Andy Cook was in town, so Ron Perry drove 1 3/4 hours, Earl Kilborne about an hour, plus continued on to Andy's hotel, to pick him up and bring him to a small weekly card show that is about 7 miles from my office. For a weekly weekday show, there is surprisingly decent stuff there. Andy picked up a 35 Goudey, Salada coins, a 1956 Topps BB checklsit (hardly marked), etc. My lone pick- up was a 1965 Topps Fb checklist (marked of course). We then proceeded to the ballgame where I was able to get us 5 tickets about 20 rows behind home plate. The Tigers rallied froma 4- 1 deficit to break the Rangers 9 game winning streak. Starter Jeremy Bonderman was hit rather hard, but went 7 1/3 before giving way to Kyle Farnsworth. Farnsworth topped 100 mph on way to striking out both batters he faced. In the 9th, Ugeth Urbina struck out the side. So the Tiger relievers struck out all 5 batters they faced. Before Troy Percivel was injured the Tigers had what was known as the FUP plan. Farnsworth for the 7th, Urbina for the 8th and Percivel for the 9th. With Troy on the DL, it is now the FU plan, and it worked to perfection last nite. We skipped stopping off at my fav bakery (wimps!) so I did not get my double chocolate torte cake that is almost as dense as I am. Mark Talbot and I escorted Andy back to his hotel. We said to help gaurd him with his show pick-ups, but in reality to raid his dupe box, which has been mentioned on the thanks server. During the game, I mentioned that I disagreed with a BB stat. Quality start is defined as a starter who goes 6 or more innings and gives up 3 or less earned runs. I personally do not feel that once you have obtained a quality start (first 6 innings 3 or less earned runs) that you should be able to lose it (example 8 2/3 innings perfect gam, then a walk, bloop single, hit by pitch and a grand slam, is 4 earned runs in the 9th and you no longer qualify for a quality start). I feel the stat needs to be changed to purely did you or did you not give up 3 or less earned runs in the first 6 innings to keep your team in the game. I then went on to say that for the American League, I feel the pitchers should go longer (no pinch hitters for them), yet may give up more runs (DH). Therefore, it should be 4 or less earned runs in the first 7 innings for the AL. NL would be the 3 runs, 6 innings rule. Comments ranged from that was interesting, to I have too much time on my hands to think of such things, to we need to start a campaign to change the rule. Other OBC comments if you have read this far. I also seem to be the first to have received my OBC PTC cards, that Keith Summers arranged over the last couple of years (or was it his grandfather who started this project?). I passed them out to those in attendance who got a good laugh out of how bad the picture was, and I do not even think they were laughing at how I looked in the picture. It is possible others will not see these as they may end up in the trash. Been quite a while since I have been this disapponted in a project like this. Thanks for the efforts Keith in putting this together, but as far as I am concerned my participation is regretted and I think it was an abject failure. On the Mike Rich North American tour, there is a meeting scheduled for June 17 at the office with my 2 direct bosses. My guess is that we will set a date for closing down my division around the end of July (I am gone for the National) as our department, along with a couple others will need to move by August 1, as our lease is up. Why make room for us in a new building? Also, I want a couple of months to travel during the BB season. Although this still could change, I am starting to put together tour books and look at BB schedules for August & September to plan the trip. Anyone willing to host me for a couple of days would be appreciated, especially if you are near a stadium (major or minor league). Memorial Day weekend I actually went up to AnnA rbor to watch the NCAA Women's Softball Super Regionals. Caliber of play was better than I expected and we got to see a doubleheader. U of M (Michigan) won game 2 to advance to the College World Series. They are ranked #1 in the country. Between games I actually left the bleachers and went for a walk. I ran into a couple of the Washington University players, including the Pac 10 player of teh year. I spoke to them for a few minutes about the rupes (different than pure BB rules). Although there are a couple of Amazonian type women, as the sterotpe goes, there were far more good looking coeds playing. If you have not watched it, some of the World Series is on ESPN2. Check it out. Be well. I read a post from Cap Sinclair as I was trying to think of a title for this ramble, which is a recap of a great card store experience I just had. I started collecting in 1982 at age 9, and - amazingly - a guy who helped out at a store I used to frequent is now part-owner of one of the few remaining retail stores near me (Atlanta). They do a ton of slabbed stuff on ebay, but they also buy lots of collections, so the occasional OBC group lot will trickle in. I stopped in to see my buddy Jeff, and as luck would have it, after he helped me with a few cards from the display case, he pulled out a couple boxes of assorted vintage stuff he was getting ready to sort and list on his website. After about a 1/2 hour, he and the other guys at the store got hungry, so we all ordered lunch and took a timeout to catch up. After lunch, Jeff reached for the stack of cards I had pulled, and here's what we came up with: 1) 1 51B & 4 53 B B/W (note: they're uncreased, so I'll have to back over them in the driveway a few times) from the case - $25 2) 63F Joe Adcock VG/EX from the case - sticker price $50/Jeff's price $20 3) 46 cards I pulled from the box, including 58T Musial, 41 PB Keller, 54T Billy Martin, 70 Seaver, 68 Carew, 63 Uke, a few other stars and a bunch of 52-55 Topps - $35 (not a misprint; less than I felt so good, I actually had him throw in a box of "garbage wax" (92 Stadium) for $10, just so I could feel even more like a kid again when I got home to tear into a box that actually has FIFTEEN cards in a pack and THIRTY-SIX packs in a box. Sorry if it sounds like I'm bragging; I'm just happy and want to share with the guys who can appreciate a good deal and who "remember the feel of the candy store steps." It seems that from the very start you were functioning under Murphy's Law. Am I disappointed with how long it's taken to complete the project? Yes, but I believe that you did all you could considering what & who you were working with. Having seen most of the cards via your emails, I have to say that overall they look pretty good. Then again, I'm not a real good judge because I think all cards are cool and am sometimes confused when others talk about certain cards being "ugly". I certainly understand Mike's frustration, I would not be happy if my card had a dumpster in the background. It was a very long wait for something that was quite a disappointment. I am looking forward to getting my complete set and a bunch of #16's to hand out to family and friends. I'm sure some wise guy will say "why do you have a dumbster in the foreground?" I am also geeked to sign and send one out to Ken for the John Ball project. I think we are also sending an unsigned version to some one else? Whatever we have decided I'm all for it, just LMK. Larry Fritsch ================= Date: Sat, 4 Jun 2005 18:12:37 EDT To: OBC-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Subject: 2005 PTC Report Hi gang, As Keith and Mike Rich have commented on earlier, the OBC personal trading card set is now finished and on it's way to mailboxes around the country and eventually the globe. Before I get into a card by card summary of what to expect, a few comments on the project. Not to diminish all the hard work Keith put into this, but I'd be lying if I said I was completely thrilled with the way things turned out. I've been involved in group projects over the years ,so I have some idea of the work that goes into them. I won't go as far as to agree with the term 'abject failure', but to put it into one word, I'll go with 'disappointment'. For something that took over a year to complete, most of the cards look like they were thrown together at the last minute - probably because they were with the printing company's imminent sale. A lot of the info that was sent in was left out of the set, partly due to lack of communication, some to do with changing of printers in charge of the project, and I think also due to the fact that Keith has a webtv unit and therefore no hard drive to save a lot of the data. I guess the kicker is that the copyright line on every card says Four 40 "cars" instead of "cards". Anyway, on to the cards: #1: Sal Domino - Apparently Sal thought we were going to order the set by height as he grabbed the first card in the set. 1955 Bowman style showing him in his OBC shirt and cap holding his personal mini bat. The back, which is one of the few with a bio, highlights his 2004 softball season. This one probably won't carry a premium like the '52 Pafko. #02 Scott Earle - 1965 Topps style. Really not a lot to comment about this card other than it being the only number that starts with a zero. There just isn't a lot of info on the back, although I think it's only one of two with a wantlist address. #3 Mike Rich - I guess Mike and Keith have already commented on this card, so I won't add much other than to congratulate the photographer for capturing Mike right after he finished scouring the dumpster for tiptons ;-) #4 Bob Corvello - Friar takes a page out of Carl Yastrzemski's book and poses with the profile head shot similar to Yaz's 1978 card (only no long sideburns) A 1965 style card with plenty of white space on the back for an autograph... and maybe he can write his bio in there too #5 Spike Glidden - naturally Matt takes this number for his 1965 style card. He's wearing his Seattle cap and I believe holding one of the antique bats we were playing with at Bob Donaldson's house. Another card with lots of room on the back. #6 Ken Morganti - I'm on the '55 type card in my OBC cap holding an old bat ala Spike. The pic is kinda dark, especially around my face, but that might be a good thing. Although I sent in my 50 word bio at least three times, none of it made it to the final cut. #7 Bob and Sara Donaldson - One of the few cards that really looks like it should. Probably modeled after the 55 Bowman Shantz brothers card, this one features Bob and daughter Sara along with a team name (Boston Bashers) and bios for BOTH on the back as well as a short writeup on the team. #8 Tood Knowles - Todd's card shows him a little off center in the TV set and wearing a face that almost looks like a scowl. All these years that I've known him, I've never seen him with a face like that (although I never heard him called "T.K." before either). Maybe he knew how his card was going to turn out? #9 Stevbe Rittenberg - "Hammer" is shown with his OBC cap on in a much closer than it probably should be photo. One of only a handful of cards diplaying an e-mail address on the back. #10 Doug Smith - breaks up the mini run of TV sets with his 65 Topps lookalike showing him in his OBC shirt and cap. Picture is taken against a plain background, which would make it one of the few that an autograph would really stand out on the front. #11 Marshall West - A 65 Topps card that reminds you an awful lot of a 52 Topps Zernial, only Marshall has 6 golf balls stuck to a golf club. In fact, Gus is mentioned on the back (part of his e-mail address) as well as the meaning of the six golf balls. A classic. #12 Mark Talbot - A 55 Bowman that reminds me of the 1953 Topps set a little in the fact that Mark's name is spelled out in the background of the card. However, instead of an artist's drawing of a generic wall, Mark is wearing his OBC cap in front of the Comerica Park scoreboard. #13 Bob D'Angelo - "Tampa Bob" is sporting a Yankee cap and is only one of two in the set with a baseball glove. I don't know if the picture is fuzzy or that's an artist's drawing actually. Lots of white space on the back of this #14 Keith Summers - Keith had the luxury of working on the set himself, so it's no wonder that this one looks as good as it does. I can't say the same for the guy in the photo Hand serial numbered to 107. One of the short prints in the set and so far the only one I have autographed. #15 Ken Goetsch - Ken is shown wearing a Mighty Ducks(?) hat overlooking the ballfield waaay behind home plate. This '65 style card is almost blank on the back. Plenty of room for an autograph and a short personalized note as well. #16 Earl Kilbourn - Earl is shown in his OBC attire preparing to catch a bag of chicken salad sandwiches from the press box. Well that's what the photo reminded me of (from Al Silvera's '56 Topps card in the "Flipping...." book) #17 John Scott Gray - is that a russian hockey uniform? JSG's TV card has a bio on the back, which I would relay to you all if it wasn't printed in 2 point font. I think it should've been switched with the AKA, DOB, and Home info, which occupies the much bigger lower section on the back. #18 Father Pat Wittigny - Padre's card is a nice looking TV set with a rather lengthy write up on the back. The only thing I can think of to improve this one is to make the OBC logo on the front in color. #19 Rex Stahlman - In a sort of tie in to the previous card, Rex is pictured in a San Diego Padre's uniform and his OBC hat. Not a lot of info to be found on the back other than his name, BOB and bithplace though. #20 Matt Heilenman - Mattman is the 1970 Topps Lowell Palmer (#252 if you're wondering) of the set. Pictured on a '65 Topps mockup, Matt inspires fear in opposing batters with his cool shades, although you won't get any of that info from reading the back. #21 Brett Domue - Brett's card most closely resembles one I've seen of his archnemesis, Mr. Mint. Brett is shown in his OBC garb standing in front of quite a collection of cards. He's holding his OBC mini bat and a trio of pre-war cards. A decent amount of info on the back for a change. #22 Ray Luurs - "Oak" is shown wearing what appears to be a vintage baseball uniform. Not a lot of writing on the back and Ray is wearing that look that he has seen what his cards are going to look like too. #23 John Harrell - squaring around to bunt in front of a brick wall (Wrigley?) Bama's name obscures most of the vintage bat however and the back of the card yeilds very little additional information. #24 David Skoglund - Adding yet another sport to the mix, David is decked out in his OBC cap and a cricket uniform (with the flat bat). Another card with a bio in microscopic font that should've been switched with the other stats. Well, that's a wrap. Look for the entire set up for auction on eBay in a week (hopefully). I'm still waiting for my cards to come in, but I'll start sending them out to everyone as soon as I do. A perfect example is the Dave Concepcion for my 1975 Reds/Red Sox set - I needed to find a Clarence Mengler postcard to knock that one of the list. It's in the SCD Price Guide if you want to have a look, but if not, they are essentially pencil drawn portraits on a postcard, designed to be autographed. I had never seen one before, but on the list it went. Just before I left for vacation, I received an email from...drum roll please...Clarence Mengler! He did a Google search on his name and my wantlist came up #1! He offered to send me the Concepcion card since he has a few left, but said the MLBPA pretty much shut him down. He collected autographs, so he thought they would be cool to get signed, but the MLB had other thoughts and he became the first guy to get run for unlicensed photos. He said he had to destroy most of them, but he had sold 25-35 sets and kept about 200 or so of each, so there aren't a whole lot of them out there. Anyway, he sent me the Concepcion, a Kessinger, and a Madlock (since I'm a Cubbie guy). I'll probably pass the two Cubbies along some day in the near future to an unsuspecting OBCer. I thought it was a pretty cool story, so I thought I'd pass it along! The last time I bought from them about a week after I got my bank statement showing my check had cleared I called them up to see where my cards were and they said they were scheduled to ship still one more week later. My opologies to my fellow FOOTs and our recent guest of honor. As you will recall, many moons ago the more responsibly prompt members of the Michigan contingent of OBC posted thanks and filed their reports on Andy Cook's visit to Tiger Town. In an effort to partially atone for my inexcusable tardiness I offer the following rambling thanks. First a thanks to Mike Rich who provided the tickets to the Tiger's game and coordinated the welcome back Andy gathering. In an even greater gesture Mike actually accepted my offer to pick up and deliver Andy to the Wednesday evening card show at the Elk's. I think that my successful completion of the correspondence course via Big Al's School of Travel & Navigation had much to do with his decision. I am happy to say, Mike's leap of faith was not unfounded. I made the trek from Grand Blanc to Detroit arriving at Andy's hotel at the designated time without a hitch. Our timing was excellent as Andy was optimistically waiting for me outside on my second lap around the Ren Cen. Even more astounding was our expeditious and safe trip back to the Elk's. Well, there was that time that I took both hands of the steering wheel and started to drift a bit, but Andy must take some responsibility for that. A lesson to future OBCers visiting our fair State: do not ask a Michiganian the location of Michigan cities and towns while we are driving. When Andy informed me that he had a relative who lived somewhere in the Thumb of Michigan, I was compelled to point out the location of the town he mentioned. I immediately and instinctively raised my right hand and used my left hand to point out the exact location. Given that most of us here are bi-handed I had none left to steer my vehicle. Fortunately we where on a straight stretch of the freeway at the time. Once at the Elk's, Andy and I meandered around the tables that seemed to be mostly non sports and or uv stuff. We did find a few tables with some older stuff and both made a few purchases. As is the tradition at our gatherings, the closest will be last and the furthest shall be first. Of course Andy, living in another State was the first to arrive at our rendezvous, with yours truly getting an assist. The next to arrive was Ron Perry, a Bay City resident and the next furthest away. For the more curious of OBCers, raise your right hand and point to the space between your index finger and your thumb, that is the general location of Bay City. At any rate, to my knowledge, Mark Talbot and Mike Rich, the most local guys, arrived almost simultaneously. Since we wanted to get to Comerica Park before the seventh inning stretch, we drug Mike out after just one quick purchase. No sooner did we get to the parking lot and a flurry of cardboard commenced flying, some of which flew in my direction. Then off to the Ball Park were we with the brave and adventurous Andy & Ron riding with me. Our trip was uneventful with the exception of when Ron urged me to make a "sharp left" pointed right, and I continued straight. With a slight detour we were back on course. Once at the Park, Mike led us to our seats behind home plate and we settled in for a great night of baseball. As previously reported, it was a well played & exciting game with the exception that both team's pitchers kept intercepting the third basemans balls. The fact that the Tigers earned a well deserved come from behind victory made it even better and of course there is the always insightful "Rich thoughts". After the game Ron and I decided to call it a night as Mike, Mark and Andy headed back to Andy's hotel for a late night card swap. Now to the thanks as I rememberer them: MIKE RICH for a 82 Squirt of Tiger's skipper Alan Trammell, a Pistons pin- button & some Tiger OPC's that are I think dealer scum from his recent trip to Canada. Mike, what do I owe you for these hard to find gems? Mark Talbot hits me with 14 58T's & I think it was he who handed me a Detroit News publication featuring the Tiger's 84 World Championship season and a couple posters. These could have been from Mike, I'm not sure, but unless & until I'm corrected, I'm giving Mark the credit. Whoever it was, one of the posters was of the UHL Motor City Mechanics Hockey Team with locked out Red Wings Chris Chelios & Derian Hatcher. Speaking of Hockey, Andy pulled off a hat trick, depositing in my OBC cap a slew of Topps from 58, 63 & 67. In addition I discovered a 61 Post of Stormin' Norman Cash, a 56T Billy Hoeft & 19 Kelloggs cards. I'm sure my cap was on the backseat of my vehicle at the time and not on my head or I'm sure I would have noticed sooner. I hope I gave the right person credit for the right cards, if not I offer my apologies & a promise to do better next time! One thanks I know is right goes to Mike, Mark, Ron & our guest of honor Andy for a great evening of companionship, cards, Comerica, and a bit of crazy chaos of the comic variety. I have not been as active in the group over the last few years as I had been before that. I have just completed a 3-year term as Chair of the Department of Psychology at Marquette University (home of the Warriors . . . . Golden Eagles . . . Gold . . . something). When I accepted the chairmanship, I knew that my hobbies would suffer. Well, I have just been elected (sentenced?) to serve another 3-year term. When the Assistant Chair tallied the votes, she announced that I had been re-elected for another "three terms"--I soon corrected her that it would only be for another three and not nine years. So, I guess that means I will continue to be less active in the group than I would like to be. Still, I treasure OBC and will participate as my work demands allow. I attended a small local show yesterday. It only had 7 dealers, and so I wasn't expecting much. However, one dealer was new--he was really a collector who was selling part of his collection because of debts. I have been looking for a 1963 Banks for months--he had 4 of them, the worst of which soon found its way to my collection. I also picked up a high number 1966 for half of what I would gladly have paid. The real find was a beat-up 1955 Bowman Aaron card, which I picked up for [drum roll, please] $1.50. The card looked as though it had survived a kid's bicycle spokes, a washer-dryer cycle, and being driven over by a dump truck (although I couldn't tell in which order these occurred). The card will occupy a prized place in my Braves collection. Another dealer, who has a lot of vintage stuff, but who always asks high book prices, had a box of off-grade cards for bargain bin prices--which he then cut in half for the show. I picked up a whole slew of 1952 Topps and 1953 Bowman cards for about $1.00 each. Pretty soon, I will have to put together lists for those sets. My friends, I wanted to drop a note to the listservs to let people know why I have beenout of the loop, and out of my mind, the last few weeks. I found out in March that my fulltime position at Southeastern Illinois College was not going to be renewed in 05-06 because of budget issues. While this was suspected and expected, what was not was the news that all philosophy classes (which were cut from 5 a term to only 2 for the next year) were not going to beoffered to me on an adjunct basis, but were instead going to be taught by the shiny new English instructor that we just hired in January. It turns out that he has been whispering to the chair of the department that he wouldLOVE the chance to teach my classes -- now he has it! Still, the student revolt that ensued (unsupported by me) that included a petition signed by nearly 200 students (a large number for our small community college) did make me feel a touch vindicated, although it did not help me keep my job. My three classes this summer at SIC will be my last. So, I have been busy trying to find new employment. As luck would have it,something has come up -- another one year position. This one, however, will have my wife and I traveling cross country to Northern California -- Arcata to be exact, as I take a position at Humboldt State University in August. So, shutting things down here and trying to get organized for the move are taking a great deal of time. The vintage cards are making the trip out(including the dupes box -- or at least, what's left of the dupes box after some swapping in Chicago for the national -- I still plan on going, if I can find a hotel room floor to put my sleeping bag on)! A great many of mycards/books/clothes, however, are moving to a climate-controlled storage room here in Southern Illinois. Since I still have hopes of landing a job on the east coast (I hear a couple of coastal Carolina schools will be hiring in the new year), we will have to come through here eventually. So if I have been lax in returning emails or cards, I hope you will forgiveme. I know that many of you have been going through difficult moments yourselves in the last few months, and I have been thinking of many of you even as I try to look out for myself here in Marion. My wife and I are reallyquite excited about our little one-year vacation to the pacific (the furthest west I have ever been is San Antonio). Ok, so I am excited and my wifeis scared out of her mind (she loves security and stability, like most normal people). Regardless, we will actually have a second bedroom that contains a second bed in the new place, so feel free to swing by once we get setup. We will not move until the first week of August, so the current addresses should still be good. I will let you guys know how things continue todevelop.... My daughter Melissa turns 7 in August. She'll be on hand in Chicago when I go to the National and looks forward to the trip. Which brings me to my rambling: As long as she's been aware, Melissa has known that her father is a fan of baseball and the New York Yankees. I've done my best to help share that love to my impressionable little girl, which has led her to three seasons of soccer. Don't ask me how that worked; I can't figure it out. By the time she was five, Melissa was able to identify two baseball teams by their insignia...the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox (and as Steve R. muttered when I mentioned that the first time I stayed at his place, "Those are the only two teams that matter."). Well, there was the matter of her identifying old Dodgers as Red Sox players because of the "B" on their caps, but I've worked with her on that, but I digress... I have also tried to share with her my OTHER passion: great rock & roll. As a former radio DJ, I was fortunate enough early in my adulthood to share that passion with my listeners (yes, I managed to toss in a few songs that weren't on the station wantlist from time to time -- but that's a benefit of doing the late night shift) and I've managed to get Melissa to gain some appreciation as well. However, the other day I was playing some stuff on the computer from the 1960s and trying to figure out what I wanted to put on a CD, and Melissa fell in love with one of the songs. She not only wanted to hear it again, but she wanted me to put it in the file I keep for her until I have enough tunes to burn a CD for The song? "Dirty Water" by the Standells! Thinking that she might like the sound of the tune, so I played a couple of other songs in that vein for her: Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" and the Sir Douglas Quartet's "She's About a Mover." No dice; she wanted the Standells. And it was because of the line "Boston, you're my home." I'm beginning to think my little girl is turning into a Bosox fan. So, that song will appear on the next CD I burn for her, somewhere between Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely" (a remade version of that song plays on Radio Disney, so it caught her attention), the Four Seasons' "Rag Doll" and Ray Stevens's "Harry the Hairy Ape." I had a pretty good LP collection until about 3 months ago. I'd collected albums from about '74 to '86, at which time I bought my first CD player and started buying discs exclusively. It was one of the few times in my life that I picked up on a new technology right at the beginning and had it prove to be the right decision! My existence has been littered with failed modern After moving into our new house in 2001, I finally packed away my turntable, boxed up all my albums, and exiled them to the attic. I'd replaced most of my faves with CD versions, and rarely played an album at all, so the time was right. A few months back, we had to clear out the attic to get some work done, and I decided to drag my old album collection along to a second-hand dealer to see what kind of offer he'd make me. Out of about 420 albums, some were in a poor condition (mostly down to just being played so much!), while others were too damned embarrassing to admit to owning. I whittled them down, and took about 330 in to the shop. The guy asked if I could leave them for a couple of days, and that he'd contact me with an offer. I was expecting perhaps ?150-200 (that's about $260-350) which I would have been happy with. He called me the next day, and said that as soon as he saw the condition of the covers (I always took very good care of my albums) he knew that he had some quality stuff to deal with. He offered me ?400 cash (about $700). He also said that if I wanted to offset any of that amount as credit to use in his shop, he would give me an extra 50%. I nearly ripped his hand off. I walked out with ?200 cash and a ?300 credit note. So far, I've picked up about 40 CDs from the store and I still have about ?100 of credit Thanks to that credit note, some amazing local sales, a little copying here and there (naughty, naughty), and overuse of Amazon's "New & Used" section, I've gone completely bananas on CDs recently. The collection has escalated from 450 18 months ago to 860 today. I've been a big fan of progressive rock all my life, listening to artists like Genesis, Yes, The Alan Parsons Project, Mike Oldfield and such. Recently, I've been discovering the world of "neo-prog", new progressive music and it's opened up whole new avenues for me. Bands like Porcupine Tree, The Tangent, and Kaipa are now in my CD drawer constantly. And thanks to the wonders of that Interweb thingy (thank you, Al Gore!), I'm even discovering loads of prog bands from the 70's and 80's that I'd never even heard of before. So much music, so little time! Just to weave this back (spurious though it may seem) to some semblance of a baseball thread, I suppose that I could sift through my collection and probably come up with a pretty good stadium themes/sports related compilation disc if I put my mind to it. To start us off, I've got a kick-ass version of Denny McLain playing "The Girl From Ipanema" on his Hammond organ! I still have the LP (NM still since I take very good care of my records). You can click the link I've attached for more info but unfortunately this is not one of those where you can play a clip. BTW I doubt he will be back in MLB because of his BBs. His WHIP as of 3 days ago was 2.42! Also of note is TW asked the Braves NOT to play it for Rocker in 2000.) Cincy RP Stone=?????? They mentioned it today on the radio but I already The song THE WALK is also on that LP by the Inmates & would be great for the ballpark. Dirty Water & it are the 2 best songs on it. I heard another song played the other day after a Base on Balls, WALK LIKE A MAN maybe? I have a CD I think with ball park anthems or the like on it such as Gary Glitters HEY! song & Queen's We Are The Champions, etc. I've seen titles such as STADIUM ROCK, etc at Best Buy & in TV ads. Good luck Friar & LMK just for the record (no pun), when you find out. Yahoo! As I extend my plans to really retire from education, I thought it would be fun to finally do something about that book about education that I always wanted to write. Actually, I have come to the conclusion that the book probably will never be written, at least not in the traditional form;but all of the ideas are still there and they keep circling around in the =E2=9COld Friar=E2=99s=E2=9D brain. What I have decided to do is create a blog and then launch an attempt to keep adding to it. For those of you who may not be familiar with blogs, they web pages expressly designed to publish logs - notes, opinions, musings, etc. - about particular themes or subjects. My plan is to address my perceptions about problems in American education that I have encountered and been concerned about over the years as both a teacher and adminstrator. As I note in one of the first blogs, it will be my attempt to back up and look at the forest, now that I have a little perspective, with the hope of sparking some dialogue and calling attention to issues I think are important. I am inviting you to take a look, and, most of all, to use the comment links to explain how you feel on the issues raised. No contribution of opinion will be considered unimportant or dismissed. Actually, I intend to respondto all of them. I want to have some fun with this, and I hope you will too. You can find my blog at _http://friarfour.blogspot.com/_ (http://friarfour.blogspot.com/) . Right now I am concentrating on introductory messages, hoping to attract interest; but very soon I will be getting into detail about specific issues. As this thing develops, I ask that we can follow this list of guidelines and suggestions: - People who respond should feel free to promote any opinion - in agreement with me or not. Opposing points of view will certainly generate a dialogue, and that=E2=99s great. In line with this, please accept my opinions as intended. None are designed to offend anyone and all are designed to promote what I see in the best interest of kids. - Please be polite. This exercise is meant to be based on my professional career observations. Whether you are or were a professional in the field of education or not, let=E2=99s all respect each other and honor the fact that perspectives are healthy. - If you have something to suggest, but you don=E2=99t really want it inthe blog, feel free to send an email to me at this address - _friar4@aol.com_ (mailto:friar4@aol.com) . One of my secret motives here is that I would love to hear from you in any medium. This is partially just a sneaky way to bring about that possibility. - Enjoy the dialogue and reflect about the opinions. If you don=E2=99t want put your feelings online or in an email to me, than just feed your own curiosity by enjoying the chronicles about some of my own confusion. Maybe it will help you to understand me and some of the things I have said and done overthe - Keep in mind that I am not making money on this. Blogs tend to work in a way that the most recent submission is at the top of the page. You will see the submission dates. If you want to trace the thread, you really need to start at the bottom. I figure it's about time give y'all an update on my goings on recently. Some not-so-good, others good, so here goes.. First off, as some may remember, I have been going through a divorce. My sooner-or-later-to-be ex announced her lost faith in our marriage to me in May 2003 and finally left for good in October 2003. Well, two plus years later I am still not divorced. I have become a small piece of meat in the giant grinder we all know as "the legal system." What's unfortunate is that we do not have kids and do not own a business together. At issue is the house that we resided in (and that I still reside in) that was purchased by my family years ago. What's also unfortunate is that I do not see the issue resolved any time soon. A sad and long series of events have led to this neverending saga. The whole things has made me lose any hope that "justice" will be served at all. Even if things work out to what I would consider an acceptable resolution does not change the fact that I will have wasted (at least) three years of my life that I can never recover, not to mention the piling legal bills. I find this to be the ultimate injustice that no judge, lawyer or mediator can make right. Last February, the man in called my father passed away suddenly. In reality he was my stepfather, but in every other way he was my father. I have been helping my mother get things done and stay on course in life, a large task considering that I'm also trying to do the same with my own life. It's been difficult for us but we are slowly adjusting to life without him. As if dealing with death and divorce weren't bad enough, I found out this week that my best friend of 30 years (I'm only 35) is moving to the Midwest. This has had me in sort of a funk, not wanting to believe it but at the same time knowing its true and inevitable. Not all is gloomy here, though. I just spent the last three hours sorting through piles of cards gone ignored for months. These piles started building up last February while tending to family matters. Shortly thereafter, I ditched AOL in favor of Comcast cable internet. It's more expensive but infinitely faster than dial-up. Actually, it's pretty much a wash since I also canceled my land phone service, using just a cell phone as my only verbal communication device. With the switch to cable internet, I had to rearrange my den (the card room) to put the PC near the cable outlet. Wouldn't you know it but while rearranging I ended up spilling a couple of key boxes of cards: some were incomings that I had checked off my lists, some were incomings I hadn't checked off my lists, some were dupes and some I had no idea what they were. So between that debacle and my switching IP's, my wantlist disappeared. I just went through the paper list and now have to transfer them electronically. I may still have my old AOL files...or I may not. To add injury to insult, my hard drive crashed shortly before my conversion to cable. They would be fairly easy to convert if I still had them, but that's a big IF. So for those of you who may have wondered where my wantlists went, there ya go! Sidenote: at least year's National in Cleveland, I purchased a bunch of cards that were in albums that had water damage. The story I was given was that they were in the guy's basement and after the water damage became smelly and a bit moldy. To rid the smell, I locked sealed them in a container with some candles with a note "do not open until Labor Day." Well, as I was going through my lists I noticed some cards missing and after a while it occurred to me where they were...in the container! I had forgotten all about it - they had been sealed up for almost a year! I had forgotten what a good deal these were: 59 high numbers and 62 green tints for a nickel each and stars like a 62 Clemente and a 67 Maris for a buck. They still look water damaged (some are actually quite nice by my standards or lack thereof) but boy do they smell nice! I've been playing just a little golf this year, as opposed to the obsession I've had in past years. The entire month of May was a washout (it rained SEVEN consecutive weekends here) and the last couple of weeks have seen oppressive heat and humidity. Ordinarily I'd be golfing right now, but with 90+ temps fuh-get about it! I have also played a lot of cribbage: live, against pc programs and online. During the winter months I played in a pool league and also pick-up hoops with a bunch of friends. This October I will be going to Myrtle Beach, SC for (I think) the sixth time for..what else...golf. I haven't been to any card shows lately but up there they are shrinking in number. A couple of regular shows are taking the summer off. I used to go to a few shows a year but am now relegated to one in November (Shriner's) and one in January (RI). I will not be attending this year's National due to my Myrtle trip but will try and go next year - Atlantic City as I recall. If I can keep my 1991 Taurus running that long I can probably drive down. By then, my car might tell my it's a one way ride and collapse a la Bluesmobile. Me thinks that's a pretty good summary of recent happenings. I know I've been pretty quiet but other (mostly unfortunate) things have taken up a lot of my time. I'm still a member of the AC and take that duty very seriously. I read the servers so I do know what's going on. I'm still a pretty laid back sort deep down but have had to carry some extra weight around and as you can imagine it creates a drag. Thanks to everyone out there for your support...and a special thank you if you've read this far :-) Happy Collecting! ================= Date: Sun, 26 Jun 2005 18:47:06 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: smartalecx@aol.com Subject: thanks and national question thanks to GEORGE VRECHECK for a quite enjoyable afternoon at comisky park watching mark prior outpitch john garland for a cubs 2-0 winner over the white george and i were talking about trying to set up some sort of cookout or something similar for the friday night of national weekend. we're both apartment dwellers in the city, so we dont have the space that dave kolenda had a few years ago, but maybe we can work something out. so my question is this: would those attendees be interested in such an event, and if so, would you prefer it to be near o'hare and the convention (which probably means renting a room at a hotel), or in the city, where maybe we can get a room at a a restaurant if we have a large enough crowd? please let me know soon, as we need to hustle if we need to find a room. tnx, gary mandell ================= To: friar4@aol.com Date: Sun, 26 Jun 2005 19:04:08 -0400 From: Bob Saxton Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] A non-sports-related ramble and invitation Hi, Friar, et. al.! Atually there is a very natural connection between collecting baseball cards and education. As a youngster, decades older than many OBCers, I learned everything from math (calculating batting averages and ERA's) to geography (locating the cities and stadiums, player' home towns) and economics (my demand for cards in the 50's exceeded the supply of cash from my paper route). Actually, I have come to the conclusion that the book probably will never be written, at least not in the traditional form; but all of the ideas are still there and they keep circling around in the “Old Friar’s” brain. What I have decided to do is create a blog and then launch an attempt to keep adding to it. For those of you who may not be familiar with blogs, they are web pages expressly designed to publish logs - notes, opinions, musings, etc. Actually, I intend to respond to all of them. I want to have some fun with this, and I hope you will too. You can find my blog at http://friarfour.blogspot.com/. Right now I am concentrating on introductory messages, hoping to attract interest; but very soon I will be getting into detail about specific issues. As this thing develops, I ask that we can follow this list of guidelines and suggestions: - People who respond should feel free to promote any opinion - in agreement with me or not. Opposing points of view will certainly generate a dialogue, and that’s great. In line with this, please accept my opinions as intended. None are designed to offend anyone and all are designed to promote what I see as in the best interest of kids. - Please be polite. This exercise is meant to be based on my professional career observations. Whether you are or were a professional in the field of education or not, let’s all respect each other and honor the fact that different perspectives are healthy. - If you have something to suggest, but you don’t really want it in the blog, feel free to send an email to me at this address - friar4@aol.com. One of my secret motives here is that I would love to hear from you in any medium. This is partially just a sneaky way to bring about that - Enjoy the dialogue and reflect about the opinions. If you don’t want to put your feelings online or in an email to me, than just feed your own curiosity by enjoying the chronicles about some of my own confusion. Maybe it will help you to understand me and some of the things I have said and done over the years. - Keep in mind that I am not making money on this. You will see a few Google sponsored ads on the page, and I may or may not make a few pennies (literally) on these, but this is far from a money making venture. It is as stated, an opportunity to start discussions about topics that have tumbled around in my professional soul over the years. - It may be better to read from the bottom up when you go to the web page. Blogs tend to work in a way that the most recent submission is at the top of the page. You will see the submission dates. If you want to trace the thread, you really need to start at the bottom. The opportunity-to-comment links are found at the end of each submission. Whether you decide to take a peek or not, I want to thank you for reading this far. I realize that this kind of discourse is not something enjoyed by everyone. Bob Corvello “The Old Friar” http://friarfour.blogspot.com/ Yahoo! Ken - fill us in? His name is Frank Raffaele and he lives in NYC - he's already paid via Paypal for all 25 lots he won (plus the $19+ I added for shipping). My guess is that he's going to load up those one pound lots with a little more vintage - might make them more attractive to the suckers... er, I mean bidders out there on eBay. If you check his feedback, a lot of the winners of his lots make comments about the lower condition of the cards, although the item listings don't say you're going to get all mint cards either. His 14 lb. 10 oz. package went out today with delivery confirmation and $900 insurance. The John Ball auction continues this week (albeit a little more slowly), with some of the larger items. Next week I hope to polish things off with all the pre- war (there's a nice selection) and the ...ahem, UV and odd leftovers. My $5 dupes will continue to run throughout the entire auction - just in case Mr. asseyturtle or someone else decides he wants to scoop up a bunch of low grade pre-war too. It's always an option if you get shut out of the regular lots and still want to make a donation. Just so everyone knows, I am holding onto any OBC bound lots for a little extra time to hopefully add 'bonus' cards from your respective lists... plus it'll give you a chance to win more lots and get them all at the same time - I will combine shipping TAYL, Ken M ================= Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2005 21:13:40 EDT To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: ChicoD1@aol.com Subject: Catching up...
