However, when I went to the OBC Home Page, there is nothing on that page that intuitively indicates how to get to the log in page for the directory. Why not put a 2 line clickable link in the TRAILER (aka signature box) of each RAMBLINGS message pointing to the directory? I've suggested this twice before with a thumbs up from Walker & no negative comments, at least to me or the group. About 12 emails in reference to the info were posted in the 2 weeks after I suggested it (3 asking for the link/3 giving the link/6 talking about it). With Gary & my message here again, that makes 14 or I'd like to make a motion to get PTC added to the definitions section along with Moof, SCP, DCP, Tipton, HOM and all those things. PTC stands for PERSONAL TRADING CARD. So now the OBCAC has 2 issues to deal with in August :-) BTW, did Mr Mint or any other dealers pass out any of their own PTCs? I have collected a few business cards over the years that were almost PTCs (Wayne Varner/Doubleheaders etc) and I have about 50 different total PTCs in my collection! Rich Klein from Beckett collects PTCs so that makes 2 of us at least! I'm still missing the elusive OBC John Jackson (I think that's his name/#18?) from 1999! Ken M sent me a JPEG that I printed as a fill in years ago. Ken, Does the BMW in "BMW Sports Cards" stand for Big Money Waste? :-) Half million for a Horrors of War set? Interesting story about that guy getting shot in Atlanta in August 1962. I struck out with my additional research on the event. I'm going to look at the library microfiche & see if I can find an article about it in the Atlanta Journal. If I find one, I'll post it here. I have contacted MSN and they have offered no solution indicating that it "must be due to a recent OBC reformatting?" The Tech person I talked to pulled up my e-mail list and discovered the same problem I am experiencing. Now part of the reason I have stuck with my WebTV is because when it comes to this type of stuff I am a nincomputer. I was advised to "reset cookies" and "clear the receiver's cache" which I was able to do via a step by step procedure provided by my MSN Help page. Still can only read the right side of e-mails. I did discover that I can cut and paste the message to a new e-mail and get the entire message. With the volume of mail I get from OBC that is very time consuming. I can also go to the digest form and read mail there. Also more time consuming and difficult to keep track of which messages I have read and which to delete or save after reading. I hate to give up my wish-it-was a computer WebTV. I like reading/writing e-mails and such from my easy chair on a 32 inch TV screen via my remote keyboard. I know that contrary to the old adage, you CAN teach old dogs new tricks, but to be perfectly honest, this old dog isn't interested. I'm hoping that the couple other WebTvers out there in OBCland can provide other options. Don't believe there is a solution, just venting. Took my oldest son Stephen. We arrived at the field around 11 a.m. for a 1:20 game, taking the elevated train from Willowbrook, where we were staying (let's see, you take the Orange line, change to the Red line at Roosevelt, then exit at Addison Street). Stepping off the el and seeing the field in person is indeed quite a thrill. We walked around the place, bought some Cubs hats, and then went across the street to the Cubby Bear bar/grill for some lunch. Good Italian beef The gates opened around noon, and we went looking for our seats -- section 504, row 3, seats 7-8. That put us down the left-field line in the upper deck, but the sight lines were excellent (although to see a batter hit, I sometimes had to lean around a girder ...). I was amazed at the buildings across the street from the park, how they had bleachers constructed on their roofs. One out behind the right-field wall had a barbecue going (predictably, that one filled up first). We walked around the whole stadium and sampled the food (italian sausage is excellent). Watched some batting practice and then went back to our seats. This was going to be a pretty full house (attendance was announced at 39,993), but we did not feel crowded at It didn't matter that the Cubs lost 5-0, although they did make some boneheaded fielding plays (Ronnie Cedeno's inexperience at second base showed and cost Carlos Zambrano a chance to win). The Pirates hit a pair of homers into the left-field bleachers, and naturally the fans threw the balls back onto the field. Pretty funny. The seventh inning stretch was fun as well, as Hall of Famer Billy Williams led the crowd in "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Heard that Mark Grace had done it Thursday, burying the hatchet with the Cubs after years of ill will. Nice to see. When the game was over we went down toward the third base dugout and hung around. The field looks even nicer up close, I must admit. After leaving the park, we roamed around some more. Walked down Waveland Avenue to see the view the ball hounds see when they wait for homers to fly over the left-field fence. Then we hit the restaurant district, settling for some Chicago-style pizza in a sweaty restaurant (83 degrees on the thermostat). Food was great, We decided to walk toward the lake, and as we headed east I noticed N. Pine Grove Avenue. Hey, Gary Mandell lives around here, let me see if he got the Arena Football cards I sent, I said to my son, who smiled at his dad's flights of whimsy. I had intended to hook up with Gary sometime during the trip, but last-minute scheduling details at work and other factors made that impossible. Sorry, Gary. Anyway, we strolled up the street toward Gary's place, and I believe Pine Grove Avenue must be Wrigleyville's designated dog-walking street. Scores of folks walking their dog in the waning hours of the afternoon. And naturally, I forgot Gary's address, I knew three of his four numbers (are you sure it is 3630, my son said, as we couldn't find that address ...). Went back around the corner, found a phone book and got the right address. Finally found Gary's place, and I gotta tell you folks, his condo is like a skyscraper. It's at least 30 stories high and sits on a corner that, from his floor, I imagine you could see Lake Shore Drive 1-2 blocks awat. Walked in and said hi to the security guard and signed in. Guard called up to Gary, who unfortunately wasn't there. Next time, I promise to give more notice. If you ever have the chance to visit Wrigley Field, do it. It is an old park, but the people are friendly and the food is great. The baseball is fun to watch, too. ================= Date: Sun, 06 Aug 2006 19:02:38 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "kevin71058" Subject: The National Hi all, I am a little late in post my message about a great time at the National My wife and I got in Moday afternoon and just took it easy that day. Tuesday we headed off to The price is right, my wife wanted to get on the show, so we got up at 5am, got on the road by 6am. I come from NY and I thought our traffic was bad, we do not come close to LA's Traffic on the I5. It took us 2 hours for a 45 minute drive. We of course got to the price is right way to late to get on the show. ( A side note to all of you that thought about making this show, you need to get there no later than 5-6 am as the crazy fans get there around 4) Well, since we were in LA, Burbanks, we decided to check out the sites, get a picture of the Hollywood sign, see the Chinese Threater...etc. After the tourist thing we decided to go see the Dodgers play SD, as Mike Piazza is a Padre now and we loved him when he was a Met. This was another adventure as the Dodger parking lot is not the most organized parking area I ever saw, its loops upon it self. We asked like 5 parking attendents where do we need to park to get tickets and receive 5 different responses which helped us stay confused, well with some luck and skill we found the parking lot we needed to be in and off to buy the tickets We got to the ticket booth and nose bleed seats were 14 dollars, my wife wanted to get some good seats as she put it, when will we ever be at Dodger's stadium again, so I bucked out 120 dollars for 2 seats in the lodge behind homebase, nice seats. The Stadium is a great looking stadium for being built when Shea Stadium was, Shea is an arm pit, Dodger stadium was really nice looking , well except for the bathrooms.. The game was great, and just like the true Dodger fans , we left in the 7 inning. Back on I5 and still traffic, doesn't this road ever not have traffic? Onto Wednesday, the day I was looking forward to as today was the sneal peak, VIP day. Got to the sneak peak at 3pm and went up to the booth to get my VIP pass, the girl behind the counter had no idea what was going on..after getting her supervisor I was told to go to another booth, the same thing happened, the girl was lost, another supervisor came over and told me where I need to go. I got on the line and at 3:30 the doors opened to paradise.. We were cattled in to get out VIP bag and some free pizza and Autos. I got my stuff, looked around for some OBCers but no luck so I sat down at a table to have my Pizza and open my goodies, inside the bag was a patch card of Laiment (football player), a cello of Vintage reprint cards, i got a 56 Mantle and a 56 Brooks Robinson card, and there was some Hocket/Football as well in the bag, was not worth the wait of the 100 dollars, but it was fun As I got up, I hear Kevin, kevin!!! I looked open and see Sal, Kent and Josh and another OBC (sorry I am real bad with names) They were still on line to get their bag. I hung out with them until the card floor ropened, they all went one way and I headed to the Hot box that topps was selling only 200 a day I brought a box and it was mainly UV stuff, 1/1 of 1/100 and also 2 and 3 of 5 , I got a Pujols 3/5 , nice looking card. Also by doing this you are able to get a Mantle Triple Crown card. So overall it was worth it. I had to leave the show as my wife and I was heading to Disneyland that night, I have never been there before, It was a great park. The next day, Tuesday..Card day!! Picked up a lot of 53 Topps, there was 2 great tables, one was Jack's table and the other one was only a few rows from Jack. I spent most of my cash at these 2 tables. After the show we got together and headed to the Red Robin, there we had a great meal and I got to meet a few more OBCers including Geordie Calvert,If you never had the honor of meeting Geordie, you should, he is a generous, nice guy!! Geordie treated the group to dinner. Thank you Geordie Friday, I had to get a few Auto's for my 500 homerun ball and then it was off to another Park, this one is more like MGM in Florida Had a great time there On to my last day, Saturday Went to the show, ran into the Actress/director Penny Marshall again as she is a big collector. Ran into a few of the OBCers running around, Sal called me to come help him get some Willie Davis Autos. I stared running low on the funds so I left the show to go back and drop all my goodies off at the hotel That night we were suppe to meet up at a pizza plac ethat Ken setup, but word was it was not a great place to be after the sun goes down, so off to the Red Robin again (I still have not had a hamburger since I have been home..smile) I got to meet Linda Fitak and her husband Tim and also Peter Iverson and all great people, Sal and Kent held dinner up for about an hour as they misplaced their rental car in the parking lot at the show, this was the second time this happened on the trip, is this a Al thing?..smile We all had a great time cards were flying, the conversation was great. The food was good and the fun was fantastic!! I like to Thank all OBCERS for the cards they gave me at the show and dinner it was a plasure and honor to see you guys and gals again.. See you in Cleveland!! During my 3 years of unemployment I was forced to sell my 70, 71 & 72 Topps sets via eBay, which I now deeply miss. They were sets I pretty much completed as a kid and were in pristine condition. Anyway, I've decided to add those 3 sets to my wantlist. I am particularly anxious to begin working on the 71T set since I'm slowly but surely replaying the 1971 SF Giants season using Strat-O-Matic cards/dice and I think it would be cool to have the 71T cards. If anyone is interested in a trade for a starter set for the 71T or the 70 and 72T, please LMK. I currently have some starter sets/cards from the mid/late 70's and early 80's. I also have a few Topps cards from the 50's/60's and a few vintage "Sport" and "Life" magazines, if interested. And...now that I'm searching eBay again for cards to help fill holes in my wantlist, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good eBay dealers?. I've always been pretty happy with jhustle1, although he is sometimes a bit pricey. I'm also familiar with TigerDave. Other than that, I've been poking around and seeing a lot of sellers with nice stuff but many with poor feedback. Seems like the eBay feedback scores of card dealers have plummeted over the past few years. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid :) Any reccomendations welcome. Thanks. Jerry Coker How low will we go? I went to visit my daughter in Springfield, Va. and I was hoping to find a minor league game on Saturday night, but couldn't find one. Ended up seeing the new Will Farrell movies, good parts and bad parts is about all I will say about the movie. Was hoping to find some OBC brethern in the DC area, but no one was available. For this I was truly sad! On Sunday I was able to add Camden Yard to my small list of MLB ball fields I've seen. Great ballpark!!!! My daughter and I attended along with an old high school friend. We had 3 tickets total and I was hoping to get someone from OBC to join us and we could talk baseball, but alas, no one responded to my request. So we talked about other things besides baseball, because neither of them were baseball fans. But the game itself was great, if you're a Yankees fan. Being a baseball fan and not really rooting for either team, the game was all NYY. O's got a lot of guys to third, but like my Pirates, couldn't come up with the clutch hit. Wanted to find a good place for a crab dinner after the game, but again, none of us were from Baltimore and didn't know where to go, we went home. Got back to Ridgway at 10:15 last night. Here's an example of what I'm talking about based on a card I'm chasing myself: First, here's Mr. Hanover-Chipper selling a PSA 3: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=005&item=150021682373&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 He started this card at $900 a few weeks ago and has dropped it about $50 each time it doesn't sell. If it gets to the $400ish range, I'll bid on it. Anyway, so here's the guy selling it to upgrade to this card, which is a PSA 5 and which he is high bidder on: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=007&item=170017806532&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Now, here's the part that bugs me - The PSA 5 is a VG card due to its centering! There is no way it is an EX card with that centering, but if PSA says it is, it must be worth three times his VG card - you must be kidding me! The 5 card does look nicer, but he is really spending three times the amount for a card in the same "technical grade," at least in my opinion. Oh well, I hope the end result is that PSA 3s become cheaper! Maybe we should be slabbing the slabs themselves. What happens if you ding the corner of the platic slab - does that lower it's value?!? First, I'd like to apologize for not being too active in the group lately. I went out on my own a few years ago in business and have been working some extreme hours for far too long.. can you say burn-out? The good news is that I work from home (close to the family) and I can finally see some leveling off in my time demands.. so hopefully I can hop back into the group a little more. However, please be advised.... I always returned packages!... I (at least) kept that going. I also keep an eye on the group e-mails... man you guys (and gal) type a lot. Geno asked awhile back about the National, well I have nothing too exteme to note, but have a great experience to share.... I marked out my calendar in ink a year ago that the National would be in town. I live an hour or so away, so I planned on spending at least a few days getting hypnotized by looking though every card there. Then came reality. We had to postpone any vacation plans for the week between my oldest sons freshman summer baseball camp and my commitment to coach kids soccer, plus wife and kids going back to school. Dang, wouldn't you know it was the same week? So as my wife told me to make a decision, I looked at the schedule and decided that I would have to deal with only going on Wednesday. The plan was for my youngest son, Wyatt to go with me. He has picked up the baseball card bug and was obsessed with getting down there for the few weeks leading up to the event... When my youngest started getting interested in cards, I decided to steer him away from UV's the same way I would tell him that he is walking to close to a cliff's edge. So I told him to pick one player from the 50, 60, or 70's to collect. On his own, he chose RON CEY. So we quickly compiled the coveted Penguin Wantlist. He picked a Dodger! So now I know he is a Sweeney for Now for the shameless plug, please send any spare Ron Cey cards to Wyatt Sweeney. You have no idea how much it will mean to this little kid's obsession. Back to the topic at hand.... the plan was to get down to Anaheim early Wednesday. We got down there about 11:00 am and pulled into the parking lot... that is when I said "man, there aren't many cars here! Did I make a mistake?" The marquee said National, the guy that took my parking fee said National, what the heck? Well, although my wife would disagree, they would not let me in because I was not a VIP or the press. But hey, the show opens to the public in like 6 hours... what to do, what to do....spend 3 hours in traffic on the freeway going home and back or.. give Disney some money across Harbor Blvd? For those of you that do not know me, I work in the corrosion field. I have taken on many work assignments on the rides at Disneyland and have a lot of first hand knowledge of their attitude towards the safety of their customers. It is exactly like BP making billions in profit per quarter, yet never spending a few million on that Alaska pipeline's corrosion problem. Long story short (or topic for a future ramble)... My 10 year old son that lives just North of "The Happiest Place on Earth" has never been in to see Mickey. What to do, what to do?... well I rationalized that most of Disney's problems are related to old ride design problems, so the newer "sister park" California Adventure would be safer.. so we walked over to the line. I figured we'd spend few hours on some rides and then head back to the show. Well, that is when my son said, "we have to pay $70 each to go in there for a few hours?" Well, we had no choice, so I took the cash reserved for a Nolan Ryan card I was pursuing, bought the tickets and went inside. We went on every ride, had a blast, and walked back to the show just in time for the opening.... We got in and now I was in "my Disneyland" What can I say? It is just the best. We walked down the first aisle and stopped at the Batters Box booth. I had a hard time dealing with the fact that all of their cards had a barcode on the back, but I did find a few T206 Sweeney card variations. I then was the third person to sign up for there mailer...who was the second?.. Josh Levine. My son and I immediately looked up and around... no Josh. The show just opened and he must have just signed up... but he was nowhere to be seen!. We then walked about 1/3 of the show going through most tables. I didn't get to damage my wantlist like I had been planning for over year because I had more fun walking with my son, explaining some card knowledge to him. Can you imagine a 10 year old walking up to every booth and asking if they had any Ron Cey Cards. I ended up finding a 69 Ryan that met my needs, a bunch of commons, and a Kirk Gibson bobble head. Surprisingly, there were not many Cey cards like I expected - which made the pursuit even more exciting when we found one. I figured that the long day would be the real test of Wyatt's urge for cards, but you know at 9:30pm when most guys had put there wears away, he was still saying come on Dad, one more table over there! I must say that most dealers were more than cool to him. One guy noted to me that it is very rare to see a 10 year old anymore, and that kind of saddened him (us). He asked what lies ahead for the future of our hobby? Good question. I wonder if the UV craze unnaturally made a wall between the ability of future generation of cards collectors from keeping the chase going? Anyway, what a great day it was, except for the fact that I could not join the other OBC members that I think came the next day. Depression set in a few days later when we read in the LA Times that CEY signed autographs during the VIP session... DANG! Anyone see the HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumble with some footage at the National? It was a story on a potential counterfeit T206 Wagner... kind of Thanks for making it to the bottom. July 24th through August 17th no Internet or TV to say the least i was going stir crazy. We are moved in to our new place but boxes all over the place as we moved in and found the nice house we thought we bought had pretty much been trashed. All the walls need painting as it looked like they had tennis matches in every room leaving little black marks over all of them. Fortunately for us my daughter has a classmate who is a painter who works for $10 an hour cash. Unfortunately he can only work weekend as he has class and another job so it is going slow. We are hoping he will be done in a couple of more weeks as he has only he kitchen, basement, upstairs, one wall in basement bedroom (ran out of paint yesterday) and 2 small bathrooms. National was a major bust for the most part as I went there with the hopes of finishing my 61 Post Company and 63 Post set, which the exception of Macavoy's nobody seemed to have any. I did find some variation of 52 Topps, 58 Warren Spahn with obscured 3, few others Yellow lettered 58, but other than that I spent time looking for others which was equally as fun as I found a 65 leaders card for Geordie, Philly card of Paul Hourning for Ken, some 58 for Kevin, and some 58 Hoeft variation cards (after i found one for myself) for Sal. Sal already found same cards so I now have a collection of 58 Hoeft that only Grant would envy:-). I also added several names to the have meet list including the Fitak's, Eric Greenwood, Dave Fallon and Marshall West. Along with renewing old friendships will Sal, Ken Goto, Kent Morganti, Josh Levine, Geordie, Kevin and his wife, Peter Sal was the keeper of my things I left behind like want lists, phones and my OBC hat. If wasn't pinned to me I left it only to have Sal coming behind he to collect it up and give it back to me to lose some where else. Wish to take this time to thank the people who gave me things but the envelope has been since lost (I didn't bring Sal home wih me :-( but I now the Fitaks gave me a 53 Mothers Cookie of Jim Wilson and some 53 Johnston Cookie of a Ranier., Marshall West also gave me some cards but for the life of me cant remember which ones. I just know they were greatly appreciated; as was dinner by Geordie and the camaraderie of the week with each and everyone there. It was actually the highlight of the event. To end the National on a sour note I had a 11:40 pm flight out of LAX Sunday night as the next day I was to close on my house. When I arrived at the airport to get my boarding pass to find out my fight had been cancelled and the only time the could get me to MPLs was 3:30 in afternoon (if i got on standby) or 6:40 in evening which would be well pass my closing time. My only option which i took was Norwest could get me out at 6:00 in he morning to arrive at 12:05 which would get me the closing. Downside was at midnight i was going to cost me $770 one way. One of the complaints at Nationals as my wantlist is getting down to where no one can send me cards (Bring a smile to wife's face as I told her that) so I am putting together a wantlist of Twins teams (Topps) including leaders cards if they show a Twin on front (which I am sure is bringing a divorce lawyer when she see what i am doing). So anyone has Twins dup I am sure I need them if you need to get rid of clutter (wife words not mine) send them my way:-) One package has finally arrived at my new home in the form of Bert Blyleven cards from AARON SHIRLEY and as he stated I do have all of them but with me new Twins project The Topps cards will go to that and beside Aaron you can NEVER have enough Blyleven cards:-) Thanks to Aaron and the OBC gang at Naionals for he cards and friendship. As I tell my friends back Home the smile hasnt left my face since I hit the Minnesota state line and part of that is from the card and remembering the fun I had in California. My new address is Ray Luurs (funny that stayed the same) 11001 NE Tyler Street Blaine, Minnesota 55434 New phone is (763) 843-8793 Thanks for getting this far and for those tha didnt I am sure movie version will be out early next year ================= To: , Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2006 20:51:25 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Time to ramble about the National... First, I'd like to apologize for not being too active in the group lately. I went out on my own a few years ago in business and have been working some extreme hours for far too long.. can you say burn-out? The good news isthat I work from home (close to the family) and I can finally see some leveling off in my time demands.. so hopefully I can hop back into the group alittle more. However, please be advised.... I always returned packages!... I (at least) kept that going. I also keep an eye on the group e-mails... man you guys (and gal) type a lot. Geno asked awhile back about the National, well I have nothing too extemeto note, but have a great experience to share.... Theplan was for my youngest son, Wyatt to go with me. He has picked up the baseball card bug and was obsessed with getting down there for the few weeksleading up to the event... When my youngest started getting interested incards, I decided to steer him away from UV's the same way I would tell himthat he is walking to close to a cliff's edge. So I told him to pick one player from the 50, 60, or 70's to collect. On his own, he chose RON CEY. So we quickly compiled the coveted Penguin Wantlist. He picked a Dodger! So now I know he is a Sweeney for sure. Now for the shameless plug, please send any spare Ron Cey cards to Wyatt Sweeney. But hey, the show opens to the public in like 6 hours... what to do, what to do....spend 3 hours intraffic on the freeway going home and back or.. give Disney some money across Harbor Blvd? For those of you that do not know me, I work in the corrosion field. I have taken on many work assignments on the rides at Disneylandand have a lot of first hand knowledge of their attitude towards the safety of their customers. I then was the third person to sign up for there mailer...who was the second?..Josh Levine. My son and I immediately looked up and around... no Josh. The show just opened and he must have just signed up... but he was nowhere to be seen!. We then walked about 1/3 of the show going through most tables. I didn'tget to damage my wantlist like I had been planning for over year because Ihad more fun walking with my son, explaining some card knowledge to him. I figured that the long day would be the real test of Wyatt's urge for cards, but you know at 9:30pm when most guys had put there wears away, he wasstill saying come on Dad, one more table over there! I must say that mostdealers were more than cool to him. One guy noted to me that it is very rare to see a 10 year old anymore, and that kind of saddened him (us). He asked what lies ahead for the future of our hobby? Good question. I wonder ifthe UV craze unnaturally made a wall between the ability of future generation of cards collectors from keeping the chase going? Anyway, what a great day it was, except for the fact that I could not join the other OBC members that I think came the next day. Depression set in a few days later when we read in the LA Times that CEY signed autographs during the VIP session... DANG! Anyone see the HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumble with some footage at the National? It was a story on a potential counterfeit T206 Wagner... kind of Thanks for making it to the bottom. Yesterday, I was to go to the Tigers game with a friend of mine, but we were running late due to his fantasy FB draft. With no-hitters on both sides into the 5th the game went quickly, so that by the time we got down there it was already the 6th inning and the Tigers trailed 3-0. With a sell out and a big ethnic festival downtown, parking was scarce, so we eventually decided to forget going to the game and went to a sports bar back in teh burbs to watch the end of another Tigers loss; the playoff race is getting tighter here. The Tigers offer a program where you can exchange unused season tickets for tickets to a weekday game, so my buddy hopes to exchange them for an upcoming game that I will get to go to. Today was a local card show. Earl Kilbourn met up with me there late due to a family emergency with their dog going to the vets. Ron Perry was supposed to join us. Ron lives about 1 1/2 hours from the show, and about 15 minutes from getting tehre was involved in a car accident. Ron was a bit shaken, but is OK. His car window was shattered and he cut his finger, but everything else is fine. As for the show, I did extremely well. Fav dealer, Mike Sandles had a few 1950 Topps FB. For those unaware, this was one of Topps first issues, pre-dating the 1951 BB. They are the size of postage stamps and have felt backs. Quite scarce and I only had 32 of 100 and none of the variations. Although he had 3 in the showcase marked $150; $50 & $20, he told me there was also 1 in his $2 box. It was 4th from the end of the box of course, but I found it. I eventually got all 4 for about 1/2 price. 3 of the 4 were the tougher yellow variations and included Dan "Deacon" Towler. I also bought a box of 400+ Cadaco All Star BB game discs. There are numerous different versions of the game. Anyone have some checklists??? I also was able to get 2 more pre-war hockey cards, including 1 from OPC's very first sport issue 1933-4 Series A; and a 1952 Berk Ross. Considering how many sets I already have, plus the 500+ I am already working on, it was surprising to get 2 more type cards today, both from 1948. Swell Sport Thrills #10 VanderMeer and also a Kellogg's Pep George Mikan, which is the key player in this multi-sport set of 20. Earl and I also were able to go back to East Side Mario's for apprtizers and watch the Tigers blow a 6 run lead and lost their 3rd Great sports weekend. But, I can tell you Howard Morgan still has his ticket stub he got from the game that day as a teenager in 1901! :-) I think he is getting it slabbed by PSA! An article in SABR does not mention Bisonette, but it seems like it was real. Rumors on McCovey appear to be unfounded, Ruth had a couple of unintentional intentional Napoleon Lajoie, May 23, 1901--the Philadelphia Athletics were batting against the White Sox in the top of the ninth inning. They were behind, 11-7, but had the bases loaded and none out with Lajoie- -on his way to a Triple Crown--at bat. Manager Clark Griffith inserted himself as relief pitcher and "calmly sent four wide ones across" to deliberately force in a run, bringing future home run champs Socks Seybold and Harry Davis up with the bases still full. Griffith then disposed of Seybold, Davis, and Morgan Murphy on infield grounders, saving the 11-9 win. Del Bissonette, May 2, 1928--the Giants held a 2-0 lead over the Robins, 2-0, in the top of the ninth, but Brooklyn loaded the bases with two out. Giants, manager John McGraw ordered pitcher Larry Benton to walk rookie slugger Bissonette, in just his 16th major league game, purposely ending the shutout. Benton then struck out Harry Riconda to end the game. Bill Nicholson, July 23, 1944 (2nd game)--The Giants led the Cubs, 10-7, in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded, none out, and Nicholson--who had homered four times already that day--at the plate. Giants, manager Mel Ott (who was probably sitting next to McGraw at the above game) ordered Ewald Pyle to walk Nicholson, bringing up Ival Goodman, Andy Pafko, and Don Johnson. The Cubs tied the game up by the time the inning was over, but New York went on to win, 12-10. Barry Bonds, May 28, 1998--The Diamondbacks led the Giants, 8-6 in the bottom of the ninth, with two out, the bases loaded, and Bonds up. Arizona manager Buck Showalter ordered Gregg Olson to issue the intentional pass, putting the tying run on third and the winning run on second. Brent Mayne then lined out to end the game. Seems like a good strategy - it worked four times out of four. ================= Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2006 19:11:32 -0500 To: DaPatriot1@aol.com From: ddejong@everestkc.net Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] DECENT ebay dealer?

I was planning on getting there when the doors opened. However, as Mike also reported, I had one sick puppy. Literally! Three weeks ago our English Mastiff had pups and one of them became very ill Saturday evening. By 10pm she was steadily getting worse, so I spent from 11pm until 3am Sunday in the Emergency Vet Hospital. By the time I got home and got the pups fed and settled in, it was about 5am. I caught a few hours sleep followed by several cups of coffee and was off to try to find the VFW Hall in Redford. A few wrong turns and a couple stops at local gas stations and I made it. There is no al in my name, however my cruddy buddy from grade school always spelled my name Eral, maybe that counts. Personally I think the directional impairment is linked to the undertall gene. Our Cro-Magnon ancestors could not see over the tall grass so they didn't travel much. At any rate, by the time I arrive at the show, Mike already has a big stack of semi hi Psychos for me to check against my wantlist. Sure enough, I find numerous hits in the stack of Ben Franklins (from the five & dime boxes). Having done considerable damage to the 72 list, I decided to focus on the 58s. I found myself a chair at Mike Sandles table and commenced to persevere. four 800 count boxes later, I was yet to find a single 58. Finally Mike Rich took pity on me, walked over to a couple boxes to my left and within seconds began tossing 58s my way. The guy on my right picked up the cue and began tossing 58s as well. Of the dozen or so 58s I bought, I found only one on my own. I hope my miserable card shopping record does not effect my OBC status. I was as close as you are going to get to "inactive". Now, way over on the other end of the card shopping spectrum was the afore mentioned Mike Rich! For anyone that has not been a witness to Mike's card identifying & locating prowess, you have missed one of OBCs true masters at work, or should I say play. I have observed dealers who spot Mike and immediately pull a card/cards from under the table and say "Mike, I need help identifying these." More then once he has tossed me a card and said "you need this card." I, however was dubious, but upon reviewing my list, sure enough I needed it. If you are within earshot of Mike at a show, you can hear him saying "Morganti needs this", or "this is the next to the last card Donaldson needs to complete the set". If any of you are at a show and leave your list at home, call Mike, he'll tell you if you need a card or not. Remember the 58 card tossing guy on my right? Well, I could tell by his conversations with myself and others that he was a very experienced collector. Even so he was all agog at the 50 football cards Mike referenced in his report. He listened in awe as Mike told him all about the set. All he could say was, "I never seen one before, I never knew they existed." When Mike retires he should write a book: Rich Thoughts - The ultimate guide to sports card shopping. OK, back to my finds. Beyond the 72s & 58s, I also found several hits to my HOM/HOF set including a 55B Virdon, a 52T of Tiger Pat Mullin and various oddballs for my HOF set. On the uv front, I picked up three packs of 06 Topps Heritage. Out of the three packs, I found only 2 new hits to that set. What a tough set. Two 24 pack boxes from the local card shop, four 8 pack boxes from K-Mart and another dozen single packs here and there, and I still need 160 of the 485 card set. Well at least my grandkids have an ample supply of sugarless gum for my efforts. Again, as Mike reported, we went to a local sports bar after the show where we enjoyed a few tall ones, lemonade for Mike and iced tea for me. Mike settled for a plate and a half of appetizers, but I required a rare medium cheeseburger that was, to quote Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, "verrrry taste!" Unlike Jackson I didn't shoot anyone afterward, but I did shoot the bull with Mike for a while as our Tigers squandered a 6 - 0 lead. As we were heading out the door, Mike said something about hitting a small antiques shop before he went home. As for me, I went straight home.....well there was that one missed turn! Why am I telling you this now? Well, I only recently dug it up and fortunately these things don't expire for quite a long time. I used it up by purchasing the 2005 SCD to replace my 2001 edition. I also grabbed three cheap copies of "The Book"** if anyone would care for one - I even tiptonized one by ripping off half the cover opening the package (I taped it back on, so it's cool now). I'm still waiting for one more to arrive, but you can put a claim in now - first three requests get one. There is a 1973 and a 1975 edition - both (pocket sized?) a lot smaller than the ones I was used to seeing, but they are in color and it's a cool read if you're into old baseball cards... anyone? Read it and pass it on or keep it in your library forever. Oh yeah, I also have a well worn 2001 SCD if anyone would care for that... but I'd like to get a little help on the postage if you do - or you can stop by the house and pick it up ;-) LMK, Ken M - **"The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book" if you didn't get my reference to "The Book" ================= Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2006 22:13:06 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "T.J. The program which is used to make updates to the "old-style" want lists has been having some occasional problems. For example, this problem with T.J.'s list might have been because the 1969 Football set is the last set on the list. We're trying to convert over to the "new-style" want lists which make use of on-screen checklists (that can actually be checked!) to create want lists which are stored on the OBC database. Eventually, we hope to match up the "cards available" with the "cards wanted" to streamline the process of hooking up people with available cards with those who need them urgently. Also, for those of you who still use the "old-style" want lists on the OBC server, if you know your passwords, be sure to write them down somewhere or commit them to memory. If you forget those passwords, ain't nobody can dig them up for you, and we'll have to start you over brand new with a new account name/password. In the "new-style" want lists, or for any of the OBC personal information, if you forget your password, there is a button you can click which will mail your current password to the email address currently on file for you. That makes life a lot simpler, in my opinion. Also, it came to my attention from alert members Bob Donaldson, Keith Summers, and Shawn Adkins that our bulletproof ultra-secure address list was able to be displayed after logging in with any name from the drop-down list and any bogus password entered - or no password at all. That's been fixed. I did a little work on that same program within the past week or two, and I accidentally de-activated the password-checking routine. Grovelling is just another of the many services I offer. :) Wayne Delia, wayne@deliafamily.net Delta Iota Chapter Advisor, Phi Kappa Sigma at Marist College "You want the truth? How right you are! I gave those years off the top of my head, then went home yesterday and looked it up. You're correct: the copyrights are 1976 and 1980. I knew there was a 4-5 year spread between editions, but I was off--I stand corrected. I sold my last copy of either edition in 1981 . . . looking back on it, I most certainly could have gone to a second printing on both, at least. (Feel free to post any of the following on any blog, message board or listserv, by the way--I'm flattered that, first, anybody still remembers who I am and, second, even cares.) I was an active collector until the late early '80s, when the following intervened in my collecting pursuits: college; marriage; job; life in general. Also, quality control at the major card companies (Topps, Fleer, and Donruss at the time) had started to slip markedly while they struggled to put gobs and gobs of product. Quality gave way to quantity, and we went from a couple hundred uncorrected errors/variations in any given year to over a thousand. Most of these were, even to me, too trivial to catalogue, and I felt things got completely out of hand in the hobby in general by the '90s. I haven't even subscribed to a collecting publication since the early '90s. I do still have most of my E&V collection, although I sold just about everything else when I left for college. Occasionally I'll pick up a pack or two out of curiosity when I see them at the local drug store, but I haven't assembled a complete set or "gone fishing for errors and variations" in a long, long time. You've helped remind me of how much fun I had doing that 30+ years ago--you even brought to mind the unique smell of that slab of gum that wafted out every time I opened up a wax pack. Oh, for the days when a nickel bought you five cards and that piece of brittle gum! Back in the early days ('60s and '70s) very few of us were into errors and variations. One of the kingpins back then was, as you probably know, a Keith Olbermann. I think we all know what happened to him! I just wonder what happened to HIS collection. I'll check out the website when I have a chance. Thanks again, Keith. One night at one of the campus bars that was usually frequented by football players, he ordered a beer and expected to get it free like he usually did from one of his croonies. The girl, who had no clue what a football even looked like, said "That will be $1.50, please." George said, "$1.50, do you know who I am?!?" "No," she replied. He said "I am Jeff George, the quarterback of the football team!" She got a surprised look on her face and retorted with, "Oh, I'm sorry. In that case it will be a $1.50, please." He wrote articles for SCD and was the author of THE MISTAKE MANUAL. There were 2 editions of his book by the way: 1976 (250 copies) (550 copies) Just to explain the start of his message, he originally told me 1971 & 1975 were the copyright dates. But when people (Mark Talbot /Dick Gilkeson/Shawn Adkins/ Beckett's Rich Klein etc) starting emailing saying they had 1976 & 1980, I sent Rick an email asking for a clarification. He sent back a great reply he said I coud share with all of you. He works as a Jazz DJ now and sounds like a great guy! BTW, Rick asks that if you want to email him, to use this: SaxTrax@Juno.com and not other email addys you may have. I also sent him an official invite a few minutes ago to join the card-variations YahooGroup I founded on Feb 6th, 2005 which is at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/card-variations So hopefully he'll drop by at least just to say HELLO soon. Maybe (if we don't push him) he'll even send confirmation scans of some variations we have yet to verify :-) If any of you in OBC or VCT want in, just LMK! By the way, the group is not listed in the YG ============================= E-mail message From: rick@XXXXXXXXX (O'DELL, RICK) Date: Wed, Aug 30, 2006, (EDT-1) To: KeithSummers@webtv.net Subject: E&V Stuff Hi Keith: Obviously you know your stuff better than I do! Also, quality control at the major card companies (Topps, Fleer, and Donruss at the time) had started to slip markedly while struggled to put gobs and gobs of product. Quality gave way to and we went from a couple hundred uncorrected errors/variations in any given year to over a thousand. Most of these were, even to me, too trivial to catalogue, and I felt things got completely out of hand in the hobby in general by the '90s. I haven't even subscribed to a collecting publication since the early I do still have most of my E&V collection, although I sold just about everything else when I left for college.
