I actually spoke to him once, when I was helping a dirtbag who shall remain nameless put together the pricing for Current Card Prices magazine and he was real helpful. He had a Baseball Hobby News (or perhaps Baseball Card News) column in the 1980's for a while and was going to work on a big project with Buck Barker that was scotched for obvious reasons when Barker passed away. I figured he kind of burned out on the hobby, which was confirmed by Keith's post. Still, his remaining E&V collection must be monstrous. The 61 Dick Farrell card that Ray mentioned gave me fits though. I couldn't find one anywhere and I particularly remember an eBay lot always coming up in my searches that had 9 Phillies cards pictured, but the seller noted that the lot was only 8 cards because guess which one was missing? I had easily seen more of the Stobbs and Estrada cards at shows than the Farrell when I was looking for all three. still need only the first two I mentioned to complete my set simply becauseI'm not ready to fork over $100 each for them yet. The card that's testing my sanity now is the 1963 Nellie Fox variation without the bat showing. The Jello card from the same year is batless, so I originally thought it might be an error in the SCD. I did run across one on eBay that confirmed it's existence - however, it was pictured as part of a near set that included Mantle and a couple of the scarcer short prints. The lot went for well over $200, which I was tempted to bid on just for the one card I needed - so maybe there's still some sanity left in me, since I resisted bidding. I can't say I found any difficulty with any of the cards in the 1962 set, even tougher variations... which is probably why it's the only Post Cereal set I've completed so far. I broke down at one of the Nationals a couple years ago and paid a little extra for the last few I needed. I finished the set with a Clemente (blue lines) at a Ft. Washington show from 707 Sportscards of all places - even at $40 I thought it was a steal at his table. I thought I was going to luck into a bunch of Post/Jello SP's a couple days ago, but apparently I wasn't the only one paying attention. Check out the bidding on lot (290022390757). With a couple hours left, it was under $30. The lot had scans of the cards taken from a distance, but from what I couldtell, there was an Aspromonte (Jello), Versalles (Jello), Billy Williams (Jello) and Frank Thomas (Post) from 1963, as well as a 1962 Joey Jay with blue lines. There were also a couple other minor SP's in the 35 card lot - it sold for just over $200 and I wasn't even close to being the runner up bidder. So much for sneaking away with something... Two days off in a row and I get to sit inside and watch the rain come down. Then I get to return in time for inventory, which was a huge pain the last time when I didn't have two days off in a row beforehand. On top of that, the computer (or some brain dead manager) ordered a couple hundred cases of sale items which will add on to my work unless we somehow manage to get waves and waves of customers to buy it all. That's going to be even more difficult when it'll probably sit in the back room all weekend, since I'm not to display it. I can always hope my part-time helpers will do it... even though think they need help tying their shoes. Thanks for letting me vent a little. Since not all of you subscribe to the UV server, I wish to again express the deep gratitude myself and my family continue to feel for your thoughts, prayers and support following the death of my son. Your generosity in responding to the DZK Memorial Fund went well beyond the actual contributions providing a certain distraction from our pain and a measure of joy within the profound sadness. Not only will those contributions help to send needy children to Hockey Camp, it also gives our family additional meaning and purpose. I said all that, to say this. I indicated that I would provide you with updates regarding the children who were sent to camp via the Scholarship fund. We had hoped to send our first child to camp this past summer. In fact I had contacted Red Berenson's U of M Hockey School and reserved a session in late July. Arrangements had been made through the Director of Coaching at Iceland Arena to select a Scholarship recipient. Then came a call from the Hockey School. It seems that the School can only receive money from Scholarship Funds for certain age groups. Several conversations in legal language ensued with the bottom line being that the sessions for the age group in question were earlier in the summer. So, as per requested, we will be in contact with the U of M Hockey School early next spring to arrange to send our first Scholarship recipient off to Ann Arbor. Thank You again and always! An example is on last week's card store bid board i won a 54 Topps Warren Spahn for $1.25.I am afraid if i looked up the Beckett value of the card i might of found out what the card is priced at and not have bothered to bid on it because i can't pay anywhere near the Beckett price. Another example was there was a Morrell Meats Duke Snider on the card shop bid board a few weeks ago.I asked several of my friends who were there what they thought it was worth and how much they were going to bid on it.They all replied the card is worth too much and they were not going to even try to win it.I ended up winning it for $1.75 because everyone else looked up its value and got scared off bidding on it- Linda ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2006 18:07:26 +0000 From: hoot-owl@comcast.net Subject: King of the oddballs It is finally official--- LINDA FITAK NAMES MIKE RICH "KING OF THE ODDBALLS." It'd be nice to post a link on the message board appease the folks who surf on in looking to find out what the 1980 Dave Stieb they just found in their attic is worth." So I took a quick peek at the site. only is a 1980 Dave Stieb not in the database yet, but unless you've found an already slabbed PSA 9 in your attic, the site isn't going to help out the casual (or non-)collector that typically stumbles onto our site looking for pricing A link for our members to use is laughable, since some wouldn't pay $9.99 for any card in their collection, never mind a monthly fee to tell them how their 'investments' are doing. Most of the PSA, SGC and other graded card holders I have are in little pieces in the trash can near my desk. Most likely the info site is offering is for cards that graded above a 2 anyway. I didn't botherto even try the free trial offer. As a test, I searched for cards of Dusty Rhodes. There was only one pictured card out of the 9 that came up in the search results. (One was from a 1928 PCL Exhibit set, which was clearly 25 years before Dusty played unless it was baby photos from a clairvoyant manufacturer). Granted, some of the cards in the list were scarce or regional issues - but no pic for 1956 Topps? Another thing that turned me off was misspellings in the set descriptions. I'm not the spelling police and I'm not saying I even use a spell check before posting these notes, but if you're going to promote your website and make it look professional, at least make sure you're using proper grammar and spelling the words right. In three minutes I found at least 4 things that didn't sit right with me: " Topps changed there style"... "Card #265-352 is scarce." [I'm sure there was only one made withthe hyphen on it]... " Topps issued this set in 1956 with out [two words] any competition from Bowman." ...and " Topps went old school on this set". A lot it looks like it was written up by an eighth grader pressed for time (if I can bold enough to give them that much credit). I was not impressed with the setup of the site and they'd have a LOT of work to do before I'd even consider linking it. As an AC member, I think you've got a pretty good idea of how I stand if the topic does get submitted to us. Let's face it, price guides are the reason we all don't have complete sets back through the 50's. If there had never been price guides, there never would have been "investors", only collectors. I know, I'm sounding naive, but remember the 60's? People collected cards without price guides, the only difference was that the collectors were ALL people who loved baseball and baseball cards. It's the first Sunday of NFL football. As some of you may know, I have season tickets to the Patriots and while many here have a passion for baseball, with me it's secondary to my love of the gridiron. Tomorrow I'll be making my 12th consecutive trip to Foxboro for the Pats home opener. However, for the first time over that period, I'll be making the trip without my two friends that I share the season tickets with. For some unexplained reason, they informed me that they had sold their tickets. I guess with no Superbowl championship to celebrate, it wasn't worth going? Sheesh. Keeping with the football theme... The arrival of a football lot from eBay got me thinking. My 1964 Topps set still needs over 60 cards for completion out of 176 in the set, so you'd figure a group of 50 or so would yield a few hits, right? Well, the lot crossed off exactly TWO cards from my list. What makes matters worse is that while going through the binder, I noticed a couple book keeping errors and ADDED two more numbers to the list! So now I'm right back where I started the day. I know the set is littered with short prints - does anyone know where I can get a comprehensive list of those numbers? Or should I just look at my wantlist and say, "yeah, those are the ones..."? I've got another, much larger group of 64's on the way, but my fear is that I'll end up with three cards of every player and be left with the same 60 cards on my list (the lot on the way didn't have the numbers in it listed either). This set is proving to be worse than the following year(tallboys), which at least 2/3 of the set was short printed it seemed. Has anyone tried to buy 1949 or 1950 Bowman baseball on eBay recently? Has there been some discovery of 24k gold strands lacing these cards that I haven't heard? There were a couple big groups of these on eBay (over 100 cards each) that really didn't seem like anything special until the bidding started. I could see if there were a lot of stars and hi # '49's/low # '50's, but these are selling for $6-7 each, even in lower grades. Even my one year old SCD doesn't list them for that much in VG. Has the market for these changed that much? It wasn't that long ago that I was picking up 1952 Topps group lots for $3/card and those listed for two or three times the smaller, earlier cards. I'm taking a week vacation starting next Saturday. Something tells me that I'll really need a break from work by the time that rolls around. Inventory didn't go as badly as I originally feared, but I still ended up alone in the dairy chest counting milk after everyone ran out the door. I'd like to meet the genius who scheduled the inventory right after a holiday. At least they took a step in the right direction and scheduled it on a Wednesday night. Normally I wouldn't have any stock to put up that night (the only night of the week I don't get a load). However, Labor Day threw everything out of whack and to top that off, I was given two nights off in a row prior to the inventory. We have an outside group come in to take the counts, but I'm still responsible for listing everything that ISN'T on the sales floor - a task that is doubly hard when you have a couple part time coworkers that work like slobs. With the cancellation of the Ft. Washington show this month, I find myself in a somewhat awkward position - being home to celebrate my birthday. This is one I'm not particularly looking to celebrate either, as it's the big 4-0. So is it really downhill from here or does it just mean I can pick up more speed as I prepare to crash into old age? Actually, I don't like the way either of those options sound. Anyone who's read this far deserves some kind of prize. Unfortunately, all I have handy on my desk are a bunch of 1964 FB (apparently all non-SP's). If you're collecting this set, send me your list and I'll take a look. Thanks for reading. Now those who are younger might disagree but what do those youngsters know - right. Guys like myself who have past the 50 mark might disagree but then it could be contended that as we reach the "golden age" some of us are battling with senility (Heck-I'm a constant sufferer of CRS). So relax Ken, enjoy each day the Lord provides and live it like you were 21 years old again and you will not have to worry about whether your 40, 45, 51 or 80. ENJOY your upcoming day, I'm sure you could pester some OBC'er in the area to make it more memorable. I too have found getting large or even small lots of early post war cards to be more and more expensive. Bowman's from `48 & `49, Topps from `51, `52 & `53 are no longer cheap on eBay in any condition. I still place bids but do not win nearly as many as I have in the past. Recently I went on a `52 Topps binge and spent on average $4-$5 per card, a few bucks more than I use to spend. So the market is changing for these vintage treasures - even in OBC condition. As for football - when you consider the fact that our Lovable Detroit Kitty's (Lions) have not won a championship since 1957 and seem to perpetually put out a product that is disappointing at best - it is hard to be a "diehard" NFL fan in this part of the country. I like the sport, watch it on TV, play in the fantasy leagues, but have not spent a dime on a ticket in many years (they still sell out year after year - go figure). Just can't get excited about it in these parts. Now to discuss trading cards and the topic of `64 Topps football SP's. Ken, according to my Beckett Bible for Football (2002 version) the following are listed as SP's: 1964 TOPPS FOOTBALL SP's 1, 4, 6, 7, 9, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 34, 38, 41, 42, 44, 45, 46, 47, 52, 53, 54, 56, 58, 64, 65, 67, 68, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 83, 84, 85, 86, 91, 94, 96, 99, 102, 104, 105, 106, 107, 109, 111, 112, 114, 119, 120, 122, 124, 127, 132, 137, 139, 140, 142, 144, 146, 147, 148, 149, 150, 152, 154, 160, 161, 162, 165, 167, 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 174, 176. It seems like you were correct Ken, of the (71) cards listed on your want list for the set (60) of them are SP's from the set. The non-SP's you need include; Buonicotti, Lamonica, Bell, Maynard, Alworth and Hadl, leaving you with only 5 commons and a few of those are RC commons. I seem to be having the same issue with my set. I need (81) cards to complete the `64 set of which (53) of them are SP's, since you asked for a posting of `64 wants I am providing you with my want list. Of course you need (48) of the same cards so the likelihood that any of these are in your stack on the desk is bleak but here goes any way: MARK TALBOT's 1964 TOPPS FOOTBALL LIST 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 27, 29, 30, 31, 33, 34, 44, 45, 46, 52, 53, 54, 56, 58, 64, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 72, 75, 76, 78, 82-unmarked, 90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 101, 105, 106-upgrade, 107, 111, 112, 113, 114, 116, 119, 121, 124, 126, 127, 128, 132, 135, 137, 138, 140, 143, 144, 148, 149, 150, 152, 153, 154, 159, 160, 161, 162, 163, 165, 167, 168, 169, 171, 172, 174, 176. To all in OBC land - BE WELL!!! REGARDS ---------------------- MARK -------------- Original message -------------- From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi all, Tomorrow (Sunday) is almost like a holiday for me. I also get emails from people looking for value information and tell them to try their library or a large book store to check out price guides. It would be fun to do our own price guide that prices "graded" cards between poor and unrecognizable. I have a 1949 Bowman Musial that I would categorize as "Unrecognizable" on the front and "bearly legible" on the back. On a1 to 100 scale with 100 being poor it is probably a 25. However we might spend way too much time on such an endeavor and have way too much fun arguing whether a crisp round punched hole in a card is less valuable than a series of tack holes. That's fine for now, because it still somewhat serves its purpose. T.J. Valacak has been very helpful (and patient!) in pointing out a flaw in the old method of updating them. The old method relied on a strange programming short-cut technique, assuming that a certain comment line was properly in place - but the method itself sometimes got the comment line messed up, which would cause the last line of your want list to repeat once for every time you update it. Long story short, I believe I've identified and fixed the problem so that it won't happen again. If anyone notices any strange behavior of the old want list update program in the upcoming week, please let me know immediately. The cool thing about this is that the program was written in the Perl language, and I really don't understand Perl, but was able to follow the spaghetti logic and make it work anyway. The old method of updating the want lists was written by Bill Ebbing many years ago. Personally, I don't like the administration. It depended on a "master" account with a probably unknown encrypted password. In fact, all of the passwords are fully encrypted. If you're using the old system, and you forget your password or have any other related problems with your want list, my team might not be able to help, or at best we'll need to set you up with a new account with a default password that's difficult or impossible to change. Documentation probably existed at one time, but it's nowhere to be found. In short, it's a mess, but for the time being, it works. We have a new method of creating and maintaining want lists using the OBC database, which has a number of advantages over the old method: 1) Can update individual sets by checking or un-checking on a full-screen checklist with card names for over 150 vintage sets available. 2) Forget your password? You can click a button to have your password emailed to your email address on file. Your account is just your first and last name, and if you forget that, I don't know what to tell you. 3) Since the want list data is on a central database, we can soon move to online availables lists, which can quickly match up people who have cards with other people who need those cards. It's OBC's version of "Match.com"! This was an idea from Steve Rittenberg quite some time ago that could seriously revolutionize the way we "do business." The new wantlist facility is available on the Directory page, by clicking on the link "Create an online wantlist." Now would be a great time to check it out and offer any suggestions or constructive criticism. But suddenly these cards seem have reached the $3 to $4 range and even more if in better condition.I couldn't find ANY at the National for $1.- ================= Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2006 18:44:11 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Linda" Subject: Let's try the same thing with a lot of 1951's There is a lot of 1951 Bowmans also on ebay right now.Let's try the same thing with that lot.I am high bidder right now and let's see what it goes for- ebay # 270027700819 ================= To: "OBC-Ramblings" , Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2006 20:33:25 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Old Want List facilty has been fixed, new facility needs testers Wayne -- I tried to put the T202 set into it and ran into problems. For instance, I want three back variations for each T202 - can I just put the set in three times with a different comment to say which back each one is? Or does it gointo I think the idea is great, but more of us need to play with it. What happens if you get your list to the way you want it - how does this created one override the old one that we've been using (the Ebbing version)? Take Care, Geno ----- Original Message ----- From: Wayne Delia To: OBC-Ramblings Sent: Tuesday, September 12, 2006 5:45 PM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Old Want List facilty has been fixed, new facility needs testers Many of us still have our want lists on the OBC server. As a side note, I've gotten a couple (legit) messages from eBay in the last couple weeks stating that auctions I had bid on (and not won) were cancelled and the results were null and void, but I was getting the message just because I had bid on the item. As to relatives i have one but i am not too proud of him.Me, my father, and my grandfather were/are all devout Yankee fans.My father took me to a game when i was 5 and i saw the great Mick pound one in the upper deck in Yankee stadium. After Mantle retired i never again attended a major league game. Also every baseball fan in our family are devout Dodger haters too- 1963 would make any Yankee fan cringe at the mention of the Dodgers. Imagine my total embarrassement when i found out the dark secret in the family that my great grandfather's brother was an infielder for the Dodgers in the early 1900's.Ed Wheeler, apparently played for them in 1902 according to the one card i have been able to locate of him- a Target Dodger card # 851.I don't know of any others. Next i collect cards of players whose careers or lives are particularily interesting to me.One such player is Jim Thorpe. I collect any card of his.I read when i was a kid he was voted by some sports writers the greatest athlete of the 1st half of the 20th century. Also i think it was something that he was an Olympic gold medal winner and a professional baseball and foorball player too.I don't know of any other athlete who did that.Bob Hayes was an Olympic sprinter and a pro football player but not all 3 like Thorpe. Besides Thorpe having those distinctions another thing that struck me about him was that he had to give all his Olympic gold medals back and fought all his life to regain them.I think that is the saddest thing in American sports.I have read many times he was the greatest athlete of all time. Another interest of mine is cards of great Negro League players.I read books on the great players of the Negro Leagues and some of their amazing feats like Josh Gibson once hitting a ball out of Yankee Stadium and of course the most colorful legend player of all baseball- Satchel Paige. But i collect any modern card of any negro leagurer- not just Paige and Gibson. Cards i have been searching years for but have been unable to locate even a single card are the Retort Negro League Legends set of 100 cards each in a series 1 & 2 issued in the early 1990's.These cards are in the big SCD book on page 907 & 908 in the 2000 edition.I have searched at 3 Nationals and many local card shows and shops and still can't find a single card from that set.It is at the top of my wants at my OBC want list.Maybe someday i will finally find a card from 1 of the 2 sets. I might suggest the kids read books on baseball players and collect the ones which seem to personally interest them. I am also intregued with 19th century baseball because is seems part of a long lost past and the tobacco cards of that era are so rare and expensive. So i collect modern cards of players from that era because i sure can't afford Old Judges and Allen & Ginter baseball players. I particularily like the American Archives "Origins Of Baseball" boxed set of cards. This set covers the game up to 1899.So here i can get cards and the history of 19th century baseball. I enjoy including one of the cards from this set with just about all the cards i send out from members want lists. I was lucky enough years ago to find sealed boxed sets of the "Origins of Baseball" at a local discount store remainderd for a couple of dollars each. That same discount store had the boxed Topps Brooklyn Dodger archives set for a couple of dollars too and i broke down and bought a dozen.I have since sold all but 2 for a nice profit. The most important thing i would do for advising kids collecting is not to confine it to baseball cards.I would certainly emphasize non sports cards.Mass Media TV and movies are big influences on kids tastes and i would suggest collecting cards of favorite TV shows or films. First, my collecting goals were related to completing the sets from the years that I "saw" around me when I first caught the bug myself. Thanks to OBC, I completed 7 of these sets, which caused me to start on some others. First, I took on the previously unthinkable goals of the 59, 60, and 66 (birth year) Topps sets. I selected the 59 and 60 sets because I always thought they looked cool. I have since completed the 59 set. I also caught a serious bug and decided to start collecting prewar players with my last name "Sweeney" (there were primarily two (Jeff and Bill), but there are others in regional sets - not to mention the old judges or other sports players). This pursuit has been very fulfilling and interesting, mostly thanks to Ebay. So, after evaluating the above I came to a conclusion that the cards you should collect should have various traits. First, they should be cards that you would want even if they were not worth more than a nickel. In my opinion, anyone that got into this hobby to make some money - is not a true card hobbyist. I wish I could take a poll of the number of people that hopped into our hobby as investment, only to screw it up before leaving. I am sure that many of them are now doing something else that can be classified as a fade, while we traditionalist are still here holding down the fort. Next, any cards on a wantlist should be an obtainable goal (i.e. collecting Mantle cards would be a problem). Third, it must be something fun! Even if it a K-Mart card, if you get some joy out of it - go for it! I decided to let my son Wyatt choose for himself what to collect. He liked my brother's Ron Cey bobble head, which he identified as the Dodger 3rd baseman that is in and around my memorabilia and that I referred to as a hard working player that was fun to watch. Although Geno may have a disturbed memory of Cey as a Cub, he was also a DODGER. Plus he had the cool penguin nickname. Lastly, his cards are at semi-star prices. I do figure that Wyatt's Cey collection will evolve into something else, like the rest of us. To be Pat Sweeney In a message dated 9/14/2006 10:19:01 A.M. Pacific Standard Time, uthminsta@hotmail.com writes: Hey everyone I have been formulating an idea for a while now, and with a little push (in the form of some starter sets) from from OBC's own Kent Montgomery, I think I'm going to form a kids' collecting group with some of the boys (and perhaps some girls) from my church. Then I think we're going to use it in the community to see if we can get some other kids who want to join... but I'll let you know more details when I get there. For now, I just wanna do a little informal research. Would you all mind if I picked your brains a little? I would like some feeback in some specific areas... Okay, first question. HOW DO YOU COLLECT? Sounds simple at first, but not everyone has the same approach. I want to show these kids that any "formula" that they can come up with, they can collect that way, and I can help them get started. So I know most of us are set- builders, some also have a favorite player, some collect a favorite team. One of us has a son that collects one card of every catcher. That's a neat idea. My grandpa and I collected team cards. One guy collects every card made in 1990. There's someone who's working on a master set from the year they were born - which means all the parallels, inserts, etc (yeah, I know that's UV terminology, but it's someone's son, and they were born in 1995, I think). I collect everyone with 500 home runs in their career, 50 in a season, or 4 in a game. Someone could collect cards of the members of the 300 win club or 3000 hit club or any "club" for that matter. I'm also not the only one who collects every player with my same last name. It's a whole lot easier if your name isn't Smith or Jones... Someone collects the card numbered 5 in every set ever. Someone collects horizontal cards in primarily vertical sets. A couple guys are collecting 9 of a certain set, I guess so they can fill a sheet with each of the cards. Doesn't someone collect cards that show the player with their kids? How many of us collect cards of a player that was born or grew up in our hometown? Anyone collect cards of a Okay, I think I've made my point. Most people don't collect exactly the same thing. So... back to the question. HOW DO YOU COLLECT? And maybe I should restate it. What "parameters" do you use, what is your main "focus," what are your collecting guidelines? I'm awaiting your responses. Very impressive. I do have a bunch of comments pro and con which I'll detail below. First, let's start with what I currently do. I keep my wantlist in a word document on my PC (backed up to an external hard disk and a second PC). I update everyting in this wantlist, print it out when I go to shows. A few times a month I go to my wantlist on the OBC page, delete everything and copy in fresh my updated wantlist, (Ctrl/A, Ctrl/C in word and Ctrl/V on the web. This has worked fine for me. However, your application has a number of benefits including a real checklist. I just put my 56 Topps wanlist in your application and noticed that #31 is Hank Aaron. I have that card already! never would have picked that up on my own, unless someone sent it to me ;-) How embarassing! I think the biggest advantage to your application is the ability to do searches, assuming all (or many) of OBCers use the application. So, if I have an extra 1956 Topps Aaron I could easily do a query and see EVERYONE who needs that card. That would be so cool!!! I think the biggest drawback to your application would be the need to keep two seperate wantlists. One in Word and one on the web. Although this would be somewhat mitigated if it were possible to export into a local file which I could then format and print from. I notice the ability to have a "want" vs a "have" list. Can this be reversed? If I start a set and have 20 cards out of 660, I would start with a have list. However, over time I will add to the set and might want to change to a "need". I think in the interest of simplicity it would be better to keep everything a have, acting like a true checklist, you would only check the cards you have. To make this possible it would be necessary to have a "check all". So if I need 20 cards in a set, I could just check all and then just uncheck the ones I don't have. I think the only other issue is that some people may want to keep the basic text only checklist. Will they be forced to the new application? Also, the T206s do not have proper descriptions. Also, when I go to display my wantlist I just see the numbers. Couple of technical issues. When I created my 67 wantlist I got the following error message;Error running sql query: You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 's Rookies',' ','N','N','N',0,now())' at line 1 How wantlists are displayed need to be formated better, for example, when I go to look at my wantlist I see; 1967 Topps ( Condition, priority) begin is 0, changing to 1 150 Mickey Mantle begin is 1, hor_vert is , 239 AL Batting Leaders begin is 1, hor_vert is How will the search function work? I think that's it for now. -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: Wayne Delia > Many of us still have our want lists on the OBC server. As you all can probably guess from the subject line, Wayne vs. Northmont IS the Game Of The Week! According to this morning's Dayton Daily News: "The Wayne-Northmont game benefited from some last-day poll stuffing to overtake Tippecanoe at Greenon, 4,893 to 4,562. The difference was 232 votes on WHIO-TV's web site and just 94 on the DDN site." So a huge THANKS to everyone who took the time to stare at their computers for hours on end voting. It really paid off. When we had to leave for Friday night's game, the Wayne game was about 30 behind at whiotv.com, & I figured it was going to be tight. At the DDN site were were still down about 300 votes, so I was beginning to think, "well it was a great effort, but we might fall short". When we got home from the game, Wayne had jumped ahead on the WHIO site & continued to gain - and I started voting over & over on the DDN site. Eventually I went to bed after Wayne caught & passed the Tippecanoe game. Got up Saturday morning, and things were looking good - up by 200(!!!) on the WHIO site & by almost 100 on the DDN site. At 10 am, my multiple voting shortcut at the DDN site stopped working (we were up by 100 & I figured if the trick didn't work anymore for me, then no one else could vote more than once per hour either), & on the WHIO site the voting link had disappeared, so I had no clue what the vote total was. We had to leave for a parade (another band event) & didn't get back until 4 pm, at which time I checked - nothing posted. After an hour or two, the DDN vote total was on their website: we won that one by 99 votes (I don't know how they came up with a 94 vote difference), but still nothing on the WHIO site. This morning the results were in the newspaper. Without the terrific Wayne fans throughout the country - otherwise known as OBC and VCT - there was no way that this would have been possible - so THANKS on behalf of the Wayne Warriors! The book has numerous famous people recalling where they were & what they were doing when Thompson hit the HR & how it effected them at the time. The book reveals that the Giants stole the catcher's signs with a telescope from the their center field clubhouse & relayed the info via an electric buzzer. Branca found out about it a couple of years later but kept it to himself so that no one would accuse him of being a sore loser. The book also recounts how Thompson & Branca became celebs by appearing at baseball memorabilia shows together over the years & both signing the same baseballs as collector items. From this ongoing relationship over many years they became good friends Based upon the review the book sounds like a good read. ================= Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2006 21:49:44 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "jimbo777777" Subject: Good dealer experience Howdy folks, I'm not sure this guy would qualify as obc-friendly, but it was a good enough experience that I wanted to share it. At 12:06 this afternoon, I will officially turn 40 years old. Funny, but I feel the same as I did yesterday when I was still only 39. My parents are driving down from New Hampshire and my sister and I will celebrate 42 years of marriage for them. (I was born the exact same day as their 2nd anniversary). Contrary to any rumors out there, I will not need any help blowing out candles. Fire codes prohibit the lighting of that many candles in one place, so we're probably opting for just two: one in the shape of a four and the other a zero... if there's even a cake involved. I normally take this week off for vacation and get as far away from here as possible. However, the cancellation of the Ft. Washington show this month forced me to hang around. I took last week off instead and visited the Rochester (NH) Fair and my parents for a couple days. I also posted a couple things on eBay, since I had some extra time and a couple extra cards I'd been saving for a few months. Most of them are 48-49 Leaf dupes, but there's a couple tipton gems like a '55 Topps Mays and Berra and a '66 Funny Ring checklist and a 56 FB contest card if anyone's interested. The '55 high numbers still don't have any bids at 99 cents, but there's a bunch of people watching them. Thanks for the recent "super collector" compliments... I don't know if I would peg myself as one though. There's others in this group that have completed more obscure and difficult sets than I have. Most of my collection is all mainstream stuff, with basically no prewar outside of the T205 set. The fact that I'm trying to complete it with the same back is either silly or insane. I haven't decided which yet. Sure, I've completed all the Topps, Fleer, Bowman and Leaf sets from 1948-1980. Does that really make me a "super collector"? I've been fortunate enough to have access to lots of local shows and shops, plenty of disposable income (not having a wife, kids or any real vices like smoking or drinking) and loads of free time to devote to furthering my collection's progress. I'm basically doing the same thing I did when I was 10, only now I have a bigger allowance and the cards don't come in packs (or in mint condition)... at least not the ones I can afford to buy. Maybe I was a "super collector" 30 years ago? I still have the same dogged determination to finish sets... or maybe I've lost my mind over the years - another coin flip. Buckett did do an article about me a couple years ago, which proclaimed me an "Industry Expert". The article is available for download on my wantlist page in .pdf format (Adobe Acrobat). It was written just after the Rick Redpath auctions I hosted on eBay. One of the high bidders happened to be a writer for the rag... er, magazine and we got into an e-mail conversation about the group, the auctions I ran, OBC and my collection. It was after a few exchanges that the writer asked if he could print the story and asked me to send a photo to include with it. I don't know how collecting baseball cards became an 'industry' and most of my 'expertise' comes from hanging around with the rest of you nuts for ten years or so, but I kinda like that title better anyway. Well, I'd better get a nap in before going out to eat tonight. Thanks for reading this far and for putting up with all my mindless drivel all these years. I love to read, but for some reason (for which I often clench my fists and say GRRRRR) I am a very slow reader. So as I was saying, it's a good idea - I have many books I would be willing to send out to someone who could enjoy them before I would ever get a chance to. Right now I am reading Say Hey by Willie Mays. I've been reading it for some time, and actually part of my "slow reading" is that I don't usually have the time to sit down and enjoy it, until I'm just about to fall asleep Okay. I was thinking that it would be cool if someone could gather the information on which books are available from whom and post it, perhaps about once a month, in the Ramblings server. I WOULD BE WILLING TO DO THAT, WITH A LITTLE HELP. I would need the help of the current owner in the process of information compiling. You may wish to include some or all of this info: full title, author or authors, date of publication, number of pages, category (see below) and (if wanted) brief synopses for each book, or maybe just some kind of rating like one to five stars of something. Then with each book, it would list the current owner and OBCers could then go to the personal info page and email that person with a request. Here are some of the basic categories that we could use. Each sport would have to be separate, in my opinion, so I will stick with the one I know and love the most, baseball. Just off the top of my head, here goes: Baseball Biography / Autobiography Baseball CARD Resources Baseball Encyclopedic Resources (stats and stuff) Baseball Fiction general Non-Fiction may be grouped into some other categories if Event Histories (100 years of the World Series and such) Team Histories (stuff like Bronx Bombers, Gas House Gang) Or we could be a little bit more specific. Some that come to mind: Negro Leagues International Baseball Origins of the Game Hall of Famers, All-Stars, Rookies of the Year, etc. or the 500 Home Run Club (one of my favorite books) Minor Leagues Business of Baseball Well, what say you? This is obviously an idea which has generated a lot of interest. I'm willing to help out if I can. But I won't lose any sleep if you don't like my idea, or don't think it needs to be that involved... I just think it's one thing I can do to show my appreciation for a lot of people who have been generous with me! ================= Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2006 11:31:42 EDT To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: DaPatriot1@aol.com Subject: 65 topps question??? Hi! All, It's been a hectic last two months. While I was at the National at the end of July my wife had called me to tell me my father-in-law had to go into the hospital as he was ill. First, we thought it had something to do with his fall earlier in the summer. Anyway long story short he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Well, he passed away late August. The family is doing fine now. I have taken over the financial activities for my mother-in-law as my father-in-law took care of all the financial needs. My father-in-law was very old fashioned in ways. He would not write out a check unless he absolutely had to. So, he paid for everything in cash and he threw away his bills if they were paid. Unfornunately with him throwing away the bills and paying for things in cash I can't setup a budget for my mother-in-law but she is financially set for years to come. All the legal work is now completed. So, life is back to some resemblance of I've had little time for cardboard but will get back into action shortly. Thanks you are Well enough rambling... ================= Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2006 10:22:53 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: trufan999@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Slate Article: The Secret Lives of Baseball Card Writers From: To: Subject: Slate Article: The Secret Lives of Baseball Card Writers Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2006 10:29:19 -0400 sports nut The Secret Lives of Baseball Card Writers I worked for Topps and lived to tell about it. By David Roth Posted Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at 5:51 PM ET As a child, when I had what might be called a serious baseball card habit, I looked forward to a new year of Topps baseball cards in a way I looked forward to nothing else. In the way things happen when you're a kid, baseball, basketball, and football cards took on an outsized importance in my life. And then, in the way things happen when you're a slightly older kid, cards just stopped mattering to me. I forgot about them for 15 years. Topps became real to me again thanks to some basketball cards my roommate left around the apartment. Deep in the doldrums of underemployment, I started flipping through them while enjoying an afternoon beer. Inspired by the text on Vitaly Potapenko 's 2001 Topps card (his teammates had nicknamed him "Eddie Munster") and with a courage assist from Miller High Life, I sent Topps my r=C3=A9sum=C3=A9. I figured that would be the end of it, but I got an e-mail in response. They asked how I would describe my interest in and knowledge of sports; I answered "freakish/obsessive." I got an interview, and then I got the job. Starting a job at Topps was stressful. I was about to enter, as an adult, a place I'd always imagined as a gum-scented, Willy Wonkafied dream palace. Before my first day of work, I pictured packs piled in leaning towers, slides from long-ago Darryl Strawberry photo shoots, game-worn Mickey Tettleton jerseys. When I showed up, I found a standard corporate office: cubicles, recycled air, bad carpeting, worse lighting. There was plenty of candy=E2=94Topps makes Ring Pops , Push Pops , and Bazooka bubble gum=E2=94but few cards in sight. There was little indication that this place churned out baseball cards and not, say, bath mats. My job was to edit the text and statistics for the card backs. These came from a Virginia-based head writer named Bruce Herman (author of the Potapenko card that led me to Topps) and a Quebecois statistician named Nicolas Chabot, respectively. I did ordinary editor things=E2=94assigned text, edited it for accuracy and aesthetics, drew elaborate geometric doodles at meetings=E2=94but was buoyed by the fact that I was doing these a not-so-ordinary environment. While the text was inescapably repetitive, the stuff I edited was certainly better than the "Hector's hobbies are eating and sleeping" non sequiturs that made up the Topps backs of my youth. Today's cards top out at 400 characters (including spaces), or about 70 words, and usually take the shape of punchy feature articles. My favorite was a card for the St. Louis Rams' Harvard-educated backup quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick. The back text dealt with a question posed to him by his offensive line. Figuring that perhaps he'd covered this in Cambridge, they asked Fitzpatrick what would hurt more: getting kicked by a donkey or whipped in the face by an elephant's trunk. Fitzpatrick went with the elephant slap. Bruce provided a source, and I checked it. All true . At times like that, the job was something very close to fun. Tight deadlines created tension, but it's hard to stay stressed when your bosses are pestering you for 50 words about some punt returner's hobbies. Sadly, though, the same things that bothered me about previous corporate gigs were easy to find at Topps. Upper management was a distant, nepotistic network descending from a mysterious, largely invisible septuagenarian CEO. Below that, departments feuded with other departments. Middle managers skirmished in snarky, caps-locked e-mails CC'd to higher-ups. "Good mornings" seethed with passive aggression. My co-workers and I shared a sense that our contributions were undervalued. My job's irrelevance=E2=94I worked on the less glamorous back half of the card, you see=E2=94was confirmed through my absence from the card-distribution rolls. At Topps, the haves receive free boxes of each new product. The have-nots, like me, do not. When I asked for boxes of the products I'd worked on, I got brushed off. Eventually, I gave in and queued up at the company store along with copy editors from the quality-assurance department. I was frustrated not only because this wasn't what I'd expected=E2=94whoeven has company stores anymore?=E2=94but because a myth from my childhood got sullied. Baseball cards, it turned out, are not made in a card-cluttered candy land. Rather, they are created by ordinary men and women who are generally unawed by their proximity to a central part of American Neither trading cards nor "novelty candies" have been breaking any sales records recently. Consequently, Topps has banked increasingly on ultra-high-end trading cards. The company's most expensive "pack," the beautiful, autograph-laden Topps Sterling , comes in a cherry-wood box and costs $250 for five cards. While those cards make money=E2=94as, it should be said, do the basic $1.50 packs=E2=94the trading-card business has been more or less moribund for a decade. So, it wasn't a total surprise when I was laid off in July, effective I'm glad I got the chance to work at Topps, if only because it was fun to tell people at parties that "I'm in the baseball card business." My Topps experience also helped me remember why collectors collect. It's the hunt for what the brand managers call "white whale" cards. I know it's awfully literal, but mine is the Herman Melville card I wrote for Topps' Allen and Ginter set . That's a new product=E2=94scarce around the office, not sold in the company store, $5a pack in card shops=E2=94in which Gilded Age cultural figures mingle withthe A-Rods and Nick Puntos. Odd, I know, but I love the set. Before I left for good, I found what I'd been searching for. It was behind a locked door, which was itself behind an ordinary-looking backroom. I flipped the switch, and lights flickered on overhead, revealing a back-backroom awash in cards. Binders lined the walls, filled with every card in every Topps baseball and football set from the 1950s through the 1990s, all pasted=E2=94why?=E2=94to white three-hole-punch paper. To get to those shelves, I had to step on and over boxes brimming with loose cards and cards in bricklike 500-count vending boxes. And that was just the cards. A box fell off a shelf and baseballs autographed by Frank Robinson rolled out. Jerseys that were to have been cut up and inserted into "relic" cards gave one dusty corner the look of a chaotic locker room. A box of bats inscribed with the names of journeymen such as Geronimo Berroa and Ron Coomer sat in another. This back-backroom would not have looked like much to most people. I was relieved, though, to discover that the baseball card wonderland I'd dreamed of was somewhere in that office after all. David Roth is a writer living in New York.
