Also sorry if by chance you have gotten e-mail from me attempting to thank Bill Ashton about 5 times A few days ago I had swtiched my e-mail ("oldbaseball") from Yahoo to Google's Gmail in the hopes that it would be easier to manage from my pop email program (my other e-mail address is Gmail). Apparently that was not to be the case. I sent out a waiver on the wantlist server fine on Monday night, but after that, anything I tried to send to any of the OBC servers from Gmail did not get delivered. I don't think it actually "bounced" - if that was the case, Yahoo didn't record that in the Yahoogroups info section. And the mail wasn't returned either. Last night in trying to fix the problem, I switched my e-mail for OBC back to the Yahoo address. Though I haven't been completely problem free on the servers with that one in the past, there were less problems. But my messages are still not getting posted. Has anybody had problems like this recently? In the past I just attributed it to the wackiness of Yahoogroups, and it usually had a way of resolving itself. I'm posting this directly from the Yahoogroups webstite - not my e-mail - in hopes that it will actually go through. I work in IT for a career, but I'm not a developer. Can any of you more techincally inclined people out there suggest anything? Many thanks and happy Friday! -John Collins PS - Go Cubbies tomorrow with your backs to the (ivy-covered) wall!!!! ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Fri, 05 Oct 2007 18:15:14 -0400 From: typecard@aol.com Subject: Auction in Honor of Dave Kolenda In the past when an OBCer has passed on, we have held an auction within the group and donated the proceeds to a charity selected by the family in honor of our friend. The way it works is that one OBCer keeps track of donated items and the current high bids. At the end of the auction, the winning bidders send payment directly to the OBC Treasurer and the donors send the items to the winners. I have volunteered to be the lot/bid tracker for this auction. Before we proceed, the OBC-AC feels it would best if we had the blessing of Dave's wife Denise that she would like us to do this and also to suggest a charity to which we could send the donation in his honor. I have never met Denise, but I know there a number of OBCers who have. Would one of you who know her please contact her and request her approval and the name of a charity. Please email me before? you contact her so that we have only one person contact her and not overwhelm her with emails and calls. Email and AIM finally together. Anyway, if I ever had to give up Cardenal, Monday, Swisher, Madlock, and Reuschel, I would have went with Oakland... I will caveat the offering with the fact that it is only about a third of the original catalog, as I like to take an exacto knife to it and cut out all the UV stuff and tape it back together. So this one has all the pre-1981 stuff, and the vintage minor league section at the back. It makes it cheaper to ship, that's for sure! Outstanding, but I think we can get to $1,500. We added the final lots on this update. There were a ton of bid emails and you may not be leading the items you just bid on, so please check. I'm camping with the Cub Scouts tonight so there will not be another update posted until tomorrow lunchtime. Tonight, please review the current bids and the lots which are now bidless, and find something you need. The quote of the auction is contributed by Dave Fallen, who said "If no one is going to bid against me, I guess I'll have to do it myself." and he bumped his own bid. Rules for Sunday! 1) No more lots will be added. 2) I am making no more bids for myself. 3) Bidding will end at 9pm Eastern time and I'm counting 9pm by when the emails are datestamped in my inbox. 4) I will try to post several updates between Sunday lunch and 9pm. 5) After the auction closes, I will post the final results by 9:15 or so. In that box in the upper left where all that info is, you can scroll up and then add the set as complete. You can also add it by condition (no they don't have a Tipton category lol). I never had problems adding cards into the list, my problem has always been with the reports (printing them the way I want it). I always used the DOS version (I think I still have to find that for Kent). Very easy to use and create sets that weren't in the list. I have thought long and hard about this but just do not have the time nor energy to devote to full time membership any more and with my recent focus on collecting older T & E cards and my corresponding lack of dupes in those eras it doesn't seem fair to stay active. I'm sure I'll be back to active status at some point but right now this is the best choice for me. I still plan to keep up with the Ramblings and Announcement servers and will certainly be at a few shows here and there; the next one is likely to be Hofstra in two weeks. Hopefully you will be seeing more articles from me too, like the ones in the last two issues of Old Cardboard. Writing those took a lot of the somewhat incidental free time I have of late and made me realize I can't squeeze everything into the available hours of the day, much as I would like to. This feels a little weird as OBC has been part of my life longer than even my kids have but for now, I am inactive. Thanks for all the wonderful cardboard sent my way over the years. They lumped together cards of widely different values into the same categories...so cards the are $3900 in nrmt have the SAME vg value as a card that books for 2600 in nrmt. They eliminated the differentiation in prices and lumped cards in $50, $100, $200 segments. Stupidly, they have dividing lines at about $2500...so if a card books for 2600 in nrmt, the vg price will be $200. but if it books for $2400, the vg price is $100. This also lumps relatively easy cards like the minor leaguers in the same price at much tougher cards (suggs, grants, ford (white cap)...and doesannoying things like equalize the ford white cap and ford dark cap...but makes AP Leifield and WA Latham worth twice as much as the slightly different counterparts. Overall I think the new system of pricing does a much poorer job of reflecting the scarcity differences between the cards. What doeseveryone else think? If only they would listen to people who know what they are talking about...t205 is a very odd set with some very tough variations, single prints, oddities and they completely missed the mark on this one. LOL I say that in jest, as the 10K (plus printing) that it would cost to make someone the full time curator of OBC info might be a bit high, however it is becoming clear that the guides are doing more of a disservice now than they ever have. Granted, my Beckett #1 (the book from the 70's, not the magazine) is a little worn and seems to have been passed up by the times (such as that $5000 T-206 Wagner) but I doubt that it contained much more mis-information than its modern counterparts. There has been so much study and research done within the OBC itself (both published and unpublished) that we could without a doubt do a more complete job than the current guides, and while that is without a doubt, a mark of pride for the group, it's a shame that the guides don't seem to be as detailed. I suppose the moral of the story is to check with the group before believing the guides, at least as far as the old stuff is concerned. One other point I would like to make. I am sitting here with a strange sense of the blahs. I am very much beginning to feel priced out of the hobby. I have been focusing on strip cards and other oddballs over the last few years as it has become obvious that my pre-war T and E card sets will probably remain incomplete unless there is a huge collapse in the market. Ten years ago used to buy T and E cards for $5 a pop as fast as I could find them. That would of course include minor HOFers. Now it seems that my ability to find others has dropped to zero. And while I, at one time, had hundreds of early dupes, they have been scattered in an attempt to complete the sets I have been working on, and there seems to be no source for reasonably priced dupes I need some Mello Yello. Perhaps that will perk my day up : ) Cards going out this week for the first time in a month! ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com ================= To: Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2007 07:23:04 -0700 From: "Tammy Gyselinck" Subject: Vancouver Show BlankThis past weekend was an event for me as I haven't been to a card showin probably 13 years. Yes you read it right 13 Years lol!!!! After a 6 hour drive I made it to Vancouver and the Croatian Cultural Center where I wasto meet Grant and Rick Lyons for touring the tables and trading. The show itself was pretty exciting for a guy like me with varied lists and a lot tohit. But for the more advanced collector it would have been a total bust. I came away from the dealers with a goodly amount of hits to all eras... noshiny stuff but some late 70's back to 57. The best table at the show as far as cards go had just vintage but the dealer harkened back to the shysters I remember from the heyday (1990's). What a jerk!!!! Rick and I diligently searched his table and came up with many hits to a few sets but came awaywith very little as his prices were outlandish and his attitude was worse. His poor wife was left most of the time to mind the table absolutely clueless about cards but a nice lady just the same :) The best part of the eventwas a table with a strategy loll. Most of the gazillion cards were stackedin top loaders.... vintage mixed with shiny etc. Grant had already left soRick and I spent almost an hour sifting through the bargain table and cameaway with some good card board. After the show Rick and I walked back to my vehicle and shared some card board on the tail gate before heading off onour separate directions. Rick is a heckuva a guy with some neat cards and stories. Thanks for taking the time to come Rick I enjoyed our meeting!!!! Next it was off to chez Grant and Jenny's. What a treat!!!! I haven't been able to do anything like this in a long long time and I was just a wee bit nervous. Grant and Jenny welcomed me in their home like a long lost friend and made me feel totally at ease. If you have never been up to the Vancouver show you have to come.... not for the cards but to meet Grant and hear his stories about card, Billy Hoeft, OBC, life, work and friendship. It was great. I drove down to the Redford Card show and did not get lost. I got to spend a few hours going through boxes of baseball cards and spend some quality time with some quality guys. I picked up some hits to my wantlists & found a few cards for others. I filled up on good food I could eat with my fingers while watching 4 football games simultaneously and BSed with some of the best BSers around. Once I got home I spent the evening sorting cards and crossing off numbers on my checklists. Of course I kept a close eye on the auction that Andy Cook ran flawlessly. After all bids were in I discovered that I was a big auction winner while honoring one of OBC's finest. All that fun and my wife didn't get even get mad at me for being gone most of the day then coming home and ignoring her for the rest of the day. Of course bribing her with an All American Burger from East Side Mario's helped. And the bonus was, she couldn't eat all the burger so I had a little snack before bed. So, as stated above, what a great day! Now on to my FOOT By the time I arrived at the VFW Hall in Redford, Mark "Snake" Talbot, Mike "Motor Mouth" Rich and Ron "Nomad" Perry were already hunkered down before boxes of card board at our favorite dealer, Mike Sandles table. After the pleasantries were exchanged along with a few pieces of cardboard, I found a chair and commenced a hunting. As usual my search was calculated and concise as I homed in on 58's, 72's and my HOM/HOF set. As I am searching, "Snake" is screaming into my left / deaf ear. I just nodded my head and kept on hunting. I'm not sure what I agreed to, but he's not getting my Charlie Maxwell RC no matter what. Once again I forgot my wantlists, but I still plucked numerous cards out of the boxes. Before long, John "no nick-name" McLaughlin showed up and more pleasantries were exchanged as he handed me cardboard that I could tell from the bouquet was vintage 1958. John then wandered down the table in search of cardboard and a FOOT member that could hear him. After a while my recently turned 61 year old bones told me to get up and move around, so I roamed around a few tables picking up some UV oddball Tigers stuff. Moments after I returned to Sandles table, Mike "da newbie" Mroz shows up on his way home from the airport. Unfortunately he couldn't stay long because he was expected at home. I shoulda told him to take home an All American Burger from East Side Mario's home and every thing would be cool. It was good to see Mike again, however briefly. His appearance brought the official FOOT attendance to an even dozen odd characters. Eventually I finished up my search as my appestat kicked in to remind me that my last sustenance other then my Starbucks coffee was oatmeal at 6:30am. I tried to browse the cards in the glass cases, but when the hallucinations started I knew it was time to nudge Mike and Mark out the door. Ron and John were also ready for some nourishment so we all three stood over Mark trying to send telepathic messages to his hypothalamus. We didn't know he forgot his cell phone, so we couldn't get through. Eventually we three left while those two did whatever it is that they do at closing time. Amazingly Mark did his impression of Jeff Gordan and pulled his green machine in the parking lot as we we heading for Mario's front door. Ok, I know it's getting long, I'll pick up the tempo for the two of you who are still with me. Mark left the Show with Mike's briefcase, Mike discovered he didn't have his briefcase, went back to the VFW where Mike Sandles said What briefcase? One Mike smiled, the other Mike didn't. Mean while four of us got two tables, five various appetizer trays, drinks of choice and strange looks from the waitress. Mike arrived and said he called Mark's cell phone but Mark didn't answer. Mark told Mike he didn't have his cell phone with him, hell John, Ron & I coulda told Mike that. We ate, talked when Mike wasn't, greeted Mike's friend Mark, watched football, listened to Mike, ordered more appetizers, watched Mark ignore Mike, exchanged the empty peanut bucket for a full one from another table bid our farewells and we left. One of the many reasons why I love OBC. Great stuff. Got my sovereign back T206 from Mac Wubban today with a 50 Bowman surprise--Thanks! Secondly I recently won a lot of 1947 Tip Top bread cards. I already had nine or ten tiptons from a lot I won years ago at a local auction. Well the paper is different between the two lots--so I am wondering if you might look at your Tip Tops and let me know how the paper on your cards has aged--is it gray or reddish? Or maybe both--but I am presuming one is from an old reprint set? Anybody know of any old reprint sets? Fritsch or someone else? Guess I will have to take out my printers loop and check the dot structure of the photos. I know I sent a few of you type cards that may be reprints (Andy and Chuck)? Lastly (and I know this is getting long) I was thinking of humorous cards--Landrum and Raymond of the unbuttoned pants and others immediately come to mind. But I was also chuckling about the 1964 Philadelphia football Cleveland Browns photos (and Yes I know this is Old Baseball). Every Browns photo is taken on some sort of parking lot or basketball court with a chain link fence in the background--and behind the fence, a classic pink cadillac. As I had been told, there is a quick recovery from the procedure. Although I am not to drive for 3 days, nor walk stairs (I live in a colonial), I could go back to work. I will actually take tomorrow off to rest and expect to go back on Thursday with 1 of my staff members picking me up and dropping me off. To just about everyone's amazement, I do not have any blockages. That was the good news. The "bad" news, was that I have an abnormal heart, as if anyone who knows me did not already know that. I guess they will give me more details on that later. Upon getting home, I actually made a call and was put on speaker for an hour so I could give my input to a committee for the food bank I volunteer at. So evidently I am fine. Thank You to all who wrote me to give me encouragement before this procedure as I was somewhat nervous. Other than soreness where the tube was inserted through the groin, I feel fine. For those that know me, they know I am so hairy, that I prove the theory of evolution. They had to shave my chest to hook up the leads for the EKG plus my lower belly, upper legs and groin. Talk about feeling exposed. Not having any modesty, I was not bothered much by this, but I can imagine a lot of people having trouble with the preparation for the procedure. At least the nurses this time did not do designs when shaving my chest. Even more fortunate, it is not shorts weather, as having my legs shaved almost to the knees looks really funny, along with the belly. I am not looking forward to all the itching of hair coming back in the areas they shaved. It will be rather inappropriate to scratch myself in certain areas in public. I did use the word "dumb." Putting a manager like Torre on a performance based assessment program embarrassed him and probably forced his hand in a direction away from the Yankees. If that is what they intended to do, then I would say it was classless; but since I can't read people's minds, I just call it dumb. To Torre, I don't think it was the money. I think it was the fact that they were treating him like a child. As Mike Francesa said yesterday on the FAN, do they think he hasn't been trying to win in the postseason? Why does he need a motivational contract? The Yankees don't seem to understand what he has accomplished over the years. As an obsessive Red Sox fan, I never thought I would be here defending Torre; but I have to admit that his approach to managing the Yankees has been close to perfect. Why should he have to deal with this kind of crap at his age and with his accomplishments? Goes to show you that money can't buy everything. The Yankees have been unable to buy the wisdom to see that they already had what was probably the best manager in baseball. Just to name a couple, I feel that Joe has become too hesitant to make changes and too loyal to his veteran players. One classic example was the 1st base problem, which went onall season and was never solved. I didn't understand, and I still don't understand why he would never give Shelley Duncan a full shot there. I think in the overall picture Torre's a little overrated. What has he done with the other teams he's managed? Not much. Before his Yankee days, his managerial record was pretty well below .500 if I'm not mistaken. He won his WS titles with the Yanks with teams largely built on Buck Showalter's watch, and hasn't won And I think it's a shame that Terry Francona's first 3 questions in his ALCS press conference yesterday were about Torre and the Yankees. I would respecfully submit that any of those guys, and really any good veteran manager, would have been out there demanding that the umpires suspend the game due to unplayable conditions. Bob makes some good points, especially about the sample size. Anything canhappen in a 5-game series. I disagree however, that he is the glue holding the team together. It's my objective opinion that Joe has lost his edge, and it was time to make a change. Could they have handled the process better? Absolutely, they could have and they should have. I feel forever indebted to all of you. Funny thing being paralyzed... I just lay wherever I've been set. I can see the binder which contains my cards across the room, but I cannot get it unless I ask for it. Then I have trouble turning the pages, but my left hand is improving. The other day my pointer finger started moving about 3"...so now I can move 3 fingers on that hand a little bit. I type with a splint on my right pointer finger one letter at a vtime. Kind of sucks because In used vto type 90WPM... ah well I gotta deal with it. I am semi lucky in my state of paralysis though. If the stroke had decided to settle two vertebrae up I wouldnt be able to move my arms and I would have to breathe with a machine the rest bof my life. I've got a semi good sense of humor about it though. I already bought a superman costume for halloween. Not bad taste considering my situation. My entire body from the nipples down is completely numb. I get phantom pains in my legs and feet, primarily they feel like they are on fire. Docs gave me a drug called neurontin fore those, and it works pretty good. The muscle spasms in my body are the worst though. They are not painful, but it is like my whole body has the hiccups nonstop unless I take heavy doses of muscle relaxers, and that only partially helps. Valium seems to work the best, but none of the docs want to give me anyt because it is "addictive". Have to obtain it on the black market. I had some drugs in my system when this happened (just pot and klonopin), so all the docs think I'm a "drug seeker". . What can I do? No insurance, no disability checks either. I just lay in bed at mom and dads house 85% of the time, which is a heavy burden on them, both being 60 and all. Very embarrassing when it comes to sponge baths and bowel movements..., plus the urinary catheter that is in 100% of the time (at least I cant feel it). Then I gotta watch out for bed sores... those can get very nasty from the pictures that I've seen. The stomach muscles required to have a good cough do not work, and I find myself accidenty inhaling my saliva and beverages. Gotta watch out for that because it can lead to pnumonia very easily. When I MUST vcough we do a "quad cough" where I cough as hard as bI can, while somebody presses my belly at the same time. I learned that when they took me off of the breathing machine and my left lung was collapsed due to a bad case of pnumonia. One sadistic doc told me that they were either going to give me a tracheostomy or put me back on the breathing machine. I REFUSED. They DID have to do 3 bronchoscopies (knock me out and put a camera in my lung and scrape the crap out), as well as put a catheter down my nose into my lung vsometimes to suck out the crud when I really couldn't breathe. Anyhow, those procedures as well as quad coughs got me better. Screw putting a hole in my neck... no effin' way. I am sure a lot of you are wondering... my penis does still work. Only goes to show that it DOES have a mind of its own. Now I gotta find a fat lonely canadian chick willing to marry me and take care of me... that way I can be a citizen and have the socialized health care that canada provides. I love those canuks and their politics. Nobody seems to have a problem with canada. America seems to be the bad guys in the state we're in, I hate to say. Time to leave politics out of this. Sorry guys. So yeah, I'm pretty much a stump with a good head on my shoulders. A 27 year old infant if you will. I'm just glad that my arms work. My triceps are very weak and my forearms have no muscles whatsoever. The bottom half of my arms and parts of my hands have no sensation either. You should see my legs... they look like a mummies legs. Woe is me. Please dont take this message the wrong way, as if I'm bitching about my nproblems... He claims he still wants to manage. Where else is he going to get an offer anywhere close to what he got from the Yankees??? True, it is unusual to see someone in sports to get there base salary cut, but it would still have made him the highest paid manager to baseball. Being the highest paid, as well as the highest payroll, the expectations are that they will win. So if they do what is expected, he would actually get a pay raise. I have had incentive based pay before, where some of the incentives were out of my control (think injuries for Torre). Not a great feeling, but something I had to deal with. Is a paycut for not delivering the expected results unjustified? As for only being 1 year with a team option, do you think the Yankee players, who are so strongly supporting him, would not play for him, just because his contract is only 1 year? He only had a contact for this year, when this season started and they rallied to make the playoffs. Plus, how long before this current group of Yankees is broken up? Rivera, Posada, Giambi, Rodriguez, etc., could all be gone now, and if not, in the next year or 2. Handled well, of course not. It all started with Steinbrenner opening his mouth during the playoff series. Had he not said anything, and this played out the same, would people feel differently? I think so. A Star Trek fan at the card shop told me that Barry Bonds is not the all time home run leader but Mr. Spock of the planet Vulcan is with 800 home runs. He said Mr. Spock hit 800 career home runs when he was playing for a team called the Mind Melders on Vulcan. He even said there is a card in the Skybox "Star Trek The Original Series" set from the 1990's that shows Spock hitting his 800th home run. It is card # 105. He said it is the card that major league baseball doesn't want you to know about. He said the card is much sought after on Vulcan because it was produced by a company on Earth and is very rare there. In case you are bored with this nut's story by now I have the Skybox Star Trek set with that card # 105 and I asked the guy what card would he trade me in return for the "Spock 800th home run card"? He traded me a 66 topps Mantle for a card of little or no value- a Skybox Star Trek card from the 1990's. He said he could sell the Spock 800th home run card for diamonds and gold on Vulcan. I didn't ask him how he was able to travel to another solar system. In case you are still with me the guy says he wants more of the Spock 800th home run cards and I didn't have any. He told me he would trade me a Bench rookie card if I could get him another Spock card. So anyone here need a 68 topps Bench rookie card? Just send me this card pictured in the link below and I will trade the guy for the Bench rookie and send it to you. After I trade him another Spock 800th home run card for the Bench let's see what he offers for another Spock card. I told him i don't think Spock's home run record would be recognized here because it looks like Spock is not using a regulation size bat: http://tinyurl.com/34qlb8 ================= To: Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2007 19:03:10 -0700 From: "Tammy Gyselinck" Subject: reference needed BlankHi Everyone Just wondering if anyone has dealt with a guy named Doug Pederson... seems like a good guy but who knows right. Valacak" Subject: 1933 Goudey I have decided to add this set to the wantlist. I actually made this decision a few months ago, when I added the 36 Goudey set. I read one of George Vrechek's articles describing some of the earlier tobacco sets. I settled on starting the 36 set, but in teh back of my mind, I knew I wanted to go after that 33 set. Naturally, the Ruth's and Gehrig cards present some concern. George made a great point in his article. The set is much more attainable if you don't pursue the big hitters. I am going to list them in the set, along with the Lajoie. I have always wanted an early Ruth card. If I am ever able to obtain any of them, that will be considered a bonus. So, after picking up a nice 31 card starter set that included a Joe Cronin, I am ready to list this set. I do have one card available for trade - #8, Roy Johnson of the Red Sox. I would love to trade this guy for any card in this set. ED - bored in Bawlmer ================= Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2007 20:12:35 -0400 To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "John Collins" Subject: Hammer sighting in NC! Just returned from the groundbreaking ceremony of Winston-Salem NC's new downtown ballpark where I was fortunate enough to hear and catch an in-the-flesh glimpse of the guest speaker, one Mr. Hank Aaron. The Winston-Salem Warthogs are a class A Carolina League affiliate of the White Sox, and are getting a new ballpark downtown that will be ready for the 2009 season. The "Hawgs" (and a long history of other minor league affiliates) have played in charming but increasingly dilapidated Ernie Shore field since 1956. The effort to build the downtown stadium seems to be part of the increasing efforts to improve minor league baseball in NC, and comes on the heels of the nearby city of Greensboro doing essentially the same thing for the Grasshoppers a couple of years ago. Anyway, the main attraction of course tonight was Hammerin' Hank, who appeared courtesy of some contact or another (Hank owns a Krispy Kreme franchise and KK is headquartered here in Winston...guessing that had something to do with it). Though Hank was on crutches (never got the story on that one) he was in strong voice and gave a brief speech about the value of the ballpark to the community. He also seemed displeased that the Red Sox had won the World Series again :-) Somewhat to my surprise, he did not mention playing here briefly in the early 1950's as a member of the negro league Indianapolis Clowns. Anyway, that was the highlight of my evening tonight, along with getting to see my 14 month old daughter enjoy fireworks for the first time. Though most of what I saw of Hank was on the jumbo-tron they had brought in, I did get a good glimpse of him only a couple of yards away as he left in his police escorted SUV. Add that one to the list of celebs I've now seen in Winston-Salem (the others being President Bush, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and comedian Darrell Anyway, a story I had to tell...one day I can tell my grandchildren that I was on hand to hear the great Hank Aaron speak!
