Today was one of those days that make life worth living. I played hookey in the afternoon to attend the Brewers-Cubs game. I arrived at the ticket office and asked what they had behind home plate, no matter how high up. They still had some Uecker seats availble. These are on the 4th level, with sight-lines impaired by the pylons that support the motors that control the retractable roof. However, they only cost a dollar. So, for a dollar, I got a seat on the 4th level, and just moved over a section. When I went for my free Pepsi, through the Designated Driver program, the salesperson gave me a larger size than she should have. Then, for making me wait for change for my hotdog, she gave it me for free. The Brewers then went on to win their 7th in a row, sweeping the series against the Cubs. Highlights included a pinch homerun by Wes Helms, who has been hitting abysmally so far this year, and a 2 for 4 day, including a homer, by back-up catcher Chad Moellerm who went into the game hitting .086. The winning run scored with 2 outs in the 9th, with a short flyball to right that the Cubs 2nd baseman lollygagged into a single. Great Day! Hi all... still very, very busy here but as they say down south, I'm fixin' to get a batch of packages and thanks out of here in the next couple days. Special early thanks goes out to Steve Rittenberg, however, for demolishing my '58 Topps list among other things... more about that on the thanks server soon. My main reason for writing today was that I wanted to share something neat that happened this weekend with all of you... go get a refreshment if you want because this has turned into a long one! Between the new house and job, time and money have been incredibly tight. Nevertheless, being an unabashed baseball junkie, I'd scraped up enough change to treat my daughter, son and their friends to opening weekend for our Omaha Royals a couple weeks ago. My only disappointment in the weekend was knowing that it was likely going to be the only weekend for a month or two that we were going to be able to afford to watch our team. Imagine the joy then when I picked up our college announcements last week and read that the college had free tickets for the Royals all season long!! I rushed over and spoke with the admissions officer who handles the PR stuff too and he set me up with three tickets for each game on Friday through Monday! On Friday, I took my daughter (Sarah) and her best friend (Chelsea), along with my 6 yr old boy, Ben. The game was great and the kids each ended up with a baseball tossed to them by a player. The ball Ben got, however, was a little different, a little more meaningful. Let me explain... You all likely remember that Ben has a particular fondness for catchers and that my daughter, Sarah, has tainted his team interest toward the Toronto Blue Jays. Well, the team our Royals were playing this weekend was the Nashville Sounds, AAA affiliate for the Milwaukee Brewers. Normally this wouldn't be cause for too much excitement for us. Sure, I always enjoy seeing prospects and Ricky Weeks and Prince Fielder are sure to be on the front pages of our sports section soon. However, the team member that caught my eye on the Nashville roster was a bit older... MUCH older... in fact, dang near as old as me: journeyman catcher Pat Borders! Those of you who know your Blue Jays or World Series history remember him as the 1992 World Series MVP batting a hefty .450 and hitting a critical home run in game four. Those of you who follow the Olympics probably remember him as the man behind the plate when the 2000 Team USA won the gold medal in the Olympics, highlighted by a stellar 3-hit shutout by a young prospect, Ben Sheets. The rest of you probably remember him from the 15 or 20 games he's started for one of your teams (he's played for 10 different major league teams and more than a dozen minor league venues). At any rate, I was very excited to be able to point him out to my boy and tell him a little about him. Pat started the game and collected a single to left field in the 2nd and then followed it up with a home run in the 5th! The ball just barely cleared the wall, hit the bleacher in the 2nd row and bounced back onto the field. Left fielder Matt Diaz tossed the ball back to the clubhouse, where one of the Royals picked it up and handed it to Ben! Ben now owns a home run ball by Pat Borders! I told him that we'd have to come back later in the weekend to see if we oculdn't get Mr. Borders to autograph it. He was very excited, to say the least. What wasn't so exciting was when we opened Ben's backpack from school on Saturday and found a note home from his teacher reporting that he had supposedly been running his mouth off again about inappropriate topics. While he denies that he said anything wrong, he did admit to getting an inappropriate case of the giggles when confronted with the accusations by the teacher and that he had lied to us about having a "good day" in school on Friday. At any rate, it was clear that he wasn't going to be able to go with to the ballgame that night, much to his disappointment. I, however, did attend along with Sarah, Chelsea and Chelsea's younger sister, Shea. We had a great time but I was thinking about my boy most of the night. Ironically, Borders did not start on Saturday night, so he didn't miss anything in that regard. After the game was over on Saturday, the girls wanted to see if they could get one of the bats that Prince Fielder had shattered. As they headed over to the visitor's dugout, a teenage boy hustled in front of them and did get a bat of Fielder's. The girls started walking away but I asked the clubhouse attendent if there might be any shards of a bat left that I could bring to Ben. He replied that there was still one broken bat, but it was from Trent Durrington who had been kicked out of the game for inappropriately running his mouth to the ump in the 8th inning and that he'd have to check with Trent to see if it was alright. A moment later he came back with the bat. Thus another bit of irony -- Ben's first game-used bat came when he was grounded from a guy who got "grounded" by the ump. As you all know, Sunday was Mother's Day and so I offered to give my lovely wife, Jennie, some quiet time by taking the kids to the afternoon ballgame (so gracious, aren't I?!). As it turns out, Sarah had some homework and wasn't feeling particularly well but Jennie said she'd welcome the respite from Ben. Besides, there was still that little matter of trying to get his ball autographed by Pat Borders. When Ben and I took off for the game, it was a lovely day and remained so until the bottom of the 5th when the skies opened up. I asked Ben if he wanted to wait it out or just go home and he was adamant that we stay around for the game. I agreed, telling him that the rain would just get rid of the pretend fans and leave us real gamers to cheer the team on. Well, it took a little over an hour but the game did start again and frankly it's kind of fun to watch kids splashing around getting soaked in the rain, which Ben participated in fully! Soaked but happy, we settled in and watched the Sounds hold off a late rally by our Royals and preserve the win. While Pat Borders didn't get any big hits for the Sounds, something else happened during his at-bat in the top of the 8th... he broke his bat! When the game ended, bursting with anxiety, Ben and I rushed down to the edge of the visitor's clubhouse where #40, Brad Nelson, of the Sounds was standing. I told Brad that Ben had the home run ball that Borders hit on Friday night and we were wondering if we might be able to get the bat that had broken in the 8th. He looked at it and warned us that it was pretty busted up, but when we said we didn't care he handed it to Ben! Unbelievably, Ben now had Pat's home run ball AND the bat that had launched the little white orb! Now the only thing left was to see if we couldn't get an autograph and meet Mr. Borders. When we arrived at the tunnel leading out of the visitor's locker room, there was a small crowd of folks waiting there. Predictably, most were there for Weeks and Fielder, but there was one middle-age lady who had Sounds fan jersey on with a #10 and Borders hand written on the back, along with a real nice autograph from Pat. This lady, it turns out, must be the biggest Pat Borders fan in the world. She was from Des Moines, where the Sounds had just played the Iowa Cubs, so this was her 7th consecutive game watching Pat. She'd followed his career since 1991 and had seen and met him many, many times. She informed us that he is *always* the last one out of the locker room. Sure enough, she was right on. We waited, we played catch, we waited some more... played some more catch. And then we waited some more. Over an hour had passed and the only ones left at the stadium were the cleanup crew, the lady, Pat Borders and us. Finally.... finally.... he came out and started talking with the lady, who he does apparently know very well given the casualness of their conversation. Then he turned his attention to us and Ben showed him the home run ball and the bat! Pat laughed and affirmed that it was, indeed, the bat he'd used Friday night but "with a different stroke of course". He signed both items for Ben and a Blue Jays hat for Sarah and then graciously got down in a catcher stance and posed for a picture with a very weary but very happy little boy. I told him that Ben wants to be a catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays someday and he encouraged Ben to keep working hard at it and someday it might happen. With that, we thanked Pat profusely and let him get on his was to some well-deserved rest while we started for home a little wet, a little tired but with a memory and smile that will last us a lifetime. I feel a new collection coming on.... Ben's "have" or wantlist for Pat's card will appear on the UV server soon. :-) Take care and thanks for letting me share the story with you guys... Hi all... still very, very busy here but as they say down south, I'm fixin' to get a batch of packages and thanks out of here in the next couple days. He came running up to mom & I sitting in the bleachers on a sunny Sunday afternoon all excited and said "look daddy, I got a ball". He stuck out his skinny little 7 year old arm showing us a scuffed up carolina league ball. "How did you get it", I asked my excited youngster. Wes replied #30 gave it to me as he pointed to a guy walking across the field. "Wow, you should ask him to sign it for you" I added. With that suggestion, hetook off running like only a 7 year old can and catches #30 on the other side of the field and obtains his first autograph. Who was #30 you may ask?????? Johnny Damon! My Aunt Kay always used to say "Ach du Lieber!" which, I suppose, literally translated, means "Oh my dear!" I'm getting a lot of spam emails, mostly German, containing a link, along with one or two "Mail System Delivery Failure" notices indicating an attempt was made to send an email with a return address of wayne@deliafamily.net - I have a firewall at my end and I'm not actually sending any spam emails out as a result of a virus, but someone somewhere is sending German spam with my email as an origin. Oh well. Spam happens. General tips: If it's German, delete it - unless you have known German relatives who communicate with you in German, in which case you will know German well enough to avoid and delete any email ranting about World War II atrocities. Keep an eye open for any news about these types of spam in the online news; do a Google search on terms such as "German email spam Auchwitz etc.", and make sure to keep your anti-virus up to date; if you don't have an anti-virus, get one. The spam will ease up soon and will gradually disappear as this thing gets under control. Other fellas have made some suggestions about what to do with our email addresses on the web site. There are a couple of things I can do to help. Our service contract allows for use of a database manager called MySql, which works with a scripting programming language called PHP to dynamically create web page content. We can identify our web pages using email addresses and store the email addresses in a database on the web site. Web 'bots searching for email addresses won't be able to locate ours if they are stored in the database, because the pages are dynamically created and only exist in the user's browser at the time of browsing, rather than exist on the web site as a static HTML file . I'll do a search to see how many pages are affected. Probably not too many. Did anyone understand any of that? On a completely unrelated topic, I have no idea why I am not invited to parties any more. I thought "geek is sexy" these days, evidently not. The net bottom line is we can mask and disguise our email addresses on the web site with very little effort. But the problem may not lie with the emails on the website, rather it's probably with the email addresses in an address book on somebody's PC which got infected with a virus. Hard to say at this point, but some of the "geek gods," the "hero hackers," the smart boys working on the side of good instead of evil, will figure this out in the next couple of days along with a procedure on removing it. As some of you know last summer my family up and moved from Georgia to Vermont. My wife got her dream job, and I was unemployed anyway due to some health problems. So we decided to take the plunge. We really like it up here. Kinda' cold (compared to Georgia) but if you dress for it, it's not too bad. We are renting a nice little house in the woods, so it's nice and peaceful with lots of wildlife around the house plus we have a small vegetable garden. As for me, I'm still unemployed (about two years now) and still battling some non-life-threatening health problems. I suffer from chronic and migraine headaches, as well as chronic gastrointestinal problems. These health problems have really impacted my life. More so than I would ever have imagined. I've been seeing many doctors, and although I now understand the health conditions I am faced with, it doesn't always make it easy for someone like me who used to be so healthy (lesson being, don't take your health for granted!!) My health problems make it difficult for me to find a job because on average I have maybe 3 decent days a week. The other days I either feel bad and/or have to take medicines that have significant side-effects. And up here there are not too many jobs to begin with (rural Vermont and all). Also, I'm wanting to change careers. I was at a fairly high level in the IT field (computer networking/network security) before having to quit because my health problems were significantly impacting my work. Bottom-line, changing careers with health problems that interfere with my everyday life (and being in a very small job market) makes it kinda tough to find work. I'm hoping to eventually find something part-time, maybe at one of the two colleges near here, or in K-12 education, or with a non-profit. I'd really like to work some place where I feel like I'm helping someone, especially kids. On the positive side, I'm a stay at home father who finally is getting to know my 8 year old daughter. I never got to see Sarah much when I was working in IT. So being with her and taking care of her has been wonderful. And I hope she thinks so too :) Now to the baseball cards part. Some of you may have noticed that I started selling baseball cards, among many other things, on eBay. Of course I am selling *nothing* that I received via OBC. All baseball cards I have sold are cards/sets that I purchased either as a kid, pre-OBC, or cards I purchased during my OBC tenure that I bought as investmetns or to help fill gaps in my sets (mostly hofers, stars, and hi #'s). It simply came down to, I had to make some money to help pay bills. And selling some of my baseball cards and other stuff via eBay was about my only option up to this point. That being said, during the winter I sold two of my sets that I completed as a kid (my 1971 and 1972 Topps sets). Both sets were in great condition, thus had some value. It was a tough decision, but I really needed the money. I am now regretting that decisiion however. Particularly that I did not pull the 1971 and 1972 SF Giants cards from those sets. I lived in SF in 1971 and part of 1972, so I used to go to Candlestick Park to watch the Giants play. Also, I am currently selling my partial 1970 Topps set. It too is one I collected as a kid. However, this time, I have pulled most of the SF Giants cards that I wanted, and had, before starting to sell. The reason I'm letting you know about the 1970 Topps set is because it was one of the sets on my OBC wantlist at one time. I have just pulled all the cards I received from OBC and wish to return them to my OBC brethen. My problem is, I do not know who sent which 1970 Topps cards. My thought was that I could put them out as availables with people I owe getting first dibs. I hope no one in OBC thinks less of me for returning cards in this manner, but I'm not sure how else to do it, unless someone can remember that they sent me a particular card(s). In which case I will return it. Any suggestions are welcome. Believe me, I would not be selling off part of my collection if I didn't need the money. This is not an easy thing for me to do. I am also selling other sentimental things like my Strat-O-Matic and APBA cards, old LP's, old radios and equipment, magazines, vintage guitar equipment, etc. I am trying to lighten my load before our next move (we'll eventually buy a house, I hope), and, because I need to help pay bills, etc. Anyway, please email me if you know you sent me any 1970 Topps cards. Also, if you have any comments/feedback re: me returning these cards to OBC, please LMK. Lastly, I wanted to let you all know that I am anxious to get back to being more active in OBC as far as sending cards. I have been rather slow in that dept. lately. For that, I apologise. I am mailing some packages today, and will be mailing some more later this week. These packages are for those that I owe (I do keep a list). If I owe you and you don't get anything, it's only because I can't hit your list right now (because I currently don't have any cards from your list). PS: I do have one last request. If someone happens to have a spare 71T #224, 72T #693, or 72T #694 Alan Gallagher, a spare 71T #108 or 72T #403 John Cumberland, and a spare 72T #366 Jim Rosario I'd like to trade with you. I've recently re-discovered my Strat-O-Matic baseball game and I'm going to try to replay the 1971 SF Giants season. I was wanting to have a 70's Topps card of each SF Giants player that SOM made cards for. Gallagher, Cumberland, and Rosario are the only cards I couldn't find a 70's card of (because I sold my 71 and 72 Topps sets). Also, if there are any OBC SOM players out there that happen to have the 1971 SOM roster of additional players, I'd like to talk to you. I'd like to know what players were the additional Giants that SOM printed that year. Jerry Coker Yahoo! Mail Stay connected, organized, and protected. Over the years, he wrote letters to baseball players, and asked them each a single question, and lots responded, big names and small. A welcome and successful addition to the ribfest was the "last first annual" wine tasting. Lori Hair, my sister-in-law, brought a wide variety of wines for tasting and we found more culture than you may think in the OBC. As a compliment to the wine and ribs, Peter and Denise Iversen supplied the best strawberries in the history of the Vegas eVents. Also at the festivities was the choosing of teams for the annual golf tournament. As a twist (of course) each participant was given a sealed envelope with a hole number inside. Four hard holes and four easy holes. Although we played a scramble format, the player who held an envelope would have to hit the lone tee shot on his hole, without the help of his teammates. Not a daunting task on a few of the easy holes, but not a situation you may want to be in on, say (foreshadowing) number 8 or , it goes without saying, number 18. Of course, it must be noted that the tournament committee has a heart. Therefore, each participant could buy his way out of the situation for a mere $5 which would go to the John Ball Fund. All except George Hay opted for the buyout, with George drawing the ever dangerous number 8, a tough to hit par 3 with trouble all around. The selection of teams resulted in Team one (self proclaimed "team Won") with team captain Richard Ellison (the junior) and Larry Gershback, George Hay, and Georgie Calvert and Team two (Team Too) with Greg Hair (the brother), Joe Cerullo, Todd Knowles and Ken Morganti. The festivities ended with some baseball autographing and more wine tasting. ( ok, in reality by this time it wasn't just tasting, it was full on drinking). The group proceeded to the Railroad Pass Casino with a true Capt'n Craps, my brother Greg who is a former craps dealer and floorman at the Palms. Evidently the Pass had heard of our plan, as the craps table was closed because the crew was allegedly sick....a case of the "we are the OBC and we come in peace" flu, no doubt. Undaunted, Greg offered to run the table but was politely refused by Hank, the floorman. Since we were already there, (well most of us were... Margaret had become lost twice in the short drive between Fuerte Court and the casino) we sat down at a blackjack table with our dealer who informed us it was her first night and she hadn't gone to dealer school. When I asked her what she had been doing a week ago she told us that she was selling pool supplies in Ohio. With some help from Greg telling her which hand to pay with and which hand to collect the used cards, she did an admirable job, and along the way the Hairboys obtained four of the five black chips that Railroad Pass owns. After a trip to the cashier the team reconvened for a shot at becoming millionaires. An old Holy Cow tradition was revived as seven of us pooled our resources in quest of the $13 million Mega Bucks jackpot. Despite our novel ways for pushing the buttons, Mega Bucks overcame our efforts and we were sent home to prepare for our next Day activities. Saturday's forecast was for temperature above 100, and a promise of an even hotter golf competition. The venue for the excuse breakfast was moved at the last minute, with the group arriving on time (PDT) and Greg arriving on time (Greg's World Time or GWT). In a way it's a shame that this is the last eVent, as the excuses at the breakfast have gone from (unsubstantiated) claims of mulch elbow and yogurt shoulder to the present day doctor's letters, x-rays, claims of other peoples body parts, and outright bribe attempts ( I can't be bought, however if you want to talk about renting or a long term lease,,,) and touching human interest stories vying for the elusive strokes. Despite the great effort, alas, no strokes were granted, and we proceeded to the golf The golf competition was fierce as the two teams competed for the final chance a win. As we had nine people, I set this one out and went between the foresomes as a consultant, scorekeeper and reporter. The match was back and forth during the front nine, and George Hay performed well on the treacherous number eight. Both teams played very well, Team Won scrambling from all over the course, and Team Too probably hitting some better shots, but not converting on the chances they had. Team Won opened a one shot lead early on the back nine and nursed in through with a gutty performance. They were feeling good about their chances as they had the one shot lead and also knew that they had the tie-breaker (which if enforced would have resulted in a cry for and asterisk). They were feeling even better after Richard hit it close on 17, and Team Too recorded a bogey to give Team Won a two shot lead with only the treacherous 18th to play. Side note here: if you watch the A&E biographies the first 30 to 40 minutes of the show are telling all the good things about the person and how good life is. Then, as they go to the commercial the announcer usually says "and then things went terrible wrong". So was it with Team One. After an average drive, the team hit a layup shot within 100 yards of the green. Of course, 90 of those yards are over a lake, and they were standing in the fabled spot where Joel Glickman's, tee shot ended up off of number 10 at V97.5. Still, with a two shot lead, they had four chances to put a ball on the green and two putt for the win. They however, decided to take another route and recorded an triple bogey 7 on the hole. Maybe it was the pressure or maybe it was fate...eVent history shows, more often than not. a Hair in on the winning team, and an Ellison is not. Renewed by dodging the bullet, Team Too hit their first shot to the garden spot, where Team One laid (albeit 3) moments earlier. Now, on any other day, a 100 yard chip shot is an easy shot to hit, but with so much on the line, it becomes a bit harder. Tiger Woods would hit a flip wedge, most golfers would hit a wedge or 9 iron, but Joe Cerullo defied convention and gave Team Too the break they needed with a patented 5 wood flip shot. Team Too came form 2 shots back to take a two shot victory. As last year put Rick Ellison (the senior) in the winners circle (*) for the first time, Ken Morganti who has endured the Rookie Shoes and numerous fu-fu drinks in his quest for a victory became a winner for the first time. After the golf it was off to the District to meet up with the rest of the group at the Elephant Bar for a great meal hosted by the Iversens. The district is a unique development that has restaurants, condos and shopping in a main street type theme. Perhaps Peter and Denise found a shop that sold watches during their visit. After a great lunch there was some free time before the ballgame. The Joe Cerullo hosted game had two sets of fireworks,,, one in the third inning after Edwin (the hope) Jackson hit a batter after the previous two had taken him deep and a scheduled one after the game. Today (Sunday) it's off to a Joshua Levine hosted card shop tour and the Geordie Calvert hosted (Real) Closing Ceremonies at Hooters. Pacific Daylight Time, Originaleek@webtv.net writes: My question is: if that was just an update is the FULL report yet to come? What was going to be a brief update turned into quite a ramble, so I imagine there will not be a FULL update, although I just got back from the Sunday activities and will sent an additional update soon. Rest well, ================= Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 23:20:15 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, Glk@aol.com From: topgolf@aol.com Subject: V05: on the seventh day... Sunday brings a sort of calm to the eVent scene. Unlike Friday with travel and an early start time for the tour de V05, and Saturday with an early start for the excuse breakfast, the first scheduled eVent on Sunday is the Josh Levine card shop tour, with the later starting time of 10 am. Our numbers had dwindled at this point , as Gersh had caught a red eye Saturday night, and The Hays were preparing for a midday flight. I showed up a bit after 10 at Baseball Card Heaven to find the core group of Peter, Josh, Todd, Ken, Joe and Geordie attacking the boxes along with a couple of young kids who were more interested in the price of cards than any memories they may have. After finding a few high number 62s for my dormant wantlist, I took Ken Morganti to one of nicer luggage stores in town to purchase new luggage to transport his new cards and auction holdings back to the east coast. We then went to check him out of his hotel and found that Mr. Morganti indeed travels light. Our next stop was at Hooters for closing ceremonies. We joined back up with the group from the card shop and the welcome addition of Denise Iversen. The group was smaller than expected as the Ellison clan didn't make it, but we were seated in the traditional back room. Joe's fatherly ways immediately attracted the attention of our Hooter's Girl, who took great care of us, even putting on a private showing of her original artwork.( As strange as that last sentence sounds, it's exactly what happened). Once we stopped the bleeding, we had the traditional order of much food and drink and reminisced about past eVents and past participants. We then played a Vegas version of Survivor, the results of which can be summed up in the phrase "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". After the food and a Morganti desert (compliments of Geordie Calvert), we had our picture taken with the Hooter's Girls and said our goodbyes for the final time. It was a special time for me as our final gathering was with a core group that completely understands the spirit in which the Vegas eVents were started and have grown over the years. Which brings us to the awkward closing to this post. The Vegas eVents have come to an end after 10 years. I want to thank all who have come to an eVent, somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 members I would imagine.. I would try to name them all , but I'm sure I would miss someone along the way. It's been 10 great years of my life, however I am moving in a different direction in the next few years and have a few challenges to meet that will require my attention and not allow me to organize the eVent in the way that I have in the past. While some will try to chalk this up to the old vs. new member argument, it is not the case. While I sometimes long for the old days, I fully realize the progress and changed that the OBC is going through. I was introduced to OBC at time in my life when I truly needed a good dose of fellowship. It was those friendships and support that helped me through a very tough part of my life and I realize that, like cards, I have received more that I have ever given in the OBC. I spent my time on the AC and as facilitator and hope that I gave something back in those capacities. For those who always wanted to come but never made it, I apologize and hope that the group in general will carry on the spirit of fellowship that has come from these eVents. If I have offended (and I know I have) anyone, I sincerely apologize and can only offer the excuse of trying to organize an eVent for a number of people and forgetting the needs of some. I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Cindy, for her help in putting on these eVents, even at times of great loss with the illness and passing of both of her parents. I would like to thank those who came to a number of the eVents and especially those who took over some of the responsibilities this year...it was a great help that allowed me to enjoy this one more than any of the others. A special thanks to the Hays who, along with Margaret Kramer (Ellison), made it every year (*) and to all those who have supplied the many memories that will make up the lore of a yearly special time in Vegas. and with that... Ladies and Gentlemen...Elvis has left the building....... We then went to check him out of his hotel and found that Mr. Morganti indeed travels Our next stop was at Hooters for closing ceremonies. We joined back up with the group from the card shop and the welcome addition of Denise Iversen. The group was smaller than expected as the Ellison clan didn't make it, but we were seated in the traditional back room. Joe's fatherly ways immediately attracted the attention of our Hooter's Girl, who took great care of us, even putting on a private showing of her original artwork.( As strange asthat last sentence sounds, it's exactly what happened). Once we stopped the bleeding, we had the traditional order of much food and drink and reminisced about past eVents and past participants. We then played a Vegas versionof Survivor, the results of which can be summed up in the phrase "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". While I sometimes long for the old days,I fully realize the progress and changed that the OBC is going through. I was introduced to OBC at time in my life when I truly needed a good dose offellowship. I would like to thank my wonderful wife, Cindy, for her help in putting on these eVents, even at times of great loss with the illness and passing of both of herparents. I would like to thank those who came to a number of the eVents and especially those who took over some of the responsibilities this year...it was a great help that allowed me to enjoy this one more than any of the others. A special thanks to the Hays who, along with Margaret Kramer (Ellison), made it every year (*) and to all those who have supplied the many memories that will make up the lore of a yearly special time in Vegas. and with Ladies and Gentlemen...Elvis has left the building....... Drove straight in from work and made great time for once. Arrived in Vegas around 11 pm...checked into hotel, showered and went to play Blackjack. Sat down at a table with new dealer friend Susie. Played for nearly three hours and won nearly $300...at some point a lady sat down next to me and played about 10 hands (won nearly every one) and then stood up and cashed in saying that she had to go because she left her kid asleep in the car seat! Yep...as a teacher, I almost had a fit. Addiction is a horrible thing. Woke up early the next day and promptly lost $100 playing slots. Headed over to the Sahara to find the guys and found Geordie and Joe at a blackjack table...lost $100 there too. Ken and Todd soon arrived fresh from a hold 'em tournament. In order not to lose more money, Geordie, Todd and I decided to hit two local card shops in the hopes of making some hits to the old wantlist. First shop was the one we have gone to every year. Not alot there (although Todd did buy a great '50s large pennant featuring Ted Williams for a very good price). Geordie and I each gambled and bought a box of garbage (anybody need a '87 Topps Oil Can Boyd, contact Geordie--somehow I left them in his truck:-). The second shop gave Geordie a $5 '33 Goudey Dodger and myself 37 Redman in Tipton condition for a buck apiece including HOFers. Back to the Sahara to pick up Joe and off we went to Mike's for the BBQ...when we arrived we were presented with very official looking gift bags that included some nice stuff including a ball, sharpie, new OBC vegas t-shirt, lifestrong bracelet, cofee from Mike D. (yumm)., and an envelope for golf seeding. The BBQ was fantastic including Mike's famous ribs, Cindy's famous salads, Peter's famous strawberries, and a new tradition that included wine tasting of some pretty good wines. In attendance were Mike and Cindy Hair, George and Lucy Hay, Margaret Kramer-Ellison and her son, Richard, daughter, Cyrstal and friend Pat, Mike's brother and wife (both names escape me), Peter and Denise Iverson, Geordie, Todd, Larry G., Joe C. and Ken. Sorry if I missed anyone. A great time was had by all... Off to Railroad Pass where a week before someone won a Million $s on a penny slot. Most people lost money but I cam out $3 ahead after pitching in to try Megabucks. Back to my hotel and Susie. Spent time with her at the blackjack table again and this time she was not that good to me, after about an hour of up and down, I went way down to the tune of $200. Oh well. Saturday, woke up early and hit another couple of shops and managed to find a '59 Campy tribute card and 7 '55 Bowman for $35. Not bad but not great. Then off to lunch at Elephant bar. Fun with the gang and said some goodbyes to George, Lucy, and Larry G. Ran next door to Green Valley Ranch Casino to watch horse race and lost all my bets. Back to my hotel, rested for an hour, then off to the game, Las Vegas Area 51s hosting the Albequerque Isotopes. HOT. Vegas is HOT. REALLY HOT. Glad I sat next to Crystal who fanned me each inning and we split an icee. I was the only one getting fanned as the Dodger's best future pitching prospect was horrible. After giving up back to back homeruns (the second was at least 450 feet--no joke--went out over the 433 ft. sign in dead center) he hit the next batter and was tossed. Then a small fracas occured and an Isotopes player was ejected as well. The '51s got creamed but all was forgiven after a great fireworks Back to hotel and Susie...up about $50 until some college idiots sat down and started playing, lost $75 before I stood up in disgust (along with the guy who had taken out a $6000 marker and lost nearly half of it because the guy after him hit his 15 with a dealer six showing and busted himself and allowed the dealer to draw to a 20 which beat the rest of us). Told her I would be back after they left. Lost at slots and came back to table and Susie...won about $150 and left to get some sleep. Sunday...up early, checked out of room, grabbed some breakfast and lost my shirt at a single deck 21 table. Off to card shop which opened early for us. I think everyone who came managed to find at least one card. I ended up with a t-206, a very nice '63 and '62 Phillie high numbers. All for a great $30 price Off to Hooters...the wings were great as was the company...lots of laughter...I had to get on the road so I missed the picture with the Hooter girl (sad about that---will have to visit the resturaunt in Sept. and paste my picture up there with the boys). She was multi-talented (really)...that girl could paint! Seriously...with brushes and paint. Impressive. I am also sad that I missed Sunday night as the group was going to one of my all time favorite resturaunts....Battista's Hole in the Wall...fantastic Italian food. On the way home, the "Tallest Thermometer in the World" read 111 degrees!! As endings (?) go, this was great. Thanks again to Mike and Cyndi for being a great BBQ host, thanks to Todd and George and Lucy for the friendship and the drinks, thanks to Geordie for treating us to Hooters food, thanks to Peter and Denise for strawberries and knowing who Maddy Peyroux is, thanks to Ken for running the Ball auction and being a good friend, and thanks to Joe for his knowledge of cards, friendship, and sense of humor (which is very similar to mine). Good seeing Larry again and meeting Mike's brother and his wife. Thanks to Crystal for the cool breezes and laughs and Margaret, Richard, and Melissa for being there even when Rick wasn't. If I missed anyone I am sorry... As usual, this trip was wonderful. the end* ================= To: Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 15:02:23 -0700 From: "Geordie Calvert" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Unofficial Veags Report <<< Subject: Subject: What's your favorite baseball book? Some may be out of print - Also there is a novel about Christy Matthewson called THE CELEBRANT that is pretty wonderful - I picked it up through Amazon for about 10 dollars. A few have already recapped the eVents, so I will try not to make this a long drawn out ramble and go back over some of that... well, I'll TRY anyway My trip started out in New Hampshire at my parent's house. I had been meaning to catch up with them for a few weeks, but work and other outside activities didn't allow time for that. I took the night off before my trip to fix that, even though my flight from Boston wasn't until later in the day. Woke up early Thursday, had breakfast, and headed back home to pack (at the last minute as usual). Took my one carry on bag to the bus stop and jumped on the 'T' which took me to the airport. My flight was rerouted through Atlanta, since there was a lot of flight delays through Cincinnati, where I was scheduled to connect. This changed my flight time to twenty minutes earlier and they were announcing my name for final boarding call as I made the terminal. The trip was uneventful and I got to my room in Harrah's just before the stroke of midnight local time. Got unpacked and headed right down to the tables. Most of Friday morning was a blur, although I recall it involved losing quite a bit of money. Right around 9 AM, I decided to try another casino to change my luck, which up to this point was all bad. Went back up to the room and discovered that there was free wireless internet in my room (one of the few strokes of good luck). I checked my e-mail and did some research on the Las Vegas monorail. This was still in a testing period when I was here last year, when they couldn't get it to run for 30 straight days without an incident before allowing people to ride it. I got a three day unlimited pass, which I was later told was a REAL gamble, since the system still isn't known for it's Took the monorail over to the Sahara, where most of the group was staying. Walked over to the poker room and found Todd and Joe Cerullo playing holdem. I sat in and had some decent luck, winning almost enough to pay for the tournament that Todd and I both entered. Also knocked Joe off the table, which proved to be rather fortunate for him since I later learned that he hit a slot machine soon after for big money. The tourney didn't go so well. I had some good hands near the very start, but those dried up and I was eliminated shortly after the first break. Met up with Geordie, Todd, Joe and Josh. We piled into Geordie's car and headed to Mike Hair's famous Ribfest. Along with my goodie bag containing a T-shirt, baseball and other treasures, Mike presented me with a monster box filled with auction donations and a binder with a complete 1971 topps set. WOW! It'll take me a few days just to sort it all out before I start the auction. Mike apparently saved his best ribs for the last Ribfest, as I polished off a baker's dozen that just fell off the bone. The strawberries were excellent as well. I didn't participate in the wine tasting/drinking, as that would be similar to putting a tuxedo on a chimp... "Yeah, this one tastes like wine too." Plus, I usually don't drink all that much and needed to remain conscious for more gambling at Railroad Pass. When we walked into Railroad Pass, the craps table was closed, so I sat down at a blackjack table and promptly lost about fifteen hands in a row without so much as a tie. I spent the next couple hours at the slot machines trying to recoup my losses from that and had some success. Turned a single quarter into about $30 with a single hand of video poker and cashed out with some extra money that ended up going towards our Megabucks attempt. Apparently the machine doesn't care how original you get pushing the button to spin the reels, since we almost got shut out in our effort. In keeping with tradition, we left the $13 million jackpot to be won another day. The golf tournament was early in the morning, so we headed back to our respective hotels and at about midnight on Friday I set my alarm for 6 AM and being awake for every minute of Friday, I finally took a nap. Woke up well before the alarm went off (who knew that losing money could be so exciting?), took a shower and headed downstairs for some more gambling. Played three card poker with two other sleepless people and had a nice run of a dozen hands or so that left the first guy up about $400 and me in the black for $225. Cashed out and headed outside to meet up with Geordie, who couldn't have time his arrival much better - I didn't even wait 30 seconds before he pulled up. After using some of our navigational skills apparently acquired from St. Al, we arrived at the site for the traditional excuse breakfast. Despite having a notarized doctor's note complete with x-rays detailing my very painful ailment known as 'hyperslicenhook syndrome', I was still unable to get any strokes awarded to my team. The golf tournament started off well, with my very first swing sailing a good ways right down the middle of the fairway. Unfortunately, duplicating it proved difficult if not impossible and I had to settle for a couple decent chip shots to help my team the rest of the way. Things looked bleak for our team headed into the last hole, but the other team needed the Heimlich Maneuver on the 18th and I found myself in the winner's circle for the first* time. Our celebration was moved to the Elephant Bar and Grill, where I found a suitable replacement for my traditional foo-foo drink and a tasty meal to go along with it. Despite rumors to the contrary, I couldn't find the elephant burger on the menu, so I opted for a good sized shrimp and rice dish. Next on the official (as it gets) schedule was the baseball game. Took a couple monorail rides to Harrah's and back, so I could drop off my golf equipment and stuff. Then met up with the gang back at the Sahara and we headed for the baseball stadium. Golfing out in the 100+ degree temperatures was draining. With the Isotopes beating up on the 51's and the Sandman beating up on me, I found myself starting to nod off during the later innings, but managed to stay awake for the great fireworks display after the game was mercifully concluded. On the way back to the hotel, Rick's daughter Crystal tried to convince Geordie to pull into the drive though wedding place and marry me. It seemed like a pretty good idea (she said she didn't even want half of my cards), but having Rick as my father-in-law proved to be a deal breaker ;-) Got back to the room and more than doubled my sleep total by logging in almost five hours. Still haven't reached double digits yet, however. Went back down for more punishment at the tables and finally took the monorail over to the Sahara at 10 o'clock. I was supposed to get there at quarter of ten, but somehow decided that quarter past ten was the scheduled meeting time... must've been lack of sleep. Anyway, we proceeded to the shop without too much protest from everyone who was waiting on me. We met up with Josh, who surprisingly hadn't scooped up all the best deals before our late arrival. Mike Hair showed up as we were rummaging through the boxes and binders in the shop. I bought a stack of Kellogg's cards (mostly 70 and 71's) that yielded a number of hits and upgrades to my sets. I pulled Mike away from the store after we were both done looking and he helped me check out of the hotel in the nick of time. We had to stop by the local Target first, so I could get some extra luggage for all the auction donations and V05 memorabilia I had picked up. We took the long way around to Hooters for the final last closing ceremonies. The food was good and the view was excellent as well. After dessert and a photo, most of us headed back to the Sahara to kill some time gambling before dinner at Battista's Hole in the Wall. This was an excellent Italian restaurant that I should probably visit again someday when I'm not still stuffed from popcorn shrimp and dessert from Hooter's. I barely ate half of my hearty portion of ravioli before I was about to burst and sadly out of time. My plane was due to leave at 10 PM, so after a few more good-byes, Geordie drove me out to the airport. I got to the gate with some time before the boarding call, so I took one last crack at the slots. I won $7.50, which was like throwing a brick into the Grand Canyon, but at least I left on a winning note. The plane was packed and the AC didn't work, at least until the plane started it's engine and then it was only barely noticeable. As the lights of Vegas grew dim outside my window seat for what may be the last time, I finally drifted off to sleep...
