It's time for the monthly update on the OBC Year Project server. This one's gonna be kinda brief though. I will explain that in my next post. It's running pretty smooth, with the guys in the group getting used to (and making the best of) the updated database format, which makes it pretty easy for us to team up and help each other out in a simple, effective, hassle free way. Here's the way it works: Members of the group can add their wantlists for ANY sets (including oddball) to a database from a specific year, and they can also edit others' lists when they pull cards for them, in order to minimize sending and receiving dupes. This month we are focusing on the years 1975 and 1986. The previous month's sets (1976 and 1985) will still have their own databases. 1977 through 1984 will be in the "Archive" database. So that means that the span is now a total of 12 years. There are also three databases for other sports: 1975, 1986, and archive for the years in between. It's all pretty simple once you check it out. So anyway, I don't want this to be me bugging you, but membership is still open for anyone else to join if they wish, especially as we ease into the earlier 70's sets that more of you may have some interest in. To join, send an email to: Thanks for reading. ================= Date: Fri, 02 May 2008 02:03:06 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "uthminsta1" Subject: I NEED A BREAK Okay, this is kind of a prayer request, for those of you who do that sort of thing, and also an explanation of some of the crud that's going on in my life right now. Most of you know that I work at a church. I'm a youth minister, in fact. Sunday, our senior minister resigned. It's a long story, but the long and the short of it is, I am going to be severely limiting my OBC time out of a desire to give my very best to serve my church as we grow through this rough time, as we pick up the slack of a great pastor and preacher, a brother and mentor. So... I don't exactly want to "go inactive," but I may be out of communication with the group for a while. And I wanted to make that known. This group has always been really cool to be a part of, and I don't want to sever that tie. Collecting is my escape, and you are my "accomplices" in that act. But just let me know when people are giving away all the 1952 Topps high numbers and I will be sure to read that availables post! :) Thanks a bunch guys, and I hope to talk to y'all soon. ================= To: , Date: Thu, 1 May 2008 19:53:47 -0700 From: "Erik & Leticia Greenwood" Subject: Type Card Source and Question I am closing in on completing the sets I want to complete and will be focusing on my non-sport sets, HOF, player and type collections. Anyway, he was set up at the local flea market, and this old guy shows up next to him with nothing but sports items. Turns out that he had been some sort of big wheel at the old Cleveland Coliseum, and was getting rid of the stuff he had in his basement. So, at the end of the day, he basically gave him everything he had left. Lots of neat stuff - boxes of coffee table books on sports (some autographed), a whole cardboard box of autographed baseballs (like this one, lots of them personalized, at least one Ted Williams), various this and that - including Steve Kerr's trophy from the All-Star 3-point shootout and one of thebasketballs he used (autographed), and a pair of boxing gloves reportedly used by Ali when he was training for the Chuck Wepner fight (that one can'tbe proven - but why would he lie?) A lot has happened in the last couple months since I decided not to serve on the AC for another term and announced that my girlfriend and I were expecting. One piece of good news I have to share is that I'm now a married man. Stacey and I were wed in a very small ceremony in the back yard on March 30th. I bought a gazebo with a matching dining table with chairs and a matching bar with stools for the event. Our parents, sisters and their kids were in attendence which was about 18 people in total. We spent our honeymoon in Atlantic City, only paying for a room one night out of five, but paying at the tables quite a bit to make up for that :-( As joyous an event as the wedding was supposed to be, there was a dark cloud hanging over us, as we recieved the worst news four days prior. After a couple doctor's appointments to see the baby's progress, listen for the heartbeat and such, we learned that the pregnancy failed. This basically means that it started and stopped for inexplicable reasons and Stacey was in surgery the following day to remove what little had actually developed. She got through the surgery OK and is just now back to normal physically. The emotional scars still have quite a ways to go before they heal though. I ask those of you who are so inclined to pray that she'll find peace of mind. We will just have to keep Now for some more bad news unfortunately. The surgery, along with some car trouble and the regular assortment of bills has put us in a bit of a bind financially. After not doing it for nearly 25 years, I've worked through two of my last three vacation weeks (the honeymoon notwithstanding) for the extra money. It looks like for the first time in about ten years, I will probably not be attending the National. I will miss spending time with you guys way more that I'll miss searching for bargains at the tables. As it is, I haven't bought a thing on eBay in about a year and the only time I've had to even enjoy my collection in the time since last year's National was the first month of the year by year project. That was five months ago. I don't think I've even opened the door to the closet in a month -that's how far my collecting interest has fallen. One of the reasons I decided not to be on the AC this term was that I was considering going on the inactive list. My level of activity has been so low that it just seems like a formality at this point anyway. I'll probably switch over my e-mail preferences to 'no e-mail' on everything but the announcements server soon, so you'll have to contact me directly if you happen to come across some extra 1963 Post SP's or Kellogg's variations I might need ;-) I hope to get back into things at some point in time, but things are not looking too good for the forseeable future. Take care everyone and I hope to rejoin the fun again very soon. TAYL, Ken M Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. One of the highlights was catching up with Carlos Alcazar. Carlos and I hit some tables together on Saturday followed by dinner and then a local establishmnet to watch the hockey playoffs while Carlos imbibed and I hit the munchies. Nothing like going from dinner to someplace to eat. While it was still a worthwhile show, the Toronto show does not have the same allure as it did a few years ago. Between my lists getting harder, many dealers not getting much additional material and going through there inventory at least a dozen times, card prices skyrocketing and inventory drying up, and most of all, the Canadian dollar strenghtening against the US dollar, the show is not nearly as good as it used to be or me. I was able to finish off 4 hockey sets. I had targeted 12 cards that would finish 7 sets. I got 4 cards completing 3 of those sets; 1951-52 Laval Dairy, 1960-61 Topps Hockey and 1968-69 OPC Hockey. I also bought a stack of 1968-69 OPC Hockey "Pucks" inserts which finished that set. Did I mention the Toronto show is known for its hockey? I ended up with about 83 hits in all covering 32 sets (although 1 set was UV). Obviously most sets only got 1 or 2 hits. Biggest hits were 1910-11 C56 Lester Patrick, 1968-69 OPC Orr, 3 hits to the 1950 Royal Dessert set, a T-205 Jennings, 4 1952 Topps Hi #s (boy are they expensive!!!), 3 1954 Blue Ribbon CFL (I only had 3 of 80 previously) and a 1962 Post CFL sp. I obtained some type cards, including what I am now told is a rare set; 1956 Wheaties/General Mills Great Moments in Canadian Sports; a 1955 hockey card from Bulgaria? anda 1956 English/ Soccer card. To replace the completed sets, I got my 2nd hit to 3 more sets; 1938 Chgurchman Golf, 1969 Jack in the Box Angels (what was that doing in Toronto) and the 1952-53 Anonymous OHL set (hey I just finished the 1951 Laval Dairy minor league hockey set). We all know the rule by now. 1 is a type card and 2 you are collecting them. 4 sets done and 3 more now being collected. I cannot let my lists get too short. Have to leave something on there for guys to look for. Also got hits to both the 1952 Parkhurst BB & CFL sets getting me closer to 1/2 way on both. Disappointemnts included not a single Coke cap, Shirriff, Salada or Nalley coin and no 1930s hockey hits. The OPC BB is really drying up. Mike has 2 entire rooms upstairs in his home where cardboard and other collectibles can be found. The first room has his SINGLES and TYPECARDS as well as the CLOSET, the second room has DUPES and his prized COKE CAP collection. There is another room up there and I think that's where Mike sleeps but I'm almost certain that there's probably cardboard in there but I've never been in there to be certain. On the first level of Mike's shrine is a cozy place to watch sports where Mike's dining room table is always stroon with collecting stuff that he is going through, organizing and working on in some way, shape or form. In his living room is a curio cabinet with glassware, signed balls, and various interesting sports collectibles that I have always found interesting. Another table in this area can often been seen with cardboard in various stages of organizing. Now most of you would think that to be enough but there is more, a trip to the basement at Rich's place reveals his collection of magazines, media guides, year books, and other such publications. Mike has cans and bottles as well as stadium cups and other sports memorabilia. Most who visit Mike don't spend enough time to even get downstairs as Mike has enough interesting things to look at on the first 2 levels of his home that you could spend a couple days just pawing through that. It was noticeably less crowded than past shows. I found a few good deals though and added a few hundred cards to my 59T set. My first stop is always to see Jack Zerby of ZZZZ's Vintage Cards. We talked about OBC and what we look for in dealers. He was sharing stories about Steve Rittenberg & Richard Kimball. I said "you mean the fuge?". And we started laughing and talking more about OBC. Then he says that he is holding some cards for the fuge and wanted to know ifI wanted to look at them. So he goes to this special treasure box and pulls out a plastic case of '52 Bowman. They are far too nice for you fuge soI creased and wrinkled them to make you feel better. We laughed about those cards a while too and tried to think of how I could tease the fuge saying that I liked them so much that I bought them. Actually that was my idea, Jack had already put the cards away and threw away the key. While talking and laughing I went thru the "low end" vintage box that Jack sells for 12% of BV. I picked out a lot that included '64T Tommy John RC, '64T Lou Pinella RC, '64T Al Kaline, '64T Yaz, 64T Aaron, 62T Maris Blast 61st, '59 Colavito and over a 100 of his buddies. For $100, I went away happy with a box ofnearly 50 year old treasures. It sure was fun putting those in the binders last night. I am not sure of what the protocol is to become an OBC certified dealer butwe should consider adding Jack to the list. He is retired and on the road a lot doing shows so look for him when you go again. He lives in NJ and is strictly vintage from pre war to 70s, with high, low and OBC grades. He knows the OBC mode of operation where we want the card, care less about condition and even less about BV. Who knows, when you run across him he may show you a stack that he has saved for my 59 set (right out of his "junk" box) and you guys can laugh too. I had fun. Thanks for the read. P.S. Mike Rich ================= Date: Mon, 19 May 2008 03:02:48 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "uthminsta1" Subject: COOL STORY Hey everyone. I have a story for ya. Been kinda busy these last few weeks, and that's probably not gonna let up much for some time, but I just have to tell you this one. A little bit of background. First of all, I'm a youth minister. Most of you know that, but just in case... Anyway, when I moved down here to middle Georgia, one of the things that the senior minister suggested was that, once in a while, I visit the students at their schools for lunch. I tested the waters, and saw that it was good - a different atmosphere, a chance to meet the kids in their own environment, away from "the church." It has really helped me develop relationships with several of them. One of the girls in our youth group has really always looked forward to my visits. She's just a good kid. She mentioned to some of her classmates that her youth minister was going to come eat lunch with her. Not a lot of the ministers do this sort of thing, so some of them actually thought it was cool... Over the years, I've often had the chance to talk to other students, who are not a part of our youth group. Generally, I talk about baseball with the guys, and talk about guys with the girls, right? Haha... anyway, it's gotten to the point that most of the students at all of the schools at least recognize me as "that one guy." One student in particular was very interested about the baseball talk, and started coming over to my table more often, asking me Braves trivia, and we would keep trying to stump each other. So one day I brought some cards to the school that some of you had given me over the last few years. Some 1950 Bowmans, and some other interesting stuff, and the autographed Bob Shirley cards that I recently got with some help from Bob Reed. And this young man was very interested. Come to find out... he collects cards, too. Now remember, he's a high schooler. So for him, when he's talking about having "some of those old, oversized Bowmans" he means the 1989 set!!! Haha, that actually happened, and I just had to chuckle. Anyway, one day I was talking to some of "our students," meaning kids who go to our church, about some stuff that we had coming up in the next couple weeks for them, and I notice that he's listening intently. He acts very interested. Tells me that he wants to come check out our church. Well, duh, of course!!! (THANK YOU OBC) So I say of course, my student gives him my cell number, he calls, I talk to his mom, we work it all out, she would be glad for him to come, yada yada yada... I still have thousands of cards to give away from the thousands and thousands and thousands that you all have sent me for the card group, but I jokingly told him that if he would come to FUEL (our midweek youth group), I would give him a box of cards. Yes, a bribe. But not really. Because all within the last couple weeks, he's been to our church on Sunday morning worship, Bible study, youth group, to see Prince Caspian with us, to watch a movie at my house, hanging out at Wendy's playing cards... he's already becoming a part of the group! (THANK YOU OBC) So after all this, he said, "So... about those cards... were you serious?" I took him up to my office and opened "the secret cabinet" that has all those cards stored and he just gasps. I hand him an empty 400 count box and say "go to town," and he digs around, finds some stuff, and takes it home. The next day he emailed me and told me he had put together a list of what was missing from the cards he had gotten... get this... he's put together a partial 1992 Studio set. Gentlemen, we have a set builder. Oh by the way. Back up a few weeks, when I brought some of those old cards to the school, he asked me how in the world I got so many old cards. I told him to look up oldbaseball.com... the next time I saw him, he said he read a bunch at the site, and thought it looked really cool. He was impressed and is continually amazed at how generous the group is. "You mean they just SEND cards to each other?" "Yep." And remember when I said he came to see a movie at my house? Well, we just did what was called Narnia Weekend; Friday night we watched the first Narnia movie at my house. Saturday, we watched the second one in the theater. Both great youth group events. Very fun. But while he was at the house, he said, "Hey can I see your card room?" I said "Honestly, if you see it right now, you'll never want to collect cards. It's a mess." But he insisted, and so I let him into the inner sanctum, and he just said "you've got to be kidding." We spent the next half hour looking at cards, until people had to start leaving, so I excused myself to say goodbyes. Then I realized a few minutes later he was still in my room. He asked if I would let him camp out in here. Since I was so embarrassed at how messy it was, he asked me (more than once) if he could help me organize it. So now I'm thinking about how I can do this. I already jokingly told him that I would give him 100 cards for every hour he helped me, and of course he said he would do it for free... So I told him that we would figure something out. He's really wanting to do something, and like I said I've got thousands of cards to give away, so I'll let you know what happens. It seems I now have a young Padawan learner. He is eager to learn the ways of the force. I mean of cards. :) Anyway, I wanted to let you all know that those cards you've sent me have an all new value. Thanks, OBC. My rating too, jumped up almost 25%. When eBay announced these changes a few months back, I jumped on the bandwagon because I totally like the idea that if a buyer pays in a timely manner, they cannot receive anything but positive feedback, and those retaliatoryfeedbacks are now a thing of the past. The design of this is to help buyers feel more confident about purchasing and paying on time, and not having to worry about retaliatory feedback if the seller screws up and the buyer leaves negative or neutral feedback about it. I honestly love the idea that sellers must now "perform," or the buyercan leave honest, negative feedback about it and the seller is only able to report that the buyer paid favorably and on time. I don't know why I've never noticed before, but while looking at the image it dawned on me that the card seems to be a fairly bad "mock-up" job. On further investigation, it looks as if they've taken the photo of Red Wings player Dean Prentice (as used on card #32) and simply cut and pasted Frank's head on (see attached). You can see that they also airbrushed Dean's #20 on his right sleeve out. At least OPC tried to show him in Wings uni, but was it really THAT hard to get a photo of a guy like Mahovlich? Despite the fact that he'd been traded to the Wings about two thirds of the way through the 67/68 season, both the 68/69 AND 69/70 Topps versions of his card still had him in Leafs uniform. ================= Date: Sat, 24 May 2008 18:16:42 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Originaleek@webtv.net Subject: A little help As part of my ancestry research I am going through stacks of letters to my father from various family members. Well, I can now say I went to a game at The House That Ruth Built before they replaced it. My daughter decided for a father-bonding event she would buy a pair of tickets to a Yankee's game and 'treat' me to an early Father's Day gift...not sure who treats who when the daughter pays for the ticket and dad pays for the hotel, the meals, the subway fares, etc, but that is another topic. She works for Delta so I flew stand-by to New York on Thursday and met her at the airport (she lives in Cincy). We got out of the airport, made it to our hotel, changed and headed to Grand Central Station to catch the train to the Stadium. Pretty interesting expereince just getting there....I lived in Dallas before moving to KC so it is not like I have never seen people before, but I think there were more of us in the train we boarded than lived in my hometown. Got to the stadium fine just in time for first pitch. Good game too .... Yankee's won in the bottom of the ninth with two out after the manager gets kicked out of the game. Spent about three innings with my daughter walking around the stadium and checking it out. When she was little I took her to a lot of Rangers games and she would love to sit in the stands and eat while I explained to her what was happening, so that is what we did most of the game. Too cool. A couple fo observations ..... 1. It can be cold in New York in May. I almost didn't bring a jacket. 2. I have really lost touch with the current game of baseball .... I had a hard time recognizing much of the Orioles line up and even thought "who?" several times for the Yankees and it is hrtd to escape news about that team. I know the teams from the pre-1980's era better than ever but have never been so out of touch with the current game. Am I alone on this one? 3. From the outside the new stadium is pretty impressive looking I am sure it will be great. 4. Yankee fans are pretty entertaining ... I had fun just sitting amongst them. They even left the few O's fans around us alone. 5. $9.50 for a beer is just plain wrong. Why doesn't Congress investigate that one. Nonetheless, it was good! 6. Don't try to fly stand-by on the Friday of a three day holiday weekend. With my parent status I nearly didn't make it back, but wtih three legs and 2 hours in a rental care (from Columbus to Cincinnati) I made it home. It was the first time I'd looked through it in some time, and I was instantly reminded that it was missing the middle pages. So with that, I'm now scouring ebay to try to find a replacement. However....... I seem to remember (from those idyllic days of my youth) that there were 2 versions of the 1970 yearbook. I believe that one was published early in the season, and may not have featured Denny McLain as he was suspended at that time. I think there was a second print run after McLain 's return, at which point they reinstated him into the yearbook. As I recall, someone who had been included as a "featured" player (i.e. full page including color photo + bio), found himself relegated to a "half-page/photo-only" guy (I could be wrong, but it may have been pitcher Jerry Robertson). If any of you have a copy of the 1970 yearbook, could you perhaps take a moment to have a look to see if you can identify any of the print oddities I've highlighted. It plays a range of music formats (not just mp3), and can also be used as a file storage device. You simply plug it into the USB port on your PC and it is instantly recognised as an external hard drive. All you do is just drag and drop your music or other files to/from it. Easy to use, great quality sound. Even so, I'm on the verge of upgrading to a 160Gb Archos 605 multimedia player. Not only does the Archos act as a music/video player, it also has WiFi capability with a full-function web browser. Hello all, This is another one of my Fun family days that I felt I should share with you. Last Sunday the wife and I were debating on what to do for the holiday weekend. I was working on Memorial day so we were going to have a BBQ on sunday, then we decided to take a day trip to see the Mets AA team play. We say Kids eat free and a nice Fireworks show after the game so we decided to go. The game was OK Mets made some BONE head plays on the bases...but I really dont want to get into that because they rallied from 8 runs behind to loose by 2 (the base running brain farts cost them 4 runs) ok ok Back to the fun at the park.....For $30 we had 4 front row seats, the Kids eat for free, each kid got coupons for a Hot dog, a soda, chips, popcorn, pretzel, and a bag of fruit. There were games for the kids to play and in the 5th inning the kids get to run across the field the kids love it. After the game the Umpire gave my son a ball. After the game my son asked (the 6 year old ) if we could try to get some autographs. So we stayed an extra hour, as the Reading Phillies came out of their locker room Tony was waiting with a ball and pen in hand. Well when the first player came out he ran up to him and said " Sing my ball please" and the kid from the phillies smiled and signed the ball and took a couple minutes to chat with Tony...made his day. Then More players came out and he stopped each player and each player signed...at one point 4 players came out at the same time and he put his ars out and said " I want all of your autographs you cant go until you all sign my ball",,,the players laughed and waited in line to sign his ball. One player who is a Phillies Top pitching prospect seemed alittle conceded and walked past the fans, Tony missed him as he was getting an autograph, so after he got the other players autograph he walked up to him and asked for an autograph, and the Prospect stopped and signed for Tony and again started chatting with him the adult fans ran to him and he wouldn't sing...he said " This is what its about not adults looking to possibly sell it" The Kid changed my look towards him. All said and done Every player and coach on the Phillies signed the Ball for Tony. Now being 6 Tony doesn't know the difference between MLB and minors The fact that every play signed for him made Tony so happy Amazing what being nice to a kid could do for him...He hasn't stopped talking about it all week.... Now back to my headline....When do the players forget what it takes to make a fan happy??? You go to a pro game and your lucky to get the worst player on the teams autograph, and if you get a good player its rare they spend 10 seconds with the fan let alone a few minutes chatting.....God not only for the price, but the memories is what makes Minor league baseball one of the Best family experiences.
