(or more than you ever wanted to know about Jim!) Hi all... Contrary to popular belief, I have not been abducted by alien beings, been marooned on a deserted island or fallen into a comatose stupor in front of my computer. Instead, today marks the first day in 26 years that I have not been an apartment dweller! Our lease officially ended yesterday which brings closure to the move into our first home that started back in November. While there are many positives to having a prolonged period of time to move (e.g., less pressure, ability to paint rooms prior to moving in, etc.) the flip side has been that I've been completely consumed by the move for over two months. Back in November, my in-laws arrival with a truckload of furniture from the east coast. Prior to their arrival, I had to paint all the rooms where the furniture was going to go. Once they arrived, we had phase one of the unpacking, followed by a frantic 1 1/2 days that I had access to the truck so that I could haul boxes... and boxes.... and MORE boxes! With the help of a few friends with pickup trucks and a really big dude who doubles as a clown for the rodeo (yeah, he TRIES to get bulls to chase him... crazy!) we got all of the basics for living moved over. Next up, my dad (bless his heart!) came down for Christmas and helped me reconstruct the shelving in the garage so that we could get all the aforementioned boxes off the floor and free up the stalls. Another day of kindness from our pick-up truck friends (this time toting a horse trailer) followed and got all of the big furniture taken care of. Once my dad left, my mother-in-law reappeared and I got to experience the joy of hanging curtains (and tearing them down again), along with little projects like cutting new seats for some busted wicker chairs she hadn't been able to resist at an antique shop. I ain't exactly "Bob the Builder" but just like they taught me in grade school, I tried my best and tried my hardest. Following Ben's 6th birthday party, she'd had enough of us and returned out east, we had the "final days" left, meaning moving all of the stuff from three storage units plus scouring our old apartment to the point where there is no reasonable way they can keep our deposit. At any rate, it all ended yesterday, with the official turning in of the keys at about 6 p,m. My wife had had enough and took off in our car. I had the kids in the van and we were all a little more nostalgic. After all, Sarah's spent half her life in that apartment and Ben's been there all but six months of his young life. After sitting in the van a moment, I asked Ben if he wanted to take one last trip over to the tennis courts, where we had spent countless hours playing baseball (yeah, I know... kind of weird but at least there was a net to catch a few of the balls). He, of course, quickly agreed and we went over, while Sarah went through her memories still in the van. When we got to the tennis court, almost all of the snow had already melted off. I found a piece of tar from the edge of the court that had broken off over the winter. He grabbed a stick. About eight swings later, stick and said flying object met with a resounding crack. He said, "One more swing?" but I said, "Nope. A home run is the perfect way to say goodbye." and we walked happily back to the van. (Of course we kept the stick and tarball ). Apologies to all of you who I have blatantly ignored over the past 2+ months (including my poor Secret Santa recipient... I haven't forgotten). Though my cards are still in a bit of a mess, I will be recovering soon and will have packages out. Also, our computer is up and running well so I will try to gather stray packages and get a boatload of thanks out in the next week. You all have been way too generous in your sendings recently and please believe me that they have certainly brightened my days when I was weary and wondering if this was ever going to end. Thanks to all of you... and spscific thanks will certainly follow. Take care and I hope you all are having a wonderful New Year... ================= Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2005 05:23:50 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "xtrjmx" Subject: Shocked... Hi all... I can't speak about SCD "going down" as I have only subscribed for about 4 years or so. But at 50 cents a week I feel it is worth it. It is kind of thin - the last issue I received was only 72 pages. But there seems to always be something worth reading. For example, in the recent issue is an article by Bob Lemke on Duke Kenworthy, baseball's first millionaire. The frequent interviews with ex baseball players is always interesting. Frequently, OBC members appear in columns describing new discoveries in vintage cards. As you must know, George Vrecheck has occasional articles in SCD. The typical issue of SCD has many pages of auction listings, if that is of interest. For me, at four bits a copy the SCD is a no-brainer. But then I'm easily amused, the local Daily Olympian lists at 50 cents a copy and has far less content than the SCD. You might want to check your newsstands for the next issue of SCD (Feb 18, 2005) which is scheduled to feature pre-war baseball. -Dave Fallen ----- Original Message ----- From: ken goetsch To: obc Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2005 4:18 AM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Do I want to subscribe?????? As far as not signing the e-mail, his return e-mail address would be sufficient for me. I would have called him Tony. Since we are not a professional group, formality is not a prerequisite. I know I got into OBC by discovering the website and contacting a few people "cold" regarding trades. That's the process for getting into the group. Florida was looking pretty good this time of year. Since the Pats had just won a berth in the big game with a victory in Pittsburgh, it looked like the ideal spot to spend a vacation. Our own Chris Stufflestreet had already offered a place to stay after LAST YEAR'S Superbowl, plus my parents were good friends with a couple that had just moved down to Jacksonville (and they had called my folks to ask if I was planning on coming down), so I had two options of places to stay. Flights into the city were outrageous, but hey, I can practically make the drive down there in my sleep... it's only 18 hours or so - not a problem. Step three after requesting the week off was acquiring a ticket. Alas, none were to be found for much less than two grand as of this printing. No matter, my decision had been made. Bob Bannon is also in town for the game and has been looking for tickets without a lot of success as well. The trip down was uneventful. I left the house shortly before 2 PM and stopped in Virginia for a quick nap. The rest area had a sign that had a two hour parking limit. I set my watch for 1-1/2 hours, figuring I could just drive another 20 miles to the next rest area if I was still tired. I woke up before the alarm went off. The combination of being pumped up on energy drinks and jelly beans, plus the adrenaline from getting away from the frigid, snow ridden north must've kept me going. I made it to Chris' place before 9 AM the next day... a mere 19 hours after I had left. I tried to stall for a bit by having breakfast and stopping by a grocery store to pick up some food, I even drove by my parents' friend's house, but I still arrived about three hours earlier than I had planned. Fortunately, Chris and his family were just getting up. Funny thing about both houses I'm staying at - Jacksonville is one of the (if not the number one) largest city in square miles in the US. You can drive nearly 30 miles in a straight line and never leave the city. I figured that the two houses would be 20 miles apart or something. I put in the driving directions from one place to the other on Mapquest. It came out to about a mile and a half - but in a big circle. There's a group of trees behind Chris' back yard. If those trees weren't there, I could literally throw a rock from one house to the other without a lot of effort. Small world. Chris showed off his collection and added a couple extra books to mine in the process. After calling Bob Bannon and Guru, who couldn't meet up with us this time, we headed out to a couple local card shops. The first place we went to was closed (and wasn't all that great according to Chris), but the second place was open and rather busy. The main display case with any old cards in it had what appeared to be full book prices on all the cards. I asked to look at a Red Man card of Stan Musial, which was marked at only $135 (this was without the tab too). Unsurprisingly, I passed - it had the wrong offer expiration date on the back I poked around the storage area, which had rows of boxes full of mostly UV stuff - this place would be great for anyone working to find commons for their newer sets. After some searching, I located the vintage boxes and picked out a couple 64's that could potentially hit my list (which I didn't bring with me as usual). They were well worn and I was hoping I could talk down the clerk from whatever gem mint price he quoted me. In the process of this, Chris comes over with a small plastic box with less than a dozen 63 Post Cereal cards in it. I take a look through and see that one of them is our own Frank Thomas. I was pretty sure that he was on my list, but since my list is mostly scarce and super scarce SP's, I grabbed one of the thick older SCD's that were on display in the markdown pile. Sure enough, the card listed for over a hundred bucks and was one of the ones I kept getting outbid on eBay at $40. I added it to the two 64's I pulled and headed up to the cash register. The clerk, who appeared to be slightly bothered by the presence of customers in the store, looked up from surfing the internet on his computer and asked, "Will that be all?" After I assured him that I probably wouldn't need anything else in the building, I hoped I could walk out of there without spending much more than twenty dollars. To my absolute horror, instead of reaching for a Buckett and looking up the cards or even looking at the numbers on the back of the 64's, the clerk simply rang them up... "three cards... fifty cents... plus tax... that'll be $1.61" After paying him and getting my CHANGE from the two dollars I handed him, I asked Chris if he was ready to go. We rushed out to the awaiting getaway car and sped off... actually, we took our time getting into the car and were well under any speed limits leaving the store parking lot, but I kept waiting for the store alarm to go off after they had just been 'robbed' That one hit to my list made the whole trip worthwhile. One of the 64's was a hit to my list as well - sweet! We stopped at a local restaraunt that Chris had mentioned before which had a classic car theme. All the dishes were named after cars. I polished off my meal and dessert like I had never seen food before. Chris wasn't even through with his sandwich yet as I almost licked the design off the dish - if any of you ever wondered how I eat so much, I'll let you in on my secret: try going almost 24 hours with just eating a couple handfuls of jelly beans and see how hungry you are. Shortly after getting back to the house, I decided that catching up on my sleep was a good idea, since I wanted to be awake for the game no matter where I'd end up watching it. TO BE CONTINUED... Woke up a little early (about 7 AM), but didn't want to wake up Chris' family after showing up a little earlier than expected the day before. So I typed out yesterday's brief note - which takes a while when you don't know how to type... I also discovered that I had $100 in my sportsbook.com account from a bet I made back in February last year for the Patriots to win the AFC championship. I used all that money to place a couple wagers on the game that night. After watching a few hours of pre-game, I tired of all the way-too-in-depth-so-that-nobody-cares stories that ESPN was hashing out, so I turned on a station more suited to my taste - the Cartoon Network. Didn't get to watch too much of that before I piled into the car with Chris' family and we headed downtown to the stadium. After parking and taking a shuttle bus, we finally arrived at the stadium. The place was a sea of people, mostly decked out in Eagles colors - I knew it was a bad sign when most of the license plates on the interstate during the trip down here were from Pennsylvania. We made our way around the stadium to a point on the opposite end from where we arrived and met up with Bob Bannon. Bob had been keeping an eye out for an extra ticket for me, but since there were a few thousand people outside the stadium looking for tickets as well, chances of me finding any for under two grand were very slim. Just like last year, I had to give up hope of seeing the game in person. We chatted with Bob for a while before he headed inside and we returned to the house. There we saw some of the pregame festivities and everything up to the coin flip (which I lost my bet on, but since it was a free bet promo on the website, I got my money From there we jumped in the car again and sped off to a restaurant with a NASCAR theme. Just like the stadium, there seemed to be a majority of Eagles fans there and they had a lot to cheer about during the first half. The Eagles scored the first TD and erased the last few bets I had placed, which were all Pats scoring the first TD. As halftime approached, so did Melissa's bed time, so we finished off our meals and returned to Chris' place during the intermission. I didn't miss Paul McCartney taking off his clothes or anything, did I? < G> One of the things that buoyed my faith was that no team had ever lost the turnover battle and won the game. So despite the tied score, I felt confident that the Pats would win and I'd get to cash in on some of the bets I placed that morning. Like most of the games I had witnessed as a season ticket holder, the Pats made it interesting in the end, but played good defense when the game was on the line to come out on top. Watched the post game show, which compared to the amount of pre-game analysis isn't even enough to review what just happened and then the Simpsons before calling it a night. MORE TO COME... Back in the '90s I fell in love with the CBS "One Shining Moment" series, aired at the end of every NCAA men's championship game. I used this remarkable form of art as an inspirational teaching tool and had great success with it. I would like to use it again; but alas, I have not been able to find the videos anywhere. I hope to tape this year's version at the end of the tournament; but I would love to get my hands on the tapes of earlier "Moments," especially the one that I thought was the best one, the one with Christian Laetner's last second basket against Kentucky in the early '90s. I just inishing packaing up the OBC winners and hope to get to a PO in the next couple of days. A few months ago, I received one of those random E-mails many of us in OBC get, asking for help or info (I am not talking about the incessant cards for sale E-mails). I got one from Kent Blasingame, asking about Armour coins of his dad. They come in multiple colors and he wanted info. I sent him 2 different colored coins for his dad and a stack of 8 cards (some truly Tiptonesque examples) of his dad, and asked for them to be autographed and returned. He was thrilled at the offer, as he was expecting to buy the Armour coins. Just yesterday, I got the signed cards back. I had enclosed a note, as I am apt to do, discussing OBC and our philosophy. Explained that is why I would not sell the coins to him. He included a note that said that I can send cards to his father anytime and he will sign them. So if anyone wants to send some cards, I think that would apply. Feel free to use my name. The address for the son is: Kent Blasingame 9040 Longfeather Fountain Hills, AZ 85268 I am getting stoked about another Detroit invasion of an OBcer, as Andy Cook is coming to town in 3 weeks. I have already started assembling a welcome stack, as I figure I need to buy some East coast votes for the upcoming OBC elections. Training camps open this month and opening day is less than 2 months away. Been looking at the days off I plan on taking this year. Opening Day, April 29 the first day of the Toronto show, 3 days for the All-Star game (Ron Perry and I have a package that allows us to buy tickets for all the All-Star game events), 2 days for the National, 2 days for Jewish holidays, a Friday in November for the fall Toronto show. That represents 1/2 the time I am allotted each year, including sick and personal days. That says something, I am just not sure what. Been dreaming about fixing up my house. Actually had new windows put in last month. Do not know which is a bigger dream, cleaning up the house or finishing the 52 Topps. I would like to remind folks of my love for Coke caps, especially with my mentee Don Rice trying to horn in on my OBC monopoly of them. If you are at a show and see some of regional teams (not the All-Stars as they are the commons), I would be interested. Baseball or Football. If they are priced $.50 ea. or less I will buy them all. At $1 ea. I most likely would buy them if they are in decent shape. I generally do not pay much more than that, unless it is 1 of the final ones to finish a set. Try and get an E-mail address from the dealer and I can strike my own deal. Hits to my lists have slowed to a crawl recently. I guess I do not have enough sets listed for people to hit. I will try and think of others to add. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks for reading. I stopped by the store, and the owner mentioned how he bought a collection and some cards were "so bad" "I threw them out". I was naturally horrified by that. I have on multiple occassions explained to him that we have many members that cannot be offended by how bad a card is. Rob (the dealer) is a tough grader. Those of you have partook in my DS offerings where I mention "good" condition cards will probably agree. If they are marked good, they are most likely from Rob. Rob went into the back and supposedly "fished" some out of the trash. The first stack, other than having a hole punch in a corner of each card, were in pretty nice shape. Few creases, writing or other damage. Just the hole punch. Cards included many high number All-Stars from the 1960 Topps set. Yaz Conway ended up with the Mays, to name 1 card in the stack. The 2nd stack included some 1959s that were trimmed to having no borders. Many of these were the BB Thrills cards. Again, other than being trimmed, there are few defects. A couple of weeks later, I stopped by and he pulls out a team bag with a small price tag on it and said he had been saving these for me, but did not expect to see me for a few more weeks (next card show near his store is March 6). This bag had some 61 Topps Bb commons that had been pinky shears cut. For those not accustomed to this language, that means they were cut to look like deckle edge cards. It gives tham a really unique look. I also got another couple with hole punches from 57. He thinks I got them all now. What is even funnier about this is that he will mark cards as poor and put them in his show cases for 5% of book. These were below poor to him. Although I am sure some will be devastated by how these cards look, others will be thrilled to get some. I have been sending them, as supplements to my DS packages and as supplements to the Super Bowl packages. I still have and willbe amking them available in the OBC chats on Sunday and Tuesday nites at 8:00 est. Reminder you need an AIM to be invited in. Game would have been better had I won either a square there or the OBC pool. Alas, no winners for me this year. Be well. mike Rich Yahoo! That said, I hope to catch up in that area on Sunday. For now, I am writing to report travel plans that I just made to attend a conference being held in Binghamton, NY in April (22-23). I am presenting a paper there on religious home-schooling. This is the third time I have been to this conference, but I have decided, for the first time, to rent a car and make the pilgrimage up to Cooperstown (virgin territory for me). That said, I wantedto post my itinerary to the groups, in case anyone else was going to be around at that time and wanted to meet up. The exact schedule is posted below. I think that Friday morning/afternoon will be the best time to make it up to Cooperstown, with my paper being presented that evening, although Saturday afternoon might be an option, as well. I planned on spending some time Sunday with family in Scranton, but knowing them, they might not even have time for me (five kids does that to a family). Still, let me know if you have any ideas. The red in the scan appears far too bright (though I'll admit that can be a scanner issue). However, the line that says "Topps Baseball" at the bottom is a slightly darker shade of red. "But, Chris, that could just be from the wear of 52 1/2 years that might not be evident on the rest of the card!" That might be a factor, but look at the words "Topps Baseball"...they're in a different font than the one used on an authentic '52 Topps card (and yes, I looked at my own hi # '52T to verify). From there, I journeyed to Charlotte to visit my brother for one night and see my niece for the first time (she was born in September). My brother was sick with the flu, so after complaining to him that he worked too much and I never got to see him when I visited before - I still didn't get to see him while I was there. The next morning I popped my head in his room to say bye and headed north. Now the car, which has close to 200k miles on it began causing more trouble - you didn't think that I could make a trip in the car without anything going wrong, did you? Well, to be honest, it seemed kinda loud before I even left for Florida. By the time I rolled into Charlotte, I was going deaf. I located a muffler place and they told me that everything from the converter back was junk... and they pointed out the hole in the pipe that was the major cause of the noise. I decided to have them fix it before I made the seven or eight hour drive to Steve's. Before I left, I met up with an old collecting buddy nearby for lunch. The weather getting up there was stormy and I saw my first snowflakes in over a week... I didn't miss them at Got to Steve's at around 10:30 and after calling a few of the local Papa John's, we finally got a pizza delivered close to midnight. We swapped a few cards (Steve handed over the Bill Walton that finished one of my hoops sets - THANKS STEVE!!) and retired in the wee hours in order to get some rest before the Chantilly show the next day. We got to the show around two and I spent the greater majority of the next four or five hours at Chandy's table (Season Ticket). I picked up a few green tints in the quarter box, then went behind the table to look over some of the other boxes of his better (and more expensive) stuff. I ended up getting a few 1950 Bowmans on my variation list and some '64s on my list including the Maz, plus a bunch of Kellogg's hits. Not realizing what time it had become, I had to run through the rest of the show in the last hour or two and didn't get much time to spend at other OBC friendly dealers who had made the show. I said hi to Ron Barrett, William Chappelle, Nick Kirksey and Pat Blandford (Kevin Savage cards). William Chappelle's table yielded a nice group lot of 59 Fleer (52 different for about $150 including a couple of the tougher ones) that cut my list to just a dozen and set me up with a bunch of dupes. All the cards had glue residue on the back corners. I also picked up a couple of the 57 checklists that were marked up and cheap. At the last table as they were throwing everyone out, I ran into a dealer who had high numbers from many years at two bucks each. Since I didn't mark off my list as I went along, I didn't really know who I needed at that point and only grabbed a 72 Koosman before leaving. Steve and I grabbed some Chinese food to go and met up with Peter Mead at Steve's house for some late night trading. Peter grabbed a couple Kellogg's before he left the house that were still hits despite my efforts at the show - THANKS PETER!! It was good to meet up with him and I managed to hit his list with a couple cards in my dupes and DS boxes. Steve also loaned me some 1950 Bowman cards out of his binder until I found appropriate replacements (copyright or not). It was another late night but I finally went to bed just before 2 AM. I had a long day ahead of me tomorrow. Since I was rushed at the end of the show the night before, I decided to make a quick stop at the show and visit all the other tables EXCEPT the one I had spent so much time on the day before. I got my 1964 list down to just Whitey Ford and hit 707 Sportscards to look at the 49 Leaf SP's I couldn't afford. Levi had just one PSA 1 on my list and he offered it to me at a price that was slightly more than my target price, but when you're down to just 6 on that set, the extra $25 wasn't going to kill me. I also hit him up for all but one of the remaining 59 Fleers on my list. (Due to a clerical error or an omission when reading off the numbers, I still need #11.) I said good-bye to Steve and a couple dealers before heading out. I stopped by a nearby Jiffy Lube before making the seven-eight hour ride home. That turned out to be a really good idea, since my car had an oil warning light flickering on and off. Turns out that there was almost no oil left in the engine after 4000 miles of driving since I had it changed last. Pulled into the driveway at 9 PM and did a little sorting and unpacking before getting some badly needed rest. Final totals include 3 cities, 3000 miles, no tickets (Superbowl or speeding), 5 OBC'ers met, one set completed, two brought down to a single card, about $150 in gas, $750 in car repairs and nearly that much spent on cards at the show. Overall it was a really fun trip. Now it's back to work for a couple more weeks - the Ft. Washington show is less than three weeks away now. Hope you all enjoyed coming along for the ride. For me that moment came when the Washington Nationals baseball team assigned seating locations for its season ticket holders. The seats my buddies and I were assigned are somewhere south of Montreal but nowhere near home plate. The seating assignments were done by a "lottery," but as the team president, Tony Tavares, told The Washington Post in a statement that pretty well sums up American civilization in our era, "This is Washington, D.C., and I had to take care of certain people. Of course, V.I.P.'s were taken care of, as they are in any other circumstance." Since I wasn't among those who were taken care of, I find that statement morally offensive. Like any other Washingtonian, I have long dreamed of taking my kids out to a ballgame in seats good enough to allow them access to members of the Senate Finance Committee. I have dreamed of sitting where I could wrestle over foul balls with Robert Novak, peer at pop-ups from behind John Kerry's head and sit in a seat next to the one reserved for Vernon Jordan's BlackBerry. I have dreamed of sitting just behind the dugout with cadres of high-cheekbone Protestant "machers," sharing in the jollity that prevails when self-important people get together in circumstances that confirm their own self-importance, laughing at jokes no one bothered to tell, suppressing our motorcade-envy long enough to swap tidbits with Condi and Karl. But I forgot: This is the Age of the Résumé Gods. We are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights - though, of course, V.I.P.'s must be taken care of, as they are in any other circumstance. This is the age of Renaissance Weekends and Davos. This is an age in which it is immoral to discriminate according to race or sex, but discrimination according to career status is so thoroughly baked into society that it governs everything from restaurant table assignments to elementary school admissions prospects. We have worked up so many subtle gradations based on occupational status that if the characters from Edith Wharton novels could come to earth, they'd be so put off by our social stratifications they'd probably turn into Bolsheviks. It's not surprising that the Nationals would reserve seats for the usual array of eminences. What's surprising is that the team president would so piously use this argument as his defense, as if he were simply pointing out the obvious order of the universe. We've gone from a culture of piously denied inequality to one of brazenly acknowledged Big Shot-ism. Doesn't Tavares know that in the city of Washington the number of self-defined Very Important People surpasses the actual population by 150,000 percent? Does he have no respect for all the bogus Washington insiders: the midrank lobbyists, the once-notorious villains from scandals of the past, the authors of historically important monographs published in obscure foreign policy journals? Recently, President Bush told Times reporters he doesn't sit around reading the journal Foreign Affairs. Now the wonks who write such pieces are being told they are insignificant by the Washington Nationals - which is to the baseball world what Belarus is to the realm of global power politics. And what about us journalists? The beauty of Washington is that we have created the illusion that journalists are as important as the people we cover. It may be secretly true that we media types are actually like those haute couture sales clerks who think they have the right to be snooty because they once sold a thong to Courtney Cox. But by sheer numbers and the combined weight of our own vanity, we have created the illusion that the peanut gallery is as important as the arena. Does Tavares not recognize this historic achievement of civilization? Does he feel no need to bow and scrape to those of us who have appeared on C-Span? As is well known, the definition of an unjust privilege is one that has not been extended to you. So as I am sitting back there in the exurban reaches of the stadium, back in the realm of long foul balls, I'll be so far from the true aristocracy that I will have nothing to do but watch baseball, nurse my resentments, contemplate revolution and plan for the days of the The V.I.P.'s must be taken care of, as they are in any other circumstance. He recalls an e-mail I sent out lamenting the fact that I had probably sent it out not realizing it was a legitimate variation - the bat shows through his name... sorta like the 1958 Pancho Herrer card. Chris postulates that I might have sent it to him, but hands it back to me with the stipulation that I send him the corrected one in return. Sooo, I finally get around to putting the card into the binder and I realize that having two sets of 1967 Topps is a problem. (I know some of you who are still battling the stupid high numbers on your first set are rolling your eyes now.) I grabbed the binder that houses my nicer set (the one I started prior to joining OBC) My set is in the binder back to back, so that leaves just a couple open spots in the back for variations. Those are already filled with a couple of the checklists and Bob Bruce, so I placed the card on top of the Ed Spiezio that was already there. As I was shutting the binder, I noticed a couple more cards in a pocket in the front of the binder... Mike McCormick and Jerry Priddy in semi-rigids and one card that was just loose - Ed Spiezio... the one I thought I had mailed away!! I had originally discovered it while I was collecting my second (low grade) '67 set and put it in the back of that binder. When I didn't see it there a while later, I had assumed that I had just mailed it off, figuring it wasn't a big deal and obviously had forgotten that I had placed it into the front of the first binder. So here's my proposal: Does anyone want an Ed Spiezio variation? If you have read this far without laughing and/or saying to yourself "Ken is off his rocker", you just might want one The only catch is that you need to have a card to replace the hole in Chris' binder that I made... you can send the card directly to him, just let us both know it's on it's way - otherwise I can just mail him back this one I have here. First eligible entry gets it - is anyone else as excited about this as I am? Probably not. Note from gtx_usa: LG is "OBC-NL" PassWord is "cards" I tried to keep it simple using the 8 basic categories (HR/RBI/AVG/SB plus W/SV/ERA/WHIP), 1 player at each position & 11 pitchers (5 starters/6 RPs) with (9 total bench guys). That's a 28 man roster meaning the 12 fantasy teams will select 336 of the 350 in the NL, if I have my math correct. I'm open to suggestions but I think this makes it more like if we were real NL owners/Mgrs. Maybe someone will start a AL only LG if they are dead set against a NL only LG. We can increase the roster sizes to deplete the talent pool if less than 12 sign up. By only using 8 cats it will make the stats a lot neater/easier to read on the screen. I know some people like stacked rosters where you have stars at every position but that's not realistic plus injuries don't hurt a team much. Truth is, in real ball an injury causes a team a problem usually. By using NL only we have only half as many players to study & keep up with. Anyone in OBC is welcome. If needed I'll lookin in VCT to get the last few teams but I'm giving OBCers 1st shot :-) Use the PW & LG ID above if you want to give it a try. Trade dealine is 7-31 with 6 trades max. Tarde reject is by league vote/2 day span. Waiver wire is 2 days also. Draft day not yet set. Stats start 4-3. Max IP is set at 1300 as of now (may need to adjust). 8 postions x 162 games each. It's not as simple as a NL LG with weekly lineups like Rittenberg was looking for at mid season, but it's far more simple than the LG last yr with 18 teams & about 20 categories :-) AS Belushi said in Animal House..... WHO'S WITH ME?!!!!!!!!!! PS I'm not interested in doing a regular LG with AL & NL but anyone want to be in a LG using both that is basically a HR contest? It may let me set up another LG where HRs are the only category used & each participant picks so many players from AL & NL. We can make it so you don't change your lineup & no trading, so it'd be simple. The fantasy team with the most HRs wins. --Fantasy Baseball Commissioner http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1 ================= Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2005 20:53:16 EST To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: biggies@aol.com Subject: Big collection just acquired, 1950-1983(mostly 50's and 60's) Hello fellow cardboardians: I have just completed a deal on a collection that I have been trying to buy for about a year now. Ken Morganti took me up on the offer and came South...to escape the snow and cold (as an expatriate New Yorker, I don't blame him) and to try and watch the game in person. I figured that Ken's trip to Jacksonville couldn't be complete without getting a couple of other OBC members gathered together, so I tried to set up a quick luch date. The other Jacksonville-based OBCer, Larry Tipton, had to watch his granddaughter. Bob Bannon was in town with friends and his sons...but when he told me ho spread out everybody was and how hectic his schedule was, I realized that he wouldn't be meeting up with us either. Ken let me know to expect him "between 12 noon and 6 PM," depending on whether he decided to get any sleep. So I was absolutely surprised to hear my doorbell at 9 AM! Most of the morning was spent showing off my collection and reference material, talking football, OBC stuff and flipping through cards. Plus, Ken got the unique experience of watching my dog, cat and 6 year-old daughter Melissa in their natural habitat. Ken took a power nap while I got ready for the day, and then I took him out to show off some of my adopted home city. There were two local card shops nearby, so I pulled into Dan's Sport Cards on San Juan Avenue...closed (no problem, as he's often a little high on the prices and not always willing to go Without missing a beat, I went around the corner and drove out to Jacksonville Sports Cards on Cassat Ave. The place is mostly UV, but there are rows of commons boxes and a few vintage deals to be had. Without a wantlist, Ken flipped through some boxes of 1960s commons and found a couple of hi # 64T RCs he though he might have needed. At the same time, I found a small plastic box of Post cards; remmembering that I hit his wantlist at the National with a '61 Post Snider, I went back to Ken and handed them over... "Posts? All I need from those lists are SPs..." He trailed off at the end of the sentence as he stopped at the '63 Post card of OBC's own Frank Thomas. He quickly found a store copy of Beckett's "big book" and flipped through to the Post section. Thomas was an SP with a $140 price tag. After mentioning something about hoping to get out of the store without spending more than $20, he went up and paid as I flipped through some old NFL cloth team stickers in a vain attempt to locate a Steelers logo. Ken paid and asked if I was ready to leave. As we got back into my car, Ken told me that the grand total of the three cards -- two '64 Topps hi #s and a '63 Post SP -- was $1.61. No, that wasn't a typo. A dollar and sixty-one cents! I felt like an accessory to a burglary. I took him to a local restaurant for lunch and he graciously picked up the check (in all, Ken picked up the tab at three lunches while he stayed...thanks!). If any other OBCers stop by, I'll be happy to show off both the card shop and the restaurant...they know how to feed you! On Super Bowl Sunday, we made arrangements to meet up with Bob Bannon just before the game. Bob had been trying to see if he could get a ticket for Ken, and I figured that we might be able to luck into a seller outside the stadium. The four of us (Ken, Ellen, Melissa and I) walked a few blocks to the shuttle, rode it to the game and tried to take a short route to where Bob was waiting. Halfway around the stadium, an official-looking guy in a suit (perhaps Secret Service?) came up out of nowhere and told us that we needed to start walking in another direction. So the shortcut became a diversion. The crowd around Alltel Stadium was a mix of fans and corporate sponsors. A lot more Eagles jerseys were seen than Patriot jerseys. A couple of fans had painted their faces green or blue...and one guy even had a freshly-cut mowhak dyed green (I told Ellen that's something people do when they LOSE bets). One attractive lady was yelling up to Marcus Allen (seen in the media section) asking for a free ticket. When he shook his head, she hollered, "Come on! I'm a Raiders fan!" A guy was selling ticket holders, and Ken said he'd be happy to buy one if it came with a ticket inside. Everywhere, people were trying to get tickets...A father holding a sign saying that he promised his kid a trip to the game if he made good grades...people saying nothing but holding up one, two or three fingers...a man standing by the lines leading away from the shuttles asking, "Whatcha gonna do with your extra tickets?"...pretty young ladies showing just enough cleavage to get noticed (which worked for them when they tried to get into many of the "exclusive" parties that week). The only thing missing: sellers. Jacksonville has a law saying that a ticket cannot be resold for more that $1 over face value and the papers mentioned that the police would be looking out, but it didn't appear that anybody was even coyly looking to sell any. That's a big change from every other sporting event I've ever been to (even some Jaguar games at the same stadium), where hawkers are visible for blocks. We finally weaved through the crowd and got to the corner where Bob said he was waiting...but I didn't know what Bob looked like and nobody seemed to be looking around for us. Turns out Bob was making a beer run. Funny thing, though...neither Ken nor I had ever met Bob before, but I knew it was him as he walked towards us with a couple extra cups of beer. Bob apologized to Ken for being unable to secure an extra ticket and we spent about 20 minutes together before Bob and his sons begin making their way into the stadium. Before leaving, Bob mentioned that he was very impressed with my adopted home city and its people, and not to take any of the dirt slung our way from out-of-town sportswriters as the festivities We made our way out of the crowd and ended up watching the first half of the game at a place called Fast Boys Wings. The place was a 4-minute drive from the house, so we watched the coin flip at my house and the kickoff at the restaurant. Melissa needed to go to bed, so the second half of the game was viewed from the comfort of my living room. Ken stayed around for a couple more days. While Ellen went to work and took our car, Ken was gracious (or trusting?) enough to let me drive him around -- perhaps he figured I'd be better at getting us there thatn having to give directions. On Monday I showed him the card store that had been closed on Saturday and he found a stack of '70 and '71 Kelloggs including Ernie Banks and Brooks Robinson for $20. On Tuesday, we met up with Larry Tipton for a few moments at the other sports card store. I brought along my wantlist this time and found a bunch of 1973 Topps high #s for 50 cents apiece (brought my '73 wantlist down to 20!). On Wednesday, I returned to work and Ken began his trip North. But I enjoyed playing host for a few days. I got to show off my collection (which only takes a few moments), my hobby writings and the city I've called home since 1996. I also had the great experience of discussing the hobby, cards in general and OBC stuff with another OBCer. Plus, I was able to make him take some stuff with him as he left. If anybody else in OBC ever feels the need to visit Jacksonville (or simply need a place to crash before finishing a trip to Miami or Orlando), my guest room is always available to you. I can't guarantee complete Southern hospitality (considering I'm a New York native married to a Brooklyn Jew, with a normally active 6 year-old daughter and a dog and cat who still need to learn how to get along), but you'll still be welcome. Plus, I may end up making you take some stuff home as well! Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. I'm not going to pretend to speak for Canadians...but I do know from my many trips across the border into Kingston, Ontario that they can get really testy if you pull out your U.S. currency and refer to it as "American money." The nearest thing I can tell is that they consider themselves American, too, but I know that when visiting our fine neighbors to the North...NEVER, NEVER say "American money" when "U.S. currency" will suffice. But to answer your question...I'm sure they would know a letter is being directed to the USA when there are no letters in the ZIP code. Waiting for the forthcoming emails from Grant and Paul Biggs reminding that I'd have been Canadian too if I had only been born 35 miles father north... All the emails, advice, and offers to help were really amazing. After posting here last night, you can all imagine that I was very shaken and distraught. First thing I did was naturally to call my parents, who were extremely supportive as they always are. My mom kept telling me that it wasn't the worst thing that could happen, and while I reacted to that statement initially with anger, I realized it was true after cooling down after a while. Actually, the support of my parents proved that this was true - my dad insisted that he take the 3 hour drive to montreal on a snowy highway so that I wouldnt have to deal with this catastrophe alone. He knows how much of me is invested in my collection, or at least he knows now. My family is way more important than cards, and this situation only brought that reality into better focus. I then called the police, who told me an officer would show up soon, but not HOW soon. So I waited a hellish 2 hours here in my apartment reading the board and watching people respond to my post before the officer showed up. Name was Luc Marticotte, who is basically your francophone version of Ray Romano. I'm no forensic expert, and I'm pretty sure Luc wasn't either, but it didnt take much to realize that this was a very clean entrance and departure, with no signs of forceable entry. The only things out of place were the two boxes I held the cards in. The one that I keep in my dresser was in my bedroom and the tupperwear container where I hold all my childhood stuff was without it's top, on my couch. The only way anyone got into the apartment was by picking the front lock, which is doable, or by entering through the kitchen window, which is my suspicion. I forgot to lock the damn window. Ray Romano looked around, wrote the basics on his theft report, and left after 10 minutes with the two boxes that my cards were in. He's gonna look for fingerprints, but I'm dubious. I have a feeling that these lackeys aren't gonna do jack for me. In terms of helpful and agressive intervention by the police in matters of theft, I think that the Montreal police force is is far less rigorous than what most of you are used to. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyways, my dad showed up about 45 minutes later, and since I hadnt eaten all day, we went to my pet restraunt closeby, Alto's. Not much to look at, but they're cheap, great service, and they work hard for a living. And they make a great cheeseburger and poutine. After dinner I wanted to keep my mind off the cards, so we went and rented "Raising Arizona" on dvd. I was drained, and couldnt focus on the movie so we both just went to bed, my dad refusing bed to my junk ass couch. It was white when I got it, now it's a creamy brown. When we woke up in the morning, I posted here, and then wrote out a notice in english and french to hand around to all the pawn shops. I included a complete list and a page of colour scans of some of my heartbreakers. n162 kelly top left. So I spent today handing these out around town, and also to my apeish, white ponytailed, "philo-semetic" (dad's words) landloard Orel. He's a christian who loves jews, which means special treatment pour moi, but that's another story. Orel wasn't much help, but he talked his head off to us like he usually does. Sent out an urgent email to Gerry Chartrand, who is one of the only major card dealers in this area...mostly hockey though. This nhl lockout must be screwing him large, btw. He hasn't gotten back to me yet. I suppose I will continue passing out these notices around town, antique shops, junk shops, coin shops, whatever. I was amazed at the influx of emails I got from everyone last night and today. I havent been able to write back as I've been too sad/busy to write out that many emails but I will be in touch with all of you of course. This is truly an amazing group of collectors, thank you so much. I know people have said it alot in the past, "it's only cardboard", but I guess I'll have to discover if that's for real. I finally had to threaten him with negative feedback to get him to prvide me with his address. His response was that I should have followed auction helper's easy direction (which completely ignored my telling him that my PC simply could not use the program, consistent with my other PC troubles of late) and that he would give me negative feedback for slow payment. My last response was telling him that his slow payment feedbackwould make make him look like an idiot, considering that I sent him a half dozen emails requesting his address. Hi Brock, the smr lists this card in nm/mt psa 8 condition at 400. Wow! Figured I'd pile on here... PSA-heads are funny about "populations" and SMR values. For what it's worth, "1 of 1" means that nobody has (yet) submitted another card that matched the grade. That doesn't necessarily mean it'll never be met or exceeded; it just means that -- at this moment -- PSA hasn't graded a better card. Since this discounts GAI/SCG/BVG and any potential future grades, it's presumptuous, but that's a good adjective for many PSA-heads. To take this example to the ridiculous extreme... I have mentioned often here about my "dog pound" set -- the 1958 Topps I have been building cheaply. One of the cards in my binder is #292, Ned Garver. We here in OBC know of Ned from his cameo in "The Book" and the fact that he won 20 games with a terrible '51 Browns team. Getting back to the card...my '58 Topps Garver card has been embellished by a former owner. With the help of a fine-tip marker, Ned now resembles Liza Minelli in "Cabaret." I'm not going to try to get a PSA slab for this card (I can hear them laughing all the way from California if I did...), but I could go ahead and call my Garver card a "rare 1 of 1" card (technically a fact). Can I put it on eBay and auction if off as: RARE 1 OF 1 OBC-FAMOUS 1958 TOPPS #292 NED GARVER KC Certainly. I can do that and I won't be violating anybody (or even being fraudulent if I provided a scan that let potential bidders see the card in all its glory). But I guarantee I have as much chance of selling it for $200 as this seller has selling the Post Gibson card for his asking price. Take care, PS: if I were to send in a 2005 Topps Sammy Sosa card and get it back as a PSA2...I could sell that off as a "rare 1 of 1" card as well! --- Peter Mead wrote: > Response to your question for item #5169043419 - > 1963 Post Cereal Bob Gibson #166 - PSA 8! - 1of 1! > Wow!yet another response from mr PSA 8 > ----- Original Message ----- > From: risetothetop@hotmail.com > To: hoot-owl@comcast.net > Sent: Friday, February 25, 2005 7:21 PM > Subject: Response to your question for item > #5169043419 - 1963 Post Cereal Bob Gibson #166 - PSA > 8! - 1of 1! This is the last call for OBCers. Send me an email if interested. No offense guys (This is a friendly email.) but this seller has valid points "IF" his info is true about SMR ($400), PSA (8 & none higher), ebay (past results) etc. He has also showed great patience with your emails :-) Keep in mind that I appreciate PSA stuff & Tipton stuff. It's all about supply & demand. I don't blame him for trying to get as much as he can for the card. FYI, I only have maybe 4 PSA cards in my collection. If he overprices it & it doesn't sell then he can list later at a lower price & no harm done. If he sells it for $100 & could have gotten $200 then he lost $100 is not a good business man in my opinion. Why not start with a high price? Now I have not checked the guy's feedback & such but this is based just on the emails I've seen. Do I think the prices are high? Yes! But somebody payed $400 before if I understand it correctly, right? So $440-$500 would be a smart BIN I'd say. Also lots of cards are listed lower in SCD than they actually sell for on ebay, even if ungraded. I'm not going to mention the exact card but I saw a card that lists for $2 NM in SCD go for $14 last month in one auction. That is 7 times the book price but in my opinion is the more correct value but just not what I will pay. I bought the same card the next week on a card specialty site for $1 (EXC) which is what SCD says it's worth. How it is marketed is a big key & the dealer knowing what he really has. I agree $400 is ridiculous but my advice is if you have 60s cards in NM cond, get them graded & auction them (unless they were a RAOK) then use the money to by Tiptons if that is what you like :-) This is the way I see it (Free Enterprise) but if I have any of the facts wrong (I may have missed a message), I apologize. BTW, did anyone see the Leno skit last night that they do every 2 weeks where they show stuff they find on ebay? Who was the fool that bought the OUJI SOUP BOWL that takes your alphabet letters & sends you messages in your soup?! The 1st message was probably "YOU'RE AN IDIOT!". http://groups.yahoo.com/group/card-variations (Bob Lemke of SCD, V&E expert Dick Gilkeson, Simeon Lipman [Antiques Road Show?], Randy Trieweiler (discovered the 68 McCormick YL) plus a Beckett executive are in this group! For about $75, I won 46 1947-66 Exhibits including Berra, two Brandts, Daley, Kaline, Killibrew (misspelled version), Mays, McDougald, Musial, Roberts, and Snider. I had done a 1963 Post search, and found a lot of 11 cards that included Bunning, Lee Thomas, Haller, Drysdale, Clemente, and Burdette. The seller mentioned Clemente in the title, but not the shortprints. So I decided to look at his "other auctions" and found the Exhibits. Sometimes there is a pony in the pile.....
