My focus is going to shift a bit this year from prewar to my Topps and Bowman runs. I'm now at about 1950 cards to finish the 52-80 Topps run and at about 1500 to finish the 48 to 55 Bowman run. I'd like to get to at least 1500 on the Topps run and maybe 1200 on the Bowman run. As for Prewar sets, I've been stuck on most of these for a while but would like to at least finish the 33 Goudey set (minus 3 Ruths and both Gehrigs and the Lajoie) with a Hack Wilson and cut the 33 Canadian Goudey list in half from 4 to 2. Anything else added would be gravy. It'll be interesting to see where my list is next January. Not for the easily bored! As many of you are aware, some years ago I started setting myself annual targets to shoot for on each main set I’m working on. I try to keep things realistic based on how many and which cards I still need. It’s proved to be a pretty neat little system to work to, and gives me some sense of achievement each time I reach a target. 2004 proved to be another excellent year target-wise. Most of the success was of course due to OBC, with a little Ebaying and some dealer purchases thrown in here and there. Here’s a quick summary: 1960T: Target 85%, Achieved 90.0%. My birthyear set. This was a HUGE SUCCESS. I never thought that I would actually be getting within striking distance of completion quite so soon. 1961T: Target 77%, Achieved 75.6%. Came up just 8 cards short on this one. Not too bad though, considering that most of what remains are stars, semi-hi, and high numbers. 1962T: Target 80%, Achieved 81.6%. SUCCESS! 1963T: Target 80%, Achieved 74.1%. 34 cards short. I didn’t realise how difficult it was to come by those mid-series and semi-hi cards! 1964T: Target 80%, Achieved 78.9%. Only 7 cards short. I didn’t really concentrate too much on this set in 2004, so I kind of consider this a moderate success. 1965T: Target 75%, Achieved 75.4%. SUCCESS! Still lots of commons to go on this one, but again it’s surprising how tricky it is to find reasonably priced mid-series cards. 1966T: Target 84%, Achieved 81.8%. 14 cards short, including almost the complete hi series of which I only have 10 cards. 1967T: Target 87%, Achieved 87.4%. SUCCESS! I’m really happy about this one. The ‘67s are great cards. Once again, it’s mostly those pesky hi numbers that remain. 1972T: Target 100%, Achieved 99.5%. I’m going to call this a SUCCESS! Of the 4 cards that remain, Steve Rittenberg informed me just a few days ago that he has acquired 2 on my behalf. Just 702 Pagan IA and 711 Bonds to go. 1979T: Target 85%, Achieved 98.8%. SUCCESS! My only “All-OBC” set, only 9 cards from completion. Target for 2005 will be 100%. 1985T: Target 90%, Achieved 99.1%. SUCCESS! With apologies, I’m sneaking this one in. Only 7 cards to go. My 1960-1980 Topps run total dropped from 1387 to 928. Definitely a 2004 also saw some terrific progress on a wide variety of insert sets and others that I tend not to put targets on. My only COMPLETED set of the year was the 1964T Giants, which I knocked off thanks to a couple of opportune Ebay purchases. How did the others go? Well….. 1964 StandUps: No progress. Boy, these are tough to come by! 1965 Embossed: NEW SET! I just started this one in 2004, winning a large lot on Ebay. Add in a few OBC contributions, and I’m already up to 62.5% 1969 Decals: Wow!! Big SUCCESS! I can’t believe that I picked up 12 of these throughout the year. A bunch came from a trade out of the blue from a guy who came across my wantlist on the OBC Website. Oh, and the Mantle came courtesy of young Mr. Rittenberg. 1970T & 1971T Super: NEW SETS! I picked up 15 and 13 respectively of these during the Vegas weekend. Low priority. 1971T Coins: I actually did set a target of 79% for this set, but came up well short (76.5%). 1970 Kelloggs: I LOVE Kelloggs cards. I wasted boxes and boxes of Corn Flakes to get these when I was a kid. I picked up another 4 in 2004. Only 5 to go (Rose, Seaver, Aparicio, Stargell, Banks). 1971 Kelloggs: It seems that these have suddenly become a bit easier to find! I hit this list 26 times this past year. 68% complete. 24 to go! 1972 Kelloggs: Picked up 2, leaving only 3 to go (Rose, Williams, Clemente). Another one to be completed in 2005. 1970 Fleer World Series: Incredibly, I didn’t knock any of these off at all! Still 5 to go. 1971 Fleer World Series: 3 of these came my way, taking this set up to 60.3% Of my Tigers Top Ten lists, 3 of the 10 from December 2003 “Achievables” were bumped, while 1 from the “Needs Some Work” list was added to the Eight autographed 8x10s of Detroit Tigers and Red Wings players made their way into the collection, which now stands at 138 items. Thanks in great part to the efforts of that man Rittenberg again, I also made some great inroads on both hockey and football sets. In 2003, Ron Perry kicked off (of should that be faced off?) my hockey collecting with 3 OPC starter sets (69/70, 70/71, and 71/72). Steve not only added to these, but also got me going on 71/72 Topps and 72/73 OPC. He also got me up and running on 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972 Football. I have a lot to thank Steve for. With so many of my baseball sets getting down to high numbers and star cards, I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to add “volume” to my collection through working on those hockey and football sets. Towards the end of the year, I was lucky enough to win a few 1953/54 Parkhurst Red Wings. During 2005, I hope to build on this and put some work into adding more vintage Wings cards to my collection. All that remains now is to set my targets for 2005. These will appear on my next wantlist update some time in the next few days. The targets will be fairly modest, since I don’t envisage a trip to the States this year, and the expenses involved in buying individual cards – which usually includes pretty exorbitant postal costs – can be hefty. In addition to all these “incoming” targets, I’m also going to set myself some outgoings targets. I’m not going to be quite as ambitious as Chuck Paris, but I aim to dispatch (at least) 10 postings per month throughout the Finally, my nomination for “Card Of The Year”. It’s got to be Rick Ellison’s Score Card from the Vegas ’04 golf tournament. Surely a card that will go down in OBC legend. Here’s to a great year of collecting in 2005!! I hadn't been to this particular show in a year or two. It reminded me of a smaller version of the first shows I found in the early 1980s i.e. guys who were collectors first and dealers second. There were only 30 tables. Eight tables had OBC material. It took awhile to get around in that I wound up talking to dealers and other collectors. In fact they started to close up shop around 1:30 and I didn't have a chance to look at everything. But instead of breezing around trying to hit 200 tables plus at a bigshow I was able to take a little more time. With the $1 admission you alsohad dealers selling decent early 70s cards for 7 cents each, late 50s cards for $1, 52 Topps for $3, and photos of Ruth and others for $2.50. There was one guy with big price tags and not many visitors. I needed to share my good fortune with someone (in addition to my wife who restrained her amazement), so I'm picking on my fellow OBCers. I found: The 2 #58 1967 Schall bat variations - if someone needs them, let me know in that I already had them. Actually I can't imagine anyone really "needing"them. A third series 1952 Topps grayback for $3. The normal back is white. The gray is very hard to find. I noticed that the front of the card looked washedout and thought the back might be gray. It was! I am now up to 7 gray backs out of 60 after about 10 years of casual looking. The 1962 Topps 6th series checklist with large letters and yellow shadows. (Which I just learned of courtesy of OBCer Grant Rainsley) Most of the 1974 Topps football checklists, which I didn't previously realize I "needed." Some 1960s footballers, AND 6 photos of Babe Ruth that I didn't have including a Boston Brave, Ruthpitching as a Yankee, Ruth leaning on Feller's bat plus Gabby Hartnett with a smile on his face. You can see it doesn't take much to get (some) hobbyists excited and it is all about the "hunt." Good luck to all on your searches. ("Ramblings" is an apt title for this mail group, isn't it?) Dear Chrois and all other variation hunters This is certainly interesting. My first thought was that the near mint cardwas altered in some way. But the mint card looks about like mine except for a few more wrinkles on mine. The lesser condition card is the one that appears different, fuzzy. Since the two cards seem to have the exact same cropping of the image, my initial thought is that the effect on the eyes in the poorer version of the card is due to the yellow ink being out of register. You can see that the yellow around the name Maris bleeds onto the white. Also the Indian logo is red except for a sliver of yellow. Maris's eyes look brown instead of blue as in the better version. His eyelids look a littledifferent in the two images but I think it is because of the yellow being out of whack which also alters how his pupils appear. I wish I knew more about the printing process but my money is on that this card is a result of aslight mis-alignment in the printing process and is not a "variation" as arguably (It is fun being involved in the hobby while watching the Packers and Vikings at the same time.) ================= To: "Ramblings" Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 19:36:45 -0600 From: "George Vrechek" Subject: the 58 Maris Another (final) thought. Bob Reed points out that the black is out of whackon the fuzzy Maris card as well. A little investigation tells me that yellow and black are 2 of the colors used in a 4-color printing process. So it looks like Maris' "look" is the result of the yellow and black being out ofregister in the printing process. The black in the eyes move down just slightly. The team name at the bottom is lower as Bob Reed points out. If Maris' eyes move I would expect that about another 100 cards in the first series had similar roving eyes and other details. Bob Lemke did a story in SCD awhile ago that concluded that if you counted major printing inconsistenciesyou'd wind up with more variations than "regular" cards. Hence his conclusion that variations caused by the printing process don't count - unless of course someone convinces enough people that they should count - like the 1957 Gene Baker or the 1958 Pancho Herrera. The gray backs have "just" the team name left or centered. Another way of saying it would be that white and gray have name center or left. Only the whiteback ahave the date variation. 6 cards then have 5 different versions each. In addition to the 6 cards, card 188 of the White Soxs has no back variation but the front of the card has either: no line on the left border of the players' names, a faint line, or a strong line. Sorry to tell you about that one, but I don't think they are that hard to find. And you can rationalize them off your list as printing irregularities if you'd like. But what the heck, see if you can find 'em. There are also many cards in 1956 with miscellaneous stray, colored lines around the player or team names such as Ted Williams, Bessent, Ford, Kucks, probably Wynn and others. Don't forget the checklists and the unlisted gameinsert cards from 1956. Oh, and there are the cards cut from sheets with ads to the retailer on the back. The "dated 1955" variation does not. So, there are 5 total cards needed for each of those teams: 1) "1955"; 2) Team name left grey back; 3) Team name left white back; 4) Team name center grey back; and 5) Team name center white Isn't it comforting to know that, in order to get a master set of just these 6 cards, you'll need to acquire 30(!) cards? Lot included 99 cards in VG condition. I bid on the lot because for some reason I thought they were '56s which is a set I was looking to add to. Total brain lapse there. Anyway, since I have a pretty good chunk of 55 Topps done already, I only needed 6 from the lot. I'd love to be able to spread the lot through OBC but I just can't throw all that money into dupes right now. I relisted the 93 card lot on eBay and it's down to the last 24 hours. If anyone is interested in taking a look or possibly bidding on it, it is item number 5155467927. I had picked upa complete mint set of these back in 1975 for $9 if I recall. However, when finances were drained and grad school needed t be paid for, I sold the set. It was the only singles item I sold that I recall. Shortly after joining OBC, I decided to redo the set. I believe the kick off was the 2000 National in Cleveland at the OBC swap. I was given a Yount rookie at that time. Now granted this set is not in teh same condition as the one I had many years ago, but it is special. It was probably 85% OBC built. So thanks to all for the help. I now have a run of 1954-1992 Topps regular issues done except for some variations and lots of upgrades. The same day, I received my end of a swap. A new set to be added to my Topps list. 1971 Topps Tattoos. I was not even familliar with these and had to look them up in my Annual SCD. I got 5 of the 16. Great start, but would apprecaite any help folks may be able to give. So have no fear that my wantlists will shrink. Still more than 500 active vintage sets I am working on I think. I started the year needing 836 cards to finish 54 sets (the 75 Topps was not among these). I have already received 16 cards. I figure if I get 150 from the list this year it will be a decent year. I would think I might be able to finish about 10 sets this year. I've been in such a hurry to recover/redownload all the files/bookmarks/preferences I lost from the last two years that I haven't stopped to think that it took two years to get them the first time. I don't think I can do it all over again in two days. I still haven't taken the external hard drive out of the box yet except to see that there was one in there... I just today realized that maybe I should install the printer/scanner drivers on the new machine. When all else fails, read the directions. My main problem is that I think I'm pretty savvy with computers, when in reality I wouldn't be doing any of this in the first place if I wasn't such an idiot. On a semi-related note, have I mentioned that I fixed the light switch in my bathroom without electrocuting myself or blowing up the whole house? Details of this project involved me running up and down two flights of stairs from the fuse box to the bathroom many times and making sure the pilot light hadn't gone out in the furnace... don't ask unless you want the long version of this comedy. The updates for the OBC address book, OBC directory, "Who Collects What" lists, etc. are made by the webmaster (moi) and his minions (Dan Austin, Joe Isaac, Geordie Calvert, occasionally Steve Rittenberg, and probably someone else whom I am forgetting at the moment). These updates come at odd times and the accuracy is inversely proportional to the sobriety of the person making the change, ha ha. Meanwhile, I will probably be beaten senseless by a track star from Spackenkill who lives not very far from me at all, but Brian Dwyer's want list has been variously appearing and disappearing on a whim. We need better management of our data, both confidential (i.e. addresses, phone numbers, etc.) and public (i.e. email addresses, "Who Collects What" lists, etc.). For starters, in the next few minutes, I will shoot out an email to each of you listed as active members in OBC. I am trying to knock out one of the sets when I started OBC, the 80T set. Only need 2 more cards, the Rickey RC and # 761 A's Future Stars. Figured that I would pick them up on Evil Bay to knock it out but the # 761 is a common that a guy wants a $1 for the card and $6 p&h. Oddly enough, you can find that Rickey card for p&H of $1.35. Can someone email me or > the group a good process? Hi Dan, It'll depend on the kind of glue. The two I run into are: 1) Water-based paste: just soak it until the paper / glue disintegrates 2) Unholy-chemical-based: we chatted on Ramblings about this stuff before and the consensus was that some glue utterly bonds with the card and you can't do better then scraping as much as you can get with an Xacto knife. Toluene-based products like paint thinner might do the job, but it also might be a carcinogen, so lots of ventilation and a breathing mask are required. Since OBC is more "random acts of kindness" based than "trading" based, it's nice to know that the people you send cards to are still there and appreciate the thought. There's nothing more annoying than sending a great card to someone and never hearing a thank you or an acknowledgement that it ever got there. You can check out last year's results at: http://home.comcast.net/~seankatie/pool.htm but the gist is this. You enter by just telling me you are in. I split up the squares by Wednesday or Thursday to give you time to print a copy for your party. Then, the "losers" all try to send something to each of the "winners". If you can't, some other options are: 1- send something to one of last years winners (please note I was a winner last year) 2- send something to a fellow "loser" 3- help an old lady cross the street 4- etc. It is forbidden for anyone to try to keep track of anything, except me doing a raw count of hits, and the winners for the purpose of sending thanks. This is for fun, and not a contract in blood to send out cards. Everyone will do their best and cardboard will fly. So, email me if you want in! The mall shows here are generally lame. Thisone had 8 tables, 4 of them NASCAR. Of the other four, one had all new stuff, two had mixed and one had vintage. Of the mixed, one guy I had seen several times before, he has his cards in binders and charges high beckett foreverything. the other had no prices on his cards and I suspected the same but didn't stop their because ALL of his cards were Cardinals which would have limited any hits I could find. The vintage had a dealer I have seen andbought from many times in the past. I never really liked this guy much, I think he thinks a bit too highly of himself. He has the cards though and his prices aren't too bad. I had $60 to spend and I was looking for a 70 Ryanto finish the set, hoping to get one for under $50 and score a few other hits if I could. He had one in his high-price case I knew was out of my range but I asked him the price to start a dialog. $175. The card was at least EX and maybe NM. OK, "do you have something in a lesser grade?" He points to another case at one marked $170 but says this case is half off marked price. $85, getting closer but not there yet. I look through the case and sleeve at the card. I can't see any creases, the corners aren't too bad VG to EX, I don't know. ME: "That's a pretty good price for that card. I'm lookingfor something a bit lower though, maybe a Good to VG card? I've been tracking some on Ebay trying to...." DEALER: "Well, Sir, maybe you should buy all your cards on the internet. Why bother to come out here at all and wasteyour time why not stay at home and get everything on ebay?" ME, talking though his continuing rant: "Wait a minute! I'll buy anywhere I get the best price! I already told you I thought your price on that card was good. The conversation about that card is over now. I didn't ask you to drop your price. I've moved on and was just having a polite conversation with you while looked for other cards." I was looking at his other stuff at the time. DEALER: "What other cards do you need?" ME: " I need lots of other cards." Showing my PDA. I proceeded to spend 50 minutes looking thorough his cards and pulled several from his $3.00 box and one from his $2.00 box. Then I lookedthrough some of his star cards and finally settled on a 60 Hank Aaron thathe had $78 on but was in the half off case, so $39. I had put some cards back until I had $50 in my pile and thought I'd spend the last $10 on a Tipton T-205 if he had one in the pile in his case. ME: I'd like to look at onefinal thing if I could. Could I see that pile of T-205s?" DEALER: "What?" ME: "Your T-205s, you have some right?" I am a novice here and I thought maybe I misidentified the pile in his case. DEALER: "Yeah I got them. How much are you gonna spend?" ME: " I don't know, I just want to look at some lower grade ones" DEALER: "Well, I can't let you see them if your just gonna get some $10.00 card or something. I save those for the guys that buy from me regularly." ME: "What?! Are you trying to tell me you won't sell them tome?!" DEALER: "That's right. I save them for those guys. They buy a lot from me so I sell them those $10.00 cards" Now I stew for a minute or so while he answers a question for another customer. When they finish, I place thepile of cards on his case and say, "I've changed my mind. I don't think I want these anymore." DEALER: "Good! go buy your cards on the internet! You outta stay home!" ME: "Listen, You've been busting my balls since I got here. I don't know what your problem is. I've bought from you every time you come to Evansville." DEALER: "You leave. I don't need your $7.00." He lookeddown and saw the Aaron card. "I don't need your $40. I can get by without it." ME: "You're gonna have to" Thank God for OBC and the good dealers we seem to find. A guy like that could chase a guy from the hobby. I'll never forget driving him the Vet to watch my one and only Phillies game after spending the day at Howard's house. I also met Kevin Lohse that day - it reminds me how valuable life really is. We also lost a C-130 over here yesterday with at least nine crew members, so you can imagine it's a day for reflection. Give your kids a hug, tell your parents you love them, spend a day with friends - don't lose sight of what's important... BTW, the AC is voting on sending flowers, which I'm sure will be approved -I'll keep you posted. Hi gang, I pulled out my 1965 binder today. It's been a while since I've looked through it. I wanted to check out a particular card that Doc J gave me way back when I was an OBC newbie. As fate would have it, I opened the binder somewhere in the middle - right on the page where Gus Triandos was positioned in the center panel of the sheet. Flipping through the pages, I saw the Yankees team card - the last one I got to finish the set. Further back, the Tony Perez RC that eeeeee sent me (and I upgraded, so Joe Greco got the original one when I first met up with him and Eric). Flipping back a few pages, I see Lou Brock - one of the first high numbers I ever got for the set - long before I even started it. I still haven't found the card I'm looking for and I can't remember the number, so I flip back towards the front of the binder a little more. There's The Mick - I recall how hard it was to find a nice one at an affordable price (I was still collecting EX+ sets at the time, since this was before I really knew what I was doing.) I recall the e-mail John Ball sent me asking basically, "how excellent is excellent"? I remember about a week later, a single card pleasure arriving at my mailbox. I flip back a few pages near the back of the binder and I finally find it in the lower corner. I remember opening up the envelope and seeing the card wrapped in paper all over again. This was when I needed only about a dozen or so more for the set, so hitting my list was difficult (not that that's a big shock). I peel back the paper and see the black border of a 1965 card and nearly falling off the chair I was in - could it be? YES IT IS! A Steve Carlton Rookie card! And excellent condition would be an understatement... this is one of the nicer cards I have in the whole binder. My memory fast forwards to a couple years later... I'm searching on eBay and run across a 1956 Topps pin of Gus. I end up winning the lot for a couple bucks and carefully put the pin in a coin holder (I was collecting both the 64 and 71 coins at the time), then I shipped it off to the unsuspecting Dr. Ball. I fondly recall laughing with delight as absolute bedlam took over at the Gus Research and Relocation Center. The coin holder proved to be a wise safety precaution, since the curator had never seen the pin, let alone handled one. You could always tell the genuine excitement and appreciation from Doc's e-mails. I regret not having gotten a chance to meet with him personally, but I'm grateful to have met him through his e-mails and online chats. He will be sorely missed here. And as I fondly remember his signoff: A night of peace to you all... The guys in those pics were obviously younger fellers. Judy and I did attend a Lakeland Tigers game with John and Tom Curtis. When John's cancer seemed to have turned the corner for the better I helped talk him into returning to activity. When I didn't get a thank you after I sent him some cards last fall I should have suspected the cancer had returned. John and his Gus collection were a great part of early OBC. When Gus himself was told of John's collection of Triandos memorabilia he said "he must lead a very boring life." Not true, Gus. He was an interesting guy with a great sense of humor. For those relatively new to the group, this is mostly for you. We have losta true brother. I never met John in person, but I too had a special fondness for him despite the short amount of cardboard and a few personal emails that we shared. He was so happy to find that I was another Phillie Phan among the horde ! Like it has been described by better authors in earlier ramblings this evening... John had a true excitement, adoration and vigor for all things goodabout When you sent Doc a card, he was quick to reply with THANKS and his style of gratitude was uniquely wonderful. You simply could envision his smile andhis joy when he typed out THANKS in his emails. It was the truest gratitude imaginable. I have saved many, many emails since I joined OBC 7 years agoand his are among my favorites. He is so cool !! We will miss him greatly. I know that I'm a better man just for interactingwith him a few times through this awesome group. I thank you all for the opportunity. In the middle was the creation of the first OBCAC and all the stuff as to why it started). My memories of Doc J started over on Prodigy many moons ago. We would chat and trade on the message boards there. Just in dealing with him, I KNEW he was OBC material, and invited him to join the group. First of all, he was a man of class and dignity... he never had a negative thing to say about anyone or anything, even when OBC had its trials and tribulations. Second, he was a good looking guy ... We both looked similar except (as MANY OBCers would always remind me) I was much shorter! 3rd, he had a great wit and you always knew when you read about a card he got, that he was genuinely excited about it. Not to mention when he got a Gus Triandos card! He was also very excited about the Conlons. I'd like to think that our little corner of the world helped make his days a little brighter (although, he was the one usually sending out the sunshine). Every year for the longest time, right around father's day, Doc would remind me how Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game against the Mets. It was a running joke and I would always look forward to his father's day email. I guess this one hits a little harder because I was his mentor before we had mentors. I never did get to meet Doc in person, but as with all of you guys, he was a personal friend of mine. I feel bad that I really didn't know about his condition, as a massive "healing power of cardboard" I know would have lifted his spirits as much as he must have lifted all those people around him. Phyllis, I can't express how much I feel for your loss. We too, have lost not only a valued member of this group, but a tremendous friend. In this email, I've attached some of the emails in word form so us oldtimers can remember what kind of man he was and the rookies can get a sense of the giving and fun loving nature that was John Ball. Down below are some of the emails from those father's days. I always think about John on that day and will do so for the rest of my life. But now, we close the door on the Gus Triandos Research Center, as there will never be another curator who could handle such an important task. Good night Doc...
