Just wanted to let you know that I'm posting some 1950 and 51 Bowmans and a few 52 Topps on ebay. Need some cash for other projects here. Some of the cards are fairly decent, others are definitely Tipton condition. These are cards I collected before I joined OBC. Have a good, safe Labor Day weekend, and please pass along any suggestions for how those of us in the northlands can help folks in the disaster region. ================= To: "Ramblings" Date: Sun, 4 Sep 2005 20:05:53 -0400 From: "Steve Rittenberg \(Earthlink\)" Subject: Is there a Boog Powell collector in the group? Thanks. -- Steve ================= Date: Tue, 6 Sep 2005 22:45:15 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Subject: eBay and other ramblings Hi all, One of my friends who I've known since I collected as a kid usually lets me know when he has cards on eBay that he's selling and asks me to pass along the word to you guys when he has an 'OBC special'. This I've actually done a total of ...um, zero times so far. Well, this time he must be kinda miffed at me, because apparently he had to relist a 1953 Topps Whitey Ford that nobody bid on at $1 (+ $1.50 postage). The item # is 5238825095 and his eBay ID is yaz-fan. I also have a relist from the John Ball auction from a nonpaying bidder (who is no longer a registered user), but that card isn't even close to anything we collect around here. It ends in less than 24 hours and no one has even put a penny on it though. My ID is ken_m if you want to look at the card (but put on your sunglasses first). It's been kinda busy around here with the holiday. People tend to buy a lot of food for the end of the summer cookouts, so work has been pretty busy for me. Just when things looked like they would slow down, I get jury duty and land a trial that'll keep me occupied (and away from the store for the most part) for another couple days. When I get back, there'll be a lot of catch up work to do and inventory is coming up soon. One of the better decisions I've made recently is the one to fill up my tank before the price of gas went through the roof. The way it is around here, a full tank of gas is worth more than the rest of my car... which I might have to sell to the station to pay for my next fill up. I wonder if that'll become an option at car sales lots? Hmmm... leather seats, power windows, HEY! A full tank of gas included! My fantasy football draft is tomorrow and like in many previous years, I'm almost completely unprepared. I thought I'd have time to read up while sitting around for jury duty yesterday, but that plan was scrapped when I was impaneled and spent the day becoming familiarized with the trial and our court system. Looks like the trial is expected to last all day tomorrow and possibly into Thursday, which is Opening Night for the NFL season - so I'm going to the Patriots' game that night. At least it isn't a two week affair like the last time I had to serve. In other news, I'm getting the house painted. This is only about 5 or 6 years overdue. Now you'll be able to find my house a lot easier the next time you happen to be in Everett, as it'll probably be the only bright green house in the city. It was blue (or a very faded version of that color) for many years, but I wanted to restore it's original color from when I was a kid. We found a small swatch where the paint had peeled away to match up the color and in a couple weeks the place will look as good as new... at least on the outside. Now if I can get someone to straighten out the boxes and boxes of baseball cards that are inside ;-) That's all for now. Seems like only yesterday, when I was playing with baseball cards and reading comics. Well, actually it was only yesterday that I was playing with baseball cards thanks to Mark Talbot. (See Thanks server for details.) In spite of my semi-retirement status, these past few weeks have kept me busier then a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. At any rate I wish to extend my apologies and intent with the group. First, the apologies for my negligence/procrastination in posting thanks to all who made my trip to the National most enjoyable both by their presence and for the cards that flew my way throughout the weekend. Second my intent is to post those thanks and a belated report sometime over the weekend. I'm also hoping to send out a few envelopes as well. The DS reprints I have seen appear washed out, not vivid on the front and then the word reprint is displayed very small across the bottom under the bio area. Ones that are trying to be passed off as real have that small area with paper loss or scratched out. I have seen them with other spots of artificial wear too, trying even harder to make you think they are legit. Still I would have bid on these cards if they had had no backs and were being sold as "skins". The fronts appear to be legitimate. ------------- Original message follows ------------- I picked up #99 Pie Traynor from the 1934-6 Diamond Star set recently on ebay. The card is unusual. It was described as: "This 1934 ? blue back Diamond Star card of HOF'er Pie Traynor is in overall poor condition. The card front is probably in Vg condition but somewhere or somehow the card front and back became seperated and only three quarters of the back got glued back on." This is about right but the result is that the card is a lot thinner than any other Diamond Stars I have. The front and back look authentic but look as if they were pasted together and the bottom of the back is missing. There were paper versions of the 1941 Playballs. As if that is not enough fun, the backs fo the cards, come with an offer which has 2 different expiration dates (usually March 31 & May 31, but sometimes April 1 & June 1). The later expiration dates are usually the tougher version. Yes I can believe someone would spend $5100 for a 1980 card. If the listing is correct (and it can be checked) the offered card is not 1 of thousandsbut 1 of 7 (PSA Gem Mint 10). There are people out there with way too much money who want the best example of a card they can buy. Notice that the secondary bidder ($5,000) had an eBay rating of 178 based on 595 positive feedbacks (411 from sellers) and zero negatives. I think the $5100 bid is unusual for a card of this ilk, but I doubt it is unprecedented Apparently, the auction ended exactly 24 hours after starting (to the second). Thus it must have been a one-day auction. I fail to understand why the seller would limit himself to such a narrow window. You never know what people are going to bid on eBay. The other day I bid on a 1944 Centennial Flour Seattle Rainiers card that I need to finish a set. The previous 2005 high on eBay for any card from this set was $62. I bid $165 because I thought that was absolutely safe and I really wanted the card (the card I bid on was no more scarce than others in the set). Needless to say, I was outbid . . . And no, I'm not going to bid $5100 next time the 1944 card comes up, even if it is PSA 10. But it would be a better value than the Henderson card . .. -Dave Fallen. ----- Original Message ----- From: geno.wagner To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2005 12:20 PM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] You must be kidding! Washington show last weekend. Started out EARLY Thursday and headed to Chicago-Midway. Got there early and had a filling Mexican meal. Then I flew to BWI and met Steve for a quick tour of Baltimore and Casa Rittenberg. Typical Bacholor pad with cards in most of the rooms. Stayed up late looking at diferent sets and sorting cards. Too much caffine so I got about 4 hours sleep. Friday, we hung out for a while, did lunch at the Tastee Diner and headed west. Got there in time to help a dealer, Greg Fisher, set up in exchange for show passes, then Steve took off shopping and I hung out with the dealer mostly cleaning up boxes and stuff. Found a few from the 65 and 66 sets. and then called it a night and headed for a Chinese Restruant for dinner. Met up with another dealer, Randy, who we ate with and chatted for a hour or so. Then it was time to find the room, and got in about 11. Tried to get net access, never happened, and hit the sack for a good night's rest. Steve took out early while I slept in. I got ready and Steve picked me up at the crack of Noon and headed to the show. Checked in with our dealer friend then headed to lunch to meet up with the OBC'ers. Ken and Steve I knew but 3 more new friends were Ed, Fuge and Rick/Deb of Philly\KC fame. Had a cheesee steak and swapped cards. picked up a couple nice ones. Finished the show and met the gang for pizza. I take it as New York style This but very tasty and filling. More cards flung around and then Ken, Steve and I headed over to long time member Joe Greco. It was very dark and it seemed like drove to the deep woods but I was told they were not far from town. Talked to his 3 kids and met his wife, more talk and card swaps before we left very late (ok it was only 10 pm) but I was beat. Got back to the room, Randy was staying the night also. *I think he was there but he never made a sound :). We got to bed late again and I slept in again. Hit the show hard again then headed Greg tear down. We then headed east and went back to Steve's before meeting up with Vegas friend Mac Wubben. Sat down for coffee, soft yogurt and cards. Hour or so later, back to Steve's for more cards and cartoons, some of which I have never seen before. I stayed up way to late, could not sleep so went back down to relax until Steve got up. Quiet trip to the airport and I headed home. 10 hours later, I make it and am done for a while. Well worth the time and always fun to meet new members. If you made it this far, sorry to bore you. I had fun and thanks to everyone for the cards and welcome. This would save the tax payers about $100,000 as opposed to his likely sentence of 5 years in the pen! I wouldn't do that to all people in his position but that is what I'd do now, considering he was/is not a predator & all the other things that I have heard about him & this "specific" case. He pled guilty which saved thousands of dollars for a trial & also has served many months doing treatment already. He also has lost his job & been embarrassed publicly in the national media plus spent many dollars on attorneys even to this point. How much credit does he get for the 50 years he didn't break the law and paid taxes or the many years he did his job helping kids? Lifetime criminals of which many almost never pay taxes, do drugs then rob & shoot people, don't stay in jail 5 years! Also consider that many prisoners were moved out of the flooded areas so prisons are even more over crowded than before. With the hurricanes causing damage, the gas issue & the war, I'm sure $100,000 can be better spent over the next 5 years. How about getting bullet proof vests for ALL our soldiers in Iraq? How about armor bottomed vehicles for a change? If it is Texas money then how about vests for the Texas State Patrol? How about a much stronger border? I'm sure you guys can also think of some better ways to spend $100,000 than Doug :-) And to all you that say NO WAY...what about 20 years on home arrest & 20 years probation? Isn't that better than $100,000 down the drain with all the problems we already have now? In case anyone wonders, no I have not talked with Doug or his family on the phone ever. We traded a few baseball emails before his house was raided and traded cards only once, about 2 years ago. I sent him his 2005 OBC PTCs he ordered & that is it. I'm not an attorney or social worker, not in law enforcement, never been convicted of anything more than traffic stuff plus a VKO (Violation of Knife Ordinance/ carrying a pocket knife with 3.5" long blade=$70 fine!). Also for the record I have no kids but I love my 6 years old nephew! But I do pay taxes & believe in the 1st Amendment and I stick by my comments above until someone can convince me otherwise Send me your nominations for NL Cy Young, NL MVP, NL ROY, NL Comeback Player, etc & I'll do a poll Friday!
