As an interesting twist, a friend of mine and former employee is a real good friend of Jim Thome ..... they get together regularly and he has gotten me a few pics and autographs.  I haven't decided if that makes it worse or better!  Nevertheless, the Twins had a great season and surprised many ... including myself.  One more win over the Royals in the last series though would have been nice.

It turns out when I set up the list long ago, SCD listed the 25 cards in alphabetical order. On the backs of the cards there is a checklist. At some point, SCD switched from the alpha checklist to following the checklist on the back of the cards. On my have list I had listed a couple based upon the alpha list and a couple on the numeric list. I will update all 8 I have to the numeric list. Just under a 1/3 of the set, so a nice problem to have. As posted earlier tonite, Brock sent me a 1934-6 Diamond Star #68. A large percentage of this set has variations, based on the year of issue, 1934, 1935 or 1936 and some 1935s come with the same back but in green or blue print. My SCD does not list #68 as having a variation, but yet the PSA lable mentions this is a green back. Anyone ever see a #68 with a blue back??? Amazing that 70-100 years later we are still determining master checklists for relatively well know sets. I also went through the Chronological list of sets in the back of my old SCD to determine how many different vintage base sets I have completed. According to the sets listed, I have now completed 193 1980 and prior BB sets. Remember some sets count more than once such as 1974 Topps, 74 Topps Traded and 74 Topps Team Checklists, count as 3 sets. Checking other sports, shows 84 vintage FB, 20 BSKB and 71 hockey for a total of 368 1980 and prior sets completed. While some sets are in reach (1951 Topps Bluebacks & 1963 Salada BB Coins are down to 3 ea.), more likely is finding complete TCMA sets for sale to add to the total. 400 sets are within reach, but not much more. The one thing about Mike's collection besides quantity that should be mentioned is variety. Mike has some very unusual items in his collection from his beloved Coke caps (Mike is a bit of an expert on these) to rarities like Diamond Matchbooks, Parkhurst Baseball and Laval Dairy Hockey. Congratulations Mike on approaching "400" - I think you have already achieved Hall of Fame status. BE WELL!!! REGARDS -------------------- MARK -------------- Original message -------------- From: "mikesportsfan" While reviewing my Prewar wantlists I noticed that I had wrong numbers listed on at least 1 set, the 1909 E-95 Philadelphia Caramel. I wonder how many sets I can get at least a type card from. I finally managed to get my hands on an LP of "The Best Of Waite Hoyt In The Rain" last week. Hoyt spent many years calling Reds broadcasts, and during rain delays he would tell stories about his playing days. This partuclar LP has 9 cuts & runs about 43 minutes. It was issued some time in the early 60's. Of the 9 cuts, 4 cuts were recorded between 1956 & 1959; the other cuts aren't dated. Among Waite's stories -Reading Ernie Harwell's "A Tribute To Baseball"; -Relating how he almost won 20 games for the 1st time - until Babe Ruth came in to pitch as a stunt & blew a 7-run lead; -A story about the 7th game of the 1926 World Series; -A story about being young, bored in New Orleans - and getting arrested. I've copied the LP into MP3 files, so if anyone would like the entire LP on CD, let me know; since I'm going to make a copy for myself it's easy to make extra copies. The quality isn't the greatest - lots of scratchy LP noise (after all, the record is about 45 years old), but it's still great to listen to. Drop me a line & let me know if you'd like a copy. ================= Date: Tue, 07 Oct 2008 00:50:12 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "rlabs1" Subject: hotel? My wantlist has been very tough to hit for a while now. A few people have told me to add other sets or perhaps error cards or variations. Well, since I moved to Alabama, I've actually moved in the opposite direction. No, not UV. I mean that I havent spent any money on cards at all. Just working on other things I guess. I've lost weight. I'm still a scary, fat man (Ken!) but not as much so. And then in July, I started getting hits to an unpublished wantlist. Girlfriend? Yep, checked that off the list. Steady girlfriend? Yep, that one too. Last Saturday I received the best hit possible to my wantlist. I've arranged to acquire a 1960s Gina Williams (NrMt+). I've graded her as a PSA 10 (Pretty, Smart and Affectionate). This card will be proudly displayed. I plan to take it with me to all future Nationals and regional shows where I can show it off proudly. Now for some Q&A: Q: Where did you acquire this Gina Williams? A: I tried ebay, Craigslist and a few similar places. We ended up finding each other on match.com Q: How long has she been in your collection? A: She's actually a recent acquisition. I spotted her in July and immediately knew I had to have her forever. She felt the same way. Q: What condition is she in? A: I'd describe her as "vintage" with no creases and perfectly rounded corners. I'm working on getting a scanned photo available. Q: Is she part of a set? Or a series? A: She's the only one in her series. I will meet her original owners in a couple of weeks. Interestingly, Gina comes with her own 4-legged insert set. Whitney, Z, Oddball, Callie and Smokey also become part of my collection. Well, Whitney is actually a 19 y.o college student but she is still part of the insert set. Q: What is her favorite baseball team? A: Gina likes the Braves but makes up for it in other areas. She already knows she should root for the Red Sox. In exchange, I will root for Auburn and against Alabama. Q: When do you take delivery? A: I am still negotiating with the supplier. Unfortunately, Gina Williams is only in stock in one location about 150 miles from me. I will not take delivery until the actual purchase is made and the lifetime ownership contract has been signed. Q: What affect will this acquisition have on the rest of your collection? A: As stated in my opening remarks, very little time has been spent with the rest of the collection since I've relocated to Alabama. With the addition of Gina Williams to my collection, I hope to get it better organized some day. I've already told her that the National is an important part of my life. She replied "Ok. I can entertain myself while you are at the show." If there are further questions, please ask. This was, by far, the best game I went to this season. I am exhausted from it. If not for Utley's terrific double play, then it would have been a Dodger victory for sure. BTW, Manny seems to hit the ball at will...I think he is batting .500 for the playoffs and is certainly carrying the Dodgers right now. BTW, something is wrong with Ryan Howard. My only regret with yesterday is that I, my wife, my son and my daughter-in-law all received our "sorry, but all our World Series tickets have been sold to scalpers" email from phillies.com. My son and I drove 800 miles roundtrip last Thursday to see the Phillies beat Sabathia, and were hoping that by some slim chance we would get tickets to a game in either Philly or Tampa (also a doable drive from Raleigh, so I entered there lottery too). On December 25th - Christmas for some, the fourth day of Hanukkah (I think), the winter solstice or Yule for pagans (not sure if we have any pagans) or just a fun day to get a gift. Rules (the fine print) 1. Gifts should be in the $5-10 range. The best gifts are not usually the most expensive. Try to get creative. 2. Envelopes should be clearly marked "do not open to Dec 25" or "Do not open till Xmas". 3. Open your present on the morning of the 25th 4. Report your present and who gave it to you on the ramblings server How it works. 1. Reply to this email, that will make it easier to track things or send an email to me with "OBC Xmas" or "OBC Holiday" in the subject. Please include your name just to make sure I don't mix up your email address. 2. The Beckett had them at $600, $200, and $80 for the commons. It had all four sports, plus golf and racing. It also has a section on non-sports cards - again of the vintage variety. It's definitely worth picking up if you see one at Barnes and Noble. I'm not sure I need to subscribe, as the prices don't change much, but it is a good reference... Take Care, Do You Yahoo!? As one of the more active chapters of OBC, we try to find a reason to get the group together. The return to FOOT territory, by Glenn Codere, had us all a twitter, trying to decide what we could do. Initially a private show, with OBC fav dealer, Mike Sandles was a possibility, but that had to be shelved. Plan B worked out quite well. There is a local show, called Gibraltar. This was a well known show years ago, being a weekend show every month or so, either Gibraltar North or the original Gibraltar location, which are giant flea market like locations, with permanent dealers, that reserve a "show area" and rotate, card shows, gun shows, and other collectibles, etc. Unfortunately, this show has shrunk to about 1/8 of its old size and the attedance is also way down. When I arrived, Mike Mroz, Glenn Coderre and the soon to depart John Dahms were already there. John had to leave and soon MarkTalbot, Earl Kilborne and Ron Perry were to arrive. Having,Mike, Glenn, Mark, Earl, Rona dnI all descend on a dealer's table at once, primarily in OBC shirts and hats, was interesting to see teh dealer's reaction. Mark's fav dealer, Harold, started raising his voice, that we could not all be there at once. He could not deal with all the haggling! Harold did quite well, as a few picked up his OBC conditioned cards. Glenn needed to be reintroduced to negotiating at card shows, instead of accepting dealers sticker or quoted price. As Glenn was loking at one dealers table, I walked up and informed t he dealer, Jason, that Glenn was a member of the group and had come from Scotland. He therefore deserved consideration in pricing and that I epxected him to give Glenn at least 1/3 off. Jason grumbled, but complied with the plea. Glenn had the most success at the show, which was to be expected. I picked upa few items at the show including some Kessler Fan Guides from 1962 & 1963 (how many of you are collecting these???), a 1943 Tiger Sorecard and a 1934 Diamond Star variation. Eventually the list for teh variations will make it to my wantlist. After the show, we adjourne to Mike Mroz's abode to watch the Michigan vs. Michigan State game. Maybe it is because Michigan is having a horrible year, but there was little harrassment of who people were rooting for. Normally, this rivalry can result in major ragging. It may also have been because of all the fod and cardboard flying about the room. Thanks will be posted on those servers, but we all got something eaither at the show or at Mike's. At the show I was given my highlight of the day. A complete, mounted in the album, set of 1935-36 Wills English Soccer cards. This was brought from Scotland by Glenn. Prior to last month, this would have qualified as my oldest compelte set of cards. This is a spectacular looking set. Glenn is well aware of my fondness for oddball items and that I actually collect foreign cards, including English soccer. Of the set of 50, it appears I only had 2. I actually had brought them with me to show at Mike's house. I have some other years of Wills English Soccer cards and this helped me realized the 1/2 dozen ihave are from different years. Mike and his wife Andrea (who I have known for longer than I have known Mike, in a bit of irony, as we used to work for the same company and now work across the street form each other at competing company's), put out a small spread. A bowl of potato chips, 3 or so burgers and a couple of kosher hot dogs (there really is a HUGE difference) later, I was ready to swap cardboard. Found a few hits, and guys were pulling out miscuts, blank backs and wrong backs for me. Before leaving, Mark Talbot busted out a box for us to play pack wars with, and I donated a few 1979 Dearborn card show type cards, as bonus cards for winners (4 guys, as Glenn had left and I only had 3 of these and all seemed to want a type card). Then Earl Kilborne passed out "The Official Foot Manual". complete with a table of contents, Membership Roster, Membership Requirements, a list of HOMers for FOOT (and TOE) members, FOOT definitions, terms and FAQ's, plus a compilation of Tiger cards from 1909-2002. A fantastic piece of work. Mike Mroz already objected the checklist was not complete enough and brought out another checklist which will eventually be used to supplement this first draft. It was decided that the manual should be placed on the OBC website. Please note for those wishing to apply for FOOT or TOE membership, that I believe a consensus was reached to permanently prohibit any Yankee fan from being admitted. I have been to many Nationals and National swaps, traveled to a 1/2 dozen or so OBC members homes outside of Michigan, but there is nothing like a FOOT gathering. Thanks guys for another special day. Our gathering was a result of a visit by OBC & FOOT member Glenn Codere from across the pond. Given the nature of the event and the fact that we had 6 and a half FOOTs in attendance it qualified as a FOOT Fest as defined in the Official FOOT Manual, and I quote: "a major FOOT gathering of several FOOT members to celebrate a significant event or happening which would include a FOOT Feast and card swapping." It was all of that and more. It was the first time most of us, if not all, met Glenn who was accompanied by his lovely wife Maureen. In addition to previously mentioned Mark, also in attendance was Ron Perry, Mike Rich, Mike Mroz and of course myself which collectively numbered 6. John Dahms was there as well but since Mark and I missed him and he was unable to attend the post card show invasion of Mr Oz's residence he constituted the half. Sorry I missed you JD , hope to meet up with yo u soon. Upon my arrival at Gibralter Trade Center, aka big a-- flea market, Mike Rich greeted me with the OBC hand shake, slipping me 3 hits to my 72 set and an scp for my 58 set. We then struck out to find more FOOTs and spotted an OBC hat several table over. Under the hat we found Glenn rifling through some boxes of cards and I was able to add one more to my OBCers I have met list. Another OBC handshake and I procured a 56T Virgil Trucks and a 61 Fleer Schoolboy Rowe from Glenn. Eventually I ran into Ron Perry, Mike Mroz and Mark Talbot. Mr. OZ handed me a 78 Tastee-freez Mark Fidrych (I still haven't found a list so I don't know if there are any other Tigers I should add to my wantlist) and Mark offered up a 54T Kuenn, a 62 Post Colovito, a 67 OPC Freehan and a Hall of Fame post card featuring Hal Newhouser. Among my findings at the show were an upgrade 59 Kaline, a Kuenn for my 58T Tigers autographed set & a few psycho hi #s. I also picked up a few UV Tigers sets for my Eat, Drink & Ch ew binder. A couple of quick Foot prints ie group photos taken by Maureen, we formed a 6 car caravan to the Mroz Mansion for our Foot Feast. Somewhere between Mike setting out snacks and Mark & the other Mike hauling in boxes and binders for show & tell, we met Mrs. Oz, Andrea and their daughter. After we finally figured out which one was which, we entered the multi-tasking phase of watching the MSU vs U of M game, chowing down, card swapping and conversating. All too soon it seemed, it was time for Glenn and Maureen to depart and we said our good byes with hopeful promises of future get togethers. It was indeed a pleasure to meet you Glenn and your patient spouse. Following Glenn's parting instructions for us to enjoy the rest of the evening, we did just that. Somewhere along the way I managed to find untold treasures in each of the dupes boxes provided by Ron, Mike, Mike, & Mark. What I took from whose box, I know not, however I I left with any number of 72s and HOM/HOFers I didn 't have when I arrived. As things were winding down Mike Rich offered each of us a TCMA All Time Tigers set which I promptly took him up on. Mark then offered 8x10 photos of donut king Mickey Lolich which I also gratefully accepted. As a wrap up to our evening, Mark pulled out a box of Topps Mini Leaders and we all enjoyed a game of Pack Wars. We extended our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Mike & Maureen for hosting us and I headed back to Grand Blanc much richer for the experience. Thanks again to all. The only downside of the entire day were the missing FOOTs, John McLaughlin and Chuck Paris, who we were holding out some hope for. Understandably absent were outstate FOOTs George Moore from Virginia and Walter Guthrie from Colorado. Also absent was Art Wainwright who none of us have spoken to are are dubious regarding his existence. If you're out there somewhere Art, give us a shout! In addition to usually seeing Carlos Alcazar, new OBC member, Gord Ellis will probably be in attendance. Bad part is Gord is usually there on Fridays and Carlos on Saturdays. As is my custom I am willing to be a designated shopper for an OBCer that is looking for some special Canadian issued item. Specifically if you are looking for an OPC, World Wide Gum, Parkhurst, etc., LMK condition and price you are willing to pay and I will see if I can find it for you. This applies to single cards, large lots or complete sets. With the recent improvement of the US $ vs. the Canadian $, I am hoping prices will be better than 6 months ago. I will probably be targetting Parkhurst Hockey, and hopefully some Post Canadian BB & CFL, but I never know what I will find. Some of my best buys at this show over the years have been US issues that I just happen to stumble into. ================= Date: Sun, 26 Oct 2008 21:43:38 EDT To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: typecard@aol.com Subject: 1962 Jello Research Results Content-Language: en I aggregated seven collections of these tough cards. 384 total cards were included in the analysis. The OBC holiday card exchange. For those of you who are new, or have bad memories, the holiday exchange is when participants are randomly assigned the name of another participant to buy and mail a gift to the person they have been assigned to. Report your present and who gave it to you on the ramblings server ASAP. How it works. 1. Reply to this email, that will make it easier to track things or send an email to me with "OBC Xmas" or "OBC Holiday" in the subject. Please include your name just to make sure I don't mix up your email 2. Wait a few days for a message from me telling you who your victim is based on a patented semi-randomization technique involving paper, scissors and a hat. 3. Buy something nice, wrap it, mark it "do not open" till the 25th, and send it out. Happy Holidays! My previous copy was the 2003 edition. I haven't had it long enough to compare the listings, but for the PCL stuff I concentrate on I don't see any differences. Idon't pay much attention to the prices because for the PCL stuff it doesn't seem very accurate. The CD was the main reason I upgraded. The CD is the whole book (includingimages) in a pdf format and is searchable. Because it is a pdf file you can use it under any operating system. The file size is 169,801 KB. I havea eeePC which is a small computer about the size of a DVD player and weighs under 2 pounds but doesn't have a powerful processor. I took a pdf editor and created a new pdf file consisting of only the vintage major and minorleague listings. That file is only 64,233 KB and works quite well on my mini Be careful in buying the book without seeing it because it comes in two editions - with or without the CD. Of course, the edition WITH the CD will cost you more but again, the CD was my main reason for buying it. Hey fellas and lady. Tomorrow is the fist of the month, so I would like to take this chance to invite everyone: come over to the OBC Year Project group, and list your 1969 wantlists... then share your 1969 dupes! Yep, we finally made it to the sixties. I hope that means a few more guys will give it a try. If you have not yet joined "the project," check it out: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OBCYearProject/?yguid7916831 or email me at uthminsta@hotmail.com to join, or for more info. I've kept it a closed group so that only OBCers can be members. Happy halloween...
