I left on Saturday the 17th, getting a late start as usual. Traffic was light so we made good time to Idaho, stopped for gas and proceeded to Montana. Planned to stayyong in Helena at first but it is not on I-90 so changed plan to Bozeman. Problem, There was a softball tourney there and no rooms for 100 miles, next town was Billings. Stopped at a rest area and slept a few hours. Sunday we drove the rest of Montana and most of South Dakota. Found a nice place and crashed. Monday we drove into Illnios and stopped in Peru (insert your jokes now). So Tuesday we got to Cleveland and found the Motel no problems. The motel was the problem, room was dirty (8pm) and A/C did not work. Only 80-90 all day, too hot for this kid. We tried to call Ken but he was on the poker run and the phone system was pretty poor. Decided to watch SportCenter and sleep. Sportcenter was the only show we could always get and we saw it several times a day. Wednesday, We hooked up with Sal and went downtown to the Rock and Roll HOF. Not bad but no parking, high priced with higher food and gifts and poorly organized. We all had our fill of that and went to find who ever was in town. Most were at The IX doing set-up for which ever dealers they hooked up with for the show. It cost $7 to park as there is no real way to just drop someone off or pickup. Sal got some tickets and we heard from a couple people about meeting for dinner. We waited at Kent's Hotel for most to show up and crossed the street to eat. The place closed at 10 and some people worked until 9 at the show but they were good about waiting and serving us when the last few came knocking on the window to get in. Thursday, Teresa and I went to Pro Football HOF in Canton. Farther than I thoght with some road work but it is well marked and we drove right in. Free parking, better prices and cheaper food. I liked the way it was laid out but I did not get to all the rooms. The main bust room was packed and we did not easily find all the players but there is only one Seahawk so it did not take long. We got back to the motel and started working on dinner plans. More people were showing up and we had about 15 at Applebee's once we all found it. I was close to being lost but since the person giving the directions also got lost, I am blaming that one on him. Friday we go to the show, slowly try to look at tables and find a few cheap beatup cards, but don't even make the half way mark. I am sitting at the food court tables as much as walking as it is hot and tiring. Meet a few more people and get ready to go to the game. We decide to leave a few cars at the motel to share the ride. I am waiting for Tim and Joe Issac to come so I can follow Joe to Jacobs. They come, get in Joe's car and take off never seeing me. I follow the best I can and we get to the first offramp together. This one is backed up, so Joe knows a better way. Back on the freeway, and on to the next offramp, and all the while he never saw me. WE finally get a few blocks from the field and Joe sees me, we walk to the game and hook up with the rest of the group. I am thinking 30 people there, 20 members? Good Game, Indians finally score a few runs (White Sox shut them out two prior games) and in extra innings win the game from the lowly Royals. Getting ready to go, I suggest anyone going back to the Motel ride with me so Joe can go home which was other direction from field. So Spike and Time were set but we crossed wires with Sal (insert jokes here) and he did not know we were planning to take him with us. He was more interested in supporting certain places of male enjoyment. This was also the cause of the shortage of dollar bills in the Cleveland area. Saturday, I hit the show solo, daughter decides to "chill" in the room. I hook up with the gang who were finishing the lunch break and getting ready to hit a few more tables. I have a few to return to and try to hit the other half of the show. This plan only lasts until Dave Trimble's table where I find many nice cards with a big price on them so I make that deal and am done for the year. I sit at the tables talkingto the members between runs and let them go find my wantlist. No came up with the last two embossed cards so at 15 minutes before the doors close for the day I locate them, buying a little more than they are worth, not knowing I could get them later at the swap for free. The Swap was great, best part of the show again. Room was a little small, and some people had alot of stuff with them. again 15 or so members showed up and they wiped out 7 pizzas and a few big bottles of soda real quick.I think everyone got some cards, I know I did. Just talking to your buddies at these times is also priceless. Sunday, We checkout and head west. We have a few things in mind to do but most of them fall through with other poeple don't showing up. We did drive by New Comisky and stopped to find Wrigley. That is an adventure, I think I will take the train if I ever go to a Cub game. Keep going west and north and land in Madison. Hang out there waiting to hook up and saw a movie. Spend another night as the place was cheap and clean. Tuesday we drive to Minnesota and stop at the Mall of America. Teresa goes to same shops we have here(They might have different stuff) and we grab food. More driving and make it through North Dakota in one piece. I make it to Great Falls Wednesday night and find Todd's house. We are treated like kings, and see the town. That took an hour and we zone out on the TV until dinner and the game. We take two trucks to the game, grab dinner and make just in time to sit down for the first inning. Nice seats, behind the plate on the concourse so I can walk down when I need to. Brandon did his announcing and the home team was no-hit for the first 4-5 innings, but they got to the pitcher and took the lead then the bullpen held on (hey M's, take notice, Bullpen holds lead!!) and the GF White Sox won the game. WE roll out to the packed lot and Todd and I BS'ed while Angie and the kids are stuck in the line. We get home to watch Sportcenter and hit the sack. Wake up late and hit the road home, make good time and make home Friday night, 2 weeks later and much broker, tired of the truck but ready to go again. For those of you still here, we logged over 5,000 miles driving. More food than I can remember and a lot of cards to be thanked in the next Big Al back in Seattle ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2004 09:24:23 -0700 From: enduroking@cableone.net Subject: Mail Delivery (failure obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com) ================= To: "ramblings" Date: Mon, 2 Aug 2004 21:33:40 -0400 From: "Sean McGowan" Subject: "cool topps cards" webpage updated For those of you who haven't seen it, and anyone interested in the newest topps cards, check out my selection for the "coolest" card from each topps set, '51-date at http://home.comcast.net/~seankatie/cooltopps/front.htm and, everyone check out this preston wilson card and look what they have done to the umpire... http://home.comcast.net/~seankatie/cooltopps/Cards/2004B.JPG geeze! (Side > note: there was also a > car named the 'tin lizzy') The "Tin Lizzy" was a nickname for the Model T Ford of the Roaring 20s. The Model A came off the line in 1927, but the nickname didn't stick to it. Speaking of nicknames, I've often been amused by the fact that I've been called "Stuff" by virtually every group I've associated myself with since the 5th grade. I moved to Upstate NY during the 5th grade...got the By the 9th grade, my teammates on the Junior Varsity baseball team even had a chant for me using that nickname...though it's a little bawdy (I'll share it with anybody who asks, but won't say it in this forum to protect anybody's sensitivities). In the 10th grade, I moved to East Tennessee and was called Stuff by the guys I played football with. I moved back to NY for the 11th grade and everybody still remembered that stupid chant... I joined the Army right out of high school and found that my sergeants leaned to call me Stuff rather quickly (to me, it was better than "Private Alphabet," which I heard a lot also)... After my discharge, I went to college. At the orientation, I wore my old Army PT shirt that said "PFC Stuff" and had the damn nickname again for 4 years! When my fratenity gave me the nickname "Ace" it didn't work...nobody I went to college with will ever remember me as Ace. In '98 I started working for the cable company (a job I still hold today) and was the fourth new hire named Chris in two and a half months. Since nobody wanted to keep their Chrises straight, guess what they started calling me? Dispatchers, supervisors I've never worked for and secretaries all call me "Stuff." My father tells me the same thing happened to him when he was in the service...so I guess it's not just me. But now that I think of it...I think I may have just gotten the ball rolling again... Take care, PS: I have a few thanks to hand out, but my computer is in the shop because of one of those virii that have been wreaking havoc lately. Swung by the office for a couple of hours to make sure things were OK & hit the road north. Three hours forty-five minutes later up I-71 and I'm at the X-I Center just south of Cleveland. $22 lighter & I'm inside looking for the white hats of the good guys. Didn't have to go far as a group of OBCers are eating lunch & resting at the food court just inside the doors. Must have been a hard morning on the crew. Met many new friends & said hello to a number of old faces. Got the scoop on where some of the better deals could be found and was off hunting for bargains with $ burning a hole in my pocket. Jim Hatch came along to show me where Kurt Turdot's table was. Found several tables with 53 & 54 Topps & Bowmans looking for a new home in my price range. Also loaded up on 52 Topps for $2 a piece. Spent most of the afternoon just roaming around & talking to folks. Walked by about half the tables. It's mind boggling to see all the people & all the dealers & all the cards. You're overwelmed, senses overloaded, Kid in the candy store syndrom. Met back with the OBC crew about 5:30 to work out the logistics for the Indians game. I hooked up with Doug Smith & Hatch to minimize the number of cars. Left my car in a office park on the way. Easy drive, found a parking lot right across the street from the Jake with only 2 spots left. Arrived at the gate in five minutes. Tenth year anniversary of the stadium, so the first umpteen people received a replica Jake. Nice momento but a pain in the ass to carry around with a large beer & mett on bun with everything & french fries. Found our seats, great location down the first base line several rows off the left field corner. Exchanged hellos with everyone. Went to get a beer & peanuts. Game gets underway, low scoring affair. Much BSing among the OBC gang, Picture taking etc. Went and got a footlong hotdog with Chili, cheese, onions, mustard etc. with a libation to wash it down. Did I mention I hadn't eaten all day? Some one forgot to tell me it gets rather cool in the evening next to Lake Erie. I was only wearing a tee shirt with shorts. I offered to buy Hatch's jacket. A hamburger & chips warmed me up though. Game finally ended in the 11th with a walk off homer. Was out of the ballpark & on the road in under fifteen minutes, as I said we had a great parking spot. I shared a room at the other Days Inn with Mike Rich. He left the game about a half inning too soon, so I called him to get on the road directions. Apparently I called him just as he got to the exit, which he proceeded to pass by as he was talking to me. I therefore beat him back to the Hotel. The accomodations consisted of a roof over our heads with two double beds. I would complain more, but after reading St Al's report, apparently our Days Inn was the better of the two. Slept soundly though. Next AM Mike Rich takes me to this little Greek family restaurant for breakfast, half priced if you eat before 9AM. We both had huge meals with tip, all for under 10 bucks. A true OBC land mark. The show was just as big the next day. Found many 49-52 Bowmans for a buck a piece. Hooked up with Ron Perry & hit some bargain bins. Everything in the box was like 50-75 cents. Ron asked, "What kind of deal will you give us if we buy 200 cards?" Ten cents a piece was the reply. We went crazy. Found lots of hits to many sets. Had a great time looking for cards & talking with friends. Spent a lot of time looking for a Ryan RC at a reasonable price. Sal found one for me late in the day for $80. By that time I was out of cash & the dealer wouldn't take a credit card. Oh well, there always Chicago next year. From the show we went to the Morganti Days Inn. The highlight of the weekend. Swap meeting & pizza Party. Showed up with my monster box of dupes. Left with many hits from many guys. It's definitely the best part of the National get together. Brought Ron Perry back to the hotel. Had a rollaway set up for him. Crashed, hope my snoring didn't keep Mike & Ron awake. Was up & on the road home by 7 AM. It's now past 1AM. My short recap has Morgantisized. Way past my bedtime. Goodnite all & god bless. ================= Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2004 19:18:57 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "jmoleta30341" Subject: Must read (especially if you like the Great American...Book) Hidden among some of the tripe that runs on sports pages these days (headlines on Roger Clemens' little league activities and Ricky Williams' true motivation for retiring come to mind) was this gem from ESPN writer David Vecsey. A few months ago (April to be exact), Bob D'Angelo sent out an offer to all of us. He had a copy of the bound galley of Leigh Montville's biography of Ted Williams. He wondered if anyone would like to read Not to miss an opportunity, and dutifully remembering that Williams was my patron saint when I grew up in Rhode Island in the '50s and '60s, I raised my hand first and Bob graciously sent me the book. Sorry Bob, but it took a me a long time to get through it. It's just not the kind of thing you can look at as a "quick read." Anyway, I did finish it a few minutes ago and want to thank Bob once again for providing me the most revealing piece of literature I have ever seen on my idol. Sure it was ponderous, and it certainly was the chronicle of a very complicated life - but therein lies the story of Ted Williams. Many have compared him to John Wayne over the years. I can see why they do; but, after reading the book, I see more that makes me think of Bobby Knight(who idolized Williams himself) and Don Now, if you are wondering what I mean by that, maybe you should put your hand up next to get a look at the book. I think that is what Bob would want me to do with it. If I am wrong about that, Bob, please let me know. ================= Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2004 22:58:03 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: directorth@aol.com Subject: My belated National report Hi all, I am finally catching up after a very busy week and a half & thought I should post a mini-ramble on my National experience, so here goes: Thursday night we packed up the car & headed north to Cleveland - two hours after we planned to ( I blame the wife; I was ready to go, she wasn't) & finally arrived at the In-Law Inn after midnight on Thursday. Up early on Friday & off to Erie PA for a college visit for my senior-to-be. That, of course, took up the whole day, leaving me just one day - Saturday - for the National. I hoped for more than that, but senior-to-be's weekends are completely booked until November, so we had to take advantage of an oppotunity for a college visit. Anyway, up early Saturday, grab the MapQuest directions & the dupes box (I had planned to be more selective & bring better dupes but ran out of time, so I had to just grab a few handfuls & go), & head off to find the IX Center. Now, I've been married for 17 years now, but in all that time, with many visits to the eastern Cleveland 'burbs I'd only been near the airport once, so I was hoping I could find the place OK. That I did, & after my jaw hit the floor when I saw it was 7 bucks to park (!), headed inside. Picked up my pre-purchased discount ticket, & immediately ran into Spike Glidden. We exchanged hellos as we picked up our tickets, then I headed to the back of the line. On the way in, I'm scanning for the white & blue hats - finally saw a group of three, one of whom waved in my direction. I waved back then felt silly - what if he's waving at somebody else? Possible embarrassment, but I didn't care, too excited to get inside & start scooping up cardboard. OK, inside, & suddenly overwhelmed - this is my first National & by far the largest card show I've ever been in. I came in armed with our list of OBC friendly dealers to check, but that plan didn't last long, as I began to go up & down the aisles, looking for 1) vintage at a good price and 2) fellow OBC'ers. (at this point I should mention that I'd only had the pleasure of meeting 2 OBC'ers up until now, so I'm really looking forward to meeting "new'" old friends). After a few passes up & down, I run into Sal Domino & Ken Morganti with his un-missable hat; eventually I run into Greg Conway & his son Wade, Doug Smith, Chris Stufflestreet, Mike Rich, Larry Gersbach, Ron Perry (wearing a vintage throwback maroon OBC hat), Steve Rittenberg & more. These fine gentlemen told me that it was going to be impossible to "do" the whole show in a day, & boy were they right; I made a point of going up & down all aisles but felt very rushed doing it, & in doing so I know I must have missed some great bargains. I picked up many hits to my 58 & 59 lists, & at the end of the day at Kurt Tourdot's table I killed off my 1961 variations. As the day wore down, I got in the habit of trying to see where the OBC hats - & thus the best deals - were. After the show, I pull out the ol' MapQuest directions & hop back on the road to find the Days Inn for the swap. I'm remembering someone (Morganti?) saying the hotel was only about 5 minutes away, so after getting back on the freeway & driving for 10 minutes, I realize - hey, I might be going the wrong direction! And I was. Turned around, & found the hotel. Up to the room - small - just enough for all of us & our cards. After my driving adventure, I find myself sitting at a table with Al Cummings (& remembering reading about his driving misadventures), & Greg & Wade Conway, but eventually we all sort of wandered around, checking through each oither's dupes. More greetings are offered, & I meet everyone else who came to the swap. I'm usually not comfortable around a lot of people I don't know, but that wasn't the case here; it felt like I'd known everyone for a long time & we were all old friends. Once the swap began, I really wished I had brought better dupes (too many 70's cards) because I don't think too many guys were able to grab much (I'll do better in Chicago next year). Many cards found their way to my box; for one example, near the end of the swap session, Spike twisted my arm & convinced me to grab a pile of 57's from his dupes box; St. Al kept tossing early 50's Mother's Cookies across the table at me; Spike (or was it Jim Hatch) scaled qute a few across the room to me too. Mike Rich had a huge box of early 80's Fleer stuff which he insisted I grab a set from; I intended to, Mike, I really did, but I forgot about it! Other highlights included the card that got flipped to Sal & landed on the bill of his cap; Wade Conway snapping pictures left & right; the pizza, pop, & forming of new friendships. It was great to be able to put faces with all of the names. Hopefully I was able to accurately record who gave me what when I posted my thanks. If I missed or goofed, I apologize; and for the guys who didn't grab anything from my box, see me in Chicago! Finally, I vow to spend more than one day at the show next time. Sounds like I missed out on some great bargains - either because they were gone early, or I overlooked them trying to see all dealers. Boy was I jealous when I heard (& read) about the great pick-ups! I think we need to carry OBC-only pagers to alert each other of a great table :-) My previously short-list of OBC'ers I've met - Al Crotte & George Vrecheck - now includes Greg Conway, Al Cummings, Sal Domino, Scott Earle, Larry Gersbach, Spike Glidden, Kent Goto, Jim Hatch, Joe Isaac, John Leroux, Bill Malson, John McLaughlin, Kent Morganti, Tim Newcomb, Ron Perry, Bob Reed, Mike Rich, Steve Rittenberg, Doug Smith, Chris Stufflestreet, & Mark Talbot. I met most of these fine gents at the show, & the rest at the swap. Thanks for an unforgettable experinece! I saw the email with the Fitak name in it a few weeks ago. THAT along with the ESPN feature on J.R. Richard (1 of Tim's all time fav) led me to give the Fitak's a call. I talked with Linda & Tim Fitak Thursday night for about 20 minutes. Actually "I" only talked for about 2 minutes! If you've talked with Tim you probably know what I mean :-) He's a friendly guy however. Anyway, Tim told me to tell ya'll that due to circumstances beyond their control, they do not have a computer. They hope to get one & be back on line AFTER Sept 5th however. He tells me Linda misses the group very much & wants to remain a member! Tim says he has spoken with & met several of you over the last 11 months & you are also familar with their situation. Linda makes only the 5th OBC member I've ever talked with on the phone: #1 Al "Shoeless" Autry (440 times!) #2 Larry "Guru" Tipton (twice in 92?) #3 Kent "Preacher" Pool (twice in 92?) #4 Uncle Phil Chiemleski (1992 & 2003?) #5 Linda "Jazz Girl" Fitak (8-5-04) Met in person #1 Alvin Autry (1970 originally) Anyone sitting on zero? Speaking of Al Autry, he said he emailed the group about a couple years ago to get back in. He was an original member back in 1991 just like me & we grew up together. He didn't mention either of these facts though & I had not been in contact with him for 2 years at the time (he moved near Baltimore). Anway, he was told there was/is a waiting list (or such) which left him a little ill about the situation. He said he just dropped it after that. He now lives in Houston, Texas & is an avid autograph collector getting many in person this year (SuperBowl/All Star). Greg Maddux was the main player he use to collect but he NOW says he has basically everything he wants (or has room for) plus no time for trading really. Speaking of old OBCers...anyone have a addy or phone for Bryan Yorkton (Hershiser collector) or NCGator Tim Lubinski? I may be off on the names. I'd also still like to find out where John Jackson is to get OBC card #18 of 20 from that 96 B&W set. What I have right now is a printed copy of a pic Ken Morganti was nice enough to email me. Thanks goes to Big Al (I "think" it was) who tells me the NYYs signed Olerud over Fred McGriff. The next day I heard it mentioned on ESPN & Olerud had like 4 RBIs :-( I haven't heard anything about Rickey Henderson in months :-( I had my pelvic CT scan Wednesday. That contrast drink doesn't taste too bad at all when cold. Good thing they are sugar free since I had to drink 3 bottles. That crap I had for a glucose tolerance test a few years back made me sick (I'm hypoglycemic) but I don't know how much sugar was in it now. Anyway test results should go to my doc in a few days. Hopefully it'll be something that can be controlled by diet or antibiotics as opposed to surgery! I've seen enough of docs & hospitals lately as a family friend I've known since 1973 spent a week in ICU before dying last week. Then just days before my GrandMas 89th birthday (8-4-1915), she went to check on my 70 yr old Aunt (her daughter) in the bathroom, who had gotten up early with chest pains. My GrandMa fell and broke her hip! The ambulance came & ended up taking them both! How weird is that? Then my cousin (the aunt's daughter) was on her way to school (a teacher) & got passed by the ambulance, Later down the road she saw it was at her GrandMas & Mom's place. Anyway, my GrandMa had surgery Sunday & all appears well. She is moving into a nursing home Friday. My GrandPa & Aunt died years ago, not too long after breaking a hip, so I know that it is usually a bad sign. But Grandma is in much better health than they were, even though she is about 20 years older too! Has anyone else ever even heard of or seen a blank back 1966 Topps card? I got one of about 12 to 14 that I saw on ebay (Chandy Greenholt) several months back. I think they are VERY rare. This year's National was no comparison to the 2003 National in atlantic City. Atlantic City stunk and Cleveland was an excellent time. The following are some thoughts, observations, happenings, etc. from my time in Cleveland. I was able to take a couple of days off work and arrived Thursday morning just before 11:00. I had bought a VIP pass through Naxcom. Although it was dicounted to $79, and there was no trouble obtaining it and it did get me in a 1/2 hour earlier, entitled me to some free autographs and a gift bag, I do not think it was worth it. I think in future years, I may just by daily tickets, if I cannot score a dealer badge. Ran into a few guys almost immediately, including Sal. He gets a thanks for putting together the list of all our names, hotels, cell #s, etc., which was useful during the weekend. Sal was with Ken. A few minutes later, I ended up at Bill Henderson's table and ran into the Stufflestreet gang. Chris was buying some cards, including some Bowman FB Steelers. Bill does does usually have anything besides BB. I asked to look at the Bowman FB and was able to find 2 1952 large I needed plus some oddball items, including the top part of what Peter later ID'd as a 1956 Journal American card (Jackie Robinson). Turns out 1 of the 52 Bowman FB was a shortprint that books for $650. I got the whole stack for $20. Show was off to a good start. Saw a dealer from Michigan I know, John Ramirez. I do not usually get much since I think his prices are a tad high. I was able to get some Red Mans from him. Ken had told me about a group lot of 52 semi-highs, and as I stumbled around trying to get to that side of the convention center, ended up getting some oddball and 63 Topps BB from a dealer who had a couple of boxes marked, "Tiptons" and "more Tiptons". How can you not buy from a dealer like that. These included a fair number of semi-high 63 Topps for $1 each. Also found some 1939 Playballs. Found the table with the 52 Topps, only to discover the lot was gone. Later found out Ken had gone back and bought it. Also got some 1976 Burger Chef trays and 1968 Topps Posters, including Yaz. Slurpee cups, 67 Topps FB comics, 65 Topps BB Transfers, a Hires card, astack of Red Man, Topps Stamps, 1962 Jell-o, a hockey All-Star game program and a bunch of my favorites, Coke FB caps rounded out the purchases on Thursday at the show. I did run into a few OBCers during my travels. We had decided to go back to OBC Central (aka The Days Inn Airport East) to go to dinner as a group. After picture taking, waiting for everyone to show up and deciding on dinner, we headed out to Applebee's. I had told Peter Mead I would try and pick him up at the airport. His flight was due in around 8:00 pm. Problem was, he had not given me the flight info. He had my cell phone. As we kept on driving away from the airport to find the Applebee's, I decided to turnaround so I would be able to go and get Peter. Stopped off and got gas, grabbed a snack at Arby's and headed to the airport with the hopes Peter would call. I then saw a sign for a card shop with an open sign. Turned around immediately and went in. Afterall, I had not looked at cards in over an hour. Typically, it was mainly UV junk. Only 1 prewar card in the shop, an offgrade Diamond Star (I now own). Owner tells me if I do not see what I am looking for to just ask, maybe he has it in back. Sarcastically, I mention 1930s matchbooks and my fav, Coke caps. He says he does not have any matchbooks, but may have some Coke caps in a box on the counter. Sure enough, he has a bunch in a box marked $.50 each. They are the type with the Lift tabs. Extremely tough to find and book about 3-4 times as much as regular Coke caps. Ended up with 67 with Lifttabs and 4 other Coke caps. May have been the 2nd best buy of the day. By this time it is about 8:40. I feel bad about Peter, but he had not called yet. Head towards the airport again. AS I approach the airport, Peter calls. I expect to say he is at the hotel. Contrarily, the flight was late. He just got in and was wondering if I might pick him up. I tell him to head toward baggage pick up and wait outside the Southwest entrance. I am cruising through the airport as I pull up, Peter walks out. I literally did not stop the car, just hit unlock and he jumps in. I doubt he was outside more than 4 seconds. We head off to dinner as we laugh over how incredible the timing was. Back at the hotel, he hands me a previously promised 51 Topps Red Back Duke Snider to finish the set (I still need the variations). This is the oldest BB set I have ever finished (I have a 1950 Bowman FB and a 1948 Bowman Baskteball set Friday morning Peter heard about a restaurant near the hotel for breakfast instead of the crusty donuts and a dispenser for OJ as a continentl breakfast at the hotel. We go to the restaurant and find out they give 50% off the food menu if ordered by 9:00 am. Breakfast for 2, for about $8 with tip! On to the show where they ripped me off for parking. They had closed a booth early on Thursady that allows you to buy a discounted parking pass. Would not honor it Friday morning. Ends up costing an extra $7 for the weekend. Some major purchases on Friday included Topps Stamps (made major progress on these sets), 1963 GAD Fun cards (am I the only 1 collecting this set?), an offgrade 62 Post BB shortprint, spent lots of money at Kurt Tourdot's table (made afew purchases from Kurt over the weekend), a lot of 37 1952 Wheaties cards including 3 Mikans and 6 Fellers (only 1 was autographed), a couple of Rizzutos etc. Bought a lot of Salada coinsa set of Strliner Stickers and some other goodies. Went to the Indians game with the group Friday nite. Tried to keep Bill Malson company until he could get his ticket. Thanks to Bob Reed for organizing this outing. I feel bad that he did not end up with 1 of teh replica stadiums they gave out at the game. I did not get one when I came in either. The temp dropped, I was tire, etc. and I left before the bottom of the 11th. Naturally, the Indians hit a walk off home run immediately. I was still at the stadium, but missed the hit. Missed my exit going back to the hotel and Gersh beat me to the hotel. We stayed up and looked at each others buys from the day. Saturday, we went back to the restaurant Peter and I had gone to Friday. Big buys included a couple of Topps Hockey cards (I only need 14 to finish the run), including a 1960 Bobby Hull, 1962 Topps BB Bucks, Armour Coins (including a 1960 Mantle), 1955 Topps Doubleheaders, Nu Card FB Stickers (I am sure I am the only 1 collecting these) and 1 of the last 3 1953 Bowman Color I need, Whitey Ford. Saturday nite was the OBC swap. Steve brings more to swap than many have in their entire collection. Al is in the corner giving away some great prewar, regional and oddball material. Got a chance to see guys I had not seen in a year and get a chance to talk to a few others. Mark Talbot showed up with Kendall and Rosie, who I think I have become an unofficial uncle to. I did not circulate the room as much as I would have liked, but was able to join Spike and Kent Goto in buying the 2 1952 Topps BB lots Ken Morganti had previously picked up. I needed about 27 low humbers before the show. Down to about 13 and this buy was a major impetus. It also included some red and black back variations I needed. Tim Newcomb gave me a small stack of prewar that took me a while to ID them all. I do not eat pizza so I did not eat at the swap. Pat, from Kevin Savage Cards (a sponsor of the swap), also did not eat at the swap, as the pizza was gone. Pat and I went out to Big Boy for a late dinner and chat about the hobby. A great guy and it is not surprising he works for an OBC approved dealer. Ron Perry joined Gersh and I at the hotel Saturday Sunday, after Gersh and Ron were done snoring, gersh headed home and Ron and I went back for another 1/2 off restaurant meal. 3 days in a row I had breakfast at the same restaurant with 3 different OBC roommates. Ken and I split a lot of Red Man I had found, knocking another 20+ from my Red Man list. Oddballs of the days include Post CFL, Eureka Stamps, Wide Pens, Armour Coins. A buy of more 1969 Topps stamps led into a large purchase, including an album with lots of 1960s Topps insert commons. Bought some more Wide Pens from Kurt Tourdot. Kurt told a few of us about another dealer with high value less than mint cards at discount prices. Turns out he is from my area and sets up at a weekly Wednesday show. I bought an unchecked 57 Topps BB 3/4 checklist and a 1950 Bowman BB Berra among other items. That was my last purchase of the show. Steve came out to the car and took about 150-200 1973 Topps FB for his attempt to rebuild that set and Ron and I headed back. Dropped Ron off at Squirrel's where he had left his car. What a weekend. I believe I got cards from 123 sets (this does not count sets I am looking to upgrade that saw hits or UV sets) that are on my lists. I will admit that 9 of the 123 sets are new to my list and are type cards or have caused me to add them. I only completed a few sets, including the 51 Topps Red backs, 1969 Nabisco Team Flakes and the 1994 Denny's (from Yaz at the swap). I also bought some "demand" cards at what I thought were bargain prices that I will shortly be offering as dealer scum for those that could not attend the show. Sorry about the length of this report, but the National should be attended if possible. 25+ OBcers, and tons of vintage material. All grades. Even with all my buys, other OBCers were striking gold themselves. Ron Perry, Ken, Steve, Peter Mead all got great buys. It took all 4 days for me to make it through the whole show. Had a chance to slow down Sunday afternoon and went to the autograph area. Had a nice chat with former Lions coach, Monte Clark. Also, got a bunch of autographs from Tito Francona. He had never seen a 1962 Topps BB Buck, which I got 3 autographed. I also had him sign 2 1962 Jell-o. Oddball items. Lists have now been upgraded and thanks will be posted for the swap on the thanks server. The poll is used to check the status of members - everytime we run it we get people who drop out because they aren't interested anymore (we had one this time), but it also a good way to do quality control on email addresses. The list will go to the AC and they will decide if anyone needs to be removed. Nobody would ever remove Mike I can assure you. I saw a Thanks for cards from John Storman right before this note, so he's obviously around - maybe his email changed - anyway, he's obviously still active. The membership poll is not meant to be draconian, it's more of a spot check on the membership to see that we are all still up and running... As far as Holland's application, you can go to the ROC and look at his application - there is a link to it on his app. At the time he was considered, he had a bunch of UV stuff including Nascar, etc and only about a total of 30 vintage cards (not sets, cards) on his list. Does this mean he shouldn't be in the group? Of course not, he may be a perfect fit. The guys on the AC thought we should defer his application until Mark had a chance to contact/trade with OBCers to find out if the group fits his needs. He has since added some more vintage sets to his list and is really interested in joining, so hopefully we will see him in the group next month. One thing we are trying to avoid is something like I saw yesterday where somebody sent a Thanks to a guy not in the group to the Thanks server along with two other trading groups servers - that is not the direction we want to go as you well know. Trips, let me know if you have any questions - hopfully I answered them for Take Care, Geno I have been away for a bit and only just saw this posting on my return today. I have deduced that I am the culprit here in thanking someone in 3 different groups all in one email. I am fairly sure it was me as I was also the one thanking John Storman for some recently received cards and you made mention of My apology. I was under the belief that the other gentleman I was thanking that day, Randy Wilberg, was a member of OBC as well as VCT and OCT. Clearly I was wrong. I am usually pretty careful to check. In this case I was just lazy I guess. Please know that I will be more diligent checking on members before emailing thanks in the future. I must say that I am a bit surprised that in a group that is happy to trade cards that are ripped in half and negligibly readable we would have a "direction" that admonished someone for thanking someone erroneously. But now I understand. I did something to my left hand while playing golf and haven't hit a golf ball since. It doesn't hurt when doing normal activities but I get a pretty good pain when I try and swing a club. So, I've resorted to other things to keep myself entertained. One of those things has been one of "round tuit" projects: putting some sets into albums. The way I collect sets is this: I put the cards in a xxx count box until it is complete. When I do complete a set, I'll treat it to some nice new pages and a binder. I have plenty of pages laying around and I solved the binder problem when my company's corporate headquarters (including me) moved in the spring - lots of departments getting rid of loose-leaf binders before they moved. I took all that I could find and put others in the company on notice to not throw away any binders. Made out pretty good, too! I wish I could network like that in the rest of my life :-) With boxes full of cards and supplies in hand on a summer afternoon, I'd sit on my back deck with a brew, turn on some tunes and start filling pages. Inside each box, not only did I have cards but also some notes from OBC'ers that accompanied the cards. I can remember each of those like it just arrived yesterday, even though many are a number of years old. Going through the sets, I can often remember how I acquired key cards and if not from OBC where I got it (show, swap, ebay, etc.). Then, examining the cards themselves are a real hoot too. While going through my 1969 set, I realized I had a white letter variation that I never knew I had. Looking through the 1973 set made me realize just how awful some of the pictures are. As I go along stuffing cards into pages (back to back) I'd find a real beater and ask myself "Gee...should I try and get one that's not poor minus?" Duh! Of course not! Why would I even think of doing such a thing?? I consider myself a connoisseur of crappy cards - upgrading would make my collection lose a LOT of character. In a way, it's almost a shame to put cards in pages - cards are meant to be dealt, felt and smelled. It's amazing how many different smells you can experience while going through a stack of cards. While being in boxes, the scents kind of morph into one "old cardboard" aroma, but some distinct smells can still be found: the basement scent, various degrees of must, smoke, and a couple of other unidentifiable stenches that I really don't want to investigate any But, of course, pages are the best way to enjoy viewing a set as a whole. Turning each page you can almost remember something about every player off the top of your head. Don Money was a Red Sox killer. That's not really Aurelio Rodriguez; it's a bat boy. Walt Williams really didn't have a neck! And on and on and on... There are a couple of sets I'm on the verge of completing and going through some of the completed ones has made me want to go and complete these. Then once again I can treat the newly completed sets to albums and pages... and treat myself to memories of the players, the cards and OBC. Happy Collecting! ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 09:19:32 -0700 From: chuckparis@comcast.net Subject: Re: Protected Mail System Now a new message is available. ================= Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 14:46:48 EDT To: ChicoD1@aol.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: ChicoD1@aol.com Subject: Cleveland thoughts.. Well boys, Time I chimed in on the goings on at the National. I won't go over all the great cards I got from everyone who attended. This is a blanket thanks for everyone who passed cardboard my way. The thing that always sticks in my mind about these gatherings is how we all KNOW each other, even if we have never met face to face. It's like that HS friend you see every once in a while and you just pick up like no time has The swap meet was great! I even caught a card on my hat! Just gives you an idea of how fast and furious cards are (literally) thrown around the room. My absolute favorite site is seeing the face of rookies when they pull a card from your pile and ask what you need for it. All I ever need is for you to fill a hole in your wantlist or have a great memory of the player pictured. Technology hit OBC on this trip, as cell phones were a MUST! "We are going to eat at the snack bar", "We're lost, what exit to the restaurant?", "How to I get to the hotel?", "Stop looking! I found your card, booth 632", "I'm on the second level of the parking garage, ok we'll see you at the statue"... It was great to renew aquaintances with guys like Big Al (who has a heart so big, they had to put in a pacemaker!). Me and Kent picked up right where we left off 2 years ago in Chicago. We spent most of the time hanging together. It is a site to see 6+ plus Kent and 5'3" Sal bending over a box looking for cards. But we did complete our appointed rounds, as we constantly found stuff the other was looking for. No doubt, Kent is one of my special friends in OBC as we both go back in the group a loooonnnng ways. Does anyone know how to pack a car full of cards like Steve Rittenberg? Dude, you need a U-Haul. Generosity and OBC spirit are this guy's middle names. He personally slammed my Islanders and Knicks and Jets lists. His booth in the back of Kents SUV was one of my favorites! Not to mention guys like Mays and Bench who came my way. Looks like I have to pay more attention to those now. My favorite moments of the show were seeking out cards for other guys. I was on a mission to kill off Ken's 69 topps set and once I had that look in my eye, the set was toast! I really loved looking for stuff for other guys more than my own list. One of the nicest people you'll ever meet is Joe Isaac. Had a great chance to BS with him and Kent during the swap meet. You'd never know the toils Joe goes through with his easy going and friendly attitude. Mike Rich... damn I thought collecting variations was strange enough. Gotta find me some Mets bottle caps now. Mike is one great reference book and seems to smell out deals. Gersh, we are going to find you an affordable Ryan rookie! Bob Reed- gotta love a guy who raises his kids to like Mike Piazza and the Red Sox! And those tickets were great for the game. Very cool stadium! Spike, you're too young to be collecting cards older than Howard! Jim Hatch- who else could find topps cards from the 50s the same size as 52 Bowmans? Go SOX! Caught up with Ron Perry, who wore his McLaughlin throw back OBC hat. Speaking of McLaughlin, John we didn't get enough time to hang out, we'll correct that in Chicago. OBC Oldtimer Trader Doug always finds cool old cardboard, and I was lucky enough to be a recipient of some of that. I met a bunch of new guys like Squirrel, Tom, John, Bill, Gary, Kevin (who lives about 15 miles from me), Tim (who never met a camera he didn't like), Peter, Chris... I know I am missing some, but you guys all left a mark on me. Greg and Wade Conway... gotta love that kid. One exchange..."Sal they want you over by the food table...... NOT REALLY!". He cracks me up. And he does pretty well for himself, next trip I'm going to take a wantlist out of your pocket and you are going to help me find some cards ! Greg and Wade most definitely have a special relationship. And I want a ride on that scooter next What is left to say? Other than me, Kent, and Steve took one for the OBC team and checked out the local "attractions". Someone had to do it! Oh and because of the seek and destroy attitude of many of the guys, I killed off the 68 list and crushed countless others. My lists should be updated this I know that this group, who started out with guys like Jim Montgomery and Trips, and all the guys who have passed my directory, will be around long after I'm gone. We have our headaches, but as the saying goes "this too shall pass" and it always does. The future of this group is in good hands. It always comes down to the spirit of giving and the quote "I gottem, you needem, you gettem". You guys are my friends, my family, my compadres in cardboard. I had a blast and can't wait for Chicago again! Let's shoot for 50 this time... I'll keep the cell phone list! ================= Date: Sat, 14 Aug 2004 17:01:42 -0700 (PDT) To: Geordie Calvert , From: Chris Stufflestreet Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] legit '49B error? I actually own a '48 Bowman Football card with that same double-printing. Larry (Guru) Tipton should have something to add on those...he let me pick the one Steeler out of a stack and bought the rest. All of the cards (about 25) had that same double-printing. I had theorized to Guru that since the '48 Bowman FB cards were printed on three sheets and each sheet had a degree of scarcity...perhaps the cards were run through the printer at a point when Bowman was finishing up one series and preparing to run another. I'm guessing that Bowman didn't fix that problem when the '49 BB cards were being printed. Guru said he was going to try and figure out iwhich players he had, but I never heard any more about it. In 48 Bowman Fb, I have a number of cards with wrong backs, but not double printed. As Chris mentioned they were printed in series. Series 1 was #s 1 4 7 10, etc. Series 2 was #s 2 5 8 11, etc. Series 3 was #s 3 6 9 12, etc. The ones I have are series 3 fronts and series 2 backs. Have about 15 of them. For those that know, series 3 cards book at over $100 ea. I have no idea if the ones I have would be more or less valuable. LOL. They are precious to me regardless. In 1949 Bowman BB, I have a few that are double printed. I thought it was the same player's bio printed twice. It always gives me a headache to try and read the backs of these cards. I will try and pull these out and see if they are different bios. As Sal would say, variations are strange enough. Finding more variations to collect, due to finds from the group. I am going to begin collecting the Red Man cards with different expiration of the offer on the back now. I only have a few Diamond Star cards, but if I ever gete near the set I will add the different backs in that set. Chuch Paris and Steve Rittenberg have caused me to consider collecting teh 1935 Goudeys with the different puzzle poss ibilities. Tom Housely and Steve again have got me interested in collecting Fleer stciker back variations. Was already a greent tint collector so Grant gets no credit for that. LOL. 1977-78 gray/white backs & 1980-81 Topps BSKB panels are Steve's fault. 1953 Topps BB bios. Bob Bannon is the first to hit another new listing 49 & 50 Bowman BB variations. * and ** Topps checklsit variations are almost as stupid a quest as the 1971 Kellogg's BB with and without 1970 in the copyright. LOL. Other sports are not being ignored as I am goign after 1948 Leaf Fb and 1950 Topps Fb & OPC Hockey variations as well. 1981 OPC BB white/gray backs encouraged by our OPCC brethren. A few of us are looking for 1962 Salada BB variation fronts, but I am also looking for the different backs. Dave Kolenda, I think, is the only other OBCer crazy enough to look for Armour coin color variations. To sum it up, I think I have a solution. STOP looking at your cards so carefully. I do NOT need anymore variations to look for and add to my ever expanding wantlists! I was on vacation this last week, attending the wedding of my wife's sister in Ithaca, New York. On Sunday, my wife and I made the two-and-a half hour drive to Cooperstown. It was my first visit to the Hall of Fame. The museum was everything I expected. It was a thrill to see memorabilia from the great moments in the history of the game--Willy Mays's glove from "the catch," a ball commemorating the world series unassisted triple play, and on and on. I enjoyed seeing the programs from every world series, the records wing, and the section on baseball and the media (including the quote, "baseball is the only game you can see on the radio."). Of course, the highlight was the "hall of heroes," with the plaques for every HOFer. There is actually a reverential hush in the room. My wife, who is not at all a baseball fan, actually teared up. She is a history buff and recognized the significance of the room to those of us who are fans. We had to get back to Ithaca for a family dinner and so did not have much time to shop. We hit a few memorabilia stores but did not buy anything. On our way back to the car, I found the one store that had a large selection of vintage cards. However, my three-minute perusal through a box did not turn up anything from my list. One amusing moment came in a memorabilia store. Clete Boyer was signing autographs. A woman stopped, saw the price of an autograph ($10 for a "flat"), and said in a heavy New York accent, "Boyer? Since when did he become worth anything?" I know that many OBCers have been to the Hall. I can add my recommendation. It is well worth your time to make the pilgrimage to Cooperstown. We often hear that many members can only get cards on Ebay since there are no shops or shows in their areas. I am fortunate that there are still shops in my area and there are usually at least 6 shows a month within 30 minutes of my house. When I find what I think are excellent buys I pick them up. Although I send out many of the cards I pick up in OBC fashion. The following are demand cards that I think many might need/want. I picked many up at the National. The rest at local shows. Most of these cost 10% or less of book. I think the most expensive is around 25% of book. Obviously these are not mint, but they are not trashed either. If you need to know condition, these are not for you. They are being offered at the sticker price. I do not think I got much if any discount since they were marked down to begin with. The group below cost over $300 so I am not going to send them all out as OBC RAOK. Hopefully no one in the group is offended by this offering. It is intended to assist group members. Although anyone may claim them, priority will be given to those who have less access to cards or are real close to finishing a set. I guess therefore stories must be sent with claims. I will notify those that "win". Please send address with request. For those that may want a lot, but are on a limited budget, prioritize and/or LMK how much you want to spend. At the Tacoma Dome show I picked up a couple of boxes too cheap to leave there. Most of the cards, about 1,000, are football which I don't collect but thought someone might have some holes in their want lists (or perhaps want a start on a set). The years for the FB cards are1976 - 1982. If you are interested, point me towards (or send me) your wantlists. Included were almost 500 baseball cards, mostly 1979 but some 1980 and 1981. Again, let me know if you are looking for some as I don't collect these either. There obviously aren't any star or rookie cards in this lot, but lots of commons. The Dome show is getting smaller every cycle. If it weren't for Mark Macrae the show would hardly be worth going to. I told Mark that by next November (the next show) they could probably hold it in my living room. Another dealer heard this comment, came over, and asked for my address! Same dealers (fewer each time) with the same picked-over cards as last time(although Mark does a good job of acquiring new selections). No wonder Grant doesn't drift South from B.C. for this show any more, and Brian stays in Oregon. I haven't seen St. Al down here for quite a spell also, but maybe he took a wrong turn in Tukwila and wound up in Spokane! I thought Mike D. was going to make it but wasn't there by the time I left and wasn't answering his cell phone. Guess I'm going to have to find a way to the Nationals to see a real card show. Okay, I'll put in my suggestion... This is a result of the comments made by other OBCers and myself regarding the OBCAC election this year. For those who forgot or weren't here, a recap: When it was pointed out that few members were willing to runfor the board, I pointed out that the "3-year rule" prevented many of the more eager members who otherwise would have been happy to volunteer. I will admit, however, that my wording caused more trouble than it was worth. As a way of making that right, I'd like to pose the following question to the OBCAC (and since I'm tossing this out on the Ramblings server...to the group as well): When dealing with the "3-year rule," when should the date be applied...with the new year or the actual anniversary date? In my own case, I entered OBC on 8/30/2002. Should I be considered a "3 year member" when 2005 begins, or will I need to wait until 8/30/2005 to run for the office? I'm not asking for my own benefit (though the answer does affect me), but I figured it might be a reasonable request to pose, since it will ease a little confusion later. A couple weeks ago, I mentioned some great finds I picked up at a rummage sale (including 1957 Topps cards of Duke Snider and Roy Campanella for $1 each). My wife and I spent a couple of hours this morning going to rummage sales. Rummaging is a way of life in Milwaukee (everybody is too cheap to buy new stuff). Out of several hundred rummage sales listed in the paper, five advertised that they had baseball or sports cards. I got to four of them and couldn't find anything worthwhile. Two had older cards (1960s and 1970s) which had been snapped up on Friday while I was working--the dealers send buyers out first thing to snap up the cards. The other sales had worthless cards from the 1990s. That is typical--my experience is that 24 of 25 rummage sales that advertise baseball cards have only new garbage. However, when we were driving home, we saw a sign for a rummage sale that said "Baseball." This one had not been listed on the paper so I had to go. The guy had lots of worthless new cards. But he also had some neat memorabilia. I picked up a baseball signed by 5 Brewers from the early 1990s. I also picked up a baseball signed by 3 Milwauke Braves--Andy Pafko, Del Crandall, and HANK AARON!!! I paid $5 for this ball. As I was paying, another customer asked who had signed it--I said, "some Braves" without naming Aaron, as I didn't want to start a bidding war. I also picked up three strips of standing room only tickets to the 1979 World Series. The teams are not named. Since then I have been going through a divorce. My sincere hope at the time was that we would part ways relatively quickly and fairly amicably. Unfortunately, neither of my hopes have come true. My situation has been steadily deteriorating while at the same time I've been going through the frustration that is the full compliment of our legal system. Expensive lawyers, endless trivial legal posturing, non-responsiveness of other parties and a court system that barely moves have dampened my spirits, though I'm trying not to let it get to me. We don't have children, we don't own a business together and we don't have a palacial summer residence so I honestly don't know why this is dragging on. With respect to Joe Walsh, "I'm just an ordinary average guy." Other than that, I'm doing very well otherwise. I've been doing a lot of things this summer that I haven't done in a while: seen some cool concerts, gone hiking, went on a couple of trips (including the National), done some golfing (an off year by my standards), played some poker and have gone to parties thrown by friends that have been very supportive of me. Many OBC friends have also been very supportive of me and I thank everyone for that. I have realized that friends and family are getting me through this nightmare and I consider myself very lucky to have lots of both. My list if IO's has been steadily increasing over the summer, too. Folks have sent me some really cool cardboard in recent months. It may take a while, but I'll get y'all back sooner or later! Anyhow, I've been relatively quiet over the summer and that's the reason why. I'm still here, but just like being on a treadmill I'm running hard and going nowhere fast.
