Kind of like a lost library book maybe? All kidding aside, I hope everyone is well. I was active in OBC from late 2001 through about '03. Due to a number of personal commitments (mainly going to graduate school at nights for 2 years...) I went inactive and eventually fell off the roster entirely. In the years since I've last spoken to most of you, I've finished my masters degree, gone to Europe, gotten a new job...and oh yeah, I'm now a father! Our daughter Jenna was born last August and is now 10 months old, crawling around at 90 mph, getting ready to walk before her first birthday maybe even? We'll see. At any rate, starting sometime this spring I realized that I missed the cards, but more importantly - just the involvement and the relationships. I have just gotten back online and don't even have a wantlist posted yet, but I wanted to say hi (or as we say in NC, "hey"). I'm looking forward to becoming an active member of the group again. However, as the saying goes, the rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. After reading this e-mail, you might be looking over your shoulder, since the rumors of EVERYONE'S demise may start swirling. A couple things have happened here that if you had asked me a couple months ago, I would have said would NEVER come to First and foremost, once again proving that there's someone for everyone (and/or also that love really is blind), I've found a member of the opposite sex that wasn't totally scared off by my appearance, my many quirks, or my affinity for hoarding little pieces of beat up cardboard. Her name is Stacey and I met her at work... well, not exactly, since I actually met her before she started working overnights with the company. I had been invited to a couple cookouts at the night crew chief's house for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July the last couple years and I saw here there - she's his daughter. So I'm dating the boss' daughter - well, she's moving in and rearranging the whole house, so it's gone way past the point of going out now. She thinks I'm sexy. (Pause for laughter and to clean up whatever you just spilled, like your lunch perhaps). Bonus is that she's a HUGE Red Sox fan, so any current Red Sox, especially Manny Ramirez items with him in a Bosox uniform are greatly appreciated here. Vintage payback is likely. Next, I always said that I'd be the last one on the planet to get a cell phone. Well, everyone else must already have one, because I got mine a couple days ago. The girlfriend added me to her plan, which probably didn't cost her any more than she was paying previously. I got a free phone with a camera and several features that I'll probably never figure out and hardly ever use if I do. The phone is WAAY nicer than the one's she's using, which really irritates her ;-) The number if anyone needs to call me for some insane reason is 339-440-2862. I probably won't even have it on and the chances of me actually answering it are slim at least until I get used to having it. I will have it with me at The National Convention though, but I'm still going to wear my hat. Also, almost everyone I know has told me I should get a new car. Well... I didn't get a new car (although I've replaced just about every part in it by now, so it is like getting a new car ). Anyway, a couple things happened to it recently. One, I got into a minor accident in which I mushed the front end a little bit from not paying attention to the guy in front of me while trying to enter a highway. A truck changed lanes into the lane we were going to merge and he stopped short while I was still looking at the oncoming traffic and trying to hold a conversation with the three other people in the car at the time. I fixed some of that damage with a hammer and crowbar, but the front end still looks a little crooked. I also got a flat tire, which normally wouldn't be a problem. I pulled over to the side of the road, got out the spare and the jack... then realized that the lug wrench to take the tire off and the handle to turn the jack were both missing. I also notice a rather large hole in the bottom of the trunk that had rusted out where those items should've been... hmmm. Fortunately, my girlfriend was with me and we had a friend drive over with some help. I then replaced the two missing items and put them on the opposite side of the trunk (the side that DOESN'T leak). The other big news concerning my car (other than it finally passing the emissions test and getting an inspection sticker after over a year) is that I finally managed to fix the door. (Another prolonged pause for some of you to pick your jaws up off the floor and for Steve R. to pick himself up off the floor). For those of you who may not have known, the passenger side door on my car had not been opened in close to ten years. It just all of a sudden locked up and I couldn't get the button to come up to unlock it, not even manually. This made it rather inconvenient in the event I had a passenger with me. They either had to climb over the driver's seat or most often just sat in back and got the chauffeur service. Turns out that there's a small lever inside the door that had rusted (from lack of use most likely). A little WD-40 and some whacks with a hammer finally loosened it enough that it moves a little more freely. The only drawback is that this lever is still missing an attached spring, which was lost (along with a couple screws for the door handles) in one of the many previous repair attempts. This means that once in a while the door won't open from the inside and I have to go around and open it from the outside to let my passenger out. It's kinda like I turned my car from a taxi into a police car One of the main reasons I've been so quiet lately (and almost inactive on the card front) is that I'm in the middle of about ten projects around the house including tearing out and reinstalling a ceiling in the dining room that would've otherwise landed on my head sooner or later (most likely sooner). I've been doing a lot of yard work too, which after years of neglect is turning out to be quite a bit of work. I've also been rewarded for my efforts with a slight case of poison ivy, which isn't a lot of fun ...I'm still trying to get rid of it now. About the same time, I came down with what was diagnosed as a case of pharangitis (I woke up with a swollen uvula). I thought it was an allergic reaction or some bizarre spider bite from the yard work and my throat was going to close up, but it's more scary than life threatening. After a five hour wait in the emergency room, I was sent home with some antibiotics. If I really had something, I probably would've keeled over in the waiting room. You'd think that at 11 PM, things wouldn't be that busy in the hospital. I should plan my emergency hospital visits at a more convenient time next time I guess. My not too far into the future plans include a couple weeks vacation in July. The first week will be spent in Atlantic City (starting two weeks from today) and then the trip to Cleveland for the little card show out there. Maybe we can get together and do lunch or trade some cards. Ken, you lose, I still don't have a cell phone! :) Everyone, I have seen this woman, and she is a woman. Ken came over to pick up a box of unmentionables (no, not underwear) and the Sox were on and the girlfriend, Stacey, was glued to the TV! Everything Ken says (except probably the part about fixing the car) is true! Go Ken... a girl who will sit and watch baseball with you! However, as the saying goes, the rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. After reading this e-mail, you might be looking over your shoulder, since the rumorsof EVERYONE'S demise may start swirling. A couple things have happened here that if you had asked me a couple months ago, I would have said would NEVER come to pass. First and foremost, once again proving that there's someone for everyone (and/or also that love really is blind), I've found a member of the opposite sex that wasn't totally scared off by my appearance, my many quirks, ormy affinity for hoarding little pieces of beat up cardboard. Bonus is that she's a HUGE Red Sox fan, soany current Red Sox, especially Manny Ramirez items with him in a Bosox uniform are greatly appreciated here. The phone is WAAY nicer than the one's she's using, whichreally irritates her ;-) The number if anyone needs to call me for some insane reason is 339-440-2862. I probably won't even have it on and the chances of me actually answering it are slim at least until I get used to havingit. I pulled over to the side of the road, got out the spare and the jack... then realized that the lug wrench totake the tire off and the handle to turn the jack were both missing. I also notice a rather large hole in the bottom of the trunk that had rusted outwhere those items should've been... hmmm. Fortunately, my girlfriend was with me and we had a friend drive over with some help. I then replaced the two missing items and put them on the opposite side of the trunk (the side that DOESN'T leak). The other big news concerning my car (other than it finally passing theemissions test and getting an inspection sticker after over a year) is that I finally managed to fix the door. (Another prolonged pause for some of you to pick your jaws up off the floor and for Steve R. to pick himself up off the floor). For those of you who may not have known, the passenger side door on my car had not been opened in close to ten years. It just all of a sudden locked up and I couldn't get the button to come up to unlock it, noteven manually. This made it rather inconvenient in the event I had a passenger with me. They either had to climb over the driver's seat or most oftenjust sat in back and got the chauffeur service. It's kinda like I turned my car from a taxi into a police car ;-) One of the main reasons I've been so quiet lately (and almost inactive on the card front) is that I'm in the middle of about ten projects around the house including tearing out and reinstalling a ceiling in the dining room that would've otherwise landed on my head sooner or later (most likely sooner). I've been doing a lot of yard work too, which after years of neglectis turning out to be quite a bit of work. I've also been rewarded for my efforts with a slight case of poison ivy, which isn't a lot of fun ...I'm still trying to get rid of it now. About the same time, I came down with whatwas diagnosed as a case of pharangitis (I woke up with a swollen uvula). Ithought it was an allergic reaction or some bizarre spider bite from the yard work and my throat was going to close up, but it's more scary than lifethreatening. After a five hour wait in the emergency room, I was sent homewith some antibiotics. If I really had something, I probably would've keeled over in the waiting room. The first week will be spent in Atlantic City (starting two weeks from today) and then the trip to Cleveland for the little card show out there. Maybe we can get together and do lunch or trade some cards. This is the first time EVER that I was able to put a cell phone number under Ken's name! This could be a sign that I will find a Seaver rookie at the National this year for under $100. The key here is what hat will Ken wear to Cleveland... will it be the Wizard? Will it be a Cat in the Hat? Will it just be his OBC hat? These questions and more will be answered in about 27 more days! Now about that woman... she isn't inflatable is she? Being a Red Sox fan, she is AOK in my book. You should bring her to Cleveland. If she can put up with us for a few days, she's a keeper! And Kudos go out to all those OBC wives who deal with the guys who collect little pictures of men. Kevin's wife Joanne gets my vote to go into the OBC wives hall of fame. She even carries the wantlist book around! Ken also has the most organized chaos I have seen pertaining to his cards. Just keep her out of that closet Ken, you will never find a card you are looking for again! There is a show at Hofstra this weekend which I am planning on attending Sat. to pick up some goodie bags for Cleveland. If any of you local boys are going let me know. Are we going to try to secure tickets for the games that day or is there a way we can get them in advance? Welcome back to John Collins, good to have you back in the fold. Al has started his trek to Cleveland. NORAD is tracking the progress of Al as he already made a left out of Seattle and was seen heading in the direction of Vancouver. He may be heading to a hockey game, but this is unconfirmed because all of the Canucks officials are out of the office, since they don't have any games going on. Any get their National tix on line yet? I'm torn between a VIP or the one which includes autographs. I hate paying for them, but I hate worse waiting in line for them. Last year I got a few signed by Willie Davis. I'm going to bring some cards of the signees this year to avoid having to look for them at the show. I'm also hoping to knock the 1960 set down a few cards (only need 9 more to finish it), and to continue the insane quest for variations. Searching for a new camera that will be easier to carry around so we can have more pics at the swap meet (this will include the annual shot of Ken stuffing food in his mouth!). Remember, before there was Morganti-esque, there was Chico-esque! He had been having his problems with the disease and thought we needed to do something to really lift his spirits. Well, it was decided that we were going to attack his 1975 list (which consisted of practically nothing if I remember correctly). We didn't want to try sending the cards to just one person and then send a set to Kevin. Everyone then went full throttle to find the cards needed to have a complete set. Trips (Rick) kept a tally on the cards donated. We got updates hourly as the search was amazing! The last card was the Brett Rookie and the set was complete. Oh BTW, I forgot to mention, we built this entire set in the span of a We also decided to send a separate card with the inscription on the envelope "The Healing Power of Cardboard". Those who didn't have any 75's also added to the generosity with that envelope. We picked a day to send the cards from all over. Well, Kevin had to go to the post office and collect a MASSIVE amount of puffies. I have attached some of the emails that were sent about this event. It still makes me misty to think about that, one of the greatest moments in OBC history as far as I am conc erned. This is what OBC has always been about. We go thru birth, marriage, divorce, children, death together as a group. Some of us have met in person, but even if you haven't, there is no such thing as an OBC stranger. I saw a great baseball trivia quiz in the Buffalo News yesterday, and although I tried to find in on their on-line page, it wasn't listed, so without any further ado, here it is. Try to do it without researching on-line or looking anything up in a Baseball Almanac or similar reference book. 1) There are only four players with 10,000 or more career at bats who don't have 3,000 career hits. A big clue: Three of them were teammates on a World Series Champion in the 1960s. 2) Lou Gehrig had seven seasons with 200 hits and 100 walks. Babe Ruth did it three times. The feat was accomplished just one other time by a Yankee. Name him and the year. A clue: he has played the most postseason games in major league history. 3) He needs one save to move past Rollie Fingers into eighth place on the career lis, but he's never led his league in saves. Who is he? 4) Name the four players who have amassed 3,000 hits, 300 homers and 200 stolen bases. hint: They all played in the 1970s. 5) No player had amassed 240 hits in a season for more than half a century from 1930-1984. three players have done it since then. Two of them are active; one has done it twice. 6) In 1964, rookies led both leagues in total bases. Name each player and his team. 7) Arizona's Brandon Webb won the Cy Young award last year for a team with a losing record. That hadn't happened since 1997, when the Cy winner in both leagues played for a loser. Name the pitchers and the teams. 8) Who is the only switch-hitter in the last 70 years to lead the National League in more runs? During his prime from 1987 to 1991, he averaged 31 homers and 33 stolen bases a year. 9) Earlier this season, Tom Glavine of the Mets became the 8th lefthander with at least 2,500 strikeouts. Name the other seven. 10) Name five players whose last names begin with the letter "G" who have hit at least 49 home runs in a season. 11) He's the only Yankees pitcher to win 20 games four years in a row. He's second on the Yankees career list in wins, shutouts, and innings pitched. It might help to know he has the highest ERA (3.80) of any pitcher in the Hall of Fame. 12) Name the six switch-hitters with 300 career home runs. If you can't name the switch-hitter with the most dingers, what in the world are you even doing taking this quiz? 13) In 1951, he led the Yankees with seven saves and he also led them with seven shutouts. Two of those were no-hitters. In one of them, Ted Williams was the final out when he fouled out to Yogi Berra. Where are the "who pitched in all seven games of a World Series" kind of questions? Or "name the 1970s player who was also a professional bowler?" My take below, without the assistance of research or intelligence. 1) There are only four players with 10,000 or more career at bats who don't have 3,000 career hits. A big clue: Three of them were teammates on a World Series Champion in the 1960s. Three teammates makes me think of the Orioles, with Brooks Robinson as one of them. Mark Belanger? Merv Rettenmund? :) 2) Lou Gehrig had seven seasons with 200 hits and 100 walks. Babe Ruth did it three times. The feat was accomplished just one other time by a Yankee. Name him and the year. A clue: he has played the most postseason games in major league history. Derek Jeter in 19-mumble mumble 3) He needs one save to move past Rollie Fingers into eighth place on the career lis, but he's never led his league in saves. Who is he? Mariano Riviera? Figure he must have a led-league in there somewhere, though. 4) Name the four players who have amassed 3,000 hits, 300 homers and 200 stolen bases. hint: They all played in the 1970s. Rickey Henderson, George Brett, Robin Yount, and...Yaz? 5) No player had amassed 240 hits in a season for more than half a century from 1930-1984. three players have done it since then. Two of them are active; one has done it twice. Ichiro Suzuki (twice), Nomar, and some other guy. Jeez, guys, take a walk! 6) In 1964, rookies led both leagues in total bases. Name each player and his team. Thinking back on 1964 Rookie Cards for this one...Bill Davis? Lou Piniella? :) 7) Arizona's Brandon Webb won the Cy Young award last year for a team with a losing record. That hadn't happened since 1997, when the Cy winner in both leagues played for a loser. Name the pitchers and the teams. Hope I never get "1990s Cy Young winners" as a Jeopardy category. Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson? 8) Who is the only switch-hitter in the last 70 years to lead the National League in home runs? During his prime from 1987 to 1991, he averaged 31 homers and 33 stolen bases a year. Bobby Bonilla? 9) Earlier this season, Tom Glavine of the Mets became the 8th lefthander with at least 2,500 strikeouts. Name the other seven. Steve Carlton, Warren Spahn, Randy Johnson, Walter Johnson, Scooter Johnson, Bashful Johnson, and "Grandma-ma" Johnson (she had a nasty fork ball) 10) Name five players whose last names begin with the letter "G" who have hit at least 49 home runs in a season. How about Ron Guidry? 16) Name the three pitchers who had 3,000 carer strikeouts who never appeared in a World Series. Did they all play for the Mariners? It's about a 60 mile trip to the ballpark, albeit an easy drive with a nice I went Saturday night, had a good time as always, the Tigers winning a 10-5 slugest. For some reason, I was picked to be the 4th inning home run contestant. We always sit in the top row, away from the masses. It's still a great seat, in a beautiful old-time ballpark from the early 1900's. I'd have thought it would have given a clear message to the MC that I probably didn't want to be bothered, but it didnt' work. Anyway, if a Tiger homered in the 4th inning, I'd win a variety of prizes including silk boxer shorts from the local clothier. The MC asked me what I thought about the prizes, I asked if they had extra large, drawing a laugh from the crowd. He also complimented me on my neat scorecard, and we sat and watched the inning together. Thankfully, nobody homered, as I had no desire to win, although I did try to be a good sport about it. Anyway, that's not the story, believe it or not. The story is, I was going to go last night, Sunday, also, but there were on and off thunderstorms all day, so I decided not to go. I didn't miss much, only the first perfect game pitched by a NYPL'er since 1956 or so. ================= To: Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 20:40:33 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: Becoming American again... OBCers -- My wife and kids went back to Chicago this weekend to visit family ahead of the big move to Florida in a couple of weeks. I still have to work a few more days, so I'll just head straight to FL on Aug 4th. I was talking to my wife last night, and she told me something very funny that I had to share: My 5-yr old is basically a Brit - he moved here when he was 1 1/2 and has no idea who Abe Lincoln, Babe Ruth, or Christopher Columbus are since he's been in the UK school system. I forgot that he wouldn't remember stuff about the States until my wife told me that he looked a bit perplexed when they got to Grandma's house from the airport. He kept looking out the window, then went outside and started looking at the mailbox. In England, there are no mailboxes, just mail slots in your door. He then came back in the house and asked my wife, "Mommy, why does everyone have a little house on a pole at the end of their driveway?" Priceless... It is not factual, it is just opinion and is supported by nothing. The writer knows nothing of the history of baseball...scandal has followed baseball since its inception. For him to say that it was not scandal ridden in the '50s and '60s is a joke. How many people know that Willie Mays was banned from baseball at one time? How many people know that there were hearings on baseball for drugs as early as 1900? Baseball has always had a black eye when it comes to things like this. Did Bonds take steriods...I doubt it but I will never know. Does he work his ass off? Yep. Bonds and Clemens have said repeatadly that their off season workout is tailored after another pitcher who was accused of steroid use at one time...Nolan Ryan. Kills me. I hope Bonds breaks the record, I hope he smashes it completely and I hope that Selig has the balls to be there. Do I think Hank needs to be there...nope...Aaron has a life and it is not easy for him to travel around the country to see it...Bonds does not think he needs to be there either. Go Barry. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ================= To: Date: Sun, 22 Jul 2007 22:31:11 -0500 From: "Mark Z" Subject: Fw: fantasy football set up due to lack of interest, I am dropping the sending cards part and made it ajust for fun league... come on in...and if you want to make a side bet with me for cards, bring it! thanks, Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: Mark Z To: uvlist@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2007 10:57 PM Subject: Fw: fantasy football set up I have set up a free fantasy football league for us. I've tried, really, but it doesn't resonate with me the way the game did 20 years ago. Though, part of me says that had Junior not been injured so often since 2000, we wouldn't really be talking about this today because he'd have had that record already. However, it's just like the question of what Ted Williams's stat line would show had he not served in two wars, or What Lyman Bostock could have done had tragedy not intervened. Or even how many HRs Babe Ruth would have gotten had he not spent the first six years on the mound. But maybe it's because I can't bring myself to like Bonds. Don't get me wrong, he has every right to be an a**hole but it seems to me he thinks his sullenness generates as much interest as if he had a more effervescent personality. It's the "no such thing as bad publicity" rule. The way I see it, Bonds, Aaron and even Ruth should be judged by their eras. The game is different from what it was 35 years ago when Aaron was closing in on the record. And it is a hell of a lot different than it was when Ruth clubbed those three HRs in Pittsburgh during his final season (as a Boston Brave) to get to 714. Aaron may have finished his career at DH but it was a brand new position when he played his final season. Ruth (as a former pitcher) may have laughed at the notion of replacing a pitcher in the lineup. Today players have better training, better facilities and enough money to avoid having to work a "real job" in the offseason. These things can counteract some of the effects of so many night games, traveling across four time zones (or to other countries). Which brings me to my point: Bonds' record won't last. The guy who passes him may well be playing now. Alex Rodriguez is 31 and is poised to hit his 500th homer any day now. If he stays healthy (and the operative word is "if" -- look at what happened to Ken Griffey, Jr.), he may end up with enough homers to make Bonds wish he'd have hit more of them earlier in his career. I like to wonder what may have happened if some of the players now could have taken the field in a different era: could Ichiro have hit .400 if he'd have played alongside Cobb, Sisler and LaJoie? What about George Brett? Then there's the case of Satchell Paige: he did play in the right era but wasn't allowed to take a major league pitch until he was in his late 40s. And Josh Gibson never even got that chance. But, I digress. Barry Bonds is about to become the all-time major league HR leader. And when he trots around the bases for the 756th time, he'll have earned the record. But I still won't care. And unless I happen to be near a TV when the news breaks, I porbably won't know about it until it pops up on Yahoo's main page or I read about it in the next day's Take care, --- brockhattox@cs.com wrote: > For an editorial that says it all as far as I am > concerned, please see this > one entitled, "Barry Bonds is no Hammerin' Hank". http://www.rutherford.org/articles_db/commentary.asp?record_id=487 > Take care, > Brock I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. I will post the update when I get home from work. For those who need the info... this is the hotel of choice where most of us are staying. Details from a previous email below.... Also, Kent and I are sharing a rental car to move around town with. If any of you don't mind getting lost or not being able to find the car in a parking lot... (OK I know the lost boys stories will be told Sat nite...). Some great additions and old friends have joined the melee that is OBC at the National. Looks like I'll be trying to hit some lists when I get home tonight... HOTEL INFO Best deal was to call them directly...when I did, I got something like an extra 5% off. You have to mention that you have a bunch of friends staying at the hotel and they got the 'discount'. I think one or two might have been looking to share accommodations. I would post to the group about that. Here is a copy of the email I sent when I booked.... Homestead Studio Suites 24851 Country Club Blvd N. Olmstead, Oh, 44070 Here are the caveats... Ken got the better rate because he is staying min 6 days. I am staying 5 so the rate is 54.99/nite. Instead of doing it on line, I called directly. Pestered the guy a little and he took 5% off per nite ($52.24). Room has a full kitchen. Now all I need to do is find a cheap flight. Halfway there! I'll start the contact spreadsheets going out in a week or two after hearing from more folks. Any National rookies going? And remind me to hit the "Benchwarmers" Booth at the beginning! Also, make sure you stop by booth 1413 and catch up with Terry at Great-Catch cards. Some of you might know him for his hockey stuff. He was at the LI National a few months ago and is bringing some stuff from my list with him. Excellent guy and has good pricing. _www.great-catch.com_ (http://www.great-catch.com) . If you are looking for anything you might want him to bring, send an email there and mention OBC. Might want to consider adding him to the approved dealer list after the show. Bought a new camera so once again, there will be the OBC slideshow at the swap session. This time its small enough that I can carry it around the show. Here is a memory from 2002 show. Look who is hanging around Kurt's table... Can't wait to see what hat Ken brings this year! But PLEASE, no Grateful Dead T-Shirts! How can you not love Big Al? But wait, didn't Simi Valley car-wash mogul Dykstra bulk-up during the Phillie's last hey-day? Just a joke, but you know. Either way, you might want to take a look at a rerun of last night's "Bob Costas Now" on HBO. http://www.hbo.com/costasnow/episode/index.html Basically, they had Patrick Arnold, one of the guys that went to jail over the BALCO case and was the chemist that literally invented "the clear". If you listen to him and what he knows about the stuff and what it could do - you may change your mind. He was very clear in what he said... almost as if he wanted to "clear" his mind, so to speak. The most interesting things that I picked up from the interview was that it was called "the clear" likely because you come up clear in drug tests. Second, the clear is more than just a strength or endurance enhancing drug... Arnold stated very clearly that it also helped with bat speed AND ----> eye hand coordination. Thus the Bonds' jump in average too. Furthermore, even though not one active player except Curt Shilling would be interviewed for the show, the almighty Selig in an interview said basically that they know that Bonds took the stuff, but it was good for the "business" of baseball at the time. No harm, no foul? I think not. Baseball is based on a foundation of traditions. Sure, every era had its own difference, but there is a difference between lowering the mound to the wholesale drug cheating of most players. It is wrong to have to damage your body with drugs to stay competitive with future Alzados http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Alzado_Lyle.html. Sure Pete Rose popped speed, but that was Pete, right? lol The only thing that saves Bonds in my mind was a single point made (by Chris Rock and Arnold) . There was no rule against it at the time, so how could a rule have been broken? Nice point. I'd still be much happier if Bonds went on an indefinite DL.. Go Barry. I read the link Geno sent us regarding the "Man Who has Everything". Although the condition of his collection far exceeds most of us in OBC, I think a number of OBCers could stack up their collections against his in terms of cards. We have a number of guys who have completed all the 1948-1980 BB sets. Others that are close to finishing it, although the 52 Topps hi #s are presenting a challenge. Others have specialized in prewar. A couple even concentrate on other sports. A few of us, Mark Talbot, Dan Austin and myself have been known for the breadth of our collections, as we collect all sports. I have been pleased to show my collection to the 8 or so OBCers who have been to my house. I have been impressed by Ken Morganti's T205 and 52 Topps sets when I visited him. Steve Rittenberg has cards everywhere and Peter Mead has some great oddball sets. Linda Fitak has excellent condition prewar star cards and Mark Talbot, Earl Kilborne and Rick Svetcz have some amazing collections fo their HOMer's. Every OBCer who I have visited has had something of great interest to me. I believe I have completed 165 1980 and prior BB sets, as listed in the SCD. Add to that close to 50 FB sets, plus another 17 or so CFL, 20 Basketball and 50 hockey sets. These do include some non-card sets such as 1964, 1971 coins, AuraVision records, etc. Granted my oldest complete set is a 1943 MP & Co set, so I am envious of his 1933 Sports King set. I am down to 5 or less in 40 more vintage BB sets, and 5 or less in 32 other vintage sports sets. None of this includes my fav Coke caps. So while he has an impressive collection that is worth far more than mine, I do not think he has everything. Besides, I, like many in the group, already have an original T-206 Wagner, and he is not ursuing that set. With the additions of Brock and Mark Talbot and the deletion of Gary Mandell we are at 21. A healthy turnout for OBC, but mostly midwest national regulars. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting Brock. Out of the 21, I think Brock is the only 1 I have not yet met. Makes it harder to come up with stuff for the swap, when everyone has been through the boxes before. Open to suggestions. Since I've been in hibernation for so long, I thought I'd drop a note to the group and wish everyone well at the National. Wish I could be there but unfortunately it just isn't feasible this year. Just a quick note to those going, be sure to stop by booth 2324 at the East end (at least on my map) of the convention center, near the entrance to the autograph pavilion. This is where Helmar brewing president Charles Mandell and artist Monty Sheldon will be and I too would have been there had some recent circumstances changed my plans. There will be some nice things there on display and of course both Charles & Monty are great guys, tell 'em I said hi! Charles just called me this evening before he heads out for the show tomorrow, sounds like he is very excited and will be the first show he's attended in over 15 years. There are some names on the attendance list this year that I've never met before and the best part of the show for me has always been seeing you guys in person, yes Steve, even you. J Next year is a lock but that's a long time to wait, heck, I might even be active again by then. Safe travels to everyone this week!
