I actually purchased several of the 33 Goudey's. I didn't buy any of the HOfers but I looked through them. All had decent fronts with normal wear (including the corners). The backs looked like the cards were attached to album sheets at one time and had been removed. Some of the writing is still visible, however, there is at least 60%++ "back damage" with either paper loss or album paper residue. I'm not sure if the album paper can be removed. His other commons were VGish with no problems except normal wear. He was asking $12-$16 for them. I know nothing about Tatoo Orbits but the ones he had seem to be from the same collection as they appeared to be removed from an album page as well. The fronts were "clean" but I don't know if they were trimmed or not. The backs either had album paper residue or paper loss. I would say they would be nice cards for those who like to "look but not read". I had my OBC hat on at the show and was treated like royalty: Kurt going through the bins trying to find cards that might make sense. No pressure to buy, just friendly help. I looked at his 33 Goudey Gehrig at 1% of book (I think). The card was trimmed by someone so that all that was left was the figure of Gehrig with the name on top. Sorry for the long rambling however, I did promise to mention my experience with the group. PS I got the standard 10% OBC discount at the end ( plus a couple of cards). "Steve Rittenberg (Earthlink)" wrote: OBC friendly dealer Kurt Turdot has told me about a new load of pre war Goudeys (including many $20 HOFers) and Tattoo Orbit cards that he has available. As of now, there are no scans on his website. He said that the prices will be from 5% of BV and LOWER. He specifically wrote this: "As far as the Tattoo Orbits, too many to list, I have a lot in the tub that are trimmed (and really trimmed) from 5% on down. I think there is a Connie Mack for less than $10. If somebody has a list, let them know! Also I have a number of Goudey HOFers in the $20 case. Fronts are decent enough, most have bad backs." Some eBay sellers pad the selling price by inflating the S&H. They will justify charging the additional $2.60 in your case on handling charges and fees incurred in the sale. I don't like the practice but eBay policies do not help since they only charge a "commission" on the sale price, some sellers are trying to avoid some fees by charging more for S&H which does not get figured into the final eBay line. The bottom line for me (and many others) is establish your buying price in an eBay auction taking into account whatever the S&H fees are going to be. If you get the item at a fair price then don't sweat how the seller "makes his profit margin". As an example, just a few days ago I won an auction for 50 Helmar cards (since I decided to jump on this bandwagon) for 1 cent. Of course the S&H charges for this item are set at $25, but I think 50 different Helmar card at $25.01 is still a good deal and I will not be complaining when the seller spends $3 or so to send it. I don't think eBay would be too happy over this transaction and might get "pissy" over it, but I'm not going to complain because I get what I want at what I consider a reasonable price. Ask yourself this Rob - do you really want to get all bent out of shape over this? Would you have paid the same price for what you got at a card show? Do you think eBay makes enough $$ and that the sellers should be able to "hold on" to more of a profit margin? Good Luck with whatever you decide to do Rob, but I wouldn't loose sleep over this. I know there will be some dissenting opinions, as there always are on this topic, but you asked so you get my 2 1/2 cents worth. BE WELL!!! Subject: 000007? /All time HR list / occupation list / OLLIE /Fallen/

I have 4 questions.

#1= The site counter says I'm visitor # 000007. I'm just curious...was
it reset by accident? I've been watching it climb towards 1,000,000.
Last I saw it was "about" 563000 or so (under 600000 at least).

#2= Can someone point me to an UPDATED (aka current) All Time HR list.
A top 10 is better than nothing but I'd like to see the Top 100.

#3= Does anyone have a current occupation list of OBCers? John Leroux
did one a few yrs ago. If not (and assuming JL is no longer interested
in doing it) can the OBCAC give me approval to create one in the
database section of OBC-Ramblings on YahooGroups.com? Of course it
would be optional, meaning anyone wishing to NOT be listed could be left
off the list. I do realize that some of the people may be listed on the
password protected profile section. Also this would not necessarily be
listing company names but rather the TYPE of job such as TAX ATTORNEY,
DIESEL TRUCK MECHANIC, SCIENCE TEACHER etc.

#4= Has anyone heard if OLLIE BROWN will be at the National in
California in 2006? I read on the net where he was at the last game for
Jack Murphy Stadium so I figure there may be a chance. He was the
Padres 1st Expansion Draft pick by the way. If anyone hears about him
please LMK!

Dave Fallen, Al Autry emailed me today and is considering breaking up
the 8X10 B&W KC Omaha set and selling you the Gary Martz card for your
WASH State born set.

Brock, envelope to you goes in the mail Saturday listing the shops I
found in the Atlanta area so far (only 11 as 2 closed recently). If you
need 1966 #539 in any cond it will go too, for your 2nd set. I'll check
yiour list after this email (that's what I was about to do when I
discovered the 000007).

Rob, The exact details (which I can't read since I don't have a link or
#) of that specific auction you bid on is important. So it depends on
the price of the cards and condition they were stated to be in, how he
stated he would ship etc. But Mark's message covered it pretty well.
If they are below EXC to start with they probably won't be any worse
when they arrive. Probably not worth the stress but who I'm I to say
that :-)

While I had him on the phone, I asked him about "Ted Williams Day" in

Breaking the case may get you in the emergency room. Try one of these
safe methods (guaranteed to work):
Method 1. Get a heavy duty pair of shears, secure the slab in a vice
grip, and cut the top of the slab and liberate that sucker.

Method 2. Fold a towel around the slab a few times. Put the towel on
a concrete floor. Get yourself a nice, big claw hammer and wack the
hell out of the towel. Love the sound of broken slab! Open the towel
and liberate that sucker. An excellent stress reliever.

I used both methods and had 100% success. Good luck.

I use a band saw. I cut on all four sides, about 1/8 inch in from the edge.
It works very well, with no damage to the card.

I agree whole-heartedly with Geno's perspective on both the magazine and Tim's article. Actually had me looking at lots of fine/wide (and even "medium") pens on eBay. Then something like common sense hit me--and I decided I had enough sets working for the time being.

I got this from another group I'm a part of, & I thought it might bring a
smile to those of you who have either visited Detroit, or live there. Enjoy!
For all the visitors, from other than Michigan, coming to the Super Bowl in
1. First, you must learn to pronounce the city name. It's Deh-troit. NOT
DEE-troit. If you pronounce it DEE-Troit then we will assume you are from Toledo
and here for the country Music hoe-down.

2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Detroit has its own
version of traffic rules... Hold on and pray!
3. The morning rush hour is from 6:00 am to 10:00 am. The evening rush hour
is from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.
Weekends are open game.

4. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended, cussed out
and possibly shot. If you're first off the starting line when the light turns
green, count to five before going across the intersection. This will avoid
getting in the way of cross-traffic who just ran their yellow light to keepfrom
getting shot.
5. Schoenherr can ONLY be properly pronounced by a native of the Detroit
metro area. That goes for Gratiot too.

6. Construction and renovation on I-94, I-96, I-75, I-275, I-375, The Lodge
and The Southfield Freeways are a way of life and forever. Just deal with it.
7. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory
defect or they are "out-of-towners"

8. All old men (or women) with white hair wearing a hat have total
9. The minimum acceptable speed on I-696 and I-275 is 85 regardless of the
posted speeds. Anything less is considered downright SISSY. Oh, and don't even
think of allowing more than one car length between cars!

10. That attractive wrought iron on the windows and doors in Detroit is NOT
ornamental. DO NOT get out of your car to take pictures.
11. Never stare at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that says
"Keep honking, I'm reloading", he/she is.
12. If you are in the left lane, and only going 70 in a 60 mph zone, people
are not waving because they are so friendly in Detroit. I would suggest you
13. I-275 and I-696 is our daily version of NASCAR.

14. It's not M-10, it's "the Lodge" !
15. That's not a lake, it's a pothole.
16. If someone tells you it's on Outer Drive, you better hope you have a map.
17. The Michigan left turn is simple. If you want to turn left, go a =BC of
mile past your turn, get to the left, then make a left, then make another
left, then make a right when you get back to the intersection where you wanted
turn left in the first place. NOW you have gone left.
18. And those 2 really ugly arches over Telegraph???? DON'T EVEN ASK!! WE
DON'T HAVE A CLUE!!!!!

Yea Geordie,

Back in "the early days" of my tenure with OBC I was on a kick to send stuff out books from my library that was enjoyed as a kid but had not been looked at for years. I sent many books out at that time and had not heard of them in quite some time. The deal was to pass it on after you read it if you didn't want to keep it for your personal collection. My guess is that many of those books are sitting on OBC'ers shelves (or buried in a messy office, in the original box) having been enjoyed they are now a part of a special collection. I use to place a sign-in card on the front binding for the reader to sign and pass around, the book I sent you might have such a page Geordie. Thanks for reminding me about that - BE WELL!!!

Subject: Super Super Bowl weekend

This weekend was great. Got up early on Saturday as I had free
passes to a private party for the NFL Experience. Tickets were for
8:00 am when it was not open to the public until 10:00 am. The
private party was for me and 14,000 (give or take) of my closest
friends. I was accompanied by a couple of buddies and 1 of their
families, including his 9 & 11 year old girls. W ewere able to try
out about 15 of the attractions, including where they put you in a
harness connected to a bungee cord on a moonwalk type surface. I
enjoyed that. I also had the kick of my life in a try your luck at a
field goal. Best kick of the day from anyone who I saw attempt it.
I could not repeat it if given another 1000 tries.
We also checked out some of the other activites around downtown.
From what I heard, people were pleasantly surprised at how Detroit
did in hosting the Super Bowl. I can tell you we had a blast. Later
in the day, I went to the Celebrity Flag FB game. This was NOT an
official Super Bowl event. The NFL should be glad they did not
sanction this as it was boring and we left just after halftime. What
a disappointment.
Sunday was a card show, that Mark Talbot met me at. I was able to
finish my 1969 Milton Bradley set (subject to audit for gremlins)
with Rose, Maz, Morgan and Stargell.
As Peter Mead indicated working on numerous sets can lack some common
sense. However, it seems I get worried anytime my lists start to
drop below 500 sets that I am working on. With the Milton Bradley
set being the 3rd set I have finished this year, this was in danger
of happening. Therefore I started 2 more sets at the card show.
These sets are 1975-76 McDonalds Philadelphia 76ers punchouts and the
1969 Glendale FB Stamps. I know many of you have your dupe boxes
stuffed with these issues, so check out my lists.
After the show, Mark and I headed over to a card shop that I have
frequently picked up stuff to offer on my Dealer scum offerings. It
was Mark's first visit and he found a few cheapies that he needed,
including one of the worst Gary Bergman (former Red Wing) cards I
have ever seen.
Went to a Super Bowl party and won a grand total of $6.85. Now I can
go back on Ebay. I have been picking up some TCMA sets lately and
still need to figure out how many sets are not listed in the SCDs. I
am closing in on having about 1/2 the TCMA sets in my 2001 guide. I
am finding numerous errors and variations in these sets. I ahve
never been good at spotting these before, but these are easy to
find. Cheap vintage retro sets. I do not know why they are not more

Subject: Letter from Doug...

Hi all... Last week I sent a short note (yeah, right! ) to Doug
Smith. I received a letter back from him yesterday and it sounds as if
he is making the difficult adjustment quite well. He noted that the
facility was not quite as restrictive as he had anticipated but that
it's still not exactly where he expected to spend his retirement. It
seems that about 75% of his fellow inmates are there for drug charges
and that most do not have a high-school education. He also mentioned
in the letter that he would like very much to hear from others in the
group. I know he screwed up bigtime, but that seems to go with the
territory of being a fallible human being, in my books (heaven knows
I've made my share of mistakes). I intend to keep writing and would
like to give a gentle nudge to any of you on the edge to go ahead and
write. Doug gave so much to this group (and society, frankly) before
he got caught up in his bad choices/addiction that I can't just write
him off.

His return address on the envelope was:

Douglas Smith

P.O. Box 15330
Ft. Worth, TX 76119

Take care...

P.S., If you would like a full copy of the letter I received, let me
know. Doug wrote: "Please share whatever parts of this letter you want
with the rest of the guys!"

I would like to thank Aaron Shirley for a great package of cards. Aaron

also added a SCP unmentionable for my player collection. Thank you for the
cards Aaron.

Well, the interview is postponed a couple of days, was going to be
tomorrow. Billy Hoeft and his bride are on their way from Michigan to

delayed a couple of days, so now it looks like Wednesday for the call.
Bill Jr. figures Terry would be bent completely out of shape if he

Subject: Offers from Nigeria

A recent "rambling" from our friend Chris Stufflestreet implied that emailsfrom
Nigeria should be ignored. I recently attended a luncheon and the speaker
was humorist Dave Barry, (who I had autograph a baseball for me.) In Barry's
new book "Money Secrets" he has this to say about such emails:

"Some of the get rich quick proposals look pretty good. I got one in particular
from a businessman in Nigeria, who wrote me a very business-like emailstating
that, in a nutshell, he wanted to send me $47 million.
I didn't totally follow his explanation - there were a lot of details - butthe
gist was that there was some kind of business srewup in Nigeria (you know
how it is in business) and a bunch of businesspeople decided that, for business
reasons, they needed to send somebody $47 million, and somehow my name
came up.
It seemed almost "too good to be true." But as I say, the email was very businesslike,
so I replied that, sure, I would be willing to take the $47 million.
You probably know what happened next. After a few email exchanges, the businessman
informed me that some "minor technical problems" had cropped up - something
about "Nigerian government red tape" - and that in order to "smooth
things out" and send the money to me, he needed me to send him an "advance
fee" of $5,000.
I was a little suspicious and my friends warned me to be cautious, but $5,000
seemed like a small enough investment for a return of $47 million. So I sent
a check.
No sooner had it cleared than my businessman "friend" sent me another email,
apologizing and saying that there were more problems, and that he needed another
At this point my friends were all telling me that I had become the victim of
a classic "scam," and that I was crazy to send any more money. But I was so
blinded by greed, so hooked on the idea of getting my hands on this hugefortune,
that I went ahead and wrote a second check for $5,000.
Two days later, I received $47 million in cash. It came via UPS in 578 large
cardboard boxes. I have cash all over my house. If I want a helicopter, Ijust
grab a box and go buy one. My money worries are over forever! And why?
Because I did not trust my friends. They're not even my friends anymore, now
that I am extremely rich. I hang out with new friends that I met at thehelicopter

Subject: Top sports complaints/things you would like changed

What can I say...I like lists and sports!!

1) I miss afternoon baseball playoff and WS games. I still remember
hurrying home from school to catch a game on TV.... and we wonder why
kids lose interest in baseball!!! My 7 year old (as of tomorrow...
and yes he's getting a new baseball glove!!) loves the game.... but
he can hardly stay up to see the starting lineups.... heck I have a
tough time making it to the end!!

2) Football players showboating after EVERY play!! OK you save a
touchdown and win the game... go ahead and celebrate.... but when
you tackle a guy after a 20 yard gain why are you talking at all????
I think the offense will take those "big plays" any day!! Remember
Jack Lambert throwing Cliff Harris to the ground after he mocked Roy
Gerela's missed FG?? What would he do to these guys today!!!

3) Players who worry about their stats/highlights instead of winning
the game. Guess you can blame some of this on the ESPN Top 10
approach to media sports coverage but come on..... Can't remember the
NBA player but there was a guy who tried to get an extra rebound by
shoting at his OWN basket ..which would have given him 10 rebounds...
go.... team??

4) Adult autograph seekers who elbow in front of kids.... My 2
oldest (8 and 6)were waiting patiently at a minor league game to get
an autograph...only to be rudely moved aside by a whole group of
older autograph seekers... who didn't even thank or acknowledge the
player for the autograph....

That's enough of mine for now... comments/complaints/ complaints to
add anyone?

Subject: Dup Box Needs Help

In the last month or so I have been upgrading several sets and now the dup
box is overflowing. A lot of these cards are in tipton shape, trimmed, written
on, typed on (yes a Post Cereal card was typed on), miscut or whatever.

A little story behind the 1970 Fleer World Series Cards (blue backs) is I bid
on evilBay on this lot of Cards which also included a wrapper. There were a
couple of cards I needed off my wantlist and I also wanted the wrapper for my
wrapper collection. Anyway I get the cards and wrapper, but the cards have
some kind of unidentifiable stain on them. So, I write the seller and tell him
that he did not describe the cards as being stained. He writes me back and
says he will refund my money and to keep the cards and wrapper as he did not
want to relist them. He also said the cards had been up in his attic awhile ?
and the stains were from bubble gum. Whoever gets these cards can let me know
what the stain is? Your guess is as good as mine.

Anyway enough rambling - have at it with my dups - naturally FCFS.

I am going to convince him I=92m not totally deranged, only a little bit.
My bride went over my list of questions, and managed to talk me into
striking quite a few. She figured I would have him on the phone for a
couple of days, so we pared the list down. For example, she asked if it
was really all THAT important to me to ask him if he puts his left sock
on first, or his right. I think I=92m back on track with my questions now.

Oh yes, this is going to be fun=85=85report to follow=85.

Tonight, the mail brought a T213-2 Dunn(Baltimore). After about 10 years,
this is my 170th different T213-2, and most importantly it completes my T213-2
basic set of 98! This set was issued over 3 years from 1914-16. There are 98
different players, but with caption variations to capture team changes, there
are 188 different cards. There are no known complete sets of 188. I know one
person within 3, and one within 4 (yes, they need the same three cards). If I
could just get those last 15/18 variations!

Subject: The Billy Hoeft Chronicles (Part 1)

Spent about 90 minutes on the phone with Billy, Bill Jr. and Terry.
Billy has an excellent memory and remembered lots of fine detail. What a
gas=85.I had a bit of a time trying to scribble notes, and have to wait
for the DVD that Bill Jr. is sending me, but here=92s a bit of an excerpt:

Billy could have been a Bonus Baby like Kaline and Joey Jay. Asked him
about turning down the =93Bonus Baby=94 money which would have been huge
coin back then. He said it was a calculated gamble, based on the advice
of his HS coach. Had he accepted, he would have had to go right from
high school and spend a year with the team, mostly riding the pine, and
he didn=92t feel ready for the Majors anyways. He said it pretty much paid
off, he had two very good years in the minors and pretty much got better
money anyways when he signed his first contract with the Tigers in =9252.

Asked about the transition from H.S. ball to the minors to the bigs-
Not that bad=85.the same H.S. coach taught me early on that no matter what
league you are in, it=92s still the same distance to the plate. Only
difference is, the batters are better and you have to learn to be
smarter than them. Once I figured out that it was more mental than
physical, I was okay.

Made the All Star Team in 1955, but didn=92t get to play- disappointed?
Hell NO! I was happy enough to just be there. I was going to pitch the
top of the 13th. They left Frank Sullivan in for the 12th, and Musial
pinch hit a homer to win it.

In 1956, you win 20 games and don=92t make the All Star Team. Damn
baseball writers shouldn=92t be allowed to vote. I don=92t like the fans
voting either, too much ballot box stuffing. It ought to be the players.
Thought that back then and think it now.

In 1959, you get traded to Boston, then Baltimore- do you uproot the
family. Hell yeah. What you do is rent out your house to some other
player during the season, and move back after. Norm Cash rented my
house, and a couple of other pretty damn good hitters. After I got
traded the first time my house became a Hitter=92s House.

You now are becoming a reliever rather than a starter- Yeah, that was
Paul Richard=92s idea. He said I had a good strong arm and there was no
reason he couldn=92t use me for both. I didn=92t care, as long as I got to

Any significance to your wearing #44? Not really=85.back then, anybody who
had played a bit for the big team already got to wear #=92s under 30.
Rookies got treated like s*** and had to wear high numbers so everyone
knew you were green. I ended up with 44 and just kept it.

Did teams do anything to prepare you for life after baseball, like
financial planning? Hell no, they didn=92t give a rat=92s a** about you once
they were done with you.

Did you have any interest in coaching after your playing days were over.
Well they asked me to, but I ain=92t a yes man, I couldn=92t do it.

Your fave manager to play for? Paul Richards.

Pitching Coach? Harry Brecheen. Mostly pitching coaches left you alone.

Asked him about Charley Maxwell on behalf of Earl K- He was a quiet guy
who could only hit homers on Sundays. We called him =93Greenback=94 because
he always played left field way too short. He wanted to protect his
fielding average so bad, he didn=92t want to take the chance of missing
balls deep. Kept falling over when the ball kept getting hit over his
head, and ended up with grass stains. Ball was hit deep enough that it
was a single of course, and not an error. Used to drive us crazy. We=92d
yell at him, but it didn=92t make any difference.

Asked on behalf of Jim Wiehe if Gus Triandos hit his first dinger off
him. Are you kiddin=92 me? He did? I don=92t remember that, but he must
have been with the Yankees then. I=92ll have to remember to ask him.

Part 2 to follow=85.

Subject: Billy Hoeft Chronicles (Part 2)

After your first two unspectacular seasons, you went 16-7, 20-14, an All
Star appearance=85what made the difference? I learned how to get ahead of
the hitters, and then just plain challenge them. I had a real good
fastball, and if I could get the right count on them, I could usually
blow it by them.

3 homers is your career, all in =9253, 2 in one game off Skinny Brown. The
other? Pascual of Washington. I hit that one a ton into the upper deck.

Newcombe wins the Cy Young in =9256 when there was one award for both
leagues. Whitey Ford gets the only AL vote, you get none, but you won
20, he won 16 with a better team. Your thoughts? Damn baseball
writers. They always liked the Yankees and Mantle in particular.

In 1960, you get sent down to Miami of the Int. League. Was that injury
rehab? Nope, they just wanted me to get some innings. Knew I wasn=92t
going to be there for very long. Played a lot of golf.

Any superstitions? Yep=85never step on the lines on the way to and from
the dugout. And if I won, I=92d wear the same socks and undershirt the
next game. When I lost, I=92d do laundry. I was a little stinky that year
I won 20.

In =9266, you get released by the Giants. Any thought of catching on
anywhere else? Nope, knew I was done. Too bad, 3 more wins and I would
have had 100.

Were you a baseball card collector as a kid? Not really, but I had some.
Put =91em in the spokes of my bike wheels like everyone else. A few years
back I did round up sets of my cards for each of my kids. (Editor=92s
Note: They were surprised to hear that I have 4 different =9153/=9254 Dixie
Lids of Billy, and didn=92t know about the =9262 T Venezuelan, or a couple
of other oddballs..)

Any idea how much your =9252 Topps RC is worth? In really nice shape
somewhere around $400 I think. (He=92s right=85.even a mid-grade goes for a
couple of hundred).

=9253 Glendale Meats cards- any idea how that Tigers set came about? Nope,
don=92t remember those. (I sent him a scan).

Casey Stengel once said he thought very highly of you. Did the Yankees
ever come calling looking for a trade? I heard some rumours back around
1960 or =9261, but nothing came of it.

Anyone from your era that you feel should be in the HOF but isn=92t?
(Besides yourself of course.) Not really, can you? (I suggested Roger
Maris.) He said you=92re kidding, he=92s in there isn=92t he? If he=92s not,
should be=85

Besides guys we all know as Superstars, name a couple of hitters who
gave you trouble. Nellie Fox and Hank Bauer. They gave me fits. Just
when I thought I had them set up, I=92d throw one maybe 4-5 inches off the
plate, and the next one was gonna smoke right by them, but those two
could somehow reach that far out of the box and somehow manage to bloop
the ball for singles. Drove me nuts, those two. Now if you asked my a
superstar I had no problem with, I=92d say Ted Williams, I had his number
pretty good. Got Mantle out a lot too, but he still managed to pound a
couple out.

If you had to pick someone from either before or after your playing days
that you would have liked to try your stuff with, who would it be? (A
lot of thought went into this=85long pause=85)=85..Joe Dimaggio. He went out
in =9251 and I started in =9252. If I had to pick one guy to try on for
size, it would be him.

Great questions! And thanks for sharing this with the
group!! My two favorite baseball era's are the
Deadball era (1900-1920) and the 1950's. So I'm
lovin' this interview you are having with Billy. As a
member of SABR, I was wondering if you had asked Billy
if he was interested in doing a biography? Grant...I
think you and Billy should write a book together,
about his life/playing days :) Also, SABR has a
baseball biography project. Basically it's an effort
to do a bio. about every major league player. I
noticed that no SABR member has asked to do a bio. on
Billy yet. Damn shame. Maybe you'd be interested in
doing that as a project? You would have to join SABR,
if you are not already a member. Well worth the $, I
think. Anyway, just some thoughts I wanted to share.
I'd love to see Billy's experiences added to the body
of research and information of this era. I think *a
lot* of people would be interested in reading about
Billy's playing days. Thanks again for sharing!

Personally, I had my eye on the iMac computor (sic) - it's hardly been usedby
anyone! The item description is as follows:

"Comptuor has been used, but not too much, the loading is a litle slow, but
after that the fun never ends."

This lot is ideal for me, since I'm currently using an iBook, so I can probably
transfer all my data easily. The best part is that unlike the various sports
he has up for auction, there's no reserve on the 'computor'... although there
isn't any info about memory or hard drive and it says the operating system isn't
included, but the screen is 14 inches (in what direction is anyone's guess from
his otherwise in depth knowledge about his items) and I just love never
ending fun! I might go up to $1.25, but feel free to snipe me for $2 or so...
kinda leery about the vague shipping costs. :-)

Just too much fun.

Subject: Water, water evrywhere (but not a drop on my cards!)

Thursday was not my best day ever.... One of our bathrooms
flooded... damaged a good portion of our main living area as well as
both of our bathrooms (they now have no floors and balancing on a
beam while taking a piss is beyond my capabilities!)... the basement
ceiling broke open and probably trashed our computer.... and we will
probably be out of our house for close to a month....

On the good side no one was hurt, we have insurance, nothing
irreplaceable was damaged... (my computer was slow anyway..and it was
probably time for a major bathroom renovation!!) My cards are all
safe and sound (other than a stray Dave Kingman card...) which
actually is amazing because most of my cards were on a table next to
a stream of water running out of the ceiling!! I have learned my
lesson and will keep my cards at the least in a plastic container
with a lid!! You can store them up high but when the water comes
from above that's not too much help!! I would suggest you guys think
about doing the same (but you're probably all smarter than me and
have already done it!) I cringe when I think about how close I came
to having to start over with my collection!

That being said I obviously will not be too quick to respond to e-
mails, RAOK, sendf thanks etc. for a while since my computer access
is still very limited... I have cards to go out to a couple guys
(and some thanks to post) but locating them will be a challenge for
at least a couple days... thanks for your patience!

Hey all.

First, I wanted to mention that I've added a top ten to my
wantlist. I had been thinking about it for a while. My biggest
reason for not doing it before was that I was already getting a
steady flow of cards coming in from so many generous OBC guys, so
there was really no need to prioritize any of my list above any
other part of it. Everything I've gotten has been a joy. I
mentioned that of course anything listed anywhere on my wantlist is
a card I'd like to have...

Okay, second item. Does anyone have any soccer cards? I'd like to
find cards of Marcelo Salas, because he was born on the same day as
me. I know nothing about professional soccer, but he's a Chilean
professional soccer player, and is apparently pretty darn good. I'd
like to figure out all the professional sports figures who were born
on December 24, 1974, and at least get one card of each, if
possible. So far, I know of 3 MLB players: Kevin Millwood, Jamey
Wright, and Keith Luuloa (although various sources have some of
their birthdays on different dates). I haven't found any cards of
Luuloa yet, as he played only 6 games for the Angels in 2000. I
know he has a 1999 Bowman #179, but I am unaware of any other cards.

Does anyone else collect cards of players born on the same date as

Third item, kind of related to the second... for those of you who
compile a wantlist of a favorite player's cards, what main sources
do you use? I know that beckett.com used to do that, but for some
reason I can't access that any more. Stupid buckett.

One more question. With as varied as everyone's collections are,
it's not usually possible for your entire collection to be
displayed. What cards do you display, and in what ways? What cards
are in binders, boxes, plaques, and what other clever ways have you
displayed your heroes? I'd like to hear some responses from
different members, and if you want to email them to me off-list, I
can compile some of them and put it in a future post...

Thanks for your time,
Aaron Shirley (the relatively new guy around here, who hasn't heard
all of you talking about your collections for the last 15 years)

Subject: The Billy Hoeft Chronicles (Part 3)

Every player gets asked for his highlights, and yours have to include
hitting two dingers in one game, and tossing a one hitter. I=92d like to
ask what your biggest disappointment in baseball was, if there was one.
Disappointment? Maybe never making it to a Series. But my real
highlight was meeting my wife Marjorie in Spring Training in (couldn=92t
catch the year=85) =9252?

You are one of few pitchers to strike out the side in nine pitches. Do
you remember who the batters were? Really? I didn=92t even know I did

You were there for the early years of Black integration=85.what are your
recollections of that era? Yep, I was. By the time I was there, it was
mostly all right. I only ever really had a problem with one guy, and I
don=92t want to talk about it. (He mentioned later in passing that it was
Earl Robinson of Baltimore.) Ozzie Virgil was the first black on the
Tigers. He was from the Dominican. I=92ll never forget he arrived at the
ball park in a limo at his first game at Briggs, he won it for me. Went
5 for 5. We tried real hard to get him up once more to give him a shot
at 6 for 6, but it didn=92t work out. He was a good ball player and just a
great guy.

What was the funniest thing you ever saw happen during a game? (Long
pause=85.heavy thinking going on, then he started to laugh=85his boys were
laughing at Billy laughing) Chuck Stobbs of the Senators, around
1960. Oh, he was pitching a helluva ball game. Then he lets go with a
fastball, and it goes directly up into the grandstand on the 1st base
side, half way between first and home, almost takes a fan=92s head off,
but doesn=92t hit anyone. No idea how he did that. They had to stop the
game for a bit, everyone was laughing so hard. Finished him for that
game, for sure, couldn=92t pitch after that.

Did any other players you were with in the Minors in Richmond and Toledo
make it to the bigs? I can only think of one, and he did okay I
think=85He was with me in Richmond=85.name is Bunning.

What was your favorite stadium for whatever reason. Briggs and Memorial,
loved both of those.

What players do you still see socially today? Oh, I see Kaline,
Ginsberg, Garner and Bertoia quite a bit. Looking up Killebrew when I go
to Florida in a few weeks.

When I do searches on Ebay for Billy Hoeft items, I sometimes see a
Hoeft Chicken Feeder listed. They were patented around 1913 and are
quite collectible apparently. Was that an invention by someone in your
family? Not that I know of, I never even heard of one before. But
believe it or not, there=92s lots of Hoefts around.

You led the league in ERA in =9261 with a 2.02 average, but your =9262 Topps
AL ERA Leaders cards says 2.04. What say we start a class action
lawsuit? (Hilarious laughter from Billy and the boys=85.)

How=92s your golf game? I think they=92re making that damn hole smaller
than they used to=85.but I get out a lot.

(As you can see, my interview lightened up over the course of our
conversation. I then finished it with a word-association game=85.I said
I=92m going to name a few players, and I=92d like you to just throw out your
first response)

Jim Piersall- He was CRRRRRRRRAZZZZZY
Minnie Minoso- just a real good ballplayer, could do it all
Mickey Vernon- he hurt me! Hit me on the ankle with a screamer of a line
drive and put me on the injury list
Elston Howard- a good, smart hitter
Albie Pearson- the little WUSS!!!! Only ever wanted to bunt against me
Matt Batts- good catcher, couldn=92t hit
Bill Skowron- another real good hitter
Denny McLain- brilliant inside the lines, outside the lines he was an
Norm Cash- He was crazy, once went up to bat with a table leg, Luciano
wouldn=92t let him. Won the batting title in =9261 the year he rented my
house. Funny guy. First guy to turn my house into a hitter=92s house.
Dean Chance- nuttier than a fruitcake
Bo Belinsky- too bad, he was a typical left-hander like me, a real
Joe Pepitone- never really knew him

This pretty much ended the =93interview=94 and we went on to just yakking
about stuff. When I get the DVD there will likely be lots more that I
couldn=92t keep up with, and if anything really good comes up I=92ll pass it
on=85.the Grand Finale is coming up, so stay with me. I put my pen down
and we all had a chat about life, etc, and we got around to baseball
today compared to how it was when he played. You=92ll like this:

=93I think I was there for the best years baseball ever had, the Glory
Years. One thing we DIDN=92T do was EVER show somebody else up. Today, I
look at Bonds, and when he hits one, he just drops the bat and admires
it. I tell ya, if he EVER did that to me, his next at bat would be real
interesting. The first pitch would be outside a few inches, and the next
one would be right in his ear. I wouldn=92t take that crap off of anyone.=94

Yeah, Billy, me too. And THANKS!

My conclusion and personal thoughts to follow in the next day or so.

As always, make sure PayPal and eBay messages are directed to you by name. If it is sent to "eBay member" or "PayPal member", then it is a phishing expedition. You can also mouse over the link - all the ones I get have an odd URL in addition to the supposed destination.

Forward all suspicious email to either:

Well, it was grand indeed. For the newer guys in the group, Billy was
more or less the inspiration for the Hall of Mediocrity, which can be
found on our home page. Just some great names in there, many of which
came up during our conversation.

I readily admit that talking to Billy is the highlight of my baseball
=93career,=94 since I still live in the =9150=92s and =9160=92s, which is a
giveaway to my age, I guess. I found Billy a little tight at first,
almost like he was trying to figure out if I was a nut, or sincere.
Didn=92t take long for him to warm up, and he became really open with his

Advice for those of you that have an unsung hero- just do it. Write to
them, ask them if you can call, or better yet, if you can, try to
arrange a meeting. I=92d love to meet up with Billy, but it=92s a helluva
long way from Vancouver to Michigan, and I don=92t have a VW van. It=92s an
experience you just will never forget. And if you get lucky and get a
chance to ask questions, so much the better. I tried to make mine a
little off the wall, and did a LOT of research before I started asking.
I tried to avoid the usual questions that they are likely tired of
hearing, going instead for a touch of the personal side, and really
obscure stuff that shows you are truly interested and have done your
homework. Asking him about the Hoeft Chicken Feeder for example, almost
had him in hysterics, and he had never heard of it. And he liked being
asked about his family. Billy thanked ME at the end, and I think he was
truly flattered that there=92s still baseball fans out there who care.
Heck, he was the one who made MY day.

Just do it.

Well gang, if you haven't seen it SCD is reporting that Ft. Washington Expo
Center has been sold. The May EPSCC #95 will be the last show in the current
facility. A new site will presumable be announced shortly. The old
building will be razed an an office park installed instead. Kind of sad but it's so
close to Philly I guess it's worth more that way. The acrd show only used
about 1/4 of the available space so I presume a new venue is not going to be a
problem. Still, I think the Expo Center was the biggest facility between
New Jersey and Georgia but I could be mistaken.

I have only been to one show there but it was a doozy. Lately though, I am
more in tune with supporting our twice a year "Long Island National", coming
up in April. I remain undecided about whether to attend the March Ft.

Got an e-mail from a webhead from who-knows-where asking about 51-52 bowman

about twice what they are worth, like everything else he sells:

Subject: How I spend my winter weekends - at least one last time

Hello OBCers -

I generally don't hit the Ramblings corner too often, but tonight I thought I would mix a little of the personal and the sports. For the past four years nearly ever winter weekend of mine has been spent at a wrestling tournament. I don't know if any of you or any of your kids have done any wrestling, but my son Daniel started shortly after we moved here to KC from the Dallas area. I grew up in Minnesota and absolutely loved wrestling until I had to quick in high school due to an issue with my vertebrae. Daniel picked up on it very quickly, and is a natural. He started as a freshman and made the varsity team. He is rarely the strongest kid on the mat, but generally the fastest, the smartest, and the one with the most heart. As a freshman he qualified for the State Tournament, much to our shock, but got injured in practice the week before. Oh well. In his sophomore season, Daniel started out great, got injured and missed much of the season. He came back in time for
regionals and made the State tourney. He won one match before getting eliminated in a tough weight class (140 lbs). In his junior year Daniel did great. He won several tournaments at 145 lbs and compiled a great record. As the season wore on, though, he wore out. Cutting weight become a chore and in the regional tournament he hyper-extended an elbow. He fell one victory short of a medal in a weight class that had 8 previous medal winners (they only give out six, so some guys were bound to go home disappointed). This year Daniel started out terrific again. He went 8-1 in a tournament in New Mexico (lost to the defending NM state champ). Won a tournament in Iowa. After a couple of local tournaments he found himself ranked #3 in the state for 6A schools! Then a rib muscle pulled or separated against a kid from Nebraska. He had trouble getting it healed and we weren't sure if it would. He made it back for a tournament in Missouri and got his shoulder separated in the
championship match. One doctor said to rest it for 3 months. The other one said he could wrestle if he could stand it but he may need surgery after the season. He slipped down to #6 in the rankings, as he missed several weeks of tournaments. He decided he would try it at the local East Kansas League dual tournament two weekends ago, a mix of 5A and 6A schools. The #2 and #4 ranked 5A kids were there. When we arrived we also learned the #3 ranked 6A kid from 145 lb class decided to move up to 152 for the rest of the season. That meant 5 matches in one day, three against excellent opponents, after laying off for 3 weeks and fighting a serious cold. He went 4-1, losing only to the new kid in his weight class. Then this past weekend was the regional 6A tournament. He again had to wrestle the kid who beat him the previous week for the regional championship title, but this time Daniel won! So tomorrow we head for Wichita and the state tournament one more time. This year,
Daniel brings a 34-6 record, and a #1 seed for his division of 4 wrestlers. The #1 ranked kid in the state is on the other side of the bracket, so who knows what will happen. Wish us luck, and Daniel good health. I only know that no matter what happens, that last match will be bitter sweet. I have loved watching this kid wrestle his heart out weekend after weekend. He has had many ups and downs. (Ever had to sit in the stands and watch a trainer try to pop your kids arm back in the socket?). Our family has rejoiced and cried together. But it has been a truly great ride. I wouldn't trade it for anything...and I know I will miss it incredibly.

(Now, if only he would accept that offer from the Naval Academy, maybe I can see him wrestle again)

Thanks for reading this Morganesque ramble! .......... Doug

It's a little late in the month, but better late than never. This month's
list focuses on sets / collections that are oh so close to completion - one
or two cards for completion.

1.	1969 Topps #500 - Mickey Mantle. Last card for the birth year set.
Mantles are expensive and I am cheap - not a good combination for completing
2.	1968 Topps #490 - Mantle/Mays/Killebrew . See #1
3.	1968 Topps #487 - Lee May
4.	1960 Fleer #3 - Babe Ruth
5.	1962 Bell Brand #9 - Wally Moon. I should have knocked this set off
long ago, but a combination of thriftiness and laziness keeps this card on
the list.
6.	1982 FBI Discs #21 - Jim Rice - Yes, its post 1980, but you try
finding one. (Only two more to finish up my Jim Rice collection)
7.	1978 Royal Crown Cola Iron-Ons #103 - Jim Rice
8.	1977 White Sox Tribune #8 - Oscar Gamble (Only two more to finish up
my Oscar Gamble collection)
9.	1973 (or maybe 1974) Indians Team Issue #12 - Oscar Gamble. I have
either the 73 or 74, but I need to investigate which one I need. Please see
#5 about laziness.
10.	1987 Pocatello Giants The Bon #9 - Mike Greenwood. This one is a
stretch, but I needed to fill out my list. This is for my all baseball
players named Greenwood list. I found an Old Judge, but I can't find this

Subject: National and Red Sox tickets

Heya kids...

I've been working on my trip to Anaheim and I'm trying to figure out where to
stay and how to fly in. Seems like all the non stops go to LAX, maybe a 40
minute drive (non rush hour) to Anaheim. I may spend Friday in LA, truck to
Anaheim for the week and head back to LA Sunday for a Monday flight. Are there
any ideas of hotels near the convention center? I'll probably be making this a
long vacation, arriving the previous Friday and leaving the following Monday.
I have friends and family that I plan to catch up with and I have to hit
Disneyland! The Dodgers are the team in town that Friday against the Nats, so if
we are doing a game, that's going to be it. So who has plans to attend so far?
And how the hell does Steve plan on getting all his cards there?

On another front. I am desperately seeking tickets for the Red Sox and Mets
in Fenway in June. I've been waiting for a few years for the east to play the
east so I can make this my first trip to Fenway. My preferences are from the
Thursday game back to the Tuesday game. Any and all dates are ok. Anyone got
connections? I was on the website for hours in the virtual waiting room
(thought I was at my orthopedist), but to no avail. I'm checking Ebay for tix. So
any of you Mass guys into hitting the game with me and can get me a handle on
tickets, you just may get to spend an afternoon with me taking the duckboat
ride. (After seeing the Red Sox WS video, I HAVE to do that).

This National may be more of a logistic thing than past ones, so I think we
should start setting this up soon. I'll have the cell phone list ready...

Subject: Helmar and T218 Footnote

On the Helmar card of boxer Stanley Ketchel, it states that he was murdered
on October 15, 1910. I looked it up, and it is true. He was shot in the
back by a lowlife named Walter Dipley, who claimed that Ketchel was fooling
around with his girlfriend. It seems more likely, however, that Dipley and
the girlfriend conspired to murder Ketchel and rob him, because Ketchel was
known to carry large sums of cash on his person. It is a fascinating story,
for those who want to look into it.

I looked at my T218 card of Stanley Ketchel (incorrectly spelled
"Ketchell"). The card gives a brief biography of Ketchel, but does not
indicate that he had died. Interestingly, the T218 card of Frank Klaus
tells us that Klaus had a fight on October 29, 1910 (a "no
decision").........two weeks after Ketchel's death. Both of these cards
were part of Series #1 (there was also a Series #2). So it is not possible
to tell whether the T218 authors knew that Ketchel had died, but did not
care to mention it, or whether it was too late to add it to the card.

Here is another interesting tidbit. The T218 set has four aviators. In
1910, aviation was apparently considered a sport. It must have been a very
dangerous sport, because the T218 cards tell us that 3 of the 4 were killed
in 1910. Ralph Johnstone was killed on November 17, 1910, "when executing
one of his famous spiral dips." One too many, apparently. Arch Hoxsey was
killed on the last day of 1910, "when returning to earth in a series of
perilous glides." And John B. Moisant was also killed on the last day of
1910 in New Orleans, "when testing his machine preparatory to taking part in
the competitions there."

So why did Stanley Ketchel's T218 card fail to tell us that he died on
October 15? This is particularly hard to understand, considering that they
mentioned at least one fight that occurred on October 29, and three deaths
that occurred in November and December.

Thank you, Helmar, for correcting this long overdue oversight.

I started the group about 12 months ago I think it was. We now have 35
members including V&E author & expert Dick Gilkeson plus representatives
from Krause Publications (SCD), The Antiques Road Show and Beckett! It
probably wouldn't be too cool to mention the term BUCKETT in this group.
The first time he'd think it was just a spelling error I guess but it
HAS already happened once (they didn't know a Beckett person was in the
group) so hopefully it won't happen again :-)

V&E author & expert back in the 80s, Ralph Nozaki ("covertly" known as
DJ Rick Odell from WNUA 95.5 in Chicago) never signed up and I never got
Keith Olberman's email addy. But this is still the #1 V&E group in the
world. Ralph may not have even collected any cards in the last 10
years. I have 3 email addys for him but he never acknowledged being
Ralph (no reply from any of the 3) or answered my polite emails where I
mentioned I bought his book. Maybe his spam filter blocked all 3, but
I doubt it.
Why don't one of you in Chicago stop by and see him?! Chris
Stufflestreet was considering a move to Chicago and that'd be a great
interview for his newsletter I think! But whoever goes I can see it

YOU: Are you Ralph?
HIM: You talking to "ME"?

If I had the sound byte from Taxi Driver I'd install it here in the
email like Glenn from OBC did that Monty Python stuff last year! OK
I'm getting carried away again.

Anyway, not to slight anyone else in the group (esp George V who
answered my call for a discussion leader!) but thanks in large part to
Shawn Adkins we have "detailed files" (enter Terminator sound byte here
"I HAVE DETAILED FILES") listing all the baseball variations from the
past decades. We are up to the 1990 Fleer Dave Martinez I think. We
have over 100 pics showing them too, thanks to Ken Morganti, Sal Domino,
Tom Housely, Mike Cady, Darren "Wild Man" Hughes, Randy Trierwiller
(sp?), of course George V & Shawn and probably a couple others I forgot!
I just created pic albums today for Basketball, Football, Hockey, Boxing
and Non-Sports pics, so hopefully we will get some pics uploaded soon.
So if you have an interest in V&Es click the link above and sign up!

Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Helmar and T218 Footnote

Keep in mind that in 1910, some news was known to
travel incredibly slow. During the WW1 years
(1917-'18) it would take up to two months for news of
a soldier's death or injury to make it home. Even
with wire services and the ability to send news in an
instant (like the Titanic sinking in 1912) some
"lesser news" like the death of a prizefighter may not
have been as easy to spot as the death of an aviator.

As for the pilots crashing...even today the crash of a
single-engine plane makes big headlines because of its
sensationalism. In 1910, planes were still new and
the crashes were big news. On the other hand, boxers
and "pugilists" dying under mysterious circumstances
weren't as uncommon as you might think.

After sayung that, there is also the possibility that
George's hypothesis that the biographer knew of
Ketchel's death and chose to omit the fact is correct.
It seems to me that death is too serious a subject to
leave off the card, especially when you consider that
three aviators have their own deaths mentioned.

My guess...if the news was available of Ketchel's
death and the writer of the bio on the back of his
T218 card left it out on purpose, it may have been
because the details of his death were still under
investigation and he didn't want to write an account
that might later turn out to be false, thereby setting
up a lawsuit from the bereaved family.

It's a good question though.

Take care,

I hate to disappoint you, but if I find an Estrada or Stobbs for $50, they're
going in my set :-) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate either forless
than $80 so far, which is why they're two of the last three I need for the set
(Mathews being the other). Send me your list and I'll take a peek at some of
thetables for you though,

Well, it is true that some news traveled slowly in 1910. However, Stanley
Ketchel was a pugilist of national prominence, and the sensational news of
his death made the front page of the New York Times the following day,
October 16, 1910. A copy of the article is attached. There was no doubt
that he had been murdered, and the killer was correctly identified, although
he had not yet been apprehended.

I think it is very unlikely that any interested person would remain unaware
of Ketchel's death for mare than a day or two after the fact. I also doubt
that people lived their lives in fear of lawsuits, as many do today.

And here is another interesting fact to ponder: both the T218 and T220
boxing cards were issued by Mecca Cigarettes in 1910. The T220 card of Joe
Gans, who was the Lightweight Champion until July 8, 1908, states: "He died
of consumption in Baltimore, August 10, 1910."

The deaths of prominent people from gunshot wounds was by no means unheard
of in 1910, and I have never heard that anyone was reticent about discussing
it in public.

It would be interesting to see an uncut sheet of T218's, so we could verify
that these cards were really issued at the same time. Does anyone have one
laying around?

Take care,

Subject: OPERATION UPDATE

The operation to take "down" my colostomy bag, and " rehook up the plumbing"......
went great!!!!!!!!!!!
I came home late Tuesday afternoon. I have about a 5" horizontal gash just
below my ribcage on my left side. I am pretty sore yet...and last night
had to sleep in my recliner, as I cant really lay flat on my back withoutputting
some pressure on my wound.....This 5" cut is dwarfed by the 10" scar
that I have on my right side.........

If any of you guys have had to take the "prep" the day before a colonoscopy.....to
"clean" you out....you know how that is.....
Well, I had to do the prep on Thursday........I lost 15 lbs. of water in a little
over 8 hours..........It was just unreal .......I then went without food
or water from Thursday night till Monday morning....... I did have an IV
line in me......trying to replenish fluids the whole time I was in there,
but that's not really a whole lot of fun.

I finally had my first food yesterday morning......all went well................and
then they "kicked" me out..........YIPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEE.

I plan to take the rest of the week off......to get stronger at home, and then
get back to work next week........

Thanks to all who sent me good wishes.

For quite a few months now I have seen thanks and ramblings from several
new members. When I dive into the directory to see what I could send
them, I haven't seen their pages listed. I thought this to be strange
that they would not have pages listed but didn't follow up on it until
recently when I asked TJ why I couldn't see his page listed. He told me
that it was indeed listed, so now I began an investigation. Turns out, I
had the Directory page bookmarked but it is a different page than the
one I can access from the OBC site menu. Now I have a lot of new guys'
lists to look at. This message in case there is another brain dead goof
like myself out there who didn't figure this out.
