Is it still working? ================= To: Date: Fri, 1 Jul 2005 23:09:02 -0500 From: "George Vrechek" Subject: Sportsfest Variations Report I attended the SCD Sportfest show last Saturday. I talked with Bob Lemke, Levi Bleam, TS O'Connell, and Roger Neufelt. Bob Lemke said that he had been busy on the 2006 Catalog and had not gottenthrough the website emails. However he was very interested in the findings. We talked about the 1955 Elliott. Within 3 minutes at the show I had found the "no '53" variation which I had assumed would be tough. Bob feels it is a variation in that there is no hint of any of the lettering which would happen if the ink didn't cover. As soon as we concluded that it must be a variation Bob went out and found another Elliott on the floor with the a partial "5" and nothing else. He pointed out the dealer who had it and I promptly added it to my collection. Distinguishing printing differences from variations ain't that easy. Levi Bleam came over to see who was asking for 3rd series 1952 gray backs. He assumed it must be Larry Leonard who has been covering the same ground in detail. Larry, did you get to the show? TS O'Connell is the SCD editor and was encouraging of my efforts to continue SCD articles on Burdick and hobby pioneers. He would like to see something done to honor Lionel Carter. Roger Neufelt (Sp?) always has older stuff at reasonable prices. He was quite familiar with the OBC origins in that Larry Tipton started combing Roger's collection purchases for the well-worn Tipton mint cards many years ago in Oklahoma. Roger still remembers the $9 Ryan rookie he sold Larry. Roger had met Buck Barker but not Burdick and gave me some good background for one of my articles. I was able to knock off the remaining 1968 Yaz checklist variations at the show so that I now have all 4 cards. I found a few 1956 line variations as reported by Larry Leonard to this group. I had no luck on Spezio, Bolin, Shaw, or 1960 Leaf Smith despite looking hard. There are a few dealers out there that I have no trouble buying a RAW Pre-war card from, but I think that if you looked at thesheer amount of cards available raw vs graded in the pre-war market you would come to this conclusion. Subtract the fakes and reprints from the total raw cards also subtract the zero or just low feedback dealers with private ID bidding, and you will find precious few cards to bid on. At least there is a pretty good selection of graded cards to choose from...and while you can always opt to crack the case, you can feel much better about spending your hard-earned. They tend to cost a bit more ( not that muchmore for lower grades...) but maybe they are worth the assurance. Now this is likely to develop some discussion about how "no one needs to tell me what condition this card is in, I've been collecting for 30 years!!!" I don't mean it to be that type of discussion. I've been collecting for 30 years too...but we are talking about bidding in on-line auctions mostly where you don't know the seller and you can't actually see the card ( some scans are better than others...) I think it helps with authenticating whether you are buying some counterfeit or reprint card...and maybe some of those slip by the graders too. Whaddya all think? That said, I have also admitted that when the time comes to add a high $$ card like a 1952 Mantle or something like it to my collection, it will likely be entombed in a PSA1 slab. Since I will likely be purchasing it off of eBay (cause -- except for Father Pat a couple months ago -- there aren't a lot of 52T Mantles available through OBC at any given moment) and there are just too many fake Mantles floating around out there. I have mentioned this shop on the Ramblings server before (as has Larry Tipton) as one of the few great places to buy cards around here. First off...I picked up a T206 Bransfield with Hindu back (my first non-Piedmont/Sweet Caporal back), a 1952 Topps "Puddin' Head" Jones, 50 hits to my '50s/'60s wantlist and six Kellogg's cards from '71-'76. I found some '69 High #s in a 10 cent box (which also had those Kelloggs) and grabbed a bunch of '65 hi #s for 60 cents each. I also got a picture of the 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers on a strip of aluminum (actually, it was supposed to become an Iron City beer can but never got rolled into one). All of that set me back $40. The place is run by a very nice couple from New York. This time, Kathy told me they were closing the store after Labor Day. For good. They decided to move back to New York (Catskill area) and will be continuing their business on eBay. While it's sad to see the one good store in the area close up like that, I understand why they are doing it. At times, I've seen them go as high as $500. The 1968 re-issued set is also out of print, no longer available from the company, so even that will generally go for $200 or so. Some of the early cards, such as the first set from 1960, has sold for $2500. I remember that one - the lady who sold it didn't know what she had. She picked it up for $2 at a garage sale in Colorado. I was the first bidder, though I wasn't going to go crazy for it, since I already had one. However, she emailed me, so I filled her in on it. I couldn't believe it until I did a quick search this morning and found that, according to the story at http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/news/12117930.htm, Fleer will auction off it's name tomorrow. I can't help but feel a little sad, as Fleer was a major confection company and did some real cool nonsport sets starting in 1923, long before Topps was formed. Their roll in challenging Topps' monopoly is one of the most important developments in recent card history, though I know some of you detest the beginning of the UV era when Fleer and Donruss entered the market. It will be interesting to see whether the name is resurrected under new ownership in the future. Regardless, I am pretty sad to see their demise. My wife and I took a little vacation to the "Big Easy" where we were successful in dodging Hurricane Dennis. More importantly, however, this visit represented a key meeting between the "Friar" and the "Padre." Yes, it was the old Friar meeting up with Father Pat in a one-on-one mini-OBC gathering. Actually, my wife kind of gave me an edge here, but that's not what this report is about. There is no way I can exaggerate the hospitality shown to me and my wife by Father Pat. It started on Sunday when he met us after mass at St. Patrick's in downtown New Orleans. Not only did he take us to lunch/brunch, but Father Pat also took us on a wonderful little tour of his great city, highlighted by the old Friar's first walk ever along a Mississippi River levee followed by even more touring throught the city after the walk. Last night we met again and, while we continued to exchange some cardboard and had the chance to check out Father Pat's great collection, the highlight of the evening was dinner at Tony Angelo's in a nearby suburb of the city. All in all, we had an absolutely great time! And for those who have never met the good Father, if you ever have the chance, I can safely predict that you will have a special treat in store. Thank you Father Pat for your wonderful hospitality and generous gift of your very valuable time. I had heard the song a number of times, but couldn't quite catch the title. I also heard it in FEVER PITCH both times I watched the movie. Well anyway, I did get a few people who thought they could help me out in finding the song - Keith Summers was particularly helpful, but we couldn't quite get it. Some thought it might be "Dirty Water," a song often associated with the Sox and with Boston; but, alas, when I heard it again I knew that was not the one I liked, tho I must admit it does have a nice ring. To shorten this already-too-long story, I guess I should have gone more directly to a familiar source. I asked my son Michael; and, sure enough, chip off the old block, he had the answer. "Tessie" is the name of the song, done by a group called "Dropkick Murphy," a name that you just have to associate with Boston. If you haven't heard it, give it a listen and try to imagine Big Papi circling the bases and then planting two big feet on home plate at the end. Believe me, it is a sports song that really fits. Again, thanks to all who helped. I am about to safely load it up from my hard drive to my Ipod. Go Sox! As a follow up to Jim Wiehe's message about Fleer, I offer this piece of Saddled with debt in a dying industry, trading card maker Fleer/SkyBox International LP is scheduled to begin selling its assets July 14. Fleer owes between $30 million and $35 million to about 300 creditors, which include former Major League Baseball players Cal Ripken, Henry Aaron and Ernie Banks and other athletes in the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League. The company reported $3.1 million in assets in a court filing. The company announced July 1 that it had entered into an asset purchase agreement with Carlsbad, Calif.-based Upper Deck Co. LLC as a stalking-horse bidder to buy the intellectual property of Fleer and the assets of Fleer Collectibles LLC for $2 million. The auction is scheduled for today and is subject to court approval. Fleer had rebuffed previous approaches by Upper Deck, turning down a $25 million offer in early 2003 and an offer of $10 million this year. "[Fleer] is a very damaged company, but there is still some value there," said Mike Hulme, general counsel at Upper Deck. He added that Fleer's noncollectibles business inventory is not part of the offer and could be part of a later sale. Fleer petitioned for an assignment for the benefit of creditors, an alternative to Chapter 11, in a New Jersey state court on June 17. An ABC is a contract under which the debtor transfers all of its right, title, interest in, custody and control of its property to a third-party assignee in trust. The assignee liquidates the property and distributes the proceeds to the assignor's creditors. "[Filing] a Chapter 7 takes time and has uncertainty," said Dave Kupetz, partner at the law firm SulmeyerKupetz PC in Los Angeles. "Chapter 11s are done to implement a sale, but depending on the business, it can create a lot of extra administrative expenses and can be a 30-day process. [ABCs] can take out the expense and knock the process down to one day. It may be the best chance Fleer has at salvaging any value," he explained. The Major League Baseball Players Association objected to Fleer's plans on July 8, arguing in court papers that the union had notified the company in May that it was rescinding the company's rights to use its intellectual property. MLBPA's contended that the assignee would sell merchandise that uses MLBPA's intellectual property. Superior Court Judge Ronald Bookbinder ruled July 9 that the company can sell its name, sports licenses and copyrights to pay down debt. But a buyer might still have to deal with the union over costs associated with 30,000 redemption cards, whose worth is estimated at around $450,000. Redemption cards come in normal Fleer card packs but allow fans to redeem the cards for player autographs or other sports memorabilia. In its July 8 filing, the MLBPA said that Fleer "willfully distributed products containing redemption cards at a time when Fleer knew or should have known that it was unlikely to fulfill its redemption obligation." Jim Barrett, analyst at CL King & Associates Inc., said Fleer would likely go to one of the remaining three card players, New York-based Topps Co., Arlington, Texas-based Donruss Playoff LP or Upper Deck. "Clearly, there are only three players left to buy it, unless there's someone out there who really wants it," Barrett said. "There's a chance, however, that no one really wants it." Prospective buyers not already in the business would have to pay Major League Baseball and the MLBPA for the rights to produce the cards, which would be additional costs not faced by the other cardmakers. Outsiders also can't be excited at the sector's prospects. The trading card market has been foundering over the past couple years. Revenue at Topps, the only publicly traded entity of the four, has declined from $439 million in fiscal 2000 to $296 million in fiscal 2005. Barrett believes Topps to be representative of the whole industry. Barrett explained that collectors have become disenchanted and bewildered by the vast number of cards and memorabilia products now available. Ubiquity reduces collectibility. Baseball officials recognize the dynamics, Barrett said. "MLB wants to see the proliferation in cards and memorabilia reduced," he said. "There's so much out there, people are getting confused." The elimination of Fleer won't do much for the surviving competitors, Barrett said. "In a modest way, it's a positive for Topps," he said. "Topps will pick up part of their market share." Porzio, Bromberg & Newman PC in Morristown, N.J., is counsel to Fleer for the ABC. ================= Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2005 14:09:02 -0700 (PDT) To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Daniel P Coen" Subject: Some O-Pee-Chees on SCF There are some O-Pee-Chees, Allstars from 1970 Topps, and a few more for $8 delivered on SCF. What I mean is, I am going to reduce the number of sets I am chasing and concentrate primarily on the oddball Topps stuff, plus some Brooklyn Dodgers and Mets team sets and a few other odds and ends. Some of the regular issue Topps stuff I was working on from (mostly 56-64) will be going into the the dupes box for redistribution to OBC. I haven't decided yet on 55, 65 and 66 (more below on 55 and 65 and some other things). Some of this is time-related and some of it is my desire to collect things that are a little off the beaten path. The time issue is being driven my job, family and a desire to keep learning the guitar, which has become something I really, really like doing, even more so than collecting cards. So I'm going to keep the core of my Topps sets from 67 to 75 and a few Bowman sets I've been working on since I really enjoy those. I plan to add the 71 and 72 basketball sets to my list and possibly the 70 set as well, which I have been meaning to do for a while and possibly some tobacco cards (T206). As for the 55 and (possibly) 65 sets, they are pretty close to completion, minus some big stars and Dodgers (which I'm going to keep from from 1955) and a few commons. If anyone has rough interest in these as part of a trade, let me know as I am leaning toward trading them. I should have a general "l have it"for these sets this week. I have pared down my set lists by about 40% over the last two years. I have a numbers of sets that are in the stage where I need Mantle, Mays, etc. and high numbers. The cards are hard to come by in lots, and are often painfully expensive. My player and type collections, on the other hand, have given me an outlet to continue the cardboard flow on a budget. Interestingly, to me at least,is that for the player collections I have had to create cut off dates because the UV stuff. My Jim Rice collection was under control, about 20-25 from completion, until about 2003. At that point, I could not keep up with all the memorabilia and artifically scare stuff. I cut the list off at the conclusion of his playing days, and now I need only two more - 1978 R/C Cola Iron On and 1982 FBI Disc. Like I said in my last post, I'm just reducing the number of things I collect, not giving it all up. As I also mentioned, I had 3 sets pretty close to completion that I would like to trade as complete "units" for something uncommon or another large grouping. I haven't fully worked up my new list, but I am concentrating on 53 bowman (both flavors) as sets i want to complete. I'm also going to finish the 55 and 56 dodgers team sets plus a few other mainstream things and should have a new list on the server tonite. Anyhoo, I have the following "big units" for trade, all in sheets: 55 Topps-A true OBC set, condition varies from EX to extreme Tipton (the Mays card is like tissue paper, except the corners are not as sharp.....). I think I have 179 cards left; it is missing the Brooklyn Dodger cards, Aaron, Agganis, Williams, Clemente, Berra and 4 commons. Probably G-VG overall, maybe a little better. 65 Topps-Better shape overall than the 55's but still an OBC set. About 500 cards, including 38 nosebleeds. No Mantle, some other stars are in there though, probably not the big ones. I'd say VG overall. 66 Topps-About the same shape as the 65's, also about 500 cards with 25 high numbers extant. Again, no Mantle but some other stars are there but probably no super stars. VG overall, most likely. Any specific questions on what's what in what set, please e-mail me offlist. If nobody is interested in these (as three separate trades, probably) I'll bust 'em up in a week or two. All the other stuff I had from 57-64 (about 1500 cards), will be going in the regular dupes box tonite. I also have complete sets from 76 to 92 for trade, although these are pretty common and may not be worh shipping. The post-80 sets are in pretty good shape, basically taken from packs in year of issue. Any other 80's UV you need, lmk I may have it, especially if its Topps. It was fun looking through these binders again, but it made me realize I hadn't looked at these sets in quite some time except to add new cards. ================= Date: Sun, 17 Jul 2005 20:21:38 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: topgolf@aol.com Subject: Mini OBC gathering While many of the OBCers will be at the national, I will be meeting George Hay in Vail, Colorado for a 100 mile bike ride along the Eagle and Colorado rivers. I was fortunate to attend these events and would like to summarize what I can, plus let the group know of my (mis) adventures. As part of the festivities there was FanFest. This was a 5 day event at Cobo Hall, consisting of a card show (worthless, all extremely high priced meorabilia, mainly balls to have guests sign), autograph guests (average wait was over 2 hours and you never knew who would be autographing by the time you got up front. Exhibits from Cooperstown, and the Negro League HOF were also present. The Tigers had an exhbit about their history also. Representatives from the old All American Girls BB League were there signing and from the new Women's FastPitch league. Once inside almost all activities were free, including the autographs. They had plenty of activities for kids (and big kids like me). On Saturday, I went with a couple of old Jr. High School buddies. We were able to get 2 autographs of former major leaguers, Orlando Cepeda and my HOM Willie Horton. We also got some of the ladies. We got photos of us making an over the wall catch, and a VHS tape announcing a famous play in BB history. We did not wait in line for our own BB card (wonder why I did not do this???), the batting cages against a video of Roger Clemens or the pitching machines against Barry Bonds, as the lines were way too long. Biggest mistake was being goaded into competing against my buddies in the "stealing Home" exhibit. 3 electronicially timed lanes running from 3rd to home, on indoor astro-turf. As I approached the plate ( in the old geezer time of 4.51 to 4.95 and 4.52 for my buddies), my right hamstring gripped and I slipped on the plate. This combined to cause me to not be able to plant my next step and I went down sliding all the way to the back wall on my left leg (I was wearing shorts). The indooor turf ripped the leg raw. My buddies, although losing the race, had a tremendous laugh at my hurting myself yet again. I hopped around most of the rest of the afternoon and we soon left and we walked to the Hard Rock Cafe for Sunday saw Ron Perry coming down early and we went to the Renaissance Center (GM's World HQ) some of the Tigers were hosting a family day event aimed at those who could not afford the All Star game activities. Included was a Wiffle Ball hitting contest, which Ron qualified for the finals (we did not have time to stick around for the finals). We were able to get numerous autographs from Dave bergman, Dan Petry, Bill Freehan, Willie Horton, Darrell Evans and Milt Wilcox. We got around 30 autographs each from the above. We then grabbed lunch at Greek Town and went to the Minor League AS game, where we got a few more autographs, including Justin Verlander (The Tigers #1 prospect) & Huber who was the Futures Game MVP. I had the firms tickets 20 rows behind home plate and we had scouts in the section with their radar guns out. Tommy Lasorda was 1 section over, and I was able to get his autograph also. The Futures game was followed by a Celebrity Softball game that has been shown numerous times on ESPN. The game was hysterical, with the models, etc. spicing it up. Monday, Ron & I headed back to FanFest and got photos of us on Wheaties boxes and BB Weekly magazine. Another VHS tape announcing a famous BB moment and then a tape of us doing the nightly Fox Sports news report. We got more ladies autographs, but did not wait in line for the AS autographs. We also picked up a few free BBs. We also bought our AS game programs and got it autographed by the artist that designed the cover. There was also an artist who was commissioed to paint a mural by MLB. I got his autograph on a visor. Jackie Robinson's daughter was also there, autographing her book. We left, went to Greek Town for another lunch (Sunday's was much better) and then to the Home Run Derby. By htis time my leg from Saturday's ill- fated Stealing Home was starting to throb. My the middle of the derby they allowed me to sit in the handicap section. The Home Run Derby was the highlite of all the activities to me. Abreau put on an unbelieveable show in the 1st round. Home Town hero Pudge Rodriguez finished a surprising 2nd and actually won the 2nd round. Tuesday morning I was still wiped out. Ron went back to FanFest and I said I would meet him at the game. By early afternoon I really felt rotten and took my temp, which was spiking at 102. Turns out the leg had become infected. I went to the Dr. and he told me to stay off the leg. I was able to call a co-worker to pick me up and take me downtown to where the firm was entertaining a few clients. I joined them for dinner and took the shuttle to within a block of the game. I was using a crutch by now and hobbled in. They let me sit in handicap seating, and Ron was able to move down and join me around teh 6th inning. I was feeling miserable and did not really get to enjoy the game. It was not very competitive anyways and not much dramatic happened. By the 7th inning stretch I was spent and Ron had a 2 hour drive home and had to wrok early the next morning. They arranged a wheelchair and wheeled me out of the stadium. I stayed home and rested Wednesday before going to work Thursday and Friday using a crutch and wearing shorts to the office. I have stayed home Saturday & today and am still in considerable discomfort. The leg is still draining (I hurt it 8 days ago) and when the leg is not elevated, blood still runs down it. I am taking anti-biotics, even though the Dr.'s know I am allergic to oral anti- biotics. I am hoping this heals up quickly and does not trigger my other medical maladies, as the National is in less than 2 weeks and then my trip to the Northeast. Not going to be much fun, if I cannot walk. Still enjoyed the festivities, but not as much as I had hoped. Greed has taken over, again (what else is new in professional sports). They've really changed the parking situation. They started something new to get every last penny they can. For the entire life of the Vet, and the first year of Citizen's Bank Park, if you got there early and were willing to walk you could always park on Pattison Avenue. Not only was it free, it was MUCH easier to get out after the game, if you knew where you were going. Well, apparently someone decided that the Phillies couldn't afford to lose a couple of hundred parking fees, so this year there are signs that say "No parking during stadium events". That was bad enough. You could also park in the neighborhood streets--the people all had alleys and driveways in the back and I had never heard of any problems, but this year they started issuing residents "resident parking permits" which you need in order to park on the street during the games. To make matters worse, there are just about NO signs telling you this. I only found out when I pulled into a space and started feeling uneasy about how many open spaces there were. I found a local policeman and asked and he told me about it. He thought it was ridiculous too, but he said they had to enforce it. The net is, I hope whoever I gave parking instructions to hasn't gone yet, or if they did, they didn't follow my advice. I apologize, but after 34 years of doing something, you kind of assume it will stay that way. The sad part is, they didn't make the change due to traffic problems, neighborhood complaints, etc. I'm sure some politician got some money (or tickets) from the Phillies and they changed the parking rules. That said, the park is nice. Met Greg Luzinski. He was out by his BBQ stand, talking with folks, signing free autographs and just generally acting like he enjoyed baseball and baseball people. Of course the Phillies lost, 8-7. I think I'm something like 2-20 in Phillies games over the last decade (Living in Raleigh I don't get to too many). And, they still let you bring in food and soft coolers with plastic bottles. So you can still get a fantastic hoagie and real Philly soft pretzels before you go. ================= To: Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2005 18:09:17 -0700 From: "KIT OKAMURO" Subject: I40 and I10 trip next sunday ill be driving from one end of the 40 to the other end staying for a few and returning on the 10. anyone who lives off these routes and wants to hook up lmk. thanks kit okamuro ================= To: Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 06:22:29 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: Need an easy one! I may also try and take in a Lowell Spinners game on the 14th. I may even attempt to go to a Cape Cod league game. Bob also told me about a couple of card shops in the Downtown Crossing area of Boston. During the days, I hope to see some of the historical sites along the walking tour. Possibly head up to Gliucester for a whale watching tour, etc. The 15th in the undecided day at this point. The 16th has me headed to the Big Apple with the hopes of a Mets game on the 16th and or 17th (Yanks are out of town). Lunch with Ant one of the 2 days, check out the WTC site and statue of Liberty among other items on the agenda. The 18th has me headed southwest to the Philly area, or to Bethelem to visit Rick Svetcz. The Phillies are in town the 18th through the 20th. I plan on at least 1 of those nites going to a game. Lots of historic things to take in around Philly. I plan on taking advantage of Rick for a nite's lodging, but if there are others willing to put up with me in the Philly area, LMK. The 21st has me headed to an OBC stronghold - the Baltimore, DC, VA area. Peter Mead, did a great job as advance scout to find games to go almost every nite the 21st through the 25th. My sister and borther in law are expected in the DC/Baltimore area on the 21st, and we hope to to go a Bowie BaySox game that nite. I may return there on the 22nd as well. The 23rd has me going to see the Orioles and then the Nationals on the 24th. The 25th would be a Potomac Nationals game. During the day, I hope to check out the various DC, Arlington and Baltimore sites. At this point I sill need to start heading back towards Detroit. Possibly going white water rafting in WV or PA on the way. Pittsburgh has home games on the 26th and 27th, so that is a distinct possibility. From Pitt to Cleveland. Then back to Detroit, with a stop in Toledo to see John McLaughliin is a likely scenario. Back to work on the 30th??? Anyone in any of the areas I have mentioned that can get together, join me for site seeing or a ballgame, or put me up for a nite or 2, please let me know. My cell that I will have with me is (248) 709-2235. Hello All, I recently can upon a large lot of `74 Fleer Football cloth patches with team logos and shields. These were issued (2) per pack with a Football HOF card in `74 and `75. The cards are easily identifiable but I can find no information on the cloth patches. I have identified (56) different patch combinations, this includes (2) different logo shields for each of the (26) teams represented and various team labels (some are different and some are the same). There are also (4) League logos with the NFL (2 combinations), NFC and AFC (with 1 combination apiece). My questions include: Are there more than (56) cards in this set? Are there any more team shield/team label combinations for this set? Were certain shields issued in `74 and the other team shield issued in `75? If so, Does anyone know which ones for each year? Somewhere into the conversation, she realized that she called about a week early... probably when I mentioned that we could try to work out details when I check in on Tuesday and didn't mean what would have been 'tomorrow' at the time. It's kinda hard to place anorder anyway, since I'm not really going to know exactly how many people are going to be there until they actually show up. Just checking the latest roster from Sal, I see close to the 20 people I said would be there, but that doesn't include anyone but the OBC'ers (don't worry though - the "club room" we have is big enough to fit 50 people comfortably from what I understand... it's more like a section of a lobby) The important part of this whole call however, was that not only do we have a place to hold the swap set up, but there will be a trained staff at the ready to meet our needs - something that has been lacking at a number of previous swap sessions. Actually, the only other time things went off rather smoothly was the last time we all met up in Chicago. BTW, if you're still interested in attending the National and/or the swap session (July 30th) and need more info, WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN?!!? ...oh, I mean e-mail me right now and I can add your name to our dedicated mail server which has many of the planned activities and e-mail in the online archives. As far as the auction goes, Sal sent me his signed PTC card and a couple late addition lots that I put up as three day items (along with one I forgot to list earlier). There still remains just one lot that hasn't gotten a bid from those, so anyone who can use 20 vintage NY Jets cards can still steal these at a penny. What is it about the three T207's I put up that made them go for so much? I'm guessing that the factory numbers on the back might have something to do with it, but I'm not the Industry Expert I try to make myself out to be perhaps. Final numbers on the total raised won't be available until the last lot ends on Saturday night/early Sunday, but I think we've raised about $2700 with 35 lots left for last minute sniping (some of which are ending NOW as I send this). A lot of people tell me I'm doing a nice job with running this, but I still think I've got the easy part - awesome job everyone! I'll cut this off now, so I can let you get to your bidding ;-) TAYL, Ken M ================= Date: Thu, 21 Jul 2005 19:42:56 EDT To: CardClctor@aol.com, OBC-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Wite3@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] National trip and auction info The T-207s went high for one reason alone...the Marsans...very popular card of early cuban star. OBCers -- I don't know if you remember my story a couple months ago about Clarence Mengler seeing my wantlist and sending me some of his 1976 Clarence Mengler cards. I needed the Concepcion for my WS type collection, but he sent along a Don Kessinger and a Bill Madlock as well. If anyone is interested in one of these let me know - preference goes to anybody who can produce a type card off of my list (or even some of the Topps I need)! I was able to get down to Chicago to attend the National on Friday and the OBC swap session on Saturday. Both were fun. I saw 17 OBCers, meeting 7 for the first time. About 8 of us had lunch together on Friday and 17 attended the swap. Both days were productive. I finished two minor sets (1961 Golden Press and 1965 Embossed), the first courtesy of two OBC-friendly dealers and the second via a 3- or 4-way trade at the swap session. (It wasn't really a swap--more of a passing along of cards from one to another until the last two cards I needed for the set came my way.) Before the National, my 1953+ Topps wantlist stood at 145. In two days, the list fell to 118--a drop of more than one-sixth! With that kind of success, I wish I had time to spend a couple more days at the show. Two dealers were at the swap session: Kevin Savage, whose contribution paid for the meeting room, and a guy named Zimmerman out of Atlanta. Apparently, the OBC swap sessions are becoming known to the community of dealers and they wanted to spy on us. Zimmerman seemed to enjoy watching the OBC style of trading ("here are my dupes--take whatever you need.") I met a few dealers on Friday who have heard of OBC--one thought that OBC stands for "off-grade baseball cards." Thanks for specific cards from the swap session will be posted on another listserve. However, special thanks should go out to Ken Morganti who organized the swap session, Steve Rittenberg who circulated a list of dealers who had OBC-quality cards (which really saves a lot of time when one can only attend one day of the show), and Kevin Savage for sponsoring the swap session. Best wishes, Mike W ================= Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2005 21:40:24 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Bob D'Angelo" Subject: Wade Boggs special section Hi gang, The Tampa Tribune put out a special Wade Boggs section in today's paper to commemorate his Hall of Fame induction. Hi gang, I wandered through a local flea market yesterday morning and as usual, cards were slim. Although I did find one guy who had about 6 beat up commons from 53 - 57 topps. Said he'd take $75 for all of them. I bet he would... Anyway, I did manage to pick up a couple of old Louisville Sluggers. One is a Johnny Bench Little League model that overall looks really nice except for a couple of spots that look like someone tried to write a name in what I think is magic marker. The other is a Jackie Robinson model, that from what I can tell is a full-size not Little League, it's huge. There's a bit of grip tape clinging to it, and the back side is flattened, but from the front it's not noticeable, other than that it's just a bit dirty, but the Robinson signature is still very visible. Are there any particular methods for cleaning old bats, or should it be treated like any other old piece of wood? I'm particularly interested in anything that might be done to clean up the tape residue. Anyone have any tried and true methods? All help is appreciated. ...Save the gum for me! ================= To: Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2005 18:31:05 -0500 From: "George Vrechek" Subject: Variations were alive and well at the National I walked into the National on Saturday, spent 3 minutes at the first table and found the 1956 Schmidt with the blotched out statistics on the back. With a little more effort I picked up some of the 1956 line variations, a 1954 #189 Ross with a line through the second "S," and a 1971 #85 Grabarkewitzwith a white dot next to his hat instead of a red dot. At the OBC swap session following the National, Ken Morganti handed me a 1967 #128 Spiezio with the "Spie" mostly missing - a card I had been looking for without success. I must say I had a great time. I met so many members at the show and the swap. It is great as you walk around the card show you will see an OBC cap and as you move in closer you see them digging through a bargain box of cards and smiling ear to ear. You say hi but do not want to keep them from their task of cleaning that dealer out of as many cards as possible and making that great deal with them. You will be hanging out digging through a box of cards and someone will tap you on the shoulder and you turn around an it is an OBCer introducing himself or just saying hi and "did you find anything Then you will break for lunch and go through your findings of the day and before you know it you are hanging with a few OBCers talking sports and cards and great deals they found. The first day I told my wife to keep me focus on what I need as once you walk into the show, your mind goes blank and your game plan goes out the door. My wife had to "focus me" a few times. I could of spent all my cash the first day:-) After the show we all were to meet up for dinner, I was with the first group that got there (Kent and Sal, myself and my wife, Joanne). It was a 90 minute wait so we decided to go somewhere else. This is where it got a little interesting as I was with Kent and Sal and Kent decided to show us the sites of Des-Plaines Chicago My second day in, Gary Mandell took me, my wife and a future OBCer, Randy Wilberg (Randy will make a nice fit in OBC) to a Cubbie game. It was the first time I or my wife were at Wrigley. I felt like a kid who just entered his first candy store. I was in awe. I highly recommend to all to see a game at Wrigley. After the game we were all going to meet up in Chicago at a place Steve knows the owner. Gary gave us directions (Randy Wilberg, myself and my wife) as he had to finish up with his work for the day. i think Gary and my wife spoke behind my back to make sure I got enough excise as Gary had us all the way on the other side of town at the wrong place, so we ended up walking quite a bit, but we did get to see a lot of Chicago Once we walked to the right place and sat down, the food (Ribs) were excellent and the company was even better. We were all clowning around with one another like we knew each other for years. Dinner broke up and we all got together for some group shots out side Mother Hubbards (This is the place we ate at). The Next day it was back at the show. Chris Stufflestreet came up smiling ear to ear and said he just had the best deal of the show. He went to Johnson's table brought some cards at a great price, like next to nothing and then Johnson threw in like 6 1953 High numbers for nothing. So I made a mental note to drop by that table and I am glad I did, I brought some 68's 53's and 57s from him and he gave me such a good deal I decided there it was time to start the 56 Topps set, he gave me like 10 of the scarce series and threw in 2 team cards for 25 dollars As my wife and I walked around as I was about out of funds we came across Penny Marshall the actor and director as she was at the show signing Autographs, but she was just like the rest of us at the time we ran into her. She had a wantlist in her hands going table to table. My wife asked for a picture of her and she said sure but please hurry so other people do not see it. On to the Swap.. This was my first Swap, I heard so much about it. I got there and the pizza was there already and people were looking through each other boxes for cards they needed. Steve rolled in with a Luggage cart as he had like 5 monster dupes boxes. Ken Morganti started calling out cards he had and if anyone needed them and someone would yell I do and Ken would fling the card his way..neat!! Mike Rich had a 6 card pool of 1952 cards he picked up at the show. The winner of the pool gets the Gil McDougald hi number 1952 card. 7 of us went in the pool and I won. Ken pulled the winner, Ken pulled my name out, I loved it. Ken the 20 dollars will be in the mail tomorrow for fixing that for me..lol It was a great time for all. I will be posting a link to view the pictures that my wife Joanne took (she took a lot) tomorrow or the next day, I like to especially Thank Gary Mandell, Kent Goto, Sal Dominno, Randy Wilberg, they drove my wife and I around and made us feel like family, Thank you guys OBC - more than just cards, friendships for life!! Until Next year.. Happy Trading, Kevin Martens
