================= To: "OBC Ramblings" Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2005 23:14:47 +0100 From: "Glenn Codere" Subject: My take on things I’ve been slow in responding to recent events, not for lack of interest or opinion but simply because I’ve been taking my time in allowing my thoughts to come together. I apologise for potentially opening up the debate again, as a certain modicum of normality seems to have returned to the servers these past 2 days. First off, I’ll state right up front that I cannot condone what Doug has done. I’ve read the charge sheet and the Statement of Fact that appears on the web, both documents signed by Doug and his solicitor. There has been some talk of us not discussing things until we’ve heard all the facts. Unfortunately, due to the fact that a guilty plea has been entered, I believe that all the information we have now is all that we will get. The case doesn’t go to trial, and we will not hear any arguments in Doug’s defence, if any exist. Therefore, the info that we have at the moment is what we must base our opinions on. One point I would like to make is on the subject of abuse. A few posts by OBCers alluded to abuse, or rather the potential for someone who views and distributes child pornography to gravitate in that direction. Trips was quick to jump to Doug’s defence on that point, noting quite correctly that Doug had not been charged with this particular crime, and that no evidence linking him to actual physical abuse existed. While that may be true, I feel the need to point out that those persons who create a market for child pornography by aiding in its distribution, while perhaps not personally taking part in abuse, fuel the need for others to continue to do so. I would still call that a form of abuse by extension. No doubt the sentence given to Doug will reflect his previous good character. On the other hand, the relatively high profile of this case may result in a fairly harsh sentence being meted out in an effort to “make an example” of someone in Doug’s position. I’m fairly sure that he understands the severity of his crime and deeply regrets ever having gotten involved in such actions, however the price for his indiscretion – whatever that may turn out to be - must be paid. I’m no expert on the US legal system, but I’m led to believe that this is a federal charge which carries a MINIMUM 5 year jail sentence (I’m open to being corrected on these points). With that in mind, and without condoning the crime, I do feel sympathy for Doug and the situation that he finds himself in. More so, however, I feel greatly for Judy, who must be going through an incredibly rough time amidst all this. I know that she has a great many friends among OBCers and their families, and I’m sure that some support from that avenue is most likely already I have to admit that I worry greatly for Doug’s mental and physical well being over the months and years to come. It’s my understanding that US federal prisons are incredibly harsh environments, in which prisoners who have been charged with crimes involving children can expect a particularly hard time from both the regime and other prisoners. I sincerely hope that Doug has the fortitude to come through this experience. So the question remains as to what to do concerning Doug’s OBC membership. While it’s obviously not the primary concern on his mind at the moment, I kind of wish Doug himself would tender his own resignation from the group, freeing up the OBCAC from having to take a very difficult decision which will, as Geno has already pointed out, will no doubt result in some people regrettably choosing to quit – no matter what they decide. Personally, I feel that if the OBCAC have to make a decision, it should be to terminate Doug’s membership at this point, but not to expel him for life. Once he has served the time for his crime, he can if he wishes apply to rejoin. I know that there have been some post pointing out that if we do this, where do we draw the line as far as expulsions for criminal activity are concerned? In my opinion, I can easily live with judging any future such decisions on their merit, making my thoughts known via this forum, and leaving a final decision to the OBCAC. One last point I’d like to make is that one can’t help but feel that if this had happened to someone who had joined OBC in recent years, we wouldn’t even be debating his fate. He’d be blackballed immediately. Doug’s tenure in OBC and his longstanding friendships with members simply makes this decision all the more difficult. I’m confident that the OBCAC will take all of the opinions expressed into account, and will make a decision that they feel best reflects the will of the majority of the membership. I for one will stand by that decision. If I disagree strongly with the decision that is made, the chance to voice my displeasure will come with the next election. As has already been stated many times, this is yet another bump in the road for OBC – more of a pothole, really – but we’ve gotten past them before, and we will again. I like everyone else was shocked about the news of Doug Smith. I, too, read the article that was on the internet. I have known Doug since I went on a road trip to Texas for a show at Arlington in 1992. We shared rooms for the National. I have never met a nicer person or more knowledgable person of baseball cards in general. I don't condone his activities but when you have addictions you can't control With our great judicial system. he will get his due. Otherwise, his personal life will be a mess for a while especially with his family as well as his financial future. As life goes on we must learn to forgive because it makes one a better person. If you don't let it go. it makes a person bitter and life is tough enough if one does not know how to forgive. Well enough on my philosophy. We had a little time to walk around and mingle. A few dealers remembered Howard from the last show. I was more concerned with finding hits to his list. We didn't find much for him so more effort/patience is required on my part. I had some luck at the show but not as much as usual. I finished my Freedom's War set (decimated by Mark Talbot and leaving me with just one card) and my Empire Strikes Back set. I got good buys on a few other things but didnt end up with nearly as much as usual. After the show we went to a nearby restuarant for dinner. Between eating crab cakes in a sea of melted butter, salmon + cheeseburgers, we talked about everything and everyone we had in common. When we got back to Howard's place, I was shown the vault. Its actually a closet but "vault" sounds better. In a built in bedroom closet, Howard has more albums than the shelves can hold. The wooden shelves are sagging under the weight! He showed me some of his non-sport treasures. One of them was a huge (1500 card) collection of 19th century non-sport that had been pasted into an album. For some strange reason, the owner had removed the back from nearly every card. But the fronts, for the most part, were beautiful. Howard seems to have a knack for meeting people who are either disposing of their cards or of an estate and he buys 'em out. Thats how he got this one and a few other things. Just amazing. Howard brought out a few things for me to take home -- a nice pile of 47-66 exhibits and the Topps Red Sox commemorative set. I let him help himself to my non-sports dupes and whatever I had bought at the show but I still owe him. Later, he showed me a bit of his baseball library. I think if you've heard of the book, then he owns it! And he showed me some pack fresh 58s and his trade ammo. Yikes! I meekly accept a beautiful 41 Double Play of Grove/Doerr in exchange for a couple of Caramel cards of boxers Howard liked. My visit ended too soon but my appetite has been whetted for the next time I see Howard. ================= Date: Sat, 2 Apr 2005 13:33:10 EST To: OBC-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Subject: Card shop trip Hi gang, Stopped by the post office this afternoon to mail out an eBay payment and a small package of UV cards (for no one in this group, don't worry ). The local card shop is right arounfd the corner from the PO, so I decided to stop in. Usually the prices are extraordinarily high - taken from the Buckett before the ink is even dry on the pages. Of course, they're discounted for condition... so a poor card is roughly half book. Well, a friend of mine had tipped me off earlier in the week about a '55 Topps Aaron that was priced $15. "I put it in the middle of the stack, so no one else would see it right away." Aparently no one did, as it was still there a week later. I guess no one in the city likes vintage cards... at least at full Buckett. The shop owner was out at a local show, so I didn't expect much of a discount from his helper on the Aaron or the other stars he pulled that were less than VG ('60 Kaline, '64 Spahn, '65 Brooks and a '57 Mathews all at $5 each.) I did get the chance to look through some of the older cards that were strewn about the shop. The first pile I picked up had some 67's in it - including an Ed Spiezio variation. "That'll be free." "OK, Can I look through some older commons boxes... like 1968?" "Sure." So he hands me a monster box filled with commons and a few stars from 1958-1976 or so. The first card I looked for was the elusive Mike McCormick. Alas, it's still very elusive. I did find a 58 yellow letter Ennis and a '69 white letter Marshall along with a '73 Buddy Bell with the broken border. "We'll just throw all those in too. That'll be $40." I ended up with a few more cards and spending a bit more than I expected, but I think I came out all right in the end So, anyone looking for a cheap '55 Aaron? I sent out the Ramble that I expect to be leaving my job shortly (due to the firm not able to bring in the level of work they expected and therefore want me to take a cut in compensation of approximately 40% from what was proposed when they hired me) and taking a tour of North America this year. They have asked me to wait until at least April 11, to determine my last day. Meanwhile there have some proposals from the company for a new compensation package to keep me. So far, these are still unacceptable, so the trip still appears to be on. To make things more interesting at the office, my top assistant turned in her 1 week notice yesterday. It was not an April Fools joke. She was a decent worker, but one of the most unpleasant people I have ever had to work with, so I have mixed emotions. The biggest problem, is that when I leave, I want things taken care of as much as possible for my customers. There is a lot of work to complete before I will feel comfortable leaving. It makes it hard to hire a replacement though, if I know I am leaving. I do not want to hire someone away from a job they have, to a company/division that will probably close its doors when I leave. That would not be fair to them. Meanwhile, if I do not hire more staff, I cannot get the work done. Very bad situation. I am one of the new members of OBCAC, as well as a friend of Doug Smith's. We just went out to dinner a couple of months ago when he was in the Detroit area. So I need not tell you, this has been a most difficult time for me. I also have been the caretaker of the family cat for the last couple of years. She got very ill a couple of weeks ago. We almost put her to sleep. A PCL collection worth of vet bills later and I still do not know if she will be OK or not. (I was going to buy a collection of PCL cards, until I found out that I would not be getting any bonus for 2004. The Vet bill was almost exactly the cost of the PCL collection I turned down.) Still quite ill. Her equilibrium or strength is way off, so she is constantly falling over after a few steps. She has fallen off the couch a couple of times, on the rare occassin she is able to climb up there. Not to mention having trouble holding down food and missing her litter box on multiple occassions (which is now in the kitchen so she does not have to walk downstairs). So cleaning up after the cat is turning into a daily On what some would coonsider to be an ironic note, I am in a small real estate LLC. We bought some property 2 years ago, and started developing the property. Last year we sold 2 of the 6 units, and used the proceeds to pay down most of our bank loan. We ended up a little short and actually had a small capital call this month (translation needed to invest more money). By tax laws, even though we did not receive any distributions of cash, we are still liable for taxes on our individual returns (I actually do understand how the IRS does not care that the sale proceeds all went to the bank). So I got hit with a significant taxable gain. The bright side is, I should not have nearly as big a gain in the future, and if we sell 2 more units this year, not only will the bank loan be completely paid off, I will get almost all of initial investment back. The last 2 units would be mainly profit, which will provide me with an income for 2006 if I do not find a new job after my trip. Opening day is Monday, so I am looking forward to something positive. Weather report calls for mid-50s and my seat is around row 20 behind the plate. GO TIGERS! I used to buy from him and was generally pleased. My last purchase was for some 61 topps. I bought all the yankees in the set for 300 bucks. When I got them I discovered that the backs all had paper loss from being glued and removed from something. He agreed to refund my money. I sent back the cards and upon receipt he debited my bank account another 300 ! So here I am with no cards, out 600 bucks, and a stranger with unrestricted access to my bank account. Yes, at that moment I was probably the dumbest guy on the planet. Fortunately for me Solomon turned out to be a standup guy and after a few email reminders and some anxiety I finally got the money back. I will support the decision made by the AC but would like to express my opinion to the AC as well as the general membership. Like everyone, I am shocked by what happened and in no way endorse Doug's actions. I am also impressed with Doug's handling of the situation and his admitting to the crime and his willingness to face the consequences of his actions. Doug is a standup guy and it is a shame that his accomplishments at a job that I know he loved and was dedicated to will be forever tarnish. Geno has handled the situation admirably and always reminds us that we are the OBC family. In my family we have experienced a number of situations that could have lead us to give up on our family members. Despite the heartbreak and stress that theses situations caused, we, as a family, have worked through the situations and have become a stronger family because of it. I hope that the AC will make a decision keeping the family in mind. I personally do not see a reason to move Doug to the inactive list unless it is by his request. I haven't look up the statistics but I'm sure that a certain percentage of the general population are sex offenders, a certain percentage have committed felonies, a certain percentage cheat on their wife, and so on. With our membership of 150 or so, it would only stand to (statistical) reason that there are those in our membership who have similar faults or character flaws. Our group has always been there for our members and members' families in need, and I would hope that we could view Doug's situation as one who is in need. After all the rhetoric and discussion on this forum and much soul searching I felt the need to personally offer my support to Doug and Judy in a personal way. Doug asked me to express his sentiments, he said "Tell the guys I miss them". He told me that he and Judy had been out of town and had just arrived home today and he was overwhelmed by the many cards and letter from across the country expressing support for he, his wife and family. And yes, some within our ranks sent their messages as well. As my friend John McLaughlin from Ohio correctly points out Doug will not be allowed access to the Internet for some time to come. Therefore, in my opinion, his OBC status is immaterial. He can no longer use this medium, can't keep an online wantlist, has basically been cut off from us as part of the consequence for his actions. He can no longer be active with us online - isn't that enough? Doug can not even thank you himself, he must do that through others like Geno who shared his letter and this communication. Steve asks "What will be accomplished by removing Doug from OBC?" I guess I would like to know that as well. I can not imagine this group "turning its back" on a member who obviously needs the support of friends. I will say this, after my conversation with my friend Doug I knew I had done the right thing by letting him know that he could still count on me as a friend. His wife and family are supporting him, he is seeking counseling, he has accepted responsibility and has cooperated fully with the authorities, even so he will undoubtedly be incarcerated and may even be fined severely. He's got enough on his plate - we don't need to add more to it. Here's what I will do - I will pray for him, I will support him and I will stay in contact with him - as friends do. The OBCAC timetable of action is fine with me and I trust that their decision will be as well. I'm going to pray for you guys as well!!! Someone else uses this phrase and it seems appropriate - 'nuff said!!! BTW - WWJD BE WELL!!! REGARDS ------------- MARK -------------- Original message -------------- Fellas -- I received a letter from Doug today, so I thought I'd share a bit of it with you. If you have anything you want passed along to the AC for any possible action, feel free to do it through me and I'll pass it along. Doug did not say anything about passing the info along, so I thought in a way it was meant to be shared. In essence, here is what he says: 1) First he says that by now, we all know his predicament and his plea. He has been cooperating with investigators since February when they showed up at his door. 2) "I did not buy or sell pornography, take any pictures, or do anything with children. I did receive pictures by email and sent some on. I'm embarrassed and remorseful." 3) He has been getting crushed by media - Oprah, Good Morning America, NY Times, and People Magazine have all called. He says the media has been in front of his house the last two days, but he "feels much better since this all came to a head." 4) "I was never this important when I was doing good things." 5) "I miss OBC, but it will be awhile before I get back on the internet, so I need to resign from the OBCAC....I miss you all and hope to come back some day if you'll have me." I have tried my best to write these emails over the past few days with a neutral bias. I too am shocked & dismayed at Doug's plight. I've only met the man once, at the National this past summer, so I am by no means an expert on his character, but in our brief time together he struck me as a fine man - a fine human being, despite his legal trouble. As we are all too aware by now, he made a mistake - a major one, but a mistake none the less. Having made that mistake, he has accepted responsibility for his actions & is willing to pay for his mistake, which I feel is an admirable thing to do; so many people who break the law try to avoid accepting responsibility, but not Trader Doug. As many have pointed out, we here in OBC are a family. One of our family members has erred; do we turn our backs? My opinion is no. I hope & pray that Doug & his family can survive this situation as best as they can. As extended family members (and friends), we should not dismiss the possibility of re-embracing Doug into our family some day. My point? I feel that Doug's inactive status is the most appropriate course of action to take. If Doug so desires, when he has completed his sentence he should be free to apply for active status. Since there is no morals clause in the OBC bylaws & rules, I believe it would be wrong for us to expel Doug for a matter that is unrelated to card collecting. For those worried about "guilt by association", I would submit that, a) from what I've read, Doug's membership in OBC is unknown to the general public, and b) if anyone is still trying to dig up dirt, "Doug Smith" is a common enough name to keep any suspicion away from OBC. Since the OBC home address list is private, I see no need to take further punitive action within the group against Doug. Should the OBAC disagree, I, like others, won't walk away from the group. I would respectfully disagree with any such decision, but I'll abide by whatever decision our advisory council implements. Look, Doug screwed up, he knows it and is doing the right thing by acknowledging what happened and cooperating in the case. He's showing a lot more character than the baseball players like Bonds and Sheffield are showing. Basically, he's been "suspended" by the OBCAC by being placed inactive. I believe that for the purposes of this group, the action in appropriate. Kicking him out? Naw, no way. His resume in life has been above reproach up to this point. Doug is not the "problem child" or a "black sheep" of the family. He continues to have my respect for all he has done for this group. He's been an exemplary member of the OBCAC and our treasurer for years. I've had the pleasure of meeting Doug on a few occasions, and would not have a problem with opening my home to him. With that being said, I would motion the OBCAC to maintain his inactive status until such time that he would be allowed to ask for reinstatement to active status. He will pay his debt to society. After that he will probably continue to pay a price that I can't begin to imagine. I will see Doug at some future National, extend my hand and say, "welcome back my friend". No one condones what he did, but I think that having support for his family and from his OBC family will be of enormous comfort for the rough road he has yet to tow. I've already expressed my thoughts and feelings on Doug's and OUR situation. After reading the response to Doug's letter I felt compelled to weigh in on the issue of how the OBCAC will respond. As many have already indicated, I too will accept whatever the OBCAC decides and I appreciate that we have a voice, rather public or private, in this matter. With few exceptions, the public response via Ramblings have deepened my appreciation for this group. I am and will continue to take pride in being a member of OBC regardless of what is decided. As I was checking out Doug's wantlist this morning, I got to thinking (unchartered territory here) what does "Inactive Status" mean? In checking the members list I noted that some inactive members still have their wantlists available and some do not. It seems that the level of inactivity is based upon the preference of the individual. That led me to another question. Is "Inactive" simply a voluntary status on the part of the member? Which begs yet another question: in the history of OBC has anyone been inactivated or for that matter expelled by the OBCAC? If not, this will be a precedent setting situation. Once this door is opened there is no turning back. As a family we will be defined by the decision of the OBCAC. If we are truly a family, it is my opinion that each of us should be allowed to determine our relationship with another family member. If someone decides to "disown" a family member they can cross his/her name off their copy of the member list. If they decide not to trade with or send cards to a member that is their prerogative. They do not however, have the right to decide for the rest of us. I said all that to say this. It is my humble opinion that sometimes the appropriate thing for a governing body to do is nothing. I wish to use my voice to say that I believe that this is one of those times! I have not personally met him, but have been in email contact with him on many occasions. Like many of you, I do not agree with the choiceshe has made but am again impressed with his handling of the situation. The first time I chatted with him I counted him friend and thought him a man of great character. My feelings on his situation have flipped flopped several times. My oldest son has autism and at times has made some pretty bonehead decisions lately and it was when I was addressing one of these choicesthat he asked me if this one choice he made will shape the man he will become. And I thought long and hard about my answer but first I asked him if he thought it would...and he said that he thought it would take more than this one choice to shape his character that maybe perhaps this was just a step backwards to turn him in another direction of his development. I could not have answered him any better and told him that perhaps he was right. It made me think of Doug...I believed him to be a man of character before thishappened. He made a mistake and took responsibility for his choice something that will probably follow him for the rest of his life. Not only will he pay for his mistake, his family will as well. Though I disagree with what he did, I am once again reminded of his character by his taking responsibility for is actions...and because of this, I will continue to call him friend and support him and his family through out his ordeal. This was a turning point for him, a step backwards to steer him in another direction...one of healing, one of forgiveness... Maybe these are just mushy girlie sentiments, but as some of you know, I occasionally share my .02 cents worth...with or with out being asked. ================= To: "trading bases" , Date: Wed, 6 Apr 2005 21:42:05 -0400 From: "ant" Subject: 1974-75 basketball help Hello All, I just picked up a lot of these leaving me with just 4 each to complete. Hi all... Over the past week I've been stunned by the news that my friend Doug engaged in some behaviors that I wouldn't have expected. I've known him throughout my entire tenure (ten years?) in OBC, had him as a guest in my home (I still salivate remembering the awesome dinner he treated me to at Upstream Brewing Company and the first '55 Doubleheader I ever got...well, the only '55 Doubleheader I have!) He was a great golfing partner in the only Vegas Fest I've had the pleasure to attend. He was a terrific Secret Santa to me a few years back. But more than any of that, he's been a kind, concerned person who has always gone out of his way to help anyone in the group, myself included. In fact, despite his obvious crises, HE was the one who wrote to me several weeks ago (likely after the problem had started) just saying he was checking in to see how I was doing, that he hadn't heard from me in a while and wanted to make sure I was doing ok. When I responded back telling him that actually everything was going so well that I was finding it difficult to find time for cards, he responded with a warm note saying how happy he was for me that things were going well. All this while he was beginning to endure his own private hell. I don't know how Doug got involved in his addictions, though the news reported that he had received a photo by e-mail, declined when offered more, but then finally succumbed to temptation against his better judgement. I imagine he may have been more surprised than anyone when he began losing control. Having battled an addiction or two myself, it is excruciating, wanting to act one way and then falling, swearing you'll never do it again and then finding yourself right back in the middle of it. That's what addictions are... actions which you seemingly cannot control. I know we have more than a few other psychologists in the group, and I think most of them would agree with me that as addictions go, paedophilia has got to be one of the toughest to deal with. First, like all sex desire disorders,it is fueled by a quirk in a powerful physiological drive. Can any of us explain why we have certain preferences when it comes to sexuality? Aversions are easier to understand, but desires are damn near impossible. I have a brother-in-law who is gay. He's one of the nicest, most wonderful human beings I've ever know. Through him, I learned that it is a desire that goes far beyond the bedroom. It is a desire to hold hands with, be close to, love and cherish another man. He said it revolts him just as much to see heterosexual passion as it does most straight folks would be if they witnessed gays "in the act". When Doug became addicted, who could he have turned to for help with the addiction? Recovering alcoholics have AA. There are support groups for folks recovering from gambling addictions, drugs, and most all other types of disorders. Yes, there are support groups for people recovering from sexual addictions. The problem is that even within those groups, paedophilia is such an emotional issue and is so reviled that anyone who admits having a problem of that nature is shunned from the group. It's not until they are typically "busted", forcibly "outed" that folks with this type of addiction can find someone to help. I've read that there are two distinct types of individuals who are considered paedophiles. The first is men and women who love children intensely and, often to their own surprise, guilt, and remorse find them sexually arousing as well. The second type of paedophile is the one we more typically think of in society... the child predators who seek out children solely to indulge their own sexual pleasure, regardless of the cost to the children. These are the molestors, the ones who have no remorse and who are driven by aggression much in the same way rapists are driven by their issues with women. I find it terribly difficult to believe that Doug would fall into the second category. The internet has no international boundaries and there are, most unfortunately, countries who could care less about children. There are yet others who purport caring but who are corrupted by the big money of organized crime (and make no mistake, organized crime derives HUGE profits from illicit pornography). At any rate, it's out there and I honestly believe that without the ease and exposure to it on the 'net, Doug would have NEVER victimized a child. This is not to say that I condone Doug's behavior. I can't, as I know that the children who appear in the photos and videos are indeed victims and I care deeply about children. As many have admitted in this group, I, too, have a lot of baggage and am far from perfect. i'm sure that my actions, and far more often my LACK of actions, have harmed others. I wish I could go back and change the hurt I've caused. Doug does too. If I can help him heal in any way whatsoever, I will. If I can help the children who were victimized, I will. And to the extent that I am able, I will try to live my own life in a way that will celebrate strengths rather than condemn weaknesses, a way filled with love rather than hate, and in a way that values rather than condemns the lives of all others. I hope that Doug finds the help he needs and that he never forgets all the positive, wonderful things that he has done for others. I hope he conquers his demons and can someday be happy and at peace with himself again. And I hope that he knows that I will do anything in my power to help him with his struggle and will never turn him away. This has turned into a much longer ramble and has weaved in directions different than what I had believed when I started my posting. But as I said at the beginning, he means a lot to me and I've had over a week now to think about it and now needed somewhere to share my thoughts. Thanks to all of you for your patience, kindness, and generousity... always. Take care... People used to pay a premium just because the card was in nice shape. Time travel blew that to bits! When Mr. Mint "discovered" a few more cases of '52 Topps we were all suspicious. I can't say I was unhappy when he was banished to live on an island with only 80s Donruss to keep him company. You run along now, sonny. OBC now has 4000 members so you better get started if you want to get something out to each person this year. Me? For 20 years I've been thinking about working on an Exhibit set but I think I'm nearly ready to make the commitment. Just as soon as I clean up the storage unit where I keep the cards to be put away, I'll start on it. I'm glad I rented the 2nd unit. Having my dupes in one storage unit and recent purchases in another one has made things much easier. It's funny. I've been in OBC over 25 years now and my list still isnt any shorter. Hey gang, After a vey pleasant phone conversation today with Nicole at the Double Tree O'Hare (which is the same place I'll be staying in Chicago), I'm pretty confident we can hold our swap there. It'll be in a section of the hotel restaurant (kinda like the one we had in AC), only there'll be a LOT more room - at least enough to fit six round tables... I think she quoted something like 1200 sq. ft. and enough room for 80 people, which is way more than we'll ever need. It's sectioned off towards the back or side of the restaurant, so there won't be people walking through that might get hit by flying cardboard. The best part is that since we won't be using an actual meeting room, the cost is FREE except for the pizza/soda we'll be ordering from the caterers on site. Cost of the pizzas range from about $15 for plain cheese to $18 for the combo. (I'm going to get the menu, so I'll have an exact idea of what's available and costs). I'll ask about other meals in case pizza isn't compatible with your stomach or diet (LMK). Here's the hotel info again that I have from their web page: When: Sat. July 30th at 7PM or after the show lets out Where: Chicago O'Hare Hotel Des Plaines 1450 East Touhy Avenue Des Plaines, IL 60018 (847) 296-8866 Bring: your dupes and your apetite Cost: TBD, but probably zero unless they charge for parking. I'll invite OBC friendly dealer Kevin Savage at the next Ft. Washington show and ask about his annual donation. Worst case scenario is less than $7-8/person. Now that the swap is just about a done deal, I can take that small burden off my mind and start getting psyched up about the show. If you've never been to a National or any OBC evant and were thinking about going - this is the one to go to. You can ask past attendees and they can probably confirm that it's always the best part of the trip - and you can usually get better deals at the OBC 'tables' than you'll ever find on the Convention floor... and there's a lot less walking around or haggling If you want to be added to the OBC National e-mail server, PLMK and I'll add you in. His card collection of catchers expands weekly and he really enjoys it. With our Omaha Royals (AAA affiliate of the KC Royals) opening up their season next weekend, we decided it would be fun to take on another catcher-related project. We have a Rawlings RCM8 Lance Parrish catcher's mitt that is in pretty good shape and we thought it might be fun to try to get the glove autographed by each of the O-Royals catchers and from as many catchers from the visiting clubs as possible. I usually get leather baseballs signed in ballpoint pen because sharpies tend to bleed over time as the ink spreads through the leather. However, I'm afraid that pen wouldn't be bold enough to be able to see on the dark brown leather. I'm also concerned about how to care for the glove after it is autographed. Can I still use oil to keep it supple or is it destined to become dry and brittle? Any advice is welcome! Thanks a million! Take care... In fact, in Milwaukee, WI, Brewers fans consume as many hot dogs as they do sausages and bratwurst! Americans also enjoy a number of unique sausages at ballparks. For example, Houston Astros fans will sample jalapeno-smoke sausages, while Los Angeles' Dodgers fans will enjoy chicken andouille and chicken Italian sausages. After I pointed out some 60s Philly + Topps football to Peter, he looked through some 64 Topps. I need about half the set, but one fewer than yesterday thanks to a Ron Mix that Peter bought for me. I also begged him for another 64 out of the pile he bought as a finders fee. Thanks Peter! Mr. Ed was his usual self. I think he knows everyone there -- customers and dealers. Ed let me rifle through his star binders and I picked up a bunch of Clemens & Boggs. I suppose aren't 'vintage' but that didn't bother me. Thanks Ed! It was a pretty good show for me overall. Peter definitely got the deal of the show. A 1967 Shaw/Sutherland for $7.50 !!! I've searched for that before for OBCers and it has taken me months to find one. I'd say its one of the five toughest cards in that set along with the Seaver RC, Red Sox team card and Brooks Robinson high number. Hmm. That's four. I don't know which to add in to make it five. Now to try to tackle the mountain of cards waiting to be put away and/or mailed out. Hmm. Perhaps I can devote my time during chat night to pulling cards while I listen to everyone else yak. Hope all will agree with our decisions, shatever they may be. We are taking these issues seriously, while trying to keep it in perspective with the history and future of the group. We have a small office there that does a ton of work for GM and Ford. Most people chuckle about my going to the Motor City--but then they don't know about FOOT. FOOT (Mike, EEK, Mark, Ron and others) really know how to roll out a red carpet. I believe Andy Cook found this out recently. In any case, I found myself in Detroit last week and was hoping to find a quite restaurant--I called Mike Rich. Armed with his entertainment book--Mike simply has the knack for finding a place to eat where he and I are the only folks in the joint. A year or so ago, it was the Motor City Music Bar & Grill where Mark, Mike and I were provided "entertainment" by the singing waiter/bartender. This place has since closed down. This time it was Jobo's Sports Bar in beautiful downtown Dearborn. Only Mike would recognize that the shrine in the corner was Novo Bojovic--the kicker for the USFL champion Michigan Panthers (their championship year was 1983). This must have been Novo's joint--and has been in steady decline for the past 20 years. But the beer was cold, the food was good, and the Tigers were on the big screen. On top of that, Mike and Mark once again made a trip to Detroit thoroughly enjoyable. Baseball, beer, laughter, stories--and although it isn'tabout the cardboard, there were a few cards tossed in as well. Show Took the drive over to Pittsburgh today to attend the above show, in all hopes to get my 1969 set down to at least a couple of cards, and take my 3 kids out of the wife's hair for a day while she went to Cleveland with her friends. We got there about 12:30 and soon after found OBC hat wearer Terry Dietrick while I was checking for a few cards from Kayleigh's basketball list and a off condition box of vintage. Terry joined in with me looking for some 1971's for himself. I picked a couple cards off of some sets, and handed Terry some hits off of his list. Told Terry I was moving off to find more things for I didn't know how long my almost 2 year old would last as he decided not to take a nap on the way out there. We decided to meet back up in a couple of hours over by the concession stand as Terry's son Adam, was off looking for things as well. In the meantime, I did see Bill Henderson there and raided his off condition boxes for a while, he was the only person that recognized the logo, but there were quite a few dealers with Vintage, and most of them were dealing pretty well. I managed to clean up the 1969 set down to three cards, and did find a 69 Mantle for $40 that only has 6 pen dots on the back, from the same guy I picked up a Carew Rookie for another $35. The kids were starting to get antsy after that table so we took a break and went outside and let them run around for a while. Great day out and wished I knew that they would have survived an invitation to attend the evening's Pirates game. However I knew better then to test them. While the two older ones were snaking I let Micah out of the stroller, and within ten minutes, I learn that he runs right into the knee of Mr. Alou who was there to sign thank goodness no damage done, he just rubbed his leg, then Micah's head and went into the show. Back in for round two, where I started just rummaging through the "lesser" boxes that I could find. I picked up about 60 more cards that will be passed around over the next week (anyone need a '60 Banks) and found Terry again. By now my three kids were antsy, and the one in the stroller asleep. Terry looked like he did some damage to his 1971 set and I was pretty happy with my 1969 cards that I had found, we chatted for a while with his son, and I left them to make one more quick round and then head back to Ohio. Over all I liked the show, there was about 10 off condition boxes I went through, at least one dealer of just Hockey, and he had two tables of it, a good variety of other items such as gloves, records, a guy that dealt with just films, magazines and books. Nice to see and hear that some dealers were from far away as Texas, (707 Sportcards was there) and it wasn't crowded so that you didn't feel like you were in someone's way. Down side of it all, was parking and food offerings or at least a place to sit and take a break. After I got back home I started thinking about all those sets I don't have yet on my list...... I guess more questions I will ask another day... hopefully more of the local members will meet up there next John Leroux A card to someone is just a stamp away _Vintage Card Wantlist_ (http://hometown.aol.com/trufan999/CardWantlistindex.html) ================= To: Date: Sun, 17 Apr 2005 15:35:11 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: Back in a bit! Sunderland Sun Staff April 20, 2005 YOU MIGHT think, you parents introducing your early elementary school-age children to baseball this spring, that it is an American tradition you're passing along - a proud game a century or so old, descended, some say, from "rounders" in England. You're right - in a limited way, though. Columbia retiree Skip McAfee, 67, would enjoy seeing your expression as he tells you in a friendly, matter-of-fact voice that fathers and sons (and, more unexpectedly, mothers and daughters) have made a game of hitting thrown objects with sticks since, at least, ancient Egypt. McAfee also would point out that "rounders" - still played in England, by the way - isn't the only old English game that contributed to what we call baseball (and softball). Did you ever hear, he might ask, of "stoolball," in the object was for a pitcher to knock over a three-legged stool protected by batter? It began in England in the 12th century. Or, did you ever hear of a group of "old cat" games from Colonial times that had hitting a ball and running to a base, if little else, in common with modern-day baseball? McAfee, you see, is passionate about the diamond kind of sport. Besides umpiring softball games almost daily during the spring and summer, and serving years as commissioner of the at-least-as-social-as-competitive Cindy La Rue Co-Rec Softball League and participating in an over-60 men's softball league, McAfee also is a ... mmmmm "I'm a baseball researcher/historian/lexicographer," he said. He is not into baseball statistics, per se. McAfee's pursuit is lore and language and terminology and baseball as sociology. He loves research and historical documentation and anecdotal evidence of the impact of baseball on To illustrate, McAfee has for years collected quotes about the sport from books, newspapers and other resources. He just compiled many of them in footnote-laden paper used in the new spring edition of Nine, A Journal of Baseball History and Culture published by the University of Nebraska Press. Three samples: "I watch a lot of baseball on radio." That was former President Gerald Ford, "Baseball is very big with my people. It figures. It's the only time we can get to shake a bat at a white man without starting a riot." From African-American comedian and social activist Dick Gregory, 1962. And from 1994, Stephanie Moller, then 12, a French horn player from Baltimore County after performing at an Orioles game: "It was kind of neat to stand on the same field where all the players spit." That quote collection will be handy, no doubt, as part of a new baseball-related work-in-progress by writer Dickson, a Montgomery County author who has published 45 books. One of those works, The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, was published in 1989. Near the end of its compilation, McAfee became involved through his work as president of the Society for American Baseball Research. Since then, he and Dickson have developed what at times becomes daily collaboration. A second edition of the dictionary, that one with McAfee's considerable assistance, was published in 1999. And in addition to a new volume about baseball quotes, a third edition of the dictionary with Dickson as author but McAfeeas editor is being negotiated now. Dictionaries being what they are, as documentation of language, are never finished, Dickson said. The current edition contains about 7,000 entries, ranging from "A," the scorecard abbreviation for an assist, to "zurdo," Spanish for "lefty," or a left-handed player. The third edition is expected to contain about 10,000 entries. McAfee said that as SABR president, he had to try to find anyone who knew of a baseball dictionary - there was none - and was referred to Dickson, who had one in draft form. The two later discovered they were both alumni of Wesleyan University in Connecticut. McAfee, said Dickson, has contributed countless hours to the dictionary, serving now as not only part-time researcher, but also as a compiler of new information with "unusual sensitivity" to how meanings of a term originate and change over time. "Skip considers himself a baseball scholar," said Dickson, talking about the Columbian's value to his work. "He knows a phenomenal amount of stuff, and he has an intensity that many don't have. He's almost monastic in his approach." All of which comes down to loving the history of baseball. Lots of folks, for instance, still think Abner Doubleday invented the game, in Cooperstown, N.Y. But as a visit to the Hall of Fame in that tiny central New York town will prove, 'twasn't so. In fact, McAfee pointed out, "There's a single thing written about Doubleday and baseball - well, there was one. About 1870, Doubleday, who was an Army officer, requisitioned some bats and balls for his troops." Think the name "baseball" appeared post-Civil War - another widely held "We know that's not true," said McAfee, noting an ordinance in Pittsfield, Mass., banning various sports from being played in the town limits, including "base-ball." That was in 1791, when the fear of "base-ball" was broken windows during a time when glass was rare, treasured and expensive. Even more interestingly, McAfee then mentions a German book, published in 1796, that refers to "English base ball" - not rounders or one-cat or stoolball. So, you see, you T-ball parents? You're passing a grand old game to your kids this spring. But there's lots more to the story. Sometimes you need to do a scan two (or even three) times, with a reboot in-between to get things properly cleaned up. You may also want to install a firewall. Condition is not a big issue. Thanks for taking a look.
