For those who know me, I collect low grade cards. Now by low grade I don't mean G-VG. No sir, by low grade I mean fair, poor and worse. So it stands to reason that I have no use for graded cards or grading services. In all of my years of collecting (30) I never owned a graded card unless I were to include a couple of Christmas presents Geno Wagner sent to me a few years ago: a GGS (Geno's Grading Service) 5 1972 Topps Thurman Munson and a CRAP (Card Raters And Pilferers) 9.8974 1972T Walter Alston. In the interest of full disclosure I did buy a PSA "pre-graded" card a few years ago just because I needed it for my set: an E220 National Caramel Harry Hooper. The pre-grade was "EVID-TRIM" apparently meaning there is evidence of trimming on the card. Since the borders of this particular card were all cut not-so-cleanly off I would say the geniuses at PSA got it right. I could have made the same determination for the original owner for only half the price he paid, whatever that was. But I digress, the fact is that I have never owned a graded card by one of those professional services...until now. In last week's mail I received my portion of a trade: an E126 Americal Caramel card graded PSA 3 (MK). In addition to the grade, the holder's label tells me the issue, name and number of the card - all of which I could have determined on my own (especially since the player name and card number are on the front of the card). Of course, there's PSA serial number and bar code as well. The holder itself is bulky and doesn't really fit the card too well, nor does the holder fit in my box too well. I'm aware of the various methods of freeing this card from it's plastic purgatory: hammers, screwdrivers, drills, dynamite and other tools of escape that would make Copperfield jealous. When I go to a show I chuckle at, and for the most part ignore, dealers who have cases full of graded cards. I know full well that dealers are in the business of making money and they can make more of it by selling graded cards instead of putting out dime and dollar boxes. But on the other side of the spectrum from increased prices, there are other aspects lost with a graded card. I can't feel it. I can't put it in my binder. I can't smell it. I can't "enjoy" it. Besides, have there been any studies on the effects of cards sealed in these things over time? A few years ago, I organized a card flipping contest at the annual GBSCC show in Wilmington, MA. Some of my OBC brothers and I gathered by a wall in the lunch room, each armed with a pile of commons and played flipping games. It was as fun to flip the cards as it was to watch the reaction of some bystanders. I can remember one gent warning me that I risked bending the corners by flipping them. I assured him that it was OK - the corners were already bent to begin with. So now with graded cards everywhere I suppose the next step of collecting evolution is to acquire a bunch of slabbed cards and flip the slabs against the wall. Or maybe not: kids can't afford packs anymore, never mind graded cards. So now I have this slab and am unimpressed. I sort of feel like the Mick Dundee character when he first arrived in the big city: seeing this "modern progress" and not thinking too much of it. Of course, I'm using the internet to write and post this messgae so I guess it can't be all bad :-) Now if y'all will excuse me, I'm going to look for my hammers, screwdrivers, drills and dynamite. Perhaps someday I will orgainze an empty-slab flipping contest. Happy Collecting! ================= Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 21:41:09 EST To: OCTraders@yahoogroups.com, vct@lists.vintagecardtraders.com, From: biggies@aol.com Subject: Mass card shows tomorrow I am headed for a sweep of shows in Mass tomorrow. By the nature of our group we have not paid much attention to graded populations, grading services, fees and a whole world of stuff that has originated in the last 10 years. I remember when even Mr. Mint was steadfastly opposed to graded cards. Lionel Carter didn't own a graded card either, although that all changed when he went to sell his collection. If I were selling my collection, I would suddenly develop a different notion about the value of graded cards. However my heirs, successors or assigns (as they say in the legal world) will have to deal with that themselves. My current graded card collection consists of one card I freed from its tomb and another that has so far escaped my vices - and tin-cutters. It does save time at card shows by just skipping the slabbed cards/dealers. I like Jim's ideas of a card case flipping contest and OBC graded cards. George Vrechek PS FYI Next week's SCD will have an article I wrote (in July) on collecting cycling memorabilia eg Tour de France. ================= To: , Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2007 16:47:54 +0000 From: LYONS RONI Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: [OBC-Announcements] November report I have to agree,if someone is so inactive that they can't respond they should be put on the inactive list if it's a mistake they will eventually see that they are inactive and let someone know. Geordie spends an inordinate amount of time tracking people down - he has much more patience than I ever would! The biggest problem I have with it is sending cards to people who don't care anymore. I don't want anything in return, just a note on the Thanks server to say it arrived and somebody was grateful that I took the time to pop a card in an envelope. The unanswered ones could have been sent elsewhere if you knew the person wasn't actively collecting anymore. To be "active," there is no requirement - you can never send out or receive a card and be active, some folks just enjoy the comraderie. I certainly send out fewer cards now than I ever did, mainly due to the state of my dupes box, which needs an infusion. Anyway, the vote seemed to pass by a wide margin, so maybe we just need some clarification on what the issue was. It's nice to have a sort of controversial issue again - we haven't had a good barnburner in Take Care, --- LYONS RONI wrote: > I have to agree,if someone is so inactive that they > can't respond they should be put on the inactive > list if it's a mistake they will eventually see that > they are inactive and let someone know. I think we're on the same page in wanting to keep Geordie from spending too much time tracking people down. Putting the onus on members to leave at the six-month announcement would mean a lot less email back-and-forth for him, since few members leave over a year. I definitely cherish the connection of people sending cards and getting acknowledgments--it would be a bummer to have that slip away, unnoticed. Not to ding VCT specifically, but that's my only other trading group and the emails are few and far between compared to OBC. My impression is that the next six-month membership "exit poll" (in January?) will answer some questions. If it doesn't, do you promise to run for OBC-AC on the "Respond Positively" platform? Our Tigers have just pulled off one of their biggest deals in decades, and provided everybody stays reasonably healthy, should go into 2008 with one of the strongest lineups and best rotations in baseball. Adding Miguel Cabrera to a starting lineup that already includes Ordonez, Sheffield, Guillen, Granderson, Polanco, and Renteria is awesome! And there isn't a team in major league baseball would would balk at a starting rotation of Verlander, Willis, Rogers, Bonderman and Robertson. OK, we gave up 2 TOP prospects to make this work, but in return we're getting 2 young (24 & 25) established major league stars. We're not talking about giving up the farm for 30 to 35 year olds here. I bid on 8 single card lot auctions of his and I promptly paid. After a few weeks, I sent him a message asking if the cards had shipped and received no response. Over the next few weeks I repeatedly sent emails that were ignored. Then I checked his feedback, he had been a longtime buyer of cards and received perfect feedback, but recently he had ventured into selling and he did the same thing to others. I thought maybe he was sick or something rendering him unable to deliver the cards but he had been bidding in auctions and paying people for cards long after mine ended. The auctions that I won were very good prices, so I am assuming he thought he would get more for the cards and wanted to renege on the deal. After filing a complaint Paypal was able to recover my money. The other two are: SMITHAMANIA OR SMITHMANIA, he had multiple single lot auctions up and offered a one price shipping cost of $3.00 for unlimited single card lot auction that a buyer won. Usually when that happens, I will bid on multiple single card lots that I would normally never bid on if the shipping cost was $3.00 for a single card. If I only win one auction that is the risk I assume and I gladly pay the inflated shipping cost. The goal is to win a few auctions to make the shipping cost reasonable. I won two auctions which was fine and I promptly paid. When the package arrived, the was a dollar bill, one of the cards, and a note saying that he accidentally double listed one of the cards that I won so he was refunding me the dollar that I paid for the card. I wrote he saying that I would have appreciated an email before he shipped the card offering the option of reversing the other auction (since I never would have bid on the one card and paid $3.00 shipping). His response was, and I quote "haven't you ever made a mistake before?". I wrote back saying yes, I have made plenty of mistakes, but I dont ask other people to pay for them. The result was he put ME on HIS no bid list, which I told him was fine because obviously I would never bid on one of his auctions again, and I wound up paying $4.00 for a severely creased 1968 Eddie Matthews JACKBO, I had won an auction of 6 1970 Baseball Topps in EX to EXMT condition. When the card arrived there was severe damage to one of the corners on all six cards. Due to careless packing by him, the cards had slipped out of the protective covering that he used and were damaged during the shipping. When I wrote to him, telling that due to his poor packing the cards were damaged, he wrote back saying "I'm sorry, that is too bad". I then wrote back asking him if he was going to do something about it and he told me that he couldnt because it would cut into his profit margin. I am not kidding he really said that. Then to top it off, he told me he was not responsible because the cards were in the condition listed in the auction when he sent them! Incredible. Anyway, if anyone has others that I can add to my list, I would really appreciate the heads up. ================= Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2007 17:41:15 EST To: tdmassimo@yahoo.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: LUURSCJG@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] EBAY Seller to avoid Jed Drinkwine is one I've had trouble with. Wow how things change, yet remain the My bio was included in the book my kids had written on my life: Thought you would get a kick out of it as collectors! Mery xmas to all! Old Griizly Probably 1948. I was sitting in the living room of my friend, Tom's house in Drexel Hill, Pa. We had just bought some ugly packs of b/w cards and were stuffing gum in our mouths. His Dad, Walt, said, "Hey, kids, here is a box of cards I used to have as a kid!. Enjoy!". His Granny added, " If you're lucky, you'll get a Puddin' Head Jones or Putsy Caballero!", as she polished off her quart of Breyer's vanilla ice cream. That started it. Then we got the two-wheelers in 1950! Mobility! Down to Clearfield Drug Store on City Line or "Poison's" on State Rd. (called that 'cause of the sign in the window). Those summers were beautiful. Carrying grocery bags to ladies' cars to get money for 5 cent packs. Putting chewed gum on a stick and dipping into the grates to retrieve thrown cards. My buddy, Chuck, who I met later in life told me how he swept up the cards in his dad's barber shop and threw them away at day's end. Went to Mexico for 3 weeks in 1949. Tom gave me ten Bowman packs as a going away present. Clarence Maddern was the only new card. Still have it! and a dupe, thanks to you guys! 1952 came and went. Ugly Topps appeared! Yuk! Big and clumsy. Glad when football season got here. I could go back to those small, neat Bowman cards! War cards and Hoppy cards also were cool. When we weren't playing softball in Dutch Loeb's League, or watching the big kids at fireman's field in the Vets League, we were flipping and trading. Funny how I got all those great Playballs and double cards that Tom's dad gave us. Guess I was the best flipper and 1954! Big things. Moved to Bryn Mawr, Pa. Dad got a big promotion and we had to move to a bigger place. House was featured in House and Garden Magazine as the 3rd "House of Ideas". Lonely in the new neighborhood, so I began playing APBA! I still have the records, and same league going today in my eternal APBA game of 54 World Series competitors. Some stars coming along! I have an APBA room, and occupy myself with this activity about 3-4 games per week. Great Tension-reliever! So it was 1955 and I turned 16, found girls and bought a car! Good Bye cards. The exodus was so great, I saw my first 1955 Bowman in 1988! I was just lucky in that I made sets of all years, 1948-1954 and stuffed them, along with the Playballs, under the eaves in my attic! Mom, who tipped the scales @ 225# was too fat to retrieve them, so there they remained until 1986. I was divorced in 1973. Remarried in 1975 to the Great Betsy. The beautiful Anna is the result of this union. Left for the training business, where I exercised my education and mouth in that field with Xerox, GTE, Honeywell, Shared Medical, SKF Bearings, and Bailey Controls. Along the way, I started my own firm, Morganics Inc. which specializes in team training in complex, international, high-tech, long selling-cycle sales. I augment this with training in Presentations and Behavior Impact and some specially designed stuff. Gave that up in 1998 and became a Financial Advisor; running a family investment business under the name of "PencoydLP". Other Interests: We travel a lot; Turkey, Greece, Dubai and Egypt in 2007. I bought a price book and was hooked: puting full sets together from 1948-1990. Some UV(UGH) stuff. My collection grows. It is becoming an avocation. The more I collect, the more I want! Help! Greed is overpowering me!(:>) I have as my goal to finish those T205s and T207s by Dec 2010! I have lots of Good stuff to trade and tend to be quite generous if you can come up with what I need. My favorite collecting stories: Well, here goes: Buying the full T-206 set for $8,000( minus the big 3) from a bail bondsman. The owner had put them up as collateral against a $8,000 loan to get his prostitute girlfriend out of prison. She escaped to California and left him holding the bag! The $$$ paid for the cards! No Kidding! $5 for 90% of the 1957 Topps Basketball set in mint condition from a 18 yr. old kid as he left a pawn shop...............oh there were three Russells in Lady called me. Husband had committed suicide. Full mint sets 1951-56 Baseball, Football and Ringside. I put the sets in plastic and took her son to shows, helping him fill in gaps. A year later she called and sold me whole collection which I bought with 2 other guys. I got: Ringside 1950 Boxing, 1955 All Star Football, 1955T, 1955B, and upgrades for 1950-1953 in addition to " Horrors of War" and other paper stuff. Bought partial collection from guy of 1930s stuff. He had drawn on 600 Goudeys, Batter-ups, Playballs. I removed most marks with Clorox! (Carefully!) Great for collection. Where else can you get a '33 Goudey Ruth for $1? Bought an old steamer trunk with 300 T-206s glued in it. Paid $300. Steamed them off with a wall paper steamer. Five Cobbs led the race! Upgraded my Bailbond set.....and use the steamer trunk for storage. Bought 300 HOF autographs, including football and other sports from the estate of an old queer who worked for the Academy of Music! estate. Great autographs which I matted and framed. Sold two: Koufax and Greenberg to a friend. They now hang in Tel Aviv in the Maccabiah games HOF! Bought an album with 1500 x 1887 cigarette cards INCLUDING Allen and Ginter set. Problem; no backs on any of them. Steaming these out and mounting them in frames. I took a professional matting course and am starting this business in my basement! Specialization: Sports Memorabilia framing! Any thing to mat and frame? Give me a call! I am getting real good. Best item in collection: Matted and framed silk of John McGraw, sent me by Mr. Jamo Jim Montgomery! Thanks to all and keep OBC rolling! **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004) ================= Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2007 18:57:32 -0800 (PST) To: HMorgan707@aol.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Geno Wagner Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] 10 year update! Most of the group was golfing while Josh went card shopping at a local card show in a mall nearby. The post golf luncheon & brewskis were at the Haufbrau Haus. Josh came sauntering in with this binder of 1941 Payballs he had just purchased. He mentioned the seller approached dealers at the show who wouldn't even give this guy the time of day, so Josh ask him to look at what he was trying to peddle. As they say, the rest is history. Not only was the price amazing but the condition of the cards was also unbelievable. As I recall the seller had collected the complete set as a kid and the cards had barely seen the light of day in many years. I also miss the OBC-Vegas trip. **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004) ================= Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2007 01:24:59 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "T.J. I have the football set, most of the basketball, but only Mays in the BB. 1 of the Kalins looks like all the other Mattel records I have, picture on 1 side that is inside a disc that has a very small lip. For those that need to see it e-mail me and I will forward Rocky's e-mail to you. The other interesting item deals with 1967 Dexter Press. There are supposed to be 12 All Star cards in the set. The pictures are the same as the regular issue, however, execept for the Bunning, Mays & Santo, the All Star text on back is supposed to be longer. There is supposedly no way to differentiate those 3 from the regular issue, according to both Beckett & SCD. A few of you got me close by saying that it is Milton Bradley card. A little research was needed to determine the year. SCD catalog states that the only difference in the 69 & 72 Milton Bradley cards is the font on the red #1s. The 1s on the 69 set do not have a base while the 72 set has a base on the red 1s. If you look at the one thatI have, it appears that the 1s have a base, so it must be a 72. Does that sound right to everybody that knows these cards?
