================= Date: Tue, 1 Jun 2004 07:22:27 -0700 (PDT) To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Chris Stufflestreet Subject: Take Us Out to the Ball Game Memorial Day gives us a lot to stop and think about (even for OBCers in Canada, as many of their own countrymen are buried in fields across Western Europe as well). Looking past the solemnity the holiday, there are some other great things about the dya. Here in Jacksonville, school has already let out for the summer and our local Jacksonville Suns (Dodgers' AA affiliate) ran a promotion for the kids. All kids who brought a report card were given a free ticket for their game against the Greenville Braves. In addition to that promotion, it was also Monday; anybody showing their cable bill got $5 off per seat. As a result, Ellen and I took our 5 year-old daughter Melissa -- a recent kindergarten graduate -- to the game and ended up spending $14 for three seats by the first base Melissa was excited to see the game. She really doesn't follow baseball but knows her Daddy loves it. She had been asking to see the Suns since we went to a Jaguar game last fall, so we finally had a chance to see one. She was ready to go, all dressed up with her Suns helmet (a 50 cent yard sale acquisition a few weeks ago) and a kid-sized Suns baseball glove. I pulled out the Manny Trillo-model glove I used as a Little Leaguer (which still fits...snugly) and went to the new ballpark, called The Baseball Grounds at The game started off well. In the first inning, the Suns' pitcher looked like Tom Seaver, who played for the Suns back in '66. He struck out two and didn't have a ball hit past the infield. In the second inning, the team looked more like a Pee Wee League squad. A hit batsman, two hits, two horrible infield errors and a quick 5-0 score for the Braves. By the time the Suns scored in the 6th, the Braves already had all the points they needed and won the game 9-5. A few observations: If you've never attended a baseball game with a 5 year-old girl, it's something of a nuisance. 5 year-olds (whether boy or girl) are famous for asking questions. A LOT of questions. I had to explain why "stealing" isn't a bad thing in baseball, how the players were trying to advance the baserunners, why the outfielders threw the ball to the shortstop when the runner they were trying to throw out was heading home, and whether the player on the scoreboard was a Sun or a Brave. Her answer to every explanation was another question: "why?" I don't know if she picked up a bunch of what I was saying, but I'm hoping repeated exposure will help. When a guy runs around dressed as a mascot, it can be fun. The Suns' mascot is a dog named Southpaw. He meandered through the stands and slapped paws with the fans, signed a few programs and even one girl's shoe. That's fun, but sending another guy out dressed as a pickle spear (like sponsor Peter Piper) might scare the hell out of some kids. Speaking of the pickle guy, reaching out and touching the costume and saying, "look honey, here's a pickle tickle you can get away with in public!" might get a big laugh from your wife, but it doesn't make the guy inside the costume want to hand you a coupon for a free pickle at the concession stand. Just a word of advice there. The 7th inning stretch is a weird thing if you don't know it's coming. Melissa was curious to know why all of a sudden everybody stood up and sang "God Bless America," but really didn't understand why I started singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" after that. In fact, she gave me that look that most parents eventually recoginze...the "Daddy, you're going to embarrass me out in public" look. To be fair, anybody who's heard me sing out loud would probably give me the same look, but I digress... The first foul ball was caught cleanly by the chest of a teenaged boy who was looking for his seat in the first inning (there was a collective "ouch" by the audience). I saw one guy leap over three rows of seats and risk great bodily harm when a foul ball was hit his way, and he didn't even come up with it. Another guy caught a foul ball with his bare hand after switching his beer to the other hand. When you have a young child, you can get a big laugh by just saying, "why would anybody want a foam #1 finger? It's way too big to pick your nose with." My wife doesn't really appreciate the humor as much as my daughter does. Then again, Melissa also wanted me to trip one of the vendors in the aisle so she could get a souvenir. They sell packs of cards at the gift shop. The thing I found amusing was that they still had unopened packs of 1989 Pro Set Football, '90 Topps Football and '92 Topps Stadium Club Series 2 for $1 each (and I still think they're too much). Gift shop workers are fun. Melissa was looking at a small souvenir bat with the Suns logo on it, and the lady at the counter asked if she wanted one. As the lady reached to get one, I said, "why would you want that? You're just going to hit the dog with it." The lady quickly placed the bat back. Want a souvenir cup? Don't spend $5 at the concession stand, just wait until the game's over and you can have as many as you want as you make your way out. I actually learned this one at Jaguar games. Before leaving, all children aged 4-14 were invited to come onto the field and run around the bases. Melissa was happy to do that, so we went down to the field. As the kids started running, I commented that not all of them were bothering to touch the bases. Melissa must have heard that, because she made a point to toch every base on her way around. The funny thing is, she had fun but didn't realize that her Daddy was jealous...I'd have given anything to run those bases The most encouraging thing Melissa said was on our way to the exits: "We're coming back tomorrow?" Actually, it was more of a statement than a question. Maybe I'll get lucky and she'll develop a love for baseball Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. Just got home about an hour ago and put something in my safe that I neverthought I would own... The story goes something like this... In Las Vegas for the annual OBC get together. It is Saturday morning and the majority of the guys are golfing. I decide to go to the mall (friend Heather helps this idea along) since there is a card show there. Arrive at the mall and find one table with anything like vintage cards and buy a coupleof '62 Post and a '63 Jello for $5. Decent cards and a decent buy. I am getting frustrated when I notice the mall has two wings, and East and West. Call Heather to tell her I am heading to the East wing, she tells me that isfine since she is spending her money at Macys (oh yeah, first day in Vegas, Heather drops 75 cents in a machine at the Sahara and hits a $1000 jackpot--she was very happy to have money to spend at the mall!). East wing yeilds a few more tables with vintage. Buy a pile of cards from a dealer incl. a'63 Exhibit Stat back Nelson Fox, 2 '71 Supers, 2 '55 Redman without tabs incl. Rizzuto, and two '55 Redmans with tabs incl. Spahn. Total price $25. I was now happy since I thought this was a great price....but it was not the deal of the century... As I approached the last table with anything vintage there was an older gentleman (late 70s early 80s) with a binder. In the binder I spied some older cards but could not tell what they were. He kept trying to get the attention of the dealer but the dealer kept talking to a friend and shuffling cards. He finally looked at the binder and gave the guy his business card. While waiting for the dealer to finally notice him, he turned and introduced himself to me as Earl. I asked him if I could look at the binder if the dealer was not interested. He said fine. I waited off to the side and when Earl walked up and handed me the binder I was kind of disappointed when the first cards I saw was a set of Nolan Ryan Pepsi cards from Donruss. Was not disappointed when he turned to the back and showed me some Playballs from 1941. Yes, 1941 Playballs. Wait, all of them!! A WHOLE SET OF '41 PLAYBALLS. Williams and Dimaggio (all three incl!) Hubbell, Ott, Danning, Gomez, etc. I had never held a set of Playballs. Nice ones too...Most vg-vg+, a few that were good, a few that were ex. None poor-fair! Nice set. He tells me how hecollected as a kid and traded four Pirates (he is from Pitt.) for the lastcard he needed, the Bobby Doerrer. He said make an offer. I told him I could only take out $300 from my ATM in any one day. He said fine. I said $300? They are worth more. He said that I was obviously a collector who knew his stuff and that he would rather me have them than a dealer. He also laughed and said that he was getting a bargain since he probably paid a total of $2 for the whole set in 1941!! We walked to the ATM, handed him $300 and walked away with a 1941 PLAYBALL SET. Did not sleep the rest of the weekend. I borrowed a Beckett just to check and realized that the set books for $10000 (ten-thousand)!! in Nrmt, $7000 in vg 3% of book for a pre-war set. I amin Heather won a $1000 but I found a $6700 bargain. I have attached a post of the set....ask the Vegas guys about holding a 1941 Playball set at lunch. Unbelievable!!! It was the second attempt at this show for me, given that last time (2002) produced no better than one or two tables with vintage stuff on it. The show's gotten better--now there were FOUR tables with vintage stuff. (For $10 admission, not a great return.) Most were familiar local dealers, so you'd be better served getting their business cards or hitting a local low-admission show instead. Four tables still meant spending opportunities--I picked up a handful of 57 upgrades and one hit (Richardson RC) for 10% HB, then grabbed OBC-grade stuff for the dupes box at a couple of other tables. Final table produced three 1949 Bowmans and two hits to the #5 collection, 1977 OPC (Jones/Palmer LL) and 1977 Topps cloth sticker (Blyleven). The "highlight" of Tri-Star shows is the large number of autograph guests. This time, Stan Musial, Lou Brock, and Red Schoendienst were the headliners. Lou wears the years well, looking sharp in a tan suit and waving to the admission line on arrival. Red and Stan are getting, well, old. I'll probably carry the image of Stan getting out of the shuttle and hiking his pants up to his chest longer than I want to. The "free" vintage autograph for the show was Mark Fidrych, but he was there on Friday, so we missed him. Show grade: G/VG. Although they upgraded from poor, admission is still too expensive and vintage stuff is only 10-15% of the show. Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! My computer is six years old, they won't have anything to do with me, I'm on my own. Another call to AOL, they suggest I take it in and have it checked out at a computer fix-it place. Holiday weekend, everything is closed till Tuesday the 2nd. Tuesday I bring it in, explain the problem. Fix-it guy says it will be one to three days they'll have her fixed. This is Tuesday the 8th, fix-it guy says it'll be ready tonight or tomorrow morning. Fortunately, I could borrow my daughter's laptop so I could keep up with email. That brings me to the thanks part of this week's episode. From the House of Maxwell comes a card that I have been actively pursuing but has, until now, eluded my every effort. Eek sends a '57 Topps Kaline card which, according to the inclosed documentation, was nibbled upon by a gerbil. I guess you could say that gerbil had good taste. I have tried to post thanks regularly and also to show thanks by sending out packages to as many as I could who are kind enough to send me stuff. I also have tried to show the OBC spirit by RAOK packages and making cards available through the OBC chats. Although my efforts pale in comparison to a number in the group, who send out mass mailings, I sent out over 25 packages a short wile ago. I do not keep track of what I send, but I did write down who I sent to this time. I have kept track of posted thanks and only the "thankful" 13 posted thanks. I am NOT looking for return fire, nor some overwhelming show of appreciation (some of these packages were SCP of Tiptonesque cards), but I would like to know the packages got to their intended destination. Please post thanks. As Lynn pointed out, and I now understand much better, it is the least someone can do for someone who has taken the time and expense to look at your lists, find some card(s) for you and mailed them out. I am not upset, just disappointed. AS an added note at why this might be important to the sender of the package. In the OBC theory of "what goes around, comes around", I periodically try and find things for people who I see thanks posted to frequently. Not everyone can return fire to those who send to them. However, if I see someone is active in sending out packages, I take an extra effort to check their lists to see if I can send to them. If recipients to do not post thanks for these others, I (and IMHO others) do not know who are most "worthy". Mentoring seems to me vaguely defined (even as I'm a mentor), but that's not a problem, it just makes it more flexible. People will need different resources. When I first joined, the nature of the group wasn't yet apparent. It took a couple of years to understand the give-and-take, personalities, and life of the group. OBC does a good job of welcoming people, especially people (like me) who come in with mostly 70s cards and a Beckett-and-card-shop knowledge of what's out there. I was overwhelmed with how much stuff arrived and how quickly. It was exciting--and, for me, easy to take for granted! Hopefully today's newer members get the OBC excitement without seeing it as a gratis card supply. It's too bad that this had to be aired out in front of the whole group, butI suppose if we didn't know about it, things like this wouldn't get resolved... or would just keep happening. Anyway, before I add my two cents in on this,I will admit that the only thing I had against "Squirrel" to this point is that he sometimes doesn't combine posts. Lessening the effect of this 'pet peeve' is the fact that I get my Thanks and Rambling in digest form. Sometimes there's two or three messages in a row from the same person (not just Scott). However, this is such a minor issue with me that I don't even bother to e-mail anyone privately and tip them off about it... but now I guess everyone knows As far as the e-mail that Scott recieved is concerned, I hope that future e-mails of this nature would be more of the 'constructive criticism' variety and not the scolding, "what'd you do that for?" tone that this e-mail seemsto take. In order for the mentoring system to work, this type of e-mail should be shared with the recipient's mentor instead of sharing it with the whole group (especially now that we're in group therapy mode on this subject now - hopefully we won't have to do it again). The mentor and the new OBC member can together to fix things... if not, then there's always the OBCAC or the group therapy thing just in case. Now onto the questions... > how come many (most? all?) messages we get from you are marked "high > priority"? I don't know how to set the priority level on my outgoing messages. Otherwise, I'd set it to "wicked super duper megapriority, the most important thing you' ll read today" and still let you decide if you want to even bother. Some of you can't even read my messages ...and some of you are probably napping now. I'm sure there's plenty of better things to do than reading my messages... like cleaning the lint screen in the dryer, but I can accept that. > You can tell me if its a stupid question but how can you be "pretty close" > to finishing your 1968 Game card set if you have 7 out of the 33 cards? That might depend on which 7 cards you have or what you're comparing it to.I might be 26 cards away from completing the set, but if I'm 426 cards away from completing every other set on my list, then I'd guess I'm pretty closeon the small set. I guess that's like saying I live pretty close to California... compared to how close I live to Pluto. I might also already have Mantle, Mays, Clemente, Rose, Aaron, Brooks and Yaz for the set and need 26 lesser names.I guess it's all relative. > It seems I have =E2stepped on some toes=E2=99 lately. The subject line may seem like a line used in a bad '60s spy kick, but it refers to yet another OBC personal meeting... MATT HEILENMAN is visiting my adopted home state, taking a week to visit the world's largest "Mickey Mouse" operation with his family. We set up a time to meet up, since Orlando is a 2-hr. drive from my house. Before starting the rambling, I need to sidetrack for a moment...realizing that some OBC members haven't spent a lot of time in Florida, I feel I must explain something you don't see in the vacation brochures. While the state is well-known as the "Sunshine State," it also gets a LOT of rain. Orlando is also the U.S. Lightning capital. Thanks to the effects of having an ocean, a gulf and thousands of lakes, swamps and rivers affecting our weather patterns...the our climate is prime for the occasional heavy downpour. And Orlando -- located in the direct center of the peninsula -- is something of a dumping gound for heavy rain and lightning. At certain times of the year, the rains come at about the same time every day, and Matt's vacation is happening in one of those periods. Hopefully, it'll be drier before he leaves. It was already raining when I stopped by Matt's suite at the Old Key West resort in Disney World. We (my wife, daughter and myself) stopped in and started trying to figure out if we should run off somewhere. We hadn't eaten, but Matt had. His family was spending the evening checking out the Magic Kingdom. My wife wanted to eat, so a deal was struck: she and Melissa went to Downtown Disney for dinner and Matt and I stayed at the resort to talk. Perfect scenario for me! Due to the rain, I had to make a quick run to bring up my dupes box. Once inside, Matt and I sat on the patio and the swapping and talking was quickly underway. Just like the other times I've met fellow OBCers, it seemed like we'd known each other for a while, even though we were meeting in person for the first time. We talked about baseball, Star Wars, cards, the Phils and their new park, OBC, eBay and family for three hours. We also got to whittle down some wantlists. Matt brought along 68 hits from my wantlists from 1954-'77. Included in the stack were cool greys of Boog and Tony C., a black beauty of Rod Carew and a '77 Jim Palmer. Thirteen '73s were there as well and many of them went in the sparsely-populated pages in the back of the binder. Matt pulled out his volume of wantlists (many of which do not appear on his website list) and managed to find a number of cards from my dupes box to add to his own There was another gift Matt brought along...two autographed 8-by-10s of former Steelers! Neither were stars (70's offensive backfielder Reggie Harrison and "Bull" Bonelli of the 1940s), but they're great items for this longtime Steeler fan. They'll be given a spot of honor in my collection. Finally, a little after 10, Matt's family came in and my wife showed up to collect her husband. Matt and I said our goodbyes and I got to unload a bunch of UV Star Wars stuff on him. Anybody else interested in getting some of those, let Matt know because he'll have a stack of dupes from that. Matt was one of the guys expecting to meet up with me at Ft. Washington when I went there a few months ago, but as it turned out I didn't get to meet up with anybody there except Steve R. Hopefully the National will allow me to meet up with a few more OBCers. Thanks for the great hits to my collection, Matt! See how many sets of cards you cansqueeze into a closet on the 35th floor and see what happens when water leaks into the closet. The answer is surprisingly not too bad. Just before leaving for a 5 day vacation to San Francisco (Amazing Adventures Card Shop in SF is a good find), I noticed that water was dripping into a closet containing 51 sets of my baseball cards. The neighbor above me on the 36th floor had a malfunctioning air conditioning unit that leaked into our unit with water going down the walls, across the carpeting and then wicking up into the cardboard boxes full of cards on the floor. My first reaction (after Oh nuts!) was: at least these were all sets from 1980 to 1992 to which I have modest sentimental attachment. My second thought was that the damage would be considerable with most boxes showing signs of water damage. The water leak got fixed, I opened the boxes, removed some of the cards and we left for 5 days. Upon returning I was surprised to find that while about 40 of the 51 boxes had water damage, only 5 sets had any cards that were damaged and only one set had more than a few cards goofed up. The water went into the boxes but not necessarily the cards. The 1988 Topps proved to be the poorest performers under this particular water test which was probably a function of havinga cheesy box rather than the cards themselves. Jefferson Burdick said you can stick a card in water, remove any paste from the back, press the card down and it will come out OK. The cards get messed up when they dry if not pressed down. More recent cards though may not do very well on this test. Unfortunately some of the factory set boxes that were damaged are also collectibles themselves and will be hard to replace. The moral is to put any boxes on at least the 37th floor (plastic underneath them wouldn't hurt) and don't get overly attached to any of this stuff. It's just cardboard. (Excluding my 1933 Goudeys, 1952 and 1953 Topps which are sacred relics.) weekly Wednesday show.  There is usually only 1 or 2 dealers there
that I even botehr to look at there items.  The main dealer is Mark
Talbot's fav; Harold.  Unfortunately, since I went to a funeral on
Wednesday, and had my checklists in the car (just in case of course),
I went to the show for 45 minutes +/-.  Of course I saw harold and
bought a bunch of stuff I do not need.  Included were autographed BBs
(I do not really collect autographs, but these came in ball holders
and were only $2 ea.  figured ballholders were worth that).
Additionally, I bought about 600 cards, all sports from 1970-1982
approximately.  Included were 30 1972 BB semi-highs, a few 73 BB
highs, etc.  A few cards were upgrades and I think I have finally
decided to add a duplicate 73 BB set to my wantlist, as I only need
about 90 high numbers.  Actually picked up a couple of hits to my
Bowman lists from Harold as well.  Also started a UV set of 1999
Fleer Sports Illustrated Covers.  Would someone please explain why I
bought this box.
I read about the upcoming Sportsfest show in Chicago.  Is anyone
planning on attending?  Anyone have room to house a pushy OBCer from
Detroit?  Sounds like it could be a nice warm-up for the National.
A year or so ago, Lynn Miller sent out a ramble reminding folks to
post thanks on a timely basis.  I never thought much about it (sorry
Lynn).  I have tried to post thanks regularly and also to show thanks
by sending out packages to as many as I could who are kind enough to
send me stuff.  I also have tried to show the OBC spirit by RAOK
packages and making cards available through the OBC chats.  Although
my efforts pale in comparison to a number in the group, who send out
mass mailings, I sent out over 25 packages a short wile ago.  I do
not keep track of what I send, but I did write down who I sent to
this time.  I have kept track of posted thanks and only
the "thankful" 13 posted thanks.  I am NOT looking for return fire,
nor some overwhelming show of appreciation (some of these packages
were SCP of Tiptonesque cards), but I would like to know the packages
got to their intended destination.  Please post thanks.  As Lynn
pointed out, and I now understand much better, it is the least
someone can do for someone who has taken the time and expense to look
at your lists, find some card(s) for you and mailed them out.  I am
not upset, just disappointed.  AS an added note at why this might be
important to the sender of the package.  In the OBC theory of "what
goes around, comes around", I periodically try and find things for
people who I see thanks posted to frequently.  Not everyone can
return fire to those who send to them.  However, if I see someone is
active in sending out packages, I take an extra effort to check their
lists to see if I can send to them.  If recipients to do not post
thanks for these others, I (and IMHO others) do not know who are
most "worthy".

I have really been enjoying watching (TV) inter-league play, and tonight was no exception. The Mariners hooked up with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and when I turned the TV on I was stunned by the beauty of the Pirates uniforms. The black and gold is exceptional, and the Pirates=92 logo on the arm is cool, though I would rather see the late 50s early 60s logo instead. The downtown skyline with the yellow bridge in front of the buildings is superb. Would love to hear from OBCers who have been to this park, =91cause it definitelyis on my list of go-to-ballparks now. Game time was 1:05, so we piled in Jim's car and made it there just in time, nabbing some free parking on a side street. $2 picked up a program and scorecard, $1 of that going to help fight Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). Gill Stadium is home to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, a AA team for the Blue Jays. (http://nhfishercats.com/gill-stadium/history-of-gill.asp). The history page shows its original condition, which was changed somewhat for the current season, adding that new soft (but fake) turf you see in some football stadiums. There are picnic areas along the first and third base lines, occupying some of the otherwise massive foul areas. A $21 picnic area seat also gets you all-you-can-eat BBQ, according to the program. The game was officially "sold out," so we picked up $3 standing room only tickets. First time I've had a SRO ticket, which turned out to be "sit anywhere because the 'sold out' stadium's half-full." Most of the game, we sat along the third base line. There are odd corner-shaped power alleys, probably because of the original football field layout--it's a definite pitcher's park. Manchester gets a new stadium next year, but this a good place to play in the meantime. The game was relatively uneventful, with the Cats scratching out three runs over the course of eight innings. There were fun between-innings promotions, including padded-suit Sumo wrestling and father-and-son vegetable tossing. No dominant stars-in-the-making, but we did see a knuckle-scratching sidearm reliever for the Cats and the visiting Trenton Thunder attempt, and fail, a double steal. We left after the top of the 8th, Cats up 3-0. Serves us right--a Trenton player hit a two-out, ninth inning, three-run homer to tie it before the Cats won it on an error in the tenth. Doh! Fortunately, the earlier exit gave us more time on the golf course, a nicely walkable 9-holer in nearby Derry, NH. We each dropped $20 for the twilight special and played with a local named Gary who was amused at my nickname (Spike) and asked us a few card-related questions. He was another 60s kid whose mother threw all his cards, a larger-than-average collection thanks to his superior flipping ability. Sorry Gary! Jim played a consistent 14 holes while Ken and I worked to keep Pinnacle and Titleist in business by finding lots of water. We finished strong on the last few, capping an all-around excellent day. Before I forget, Ken passed along three more 1978 Topps, knocking the list down to "very few." Great time guys, we'll have to do it again. Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Not a problem, I even managed to get a sunburn sitting in the shade. I believe there was only one ambulance call the whole time, and it was NOT for me. (There is a volunteer Fire Dept. and Ambulance on Island, approximately 500 yards away from our cabin.very handy.) For a long time, I had been wondering about the deer that keep hanging around. There are lots of them, almost tame, but in the 20 years or so that we have been going there, I had never seen a buck. I always wondered how more deer kept happening, considering these circumstances. This trip, a buck was actually hanging around and I saw him several times. He also saw me, and he had a very strange look on his face. I was up there alone, so I didn't really know exactly what he had in mind, but he did cause me to retreat into the cabin a couple of times. I'd like to think that he simply considered me a rival to the does that hang around, but those antlers looked a bit pointy, so I stayed clear. He definitely had an attitude problem, and is in dire need of an anger management On another note, I started my new part-time job today. I said when I retired that I was going to take a year and do exactly what I wanted to do, and not obey anyone at all.except for Herself of course. Any of you that have notebook computers might want to listen up here for a moment. I'm working for a software company that markets anti-theft software. It also works on desktops, but those are a lot less likely to get stolen than a notebook. Anyways, they put software on your hard drive that is extremely hard to detect. When you hook up to the Internet, it secretly sends a signal back to company HQ giving its' IP address or the phone # it is dialing from. They ignore that signal until you report the theft/loss of your computer, then it is flagged, and the next time your now missing computer is hooked up to the 'net, it starts sending signals giving it's new address. Kinda cool. My job is to take the new location of the computer, and put together a package for the police (basically anywhere in North America) to go get a warrant and recover the computer. Toughest part will be getting the lazy ones off their backsides to go do it, and there are lots of lazy ones around. Trust me. If anyone is interested in this program, it costs $49/year, cheaper with a 3 year contract. I am not getting a kickback here if you buy the program, just so you know. They also give a guarantee that if they don't get it back within 60 days, you get a refund. (Or something like that.) I have been going through a lot of past files, and the majority of stolen laptops disappear either from schools or offices, or from a private vehicle, including the trunk, not just the ones sitting visible on the seat. If anyone is interested, go to www.absolute.com for End of today's infomercial..I have gone from Detective to "Recovery Officer." As long as they pay me, they can call me anything they want. ================= To: "Steve Rittenberg" , Date: Wed, 23 Jun 2004 23:18:00 -0400 From: "Sean McGowan" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] ** I Need Some OBC advice about possibly liquidating my collection. If you sell the whole pile at once, you won't get near what it is "worth", that won't help you out. If you take the time to sell it in little parts, you probably make that much working a part time job. Maybe if there are a few select "biggies" that you actually bought, you could re-sell them and pay for some books, but I think liquidation is not the way to go. Mid grade cards just do not demand a premium, so our collections (most of us) are just not worth that much, unless you sell them one card at a time (see above). Anyway, I discoverd the words "gum stain" somewhere instantly felt certain that the Aaron in my cello pack was next to the gum!It out not to be, but I took the gum out anyway. Curiosity got the best of me... the gum instantly dissolved into a disgusting sand-like podwer as soon as it hit my It was Awful! maybe between 1974 and 1981 they got better at making the gum! ----- Original Message ----- From: directorth@aol.com To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, June 26, 2004 10:49 AM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Scientific Experiment Just a short ramble here, which involves a pack of 1981 Fleer All-Star Game Stickers & my 14 year old daughter. Recently, Steve Rittenberg, Mike Rich & I have been trying to figure out what makes up a master set of the 1981 Fleer All-Star Game cards (the ones with the sticker backs). Well, last year I bought a bunch of unopened packsfrom evilBay, busted most open, & came up with what I believe might be a full set. However, after the recent go-around with Steve & Mike, I wasn't sure - so I opened the last three unopened packs I had to see if there were any in there I didn't have (nope.) As I was opening them, my 14 year old walked past & took some interest; I told her I was opening packs almost 9 years older than her. Of course, the cement-like gum slabs were still in the pack; I asked her if she wanted to try some gum older than she was - of course, she said yes. Suffice to say, I can report that the preservatives in thegum are A+, as Kati is still walking around a week later, no worse off than before. Way to go Fleer! Yahoo! Groups Sponsor Yahoo! Some individually, some connected . The biggest stip was of 5 stamps. many were 2 or 3 stamp connections. I know there are 240 different stamps in the set, although they came in 24 strips of 12 for a total of 288 stamps if done in panels. Does anyone have an alphabetical list of the 240 different and which ones were double printed? I also now have some dupes available for those with a wantlist. I figure I have over 1/2 the set now. I also am getting closer on the 1961 & 1962 stamps, but hardly have any 1974 stamps. Check my article in the OBC online Library for a checklist for the 69 stamps, including DP's. FYI, An eBay seller has complete sets of the 74 stamps in 12 stamp complete panels for sale at $50 right now, which is a steal. I just bought a set of them last week from him and got them three days later. ================= Date: Sat, 26 Jun 2004 17:39:11 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: dsh46@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Digest Number 1153 In a message dated 6/26/2004 10:09:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com writes: 1963 Topps Stick-ons appear to come with the application instructions on back or as balnk backs. I would like to complete the set each way. OK this may not be as obnoxious as trying to complete multiple sets of T-206s with the different backs, but for obscurity this has to rank up there. Most of the ones I have come WITH the instrucitons on back. Only need Clemente Davis Farrell Kaline Musial & Frank Robinson with instructions on back. I do not have that many WITHOUT the instructions. I recently picked up a few dupes for the set and would love to swap my dupes WITH instructions for the same players WITHOUT instructions for those that could care less You may want to reconsider-the non-instruction backs are about 15 times scarcer than the normal ones. I have three blanks in my full set and do not recall seeing many at all when I was completing same. ================= Date: Sun, 27 Jun 2004 03:40:59 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "mikesportsfan" Subject: Another get together with a FOOT member For the 2nd Saturday nite in a row, I go together with a FOOT member to see a professional ballgame. Last week was the Mud Hens in Toledo, where the Mud Hens won on a walk off Home Run in the 13 th inning. Tonite the Tigers won on a walk off Home Run in the 9th by Eric Munson into the centerfield fountain area. A tremendous blast by a slumping player. Ron Perry accompanied me this time. I was able to get my firms tickets in row 22 almost directly behind home plate. We are going again tomorrow with Ron's tickets in teh upper deck left field area ($5 tickets). Although we were not able to get any autographs tonite, as they cut off the line with us about 15 people to go before us. The highlite of the nite for me is that for the first time in 36 years of going to ballgames I caught a ball. A ricochet off the facing of the upper deck on the fly. There were tons of foul balls and at least 3 fans appeared to get injured on foul balls. Hanging out with an OBCer, getting a ball and a walk off home run. Also we were eating some mmore of Sassy's chocolate chip cookies. A Great nite. I had said it was a monsterous blast. Today's papers mentioned it was the farthest ball hit at Comerica Park. Last nite we sat in my firm's seats, which is row 22 right behind home plate. We are 5 or 6 seats off of a direct line between teh plate, mound and second. I also commented how I go tmy first ball at a game, by getting a foul ball. This weekend was a special weekend celebrating the Tigers 20th anniversary of winning the World Series in 1984. As part of it, Blue Cross/ Blue Shield (BCBS) sponsored an event this morning, twhere they had some retired players available for autographs, etc. Before they came out for autographs, someone from BCBS noticed teh yearbooks and cards Ron and I had with us. They came on over and interviewed us on camera. We were able to get autographs from Ernie Harwell, Tom Brookens, Darrell Evans & Dave Bergman. Football HOFer, Lem Barney, Former Pistons, Greg Kelser & Rick Mahorn as well. Martha Reeves and a Vandella as well. Got autographs, went to breakfast and went to the game. Today we had Ron's nose bleed tickets in the 3rd deck. Since it was early we went to my firms seats. We were able to stay there until my boss and his family showed up in the 3rd inning. We went to Ron's seats bu twere back my the end of teh 6th, as my boss's kids were acting up. What did we see fter last nite's rally and walk off monster balst? Another Tigers rally with a 2 out 2-2 coutn bases loaded walk off Grand Slam from Carlos Pena. 2 walk offs in 2 days. Autographs and a sunburn. Another great day!!! Guess that kills some of the high school jokesI got in chats ;) Also happy to report that my health is back on track and everything checks out. After overcoming that and the resulting time off from school and running, I look forward to resuming some OBC activity. I believe I have only managed to send out a half dozen OBC envelopes in the past 7 months, so any activity will be sure to surpass that. I am not sure whether or not I will be able to attend the National this year. For graduation my grandparents are taking my sister (16th birthday is at the end of July) and me to the Grand Canyon as a joint gift. We are leaving by train from NYC July 12, arriving in AZ the 14th, staying until the 20th, and returning the 22nd. That might be too close to manage a trip to Cleveland. We will see as I consult my family about managing the time. I leave for Seton Hall University some time around the third week of August. I will be reporting prior to the August 29 move in day so that I can begin training for their Division I Cross Country program. Definitely lookingforward to college. I am set up as an accounting major and also part of adual admission law program. Assuming I stay on board with the program, itwill take 7 years but will result in an undergraduate accounting degree and a Juris Doctorate. Exciting stuff. That's a short update on me.
