I'm sure you all get this quite often, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to get the word out in case there's someone who this sparks interest for. I had a guy approach me this weekend about needing to sell his 1974 and 1975 Topps complete sets. He sent me several scans of the 1974s, including some of the stars, and they're all pretty sharp. Here's what he said about them: "The 1974 set... I make no claim to be a professional grader, but I believe that the vast majority of the cards are EX-NM or better. No ink, creases, original sheen on most of them. The unique thing about this set is that it includes ALL the Washington National/ San Diego Padres card variations, all of the error and corrected cards ( #608 - Apodaca and Apodaco, #654 Alou with and without position, #599 Freisleben Washington National, SD Padre Bold type, and San Diego Padre small type). It also includes all the unnumbered team checklists. I am thinking of asking $400 or so for the 1974 set and around 350 for the 1975 set. The 75 set is not as good as the 74 set. It has some gum stained backs, one checklist was checked in ( I can try locally to replace it). Overall I would say mostly VG-NM, especially on the star cards." The cards are in sheets. He's also got several later sets from Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Score and Upper Deck... as well as several vintage stars from 1955 through 1973. He sent me a complete listing of cards, and told me that he needed to sell them because of a family emergency. I have asked where he is located, and just hoped that maybe someone would have some interest... I also suggested that he consider eBay if he needed to get a buyer quick. Any other ideas? Email me if you can help... Ladies & gentlemen, I present to you my HOM nominee, DAVE CONCEPCION. In all seriousness, he was the defensive anchor of the Reds dynasty, covering for Rose's lack of range at 3B, & Morgan's weak arm at 2B. And, as a fellow skinny little middle infielder, I looked up to the guy & figured if he could make it, so could I. He was a classy guy who didn't get the press that his colorful teammates did, but part of that was the language barrier. I also admire him for playing his entire career with my favorite team, even sticking around as a utility infielder on some horrendous 1980's Reds teams while he mentored his replacement - a guy named Larkin. I was looking at the HOM nominees, & it seems like there are a lot of us in the group who haven't nominated a candidate for the HOM. I urge you to follow my lead & do so. Your candidate can be nominated for whatever reason you choose - he doesn't have to be a "close-but-no-cigar for the HOF" type, either; take a look at the HOM roster & see for yourself. (Did he have memorable baseball cards? Did he mean something to you or your community personally? Did he do something outlandish? You get the idea.) Our rules state that everyone gets one HOM nominee, so think it over, & see if you can come up with someone. Let's see if we can get the HOM humming! Still in uniform, the players ran for their horse-drawn bus. As the last man climbed aboard, a bolt of lightning struck, killing both horses. Cantillon lifted his fists to the skies. It took place in the old Texas League. Apparently it was a hot day and the grass had not been mowed. Anyway, a batter hit a soft line drive into centerfield. The center fielder came tearing in for the ball, as you might expect; but then, to everyone's surprise, he stopped dead in his tracks before reaching the ball, which had stopped rolling but seemed hidden by the tall grass. Then, to everyone's amazement, the outfielder turned around and ran to the outfield fence where he proceeded to tear a board out of the fence, returning to the approximate location where the ball should be. He then started using the fence board to pound the ground over and over. By this time, all of his team mates assumed he must have gone crazy in the hot desert sun and ran to see if they could help their poor friend. When they arrived, an amazing sight appeared before their eyes. The center fielder stood there, board in hand, staring down at the ball - sitting on the ground in the middle of the coils of a now-dead rattle snake. As I recall, this was supposed to be an account of a true story. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2006 13:37:43 -0700 From: Subject: Missing Donor-in-Action Well Guys and Gals: As an older control freak, it pains me to admit that I goofed up in my haste, especially when it comes to an older card someone from OBC SENT TO ME PERSONALLY! Yesterday I started reviewing OBC lists, and am already at about 50 packages to be sealed. This may take a little while, as I always try to include a little note whenever I send out cards. Additionally, a number of lists (especially those whose last names start with "S") were last updated many months ago, many in 2005 and even 1 in 2003! Many of those were skipped. If the individual cannot update their list, I do not feel any need to send them cards. Granted it is possible that someone has made no progress in that time, but it is highly unlikely if they are paricipating in the group. There are a few exceptions, including the 1 person who listed a grand total of 4 cards on their list. If I had 1 of the 4, I would have sent it, as I am sure hits are few and far between. Even if you cannot send return fire, the person who spent time reviewing your list deserves at least to know you received their package. Another thing I noticed in reviewing the OBC address directory is that a few people have moved (Dan Coen, Matt Heilenman, Lynn Miller & Kit Okamuro?) but their addresses on the site have not been updated. I hate sending out apckages that might not make it to the recipient due to a bad address. Jeff Newman's address does not include his zip code (06902). Among these has been Mark Talbot and his birthday challenge and Kent Goto with a recent mass mailing. I decided to try and send out a bunch of packages. Personally, I believe all lists should have a last updated date on them. Additionally, although we all get quite busy from time to time, thanks should be timely (within a week) posted. I might have missed changes in address for Jeff Sackman, Dave Purdham & Jim Wiehe from the last list I posted as the addresses are not the same. I would appreciate hearing from you 3 as to your addresses. (Not all that I mention should get their hopes up that I have a package for them, although it is highly likely). Last year, after Ben Fisher had his collection stolen we sent out reminders that it is smart to REMOVE your address from your OBC list and we can access it through the directory. I noticed a number still have it available to the general public. Now in Father Pat's case, he feels protected by G-d, but for the rest of us, it is probably not a good I would also like to reiterate Tom Housely's ramble about nominating a HOMer. For the new members, this is the Hall of Mediocrity, run by Grant Rainsley. You may nominate anyone who played prior to 1980 who is NOT a HOFer. Many have special collections of their HOMer. I have seen Rick Svetcz's shrine to Johnny Callion, Peter Mead's Jim Konstanty and John McLaughlin's collection of Mark the Bird Fidrych. Other FOOT members HOMers such as Eeks Charlie Paw Paw Maxwell and Mark Talbot's Norm Cash. I have been fortunate to visit a number of OBCers homes to see these in person. It is fun to learn people's fav's and see if you can find a special oddball for them. Obviously HOFers like Lynn's Hammer or Chuck Paris' with Al Kaline are out there, but find a handout from Norm Cash Day at Tiger Stadium and see Mark Talbot light up is truly special or send Grant a personalized autographed 8 x 10 of Billy Hoeft and receive a phone call. To me these are a few simple things we can do to make the group more enjoyable for all of us. Dated (and updated) wantlists; sending out thanks; keeping the directory up to date with our addresses and letting others know who your fav player/team , etc are so they can be on the look out for you. These are not meant as complaints, as they are thoughts to make the group better. Sorry this was so lenghty, but maybe the mass mailing to take place will make up for it. I had reconstructive ankle surgery in May and need extensive physical therapy to fully recover. I go 4 times a week to this guy near my house and since I spend 2-3 hours each time with him, we've gotten to talking on many occassions. When he found out I was into baseball cards, he said he had some stuff he wanted to show me. He came in yesterday with 2 shoeboxes and 2 binders full of cards!! Three baseball, one football. Going thru the cards he had every star from the 56 Topps set, 53 Topps Paige, 57 Topps Mantle, 53 Bowman Color Mantle, etc. When he showed me his binders and boxes, I discovered that I was looking at well over 1000 cards that had not been seen since the 50s. Among the cards are (31) 1952 Topps, a few dozen 53 Topps and Bowmans, (280) 1956 Topps cards, (275) 1955 Bowmans, and about (150) from 1949-1952 Bowman. Also there are over (400) football cards including (155) 1955 Bowmans alone. After going through all the stuff, my physical therapist asked me if I'd be able to help him sell what he had. He's getting married in September, so he asked to keep the star cards to pass onto his future kids. A card shop owner offered him $150 for everything recently but he thought he could do better somewhere else (smart guy!) I started listing the stuff last night on Evilbay and wanted to pass the info along to anyone that is interested. These are all original owner cards so I thought some OBCers might appreciate adding them to their collections. Shipping for OBCers is 100% free. My eBay ID is obc-spacktrack http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZobc-spacktrackQQhtZ-1QQfrppZ200QQfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQrdZ0 I thought you might like the story and maybe even find some cards that you need. I'd like to be placed on the OBC inactive list for the foreseeable future. This has been an extremely difficult decision to make, but one which I think is the only fair one for all. For some time now, I haven't been able to commit myself fully to card collecting in general, and to OBC in particular. This has been due to a whole host of other priorities raising their heads in my life, most notably at work and in my family. Fortunately, my reasons do not involve negative problems such as illness, etc. It's simply that I'm taking on more responsibilities at work, more commitments at home (of a financial sort), and devoting more time to both my wife and my mother. I'm sure you'll understand when I say that in the great scheme of things, something had to give, and for the moment I'm afraid the card collection has had to be put on the back burner. To the new guys, I'm sorry that I haven't had the opportunity to get to know you fully. The review below from The New York Post provides an interesting preview and summary of the show. SORTING SOX By MIKE BATTAGLINO July 8, 2006 -- ONE of the most influential men in baseball history is a former night watchman. Bill James revolutionized the game with statistical formulas that were powerful enough to break the "Curse of the Bambino." Now he's the most valuable player in "Baseball's Secret Formula," premiering Monday at 9 p.m. on the Discovery Science Channel. James' theories, which challenge traditional thinking on hitting, pitching, baserunning and defense, served as a blueprint for the 2004 Red Sox, who won the franchise's first World Series in 86 years and remain one of the best teams in baseball. "You name it, [in baseball] we're 20 years behind," grateful Red Sox manager Terry Francona says in the hour-long program. "I think we're just trying to use the technology, or use anything we can, to win more games." As an 11-year-old, James became fascinated by what he could glean from the numbers on the backs of baseball cards. Later, working the graveyard shift at a pork-and-beans company, he pored over boxscores and used his schooling in economics to make sense of them. He self-published "Baseball Abstract," an extensive statistical analysis which later served as the inspiration for the "Moneyball" style of James, 56 and a special adviser to the Red Sox, believes in the sanctity of outs, and that on-base percentage is paramount, far more significant than batting average or home runs. "Studying baseball in the way that I do, I come to the conclusion that something that people believe to be true isn't," James says. The program, better listened to than watched, explains, with argument-ending influence: * How Johnny Damon, with 10 HRs and 75 RBIs for the Red Sox, was a more effective player than Andruw Jones, who hit 51 HRs with 128 RBIs for the * The effect altitude has on play at Coors Field in Denver. * Why risking an out (via sacrifice or steal) is not worth the base that's * That the best relief pitchers should pitch the seventh inning instead of the ninth. * Who the all-time best players were. Current major-leaguers Mike Piazza, Jason Varitek and Doug Mirabelli, former executive Sandy Alderson and Francona weigh in on James' side. With "sabermetrics" as much a part of the game now as the seventh-inning stretch, casual and die-hard fans alike can learn something from "Secret "It isn't any better than any other way of looking at issues. . . . It's just different," James says. Here is a little true story. Her friends in Germany have a 11 year old boy, Luca that has been playing for at least 5 years now. Much like our youth baseball and football programs they have a local team. However these local teams are the only sport the kids play on, they train year round and have camps dedicated to their position. Luca plays goalie so at his camp both of the German national team goalies show the kids the drills, and oversee their performance. The kids are broken into age groups and rated on their performance by the coaching staff and professionals. Then when Luca turns 14 he becomes eligible to train with the Professional youth teams, for further development. Much like the A, AA, AAA for baseball. Now here is where it gets a little weird for me to understand. From 14-16 the players are not paid, nor can they be transferred (traded) however after they reach 16 they can be sold to another club in the youth programs live with a host family, until they reach the 2nd Division. From 16 until 18 they are paid a youth salary (about 18K). Now the fans cheer their home town team (even the small villages have teams) and drink beer and eat brats during the week, then the regional teams (small cities) play on Friday and Sat. Finally the top two divisions play on Sat and Sunday. Its feasible to see a game every night, watch kids develop over time, and the game ticket prices range from free to $38 for top pro game decent seat. Maybe Americans are to diverse with all of the teams one can follow in all of the different sports. They only follow one... For about the past year I've been cutting back on card expenses in order to save for a car. To replace all the addictive energy that went into cards, I've discovered "movie watching". I finished watched ALL the movies on the American Film Institute Top 100, Top 100 Thrills, Top 100 Heroes + Villians and Top 100 Laughs. Now I'm on another project -- watch all the movies included in the book "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die". I've had great luck finding movies at area libraries as well as Blockbuster and Netflix. Yes, I belong to both of them. However, there are some movies that I just can't seem to find unless I want to buy the movie or pay about $8 - $10 to rent something through the mail. Uggh. I've come up with two new methods for finding movies. Maybe someone out there can help. Read on for details. 1. Tivo, Digital Cable and a DVR Is there anyone in the group who has the trifecta of Tivo, digital cable and a DVR? I've become sucked into a project to watch a lot of older, obscure movies (including foreign ones, short movies, documentaries and experimental ones). I learned that these movies are shown on tv once in a while. Theoretically, someone could record a movie for me, burn it onto a DVD and send it. In exchange, I will send you cards, my first born (and any other subsequent offspring) and any other means of gratitude I can come up with. I will do the searching and let you know that at 5am on August 12 on channel 1234, I would like you to tape the "Incredible Foolishness of Me". I will pay for the DVRs and postage. 2. University Libraries. I have learned that University Libraries often have huge collections of rare and obscure movies. The problem for me is getting access to them. For the libraries around me, the university will give me a library card for a mere $150-$200 donation. Yikes! I'm hoping there is something cheaper. I'm hoping that someone with a connection to a University Library (as a student, faculty or staff member) would be willing to request + mail some movies to me, which I'd watch immediately and return. I'd pay all the shipping (and gas if needed). Hopefully I am not talking about a large quantity of movies (that I cannot find any other way). I have learned that I can watch items from the Johns Hopkins University collection in Baltimore -- as long as I watch them at the Audiovisual Department. Everyone in OBC knows i am a long time Yankee fan since childhood when my father took me to a Yankee game to see baseball's greatest player, Mantle, and i really think that Maris belongs in the Hall Of And that Mazeroski & Koufax should be ineligable for the Hall of Fame because of the World Series of 1960 & 1963. So of course i would think Mantle's cards would be at the top of want lists for collectors of 60's Topps cards. But after talking to other collectors at the card shops who are trying to complete 60's topps sets and asking them about their 10 most wanted cards the same player's cards come up again and again. Mantle's 62 and 63 topps cards are NOT on their 10 most wanted cards lists but Willie McCovey is! His name i hear again and again for most wanted cards. The cards that seem to be the most wanted are McCovey's 62 and 63 topps cards, #'s 544 & 490.It seems everyone needs that 62 topps McCovey # 544.And his 63 topps # 490 seems to be the next most wanted. Why are those cards so hard to find? That is a question for the experts here- As to cards wanted by collectors building 60's sets McCovey seems to be the man- (and guess which 2 cards i am bringing to the National with me as trade bait?)- ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2006 19:48:14 -0700 From: Peter Iversen Subject: national...? Well, of course, it's the Rocky Mountain Card Collectors Convergence. Now, before we discuss such an event, please, allow me to give you some visions and set the table. Number one, the setting. Colorado. This time of year, you can tune into many a newscast on your television and witness footage of any number of large fires that might be burning out here in the great west, Colorado, included. Simply put, it's hot and dry here. VERY hot and dry. Two, on any given Sunday morning, yes, even here, your local IHOP,Denny's, Perkin's and/or Village Inn or other breakfast joint, might be jammed, but NOT the freeways. Not here. Well, table set. This morning we had both. Due to a very serious accidenton the freeway, (...and thank GOODNESS it wasn't me for a change.) along with our chosen meeting joint, traffic was jammed and most of us needed detours and lost and found highway guides just to get us there. ...and by the time we did arrive and climb out of our cars, we were greeted with a cold and nasty, misty rain. Never fear, we were all inside and once the packed restaurant staff finallyrealized that first four, then six, then eight, then twelve of us were going to be sitting down, they hustled up some tables for us and treated us right. Very right. Oh, and did I mention how BIG it is out here in the west? Well you never mind that, because big Colorado or no, it is nothing compared to the big hospitality seven great traders and collectors all displayed toward one another and our families. Bill Blakslee and his, Jim Goodreidand his, Ray Luurs, Josh Martinez, Guy Mitchell, Jim Silva and me and mine, all shared cards, stories, food, drink and fun. It was nice. Very nice, guys, thank you very much. I personally can't wait to do it again. ...and, if any of you ever get the opportunity to meet with and spend some time with any of them, my experience today tells me you could easily do a lot worse. Alas, all good things must end, and only all too soon after we had just met, it was time to pack up and leave again. Unfortunately for us, Guy and Jim G and his, had other obligations for the afternoon and couldn't join up with us for the game, however, all was not lost because when you lose some, you usually gain some, and that is just what we did when Josh was able to be joined by his, the amazing Denise. Why amazing, you ask? Well, let me tell you. This brings us back to that hot and dry thing that we are so used to here in Colorado. However, when you have the cold, high altitude air at twelve and fourteen thousand feet up, pushing down into the scalding, dry, 90+ degree heat of the prairie plains, well, you get the perfect mix to make storms. Phooey, who cares? Not us here, because we just sort of push those storms on, farther east into theplains and the Midwest, where you folks out there get the wet soakers and tornado alley stuff that we send you. Most all we ever see here are "spit showers." A few bolts of lightning, (To start more fires, of course!) a couple of bags of wind, (Well yes, to fan those fire flames, and to send on out toward tornado alley.) and a few drops of rain that most of the time, dry up even before they hit the ground because it's so dry and the humidity is so low. If we ever do see true rainfall here, again, those storm clouds are always pushed on to the east and forty minutes later Colorado is left with sunshine, rainbows, and sometimes even lollipops for the kids. Right back to the hot and dry. Not today. In fact, when we arrived at the stadium, I was expecting to seejust that, sunshine and rainbows, but instead we were greeted with that same, nasty gray sky, cold breeze, and a wet, rainy mist. ...and it didn't go away. But neither did these amazing folks in Colorado. That's why I said amazing. Gray skies, soggy peanuts, and wet clothing couldn't dampen ourspirits. In fact, after drinking half of our beverages and putting them down in the cupholders to clap and jeer, we then looked down only to see we had been blessed by the rain which had nearly filled those cups back up again. Woo hoo, free beer !!! Er, ah, well, all right, maebea I had one too many, but when the home team loses, your beer is half watered down and you're soaked to the bone and shivering and freezing, yet everyone is still smiling, shaking hands and asking each other to do it again, you just KNOW you're among good friends. So, if you ever see another "RMCCC" posting about some sort of an event outhere again, ya'll better get your tails in here, read about it, and get out here, because if you do, you're going to find yourself in the midst of some BIG hospitality and BIG fun. Colorado. It's amazingly BIG out here !!!!! p.s. Oh, and there is a Walker guarantee going around that we can arrange at least ten years of Rockies game meets like this and you'll NEVER get rained on like we did today. I guarantee it!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: LUURSCJG@aol.com To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, July 09, 2006 6:32 PM Subject: [OBC-Thanks] Thanks all ... ... ... ... ... ... As a high-school phenom in Georgia, Wyatt struck out 23 Oglethorpe University batters in a game. Signed by the Tigers, he had 16 straight victories for Evansville (Three-I League) in 1929. Then, for eight frustrating seasons, Wyatt was expected to become a top American League pitcher but was sidetracked year after year by injuries. From 1929 through 1937, he compiled a 26-43 AL record. In 1931 his 1.53 ERA tied Dizzy Dean for the Texas League crown. After an MVP season in the American Association in 1938, he was purchased by the Dodgers and became a four-time All-Star. Wyatt went 15-14 for Brooklyn in 1940, tying for the NL lead with five shutouts. In 1941 he and teammate Kirby Higbe each won 22 games, tops in the majors, to lead the Dodgers to the pennant. Wyatt's seven shutouts were also the ML high. He threw two complete games in the World Series, beating the Yankees 3-2 in the second game, but losing 3-1 in the Series finale. Over the next two seasons Wyatt was 33-12, but he faded in 1944. Wyatt was unafraid to knock a batter down, earning the reputation as a headhunter. Joe DiMaggio called him "the meanest guy I ever saw." When Wyatt became a ML pitching coach (Phillies, Braves), his pupils said he encouraged them to throw at hitters as well. Grant brought along a copy of the 1965 issue of Baseball Illustrated - the cover features a slew of that era's Who's Who in baseball (including Willie, Hank, Sandy, Brooks & Mickey), and a copy of The Sporting News from October 15, 1966 - a full 11 days after I was born. The Dodgers' Jim Lefebvre is featured on the cover (prior to the O's laying the broom on the Bums ) and inside is a great spread on the pennant-winning Dodgers. I've beenso busy since getting back home, I haven't had a chance to sit down and read these, but I'm sure looking forward to it. The fishing trip was a blast too - caught lots of salmon and halibut, saw tons of bald eagles, had a lot of laughs, saw lots of beautiful scenery. I can't wait to move back to the Pacific Northwest so I can see beauty like that all the time. Grant - thanks a bunch for your hospitality and the great reading material. Can't wait to renew our face-to-face friendship the next time I come through. For those that get a chance, Vancouver is a really beautiful city. Stop by and have some wings & beer - you won't be disappointed. ================= To: "Grant" , Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2006 07:29:02 +0000 From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Question of the Day..... This Spring/Summer project was to get a septic tank and field put in. I hired one of the locals to do it, and have now learned that if you are having any work contracted, make sure you are there to supervise. Ken appears to be of Cro Magnon stock, smells more like a wooly mammoth, but he works hard. When I got up there this trip, the septic tank was in the ground (well most of it) and the field was in. The tank was unfortunately sitting about four feet out of the ground. I called him up, and he actually set an Island record=85.he showed up to dig the hole deeper and re-situate the tank properly a day earlier than he said he would be there. (Usually the locals will tell you they will be there on Tuesday, but which one it will be is anyone=92s guess=85.). He agreed that he screwed up and got right to work. The two of us wrestled this 1250 gallon tank out of the ground and he started digging. Thank God he hadn=92t had the drive to actually put water in the tank. He dug the hole 3 feet deeper, dropped the tank back in, and took off home. He wasn=92t real happy when I called him back, because the tank was now in the hole backwards, with the inlet and outlet reversed. Not exactly the flow pattern I had in mind=85.this time I allowed him to wrestle the tank out of the ground by himself and reverse it. All in all, not a bad week=85..minimal blood loss, and no serious injuries arising. Going back up in a week or so with the parts that =93Mr. Brain Surgeon=94 forgot to order for the system. But non sports are another matter. No one thinks these kinds of cards are worth anything so i am constantly finding and buying mixed batches of non sports cards from the 60's to the present at yard sales and swap meets cheap. Some non sports i have never found at yard sales include the 1967 Leaf Star Trek cards and the 1965 Donruss King Kong. These cards are just too rare and too old to show up at a yard sale. But just about everything else seems to show up at one time or another. Also a lot more people seem to have purchased non sports cards in the past than baseball cards. Baseball cards seem to lose half the collector base to even start with. How many women collect baseball cards and bought them as kids? How many women are active in OBC?Women aren't into baseball cards i have found.I am the only woman at the local card shop bid board. But non sports are bought by both men and women so there is a larger collector base and a lot more non sports out there. A lot of people bought cards of movies and Tv shows that were popular years ago but are forgotten by most people now so no one wants them and there are boxes full to be found cheap at yard sales. And some people aren't forgotten but no one seems to want or place any value on their cards. I have been told i am the only person in the area who wants any cards of Michael Jackson.I can usually buy that entire 1984 set of his for less than $1.For some reason Michael Jackson has lost favor with the Star Wars is popular but who cares about Grease,Welcome Back Kotter,Charlie's Angels,Saturday Night Beaver, sorry-Fever(Tim again;sure happy i am the only woman active in the group right now or down comes the axe), Tron, Magnum P.I.( yes, gang over 90% of the card collectors now never heard of Tom Sellack),6 Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman,Kung Fu (asking for that set will elicit a very negative reaction because the star, David Carradine, got the part over Bruce Lee who auditioned for it but the producers gave it to Carradine because they thought American audiences would not like an Asian actor as much in the part.Kind of interesting that they thought American audiences would accept an American playing the Kung Fu character more. But Bruce Lee has become a legend after he died and because he was passed over for the part in Kung Fu the mention of the show or even David Carradines name to a lot of people offends them.) Hey OBCers, Inspired by Grant's latest Ramble I thought a quick non-sports card note to let you know what's new in my life would be appropriate. Recently, I was diagnosed with A. A. A. D. D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide car needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the porch that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage under the table, and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only 1 check My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to desk where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside that I don't accidentally knock it over. I see that the Coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the catches my eye--they need to be watered. I set the Coke down on the counter, and I discover my reading glasses I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to At the end of the day: ----the car isn't washed, ----the bills aren't paid, ----there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter, ----the flowers don't have enough water, ----there is still only 1 check in my check book, ----I can't find the remote, ----I can't find my glasses, ----and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail. Do me a favor, will you? Ifthis isn't you yet, your day is coming!! I need to get my show tickets. I'm really playing with the idea of getting a VIP pass. The Naxcom site has tix listed for 94 bucks but there is no mention of picking up the badge at will call/Naxcom booth like they do with the single tickets. Are the VIP passes from Naxcom or from another poster? Is it really worth the extra bucks for the VIP pass? I know you get some cool cards, which I would probably like to sell at the show. I know some of you have VIP'd. What did you do with the giveaway cards and how much were they worth? I'd rather turn a LeBron James into some studs for the 1960 set. While I'm on the west coast, I plan on taking in a Red Sox/A's game out in Oakland (7/26) and the Dodgers/Nats a couple days later (Fri.). There's also a little card show that's running over the course of the week, which I plan to attend if only to hang out with a few of you guys. Of course, there's the swap on Sat. night, which will be one of the highlights of the trip (location is still TBD, but everyone is welcome to fly in for the event). I'm staying in Sylmar the following week if anyone knows something cool to do after the Nats. Up for exchange is an exciting Colorado Rockies, children's growth chart. I say "exchange" because I'm not looking to profit from this but I would appreciate something in return, just to help cover postage. Perhaps a simple hit or two to my wants or a couple unopened packs of '06 Topps or something like that. This growth chart is a cloth chart that depicts a full length picture of "Dinger" the Dinosaur, who is the Colorado Rockies mascot. The chart portion of the cloth contains half inch measuring marks so you can write on it to record and chart your child's growth up to 66 inches. The cloth is made of cotton, right here in the USA, and it is designed to hang, perhaps on a wallor on the back of a door. It is sort of "scroll" like, with a wooden dowelsewn in at the top, and at the bottom for a weight. It has thick, shoelacelike string tied around the top wooden dowel so it can be hung from a hookor a nail, or some other protruding object. It is also quite lightweight so it should also hang nicely from, and would not pull down one of those "sticker type," plastic hooks on the back of a door or something like that. Itcould even be hung from a nail with an existing picture over it. For thoseof you who are decorators and / or like to color coordinate the room, the cloth is bright white with black measuring lines, and Dinger is Colorado Rockies purple, with black and gray, and has a dark, flesh colored face and dinosaur horns. It contains a small, "Health One" logo at the bottom, along with an itemized list of the local hospitals that are in that organization. It is much nicer than many other growth charts that I've seen that are made of paper or plastic, or have been laminated, and since it is scroll type,it will easily compact and roll up to be stored away in a memories box, tolater come back out for a roast at a high school or college graduation party or something like that. I have two of them, in case you have two toddler's or two children that youwould like to see smile and have some fun as you chart their growth rate over the years. They are NO longer in what we consider MINT condition, because they were taken out of the shrink wrap and looked at, but they are brandnew and they have not been used. They were handed out to us as a promotionat the Rockies game during our recent Rocky Mountain card collectors gathering earlier this month, but since I don't have any children and I wont be having any grandchildren either, I'd like to see these used and appreciatedin a better home. This is perfect for the expecting family, for young parents, or as a nice gift for someone in your family you know who has young children. In case I get more requests than I have charts, I will not give these away FCFS, so include the approximate height of the intended recipient(s), and I will use that to determine who gets them. The measuring marks begin at 24 inches tall, so in just in case we need to decide who gets who doesn't, I will choose those who are closest to that 24" inch mark. This method should send them to those who will get the maximum usage from them. Feel free to ask, if you have any questions. ================= Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2006 17:03:15 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "T.J. If I ever figure out how to tell the Baseball's Great Hall of Fame Exhibits apart those would get listed. Fortunately some were not reprinted so I know those are from 1948, including Ruth (batting, not the rare with bats version). They are almost as confusing to me as the 1936 Goudey wide print versions. My trip didn't exactly start offon the right foot, but I'm hoping to change my karma a little now. I left the house at 5AM for a 6:45 flight. Since I don't have any friends that would drive me to the airport at 5 in the morning, and not wanting to pay a small fortune for two weeks of airport parking, I decided to take public transportation. After a series of near misses (I arrived at the bus stop just after it left, I arrived at the train station as the train was pulling out, etc.) and a couple of blunders (taking the wrong bus at the airport and walking with a couple heavy bags in the wrong direction a few times) I safely arrived at the check-in for my flight at... almost 7AM (or about 10 minutes after it departed). After getting a stand-by ticket for a flight that left a mere three hours later (and had a longer layover in Baltimore), we pushed back from the gate at Logan and were told that there was some kind of mysterious (to me anyway) air traffic block over Long Island and that all traffic headed south was being delayed. This didn't have anything to do with the tropical storm (Beryl) that was by now way off the New England coast. Well, it ended up making my layover at BWI a lot shorter - and I did have a seatreserved this time. However, by the time we all boarded, the pilot comes on the PA and says they're waiting for some required license in order to take off. (Did the pilot forget to bring his license to work?!?) Anyway, we had to wait for some piece of paper to get copied and run over to the plane, which took another half hour. Sad part was that I had decided to fly to Charlotte (and then to CA a few days later) because it would probably cost just as much in gas to drive, but it would save time. Yet here I am in Baltimore at about the same time it would've taken to drive here ::sigh:: Once I finally arrived in Charlotte, I spent the next couple days hanging out with my brother and his family (wife, daughter, mother-in-law and about a half dozen cats), although this time was different, because I had to rent a car and stay at a hotel - which was a lot nicer than the couch at his place Today I had a 5:30 PM flight, so in order to avoid a repeat of Friday's adventure I have arrived at the airport about three hours early (and that was after I returned the rental car, which took no time at all because I wasn't in any kind of hurry). After getting through security, I noticed a business center with free wireless internet (I had to pay for it at Logan while I waited for that second flight three hours later). Well, I'll end this here and get back to playing some online poker for a couple hours. Show starts in about 48 hours. The best part of sending out cards is making someone else happy. How can that happen when you never know if the cards ever got to their destination? Cards have been known to get lost in the mail but how can you tell? Years ago, I would email a recipient that hadn't responded to a package to ask if they received it, but this is rather awkward. I would feel pushy and they would be embarrassed, (most likely). Eventually, I just stopped looking for cards for people that continually do not respond. NOTE: This does NOT mean that if you haven't received cards from me in awhile you fall into this category. Several of you, (you know who you are), are a level or two above me and are pretty hard for me to hit. There are also a couple of OBCers with condition issues that I can seldom deal with. That reminds me of a question. How can guys with so many lists to hit, (Mike Rich, Dan Austin, etc.), be so frickin' hard to hit? I mean, when I get dupes, I already know if Morganti or Svetecz need them, (they don't), because I've stared blankly at their pages for years. I always see something I haven't seen before on the Rich or Austin page but still don't have any. Sheeesh. Anyway, point being, acknowledge, acknowledge, acknowledge, and say thanks too. BTW, Gee Mike, I hope I'm not one of those guys that didn't acknowledge you. How embarrassing would that be? I better check under that pile of stuff over there. I think that may have been the show where he had his mug printed on every bag they handed out at the door. You could tell an OBC'er at that show because most of us were carrying our bags inside out. I have never bought anything fron Mr. Mint and likely never will, even on the rare occasion when he DOES have cards to sell at his table - most of the time when I see stuff there, it's going into an auction or he's massaging his enormous ego by showing off what he's bought and only sells his stuff to a select group of dealers later. If you want more info, buy his book. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to sign it for you. Then you can read all about him and his huge strides in improving the sports card industry ... although I think the book is better suited for something more along the lines of kindling. Personally, I had a great time buying cards at that 2000 National. I was still working on the 1952 Topps set and was down to mostly high numbers and a few of those black/red variations if I recall. I remember picking up no less than two DOZEN high numbers at various tables. One of my first experiences there was seeing a #311, which I didn't pull the trigger on at $1100 - it was a mere $100 more than my target price and I didn't want to spend such a large amount with four days left in the show. I'm still kinda kicking myself over that one, since Levi Bleam ended up buying it when I went back the next day (and he sells all his Mantles for a minimun of twice the price I coulda had it for.) Another factor is what day you attend the show. Sometimes if the show isn't as well attended, dealers will pull out the rug fron under their prices on the last day trying to make their table fees. One year, a dealer that had cards selling in a dollar binder, had the same binders marked half price on Saturday and 3/$1 by the last day. There's plenty of dealers at the show with OBC quality cards to sell. Find me at the show and I'll likely locate a table or two that you'll be able to spend a good portion of your day/budget going through picking up bargains. Even if less than 5% of the dealers there are OBC friendy, a couple make up for the 95% that aren't. On another note related to the show - I FORGOT MY HAT!! I remembered to pack my regular OBC baseball cap (now in tipton mint condition), but not the giant 'mad hatter' style cap everyone loves ;-) I'm bringing a substitute, but it's not the same - and I'll have to leave this one here, since it won't fold down neatly and fit in my luggage. So, if you're looking for me on the floor, think gold ;-) I should be there a little after 9 today (Thurs.), since I got back from Oakland late last night and need to rent a car before I can drive down there and pick up my VIP stuff. My Oakland side trip is a story in itself. I'll probably share it at a later time, but let me say that yesterday's Red Sox loss was a bigger disappointment than meets the eye. I sure wish I could be there, but I had to get home Friday night. I arrived in Anaheim Wednesday morning and beat it over to my hotel. Afterpicking up my show pass at the convention center, I met my nephew and family for a quick lunch. At 3:30 I met up with Sal Domino, Kent Goto, Kevin Martens, and Ray Luurs. After a mere one hour of standing in line, we made it onto the show floor for the evening sneak preview. At the very entrance was Mr. Mint sitting at an empty table, just as Linda described. The National makes the Tacoma Dome show look like a garage sale (I've been to bigger mall shows than the last Tacoma Dome show). There were a lot of high ticket items around, and hundred dollar bills were flowing like water. But there were indeed bargains to be had, and I had several OBC veterans at my disposal to point the way to them and teach me the ropes. I went to Anaheim with guarded hopes that I could find some nice PCL memorabilia, but there wasn't a whole lot there. The best part by far was being able to meet ten (10) different OBC'ers for the first time: Sal Domino, Kent Goto, Kevin Martens, Ken Morganti, Ray Luurs, Gordie Calvert, Erik Greenwood, Joshua Levine, Marshall West, and Linda Fitak. What a great group ofpeople! Thursday we spent the day at the show, and then went to dinner in the evening. Sal, Kent, and I were going to take Sal's rental car and meet the restat the Red Robin. So the three of us went over to the parking garage to get the car which was parked in section C12. The first snag we ran into wasthat every floor had a section C12, and Sal and Kent were not certain which floor they had parked on (I had walked over in the morning, so I sure didn't know where the car was). We walked up this aisle and down that aisle on three different levels, all the time Sal pressing the remote on the keys hoping to trigger the car alarm so we could find the sucker. Finally, after a half hour or forty-five minutes of looking I spotted a sign on the outside of the building that said "Car Park 2" and a little light went off in my head. A quick question put to the parking attendant confirmed that Car Park 1 was the building next door. You guessed it, we found the car right off -- AFTER we found the right building! We decided to dedicate the experience as a tribute to Big Al. The dinner at the Red Robin was fun, and welcome as Sal, Kent, and I had worked up an extra big appetite! Geordie picked up the tab for which we all owe him a huge thanks. Friday, we spent another whole day browsing and shopping at the show. I left a little early to catch a shuttle to the airport. Several of the guys were headed to a ballgame after the show. I sure wish I could have joined them. Over the course of the show I received some nice cards from several folks. Marshall West hit my 1962 list for the first time in several months. Linda Fitak also hit my 1962 list along with several "eclectic" cards whichwere a great delight. Ray Luurs hit me with a 1952 Mothers Cookies of Jim Davis. It's always great to get a PCL hit, especially when it is a Seattle Rainier! Sal Domino also hit me with a PCL card - a Seattle Popcorn Card of Ted Schreiber. There apparently was only one (1) Seattle Popcorn card at the National (I'm serious!) and Sal found it for me. I am truly impressed. Kevin Martins slipped me a multi-card hit to my (19)44 collection. Thanks Kevin! And of course, Geordie bought me dinner! I think that covers it, but my apologies to anyone I might have forgotten. I sure hope I can go to another major card show some time. -Dave Fallen ================= Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2006 04:01:35 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: ChicoD1@aol.com Subject: Pics from the national Here is a bunch of pics from the National. Years ago this was amajor show with literally hundreds of dealers. there are 2 Gibraltar locations, and I live right betweent hem, about 25-40 minutes from each. I went Friday nite sine I had a free admission coupon (saved $2) and spent a grand total of $4. Included was 23 of 24 1971 Dell BB Team Stamps of the Detroit Tigers. Missing only Bob Reed. So now 2 of us are looking for this oh so valuable stamp. I saw a group lot of 27 assorted 1941 Goudeys at the show. I called Andy Cook on Saturday and asked for values. I went back tday and spend more money on a single lot than I think I ever have before and got the Goudeys. With the 5 already had, I now have 22 different and 7 variation colors. I have 3 dupes, #7 Ambler green and (2) #17 Tamulis in blue to swap. I continued to look around and picked up some 1970 Tyco Super Balls. I am now up to 78 of 288. Need to check Bob Neill's list, as I got a few dupes and I think he is the only other collector of these in the group. Then found a dealer that had a stack of the Wrestling series of 1948 Topps Magic Photos. Picked up the 8 he had, resulting in 2 more dupes. Another set that rarely gets any action. I then paid around 5% of book for a trimmed 1933 Sports King #1 Ty Cobb. For not going to the National, I sure spent a lot of money today on cards. Every so often I get a Sports King. I now have 7 of the 48. Hope the National group fared as well. Itallegedly came out of the estate of Casey Stengel, although I don't have aclue how he wound up with it. Mastro wanted $750 for it, so it did not make the trip back to Olympia with me. Other than that it was pretty ordinary stuff -- a Ty Cobb bat, World Series rings, stuff like that. SETS KILLED OFF: None. I got within one of my 1969 Topps set but nobody had a beater Nolan Ryan card. I didn't want to pay three figures for one that would be too good for the rest of my set. THE COOLEST THING I BOUGHT: A 1933 Wheaties Minneapolis Millers card of Walter Hicher. These cards are not too common and represent an early Wheaties effort at a sports promotion. That they produced cards of Millers players is not so surprising as they sponsored the Millers broadcasts on radio. What IS surprising is that Wheaties also produced a Seattle Indians set in 1933. I don't know what the connection is there. The Seattle Indians cards are extremely rare - Mark Macrae for example has none and has only seen two. Few dealers even knowof them. So, the Millers card is likely as close as I will ever come to owning a 1933 Wheaties Seattle Indians card. The Millers card is pretty cool in its own right though. THE MOST DISAPPOINTING: Continuing with the PCL theme, the most disappointing thing for me was the lack of PCL items. I did find 21 1949 Bowman PCL cards at Clean Sweep (overpriced - one Seattle card with paper loss was $160), two dealers had a few 1948 Signal Oil cards, two or three had some 1947 Signal Oil cards but only the most common California ones (none of Seattle players). There were very few Obaks or Zeenuts, exactly one Seattle Popcorn card (Thanks again Sal!) and only a handful of Union Oil cards - I did pick up a couple of these - but all-in-all, not much. Oh yeah, a few Mothers Cookies cards but thetypical asking price was around $25. Another disappointment was that I finally found a dealer that had several "cards" from the 1975 and 1976 Top Trophies Omaha Royals. I have been looking for a long time for the Top Trophies "card" of Gary Martz, but alas that one wasn't in the stack. Tantalizingly close . . . UNGRADED CARDS: YES! In fact I found ungraded cards from the 50's and 60's for as littleas 50 cents. Commons could be had at some tables for $1 each (52 - 54 a little higher, like $2 or $3). Of course, there were tables selling nice condition ungraded cards as well. Lots of ungraded materials were available. My favorite buy was a B18 blanket of Chief Meyers for six bucks. Friday at the show... Left at 12:30 knowing there would be traffic. Arrived at 4:00. Traffic in L.A. sucks. Met up with a few friends from the Net54 prewar board. Walked around with them for a bit. Tracked all t205s this afternoon at the show. Only 411 at the show including over 150 at Levi Bleam's table alone. After the show, went to a special dinner with the Net54 folk and got to talk to some of the most amazing people who own some of the most amazing cards. It was sponsored by REA and Rob Lifson and SGC. Good food, drink and company. Sat with the Hardemans for a bit and talked about T205s (Shawn!!---they want the article and even might be a cover piece!!). Friday purchases: Most interesting and best purchase at the show was a Witmor Candy card of Jake Daubert. Bought really cheaply! 3 '55 Bowmans Left house at 1:00 and made it to the show by 3:00...finally made it back to Roger's table and was picking through his Exhibits and oddball stuff. Geordie and Tim Fitak found me there. Both recommended another dealer on the other side of the show who was having a 90% off sale. I could not find anything I really needed or wanted there. On the way back to Roger's, I found Kent and Sal and Tim bothering Bill Henderson. I waited until Sal, Tim, and Kent had softened him up, I ended up buying a few things from Bill at a steep discount. Went to dinner to with the whole OBC contingent that we could find (never did meet up with Marshall or Pat, Dave went home early, and Erik was only there the previous day). Back to Red Robin who was very nice to us and let us pretty much take over several tables. Traded cards, jokes, food, conversation, and fun. Big thanks to Kurt Turdout who sent along a box to pick through and Kevin Savage who helped pay for dinner! Saturday purchases... 4 '64 Topps 9 '53 Topps 5 '35 Goudey 4/1 incl. Bottomley and the Waner Bros. (Henderson sold them to me for a total of $30) 1 '55 Bowman 4 Exhibits incl. that darn tough Ashburn spelled correctly card. 1 '71 coin 1 George Burke photo of a Jimmy Wilson. Overall a great show, great friends, and a great time. See the thanks server for more thanks. ================= To: "Ramblings \(OBC\)" Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2006 10:50:02 -0700 From: "Geordie Calvert" Subject: National report Hi gang! Day 1 - Thursday My plans for months were to go all five days, but work got in the middle ofthat. Spent Sunday thru Wednesday in Las Vegas for the World Furniture Market, where I stayed at the Bellagio (nice hotel!) and played pai gow in myoff time. After flying back Wednesday night, my wife informs me that she'd like to go along so she can do a little shopping and also scout out housing for our son Tyler, who is going to be a freshman at Cal State Long Beachthis fall. Barb is NOT a fast packer, so we finally get out the door around 11:30. Quick stop for gas and we're on the way. As Josh alluded to earlier. LA traffic sucks! We hit south LA around 3:15 and got to our hotel just after 5. Called Ray on his cell - Ray says the show closes at 5. Ray must be lost in a time warp, 'cause it's after 5 and he's still there. Side note - at the Nat it's very easy to get caught in atime warp and lose track of where you are and what time it is. So I head over to the convention center, get my VIP pass, & get my goodie bag. Didn't glance at the bag or the contents so I don't get to see Mr. Mints mug. Come to think of it, I didn't see Mr. Mint all week either. Very nice. After calling (S)al, I met up with him and Linda. Introductions, handshakes, two more OBCers met. I've got just under an hour, so we part and I do an extremely quick walkthrough. First table I stop at is Jack's Cards. I think all of us that were there will agree that Jack did us very nicely. I spent time at his table several more times during the week. Headed over to the Topps booth - they're doing an Allen & Ginter retro set and are handing out daily promos - one of Thursday's is Kirk Gibson - gotta have it. Their deal is that if you open three packs of any current product, you get a promo card. I race over and grab a $39 box of series 2, rip three packs & get the card. I don't even glance at the cards. Meet out front after the showand meet Kent Goto, Kevin & Joanne Martens and Dave Fallen, and see Josh, Ken and Ray, who I've met before. Head over to dinner at Red Robins, whereKen, Kevin, Ray, Joanne & I wait for a loooooong time for "Where's (S)al",Kent & Dave. I think a 45-minute search for the car was the excuse. Ah, finally, dinner is served. Great conversation & pretty good eats. After dinner, pictures & a 10-minute walk home, I recap the show with my wife, who won't come near us. She thinks we're strange. Well, yes, we are. I go through the VIP bag - mostly junk. Went through the three packs of Topps UV I busted and noticed that one of the cards was kinda rare. Topps had a late insert into the set that carried a RC1 designation instead of a regular number - it was seeded at a 1-in-7500 pack rate. That's on evilBay right now - I've got 1952 Topps plans for that turnover. Day 2 - Friday Breakfast with Barb, then off to the show. My goal was to finish off at least three sets: 1957 Topps, 1961 Fleer and 1965 Topps Embossed. Scout a lot of tables, make a few purchases here & there. Locate a good portion of the cards I need, but make few buys - prices seem to be pretty high. There are a handful of tables that hold some promise, so I write them down for a future visit. Head back to Jack's Cards and do some serious damage to my football lists, especially 1969 and 1970. Those are now very close to completion. In fact the only football list that didn't see any action at all was 1972 - what is it about 1972 and high numbers, anyway? Picked up quite abit here & there throughout the rest of the day, but no real highlights, except two. One was an Rams helmet autographed by my boyhood hero, Jack Youngblood. My baseball hero was the Garv - we'll get to him in a sec. The other highlight was this card: Josh, you were right - the guy's name was Thomas. Now, I'm not real sure why it was a highlight, but Jack (Jack's Cards) was so surprised anyone wanted it (only an OBCer would) that he gave it to me. I finally got a chance to Google the situation last night, and sure enough, on August 21, 1962, Valmy Thomas indeed "got shot in the streets" of Atlanta - here's a link to the story: http://home.nyc.rr.com/vibaseball/summer62.html After the show, (S)al, Kent, Ken, Ray & I head over to Dodger Stadium for the game. I rode with Ken, the others in (S)al's car. (S)Al actually beat us to the stadium, where we are told the game is sold out. Sold out? The Dodgers? Against the Nationals? The Dodgers that are 1-12 since the break? Impossible. Well, it was possible, as it was Steve Garvey bobblehead night. Ah, that explains it. Again, we're told the game is sold out, but (S)al walks right up and buys tickets as Ken & I park in Lot 7 - Peter & Josh, you know where I'm talking about. I call (S)al and ask him, did you walkup the left or right ramp. The left one, he says. Ken & I walk up and there is no sign of the other three. 15 minutes of dropped calls and "we're near the transformer" directions later, we find them at the other end of the RIGHT ramp. Folks, we might have a new directions king. We find our seats in left field. Waaay up there in left field. Some comments heard from the peanut gallery that is OBC. "Is that Uecker in front of us?" "We're actually above the foul pole" "Are those eagles down there?" Yeah, we werethat high up. The game was great, as the Boys in Blue finally put together some consective hits and win going away 13-1. It had the potential to get ugly early though, as the Dodgers gave up a run in the second to trail 1-0. I had visions of mass chaos as the discontented rabble vented their frustration by raining Garvs onto the field from the upper decks. Speaking ofbobbleheads, (S)al is convinced that these were originally supposed to be used as Mike Marshalls. I thought they could have been Billy Ashleys. Whatever, they're Garveys now. A nightmare getting out of the parking lot, and we left after the 7th, as good Dodger fans do. The Garv brought people out of the woodwork - LA traffic sucks. Day 3 - Saturday After perusing most of the tables on Friday, it's time to make progress. 1965 Embossed is first to fall - the Banks and Clemente were found on Friday. Found the Mantle and Killebrew on Saturday morning for a very nice price. Next up was 1961 Fleer - last card was the #89 checklist featuring Sisler & Traynor. Spent some money at Roger's table - he had some great buys on1948 Bowman football and 1952 Bowman large & small football. Dave & AdamsCard World had a separate table for singles (they had a large corner for unopened stuff) where I found some very nice deals at 90% off. '72 highs for $1.50, '66 Mantle for $35, lots of other stuff. Found three '33 Goudey Dodgers for $30, including Lefty O'Doul. '52 Pafko for $100. Lots of damage at Bill Henderson's table. While there, Bill tells me that we're starting to show up there. I look around don't see anyone I recognize. He points, and there's Erik Greenwood, who I haven't met before. That was pretty cool. Still no sign of Marshall West - rumor has it that he's already left. Too bad. Throughout the day, little by little I'm chipping away at the major goal, the '57s. Towards the end, I'm down to 4 cards - all mid series:283 Covington, 284 Zimmer, 286 Richardson and 306 Darrell Johnson. The Richardsons are out there, but I can't find one for less than $45, and I'm unwilling to pay that. Lowest Zimmer I found was $27.50, found a Johnson forrelatively cheap (picked that up on Sunday morning before I left) and I never saw a Covington, not one. After the show, Tim Fitak hands me the Zimmer, which he found at some table for a lot less than I could find one for - thanks a bunch Tim! After the show, we meet up to head over to the swap. Josh informs us that the pizza joint Ken has found us is in a pretty bad neighborhood, so we head back to the Red Robin. Parking there was terrible, as there are two other restaurants that share the same parking lot. Finally found a place to park, and we settle in. Ken grabs my '65 list and cuts it in half, dropping 150+ cards off it - thanks Ken! The only cards I have left for the most part are divisible by 5, which means lots of stars left. I'm a lot farther along than I thought I would be, though! Most of us are there by now, except for Peter, who we know is showing up late, and (S)al and Kent. What'd wewait, an hour or so? What is with guys with "al" in their name? Food is ordered, cards start to fly. Everyone is finally gathered. As always, when any amount of OBCers get together, the conversation is great. Kevin Savage paid for dinner, Kurt Tourdot supplied some trade fodder. Picked up a '65 RBI leader card with Mantle from Kent (thanks!) and a couple Bell Brand Jim Gilliams and a '65 batting leaders lfrom Peter (thanks!). Back to the hotel and some much-needed sleep. Legs & feet are killing me! Day 4 - Sunday This is going to be a short day, as hotel checkout time is 12:00 and I don't want Barb to have to hang out all day waiting for me. Picked up some supplies and that '57 I mentioned earlier - down to just the Covington and Richardson, plus a few checklists and the game cards. Only OBCer I see is Ken. Wanted to go by Kevin Savage's table to thank him, plus pick up a '71 near set, but he's already gone. Also meant to go by & meet Mark Macrae, butforgot. Out the door by 11:15. Had a great time at the show - met six great OBCers, had a lot of laughs, found some great deals. Can't wait for the next one in three years. ================= Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2006 01:48:06 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "jimbo777777" Subject: Birthday Project I'm resurrecting my long dormant birthday project. Is next year's in London by ant chance? > Take Care, Geno Hey gang, I'm still on vacation in CA for another week, so I won't get to fill up my binders for a while. I'd like to give a brief reply to this e-mail though. There was quite a few cool things to see at the show. BMW Sportscards had a graded Horrors of War set that they proudly proclaimed as the most valuable non-sports set known - valued at half a million dollars. They also sported an authentic autographed Rocket Richard jersey they claimed was worth a quarter million, but I find that hard to believe. Of course, 'THE' Honus Wagner was on display, but I really didn't get a chance to take a closer look at it, it happened to be when there were two camera crews taking pictures at that time. MastroNet had a bunch of neat stuff up for auction too. I think the best two deals I got came on the last two days of the show. On Saturday, I found an unmarked Funny Ring checklist that had some minor front damage priced at $25. The last day, I scored apartially eaten 1965 Mantle for my second set for only $35. He also had a '66 for $30, but I passed, since I wanted to save some money for cards I really needed. That dream didn't last long though, since JD Heckathorn came across an OBC special lot that he let me pick through even before he priced any of the cards. I landed 1960 Mantle, plus 1955 Topps cards of Berra and Mays for $100. I passed the deal on the Mantle onto Sal and pointed him back to JD's table to pick up a Drysdale to get him another couple steps closer on his 1960 set. I killed off quite a few sets at the show including 1970 Kellogg's and Rold Gold, 1975 Kellogg's, 1954 Red Man, 1968 Topps #2(again - thanks to Sal), plus 1958 and 1966 Topps Football. I also came within a couple cards on a bunch of other sets: 1962 Fleer(6 left), 1963 Topps(4) and demolished all my Philly football sets: 1964(4), 1965(9), 1966(4) and 1967(one left - Butkus). the baseball sets were within a card or two of completion, but most of the football sets were 50 or more cards away. I came away with a 600 count box full from what I bought. The biggest disappointments were not being able to find too many T205's for under even $20. I only grabbed one hit to my entire Polar Bear list. I also couldn't track down affordable cards for a few other sets including 1960 Leaf high numbers or any of the remaining Post Cereal SP's on my list... except for an upgrade to Billy Williams' 1963 card. There's still a bunch of dealers with ungraded stuff, but with a show like this, they usually bring out their nicest to display. Apparently it's cooler to sell one card for $1000 than ten for $100 each to make your table fees. I had a gread time at the show anf hanging out with the OBC'ers who made it down to Anaheim. Unfortunately, next year's show is not in London, so you'll have to make your plans to spend a week in Cleveland instead. Hope a few dozen of you can make it. COOLEST THING I SAW: Other than my brief encounters with fellow OBC'ers, I would have to say it would be a dealer I came across that only dealt in oddball items. The PSA 8 and 9 T-cards on display are amazing, but I'd rather see something you rarely come across in any condition, and may actually be affordable. SETS KILLED OFF: None, however, I was able to knock my 53 Color Bowman down to 7, 63 Fleer to 5 and two other sets inside 10 cards - 54 Bowman, 54 Topps, THE COOLEST THING I BOUGHT: A Tipton Christy Mathewson strip card for $3 THE MOST DISAPPOINTING: It would have to be the lack of oddball and regional cards. I was hoping to finish my 60 and/or 61 Bell Brand sets. I did not see a single one. It was also interesting to see the wide variance in pricing for cards in similar condition. I was able to get a solid 57 Whitey Ford that I saw at other tables for three to five times the price. UNGRADED CARDS: I picked up a nice stack at Bill Henderson's table. I also made headway at Kit Young and JD Heckathorn's tables. Most of my hits at the National turned out to be upgrades, but I did add five HOF'ers to my HOF collection, some decent hits to my sets including the aforementioned Ford and a 53 Color Bowman Ashburn from Bill Henderson's table, a 54 Bowman Feller and a couple of type cards.
