The work was done by a company in England who are subcontracted by Costco. The purchase was made through the Costco website but I was able to negotiate directly with one of the guys at the printers in order to get things just right. The image I used was one that I found on the web rather than a scan of my own card. It proved too difficult to scale up without losing image resolution. As it was, the image I sent was only about 350k. They recommend an image of at least 1M file size in order to guarantee good results. However, the company agreed with me that the type of image, its colors, and its already "canvassy" effect might just work, so they agreed to give it a try on the basis that if I didn't like it, they'd give me my money back - completely contrary to their normal policy as it is quite definitely the customers responsibility to provide an acceptable image file to work from. Best of all was the price. Photo-to-canvas prints are very popular over here, but most companies charge ridiculous amounts. Costco are definitely going for the mass market, and undercut almost everyone else by about 75%. Anyway, I'm sure you'll agree that the final result is pretty damn good! And I can tell you that it looks even better up close! I had never been there before, but it was easy to find, even though my GPS missed it by about =BD mile. People were already lining up as I pulled in to park 45 minutes early, and I became curious at the composition of the crowd - lots of girls and mothers! I thought, "Wow, the NYC area must have an unusually sophisticated audience of sports cardcollectors!" Turns out, after waiting =BD hour in the wrong line with about 100 families, I find out they were also having a reptile show in the same building, and the sports card show line (2 people - both old guys) is "over there, fellow". So I do get in, as they opened the doors not 1 second before 10am, and the show is in the basement, a large non-descript concrete bunker crammed with dealer tables and narrow aisles. I score a few commons from Jim (Sports Cards and Memorabilia) from PA, when I run into Rob Gioia and Bob Bannon. Bob says, "I could only find one card to hit your wantlists." I say, "But it's a '52 Mantle, right?" He says, "Not exactly, but you got the name right." And he hands me a 1962 #318 - The Switch Hitter Connects - Mantle card. My day is off to a great start! Unfortunately, the 2 cards I had for him were only 1964 commons, and evenworse, as I found out later, I must have misread his wantlist because he had them both! I still need to make amends for that . but, God willing, there will be time. Bob had to leave right away, but Rob and I browsed around and ended up back at Jim's table (who Rob already knew), where I picked up a 1955 Berra inperfect OBC shape, and also 2 interesting 1963s, 42 and 94, with blank backs! I only know what numbers they are because I have both cards with the regular backs. Jim said he picked up 5 from someone and just had these 2 left. As a variation junkie, I snapped them up and now wonder if anyone knows what these are, and, more importantly, how many others exist? Rob soon left and I wandered some more, picking up a couple variations from Frank Tolocka (Rookies and Stars Sports) before leaving. Dealers were telling me that Friday was good, Saturday was slow, and Sunday looked to me to be moderate at best. On the way out I passed a teen with a tiny python in a Dixie cup (beautiful colors and extremely smooth scales), amidst dozens of other parent-chaperoned kids with plastic cups containing just-bought reptilians. On the way to my car I passed a small stream bordered by trees and weeds, and a solitary duck in the water. I wondered about the world: plenty of kids buying exotic pets in the market, but how many are out in the backyard, finding what lives nearby for free and fun? I managed to avoid falling asleep in the end-of-holiday traffic leading away from the city back to my small town in the sticks, and, with about 25 new cards to my name, called the day a success. The Bears continue to disappoint, but the Blackhawks are making it worth watching ESPN. We get games piped in throughout the week, usually replayed withoutcommercials and the boring parts cut out. Cutting the boring parts out of a Bears game let's you watch it in about 12 minutes - five Cutler interceptions and move on to the next game. Christmas will be here soon - although not a big event outside the gates asyou can imagine. There is the sprinkling of trees around the chow halls and MWR tent. We have bands and comedians come through now and again - mostly people you've never heard of, but good to see none-the-less, and appreciated that they take their time to come over. I was in the Chow Hall the other day and the Hooter's Dream Girls came in to eat - they were on their way around the theater to boost morale - I must say, Bob Hope would never have had a chance against them... First, some of the writeups on the back mention things that happened in the middle of the 1964 season. Tony Oliva was leading the lead in batting after several months, Bunning's perfect game, and Moose Skowron being traded in July. This tells me that these cards were issued very late in 1964. Does anybody know exactly when? I know that high numbers in the regular sets sometimes refer to April or May of that year, but I've never seen July mentioned. The other observation is that Cepeda's card says that in his rookie year, he led the NL with 38 triples. This of course would be an all-time record. He actually led the league with 38 doubles. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Fri, 11 Dec 2009 17:47:29 -0500 From: dsh46@aol.com Subject: Re: 64 Topps Giants I believe the Topps Giant All Stars were issued in conjunction with the All Star game in 1964, which was held at Shea Stadium in New York. Well, all in all I think 2009 has been a reasonably successful year for me in terms of my card collection. Cardboard has flown in from OBCers, ebay, and other dealers (particularly Mike Wheat and Kurt Tourdot). Here's a briefrundown on how things have gone: 1960T "birthyear" set COMPLETED! - I went into the year needing only 2 cards (Mantle & McCoveyRC).....knocked 'em both off fairly early. 1961T - 21 hits including Mays, Yaz, Musial, Koufax, Banks, Clemente, MantleIA, MantleMVP, Berra, BrooksAS, and FordAS. Still 71 to go. 1962T - 30 hits including FordIA, Drysdale, FRobinson, and a bunch of hi#s courtesy of Bob D'Angelo. 35 to go. 1963T - 11 cards knocked off this one, including Aaron andCepeda. 33 to go. 1964T - 23 cards down, including PiniellaRC,Stargell, Clemente, HortonRC. 48 togo. 1965T - 31 hits including MorganRC, Brooks, Aaron, Gibson, Yaz, Killebrew, Berra. Only 22 to go.....my next target set? 1966T - 20 hits including the JenkinsRC and 7 of those pesky hi#s. 52 to go. 1967T - 10 hits leaving 58 to go, mostly the tough hi#s. 1957-1959T - I added these sets in order to have a commons to shoot for, and early returns show 18, 58, and 135 cards present in each respectively. One of my best buys of the year was the 1957T #1 Ted Williams for a whopping $18 from Mike Wheat. Tigers cards - Old Tigers have been hard to come by this year, but I did manage to knock off the 1962T Norm Cash Stamp, and a 1969T Super Willie Horton. UV stuff was a different story.....I added literally hundreds of those!! Bobby Thomson cards - A few new Thomson cards rolled in including a 1949 Eureka Stamp, a '52 Bowman, and several UV issues. UV - My big focus was on the 2009 Topps Heritage set with its 1960 design. I've got this down to 12 cards to go (not including the SP "variations"). 1969/70OPC - Only 4 hits leaving 70 to go. 1969/70T - 53 big hits. Just 16 to go. 1970/71OPC - Just 2 hits. 93 to go. 1970/71T - 19 hits. 20 to go. 1971/72OPC - 19 hits. Still 109 to go. 1971/72T - My second COMPLETED vintage card set, the last 2 being Bobby Hull and the DrydenRC. 1972/73OPC - 14 hits but still a massive 263 to go. 1972/73T - 16 hits, 18 to go. Red Wings cards - Found several of these, including 6 54/55P, 2 60/61P (Howe & Delvecchio), 2 64/65T Tallboys, 6 65/66T, the last 5 66/67T, a 71/72T Howe, and a 69/70OPC Howe. 1969T - 65 great hits bringing that list down to 38 to go. 1970T - 12 hits. 28 to go. 1971T - 6 hits, leaving only the BradshawRC to go. 1972T - 10 hits. 105 to go, mostly hi#s. In addition to the items above, OBCers have sent me several UV cards (special thanks to those who hit me with packs of 2009 Topps Heritage), schedules, books, and autographed cards. I never get tired of finding an OBC envelope in my mailbox. So, thanks to all of you for making 2009 a very successful year for me in terms of my little hobby. I hope 2010 brings you all lots of great cardboardtreats! For me, I would hope to get close on my 1965T Baseball set, the 1969/70T and 1970/71T Hockey sets, and finish off the 1971T Football set Oh, and if the planets and starsalign in just the right way, who knows, I may even meet some of you in Baltimore for the National! I'm collecting the 1968 MB bright yellow backs and have found that some cards are easy to find and some are hard to find. Same thing on the football. I knew my wife was probably getting me a card, as she usually picks up a T202, T205, or something for me each year. Sure enough, see got an assist from Mac to send me a T202 "Devlin Gets His Man" with Chief Meyers and Christy Mathewson- a very sweet addition to the list! The surprise came from the rest of the package - I was not expecting an OBCHoliday Exchange since I wasn't able to participate, but that didn't stop you guys from making my day! The Exchange is my favorite gift under the tree each year (shhh...don't tell anyone else I said that), usually opened at midnight after putting Santa's foot prints down and sitting on the coachwith two fingers of Glenmorangie. This year I had to substitute the Scotch for a 3-mile run in the desert at 0600...not quite the same. Christmas just doesn't pack the same punch in the Muslim world...but you guys suredid...here's what showed up under my tree, disguised as a present from thekids: Two T202s - a PSA6 gem with Hoblitzell and Grant, and a sweet "Sullivan Puts Up a High One" with Groom and Gray! A T213 of Doc Hoblitzell - my first ever T213, and of my favorite pre-war guy! A total of four 1952 Topps Cubs and Red Sox cards - all in great shape! A T205 Leon Ames that had been liberated from it's SGC holder, as it still has the tag! A 1962 Post Ron Snato - my HOMer! And a 1977 book with Cubs cards in it, with my old favorites like Ivan DeJesus, Bill Buckner, the Reushel brothers, Sutter, and Kingman! Are you kidding me?!? What a remarkable Christmas gift to a place I didn't think Santa even visited! I see there was an assist from non-OBCer Lee Behrens (the usual culprit in finding my wife T202s!), so I've included himon this email as well. To everybody in OBC and Lee, thanks for making an otherwise depressing day away from family something to smile about! One quick story before I sign off from this week: I'm was at the Ministry of Defensetrying to coordinateair assets withmy Arab counterpart. Our US Colonel was talking about the overall effort and in his comments he said "Let's make sure we're all singing from the same sheet of music." Like any American, he talks too fast, assuming the Arabs can keep up with our English. Evidently, my Arab buddy didn't quite catch it, as he leaned over to me and said in his thick Arabic accent, "What doesthismean...we are all singing the same shitty music?" I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, and I'm looking forward to gettingback and hitting OBC lists again!! Only a couple more months to go... That way I read all about the OBC love that has been spread around. And this posting will go to Ramblings as well, because I couldn't figure out if it should post as Thanks or Ramblings, and it fits both, so that's what I will do. And I'm trying to pick up some of the Morganti slack when it comes to longish postings..... My Secret Santa this year was Mark Talbot, and Mark surprised me with a nice little paperback, "The Complete Super Bowl Story: Games 1-XXIV" (For the Latin-challenged, it's One through 24 or 1967 through 1990.) And Mark studded the book with old cardboard bookmarks like a 54 Ted Kluzsewski and numerous FB cards. Thanks, Mark!! What really got me, though, was the timing. Earlier in the fall, my son Trent and I traveled to Spokane so he could take the Foreign Service Officer exam, and while we were there, the Vikings, led by Brett Favre, took on the Packers, for the first time with Brett at the helm. It was a great game and I talked with my son about the glory years of the Vikings when they used to dominate their division with Fran Tarkenton, Alan Page, Carl Eller etc. They made FB unbelievably exciting. Which brought me back to my agony of being a Viking fan and watching them go down in flames three times in the Super Bowl. But it was only when I paged through the book Mark had just sent me that I realized I was making the damage less traumatic by a game. The Vikes lost the Super Bowl FOUR times: Kansas City 1970, Miami 1974, Pittsburgh 1975, Oakland 1977. 1977 was when I stopped watching pro football. Now I'll watch a couple of the exciting playoff games and watch the SuperBowl to see the advertising, but when Bud Grant couldn't win the big one...that was it for me. I'm not whining -- there's just so much a fan can take. This year I'm rooting for all the Viking(Packer?) fans who hope the Purple People Eaters make it to the big game. They'll just have to show me.... Diowmontee (whatSeahawks?!) in sunny but chilly Coupeville PS Thanks for the "shitty music" story Geno. But he continued the conversation and asked me what kind of cards that I collected. Naturally the conversation migrated to the old stuff. He asked me if I had ever heard of Ted Kluszewski. Sure I said, he was the big 1st baseman for the Reds in the 50s. The gentlemen smiled and shared this story. He was a freshman at West Virginia University in the early 50s and was pledging into a fraternity and they had to go thru "hell night". Each was assigned a task to complete for their initiation. Tom's (guy behind the counter) task was to obtain an in person autograph from Ted Kluszewski that weekend. He had to complete the task with only $1. He found out that the Reds were at home and started thumbing for a ride to Cincinnati. Luckily he hookedup with a truck driver going all the way. When the driver let him off at the truck stop, Tom walked before hailing a cab. With only $1 he knew that he couldn't afford a ride, but he hoped to learn where Ted Kluszewski lived. The cab driver liked his story and felt sorry for an 18 year old boy on such a mission and gave him a ride to Ted Kluszewski's house. So the young man walked up to the door and knocked. He said that when Kluszewski came to the door, he was terrified. He said the only thing he noticed was the huge arms that he feared would pummel him when he asked for his autograph. But things quickly changed when Kluszewski invited him in and asked if he was hungry. Ted was getting ready to fix his own lunch since his wife was gone. He fixed the young autograph seeker a polish sausage sandwich and they sat and chatted about the task that the young man was given as a pledge to his fraternity. Big Klu gave him several autographs. But then he stressed that it was dangerous for the young man to hitchhike back and he gave the boy $50and told him to ride the bus home. When the young man got home, he scrapedup $50 to replay big Klu. He said that he mailed Klu a stack of $5s and $1s that totaled $50. In a few days, he received an envelope with a crisp $50 bill in it with a note the said, I gave you that money and am an not looking to be repaid. And he signed the note Ted. Though the two men never met again, they continued to exchange letters and Christmas cards until Ted Kluszewski passed away in 1988. Now this young man is ~70 years old. He is a part time college professor at a local community college and fortunately for me, he has an antique shop. He went on to earn his doctorate from West Virginia and has retired to coastal North Carolina. He is a part time college professor at a local community college and fortunately for me, he has an antique shop. We talked for over an hour while my wife looked at the goodies in thestore... or is that Goudey? As our conversation rambled we started talking about how the players today are so different. Can you think of ANY player today that would do the same as Big Klu? Thanks for the long read and take care during the weekend and thru New Years! It is a Milton Bradley game called "Win a Card". The box is a little beaten up, but on the inside it appears to have an unopened box of original cards. I've been reading about the item and it sounds like it has over 70 baseball cards (1968 Topps cards that are slightly more yellow on the back and are the Milton Bradley variation). These 70 cards should include the likes of a Ryan rookie, Mantle, Carew, Seaver, Brooks Robinson, Aaron etc. In additionto that the box should include about 35 1967 Topps (Milton Bradley) football cards including one by the name of Namath. The additional cards are referred to "Hot Rods". To read about this game check out this site. http://www.nearmintcards.com/blog/2009/11/24/1967-topps-football-cards-in-the-1969-milton-bradley-win-a-card-game/ If this game is complete then all of these cards should be in there untouched. I'm asking people to guess on what this baby will sell for. I'm guessing $600, but its already over $200 and the big boys always do their bidding in the last few seconds so who knows. I would love to get it as a Christmaspresent, but won't be seeing this one under the tree. Besides if I did winit, it would probably kill me to not open the cellophane wrapper and be the first to hold the Ryan, Namath, Mantle and others. WOW By the way, I will throw in a snipe at the end of the auction, but if Idon't get it I would love to see someone in OBC get it. I like to add just a little bleach to the water I use a small pail so there is about a 1/2 gallon of water in there. After about 10 minutes or so (sometimes less) the paper can be easily "slid" right off the card. Then I gently rub the back of the card with my thumb, I can usually feel the tackiness of the glue residue and stoprubbing when I do not feel it any more. When this is complete I blotexcess water with a paper towel and then prepare to flatten the cards. I do this by placing the cards face down on a piece of wax paper on a flat surface, then I place a couple pieces of paper towel and another piece of wax paper. I continue the process until all the cards I am "soaking" are set up for pressing, then I place weight on the cards (books, boxes of cards, anything heavy). After 48 hours or so I remove the weight and let the cards "air out" for and hour or so, then I set up the pressing again use new paper towel blotter paper and this time for as long as a week sometimes (or whenever I get to them). By now the cards will be quiteflat and presentable. I find that the wax paper actually adds a slight layer of wax to the front of the card, if this is acceptable to you just leave it alone, if you want that removed use one of your wife's discarded nylon hose and gently rub the card with the hose. The small bit of bleachI use help to eliminate the "moof" smell that some older cards have and that these might obtain if not dried properly. The process is time consuming but I have used it to remove scrapbook paper remnants with great success for quite some time. This process can also be used with other types of glue like mucilage, the paper usually comes off but the soaking time is longer and usually there is some glue that had permanently bound to the cardboard and although the card will not be sticky the "glossy" appearance of theremnant glue remains. There is probably some organic solvent (like acetone, benzene or toluene) that will remove this glue but it may do damage to the cardboard, not to mention the volatility and carcinogenic nature of these compounds. So I would stick to the H2O treatment. Another thing I would note is that the grey stock used in Bowman and early Topps cards fair rather well with this technique but "lighter colored" stock used in the `60's and beyond will be slightly discolored because they have incurred water damage. The discoloration will be uniform and therefore not too noticeable but it's there, I find thatthe bleach helps to minimize this effect as well. Well I hope you found this long winded response helpful - BE WELL!!! I'vebeen a part of this group now for a little over 9 years and my buying habits have changed a great deal in that time. One of the things I did early on and continue to do today is purchase group lots of cards. I aminitially looking for some items for my own collection and then the "extras" come in handy for spreading around in our unique OBC fashion. As you might imagine I kept more of those cards 9 years ago and I find it much more difficult to find group lots that satisfy me as much now a day. Which leads me more toward your specific situation, do I purchase single higher priced cardseven if I do not need them and the answer is "it alldepends". Sometimes it's a "no brainer" - like when I'm thumbing through a 25 cent box and pull various HI number cards that I know will be on somebodies list. The price is right, the likelihood that I can use them is high - it's win-win and it's just the OBC thing to do. Then there are the BIG BOYS - Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Koufax, Ryan, etc..., these cards are always in demand but the price is often more than I want tospend on dupes, so it has to be a very good deal, perhaps something I knowthat I know will be on one of the "tough" lists (you know guys like Hattox, Miller, Morgan, etc...), perhaps it will upgrade what I already have or maybe I can get the dealer to add some other superstars in a group lot for an even better deal overall. I will say this Rick, there is no better feeling than to read a thank you post for a key card that you have sent someone. The feeling goes both ways as I still have a fond recollection of holding in total disbeliefthe `68 Koosman RC that Bob Schaub sent me 8 years ago to finish the set or the `57 Mantle from Lynn Miller just a few months ago (just to name a few because there are a lot of guys who have passed on great cards my way - Rich, Hattox, Bannon and so many others among them). To be able to spread that kind of "feel good" message with a piece of cardboard is something very unique to crazy collectors such as ourselves. One of the overriding statements used in OBC is "what goes around comes around" and this is another very good reason for purchasing highly sought after cards that you do not personally need. Simply put - if you want to get a surprise Mantle or Mays card in a RAOK then you should also be prepared to do the same for others. This of course requires you to have some of these cards available which means you usually have to buy them. It also should be pointed out that some of us (myself included) from time to time work out trades for highly sought after cards that create a win-win situation for both parties. I realize that this is not the OBC way but it is practical and needs to also be considered when you are looking at spending a finite amount of cash to advance your own collection and help others at the same time. So there are a lot of good reasons to purchase highly sought after cards even if you don't need them. So as I see it - welcome to the club Rick you are well on your way to understanding the true OBC spirit. Now with all that let it be known that card #513 from the `71 OPC set is on my list as a card that I need (what a shameless plug) and truth be told I wouldn't mind getting that card in the mail at all. But that's the beauty of it Rick, there are many guys in this groupthat would say the exact same thing. Thanks for listening - BE WELL!!! I have always thought more than one of a given card is a waste so I have never bought a card just because it is a good deal if I already had I wasn't interested no matter what the cost. I have bought cards for people from looking at their wantlist but that doesn't count. You long time traders have probably been doing it for years so this is probably not interesting to you. But it got me thinking what you guys have bought just because it was a good deal that you didn't need. My card is a 1971 O Pee Chee Nolan Ryan. I remember someone from the group hearing from Mr. Bearden's daughter. Since my mom and dad live up here, and I know Mr. Bearden died in 2004, I was just curious to remember what the follow-up from his daughter relative to our group was. I had not seen the cards before, but through some email exchanges with Erik, I learned that they were from the 1910 T218 set. Little by little, I have added to the set. Some comingfrom Mark Talbot, and others coming via ebay. The set contains some of the superstar athletes of the day, including track, boxing, billiard, bowlingand my favorite, walkers. I love reading the bios on the backs of these cards. I currently have over 30 t218's in my collection. I also have a half dozen dupes. My love of baseball cards had returned, and I started reassembling my childhood collection with a beat up 1952 card of Eddie =93shot by a crazed girl=94 Waitkus. I write this morning because I am very close to completing my Topps run, and wanted to share with all my old and new OBC friends. Earlier this month my kids asked me what I wanted for Christmas and my birthday, and for the first time I told them cash. Cash so I could purchase some of the few remaining cards on my list. So I knew I had some extra =93coin=94 on the way. I have a friend Dave at work who is a collector, but he has slowly been selling off his cards, and I ran into him at one of the very infrequent card shows here in Jacksonville. I was very surprised to find a dealer there who had some off grade cards, and easily spent my $100 budget, mostly on some needed Bowmans, and also a handful of 1954 Red Heart cards (which are now on my list). I first noticed my friend Dave handing over a couple of slabbed cards to this dealer, so the dealer can view them for possible purchase. One of those slabbed beauties was one of the few cards I needed for my Topps run, a 1952 Topps Mays. A VERY solid VG+++ card, and Dave wants $150 from the dealer! So I am having a cow, this beautiful =93bargain=94 priced 52 Mays is in reach, but the dealer has his hands on it. Am I wrong in thinking =93it=92s his deal=94 =93man I want that card, but he has first shot at it=94. I felt like butting in, but it=92s Mr Dealers move. And of course he bought the card. We all have stories of the one that got away. So Christmas rolls around, and the old Guru has $400 to try and knock a Topps card off the list. I am able to complete my 1952 Topps (NO HI#s) by purchasing a =93not even close to being as nice as Daves=94 water stained 52 Mays from a =93buy now=94 or =93best offer=94 on Ebay for $175. Most I ever paid for a card, but hey, it was a Christmas gift! Then Dec 28, my OBC Secret Santa gift arrives from Mike Rumley-Wells, a 1957 Topps Bobby Richardson, which completes my 1957 set! And I=92ve still got $225 Christmas cash! Last night I pulled the trigger on a 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax rookie, graded BVG 3 (which I think is Beckett Grading Service). Dealer accepted my offer of $204 another new record for the most amount I ever paid for a card. I may have to get some advice on getting that Koufax out of that Beckett =93coffin=94 lol. So I am down to just SIX needed cards to complete my Topps run. Here are the remaining cards I need, with a side note of what I think I might have to pay on eBay to acquire them. 56 Mantle $200...55 Ted Williams $100...55 Aaron $95...55 Snider $70...56 Clemente $60...55 Hank Bauer $30 Guess what I am going to ask my kids for Christmas next year? PS I=92ve still got $21 in Christmas money, already had one rejection =93buy it now=94 for that needed 55 Hank Bauer! ================= Date: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 00:36:03 +0000 (UTC) To: familytoad@comcast.net From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Removing Glue You crack me up!!!
