My best friend's nephew was drafted by the Houston Texans last Saturday, so I decided to add three players (all football) to whom I have someconnection to my player collection. Even several positive feedback comments read like, "Nothing Special," or, "Not a single card older than 1968," and "Box of nothing. A waste." EVERY single one of those auctions, even the ones with positive feedback, were listed as private so you can't really see what the item was, which is enough to tell me that the seller is hiding something, or trying to hide something, and that provides me with enough suspicion to pass. There were a coupleof cards from earlier years, nothing very remarkable. Perhaps there is, as advertised, a miniscule chance of getting a 52t, but I'd guess it's aboutthe same chance I have of being Pope. Have they met the standards of those from previous years? I went to a card show today and before I paid to go in and spend my money aguy walked out and said "save your money, there is nothing but junk in there". Being a full blooded OBCer I got excited when I heard there was a lotof "junk" in there. It will match my collection perfectly. But could he mean there were no singles to look through and they were only selling new boxes of cards? Having already driven my 2+ hours I plucked down the $4 andproceeded to inspect the tables. The obvious missing component was the newer Bowman singles. I usually load up on those for autographs at the ball park. But more people had vintage cards at really good rates. I picked up a 59 Mantle for $10. It is creased like every other card in my 59T set. And I really didn't care that ALL of the back of the 62T yogi card was intact. But my favorite was my 71T mission. I wanted to finish that set today and the main card of the 3 that I needed was the #709 Baylor card. I went to thefirst guy but he was obviously a Mr. Mint prot=E9g=E9. He showed me a #709 for $90 and said that he would take $50 for it. I passed telling him that the rest of my set was VG at best. He said that if you don't really mindcondition that dealer over there has one of these that someone used a sharpie on the corner. He isn't selling it, tell him that I sent you over there and that you may be willing to take it with the mark on there. So over Igo and under the table he reaches to pull out a beautiful 71T #709 with a darker black spot on the front (not a corner) where someone MAY have colored it, I still can't tell. The dealer said that he doesn't condone that type of alteration and chose not to sell it. But I assured him that it would look fine with the markers and tape that the rest of my 71s have. Believe me, no one will notice a defect on this card in my set. So he says, "how about $5". Sold! I found the other 2 high numbers and finally put that 71Tset to bed. Here is my haul for the day: (I spent ~$125) a.. 59T (2) Aaron b.. 62T (18) F.Robby, Spahn AS, Cash AS, Ford, Berra, 11 high #s c.. 64T (7) 3 high #so d.. 68T (15) 4 leaders, 2 high #so e.. 71T (3) Buckner RC, Baylor RC Have you guys seen an similar turn on your shows? Nice enough guy to talk to, but they rarely have anything I need and their prices are close to book, however, there off grade cards, are priced way too high for the condition they are in. Sometimes though, it does pay to take a look. I saw a small plastic case with some Bowmans in it, I asked to look at it. Too pricey, however, undeneath was a case with some 1952 Wheaties. Turns out there were 20 cards, including 2 Berras, a Campanella, Musial, Hogan, etc. For kicks and giggles, I asked how much for the case, expecting a minimum $200 - $300. They hemmed and hawed, and said $30. I did not haggle and took them. Prior to this case, my list showed that Ineeded 21 of the 60 in the set. I got 9 from this pick up. I got 1 of 2 1973 Fleer Big BB signs I needed. 1 of the last 3 2005 Helmar caps (crowns), a 1965 Bazooka Frank Robinson, 1963 Post BB Snider, getting meto 6 for the set, 2 1938 Goudeys (Inow have 1/3), completed my 1953 Red Man March 31 version set, a 1963 Topps Stick on variety, a 1951 Topps Ringside (now need 11), and STARTED 3 new sets; 1969 Playtime International Rugby Greats, 1926 Whos Who in Sport and 1939 Churchmans Kings of Speed set. I am also going to put the 1956 Gum Adventure set on my list. So if anyone has some from these last 4 sets, let me know. Unfortunately, I do not have any dupes to swap, but could get some more 1939 Churchmans Kings of Speed! I also picked up some more ammo for the dupe box, including some variation cards, a 1950 Bowman low number, etc. Interesting pick up was a 1969 ToppsBB Ralph Houk white letter with an autograph on it. I do not know if the autograph is real or not. For $2, I felt it was well worth it. We keep announcing when this show is held and urge others in the midwest tocome in and check it out. The purchases were from 7 different dealers andMarks fav dealer Harold was not even there. A few other dealers I frequently get stuff from did not have anything of interest this time, and I stilldid that much damage. Next show is Sunday, August 16. I hope you will consider joining us. The fronts look ok, but the backs have tape marks and what looks like extra paper from a scrap book (could be paper loss, not extra paper). I only need a couple and he is looking for approximately $50 a card. Generally, I will grab poor 52 highs for $35, so this might be a tad high. Anyone else interested? Numbers include #344 379386. When Traci "reported for duty" Monday morning, the nurses told us that the twins were going to try and feed only through nursing or the bottle. Over the last few weeks, the twins have been fed through nursing, the bottle, or through a feeding tube. Before they can come home, they have to show that they can eat without needing the tube. It's really the last obstacle for them to overcome in order tocome home. Well, the feedings went great. On Wednesday, the nurses told us that the twins would now be fed ad lib. This means that if the twins cry for food, they will be fed. The ad lib feedings have gone great as well, and it looks like the twins are coming home on Saturday! He will not need a monitor.Tra and I have to be trained to use the monitor. As long as that occurs today or tomorrow, we have the green light to come home. Both of the twins are weighing in at 5lbs 9ounces. Although we know that it will be crazy here at home, Traci andI are both looking forward to being home. Although I am the first to admit it has lost a little of its lustre the last few years, it is STILL a highlight of my year when I can attend. Since month end is mybusiest time, I cannot go until after hours, on Friday nite, July 31, to head to Cleveland for Saturday and Sunday, August 1 & 2. If you are goiung to try and make it, let the rest of us know. We tend to coordinate gettingadmission badges (Greg Fisher @ Cameo Cards I think is reserving 1 for us)and I think I can order 1 or 2 through Larry kerrigan if need be for around $45 for the 5 days. Since I am only going for 2 days, I will not be buying 1 myself, but will go in on 1 if others are interested. We also tend tosplit hotel rooms. Not sure what our record is for the most OBCers sharing a room, but if you do not mind a little (OK a lot) of snoring, it does cut down on expenses. Last year, Mark Talbot and I headed to Chicago on Thursday nite (July 31 again) WITHOUT a hotel room arranged for. Oh the way toChicago we called John Stamper, since we heard he was going tot he national and was staying by himself. Not that either of us had ever met John before, but this is OBC, so that did not matter. We showed up around 1:00 AM Chicago time and stayed up until close to 4:00 talking and meeting each other. Just another OBC experience. John was so gracious and instead of cash,we paid him off in major hits to his sets (ccards like 69 Topps Reggie Jackson rookie, etc.). He was happy to meet some OBCers, fill major holes in his set and share the room. The highlight of the National tends to be the swap on Saturday nite. Not only do cards move about the room, but getting a chance to see friends not seen for a year most likely and to meet other friends face to face. Other advantages to the National are the bird dogging others do for you at the show. No one can see everything at the show. If others know what you are looking for, they can call you (cell phones are a must at the show) and let you know where that elusive card is that you are looking for. Guys can also go in together to buy big lot. Last year, we bought a huge lot of 1952 Topps, and another of T-205 & T-206. I know Sal is tired of Cleveland having seen everything there is to see there a few times now, but personally I spend as much time at the show as possible. Usually some of the guys will go to a ball game, often on Friday nite. So, even if you can only go for a day, it is worthwhile. Try and arrange to stay for the swap (1 year Mark Talbot came for the swap only and did not make it to the show at all). Even if this year's budget is stretched, think of it as going to a museum of baseball cards. Almost anything and everything you have ever heard of is at the National to be seen. Let us know if you will be attending and we will compile a list of people going with their call phones and days of attendence. Sal, will you compile this again? Mike Rich
