Happily for me, some of my favorite musicians are involved in this. This isn't meant to be a commerical, but I figure at least one person here would be interested in knowing about this. Maybe Mark Atnip will add this to his collection even though it isn't a 78 RPM record. Anyway, here is the description of the album from the record company: "Rock n' roll vets Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Gutterball, Danny & Dusty, Miracle 3) have an unhealthy love for music undermined only by an even more unhealthy love of baseball. The compatriots blend their two passions with The Baseball Project -- Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails, an album of buzzing guitars and baseball back stories. The heroes and villains of America's (in)famous pastime are explored with cutting wit and fanboy detail in songs that satisfy both the summer's need for rock anthems and sweltering afternoon double-headers. Drummer Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3, Golden Smog) and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck round out the squad, as they spin tales of ill-fated drinking binges ('The Yankee Flipper', 'The Death of Big Ed Delahanty'), near mythical icons ('Ted F#$%ing Williams'), folk heroes ('Fernando', 'Satchel Paige Said') and, on 'Gratitude (For Curt Flood)', the overlooked man who changed the game. A passionately funny and sarcastically reverent commentary on the state of the sport, The Baseball Project provides a hip soundtrack to the backstage party at America's game." They performed on the David Lettrman show a few weeks ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vA2RNfhhlY-Y There is also some performance clips and a three part interview with members of the band at the Major League Baseball site. There is also a cool video feature from This Week in Baseball. If you go to the MLB Video area and search for "Baseball Project" you should find them easily. Members I saw were: Sal, Spike, Goto, JSG the Youger, Leroux, Mandell, Mroz, Newcomb, Perry, Rich, Stamper, Talbot, TJ, Vrechek, West, Mac & Wierzbicki. New faces for me were Leroux, Mroz, Stamper, TJ & West. I chose to go to the show Friday instead of the Cubs game. Kurt 2Doe nearly broke my weekend budget in the first couple of hours. Many hits to my 1948 thru 1952 want list. Walked around the convention center the rest of the day picking up bargains & hits at another dozens booths along the way. Stayed until closing & helped Mike Rich haul his haul out to the parking lot a few blocks away. Hooked up with Spike & drove over to Texas Long Horns for dinner where most of the baseball game crowd joined up with us. Enjoyed the OBC company & regaled each other with BS stories about everything & nothing. Left many hours later & crashed on my daughter's couch for the nite aound My God, it gets light at 5:30 AM in Chicago this time of year. Groggy & in need of coffee I stumbled around the kitchen looking for caffeine. Infant grandson awoke, can't be from the racket I made can it? Granpa now on duty getting him back to sleep. Oh Boy! Show opened at 9 AM for those with dealer badges. How does OBC always manage to get our hands on these? It's another great day at the show. Getting to tag along with OBCer's & haggling with dealers over the pricing of their wares. Makes you feel like you're in a third world city's Bazaar. Why do dealers mark their prices so high when most of them will accept a fraction of that price & then give a special OBC discount on top of that. It is very gratifying to have so many dealers recognize our hats & acknowledge what OBC stands for. I happened to be standing with Sal when St Al made his call. He was in Iowa, apparently lost on his way to Chicago. Maybe if he keeps on driving he can make Cleveland by this time next year. Truly the Big Guy along with Rittenberg & Morganti were missed this year. I'd never been to a National show without all three in attendance. But all this was but a prelude for the evening's festivities. The OBC swap nite is the best part of any get together. (An aside: Any OBCer not having attended one of these, has not really enjoyed the full flavor of belonging to OBC.) Kent Goto & his trusted sidekick Sal made all the arrangements. Though somehow this was not communicated to the nite manager at Kent's hotel. The nite Mgr attempted to throw us all out on the street when he stormed into the Swap room declaring "You guys can't meet here" & "I can't be responsible for you guys trashing this place". Sal "The Enforcer" Domino kindly informed him that Kent "Mr Big" Goto had surely obtained permission (Bribed?)from the day Mgr Miss So & So. Well apparently Miss So & SO is a pretty big muckety-muck in the organization because Mr nite Mgr quickly tucked tail & ran. Sal's name sake Pizza Parlor then delivered the goods but left without providing plates, cups, napkins & other such necessities. A few of the guys ransacked the Hotel's cupboards & came up with everything we required. The rest of the evening ran smoothly, many cards changing hands & a good time had by all. Looking forward to next year in Cleveland. I met Gary Mandell at the National on Thursday. The first OBC member I met. A real pleasure it was. Thanks for breaking the ice. After the Friday Cubs game Gary invited us to his office which is only a mile or so away from Wrigley. What a view from the 31st floor, overlooking the field. Thursday night Mike Rich called and left a message stating that him and Mark were just leaving Detroit and should arrive sometime around 11-11:30. They were going to stay with me Thursday night. I called Mike back at the dinner table after I ordered my Pizza. I figured since it takes 15 minutes to cook the pizza, I could fit a few minute conversation in. Well, since Mike was driving, Mark answered the phone. It was 45 minutes later and we were still talking and my pizza was getting really cold. Later that night I got another call from Mark saying they were stuck in Chicago traffic and they would be in around Midnight. I called the front desk and left a key for them. Mark comes in first, while Mike was parking the car, and hands me a stack of cards. We talked a little about what I picked up from the National and I mentioned my 69 Mantle find. He prods me a little about the set and what another key cards I am missing. Well it turns that under his own 65 card was a stack of 7 star 69's. As I went through them one by one more excited as each card was seen. I got choked up when I say the Bench All-Star, then the Seaver, Wow, What a treat! By now I'm all choked up by this generous offering. The next card in the stack was NOLAN RYAN, when I saw this cards, my eyes welled up. The final card was a Ted Williams "Ted Shows How"...I was so excited and so touched by this act of kindness. Right than Mike comes in the room, freshens up, comes out and we shake hands. In Mikes hand is a nice stack of 72's covered up by a Mike Rich 55 Bowman. The three of us carry on a conversation until 4 in the morning. We wake up around 7:30 go out to breakfast, Mike Treats! What a nice way to start the day. We head back to the parking lot for the train. I call Mac Wubben and set a meeting place so I can get his third ticket and we can go to the game together. Mike is not going to the game and Mark is going with Sal. We meet Gersh in the parking lot and he hands me a nice stack of cards. I call Mac, and Mac calls me a few times and finally hook up on the train and we head off to Wrigley Field. We get off the train and go across the street to the Bus stop. We finally have a chance to talk to each other and Mac introduces me to Alisha, his girlfriend who is brave enough to venture out with all of us. At the game Mark calls me and comes and sits with us for a while. We than go over and see Mike W, Gary, Sal and Spike. Mike W hands me an envelope of cardboard. We talk for a few moments and than the usher came over and asked us to leave. We were sitting in the aisle. Gary's seats are right behind home plate. He points out his office building, which you can see from his seats at Wrigley. Mark and I go off to explore Wrigley and see the game from different vantage points...Not a bad view in the house! We saw Waverly Ave. with a small Fire Station across the street and a Fire Truck pulling out wit sirens on. Rob G must have been there in spirit. After the game we all meet up at Harry's Statue. Mac heads out for a nice evening with Alisha. The remaining five of us head over to Gary's office. Spike has to pick up his stuff. It was a great walk through Chicago. A nice looking city and really a pure Baseball city. We get to Gary's building and pass through a mini snack shop. I got some water and Mark asked me to get hm one. Next thing I know is he has paid for both of them. We head up to the 31st floor and enter Gary's office. What a view! over looking Wrigley Field with views of the Chicago sky line. Gary stays behind and Sal, Spike, Mark and myself head back to catch the bus. We have wonderful conversation on our 1 1/2 hour bus ride back to the Train A nice Lady was making sure we did not miss our stop, very nice people in Chicago. We board the train and in no time are back at the parking lot. Next we are off to dinner. I catch a ride with Mike and Mark back to the Hotel to freshen up and off we went. We ate at a nice Steak House and met up with Gersh and Spike. We sat at the bar with them and Gersh bought the drinks. These guys won't let me pay for anything. Shortly after, Sal shows up, and than Kent with his cousin Dustin and than JSG and his wife Jo come in. We have great conversation in the bar area while we wait for our table. We pass around some card board. I had to hand mine out their, since I was going home in the morning. I got packages from JSG and Sal. Very sweet. We are starving and still no table, so someone mentions the two empty tables in the bar area. Which worked out best, since we were quite loud and clearly enjoying ourselves. After a wonderful meal and even more wonderful conversation, four of us headed to Spike's Hotel. Mark and Mike were spending the night there. Mark had a few suggestions for me as to the rest of the evening. He knew I had to wake up at 4 in the morning and catch a flight back home. I opted to stay with them and see what Mike scored at the show. Some pretty impressive cards for sure. Spike gave me some really nice cards and told me a little story about a variation on one of the cards he gave me. Spike mentioned his missing last 52 low number and it just happened that I was able to trade Mark for it and than hand it off to Spike to complete than run. As we were getting ready to go back to my hotel and drop me off and they could get their stuff, Mike hands me two boxes of cards, mostly 64 68 69 71 and 72, to look though and take what I wanted. I took out a hundred or so, not to be greedy, and both Mark and Mike told me to take more so I loaded up on some 71's and found a few more 69's. Mark also handed me a care package for the swap that I would be missing. We got back to my Hotel after Midnight. They packed up their gear and we said our good-byes. It was a wonderful 24 hours hanging out with Mike and especially Mark, since we hardly left each others side for the 24 hours. Okay, well he slept on the floor. I place a wake-up call at the front desk for 4 AM. After I packed and washed up it was 1:00. Another night of three hours of sleep. I could sleep on the plain, so no worries. I got my wake up call, jumped in the shower and headed off to the Airport. As I'm boarding the Shuttle my phone rings. I can't answer it. I listen to the voice-mail. It's Mike Rich wishing me a safe flight home...He's calling me at 4:30 in the morning. Later while I'm sitting at my terminal, 2 hours early for my flight (better to be early than late) my phone rings again and it's Mike. We talk for a while, he wanted to make sure I made it to the airport on time. What a great guy. I boarded my 7:30 Jet Blue Flight and headed home. Landed 4 hours later, 9:30 Los Angeles time. Got my Suit case and headed off to see my Daughters Final performance at 11:00. I made with 30 minutes to spare. I was able to see opening night of her show and also the Final show. I was very proud of her as she, and the cast put on a wonderful show. What a joy seeing your child do something that they have a passion for. Thank you all who made it to the National and made my experience that much better by being a part of it. As for the guys who were there and I did not get a chance to see, sorry I missed you. Perhaps next time, or sooner. Thank you for a wonderful National...and a wonderful few days John Stamper A little note about Earthquakes. Here is my contribution to that blog-fest: On Thursday evening about 7pm Detroit time I met up with Mike Rich, we loaded up his parent’s car of embarked on another great adventure. A few construction related problems and one accident that apparently we just missed slowed us a little but we arrived in Chi-town slightly before midnight. After a quick bite to eat we invaded John Stampers hotel room; John was kind enough to allow us to share his room for the evening. After waking John we spent the next few hours carrying on like long lost cousins who haven’t seen each other in quite some time. An experience shared by many OBC’ers through the years, as meeting any OBC’er is like meeting family. We finally got to sleep and in the morning prepared for our days, Mike was heading to the show and John and I the Cubs game. We made our way to the Convention center where I met up with Sal Domino and after greeting Larry Gersbach we departed for the “L” for the public transportation ride to Wrigley Field, which included a sardine like packed bus ride. Took about an hour and a half but the time passed quickly as Sal and I passed the time getting caught up with each other. I don’t recall having spent as much time with Sal before and can say this – he’s one cool guy. We arrived at Wrigley with about 15 minutes to game time and I quickly found a scalper to get a ticket to the game, over paid a little but it was well worth the price. I made my way to the 400 section and met up with Gary Mandell, Spike Glidden, Sal and Mike Wierzbicki who had found their seats and were ready for the game. I was able to spend about an inning with the guys seated right behind home plate until the folks holding the tickets for the seat I had planted myself in arrived. At this point I moved just a few sections over and met up with Mac Wubben, his friend Alicia and John Stamper and spent the rest of the game with them. John and I spent a few innings walking around the park enjoying the game from direct viewpoints. It was my first trip to Wrigley and it was a blast. The return trip from the ballpark included a stop at Gary Mandell’s office which faces Wrigley and has a great view of the Chicago skyline. After which Spike, Sal and I began a long-ass bus ride to the “L” which seemed like hours but once again it was an opportunity to share in conversation. Once back to the Convention center we made plans for dinner. At dinner a gathering of Kent Goto, his nephew Dustin, John Scott & Jo Gray, Larry Gershbach, Mike Rich, Sal, Spike, John and myself invaded the Longhorn Steakhouse for a few hours of fun, food and conversation. It was a great evening. Saturday would be my first “official” day at the show and I garnered deals from Roger Neufeldt, Randy Kniffin, Dick Zimmerman, Wayne Johnson, Kurt Torudot & Jerry Martin, Mike Sandles, J.D. Heckathorn and a few other dealers who I forgot to get names from. During the show I ran into Ron Perry, George Vrechek and heard word that Tim Newcomb was in the house but never got a chance to see him. I ran into Marshall West and we had a very pleasant conversation, we handed over cardboard to each other, it was great to meet Marshall for the first time. I also spent some quality time with VCT members Mike Mackie and Steve Etzel; it was great to meet these guys. A long day at the show was followed by the traditional swap in the lobby of Kent Goto’s hotel – Kevin Savage, Kurt Tourdot and J.D. Heckathorn (I think) sponsored this year’s event which was attended my a number of newcomers. Sal Domino, Larry Gersbach, Spike Glidden, Kent Goto, JS & Jo Gray, John Leroux, Mike Mackie (gues t from VCT), Gary Mandell, Mike Mroz, Mike Rich, TJ Valacak, Mike Wierzbicki, Mac Wubben and myself were all in attendance for pizza, chicken and cardboard, we were later joined by dealer Randy Kniffen. Mike and I tried to carry on the tradition established by Steve Rittenberg of bringing tons of stuff to give away at the swap but managed to get all the stuff we brought on a single hotel luggage cart, impressive but not like the 2 or 3 carts that would be needed to cart in the warehouse usually provided by Steve. Sal and Kent did a great job ”filling in” as host for Ken Morganti but both Steve and Ken were missed at the event. We heard that Big Al was on his way and might just make it to Cleveland this time next year if he stays on his current route (Al was missed as well). The swap ended close to 10 pm (earliest I can ever remember) and we had (3) pizzas left over(unheard of), still it was a great time and a real pleasure to spend some more time with all these OBC’ers. Back at the hotel after a very lond day we were just thrilled to find that there were no parking spaces due to a wedding and then we were “entertained” all night long by the live band playing directly beneath our room, they didn’t stop until 2 am. Just a great environment for sleeping (not), so I ended up sleeping in and Mike and I arrived at the show around 11 am. I ran around and picked up more stuff starting with Ty’s cards where I picked up some football and Gary Mandell’s want list folder, I touched base with Kevin Savage and delivered a stack of Indians cards to his son Keegan. I hit Roger, Randy, Mike, Kurt and Dick’s tables again as well as B&B cards (who wants to be an OBC certified dealer), Ron Easties (?), Chandy Greenholt and a few others again who were not OBC certified. I did not see another OBC or VCT member (except Mike Rich) on Sunday. During the show I picked up a ton of stuff and finished (3) sets: `59 Topps, `68 Topps FB Stand-ups and `80-83 Kramer Base ball. Other cardboard highlights included picking up (60) `52 Topps cards, (15) `33 Goudey’s, a `64 Topps Clemente (only Tops in the NL left), a `54 Bowman Snider, a `61 Golden Book DiMaggio (only Gehrig left), a `50 Bowman Reese and a bunch of various Post Cereal cards. This is just to name a few, and you all should have seen Mike Rich’s face when rolled up this big old rolling case filled with card binders with unusual sized card pages that I got for $5 at the end of the show. We managed to get it into Mike’s car on the back seat completely filling that puppy for the ride home. Mike and I closed down the show by helping Chandy Greenholt clear up his table and we hit the road around 7 pm Chicago time. A 6 hour uneventful drive got us back to Detroit safe and sound. I had a great time and enjoyed meeting (5) new faces for the first time; T.J. Valacek, John Stamper, Marshall West, Mike Mackie and Steve Etzel. Spending time with Sal, Larry, Spike, Kent & Dustin, JS & Jo, John, Gary, Mike M, Ron, Mike R, George, Mike W. and Mac was “priceless”. Guys (and Gal) – thanks for providing your companionship on this excellent adventure. See you all in Cleveland next year and Baltimore the following year. BE WELL!!! To clarify a couple of items, Kurt Tourdot and JD Heckathorn (sp?) were the dealers contributing towards the pizza. Kurt and Mike Sandles donated cards for us to pass around at the swap. A contact of John Stamper involved in putting on the show, provided a pair of Press badges. Greg Fisher of Cameo Cards donated dealer badges. Larry Kerrigan sold us a pair of badges at cost ($45 ea.). A few guys (Sal & Kent, if not others, I think) bought VIP badges. You're complaining about T206's ??? I can't even win stuff from the seventies or even the EIGHTIES any more. Especially those early 1970's high numbers. Er, ah, well, all right, yes, of course I could win them, IF I were willingto snipe a bid at fifty bucks per, just to make sure my bid will top the other rich guy's, twenty two or twenty eight dollar bid. However, I don't have that kind of money. I know of one, last, hold out card shop here in the whole Colorado region where I can walk in and find a box of miscellaneousvintage cards with wrinkles, holes, and paper loss. While the store ownercalls that box his, $1 "Finger Food," box, there isn't much left in there for under even $5 dollars, let alone, one dollar. I think I grabbed just about all the last one dollar stuff he had left, years ago. My wife and daughter accompanied me to Chi-town since they missed out on a planned visit to join me at the end of a business trip in March, due to a severe blizzard. We made it downtown about 9:45, where I dropped them off for a day of shopping and sightseeing, so I then headed to Rosemont to do some "shopping" of my own. Once arriving at the show, I contacted Sal, who came to my rescue along with Kent, to get me access into the show. I also met up briefly with Mark and Mike Rich before the group headed to Wrigley. Once inside, I felt a bit overwhelmed, but had a blast hitting as many OBC-friendly dealers that I could. I spent most of the afternoon with TJ Valacak, who helped to steer me towards a few other great deals. I need to thank TJ, Mike Rich, Gersh, Mark Talbot, Sal Domino and Kent for handing me some great packages. Gersh totally surprised me by sliding in a super-sharp 71 Garvey. Also at the swap, I obtained a couple of dealer scum T206's from Mike Rich, which I quickly learned changed my status from "owning a type card" to "collecting the set". Wednesday went perfect. Left Salt Lake City early, checked into the Sofitel Hotel, and walked to the Convention Center for all the VIP guest trick stuff. I never needed a rental car. Thursday and Friday was my Disneyland (on steroids). I was vibrating like the Flash, and could not see enough of all the amazing memorabilia. I'm sure I didn't see everything. And the autographs were a zoo, but fun. I only pay for autographs if they are in my 1964 set. This year: WHITEY FORD, BOB GIBSON, MILT PAPPAS, and GARY PETERS. I now have 44 autographs in my '64 set! Ended up buying all my '66 high numbers (except for 547 Clarke), a ton of '63 Post Cereal Canadian football, a lot of '52 Bowman baseball and Look N' See's (including the tough Rembrant card), and a back-pack full of numerous other new treasures. Saturday- I had cardboard thrown at me by LARRY GERSBACH ('63 W.S card), SAL (3-68's), MARK TALBOT (skeds, 3-68's, 3-68 game cards, '73 football, and '72 football high number), MIKE RICH (2-68's, and 1 '73 football Butkus), and JOHN STAMPER left me a '52 Bowman Look 'n See. Thanks to all for the great Prior to this National, I had met 9 OBC'ers in 12 years. Thanks to the following SUPER guys I met, I'm now up to 19: MAC WUBBEN, GARY MANDELL, MIKE RICH, MARK TALBOT, LARRY GERSBACH, SPIKE GLIDDEN, JOHN GRAY, GEORGE VRECHEK, JOHN LEROUX, AND RON PERRY! I just barely missed JOHN STAMPER, and totally missed MROZ, VALACAK, AND WIERZBICKI. Once again, because of personal reasons, I had to leave the National early. My son came home for a visit to our Utah home on Saturday with my new baby grand-daughter (Meadow Sinawava West....yes, I too wondered where they came up with the middle name), so I flew home Saturday night to be with the family. Next time, I promise to hang in there for the Saturday swap. Every OBC'er I have met is an amazing person and friend, and I'm honored tobe a part of all this fun. It has been a great baseball weekend so far. Last night, I saw CC Sabathia pitch his 7th game since joining the Brewers. He was completely dominating. He now has a 6-0 record with the Brewers and is leading the National League in complete games. This morning, I spent a couple of hours at my suburb's Village Days, which includes a rummage sale with from 75-100 tables, including many antique dealers. Most of the sports cards are UV and not worth looking at. However, a few years ago, I found a sheet of 1930s cards for $10. soit is worthlooking This morning, I picked up a 1953 Milwaukee Braves team autographed baseballfor $35. The autographs are fairly worn, but I could make out many of the team--Mathews, Surkont, Pafko, Dittmer, Buhl, Antonelli, and others. I think a lot of people would not be able to read the names if they didn't know who was on that team. Since that is the first year that the Braves were in Milwaukee, the names are etched in my memory. As soon as I boughtit, the next man at the table couldn't believe how good a deal it was. Plans and preparations for the National always start in advance, but rarely go as planned. Month end is my busiest time at work is month end, so I could not go for the first 2 days of the show. Ron Perry was going to join Mark Talbot and I on Friday morning for the drive in and the show. We had arranged to stay in Spike's room Friday and Saturday nite. A few days before the show, Ron e-mailed and said that he had to drive separately and stay at a hotel far from the show as he was seeing someone while there. Since I got off work on the 31st at a decent hour, mark and I decided to drive in late Thursday nite, early Friday morning. Not having a hotel room arranged for, we called John Stamper on our way there and INFORMED him that we were staying in his room that nite/morning. Of course, neither of us had ever met John before, but Mark talked to him for a good 45 minutes on our drive, so John was only mildly afraid when we showed up after 1:00 Chicago time. We stayed up chatting until after 4:00 Chicago time. We got up, went to IHOP and then we split up at the L parking lot. Mark and John joined others at the Cubs game and I went to the show. First stop was Larry Kerrigan's table to get the 1952 Topps low number deal that we put together. While there I picked up 28 1933 & 1934 WWG Canadian Goudey BB, a few Red Hearts, including Musial, a stack of 1955 Topps Doubleheaders (anyone have any to swap, I have some dupes) and a stack of 20 1951 Topps Red backs to upgrade my set immensely, accompanied by some wrappers. Anyone have this set, that needs a wrapper? Another person that helps Larry out had a stack of Red Man, with tabs. I ended up getting that also, including Mays, Spahn, Ford, Ashburn, etc. First table and much of my National budget was spent. I did not see much of the show on Friday, as I spent large chunks of time at a few tables. This included Kurt Tourdot's table with an asosrtment of hits. The day ended with hits to 33 sets, including 3 type cards, 2 2nd cards and 2 other sets started. Friday nite, 10 of us went out to dinner. In a theme that was to be repeated on Saturday, the hostess was worried we would do something causing her to lose her job. Excellent time was had. John Stamper, Mark and I headed back to Spike's for more chatting and to look at my haul from the show on Friday and for John to get a chance at grabbing stuff since he would not be at the swap. Mark claims that he snores when he drinks beer. He LOUDLY proved his point. Around 4:00 AM there was a loud noise. My first thoughts were; fire alarm, I am in a hotel, get the cards, oh yea, tell Mark and Spike so they can get out also, wait that is not a fire alarm. Damn, a hotel with the name O'Hare in it should have better sound proofing, not an airplane it is only Mark! Spike meanwhile, who was wearing earplugs. thought the air conditioning fan broke. Since I was up, I called John Stamper to make sure he got up for his flight. Saturday, Spike beat us out the door to the shuttle and got to the show first. Mark and I followed about 1/2 hour later. Since I had been reimbursed for some of the 1952s by now, I had some money to spend and I went after it hard. I made a large purchase including a complete set of 1938 Our National Game Pins in a display case, and 85 T-205s and T-206s. Of course the swap was Saturday nite after the show and Sal was good enough to get some chicken wings to go with the pizza, mainly due to my not being a pizza eater. As has been reported, the nite clerk was quite concerned we should not be there and that he would get in trouble. Dupe boxes came out and cards were grabbed. I did my swap with Gersh, got the T-205 from Mac, and grabbed the Atlantic Oil cards from JSG. As guys went through dupe boxes, they pulled a bunch of misuts for me. Dealer Randy Kniffen showed up and I was told about his table, which I hit on Sunday morning for a stack of even low grade T-206s and a nice stack of 1951 Berk Ross. The swap broke up rather early, and I was not able to get rid of hardly any of the Beckett mags I brought. I figured guys might want them for the covers if nothing else. I stayed up marking down what I got, plus it was due to the music from the wedding band that played until 2:00 AM. Spike had to head out for his flight on Sunday morning, and the shuttle got screwed up. I got into the face of the shuttle drivers telling them they had about 30 seconds to decide if they or I was going to drive Spike to the airport. They ended up taking him and he made his flight. Although we heard Sal was at the show Sunday morning, Mark and I did not see any other OBCers on Sunday. Rather surprising and disappointing. Although some dealers left early, we closed the show down. We were at Chandy's table and as we helped him throw stuff into his buckets, I thought I located the last card I needed to complete my 1974 Fleer Hot Shots BSKB set. That would have been the only set I finished all weekend, although it ends up I am still mssing 1 card. The last couple of years, I had a fun little contest with JSG to see how many vintage sets we can get hits to. I think I ended up with hits to close to 100 sets, totalling about 300 hits. After 3 days at the show, I would say I only saw about 1/3 to 1/2 of it, as I spent so much time at mainly OBC dealers. Best buy of the show was probably a tie between a 1941 Goudey and a 1947 Tip Top Berra each for $10. The dupe boxes have been reinforced with some great oddball stuff. I had gone to the show needing only 1 card to finish about 15 different sets. I did not get a single one. The 1950 Bowman BB set was reduced to just Williams to finish that one also, as was the 1968 American Oil FB set (Sayers). Also made a dent in my 1949 Bowman high numbers. The 1933-34 Ice Kings Hockey and 1969 MLBPA Pins went from have lists to need lists. The 1951 Berk Ross is closing in on 1/2 way, the T-206s went over the 200 have mark and I now have 70 T-205s. We talked on the phone Tursday morning and made arrangements to meet up Friday, as I was at home with my son and couldn't attend the show. At least, that's what I thought. My wife called at noon to say that she could come home early if I wanted to go to the show. Of course, I agreed. I made it to the show around 5:15, and Sal met me outside shortly after that. He gave me a dealer badge and some directions to Kurt Tourdot's table, and I was on my way as the show closed at 6. After passing Kurt's table once, I was able to meet up with him and pick a box of cards for Glenn (it will be in the mail tomorrow Glenn). I also manage to rummage through one of Kurt's bargain bins and knock a few cards off of my wantlist. Gary Mandell bumped into me and we were able to chat for a while as he waited for wantlist to be delivered. On Friday, I was able to get to the show around 2 in the afternoon. I stopped by Uncle Dicks's table and snagged a few bargains from the early 50's. As I was leaving his table, I met up with Mike Mroz. Mike and I walked the floor for the next few hours, visiting many OBC friendly dealers. Thanks to Spike and anyone else who compiled the list of OBC friendly dealers. It was very helpful, and everyone I dealt with was more than happy to offer up a little discount. Saturday was another good day at the show, browsing tables, looking for bargains, and meeting many OBCers around the show. Some of my highlight purchases included a handful of 53 topps high numbers for a buck a piece, a real nice looking 63 fleer Yaz for 4 bucks, a few hits to my 59 fleer ted Williams set, and numerous hits to my early 50's sets at 1-2 bucks a piece. As the show ended, I helped Greg from Cameo cards cleanup, and then headed over to the swap meet. Here we go with the thanks: Thanks to MARK TALBOT for riding shotgun on the drive to the swap meet. Thanks also for the 50 hits to my 74/75 topps hockey set. GERSH for a 57 Pee Wee Reese JOHN SCOTT GRAY for a hit to my 71 supers set, and at least 25 hits to my 75 mini set. JOHN STAMPER who was not at the meet, but had passed along an envelope for me. John thanks for the 66 high number Astros rookies KENT GOTO for helping to set up the pizza and the room, and also for allowing me to rummage through his dupes box for a few 53 Bowmans. MIKE MROZ for a hit to the 68 football set and for putting up for me for three + hours on Friday as we wandered the show floor. MIKE WIERZBICKI for three 62 high numbers MAC WUBBEN for a 65 topps Tony Perez rookie. This is the updated version with his Reds stats on the back. SPIKE GLIDDEN- it was finally great to meet Spike after two failed attempts on my part in Boston. I know I am leaving some people out and some cardboard thanks as well. I apologize for the tardiness of the report, as my family and I went out to Delaware on Sunday the 3rd and I did not have internet As my wife can attest, I had been looking forward to the National, and more importantly the swap meet, for a long time. It contained no less than 30 "cards" that were player heads and bodies clipped from 1954 / 1955 Bowman and 1955 Topps cards. Attached to sticks, they'd make great baseball puppets. Kevin threw a handful of scrapbook-glued cards into the mix, so I did some card-soaking to free up the backs. (Mike Rich even suggested we create video tutorials for soaking--we'll see about that.) The former owner of these cards used simple white glue to mount them, which a night in a bowl of tap water easily loosens. Once you free the card from the backing, it's usually best to press the damp card between paper towels under a heavy book for several hours. Drying them in the open air can significantly warp the card. So far, all of the cards came clean from the soaking! The trimmed and glued box included several great players, but the OBC highlight is a youthful 54B Frank "The Original" Thomas. ================= Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 22:17:29 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "rlabs1" Subject: question I was wondering if we had any pilots or frequent flyers in the group. In the old days, the error was much larger, so it wasn't as common. The wake vortices are produced off the wingtips of the preceding aircraft and tend to sink and dissipate, but how fast depends on atmospheric conditions. Airplanes fly because thewing shape makes a low pressure area on the top and a high pressure area on the bottom of the wing. At the wingtip, the differential pressures cause a vortex effect that resembles a spiral. We actually had a PC-12 flipped over the other day because he tried to land too soon behind a C-130 andgot into the vortex. Hey, I used to LIVE at the end of a runway - the North end of Boeing Field in
Seattle. Of course, that was the late 40's and early 50's so no jets. I
was 4-7 years old at the time but I can remember being fascinated by watching
the planes come in to land. Some of those old prop jobs would come inso
slow you would swear they were just hanging in the air.

There is some truth to Walker's speculation, however. One airplane did crash
about a block up the street from our house (fortunately we were not homeat
the time). The landing gear caught the telephone wires and crashed into
a house. Those folks were also not home at the time, but they had their life
savings literally stuffed into their mattress and lost everything in the
ensuing fire.

David Skoglund sent me a T206 of Quillen, Minneapolis with a Polar

What is the player's first name? Anyone know anything about him? He
is apparently a minor league player because the only Quillen I could
find in my 9th edition of the Baseball Encyclopedia was a player
named Lee Quillen who played 2 seasons for Chicago American League in
1906, 1907. But I read this Lee Quillen was from Minneapolis so is he
the same player pictured on the T206 card?

Here's more... Quillen is an unusual name but I recognize the name
from an actor with a very similiar last name only spelled with an "a"
instead of an "e", Eddie Quillan, I like who appeared in RKO films
from the 1930's. Naturally I have a tobacco card of him made in
Germany in the early 1930's. Yes, an American actor I like who is on
a German tobacco card. Here it is:

Richard: Every once in a great while, I'll get a request from an
aircraft to slightly offset course to avoid flying in a preceding
aircrafts wake.
How close can aircraft get to each other? I work in an enroute
facility, and the closest we are allowed to get aircraft is 5 miles if
at the same altitude, or aircraft can pass right over each other if
1,000 feet vertical separation. Aircraft nearer to an airport are
allowed to fly closer to each other.
The skies are crowded, so there are probably alot of these kinds of
turbulence incidences like happened to you. But only the most severe
kinds require any kind of reporting.
Rent "Pushing Tin", most of the air traffic control scenes are very
realistic in the type of control center where I work at.

Yes I am about to add the piece of memorabilia that will define my collection. No, we aren't talking a Mantle rook or that tiny Wagner card. This is MUCH bigger for me. Around 10 years ago when they talked of tearing down Shea Stadium, I swore I would find a way to buy some seats from the stadium. Well we know things didn't work out after 9/11 but they sure the heck did today. Season ticket holders were allowed an advance purchase of 2 seats when they tear down Shea. Of course I had to have either Blue or Orange seats (Not green or red-THOSE ain't Mets colors!). I told my best friend he had to make his purchase by today to get them. I told him I wanted seats in the worst way. Well he scoured his season ticket friends to find who wasn't going to buy the seats. Found one who had Green ones (DAMNNNNN!). Well working the phones, we come across another who had BLUE seats! Now this is the height of insanity. The Mets came up with the pricing of the seats by combining the 2 World Championship years. The combination is 6-8-9. Of course I didn't pay $689. The put they numbers in some kind of order...869 ('86 and '69). Well with tax I will be the proud owner of a set of Mets BLUE seats for the robust price of $950.00 bucks. I am SOOOO glad I'm not married, this would never have happened! Plus the fact that I think I am going to put the seats in the living room. So terms such as giddy, stupid, happy, insane, WOW, and freakin moron all apply. Thought I'd share this with you guys/gal, because you are the only ones who could possibly understand this. Of course the seats will be in the prenup if I ever do get married again lol.... Could they find NO cities?), we stopped at Devils Tower (no Close Encounters though), then on to Mount Rushmore for a very moving nighttime lighting ceremony. Also went 200 feet underground at Wind Cave National Park, also in South Dakota. All told we went through 10 states, which was interesting; kind of draining but I got to see a lot of the country I'd never seen before. At one point at TR Nat Park our car was even surrounded by a herd of bison. However, the main reason for the Ramble was the 2 days prior to the official trip. Wifey & I were in Cincy for the regional Emmy awards (and no, I didn't win, although I did get nominated). Actor Tim Ried, Venus Flytrap from "WKRP In Cincinnati" was the host. The Reds also let him throw out the first pitch on Friday night; we had free tickets & all walked to the park together. Well, we ALL got to go on the field when Tim went out to the mound. It was pretty cool to be on a MLB field prior to a game, even if we had to stay by the third-base dugout. I got some good pictures of the umpires coming out of the dugout, the Reds mascot, and the Reds Dance Crew (wifey gave me grief about taking those, but I had to. I was, uh, testing the camera. Yeah, that's it.) After the first pitch, we were all escorted to the luxury suites, where me, 2 others & Tim Ried took in the game. Reds lost (as usual), but it sure was fun. That's all. If you don't care to read anything that smells of UV, delete me now! One of the A&G one-per-box inserts is something that no doubt drives high-grade collectors to distraction. The idea, "Rip It" cards, are serial numbered cards that each contain another mini card. You're free to leave the outer card untouched and ignore what's inside. Or you can pull open the back and uncover the "treasure." Since it could have all sorts of rare goodies in it, I expect most cards will get ripped. Mine certainly did! These three photos show the "Rip It" card and the SP mini card it produced. http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/OBC-Ramblings/photos/browse/d9b4?c Being SPs, the "inside" cards are what collectors seem to crave at the moment. Even a "common" player can get half of the box's value back by reselling it. While I enjoyed digging into a card and getting a "bonus" for the experience, I wonder how far companies will take it. She had recently suffered a series of strokes, and had fought hard to cling on to life, but in the end it was too much for her. The doctors and nurses at the Stroke Unit at the hospital were absolutely brilliant. Kind, caring, compassionate and professional. She couldn't have been in better hands. Mom has had such a difficult time of things due to illness and stroke over the past 8 years, but before that she lived quite a life. I'm an only child, and after a acrimonious divorce when I was 4, she had to act as both Mom and Dad to me. She always made sure that I didn't go without, even (as I later discovered) if it meant making sacrifices herself. She made sure that I got the opportunity to play little league, and was there at every game. We moved to Scotland in 1973, not only to be near her parents, but also because Mom was struggling and knew that coming here offered us the best chance of a decent life. She was always there for me, in good times and bad. We didn't always agree, and had some arguments in our time, but we always found a way to make things work. I'm going to miss her so much. Thank you to all those who sent messages of support, thoughts, and although I'm not a religious man, prayers over the past few weeks. I'm very grateful for each and every one of them.
