The newer stuff is called MSN TV & will not do as much as the older WEBTV stuff so I recommend buying an older unit off ebay. I got mine (MAT972 model) for under $80 with S&H (I think) off ebay & have been using it for about 4 years now. Much more simple to use than my PC but as mentioned it is limited & not compatible with some webites or large emails. For example I can not fully load the directory email you sent out recently as I get PAGE TOO LARGE TO BE SHOWN. It shows down to about the Fs I think. The plain text version I use to get worked. I unearthed some cards I had stored 2 days ago & I plan on hitting some lists (no joke! quit laughing!) of those I owe in the next 6 days, so as Bob said...update those want lists! Helmer does have him in their Crowns and Labels so maybe he will be in the next series of cards. Most of the Negro League, Japanese, and Benton Harbor cards have markings on the uniforms and/or caps. None of the cards of major league players showany markings on the uniform. I'm guessing that is to avoid having to pay big bucks to MLB for the right to do so. What this means is, you will not find Moe Burg, Lefty Grove, Jimmy Foxx, or any other Boston player in a Boston Uniform. In various issues (crowns, carriers, labels) Grove and Foxx are listed as either Boston or Philadelphia, but the pictures are the same (i.e., Grove, Boston and Grove, Philadelphia both use the same picture). Other than the bland uniforms, the art work on these cards is very good. I asked the dealer if he'd take $30 but he blew me off. Maybe someone in OBC would like it at this price? Believe it or not, I'm learning to be patient about high dollar cards. I DONT want anyone to be sneaky and buy it for me. Do that and I'll pay you back plus I'll feel like I come across as looking for a handout. And no group efforts with a card received from Stan Hack either. I can set aside some money each week for the card but even so, its not worth $45 to me right now. Of the 22 deaths, (that I am aware of, to date), I beleive 18 of them were in the trailor court. One of the deceased was Mrs. Julie Dean, who perished along with her mother and grandson. But a handful of old timers still gather at 9 a.m. in what's left of the Bottomley Ruffing Schalk Baseball Museum, which narrowly escaped destruction after a fire struck the building next door in August. Six mornings a week, the men sit around a table in the unheated shell, sipping coffee, shooting the breeze and planning a dream that may seem ludicrous to some. They want to rebuild a baseball museum almost nobody visits. To get the job done, the museum directors may have to find more than $30,000--or nearly four times the institution's yearly budget. "We've got a way to go," said Jim Eisenbarth, a retired history teacher and vice president of the BRS Baseball Museum. "It's very slow and challenging." The museum started in 1981 as a display in a local diner window to honor two Hall of Famers who played for the White Sox--pitcher Charles "Red" Ruffing and catcher Ray Schalk--and Hall of Fame first baseman James "Sunny" Bottomley, a St. Louis Cardinal most of his career. All of them were born or raised in or very near Nokomis and were major-league stars during the first half of the 20th century. But few people seem to care. Beyond a group of local 4th graders who pass through on a yearly field trip, the museum gets about 24 visitors a year. "The good thing is, occasionally, we get a stranger who really shows an interest," said Eisenbarth, 63. "When that happens, it gives us kind of a big lift." Reasons for the meager attendance vary. Some say interest in baseball among young people is weak. Some say few people know the BRS Museum exists. Others say Nokomis, a town of about 2,400 people 235 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, is too remote. The museum elders have heard all that, yet they maintain belief in their scruffy, quirky institution. Eisenbarth calls it a "treasure." He and others contend the place could spark long-dormant community spirit and tourism in a county that ranks among the state's lowest in per capita income and a town enduring a steady population decline. "I think it's pride," said Museum Treasurer Myron Schaefer, 79, a retired bank examiner and attorney. "It's tradition. ... We're going to lose the whole town if we don't keep this going." Added museum board member Don Tooley, 79, a lifetime resident of Nokomis, retired teacher and contractor: "I attach a lot of importance to things handed down, and this is one thing that can keep Nokomis in the forefront of the public." `We really need this place' John Bailey, 84, of Nokomis, who is planning to join the board next year, said he feels obligated to continue the hard work of those who have gotten the BRS Museum this far. "We got so little going in a community like this that we really need this place," he said. Besides, Bailey added, "We just enjoy shooting the breeze" in the museum. For now, the inside of the BRS Museum looks as if someone started to move in then thought twice about it. Items are scattered and piled on tables and cabinets on the beige pattern carpet. Floral and burnt-orange couches and lounge chairs are pushed toward the back. Somewhere in the disarray, however, are tributes, memorabilia and gear from Hall of Famers Bottomley, Ruffing and Schalk, three local boys who became baseball heroes. Bottomley, given the nickname "Sunny" for his pleasant disposition, had a .310 batting average during his 15-year major-league career in the 1920s and 30s. He set a record by driving in 12 runs in one game and holds the record for the most unassisted double plays by a first baseman in one year: eight. Ruffing lost four toes on his left foot while working in a coal mine around Nokomis, became a pitcher and suffered through six years of odious performances in the major leagues. But he persevered and became one of the game's most successful pitchers in the 1930s and '40s with the New York Yankees before retiring with the White Sox in 1947. A catcher and manager for the White Sox from 1912 until 1928, Schalk stood only 5 feet 7 inches but was one of the most durable players at an injury-plagued position. He led the league in fielding percentage eight times and putouts nine times. His record for stolen bases by a catcher stood for 66 years. In a publicity stunt, he once caught a ball tossed from the top of the Tribune Tower. Although Bottomley, Ruffing and Schalk are the museum's focus, the collection has grown and the mission has expanded. During the museum's 24-year existence, visitors may have been scarce, but donations of items have been robust. Fire damaged building To accommodate all that generosity, the museum has moved five times. Its current, somewhat unstable, home is the former Living Waters Church. When fire broke out in the building next door on Aug. 15 and led to its demolition about two months later, much of the roof and east wall of the two-story museum was lost. The slightly more than 3,000 items covering more than 80 central Illinois ballplayers and dozens of other baseball people, some with no connection to the area, were saved and remain on haphazard display. The collective result is an intriguing, odd, obscure, even comical assortment of baseball artifacts. Photographs, autographed baseballs and caps, and biographies on local boys who made it to the big leagues or came close are featured. Autographed photos of Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Joe DiMaggio also are on display. So is a photo of Cyril "Cy" Wadzita, who played for Millikin University in Decatur in the first half of the last century. Former Cubs Manager Tom Trebelhorn and Milwaukee Brewers announcer and funnyman Bob Uecker also have contributed autographed photos. A few steps from Bottomley's gloves is an Illinois High School Association umpire's shirt. A bat used by Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Edd Roush, who broke into the major leagues in 1913 with the White Sox, is in a case about 8 feet from two lawn chairs woven with red, white and blue rope honoring the 1998 home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. On one side of a cabinet is the Litchfield (Ill.) News-Herald from July 25, 1955, announcing "Ray Schalk Makes Hall of Fame." On the other, a DVD of "The Jackie Robinson Story," starring Robinson as himself. A plastic seat back and bottom from Busch Stadium in St. Louis are propped against a pole. A Wheaties box commemorating Hank Aaron and an official program from the 1931 World Series are on display, as is a 1981 pennant from the Montreal Expos. "We're easy," said a shrugging Eisenbarth, with a smirk, when asked to explain the reach of his museum. Questions over costs But the task ahead is difficult. It remains unclear exactly how much of the museum's $58,000 insurance policy the institution will receive. Schaefer, Eisenbarth and Museum President Tom Fly are determining how much it will cost to restore the structure or raze the museum and rebuild a new one. If the museum receives its full $58,000, demolishing the building and cleaning the items would leave about $17,500 to build a new museum, thousands of dollars short of the total needed, said Fly, who, at 44, is the rookie of the group. Schaefer, the treasurer, said the museum is about $21,000 "underinsured." How they plan to come up with the necessary funding is as uncertain as the path of a knuckleball. Directors said they will tackle that question after they receive the estimates and formulate a plan. But the group remains optimistic. They maintain that they have come this far with very little support and will persevere through this setback. Then, perhaps, people will appreciate the patchwork baseball treasure inside 121 W. State St., they said. "We'll rise out of the ruins," Eisenbarth said. "I really believe there will be a more attractive, appealing museum as a result. I won't think the other way. I'm not going to do it." A RAMBLED STORY BY SOMEONE WHO HATED ENGLISH CLASS (lol) ----- As some of you may know I had the great honor of meeting and spending the day with Helmar president Charles Mandel last weekend at his home/office. I was greeted at the driveway by his dog (who looks exactly like the dog from 'My dog Skip' movie). We went to his parlor where we started to talk baseball almost immediately. He told me about his passion for the old stuff and what he wanted to do by releasing the Helmar card set. I learned some interesting facts about the cards, the beer and Mr. Mandel himself. First off, there will be no more distribution in retail till the spring as most (if not all) the distributors see his product as a 'baseball season' product only. But should be able to keep ordering the chips the way most of you seem to be doing already. He's in negations with a distribution company that will bring the product all over the Midwest and in other parts of the USA. The beer is being distributed in Japan at this time, which is very cool! He went into his office where he handed me a huge stack of 10x8 original art of all the cards, plus art that didn't make it and of cards to be made in the future. Some of the art at last minute was changed from the original work to what you have on the card, it was very interesting to see and hear some stories like. If you look at the picture of Babe Ruth batting http://www.helmarbrewing.com/bio%20ruth%20swinging.htm you'll notice to the far right in the background that building was supposed to be the Nations Capitol building, but the lawyers for Mr. Ruth said the rounded top looked too much like a temple in the middle east and didn't want anyone to be confused buy and make any interpretations that it may bring against the Babe Ruth legacy so it was removed and replaced. With a flat topped building in the final picture. I also saw 'alternative' paintings of players that weren't used, and paintings of players that they couldn't get the rights to use for one reason or another. What was real special was to see some that will be released in the next series!! I asked him why he choose the players he did and said he didn't want to do another 'best of, greatest players' run of the mill set with all the players that are usually used in vintage tribute sets. He told me how much of a fan he is of the older cards too and loved the nostalgic feeling he gets from this project. And to paraphrase a statement of his ' I don't care if no one buys them, I made this set for me and people like me who enjoy the game of baseball' , ( I believe right in line with the OBC way of collecting I think :-)). One of the things I asked was why the cards were so thick was it just because of the paper he wanted to use to have them stand up to being shipped in chip bags? And I got the greatest answer..It's so no one can put them in plastics to protect them!! So they would have to be handled and treated like the old ones were when they came out!! He is so shocked to see the prices some of them are going for and just shook his head at the thought of the day he see's one of his cards in a PSA case. He keeps his own personal set in a old cigar box, in no plastic or anything (OBC style). As a insiders note: I was telling him how much I like the old Goudeys and the old Goudey Indian set, his eyes lit up, he said he wants to add some Indians in this series but was afraid people would be turned off by them. He has had his art dept do some art of Indians in the card styles that maybe added to the next series. We talked about my background in art and how I loved the old movie posters and such, he too is interested in this and said he's in designing stages of a magician themed beer label and card set!! (Turn of the century of course) I keep pushing him to do it as this was very exciting to me. Some how we got on the discussion about the Helmar brewing web page and I mentioned that me and my brother have designed web pages in a small company since 1995. Let just say.the Helmar Brewing company web site will look completely made over in the next couple weeks!! (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more, say no more) Where we were talking, on the wall he has a museum quality framed 'original' hand written lyrics of 'America the beautiful' by Katharine Lee Bates. It's VERY nice. And some images and hand written letters from some of our early presidents! Very interesting items! In leaving he went back to his office and came back with presents for me. I received 2 bags of each flavor chips and caramel corn, a promotional standup of Babe Ruth (this image, but in a die cut standup instead of poster http://helmarbrewing.com/collectibles%20dealer%20poster%201%20Ruth.htm) and a full case of the 'Big League Brew", but not a normal case, this is 1 of only 40 cases made of un pasteurized beer, pure freshness! I know I'm not a writer and probably rambled more then told a story but it was a great day spent there talking baseball cards and baseball. Oh also, he said he was un aware that packs were missing in bags of chips that he would get in contact with the packaging company and the packs that were short cards as the cards are made and packaged in a completely different place as well. And that they are working on the collation problems with the cards and prizes. Also, who ever sent him cards with their payment he wanted to thank you very much, it made his day! He said he has no problem adding a link to the OBC site either (as I'll be doing the site anyways) but should defiantly bring us a huge amount of traffic. I know theres a million things I'm leaving out that I wanted to tell you all, I may just send out another ramble again soon (FAIR --God Bless, Scott 'Squirrel' Earle answer them maybe and spending all day wit ================= Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2005 10:21:21 EST To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OCTraders@yahoogroups.com, From: smartalecx@aol.com Subject: sun times show if i'm not mistaken, the sun times show should be this weekend at the rosemont convention center. if anyone is interested in meeting up on saturday, please let me know. gary mandell ================= To: "'ken goetsch'" , Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2005 07:26:17 -0800 From: "Grant" Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] Another great e-bay auction That is one HOT auction all right=85.. -----Original Message----- From: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com [mailto:OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of ken goetsch Sent: Monday, November 14, 2005 5:09 AM To: obc Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Another great e-bay auction Now here is an auction to talk about. Shawn Adkins sends over two packages - one containing numerous hits to my Helmar set and the other bearing two tipton variations to my vintage sets - a 1950 Bowman high number and a variation in my 49/49 Leaf set that I didn't even know about until Shawn pointed it out a couple weeks ago. Some of the Helmar cards Shawn sent had the $5 coupons scratched off on the back - all 96 of the cards I got in my case were of the $1 variety. I have no plans to go after both sets... one seems like enough of a challenge. The package from Dave Fallen also got here while I was away. It also contained a few more Helmars for my set, although I don't have access to the list at the moment, so I can't tell how far away I am. None of these cards were scratched however, so being the somewhat strict OBC'er that I am, I got to scratching - and I won a NEW CAR!! OK, it wasn't a new car (although that would've been a neat prize). I did reveal a spot that read "T-Shirt" though. It was on the back of a card depicting Dennis Biddle, who also happened to be in the package Shawn sent. Now I have a dupe - anyone want a T-shirt? I figure I'll send it back to Dave unless he doesn't want it. Otherwise, I'll have to devise some clever contest to give it away. One other delivery of note was an eBay purchase of 3 dozen T205's including a few variations and HOF'ers (Matty, Clarke, Tinker, Wallace, Brown) in low grade at just under $15/card. I was hoping for a few Polar Bear backs or some upgrades, but almost all were Piedmont backs and I think I only got one upgrade out of the lot... I *DO* have some really cool trade bait now though :-) As far as the trip itself, I had a really good time in Orlando. The weather couldn't have been nicer, with highs in the low 80's and not a minute of rain the entire ten days I was there (they should rename it the Sunshine State or... oh, never mind). The first eight days I spent at the Days Inn near the Convention Center. I got a good deal on the room through priceline.com and the hotel even accomodated our request for a non-smoking room with two beds at no additional charge. (My cousin and I got booked for a smoking room with one bed). What they didn't have on the website was the free wireless internet access... OK, so the signal I got was from the Convention Center across the street and it didn't come in very strong or very constantly, but I got what I paid for... beat paying 87 cents a call to use dialup - and I wasn't there to use the computer a whole lot anyway. We saw three days at Disney and a couple more at Universal Studios (we didn't even use the free extra day we got with our tickets). The last two days were spent at the Sheraton a block away. Cost of the room was free - a gift from my home security company for switching my payment method to direct withdrawal from my checking account. (Funny thing is that I had previously paid them using a credit card which took money out of the same checking account.) That room also came with high speed internet, but this was a good signal from the hotel. Only problem was that my power adaptor suddenly didn't work. I took my laptopn to a local Apple store and had the tech take a look at it. He plugged it in and it started charging right up. Obviously it was my plug (from my previous laptop), which I then learned wasn't supposed to be used with the newer model... good to know after almost a year. The other adaptor was still brand new, laying in a box along with the remaining pieces of my old laptop at my brother's house in North Carolina. I had boxed everything up and sent it to him for him to sell on eBay. Fortunately, my brother has procrastinated on actually putting it up for sale even longer than I ever would have. He's sending me the plug in the mail, which will hopefully be here by this weekend, In the meantime, you'll have to put up with me typing up long notes on the old computer - old habits are hard to break. One of the things I liked about turning on the old machine after such a long time (about three years since I've used it I think) was reading some of the old e-mails I've saved from this group over the years. Due to the demise of my previous laptop, none of these were ever transferred to the new machine. It was really nice seeing the thank you notes from my last mass mailing, which I'm ashamed to say was probably three years ago? Although I probably couldn't get away with a mailing like I'm accustomed to doing, I should at least send out a package to let a few people out there know I'm still in the group. I still owe each of our most recent members a package too. Maybe this turn of events will help me return to some other old paractices? I know I can't spend all day playing online poker on this bucket of bolts. Plus I only have like 5 hours of dialup time allowed before I start getting charged extra by AOL (with the BYOA plan). Hopefully I can find a browser that won't crash (or take all day) trying to view a couple wantlists. Now that you've read this far, does it seem a little like old times to you too? Oldcardboard.com has the set designation, but no interior pictures. It could be one of two sets, the Big League Movies or the Thum Movies. http://www.oldcardboard.com/r/r326/r326.asp?cardsetID=884 http://www.oldcardboard.com/r/r342/r342.asp?cardsetID=895 As I recall, the Big League Movies split each movie into two parts, so you needed both books for the whole sequence. The Thum Movies combined both parts into one book. Since your book starts with a half-completed swing, you have a "part 2" book from the Big League Movies series. Knowing that it's a batter narrows it down a little, but not much. Anyone else have a guess? P.S. Most notable for this set is the printing of a Joe DiMaggio, which matches or pre-dates his 1938 Goudey card. Yahoo! Hi all, I noticed the FedEx truck outside my door yesterday. I was awaiting the power pack for my laptop, which was supposed to arrive via USPS, so it was somewhat of a surprise to get a delivery. I was pretty sure I didn't have anything from eBay coming (at least not that I paid for). I tore open the package and found a very sharp looking catalogue from entitled "Important Sports Memorabilia and Cards" from Sotheby's with SCP Auctions. (Note: I couldn't find out what the SCP stands for in this case, but I'm guessing is may stand for "Shocking Card Prices") The auction is slated for Dec. 10th and is also on eBay live auctions. There's over 240 full color pages covering the 355 lots, most of which are expected to bring a MINIMUM of $2000 EACH. I noted on the inside cover that the catalogue itself retails for $31 at the gallery, $36 by mail and $41 for overseas bidders. I think if we all pooled our money, we might be able to afford one lot out of the entire catalogue... and don't forget the 20% hammer fee on top of our winning bid... plus NY sales tax... oh, and did I mention There are some neat items in here, starting with the first lot - 8 autographed cabinet cards featuring original Boston Red Stockings players from 1871/72 (Estimated at $50-60K). There's also some complete sets and near sets of oddball/regional issues like Rodeo Meats, Dan Dee Chips, Glendale Hot Dogs as well as some of the more traditional Topps and Bowman sets. They're even auctioning off Joe Jackson's "Black Betsy" bat. There was a special fold-out for that lot and the estimate was 'available upon request'. You know that's an expensive item when they didn't have enough room to put that figure on the page even with the fold out! I'll have to refrain from bidding on any of the lots, since I have other priorities to think about... like eating and a place to live. Hmmm, OR I could give up all that useless stuff and enjoy wearing Joe DiMaggio's rookie home uniform around town for a cool 600 grand or so. Oh, the decisions I have to make... For the last couple of years, my list has been at the point where it is hard to find hits at small local shows or shops, so I try to make the large shows whenever possible. The Sun-Times show turned into a major success! I found great deals on several major cards: 1954 Topps Ted Williams, 1955 Topps Mays, and 1956 Topps Mantle. I also was able to knock off a few high numbers from the 1953, 1966, and 1967 lists. With these additions, my 1953+ wantlist broke the 100 milestone! I have been telling myself for months that, when the list broke 100, I would find some new sets to add. So, the next time I circulate the list, it will likely include the 1953 Bowman B/W and color sets and (drum roll . . . ) 1952 Topps. So much for the 100 milestone. Of course the best feature of the show was the opportunity to see several OBCers. I met T.J. Valacak for the first time and caught up with George Vrechek and Gary Mandell. The four of us had lunch together. We showed off our finds from the show, exchanged news about families and collections, and generally had a blast. We talked about arranging to see games at Wrigley Field and Miller Park next season. TJ showed us where Bill Henderson's table was (somehow, Gary and I had missed it, even though we had been looking for it all morning). I showed TJ and Gary a dealer's table that had some great deals on stars and in dollar boxes. On my way out of the show, I ran into Tim Newcomb. Well folks, my worst nightmare. After a few exciting exchanges earlier today with Ken about Strat-O-Matic cards, I became extremely stoked up to headfor my storage unit (A forty mile drive to the other side of the "world.")to see if I could find my original game box and a few of my own, long lost, SOM cards. I left here around 1:30p. Now, over seven hours later, I just got back in, sad, and MINUS the box I was actually looking for. After seeing some of the latest bidding prices on a few of those older Strat teams,I was one happy lil' puppy to get into my storage unit and start my hunt. I was so absolutely "sure" I knew what the cardboard box looked like that I was looking for, but it wasn't where I thought it should be, and even after three hours of moving things around, and looking inside, some boxes overand over again, I simply could not find it. A rather large box, I thought, one large enough to nicely set one of those somewhat longer, SOM game boxes into the bottom, and securely packaged around it should have been a few shoe boxes of team cards, a dart board set, a very well loved and ragged Monopoly game, and a few other remaining pieces of worn out board games that I and my siblings played to their death from daze gone by in the 1960's. Istarted to get really discouraged, but just then, right there, staring me right in the face, was a "four shoe box" sized piece of cardboard with those magic letters, "SOM" marked on the side. I grabbed and literally RAN out of the storage unit into the waning sunshine and the tailgate of my rig to break the packing tape seal and look inside. Sure enough, inside was four, neatly and securely taped up shoe boxes with familiar scratchings and markings that I recognized from "back in the day." Not the game box I was after, but I knew I had found a hefty chunk of my team cards. I decided to leave them because I now had renewed excitement that pumped up the adrenaline enough to go back inside and continue to search some more. Alas, even after a few more hours, well into the dark and fighting dreary shadows and endless shuffling around, I could not find thatbigger box and my old, original game box. ...and then, to further send me heading toward my good ol' buddy Jim Beam, I soon learned that stupid Mr. Sentimentalist Me has left just about all ofthose past "leagues" as they were, instead of collating the cards back to their original team sets when the next years' issues were released. I havefour over-sized shoeboxes of mixed cards, mixed years, and I'm almost certain that the other half of those old leagues and mix of cards are still in the original game box, hidden away in some other cardboard box, and for whoonly knows when to be found. My intentions were to auction off some of those old cards to drum up some needed cash ... ... ... duh ya think some higher power might be trying to tell me that I really didn't want to sell those things, along with who knows how many childhood memories, after all? ... ... ... "Higher power." Yeah, right. Ha! Forget those spirits. I guess I'll have a few more REAL spirits with Mr. Beam to try to figure all this out, but, if you've taken the time to stay with me and you've made it all the way down here, it wont take many more of these spirits and you'll be able to rest easy that you wont have to deal with me again tonight. Then we'd come home, reminisce for a while about our real life successes or failures on the field, then turn right around and do it all over again. I can't even begin to remember how many weekend "marathons" we held where we never slept at all. Just like the Topps, many of those SOM cards became well loved, and there were several sets of die that we used so much, we wore the paint spots right out of the holes and kept a ready supply of nail polish handy to affixrepairs. We even played so much that we searched out a specialty game shop that sold twenty sided die because we wanted true randomization for stealing and the split results. ...and, since an eight buddy neighborhood league, along with another two man league with my brother (One that we kept alive for about eight or more years, I believe.) wasn't even enough, I even gotmyself tangled in and out of two or three play-by-mail leagues for a few years. I was truly obsessed. ...and now today, arm chair QB on Monday morning still trying to make the right call, even though I had a blast with those cards and die back then, I truly wish I would have spent the dollars that I dumped into SOM issues, on the Topps packs, instead. Today, the SOM cards are stashed away in some dusty storage location and never see the light of day, while the vintageBB cards have become so intimate in my life, I barely let them out of a line of sight from my pillow at night. Golly, keep this up, and you'll make me start to feel young again. I do remember a lot of junk mail from the company started arriving immediately after first purchasing the baseball game, and they were most definitely trying to push the basketball product. The cards mention a series fo 192, but only thefirst 48 were ever issued. They come in back variations!!!! What is it with you and cards that have variations? Cards 1-24 have English text and a Boston address. Cards 1-48 appear with English text and a Montreal address. There is a so-called Canadian back with both English and French text. Here is the Sea Raiders check list: 1. Capt. Teach (Blackbeard) 2. Captain Kidd 3. Pirate Galleon 4. Avery Discussing Plot 5. Fight for Supremacy 6. The Lookout 7. Pirate Gold 8. Charles Gibbs 9. Capt. Jean Lafitte 10. Hostages 11. Bartholemy Portuguez 12. Pierre Francois 13. Walking the Plank 14. Boarding Party 15. Scuttling the Ship 16. False Signals 17. Bringing Back the Loot 18. Mutiny of the Crew 19. Captain Misson 20. Capt. Francis Lolonois 21. Sir Francis Drake 22. Extorting Tribute 23. John Quelch 24. Sir Henry Morgan 25. John Helsey 26. John Martel 27. Raveneau De Lussan 28. John Gow 29. Richard Worley 30. Diego Grillo 31. Pierre Le Grand 32. Thomas Tew 33. John Evans 34. John Bowen 35. Edward Low 36. Nathaniel North 37. Joseph Bradish 38. Lord George Clifford 39. Thomas Howard 40. Anne Bonny 41. Mary Reed 42. Alwilda 43. Roc the Brazilian 44. Major Bonnet 45. Pirate's Legacy 46. "Dead Men Tell No Tales" 47. The Sport of Pirates 48. A Difference in Weapons Pirate Treasure (R110)- There are three types: Type 1 is small (1 3/4 x 2 3/4) and has "Save 48 pictures for a complete story of 'Pirate Treasure'" printed on the back. Type 2 is 1/4" larger on both margins (2" x 3") and is complete at 18 titles. It has "M.J. Holloway & Co." printed on the back. Type 3 (2" x 3") says "Save an entire set of 18 pictures and get a larger pirate picture suitable for framing". It has blue print on the back (the first two have black pring). I can send a check list if needed. They are pre-war, but my reference books do not put a date on them. The American Card Catalog lists them in the Candy & Gum 1933 - 1942 section. The OPC Wild West (R172) series was called "Far West Gum" and came with twodifferend color backs - tan or gray. The following description precedes mention of the Canadian version of the cards, so I'm not sure if all of it applies to the OPC version: "The cards of the Wild West Series issued by Gum, Inc. are found in two different styles. One variety, know as type 1 is printed on thin cardboard stock, has red (1-24) or blue (26-49) "Picture Puzzle Bubble Gum" panels on front, and has gray backs with a red line overlay which allowed the owner tocut the card into a miniature puzzle. Type 2 cards are printed on heaver stock, have the product name in a white panel on front, have tan stock backs without the puzzle line overprint, and are only found in the 26-49 sequence. Type 1 cards in the 1-24 sequence indicate a series of 24; both type 1and type 2 cards in the 26-49 run are marked as a series of 49. The missing link, card No. 25, was a special limited edition card which entitled thefinder to a prize, and it was released in an extremely limited number by the manufacturer. It is not considered one of the regular cards in the set but is avidly sought after as one of the rarest of all non-sport cards. ... The set was also issued in Canada by O-Pee-Chee with two different French/English language backs." I could send a check list of these also if you wish. Sorry, I didn't find anything on "Papoose" or "The Harry Horne Co.". I'll keep -Dave Fallen ----- Original Message ----- From: Grant To: 'obc' Sent: Monday, November 21, 2005 4:59 PM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Vintage Non-Sport cards, mostly Canadian... A good friend of mine in Miami just sent me a copy of this letter he sent to the paper. Can anyone help him? In regard to the recent announcement that the possible location of a new baseball park near the Orange Bowl being a dead issue, I agree with columnist Cote that this is a positive, rather than a negative for South Florida. The Orange Bowl location was a mistake from the "get-go" and cost the Marlins valuable time in getting a needed new stadium built. As a long-time regular usher at Marlins games, I have had the opportunity frequently talk with avid hard-core baseball fans. These are the people who make up the basic fan base of major league baseball in South Florida----and the vast majority of them expressed great disappointment with the possible Orange Bowl location. A site near Dolphins Stadium is ideal because it is near the center of the South Florida population base and is already served by major transportation arteries. Plus ample vacant land is available. Based on attendance at Dolphins games and attractive Marlins regular-season and playoff this LOCATION is a proven success However, the need for a retractable domed stadium for baseball is imperative. The above-mentioned fans will attend come rain or shine. But the current uncovered stadium makes it too easy for theGREAT MULTITUDE of "fair weather" fans to sit at home and opt to watch the games on TV. Rain is NOT the key problem. The key problem is the very frequent THREAT of rain. Take away threat with a retractable dome and chances will greatly increase that the "fair weather folks" will attend on a regular basis. Couple this, along with amore favorable revenue-producing lease, and we have the foundation for a long-term successful major league baseball franchise in South Florida. So elected officials in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Jeffrey Loria and Wayne Huizenga; quickly and successfully bring this new stadium in the preferred location to fruition. I certainly do not want to move to Portland to usher future Marlins games !
