I won't try to sway anyone - just encourage all of you in OBC to go & vote for your favorites. Since I am a member of the Greater Boston Sports Collector's Club, it doesn't cost me anything to get in so what the heck? I managed to hit one of my short lists, finding 2 of the remaining 3 T220 boxing cards I need for my set and also picking up a couple of the rarer silver borders in a good deal. The only other major highlight was spending some time in a dime box at the end of the night. Any time I see actual cardboard in these types of boxes I stop and take a peek. I found about half of the 1973 Topps high numbers (in real nice shape) and a 1964 Topps high number in this box. That night at home I took out my 1973 set and decided to try and upgrade some of my own high numbers. As it turns out, nearly every one of the cards I got from that dime box was an upgrade! I got to the show bright and early on Saturday and found Bob Donaldson so we ended up walking the aisles together for a while. Bob was having fun shopping for Brock Hattox and I was having fun assisting Bob in his effort. Later on I spotted Sean McGowan and chatted with him for a bit. Before I knew it it was noon, which means the annual gathering of OBC'ers in the Fez Room for lunch. This year OBC was represented by Bob, Sean, Ken Morganti (with Stacy), Spike Glidden and yours truly. In addition to having a pretty decent chicken pie for lunch, Bob helped me out with dessert by letting my pick a couple of Hostess cards out of his dupes box in addition to some 1960 Topps hits. I spent my afternoon roaming the aisles with Spike, catching up on things and working on our page turning and box hunting skills. My cardboard highlights on Saturday included an M101-4 Sam Crawford, a super cheap 1941 Double Play of Hank Greenberg (thanks Spike!), a 1946 Reyes Johnny Mize and a B18 blank Overall the show was a good one and well atended. By far and away it is the best show in New England and has been for many years. Lots of Red Sox, current and former, were signing autographs all weekend. This plus the lousy weather outside led to good sized crowds. Vintage cards could be had...for a price. Not too much in the way of true bargain boxes, though. It was nice to catch up with some of the friendlier dealers there such as Kevin Savage and Greg Fisher. Of course, it's always great to spend some time with my fellow OBC'ers...which trumps any cardboard I could possibly find. Rocky Wirtz took over the Hawks after the passing of his father, and he is slowly moving the Hawks in the right direction. First, he got rid of GM - pain in the rear - Bob Pulford. Hi all... I was out of town last weekend, finally getting to spend a few vacation days up at the Ranch II in northern Minnesota for the opener of deer season. I no longer hunt, but it was great to be around my dad as well as my cousins and their friends. While I was up there, one of the guys asked if I still collected cards. I told him yes, then started describing this group. He and his son (adult) were both mesmerized by the stories I told about random acts of cardboard, the auctions, and so forth. It reaffirmed to me how special this group really is. Throughout the week I have been putting my '74s into pages and trying to get a little organized downstairs. As I was going through some 800 ct boxes, I ran across one that I had apparently used to clean up sometime in the past, as it had no theme for the cards that were enclosed. While looking through the box and reacquainting myself with the cards, I came across a slip of notepaper... from Dave Kolenda. I read it and started to tear up a little, but thought I might share it with all of you anyway... I hope you'll understand why. The note read: =========== I found a few more cards for you. To answer your question from the last time I sent you a box ("What did I do to deserve this?"), the answer is: You asked! All of these cards only had one person asking for them - or I sent other dupes to the other person. Enjoy! ============ There was no date on the note and that, I believe, is fitting. The message is timeless, as perfect reminder of our friend's kind heart and giving spirit. Normally, I'm not one to allude to religion, as I believe everyone has the right to their own private beliefs, but his simple reply reminded me so much of another man's reply ~2007 years ago when folks asked why they were blessed by the Lord. At any rate, time to get my dupes box reloaded and get back into the swing of things! ================= Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 08:29:28 EST To: xtrjmx@cox.net, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: LUURSCJG@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Spirit of OBC... This one was quite different for me. It is the first time since I started attending about 7 years ago, that the US $ was lower than the Canadian $. I knew this would greatly affect my purchasing. Friday started great as at the very table I went to, I was able to score a big stack of Canadian T-218s. This was a dealer who knew me, said he picked them up in a group of non-sport and gave me a deal. Also on Friday, I was looking through a $.25 bargain bin for some reason (I sometmes do that for fun, although there is virtually nothing I am interested in that could sell that cheaply), when I found 2 1969 Topps BB white letters. My best deal on Friday was a small group of 5 what looked like 1936 Goudey Wide Pens. These, however, did not have any border. They did not appear to be reprints though. I asked the dealer what they were, and he said he did not know, but I could have them ALL for $15. Although I knew there were various types of Wide Pens, I was not aware fo the borderless version, known as Type 3. Among the 5 I got was my hometown hero and key to this grouping of Hank Greenberg! Other Friday pick-ups included a few Coke caps (my favs) and from the same dealer as the Wide Pens, what we believe is a 1953 Cleveland Indians Team Issued picture/photos. I got 20 of them, including Feller, Wynn & Lemon. They are NOT in my 2008 SCD, as the group also included Aber. Now I need a checklist so I can add what is probably 4 missing photos to my wantlist. So 2 more sets started on Friday. Other Friday pick-ups included a stack of 1930s BB Diamond Matchbooks, a few 62 Jell-o,l 3 hits to my shrinking 62 & 63 Post CFL sets and a Willard's Chocolate Disappointments included, almost making through the entire show on Friday, even though I did not get there until 4 (it opened at 1). Normally it takes me almost 2 full days to get through the show. Fewer dealers, and more selling stuff we would not be interested in wax, UV, graded, non-sport, non-collectibles, etc.). The lack of getting a free autograph with my weekend pass (last time a name hockey player was signing and you got 1 free auto with a weekend admission) and this will sound stupid, but the Toronto Star did not give away free papers. Usually you can get a free paper every day for me to do Sodoku and see how my Detroit teams are faring in my absence. On a positive note for the first time they had a hot dog vendor right outside the convention hall selling grilled dogs, sausages, etc., which was a choice now with the concesstion stand inside that sells mainly cardboard pizza. I also ran into Gord Ellis who has been trading with a few OBCers recently. Gord told me he has been so busy lately he has not been returning e-mails to start new trades. he hopes to change that soon, so do not give up on him if you have been trying to swap with him. He has some good things to swap. I just wish I had stuff he needed in the condition he wants. Saturday's highlights were running into Carlos Alcazar and his sidekick Wes. Rob Chadwick, of OPCC also flew into town and we looked at a few tables together. I even had remembered to pull packages for each of them. I was at the show from 11-5 on Saturday and only made 2 purchases. Both were from US dealers, including Gary Nuchereno who is known to OBCers. I got a horrible looking 1964 Kahn's Rose and a 41 Double Play from Gary along with a set killer of an oddball set for another OBCer. The other purchase took lots of haggling but I finally was able to purchase some prewar, including my first 1936 Diamind Star high number and a type card of a 1951 Topps Team card. Both were in brutal Tipton Mint condition. I was very disheartened as I had been to the show for 2 days, had pretty much covered everything, and not made many purchases. Billed as the BEST hockey show, I had not yet purchased a single hockey card. Nothing from 2 of my regular suppliers. Were they cutting me off cold turkey? Don't they realize I am an addict and need my Sunday was far and away the best day of the show from me. Cutthroat Larry Kerrigan came up with 4 slightly damaged 1936-37 OPC Hockey including the key Howie Morenz card, at less than 10% of book. I now have 21 of 36, including many of the stars for this set. Biggest purchase for the whole weekend and my first hockey acquisitions. Other purchases included a few OPC BB stars, including a set killer for an OBCer. A pair of low grade 1933 World Wide Gum cards and then a purchase of some nice looking, except for a previous owners penned signature on back of some early Topps Bb Stars and a few more OPC stars for the dupes box. I later ran into Dick Zimmerman, the OBC dealer from Atlanta that had flown into Buffalo and come over to work on some sets for himself and see what he may pick up. I was able to point him to a few dealers and also was able to give him a huge hit to one of his OPC BB sets. This is the second time I have given Dick stuff for his own collection. He mentioned that and that he owed me big. Always nice to hear that from a dealer. I hope to collect in Chicago next year. Another dealer who usually is ONLY buying had some stuff for sale on Sunday, including a bunch of early 1960s FB inserts. I have never been able to swing a deal with this dealer before, but this time I bit the bullet and also found 1 of the 2 OPC hockey Orr's I need to complete that run. I also picked up some prewar hockey from him. Next a former dealer, he sold out his entire inventory at the last show, but then found some things in the attic, was at Cutthroat Larry's table and asked me for some info on 1953 Canadian Exhibit cards. I happened to have an old checklist from a guide in my briefcase. He had tried to sell them to another dealer who lowballed him. He knew I would have an interest and initially asked for almost 1/2 my old guide price. He finally came down to about 1/2 that and I bought them. The downside is that after I got back to my sister's and looked them up the prices for the stars in that set had fallen considerably. So my excellent buy, wasn't. I finished up the day by going back to a dealer I had bought a few things from over the weekend and made an offer for some 1939-1940 OPC Hockey photos. The stack has the key Eddie Shore in it. He said he never would have even listened to my offer on Friday or Saturday or even earlier on Sunday. He stated he had a good show and was willing to move some stuff at a good price to make it even better nad to please a regular customer. We struck a deal and I now have almost 1/2 the set, including about 1/2 the stars. Final purchase of the show was from OBC dealer, Greg Fisher of Cameo Cards. Greg and I had some good chats during the weekend. I have never purchased much from Greg, but I did have a good time chatting. Sunday made this a good show. Turned a disappointment into a pleasure. Gave me more hope for the next show. A side note, the 1965-1968 OPC BB is getting even harder to find, not that I was looking hard for them. I would also suggest finishing up the 1972 high numbers and 1971 semi-highs before people realize they are in shorter supply relative to other series in those years and prices should be higher. Does anyone in OBC or on the Tigers List intend visiting Scotland in the near future - either for business or pleasure? The reason I ask is that I have my eye on a new WiFi-enabled multimedia player (an Archos 605 - check it out..it's superb) which I was hoping someone could bring across for me. The price differential between the US and the UK is VERY significant ($375 as opposed to $600 over here). It would be relatively easy to have someone ship one over to me, but that would mean paying substantial import tax and duty at my end, thus negating most of the saving. Arrived early and picked up some 1955 Topps high numbers, 1951 Red Backs, some bulk, and a couple stars from Wayne Johnson and JD Heckathorn. Another bunch of reasonably priced hits were found from a dealer named Discount Dick. Then over to Bill Henderson's table where I met up with Gary Mandell. We picked through Bill's OBC boxes and found some pretty good deals. Caught up with TJ Valacak and thanks are in order for a couple 1970-71 Topps Hockey. The afternoon was even better as several stars including as 1956 Ted Williams, 1955 Ernie Banks, and 1953 Satchell Paige were found at tables of smaller dealers. Some more bulk and a few football hits completed the day. There were a couple more deals I passed on a a few where what I wanted to pay and what the dealer wanted to charge was not close. No Exhibits or Red Man's this time. All in a a good day with lots of hard to find hits to the wantlist. The wantlist is updated and I'm down to three or less on many sets and several of them are commons. Any help is appreciated. It's never hard to find OBCers at a show. Just go to the nearest bargain bin and wait a few minutes. Great to see TJ and sorry I couldn't make Saturday or Sunday to run into other OBCers. I talked to TS O'Connell, Al Rosen and BA Murray at the show about upcoming SCD articles. Augusta Cards had a good selection at reasonable prices. Most dealers were pretty friendly since it is a lot less hectic at tables these days. Kevin Savage had a nice stack of 70 baseball exhibits with modest typing on the back for $140 that I should have grabbed. Oh, well. You never quite finish the quest anyway. Kevin's associate ? liked the 1952-3 Topps printing article on our website. If anyone else is working on the 1968 Topps Milton Bradley baseball issue (bright yellow backs) and has any dups to trade, let me know. I have a few extra commons. This is a challenging variation to complete in that the bright yellow backs are probably 1% of the population but fortunately at zero price premium, at the moment. The #66 Topps Casey Cox variation is actually a regular Milton Bradley card. It lists at a significant premium as should the rest of the bright yellow backs - if anyone gave a hoot about the back color other than a few of us characters. On Friday, I met up with George Vrechek within five minutes of being in the show. This might be the first time that George did not show me some new variation. Regardless, it was good to meet up with George. I managed to hit a only a few tables Friday night, but I was able to find some good deals on my 53-56 sets. On Saturday, I met up with Gary Mandell and Ron Perry. The last I saw of Ron, he was headed over to the crowded food court. Thanks to his post today, I know he survived. Gary and I spent a little time together. I was able to "supervise" his purchase at Uncle Dick's table. I also had the pleasure of meeting one of Gary's favorites - Frank Thomas. I added Frank to a 16x20 photo of the 2005 White Sox. Throughout the day, I was able to add more to my 53-56 sets, pick up a 59 Berra to knock that set to an even 10, a 67 Mantle, a few 22 Goudey commons, and a few oddball prewar Red Sox cards. On my way out of the building, I even picked up two cards for my 55 Rails and Sails set. It was really a great time. I have added three sets to my list; the 52 Bowman, 54 Topps, and 55 Topps. Any condition and any hits are welcomed, as are trades. I will also ask some OBC friendly dealers if they are interested in bidding on this (and giving me a shot if they win). ================= Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2007 17:28:57 -0500 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com,uvlist@yahoogroups.com From: Sean McGowan Subject: twice-a-year interuption It is that time again, although I think this is a little early, for you to let me know if you want a box of '08(yikes) topps. For those of you unfamiliar... I buy a case or two (sometimes more) and send them out at cost. These are the 36packs/box 11ish cards/pack "hobby" boxes. The cost per box for me has increased to $43, so, if I mail it to you it usually is around $7 postage and insurance, for a total of roughly $50. At the Boston SCC show a couple weeks ago, they had series 2 topps hobby boxes for $29! If only you could predict that they would be there each year! I need to tell my "connection" how many cases I need by the 25th, so please let me know asap if you want any boxes. I need to know if I have enough guys to get 2 cases or not. Thanks. Now back to your regular pre-1980 programming.... Oh, yea, and to make up for the interuption... anyone need '63 #535,565 or '62 #527,565? I got them cheap at the aforementioned show. I don't know about you guys, but I think it's getting harder and harder to pick up a bargain on ebay these days. Once in a while though, one of those days come along where it all goes right. I used my "scattergun" bid technique a few weeks ago in an attempt to pick up a few 1960s and 1963s. I placed low-ball bids on nearly 80 cards from one dealer and ended up winning 27 of them. The cards arrived today, and I'm stunned. They are far, far nicer then I expected!! I've just knocked 10 cards off my 1960 birthyear set, including Ernie Banks, Norm Cash, Don Drysdale AS, 2 other AS cards, 4 hi#s and 1 semihi. Ernie cost 7 bucks, while the rest ran between $3 and $4. This is by far the biggest hit this list has seen in some time. Suddenly, the 1960 set is within my grasp. Still 27 cards to go - and some toughies left, no doubt - but I'm beginning to think that it may be within reach!! The 17 1963 cards came mostly from that pesky semi-hi series, with a few hi#s thrown in, again running at about $2-$3 per card. The BIG successes however were a really nice Warren Spahn and my star buy, the Bombers Best Tresh/Mantle/Richardson for the princely sum of $14 - no marks, no creases, a great card!! So, I'm off to spend the evening placing these cards lovingly into the current empty slots in my binders, and to dream about closing in further on that 1960 set!!
