There was some duplication within this lot, so I probably have 120 different ones left...that should be enough to help out OBC world! I have waited as long as 6 weeks for something to arrive from the Canadian Post. I mean I can drive to Hamilton and back to the Detroit area in 4 hours or so and I have yet to hear thatthe cards I sent to you a week ago have been received. I will start to worry in another couple weeksbut still find the service rendered by the postal system in Canada very sub-par. A least 2 items I have sent to Ken Monks (from another group) who lives in BC have been torn open bythe "customs people" and mysteriously arrived w/o all the items I sent. So you may just have to "wait it out" Gord. Some others have mentioned the insurance route andI guess if the package you sent was an actual value of 2K than I might have given that some thought, but once again I know that the Canadian Post charges an arm & a leg for this service. I have "lost" a couple of relatively expensive packages in the past 10 years, one comes to mind that I sent Bob Bannon. He wrote me (or maybe I wrote him) that he had not received something in return for a nice package he had sent and I was shocked as I HAD sent him a sizable package with a number of early star cards that simply never made it. I did not insure that package and simply had to take the loss. BTW - Bob wrote me and told me not to worry but I could not live with the fact that he would not be compensated for a very nice package due to a USPS problem so I sent him a second package ( I insured that one). All inall, with the volume of things that I have sent around the country and the world I have found that the problems have been few and far between andI do not regularly pay for additional services from the USPS. That may be risky but for the most part I just take therisk. That's my two cents - BE WELL!!! I've done some big trades and been very comfortable sending with USPS. I don't think I've ever had a package lost. I figure if a package is lost I can reimburse the receiver and still be ahead of the game with all the savings I have over the years by not insuring. The only time I would insure is when doing a large trade with someone outside the group so that I'm covered in case of loss or any funny business by the recipient. ================= To: , Date: Sat, 4 Apr 2009 10:49:55 -0400 From: obcjohn@knology.net Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Do we know this person? Honestly, it's not as bad as it sounds, though my five-year-old did break her little finger. She was actually having fun by the timewe had a room in the ER. I think we may have taken a step forward in solving the mystery of Annalise's abdominal pain. She got a bunch of x-rays, so we're waiting for the experts to consult and get back to us.) I snuck inday-trip to Seattle just to get away and de-stress a little. It worked...until I drove back home through a blizzard. But that's another story... While in Seattle, I finally hunted down the card shop that Rick Lyons had recommended some time ago: Browns's Cooperstown, Pete Brown, proprietor (115W. Galer St., Seattle). I really liked the shop and I liked Pete even more. He's sixty-eight and has been collecting since he was 10--he told me the 51 Bowmans were his first childhood set he completed. We had a great talk about cards and baseball and collectors. He told me that ten years ago, there was a card show in the Seattle area every weekend. Times have changed a bit. He also told me his perspective on the downturn in the economy and how it has impacted the card business. He is definitely in hanging-in-there mode. He also has a storewide 50% off sale on every card 1949-present except rookies, which were 25% off. I thought his prices were pretty reasonable (close to what my SCD has), so the half off made for some nice bargains. I knocked 17 commons off my 54 Bowmans, many of them ex or better, forless than $3 a card. No, I'm not talking about Tipton ex, I mean actual white borders and recognizable corners that make 90 degree turns. I know, weird, huh? Then I splurged on a 62 Topps Clemente and a 55 Bowman Rizzuto.Blew my card budget for the foreseeable future, but I rarely get into a shop, so that was a treat for me. Pete has big binders of commons going all the way back to some pre-war stuff. For those of you Northwesterners who are within range, I would recommend stopping by while the sale is on. I think it runs through the 3rd week of April, though I would call or email to make certain. I also tried to explain OBC to Pete. He is decidedly not an internet dealer and had never heard of OBC, though he knows a couple of our members. Naturally, the philosophy of the group sounded a little odd to him, but he wasimpressed. What is the process of becoming an "OBC friendly" dealer? I was thinking that here is a guy who carries the cards we're after, at very reasonable prices (at the moment cut in half), has a decent supply of both Tiptons and non-Tiptons (there's probably another term for those poor cards, but I don't want to pick on them), and is trying to hang onto his place. If I had the means, I would have bought a pile of his stuff on sale and offered it up as a dealer scum, but I decided I'd rather stay married (16 years as of two weeks from now and she still loves me; I'd be stupid to blow itnow). Among others, he had a 68 Mantle for $35. Thanks, Rick, for the recommendation. This trip was spontaneous but one ofthese days I'll have enough plan-ahead time to arrange to meet up with some member of the Great Northwest contingent, as Dave Fallen has suggested. Oh, and there is a Trader Joe's right across the street! What's not to like? Hello All, This past Sunday I met up with Ron Perry at the Redford show. He had been there a few hours beforeI arrived and had cased out the joint and indicated where I might find some deals. As a result I picked up a number of `52 Topps upgrades, some hits to my `52 Bowman set and `61 Topps HI numbers. I also grabbed SCP's for the `51Bowman, `54 Bowman and a couple `33 Goudeys. I found (15) hitsin all forthe want list and grabbed up another 100 or so cards for the dupe box. So the couple of hours I spent at the show were quite successful. After the show Ron and I drove out just north of the Palace and grabbed some late lunch at Applebee and enjoyed a couple hours of conversation. We left with enough time to get to the Palace about an hour before game-time where Ron treated me to a ticket to the Pistons/Bobcats game. The next 3 1/2 hours went by quickly with a very entertaining game and great company. The Pistons came away with a victory and we saw Wil Bynum put on quite a show with a career high effort - he was "Bynumyte" as local announcer Mason coined it. All in all a very enjoyable I want to thank Ron for the tickets and the company - I had a great time. BE WELL!!! It seems that Mike had collected these as a kid and is very close to finishing therun including variations. Mike has been upgrading postcards from hischildhood collection that had the words Riverhead, Long Island, N.Y. scratched off the card. Some of the scratchings looked like someone took aknife or straightedge to the words while others were clearly scratched with a pen or pencil. Well it seems that the lot that Mike recently purchased and had on display also have a number of these scratched off cards. We both found this strange and begs the question "What's up with that?". I was wondering if at one time Dormand moved his production facility or business offices from Riverhead to someplace else. When the move was made Dormand felt the need to scratch out the Riverhead location. This is a possible explanation but I really don't have a clue. That's why I am asking this learned group. After living in Amesbury, Wiltshire for four years, I can share a bit of my opinion about British society (Glenn, don't be offended as I wouldn't trade my British friends for anything!). The Brits tend to be like the stereotypical "stiff-upper lip" that we see in movies. Americans love to give out awards for everything - in the UK, awards are few andcriticism is more common. I'm not sure why, but it is. When I was inthe RAF, they were always amazed at the difference between the two societies. In the UK, if you didn't support the war, you didn't really care about the soldiers. In the US, the war effort might be split 50/50, but we were 100% behind the soldiers, sailors, marines, and airman with yellow ribbons and parades. This morning, the doctors told us that they had detected a heart murmur. So she is being treated for that as well. In the 4 and a half years I've lived in Milledgeville, I haven't seen much come in to his shop by way of vintage cards, but every once in a while, he surprisesme with a few. These cards were from his own collection from when he was a kid, and he finally got them back from a cousin who had "borrowed" them for over 20 years... much to his (and my) delight. You can never tell about a persons ability in sports they have never competed in. I remember one student I had in a grade 12 recreation course. He enjoyed the activity but had very little ability in the traditional sports that were taught. When we went to the ice rink to do some free skating this guy was an extremely fluid and graceful skater. He performed jumps, twists and very advancedfigure skating moves. He flabergasted most of the students and myself. Tiger has never had to demonstrate any batting ability, while playing golf. In the same way, you can't say that extremely successful batters wouldn't dowell in other sports because no athleticism is needed in batting well. Just by looking at the back of some of the baseball cards you can see that many of the players were suuccessful in many other sports while growing up. One final word.To defend golf as a sport, golfers have to hit their foul balls. ================= Date: Sat, 25 Apr 2009 23:31:08 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: One added to the list.... ...the list of OBC'er's I've met in person. Today Ken Pillion made the 2 hour trek to Cincy, & we met up at the big show there. Ken hit me with some unmentionables - one of which killed a set. Ken's a great guy; I'm trying topersuade him to hit the National since it's a fairly short drive from the Bluegrass State. Ken is the 38th OBC'er I've had the pleasure to meet. I didn't get quite as many hits from my vintage sets as I had hoped at the show (I was looking for el cheapo under-a-buck cards), although OBC-friendly dealer Wayne Johnson gave me some great deals. Also saw Chappel & Heckathorn there too & picked up a few hits from their tables. I managed to knock off a few more of my 1957's - leaving only 16 very tough cards on that list. Steve Carlton was there - and smiling - signing autographs & posing for pictures, but since I'm not into the autograph-for-money thing, I didn't head over to the autograph table. ================= To: "vct" , Date: Sun, 26 Apr 2009 19:17:24 -0400 From: "ant" Subject: Mets GAmes today It was a blistering beat down today but it was my first game at the new staduim. I have to agree with Joshua on this. I started subscribing to SCD in 1975. I went through the ups and downs, but the last 5 years have been painful to watch it die a slow death. Last year, when my subscription expired, I made the decision not to renew it. I try to keep up to date with hobby events, but SCD has just lost touch. Maybe one good article every ten issues, if that, and literally 15 minutes to read it cover to cover. Not to mention the Coach's Corner debacle. Old Cardboard is a good choice, but does not cater to beginner / intermediate collectors as much as it does advanced collectors. -----Original Message----- From: Wite3@aol.com To: kshoes@charter.net; obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, 29 Apr 2009 6:11 pm Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Sports Collectors Digest----IS it worth it I say no...it used to be a magazine that was great but in the past few years it has become a haven for Mr. Mint, Coaches' Corner (an auction house that is so horrible I do not understand how they have not been closed down), and others...every once in a while is there any content worth getting. Now here's a good topic. I'm a bit biased since I write for SCD, but have also written for Old Cardboard - and about anyone else who will print what I have to say. It has always surprised me that more people in our group don't subscribe to both SCD and Old Cardboard. Despite the shortcomings, SCD is quite the bargain at $25 to $40 per year for 52 issues. There are fewer ads but I haven't bought anything from their ads in years anyway. I like it because it has a wide range of info regarding vintage collectibles and gives you the hobby news. Information I've gleaned over the years regarding variations, hobby pioneers, collections, and issuers has come in a large part from SCD. Editor TS O'Connell is a pleasure to work with. He has not tinkered with my articles and has always been very encouraging. In particularly the last year, he has written a greater portion of the articles himself and a greater portion of the articles deal with vintage. They have been covering the 50s and 60s pretty extensively. It has gone from 200 plus pages to maybe 36 in a week but that is still a lot of text for 50cents a week. I like the idea of supporting one of the only publications for our hobby. You also get their info on-line as a subscriber, if that's what you like. Old Cardboard is about the same price - but with only 4 issues per year. Their emphasis is on pre-1950 material. Tim Newcomb and I have both written for them. I don't know if they are paying their writers now; they didn't initially. Also they were less hands-off as to what you write. In general, their advertisers are too high-priced for my interests. Their magazine is well done, informative. It is great to see it succeeding. Many of my recent SCD articles are on the OBC Library page thanks to Joe Isaac and previous webmasters. I'm finishing an article for SCD this week regarding an incredible find of cards from the 30s by someone who is looking to sell them and has not committed to anyone. The article will appear in a month or so and then probably be on our OBC website. One bit of advice is that if you can't decide between 2 choices, do both: SCD and Old Cardboard! It's better than none. Thanks to John McLaughlin for the nice plug. George Vrechek ================= Date: Fri, 01 May 2009 02:42:35 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "T.J. Tavin, who was put on oxygen on Friday, was taken off the oxygen Tuesday. He hadbeen having episodes where he would forget to take a breath. This is something that they call "normal" for premies that are born this early. I have told the nurses that there definition of normal is much different than mine. Anyway, the oxygen has helped to regulate his breathing, and since he has been off the oxygen on Wed, he has had very few episodes. Danika continues to get stronger and stronger. On Thursday morning, she was taken off the oxygen as well. This was the first time since she was born that she was not receiving any assistance with her breathing. She has responded very strongly. Both of the twins continue to eat well, and Tavin is quickly approaching the four pound mark. He has some catching up to do, weight wise, with his sister as Danika is weighing in at 4.9. My wife Traci continues to do well. SHe is a very active person, and has had a difficult time both with the bedrest, and the recovery from teh cessarian. Thanks to all for the prayers. Please keep them coming. ================= Date: Fri, 01 May 2009 06:17:47 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "mikerw7" Subject: Traveling Again Hi, esteemed colleagues.
