So, knowing that I'm being a sucker, I slap down $3 for his remaining bricks, and they are mostly 70s and 80s football and baseball - not really a ripoff, some decent cards, but nothing really special - except for the 15 1955 Bowman football scattered through them, including two Giffords and a Joe Perry - and I actually got 3 hits to my short wantlist. And the sad part was the guy said he had sold 22 more bricks that morning, and they all had at least 5 1955 Bowmans. Still a few good deals out there, guys.... It was the first time, John and I have been able to hook up since. John has a great condition and it is always a pleasure to look at what the cards originally looked like, instead of the conditio most of mine are in. I have been trying to entice John into adding more sets to his wantlists, so I can find things to swap with him. I took a few binders with me to show John. My Goudey, Red Man and then my fav album of eclectic items. John was very impressed with the Goudey's and was not aware fo teh date variations on the Red Mans. But he also thought my fav album was the best. Looking at 1948 Kellogg's pep, 1950 Topps Magic Photos, some E cards, T-202 Triple Folders, Kahns, SCFC & 1955 Topps Doubleheaders are among the cards in the album. John had most of the 1950 Tpps Magic as a kid, but sadly they did not make it to adulthood. He showed me his set of 1964 Auravision records and a couple of 62s. This was funny, because I have the 62 set and not the 64s. he showed me some 1979 Hostess Panel variations, that I was not familiar with, although they are listed in the big SCD. Not that the set was complete, bu now I am further away. We swapped some 62 Post FB shortprints, so I am down to 3 (have not quite caught up to Peter Mead yet). We also swapped an Armour coin from 59, as he is within 2. He also let me ransack his Jell-o and Post card, as he is not working on it seriously. I got a sp 1963 Post #87, a 62 Jell-o and 18 63 Jell-os. I am down to 70 for that set. Before the National I needed over 1/2. I thin k I am down to only 3 for a mixed Post/Jell-o set. The highlight of meeting up with John are the stories we tell each other. Years ago he swapped a ton of Hostess panels for a complete set of 1952 Bowman BB! John, before his health issues, played softball with a former NFL player, Perry Richards. He has a 1961 Fleer FB #130 card. If anyone has extras, I would appreciate them for John. Ok Here we go....To start on Wednesday my wife went out with her friends so i decided to take the boys to the B-Mets vs New Britian Rock Cats (Twins AA) double header and we had a blast. My son Tony had a ball and got the ball signed by the entire NB team...then Tony was hi fiving the players all game as they walked to the dugout...we were sitting 1st row on the 3rd base side. During the game some players still walk from the dugout to the bull pen and vise versa and every time tony was a player he would jump up and hive five them and they hi fived him back....now on the 5th inning the kids get to run across the field so my boys lined up during the inning to run and their was a guy with his family next to us....a player hit a foul grounder to him and he let the ball bounce off his glove and the umpire caught it...now mind you this is an umpire my little son tony was talking to every 1/2 inning, so the ump threw the ball to me since my kids weren't around i saw that the guy had his family, so i gave him the ball he was so appreciative ...I've always believed that no good deed goes un noticed.....well 3 innings later i catch a foul grounder ball right in my glove with my boys their...awesome....then the next inning one of the players that Tony hi fived like 10 times walks over to tony during the game and hands him a couple balls Tony went nuts.....then during the 1/2 inning they had the t-shirt toss and Robbie caught a T-shirt. Later the boys were drinking soda out of Coke cups and they camera man zoomed in on them and they were on the big screen TV score board, and won the coke caught red handed contest, and won a case of coke each.........then we went home....What a night boys said they had the time of their lives. Now I wake up the next morning at 9 am and decide summer is over and I want to do something with the family boys and wife. so we get in the car and drive to Cooperstown NY home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Now normally we go to the hall during the week during school so its always dead....today it was packed, and I loved every minute of it. We first walk around the town because the stores their are like museums my sons are enjoying it. We walk into the Cooperstown Bat store and have a bat engraved for Tony commemorating his first trip to Cooperstown, Robbie didn't want one because he said "I already have one"...LOL love him. So now we enter the Hall. The boys are very quiet in the shrine part with the plaques Im snapping pics and enjoying every minute. Then my older son asks me if Babe Ruth is in the hall and if so could he take a picture with his plaque...Wow I was so happy. Now we are done with the shrine so we walk around the hall and hear a game is going to start in 5 minutes so we go to play, and its MLB who wants to be a millionare. We play and i get picked because im wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers hat. It a team , and we loos ein the 5th question oh well it was fun. We looked around took pictures on the Ebbets field, Polo grounds, and Shibe park seat. My boys took pics with Babe Ruths, Joe Dimaggio, Lou Gehrig and Ted Williams Locker cool. My older son was in awe he loved the hall. After the lockers we watched a little movie about baseball and it was only 13 minutes but the boys loved it. they have the theater set up like a ball park. It was fun. after that we came up to a TV where they were playing bloopers and funny things, and my sons for the first time saw the Abbot and Costello "Who's on first' bid and they Were hysterical. We walked down to the baseball card section and my boys are going crazy looking at all the cards and saying Dad has that one and that one...lol it was great. After 4 hours in the hall we decided to leave and walk around the town. We walked around for an hour or so and looked at stored and found the restaurant that me and my son went to last time and he wanted to go back. so we walked looked at the menu, and said lets eat here, but lets go to the hall store and buy our souvenirs before they close then eat. We head to the hall and I see a very big man out of the corner of my eye and look at him and say to the wife " Hey that's Dave Windfield " he looked at me and smiled said hi I asked him if he would take a pic with my boys and he said absolutely. He was noting but a gentle man he and I talked for a minute or so...it was great talking to a H.O.F.er and my son Robbie was so excited when i told him he was a H.O.F.er.... ok we went to the hall bought some stuf and ant to dinner...My sons said to me Dad we had the time of our lives... This morning, I got in a small lot of Exhibits containing, among some that I need, another Maglie. Much to my amazement, I found that this new Maglie was not "made in USA", but instead was "PRINTED in USA"! ACK!!!! If you keep 'em and work on them both you will just take more time to complete them. If you trade the Bowman's it will get you closer to the `53 Topps but if you ever decide to go for the Bowman's again your in the same boat. I have many sets on my list (not as many as Mike Rich, but I'm a close second) and I added Bowmans about 5 or 6 years ago. I'm close on `54's and `55's, approaching on `51's & `52's and quite a way off on the others but they still provide many with "hitable" lists that allow others to help me enjoy my hobby. I look at it this way - I expect to be collecting cards a long time so what does it matter if I'm collecting 5 sets or 50 or 500, as long as I am enjoying the adventure. I'll look and see if I can hit both of the sets in the coming days and help you with your decision. Even I have slipped UNDER the 500 set level. The thought of working on 500+ sets makes me dizzy, but excited. Although there is great pleasure in finishing a set, at least I think most of us feel that way, I agree with Mark in that there is no rush. Much of the thrill is in the hunt. One of the major reasons I like having so many sets on my lists, besides giving others more things to shoot at, is that when I go to a show, I do not feel compelled to pay whatever the few dealers want to charge for the cards in just a few sets I want to concentrate on. I can look for the best deals at the show and I therefore end up with more material. Even if the best deals are stuff I have, I still pick it up with the hope/expectation to swap it within the group for something I can use. The downside of course is that I finish fewer sets, as it gets tough to find a good deal on cards needed to finish a set. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 74 vintage sets that I need 5 or less to finish. Recently I finished up my run of OPC BB, by begging a few people to send me their singles, on sets they were not close to completing, and then hopefully I was generous in my return fire. I may do that again for certain sets such as 48 Bowman and 51 Topps Bluebacks. Down to under 5 in each set. Many of us, from time to time, has swapped some or all of the cards we had in a set, only to later work on the set. Most of us regret having to "replace" cards we once had, especially the stars or shortprints. Summary: Do not TRADE all your cards in 1 set to build another. That goes for Bob Donaldson and his T-206s also! For those that know me, finding out that I am abnormal is no shock. The cardiologist put me on a low dose of a beta blocker (25 mg) to "decrease the liklihood of a future stroke or heart attack". Friday, I had called my regular doctor's office to get a refill for my triglyceride med (my triglycerides are out of whack, plus my colesterol is high). Friday afternoon I get a call from a medical assitant of my regaulr doctor asking why I have not seen the cardiologist in a while (2 months). She said it appears I need a hear catheritization. EXCUSE ME!!! I call for a refill of 1 med, and I get a call back telling me I need THAT??? I immediately call the cardiologist's office and they say nothing is indicated on my chart. Call back to the regular doctor and get him on the line (cardiologist was not in the office) and he says he is aggresive and thinks I am a likely candiate for teh catheritization. I told him I am on a low dose of a beta blocker. He said, he still thins I should have the catheritization. Needless to say, i am waiting for tomorrow to get ahold of the cardiologist. Right now, my next appointment is not for a month, but I am substantially concerned. I was feeling fine, UNTIL, I got the phone call. Now every breath, has me listening and feeling for "problems". Then I started thinking about how awful the Robinson trade was for the Reds - and came up with a fun (I hope) idea: Pick your favorite team - and then list their three WORST TRADES EVER, and give us a brief explanation. Remember, just pick your own favorite team - & let's see how many different responses we get. Now, no need to go digging into the Baseball Encyclopedia for trades - looking for stats is OK, but off the top of your head, name the three worst you can think of. Free-agent signings do not count - these have to be actual trades. I'll go first: My favorite team is the Reds. At first I thought the Robinson trade was a no-brainer at #1, but I've reconsidered. Here goes: Reds worst trades ever: 1) In 1900, the Reds trade P Christy Mathewson to the Giants for P Amos Rusie. Mathewson proceeds to win 373 games over 17 years in a HOF fame career as THE best pitcher in the NL. Rusie? He pitched in a grand total of 3 games for the Reds, with - count 'em - 0 wins, & an 8+ ERA. Oh yeah, the Reds got Matty back in 1916, when he won his final big league game with them. Worst. Trade. Ever. 1A) 1965- Reds deal Frank Robinson to O's for Milt Pappas, Dick Simpson, and Jack Baldschun. Reason? The Reds GM stated Robinson was "an old 30". Breaking news: "old 30"-year old guy wins AL MVP in 66, leads the Orioles monster teams of the late 60's & early 70's, becomes one of the most feared sluggers in the league, hits almost 600 HR - yeah, "old". Sure. 3) 1976 - Reds trade Tony Perez & Will McEnany to Montreal for Woddie Fryman & Dale Murray. This ripped the heart out of the Reds lineup, & led to the demise of the Big Red Machine; Johnny Bench said Perez was the guy that held the team together. His replacement- the reason the Reds traded him - was the immortal Dan Driessen. Fryman? Ugh. He was over 40 at the time. I could have pitched better, and I was a mediocre 14 year old 2nd baseman. My biggest memories of Fryman - he punched out somebody in a brawl, & in the 1976 SSPC set he posed wearing a freakin' ladies' sun-bonnet. Perez went on to have a few more verrrry productive years for Montreal & Boston before age caught up with him Reds fans, did I forget any obvious ones? Tiger fans - is your team's worst trade the one tha tnettedDoyle Alexander? Mets fans - trading Seaver? Trading Ryan? C'mon everyone - discuss! Remember, this is all in fun - no wagering! ================= Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2007 03:45:50 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Mike Mroz" Subject: Re: Worst trades ever As a Tiger fan, I would propose the following: 1. Altogether there are 13 birthdays within our immediate family, which translates into 6 separate birthday celebration gatherings. Also I: Attended 1 Family Reunion & a wedding. Spent 2 weekends at my grandsons quad races. Took 3 weekend trips "up north". Finished 4 major projects from the honey do list. Completed restoration on our 74 MGB. Attended a weekend MG Rally. Hosted 3 back yard BarBQs for friends & neighbors. Filled in for 6 vacationing therapists as part of my "on-call" employment at Insight. Took 3 of my grandchildren to The Detroit Zoo, Children's Museum & to several local beaches and a water park. Not to mention numerous trips to eat and play places like Chuckie Cheese, Inflatable World, and of course McDonald's. We also had 2 of the grandkids over for a weekend and 3 others over from friday morning to monday night Labor Day weekend. Of course having a pool means that even the older grandkids love coming to grandma & grandpa's house frequently. I think that's pretty much it except for one last thing. Thanks in great part to OBC, The DZK Memorial Foundation sent it's first child to U of M Hockey Camp. I will be sending out an E-newsletter detailing the specifics as well as a copy of the article written in the local paper. Valacak" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Worst trades ever Here are a few that really got me burnded up with the Red Sox. The first happened at teh trade deadline in 2003 when the Red Sox packaged Freddy Sanchez and a few others out to Pittsburgh for Jeff Suppan. Suppan was supposed to provided some needed help on the bump. Instead, he helped nothing butthe opponenets BA. Sanchez won the league batting title last year. Fortunatley, Suppan did play a role in the 2004 Red Sox championship. In game three, with the Cards threatening,Suppan's baserunning blunder at third got the Red Sox and Pedro out of a jam. The Cards would not threaten again as the Sox held on to take game 3 and wrap up the series the next night. I guess I can't be too upset. My next trade is more of a STUPID trade than a WORST trade. In Feb of 2006the Sox sent Bronson Arroyo to the Reds for Wily Mo Pena. The Red Sox felt that the were rich in pitching and they could afford to send Bronson packing. They had talked aobut trading Arroyo, so it wasn't really a surprise. What displeased me was what they got back and the timing. They traded him for a back - up outfielder. Last year, the Sox had Manny in left, Coco in center, and Trot Nixon in right. Papi is the DH, so that leaves no spot for Wily Mo. His defense is terrible, so he cannot be a late inning defensive replacement. I felt the Red Sox should have waited for a better offer, even going into the summer before trading away Bronson. Let some team overpay. Ironically, the Red Sox were so deprived of pitching that they eneded up picking up A player the Royals had put on waivers to help fill out their rotation (Gabbard). And what about Wily Mo. He was traded this year tothe Nationals. I had to laugh when I heard Theo Epstein (Sox GM) talking about how they just couldn't find a spot for Wily Mo. They thought he might be able to fill in for an injured outfielderhere and there, but the Red Sox really had no injuries. WHAT? You traded for a guy knowing you had no spot and you hoped he would be there to fill in an injury void. Terrible move. Nice thread Tom. I have enjoyed reading these worst trades. Go BEARS! ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Housley To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2007 10:20 PM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Worst trades ever As I sat this morning (5 am - don't ask) watching the DVD of Game 5 of the 1970 World Series, I saw ex-Red Frank Robinson blast a HR against his former team, and ex-Red Mike Cuellar settle down after a rocky 1st to tame the fledgling Big Red Machine. ================= Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2007 14:10:13 EDT To: tvalacak@comcast.net, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, DirectorTH@aol.com From: Wite3@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Worst trades ever Not so much a trade but Pee Wee Reese was stuck in the Red Sox farm system for nearly 10 years before being sold to the Dodgers...can you imagine the Sox in the 40s with Williams, Doerr, Pesky, and REESE! The Red Sox must have signed him when he was about 10 years old! They probably signed him based on his prowess as a marble-shooting champion, rather than his ability to play baseball. As far as the Dodgers and Clemente, they had Carl Furillo, who was better than Clemente. And Furillo was a team player and not a crybaby. Lacy was effective for a while...with the Pirates since the Braves dumped him not long after getting him, so we downgraded from Dusty to Wimpy and a utility guy. 1980/81 - Traded the Sarge Gary Matthews to Philly for Bob Walk?!?! Sure, Walk looked mildly effective in the '80 postseason as a rookie, but he was hardly the recipe for long term success. Sarge still had several good years left for Philly & the Cubbies. 1983 - By far, the WORST deal I can recall as a kid that had me hating my home team for a year (and then suffering with them for 7) was our knee-jerk reaction to the Dodgers getting Rick Honeycutt (who the Braves could've had themselves had they parted with Ken Dayley...ugh!) The Braves were bilked by Cleveland into thinking that Len Barker had something left in the tank, and ponied up Rick Behenna, Brook Jacoby AND Brett Butler to procure Len's services! Behenna for Barker could've worked straight up, as both developed sore arms quickly and had minimal (if not downright negative) impacts on their new clubs...meanwhile, Butler became a premier leadoff man and perennial all-star, and Jacoby had a couple big power seasons at 3B w/ the Tribe before succumbing to injury probs himself. It still makes my blood boil nearly a quarter century later. And, a dis-honorable mention goes to the Braves front office that could've finally gotten one right had they not believed the hype. In the days before completely unfounded internet rumors when newspaper reports in the sleepy South usually had some substance, the Braves in '88 decided to peddle franchise face Dale Murphy, and the Mets looked to be a worthy suitor. The reported offer on the table from NY was Rick Aguilera (pre-lights out closer days), Lenny Dykstra (pre- Nails/leadoff catalyst w/ Philly days) AND Howard Johnson (still a 30- 30-30 HR/SB/error threat) for the Murph. The Braves and their crack scouting team were convinced that Aggie wasn't the arm they wanted and HELD OUT for Mets wunderkind David West (yes, the immortal Dave West who might've later pitched 200 innings in his life for the Twins.) The Mets - to their own eventual relief - balked, and the Braves savvy front office settled for Philly's offer of a bag of batting practice balls and some splintered bats...a.k.a Jeff Parrett, Victor Rosario & Jim Vatcher. As is often the norm for our gatherings, the folks from furthest away arrive first and the folks closest arrive last. Geordie from central California and John McLaughlin from Toledo were the first to arrive. I arrived shortly after from Grand Blanc and the 2 locals, Mark Talbot and Mike Rich came lollygaging in last. It was great seeing John, Mike & Mark again and was indeed a pleasure to meet Geordie and welcome him to South East Michigan. Unfortunately the Royal Oak Elks Club show is a shadow of it's former self, with mostly UV and wax at the tables. One of Mark's favorite dealers, Harold does have some vintage if you search enough. However, as we know so well, it's not just about the cardboard, it's about friendship and camaraderie. Each of us did manage to find some stuff we could use, albeit mostly of the shiny variety. I picked up 21 2007T Heritage, only 3 of which I needed since I didn't bring my wantlist and had to rely on my unreliable memory. I also picked up 7 2006T Heritage, all of which I needed since I had that list with me. There is a moral there if I can remember it for the next show. I picked up some odd ball Tigers and Stars cards, including a 92 Front Row of Michigan native, Derek Jeter who looked all of 13 years old that year when he was named Mr. Baseball in Michigan. I also picked up a few 2007 Allen & Ginters and Goudey Tigers. I'll be adding these to my UV Tiger Team sets when I locate the checklists. I did manage to pick up 1 vintage card, a 73 Mays for really cheap. Eventually we were able to pry Mark and Mike away from Harold's table before we passed out from malnutrition. Mike led us to a local eatery whose name I don't remember but I had been there before and remembered the cajun ribs. We were barely in our seats when Mike pulled out his customary coupons and laid them on the table. While ordering, John and I stuck to our individual orders of half a slab of ribs despite Mike's accusations that we were whimps for not ordering a full slab. Mike then went on to extol the financial advantages of John & I splitting a full order and getting doggie bags to take home any excess. When we once more stuck to our individual orders Mike again called us whimps and even suggested that I was a chicken and afraid to take ribs home to my Jewish wife. I denied that accusation since my wife is working out of town. Once we were provided with our beverage of choice, Geordie broke out the box of 2007 Allen & Ginter's he bought at the show and gave each of us several packs to open. Opening packs of cards is a definite OBC bonding process and was pretty much the clincher in providing Geordie with TOE status. His final hurdle was listening to the adventures of the Motor City Motor Mouth as Mike regaled him with tales of his criminal past as a ticket scalper. Mark, John and I agreed that to date we had only heard the digest version as Mike provided plot twists and turns not previously revealed. We were all on pins and needles waiting to find out how many years Mike had to serve in the slammer. Unfortunately we cannot reveal the answer, as to do so would preclude the mystery for the next OBCer who ventures into Tiger territory. Overall it was a most enjoyable evening spent with the FOOT contingent of OBC and meeting Geordie for the first time. Meeting folks like Geordie remind me how fortunate I am to be in a group with people of class and character. Of course no OBC gathering would be complete without flying cardboard, so I'll catch you in a few on the Thanks & UV servers. We had a great time throwing names out there - Was it Elrod Hendricks? Sandy Alomar? Randy Hundley? John Roseboro? What about Matt Batts? Matt Nokes? Tony Pena? Gus Triandos? It was interesting that along with Mike Rich, EEK Kilbourne, Mike Mroz and myself who were throwing out the names a nearby Tiger fan who introduced himself as Randy (I think) added to the discussion as well. Anyway here's what a little research I pulled up reveals to those who might be interested: STOLEN BASES CAREER CATCHERS CATCHER SB 1 Doggie Miller 211 2 Wilbert Robinson 196 3 Ray Schalk 176 4 King Kelly 163 5 Jack O'Connor 159 6 Chief Zimmer 151 7 Jason Kendall 150 8 Roger Bresnahan 147 9 Buck Ewing 141 10 Red Dooin 133 STOLEN BASES Since 1900 CAREER CATCHERS CATCHER SB 1 Ray Schalk 176 2 Jason Kendall 150 3 Roger Bresnahan 147 4 Red Dooin 133 5 Carlton Fisk 125 6 Johnny Kling 123 7 Ivan Rodriguez 106 8 John Wathan 101 9 Billy Sullivan 96 10 Brad Ausmus 95 STOLEN BASES SEASON CATCHERS Catcher YEAR SB 1 King Kelly 1888 56 2 Buck Ewing 1888 53 3 King Kelly 1890 51 4 Jim O'Rourke 1887 46 5 Artie Clarke 1890 44 6 Jack Doyle 1893 40 T7 Tom Cahill 1891 39 T7 Herman Pitz 1890 39 T9 John Wathan 1982 36 T9 Pat Dealy 1887 36 T9 Buck Ewing 1890 36 STOLEN BASES SEASON Since 1900 CATCHERS Catcher YEAR SB 1 John Wathan 1982 36 2 Ray Schalk 1916 30 3 John Wathan 1983 28 4 Jason Kendall 1998 26 T5 Craig Biggio 1990 25 T5 John Stearns 1978 25 T5 Roger Bresnahan 1906 25 T5 Ivan Rodriguez 1999 25 T9 Johnny Kling 1902 24 T9 Ray Schalk 1914 24 Some of these names did come up - Kendall, Ausmus (jokingly), but we did miss the mark with Watham, Biggio & Fisk. Well we had a great time at the game despite the 2-0 score, great weather, decent seats and of course fabulous company. Fittingly Pudge who motivated most of the evening conversation bounced into the final out of the game with a couple in scoring position in a bang-bang play at 1st base; his speed almost kept things going. Another noteworthy play or "non-play" was by a fan just a few sections over. The fan missed a foul ball that made it to the 300 level at Comerica (tough to do in the 1st place) as it passed right through his hands, bounced behind him and back over the rail to the 200 level. Two pitches later another foul ball is hit to the exact same fan who once again has the ball land in his hands only to drop it to the fan directly below him. The odds of getting a foul ball are certainly stacked against any fan but to have botched 2 foul balls in this fashion was certainly phenomenal, one of those rare moments that don't make the highlight reels. Regards to the aforementioned FOOT members for a delightful evening - The next FOOT gathering is likely to be October 14th at the Redford show - all are invited. BE WELL!!!! I was the first to arrive because I'm the furthest away. Mike Mroz is catching on fast as he was the next to arrive. I think he is the next furthest. At any rate Mike correctly assumed that I was EEK aka Earl Kilbourn. Please note there is no e at the end of my last name, contrary to some FOOT members insistence on putting one there. At any rate, Mike and I introduced ourselves and almost immediately the cardboard started flying. Like I said he has caught on real fast. We chatted for a few minutes until Mark showed up, and more cardboard started flying. As is the custom, Mike Rich was the last to arrive & a little more flying cardboard ensued before we all piled into my vehicle and headed in the general direction of Comerica Park. Since Mike Rich was riding shotgun I reminded him that the extent of my job was to aim the vehicle and cause it to propel down the highways & byways. The navigation was his job, which he performs to perfection, unlike the aimer. He remained relatively calm as he saved us from going the wrong way on one way streets, told me well in advance when to turn, and used great restraint in not grabbing the wheel. Once we were safely parked, we made the short trek to Comerica, arriving just as the National Anthem was finishing up. Mike, Mike & myself applauded Mark for the great seats just kittywhampus of and well above home plate. We also applauded the weather man who gave us a perfect night to watch a ballgame. As reported during the game I-Rod stole second which resulted in a discussion regarding what catcher holds the record for most lifetime steals. At first we suggested a few folks that we believed might actually own the record, however the conversation soon deteriorated into seeing who could name the most unlikely candidates. Soon we were joined by another fan who was actually trying to be reasonable in his guesses. At one point he remarked on how impressed he was as we rattled off catchers from years ago and included the years they played and for whom. We informed him that all we had to do was visualize our binders and the cards in them to come up with all the names. He looked rather dubious at times & I think he was suspicious that we were making names up. To summarize we all agreed that it was another funfilled FOOT gathering. I always get a "kick" out of our get togethers and I got to meet Mike Mroz to "boot". Of course it would have been even more better had our beloved Tigers not been defeeted. I'll close now and go to Thanks now that Mike Rich is assured of being the last to report. Many pieces of cardboard criss-crossed the airspace between the Kolenda household and Scotland since I joined OBC about 10 years ago. Quite a few emails were exchanged, too. Since I've happened to bring the old Ramblings address to the fore, I thought I might take the opportunity to say hi to everyone, let you know what I've been up to, and what my future plans are OBC-wise. For the newer members out there, I'm Glenn Codere, a Tigers fan and former native of Detroit who, as fate may have it, has been resident in Scotland since 1973. I joined OBC about 10 years ago and due to other life committments went on the Inactive list about 2 years back. So, what have I been up to in that time? Well, perhaps the most significant development has been the loss of my Dad, who lived in Arizona. Dad had been ill for some time, and Maureen (my wife) and I had been travelling out to see him as often as we could. It was a bit of a drain on our finances, but worth every single penny. We were with Dad when the Tigers clinched the AL championship last season, but had to fly back home just before the start of the World Series. During the 8th inning of Game 5, at 3:30am here in Glasgow my phone rang. I knew what it was before I answered. Dad had passed away on the same night that our beloved Tigers lost the Series. I was unable to get back to attend the funeral, but the family arranged a military service for Dad in July, which we flew out to attend. The service offered me the closure that I needed. On happier topics, Maureen and I have been doing a lot of work to our house while at the same time trying to cut our expenditure. Rising mortgage rates and too much reliance on credit cards put us in a bit of a tight spot, but we're coming out of the other end of it now, unscathed and still smiling! One of the things we had to do was downsize our car, which meant trading in our beautiful purple PT Cruiser for a compact. Oh well. We've also been regularly following Scotland's international rugby team. We've attended most of their home games over the past 2 or 3 seasons (last year's win over England was SWEET!!), and travelled to Rome in March '06 to see them play Italy. We're currently making plans to once again follow the team to Italy in March '08. Hopefully, the Italians will be looking for revenge for their defeat at our hands in the final group game of the World Cup - to be played this coming Saturday!! On the card front, I haven't been able to donate an awful lot of time or resources to my collection until just recently. Steve Rittenberg did some much appreciated shopping for me at this year's National which allowed me to knock some biggies off my list, including a few Mantles! I've been snapping up a few bargains from Sims Classic Sports along the way, and find myself starting to get the itch again. Thanks to this activity, I've found myself updating my wantlist again - the first time in almost 18 months!! My sincere hope is that I'll be in a position to re-activate my OBC membership some time early in 2008. I may be attending a conference in Mexico City which dovetails beautifully date-wise with next year's National in Chicago. If all goes well, I'd love to attend and meet up with old (and new) friends again. Well, that's about it. My very best regards to all (and a special hello to those wacky FOOT guys!). Talk to you again soon! We spent the morning out shopping for several hundred dollars worth of Halloween decoration for the house - a far cry from my former ideaof the holiday by putting on my wizard's hat and passing out candy to the dozen or so kids that still bother to go out trick or treating in my neighborhood. The news of David's passing has saddened me a great deal. I had the good fortune meeting him on several occasions in Vegas, Ft. Washington, and the NationalConvention (the first time I attended it in Chicago a few years ago). David offered tolet me spend that week at his beautiful home just over the border in Indiana. That gesture was only the tip of the iceburg concerning his amazing generosity. His e-mail signoff of "I gott'em, need'em, you get'em" is one of the fundamental ideals of this great group. It's such a shame that some of the newer members didn't get to experience his sense of humor generosity due to his inactivity and health. I will miss him. I've been hopelessly inactive with cards since I returned from the Nats in Cleveland. The only activity I've done on eBay is selling of a dozen or so lotslast month to try to recoup some of the money I spent there (and thereby appease Stacey). The number of simultaneous home projects is getting to be overwhelming. There's three rooms in the house at various stages of reconstruction involving repainting the walls and/or the ceiling. So most of the inside of the house resembles a war zone, with the from two or more other rooms strewn about with various tools and such. Future plans also call for the removal/addition of carpeting... and then maybe we'll start onthe kitchen and basement. All of this while trying to balance 50 hours a week working overnight getting a couple hours sleep, so I don't pass out into a bucket of paint ora case of yogurt is proving to be a little more difficult than I thought (especially at my advancing age ). Anyway, I won't bore you all any further with the details of my furiouslychanging day to day activities. Hopefully I'll find more time than just once a month to type, but I'm not going to count on that happening for a while. There's a few names piling upon my IOU list and I hope they can accept my sincere apologies for not returning their kind gestures of cardboard in a timely manner. I think my cake is almost ready, so I'll end this here before the smoke alarm starts going off. Subject: FOOT / TOE Report "As you may already be aware from the Rambling and Thanks yesterday, Mike Rich, Mike Mroz, Mark Talbot, and myself had a Monday meeting at the FOOT headquarters of Comerica Park. I won't go through all the things we discussed, but one of the topics was Geordie's and Walker's application for membership in TOE & FOOT respectively. We also briefly discussed the criteria for membership in both. I should like to discuss the latter first. As regards membership in FOOT and TOE, I am pleased to announce that we now have Official Rules and Protocol for granting membership. I might add that there was not a single dissenting vote on the issue. In actuality there were no assenting votes either, in fact there wasn't even a vote. However, as the author of the membership criteria, I obviously support it so it passes via forfeiture. Besides, we did discuss at one point baseball's indifference rule regarding base stealing and that's close enough! I simply applied the indifference rule in regard to approval of the protocol for membership. Allow me to review: FOOT members shall meet 6 of the following 8 criterion. 1) Must be either an active or inactive member of OBC. 2) Past or present resident of the great state of Michigan. 3) HOM guy must be a Tiger. 4) Collect Tiger Team sets or a specific Tiger solely on the basis of his being a Tiger. 5) Attended games at Tiger Stadium and rooted for the Tigers. 6) Attend at least one FOOT gathering. **Attending in spirit may be 7) Pledge full time fealty to the Tigers. 8) Ate a Koegel's hot dog. **Some present members may not meet 6 of the above criteria, but were in fact Grandfathered in at the inception of FOOT. For future hopefuls, I regret to inform you that the Grandfathering deadline has expired and you evidently missed it.. The following criterion will govern membership in TOE: 1) Must meet at least 2 of the requirements for FOOT membership. 2) Must apply in writing inclusive of why you are pursuing membership. 3) Must have a sponsoring FOOT member who will validate your veracity. 4) Pledge fealty to and root for the Tigers except when playing applicants favorite team. (* Yankee fans may be ineligible altogether we haven't decided yet.) 5) Effectively bribe or otherwise influence a FOOT member. *This criterion is known as the Grant clause and may preclude any number of requirements as determined by the bribee. OK, drum roll please: *As regards Walker Guthrie's application for FOOT membership, he is here by granted the status of an At Large FOOT. Congratulations Walker, you are encouraged to pursue full membership by providing further documentation of additional membership requirements. *As regards Geordie Calvert's application for TOE membership, he is hereby granted full TOE membership. Congratulations Geordie, your written request really nailed it for you. *As regards Grant Rainsley's application for TOE membership, I would remind him that he was previously granted TOE membership via requirement #5, aka the Grant clause. Congratulations Grant and thanks for approving me as the second member of the official Billy Hoeft Fan Club preceded only by yourself as founder and President. Respectfully Submitted, Earl "EEK" Kilbourn So there it is OBC, in order to be a FOOT you have to have a good understanding. I hope I have provided that. -Limited applications are now being accepted for membership in FOOT: Fraternal Order Of Tiger fans. -Unlimited applications are now being accepted for membership in TOE: Tigers Out-state Enthusiast. Also, for the Tiger haters out there we are forming another group called HEEL who's full name I cannot divulge due to OBC's obscenity policy. You may apply online or via the application in our yet to be created Newsletter, FOOT Prints. Alphabetical FOOT Roster Glenn Codere Earl "EEK" Kilbourn George Moore Mike Mroz Chuck Paris Ron Perry Mike "Motor Mouth" Rich Mark "Snake" Talbot Art Wainwright (Walker Guthrie - ABD) I would ask all present TOEs to step up and be counted so that we may provide a complete roster.
