At the end of May this year I placed an eBay bid on a T-205 Fred Payne card (Item #8813691139). I had been doing a search for Hassan cards and this one popped up. The opening bid was $0.99 so I thought what the heck, put a quick bid in and when on to the next item in my search. A few days later I looked at the lot a bit closer and realized that the seller wanted $29 to ship a single card. Well you can only imagine my displeasure and now it was too late to retract my bid so I emailed the seller and told him to cancel my bid. He either refused to do so or simply ignored my request as the auction ended and I was the winning bidder at $0.99. Well, finally the seller emails me with my bill for $30. I attempted 4-5 emails and he never replied. The item description did not indicate that he would not accept SASE's so I after a few days of having my emails ignored I sent him $2 ($1 ex tra for handling and eBay fees) and a SASE and sent it delivery confirmation. About a week after the close of the auction I had tracked that the U.S.P.S. had in fact delivered my payment to seller "goatballsred" and patiently awaited my purchase. Weeks past, no item so I began emailing again - all emails were ignored. Finally, I got communication from "goatballsred" - he left negative feedback stating "never paid - sorry e'bayer" (my first and only strike in over 6 yrs in the community). Of course I had proof that the statement was untrue, I left a reply and countered with negative feedback of my own and contacted eBay. Well over the months ebay has done little to remove the unwarranted strike from my account but they have informed me that they have in place a process to report sellers who are charging exorbitant shipping and handling charges. Which brings me the the point of this Ramble. "Goatballsred" is at it again and is trying to dupe someone like myself into his scam. He has 2 lots in particular that are simply outrageous. Check out Lots # 150040894109 and 150039777074, they are a Walter Payton RC that the seller wants $79 to ship and a `71 Mean Joe Green with a $19 shipping tag. It's driving me crazy that this guy just doesn't list the Payton card at $80 if that is what he wants for it. Something has to be done to STOP THIS!!! I would like anyone who is inclined to assist me to report these auctions to ebay. Perhaps with strength of numbers we can force the hand at eBay to actually inforce their new policy. If you want to report this go to this page: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-shipping.html Go to the bottom of the page and click on "Report listing violations or problems with another eBay member." After you do this you will be prompted to enter your password and a dialogue box will appear where you cut and paste the following lot numbers - 150040894109, 150039777074. That's all there is to it. I just feel that doing something pro-active about some of these "shady eBay sellers" is better than doing nothing at all which is how I feel when we leave it to eBay to police there own. I will commit to help anyone else who wants to report other sellers who have a consistent policy of excessive S&H charges, simply sent me the Lot #'s and I will follow through on it. They'd only charge him based on the 99 cent winning bid, not the $80 tag the buyer pays - clearly against eBay policy. I did file a report about the excessive shipping on the cards... and for good measure, I also reported six other lots he's selling that he's charging $14 each to ship. (I don't think ten movies weigh all that much, unless maybe if they're on the original celluloid reels). The funniest oneI though was a lot he had advertised with 'Free shipping' in the title and the shipping cost in the next column was $1. Huh? I probably should've reported that one too, but I figured eBay might get the hint with the first eight. Hello All, I want to thank all who took the time to report "Goatsballred" to eBay, they have officially removed both of the listings that I reported to you. Last night after my post I searched this sellers past listings and you might be interested to note that he has repeatedly re-listed these items each time lowering the minimum bid and raising the S&H cost. At one time he listed the Payton card for $125 and the Greene card at $30 with "reasonable" S&H charges - This guy knows what he is doing. He has also sold the item I won and he never sent to me, check out Lot #150031911554. I don't know what I need to do to prove to eBay that this crook stole my $$$ and never sent the merchandise. They don't make it easy to lodge a complaint, much less removed unwarranted negative feed back postings. Has anyone else ever run into this "buzzsaw"? At any rate, I relish in the small victories and appreciate the assistance getting eBay to remove these items so no one else gets burned. To all BE WELL!!! Col. Geno Wagner. Speaking of the fly-boy, a couple of weeks ago he pointed out that the checklisting facility in our fancy whiz-bang Automatic Wantlist Generator tool on the OBC website was incomplete, in that it didn't list some variations or errors in the T206 set. So I went looking for checklists, and I came across... checklists. Lots of 'em, at www.strictlychecklists.com. An unbelievable number of checklists. More checklists than you can shake a stick at. With one of their checklist pages loaded in my Firefox browser (many people also use Internet Explorer), I picked an option to view the HTML source code of the web page (that's the technical programming stuff in web pages which makes them look the way they do in your browser). I wanted to look at the way they link a card in a checklist directly to an eBay search query. And I found something in the source code that made my jaw drop - there was a tag with a value of "Public Domain" for the Document Rights. Again, my jaw dropped, as this website seems to have a tremendous amount of data, some of which is very valuable to us - all of it freely available and usable. To give you an idea, our OBC "Checklist Central" has about 250 vintage (1980 and earlier) set checklists. www.strictlychecklists.com looks like they have close to 1,400 vintage set checklists. No kidding! If this information is truly in the public domain, as the web page programming says it is, it's fair game for anyone to use in any way they see fit - much like the sellers on eBay hawking CD's containing the beautiful vintage baseball card images on the Library of Congress website, which are also public domain. I wrote a "quick and dirty" program to locate and download all the checklist data for all sets 1990 and earlier (to prepare for the day when we declare "vintage" as being pre-1990 instead of pre-1980) to my home workstation. It amounted to 1,923 different sets and about 181,000 distinct checklist records. I was only slightly dismayed to find that about 5% of the data is either wrong, poorly formatted, or garbled. So I spent about a week reformatting and correcting almost 10,000 records, mostly by using a computer program, but a lot were corrected by hand. The end result is a fairly overwhelming database of vintage checklists on my home computer, which would be easily portable to the OBC website. My question, I suppose, is whether we should go ahead and include this data in our "Checklist Central" area of our OBC website, based on the explicit classification of "Public Domain" in the source code. I haven't found a contact link for www.StrictlyChecklists.com or www.StrictlyListings.com (which offers free services to sellers and buyers on eBay) but to be truthful, I haven't actually looked that hard. Any opinions on the ethical-ness of this idea? It would be a great resource and educational tool, but would really have some utility here with our "Automated Wantlist Generator" as virtually any vintage card can be included on want lists using the checklist tool. We could also have a clickable button for people (OBC members only) to correct any obvious or subtle errors which I may have overlooked - there is probably still a lot of what we DBA's call "data cleansing" to do. For you UV addicts, the download program I wrote could be modified to go get the remaining 1.2 million checklist records making up probably tens of thousands of sets since 1990. (That should be a "wake-up" call that maybe baseball cards have been overproduced since then.) It would probably take up about a hundred megabytes on our website but we have puh-lenty of space available. The authors of that website must be even more obsessive/compulsive than me, which is saying a lot. I won't try to hand-correct many of the errors, but the program will take care of most of them. This... could... be... huge. The reason we'd like to have the data on our website instead of just looking at www.strictlychecklists.com is that we could tie them into our "want" and "dupes" lists, to quickly match up people wanting cards with people having the same cards to give out. We'd also give them extremely proper credit, including a direct link to their website if appropriate. Again, big-time congratulations to Geno. I'd salute, if it wasn't totally inappropriate and ridiculous-looking for the ignorant, out-of-shape civilian that I am. Much respect, brother. You can take a look at them by going to the OBC web site, clicking on 'The Library" button on the left side menu, then clicking on the link to "Checklist Central." The new link for Mega Checklists will be the first link at the top of the page. I've started with a preliminary checklist format of three columns with the little check-boxes between the numbers and the card descriptions. A "printer-friendly" version is also available, similar to the current version we have, and this can be used for easy copying-and-pasting. If the navigation path I described is too confusing, just click on this link to check it out: http://www.oldbaseball.com/MegaChecklists/ChecklistsAll.php That should get you to the page, it worked for me. Coming up in the next day or so: 1) I'll put a link on every checklist page to allow people to correct any obvious errors found, and also to add new sets to the checklist table in the database. Most of the information is correct, but there are quite a few typos and other formatting problems which I might have 2) Some of the very high-ranking military officials in our group want to add all sorts of card back variations to the T202 set, while it might be the case that the enlisted men may not need all that advanced technical information. Any ideas on how we can resolve that issue? 3) When I set it up for people to make corrections, I'll want to restrict that to OBC members who will need to log in with their passwords (forgotten passwords can be easily e-mailed to the forgetful members). That way we can disallow outsiders from getting in and "hacking" (maliciously, or accidentally) all the data that is loaded. 4) I'll have a go at loading the 1991-2006 checklist data for the UV nuts out there. Even if the W/L update is just to fix the date (i.e. List updated as of 9/15/06), it lets the rest of the group know that they can potentially help out if they want to send that person some cards, vs. just hoping that someone hasn't gotten 6 52T Cliff Mapes cards since 11/05 when their list was last updated, and that your Cliff would be the 7th (although a stack of 52T dupes isn't always a bad thing...) The question following this is what interval is reasonable? We used to (and may still) have a monthly timeframe to post updates to the W/L server based upon one's last name. I have not historically been really good about monthly posts, but I'm usually pretty good about updating my OBC page and fixing the date, regardless of the inbound card flow. Hello all, Yesterday, I took my son to the Mets Dodgers NLDS game 1. This is how it broke down. 2 weeks ago I asked my son what he wanted for his birthday, nothing major came to his mind so we waited to see if anything would pop into his mind. In the mean while I took him to the Mets home Clincher. The very next day my son asked me if I could take him to a playoff game for his birthday, so of course I take him. Here is where the story begins. We wake up at 9 AM and get the car and cooler ready. We leave early so we don't have to sit in traffic all day. We get to Shea Stadium at noon. We set up out little Tailgate party. We BBQ hot dogs hamburgers and sausage. We pick at chips and cheese doodles. We put down a couple cold Pepsis. We started talking about the big game He is so excited. I am already having the time of my life sitting and talking sports with my oldest son. God now I know how my father must have felt. Now its 3 PM and we head inside for the game. We get to our seats and we are sitting dam near the last seat in the house these seats are pretty bad. No I use to work for Shea stadium EMS so I go to see if any of my friends are still working there, and of course they are. So one of my buddies get us seats on the field level in right field so it was amazing. I am sitting here watching my son get so into this game. Every time a met go on base or scored the excitement in his face was just unbelievable. As the game progresses he is understanding the game and the concept of the playoffs and I love every minute of it. So now its the 9th inning and Billy Wagner comes in and closes the door for the Mets win. My son was going crazy (as was I and 55k fans). OK now we are outside and we brought a few balls to try and get some autographs after the game to have fun and kill some time rather than sit in traffic for 2 hours. we are outside the stadium and my Robbie get Ed Kranpools autograph and he was so happy. I think they are only partially accurate though and I am somewhat disappointed with the catalog. I had been using a combination of 2003 standard catalog and 2005 big buckett to determine bid or purchase prices for all the oddball topps I collect, which was working well until earlier this year. In the last 6 months, winning most of the scarcer topps items like 69 team posters or 71 greatest moments seem to require double what I would have thought to bid. But some other listings in the catalog are off the other way. I will buy $20 NM 69 topps super commons all day long at that price; that's really more the EX price for those. Conversely, the '07 catalog has cardboard 73 topps action emblem cards at $160 apiece for commons but I doubt I paid more than four or five dollars apiece for mine not too long ago. There is no way they are worth ten times market rate. I would love to trade three or four of them for a type card of topps 51 current all stars if anyone is interested........Bizarre pricing to say the But some of the remaining biggies on my type card list (67 standups, 70 cloth stickers) are getting well into the four figure range for Ex-ish commons , which is w-a-a-a-y beyond what I would spend on a single piece of cardboard with my kid's college plans still not fully funded! And the Tobacco and Caramel listings are even more scary! The other thing I have noticed is that more off condition 60's and 70's stuff is being graded, which drives up prices on cards that are not condition scarcities. I think we are entering a period where tobacco and especially caramel cards are being speculated upon, mid war stuff like 33 goudey is approaching where tobacco was priced at five to ten years ago and even to some extent 52 53 54 era topps cards are starting to get a bit crazy. There seems to be a sharp line between 1954 and 1955 topps in terms of availability of cards when I am at shows but the standard catalog has both 54 and 55 topps commons at twenty bucks apiece in NM, which i think is incorrect as 55's are pretty easy to find compared to 54's, especially with that full bleed top border on the 54's. I mean, how can a NM 54 topps common be similarly priced to a 55 when the 54 is much more condition sensitive?! Sixties cards are exploding in popularity to boot, so it is going to be much harder for us all in the future to collect a wide range of things without deeper pockets. Most collectors will probably narrow their focus and some sets which were once attainable will only be pursued by the wall street crowd, etc. (No offense if you work in financial services-just making a point). This is unfortunate and a little I really do believe we should develop our own OBC price guide, maybe in conjunction with the checklists recently posted. We could have EX, VG and Tipton columns and finally get a truer idea of what this stuff should go for. We have 100+ people actively pursuing cards, certainly a large enough sample to work with. I'm not talking about a card by card listing, just accurate pricing for commons/team cards/leaders/etc and the bigger stars and superstars. I wonder if there is some wikipedia-like way to have us all enter pricing information as we buy and trade cards throughout the year. Well, that was a ramble, huh? And some food for thought. ================= Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2006 11:07:29 -0700 (PDT) To: dsh46@aol.com From: Matthew Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: 2007 Standard Catalog Hi Dave, Always liked the idea of pricing cards out the OBC way and sounds like we hit the same pricing pattern, especially using the "older" SCDs (mine's from2004). Might be a matter of transaction tracking, right? Make a member section for recording what you recently paid for cards (single or lot) and over time let it average out to those "common," "star," "Dodger/Yankee," and other designations for our usual grades. Baseball has truly lost a legend, a trailblazer, and a genuinely nice man. I had the extreme good fortune to meet Buck a few years ago. At the time he was over 90 years old, but had the energy & enthusiasm of a man half his age. While many will remember him from Ken Burns' "Baseball" series, I will always carry a few distinct personal memories of the man. He was nice enough to shake my hand, talk with me for few moments, & pose for pictures; when I introduced my wife, she held out her hand, & Buck gave her a playful scowl for a second, held open his arms, and said "Gimme a hug!" Then, when he was introduced to speak, the man RAN up and onto the stage - and I'm here to tell you, this was not a stereotypical 90+ year-old-man run; he still had the wheels of a younger man. The speech he gave was entertaining and inspiring. He shared many of his now-famous (and not so famous) stories of life with the Kansas City Monarchs, his general experiences in the Negro Leagues & his friendship with Satchell Paige. He even had us singing along with him at one point. Afterword, I again had a chance for another picture with him, as he autographed a replica KC Monarch ball for me, plus a copy of his autobiography, "I Was Right On Time" - a book I highly recommend for everyone who loves baseball - a description of everyone in this fine group. John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil was a player & manager of the Monarchs, was responsible for the signing of Ernie Banks & Joe Carter for the Cubs, and was the very first African American coach in the major leagues. He worked tirelessly to promote the history of the Negro Leagues through his work with the Negro League museum in Kansas City, and made many of us (myself included) who were ignorant of the rich Negro League history more aware & appreciative of those fine men who struggled to play a game they loved. The world is a much sadder place - at least for me - without him. Buck, you were loved - and you will be missed. May you rest in peace. Anyway, the book was entitled "Psychology and Human Behavior". I'm used to finding half eaten food, cases of overstock and a few odd things that are past their expiration date on the racks where I keep my supply box, but a forgotten text book is unusual. I flipped through the pages kinda quickly and got hung up on one that had some loose pages of notes inserted. They were related to the chapter in the book, but the topic he was currently studying made me laugh. I finished my shift and punched out, but before I left, I scribbled a quick note of my own and inserted it in with the other notes about the chapter he was reading. My note said, "I think you should pay extra attention to this chapter." The title of the chapter: Memory. I couldn't find the PSA standards, which they supposedly have on their website, but it must be under some secret link. did find a couple other vintage sellers who described with some detail the guidelines they use for determining each grade. Basically, a card still qualifies as excellent as long as it isn't miscut from what I gathered. One seller had centering of 95/5 or better on one side (although they showed a picture of one they graded as excellent that looked like the Cobb card from your auction) and another seller stated only that the entire picture had to be on the face the card. I'm assuming they both took these from the PSA standards, which I'd bet are conveniently printed in the SMR they put out and I wouldn't subscribe to if you paid me. It's possible that your Cobb card was submitted a couple times until it didn't come back as Ex/Mt (OC) too. You shouldn't buy that card anyway. No need to risk cutting your fingers on any of the corners. I'm sure nice soft cornered one will turn up eventually. I know that the Phillies did this in 1993 for 7000 tickets. My wife and I both sent in (no email back then--real letters) and the Philly papers reported they received over 500,000 requests (and remember--no email, each was a mailed envelope with a stamp). My wife's name was actually pulled and we went to game 4 (the infamous 15-14 game)! I have to imagine that with email, and the fact that it is NY, the number of requests would be several million, so 10,000 is not very many. As for the number made available, if the Mets are like most teams, they also allow all partial season ticket holders to buy playoff tickets (won't be your normal seat, but will be a seat somewhere). They are also required to keep quite a few tickets fo "MLB". I believe almost every player in MLB has a right to purchase a set number of seats--is this fair, I won't say, but it does eat into the tickets. As far as the celebrity fans--they have unlimited funds, so even if they don't have a contact on the team for one of their tickets, they can always find someone willing to sell their ticket for a few thousand (pocket change to them). Like I said, I don't like the way the system works, leave me out almost all the time, but I really dont' think the Mets lottery was a scam. As a matter of fact, I enetered it, hoping the Phillies would be playing them in the NLCS. ----- Original Message ----- From: "geno.wagner" Date: Sunday, October 15, 2006 2:23 am Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] biggest scam ever To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com, DaPatriot1@aol.com > Rob -- > I remeber a similar thing when the Cubs made the playoffs a couple > years back. Even though I’m technically an active member, I guess I’m one of those members who is in the middle of a collecting “off season” which has been going on for sometime now. At one point last year I did send a note to the AC requesting inactive status, but never got a response so I kinda dropped the whole idea after I figured out that I’m probably not the only one in an “off season” situation. Even though it has been far too long since I sat down and tried to hit a wantlist, I still feel like a part of OBC. I still follow the Ramblings digest every day to try and keep up with the flavor of the group. In my house I am fortunate enough to have a room of my own where I can pursue my hobbies; my wife calls it my “man cave.” That is an apt description at the moment because it does look like a very messy cave. Currently there is too much stuff in there for any semblance of order to exist. The bookshelves have overflowed, piles of comics everywhere, boxes have piled up, the guitars are in the way of everything, and there is only the perverbial narrow path through the clutter. Basically, it has just become a storage room for all my junk. And luck would have it, the baseball card collection at the bottom layer of all this junk. The last time I was organizing my cards I managed to knock over both the dupes box and the box of cards that needed to go into binders at the same time, resulting in some commingling of those cards. Last winter I did go though and clean up a few sets and I did update my wantlists for those sets. I know I’ve gotten a couple of envelopes of cards over the last year. I know I sent out a thank you for one, but not the other. I apologize for that rudeness on my part. Beyond that my collection is just sitting there waiting to be reorganized and updated. I’ve been up in the room recently trying to figure out a new floor plan, and mainly trying to figure out which things need to go and which things need to stay. I’ve decided that one of the collections that needs to be purged is the baseball book collection. I’ve got more of them than I will ever need or ever read. I went baseball book crazy at the local friends of the library sales a few times over the years. Bookshelf space is a premium because I’ve focused quite a lot on my comic collection over the last few years. I focus on collected editions, so these things need to be on a bookshelf and not in a comics longbox. I also have issues that I want to keep bound into books, so those need bookshelf space too. In the slight chance that anyone is interested in seeing said books (if there are any booklover out there), here is a link: http://home.att.net/~david.skoglund/binding.html Right now, most of my baseball books are in boxes. I was going to just donate them to the Goodwill or something, but now that this book club idea has come up I’ll be offering them up to the group. What you guys don’t want, I’ll give to the Goodwill. Hopefully sometime in the next couple of months I’ll be posting a list of books that I have available. When I got back into baseball cards about 10 years ago, I was a bargain table wax box junkie for awhile. So, I’ve got way too many cards of recent vintage that I don’t want anymore that are just taking up space. I want to refocus my collection on vintage sets. (If anyone needs a 5000 count box full of 1987 Topps dupes…… didn’t think so….) Anyway, just thought I’d share my perspective. ================= Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2006 17:00:15 -0400 To: "OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com" From: "Steve Rittenberg" Subject: Best baseball teams ever? I don't think the card would carry a separate ID, even though there appears to be at least a couple out there. It's more like a printing defector ink spot as opposed to something deliberately corrected (other than maybe cleaning the plate before the next print run)... or whatever piece of lint or simply falling off at some point. I'd consider it more of a quality control issue than a variation - - like Topps putting a miscut card in the packs...and we know THAT never happens ;-) Ken M ================= Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2006 00:46:05 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Linda" Subject: Cd of 1964 Baseball Auravision Interviews For those who collect the 1964 Auravision records but can't listen to them because they have no old record player to play them on i found an ebay listing with the records transfered to cd so you can listen to them.check out: ebay # 8804068716 Also this cd by this ebay seller is reasonably priced too- Linda ================= Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2006 02:17:46 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "b_betza" Subject: Anyone know anything about 60's minor league Pepsi cards? These cards are just too cool. So they've been added to my wantlist :) I was sitting in a restaurant in Rutland, VT this evening with some family and friends. As I was looking out the window I noticed the rain turning to wet snow. It was really pretty, but seems a little early to be seeing snowflakes :) Anyway, after we talked about the early snow the conversation turned to baseball. I was talking to a friend of my Aunt's who I had never met before. Turns out he's a big baseball fan. Had a great conversation with this man. He and I reminisced about the 1968 World Series. I remember my Dad let me stay home from school to watch one of those Tigers/Cardinals games. Ahhh...those were the days :) We talked about Mickey Lolich, Bob Gibson, Denny McLain (hard to imagine anyone winning 31 games, huh?), Lou Brock. That WS will always stick in my mind not just because it was a great series. But it happened at a time in my life when I was just a happy go lucky kid who loved baseball. I was 10 years old. And now...I have a 9 year old daughter. And I just realised that a lot of what she experiences over the next few years will probably have a great deal of inpact on her life. Or...put another way...I guess it wil be her happy go lucky years that she will remember for the rest of her life. At least I hope so :) So...here's what I'm hoping for. A seven game WS. I don't even care who wins (since I'm a Braves fan ;). I just want it to be a close score in each game. And most of all...I hope my daughter will watch a little bit of the WS with me :) Enjoy October! Jerry Coker How low will we go? Check out Yahoo! One for the Phillies (and yes, I own two sets already for my Phillies collection) and one for the Orioles. The Phillies set is a little tougher to find in top condition. Sets can run anywhere between $150-$200...the Orioles tend to go a little cheaper. Not overly hard to find and one of the easier regional Phillies sets to acquire. ================= To: vct-vintagecardtraders.com@lists.vintagecardtraders.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2006 07:44:14 +0000 From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: WS Game 2 Hello All, I got an odd request - Did anybody record last nights World Series Game? Here's is story: Back in 1995, I ran out of money for college and moved in with my parents in Atlanta. During this time, I was working part time at a card shop and one Sunday a lady walks in looking for cards of Craig Skok. I had one in my own private collection which I freely offered to her at no cost. When she returned to pick up the card the following week, I found out that she was Craig's wife and that he was the VP of the Atlanta chapter of the MLB Players Alumni Association. She offered me the chance to work on a committee for a fund-raiser for MDA. I jumped at the chance and worked hard on the committee for 7 months for a two day event that raised $150,000 for MDA. At the time, I was a lost 21-year-old and had no real direction. The opportunity to do what I did helped to change the direction my life was in. Since that time, I completed my undergrad degree and completed my Master's of Social Work degree and now work with Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 1995, I have kept in touch with Craig and his wife and visit them when I see my parents in Georgia. I have attempted to secure as many cards of Craig's as I can and send bulk packages to he and his wife as simply gestures of thanks and to remind them the power that a simple piece of cardboard can have. I'm sure we have a bunch of Craig Skok cards laying around. I've sent him three of them. I found this to be pretty interesting. >From: smartalecx@aol.com >To: KWG0@aol.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com >Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Congrats to the 2006 World Series Champions - >St. Louis C... >Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2006 00:57:36 EDT >In a message dated 10/27/2006 11:55:43 PM Central Standard Time, >kwg0@aol.com writes: >Wow! Sometimes it is hard to determine if a set is complete. I am not talking about the gremlins that strike us all, but what constitutes a complete set (think 1960 Fleer BB is 80 Pepper Martin part of the set, or is it complete at 79 cards?). Then there are certain issues, such as TCMA Renanta Galasso that were issued in 45 card series for 6 years. If I have 5 of the 6 series is that 1 INcomplete set or 5 complete sets? Do I have to have the #66 Williams to consider 1954 Bowman complete or is just having the Piersall sufficient to say the set is done. Traded sets that came out with the 1974 & 1976 Topps BB sets, are they a part of the regular issue, or a separate issue? Personally, I consider a set complete WITHOUT the variations. I consider the sets distinct if they are listed separately in the big annual guides. Although I consider trying to collect a complete dupe set of 1971 Kelloggs BB, 1 with and 1 without the 1970 in the copyright, a challenge, I still consider this all 1 set. According to my definition of 1 is a type card, but 2 and you are collecting them, I am collecting around 500 different vintage sets. Although an "official" count may differ, I think the upcoming swap could put me at 300 different vintage (pre-1981) sets completed. That does not include my fav Coke caps. I have a shopping list for Toronto of 61 cards that would finish 16 different Canadian &/or Hockey sets. Gord has 2 set killers among 23 cards from that list. If I am able to swap for those 23, I will need to shop for 38 more to complete 14 more sets. I am sure this is no surprise, but most are stars & superstars, but not all. I hear guys talking about slimming down their collections and think that is a great idea. It would be nice to concentrate on a few sets and complete them. I just cannot even fathom how I would go about doing that. The advantage of having so many sets to work on is that when I go to a show, I can usually find something I can use. It also allows me to walk away from stuff that is overpriced, as there is plenty I need that I can spend my money on. The down sides include, rarely finishing a set and not knowing what to look for on Ebay. Try looking up 500 sets and you will see what I mean. Plus my memory is not what it once was, so I do not automatically know what I have and need anymore. I guess at this point, I am committed to trying to collect every major league set made in North America of all sports prior to 1980. There I guess that was not so hard. I am no longer trying to collect sets made outside of North America. Now what do I do about my Venezuelan collection??? Maybe I need to "expand" my collection to the Western Hemisphere, although I do have some Japanese issued BB sets also. So to complete a 1975 Topps set, you would have to get everyone to send all their cards to you, then buy every one you see on Ebay, and check under each kid's bed that has gone off to college. That is really the only way to complete it in my mind... On a serious note, I'm one of the guys who has slimmed down his wantlist. Right now mine only has T202s on it, simply because I really like them and want to learn more about how they were distributed. I'll gradually add a few more, but frankly I got tired of seeing Mickey Mantle on every one of myTopps wantlists with no real desire to fork out money for them. It reallycomes down to what you enjoy. I actually see no problem with collecting aset and unloading in trades a couple years later for something else - theyare trading cards after all!
