They're sold at my local grocery card in $25 and $50 increments. You scratch off the code on the back of the card and enter it into your paypal account. You can then usethis balance to pay. The amounts never expire and you won't have to worryabout the wife seeing the visa or checking account balances. I had never been to a NASCAR event before. But today was my lucky day, twice. I was a guest of none other than Larry "Guru" Tipton and his friends. Guru emailed me last week he was coming for the NASCAR races, which he has done for the past few years. Needless to say I was very excited to finally meet one of the OBC "Old Guard" and a legend. I originally joined in 1997 while I was working in Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territories. For you new guys that's your geography lesson for the day. Guru was one of the members who was very generous to me and has continued to this day, in fact was my OBC Santa this past Christmas. Now just how neat is all that. It was super spending the day with Guru and his friends tail-gating at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, talking cards and OBC history, eating some good food including some kettle popcorn that was scrumptuous, walking around the grounds and checking out all the exhibits, including a Navy recruiting van demonstration. And then sitting in some really sweet seats in the Dale Ernhardt Terrace and watching an action packed, if not accident-prone, event. The Navy sponsored a car in the race and the crew had done a great job of strategizing and was two laps from victory when an accidental bump put the car into the wall and ended their race. But what a great OBC day it was. Thanks Guru for the super invite. Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. He had a couple of extra days before leaving early this morning. So we arranged to have lunch together at one of the local casino buffets and it was fantastic. I think we both over-indulged a bit. Definitely a vast selection and was tough to leave having not sampled it all I had asked Guru previously if he wanted to get together with Mike Hair, another OBC legend, whom neither of us had met before. I was very surprised that neither of them had met each other before with all the Las Vegas events and Mike being the "official local host". I called Mike to see if he was available and we arranged to meet at his bicycle store near where he lives in Henderson. Not far from the casino where Guru and I ate and we headed off to meet him after finishing lunch. We had a great time for a couple of hours talking about a lot of topics which included old cardboard of course and some of our other interests and backgrounds. Again, it was like meeting a brother after years of being absent from one another. Just so natural. Unfortunately had to leave far too soon but Guru and I had some more plans and he was leaving very early in the morning. But we will definitely all get together next year when Guru comes back again. Mike and I made a date for some local Las Vegas 51's (Dodgers AAA team) games this season and maybe I can coax him back onto the links again as well. Mike had mentioned there was a new card shop a few blocks from his store and we stopped for a look. No surprise it was basically geared for the new stuff. The owner had a few vintage cards in cases, not graded, and definitely way over-priced for our tastes. Example; 1953 Topps Spahn for $175 VG at best from what I could tell without seeing it up close. Then we stopped into a couple of local casinos for a few hours to indulge in the popular Las Vegas pastime. Luckily enough we both left with a few more than we went in with. Anytime you don't lose is a good day and coupled with a chance to spend the day with a couple of really fine friends, just made for one super OBC day. So I do want to know when any of you others make the trip this way. I'm already getting psyched for Guru's next visit and for Kent Goto's arrival in May 09 for a bowling tournament he will be participating in. Huge thanks Guru for a fabulous time! The internet can be an amazing thing. As mentioned elsewhere on a Thanks email, Don Rice today sent me a bunch of 56 Topps - including a card of Tiger pitcher Jim Brady. Brady's card piqued my interest - at the bottom in the statistics box, it said "No previous experience in Organized Baseball." It turns out the old "Diamond Jim" was one of those 1950s Bonus Babies. Because of the rules of the day, he had to be kept on a major league roster for the year. It was pretty easy to learn that Jim didn't have much of a major league career. He appeared in 6 games in 1956, pitched 6 innings, and had a flashy ERA of 26+. That was all she wrote, he was never to be seen again. However, it took a little more research to determine that Mr. Brady had some other talents. While he struggled in baseball, he pressed on with education. He finally ended up as Dr. James Brady, Professor of Economics, and eventually president of Jacksonville University in Florida. I suppose that the moral of the story, if there is one, is that failure in the major leagues is not the end of the world. The question that I'd like to ask Dr. Brady, now that its all said and done - if he had the choice - would he give up the academic success for 100 wins in the bigs? ================= To: Date: Thu, 6 Mar 2008 08:59:00 -0500 From: Bob Reed Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] Bat acquisition I'm not sure which one Bama won but I suppose it looks something like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-SPORT-FLAT-BAT_W0QQitemZ220207538113 To: obcjohn@knology.net; OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.comFrom: illini_grad_90@yahoo.comDate: Wed, 5 Mar 2008 19:28:49 -0800Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Bat Bama --Send us the Ebay link so we can see it!Take Care,Geno--- "obcjohn@knology.net" wrote:> > Guys and Gals,> > I had a bit ofluck last night on Evilbay. FINISHED, OR THAT SET WAS NOT SHOWN: George Altemose, James Cooper, Jim Hatch, Brian Lindholme, Art Wainwright. Is there anyone else who is still working on 1973 Topps? SCD's guess was that (just) 20 years ago it was 90% baseball. Based on my own experience of the difficulty in buying or trading 60s football cards, I'll guess that the numbers were even higher for baseball in the 50s and 60s. It works best with 16 participantsso respond quickly or you'll have to wait until next year. The way it works is you get one team from each of the 4 brackets. One of your 4 teams willbe a 1-4 seed, one a 5-8 seed, one a 9-12 seed, and one a 13-16 seed. The sum of the four seeds will be 34. For instance you may get a 2 seed, a 7 seed, a 10 seed, and a 15 seed. Again, if your team wins you get cards from the owner of the losing team. And the good news is that Maureen and I, and 6 other friends, will be flying out on Wednesday morning to join them!! It's been a disappointing championship for Scotland. Hopes were high that we could contend for the title, but we lost our opening 3 matches against France, Wales, and Ireland.....and looked REALLY bad in doing so. Some pride was regained with a hard-fought 15-9 win against England on Saturday. However, the match against Italy will still be a "wooden spoon" decider. If the Italians manage to win by more than 4 points, they'll just creep ahead of us in the standings and we'll finish in last place. We're hoping that the team can pull it together and actually play the way that most people seem to think that they're capable of! We'll be in Rome for 5 nights, flying home on Monday. Whatever happens, I'm sure that a few beers will be sacrificed to the rugby gods, and will go a long way towards washing down copious amounts of pizza and pasta ! The day started with Mark Talbot picking me up around 9:00 am and driving me to the show. As we were about to walk in, he mentions he has something for me. A Tigers sked a 1968 miscut card (he knows I have an affinity for those type of cards) and then a 1948 Bowman BB #38 Schoendienst to finsh the first Bowman set!!! Are you kidding me? I have not even stepped FOOT into the show and I have already completed my 2nd oldest card set. At the show I was able to get a number of hits to assorted sets, but first there was seeing Mike Mroz and Ron Perry again. Naturally, they were at Mike Sandles table. Generally our fav dealer at thsi show, although Mark's fav Harold was also there. I did get some hits to my 1981-82 Topps Trio BSKB panels, getting that set to within 10 panels, with only 1 star remaining. A few hits to the Cramer BB Legends Series 4 set, upgrades to an unmarked 1964 Phil. FB last card checklist, was a pleasant surprise, but also a hit to the first Parkhurst hockey set, a 1965 Kahn's card (for a quarter from a collector who tracked me down as we were leaving, stating he knew I would want it), 5 1975 Twinkies, 10 hits to the 1964 Bazooka set (considering I only had 4 that is significant), but biggest of all (after the Schoendienst) was a total of 8 1955-56 Quaker Oats Hockey cards. This is a parallel set to the 1955-56 Parkhurst. Set of 79. I have the Parkies complete, but only had 4 Quaker Oats, after looking for them for 20 years. Now if I had obtained all 8 from 1 dealer, that would be explainable. However, I got the 8 cards from 3 different dealers. What are the odds to only having 4 cards and then getting cards from 3 different dealers at the same show? mark and I then ducked out for lunch, before heading to the Red Wings game, for a 3:00 face-off. The Wings jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and held on for a 4-3 victory. It was dollor hot dog day, but since Mark and I ha already eaten, we only had 2 each. Marked then dropped me off around 6:30, in time for me to be picked up at 7:00 to go to the Pistons game for a 8:00 tip-off. The Pistons also won. What a day! Meeting up with FOOT members, a card show, where I got some unexpected hits, A Red Wings game and victory and a Pistons game and victory. My ladies wouldn=92t know the difference between an Aaron rookie and a UV Adam Dunn game-used jockstrap insert card, not that I have one of those. So the question arises, what the hell do you do with all this =93stuff?=94 I guess there are a few options=85 -sell it all off before you croak, bring in the cash, which your survivors would understand better. (Not bad) -find a dealer you trust and ask him to take a percentage and give the rest back to the family (iffy) -have it set up with an OBC=92er to do the same setup (much better) -leave it for the family who doesn=92t care about the stuff to list it for sale on Evilbay (a lot of work, and they wouldn=92t have a clue) -ignore it until your number comes up, then it ain=92t your problem any more, and you won=92t care. Specifically I told him to contact Mike Rich for reasons Mike knows and I have explained to my wife. We also liked a race car board game called Huggin' the Rail, it was a hand me down from my much older brothers. Lots of other games were popular too - Clue, Easy Money, Like Ken, I also am a board game collector. The problem is unlike cards, they really take up a lot of room. Actually, I tend to have rotating stock, I buy some, sell some, and if I'm lucky I come out even at the end. There is a great site on Yahoogroups for baseball game collectors, they generate as much e-mail as OBC- Some of the baseball games are incredibly pricey - way out of my range. In 1984, I received the 83 version of APBA baseball. That led to hundreds of games between my neighbor and myself. We also tried a baseball game called Sherco. In 84, my buddy purchased a strat-o-matic set. We drafted a league, and I was on my way. I played in various leagues through the 2000 season, a few of them being keeper leagues. Back in 2002, at Christmas, my brother bought me a 67 reprint set. I replayed the 67 Bosox season. I lost to the Cards in 7 games - ouch. I absolutely love the game and I am hoping Fr. Pat makes his way up here for the National so I can help him in his 67 replay of the entire league. The 1952 Wheaties set appeared on boxes of Wheaties in, amazingly, 1952! From what I've seen, there may have been different numbers of cards on different size boxes. You just cut them off with your handy scissors, and you had your cards. No mail in that I'm aware of. There were 60 cards in the set from a wide variety of sports. There were 30 athletes pictured--one "action" and one "portrait" for each. I'm a little over halfway complete. As far as cost, they are relatively inexpensive. For many of the minor sports (skiing, bowling, diving) you can pick up nice cards for a buck or two. A few of the bigger names, like Ted Williams, Stan Musial, George Mikan, will cost a little more, but even they can be found for under $20 unless they are "PSA Mint 10+ Low Population One of a Kind" cards. I have even seen a few complete (or partially complete) panels of these. As far as size goes, no, they are not normal size--about the same as 1951 Bowman. If you decide to start collecting, let me know. I have a few dupes sitting around somewhere in my dupes box. Don't see these on too many people's wantlists. ---- DaPatriot1@aol.com wrote: > Hello all, > I was surfing Ebay and typed in 1950s cards and a few cards from the set > 1952 Wheaties came up. The main game was Strat-o-matic baseball. Dale Murray was the guy who won 20 games for me. Of course we didn't worry about innings pitched, his card was GREAT. I also remember the blank extra players cards and gave myself the .290 with the 2 column HRs. (I should have taken the .300, I have NO power). Somehow the computer version just doesn't do it forme. We'g head to someone's basement and have tournaments. I even made a copy of the game by hand so we didn't have to buy another set. Other games were Cadaco baseball. It was a baseball field with grid squares. You would configure each stadium with the number of squares. Dice and stuff were used. I liked that one a bit too. Bas-Ket is a classic, Shuffles (the guy with the shuffleboard and spring arm), Of course hockey with the "metal" players ( I was good at shoving that center with the back control and scoring). I had that game before the automatic faceoff thing. Electric football for some reason really sucked, but it didn't matter, You just line up all yourguys in a bunch, turn it on and watch a scrum. And don't forget getting your knuckles slapped around in noc hockey. Oh yeah and what was that hockey game the marble used as a puck with 2 players on each side? Don't forget crossfire with the metal balls you shot at a puck to score against your opponent. Sheesh did we play with dangerous toys or what? Its always funny until someone loses an eye! At 2 1/4" by 3 1/2", they are slightly thinner than modern cards. The fronts feature only a borderless black and white photo with a facsimile autograph. They are found with either square (probably reprints) or rounded corners and backs are blank. It has been suggested that these cards were distributed separately from the company's loves of bread, since the cards are rarely found with tell-tale signs of damage caused by the odd shape of bread. Some collectors refer to the set as "Homogenized Bond Bread," and that designation gets this set confused with the 1947 Bond Bread set. Both sets feature a similar design and are the same size. Bond Bread cards also have rounded corners. Both sets feature Jackie Robinson cards, however, there is advertising on the back of Bond Bread cards. The biggest difference is that while all 13 of the cards in the Bond Bread set feature Robinson, he is only one of 48 subjects in the Homogenized set. One aspect of Homogenized Bond that's not mentioned in most card guides is that the production is particularly rich in the New York-based teams -- seven Yankees, eight Giants and nine Dodgers. Among the "common" 24 cards there's included Hall of Famers: Lou Boudreau, Bobby Doerr, Bob Feller, Ralph Kiner, Johnny Mize, Stan Musial, Phil Rizzuto, Jackie Robinson, Enos Slaughter and Ted Williams. Then, among the so-called "scarce" cards in the production are superstars: Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Gil Hodges, and Pee Wee Reese. Be on the lookout for reprints of this set. Reprint sets have square corners and the artwork isn’t as clear as on the originals. However, you’d have to be looking at an original and a reprint at the same time to notice the difference unless you had really studied the cards in advance. A large quantity of half of the cards in the set was “found” in a New York warehouse in the 1980s. These cards had square corners and were then illegally copied. My impression is that many collectors consider the cards found in the warehouse to be reprints to start with, but it appears that is open to debate. From my research the square cards seem to fall into two categories...... (1) A second printing of only 24 of these BB cards was done when the manufacturer issued a Movie Star set sometime in the 1950's. (2) These same 24 BB players were again reprinted on inferior cardboard stock (date unknown, but before their big FIND in the early 1980's). In any event, the SQUARE cards are not to be regarded as the original 1947 issue. It appears that some of the major companies do not grade Homogenized Bread cards with square corners because of the possibility that they are reprints. Others don’t grade Homogenized Bread at all, because someone could take a square-corned reprint, round the corners and try to pass it off as an original. 1) Rex Barney (2) Larry Berra (3) Ewell Blackwell (4) Lou Boudreau (5) Ralph Branca (6) Harry Brecheen (7) Dom DiMaggio (8) Joe DiMaggio (9) Bobbie Doerr (10) Bruce Edwards (11) Bob Elliott (12) Del Ennis (13) Bob Feller (14) Carl Furillo (15) Cid Gordon (16) Joe Gordon (17) Joe Hatten (18) Gil Hodges (19) Tommy Holmes (20) Larry Janson (21) Sheldon Jones (22) Edwin Joost (23) Charlie Keller (24) Ken Keitner (25) Buddy Kerr (26) Ralph Kiner (27) John Lindell (28) Whitey Lockman (29) Willard Marshall (30) Johnny Mize (31) Stan Musial (32) Andy Pafko (33) Johnny Pesky (34) Pee Wee Reese (35) Phil Rizzuto (36) Aaron Robinson (37) Jackie Robinson (38) John Sain (39) Enos Slaughter (40) Vern Stephens (41) George Tebbetts (42) Bob Thomson (43) Johnny Vandermeer (44) Ted Williams (1) Primo Carnera (2) Marcel Cerdan (3) Jake La Motta (4) Joe Lewis These are the suspected REPRINTS BB players...... The library was also a good place for football, much quieter than basketball. --- In OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, Geno Wagner wrote: > Glenn -- > It was the days before the three-pointer! From: Glenn Codere Subject: A visit to Rome (an epic story of Morganti-esque proportions!) By popular demand, I've been asked to report on my recent visit to Rome, Italy. Maureen & I and my buddy Kenny flew out on Wed (12th). Ultimately, there would be 8 of us sharing a 4-bedroom apartment. The 3 of us would be the first to arrive. An uneventful flight via London Gatwick saw us touch down in Rome on time - about 6pm. The transport system in Rome is terrific, and the airport train station was only a 3 minute walk from the baggage claim area. We caught a train to Trastevere station, which was less than a quarter mile from our apartment. The apartment was great! In a nice part of town and plenty big for everyone. One great feature was the elevator that took us up to the 3rd floor - a rickety old wooden box that could accomodate 3 people at a squeeze. The hinged doors opened manually (inward, of course, just to add to the awkwardness), then you opened the main cage door before stepping out on to the landing. The car seemed to have a stopping tolerance of about a foot in either direction. Sometimes you stepped up from the car, sometimes down. The first order of business was stocking the apartment with food and drink. There was a small local supermarket, and a few deli's nearby so off we went. We came back with a great selection of fresh meats, cheeses, breads, fruit, a variety of juices, and our prize purchase, a gallon of red wine. The vino cost less than 10 bucks, and turned out to be surprisingly drinkable. Our next stop was a nearby restaurant for dinner, then we got settled into a local pub which was showing the Fiorentina(Italy) vs Everton(England) soccer match. 5 or 6 beers later - round about 11:30 - another 3 of our group arrived. They came straight into the pub from the train station figuring we'd be there. Our reputation precedes us........ We woke the next morning to find the last couple of our party - Dan and Claire - had arrived. They had flown from Glasgow to Paris, and had travelled from there to Rome first class on the overnight sleeper train. By the sound of things, it was a terrific journey. Both Thursday and Friday were spent seeing the sights, overeating and overdrinking at every opportunity. The Peroni and red wine count was rising fast! Finally, the big day had arrived. Saturday would see us attend the Scotland vs Italy rugby international match in the afternoon. We rose early, donned our Scotland jerseys and kilts and prepared for the day. All except Dan. Dan - who plays amateur rugby for a team in Glasgow - had been asked to turn out as a guest for another Scottish team against a local Italian club on Saturday morning. He had a fair old whack to drink on Friday night, but did us proud by not only managing to get up in time, but also by playing the full game AND scoring the winning try (similar to a touchdown in US football) on a 40 yard burst in the last minute of the game! After Dan's game, we all headed to the Piazza di Popolo, where the Scots contingent traditionally gather prior to the big match. This was where my secret weapon really came into its own. Prior to our trip, and unknown to all but Maureen, I had tracked down and purchased a pair of Scottish flag contact lenses (see the attached photo). I popped them in first thing in the morning, and strolled casually out of the bedroom. I stood behind Claire - who was drying her hair in a living room mirror at the time - looked over her shoulder and asked her if she noticed anything different. She looked up kind of puzzled and said "You've shaved?......" Then it dawned on her. She let out a scream. They worked a treat! Back at the piazza, I had loads of people coming up to me asking to have a look. Some people were really freaked by the lenses, others thought they were incredibly cool and wanted to know where to get a pair! After another round of Peroni's, it was time to head for the stadium. The park was packed with 26,000 enthusiastic Scots and Italian fans. Rugby still isn't quite as popular in Italy as it is in Britain and France, where crowds of 75-80,000 are common for international matches. The Italians realise this, and deliberately play at a smaller venue so that a great atmosphere can be generated. Today's game, along with England v Ireland and Wales v France, was the final round of matches in the annual 6-Nations championship, a series which for all intents and purposes is a Northern Hemisphere championship (the remaining major rugby playing nations are all located in the southern hemisphere). Scotland had had a particularly poor series so far, despite beating England the previous week. Italy had also fared badly, losing all 4 of their previous games. The situation was that Italy had to beat Scotland by 4 or more points in order to avoid the dreaded Wooden Spoon.....a last place finish. The Italians started brightly and took an early lead, but the Scots managed to get their game together and despite some poor play by stand-off Dan Parks got into half time with a 17-10 lead. Before I go on, let me explain a little about rugby positions. Two of your key players on the park are the "scrum-half" and the "stand-off". These are the guys who mainly dictate the play when your team have the ball. They operate as a partnership. In US Football terms, think of them as sort of dual quarterbacks. Anyway, Scotland's current stand-off, Dan Parks, has a bit of a love-hate relationship with the fans. We all just love to hate him. Most fans realise that the guy is simply not up to the standard required for the international game, and few can understand why he continues to be selected. Today, on a day when he was really needed, Parks decided to have an absolute stinker. Probably his worst game in Scotland colors - and THATS saying something! It was his handling error that led directly to Italy's first-half try. Now, in the second half he decided to go one better. The Scots held things close throughout the half. It was a bit of nail-biter for the fans. We had a Peroni vendor permanently perched within easy reach of our group. The only time we let him go was when he had to re-stock. Going into the final minute, Scotland led 20-16. The only thing that could beat us now was a try (5 points), followed by a successful conversion (2 points). Then along came Parks. With Scotland in possession, and looking like winding down the clock, the ball comes to Parks who for some unexplained reason takes it on himself to pass the ball out towards the wing rather than simply carry it into the tackle and retain possession. His pass was anticipated by one of the Italian who deftly stepped up, intercepted the pass and powered downfield, offloading the ball to a teammate 10 yards from the line who carried it over for a try. A successful conversion later, the score stood at Italy 23 Scotland 20 and Dan Parks himself had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! It was a tough pill for the Scots to swallow. The Italian fans were going nuts. They were in full party mode. There was nothing else for it. We'd just have to join them! Despite the loss, the 3 point margin was just enough for Scotland to avoid the Wooden Spoon. We filed out of the stadium and headed for Piazza Navona, where the bars and restaurants were jumping. The sun was shining, and even in defeat the Scots were determined to have a good time. We ended up in a small bar that had the England v Ireland match on big screen, and soon noticed that we were standing right next to former Scotland captain Rob Wainwright. We had a good old chat with him, bought him a couple beers, took one in return, and moved on. A few of us headed back to the apartment for a bit of freshening up (we really needed it by this time), and we arranged to meet up again in a particular downtown bar. Getting there on time meant that we had to partake of the thrill of a Roman taxi ride. Remember the dodgems at the fairground when you were a kid? It doesn't even come close! These drivers don;t have licenses.....they have black belts in driving! Fortunately, we survived the experience, and went on to party well into the evening, finally getting back to the apartment in the wee small hours. Quite a day! Our last full day, Sunday, was a little bit of an anti-climax to be honest. We did an open-top bus tour of the city, ate some more, and generally just chilled out. One very good move we made was to find an internet cafe and check-in online for our flights home the next day. Turns out that very few had done this, and the lines at the airport check-in desks on Monday were horrific. We just walked straight up to the fast bag-drop counter, and were on our way in 2 minutes! Sunday evening was spent having an EXCELLENT meal at a samll restaurant in the Trastevere area of the city. If you ever make it to Rome, be sure the check out this area, as its just brimming with great little bars, restaurants, and piazzas all off narrow cobbled streets. Another uneventful flight home on Monday saw us arrive back in Scotland, where we both had the rest of the week off to recover from our travels. We're already planning our next rugby roadtrip, hopefully to France in Feb/Mar 2009. If the story above has inspired any of you to feel you might like to come and join us, you'd be most welcome! ps Not only did we finish off the gallon of wine, we also made a hefty dent in a bottle of 10 year old cask strength Macallan Single Malt Whisky that I picked up in the duty-free shop on the trip over. The perfect way to finish each of our 5 evenings in the Eternal City. pps Regretfully, we didn't make it along to a restaurant which had been recommended to me by OBC's very own Mr Coffee, Mike Diamanti. We passed it on our bus tour, Mike, but I'm afraid a closer inspection will have to wait until our next visit! Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Hi, Guys and Gals. I'm Mike Rumley-Wells. I was just voted into OBC on March 12. Since then, as predicted, I have been on the receiving end of an onslaught of cards. I can see I'll need to be a lifetime member just to balance the accounts. A few of you probably read my application, but I'll just repeat here what I wrote there by means of explaining how I fit into this group: I think sharing extra cards makes sense, and hoarding extra makes...less sense. I won't get religious (and I'm a pastor, so I'm capable of that) but sharing with those who don't have when you DO have, that's a great thing that makes you feel really good. And receiving the true generosity of others is a great thing, too. So maybe the question is not "Why do those nuts on OBC just send their valuable cards to anyone who needs 'em?" but rather "Why doesn't more of the world work like OBC?" So, that's why I asked to join the group. Well, that's the first of two reasons. The other is that I really love collecting cards. I grew up loving baseball, lived a block from the park and rode my bike there every day I could to play until it got so dark that we were in danger of getting our teeth knocked out by fly balls. I started watching professional sports literally at the moment when Reggie Jackson hit 3 homers in 3 swings in the World Series and co-incidentally my t-ball team that same year was the Yankees--and I was hooked. I wanted to be the shortstop for the New York Yankees when I grew up. I've been a Yankee fan ever since, from rural Illinois, with no better justification but with absolute loyalty, including the abysmal years from 82-95. (Okay, the strike shook my dedication for several years.) Dad was sort of an anti-Cubs fan (he called them "the Scrubs" and called Harry Carey much worse but listened to nearly every game on WGN), but/so he accepted my pinstripedness good-naturedly. Sports was always the best medium for our relationship. So in 1978, he introduced me to collecting baseball cards--which spread to football, basketball, and hockey cards. My '78s are a particularly well-loved vintage. I spent hours sorting, studying, comparing, trading...and it shows on every card. I can still recite Ron Guidry's 78 pitching stats, when most likely I could have used that brain space for something more valuable between then and now. Like many of you, my collecting bio has a long lull, basically from late high school through college and grad school, all the way until my dad died, my mom remarried and sold the house, and I got my old cards back. This was a very difficult time in my life, and I got a little obsessive about the cards--my wife describes it as the worst time of our marriage (15 years in April). It happened to coincide with the Ichiro craze and the start of game-used, et al. I spent lots of money and eventually realized I was more playing the lottery than collecting cards. I'd hoped to sell some and make money to support my collection, but it turned out more "buy high, sell low." Mine is not a great business mind. So I set it aside for a few more years, though I'd glance back at them longingly every now and then. I hadn't yet figured out how to enjoy the hobby as a _hobby_. Being obsessive as a nine-year-old probably kept me out of worse trouble, but being obsessive with a wife, three (now four) kids and a vocation? Not so great. So last fall I went back and, with some carefully squirreled away birthday and gift money (thus legal to spend on whatever), I bought some cards (yes, on ebay) and started back to working on vintage sets, my wish list of cards I'd hope to own someday, etc. I had stumbled across OBC in 2001-02, when I was at the height of my nuttiness, and even then the group appealed to me. I tried to make a few contacts then, but it didn't really pan out. I still had to get my values back to being lined up with my collecting. That was the key to enjoying it like a kid again. And so, in aught seven, I looked up the group again, and stumbled upon Cap's description of the candy store steps. After reading it, I told him: "Our town (pop. 2,200) didn't have a candy store, but I would ride my bike to our grocery store and grab all the packs that I could afford with my pocketful of scrounged change. I collected cards because it was a fun thing to do with my dad. He would tell me stories about Stan Musial and Ted Williams while I opened my packs, spread out my whole collection on the floor, and checked off my checklists. So yeah, I get it about the candy store I also got caught up in the craze of more manufacturers, more sets, and sticking locks of hair and pieces of clothing into cards...until I realized that I wasn't having any fun and people were playing the lottery more than they were collecting." Cap and I traded, he encouraged me to try some other folks on the list who were just as encouraging, Rick Johnson swapped with me and sent a ridiculously wonderful boxful of my favorite players, and here I am. Happy to be on board, happy I read the archives and know not to start a discussion on "Vintage vs UV," ;-) and hopeful that I can find a good balance in my life for this hobby I enjoy so much (and WHY? anyway? What's so appealing about cardboard with guys' pictures on the front and numbers on the back? I'm still trying to work that out). I'm pretty sure that qualifies as rambling. If you read all the way to the end to find out, thanks: my 8-year-old daughter, Annalise, had a seizure today, her first ever, and it scared the expletive out of us. Not an easy night to sleep, though I should have, hours ago. Annalise is our Miracle Girl, born at one pound, eight ounces, given no chance of surviving by several doctors, and setting the new record for causing physicians to say, "I can't believe she's doing so well! I can't explain it." She's recovering from this, too, and I believe she'll be fine. But reading your old ramblings, harrangs, and jibes was the highlight of my day--except that my wife brought me packages from Aaron Shirley and Earl Kilbourn, for which I will send proper thanks to the appropriate group, but you guys ROCK! Thank you. ================= Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 04:19:42 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Glenn Codere Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] introduction OK, so who's responsible for letting another Yankee fan into the group???? Isn't spring break grand! I have been eyeing Craig's list for collectibles of the cardboard sort. Missed one opportunity recently to grab some nice cards and was determined not to let that happen again. I saw and add for some '65s that included about 180 cards including Aaron, Mays, Koufax, Rose, Drysdale, Gibson, Kaline, Yaz and some other gents you may have heard of. I called the nice man and asked if I could come check out the cards. In fact he had '66s and instead of 180 it was closer to 300 and all singles as far as I can tell so far. Most of the cards have rounded corners and many have creases, but no writing, staples, or missing paper. Severeal of the short prints were there, including the Perry. Um - and I paid $90 for the lot. He was asking $50 but then realized he had almost twice as many cards as he had advertised. Craig's is my new best friend. Had to share and I knew you guys would understand. However, in this case it is addition to my list that is a good thing. I had go to Park City, Utah for a work-related meeting, which involved flying into and out of Salt Lake City, which is the home of OBC's own Marshall West. Marshall was kind enough to pick me up from my hotel and give me a tour of his work (we're both Air Traffic Controllers, although Salt Lake is much busier than Great Falls). We also talked about baseball and baseball cards; Marshall showed me a copy of a 1964 baseball card price guide--it really made me wish I had a time machine! 52 Topps high numbers for a buck a piece, and a T206 Wagner was $250. Marshall handed me a few cards (If he has found the time machine, he didn't let on) from my list including a '69 Jim Palmer and a couple of 62 Posties which are in much better shape than the rest of my set. All in all, it was a great visit, albeit not long enough. Marshall took me over to catch my flight which if you could walk would take about 5 minutes, but since there are no roads to connect the tower to the terminal, took about 15 minutes to drive! Within minutes, I spotted George Vrechek who updated me on his show findings and gave me a lead on some 53 Topps. George and I bumped into each other a few more times at the show. It is always fun to talk with George, get an update on variations, and just to talk baseball. While I was sifting through some oddballs at another table, Mike Wierzbicki handed off a few hits. Two 57's and a hit to my 58 set. Thanks Mike. Mike was able to find a few 59 fleer Teddy Williams cards in the oddball stuff I was looking through. Finally, I bumped into Gary Mandell at Bill Henderson's table. Gary helped me sort through some 50's cards, pulling all the 54-56's that Bill had. After checking the nearly 150 cards, I found a 56 Frank Torre to scratch off my list. Thanks for the help Gary. As far as the show went, I was able to put a good dent in my 33 Goudey set at Bill Henderson's table. I chipped 16 Goudey's off my list, at an average of 3-4 bucks a card. In addition to the Torre card, I picked up a few cards for my vintage Red Sox / White Sox collection. a few Topps doubleheaders, and a Diamond Star. At Uncle Dick's table, I was able to pick up a good number hits to my 52 Bowman set, as well as some 53 and 54's. I also picked up some 53's at a few other tables. Overall, it was a great time.
