I picked up a slightly (really) off center Nellie Fox (#525 from '63, in case you had forgotten) and I was dutifly (sp) looking over the back of the card when I noticed that Nellie apparently played in 156 games in 1959. Now, even though I wasn't born until late in the '59 season, Howard, I know that teams only played 154 games then. So, I went to the trusty google-monster, typed in "1959 chicago white sox 156 games" and got that box score web site where I discovered that the Yankess and the Chisox played a 6-inning, 4-4 tie in July where Whitey Ford lasted only an inning and two thirds. Ok, that is 155. Then I found the biggie in August, just a couple weeks before I arrived in DC, the Sox and O's played an 18-inning monster at Memorial stadium and stopped with the score 1-1. It was a 4 hour game, so who knows what time it was... Were there lights in Baltimore in '59? The cool part is that the Sox starter, Peirce, pitched 16 innings before being relieved! In the last 25 years I don't think I've seen a pitcher go 11! I can only think of a couple 10's. So, what is the point? Nothing. I'm down to 2 on my '63 set (thanks to Ken and my wife :) ) and I though this was some fun useless info. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, "Grant" Date: Sun, 05 Aug 2007 10:05:33 -0400 From: "obcjohn@knology.net" Subject: Re: *****SPAM***** [OBC-Ramblings] Hall of Mediocrity- new member- Mickey Stanley Grant - Mike, Mickey is a perfect HOM nominee. This was my First National and boy was it fun but yet overwhelming....OK here is how it started. I got to Cleveland Thursday morning and Met up with Mac Wubben, Ken Morganrti and Bob Reed and we caught the Indians Rangers game We had great seats we were sitting field level close to home plate...got to see the Indians win a fun game. Just after we leave the game the gates of hell opened and the flash flood hit us. It was amazing how much rain we had. Now we go for diner at Longhorns I think its a steak house, and We meet up with Steve Rittenberg,Mike Rich, Big Al Cummings, john Gray Sal Domino and Kent Goto. it was the first time I met Sal, Kent, and Big Al and John Gray. We had a great time at dinner and went to Steve's hotel and took over the lobby and had a mini Swap Session. It was cool. It got late and we all went to hit the sack. I shacked up with Ken the first night. Now it was morning and time to hit my First National. I was getting excited. We went to breakfast as you should start a long long day with a power breakfast. and Off to the show....I walked in and was AMAZED how big it was. God was this a big show. I didn't know where to begin. The first Hour or so was a blur it was so big. After a while I found a few dealers and started buying some stuff. Then I met up with Sal and we were walking around and Saw an OBC hat, and it was Tom HOusley. Very nice to finally meet tom, as he and I always Chat on line sometimes for hours at a pop....after Tom I Met Brock Hattox, then Chris Stufflestreet,Larry Gersback, spike. We all B/Sed for a while and did some shopping..Pretty cool show. OK as far as what I bought on my first day at my first National. I found a bunch of 54 bowman's, a few 58's, and some 57 sp's, then I bought my big card for the day and bought a 53 Topps Satchel Paige. I was very happy. After the show we went to Apple bees for dinner and then another swap session at Steve's place. fun take over of the Lobby again...I love Hamptons in as they have free coffee and cookies all night so it kept us going even later. It was getting late and we went to crash...Tonight I roomed with Kent Goto, who said he snores when he's tired, but He doesn't so he's a good roommate....Ken doesn't snore Either I left his room because I slept on the floor in my sons sleeping bag and My back almost went out.....Kent had a sofa bed so I roomed with him the second night..... Now to the second day....We get in, and As im looking I get a call to go to a certain dealer who has good 50s for low prices...I look through the box and find 53s for $2 each...Steve tells me to pull any # over 220 and I wind up pulling 20 Sp's I need for my 53 Topps for $2 each and Steve takes the other SP's I didn't need.....we destroyed his 53 box and took all the SP and hi #S The dealer commented and Steve shot him down..."well you said $2 and he only need sp's....." very cool Steve thank...Now we start walking AROUND AND see the upper deck booth so I take my free picture and they turn it into a baseball card...awesome all said and done I wound up taking 6 different pictures...had 3 in an Indians uniform 1 in the Mets home uniform and 2 in the mets road...it was cool...Most of the OBCers wound up taking picks as well.that was fun. After the pictures I run into Chris and he tells me about a 61 mantle he saw for $45 so I went and talked the dealer down to $40 and got the card....It was a nice card..... I bought some nice cards The second day, but now it was getting time to go to my first National Swap session and I was getting Here it is Swap Session Time..... I've been to Ft wash Swap Sessions, but this made FT wash look sad....We again Took Over the Hamptons inn lobby and had fun....Cardboard was flying we were going through everyone's boxes....Joe Issac, and Bil Malson met us their as well very cool to meet these guys. Got it was fun meeting everyone Playing Card wars and everything......It was a great time......Mike Rick Had the find of the day He got a 54 bowman mantle for $20 and I needed it for my Set as its my closest to being complete.... so I bought it from him....I love that card...... We had our swap session for a few hours and I had to leave for NY at 10:30....so I was sad to go. I want to Thank Everyone who gave me hits, I don't want to single anyone out, because Well I cant......I wrote down who gave me what and lost the sheet..... But I know in the few days I got over 200 hits to my sets from OBCers......so THANK YOU TO ALL my OBC buddies I had the time of my life thank you It was my First National and I don't know if it can ever be topped. I arrived in Cleveland late Monday afternoon. For anyone who has not tried it, I recommend audio books for long drives. Boy, the six hour drive went by much quicker than it would had I been searching for radio stations. I got to the hotel I stayed at with St. Al Cummings without a problem. We chatted a bit and then had dinner and a quiet nite of unpacking and chatting. I needed to arrive at the show location, I-X Center, at 8am Tuesday to help OBC-friendly dealer Kevin Savage with setting up in exchange for a dealer badge. I think set up was done by 10 or so I was freeeeeee to roam the floor and hunt down goodies. A week has passed so I've forgotten every purchase I made but I'll remember the big ones on Tuesday: Two Horrors of War cards from a dealer with an "OBC Friendly Dealer" sign (courtesy of TJ) and a stack of Redman that I turned over to Ken. I repeatedly forgot to ask for the cards to check all the red man lists of everyone I can remember working on the set. Tuesday night I went to a ball game with Sal, Ken and Al. It was a mostly dull game and I don't think I paid attention during the scoring plays. I had to get up early again on Wednesday to be at the show at 8. I found a few good deals from Roger Neufeldt though nothing comes to mind at the moment. Ken popped in later so we walked around together for a bit. I took him to the tables of OBC-friendly dealers I had already found: Roger, Kevin Savage, J.D Heckathorn + Dick Zimmerman among others. Late Wednesday was "sneak preview night". Mike Rich, Bob Reed (and his son Connor) and Mac Wubben came in, along with Sal Domino, Kent Goto, Gersh and probably others that I've forgotten by now. We walked the floors until closing at 9pm and agreed to meet up for dinner at the Red Robin, a hamburger joint. A couple guys got lost. Others skipped dinner but the remainder (including me) had a nice time. Unfortunately, I was too tired to do anything else so I went back to the hotel and slept. Thursday, the show officially began. In addition to the guys already mentioned, I saw Tom Housley, and Peter Mead. Peter found a great table for us to go through where I did some major damage to my football sets. Thursday dinner at Lone Star Steakhouse. After I went to the airport to get Spike Glidden, I invited everyone back to our hotel (Hampton Inn) for a small swap. Plus, we organized a group search to help St. Al with his 1954 Topps set, which we finished by about noon. On Friday, more of the same. Now Rob Gioia joined us along with John Scott Gray and Chris Stufflestreet. I met Brock Hattox as well, an unexpected surprise. Some had talked about a minor league game on Friday night but we were all too tired by the end of the show and had dinner and a swap instead. Saturday -- same thing. OBC friendly dealer Randy Kniffin showed a box of 59-62 cards to Kent, Sal and me. We said "sold" without looking at it, as I trust Randy if he tells me its a good deal. He had some other things that I didn't need but I think I called Ken over and had him look at. And Randy had a large pile of odds and ends with a bunch of stars in it. We couldn't figure out how to split it up so we each took the portion we wanted. Everyone benefited, including Randy since he'll probably sell the remainder and receive more than if we had been able to buy the whole deal. At this point, I noticed something great -- everyone (except JSG) had cell phones. So whenever I saw a deal, I called someone else to see if they wanted me to pick it up for them or wanted to see it themselves. I really liked that buddy system and I hope we use more of it in the future. I always appreciate when someone looks out for me. Saturday night was our BIG swap. Bill Malson and Joe Isaac came up just for the swap. Mark Talbot came for swap and stayed overnight. Mark, as usual, continues to look out for cards I need and finished a Flag Midgees set plus gave me an exhibit and a 65 FB Tallboy. I don't think I fully appreciated all the "looking out for me" that Mark has been doing the past couple of years until this year at the National. I unloaded lots of things that I should have been mailed a while ago plus I got rid of a few Standard Catalogs and even a Baseball Encyclopedia. Someday I may even have a reasonably neat house if this keeps up. By Sunday, everyone was bone tired. Early in the morning I picked up about 12 of the last 15 cards Al needed for his 1969 Topps set and I asked the group to help finish it for him. I think Ken found a Fingers RC, which was the last one we needed. The day passed quickly but the ending was drawn out. After I helped Kevin Savage load his van, I waited with Al and Ken at OBC friendly dealer Greg Fisher while Greg got his van. Vans could not enter the building until 5pm but it took quite a while before Greg came over with his. Ken and I helped Greg load up and we were finally done. Al and I headed to dinner while Ken headed off to sleep. This morning I packed up and made the long trip home. The end. ================= Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2007 02:05:52 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "kevin71058" Subject: Shea Stadium Game/Outting Sept 9th (Sunday) Hi all, Please let me know if you want tickets (Luxury box) for the Sept 9th game (Sunday) So far we have.. This year, I only got to the show on Friday, and spent most of my time, for some reason, buying football cards (I am from Canton, after all), making significant dents on a couple of lists. I also slapped a little leather to add one T206 to my Tribe set. It seemed to me that the percentage of "vintage" cards and items was a lot higher than in previous years, but maybe the number of vendors was a little less. On Saturday evening, though, I did make it to the swap session. It was a chance to see old OBC acquaintances, and to meet others for the first time - including Ray Luurs, John Scott Grey, Rob Gioia (sporting a spiffy game-worn Mets jersey), Mac Wubben, and (much to my surprise) Ed Schott. I won't try to thank everyone who provided cards, because I pretty much lost track - but I have to recognize my OBC-neighbor Joe Isaac, who let me pilfer from his dupes box to the point where I started to get embarassed about it and quit. (Off-topic note to Father Pat down in New Orleans - your Saints 2nd round draft pick, Andy Alleman, is a local kid and played baseball in our Little League program. I never coached Andy but I knew him well, a very nice kid. Good thing he grew big, cause he was never going to make it on the baseball field.) ================= Date: Wed, 08 Aug 2007 04:01:24 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: My National report Ah, the 2007 Cleveland National. Here's a rundown on my days there: Left home Thursday morning about 10:30, drove straight to Cleveland & walked into the show at 2:10 pm it (don't get me started on the freakin' 8 bucks for parking.Ugh.). I roamed around, looked for OBC hats, picked up some goodies, ran into Al Cummings & Steve Rittenberg. I didn't see any other OBC'ers, but given the size of the I-X center that's kind of understandable. Wow is that place HUGE! I don't remember it being that big last time the National was in Cleveland - but then again I spent parts of three days there this year, so more time to explore the floor. My 2nd stop was the Helmar table, where I discovered a brand-new second series of cards & got to talk to the Helmar CEO; the cards came off the presses only 4 days earlier. Only 36 cards in the 2nd series, & at a buck each I held off. (I ended up stopping there on Friday, giving in & buying a set.)I got the last bottle cap I needed, and the last two labels - still attached to the still-full beer bottles. More solo roaming followed, as I attempted to hit as many of the OBC-friendly tables as I could, & I managed to make a dent in some high numbers at Henderson's table, among other stops. On Friday I finally got to put a face with the name of my IM buddy when I ran across Rob Gioia almost as soon as I walked in, and also met Mac Wubben. Throughout the day I saw many more OBC'ers including Spike, Ken Morganti, Kent Goto, Ray Luurs, DR. JSGtY, Gersh, Bob Reed & Mike Rich. Picked up a bunch of goodies from Sims, to go along with some 1954 Bowman for $1.50 at Henderson's table, and made a stop at Kurt Tourdot's table, where I picked off more 1950's cards. Rob & I roamed around for the rest of the show, ran into inactive OBC'er Brian Lindholme, walked around more, bought stuff here & there, and admired all of the goodies on display. On Saturday I met Ed Schott, who played the "guess who I am game" with me; I did poorly until he mentioned Baltimore. With Ed, Rob, & Mac, I added 3 more OBC'ers to the list of members I've met. Later on we ran into Chris Stufflestreet & his wife, & Sal Domino. Rob showed me his freebie personal Upper Deck card (well, one of 5 he'd already had taken!), & we got in line for more pictures. I suspect Rob wouldn't have gone back so often if it wasn't for the cute photographer's assistant, but she made standing in line very worthwhile! (nudge nudge wink wink, say no more.) We tried to persuade Kent to get a personal card made, but he must be wanted by the cops someplace; he wouldn't get in front of the camera. Spike & Mac posed together as "The OBC Twins" on one card. Friday night I went to meet my wife & daughter at my in-laws house & we all went out to dinner & I went to bed early - all that walking & standing on concrete floors took its' toll. Card-wise on Saturday, I picked up a pretty nice 1964 Pete Rose from dealer Kurt Tourdot for only 35 bucks, so that was the big purchase of the show for me; I also got a bunch of 1963 mid-high numbers. Over the three days I was there I managed to knock off about 15 mid-series 1957 Topps, about 15 1955 Bowman, and the previously-mentioned 63's . Those three sets were my main targets at the show, so I was pretty happy - although slightly envious when Gersh showed us his pile of 2 buck Redman cards, & when we heard about a guy selling 52 & 53 high numbers for 2 bucks each but by then I was out of money! I also managed to kill my 1974 Topps FB base set & my 1971 Topps scratch-offs, picked up a tough 1967 back variation & discovered a few more 1973 Topps FB variations, & thanks to the swap session (primarily Steve's dupes box) managed to start the 1961 Nu Card Scoop set & the 1935 Goudey 4-in-1's. Kent also handed me my very first 1951 Topps Red Backs. (More specific thanks will be forthcoming on the Thanks server.) At the close of the show on Saturday I headed over to the swap but thanks to the geniuses of ODOT closing the westbound ramp onto I-480, I had to double back, head east on the highway & find an exit & turn around in order to get to the hotel. Hey ODOT - when you put up a sign telling drivers to follow another route, TELL US WHERE THAT FREAKIN' ROUTE IS! I'm not from Cleveland, I don't know where 252 is. Jeez. Anyway, back to the swap, pizza was consumed, Bill Malson & Joe Isaac joined us & so did Mark Talbot, carboard flew, dupes boxes were raided, Bob Reed's son won a majority of the UV pack wars we had, some of us saw Fathead Cheaterman, er Barroid Bonds, hit #755 on TV before things wrapped up. Kurt Tourdot & his partner (I don't know his name) came by & visited the madness for a while too. All together another great National, even with the confusing highway ramp closures near the I-X Center (did I mention the eastbound exit to the airport was closed Friday morning?? Crap, I had to find my way to the place on Friday, and hunt for a way out on Saturday!). It was great seeing familiar faces & even better meeting guys I hadn't met before. It's like having a huge group of brothers who look out for each other & THAT'S the best part of the National for me. Looking forward to Chicago next year! ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Wed, 08 Aug 2007 08:02:25 +0000 From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: My Day at the National Hello All, The 2007 National Convention in Cleveland would be the second National I would be able to attend having been to the Chicago show a few years ago. It was just as big if not bigger but there were not as many people in attendance on the Sunday that I attended the show compared to Chicago a few years ago. This made it easier for me to make it through the show and check out the tables I wanted to hit. Mike Rich and I arrived about 10 am after a nice breakfast and I waited in the lobby for a dealer badge from Steve Rittenberg. When we walked in we hit the very first table and I completed my first set at the show with a single from the `79 Fleer Football set for a buck (Mike had scoped out the table earlier in the week and knew they had the cards). We met up with Steve at Kevin Savage’s table where I flipped Steve a ten spot for the entry badge and returned it to him then I began shopping. Kevin hosted the swap so I always pick stuff up at his table; I walked away with some `53 Topps HI numbers, `54 Bowman variations, Post Cereal cards, Stop & Shop Football and a `52 Topps mini. After shopping with Kevin Savage I ran into Ken Morganti and Al Cummings at Greg Fisher's Cameo Cards and I began my search for a `62 Topps Bob Uecker RC. Greg didn’t have one so I went on the prowl, J.D. Heckathorn didn’t have one and I didn’t see anything of interest so I moved on. I came across Dick Zimmerman’s table, we had a nice chat and I met his lovely wife and I found some things I could use and walked away with some Exhibits and some `53 Bowman Color cards for the old collection and I continued to walk the isles. I would next run into Mac Wubben at a table where we chatted for a while and I continued to walk around looking for the elusive Uecker card. I ended up a Chandy’s table where Ed Schott was seated pulling goodies from the pile of 50 cent items. I promptly called him Bob and we laughed at my inability to distinguish him from Bob Reed. I hung out with Ed for about an hour pulling various Tiger items, Exhibit reprints, Hostess panels and other “odd-ball” issues and had a blast doing it. I spent a little time chatting with Chandy as I have picked up items off the Internet from him in the past and had never met him. It was on to meet Steve for lunch. I arrived at the food court area where Steve was making PB&J sandwiches; I opted for a hot dog and Pepsi and sat with Steve, Al and Ken. We talked a bit and Steve pulled out a `59 Topps Mantle AS card that I picked up from him for $35, a great deal in my opinion. After lunch I hit the isles again and found my way to Kurt Tourdot’s table. I was later joined by Ed Schott and Ray Luurs and eventually found a short stack of `72 Topps Football HI numbers and a few `53 Bowman Color cards. I got a call from Mike Rich to return to Chandy’s table where Steve had found some more `72 Topps Football HI numbers for me at $3 a piece and I picked up (6) more. I left the area to continue the hunt for the `62 Topps set killer and came across a number of interesting tables but no Uecker card. I would pick up my big show purchase from a dealer I have forgotten and was happy to get a `53 Bowman Color Mantle-Berra-Rizzutto card for $100 and knock that one off the list. I swung by the Helmar Beer booth but the President was walking around, I would stop by a few more times but never got a chance to meet him. I couldn’t bring myself to buy the `07 Helmar set either; I just felt a buck a card was too much for this 36 card set. I still may pick one up but I didn’t at the National. I continued to meander around looking for the elusive Uecker card that was nowhere to be found, I hit Roger Neufeldts and a few other tables. Then I got a call to join Mike Rich at the Upper Deck booth and get a Personal Trading Card made so I joined him and got a very cool card made of myself. By now many of the dealers were packing up and getting ready to go so I started walking again and ended up at Sims table where I found some of the elusive `56 Topps Baseball back variation cards that I’ve been working on for some time now. This took me to 5 pm when the lights were dimmed and the show was officially closed to the public. I met up with Mike, Al, Ken and Ray at Greg’s table and we talked about going out to dinner. Well we waited about a half hour and Steve had not returned from helping Kevin and Ray had to get to the airport so Mike and I decided to hit the road to get the most out of the daylight hours remaining. We dropped Ray off at the airport and Mike dropped me off at the Hampton to pick up my car and we played “cat & mouse” back to Southeastern Michigan. We stopped for some dinner outside of Monroe where Mike handed over my final show purchase a group of `52 -`54 Redman’s including Williams, Snider, Reese, Spahn and others that he had remaining from a much larger deal he split with Ken Morganti. After dinner we continued home – I arrive about 9:30 or so. It was a very successful show for me even though the `62 Topps set still remains unfinished. The highlight of course was spending time with so many OBC buddies, helping one another out and just chillin`. I am hoping to plan a family vacation to Chicago and spend more time next year at the National. Hope to see more of you there as also – BE WELL!!!! Hello All, I arrived at 7 pm at the Hampton Inn and started meeting and greeting the OBC brethren and I knew immediately that my 3 hour drive to Cleveland was well worth it. I shook hands for the first time with Bill Malson, Mac Wubben, Connor Reed (Bob’s Son) and Ed Schott (who I managed to call Bob for the rest of the evening confusing him with Connor’s Dad). After greeting all in the room and handing out a specially prepared package to each, I grabbed a piece of pizza and the cardboard started flying. John Scott Gray handed me an envelope with a SCP from the `50 Bowman set, none other than Tiger Vic Wertz. Wertz settled in the Detroit area after baseball and ran a beer distributing company and was known for his charitable work in the area. Thanks JSG!!! Tom Housley handed me a small envelope that contained two of the `74 Parker Brothers Football variation cards that he got me started on in the first place. Gene Washington and Essex Johnson are now crossed off the list that now only has 15 cards remaining. Thanks for thinking of me Tom. Steve Rittenberg handed me a couple of W-517 reprints that were given to him by Howard Morgan to hand out. Cool images of Lou Gehrig and Paul Waner among them. Thanks Howard (and Steve). I met Connor Reed and we talked about his collection a bit as he was getting ready to collate a starter set of Donruss Champions courtesy of Mike Rich who had brought a large box for anyone who wanted a starter set. While he was at it Connor put a starter set of 36 cards together for me which will be added to my UV list thanks to Mike and Connor. Spike Glidden handed me a couple of unusual items as he knows I enjoy “oddball” items. Added to the collection was an IAM Sugar packet of Babe Ruth and a type card from the `76 Funky Facts set that I have never seen before. Cool stuff Matt!! Chris Stufflestreet brought a small box of dupes that I pulled a SCP for my Tiger collection – a `57 Topps card of utility man Bob Kennedy. Nice to see you and your family again Chris. Steve Rittenberg handed me a grouping of baseball hits featuring a Don Wingfield postcard of my HOM’er Stormin` Norman Cash. Steve also included three Bazooka All-Time Greats with John McGraw, Dazzy Vance and Judge Landis. Steve was not done with me yet though as you will read later. Mac Wubben stopped by and floored me with a SCP from the `53 Bowman B&W set, Cleveland Indian flamethrower Bob Lemon is now a part of the collection. This card came from a special OBC box at Kevin Savage’s table as I was able to pull some OBC gems from it on Sunday that had the same “Mr.” written on the back in front of the player’s name. Great find Mac, thanks for sharing it with me. I swiped a couple of `74 Fleer Baseball First’s cards from the box that Kent Goto brought along. These cards should not be so hard to find but they are so I’m fortunate that Kent brought them along – Thanks Kent. Steve Rittenberg wandered over and asked me if I had started collecting the `77-78 OPC WHA Hockey set, I told him I had but only had a few. He said “your now finished” and handed me a small folder that contained the entire set with Gordie, Mark & Marty Howe, Bobby Hull, Frank Mahovlich and so many others, but as you will read Steve was not done yet. Ken Morganti got into the action by offering a difficult `63 Post card of Billy Williams for $5 and later flipped me a nicely trimmed `56 Topps Willie Mays gray back variation. Ken is always so generous it’s hard to keep up with him, thanks so much buddy. I got into a nice conversation with Ray Luurs who allowed me to look through the box he brought and I grabbed a `55 Bowman upgrade of Hector “Skinny” Brown and a `53 Mother’s Cookies card of Pete Milne. I also a starter set of (9) `89 Master Bread cards with Tiger Alan Trammell. Thanks Ray, nice to catch up with you. By now I managed to get a “comfy” chair near the television near where Larry Gersbach was sitting. Larry came up from the Cincinnati area with a box of cards to go through and I snagged a `66 Topps Dick Tracewski and a `67 Topps Hank Aguirre. Thanks a lot Larry and great to see you. By now Steve Rittenberg saw me relaxing and he just had to get me busy, so he hands me a 3200 count box of Non-Sport stuff that would consume the remainder of my evening. By the end of it all I would pull cards for Indian Life in the 60’s, Cowboys, Lighthouses, Artic Scene’s, Heroes of History, Sights and Scenes of the World, Types of Nations, `56 Topps U.S. Presidents, `53 Bowman Presidents, `56 Topps Wings, `56 Topps World on Wheels and `56 Topps Davy Crockett. Hundreds of hits in all and then Steve has me look through some Basketball and I turn up (3) `71 Topps Trio’s for my collection. Before I’m done Steve asks me if I collect the `56 Gum Products Adventure set, I tell him I’m not and he throws me a starter stack of (48) of them. Steve says “this should get us close to even” – I would say so and then some Steve. I am floored by the wonderful things you bring each year to the swap and I feel fortunate that you allowed me to go hog-wild in a cardboard feeding frenzy. I will be working all year to even us up my friend, thanks so much. Finally, just hanging around with Sal Domino, “Saint” Al Cummings, Bob Reed, Rob Gioia and Joe Isaac was a blast. There’s not nearly enough time in the 4 or 5 hours we spent together to get caught up but it was great to see you all and I hope you will all make it to Chicago next year. As is my usual custom at the swap meet I was among the last to leave and Mike Rich and I split the cost of a motel room about 4 miles away and spent another hour or so looking at cardboard and I got the low-down on the show. Before hitting the sack for the evening Mike slipped me a couple Nu-Card Hi-Lites blank back cards and added 14 more cards to my list as I was unaware of the variation and now with two of them I’m collecting them. Thanks I think Mike. In my next “ramble” I will detail my day at the National – BE WELL!!! I'll talk to some people shortly about specific ideas I have so that everything goes as smoothly as possible next year. If you have ideas beyond these below, let me know. 1) A single reference sheet with OBC member info and OBC friendly dealer tables and numbers. 2) Some sort of OBC-friendly dealer sign that we can suggest/sell to dealers, similar to the one we saw at the National. 3) A short page with each of our priorities at the National to help us look out for each other, perhaps on the back of the reference sheet. 4) Finding someone at the show with internet access so we can access lists and email at the show. This is a stretch since dealers have to contract in advance for it and internet connectivity is always a mystery inside a large building. ================= Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2007 07:07:26 -0700 (PDT) To: obc ramblings From: Matthew Subject: Spike's National 2007 report Hi all, What an excellent weekend in Cleveland! Of my four Nationals, three have been at the I-X Center, with this year's setting the high-water mark. So manyof the thanks go for help and friendliness from other OBCers, even more sothan cards themselves. It started with Steve Rittenberg grabbing me from the airport Thursday night. We zipped back to the Lone Star steakhouse, where a full table of OBC bent corners lingered over the last couple of ribs. Everyone shook hands and related some Wednesday and Thursday show stories. Good news, I heard, lots of vintage dealers around. After a "starter swap" Thursday night, packed it in with Mike Rich at the nearby Homestead Suites. Watched the Braves lose a game where they had 22 hits (12-11 in 14 innings) and Brian Moehler picked up the save for the Astros. Went right to sleep afterwards--if Mike does snore, my ear plugs and I wouldn't know it. Friday started with an early show arrival and greetings to our OBC-friendlydealers. Kevin Savage does about all a dealer can do, letting us drop stuff at his table, sponsoring the pizza feed, and generally being a nice guy. Thanks again to Steve for passing along the dealer badge (from Greg of Cameo Cards) that gained my early admittance. Also touched base with Kurt Turdot and made a fairly big bargain box purchase, including a 34G Lefty Grove. Met and shook hands with the Sims Classic Sports guys, who host a great table of discount cards. After picking up several cards from the 52T box, theygave me a long-sought #5, the 1967 Coke All-Star cap of Rusty Staub. (OK, they asked 50 cents originally, but how often do dealers actually give stuff Speaking of #5s, found a few others to keep Staub company: - 1975 SSPC Superstars, Jim Palmer - 1979 TCMA Buffalo Bisons, Tony Pena (thanks, Steve) - 1969 Transograms box, Jose Cardenal On that last purchase, I paid the only official tax of the whole show. The card (box label, actually) cost $1.50 and the lady totaled it with 10 centstax. Seriously! You meet every kind of dealer at the National. Our shuttle driver said the I-X Center served as a hanger for B-52 construction during WWII. It's HUGE, with 25 rows in longitude and another 10 in latitude. The OBC-friendly dealer page really helped. 90% of my buys came from dealers on the list and I spent almost no time hunting for a dealer I couldn't find, even in that much space. The Upper Deck booth proved a highlight of the show. Stand in line for a few minutes, get your picture taken, and get it on a card immediately, any pose and name. Our own Rob T. Fireman missed out on the OBC cards last time around--he seemed in much better spirits after five (six?) trips through theline. My own three cards pay tribute to a couple of vintage poses, one with the help of Mac. We agreed to scan and post the results, which can go here: http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/OBC-Ramblings/photos Friday blew through my initial budget pretty quickly. I switched to $1 box cards by mid-afternoon, with finds like a 1967 Venezuelan Claude Osteen, a trimmed 34 Diamond Star high number, and two hits to my new 1977 TCMA set (Williams and Dimaggio). Also picked up a 1956 Topps Williams #5 for $20 from a bargain box. We bagged on the minor league game Friday night, opting for another mini-swap after some dinner at Chili's. Gersh arrived to share my hotel room, as Mike Rich moved on to a friend's place. Another solid night of sleep, something my cats don't often allow back in Boston. Saturday started faster than expected. Mac called from a table (Gizmo's Sportscards) that had copious boxes of 52 and 53 cards after making his own sizable purchase. The only real flaw for most cards were hand-written stats on the back. Never started the 53 Bowmans before and this dealer offered up the whole box of almost 175 for $2.50 each, including high numbers and minor stars. Sold! Wantlists for both color and black-and-white to come shortly. This wiped out most of my cash for the day, so I fell back to cheap boxes and show "features" like the company booths and Helmar table. Something about restaurants and hotels in the area--they know service! Other than some slow breakfast delivery at Denny's one morning, we got nothing but helpful people. The Hampton Inn went about five extra miles by putting out a great breakfast each day. I (*cough*) took advantage twice. They evenlet us swap in the lobby Saturday night without complaint and cooked up fresh cookies a few times during the night. Did I mention only two OBCers were staying there? I'll surely stay there next time around to restock the karma Saturday's swap always crams a lot of baseball energy into a small space. We worked through several pizzas (thanks to Kevin Savage and Kurt Turdot), watched Bonds hit #755, and engaged in one-card-up-man-ship throughout. People passed along hits to my 1952 list, player collections, and new 1953 Bowmans. Ray Luurs even gave me a 1952 high number of Warren Hacker--whatta guy! Steve finished my "big Donruss" UV list with a 1987 All-Stars Brett card.Several other cards came from Steve during this and earlier swaps, something not to be forgotten. He also kept in cell phone contact throughout the show, so gets credit for several buys. I echo his sentiment to circulate thecontact list at future shows. Mr. Luurs made my third roommate in three nights, with Gersh headed home right after the swap. Long days make for easy sleep, so we gave in quickly. Ray apologized for accidentally head-butting the poorly-placed TV screen during the night. Guess I slept through it! My plane left early Sunday--but not so early I couldn't see more of the show! Steve and I shuttled over at 8am and I bade farewell to some of our dealers, picking up a last few cards at Sims along the way. Big thanks to all the OBCers met and swapped with: St. Al Ed Schott Mark Talbot Steve Rittenberg Mac Wubben Rob Gioia Ray Luurs Mike Rich Brian Dwyer Chris Stufflestreet Sal Domino Ken Morganti Kent Goto Tom Housley Bill Malson Joe Isaac Bob Reed Hope I got everyone! My cards sit nicely stacked and organized at the moment. The longer they stay out, the easier it is to remember the show, right? Sick sense of humor? Visit Yahoo! ================= Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2007 13:01:04 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, vct@lists.vintagecardtraders.com From: friar4@aol.com Subject: Trade bait Recent purchases on ebay leave me with quite a few dupes. The Series 2 Helmars are about the same thickness as Series 1, but they were cut down differently resulting in less "chipping" on the backs. Same dimensions as Series 1. Helmar had two different sized "Silk" issues on display at the National. The small silk is about the size of an S-74, the large is similar to S-81. The larger silks have much better clarity than the small silks and are impressive to look at. They were produced in Europe (Belgium as I recall) and are quite expensive. **************************************

A little more info on the Helmar items that I neglected to share in my last post. Sorry I forgot to add this in my post before the National, my facilities have not been fully functional for a while now and one could argue that they never really have functioned correctly. ;) Charles called me on the Monday before the National to see if I was able to attend the show with himself and Monty Sheldon, unfortunately it wasn't feasible with everything that was/is going on around home as of late. He shared the information on the cards and silks and was to send scans of a few upon his return from the show. I don't have any pics of the silks yet but I did see some of the mock-ups of these last year, they looked fantastic. Another Helmar collector, not in the group, sent me a photo of the entire set the other day and I have posted it to the Yahoo server, http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/OBC-Ramblings/photos/view/7d27?b=1. This was taken during the National and shows all 36 cards. As for the silks, there are 20 small silks and 14 large silks that are/were being offered as a set. Most of the images on the silks are also found on the cards but not all of them, although I don't have the specifics in front of me right now. Only 40 of the small silk sets and 20 of the large silk sets were made but Charles said that number may double. Not sure if the print run numbers are public information so please keep that within the group. The silks are a lot more expensive than the cards, I'd guess around $5 each for the small and pushing $25 for each large, just a guess though. I neglected to write down the exact sizes but the small silks are a bit larger than the Helmar cards themselves and the large ones were huge, if I remember correctly they measured larger than a sheet of paper, maybe 14 inches.I just can't remember for sure. As soon as mine arrive, I will also post scans of the silks on the Yahoo These items are the first sports related anything I've picked up in over 8 months, maybe it will help get me back in the collecting mood again. I have many thank-you's to post on the other server. I arrived at the I-X center around noon on Friday. Mike Rich met me at the door to give me a dealer pass to enter the show. I went to see Wayne Johnson & J D Heckathorn first. They are OBC friendly dealers who had a list of some of the items I was looking for. Unforunately they were not able to provide me with much of what I was looking for. However just around the corner from their booths was a dealer with a stack of 1955 Redman cards for about two bucks a piece. I got 13 cards for $30, almost all stars, Spahn, Kiner, Rizzuto,Mize,Klu,Kell,Stengel,Wilhelm to name a few. I had learned years ago, the best way to go thru a National is to look for the blue & white OBC hats. Rittenberg, Mac, Spike, Sal, Kent, Housley, Newcomb,Stuffle,Morganti,Rich, JSG & Reed were all there & had already scoped out some of the best tables to look for. It saves a lot of time not having to waste energy perusing tables that really don't offer much in the way of OBC material. I had the pleasure of meeting Rob Gioia, Brian Dwyer, and Brock Hattox that afternoon. Rob was truly like a kid in the candy store. What a great time it was to walk around the show with him. Many of the the OBCer's greeted me with an envelope full of cards. We stayed until the show closed at 6 PM. I loaded up my vehicle with a few of the guys & headed off to dinner. That was followed by an informal swap session at Big Al's hotel. Spike was kind enough to let me use the hide-a-bed in his room for the nite. Apparently neither of us snored. Up early the next AM. We loaded six of us into my car, Ritt, Luurs, Morganti, Mac & Spike, who volunteered to act as the contortionist by squeezing into the hatchback. We had a Denny's grand slam breakfast & were off the the show for it's openning. The best deal of the day was Gizmo's cards. This guy had boxes of 1952 & 53 Bowman & Topps cards for a little over two bucks a card. The only flaw on almost all the cards was some kid's initials written on the back corner, (MR). You gotta love that kid, who would be about my age today for making all those OBC cards 55 years ago. (Could it have been our own Mike Rich?) I think every OBCer made his way to the Gizmo table at some point during the day. I picked up 60 52-Topps & 53-Bowman B&W's for $125. I hit many other tables, picking up Leafs, Fleers, & many early 1950 thru 1952 Bowman cards. Another hi-lite for me on Saturday was the Rittenberg quest to finish off my 1972 Topps set. I came to the show needing only four cards. Steve hands me the Bobby Murcer IA card on Friday at the swap. He made it his personal mission to acquire the other three cards for me on Saturday. Steve Carlton , Traded card came next, Then the Steve Garvey card showed up. Finally the odd last card, Vic Davalillo. Much appreciation Steve for his persistent kindness. Steve also allowed me to rifle thru his dealer scum box & purchase at very low prices 54T's Ted Williams #250 & Ernie Banks RC. Another surprise was Ed Schott showing up at the show. Meeting him gets me up to 49-OBCers that I have had the pleasure of meeting. Once again we closed down the show at 6 PM & headed over to Big Al's Hotel for the big swap session & pizza party. Joe Isaac, Bill Malson & Mark Talbot also were able to come the the swap. As always much fun, BS & cards ensued. I had to leave about 10 PM because I had a flight to Frisco early the next AM. I took lots of photos at the swap. If I can figure out how to do it, I'll load them on the server for all to enjoy. Hope to see everyone in Chicago next year!! ================= To: "vct" , Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 23:13:36 -0400 From: "ant" Subject: 1960 fleer fb push Hello All, I am in need of the following: 1960 fleer #9,13,27,47,57,66(cannon),67,79,100,128(maguire) I have the following dupes: 1960 fleer all miscut..alittle shorter but just nice corners .#89,93,94,96,102,106,108, also not miscut #1(white) vg & 73 (haynes)exmt o/c Anthony Arbeeny ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2007 17:04:38 +0000 From: david.skoglund@att.net Subject: Re: Possible Dealer Scum email Of course, when I went to find the Gehrig card it wasn't where it was supposed to be. Somebody who can BUNT!' " After re-reading the article below, I found it is very possible, and very easy, to laugh hard and cry hard at the same time. Scooter at the Mike by Frank Cammuso and Hart Seely The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day; The score stood four to two, with but one inning left to play; Hey Murcer! Who's got play-by-play? No? Really? *I do*? Those last two outs I been sitting here, thinking it was you. A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest Clung to the hope which springs eternal in the human breast. Time out. A fan running out on the field. You hate to see that. They'd put up even money now, with Casey at the bat. But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake. Seeing that fan just reminded me of something, Seaver. I think I got time to get this story in. Joe Altobelli and Johnny Antonelli, who live in Rochester, They got an Italian Open up there every year. Hey look, Telly Savalas! Almost missed him in that hat. For there seemed but little chance of Casey's getting to the bat. But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all. It's a tournament to benefit of the Boys and Girls towns of Italy. And I mean, that whole town is loaded with Italians. So I -- lined to left, *I think that's gonna fall!* And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball! You know, Seaver, I saw Ted Williams the other day. And somebody made this remark, and I'm not saying it Because I agree with him wholeheartedly. But he said, "Pitchers are the dumbest ballplayers, 'Cause all they know how to do is pitch." So I'm asking you, what did you think of that statement? I'm asking you a simple question, Seaver. Tom Seaver here is not answering me. Not a word. There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third. Then from the gladdened multitude went up a joyous yell Anyway, what was I saying when we got those hits? Rochester! Gotta keep talking about Rochester. Gotta keep this rally going, Seaver. So, you know, one thing about Rochester They'll ticket your car if you're gone for a minute. I tell ya. They got the highway patrols out. And look who's up. Holy cow, how do you like that! For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat. There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place. Hey, Murcer, know what's on tonight after the game? Pro wrestling! I mean, it's a great sport. I used to know all the old time wrestlers. A lot of people, you know, they think it's all fixed. I just don't know about that. No stranger in the crowd could doubt 'twas Casey at the bat. Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt. Small crowd tonight, Seaver, considering it's a pennant race. I tell ya. Anyway, back in Rochester. All those Italian names in that golf tournament. Every once in a while, an Irish, a Ryan or something Would get in there, just kind of break up the melody. There was like 200 Italians and about six Irishmen. And who do you think won? The Irishmen won. And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air. Hey, you wanna see somebody butcher a cheesecake! You should see Murcer and Seaver up here. That's a ball, outside. You'd think they're never fed. "That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said. *Strike?* I don't believe it, I'm gonna have to take my pill. Crowd really getting on home plate umpire Durwood Merrill. Let's see that on replay. Look at that! I just don't understand ... And it's likely they'd have killed him had not Casey raised his hand. With a smile of Christian charity great Casey's visage shone; Hey Murcer, you ever play chess? A lot of money in that chess, you know. I tell ya. A lot of money. But it's not a good game for television. I'm not knocking it, but it's not a spectator sport. Breaking ball. High and inside. Oooooh. But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, "strike two." "Fraud!" cried the maddened thousands, and the echo answered "Fraud." Hey Murcer! Look! *Bea Arthur!* Didn't she play Maude? Anyway. Back to Rochester. Gotta get these two runs in. And they knew that Casey wouldn't let that ball go by again. The sneer is gone from Casey's lips, his teeth are clenched in hate. You know, Murcer, I had in Rochester the best meal I ever ate. And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go. Oh! That's gone! *Holy cow! Ohhh ...* Oh! somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright. Wait a minute. What happened? I lost it in the light. Happy Birthday, Gene Paluzzi, who I hear has got the gout ... But there is no joy in Mudville -- mighty Casey has struck out. JSG kept us apprised of his progress in hitting an incredible number of sets. He was telling us at the swap that he had hit in the neighborhood of 121 sets already. That beat me, as I believe I got cards I did not have from "only" 115 vintage sets. 20 of these were my first cards in a set, so for those that thought I was already collecting everything, that is 20 more sets I could work on. 12 were type cards and 8 I got more than 1. 2 sets received upgrades only, 5 sets only the variations lists were hit and 7 sets were completed. The 7 were, 1971 OPC BB (this was a swap received during the National), 1961 Fleer Pennant Stickers (from OBC want to be friendly dealers A - Z Cards & Comics that TJ had told them so much about OBC, they had a big OBC Friendly sign that attracted manyof us over to their booth), 1973 Donruss Super Freaks 2nd Series from Dick Zimmerman, 1980 Fleer FB, both my 1954 & 1955 Red Man base sets to complete a base set run for all 4 years and my 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle to put that base set to bed! There were 4 sets that I only had type cards on, that I got my 2nd (or more) hits to, so those are now also being worked on. 4 sets that were already on my "need 5 or less" list got hits (not that impressive when you think that I had 74 sets that needed 5 or less before the show), 3 more sets moved to the 5 or under list, including 1950 Bowman BB and 4 sets that were less than 1/2 way done, are now at least 1/2 way done. I got some major hits to the 1939 & 1940 Playball high numbers and am over 1/2 way on 1939 (only need 80 of 161) but still need over 1/2 of 1940 (need 121 of 240). Got some key cards. Obviously the 53 Topps Mantle counts. Got a 1933 Goudey #92 Gehrig, 1941 Playball & Double Play Williams, the key cards to the 1948 Leaf FB high numbers, Bednarik & Jenson, my first Wilson Franks of Feller, 1958 Hires Mays, 1963 Bazooka ATG Ruth, 1934 Diamond Star Lefty Grove are the biggest highlights. Funny stories include the dealer, Cutthroat Larry, who saw me near the men's room on Thursday as the show closed. I was on my cell phone, when he headed to the john and hands me a 1954 Dan Dee Mantle as he walks in and says, "think about it". He comes out a coouple of minutes later and says, "come back tomorrow with the card or the cash". I had to ask how much cash. I ended up buying it (and the 41 Williams' from Larry). I went from having 10 of the Dan Dees before the show to well over 1/2 with the Mantle, Snider, Hodges, Rizzuto, Feller, etc. For the 4 nites, I stayed in 4 different locales. First nite with Steve and Al. Next nite with Spike. Friday with a buddy of mine who lives in Cleveland and Saturday with Mark Talbot. Many folks, led by Steve, bird dogged for things I needed. This led to the Hires Mays some leads on Coke caps (I did end up getting 2 group lots of Coke caps, including a complete set of 1967 Tab (not Coke) caps of the New York Mets. The swap is usually the highlight and was definately a high point for me, with raiding Ken Morganti's 71 Kellogg's dupes and letting me claim some prewar cards from a few folks. Bob Reed's son Connor, with Chris's wife and daughter sorted some 1984 Fun Food pins for me (I brought a near case of 4500 + pins). One of my best buys of the show was gobbled up at the swap my Rob Gioia, who did not think he could get his 54 Bowman Mantle for $20. I do not recall anyone discussing Sal, Kent Goto and myself being asked to leave Red Robin restuarant by the manager on Wednesday nite. He said we were a security threat! Too many things to recall everything that went on, but meeting Brock for the first time rated on the memory chart. Brian Dwyer was also on my new OBCer met list this show. Although I got there for the preview on Wednesday and was essentially at the show during all regular show hours, it took me until Sunday to get through the entire show this time. Had I more time or money, there was still plenty I would have purchased, but I was worn out by the end of the show. I will try and send out a post when I update my lists if anyone would like to assist me in even further progress. He dates his boxes, so we know which boxes have stuff few people have looked through. We just grab what looks most interesting. Although he had a 1952 Topps card he only pitched 2/3 of one inning that year. I'll forward his card, and a colorless variation thereof. Hopefully you'll see fit to add him to the Hall. His credentials given to me are: He was Walt "Monk" Dubiel, a pitcher you may remember from the Frankie Frisch years, whose obituary in October of 1969 explained his HOM credentials eloquently. "Although Dubiel had the equipment to be a topflight hurler," the obit explained, "he never seemed to reeach his true level. He was hampered by a hip injury, an ear infection, and a recurring back ailment. He was deferred from military service during World War II because of an eye ailment. And, as if he didn't have enough problems, he and his wife were in an automobile accident, although neither was injured seriously. "During his career with the Yankees (1944-45), the Phillies (1948), and the Cubs 1949 through 1951), he won only 45 and lost 53. Until the last few seasons of his career he was an excellent control pitcher. [But] a streak of wildness in 1950, while he was with the Cubs, led to an explosive incident that embarrassed Dubiel and put Manager Frankie Frisch on the hot seat." And this incident alone, I think, should enshrine him in the HOM. "The Cubs had been on a losing streak," the obit continues, "and late in July they were in Philadelphia for a series. Dubiel started a game and was sailing along with a 4-0 lead through six innings. But, in the seventh, he developed wildness and dished out two hits and six passes. Frisch, steaming on the bench, refused to remove him as the Phillies fans shouted their "In an almost hysterical outburst after the game, Frisch told writers he would have kept Dubiel in the game ^'even if he gave up 99 runs.' Frisch accused Dubiel of 'looking over his shoulder, toward the bullpen, waiting for help.' "'I'm sick of watching some of my pitchers getting into jams and then peeping at the bullpen, pleading for help. I would have taken Dubiel out if the Phillies were even getting load foul balls. But not the way he was "Dubiel, also unhappy with the humiliation and the subsequent 6-4 defeat, said he had been hit in the shoulder in the first inning by a Granny Hamner drive, and the shoulder stiffened as the game progressed. 'There was a big welt on my shoulder,' Dubiel said. "The righthander had the Phillies fans in his corner when the Cubs came to bat and Frisch took his position in the third-base coaching box. They tossed cushions and other debris onto the field in protest of Frisch's tactics. Writers also blasted Frisch." I recall reading an AP report on that game in the Detroit Free Press at the time, and it pointed out that Dubiel actually walked all six Phillies in a row, thus setting a major league record that surely still stands. In any case, I never forgot the incident, and my instinct tells me Dubiel richly deserves HOM recognition for the dubious honor. I hope you agree and can pursue his nomination. Today, I received an envelope from WALKER GUTHRIE with a TCP, a trio from the 64T set. Walker says he hopes the cards work for me...two are nicer than most of the 64s I own, and the other one will fit in quite nicely. Walker, when it comes to what I have on my wantlist, a hole in the card is preferable to one in the binder. From last week, I need to give out belated thanks to FATHER PAT, who sent along a baker's half-dozen hits to the 1965T set. Included in the pile was Cardinal pitcher Ray Sadecki...who I had the privilege of talking with back in February over the phone. That made the stack especially personal. Ray had some great stories...if he ever gives his permission to do so, I'll be happy to share some of the stuff we discussed with the group. Great stuff, guys. They're getting ready to join their new friends in my binders. A project I've wanted to work on for a while is to break down vintage sets by team. I have the Fritsch/Sport Americana book that includes easy stuff like Goudey, Playball and T205, T206 and T207. I want to break down some of the remaining sets, especially the ones that do NOT show the team name on the card, like R313 1936 National Chicle Fine Pens. I owned a big pile of these at one point and figured out some of the Red Sox, but I never completed the project and now the cards are in other hands (Mike? Joe C?) I'd like to get some help from OBC if possible. I know there are other team collectors out there so it makes sense for me to ask you -- who is on your list for Phillies, Tigers, Indians, Red Sox, etc. Then I can chip away at the remainder. If you are working on the set and have the time, I could send you a spreadsheet and ask you to mark the team names or review the data I've already collected. I'm also looking for sites/dealers who have figured out the team names already. I know that Mike Wheat identified them. Mark Macrae's catalog usually includes the team name too. Mark: Could you send me the latest catalog with 30s cards? Does anyone else know of other resources? Beckett.com doesn't include photos or teams. Teamsets4u.com doesn't include this set yet either. Thanks for your help. I hope to start doing much more research and helping others team collectors and cut back on my own expenses. This project is a good way to start. Please get in touch if you'd like to help. ================= To: "vct" , Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 21:21:54 -0400 From: "ant" Subject: Bad trader not forgotten..please look Hello All I just looked at one of our traders page which had a list of bad traders & saw: David Reed Jr. 3403 Marvel Ave. Titusville FL 32796 He lived with his brother in his house. The realtor took one glance at our house and said one word, "DECLUTTER". One of the first casualties of this edict was my collection of cards and bats. The cards are now boxed up and stored for the duration of this move and my small contingent of bats (around 90) now reside in my office. Needless to say, it has put a crimp in my trading activity. I had considered going inactive and may do so still, if it looks like this may drag on for a while. To those who have sent cards, I have not forgotten and will return fire. Probably next week I'll try to post a small group of prewars as availables and for trade. In the meatime, at least it's not 100+ degrees here any moreand we've seen rain for the first time since the 1st of August. Looks like I may have to pull the lawn mower out of retirement. Off the topic, has anyone heard from the Grizzled one lately? I ran acrosssomething for him but have not been ble to contact. I know in summer he often goes to the lake for extended periods of time. Better stop this before Ken M gets ideas. ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: 30 Aug 2007 10:22:13 -0700 From: obc_spike@yahoo.com Subject: Fantasy Football Hey obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com, You have been invited to join obc_spike's Custom League in Yahoo!
