OBCers -- When I put the T202 set on my list, I actually put it on three times - once for each of the different backs (Factory 649, black Factory 30, and red Factory 30), with the goal of eventually completing a "Master Set." The trouble is that I have no idea if all of the cards come with all of the backs, so my wantlist may be a bit fanciful! The black Factory 30s are definitely in much shorter supply than the other two. This got me thinking, so my question to the masses: Do any of you guys have a card on your wantlist that you're not sure exists? For instance that weird Pepper Martin Fleer card that I've never seen. It would be interesting to talk about as we wait for the first pitch of the Year of the Cubs! Maybe somebody can shed some light on your questionable card... I actually have several on my list that probably don't exist. Quite a fewof these are variations. I'm trying to collect the T205 set... but just getting the set isn't enough of a challenge for me - I'm trying to collect all 200+ cards with same back. I still need a ton of them, but most of the cards I've at least SEEN on eBay (usually in a slab or with an exorbitant buy it now price). There'sstill about two dozen I haven't even heard rumors about though. Besides those, there's a 1962 Topps stamp of Roy Sievers depicting him on the KC A's. The Buckett guide has it listed as a common. I find this laughable, since if the price was even remotely close to how scarce it seems to be, then should be worth a fortune. The 1959 Topps Warren Spahn supposedly comes with three distinct variations. The birthdate is either 1921, 1931 with the 3 partially obscured, 1931 without the 3 partially obscured. It's the final version of this card that driving me crazy. One final card I'd like to mention is the lone variation on my 1963 Postlist - a Nellie Fox card showing him without the bat. The Jello card has him batless, so my theory (hope) is that it was somehow mistaken for a Post card and incorrectly listed as a variation. Anyone have any of these? He replied they were in such bad condition no one would buy them.I waited for him to leave and picked the cards up out of the trash. There were about 25 cards;most were very low grade 70's Topps. But then i noticed a 33 Goudey with a torn corner and a Diamond Stars of Dick Bartell that was soiled, had a scratch and some numbers in pencil written on it.I considered these 2 low grade pre- war vintage cards a very good find. Then i got the big suprise. There was a 34 Goudey with heavy creasing. The big suprise was when i turned the card over i noticed it was card # 93.I remembered there were only 96 cards in the set so that card had to be one of those very rare and expensive high numbers. After an ordeal that has lasted nearly three years, I am (finally) a single and free man - my final divorce papers came in the mail last week. Basically, my entire life has been put "on hold" since April of 2003 while a spiteful ex, crummy lawyers and a painfully slow legal system took their courses. It's a shame in that we had no children, shared business interests or anything similar that would make ours a prolonged episode. Greed and nothing else extended my situation way beyond reason. The house where I reside (and will continue to reside - same as on the OBC directory) is in need of some repairs and general maintenance. I have been reluctant to make any improvements to it as the house was the main point of contention in my divorce - no sense in putting in a dollar if I was only going to get 50 cents back, IMO. My finances are somewhat in order, but now I can do with them what I wish without having to "be careful." Heck...now I can buy a lottery ticket and not fear winning! One of the things in life I felt I had to sacrifice is cards. I took my wantlist down long ago for fear of certain folks peeking in, recording my holdings and demanding half. This fear was actually legitimized by an ugly (and petty) situation early on, so I felt it best to lay low and do without one my joys in life. This is a story for another time, though. Slowly, I will begin to put my life back together. I just refinanced my mortgage, which I suppose is a first step. A good house cleaning, some repairs, painting and a lawn are on the list, as is getting back into the OBC swing of things: sending cards and keeping an online wantlist. I even have a starter set that I received at the National a couple of years back for which I have never posted a wantlist. All of my pre-war collection has been in storage for over two years - another shame. Anyhow, the silence from Salem has been broken..and with good reason. I will be planning a "bachelor party" at some point this summer to celebrate my freedom. I'd like to thank everyone for their support and for keeing my spot warm. It's not like me to be reclusive, so being able to do things without fear of reprocusion (justified or not) is a VERY big relief. And for the first time in a while I get to wish everyone... Valacak" Subject: 1970 COMPLETE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have finally been able to retire a wantlist. On Thursday, I received my last two cards for my 1970 set in the mail. Fresh from ebay wins were Ernie Banks and a Munson rookie. SInce the Munson rookie card was opened last, I will consider it the last card. Here is the skinny on my 70 set: When I got back into collecting a few years ago, I decided to start up on a 72 set. I reached a point where the majority of cards left on my wantlist were either stars or hgh numbers. I had a choice to make, start spending some big dollars, or start up on another set. Well, it wasn't too difficult of a decision. I had about 200 1970 cards and after one trip through a box at Bill Henderson's table, I was on my way. (This is a pattern that would repeat itself many times, as I now am in pursuit of 57-77 with more projects lined up) Slowly, I was able to knock card off the list, and after the show here in Chicago last November, I was left with three cards - Johnny Bench, Banks, and Munson. We just had another big show out here in Chicago a few weeks ago. My number one goal at that show was to finish off the 70 set. As I alked around the tables Friday night, I wasn't really finding what I was looking for. Bench cards were going from 40-75 bucks, Banks 28-40, and Munson rookies were anywhere from 40-80 bucks. Granted, some of these cards were in very good condition, but I did not want to spend that kind of money. I was looking for some lower priced cards that might have been just a tad dinged up. When I came home Friday night, I decided to check each card on ebay. I found that I could easily beat the show prices. I went back to the show Saturday and continued my search for the three cards, finally deciding that I was not going to make a purchase on any of the three. That night, I placed bids on the cards on ebay. Bench was the first to get knocked off the list. A week later, he was followed by Banks. And a few days after that, Munson fell too. I held off on knocking the cards off my wantlist until they were in my possession. And Thursday, Banks and Munson arrived. Knowing myself, I will have to go through my box one time just to make sure I really do have every card. But, I have officially retired my 1970 wantlist. If you made it this far, thanks for sticking with me. Be safe. ================= Date: Sat, 08 Apr 2006 19:22:04 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: jdelott@aol.com Subject: Crappy star cards for trade Over the years I've accidentally purchased duplicates of some key star cards, and figured that at some point I'd put them on ebay. He had a very solid year, over .300, and a fair number of dingers, unusual for Capilano which is not noted as a hitter's park at all. He was labeled a "can't miss" kind of player, and apparently Topps agreed, since his '61 RC carries a Star Rookie designation. Who knows if it will help, but ..... what could it hurt!!! Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2006 10:27 AM Subject: Gas War This is something we all can do. Today on the ABC news I heard this story confirmed. Also the fact that Exxon just kicked Wal-Mart off the top of Forbes list for biggest profits. We can do this. A GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It ' s worth your Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..... not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people. I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us sends it to at least ten more (30 x 10 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on! to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE >>>>HUNDRED MILLION >>>>PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am, so trust me on this one.) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you? Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we NOT buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK. Anna Wilson ================= To: biggies@aol.com,OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2006 08:53:15 -0400 From: Bob Saxton Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] From Bannon- Fuel War Response Here is the flaw in that reasoning, courtesy of www.snopes.com: Origins: This year's litany of complaints about gasoline prices is a re-run of the same program from years past: Gasoline prices in the USA are too high; gasoline is a unique commodity whose price isn't subject to the usual market forces of supply and demand; OPEC and greedy American oil companies secretly manipulate the market to keep prices artificially high; and a simple boycott of a couple of brands of gasoline will rectify Oil companies can manipulate their prices somewhat by controlling how much gasoline they produce and where they sell it, but they can't alter the basics of supply and demand: prices go down when people buy less of a good, prices go up when people buy more of a good, and prices go way up when demand outstrips available supply. The "gas out" schemes that propose to alter the demand side of the equation by shunning one or two specific brands of gasoline for a while won't work, however, because they're based on the misconception that an oil company's only outlet for gasoline is its own branded service stations. That isn't the case: gasoline is a fungible commodity, so if one oil company's product isn't being bought up in one particular market or outlet, it will simply sell its output to (or through) other outlets: Economics Prof. Pat Welch of St. Louis University says any boycott of "bad guy" gasoline in favor of "good guy" brands would have some unintended (and unhappy) results. . . . Welch says the law of supply and demand is set in stone. "To meet the sudden demand," he says, "the good guys would have to buy gasoline wholesale from the bad guys, who are suddenly stuck with unwanted So motorists would end up . . . paying more for it, because they'd be buying it at fewer stations. And yes, oil companies do buy and sell from one another. Mike Right of AAA Missouri says, "If a company has a station that can be served more economically by a competitor's refinery, they'll do it." Right adds, "In some cases, gasoline retailers have no refinery at all. Some convenience-store chains sell a lot of gasoline — and buy it all from somebody else's refinery." A boycott of a couple of brands of gasoline won't result in lower overall prices. Prices at all the non-boycotted outlets would rise due to the temporarily limited supply and increased demand, making the original prices look cheap by comparison. The shunned outlets could then make a killing by offering gasoline at its "normal" (i.e., pre-boycott) price or by selling off their output to the non-boycotted companies, who will need the extra supply to meet demand. The only person who really gets hurt in this proposed scheme is the service station operator, who has almost no control over the price of gasoline. The only practical way of reducing gasoline prices is through the straightforward means of buying less gasoline, not through a simple and painless scheme of just shifting where we buy it. The inconvenience of driving less is a hardship too many people apparently aren't willing to endure, however. Also the fact that Exxon just kicked Wal-Mart off the top of Forbes list for biggest profits. We can do this. A GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It ' s worth your Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can work. Please read on and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..... sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. I noticed the posts on gas prices so i thought i would like to mention i noticed gas at over $3.00/gallon for midgrade at the Arco station on the corner where i live in Northridge,California which is close to LA.Just wanted to let you know what it costs here. I went to a local Target discount store this morning and noticed come baseball card packs from a Tristar company called "Hidden Treasures- World's Greatest Card Chase".The packs were 2 for $1 on sale even thought they were marked 99 cents each.It also had written on the packs "5 licensed baseball cards per pack".There are susposed to be randomly inserted "Class of '36 Diamond Tickets" in some packs for your chance to uncover the Grand Treasure tickets. Each ticket holder will be flown to the Grand Treasure Ceremony to take place on July 11,2006 during the All Star Game festivities with a chance to find the T206 Wagner.(isn't it a coincidence that ALL 6 of the "randomly" inserted Treasure tickets showed up in packs purchased by the 6 sons of the owner of the Tristar company!!) Since they advertised "a chance to find the T206 Wagner" they should have had the "hunt" for the card during Easter because it could have been like an easter egg hunt i guess. It mentions on the pack this Tristar company was established in 1987. It also has on the pack "Find The Most Valuable Baseball Card:T206 Wagner worth over $100."(A Wagner worth over $100?I wonder what Wagner card they are giving away;some creased reprint card the Tristar owner discovered in his Dover publications book his mother bought him in a Woolworth store when he was a kid?) To me this looks like just a big ballyhoo promotion to get people to buy packs of worthless junk common 80's and 90's cards this company sweeps off the floor at Toy stores where kids open packs and throw cards all over the floor. The packs probably contain a few junk Topps and other company 80's and 90's commons but i bought the packs not for the cards inside, but the beautiful color wrapper with a nice pic of a T 206 Wagner, Ruth Goudey,Ty Cobb T 206 redback, Mathewson T 205 and a Honus Wagner Cracker Jack. Anyway, i bought a few of the packs to give away to OBCers.I thought i would send them to OBC members along with cards off their want lists. It looks like the first OBCer who is going to get one of these packs is John McLaughlin.I noticed he likes the Tigers and Al Kaline and there was a Kaline Upper Deck Lasting Legends game used bat card on the bid board yesterday i bid on an won for 25 cents.I bid on the card because i wanted to send the card to John because he likes Kaline. When he gets the Kaline in the mail next week he can report back if one of the "Class of '36 Diamond Tickets" was in the pack of Tristar Hidden ================= Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2006 01:15:22 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "mikesportsfan" Subject: California Trip and Toronot show I am flying out to Ontario, CA on April 28. I can do any of these w/o the help of a price guide - IN FACT I like that kind of trade much more than checking to see that your trade is not off by $2.70 (Sorry to those who live and die by the guide - I do not). Just my 2 cents worth, and I won't tack that on to the next trade just give me your 2 cents back ;-) BE WELL!!! REGARDS ----------------- MARK -------------- Original message -------------- From: "geno.wagner" OBCers -- How often do you guys buy the SCD Price Guide (or whatever you use)? I been buying the big, SCD book every two years because it's a good for pretty cheap. However, it seems to offer less and less each year as modern section grows. I do feel like I need somewhat up-to-date prices I trade with non-OBCers, otherwise I wouldn't know what is "fair" - it pretty good for that. If they would go to a two volume format with realistic prices, I would definitely continue to buy the "vintage" one. Does anyone else have any insight on how they value cards to bid on, etc? Do you use an old SCD book or a new one? Do you track prices on certain cards, in effect making your own "p rice guide?" Just curious as to what others do... Take Care, Geno YAHOO! I did buy them every couple of years but since I got this last one, I haven't felt the need for a new one. I don't care about any newer cards and I simply continue to buy cards based on the price in this edition. This may explain why I don't win as many auctions as I used to, though I bet a lot of the prices are close still. I have kept adding cards to my database and grading and pricing them for many years now. Basically, the common and most star card prices dropped on most sets that I collect from the 1996 through the 2000 editions. Some stars and some high #s went up. From 2000 to now, I'd guess prewar and graded cards have risen significantly but those aren't big with me so I guess I can hang with the 2000 a bit longer. Hi guys- this is Linda- i just had to share information on this great lot of 58 Topps now on ebay.Usually OBC type lots of cards mean lower grade worn cards. What i really look for is an OBC type lot with the cards in great shape but with writing on the bottom white margins of the cards. Then you can win a big lot of cards cheap but they aren't worn out but are in great Ex shape.A big lot of 58 topps like this has shown up on ebay.I doubt i can bid high enough to win it but some of you may be able to-check out ebay # 8799702028. This seller also has a lot of 61 Topps with those ink marks in the margins with a LOT of those impossible Hi #'s.I am high bidder on this one fortunately.I am really going after this seller's 61 Topps lot. He also has a lots of 500 vintage cards and one has a 56 Mantle which i am fortunately high bidder on currently. But check out this sellers other lots of 500 vintage cards with stars-This sellers lots are OBC heaven guys! ================= Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2006 21:46:11 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Linda" Subject: An (Od)d Brooklyn Dodger from the 50's-Who was he? I think these cards are of great interest to OBCer's because even though they were issued in late 198O's they are not UV cards of modern players but of Negro League stars of 1933.And the sepia coloring makes them look like old period cards. Since Goudey and others didn't issue cards of Paige, Gibson and they are usually only available on expensive, impossible to find Cuban league cards, some of which were issued after their playing days like Josh Gibson. The Conlon World Wide Sports sepia cards are the closest we are going to get to contemporary issued cards of great Negro Leaguers.I think these Conlon sepia issues look like they could have been from the time as opposed to the Negro league players in the Ted Williams set which definitely have a "modern" UV look.I like the Ted Williams Negro League cards and any other contemporary issue of Paige, Gibson, Bell, etc but the Conlon sepias are the only ones that evoke the nuances of vintage issues. World Wide Sports also issued Sepia Conlons of the major leaguers Conlon took pictures of.These were issued in blister packs sold in Toys R Us stores too.Hardee's restaurant in the midwest also issued a few of these Conlon Sepia colored cards too. They must have made some contract or agreement with World Wide Sports to issue a few of the cards through their restaurants. It has the logo Hardee's on them. One of the Hardee's Conlons is of Ty Cobb. Perhaps the scarcest issue of the Sepia Conlons by World Wide Sports was a boxed set picturing Ruth on the cover with 3 sets of cards inside and a book in the box.I never saw these for sale at Toys R Us but only at a few dept. stores in malls.-Linda ================= Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 02:21:42 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Lynn Miller" Subject: Working in Cuba Now Hi Gang, I've been here just over a week now.
