When i was in elementary school and buying nickel packs of cards at the candy store i remember a classmate named Ronnie Zerillio. I remember him because his father collected stamps and Ronnie had a small stamp collection too.And if anyone else collects stamps they know centering and condition is important. Well Ronnie's dad taught his son about the importance of condition of his stamps and Ronnie extended it to the baseball cards he bought. They had to be perfectly centered and in mint condition or he didn't want them.Which means he never traded with other kids for their cards because other kid's cards were handled and he didn't want I also remember store owners hated Ronnie's pickieness about his cards. When Ronnie bought a pack he would open it and if some of the cards weren't perfectly centered or had a little corner bump he would go to the store clerk he just bought the pack from and demand part of his money back for the "defective" cards in the pack he just bought. Most of the store owners got fed up with his pickieness and when they saw him entering their store refused to sell him any packs of baseball cards because had no intention of refunding him 2 or 3 cents on the "defective" cards in the packs he bought. Ronnie also would never put rubber bands around his cards and put them carefully in envelopes to protect their condition. I just wonder where Ronnie and all his gem mint 10 vintage cards are now?I would just love to see Ronnie today submitting a bunch of his cards to PSA and see the looks on the graders faces when they see hundreds of perfect vintage cards submitted to them by one person. Ronnie was a Yankee fan like me and i know he had a couple of dozen 1969 topps Mantles that would put to shame any of the PSA graded examples out there today. Ronnie Zerillio where are you? One would think they would be cheaper than those ones that say 'Baseball' on them but they are generally 25% higher in price and not as good. The ones that say Baseball on the front are usually Ultra Pro and they are slightly padded, the right size for a full set, and have a little pocket on the end to label the binder. I almost always get them for $5.00 and less if I buy them with the sheets. Of course you want to use ultra pro sheets too.I've never found any other brand that I was glad I used a few years later. On an unrelated topic, I picked up a T202 Ty Cobb end panel the a few weeksback to "build" a Cobb card when I find an end panel of the other player. Weshall Take Care, Geno ----- Original Message ----- From: Dave Fallen To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2007 4:08 PM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Hot Popcorn I know few of us collect Seattle Popcorn cards, but my paranoia is generic enough that some of you might have some experience or comments that is useful to me. I love the Seattle Popcorn cards. As a kid, they were available in a boxof 10-cent popcorn purchased at Sicks Stadium, home of the Seattle Rainiers. In the few years I have collected them, they have gone from around $5 at local dealers on the unusual occasion I could find them to $20 or more oneBay for cards that have tack holes, tape, and writing on the front. One card in such condition went last week for $105. For these popcorn cards, condition seems to be virtually irrelevant to their cost. This should give you an idea of their scarcity because there are only a few collectors in the country that are after these cards, far fewer than T206s or Goudeys. Before last week I had around 100 of these cards, out of a set of 347 or so. Other than one local HUGE collector who has been putting his beater dups on eBay recently, these cards rarely surface for sale. I have had my "Have List" posted on the internet for three or four years now and the only contacts I have had until recently have been from relatives looking for cards of their Uncle, Dad, or whatever. Until recently. In the last couple ofweeks I have been contacted by THREE local collectors, all of whom have substantially larger popcorn card collections that I do. I had only a few dups but none of the three needed any of those. Last week one of the collectors from Seattle stopped in Olympia on his way to Portland, and we had lunch. We each brought our popcorn cards for theother to look at, but I explained to him that I wasn't interested in trading any of my cards. Why bother trading one hole in the binder for another?Besides, I thought to myself, this guy is going to try to cherry-pick thescarcer cards and trade me for commons. Here is the problem. There is no guide at all as to which cards are veryrare, quite common, or anywhere in between. The local collectors with three times the number of cards that I have would have a better idea than I do. I don't want to be taken, but I don't want to be a paranoiac recluse either. The gentleman in question offered me a package of 27 dups for 5 of my cards. I made the deal and was happy with it but I can't help wondering. I think he was just at the point in his collecting that it was very difficult for him to make progress due to the fact that new cards just don't seem to be coming into the hobby. I don't know whether I was taking advantage of his desperation or he was taking advantage of my ignorance. Probably an unanswerable question at this time. I will say that he offered the trade enthusiastically, it was not even suggested by me so I don't have any reason tofeel that I took advantage of him. Now another local collector has again approached me, this time offering to trade for a couple of my non-dups. He is dangling some pretty desirable cards and says he will be "generous" if I agree. So again, I wonder if Iam being targeted (this guy has 270 cards) or if local collectors have just "discovered" me and are innocently trading. Sorry for the long ramble. Thanks for reading. -Dave Fallen ================= To: Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2007 11:01:17 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: Where am I going next?? That is not to say I don't have more work to do--the 62 Jello set is near impossible; a number of us are chasing the same 40-50 62-Post Canadians; and actually pursuing both a 63 Post and a 63 Jello set can be a life long mission. Presently he is a successful motivational speaker with a great message for kids. Jim comes from good stock, the family is well respected in this area. Well, except for one of his cousins who briefly dated my middle daughter in High School. I still recall the trauma created in our family when he broke up with her before she got a chance to break up with him. Lastly.... some of you knew that my son Dustin had a daughter in Foster Care. Shalynn was almost 2 years old when Dustin died. He and we were in court numerous times and at great expense in an attempt to get custody of her, but as a single college student he was denied. Knowing that his limited income as a full time student and health issues precluded his ability to fully care for Shalynn, his plan was to gain custody and give my youngest daughter, Heather, guardianship with intent to adopt. Less then two weeks after Dustin died the State removed Shalynn from the foster family she was with and gave temporary custody to Heather. Heather has had custody since, but has been denied adoption on some legal technicality and an attempt by the ex-foster mom to adopt as well. Yesterday Heather got word from Lansing that her petition to adopt has been approved. A hearing is scheduled the first week in May to confirm it as a matter of public record. It is a great time of celebration for our family. G-D is Good! Just to further confirm that, I'm done. If anyone is interested, here is what I know: There were a couple attempts to update the ACC. I think Egan's 1960's works attempted to update and the Sports Collectors Bible changed some numbering and should not be taken as gospel. There was another one in the late 60's I think that used a strange scheme that never caught on. However, Buck Barker and others issued 10 updates running into part of 1971 or 1972 in the Card Collectors Bulletin and Chris Benjamin grouped these all together in a 56 page booklet entitled "Updates & Additions to the American Card Catalog" which he issued in 1990. He may still have a few left and was selling them for $15 postpaid as of early 2007 (Wrapper #224). The numbering scheme changed slightly in 1968 and you could tell on the Topps baseball issues which year they were from the code (1971 Topps would R-414-71). Chris Benjamin can be found at: PO Box 4020 St. Augustine, FL 32085 and only takes personal checks. He has some other books available too, including his Non-Sport Guides. He has a book on Bread End labels too. I know at least one of you did as Dan Jacobsen mentioned it to me. I went yesterday after planning to go on Sunday. My wife told me Friday night she was going to Manhattan with her sister Sunday so I had to scramble and only spent a couple of hours Saturday bracketing noon at the show. I didn't see any OBC caps at all though (forgot to wear mine-actually I think it's lost....) They had probably a record number of dealers as the entire floor was filled with tables. Usually the end by the autograph guests is not filled up at all with tables but not so this time and I was impressed with the amount of dealers. I did not notice a lot of bargain bins but was looking for stuff that was pre-war for the most part, of which there was a good selection (and very high prices for the most part). My find of the day was a 1968 Topps Denny McLain "Silver Foil" pin proof that I stole for $25. Picked some late 40's early 50's Dodgers from Dan Jacobsen for his usual great prices and I found a nice 1941 Play Ball Pee Wee Reese at a good price due to some flour glue residue on the back at another table. I finally found a 66 Choo Choo Coleman as well to finish off my 66 Mets team set. The dealers seemed happy with their sales, the collectors with their purcahses and I think it was the best Hofstra show yet, although it appears the OBC grade stuff is drying up bit by bit. A lot of people mentioned how strongly vintage cards up through the mid 70's was selling and I would have to agree. Some tables with the good stuff were two or three deep at points and there was a very good selection and variety of older cards on the floor. Some dealers mentioned the Hofstra show and the J. Paul (?) Pittsbugh show were starting to bleed dealers and collectors from Ft. Washington, especially with no spring show there. The White Plains show was mentioned as well and all the dealers were talking about strong sales there this past October (I think it was October). I wonder if eBay has hit a saturation point and run up against a level of general disgust at the lack of ethics there and people are starting to hist shows again? ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ================= To: Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2007 19:13:04 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: REA Auction OBCers -- Did any of you guys bid/win anything in the Mastro or REA auctions?
