on the grade of those early 70's sets, but when you open up the packs of 1500 plus cards, then just put them awayin a shoe box and never "play" with them, it's hard to accept beater commons that will sit in the same box next to those pristine issues. Or is it? Alas, my collection has become stagnant, so it's probably time to rethink.I love that old saying that a hole in the card is better than a hole in the set. Perhaps it's time to live it, as well as love it. Nice job, you Out of around this 16,704 I think I am down to about 2800 to go, but I am not even going to try for the 1952 high numbers, at least not until my girlfriend actually does win the lottery, so that leaves about 2700. However, I have been working on many variations and am well along on some sets. A quick adding of the total number of cards in this run's (1952 - 1980) master sets (according to Shawn Adkins online database) gives 17,826. This would include a modest number of what he charitably calls NPDs (notable printdifferences) , in which not everyone, not even all variation collectors (meaning, not even me), is interested. So perhaps I am aiming for around 17,500 different cards for the run. Counting those variations that I am trying to collect, I would then need something around 3000. I am therefore in the ballpark, so to speak, of about 83% of the way to my goal. I wonder how many folks are working on some variation of "master" sets for this This is a fun topic for collectors. It might be fun to have a place on thewebsite for us to periodically update, maybe monthly or each January 1 or whenever, our "Cards Left in Run" number, so all the rest of us can enjoy the Richard D To: OBC-Ramblings@ yahoogroups. com From: john@holidayandhobb ies.com Date: Sat, 3 Jan 2009 17:57:17 -0800 Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] 16704 Well OBC, Very Impressive numbers by all who have posted.
