If you win that card for anything under $75, you should be reported for theft. In fact, at the prices I've been paying for the SP's in the 48-49 Leaf set (they're so scarce that it might explain why you didn't even know Trucks was in the set) it would be almost worth it for me to fly to CA and put in a dollar bid myself. I teach a course in Advanced Placement U.S. History. For the course research project this year the assignment was to research, do oral interviews with family members and others, and write a narrative of the student's family history going back at five generations or more. It's always interesting to see what the kids find out about their kinfolk. Paul quoted from the last letter his grandfather wrote in World War II before being killed in France. Clayton mentioned how his grandfather had moved to Texas in the 60's but came back to PA after only a couple months because he thought the small company he was working for had no future and now visibly cringes whenever Texas Instruments is mentioned. And then there is John. Probably about the brightest kid in the class, but a little lazy and scatterbrained at times. I scanned through his paper and saw nothing of particular interest. I asked the class if any of them had found anything interesting they would like to share. John mentioned that one of his relatives had been a professional baseball player. I asked where and he said Cleveland. Said the guy's name was Addie Joss. I asked John if he was kidding. He said he wasn't. I asked if he included Joss in his paper since he was a HOFer. John said he hadn't because he wasn't aware of that. (a basic rule of interviewing - follow up!) I told him to write a supplement to his paper about Joss and show his relationship. Next day John comes in with a family tree, showing Joss as a great-uncle on one side of his mothers family. On the other side of his mom's family is another great-uncle, Carl Jung. I asked John if that was the eminent psychiatrist Jung and he said yes. Did he include that in his paper? Nope, so I told him I'd flunk him if he didn't do the paper over and include those two "nobodies". His supplemental submission on those two and their place in the family was twice as long as his original paper. He also included photos of Joss, a copy of his complete major league record and family anecdotes. I truly wish I could write an individual letter each and every one of you, because the Email continuesto pour in and the envelopes continue to pile up and I most sincerely appreciate it. You are all truly very special. However, due to a serious automobile accident that completely totaled my pickup and nearly sapped the entire life out of me, I have not been able to do a thing for many, many months. While at a dead stop on the freeway due to a traffic back-up, I was rear-ended by an uninsured motorist who was traveling near 80 mph. No job, no auto and barely able to move. The whiplash was so vicious that the pain in my head, neck, shoulders and all down my torso, kept me completely confined and out of touch. I was forced to leave the house and stay with family until I could finally start getting up. I still don't believe it, but the doctors claim the only permanent damage is to a few nerves, so for that, I am extremely fortunate. A family member even brought over a gifta while back, but I couldn't open it on my own. I had them unwrap it for me, and when they did, I was presented with a brand new, hobby box of 06 Topps. I had them remove the shrink wrap from the box and open a pack for me, but that is as far as it got. Whoo hoo... ... ...ya gotta just love the smell of that fresh UV, eh? Ha, I didn't have the energy or the heart to ask where my bubble gum was. My head heart too much to chew anything anyway. One half flipped through pack and the rest is still completely untouched. ...just too much pain! Meanwhile, it is still slow going, but I am finally up, back home, looking for new wheels and a new job, and since the envelopes that have arrived in the mail are now so many that they are sliding off my card table, I know itis time to get back into it. I just browsed through more than a week of Email, yet the little number on the bottom, status bar, of Outlook Express shows I still have 7515 pieces of mail to go through. Seventy five HUNDRED pieces of mail? Oh my! I WILL get to all of this, and I WILL try to find some way to climb and reach the card boxes that I have up on high shelves so I can start finding some returns to put back in the mail. My doctor is telling me that I should have been ready for this weeks ago and that it would be good therapy to start a little bending, stretching and lifting. I HATE exercise, and pain, so I've been acting like a wimp about it, but hey, if I get to look at the faces of a few new hits to my wants, it will be worth it. It's going to take some time, but I will catch up to everyone. Sorry for the long read, but thanks for understanding. ================= Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2006 16:09:32 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Linda" Subject: Fool me once shame on you... I figured the stars had aligned and it was a good time to go... it's a rare occasion that I have cash in my pocket (one of the drawbacks of having your checks direct deposited is you never have any cash to spend - which is probably a good thing in my case). Other contributing factors were that I missed the last Ft. Washington show and was getting "carboard DT's" I guess you could call it. Plus, the weather outside was pretty miserable, so there really wan't anything better to do anyway. The e-mail says there's 70 tables at this show, but I'd call them on that claim... and most of the dealers have two tables apiece, so the selection isn't what you might be led to belive. Still, there was a good amount of vintage material to browse - although most of it was either really nice or really expensive or both. One of the lowlights was a very ragged looking 1958 Mantle AS card that was marked: "BV $175 Sell $100". Personally, I would've felt ripped off handing over a twenty for the card, so it'll probably be there forever. There were a few dealers with off grade stuff at more reasonble prices, so I managed to pick up a few hits to my FB lists... and a few dupes because I didn't bother to cross anything off my list as I went from one table to the next. I grabbed a couple extras of the traded checklists (74 and 76) because I can never remember which one is on everyone's lists. A 1978 #206 LL with Ryan was had for a buck, but then I discovered one already in my binder, so apparently it wasn't one I was looking to send out to someone and couldn't find. Other dollar box finds were a 1956 #299, a 1957 mid series #292, and a 1967 hi #547 (which I later found out was a DP ::sigh::). About the only card I know I got a good deal on was the Ozzie Smith RC for $5 - I'm pretty sure I can kill someone's set with that one. The last purchase I want to mention is a few of the unmarked 1973 blue team checklists - I also won a couple eBay lots of these and finished off my set with the '**' and '*' variations. I have about three dozen extras, including a near complete set, missing only the Angels, Braves and Reds I think. There's also a bunch of the asterisk variations, so if you're insane like me and have a short list, shoot it over to me and I'll see if I can help. Most of them are marked, since I upgraded a lot in my binder. Also, if you need any of the other cards I mentioned, PLMK. OBC Family, The last couple of weeks I have been on the road more than I have been home. Mostly for work, but one trip was self-inflicted. Grab a snack and listento the tale if you please... I drove up to Washington to catch up with my PNWOBCer troupe, stopping first in Olympia to visit Dave Fallen. He guided me into a restaurant at which I needed to refuel after the first 5 hours of driving. Dave picked up the tab and handed me a pair of 51 Bowmans!! Whadda guy !! I drove on to meet Mikey D on his secluded Whidbey Island where ferry traffic and sailing times mean that you can almost SEE his house, but it takes hours to get there...it was worth the wait though as Mikeeeee treated me to some room and board ( and some 50 Bowmans!!!) Next day we drove to Seattle where we would eventually met up with Big Al Cummings, The Patron Saint of Foiled Plans, Unexpected Turns and Witty Insults. He was late. Al directed me to Mark Macrae's table at the Seattle Center Card show and the stack of 62 Green Tints. Although I didn't have my list, I knew which ones didn't look familiar. I pulled a healthy stack ...and then HE BOUGHT THEM FOR ME! Whadda guy!! Bumped into Dave Fallen again...who was dejectedly looking for Seattle Popcorn cards. His spirits picked up some when he found some Angels Popcorn cards (a weak substitute I suppose). Dave checked his watch and left just in time to miss Al's arrival...whew, that was close!! Then the fun began!!! We had tickets to the Mariners game that evening and several hours to kill. Imagine 3 OBCers prowling the mean streets of C-Attle without their wives, what perils would our heroes encounter??...Then remember that it was Mike and Al and myself... false alarm, Seattle! We were hungry as usual. Al drove us to the other side of town where Safecois. We wanted food but then decided we should take the bus back to the other side of town where we left the tickets (DOH!!). Hey, I told you we had time to kill but no clue how to kill it !! Another tour of Seattle produced the tickets and my car again so that we wouldn't get lost after the game...whatever that means...we parked across thestreet in the same lot as Big Al's touring vessel. Great plan, but where'sAl?? We ate a few times while looking for him. Found him resting up at a picnic table so that the insults could continue....Grant was heavily abused for his Game was about to start, we got some cool cards for going through the gates. We had to trade with other fans to complete the set. The OBCers3 were naturals at that concept and we had three complete sets within 20 minutes, 10 of which were reserved for another BBQ sandwich. Mariners jump out early. We broke Sexton and Beltre out of their slumps andIchiro belted the ball all over the park. M's win 12-1 over KC. They needed us ! Took me about 11 hours to get home again, as I missed the ferry departure by just a few minutes. Drank a pot of coffee and drove home after a quick pizza stop in Port Townsend... I'll be back on the road for 3 days starting in the morning. I doubt that the fun of this last trip will be duplicated. There is nothing like OBC-Live events. Love it ! Thanks for reading !!! That one looks like a well trimmed 1951 Wheaties card. My SCD describes
the set as "coming from single serve boxes and includes three baseball
players (Williams, Musial, Feller), and one football player (Lujack), a
basketball player (Mikan) and a golfer (Snead). Well trimmed cards measure
2-1/2" x 3-1/4" and feature blue line drawings of the player with a wide white
border, a facsimile auto and descriptive title below. A small horde of complete
unused boxes made their way into the hobby in the early 1990's." I'd include
pricing info, but the book is out of date and I don't think anyone really cares
anyway ;-) My guess is it's worth less than a T206 Wagner, but more than a
1978 Mendoza. Hope this helps,

My most memorable visit to Tiger Stadium. It was in the early 90's on a
Memorial Day weekend. We were visiting friends in the Detroit area and
decided to take in a game. Very sparse crowd for a game against the
White Sox. Top of the 2nd inning the kids wanted a hot dog and drink, so
friend Bonnie and I went up to the concession window. Seemed like it was
the only one open on that whole side of the park. Stood in a long line
through four whole innings before being served. When I got home I wrote
to Tom Monahan and asked why the guy who could guarantee delivery of a
pizza to my door within 30 minutes couldn't deliver a hot dog to my hands
in the ball park within 4 innings. Got a nice reply from one of his aides

Tom et al,
Yes, we are indeed lamenting the coming of the wrecking ball to Michigan
and Trumbull. It seems that all is not totally lost. Although there will
be condos and commercial buildings going up where the stadium structure
was, the actual field will remain. It will be used for various sporting
events including Little League and High School games. I also heard that
it will once again be called Navin Field. When I retire for real, it
would be too cool to have a Condo overlooking the outfield where Tiger
greats used to roam! Now that would be a fitting location for the House
of Maxwell, huh?

Today I went to a card show and paid $25 for George Kell's autograph. When
I finally made it to my turn in line I asked if George could add a notation
with his HOF induction year. That of course raised all kinds of commotion
from the people running the commercial end of things. "notations are an extra
$10!" I was told in no uncertain terms. After all the commotion subsided,
George looked up at me and said, "you can add that yourself" and he gave me a

So, my question is... if I add my own notation to George's autograph will
that detract from it? George said I could do it, but it seems to me that it
could be construed as forgery.

Of course in this case it is something that will never be offered for sail,

I was trying to think of a fair way to word the poll and cover all the
bases (no pun) at the same time. I couldn't remember Geno's exact
wording. Is this an OBC Hall of Fame that we are starting at zero
members or is the poll for the MLBs HOF? Another question would be what
if the MLB HOF was started over at zero. So that's why I put in #2 & #4
answers in the poll. Anyway if anyone has a problem we can discuss,
cancel or redo the poll or whatever :-) I don't mind being the
poll-meister but I just need to know what the goal is or excatly what
the person with the question is trying to find out etc. I'll recheck
Geno's message and do another Santo poll with different wording. We can
discuss our options before we do another player.

Actually, what I had meant to say was if you were presented with the Veteran's
Committee list that I sent the link to, which guys would you vote for. I'm
going to be out of town starting Wednesday, so I'll run a short poll for
a couple of days.

Take a look at this link and send me your votes:

You can vote for as many or as few as you like and I'll tally them up. A player
needs 75% to get in, so we'll see if anybody makes it. The poll willend
Tuesday night, or possibly Wednesday morning, depending on when my flight
leaves. Let's stick to the players and not the execs, umps, etc.

This should be fun!

Today I went to a card show and paid $25 for George Kell's autograph. When
I finally made it to my turn in line I asked if George could add a notation
with his HOF induction year. That of course raised all kinds of commotion
from the people running the commercial end of things. "notations are an
extra $10!" I was told in no uncertain terms. After all the commotion subsided,
George looked up at me and said, "you can add that yourself" and hegave
me a little wink.

So, my question is... if I add my own notation to George's autograph willthat
detract from it? George said I could do it, but it seems to me that it
could be construed as forgery.

Of course in this case it is something that will never be offered for sail,
so I guess I shouldn't worry about it, but I am curious and would appreciate
hearing what "the experts" think.

OBC, it's an attitude

OBP: Santo .382 Robby .322

Sorry guys but I had an extra word in the poll by accident after the 1st
edit, so I had to edit it again & it wiped out all 3 votes of:

D. Rice, Geno & Jimbo (again!).

BTW, Ron Santo's career #s are:

HRs-342 (good but Kingman has 442)
RBI-1331 (How many for Kong, Rice & Evans?)
SB-35 of 76 (41 CS!?)
OBP .362
AVG .277
All Star 9 times (fans liked him!)

A fan fav and he's a nice guy too, he lost a leg to diabetes plus he is
an announcer but probaby not quite TOP 200 caliber in my opinion, just
based on the hitting stats I see. However I admit I have no idea about
his defense at 3B or his longevity. Plus I'm not a Cubs fan, unless
they are playing the Yankees, Angels, Mariners or Blue Jays! I bet he
has better #s than some already in the HOF though. So my vote is
PROBABLY in the 1st poll but NO in the 2nd, since I'd basically have to
kick out 14 people then determine Santo was the best to take the 200th
slot. Kingman's avg is weak but I'm going to see how Darrell Evans
(414 HRs?) and Jim Rice compare to Santo, although Rice was an OF.

Anyone have a list of players with the most RBIs that are NOT in the HOF
but eligible?

There is a link to Ron Santo's stats at the very bottom.

Today I received in the mail the last two 1910 T210 Old Mill series 2 cards I needed to finish the 87 cards in this set - Levy and Zimmerman! There are 8 series in the T210 set -- totally 640 different cards. I picked series 2 to work on because it's "the easiest", there are no big names (others series have Casey Stengel and Joe Jackson -- buying a second house would be cheaper), and I actually had a few. Time was on Ebay you could pick series 2's up for $10 a piece. Completion hasn't really sunk in yet, but this might be my most satisfying collecting milestone to date. It took over nine years to gather these cards one by one. This was one of my big three card goals for 2006. Now my goal for the rest of the year is to finish my 1961 Post set. Any help appreciated, I do have a bunch of dupes from recent purchases of ebay lots that I'm going to send out.

There aren't many places left (Fenway & Wrigley ???) where a fan had/has the
opportunity to sit so close to the field and be right on top of the action
as Tiger Stadium allowed. There are also not that many places left whereyou
can see a long-ball power hitter bounce a drive off of, or actually clear
the high roof of a stadium, either. I was in Tiger when Frank Howard cleared
the roof in left center, and I saw Jim Northrup slam a drive up there
to right one time, but that one didn't clear and it bounced back down into
the stands. I was also at the game when Mickey came up to bat and Bill Freehan
and Denny McLain got together at the mound for a laugh, only to see Mantle
drive the next pitch into the seats for a tater. As the Mick was rounding
the bases, McLain was still smiling, and my Dad, probably the only person
in the world I know who is a bigger sore loser than I am, looked at me
and said, "What the h** is so funny about that?" Over a thirty mile drive
and hours later, he was still chewing the bit about it. To be quite honest
with you, I'd bet he is still grumpy that McLain would give the dreaded and
hated "the Mick," an easy one, even if it was scheduled to be his last game
in Detroit before retiring.

I also got to stand in the Tigers dugout prior to a Lions football game once,
while my Dad and his barbershop chorus sang the National Anthem. At thetime,
I was way too young to understand how lucky I was, but I also got toshake
hands with Hal Newhouser, Gates Brown & Earl Wilson on that day. Earl
smiled when my Dad pulled the Gator' and he over to introduce me, but they
were both pretty big guys, VERY dark, and they SCARED me!!! If Earl was
only half as scary on the mound as he was while shaking my hand, I can assure
you I'd never want to have to come to bat and face him. ...and to think
they say Bob Gibson was even more nasty. NO thanks; take me out, coach,
I think I got the flu today!

Many fond memories, but Tiger stadium had a lot of serious faults, as well. There
are almost no major parking lots in the whole neighborhood. There were
way too many seats with severely obstructed views, and the concessionsand
restroom facilities were hideous. Even the locker rooms seemed kind of
grungy when I was able to take a tour through them a few years back. Centerfield
bleacher seating in any park is a long way from the action at homeplate,
but I can sympathize with you Bob, because I also remember several games
where I had to walk around the stadium and almost to third base from those
bleachers, just to get a hot dog. You wont find yourself having to do
that in today's new parks. I guess, back then, you simply needed to harbor
a passionate love for the game.

While I haven't attempted anything like a MLB ballpark tour or anything like
that, I have seen games from the stands of several other places. Of course,
since I grew up with the Tigers in Tiger stadium, I'll admit, I'm biased,
and I too, will probably find a lump in my throat when I see photos of it
coming down. Alas, I also know I'll retain a lot of memories from there, even
if one or two of them are less than favorable. I feel very lucky that
I was able to see some of the game's all-time greatest players play there,
and some who were on some pretty great teams as well.  Been there; done that;
even have the Polaroid and 126 instamatic film photos to prove it!!! Slated
to be ripped down or not, I'm happy to know that I'll retain those memories,
long after the grounds at Michigan and Trumbull have been turned into
something else.

Ahhhhhh yes; Baseball. Thanks for the memories!

Got a nice reply from one of his aides
apologizing with an explanation that they hadn't anticipated the crowd

Hey gang:

Been a while since I have posted-I hope everybody is well. With a
break between the regular and summer Little League seasons, I figured
it would be a good time to tell everybody I am still alive. I did not
coach for the first time in four years but it made no difference, we
spend three to four nights a week at the field either way, which will
continue through early August. I have stayed busy though......

I have complied a spreadsheet of all Topps Baseball issues (like a
master type-list) covering 1949-80 and would like to have any
interested OBC'ers give it the once-over before I post it to the
website. It includes Bazooka, OPC and Venezuelan issues plus
Non-Sports (that include baseball players) and a few other things. In
fact, I made my first new entry to it in many a moon after reading last
week's SCD article on three new 1968 Topps 3D variations (like the
regular 68 3D's but with no player name or team on the front). It's a
small Excel spreadhseet so if you are interested in being a glorified
fact checker or proofreader, let me known and I will e-mail the laterst
version to you.

Has anybody heard where the Ft. Washington show is moving? I would
like to attend the late summer or late fall show and just realized Ft.
Washington is done for already. If I had the time I would hit the
National this year but we are just back from vacation then and will
have to wait for next year's in Cleveland. There is a lack of good
dealer stock these days even at the biggest local shows and I think I'm
better off waiting for the big shows to stock up on oddballs. I like
to support our twice annual "big" Long Island show at Hofstra
University but after the first one a lot of out of state dealers did
not return and May's event was a bit lackluster. Ebay is nice and
there are some bargains every once in a while but there's also a bunch
of people overbidding extravagantly and besides, nothing beats milling
a round a big show!

Did anyone notice Kevin Savage sold a PSA 1 Eddie Stanky 1951 Topps
Major League All Star for over $17,000? Yikes! He's been getting some

Okay fellow traders,
I admit, I have indeed been AWOL for many months, and just because I'm finally
starting to pick it up, I certainly don't deserve preferential treatment.
However, I AM trying to get things back together and I just can't understand
why you all need to go to bed and get sleep. Especially so early. Why,
MyGawd, it's barely 2a in the Rockies.

Never mind that I'm unemployed, behind in rent, behind in utilities, have nothing
to get up for, and, as some of you might know, even behind with family
and past friends in trade. So? Why condemn me?

I'm just an average, ordinary, every day nice guy, so the idea that any of you
could think you need to go to bed and not respond to group Email in themiddle
of the night is unacceptable. Ridiculous. Totally Unacceptable.

For me? Wishful? Probably !!!!!!

Oh, alright, I know, I'm totally outrageous, completely dangerous, but thatis
much of the reason so many of you wrote to me in the first place.

Here's the deal.

I'm going to work on a total inclusive, all groups invited, all friends needed,
all traders required, middle of the country and equal distant gather point,
trading group gathering. While I intend to invite and provide anyoneand
everyone with the ability to stay here with me, I'm also hopeful that the
half dozen others who are here in Colorado, will share the same. I would
like to establish and help YOU promote our own Card Trading National.

Truly, I think this is our time to establish a voice in who the REAL card collectors
/ traders are, and show the manufacturers, the retailers, and theMLB,
who truly buys their cards. I think it is time, and the right time, for
OBC, OCT, TB, and VCT and others, to all stand together, make a stand, and
tell the industry what we really want. Honestly, I'm not sure any of us
understands how powerful each of our groups are, and I truly believe mostof
us, in all of our groups, are willing to stand up for what we want.

LET'S UNITE!!!

LET'S ESTABLISH WHO IT IS WHO REALLY WANTS and WHO REALLY BUYS CARDS. LET'S
INFORM THE INDUSTRY WHO THEIR CUSTOMERS REALLY ARE !!!

Why stop now?
Well, because I know I am unable to control the card industry. However, I
also know that with all of us on the same page, we can indeed, control our
destiny. Between OCT, OBC, VCT, TB, and our friendly folks from CSCT, I truly
believe we could make an impact on how to control the sports card industry.

Truly, gentlemen, it's not that difficult. All we need to do is speak up,all
on the same page. I truly, this is a time of turmoil for MLB and the
Players Association. They to know they NEED their product to sell. WE HOWEVER,
can be the voice that tells them WHAT they should be selling.

Please, get back to me. Let's pursue this. Let's tell this industry what we
really want.

I want to shove our opinions down the throats of some big time Topps, MLB, and
UD execs. I think I can do that; wont you please help?

You have a good idea, but there is one small problem
with your concept. For the members of all these
trading communities, there is a certain percentage who
don't buy new material. I'm one of them.

When I buy cards, whether in a hobby shop, online or
through eBay, my money goes to the seller. Neither
Topps, nor Upper Deck nor MLB see a dime of that
money. As a result of that, none of those three
entities will give a damn about how I felt regarding
their product. I'm not one of their customers.

Besides, even if buyers of vintage material mattered
to them, few of us would matter as long as there are
hobbyists who continue to throw obscene amounts of
money at eBay auctions and the auction houses (I'm not
harping on those who have the money -- after all, it's
theirs to spend as they want). If you've seen any of
the recent auctions through Mastro, Mile High,
Sotheby's, REA or Memory Lane, you'll see that we are
small potatoes in the "big picture" of the Hobby.

So if I show up at the gathering to say my peace about
the current state of the hobby, they aren't going to
be impressed. If I do the same thing through my
newsletter...they still won't care.

That said, there is a valid point you're trying to
make. Between reading through some of the same stuff
I hear whenever some of my co-workers decide that we
need a union at work and the ramblings of somebody who
probably should have slept on his thoughts (I find
that I can write a lot at 2AM...but the next day I
realize I have to edit it down. A lot), I'm sensing
that you are saying that if the card companies would
make a product that we'd like, we might feel compelled
to actually buy the new stuff like we used to.

For better or for worse, cards as we knew them 20, 30
or even 40 years ago are lost to history. Things like
inflation, technology and
tamper-proof/anti-counterfeit measures have killed the
chances of having even a 99-cent pack of cards. Add
to that the fact that baseball has waned in popularity
(in comparison to football and basketball) with young
fans and the result is lower demand for cards. The
overproduction of cards for much of the 80s and early
90s has so saturated the market that cases of 1986
Topps are worth less now than they were the day they
were issued...good for bargain hunters but not for the
collectors who sank a few hundred dollars into them
hoping they'd get a return on their investment (and 20
years later they're still waiting). But then again,
who here needs more 1986 Topps? I sure don't.

Walker, I think a lot of good can come out of having
some type of "advisory board" in the hobby to give
some guidance to the card manufacturers; however, if
one gets assembled I'm willing to guess that the seats
will go to the guys who are spending more money in a
single auction that I spend on the hobby over 5 years.

Take care,

I doubt the promoters would let anyone get away with this. With show security
and all, you'd probably need a special badge just to hang around a back
entranceway - if you even knew where the signers were being brought in.
Personally, I don't have the "intestinal fortitude" to try it... with my luck,
I'd get
caught and thrown in jail for 'stealing' someone's autograph.

Hi Gary-It is nice to see my information on the 53 Bowman lot did not

afraid to do that because i thought if i did a bolt of lightening would
come out of the sky and strike me down.I am guilty of doing it but only
when i did it unintentionally because i bid in such haste as i didn't

The most fun i have in OBC is when i get an opportunity to send out
one of my favorite cards to other members.
I get to do this when i post some availables or find some hits to a
members want list. When you receive cards from me be sure to take
special note of one particluar card mixed in with the eclectic mix
of oddballs i usually include with the "legitimate" cards which are
the vintage hits to members want lists.
That card is of course the sepia colored Conlon card. Those are my
favorite baseball cards. They were issued by a company called World
Wide Sports with copyright by the Sporting News in the mid
1980's.They predate the black and white Conlon collection cards
which first made their appearance in 1991.
I love the sepia color to these cards which gives them the
atmosphere of the time as opposed to the harsh black and white
Conlons of the 90's.The black and white Conlons of the 1990's are a
lot better known because they had a huge distribution and were sold
in card stores.
The 1 of 2 places i found the sepia colored Conlons were in blister
packs at Toys R'Us stores in the mid 80's.They were not sold in any
baseball card store i know of and were largely overlooked by the
hobby.I went to different Toys R Us at the time and bought as many
packs as i could for $2.99.
The other place i found the sepia Conlons was at a drugstore at the
Torrance mall. They were packaged in a cardboard box like container
with 3 sets and a book inside. The 3 sets included were series 3,4,5.
Some other card collectors have asked me which player is on my
favorite sepia colored Conlon card.I really like the Ruth, Gehrig,
Cobb cards in the sets but my favorite card is in series 4 -the card
of Jim Thorpe. There aren't too many cards of Thorpe in a baseball
uniform and that is my favorite baseball card of all.
The Conlon sepia cards still show up occasionally on ebay and i just
won a series 3 set.-ebay # 8825723566-Linda

Sure Peter, I have a few:

1) Place the cards in a plastic bag with some baking powder. The baking
powder works well for taking odors out of refrigerators, so why not baseball
You can even shake the bag and get the powder all over the cards, which will
help you with your next game of leaners, but I wouldn't recommend mailing the
cards afterwards (especially to any goverment facilities) with an "unknown
powdery substance" on them. No word on whether actually baking the cards with
baking powder on them does any better, although the plastic bag doesn't fare
too well in the oven.
2) Place the cards in a box with some of those scented candles. I don't know
if this is as effective as the baking powder and special care must be used if
you decide to light the candle. If the cards catch on fire, then they'll smell
smoky again and you'll be right back at square one.
3) Affix the cards to your clothing and locate a skunk to antagonize. If you
can manage to corner it somehow and make threatening moves, you'll no longer
have that smoky smell to worry about... you won't have to worry about having
friends and family over the house for a while either.
4) Cleverly place a card or two on your wrist and visit the mall. Find a s
tore that sells perfume and lets you get free samples. This process takes abit
longer, especially if you want to cover both sides and have a lot of cards in
the lot. Personally, I have insecurities about spraying a lot of perfume on
myself, so I can't speak from experience on this one.
5) Punch a hole in the top of the card and string it through one of those
pine tree car air fresheners and hang it from your rear view mirror. It probably
won't make a dent in the smell and might make your car smell like smoke too,
but it'll look really cool and make a great conversation starter if you like
pick up hitch hikers on the interstate like I do.
6) Take up cigarette smoking. Although there's many health disadvantages, if
you can work your way up to a pack or two per day, the whole house and
everything you own will smell like cigarette smoke, so you won't notice it on
cards... although I think loss of your sense of smell is probably associated
with smoking too, so you've got that working in your favor as well.
7) Grab a bar of Irish Spring soap and a cheese grater. Cover the cards with
a fine powder of soap and dunk the whole lot in the sink. Carefully scrub away
the dirt and smoke paying attention not to wash off too much of the pictures
and stats. You can then dry them in a large book or use the car air freshener
technique discussed earlier if you don't mind too much warping.
That's all I can think of at the spur of the moment, but I hope you find some
of them useful. Happy collecting. TAYL,

Ken M

Subject: collection reduction and Topps giveaway

My collecting goal is not to have the largest, most valuable or best
condition collection. I just want to complete sets that look good in my albums so I
can look at them and enjoy while sitting on the couch watching a game. I want
to collect sets that I think I can one day finish without busting the bank,
and I want to collect sets where I can make impulse buys on Ebay for less than
$5. That said, some of my Topps sets don't fit this criteria -- I have to
admit that I don't feel much energy around finishing my 1958, 1961 or 1964
sets...so I'm going to redistribute them to OBCers. I'm going to start with 1964.
This is not a trade, this is just a plain old distribution. If you want to
hit back, that's always welcome, but not necessary. Last note, if you have any
minimum condition standards; about 99% of these cards won't meet them.

I'd like to impact some close sets so if you're within about 25 cards of
finishing 1964, please send me your wantlist and I'll see what I can hit. Once I
move out the 64s, I'm going to start on 61 and then 58.

So send me those short 64 wantlists (and please include your address to
speed packing)!

Well, the meeting went off as planned=85..and to describe Jim Kelley=92s
memory as =93fairly sharp for an 87 year old=94 is an understatement. It=92s
better than mine, and he=92s got 30 years on me. Turns out he also covered
the Philadephia A=92s, as well as the Phil. Stars. I hope to get another
chance to do some brain-picking about the A=92s=85..

A few sent me questions to ask:

Keith- he did remember Lonnie Summers, described him as a =93utility=94 kind
of guy. Couldn=92t remember anybody else named Summers.

Linda and Tim- I asked for the comparison for Satchell Paige to J.R.
Richard. He said it was hard to compare then and now for various
reasons. He said J.R.=92s potential was never realized (due to his stroke
of course), and brought in names like Ryan and Clemens. He likened Paige
to Koufax in his prime, just before his arm problems. He said Paige
could pick a button off your shirt with a pitch or untie your shoelace
if he felt like it. He also said that the Negro League teams traveled a
lot, and usually played 7 inning doubleheaders. Paige generally worked 3
innings and came out, regardless of the score, and Kelley said the score
was almost always in Paige=92s favor. He said Paige pitched every single
day, and the modern pitchers go about every 4th or 5th day. Most stats
weren=92t kept back then, except for some weekend games. He talked about
Ryan=92s walk ratio, and thinks that Clemens has been on the juice. He
said the only juice the Negro Leaguers were on was the flask that kept
getting passed around the field during the games. Everybody wanted to
see Paige, and a lot of places had money-back guarantees=85.=94if Paige

Peter- I never got the chance to ask about his All Star picks=85I was so

Stearns wouldn=92t be likely to ever get off the bench. The ones he
mentioned that he thought might have had a chance were Paige, Cool Papa
Bell, and Josh Gibson. He went on to say that most of the players in the
Negro Leagues were, in his opinion, self-taught, without the teaching
and coaching available to whites, or the opportunities, so the odds were
against them from the git go.

I=92ll send out another blurb tomorrow if I get a chance=85.Mr. Kelley had

Oh crap! Andy's 1958T's were the only year I could hit on a semi-

could work on that 1958 set for him before it's too late!

From: "Grant"
Subject: A little more Negro Leagues Stuff....

I asked Mr. Kelley if he shared the belief that integration killed the
Negro Leagues. I wasn=92t taking notes, so I=92ll paraphrase his answers. He
said Oh Yeah. As the black players entered the majors, the black fans
started watching and following them. The fan base for the Negro Leagues
fell right off. It=92s interesting that the most resistance to integration
came from the black owners of the Negro League teams. Up =91til then, the
money they were making was going into the player=92s and the black owner=92s
pockets, but that all changed. A lot of the money that was used to back
the Negro Leagues was coming from Jews. Big league baseball back then
really resisted letting Jews into their business. Abe Sapperstein
(Harlem Globetrotters) was financially involved with the Indianapolis
Clowns for example. No coincidence that they were pretty entertaining I
guess=85they had a catcher who sat in a rocking chair behind the plate,
and could still make the throw to second. The shortstop often took a
newspaper out on the field to read and still managed to play.

Did you travel with the team? No, for two reasons=85.the paper I worked
for was cheap, and after the games the players would go places I
couldn=92t. You have to understand that discrimination worked both
ways=85after the games, most of the players ended up in a Blues bar, and I
would have stood out like a sore thumb. To save money, they=92d sleep on
the bus on their way to their next game.

Any team stand out as the best you saw back then? Homestead Grays in the
early =9140s. Buck Leonard, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell all playing on the
same team. I kind of lost touch around then because I had gone off to
Europe during the war. I almost couldn=92t get into the Army=85In
Pennsylvania you had to be at least 116 pounds, and I was around 112, so
I went to another State that had 110 as their minimum and joined up. (He
was pretty proud to have ended up a 1st Sgt.)

(I was wearing my OBC shirt and hat of course, and the topic of cards
came up- he said he used to have a ton of them, but when he got back
from WWII his mom had taken care of that=85.heavy sigh!)

Did you see the House of David? Yes, but only after they had shaved off
their beards and started fighting amongst themselves. They were playing
baseball to raise money for their colony, and trying to convert folks
along the way.

There were several teams named the Giants=85 Yes, Elite Giants, American
Giants. Campanella played about 5 years with the Baltimore Elite Giants.
The Philadelphia A=92s could have had him real easy, but Connie Mack
wasn=92t having any of it, so he went to the Dodgers instead. I remember
once trying to get a photo of Mack and Satchell Paige together. Mack
would usually only let photos of himself and black players get taken
under the stands, and not on the field. I went to Satch and asked if he
would go under the stands for a picture, and he said =93What do I want to
get my picture taken with that old SOB for?=94 I never did get that

Ever thought of writing a book? Nah, it=92s pretty much all been said. If
you=92re only ever gonna read one book about the Negro Leagues, read =93Only
The Ball Was White.=94 I think the guy who wrote it just died recently.

Needless to say, I hope to hook up with Mr. Kelley again. It didn=92t take
a whole lot of work to get the stories out of him=85.just get him started
on a topic and let him go.

Thanks a lot Grant for sharing the details of your conversation with
Mr. Kelly.I especially learned a lot about Satchell Paige from the
conversation.I have the autobiography "Maybe I'll Pitch Forever" in
paperback but i really didn't learn very much about Satch as a person
because he seems to be very careful in what he says in that book.
It was very interesting to find out from Mr. Kelley what Satch said
about the circumstances about that picture with Connie Mack:

Nice to find out Satch was not some sort of "scared rabbit"-afraid to
talk- and was not afraid to express his distaste for Mack.

But my husband Tim found that out too when he talked to Satch briefly
outside the Shrine auditorium in LA just after a Harlem Globetrotters
game where Satch was an added attraction.Tim asked Satch how he would
have pitched to Ty Cobb and Satch replied ,"one things for sure, if he
spiked a player on my team he would have had a few broken ribs next
time he came up to bat."

313 249 153 11 8

Most of the cards are in pretty good condition. The 68's are real
nice. A few high numbers in there as well. I will try and get more
availables posted in the very near future. Until then, Claim away.

Did some pre-war organizing and came up with a real 1934 Goudey wantlist, along

Need these:
001 002 003 005 006 008 009 010 012 014 016 017 018 019 020 022 023 027 030 031

095 096

Have these extras:
43 Porter (Indians) 47 Frederick (Dodgers) 48 Carleton (Cardinals)

If you have other 34Gs to trade for the the above, great! If not, let me know

Card #47 notes that John Frederick set a then-record of 6 pinch-hit homers in
one season. The record stood for quite some time--it was finally surpassed with
7 in 2000 by Dave Hensen (also in 2001 by Craig Wilson). Any vintage (pre-1980)
pinch-hit HRs that OBCers out there saw and can still remember? I'm young
enough that the Mariners from 1979 and 1980 are my only vintage fan years--and
not many to report from those teams!

I picked up an interesting oddball at Sportsfest, with the hopes that
I could put it in the mail to someone in the group. It is a sugar
packet produced by a company called Redpath. On one side, it has a
picture of Chris Spiers on the Expos. ON the top of that side is his
name, position, height and weight printed in french. On the bottom,
the same info in English. On the ther side is the Expos logo. ON
top, more info on Spier in French, with the same info on the bottom in
English. Does anyone know what this is and what "set" it might be a

Have you ever noticed how some items you bid on with ebay you seem to
win the item for your max bid when you thought you should have won it
cheaper. That is because ebay sellers have other id's and bid up items
to have the last bid just under your max bid thus making you pay the
most for the item.
An example is a Ryan Rookie card may be on ebay.Current bid might be
$40 with 4 or 5 previous bidders if you check the bidding history. You
want the card but you don't think you can win it for only $42 so
instead of placing the next higher increment bid which may be $42 you
bid $110 which is about what you think the card will go for and the
maximium you would want to pay.
When the auction ends you are the winner at $110- your max bid. Then
you look at the bidding history and see something like this:

What happened was you should have won the card for $42 by outbidding
the next highest LEGITIMATE bidder at $40 but what happened was there
was a bid placed in the last 10 seconds of $107.50 by the seller
under a different id forcing you to pay your max bid of $110.

How to avoid sellers on ebay making phony bids to raise the bids to
the max-
Check the selling history of the items of the seller and if you see
bids raised to just under the max bid a few seconds before the
auction ends don't make a bid way above the present bid on the item-

Yes, the seller can view the amount and max amount of all bids during the
course of the auction so if he sees your max bid of $110 and the current high bid
is yours at $42 he can raise the bid to the increment just under $110 or
$107.50 10 seconds before the auction ends and force you to pay $110 and not $42
which is one bid above the next high LEGITIMATE bid of $40.-Linda

setting a reserve price by putting in a bid, without having to pay the
$2 extra for a reserve listing. He=92s making sure that the card sells for

Linda, this practice is known as shill bidding and is not allowed on eBay. If you can substantiate your claim then you should report it to eBay and get the crook out. Just my thoughts - BE WELL!!!

Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Yes, the seller can view all bids... I disagree

Linda-
Sorry to disagree, but....  unless something has changed in the last few months (since the last time I sold on eBay) the seller cannot see a bidder's maximum proxy bid. The amount seen is that amount required to bump the bid up one more notch. For instance, say the minimum bid increment is $1, and the item is currently at $20. If I bid $50 everyone, including the seller, sees my maximum bid as $21 (even though I have a ceiling bid of $50 in place). If the next bidder then bids $25, my visible maximum bid would jump to $26 (but still with an invisible $50 maximum in place). What happens a lot at the end of auctions is sniper action. Many bidders (like myself) wait until the last few seconds to place their maximum bid, often via an automated bidding service. This avoids bidding wars early on in the action, and explains why final bids seem to jump dramatically in the last few seconds. Yes, it may sometimes be a shill bid by the seller, but more often it's just a handful of snipers waiting in the weeds to place their bids at the last possible moment. I've still LOST many lots where my last second bid-snipe doubled the previous high bid. That's just the nature of the beast. Bottom line, know your seller, bid only what you are willing to pay, and bid as late as possible in the action.  DR

However, that doesn't stop sellers from placing phony bids to raise prices. I suppose the seller could have placed a bid of $1000, saw that it raised the winning bid to $112.50, canceled his $1000 bid and then from a different account, bid $107.50, or he might have just got got lucky. Do you have the item # we could look at it to do some analysis?> Sorry , but i don't have the item # anymore- it happened on an auction about 6 months ago but i sure remember it.Also i remember there were no bid retractions on the auction. The Ryan for $110 was just a hypothetical situation i made up as an example. It actually happened on a lof of non sport cards i was bidding on. There is one particular non sport set or cards that a lot of strange bidding seems to re occur on- It is the 1967 Star Trek Leaf cards.Whenever a lot of these appears on ebay strange things happen during the bidding like an unusually large number of bids on the cards or the bids on the lot going up hundreds of dollars in the last seconds.Every time a lot of these cards shows up on ebay and i find out about it i always bid on them because they are my most wanted non sport cards. Check out ebay # 6286313308 because that was my happiest day on ebay- I actually won a lot of 10!!!!! of these cards after bidding unsuccessfully on just about every lot of them that shows up .I won the lot for only $45.70 or less than $5 a card. That is a big deal to me because these cards are $25 and up at the local card shop stores when they are infrequently in dealers cases. I would love to be able to go to the Philly non sport show back east and look for these cards but unfortunately i can't afford the trip. And unfortunately the local card shop bid board is no help in obtaining these cards- While i have won some great baseball cards on the bid board for very cheap prices it is not the case for these Star Trek cards i am looking for.If one shows up on the bid board the bidding starts at $20 and goes up from there.Baseball cards go for cheap on the bid board but non sports cards go for way over book and a lot of the local collectors will pay $20 for a particular non sport card they want and 50 cents max for like a Carlton 65 rookie card.I just won one on the bid board on Saturday for 75 cents to replace the one i had which was cut in half that i sent to an OBC member. The one i won is at least a full card- Linda ================= To: jazzgirl1920s@aol.com Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2006 16:27:49 -0400 From: Bob Saxton Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Yes, the seller can view all bids I sell regularly on ebay, everything from books to farm equipment, and if there is a way for the seller to know any bidders maximum bid I've never found it. Ebay has its problemsand does occasionally tolerate shill bidding, but the situation described below is simply due to market forces. As for unrealistic postage... there's not much you can do. I only bid on items where the postage is listed, and I incorporate that amount into the determination of my highest bid. If I am willing to spend $20 for an item, I don't care if it's $18 for the item and $2 for postage, or vice versa, as long as the total is $20 or less, I'm okay. I also find myself strongly preferring lots I can pay for by PayPal... I've got my money back a couple times when things didn't go well. That never would have happened had I payed by check or money order. Don

And, of course, always bid only what you're willing to pay... :)

The only time I can remember being (probably) shilled was for a group of
off-grade 33 Goudeys. The same seller ran a half-dozen lots over the period of
a couple of weeks. I won the first five at reasonable amounts, but someone came
in and chipped away at the last one, putting in almost a dozen bids before
finally going above me. They later made contact with me asking if I was
interested in the cards for the final bid cost (the bidder, not the seller).
Maybe it was a careless bidder, but it seemed an odd coincidence this would
happen after winning similar lots earlier with no competition.

Anyone seen good suggestions for improving postage fee and shill bidding
problems? If eBay ever cares enough to deal with the problems, they'll need
smart people like us to help. :)

In the past few weeks I've traded emails with people who were trying to get the OBC Home Address list.  It seems a lot of people are unfamilure with the online capabilities of the home address list and the "who collects what" page.  In a nutshell;

1. The most current OBC home address list is online (password protected) and self maintained. This means that an accurate address list is always a few clicks away; everyone can update their direcory listing at any time.

2. As part of maintaining your online directory information, make sure you check the specific sets you collect. This maintains the "Who collects what page". I find this very useful. If I click on a set, it will list all the OBC members who collect that set with links to their wantlists. Cool!

Wayne Delia has written a great tutorial on this featuer which can be accessed at http://www.oldbaseball.com/OBCWCW/OBCMemberProfiles.htm

I believe somebody has suggested how it can be done. To recap:

Seller places a bid using another ID of some amount 10x or so higher than
the value of the product.
They can then see the amount of the previous high bid.
Then they retract their bid and place another bid just under the previous
high bid using their second ID or even do it with a 3rd ID.

Of course this would only apply against somebody who placed a high bid long
before the end of the auction.

True, though eBay reports whether a given listing has canceled bids or not.
That's the easiest way to detect seller fraud.

An apparently common way, mentioned by a visiting friend a few weeks ago, is a
"gentlemen's agreement" within an offline friend network. If you know your
friends are selling things, you check up on their stuff once a week or so and
bump the bids by a moderate amount. It's an odd area--very hard to prove as
fraud, but the idea certainly raises my hackles as a bidder. No doubt some
people consider it a "favor," but please don't do it if I'm selling anything.

They can then see the amount of the previous high bid.
Then they retract their bid and place another bid just under the previous
high bid using their second ID or even do it with a 3rd ID.

Of course this would only apply against somebody who placed a high bid long
before the end of the auction.

Hi Linda,

I have been in that situation and to me the only answer is to snipe the
auction at the last second with the highest price you feel comfortable paying. If
it isnt enough then you at least will feel better that you didn't chase it
past a reasonable point and pay more than you are comfortable with. I have
certainly done that.

Hello All,

Just a little ramble about Tuesday evenings Detroit Tiger ball game. I had the pleasure of attending the game with OBC renowned Mike Rich and a friend of his. We went to root on our 1st place Tiger and watch what might be the final Detroit appearance of Roger 'the Rocket" Clemens. We were not disappointed. Clemens faced the required 12 batters in the first 4 innings with the only base runner being eliminated through the double play. It was not surprising as "The Rocket" has owned the Tigers throughout his career winning about 3 of every 4 games he has pitched against them. It was surprising that Clemens had only thrown 40 pitches or so through 5 innings and Tiger hitters seemed puzzled by the crafty veteran although he had struck out no one through 5.
Fortunately the Tigers Nate Robertson was keeping stride with the future Hall of Famer and the game remained scoreless into the 7th inning until Ordonez and Guillen reached base on walks. The Rocket was not amused, and was openly distraught with home plate umpire C.B. Bucknor and Huston Manager Phil Gardner pulled Clemens for reliever Dan Wheeler which didn't please Clemens at all. Upon his departure nearly 40,000 Tiger faithful rose to their feet and gave the man a rousing round of applause. As I stood and showed my appreciation for the man, his game and a career of excellence I couldn't help but feel proud to be a Detroit fan in the midst of such a showing of respect. Certainly a far cry from the Piston/Pacer Beer Brawls of a few years ago and an absolute demonstration of what being a sports fan in this city is all about, a proud moment indeed.
Clemens departure was all the home team needed to make a move on the Astros as Craig Monroe rattled a double off the left field wall scoring Ordonez and Guillen scored on a throwing error by shortstop Adam Everett. Monroe would score when 3rd baseman Morgan Ensberg booted a routine play off the bat of Brandon Inge and the Tigers were well on their way to a 4-0 victory. It was great to be in the stands on a Tuesday night with nearly 40,000 fellow fans enjoying another Tiger victory in the middle of June. Spending the time and the experience with fellow OBC/F.O.O.T. member Mike Rich made it that much more enjoyable. Thanks for the tic's Mike and the company.

BE WELL OBC and get to a ball game!!!!

Call me scum, but this is MY best, and only trusted way I know to win an auction
without playing the "over bidding war." Simply figure out what you're
really willing to spend, then, if you can be there at the end, place thatbid
in the last ten or twenty seconds. If you lose, oh well, it really wasn't
meant to be and likely the price will end up more than what was fair and
probably had some of those "buddy help buddy" scenario's involved anyway.
It likely will end up exceeding what you truly thought was fair or willing
to spend in the first place. If you win, it will likely be at a price that
is fair and reasonable, and while perhaps a bit on the shady side, since
your bid came in so late, it is indeed legal, often expected, and in the end,
the only way you won is if your bid was the highest placed at the timeof
the auction close. Perfectly legal.

...just watch out for those sneakin', stinkin', over priced shipping charges.
Five dollars to mail a single card exceeds what is fair and reasonable,
even if the seller was schmart enough to label those costs, shipping and "handling."
...talk about dealer (Seller?) scum... ... ... sheesh!

Oh RATS, I know this is late notice, but many of us who are located in the Awesome,
centrally located, vacation state of Colorado, are planning a Meet-'n'-Greet
get together, centered around the Arizona and Colorado Rockies baseball
game, next Sunday, July 9th, at Coors Field, here in Denver, Colorado.

Some of us are going to meet before the game, most of us during, and a few of
us could even possibly meet after, but what is most important, is that we
are going to get together to flip some cards, (Or just brag about what weare
NOT going to give away.) watch two teams play some baseball in a greatball
park, and share friendship, common interests, and the chance to meet up
with fellow traders. ALL are welcome, including friends, family, amazing
spouses, amazing girlfriends, children, parents, grandparents, Aunts, Uncles,
cousins, and, well, you get the picture. And, to help facilitate thisevent,
those of us who are digging into the dirt and trying to make it allhappen,
are also trying to make this happen so that we can all enjoy the camaraderie
and the game, for as reasonable as possible. I personally have extra

for your RV or other drive up rig.

My Colorado friends and I will also be able to refer you to good deals on ahotel

game ticket seating, for less than the cost of a six pack of your favorite

All this is spelled "friendship" and COLORADO Hospitality.

Come one, come all, but just remember, if you feel this is too short of a notice
to make it for this meeting, you are NOT off the hook for our next venture.

See you at the game !!!!! !!! !!!!!

This I can say happens out there - "friend's networking". In my own ebay bidding practices I can say to an extent I have done this. If I know that someone (say an OBC'er) is offering some items on eBay I will bid on every item that interests me, usually what I am willing to spend (which usually is not much). Sometimes I win, usually I do not but my friend can be assured that the winning bid will be at least as much as I was willing to spend. I don't even want to get into the ridiculous bidding wars we all get into with each other when an OBC auction is under way, that's another story entirely.
I know I practice "friend's network" bidding as I have described it, I'm sure many of you do this as well. That will have a slight impact on pricing Linda, but not to the extent that you describe. My two cents worth - BE WELL!!!!

I see that you gave up on this lot. I happened across it early on and placed a small bid (which you quickly outbid) and then sat back and watched it. I know I have heard you speak of this set and it obscurity, until this auction I had never seen it. Do you have any explanation (other than rarity) for the high price realized for a set that barely qualifies for vintage under OBC standards? Your willingness to plop down $221 certainly indicates its valuable to you but other than you and I there were only 2 other bidders for this lot, I can't explain why the price realized was so high. My SCD list the set with BV of $275, but I rarely see actual prices realized aproaching the values attached in these guides. Is this a rare exception or is it something else? Maybe others in the community can shed some light on this. Let's hear from our experts. BE WELL!!!!

i start bidding on it but this same bidder keeps outbidding me no
matter how high i go.Check out the bidder history on these cards. I
have gone up to $220 and got outbid again by the same guy.Who the heck
is this cardsandcatsgreen who keeps outbidding me on these cards i have
wanted so long? The auction has an hour and a half left and i just
wonder what i should do.How high should i bid? How high is this other
bidder going to go?I am afraid that i will never see this large or near
a complete set of these cards ever again on ebay.I have been checking
ebay for years trying to find a whole set of these cards show up and
this is the closest to a copmplete set i have seen.--Linda

Walker-
The bid retraction is a different animal. The example I gave you was of a legitimate bidder (we'll call him "Bob") who placed a high bid early on. Think of Bob's early bid as a bank roll. You have no idea how big his bank roll is, because you only see that portion of it required to cover the current maximum bid. That's why Bob's bid from a few days ago can appear to suddenly jump and match yours. The eBay computer is simply increasing his bid (up to his pre-authorized bank roll amount) to match your bid. This is all legal and part of the bidding strategy.
Ah, but how can someone determine how large Bob's bank roll is? That's where bid retractions come into play. Say Bob's bid initial was $200, but his current leading bid is a mere $15. Bob's bid appears to be $15, but I have no idea how high his ceiling bid is. If I place an outrageous bid for $1000, the new leading bid (mine) will be $201 to Bob's $200 bid. Now that I know what Bob's bank roll  maximum bid is ($200), I retract my $1000 bid, and Bob's leading bid now drops back to $15. This is how unscrupulous shill bidders can determine what someone's maximum bid is and drive up prices artificially. So always be suspicious if you see bid retractions on something you are bidding on.
Bottom line, as always, know your seller, bid only what you're willing to pay (including shipping), and bid late. This last part cannot be overstressed. If I place my bid early, it only gives other legitimate bidders (or shills) time to ratchet up the price, or create a bidding war with plenty of time to blow each other out of the water!
Walker wrote:
Okay, I get this part, but what I guess I didn't understand in the past is how I could see that sixteen dollars, put in my bid for that $200, only to see some "OTHER" guy all of a sudden in there at $210, when what I see on eBay shows me that Mr. $210 placed his bid a day earlier, yet didn't seem even seem to be in the running when his $14 dollar bid was what I thought, originally outbid by the dollar guy.  Is that where this "bid retraction" comes into play?
I truly think this "retraction" thing is what has me confused.
...sheesh, old men these daze, anyway...
Thanks,
