I posted this note to the servers and no more than 10 minutes later the lights went out. Since I was in the process of cooking dinner, those plans suddenly changed. Ellen said we should run out and eat, and being the silly fool I am, I figured it wouldn't hurt to drive through a passing hurricane to grab some We stopped at a BarBQ place a couple of miles from the house. The lights weree on, and there was a small fleet of bucket trucks from JEA (our power company) parked around it. Figuring that was a good sign,we went in and waited to be seated. I was still wearing my work uniform, so I talked shop with a couple of the power workers, who said they didn't expect to get home until tomorrow and were taking a dinner break before going back out and getting the power restored. Whne I mentioned that my house power had recently gone out, they knew. Turns out my house isn't far from their dispatch center and getting the power up and running again was a high priority. Nice. We sat at our table, ordered, got our drinks and heard a loud BOOM! 200 yards from us, a power transformer blew up, and the lights went out. Though nobody asked them to help, I understand exactly what the JEA guys were thinking...I've been more than happy to help people during my lunch breaks even though I was technically off the clock. The electricians all got up and left, and within 10 minutes the power came back on. They returned to a rousing ovation when they I went up to the manager and offered to help pay their tab, but he told me that after what they did, they wouldn't be paying for their dinner. I thought that was great. Though the hurricane's main path missed us, we still got a lot of heavy wind and buckets of rain. Trees and power lines are down all over the city. The police are out in full force, all the firemen and paramedics are on duty and the electric workers are busting their humps to fix the power outages. I can also see that service technicians like myself will have our hands full when we're given the "all clear" to work on poles. It's going to be another long week. Let's see if I have become a consummate eBay'er and can identify some of the "Red Flags" that I see: 1) Sellers feedback is "private" or hidden so we can not see if others have been burned. 2) A "Private Auction" so that you can not see who is bidding - perfect for some shill bidding. Also does not allow you to warn others of potential fraudulent auction items. 3) Seller offers no refunds, something is wrong with that. 4) Seller states "No Guarantees" - probably a sure guarantee that the item is a fraud. 5) Seller won't accept checks, only money order or PayPal. You might be able to get PayPal to reverse a charge if you get taken my this guy but a money order is as good as cash. Once he has yours he will be laughing all the way to the bank. 6) Does that card look too good to be true? Well remember, if it looks to good to true - it probably is too good to be true. 7) Did you see that he also has a `52 Mantle and a `63 Rose card up for grabs? Funny they look "too good to be true" as well. 8) Exorbitant Shipping Charges - this is to enhance the "PT Barnum" effect of these items. 9) Past "sale" items include a T206 Cobb, Magie (error), Mathewson and Speaker. All the same story. I'm sure if I try hard enough I could find more "Flags", but let's see if someone else can add to the score. This is not a sure bet of course, but my money would be say hat all of these items being fakes. What say my learned colleagues? BE WELL!!! I take a lot of ribbing for possibly having more sets listed than anyone else in OBC. I believe there are over 380 vintage sets that I am "working" on. This does not include UV, type card sets, sets that I only need variations, sets that I onl need upgrades or my fav Coke caps. Some guys try to limit the number of sets on there lists. I think Ray Luurs tries to not have more than 10 sets listed at any one time. At the National I finished 3 sets, plus picked up a complete set. With today's package, I have finished 4 sets since the National. An eclectic group. 2 from the 50s, 2 from the 60s, 2 from the 70s (if you count the complete set picked up) and 2 UV 90s sets. 1950s: 1951 Topps Red backs (by Peter Mead at the hotel during the National)and 1953 Bowman B & W from Joel Freedman due to my post National whining. (I apologize if it was not Joel as I am still feeling groggy from the anastetic). 1960s: 1969 Nabisco Team Flakes at the National (Aaron & Oliva) and 1961 Topps Magic Rub-offs at the Gibraltar card show last Friday. 1970s: Bought some high end hockey froma dealer at the National and he "threw in" a complete set of 1979 Topps BB Comics (dupes near set still listed on my OBC list). 1978 Burger King Tigers finished at a local card shop after seeing Mark Talbot at a show a couple fo weeks 1990s: Greg Conway finished my 1994 Dennys at the National swap session. 1991 Classic Best Minor League BB finished by Steve today. I think this might help prove the fact, that the more you have listd on your lists, the more likely you are to get hits. I understand the liimited budget arguments and lack of focus arguments. Also the lack of time argument. I just disagree. I am in no rush to finish anything. The last couple of years, I have set some annual goals (inspired by others in the group in that regard). I did specifically look for a few things at the National (anyone have a lead on a 1960 Leaf BB #125 Sparky Anderson or 1975 Topps BB #1 Aaron to finish those sets?) with limited success. Having so many other sets on my lists, I was still able to get a ton of stuff (hits to over 120 vintage sets!). The number of sets hit also dispels the, "he cannot possibly be actually working on all those sets, can he?" question. Some sets, rarely see action (until the past week or so, the 1991 Classic Best set, had not been hit since being put on the list, and now it is finished). You also never know who might have what to swap. I am periodically contacted by folks outside OBC that find me by a google search I think for odd sets. This week, I was contacted about Armour Coins (Dave Kolenda and I may be the only ones truly working on these) and 1961 Fleer World Series penannt stickers(anyone else doing this set?). Of course there are the periodic contaacts about my fav Coke caps. All this is to say, do not worry about having too much on your list (see Dan Austin and Mark Talbot for other exampples of ridiculous lists). You can signal which sets are higher priority and focus on those, but allow others to help yo move along on other sets in the meantime. That way, when you finish a set you are focusing on, you have another one ready to now focus on. Enjoy and believe that with OBC help, you may just finish a lot more sets than you ever dreamed Mike Rich ================= Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 11:39:19 -0400 To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Squirrel Subject: GMAIL INVITE I have a couple gmail invites if anyone is interested www.gmail.com God Bless us all on this terrible day in U.S. history! --Scott 'Squirrel' Earle ================= Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 14:42:34 EDT To: OCTraders@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, From: biggies@aol.com Subject: anyone need a '71 Willie Lanier? I know this has been addressed before, but quite frankly, it is embarrasing to read about these thanks. I know there are guys that are in more than 1 group (I am one of them) and they simply issue the same message between the several groups without giving thought and courtesy to who is in the respective group. Perhaps the AC needs to consider this issue. I don't have an easy solution to this and do not want to start a squabble about this, but just wanted to voice my opinion. A guy I know is going through bankruptcy and is selling some of his collection. I went through his cards today and picked up a bunch for myself (including a 1962 McCovey, to bring my wantlist for that set down to 1--the Mantle card!). He was going to try to sell his cards to the local card shops, but I suggested that I try to offer some lots to OBC. He would rather see them go to another collector than to a dealer. Let me know if you may be interested in any of these lots: 1) Water-damaged 1964, 1965, and 1967 Topps. There are probably at least 200 from each year. The cards were likely in VG+ condition before being soaked by a burst pipe. I checked the 1967s and did not find any high numbers. I did not check the other years, since I have completed those sets, but he said that there may be some high numbers from 1964. He thought that $30 for the lot (a nickel apiece) would be fair. I said that that may be high, given that most of the cards are warped. 2) 1962 Exhibit cards. He has about 20, including Mantle, Clemente, Mays, Aaron, Koufax, Spahn, and Aaron. The condition looks quite good. He would like $150 for the lot (the Mantle card had been priced at $70 when he got it a few years ago). I told him that this may be somewhat high. I don't collect Exhibit cards so I don't know their current value. 3) pre-1963 Topps commons. He has about 150 1962 Topps commons in about VG condition (lots of chipped corners and edges, but few creases. There are a bunch of high numbers). He has about 50 1961 low-number commons in great condition. He also has from 50 to 75 commons total from 1957-1960. The 1958s-1960s are rough, but the 1957s look pretty good. 4) 1969-1970 Topps commons. He has hundreds of commons (maybe 6-7 inches) from each year). Their condition is very nice--some soft edges and corners, but few, if any, creases. Let me know if you may be interested in any of these. If you need more information or if you would like to make an offer, just let me know. I told him that I would get back to him within a week, at which time he is going to take the cards to the local dealers. Since he has money problems, he may accept a lowball offer. However, since he is a good guy, I do not want to rip him off. I figured this was another of those people who contacts you out of the blue, then wants to sell cards; I'll either ignore those or turn them down. So, I wrote back, telling her I needed them (we're talking about a grand total of 3 1957 commons here) & asking her what she wanted for them - expecting the sales pitch. Imagine my surprise when she wrote back & replied "nothing - just send me your address". They were cards her brothers had sold to her, & she was cleaning house, somehow found my website, & offered the cards to me. Well, they arrived yesterday, & they are in fine shape; not perfect, but in VG condition at worst. I told her that I only needed 2 of the 3, but offered to pass along the dupe to one of you here in OBC, & she thought that was a fine idea. So, to Wendy from Lancaster Ohio, I say "thanks" in this forum, & someone out there will receive a RAOK - from my mailing address, but really from Wendy . Had a fantastic but busy summer, I worked in the sports department of the New Haven Register for four weeks and then on an equity trading desk for six. Both were interesting experiences. Also visited a friend from LA for five days and saw all the sights including catching a Dodger game! I don't know the random guys smiling in the background of the picture. My Dad had some business in baltimore so took a day trip down with him and played a round of golf. In terms of cards I have still been buying a lot and had been trying hard to organize my collection before coming back to school... did a good job, except my wantlist on the site is not completely set Got back to school a few weeks ago starting my sophomore year at UPenn. I didn't bring any of my cards back with me yet (living in a frat house) but will be deciding which ones I want to bring back with me at some point. Also I plan on going to the Ft Wash show tomorrow (Sunday) so if you are going to be there shoot me an email or just look for me (use the pictures as a guide...I don't have an OBC hat so dont look for that). Was going to go to the show today, but I spent last night in the emergency room. A bottle semi-shattered in my hand. Will heal fine, but needed a few stitches in my hand. Was probably the most painful experience of my life... the cut was too deep for the anestisia to numb the stitches. Don't think anyone wants me to go into more detail about that though. Also need to jump my car... left my trunk slightly open by accident and my battery is out of commission. But other than that I am doing great, having fun, and can't wait to start sending some more cards out once I get them here with me. I am including some pictures (not of the injury..) for your enjoyment. Hope everyone is doing well! These cards are most nostalgic for me, I remember collecting them as a 9-yrold in the autumn of 1971 back in Vermont. I remember that they cost a dime and that I once made a dollar for raking a football field worth of leavesand I was so excited to get 10 packs at once, chewed all the gum at once, got lots of my beloved Dolphins cards and was in 9yr old Nirvana. I often can't remember what I did yesterday, but these cards bring back some fun times with the old neighborhood gang, we were all collecting them. I began collecting baseball that spring and I have never really stopped being nuts about sports and cardboard. I got the idea for 14 sets like this...my first two sets are in a binder, one after the other. The next three sets feature the top row , 3 slots of a 9-pocket sheet for one player, the next row for the next player etc... it looks cool to have 3-3-3 on one binder sheet. But what is even cooler is an entire 9-pocket sheet devoted to one card. A sheet with 9 Jim Kiick cards,or one filled with Norm Snead just looks great !!! I had to buy a 5 inch binder to hold the 263 sheets. I figure I've got a set going for all the neighborhood boys around Lincoln Avenue, Rutland VT in 1971...I haven't seen those fellows in a lot of yearsthough...so I'm keeping them !! eBay keeps me supplied with these cards cheaply, they are certainly not rare or expensive, maybe not even valuable. Generous OBCers send what they have and I'm very happy. I now have just 3 complete sets, but am really close to having 6 done...some cards I have 20 of ! Thanks for reading! Bogs down your usable memory. Go to your system accessories and do a "disk cleanup" that will ask you if you want to trash all unnecessary files to free up space. If you haven't defragged your computer in a long time, might be useful to do that also. This is also a function under Accessories _ System Tools. Also go to "search files" and enter *.tmp to list all the "temporary" files that have been generated (usually) by other sites and get rid of them. Sims also represented that a 1959 Kaline was fair, yet it had writing on both the front and back of the card. I have yet to see any official grading system consider a card with writing on it to be anything other than poor. Despite my raising the issue with Sims, he has refused to address the matter at all. The issue is not merely that it may be safe to buy on ebay where you can view the card. The issue is that after misrepresenting the condition of merchandise that he sold, he has failed to provide a satisfactory resolution. ================= Date: Sat, 25 Sep 2004 13:09:02 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: directorth@aol.com Subject: Re: Sims and Dave's Vintage After reading what was said about Sims, I felt the need to chime in about another site, Dave's Vintage. I haven't purchased from Sims, but I recently made my first purchase from Dave's Vintage, & I had a similar experience. One prime example was a 1962 Chico Cardenas card, which was described as VG-EX, but the card I received wasn't anywhere near VG-EX; the front showed considerable wear. There were a few others in what I felt were less-than-described condition, too. I didn't raise the issue , b/c these were commons & fairly cheap, but all-in-all, be very careful, especially if no picture is available. ================= Date: Sat, 25 Sep 2004 18:24:37 EDT To: OCTraders@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, From: biggies@aol.com Subject: 60's Topps available Available for immediate trade: 1963 Fleer:16 Bob Bannon www.biggcards.com ================= To: Date: Sat, 25 Sep 2004 16:51:41 -0700 From: "Grant Rainsley" Subject: New Evilbay ID to watch for.... First time for Peter to meet Ron & Earl. Great time catching up, swapping cardboard, watching a game and dessert. My neighbor may not be a collector, but he is a sportsfan. Last Friday he went to a Shock WNBA playoff game, Saturday Michigan Football, Sunday a Lions loss and tonite, the Tigers. 5 days, 4 games, 3 sports. Tomorrow, Peter, Mark, Earl & I hope to take in a small local card show, highlited by Mark's fav dealer, Harold. Ron Perry is wimping out on the 2 hour drive (each way) 2 days in a row. Although he plans on making it down for another local show on Sunday, October 10. Thanks will be given for the cardboard on the appropriate servers, but sets were finished by at least me & Peter. I may take in a vintage BB game this Saturday (in Rochester)and/or another Tigers game. Tonite was my 8th (I think) Tigers game this year. I wanted to warn you all about a big problem on ebay. There's a counterfeiter selling PSA vintage cards on ebay. I got took for a PSA 2 '52 Mantle. ($1825.00!!) It's a long story, but I've been in contact with several other guys that have also been taken. I was contacted by an ebayer that had the same PSA numbered '52 Mantle as I got. The crook's name may be Robert Stewart, out of San Diego. Another guy from Missouri got taken for $5000. on a '51 Bowman Mantle, '52 Topps Mantle, '33 Goudey Ruth, etc... Red Flags: lower feedback around 15- 20, built on low ticket items. Doesn't take PayPal... MO or cashier's check only. Auctions get won by someone with very low feedback( 0-5) then bidders get the 'second chance' at a greatly reduced price. The PSA holders are tampered with, not always obvious. The cards are easily seen to be fake under magnifying glass- print pattern especially on solid colors clearly fine dot pattern. He obviously has the authentic cards, because the PSA numbers check out on the PSA website. Ebay seems unable to respond to this problem. The guy drops out of sight and resurfaces under a different ID. There's a suspicious PSA 1 and PSA 4 Mantle on ebay right now. I suspect that some are being offered innocently by others that have been swindled. I didn't find out mine was fake until I had put it back up on ebay and someone informed me about the scam. (My card eventually 'sold' on ebay for over $4000.00 !!) I wish it was real- I'd have made some decent $$ on it. I pretty much figure that I'm out 1800.00...if anyone has an idea of what to do. Anaheim? Well Guys and Gals: Whadda baseball season!?! NL Wild Card race gone crazy =96 BoSox and Yanks alternately pounding each other. But the strangest of all has been the AL Have been watching Ichiro faithfully since he is the main bright spot on a team that is having a =91rebuilding year=92, with a lot of younger talent getting tons of playing time. (Ichiro reminds me of Rod Carew and all the games I attended when he was the ONLY bright spot for the Twins for what seemed like a decade). A few weeks ago I bought an M=92s ticket for my only game of the year =96 it=92s the last game of the season against the Rangers. have two reasons to see the last game =96 I want to see Ichiro officially break Sisler=92s record, and also to say good-bye to Edgar Martinez. Edgar=92s career with the Mariners started the same year I moved to Whidbey Island - - 1987. And I took up with a new team =96 the Mariners instead of the Twins. Happily, the Mariners moved into a fantastic outdoor stadium =96 sadly, Jay Buhner has retired and sweet Lou moved to Tampa Bay. Radio announcers think the M=92s manager Bob Melvin is gone due to the team=92s record. But in the same breath they say it isn=92t Melvin=92s fault as his hands were tied based what M=92s management did with money, roster, player moves, etc. So why should he be fired because of their mistakes? Cut loose a few executives, I I have watched the past three games the Mariners=92 have played against the Athletics. We have a long hate-hate relationship with the A=92s, especially under Art Howe=92s leadership. (Now he=92s going to get the sack from the Mets..) Yet they have always made end-of-season and post-season games very exciting. My question to A=92s fans and others is: why in the H are there only 17,000 fans at games from a first place team in the last week of the pennant race?! Watching the games on TV, I am shocked at the number of empty seats in the stadium. I know the Giants are across the Bay, but come on =96 Rangers, Athletics and Angels have been within shouting distance of each other all season. Do the A=92s fans assume the team can=92t make it to playoffs? If they are taking a wait and see attitude, NOW is the time to support their team and get on the bandwagon =96 at least for the LAST WEEK of the season! Rangers?! Well, they sure have had their chances. They seem to be lying flat on the mat, only to raise up on one elbow and win a game or two to keep them close. By this weekend, their fate will be decided. Angels seem to have a ton of momentum, playing on guts and grit. Plus they have who I believe is the second best manager in the AL, Mike Sciosia (Joe Torre is the smartest manager in AL, I believe=85). Hey, we could take a poll =96 who doyou guys/gals think are the two best managers in the AL? I don=92t know the NL well enough to do any rankings of their managers. Anyway, I will be seated 8 rows from the playing field in the section nearest the right field foul pole, for those watching the game. I=92m bringing my camera and hope to get some decent pics of Ichiro. Here's what I did: File a report with the FBI's internet fraud division and also try to contact his local district attorney. Encourage theothers who have been cheated to do the same. The post office fraud dept. can also help, especially if he's using a PO Box for fraud (or even if he's getting your money through the USPS I guess). It might even be worth a shot talking to the local PD or sheriff - anyone that'll listen. Ebay should prove to be as helpful as dry glue, so don't bother. About a week after I notified the FBI, I was contacted by an agent and sent forms to fill out as well as a number to call tape record my complaint and details. Then almost magically, I got another message on my machine a couple days later from the guy (who wasn't answering e-mails previously) asking me to call him back and verify my address, so hecould refund every penny of my money. Later, I got a call back from the Postal Consumer Protection Dept., where I reported that the matter had been resolved had my money back by then) and that I would no longer be pressing charges... although you can make your own judgement should the same situation arise. (I just happy that I got my money back, although I could've been a real @#@#% about it and stuck it to him... I left that course of action up to the other 30-40 people he ripped off I'm sure there was a handful that wanted himto just from the e-mails that were exchanged beforehand.) If you still can, print out a copy of the auction you won or anything you can use as evidence to back up your case. (Photocopies/carbons of the money order, etc...) I think together with the others who have been ripped off, you can get your money back or at least put the scumbag behind bars for a while.
