"Please allow me to (re)introduce myself, I'm a man of (not much) wealth and taste..." Greetings from the Granite State! Gee whiz, it's been a long time - much too long as a matter of fact. As some of you may recall, I went though a nasty divorce that lasted nearly three years (!) which was the reason I have been virtually, but unofficially, inactive within OBC. Those troubles are now a thing of the past...as is my inactivity :-) As some of you have noticed, I have been sending out a few cards and I have to tell you: it feels pretty good! So what have I been up to lately? I'm glad you asked! And for those that didn't really ask, I'm gonna tell you anyway... I'm still working in the same job that I've been in for the last 11+ years: I'm an export representative for a company that manufactures semiconductor-related equipment. Not exactly a party topic, but it's a living. After my 'situation' was resolved earlier this year I decided to do lots of things, not much of which was very constructive. I took a couple of hikes and golfed every weekend from May through September. Funny thing about my golf game this season: I had one of my best years in recent memory. What's the secret? I didn't keep score once! Basically I convinced my golf group to play match play with me for a beer. Since I only bought once all year, I consider that a good season! When it's been too lousy outside (like its becoming now) I have been playing cribbage whenever I can. I belong to a club that plays on Wednesday nights (currently in first place - hooray) and I won my first tournament sanctioned by the American Cribbage Congress, which is the "governing body" of organized cribbage. Plug alert...If you like to play cribbage, you may want to check out www.cribbage.org. I have also been playing some poker, though sparingly because of the nice weather. I even went to Foxwoods twice in the last 3-4 months and came home with more than I went with. I guess that's a good thing! Earlier this month I attended my first show in perhaps a year: the annual Wilmington, MA Shriner's show. I went Friday night and Saturday and met up with Ken Morganti, Spike Glidden, Bob Donaldson and Sean McGowan. It was certainly nice to see the locals again! Although, our annual OBC luncheon (Saturday at noon) was the lowest I can remember: only three of us were there. Had there been a couple more of us, we could have matched the amount of people in line for Frank Robinson's autograph! At the show, and even a little bit before while perusing ebay, I was amazed at how much the prices of vintage cards increased in the last couple of years. It seems like they almost doubled! Even the crappers I collect are much more pricey, when you can find them. As an Economics major in college, I understand the supply and demand thing but wow! I though I had been out of commission for only 2 years, not 22. Those last three Obaks are gonna be tough... Even though my divorce is final, I still don't feel comfortable creating another webpage and posting a wantlist for all to see just yet. So, I will be posting my wantlists through the OBC Wantlist Server on or about the beginning of each month...starting tonight. Thanks to OBC for keeping my seat warm. You knew I'd be back, didn't you?? Happy Collecting! ================= Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2006 15:01:43 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: My annual push for Dave Concepcion for the HOF As many of you know, I've nominated Dave Concepcion for the OBC HOM - but I haven't given up on hoping that he'll be voted into the Hall of Fame. Bama sends me HOFer Hoyt Wilhelm from the 1955 Redman All-Star Series with the tab. Only 49 more tabs and I can send off for my Baseball Cap. Very much appreciated BAMA! I'm not clear on the official OBC rules on collecting sets beyond "if you have one it's part of a type set, if you have 2 you are collecting the set." Now I do have several Redman's already, however they are part of my Tigers & HOM-HOF collections. That, along with the fact that Hoyt is a HOFer and I have a HOF collection I would think nullifies my obligation to collect the set. My only concern is the fact that none of my other Redman have tabs, however I don't think that constitutes a variation. Even if it did, since I only have one I can call it part of a type set. Besides I doubt that variations constitute a separate set, but then again, I probably don't know squat about the unwritten OBC rules. As usual this Sunday morning caffeine induced ramble is rhetorical in nature and not deserving of a response unless I missed a clause and am in violation of any rule, for which I am sure I will be hearing from the We keep what we give away! ================= Date: Sun, 03 Dec 2006 15:02:53 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Tom Housley" Subject: A fun baseball reference site I found a fun site that I could spend hours on: baseball-reference.com. My favorite part? If you click on the "Frivolities" link at the top, & then on the "Oracles of Baseball" link, you can find a link between any two players in major league history. For example, let's use Mordecai Brown & Barry Bonds: Mordecai Brown played with Bob O'Farrell for the 1916 Chicago Cubs Bob O'Farrell played with Phil Cavarretta for the 1934 Chicago Cubs Phil Cavarretta played with Minnie Minoso for the 1955 Chicago White Minnie Minoso played with Jim Morrison for the 1980 Chicago White Jim Morrison played with Barry Bonds for the 1986 Pittsburgh Pirates Now, how cool is that? There are a lot of other fun things in the Frivolities page too - find out who was born on your birthday, or in your hometown. Katie was schedule to show up at the Patriots practice field at 8:15 Sundayto compete in the New England team PP&K competition in the 8-9 girls division. Since we are about 2 hours away we figured we'd get a hotel room nearby and head up there on Saturday. Since the NFL only gave us three ticketsfor the game my wife and youngest daughter just watched Katie compete while I stayed for the game with my two sons and Katie (we were able to acquire1 extra ticket). Well, the Patriots for some reason had us park in Lot P2which is at the opposite end of the stadium from the practice field so we had to walk at least a mile to get to the competition. Also, they made me and my wife each pay the $35.00 parking fee. Found out some of the other competitors parked in the lot next to the practice field for free. I'll have to remember that for the future. The competition started well as Katie got off a nice punt of 44+ feet (for those that don't know the scores are based on distance and accuracy. If you punt it 50 feet but are 6 feet off line you get a score of 44). Her pass went 49+ feet which is good but she threw 60 feet in the earlier round so she is capable of doing better. She later said she was cold (it was about 40 degrees). So going into the final event Katie had the lead 93 feet to 85 but it was time for her weakest event, the kicking. She got off a decent kick but it was quite a bit off line so she only netted 29+ feet. Unfortunately the other girl got off a 52 footkick to beat Katie 139 to 124 so Katie finished in second place in New England which I think is pretty impressive. When I participated as a youngster I didn't even place in my town! We'll have to work on her kicking for next Anyway, from 10:30 to 11:00 they allowed the participants on the game fieldbut once you entered the stadium you couldn't leave. I would have liked to go on the field but the kids weren't really interested and the thought ofsitting there for two hours waiting for the game to start and paying for the overpriced concessions were not too inspiring. So we headed back to thecar and did some tailgating with burgers, chicken, hot dogs, chips and soda. At 12:00 the kids and I heading in to watch the game and my wife and the baby hit the road for home. The game was close until the Patriots woke up in the 4th quarter to beat the Lions. We left during the 3rd quarter to beat the traffic as by that time the kids had had enough. Was suppose to met up with Ken Morganti who was at the game but it didn't happen. I wrote down the section and seat number that Ken was sitting in but forgot the row number. At least I remembered him saying he'll be wearinga #59 jersey. Well apparently Ken decided to switch shirts at the last minute so while I was standing behind his section looking for #59 he was two rows in front of me but I didn't know it because I didn't write down the row number! Maybe we can try it again next year. So here's my top five. My descriptions couldn't do them justice, but nevertheless, here we go: Gee whiz. This is the one site I use the most! It's a MAJOR information center. It includes very reliable information on individual players, including a lot of minor league and college info. But that's not even close to the full benefit of this site. Here's just a few of my favorite examples - you can find lists of players born in any state or country and organize them by debut or by city... players who were born or died or debuted or played their final game on a particular date... leaders in any major statistic at any age... team statistics... managers for a given team... winners of the major awards by year and league... this is a great site. One major focus: Message boards. But there are boards about the Hall of Fame, Minor Leagues, Trivia, each of the 30 current teams and several former teams... and even baseball CARDS! But BE WARNED - this site is VERY ADDICTIVE! Click around for a few minutes and you'll find "heated" debates on nearly any topic you could have ever dreamed of relating to baseball, and many topics you would never have imagined... many very knowledgeable guys (a few goofs too) that are regular posters at the site, and in fact the best part was that I was introduced to OBC through someone at BBF. www.simsclassicsports.com Couldn't leave out my favorite card buying site! You can search for Braves cards. That's why I like it. And I don't want to tell you too much about this site, or you might all start going there and buying all the cards I want! Haha. But as you probably know, they have a decent selection of cards, priced well, and the kicker is that shipping is super cheap. An obvious one, but I still spend a lot of time there. A little glossy, if you know what I mean, but hey, it's the official site of major league baseball. I like the fact that it's updated pretty quickly. You can find out when Glavine signs with the Mets (sigh) or watch game info updated with each pitch... I won't belabor this one too much, you all know it... Again with belaboring the obvious, I wanted to be sure to say that my top five baseball sites includes none other than... 'Nuff said. Honorable mentions. So here's five more sites, for those of you who are more the "David Letterman top ten type" than the "ROB GORDON TOP FIVE" type (someone please tell me you know what that means): Really cool info, a lot of lists that I don't really see many other places online, and, for lack of a better term, it's just got the basic all-around feel of a good old baseball website. Check it out and you will see what I mean. I like their motto: it's "Where What Happened Yesterday is Being Preserved Today." In fact, I would say that maybe this should be in the top 5 and MLB should be an honorable mention. But strictly speaking, I spend more time on MLB than this, www.sabr.org and www.retrosheet.org STAT HEADS REJOICE! www.minorleaguebaseball.com It's just cool. www.baseballhalloffame.org You may have heard of it? and last but not least... www.beckett.com (got to admit I use it - for one main reason: the My Collections tool is a good way to find out if your great grandpa Zeke really did have any cards. They have a way you can get a list of every card your player appeared on, from the ultra-slick 2006 bat- jersey-auto-authentic-game-used-chewing-tobacco-cards to the 19th century stuff.) Of course, after having typed all of this, I remembered there's a pretty good list of cool baseball sites on the "Cool Links" page at the OBC website, and several of these sites are featured there. But you were all aching for my perspective on things, weren't you? SO, everyone... By Bryan Curtis Posted Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at 4:33 PM ET Some tips on writing a letter to a major-league baseball player: Begin with the formal address: It's "Dear Mr. Wilson," not "Dear Mookie." The first sentence should read: "My name is Bryan Curtis, and I'm [a suitably young age to be asking for an autograph]." Next: "You are my favorite baseball player." This is a mandatory compliment, whether or not it happens to be true. Between the ages of 9 and 12, in what could be considered my letter-writing prime, I'm pretty sure I bestowed it upon every player in the National League East. Sign the letter and insert a baseball card—a "common" rather than a valuable card, in case it isn't returned—along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Check your parents' mailbox every day. You may do this, as I did, after a full-on sprint home from the school bus. Every few weeks, if you're lucky, you'll find an envelope with some exotic postmark—Chicago, Milwaukee, Arlington—and your card, now brilliantly autographed, inside. A final word of advice: You'll increase your haul exponentially if you avoid the All-Star team. Choose benchwarmers, utility infielders, and rag-armed pitchers as your correspondents. Gods may not answer letters, but middle relievers generally do. I recount all this because my mother, who still lives in the house I grew up in, sent me an e-mail the other day. Remember those ballplayers you used to write to, she asked. (My mother, it should be noted, made regular, if sometimes grudging, trips to the post office.) Well, she wrote, another one of them replied. Someone named Don Carman, a left-hander with the Philadelphia Phillies. When I got my hands on the envelope, it immediately became one of my favorite possessions. To look at my penmanship is to see a child who has labored just to write his Fort Worth, Texas, return address in a straight line. The envelope has a brown rectangular stain where a baseball card rested against it for years. Carman has affixed his return-address label—he lives in Naples, Fla.—and, touchingly, added additional postage, since I had included a then-current 29-cent stamp. The card, No. 154 in the 1989 Topps set, bears his big, looping signature, signed with a bright-blue Sharpie. Fifteen years ago, I figured Carman as a good candidate for a quick response. With the Phillies, he was a reliable southpaw who chewed up starts (35 in 1987, good for fourth in the National League), before leaving the majors for good in 1993. Where Carman showed greater promise was as a wit, a more cerebral version of Jay Johnstone. After enduring years worth of questions from benighted sports writers ("How'd it feel out there today, Don?"), Carman compiled a list of 37 suitably vapid answers that could be applied to almost any query. These included: "Baseball's a funny game"; "I just want to help the club any way I can"; "I didn't have my good stuff, but I battled 'em"; and, a personal favorite, "We have a different hero every day." Carman posted the list above his locker with a note that told writers, "You saw the game … take what you need." As it turns out, I am not Carman's only recent correspondent. In October, a Philadelphia TV station reported that Doug Ferraro, 23, received an autographed card from Carman in response to a letter that he had mailed out 16 years before. This was now a legitimate mystery, so I called Carman in Florida to find out what happened. "My wife told me it was time to clean the garage," Carman said. "So, I started digging through the stuff and found a box behind my tools. I opened it up and saw it was a bunch of fan mail, 200 to 250 letters." For Carman, this was a slight embarrassment. During his career, Carman had worked diligently to sign and return every one of the two or three letters he received each day. Judging from the date of Ferraro's card and the price of my stamp, he must have gotten our batch of letters some time in 1991, the year he left the Phillies for the Cincinnati Reds. "That year was the year I moved; I got a different house," he said. "I even remember putting them in the box, because it was unusual for me to do that. I thought I'd watch a football game and leisurely do them. It never got Carman could hardly bear to throw the letters away. But at age 47, he didn't have the enthusiasm to pick through them, either. So he paid his son Jackson, who is 8 years old, $4 to open and sort them. Then they sat down together, with Jackson, who never saw his father play, marveling at the rapturous odes inside. ("Dear Mr. Carman: You are my favorite baseball player. … ") At first content with merely signing the cards, Carman got caught up in the spirit and started writing notes to the now-grown kids. He lugged the envelopes down to the Naples post office, where he discovered that most of them included 25-cent stamps. "I told the postman I needed 250 10-cent stamps, and 250 4-cent stamps, and he just looked at me like, 'What are you doing?' " Only one of the letters gave Carman pause. Like nearly every other ballplayer, he made regular visits to local hospitals to see the terminally ill. It turned out that one letter was from a man whose wife Carman had visited. The woman had died, the man wrote, and he thanked Carman for brightening her final days. That lovely sentiment was now at least 15 years old. Carman perched over a piece of stationery for 20 minutes before he carefully scratched out his opening lines: "I know it's far in your past, but it's something that meant a lot to you. I know you carry her with you still." He wound up writing three pages. He's still waiting to hear from the woman's husband. After his playing career, Carman earned a degree in sports psychology from Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. He now works for Scott Boras, baseball's most rambunctious player agent, tending to the psychological demands of his clients. Even though he's been out of the game for more than a decade, new fan letters arrive in his Naples mailbox two or three times per week. The letters—presumably from grown-ups trying to recapture some small ecstasy from their childhood, when there was nothing more wonderful than receiving a piece of mail from a major-league ballplayer—contain the same platitudes. "Most of them say, 'You're one of my favorite players,' " Carman says. He is trying to answer them in a timely fashion.Related in Slate Slate's coverage of the Baseball Card Industrial Complex includes: "Requiem for the Rookie Card," in which Dave Jamieson tells the story of the crash of the baseball-card business. I'm already subscribed to a dozen servers connected directly or indirectly with this group ...and that's not even all of them. (If I collected OPC cards, that'd be another one I know of anyway). Besides, most if not all of the previous vintage non-baseball chatter has gone by the boards without any protest, as long as whatever it was fit into the pre-1980 mold. I grew up watching the home teams from the four major sports and collected the cards from the same as a kid too. This group has always been a throwback to those days of youth for me. Besides, most of my list is football now - all the baseball stuff on there is second sets or variations, except for six cards: a T205 Joss and five Post cereal short prints. If I couldn't talk about vintage football, then I'd have nothing to say - and I wouldn't want to disappoint my fans My dupes are a similar situation as well. I have only a couple rows left of vintage baseball dupes - and most of those are low numbers from '65-'73 that nobody needs. However, I've been slowly filling a 5000 ct. monster box with all the football dupes as I've progressed with my gridiron sets via eBay. However, I guess part of the reason for that is that there isn't as much of a demand for the football cards compared to the baseball. Either way, I don't think you'd get a lot of grief for offering up your 1965 Philly football or 1912 Hassan Lighthouse dupes for that matter. Having said all that, I want to share my excitement about my most recent eBay arrival, which happens to be a baseball card - a 1963 Post Cereal Nellie Fox (no bat). This particular variation has dodged me for four years. (I started the set during or after a Ft. Washington show in Dec. 2002). In fact, I wasn't even sure the card existed (I thought it might have been a misidentified Jello card that somehow made it into the guides) until a few months ago, when I spotted it as part of a partial set. Unfortunately for me, that set also had Mantle and a few other stars and short prints and sold for a couple hundred dollars, which was a lot more than I could reasonably pay to add just the one card I needed at the time. A couple months later, I did spot another one without the bat as a single card. I put in a bid for $40, which I felt was a pretty strong bid - it was the last variation on my list and double what the guide listed it for. It sold for more than double my bid. Imagine my delight when I stumbled across a freshly listed one two weeks ago with a 'Buy It Now' price of five bucks! Well, after two weeks of worrying that something would go wrong (my payment or the card would get lost in the mail, the seller would get another offer somehow and sell it out from under me), the card now rests in my nearly filled binder. Now if I can only luck into an Aspromonte, Adair and a replacement for my Jello Yaz card... Since I joined OBC, has it been 6 1/2 years already, I have noticed a steady INCREASE in the number of collectors of the other sports besides BB. I think it has much to do with people getting as close as they can on BB, before the cards they need get price prohibitive, yet they still have that collecting bug. A few like Ken, Brock and a few others, have completed the Topps and Bowman BB sets. By branching out to the other sports or to the heretics who go into non-sports, it still gives them something to collect. In many respects it is why I have so many sets on my lists. I often refuse to pay the asking price for the BB cards on my list, but I still can find things I "need" because I collect EVERYTHING. Amazingly, with perseverance and lots of swapping, I have actually turned some sets from having a type card, to a couple of samples, so I was collecting the set, to adding to the few until they became need instead of have lists and then continued all the way to set completion. Sometimes this is accelerated by buying a starter lot or by swaps with other collectors. The Helmar set is a great example. I never bought any. I got a few here and there from numerous in OBC and I sent back dupes I had in vintage issues. Sure enough my set was finished a few months ago. I do not complete many sets, but the pursuit is the fun. I truly treasure completing the sets I am able to finally put to bed. Last month was quite unusual when I finished 6 sets. 3 were purchased, 1 in a swap and 2 OBC generosity. Meanwhile, I was able to help 2 or 3 others finish sets of theirs. Long ago I suggested we change our name to OSC (oldsportscards.com), to know more accurately reflect what many of us already collect. I also have a group of Ogden's (1901) cards showing the British navy in training - if you want a type card, just LMK. As soon as I arrived I spotted Ron and he dragged me over to a regular dealers table where Dennis showed me some OBC specials items he brought to the show and I pulled a `54 Bowman Mantle, a `39 Playball "Lefty" Gomez and a `59 Topps Bob Gibson RC (more on this later). My next stop was over to Harold & Larry Olenick's table where a number of `61 Postiees were grabbed (Berra, Howard, Ford, Mays, Roberts & Klu), a set of `76 Orbacher's Discs (more on this), a stack of `65 Embossed with Mantle, Clemente, Yaz, Kaline and a bunch of others (more on these to come) and a big stack of assorted Kellogg's cards. Then I spotted Mike and met him by Jeff Ryder's table where I picked up a dozen Exhibit cards. I walked around and picked up some other stuff here and there and finally ended up at Mike Sandles table. Mike had a 5 cent sale going on. Everything on his table was going for 5 cents, not a lot going on here (mostly UV and `80's stuff) but it's fun to browse through Mike's stuff and see if you can find a treasure or two. I put the box down that had all of my new found treasures and began to look over all the stuff on Mikes table. I pulled about 150 "odds and ends" and John handed me a bigger box for me to put all my stuff in. I grabbed my "smaller" box and began to put the stuff in the bigger box and realized that another collector had mistakenly gone through my box and grabbed my `59 Topps Gibson RC. It was an honest mistake but some lucky collector walked away with my Gibson card for 5 cents, I was bummed since I had shelled out $20 for it but I was to find out more when I returned home. The `65 Embossed Mantle, Clemente, Kaline and Yaz were gone, a single from the Orbacher set was grabbed and probably some other stuff I don't even know about. Just goes to show you that there are some lucky deals still out there as today some lucky collector grabbed a Gibson RC, an Embossed Mantle, Clemente, Kaline and Yaz all for 25 cents. It was my mistake, I should not have put my box on the table and left it unattended, as a result MY show was not as good as it could have been. Does anybody have a spare Steve Garvey to re-complete my Orbacher set or a spare Gibson RC to trade out there? BE WELL OBC!!! One is an "Idiot Test", which is pretty self-explanatory. (I'll confess it took me two tries to get through it though ). The other is a link to a spoof of the movie "Singing in the Rain" as produced by George Lucas, which was very entertaining. A quick note to let my OBC Santa (Mac Wubben) know that the gift has arrived and I've hidden it in plain sight to remind me every day for the next two weeks that I can't open it... arrrgghhh. Also, the Wagner is returned to the dupes box. THANKS MAC!! Now for my trip to the card shop. (WARNING: Dealer Scum offering at the end.) I made what has become a rare trip into Boston to see my friend who works at the State House. He is one of the two other Patriots season ticket holders that I go to the games with. The bill came in for playoff tickets, so I planned to stop by to hand him a check for that, since he had already paid the bill on his credit card. There's a great card shop about a block or two away that I frequented very regularly when I was hand delivering the football pool I ran. (Now it's all done via e-mail and the people who played from the State House are no longer in it anyway.) I had met up with the shop owner at the big Wilmington show last month and he mentioned some beat up Look and See cards that he didn't bring to the show. I told him I'd eventually take a trip to the shop to check them out, so I finally made good on that promise. I don't know a lot about the set, but I took all the ones he had priced at a buck. He had a bunch of other non-sport cards there and I picked up a few odd cards that will eventually find homes in OBC somewhere. Next, I took a peek at his '53 Topps and pulled a Feller, Campy(trimmed on top) and Rizzuto for $40 total. He only had a half dozen '52 Topps, but one was a black backed Preacher Roe priced at five bucks. I also grabbed a few 62's (I figured I might as well buy a thing or two for *MY* list while I was there ), but since I didn't bring my list with me as usual, I ended up getting upgrades for a couple Ruth specials and All Stars, plus a 1964 Broncos team card to replace the badly off centered one I had. (I think I bought THAT one from him at the Wilmington show actually.) After showing me everything I wanted to see behind the counter, the owner went into the back and pulled out a couple boxes with about 5000 cards in lower grades, mostly from the late 60's/early 70's - I took only two cards from the box though, since he wanted $500 for it. It was almost all lower numbered commons. There wasn't anything special besides maybe two dozen semi-high 61's in a rubber band and what looked like a near set of sharp looking 1963 Topps FB (although I didn't look too close to see if there was any duplication). The two cards I pulled were a 1963 Post #6 Lenny Green (fifty cents for the SP) and a 1971 Kellogg's #27 without the 1970 Copyright. (Hi Mike Rich). After totalling it all up, I got a 20% discount on the whole lot as well. Sooo, everything previously mentioned is up for grabs, except for the (3) 1953 Topps, which are available at my cost, FCFS. The others will be given to whoever has the best reason I should send them the card - to give those who read the digest a fair shot. A list is detailed below. Don't be shy! The issue is made up of flip books and Jackie gets the only two that are sports-related. (The other flip books are Gene Autry and Howdy Doody.) #5 is "how to hit" and flips through a complete Jackie swing. Each page does double-duty. It shows one frame of the swing, but also includes tip text at the bottom. For example, "be ready to move forward against a curve, or remain back in the box for fastball." The complete text is pretty comprehensive and says something about the hitting style of the day. "The swing describes a FLAT ARC PARALLEL with the ground." (Emphasis in the text.) Sounds like a line-drive hitter to me! They call Jackie Robinson "Robbie" in the book, just like we call Albert Pujols "Polly" today. (Heh heh--guess that's just I think it's great that companies experimented with styles and turned out issues like this one. The SCD doesn't have much to say about it, but both this and the 1930s Goudey flip books are glimpses into popular culture of theday (i.e., movies and TV), as combined with baseball. As many of you know, I think the most I ever spent on a single card was my t205 Cobb for about $300. I tripled that and then some this week. First...I responded to a message board posting for someone selling N172 Old Judges. I always told myself that I would buy a Delahanty if I could find one under $1000. Now this might be a pipe dream but I saw a horrific one at the National for $950 that I almost bought. I worked out a deal for a Delahanty, McCarthy, Wood, and Gleason for just over $1000. That is two HOFers incl. a true key to the set (Delahanty), a tougher Phillie (Pete Wood), and the Black Sox manager back when he was on the Phillies (misspelled on the card as Cleason and carries a small premium for Old Judge and Black Sox collectors). This is unreal for me and really puts a nice hit on the Phillies collection. Other than the Magie (thanks OBC for that), this beat to death Delahanty is one of the most prized cards in my collection. Second...Brock sent me two SP '48 Leaf cards...to fufill the trade, I purchased a few T205s from Shawn Adkins. Brock thanks for the cards and the T205s are on their way. Thanks Shawn for the T205s.... In Shawn's email, he mentions he is really trying to collect a Piedmont Fact. 42 T205 set (or at least as many as he can find). What Shawn does not know until now is that I have nearly 40 of these...Shawn and I often bid up these cards on ebay (along with two other T205 collectors). No sooner do I close the email and check ebay...I find another...BIN'ed it for a good price. ================= Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 17:36:12 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "uthminsta1" Subject: please help with T332 Helmar Stamps Could someone who is knowledgeable about T332 Helmar Stamps please help me out? Rocky drove in the hour or so to pick me up on the way to the Gibraltar show that is 25 minutes from ny house. We get to the show to find out Robinson was a no show. We then went through the show. Had a bad experience with 1 dealer who got absolutely furious when I did not JUMP at a "deal" he offered me. Yanked the cards off the tabel while yelling that I blew it. I was just looking at the cards on the table, and had not said yes or no or countered his price. Real unusual to see someone lose it like that. As it was, I had already agreed ona small lot of cards from him. I did end up purchasing those, although I thought about leaving them there, as only 1 of the cards was actually for me (1971 Bazooka). I was able to pick up a few items, including 1 of the last 2 1959- 60 Topps Hockey Terry Sawchuk, some prewar hits, the 1971 Bazooka BB numbered version is actually a type card for me and 1961 Post BB #94 Stobbs to finish that set. I saw the Stobbs on my first pass through the show. Sticker was $150 and it is very nice shape. Asked the dealer if he could do better and he came down to $100. Offered $75 and he took it. Nice way to finish the base set. Still need some variations and about 15 upgrades. I was not planning on doing much more shopping for cards this year, as I long ago overspent my budget for cards. However, when I get some of these opportunities, I have not been passing them up. Mixed blessings. I have been picking up a lot of things I want, but spending lots of money in the process. Still lots on the wantlists as you all know and still have not my goals for a number of sets. Of course, other sets saw more progress than expected and new sets have been started. Here's my thoughts on Mr. Henderson: I could easily give him a 'no' vote, but I just choose NOT to support him with a 'yes'. Prior to 'the incident', he always treated me fairly and let me buy even his nicer stuff at about 1/3 book (stuff that he would otherwise charge half Buckett or more). He has a great selection of OBC type cards and there's usually a gem to be found if you look through his boxes hard enough... however, that's something I will never again personally because of that one bad experience. He probably wouldn't even remember it, so why would/should he apologize? Basically, I could careless if he ever did or not now anyway. There's plenty of other dealers out there with the Topps and Bowman cards I'm looking for... not that I need a lot ofthem to begin with. I think he has a lot to offer to the people he doesn't suddenly think are stealing one or two $6 hi-number Bowman commons from him, or not they may have spent hundreds at his table at just about every show prior to that... but I digress. I'm not going to try to dissuade anyone else from getting a bargain just because I think he's an idiot. I've bought cards from dealers who nobody would dare nominate (Steve Verkman a/k/a Jerkman) simply because he had them a decent price. He might be a total [donkey] when it comes to customer service and he's as friendly as a dead skunk, but at least he's never accused me of stealing. (I do try to visit his table when he's not around though.) The dealers I DON'T want to see on the list are the run of the mill guys who have mostly nicer or newer stuff and could care less what it says on our hat. There should be a footnote for the dealers who go out of their way to help OBC'ers... maybe we could just give a select few a special five-star rating or something? It'd probably only be a handful of dealers who specifically gave discounts simply for being an OBC member - and the way the voting is going, it looks like the top 5 or 6 names are the same people I'm talking about. (The cream is definitely rising to the top here.) That's all I want to comment about for now. It's 78 degrees here in Florida and I have a good wireless signal on my back patio...so I can enjoy writing this one. As far as Bill Henderson, I have always had positive dealings with him, from eBay (pre-OBC, I don't think he's on eBay any longer) to the Nationals I have attended. In Cleveland, he had a nice stack of 1952 Bowman Large FB...let me grab the three Steelers in the stack at $2 per (said he didn't have time to check the price guide -- one of them was a semi-SP). I heard from another OBC member (Mike R? I forget) that he picked up another hard SP from the same stack for the same price. And I've gotten along very well with Bill's assistant, but that might be due to my daughter. When we met him in Cleveland, Melissa was still 5 years old and melted everybody's heart. Bill even let her take a few cards from his 25-cent box for free. The next year in Chicago, they remembered Melissa the first time I showed up at the Then again...one time I showed up at Bill's table with an old issue of "Baseball Hobby News" from 1984 that had an article about him in it. Bill showed me another article in the same issue about an accident he was in on the way back from the National that year in NJ. He told me that the article got him in a LOT of trouble with his wife (he didn't tell her about it). He also went through the ads and remembered a lot of the sellers (some of whom are no longer around). I guess it's hard to get a bad impression of somebody after something like that. As for the others on the list...I give a HUGE thumbs-up to Wayne Johnson. The funny thing is that I may have never bought anything at his table at the Chicago National had Ron Perry not seen me and called me over. Wayne kept pulling out stuff he had in a big box and kept trying to make a deal while we looked through them. Once he came down to 35 cents a card (on '53-'56 Topps and Bowman), I finally said I'd bite and the two of us happily split the stack up. I went back the next day and grabbed some more loot...a 55 Topps Berra for $5, some '56 commons, and Wayne "talked" me into taking some semi-hi '53s too. ZThen he tossed in a '52T Campos (now in the collection of another OBCer). I'll be looking for his table at Cleveland this summer. I've also had some great dealings with Kevin Savage and his crew. They run a top-notch ship there. I think everyone at the table ended up with a copy of my booklet (and Pat even asked me to autograph the one I gave him when I came back to the table). Kurt Tourdot gets a thumbs up...and I believe that if you can't find something at his table you need either have a tough wantlist (like Brock...or like my Steelers needs -- Gary M. tried hard to hit that at Kurt's table in Chicago and failed). I met William Chappelle in Cleveland as well. He had posted to the OBC discussion board that he was going to keep a box of "Tiptons" behind the table, so I went looking for his table. He found me first. As I approached the table, he called out, "Hey OBC guy!" and pulled out FOUR boxes for me. He was one of the few tables I visited EVERY DAY in Chicago (Kevin Savage was another one). John Morrison...I've only done one deal with him. But it was exceptional. Once I said I was an OBC guy he made the deal so worthwhile that I've kept his email address for future reference. Plus he's a proud former US Marine, so I have added respect for him for that. Not sure if Dick Zimmerman is on the OBC dealer list. If he hasn't been added, he should be considered. In Chicago, I was referred to him by another OBCer (Gary M?) as a seller who might help me whittle down the Steeler list. He did, knocking out about 6 sets. One of them was the 1972 Sunoco Stamps set. He only brought stars, so I was still two Steelers short of the team set. Dick got my address and sent them to me when he got home. I know I've dealt with JD Heckathorn as well. Unfortunately, they haven't been memorable enough for me to describe them...but the fact that I didn't walk away from the table saying "What a (donkey)" so I guess that's positive. That's all I have to say on the topic, but I know I'll probably remember somebody else once I hit the "send" button. That said, I'll say to Bob Donaldson...of the list given to OBC, I didn't see a single name that made me say, "what the heck is THAT guy doing there?!" so I'll vote yes for the ones I mentioned above. Each week is something different like $5 off any ham, $1 off a super sub from the deli, etc. There's also one free item each week. There's a limit of one and it's usually something worth a buck (box of cocoa, one night movie rental, package of cookies, etc.). This week, the free item was a $3 bag of candy though. What could be better than that? I mean, it's FREE and it's CANDY! That's like my two favorite words The union rep visited the store last night. He makes it a habit to meet the overnight guys every one or two years... in case there's any pressing issues. The contract is up in a couple months and he was passing out pins that said "Save Our Benefits" - the acronym for the same is clearly spelled out on the button in big letters too... hmm, you think they might've come up with a better slogan? It just doesn't feel right to wear a pin in front of the customers that says S O B... did I get another title yesterday from the company? I A couple days ago, I was startled by what I thought was a mouse (the furry kind, not the computer accessory). I later confirmed this when I checked to see what was the cause of a 'scratching noise' from my closet and saw him running across the bar where all my shirts and stuff were hanging. It was the first time in the 40 years that I've lived here that I'd ever seen one in the house. I laid down a few glue traps and some bait, which the rodent managed to successfully avoid for two days. After that time, I figured he couldn't find any food in the house (if he did, then it'd be news to me) and he left however he got in. Then last night I heard a rustling sound coming from the trash bag. The trash went out a few days early this week ;-) Yesterday my bowling league held their annual Christmas party. This year we decided to do something different from the grab we usually have and we had a Yankee Swap. If you haven't been in one of these, it's pretty simple. Everyone brings a wrapped gift and draws a number. Everyone then goes in numerical order, unwraps a gift and lets everyone see it. The higher numbers are better because you have the option of keeping your gift or trading it for anyone else's before you. The number 1 has the last pick at the very end though. The gift I opened was a box of candy, which I traded for ...a different box of candy. (I didn't want to trade for one of the better gifts because anyone after me can swap their crummy gift for mine and I'd probably end up stuck with it... plus, it was CANDY!) The spending limit for gifts was $15. I brought a 3-D puzzle that was marked $15. I got a $5 discount when I rang it up at the register, so I bought a $5 lottery ticket and slipped it in under the plastic. A lot of the gifts ended up being just $15 worth of lottery tickets or gift cards. I thought the gift I put in was kinda lame, but the person who opened my present decided to keep it. (They were one of the last people to pick too, so they coulda traded with almost anyone.) Smart move... Remember the lottery ticket? A $20 winner. Figures, since I didn't buy it for myself. My friend calls me up last night, ruining my one chance to get two consecutive hours of sleep, to tell me he's putting this Babe Ruth card on eBay. It's a W-516 strip card he bought a long time ago - for ten bucks. I couldn't talk him into selling it to me for twenty... oh well. That's enough rambling for now. So...I tried to wait but justified that the east coast and central time were already celebrating christmas, I would open my OBC package tonight. Howard Morgan was one of my first OBCers I ever had the pleasure of meeting in person and I had the honor of him sending me my OBC Santa package. Howard did not disappoint. He sent along several oddball Phillies including a Tipton Makita Batter-up (I have about 10 of these now)...I cant even tell the player on this one. A diamond star Blondy Ryan. An Ethan Allen diamond matchbook cover, a Hires Hamner, and a Bowman Hamner. All very cool but not really the coolest thing in the package. To keep the cards company, Howard sent along a 1937 Phillies vs. Pirates program that was scored (Phillies won 14-8). Late substitutions including Chuck Klein and Paul Waner. Very very very cool item. Now, before you all start, I compared the writing on the envelope to the scored program and it is close but not the same, so Howard did not score this program himself. Big Christmas thanks to Howard "The Grizzled One" Morgan. After doing some checking...the Phillies did not play the Pirates to a 14-9 score during the regular season...so now I was really interested...here is what I found out...it is indeed a 1937 scorecard because it lists Hoyt on the Pirates and that happened only one year. It also lists Larry Crawford who played for the Phils for just one year as well in 1937. Did a little checking and Paul Waner was a contract holdout that year until April 9th. Although I cannot find a score anywhere...I did find mention that he played in at least one exhibition game against the Phillies before the 1937 I think this is an exhibition program. Which makes it even more interesting...thanks again Howard. Love this game! If you have a hub, a switch or router/switch that will allow both computers to be on the network at the same time you could map a drive from the new computer to the old computer and then copy the files. Mapping the old computer's C drive to the new computers G drive is done with the following example. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>net use g: \\192.168.0.2\c The command completed successfully. ** note this command is run from a DOS box, the old PC is 192.168.0.2, the C drive on the old PC is shared as C, and the password is the same on both You could also connect the two PCs together with an ethernet cross over cable. You could probably pich one up at a computer store fairly cheaply. 2. An external USB hard drive. This is a good thing to have anyway to back up your hard drive. Hard drives do tend to die when it is most inconvenient. Pricing is probably around $80 for 150GB+ drive which connects vis USB. 3. Take the hard drive on the old PC and place it in the new PC. You will probably need to set a jumper on the old drive to slave. Don't do this if you are not comfortable poking around in a PC!!! Hope this helps and is not too confusing. -----Original Message----- From: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com [mailto:OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of Geordie Calvert Sent: Monday, December 25, 2006 3:51 PM To: Ramblings (OBC) Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] need some computer advice Hi all - Barb blew me away this morning with a new computer - looks like it's gonna be super quick and user friendly. I think the easiest way would to use a cloning program, like Ghost which comes with Norton Utilities. It copies everything keeping the file locations. It also knows the new computer will have a bigger hard drive and allows for that. If you have Ethernet on both, I would use a crossover cable to move data. For $10 it moves data a lot faster than USB. Might be tougher than Bob's idea but it will work as well. A few weeks ago there was some discussion about the appropriateness of other sports on OBCers wantlists. Based upon my E- mail address of MikeSPORTSfan I think it is clear where I stand on teh issue. All sports are great to me. I have attnded womens sporting matches, Softball, (NCAA Champion Michigan), WNBA (Again chamionship the Detroit Shock), Women's FB (Detroit Demolition (another championship team), Lacrosse (years ago there was a professional league with a team in Detroit), Soccer, etc. Along those lines, this week includes going to the Motor City Bowl (with OBCer Mark Talbot), a "lecture" at a library about the Hot Stove league presented by former MLB player Tom Paciorek, and then this weekend, there is a Gibraltar card show, with free autographs by my HOMer Willie Horton on Sunday. If all goes well, I will go from there to a local card shop that is having a year end clearance sale. Anyone need supplies? I think they are 40 - 50% off regular price. 100 ct box of sheets are normally $15 there, so figure $9 + postage. Then onto Joe Louis Arena for the GLI. The Great Lakes Invitational is the oldest midseason college hockey tournament in the country. A doubleheader with the 3rd place game followed by the championship So if all goes well, FB game, a BB lecture and a hockey doubleheader with a card show and a stop at a card shop all in the same week. I am typing this while watching the Pistons rally ing to beat the Knicks in OT. As for collecting all sports, hockey cards have been PROVEN to be OBC type cards, especially the goalies. As my buddy Rocky notes, all goalie cards should have CREASES! Meanwhile, I would like to remind everyone that we try and have OBC chats on Sunday and Tuesday nites, starting around 8:00 est. To join in, send your AIM to the ramblings server (or to Rob G., Grant and myself individually) and we will add you to our lists and invite you to join the chats when they get started. I doubt there will be a New Years Eve chat, so figure Jan. 2 New Years resolution to join us. If you do not know how to register for an AIM, ask (just do not ask me. I am lucky to keep my shoes tied and to find the on button for my computer). New members may especially want to check this out, as it is not uncommon to have waiver offerings during the chats. For those in FOOT land. Remember the Hot Stove league chats if interested. The next Redford show is Sunday, January 14. I am also hoping to go to Toronto Friday nite January 5 for the First International Bowl (College FB Western Michigan vs. Cincinati) on Saturday Jan. 6 at noon. If anyone can join me (Carlos? someone from western NY, a Bearcat fan, etc.), I would appreciate it. I am hoping to go to a couple fo card shops while there. I am looking through some old records--I was lucky enough to join OBC in September 2002. It appears, at that point in time, I still needed approximately 1300 cards from 1958-1975. My numbers did not even take into account the rest of the Topps run from 1951-1957 (so we can probably add at least another 1300 cards). So I guess I needed about 2600 cards or there abouts. The count is presently at 462. This group continues to amaze me. But the list is getting harder to hit and between some impossible high numbers and expensive stars there aren't all that many possibilties. I don't expect to make much of an inroad into the balance this year. I am hoping that I might be able to knock off maybe 50 more cards from the Topps run in 2007. I have also made some progress on the early Bowman sets--which would have never happened without OBC. But where I plan on spending some focus this year is on the favorite sets of my youth--the early 1960s Post and Jello sets. Here are the particulars-- Finish the 1961 base set--all I need is Chuck Estrada, and begin to find some of those pesky company variations 1962 Jello--a tough set. Hoping to knock 30 or so cards off my wantlist 1962 Post-US--complete with all variations 1962 Post Canadian--Hoping to knock 20 or so from the 61 I still need. 1963--finish a base set and dramatically cut into the 63 Jello set. I need four for a master set, 32 Posts and a lot of Jellos (140). I also hope to make a little progress on some of the oddball regionals that I favor--Bell Brands, Lake to Lakes, and although not a regional--the 1962 Green Tint Manic set. I only need four more of those cursed color variations. What a great hobby and what an incredible group. My best wishes for a prosperous, safe and Happy New Year and all of 2007. I would love > find some of the 66 & 67 high numbers that have been on my list for years. > Would you recommend the national if you only attended one show a year? The simple answer to your question is: If I could only attend one show this year, the National would be it - that's a no brainer. If the biggest show you've been to was the Myrtle Beach Hampton Inn, then be prepared to be overwhelmed. My first National experience was something like this: I spend a minutes at each table just checking out what each dealer has and maybe writing the best locations and any notable cards (of course, I take advantage of any can't miss deals). Since I don't collect memorabilia, new stuff, or slabbed cards, most of those tables are skipped without any looking. After a coupleDAYS of browsing, then I've covered the whole floor and can go back to the best tables! Over the last few years and with the help of other OBC show going experts, we've fine tuned a system using cell phones, wantlists, a dozen extra of eyes and one funny looking hat that speeds up this process. I'll go intoa lot more detail as the National approaches. Regarding the swap session: You bring whatever will fit into your bag, but save some room becuase you usually bring home more than you came with. The trades are usually not prearranged... in fact, the beauty of this group is almost nothing about the entire week is planned in advance ;-) Can you findprices better than eBay? Well, you can find just about anything you're looking forat the National. If it's common cards, there's usually one or two dealers with cards in your price range. However, the dealers are paying hundreds to set up at the show, so lots of them leave their commons and lower grade stuff at home. If you dig around though, those 66 and 67 highs might show up... plus we usually send out a list of where the OBC friendly dealers are. If you don'thave ANY dupes to bring to the swap, there's a 100,000 sq. ft. expo center loaded with cards where you'll be able to buy up as many as you'd like for the 4 days prior to the swap (not recommended). The swap itself is actually a mini show itself, only the dealers (that's us) set up their tables and then everyone gets to fill their wantlists for free. We've also accidentally come up witha few games like "card pelting" and trying for leaners on someone's OBC cap over the years too. The OBC chats are usually hosted by Mike Rich (who just sent out a little more info on the subject) or Grant... or sometimes whoever happens to be online. You can get together with everyone by visiting (aim.com) and downloading the appropriate software. There's support for Windows, Mac and Linux users and best of all - it's free for the taking. Just let everyone know what your screen name is, so we can add you to our lists. I hope I covered everything. Rememeber, always feel free to ask me anything. Most likely I won't have any what you're talking about and/or you'll get a long babbling e-mail you'll want delete after the first few sentences, but it can't hurt to ask ;-) TAYL, Ken M ================= Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2006 17:51:24 EST To: OBC-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Subject: 2006 Review, 2007 Goals Hi gang, Well, another year is drawing to a close. Geno and Bama's notes inspired me to take a look back at 2006. It was a very good year in cardboard for me, I got to cross off around two dozen lines from my list and got really close on a couple others. Completed sets (w/approx. # needed on 1/1/06): 1970 Rold Gold(8), 1970 Kellogg's(1), 1975 Kellogg's(1), 1978 Kellogg's(2), 1948-49 Leaf(4), 1953 Red Man(4), 1954 Red Man(2), 1955 Red Man(12), 1960 Fleer FB(all), 1962 Fleer FB(all), 1965 Philadelphia FB(all), 1967 Philadelphia FB(all), 1956 Topps FB(2), 1958 Topps FB(all), 1963 Topps FB(all), 1965 Topps FB(2), 1966 Topps FB(all), 1912 Hassan Lighthouse(1). Other notable deletions from the list include: 1950 Bowman with =A9(2), 1968 Topps variations (1-THANKS BROCK!!), 1973 Topps blue team checklist variations(6) I also knocked off about two dozen Polar Bear backs from my T205 list and got the base set down to just Joss and three super tough variations. I only found one of the three 1961 Post Cereal cards I needed, but scored 10 out of 13 from the '63 set leaving only Yaz, Adair and Aspromonte. I had just started13 new football sets at the beginning of the year. By year's end, 7 of those were done with 3 more needing a total of 13 cards. Naturally, OBC was instrumental in knocking off many of the numbers from my home page through a couple trades and many random acts of kindness. THANK YOU ALL FOR A GREAT YEAR!! As far as my goals for 2007, it's the same as it's always been: I'd like to get every card left on my list. Oh, do you mean realistic goals? Well, I've always tried to aim low. That way I'll never end up disappointed. I hardly ever go to a show looking for a particular card. Usually, the card finds you, the other way around. Often times, I walk out of there with something that I never expected to find or buy. I have a frequent habit of buying something I need, only to see it three times in the next week on eBay or at the next show for less money - and in nicer shape than the one I settled for. The probability of this happening increases exponentially the longer I've been looking for it. So I don't look. Therefore, my goal for 2007 is this: I plan to get a card someone desperately needs - I don't know what the card is or who is going to need it yet, but I'm going to send it to them out of the blue and totally make their day/week/month/whatever. If I can do this once, then I'll be happy. If somehow manage to do this a few dozen times, well.... I guess a lot of people will be happy. I'm looking forward to trying anyway. Happy New Year everyone. Ken M ================= Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2006 14:28:40 -0500 To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: "Steve Rittenberg" Subject: Baseball is the best!! Speakers included the former President of the Detroit Sports broadcasters Association, Raymond Rolak; Fred Bowenwho won on an amateur National Championship team in the late 50s and got aday at the HOF with Ty Cobb, etc. and the featured speaker was Tom Paciorek, who grew up in the Detroit area. The first 2 speakers occassionaly said something of interest, but I was there for Tom. Unfortunately, as soon as you walked into the library was a sign about the program that said, "no spitting; no pepper; no autographs." Bowen, told some stories including how he met Ty Cobb at the HOF the year before Cobb died. He also mentioned others he met that weekend, including the original Frank Thomas. Paciorek regaled us with a bunch of stories, including how he played BB, because he had no desire to work at a car factory with his dad. His rookie manager was Tom Lasorda whom he credits with giving him the drive to make it to the big leagues. He some very UNflattering things to say about Tony LaRussa (he once told him he could not manage a fruit stand). Also a dislike for Ken "Hawk" Harrelson. Mentioned Hawk was tossed out of his country club for religious reasons. "They refused to recognize him as G-d". There were other great lines. During the Q & A, he was asked who the toughest pitchers were, best players, most underrated, etc. type questions. He mentioned JR Richard as the hardest thrower in the history of BB. Also mentioned the best pitcher of the 70s was probably Bert Blyleven. He said Bert once threw him a pitch that started out behind his head so he ducked and then the pitch broke all the way to go over the plate for a strike. He figured he was going to be hit in the back of the head and instead struck out. A number of other great stories. He thanked me for pointing out that he probably holds the MLB record for most hits in a game by a player that did not start the game. He pinch hit for Ron Kittle in the 4th inning of a game that went 26 innings and he got 5 hits. Tom Seaver got the win in relief in the 26th inning. He also mentioned some colorful characters of teh game and included Norm Cash on that list. They also introduced a few other people in the audience and unbeknownst to me, former Minnesota twin pitcher Bill Zepp lives down the street from the library and was there. I spoke to him after the program and had him autograph my pamphlet about the program. His wife was really impressed that someone wanted her husband's autograph. I was able to sneak in, as the librarians were throwing us out and got 2 cards autographed by Paciorek. I was the last and 1 of only 2 or 3 people that got his autograph as far as I could tell. There are 2 more "sessions" planned, but Paciorek will not be there. Zepp's wife indicated he will most likely be there so if anyone has a 1971 Topps or OPC #271, I would appreciate it to try and get some A Bowl game on Tuesday, meeting a couple of former MLB players on Thursday and hopefully the GLI hockey tournament tomorrow. Not a bad way to finish the year. I had planned on going to a card show where my HOMer Wllie Horton was signing free autographs, then a card shop that was running a year end sale followed by going to the GLI Hockey Tournament double header. I got a bit of a late stat and by the time I got to the show, the line for the Horton autographs was already cut off. No Willie auto's this time around. Instead of leaving and going to the card shop, I decided to check out the show. Glad I did, although my wallet is not. A dealer had bought a collection of prewar cards and was looking to flip them as a group. 103 prewar cards. 1933, 1934, 1935 & 1936 Goudeys, 1934-6 batter- Ups, 1934-36 Diamond Stars, 1940 Playballs & 1941 Double Plays. No Ruth's, Genrig's, Williams, etc., but some minor stars and a few high numbers. A number are in OBC condition and some are not bad. After looking at the stack for 2 hours and calculating what I thought were prices I would be willing to pay by card group, it worked out to almost exactly the asking price. So I agreed to take them, but I did not have the money with me. The dealer knows me and sets up at the local every Wednesday show and pulled them off the table to hold for me until then. So on Wednesday I will be picking up the stack. I only need 35 for my collection which means I will have 68 dupes that I would love others to go in with me on. Virtually all will be 5 - 20% of high book. 1933-34 & 36 Goudeys and Batter-Ups are the 5 - 10%. Diamond Stars and 35 Goudey around 15% and 1940 Playball and 1941 Double Play 20%. Alternatively, anyone that has some prewar that would like to swap, would be appreciated. I did not write the numbers down, so I will not have those until Wednesday nite. I am planning on a trip to Toronto this weekend, so I may not reply before early next week. Mike Rich
