A gorgeous day in the sun, but we kept the baseball cards at home where they'd be dry ! Maybe someday one of these Oregon back roads might lead to the National, or to a Vegas OBC rendez-vous...but for now it's great to have an OBC neighbor just down the road. Thanks Doug ! I have hesitated to provide details regarding the National because there "Life Happens" factors that are still unresolved. My luck has not been good regarding plans to attend OBC related activities of late, but here is my very tentative plan. First, I plan to drive, although I'm not sure Cleveland is ready for both Al & I careening around the city at the same time. Chico, you may want to include those folks who are willing to offer rides to others. I certainly am willing to, but only for the days I'm actually there. My cell number is (810) 577-3691. My tentative plan is to arrive early Friday and attend the ballgame. Not sure where I'm staying, anyone who can offer a place to sleep, I don't take up much room, floors work fine, to the best of my knowledge, I don't snore, and I'll chip in for the cost of a room. I know a few people in the area, but they are quite a distance from the show. I also plan on attending the swap on Sat. My dupes box is very meager for older stuff but I have UV stuff I'll drag along if anyone is interested. I'll probably leave Saturday night after the swap for the trek back home. I did a double take - hoped it w as good omen about the cards. When I get there, the cards are long gone, so they must have been good. Oh well. And the sign? It was for Open Bible Church - but how cool is it to see a blue & white OBC sign looming on the Now for my question - I recently acquired some 1973 Topps manager/coach cards (picked up a box of about 2000 early 70's cards in really nice shape at an estate sale for 20 bucks); I didn't have any of the variations at all in my sets. These have some definite variations - there are trees behind some of the coaches - but a few of them just seem to have darker boxes. The 2002 SCD lists the variations as "orange background" (which I have), and "brown background". No trees listed. Do all of the variations have trees - or do some of them just have a brownish tint? And BTW, if you are collecting these variations too, LMK, since I have a few extras now. As for the other variations - seems the only one I'm missing is the Buddy Bell card with a gap in the right border. Please take a few minutes to read it and refresh your memory about policies and procedures in One thing in there (in the old one as well) that bears repeating is the fact that you are not allowed to have 1981-present cards on your list that is linked to the OBC website. You are more than welcome to have a link from your pre-1981 list to your post-1980 list on your page, but nobody shouldbe able to click on your wantlist link and see anything from after 1980. The ROC says you have 30 days to clean it up after the OBCAC gets a complaint about it. So I would ask everybody to take a look at your list and if it contains 1981-present cards, please link them to another site. I know I sound like a pushy bastard, but that's what I'm paid to do as OBC Facilitator! If you think this rule or any other are silly, please throw your hat in the ring for the OBCAC next year and you too will have the opportunity to shape cardboard policy! Take Care, Geno Yahoo! New e-mail address Hi all... just a quick note to let you know that I'm switching over all of my accounts to Cox.net. After 18 years of being part of AOL (yeah, when I started my disk was AOL v. 1.0... still have it!) , I've dragged my heels long enough. We no longer have a computer that is supported by AOL. They are not upgrading their services for old Macs and we are not allowed to install it on my wife's work PC (for good reason). Plus, I'm already paying Cox for the high speed internet connection and we could use the extra $14.95 a month (hey, maybe I'll be able to afford that '58 Teddy Ballgame now! ). It'll take most the rest of the month to get everything smoothed out (changing e-mail links on my websites, etc.) but I've already changed all my Yahoo group memberships to the new e-mail address. I've also changed to digest format, which should help me be more responsive to folks who write individual notes to me. Take care and thanks for your patience during these changes... ================= Date: Sun, 11 Jul 2004 12:08:35 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: ursaner@seas.upenn.edu Subject: A Few 1973 Topps Availables I figured while I had a few minutes I could either update my wantlist...or send out a few availables. This place, called Field of Dreams on Doubleday Farms, was really in the middle of nowhere, and the guy who owns it used to own a minor league team in South Carolina. After he sold it, he wanted to do something related to baseball, so on his farm (which is also a bed and breakfast) he built this field and there are games every Wed-Sat with a different major leaguer. We dressed in old style uniforms (very hot!) and played a game with teams split by lottery. I ended up playing half the game at SS and the other half in CF. No errors on my few chances. At the plate, I ended up 3 for 4 with two singles, a double, a run, and an RBI, but I did swing pretty ugly at a number of pitches, especially every curve ball I saw! We ended up coming back to win 7-4. It was tons of fun. My wife took some video of Fergie playing RF with me in CF, but also has some very ugly swings captured on film. I also realize now how old I have become, because I was amazed how slow I got to 2B on a ball that almost rolled to the wall. I guess that explains my lacks of triples in softball the last few years! After the game, they had a cook-out and Fergie told some stories, answered questions, and signed autographs for about an hour. Since there were only 18 of us, there was a lot of 1 on 1 time. He saw my Red Sox fan and started talking about how clueless Don Zimmer is and always has been, and how he has been fooling baseball people for 60 years. He talked about his 13 homeruns more proudly than his 267 complete games or nearly 300 wins, and rattled off the 13 pitchers he hit them off. He talked about how times have changed, and if he was facing Bob Gibson or another HOF on a certain day, they each expected to pitch 9 innings and would kick and scream to be left in. He said he would pitch Bonds hard and in, and that Willie McCovey was the hardest batter to face but Tony Perez had the most success against him. My sons even talked to him a bit, calling him “Mr. Jenkins” which gave him a few chuckles. All in all, a great guy, very fan friendly and approachable, and very likable 9see the attached picture for a HOF player and a wannabe!). After we left, the drive home was a little over an hour. About 10 minutes from home, I got a call asking if I had left my wallet there. It seems as if, when buying an autographed picture of Bill Lee, I put my wallet down on a table and left it there. Before the next game, Fergie sat down and found it, so he looked through it and found my cell phone number inside and called. I ended up driving back again and after he gave me my wallet, we talked again for another 15 minutes. He told me he had offered to drop it off the following morning on the way to the airport, but was told me house was in the opposite direction of the airport. All in all, a super day. It’s nice to see a guy with both successes and failures in his life be so “normal”. He was playing with and against a bunch of aging doctors, but was complimentary of good plays and asked some questions about our chosen field as well. Even though he didn’t enjoy his two years in Fenway, Fergie now has a new bunch of fans in my family. ================= Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 17:03:22 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "Joe Isaac" Subject: Re: Rules of Conduct If anyone with an OBC-style wantlist has post-80 lists on your wantlist and would like a UV link, email me and I will take care of this for you. Prior to posting the message, I had gone through the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards and had not found anything. After I posted the message, however, I decided to give Mr. Burdick's American Card Catalog a shot and I *might* have found them. Looking under his postcard section, there's a big section on baseball postcards. The one I think might fit is PC795 -- Reprints of Old Sports Cards, other pictures from books, etc. ca. 1958. Let me know if that sounds reasonable plausible or if one of you has ever actually seen a PC795 and know that its very different from what I scanned. At any rate, it's kind of neat stuff... Mike Rich came right over as I approached Bill Henderson's table, but before I could leave the table, I met up with Steve Rittenberg, Ken Morganti and Joe Issac. Greg Conway, Kent Goto, Kevin Martens and Sal Domino all met up with me a little further in. Despite two different trips to the IX Center today, I didn't have enough time to see everything...but then again I was joined by my wife and daughter. Melissa will be 6 next month but spent a lot of time today trying to decide whether to be shy or flirtatious. Though I had to watch my daughter more closely than the bargain bins, my wife Ellen was searching and found some decent acrds from my wantlists. A big thank you goes out to Ellen for a '58 All Star card of the Mick! Thanks also go out to SAL DOMINO for an envelope containing only one hit...but it was a nice shot! The SCP was one of the last cards needed for my '74 set...it was the Washington variation of the #599 Rookie Pitchers card. Thanks to Sal and a couple cards I found in a bargain box, I am now 13 cards away from completing the '74 set with all variations...and most are supposed to be easy hits. Thanks to all today's activity, I am getting very close on a few 1970s sets: 1978 - need two, Munson and Molitor. 1977 - Now need 10. 1976 - need 4. 3 are ATGs and one is a common. 1975 - 17 left, but most are biggies. Going to the front office won't do any good either because everybody will blame another department. They have a good racket going in the parking lot, so be prepared. For Friday's show, I went by myself and Ellen and Melissa went to Geauga Lake (which is really a better place for a wife and daughter than a card show). We decided to avoid having to pay another $7 to just drop me off and figured out a neat way to circumvent any trouble...Ellen pulled up to an exit, and I jumped the Once inside, I found a makeshift OBC table and met a few more members who weren't there Friday. I got a few more cards from members, and I'll thank them all at once here: JOE ISAAC shared his dupes box and I was able to pull 9 hits to my '71-'73 lists, including Tommy Davis, Koosman and Torre. SPIKE GLIDDEN added a '60 Pascual All-Star Hi# and a '71 semi-hi#. PETER MEAD handed over an envelope stuffed with a '53 Bowman of Jimmy Dykes and 4 more cards for my woefully under-populated '63 Topps project. TRADER DOUG passed along some more '60s cards with '68s of Kaat and a Yanks RC, plus a dozen '61s including Robin Roberts and Rocky Bridges. STEVE RITTENBERG was generous with his dupes, letting me take another 20 hits off my '66 list including guys like Perez, Morgan, Wilhelm and Marichal. These get me down to the 200 mark for the set...looks like I'm going to have to fret over those blasted Hi #s and SPs soon! Steve also picked up a '75 Morgan at Bill Henderson's table for me. A funny thing happened during the show, and it was because I was wearing my OBC hat. I ran across the dealer who posted on the OBC message board. While looking at the cards in his showcase, I heard him say, "Hey OBC guy! I have some boxes for you!" He pulled out four boxes marked "Tiptons" and had me take a look. I pulled over 150 hits from his dime box from '57-'73, then found some neat stuff from his other boxes...some '58 All-Stars including Musial, Stengel/Haney and Moose Skowron, a McCarver RC that really wasn't all that bad, a '53 Bowman B&W of Mize, a '51 Bowman Hi#, a '69 Rose AS, bunches of '55 and '56 cards for 50 cents each, and a bunch of others. When I finished, I ended up with about $54 worth of stuff, and he knocked off $10 from a total I thought was quite reasonable to begin with! Great seller, if you see me at the show, I'll be happy to show you where he is. I picked up some more stuff at a few other tables, but that was the deal of the day. I was able to get my '55 Topps wantlist down to 88, knocked some 200 cards off my '60s lists and had a great time. After the show, I caught a ride to Jacobs Field with Big Al. The game went into extra innings, but I had to leave in the 10th when Ellen called and informed me that either I meet her at the gate when she passed or else I needed to find a nice seat in the visitors' clubhouse to sleep in. I'll get Part 3 on the servers after today's festivities...I'm going to the show to get Joe Greene's auto, meet a couple more OBCers and then attend the Saturday Night Swap I've heard so much Take care, P.S.: One thing I've noticed (and Kevin Martens also pointed out)...OBC is the only group that is making a noticeable presence at the National. Day 1: Thursday I get dropped off at Boston's Logan Airport at about 12:30 for a 2:00 flight to Cleveland. Since I'm bringing an air mattress with me I have to check a piece of luggage (the room I booked for Doug Smith and I through Priceline only had one bed). Spike Glidden arrives at the gate a bit later and we catch up on recent goings-on. We were going to play cribbage on the plane but we both forget to check seat assignments or trade seats with other passengers. We arrive in Cleveland at 3:45. Before the trip I did some research with regard to hotel shuttle transportation to and from the airport. I found out that my hotel does not have a shuttle of any kind, but three nearby hotels do have shuttle services. Plan A to get to my hotel was to take another shuttle and simply walk next door or across the street to my hotel. After a half hour of waiting for one of these shuttles I find out that they are "on call" which is different from what I'm used to in Boston, where the shuttles make continuous loops through the airport all day. So, Plan B was to meet up with Doug Smith when he arrives at the airport at 4:30. I wait for him at the car rental courtesy shuttle area (I know he's renting a car) and sure enough I catch up with him! I love it when a haphazard plan comes together! We get Doug's car and find our way to the hotel. After unpacking and inflating my bed. Doug calls Spike who mentioned interest in dinner. Doug and I manage to find Spike's hotel. While waiting for Spike and his roomie Ken Morganti, other OBC'ers start pouring out of the same hotel: Mike Rich, Sal Domino, Kent Goto, Kevin Martens and his wife, St. Al Cummings, Greg Conway and Wade and Steve Rittenberg. The bunch of us get some pictures outside the hotel and take about an hour to decide where to go for dinner. We're told that some restaurants are right down the road, which turns out to be untrue. We give up and turn around and stumble upon an Applebees where through the magic of cell phones we meet Chris Stufflestreet and his family. My one requirement for dinner was someplace where I could get an ICE COLD BEER. Let me tell you: the Sam Adams I had was the most delicious beer I've had all year, even though I've consumed more of Sam's beer than I care to admit. It just REALLY hit the spot! After dinner, Doug and I head back to our hotel. We get an unexpected knock and it's Bob Reed, who is also staying at our hotel. He and his kids had just come back from the Wal-Mart across the street and noticed Doug and I through the outside window. We exchange greetings and a good night, as it's getting a little late - gotta get some sleep for the long days ahead. Day 2: Friday Doug and I head to the IX Center and Bob Reed follows us with his family. Seven bucks to park is a turn off but we have no choice as the IX center is in the middle of nowhere next to the airport. While in line, we only notice one other OBC hat and the person wearing it is unfamiliar to us. I wave him up to cut a couple of rows to where we are but he decides against it, which is probably a good idea as a riot just might have ensued. After we get in, we wait to introduce ourselves. Turns out it's Joe Isaac whom I hadn't met before. The very first table inside the show I spot another hat whose owner is unfamiliar to me. I introduce myself and it's Peter Mead. My strategy at a big show like this is to start at the back and work my way forward. I figure while all of the folks are swarming the front tables because they're close, I can go to the back of the hall and search some unfamiliar dealer's tables without any hassle. I try to get to where I'm going and keep bumping in to OBC'ers in full force. This is a good thing since I'm on this trip at least as much to meet, talk and catch up with people as I am to buy cards. If I just wanted to buy cards, I'd stay home and scour ebay. I run into Tim Newcomb along the way and we search for vintage. Also later on I meet John McLaughlin for the first time and also renew acquaintances with Larry Gersbach. I also run into all of the folks I had dinner with the night before at one time or another during the show. Through a dealer contact, I find out that Mark Macrae was in the building but only for a short while. I was lucky enough to find him and finally exchange live greetings after having corresponded with him for many years. Because of all the run-ins with other OBC'ers I've only managed to spend $10 before lunch at 1:00. After lunch I got some good deals, though: managed to unearth a W516 Ty Cobb for short money and a couple of 1960 Topps hits. As the afternoon was winding down I find a table with all sorts of things on it, including some binders. I notice the top row of some binders are damaged by water or mildew or something. I find a 1960 Topps Drysdale and I ask how much. The dealer says a buck. I pull out some other 1960 stars: Aparicio and Ashburn and ask how much. He says and of the water damaged stars I can have for a buck each. I rifle through the album and pull out 20 cards, including a 1957 Slaughter; 1958 Slaughter, Flood RC, Billy Martin, Matthews AS and F Robby AS; 1959 F Robinson; 1962 Clemente and 1967 Maris. He then tells me I can have any of the water damaged commons for a nickel each. I pull the rest of the cards which include a bunch of 1959 high numbers and a couple of 1962 green tints. What cards I didn't give away currently reside in my moof-buster container with some candles. I will check on their progress at the end of August. At the end of the day, we all headed over to Jacobs Field to take in an Indians/Royals game. The Jake is a great ballpark. I don't have much to compare it to, but the facility is fantastic and every vendor I purchased from was extremely friendly. They make a pretty good BBQ chicken sandwich, too! During the game I was able to meet Bill Malson for the first time! The game was a good one, going into extra innings when Ben Broussard hit a game winning homer. During the game, OBC got mentioned in lights on the big scoreboard above the bleachers. How cool is that??? Day 3: Saturday In line at the IX Center, Tim Newcomb leaves his place in line and comes backwards to stand with Bob Reed, Doug and I. We notice another OBC hat whose owner we do not recognize while standing in line. Turns out it's Tom Housley! We all roam the show in search of bargain bins and whatever else catches our eye. I hook up with Spike Glidden to search for whatever together and have a great time doing it. According to Bill Henderson, 16 OBC'ers have "registered" at his table. I'm sure there were a few others as there were many more than 16 of us at the show during the week. Once again I have trouble spending dough before lunch. This is probably a reflection on my spending habits more than anything else :-) During lunch, Ron Perry arrives and says hello to a bunch of us at a food court table. After lunch, Spike and I press onward. At the far end of the building we notice an OBC hat and introduce ourselves to Scott "Squirrel" Earle. The afternoon doesn't bring too many bargains for me, but I did pick up an in tact Lasorda RC for $15. I kick myself because I probably could have had it for less. Later, I negotiate a $2 1957 Early Wynn down to $1 and a 1911 Zeenut marked for $15 down to $6. I've been told I'm a pretty good negotiator when it comes to cards, but this may be due to the fact that the dealers are only too happy to rid themselves of the low grade cards I collect. At the end of the day I realize that I didn't spend as much as I thought I was going to spend at the show. I'm going to use the savings to buy new sneakers - I didn't know how little support my old clunkers gave me until I walked untold miles of the concrete IX Center floor. Doug and I drop Bob Reed off and head to another hotel for the swap. When we arrive, a gentlemen comes over to us in the parking lot and asks if one of us is Ken Morganti. Sorry to disappoint, I introduce myself to John Leroux. Inside, the three of us wait for Ken to open up the swap room for us. When he arrives, others slowly fill the room. By my count, there were 20 OBC'ers present for the swap. Kevin Savage and JD Heckathorne (sp?) sponsored the OBC swap session, providing funds for the room and a pizza buffet (knowing this beforehand, I made it a point to thank them both personally at the show and purchase some stuff from both). Spike brought in a box of UV cards and we started the night by cracking open some packs. My, how times have changed in only two years! Cards then began to fly: a FCFS auction format and folks raiding others' wantlists. The highlight of the night was when someone (Chris? Joe?) tried to flip a card across the room and it landed directly onto the bill of Sal's cap! I took a picture to prove it! Remind me not go ever flip cards with whomever threw that one! Also, someone (Yaz?) set up a slide show of the weekend's festivities on a PC. During the swap Mark Talbot, whom I hadn't met before, arrived with his goodies in tow. I managed to give away some cards and received some cards in return. I also lost and 8-4 game to Spike, playing the 1968 game cards. I had great time for sure as cards flew and stories were told until about midnight. Day 4: Sunday Doug Smith drops me off at the airport in the morning and I thank him for driving me all over the city. I check in fairly quick and find that Spike is already at the gate. We have enough time to squeeze in a game of cribbage before the flight. Because the flight was not quite full there was an empty seat next to me, so I invite Spike back to play more cribbage during the flight home. While I didn't keep track, Spike definitely got the best of me. The last game came down to the wire when my pegging skills left me in the dead hole giving Spike the game. Coming up just short..the story of my life! When we land in Logan, we make our way through the sea of DNC folks and head home. Other "Mindless Ramblings" The IX Center is a pretty decent facility. Real easy to get to and plenty of space for shopping and resting. I can't comment on the food as I brought my own to the show. It was interesting to note that the autograph signers were located in the back corner of the hall. I imagine this is probably the "casino effect" where you can't get anywhere unless you go through a gaming area, increasing the probability you'll drop some dough on slots or other games of By my count, there were 25 OBC'ers present during my time at the show. I don't think this is a record: I seem to remember that there were a few more in Chicago two years ago. An impressive turnout nevertheless. When you go to any larger show, be sure to wear your OBC hat. The circuit dealers DO know who we are and what we collect and many are happy to help us out. As proof, dealer William Chappelle (I think from Georgia) had a couple of boxes labeled "Tiptons" just for us. Of course, others will always give the OBC discount and be glad to chat a bit unless their busy conducting other There were hardly any beater pre-war cards in the building. Usually I'll buy cheap pre-war cards but they were virtually nonexistent. Perhaps they were scoured up earlier in the week. Perhaps dealers don't want to bring "junk" to a big show like this, preferring to sell higher end material to cover their expenses (this is totally understandable). Perhaps there just isn't that much beater pre-war out there, having already been absorbed in collections like Many dealers I spoke with gave a lukewarm response when I asked how the show was going for them. Many had planned to tear down Saturday evening or early Sunday and take off. Maybe some of the others who stayed Sunday can verify dealer attendance levels. It was Jacobs Field replica giveaway night at the game on Friday to celebrate Jake's 10th anniversary. A cool little piece that will go well with the other mish mash of things in my den. Some Lebron James/Micheal Jordan 1/1 card was reportedly sold for over $150k on Friday. This is sad and I'll let you draw your own conclusions without saying anything else about it. At the swap session Saturday, we were visited by Kevin Savage's associate Pat Blandford. He said he just had to see what our swap session was all about. He was only going to stay for a bit but probably stayed for 3 or 4 hours, telling us about his collection and giving us insights into the business end of our hobby. Pat made an interesting observation that before the days of the National as we know it, a bunch of collectors from all over would gather in a hotel room somewhere and swap cards, much like our swap session. It's appropriate that we do things "the way it should be" since we are a throwback group I had a fantastic time in Cleveland. I'm proud to be a part of this group and have been since day one of my acceptance years ago. Thanks to everyone for some cool cards and great camaraderie throughout the weekend! I'm already looking forward to Chicago in 2005! As best as I can recall I met 19 new OBC friends along with three old friends who I've already had the pleasure. I think I at least introduced myself to everyone at the show with the exception of John Leroux and if Dave Hornish was there I must have missed him also. We arrived Friday around 1:00P. My wife, Ranaye accompanied me on the trip since this was vacation time for both of us and both of us have been wanting to catch a game at Jacobs Field. We weren't sure what she was going to do while I spent time at the show, but we were hoping that there would be some shopping or a nice mall or something where she could spend around four hours time before heading to our hotel and checking in. Unfortunately, the IX Center is located in the middle of nowhere and she did not feel like venturing out on her own, so we decided that she would accompany me through the show on Friday. To show what a good sport she is she even suggested that I buy any large bulky items now so she could carry them for me. I took her up on her offer and picked up a box of cards, a couple of albums, some nine pocket pages and a plastic ball cube. We had a nice time walking around and meeting OBCers as we went. I picked up a few cards here and there and splurged $25 for a Denny McLain autograph that I added to my Tigers Baseball card/autograph book. Sometime around 5:30 we left to find our hotel and get checked in and head out to the Indian's game. We were looking for the Cleveland Airport Marriott located on 150th street but when Ranaye wrote the address somehow it came out 15th Street. So guess what happens now when I get out the directions from Map Quest for directions to 4277 W 15th St. instead of 150th St. Anyway, to make a long story short, by the time we figure out what we did and get headed in the right direction and find 150th St. and get checked in it's almost game Since there's a train station across the street from our hotel that runs a rapid transit train to the ball park we decide to take that. Of course we get to the station just in time to see the train leave, so it was about a half hour till the next one came along. Everyone we talked to said the train drops you off right at the park, just a short walk. It might be considered a short walk if your on time, but by now it was getting late and I didn't think we'd ever get there, but we did finally make it in the bottom of the sixth. Fortunately, the game went into extra innings with the Indians winning with an 11th inning walk off home run. Great game and a great time with a bunch of great people. Saturday Ranaye stayed at the hotel and I took the Hotel Shuttle to the show. I met a few more OBCers and found some real nice deals on some much need cardboard, nothing like some of the pro's come up with mind you, but not too bad. I did bring some boxes of cards, dupes and oddball stuff that I hoped to get rid of at the swap session, but since Ranaye spent the day by herself at the hotel we went out for a nice dinner. Again time got away from me and it was getting pretty late. I had to cancel out on the swap session. Even though I missed the swap meet I did manage to pick up cards from a number of Sal Domino handed me a 65T and two 68s, Doug Smith gave me nine 76T and these were NOT commons, Scott Earle gave me a big stack of 84T, Kent Goto gave me nine 80T which leaves just one card left on that list. I'm almost sure I'm forgetting some but let me say thanks to all, it was a great time. Any time you can make it to one of these events be sure to wear your OBC hat. It comes with a lot of prestige. Hat, shirt, pants, socks with a backup set to wear while the first one's airing out. More room for cards! After some quick packing Thursday morning and two hours' office work, it was a quick subway ride to the airport to meet up with Jim Hatch. He wasn't sporting a Hawaiian shirt (yet), but the OBC hat's easy to spot. We exchanged pleasantries, then waited out the 80 minute flight to Cleveland. Who would we meet? What would we buy? Most importantly--would we see Bob Wickman pitch on Friday? (yes) Once on the ground, my hotel shuttle grabbed me for a short ride back to the hotel. On the shuttle was none other than Jimmy Pearsall! No spelling mistake, though--this was a younger, heavy-set Jimmy Pearsall in from North Carolina for the show (and yes, he gets "Jimmy Piersall?" all the time). We talked cards for a while. The shuttle driver mentioned that his dad had a big collection of old stuff that he's just starting to sell off. It sounded too good to be true (autographed Ruth, Gehrig, etc), but who knows? Maybe everyone in Cleveland has baseball cards. The Brook Park Days Inn would be my home for a few days, sharing a room with Ken. I tried to check in, but my name wasn't on the tab. Doh! No problem, only a couple hours until he gets back from the show, so I waited it out. When Ken arrived, it turns out the staff missed a note TAPED TO THE FRONT DESK asking to add my name. Doh again! Our room was well air-conditioned, a welcome break from the humidity. Dinner that night would include many OBCers, so we attempted a caravan to Applebee's. After a bit of misdirection, aka "sightseeing in outer Cleveland," we circled back to a turn we missed the first time. About 16 people made it. Met some new faces that night, with Chris Stufflestreet, Kevin Martens, and Sal Domino among them. After dinner, I followed Ken to his football card poker night, a running trading with a group of his friends. Ken fronted me a pair of 1972 high numbers, which were turned into chips by book value. Play went back and forth throughout the night, eventually closing up near 1am. Learned some new games and made some rookie mistakes ("Guess I'll be matching the pot again, then."). Thanks to a couple of long Guts games, I finished up 129 chips, which bought me back the 1972 high numbers, a glossy Ron Dayne card, and a couple of jersey cards of recent guys. Got outbid on a Favre RC, my first choice, though. Sleep finally arrives! Breakfast on IHOP's Paradise Pancakes with Ken. We got the "special syrups," banana and coconut flavor. Mmm. Show time was at 9am thanks to procured dealer badges and it's time to look at tables. Show notably larger than last year at Atlantic City and dealers mostly reported better sales. 20+ rows of tables means splitting the work into two days. Stopped by Kurt's and Kevin's tables and said hi. Kurt's mom had just died and he drove overnight to make the show after the memorial. We find out later than Kevin was just inducted into the baseball card dealer's HOF. Only two hours to lunch and time to meet more OBCers! There's a ferris wheel in the middle of the exhibition hall, conveniently splitting it into two groups of tables. Get to the ferris wheel on day one and you can finish the rest on day two. Friday held the best vintage deals, with a bunch of pre-war grabs (33-36 Goudey, 34 Diamond Stars, 39 Play Ball) and some post-war to keep it company (48-50 Bowman). The ever-present oddball table yielded #5 type hits, including 1970s Laughlin cards and a 1936 Wheaties panel ("Shortstop: Learn to play it right!" says Arky Vaughn). Ran into Mark Macrae at a dealer table and saw several of the big show regular dealers with OBC stuff. (One with a box labeled "Tiptons"--you know I had to buy stuff there.) Friday night meant an Indians game at the Jacobs Field, a pretty park surrounded by oversized guitars (a Cleveland signature) and steeped in baseball history. We watched them fight it out with KC, another young team working on the pieces of a 2005 or 2006 playoff run. Saw sharp defensive plays, including a Matt Lawton catch against the fence and a late-innings double play started by ex-Red Sox Lou Merloni. Grady Sizemore (any relation to Ted?) had his first hit, an RBI double. An 11th-inning walk-off homer sent us home happy and entertained. Some confusion in riding arrangements ("Sal? Are you still in the parking lot?") delayed our departure a bit, but once we were on the road, it was smooth sailing. With Al driving! I testify it's the truth. Then, more sleep. On Friday, met Bill Malson, Greg Conway, Larry Gersbach, and Peter Mead for the first time. (Was there more? Could be, darn that CRS.) No fooling around Saturday morning. Ken and I are up and off to Wal-Mart for McDonalds breakfast and drinking supplies to carry us through the day. Five guys into the SUV and a dealer badge gets me into the show (thanks Steve and Kent). Meet up with Jim Hatch early and started a sweep of the other side of the ferris wheel. Run into Scott Earle and Tom Housley along the way. Talk to a guy from Oldcardboard.com for a while and check out the prototype of their first magazine. Saturday's hits don't come as quickly, as this side doesn't have much beat-up vintage. A follow-up trip to Friday's territory grabs a 1953 Podres RC for $25 (Quoth the dealer: "You're killing me! That's a $300 card!" Pause. "Okay, $25."). A $3 1940 Play Ball Jimmy Evers and 1971 Topps Greatest Moments #5 are highlights. One table with $2 and $3 1952s is the best the "far side" has to offer. That's okay, though--back to the hotel for swapping! The hotel moved us from floor one to three and the room was just big enough to hold our cards and pizza. Kevin Savage's assistant Pat stops by to check out the swap and we thank him for sponsoring the feast of cheese and Coke. Cards and OBCers arrive in large quantities. Meet Mark Talbot and John Leroux for the first time. My camera went largely unused Friday, but make up for lost time by snapping OBCers and their show finds. Mark passes me a half-dozen "Bucky Jackson" Goudey cards, what a guy! St. Al lets take a Diamond Star Averill from him, payback to come. Steve Rittenberg hits me with an Eddie Murray RC and a couple other OBCers knock the 1978 list down to three. I get a 7% dealer scum Musial RC from Steve. There were a few other cards--remind me if they're from you! Need to write everything down next time. Side note: I always grab cheap baseball wax heading out the door to get some pack-ripping excitement. Friday night, 2002 UD Honor Roll and Saturday, 2002 Topps. You may recall that 2002 Topps included original, vintage HOF Topps cards randomly inserted in packs, along with the vast number of other inserts. Saturday's box yielded a 1967 Joe Morgan, original and looking good. Lesson: Even when you buy new, sometimes you get vintage. Sunday morning was breakfast with Ken and Steve at Cracker Barrel. Pancakes with apples and they grabbed the check! Guess there'll be money left in my pocket after all. Flight at 11:30, so no show for me, but say my goodbyes and get back in the airport shuttle. The driver is still talking his dad's card collection, this time saying he sold some stuff through a dealer at the show. Who knows? It could happen. Jim Hatch and I meet at the gate and find a folding table and two chairs nearby. Looks like cribbage! We played a couple games, then continue it onto the plane, trading seats to keep the cards going. Another short flight back and now the Boston airport is decked out for the Democratic National Convention. "Need street maps? Guidebooks?" ask the attendants. "Thanks, we're getting home," we say, then Jim and I shake hands at the baggage claim. Another great trip! Thanks for all the cards and camaraderie, guys! Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Other than meeting my boyhood idol "Mean" Joe Greene...Not much to say about my Saturday at the National that hasn't been reported already, but I did get a little overwhelmed at the Swap that night. I tried to write down all that I recieved, so here goes: SCOTT EARLE - OBC's "Squirrel" handed me a '77 RC and a UV Nettles. MIKE RICH - a '73 semi-Hi and my first '78 BK Tiger. TOM HOUSLEY - a Phil Niekro from the birthyear set JOE ISAAC - 15 from my '60s lists including card #1 from '64 and a half of a '64 RC. KEN MORGANTI - A big hit...the Fisk RC! JIM HATCH - Forcing me to paw through his dupes, I ended up with about 60 hits to my '58-'73 needs, a '67 Drysdale and the last card from the '70 set. STEVE RITTENBERG - All through the evening, Steve kept piling it on. First, a Munson RC, then some Yanks stuff from TCMA, some type cards (W575-1, W515, and '61 Union Oil), a '72 Sunoco strip of 9 and a near set of '80/'81 Topps Basketball team posters...missing only the Knicks, Celts and Mavericks (Any heros?). I don't usually collect hoops stuff, but I made the mistake of asking Steve what year those posters were...and was told to figure it out when I got home! (Note to self: next time, ask Steve what his Glendale cards are). Steve also handed my daughter Melissa a couple of UV items. SPIKE GLIDDEN - my second '49 MP & Co. card, purportedly showing Ralph Kiner. GERSH - I got three hits to my '55 set...what he called "Gersbach originals!" My '55 set is down to 88 now, and I'm considering focusing on it for the rest of the year. MARK TALBOT - an SCP of the highest order...a scarce series 1957! AL CUMMINGS - simply asked to see my wantlist and then proceeded to quietly tear it up...my first '41 Double Play, almost 60 hits to my '65-'71 lists including HOFers and a big hit to the short '75 list...a Yount GREG CONWAY - Yaz delivers in the clutch, with a '58 Elston Howard and a '63 Hi #. BOB REED - finds one card for my VERY short '74 list...the Carew/Morgan All Star card. TIM NEWCOMB - sets me up with my first M101-4 and E120 cards, plus some great hits to the '73 set including Ruth, Gehrig and Frank Robby! RON PERRY - passes along a '58T and a '73 Mays. KENT GOTO - a nice stack of '70/'71 cards...I was about to take a peek at his '72s but the swap session broke up...I also never got around to taking him up on his offer to start me on the '75 minis. Maybe next That stack of new cards kept me busy updating my wantlists until well past 2 AM. This was my first OBC swap, and I must admit that it was the best part of my weekend in Cleveland. My flight was about 45 minutes late arriving in Cleveland Thursday night--and I was wondering where I might catch up with my roomie for the night. I didn't have to wonder long as Mike Rich pulled up outside the airport as I walked out the door. I don't even think he had to stop his car. A quick dinner and a couple of detours and we ended up at a Day's Inn on the other side of the airport. It is always good to see Mike--and I always learn something whether it be a variation, coke caps, or something form Mike's pursuit of 500 different sets. A large thanks to Mike for being my wheels for the weekend--and for a stack of 54 Bowmans including Hodges, a few 53 Topps including Johnnie Mize, a few Red Men and some other stuff. Friday morning after the best cheap breakfast in Cleveland--we head off to the show. I go to the general admission line and Mike heads off to the other side of the building. Didn't see any other OBCers in line--but I did get a phone call from Mike telling me that he had found one of the last two 1968 KDKA Pirates I needed--which only left Roy Face. I can't say that I had any real plan on how to attack the show--it is really too big for one day--so I tried to frequent the tables that Ken and Steve gave us a heads up on. I had a couple of goals for the day--I really wanted to finish off my 1966 set (only need Denny McLain #540). I figured that would be pretty easy. Idid run into a bunch of guys through the course of the day--Kent, Sal, Trader Doug (thanks for the 34 Goudey), Jim Hatch, Joe Isaac, Gersh, St. Al, Chris Stufflestreet, Steve R., Ken, Spike, Yaz, Bob Reed--somehow I missed Kevin Martens, Tim Newcomb and John Mclaughlin, but we did meet at the game. I did pick up a few decent deals--a stack of about 90 1962 Post Canadians in true Tipton condition for $25, and hits to about 20 different sets. Couldn't find the missing 68 KDKA and only saw three 66 McLains with the cheapest being $50.00 (thanks to everyone for looking for me) but did finish my 61 Fleer set picking up a Teddy Ballgame at the last table I visited. I also had to figure that I couldn't go to a show without Steve finishing one ofmy sets--so a large thank you for a 66 Topps football funny ring checklist(and for the 1958s). On to the ball game on a truly beautiful great lakes summer evening. I kind of watched the game--but I talked more with the folks sitting in my section. Met Bill Malson outside at the Bob Feller statue (where I also met up with my wife who had driven down from western NY for the game). Entertaining game at an attractive park--had to leave in the bottom of the ninth and drive the 100 miles home. Sorry I couldn't hang around for the swap--soundslike a hoot! Great day, great time with great folks. I suppose--once upon a time I was amazed by the generosity of this group's members, but then I have realized it is just part of who we are---and in the immortal words of DigDug---- OBC--'nuff said, Peter Mead ================= To: "ramblings" Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2004 21:54:43 -0400 From: "Sean McGowan" Subject: Maryland in 1969 Ok kids, you *must* look at this picture that my mother dug up and emailed to me. Computer crashed last year, switched servers in February and have been fixing thing ever since. I have been very good at updating my home page but every once in awhile I get a card that had been checked off already or received a comment about the page that seemed out of place or received an email toa box seldom used with access not widespread. At the National, Peter Mead gave me 4 Nucard Scoops and I made a comment about how nice it was to have hits to my new list. He said "Well, the page said you'd take any". I agreedbut when I thought about it I was sure I had took that comment off the page when I put on the list. I went home and all four cards were hits to the list so I kind of figured he did indeed check the list but the comment wasn't there so maybe he just remembered it from checking my page before. Today I investigated and discovered that while I had indeed been updating my page, I had failed to change the links to my wantlist that are on my opening page when I changed servers. Therefore that page continued to display my lists from the old server dated from last year. Sheesh, what a dummy! It's all fixed now so you guys can all plunge in! Can anyone elaborate? ================= Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 19:25:56 EDT To: undisclosed-recipients:; From: cardclctor@aol.com Subject: The Nationals Greetings gang, I'm finally settled in from my trip to Chicago. Softball and work imediately after my return has kept me busy for a day or so, but let's rewind about a week and recap some of the highlights... MONDAY: Set out for Cleveland from my aunt's house in NY after spending an evening with my cousins who I haven't seen in a couple months (or a year or so depending on which one). The drive was nearly perfect without any of the scorching weather of past trips. I made good time getting there, since I only had to stop a couple times on the way - once just before I got on the highway for gas, once in Cleveland to refill the tank and once to grab a bite to eat. Six hours later and I had checked into the Days Inn. Seven hours later, I had finally signed on to check my e-mail after a very frustrating phone problem. (Lack of high speed internet and half a buck for local calls combined to really irritate me.) Read an e-mail from Steve that he was just preparing to leave when I checked in, so I could expect him a little later than originally planned. Got caught up on sleep after checking out the room for the swap. Steve got his room key from the front desk and arrived without incident during one of the few competent moments for the Days Inn staff. TUESDAY: Steve went to go help Kevin Savage set up for the show. Since I was on vaccation and not inclined to do any heavy lifting for by badge, I opted to return to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I enjoyed the ride over and breakfast at Cracker Barrel, particularly since I didn't have to drive after logging twelve total hours on the road the previous two days. The museum was a little different and I got to see some of the things I missed the previous trip. I was saddened that the Pats display was the smallest of any team's though. You'd think that a recent two time Superbowl champion that had three enshrined members would get an upgraded display from the single picture frame they have. Other teams with only one HOF'er had much bigger presentations with uniforms, helmets and plaques, while the Patriots display consisted of a lone photo of John Hannah - and I don't think there was even a signb designating who the person in the picture was. Returned to the room about an hour or so before Steve and we went to see Spiderman 2 after locating a local movie theatre. I filled up on popcorn and vetoed the dinner at Olive Garden. I further frustrated Steve by acting as his conscience and nixing the apple pies to go with his salad at the drive through. (He shouldn't have asked me.) WEDNESDAY: Sneak preview day for VIP members. Despite my mild protests for heading to the IX Center early, we arrive at the show around 10 AM. Not all of the dealers had set up the day before (and some hadn't set up well after we got there). Fortunately, Kurt Tourdot's table was there (even though Kurt was not - sadly he was attending his Mom's funeral and wake). I grabbed a 1964 Mantle for $20 and convinced another dealer that a 1969 Mays was only worth ten bucks. which was one of the few highlights of my purchases. I also picked up a couple UV football boxes for Donruss' "Box Wars" promotion - more on that later. The rest of the day was spent scouting out the best tables and potential deals for tomorrow and waiting for the rest of the dealers to set up. Met up with Al, Sal and Kent after the restaraunt they were in closed during our trip to find it. It was excellent navigation with questionable directions that turned a ten minute trip into about an hour. "Only a mile away" has different meanings depending on where you live I guess. THURSDAY: Opening Day for the Nationals. Carpooled over to the IX Center with Kent, Sal, and Steve. Regular parking rates were $7 and adding the $12 admission to that, it's a wonder anyone showed up at all. The place was mobbed however. I grabbed a big deal right away that I had scouted out the night before on 1952 Topps semi-highs (about 40 of the 60 in the run plus a Minoso) for 5% book and grabbed another low #'d '52 Topps lot (all black backed Dodgers and Yanks including Rizzuto and Snider). I later split this lot up three ways between Kent, Spike and Mike Rich. Sal appeared shortly afterward and handed me the envelope he brought for me. It was originally empty after going through his dupes box, but he made it his mission to fill it at the show - and he did by finishing off the 1969 Topps set! I spent much of the day picking off 1964 commons and searching for Post Cereal cards without a lot of success other than commons. Met up with Spike at the hotel after the show and became really annoyed after finding out he had to wait in the lobby for and hour and a half because the desk clerk didn't read a note I had left about leaving him a key to the room. We then proceeded en masse to the Applebee's (which I swore was on the same road as the hotel, but wasn't). The extra long trip made the food taste that much better. I wasn't that hungry when we left anyway When we got back from the restaraunt, I headed over to play UV Football poker with Spike in tow. I spotted him half my original ante (two 72 highs and a couple inserts) and he proceeded to clean up. He paid me back the $50 in chips, plus bought back $150+ in cards (including all of the vintage stuff) at the end of the night. I didn't fare as well and ended up with just three chips and a few more UV inserts in the bank, but there was always tomorrow to redeem myself. FRIDAY: Woke up early and headed to IHOP with Spike, then met up with Steve, Sal, and Kent for the ride to the show. Can't remember exactly what I spent all my money on, but I'm guessing it included a couple T205's I needed (Karger and Sweeney) plus a few more with Polar Bear backs (including Cicotte). Most of the gang went to the ballgame afterwards, but I opted to return to the poker table, where I turned things around and bought back some of the cards I had lost the night before, including a 1957 Dick Lane - a card I didn't know I would need until a few hours later. SATURDAY: Finished off a quick breakfast and headed to the show. Today's big purchase was the starter lot of 1957 Topps football. Almost a hundred different in decent shape including a couple stars (in not so decent shape). Spent the rest of the show looking to fill out the set and left needing only about a dozen cards. I participated in two of the "Box Wars" at the Donruss/Playoff booth. In the event, everyone buys a box of the same product and rips open the packs looking for a card with a particular characteristic (in this case it was the lowest number on an insert card). I pulled one numbered 02/75 and tied someone who pulled a 02/100. I won the tie breaker and scored a Jerry Rice one of one insert. I was offered $275 for it on the spot, but was told it was worth at least twice that, so I'll probably put it up on eBay and recoup all of the money I spent on UV wax (and have some left over to buy real cards). Headed over to the swap, which was moved from the slightly bigger room the Days Inn originally showed me on the first floor to an oversized closet on the third floor. Pizza and soda was eventually ordered and delivered and I had a good time checking out boxes for more 1964 hits. I had a hard time giving out cards though. I went home with almost all of the 53 Topps cards I picked up at the show. Look for those and more on the waiver wire eventually. SUNDAY: Last day of the show, although quite a few dealers (and collectors) had apparently had their fill and decided not to show up - or left early. I went in on a Red Man lot with Mike Rich that started a new set or two for me... wantlist to be posted soon. Worked the 57 football list down to just 4 (Morrall, Starr, Hornung and Unitas rookies) plus the checklist... I'll save those for a while down the road, since I couldn't find any (except Morrall) priced under triple digits at the show. Found a 57 FB Willard Sherman error for under $2 which I have since deemed to be altered, but it looks like the real McCoy even under close inspection. The best deal of the show was had at Roger Neufeldt's table - a VGish Frank Gifford RC that didn't have a price on it. I handed it to Roger and asked how much it was, figuring it to be at least $15 or $20. He quietly looked over the card, placed a price sticker on the toploader, wrote the number three on it and handed it back to me. I actually felt guilty about paying 3% for it. I discovered a table with several of the short printed Post cereal cards including a 61 Shaw, 62 Hodges and Marichal, plus a couple 63 toughies for less than I have seen them on eBay. I ended things up by crossing off a few hoops cards from my list. All in all it was a very productive show. The best part of course was getting to meet up with the gang and putting names to faces for a few more people including John McLaughlin, Chris Stufflestreet, Scott Earle, Tom Housley, and John Leroux. I hope to see you all in Chicago next year. TAYL, Ken M ================= To: "Ramblings" Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 19:37:48 -0400 From: "Steve Rittenberg" Subject: It's official! Hope it’s not too long: Drove overnight Wednesday and arrived at the Football HOF at 8:30 AM Thursday morning. Heard Saint Al was also going to be visiting the Hall but we must have just missed each other there. We left a little after 1:00 and I heard he arrived around 12:30 but we never saw each other. Drove up to Cleveland to our hotel but couldn’t check in yet so went shopping at the Great Northern Mall. Spent $40 at the Indian Team store and received two vouchers for any Indian’s game, pretty good deal!. Checked into the hotel and did the family dinner at Applebee’s about an hour or so before the rest of the gang went there. Followed Doug and Jim to the show. It was kids day so the kids (Brendan 10, Connor 8, and Katie 7) got in free and received a bunch of freebies so they were happy. Saw Joe Isaac behind us in line and once inside met Peter Mead for the 1st time. Was hoping to be able to follow the kids around for a while to make sure they didn’t spend all of their money in the first 30 minutes but while I was talking to Peter they took off with my wife and I didn’t see them for a while. My wife says they did well with their money. Connor got a deal that made Rittenberg a little jealous by picking up 100 different Pedro Martinez cards for $10. Connor did let Steve go through and pick out about 10 or so he needed and Steve gave Connor a binder with some plastic sheets. I was trying to save my money for Saturday so I didn’t pick up too much stuff on Friday. Managed to track down my family for lunch and they showed me what they got. Was going to walk around with them again but I ran into another OBCer and talked for about a minute and the kids and wife took off again not to be seen until departure time. Ran into close to 20 OBCer’s during the course of the day including a few I met for the first time. Left the show at 6:00, grabbed some dinner and headed to the Indians game. Was supposed to meet up with Bill Malson to give him his ticket. He waited by the Will Call window and I went to the Bob Feller statue. I didn’t see him at the statue so I asked someone how to get to Will Call and he pointed me in a clockwise direction which took me ¾ of the way around the stadium. Finally got to Will Call and found out Bill was there about 10 minutes ago. Went back to the statue and we finally hooked up. Unfortunately we missed the replica stadium giveaway and the top of the first inning. Got to see a good game with Ben Broussard going from goat to hero. Earlier in the game he was on second and tried to go to third on a ground ball to short and got thrown out. He made up for it with a 11th inning walk off homer. It was an enjoyable game spent with good company. There were 27 OBC members and family. Two extra tickets went to Kurt Turdot and his friend. John Leroux was suppose to be there as well but his son’s baseball game was rescheduled so he couldn’t make it. My wife and I went to the souvenir shop and proceeded to purchase $40 more dollars of stuff and got two more vouchers. The plan was for me to go to the show by myself and the wife and kids go to a local water park. Well, the kids had such a good time at the ball game Friday they wanted to go again so they used the 4 vouchers and cashed them in for the 1:00 game. Matt Stairs became Connor’s favorite Royal as he tossed a ball in Connor’s direction after warming up. Unfortunately the kid behind them reached over the seat and grabbed it. They got to see another Tribe victory. I caught a ride to the show with Jim and Doug. Did some major damage to the ’54 and ’56 sets and some football sets I’m working on. Also picked up some ’51 and ’52 Bowman starter sets. Caught up with the wife and kids at the hotel and headed over to the swap session. They went swimming while I went swapping. Picked up quite a few cards (especially from Steve). Details will be in another email. All in all it was another great National and having the family share it with me made it even more enjoyable. I can see Connor developing the same excitement about cards that I had as an 8 year old. It was a pleasure seeing some old friends (Doug, Jim, Ken, Steve, Joe, Spike, Mike, Ron, Tim, Kent, Bill) and meeting some new ones (Peter Mead, Chris Stufflestreet, Larry Gersbach, Kev Martens, Al Cummings, John McLaughlin, Scott Earle, Sal Domino, Greg Conway, Mark Talbot, and John Leroux). I probably won’t make Chicago in 2005 but I’m already looking forward to Atlantic City in 2006. Don’t just search. Find. All, Pretty much everything covered as to The National this year. A great time at the show, ballgame and swap was had. Unfornately I did not get through anybody's stuff at the swap. For some reason I had blurry vision that night. Must be from all the cards I looked at the show :>). Likewise it was great to see OBCers that I had meet before and to have the pleasure to meet ones I had not met before (Scott Earle, Tom Housley, Joe Isaac, John Leroux, Bill Malson, John McLaughlin, Peter Mead, and Chris Stufflestreet). A short thanks out to the following: Doug Smith who found some Cardinal baseball oddball stuff like a very young Stan 'The Man' Musial on an exhibition card? , Carl Sawatski 62 Post Cereal card, and UV 2001 Fleer Enos Slaughter card. Mark Talbot who gave me three 52 Topps baseball cards #94, 198, and 281. Did anybody else besides me notice Mark's neat business card? and finally Steve Rittenberg who gave me two 53 Topps cards of which I forgot to notate. Also, I would like to thank Steve and Sal for helping me birddog the 57 Topps set that I completed at the National as well as the 53 Topps and 54 Topps which will soon be completed, too (In my dreams as there are some tough high $cards amongst them - Mantle, Mays, and Aaron). I must mention I'm sure you noticed my wantlist is dwindling down to the tough cards for my Topps/Bowman Cardinals & Dodgers run but St. Louis Cardinal as well as Brooklyn Dodger oddball stuff is welcome here. I also have a few Bowman as well as Philly football cards that I have not listed for my wantlist as I had put them on the backburner. Also if you come across Topps wrappers and boxes I do collect them, too. Looking forward to the 2005 National in Chicago next year.
