I searched my parents house for the boxes of cards from my collection, and found most of them. Unfortunately, I did not find every box, as I vividly remember having a Topps Super of Tom Seaverand Luis Aparicio. I knew I hadn't found my 1978 Fleer football cards. My Elvis cards, my KISS cards, and my Star Wars cards. After some thorough searches, I gave up on the cards. I thought my mom may have actually sold them at a garage sale, although she denied this claim. As the years have gone by, I have pretty much given up on those cards, although when I am looking for something in my parents' basement, I still feel that I might find them. This past Labor Day, the cards were found. I wentinto the back storage room in my parents basement to look for some toys tobring out for my son to play with. A box that had the label "baseball cards" caught my attention. I opened up the box and WOW!!!!!!!!!! There theywere. Although the Seaver super wasn't in there, there were far more cards than I remembered. From the vintage side, there were close to a dozen 1970 supers, with a 1970 Reggie Jackson being a highlight. A dozen deckles, a couple of dozen commons from 69-79, and a few cards that were cut up, like a 78 home run leaders card, cut in half and taped back together. (to make sure all the players were put with their respective teams, I used to cut all leader cards and rookie cards). I found Hostess and Kelloggs cards from almost every year they were issued. I have always liked those sets and have thought about adding them. This is the push I need! There were also a number of vintage football, mainly Bears cards from 73-80, and a couple of hundred Fleer football cards from the late 70's to early 80's. Perhaps the greatest find was coming across some Harlem Globetrotter cards, both from Fleer and from Coco Puffs. The Globetrotters were always a favorite of mine. I loved when they were on Wide World of Sports taking on the Generals. The cards happen to be from 1972. I have always thought aboutadding a birthyear basketball set to the collection. Looks like I will beadding two. I don't know much about these sets, so if anyone has some info, please pass it along. There were also a number of non-sport cards included. Elvis! KISS! Star Wars! I can't tell you how much fun it was to find those. I also have cards from Charlie's Angels, Mork n Mindy, Battlestar Gallactica, Welcome BackKotter, Grease. Probably a handful more that I can't recall right now. At some point, I will get a list together and offer most of these up to the group. I am most certainly adding a few of these non-sport to the collection. I also uncovered a couple of hundred uv cards and stickers. Most are oddball sets that I won't bug anyone with right now. Again, I will be adding some sets to my list, and offering up others. If you've made it this far, maybe you'll be excited to know that I also found some Strat-O cards and an APBA season. Along with All-Star baseball, those games provided hours and hours of fun. Overall, it was just a great find that brought back a lot of memories and really made it a great Labor Day for me. As I mentioned before, I will be adding a few sets to the wantlist. Kelloggs, Hostess, some non-sport. This will be in addition to the remaining Bowman sets I would like to add, along with that 1952 Topps set. Now, all that I need is four or five more hours built into every day. I was in contact with seller, he was good about getting back to me, assured me he went it, but nothing arrived. It wasn't a great price that I got on the item, but I felt it was market value, and it was an item I really wanted - one of the last 47-66Exhibits I needed to complete a set. Anyway - after a couple of months, we gave up. It was insured. He refunded my money, and he filed the insurance claim with Post Office. I forgot about it, bought the card again from another seller. Another two months or so went by, about four months altogether since the initial sale - and believe it or not - the envelope showed up!!! Postmarked exactly the day the seller said it had been. Only the Post Office knows where that envelope was for four months...... Honest man that I am, I contacted the seller, asked him what he wanted to do. Had I not already re-boughtt the card, I would have kept it and re-paidhim, but I didn't need it anymore. In thousands of transactions I have had only about a half dozen times when the buyer claimed it never arrived. Twice I could determine via tracking that the postal service had lost the book. On all the other occasions, at least 4 or 5,when I sent the buyer the tracking info showing that it had if fact been delivered they responded that after checking they found the book under a stack of mail....someone else had gotten the mail and forgot to tell them....they were getting my item mixed up with someone elses...etc., etc. With ebay's new policy of not allowing the buyer the option of adding insurance I'm sure some buyers will still email a request for it. Bids have been coming in, but there are still a lot of good deals to be had! Individual updates were just sent to the guys who had placed bids, to show them which ones they had the high bid on, and which ones they had been outbid on. Also to show what their current max was for each item. I won't be able to do this again before the auction ends, so if you are bidding again, please make sure to hit REFRESH on the bid sheet page to be sure to have the latest bid amounts. I will be at an interview for a youth ministry this evening (YAY), so there may be a few hours between updates. And I will be at church tomorrow. But I will try to keep up. Please be patient - all bids are processed in the order the email is received. I send things out insured, just to keep things honest, and will send that info to the other party if the delivery time is not within reason. A general observation is that the quality of service from the various shippers (post office, Fed Ex, UPS, etc) is deteriorating, and I don't think it's going to get better anytime soon.... Anyway, here goes. I just recently bought the '56 Topps Mantle card #135. It hasn't even arrived yet, but, when it does, it will bring my wantlist for the '56 Topps set down to one card - the second checklist. When I look at the listings for the '56 set, they indicate that there are two unnumbered checklists - 1/3 and 2/4. Since the one I have lists the first half of the set, I am assuming that it is the "1/3," and that the "2/4" card lists the second half. My question - Why are they listed as 1/3 and 2/4? I also wonder if anyone has any leads on the 2/4 card since acquisition would mean that I have completed the set if I don't pay any attention to variations (gray and white backs), which does not tend to mean much to me. Appreciate any help with this. Or is there any way to prove whether this card actually exists? VERY curious, Hotmail: Trusted email with Microsoft=E2=99s powerful SPAM protection. OBC world, I cannot believe it but it's been almost a month since I met Maury. I promised to write a "Ramblings" message when I got back home..and the time has simply eluded me. In fact, this email is a result of several different edits...I've been going over it for quite awhile before deciding it was ready to click "SEND" As an Engineering Manager ( now mostly Advanced Video Engineering) for a large cable company, sometimes...not often...but sometimes, there are some pretty cool fringe benefits. I've been in the Fox Sports luxury suite for baseball and football games in Seattle, get home plate tickets for the AAA Portland Beavers and get a few business trips and meals thrown in. This fringe benefit tops them all! Ok, so as I mentioned before this whole thing started, I'm involved in the SCTE . It is the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers. This year our annual "convention" was a special 15th year anniversary, so the chapter leaders (I am the vice-president) decided to go big. Maury Wills is director of PR for Mainline, Inc. They are a vendor of cableproducts based in So. California. One of the guys on our board of directors reps some of their products and made some calls... Fast forward to the week just before Maury is scheduled and booked to be the keynote luncheon speaker. My buddy Paul calls and says "Hey, I have to pick up Maury on Tuesday nightat the airport, let me get a few guys together and we'll have dinner!" Dinner with Maury...of course I can make it!!!! SO...that day finally arrives, and in the hotel lobby we gather waiting forour dinner reservation time. Maury comes in and gets a seat not too far from me. I quickly get rid of the sales guy I'm talking to and go to meet Maury. Now I don't want to bore the nice man with some of those same old cliches, but I want to ask some solid questions and get his inside info on the game.Maury is very friendly and shows interest right away. He says "I can talk baseball all night". Well guess what OBCers...I can listen all night!!...This is gonna be good I think to myself! First off, after the introductions are over...I make my move. I ask Maury how the artificial turf changed the game of baseball, running, fielding and hitting. Not just a lob over the net, but I asked him to describe the differences. Maury was a long time veteran and former MVP in the all-grass fieldera, but in 1965 the fake greenery entered the game. Maury's eyes lit up as he told me about how fast that ball got to the shortstop...and it forced the players to really know their opposing batters, to know what the pitching strategy for each hitter was and to concentrate on your positioning. Even the best athletes couldn't get to the ball as fast asit was, and your range really only depended on where you lined up and yourquick reactions. He went on to remark ....As the early 70's began, (and Maury was towards the end of his career) the artificial turf had taken over more than half of the league. Great question he said! Great answer too...I said. Next question, I backed up a few years to his MVP 104 steals season. I asked how he was able to successfully steal that many bases when everyone in the whole ball park knew he was running...and he was likely to steal both 2ndand 3rd base. He explained how he judged his lead, and how he timed the pitcher's move (today they use a stopwatch, back then, Maury just counted to himself). Maury would say, after the 1st throw over from the mound ( and hefaced a LOT of throws over!!) he saw how much farther he could go, claiming he wanted to be so far off the base that every throw would be just a whisker too late. I fired query after query, each time the answer was a great anecdote or baseball strategy tip. Then another comment I'll share...I asked him who was the best catcher throwing out runners...he went into a long story about the NL catchers in the early 60's. (Guys... get out your baseball cards and follow along!). Randy Hundley was one of the best he said...but his pitchers were easy to steal off anyway. Jerry Grote was a young player when Maury was near the tail end of his career. Good arm. He also told a long story of Johnny Bench, who lived up to every word of the hype about him! The worst thrower? Well most of them were bad, he claimed ,and his brand of baseball actually drove many of them out of the game.Del Rice, Del Crandall, Tom Haller, slowfooted Edgar Bailey, short & round Smoky Burgess were in the game mostly for their hitting...and none of that ilk were likely to slow down Maury. Look at the changes behind the plate for most NL teams in 1963-1965...Maury changed that position! Better athletes behind the plate, with a focus on defense, just like the earlier eras. I actually asked him several other questions that night, of which I will spare you all of the details...but I wanted to keep going on the story. After Maury signed a bunch of baseball cards for me, and a small stash of 8x10's it was soon time to end the evening...until the next day. As mentioned, Maury was the keynote speaker for the next day. I was given the pleasure/honor of introducing him to the sold out dining hall. Over the PA system, I mentioned a few of Maury's great baseball acheivements, coaxing the crowd tocheer after each one...then introduced Maury as a fine baseball player, but an even finer man! Maury spoke about an hour, answering questions from the crowd, making us all laugh with stories of his career, his humble beginings and the baseball guys who influenced and inspired him the most (Jerry Priddy and Bobby Braganespecially). He somehow worked my name into his stories two or three times, each one with a good natured kidding, for which I was happy to be part ofthe punch line...what an amazing thrill. So in summary (and thanks for reading if you have gotten this far!), I spent about 4 hours along side Maury, shared two meals with him, and asked enough questions that he must have felt interviewed/grilled. It was one of the greatest times in recent memory for me! On the 2nd of October, I emailed Maury to wish him Happy Birthday...not really expecting a reply. But only about 15 minutes later a nice email came back from my new bud... It was him thanking me for making him feel so special! Clearly it was the other way around! Great story, eh? It got better about 10 days ago, when my friend Paul (arranger of this whole event) asks me to walk to his truck with him. He quietly hands me a signed baseball inscribed : To Brian, who knows the game! Gosh, that about knocked me over! I attached a couple pictures of the ball. I apologize once again for the length of this email and for the long delay in time it took me to finish it. I thought my OBC friends would like to hear the story!! The ROC has guidlines for members and the AC could approach those who need assistance. Send us a list of names as you come across them John - Thanks for the "heads-up" - BE WELL!!!! Made my first trip to South Rim, and also went to Montezuma's Castle. Amazing, fantastic places. Anyway, I noticed packs of NATIONAL PARK COLLECTION cards for sale at some places. Of course, I couldn't resist and bought several packs. Neat cards, 100 cards in series 1, and 100 cards in series 2. I couldn't find any ofthese cards for sale on E-bay which struck me as odd when everything else on earth is listed there. So I'll test the OBC waters. Anyone collect these? If you do, let me know(I have a few dupes). And just in case, here's my new wantlist for your perusal: NATIONAL PARK COLLECTION CARDS first series (black borders): 6 7 10 14 16 17 19 20 21 22 23 25 27 28 31 32 33 34 35 36 38 39 40 42 48 49 51 53 55 57 59 63 64 66 70 72 73 77 81 83 85 88 91 92 94 99 NATIONAL PARK COLLECTION CARDS second series (white borders): need all 1 to Marshall West
