Lately I have been playing with the notion of how these cards were actually printed and how the print runs affected scarcity. I am now getting serious with this and need some help...big help. I am finding that certain backs are very difficult to find (in addition to Drum and Hindu) and that the factory designations might have a lot to do with the single print scarcities. What I need from T-205 collectors (meaning anyone with a T-205) is the to list the players and the ads (any ad) on the back including factory for Piedmont and Hassan, and factory and color for Sweet Cap. I know some of you are nearing completion of the set and some have completed it and I also know that you have other lives so there is no hurry in getting this to me. But any help is appreciated. David tells me that his health "could be better, could be worse" and, in true Kolenda fashion, he is going crazy at work. We all wish him well and j hope that we can see him soon. I haven't heard from Al yet. This, of course, does not surprise me. To all you who are coming to V04, if you happen to see Al on the way, you are most likely lost. We will have a few rookies this year, Glenn Codere and Larry Gershbach. Please wear something that looks good with red. And now for the BIG NEWS: At V03, Geno Wagner unleashed a drive on the 6th hole that rivals any home run hit today. As the granddaddy of all drives, and to honor Geno who is in reality stationed at Area 51 outside of Vegas but must tell us otherwise, the OBC golf Invitational executive committee has to have a long drive contest on the aforementioned 6th hole during the 10th first annual OBC golf classic. The winner of the long drive contest, after meeting eligibility requirements will receive the following valuable prize: (a ball similar to)THE VERY BALL HIT BY GENO WAGNER IN HIS HISTORIC LONG DRIVE. THE BALL WILL IS AUTOGRAPHED BY (me writing Geno's name) GENO WAGNER AND DATED (again by me) WITH THE HISTORIC DATE (or a date somewhere around the general time). As a side note, those who have previously played golf but are not playing this year due to (supposed) injuries will be required to bring such excuses for not playing to the excuse breakfast. Due to George Hay's fraudulent letter, anybody with a medical excuse must have their doctor attend the breakfast in person. And, although the doctor's appearance will not matter, he will be expected to pick up the check for the breakfast as he makes more money than the rest of us. Although it rained, it was uneventful and we made through customs in moments. Stumbled across an excellent place for dinner and had split a plate of pigsicles (ribs - pig ona stick for the unitiated). Those of us who make it to the Toronto show, know that we take over my sister's house (do not know how much longer that will last as she is getting married in 2 weeks and will probably sell the house). We got up early and found a bar open for breakfast. Total bill was $6.60 Canadian for Pancakes for me, and Eggs, toast, hash braons and coffee for Ron. Sure beats $40 in Atlantic City at last years National. Show did not open until 10:00 but we were in line around 9:15. It started raining but we were under an awning by the building so we did not melt. Carlos Alcazar and his buddy Wesley showed up and I escorted them to take cuts into line with us. None of us picked up lots of cards. I did get a stack of OPC hockey marked checklists cheap and Ron got some Tiptonesque hockey cards, including a Tallboy Gordie Howe real cheap. I did get 2 cards from one of Steve's fav dealers, Maurice, including the last 76-77 OPC hockey I needed for $.50 Canadian. Another set finished. I had 3 relatively decent size purchases. Canada post has a great deal where you buy an item of their's featuring a player(s) they have issued a stamp for and you can get a player a day autograph. I bought 5 items for myself and a couple fo friennds for $50 Canadian, and todays guest was Johnny Bower. Tomorrow I will buy 2 Brad Park litho's and get him on those, plus on the 3 "coffee" coasters that we bought today. Excellent deal. Mark Talbot is to blame on my biggest purchase of the day, a stack of 43 T-218s (Mark got me started on this multi-sport set). I need at least 21, and maybe more based on the back variations. Paid a little over $4 each for them, but completed my Avaiators and got 2 of the 3 Bowlers I needed. Still no billiards players. The buy of the day, was a stack of 6 1933 Canadian Goudey BB from a dealer I get lots of stuff from. All were in real decent shape and included (are you reading this Bama?) Waite Hoyt. I only had 2 previously, so this quadruples my have list. Had a fun purchase with a stack of Slurpee BB coins and ends up I need about a dozen of them. Ron turned over to me a Topps Hockey he got in one of his trash stacks. Turns out it is 1 of the last 5 cards I need to complete my 1960-61 Topps set. Only made through about 1/2 the show today, so tomorrow will be just as busy. Mike Rich We finished the day by going to dinner with Carlos and Wesley and Carlos' dad Bull. Bull and Ron were cracking each other up. There are a couple of pictures of the group that Carlos will post to the web. A decent first day, but not spectacular. Hopefully, a few more bargains tomorrow. ================= Date: Sat, 1 May 2004 23:05:09 EDT To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Celenox@aol.com Subject: DAY at FT wash Hello All, Well, I made a guest appearance at Ft Washington show today, and met up with Ken Morganti, Steve Rittenberg and Matt Heilman. Thanks! A baseball note from the weekend: touring the Somerville, MA, artist's Open Studios this weekend, I met an artist who was recently commisioned to create a painting of Jewish baseball stars for the Newton Jewish Community Center. Much of his studio was dedicated to the work going into this piece, which included several sketch studies, pictures of the players, and the canvas itself. (He's a big Sox fan himself.) The painting will show Koufax, Rosen, and Greenberg with Leopold Bloom, the (Jewish) protagonist of James Joyce's Ulysses. Leopold is holding a ball and they're placed somewhat like a conference on the mound. The painting should be finished later this year and I signed up to be notified on the opening date. I'll post a note when it happens and hopefully there will be an image online, it should be quite a piece. We talked about the players for a while and he mentioned Moe Berg. Moe was Jewish, but apparently didn't have to endure the kind of anti-Semitism the other three handled. Maybe it was his low profile (good for his later spy work, no doubt), but as significant as he was to the country, the artist decided not to include him in the painting because of its emphasis on Jewish observance and playing through adversity. There was an interesting quote about Flip in his studio. Apparently, a writer in the early 50s wrote a piece that included an affirmation of Flip's Catholicism! So I said sure. He brings them in today, and my eyes just pop. In a Tupperware container are literally hundreds of cards. Old stuff! 1954 Bowmans, 1962 Topps (including most of the high-number series), 1955 Bowmans, 1952 Topps, 1953 Bowman B&W and color. I was breaking into a cold sweat! Then I take a look, and he has a 1953 Pee Wee Reese Bowman color, in EX shape. I just about fainted. No 1952 Mantle or 1963 Rose, but there was a 1962 Jim Bouton RC and a 1954 Bowman Ralph Kiner. It was so much fun to go through. All I could say to my friend was, "well, if he doesn't want the cards back, let me know." No chance, the guy is going to love it. This is a set of pictures from the 1956 Cleveland Indians team (including Earl Averill "Jr"). I don't see this set cataloged in SCD, and it's not listed in Beckett either. I WANTED THIS SET. I lost a bid a couple of weeks ago when my internet service crashed before my snipe bid was placed. Because I really wanted these pictures, I decidedto place a bid far higher than I thought anyone would go. So before I left for work, I place the original bid at $87.50 (starting price was $24.99).Some idiot got on eBay at 8:11 a.m. and over a period of 7 minutes, placed 7 bids, inching his way up until he surpassed my original bid. P.O.ed, Icame home on my lunch hour to place a snipe bid with 10 seconds to go and did win the lot. The complete bidding history is detailed below. My guess is that if I handn't placed that original bid, this idiot would have bid at most $27.96 and I would have saved a ton of money on this lot. This has happened to me before. The worst case was 23 bids over a period ofabout half an hour driving the bid up from $80 to $220 (approximately). Iwon that one too, but it was an expensive lesson. I usually put my snipe bids in early (using special software for that purpose) and never check again until the auction is over. That way, I don't get"caught up" in the auction and overbid. The current lot was an exception because I have never seen these pictures before and may never see them again. I've been fortunate so far in that to the best of my knowledge I have neversniped an OBC'er. If it ever happens, I hope you understand. The real question hinges on what is more important -your getting a good deal or the seller getting fair open market value. Even though I do not sell, I am in favor of the latter, and wish that eBay would change its system to an adjusted end-time format so that the auction cannot close until at least one minute, maximum five minutes, have passed after the auction's original end time without getting a bid. This would in part make snipe-bidding useless. I guess my thinking applies the old golden rule -- if you were the seller of that lot, what price would you like to see? And, since at least two people put the bid up over $200, then that tells me that fair-market value may have been achieved in open, fair and retaliatory competition. This is a set of pictures from the 1956 Cleveland Indians team (includingEarl Averill "Jr"). I don't see this set cataloged in SCD, and it's not listed in Beckett either. I WANTED THIS SET. I lost a bid a couple of weeks ago when my internet service crashed before my snipe bid was placed. Because I really wanted these pictures, I decided to place a bid far higher than I thought anyone would go. So before I left for work, I place the original bid at $87.50 (starting price was $24.99). Some idiot got on eBay at 8:11 a.m. and over a period of 7 minutes, placed 7 bids, inching his way up until he surpassed my original bid. P.O.ed,I came home on my lunch hour to place a snipe bid with 10 seconds to go and did win the lot. The complete bidding history is detailed below. My guess is that if I handn't placed that original bid, this idiot would have bid at most $27.96 and I would have saved a ton of money on this lot. This has happened to me before. The worst case was 23 bids over a period of about half an hour driving the bid up from $80 to $220 (approximately). I won that one too, but it was an expensive lesson. I usually put my snipe bids in early (using special software for that purpose) and never check again until the auction is over. That way, I don't get "caught up" in the auction and overbid. The current lot was an exception because I have never seen these pictures before and may never see them again. I've been fortunate so far in that to the best of my knowledge I have never sniped an OBC'er. If it ever happens, I hope you understand. In the traditional auction universe, it's mostly what you see is what you get. It's hard for people to use a "plant" to force a bidding war to raise the price on something, since it takes extra planning to get the other people involved. At big auctions (Sotheby's, etc), people are checked out before they bid, to verify that they are who they say they are and, in fact, have the money being spent. eBay, however, doesn't have this promise, or at least doesn't enforce it with discipline. Others have commented on sellers who keep shill accounts to dishonestly bump up bids, which sniping might get around (depending on how the seller mis-conducts himself). In the long term, eBay wants to be accessible and make money. It would definitely be possible to be more stringent than they are now, though. If an established name (Microsoft, maybe) came along with an auction system that had similar functionality but gave bidders a better idea of the seller's provenance apart from just feedback, it could definitely take business away. --- John Scott Gray wrote: > Dave and friends, > An interesting story. The answer is, most sellers would like to see way, way over the "fair market value". I believe in the Golden Rule, but I also believe in an eye for an eye. I'll start feeling badly about getting a bargain about the same time dealers feel guilty about getting too much for an item. One of the big attractions of eBay is the lure of bargains for buyers, and the lure of the big score for dealers. Items on auction can sell for more than they are worth, and less than they are worth. The AVERAGE selling price may be an indication of that item's true market value, but any individual sale will generally be more or less than that value. Example: I just won an auction for a Seattle Rainiers photo of Vada Pinson for $3.75 Two weeks before, the same photo from the same dealer sold for $28.77. So, what is the fair market value for this item? I would put the value at more than $3.75, but under $10 (this was a modern photo, not a vintage one). So do I feel guilty for sniping this from him? No, I don't He averaged $16.26 which is doing better than expected. My snipe bid, by the way, was $13.50. I was willing to go over what I felt thefair price was provided someone else was as well. Any market is self-correcting. eBay is very successful, and sniping is quite common. If seller's were not getting fair market value for their wares, they would quit eBay and sell their goods somewhere else. Finally, I don't snipe to beat the dealer out of what the item is worth. Often, my snipe bid never gets placed because others have outbid me first. Often, my snipe bid is only somewhat over a "regular" bid, or another snipebid either beats me or drives me up near my maximum. None of these situations bother me. Like you, I feel the dealer is getting what the market will bear and I have no regrets. I do snipe to protect me against the weird bidders, such as the ones described in my original message. It is instructive to watch what happens when two of them get together on the same auction.I once saw a Dover reprint (one card) that was clearly advertised as a reprint go for over $50 when two such bidders got into the frenzy. Love ya John, and don't mean to sound argumentative. It would be interesting to hear from our members who do a lot of SELLING on eBay - I'd like to know if they have any strong feeling one way or the other about sniping. I do know one dealer who snipes himself when he bids. Do people have one attitude when the buy and another when they sell? Interesting question . . . -Dave Fallen ----- Original Message ----- From: John Scott Gray To: Dave Fallen ; obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, May 06, 2004 8:01 AM Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Sniping - a case in point Dave and friends, An interesting story. The real question hinges on what is more important- your getting a good deal or the seller getting fair open market value. Even though I do not sell, I am in favor of the latter, and wish that eBay would change its system to an adjusted end-time format so that the auction cannot close until at least one minute, maximum five minutes, have passed after the auction's original end time without getting a bid. This would in part make snipe-bidding useless. I guess my thinking applies the old golden rule -- if you were the sellerof that lot, what price would you like to see? As a regular buyer, & irregular seller on Ebay, I've experienced a wide swing on realized prices. As a buyer, I simply bid the highest price I'm willing to pay for an item , at that point in time..When I sell items, I start the bidding at the lowest price I'm willing to accept & I let the market correct itself.... Another angle to look at is that many Ebay sellers are simply trying to 'flip' an item, or 'get rid' of an item. In many cases these same items were acquired from outside sources (Flea markets, Garage sales, Estate sales, storage locker auctions, family attics, etc) and the seller acquired these items for significantly less than his minimum bid (& market/ book value)... You can't feel sorry for an Ebay seller who bought a box of '52 High numbers for $30 at an estate sale, then sold the Mantle for $800, can you? With Ebay, as elsewhere, there are no guarantees. Today I was somewhat surprised to see a collector looking for an unlisted variation of 1967 Topps #128 Ed Spezio with the bat showing in front of his name. I was sure I had a copy of this card, as I had put one in the back of my second set as an interesting curiosity. Upon checking it out this morning, I was saddened to realize that I had taken it out and put it in my dupes box figuring it was just some faded ink on his name. The post on the message board confirmed for me that it was probably more than what I thought it was. I immediately raced to open my dupes box and discovered that it's no longer in there... sigh. My best guess is that someone out there has this card in their 1967 set. I hate when I do that. On a similar note, I also have #250 Flood with a really light printing of his name similar to what I thought was wrong with the Spezio card (only this goes across the entire top of the card, where the Spezio card is only missing some print in the middle of his name, so the bat appears to be on top of the lettering). If you are interested, please respond to me and I will let him know. ================= Date: Wed, 12 May 2004 10:45:48 -0700 (PDT) To: obc ramblings From: Matthew Subject: How much is my childhood worth again? Believe it or not, he does have a baseball card: 1975 Senators 1924-25 TCMA. It does have a listing for Jake Wade, but the listing is nonsense: 1950World Wide Gum. Now, World Wide Gume did have an issue in Jake's debut year (1936) but I don't see him listed there. My understanding of the law is that if you buy a CD/DVD/whatever you are allowed to make ONE copy of it for yourself as a backup. That's the concession that media companies made in all those copyright lawsuits stretching back to the introduction of the VCR. I don't think the fact that you didn't ask for cash is relevant. Baseball cards have cash value. The bottom line that you're not allowed to make copies of the movie to distribute. Unless you show me a note from 20th Century Fox that says you have their permission to duplicate their movie onto DVDR discs and exchange them other items, my position doesn't change. > I paid for the disc I copied it to so I'm already behind in `profit' > if your gonna look at it as that) If you remember, I too worked in > the software business for many years with HP. > I know the law of piracy also. I'm unconvinced of that. So, HP would be ok with you buying one of their programs from them, making a stack of copies and offering to trade those copies for something (cash or goods) to a large number of people? Are we not all friends here? I was attempting to point out the difference between making a single copy of something for a friend and making a whole pile of them available to a large group of people. The first one, even though technically illegal is an everyday occurance. The other one would be looked upon as organized distribution of pirated materials. All those copyright and piracy laws are really an extension of "thou shalt not steal". Even though I'm sure 20th Century Fox isn't hurting for cash, think of it this way. If that Hank Greenberg DVD sells less copies because people are copying them instead of buying them it might cause them not to fund some other baseball related documentary. The rationale being that when they look at the sales charts and see that it only sold 90,000 copies and decide that that sort of thing doesn't make enough return on the investment to further explore that subject. That would be sad if there were really 180,000 copies out there (with 90,000 of them being pirated). > I guess being generous isn't o.k. even if it had no grounds of > maliciousness which could be plainly seen. > I also wish you would have contacted me directly instead of a public > humiliation. It has had some decent, short articles on vintage cards and a few months ago ran a story on our own "industry expert" Ken Morganti. This month's issue has a small story saying that, by the way, they are ceasing publication of this particular magazine thereby joining a list of just about all other hobby publications other than Sports Collectors Digest thateventually stop. The magazine was getting off-base anyway with articles and ads about figurines and other created memorabilia but there is so little written about vintage cards that it is too bad that it is gone. They apparently will be contacting subscribers by letter to find out if they want to use their unearned subscription money in some other way - although they failed to mention it in the article. I have been reading the Card Collectors Bulletins from 1937 through 1970 which Lionel Carter loaned me in order to work on another series of articles for SCD. Now that (CCB) was a publication! Jefferson Burdick wrote 90% of it between 1937 and 1948, about 20% thereafter until his death. Woody Gelmanand Buck Barker also wrote articles. Issues were about 10 pages every other month but loaded with well-written information that is still relavant today. Then under Charles Bray it eventually became an auction listing and petered out in the 1970s. But it was great while it lasted. As some of you know, I am in Canada (Toronto) again. My sister is getting married this weekend (to a great guy too). I did not know when I could leave work yesterday, so I told them I did not know if I would arrive Friday or Saturday. Bailed my boss out of a mess most of Friday morning and walked out the office door at about 12:45. This put me in the Toronto area around 4:30. No one in the family was answering their cell phones. Everyone is staying at a couple of hotels n orth of downtown. However, since my sister is not staying at her house, I saw/see no reason to leave it empty and pay for a hotel room. I therefore headed towards her house. I got off the highway at the wrong exit and was getting myself straightened out when I saw an exit sign for the street that a card shop was on. The card shop is for a dealer I buy a lot from at the semi-annual card show in Toronto that Ron Perry and I were at 2 weeks ago. I had never been to the shop. Got on the street, but of course went in the wrong direction. Got there just after 5:00. Walk in the dealer immediately recognizes me and said I have a couple of boxes I just bought that no one has gone through and there is stuff in there you would like. It is so nice when dealers have vintage stuff and also know what you like. This 1500 box had BB, CFL & hockey in it. Cards ranged from E cards to UV, from superstars to commmons. From penny cards to some that were "priced" at $200.00 (no idea if that was suppose to be US or Canadian). From Tiptonesque to Mint I went through the whole box and found some things I did not even know what they are. Although I did have my briefcase of checklists with me, I did not have the big annual guides to help me out. I pulled those cards anyways. I played it legit and only pulled cards I did not have (except for 2 cards), although I probably should have pulled a few more, from some sets, I do not pick up cards that often from, such as 1952 Parkhurst BB and 1969 OPC Deckle Edge. I ended up pulling and buying a stack of 26 cards, all for $150 US. I still do not know what 3 of the cards are, althoughI am pretty sure they are E cards and 2 others, I am pretty sure, but am not posititve on. Among the pick-ups were: 2 UV hockey cards froma Kraft food including Gretzky on 1 and Hull & Jagr on the other. A pair of 73-4 OPC Hockey leader cards for my variation quest of white back/gray back sets. A 69-70 OPC Hockey Tony Esposito card on the front (this is a rookie that would book for $150 US or so), but has a back of a sheet of the 4 in 1 "stamps" from that year. Neither the dealer nor I had ever seen this before. Wronog backs, sure, but this is the back from the insert from that year which are rear to find by itself. I wonder if this was cut from a display box advertising the set. That does not make much sense, becuase why would they have promoted a rookie back then? Really a neat item. The alst 2 hockey cards were truly Tiptonesque, but included a 1959-60 Parkhurst Frank Mahovlich (1 of 8 cards I needed to finish the set) and a 57-8 Parkhurst Dickie Moore. Picked up a dupe of a 1969 OPC Deckle Edge Roberto Clemente that I think will be an upgrade to my set. The other Tiptonesque card I picked up was a 1954 Topps #32 Duke Snider, which will eventually end up in another OBCers hands. A 1953 Topps #138 George Kell witht he black bio for that insane variation quest. This willalso be 1 of teh nicest 53 Topps I own. 4 more 1952 Parkhurst BB. I now have over 1/4 of the set. A 1952 Topps rookie card of Joe Black. Some of you may know that he is #321. That's right a high number. 1 of the better looking high numbers I now own. I think that also drops me to 100 to go for the set, of which 31 are still not high numbers. A pair of EX-MT 49 Bowman high numbers, including Pete Reiser. a 47 Homogonized Bread in NR-MT of some guy named Stan Musial! A 34 Canadian Goudey, #89 french version. A T-205 of Fred Merkle, may be the nicest T-205 I own (yes Josh, I still need to do my back inventory for you). As if the above haul was not enough, now come the ones I do not know or am unsure of. A Neilson's Chocolate of harry Hooper in EX-MT. A card that I think is a C-55 or 56 ) something like that) that was talked about on ramblings last week. #67? Delehanty on Toronto. A T-206? of Fletcher on NY National. Seems awfully thin to be a 206 and has a "Coupon" (mild) Cigarette back. I am not familiar with this back in the 206 set. An E card that is similar to the 206 front (white border) of Krause on the Athletics, but si a blank white back. 2 other cards from the same set that are larger than E cards. Look a little like miniature exhibit cards as they are black and white photos inside a large white border. Blank back. The 2 players are Louis B. Duncan & B A Falk. They were priced $100 ea. Before I left I also found in another box a few 1963 Nalleys CFL coins, including Joe Kapp and a sp. What a great haul. My sister called my cell phone as I was finishing upand gave me directions to where everyone was meeting for dinner. Good dinner. Except for the Pistons losing in OT it was a fantastic evening. Had I not made a wrong turn, I would not have goen to the card shop. Just lucky he had recently picked up this box and he had not priced it and no one else had gone through it yet. Today we are going tot he Blue Jays game as a group. There is a card shop across the street from teh stadium that I have not been to in about 8 years. Paul from the store yesterday told me to see the manager who is his friend. Tell him I am a good customer of Paul's and he will give me an extra discount. I hope I can stop by the store after the game (I am driving some of my sisters friends to the game and we are all going to dinner afterwards). It is raining lightly this morning. I wonder if this means the dome will be closed. I have been to a couple of games at the Skydome, but never with the dome closed. What a weekend, no wonder I cannot sleep and am typing this treatise. I've seen some of you post information on shows before so I thought I would write a little about it. The admission price was $10 dollars which was pretty steep but there was plenty of vintage stuff and it was worth it. I found a great bargain box dealer named Dan Jacobsen (He does a lot of shows on Long Island). He had a 50 cent box and a 25 cent box, along with some other cards at a dollar. He ended up giving me the 25 cent box at 100 for $15 and shaved a few dollars off some of the other purchases as well. All in all I spent $80 at his booth and walked away with some really excellent stuff, lots of semi high numbers from 72, 71, 69, 65, and some semi star, leader cards, and playoff cards from those years. There were also some off grade star cards in the boxes, picked up a 68 stargell for 50 cents and a 73 Brooks Robinson for 15! Found a guy late in the day trying to get rid of some vintage stuff (uv dealer) and bought 2 1952 topps dodgers and a 1953 topps Yankee for a dollar a piece. My friend got a Cepeda rc and a 61 aaron for $10 each as well. Got a few nice other pickups, the 75 Rice rc for $3 (very close to finished with that set), 1971 Munson $7, 1967 Maris $4, 1953 Al Rsen $4 and some other cards I needed. Many will be switching hands to other OBCers as many of the cards I bought I wont be needing. If anyone is interested in going to the show tomorrow and would like to meet up (I dont plan on going to the show) let me know as I live 10 minutes from the place. ================= Date: Sat, 15 May 2004 18:45:58 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: ursaner@seas.upenn.edu Subject: Side Note On a side note, my friend that I went with is Scott Rogowski and he was very interested in what I was saying about OBC. This of course, is the end of semester season and I've been tied up with exams, grading research proposals and preparing grades. Toward the end of the exam period, I got a call from my brother telling me that my mother had passed out and been taken to the hospital. We weren't sure what the problem was except that she was having trouble breathing. Monday I got a call that she was in critical condition with Pneumonia and that I needed to come quickly. I had to cancel one of my final exams and rush to get all my final grades turned in before leaving about 5 oclock Tuesday morning. When I get to Memphis, I discover that she does indeed have pneumonia and might require long term follow up services. My daughter was scheduled to graduate from Maryville College in Knoxville the following Sunday, so I was in a really tough situation. Fortunately, her doctor is one of the best in Memphis and decided to drain fluid from one of her lungs. Normally this is not a tough decision but at age 89 you hesitate about any invasive procedure. The procedure, thankfully was successful and she immediately showed improvement. Then it was only a matter of time till she could be released. Cutting it very close she was released on Friday at noon, I got her to her house, got all her prescriptions filled, made sure that she and my father were settled and hit the road about 3:30. I got home to Mungumry about 10:00 Fiday night, exhausted. I went to bed, got up the next morning, repacked my bags and I and the wife and youngest daughter hit the road for Knoxville, getting here about 6:00 EDT. We went to a reception for the graduates last night then came back to the family van to go aqck to the hotel when the car wouldn't start. Some very nice people tried to help by boostin us off but no go. So today we are having it towed to Sears for repairs. Fortunately I brought lots of cash. Mike's right, some things are better not said, but i'm sure I didn;t see any of them anyway. Mike is an incredible host. The ribs are spectacular, the friendship wonderful. Judy and I arrived with Judy's clothes and my golf clubs, but my clothes (and cards) were nowhere to be found. I was afraid I would have to spend the weekend in a dress, but the clothes were at the hotel by the end of ribfest. Cards fly, as usual. Most of the guys are getting pretty organized, so they fly in premade packages. Here are my thanks, with apologies to anyone if I get it wrong: thanks to George Hay for 10 1960 Topps, to Rex Stahlman for 14 1961 Topps, To Joe Cerullo for a Fine Pen Sam Byrd, to Ken Morganti for a 61T Brooks Robinson and an 80T Jim Rice, to Joel Glickman for a really cool Vegas 04 pin, to Peter Iverson for a 61Topps that he miraculously found after a emptied his dups box a couple months ago, to Josh Levine for a 59T, 2 62T's, 1 60T, and 4 61T's, to Larry Gershbach for 3 62T's, and to Todd Knowles for a cool post card of Carl Yastrzemski. As usual the best part of the weekend was the unique friendship of a bunch of people of all ages and completely different professions who meet mostly on the internet but get along so incredibly well. The golf tournament was in incredible success ... won as usual by Team Hair. Uniquely, infamous OBC golfer Rick Ellison was on Mike's team, marking the first time Rick has ever been on a winning team. The win was marked by an anterisk*, but the reasons probably ought to stay in Las Vegas. Was the Geno Wagner longest drive contest won by Joe Cerullo, whose 40 yard drive was in the fairway? Or Ken Morganti, whose 270 yard drive was in the first cut? Or was it the fairway? the answer stayed in Vegas. Team Smith of Smith, Luurs, Hay, and Cerullo was handicapped by their captain but played good enough to win except for a half dozen putts that lipped out. A great time was had by all. The Morganti Challenge was won in come from behind fashion by none other than me. 32 putts on the front nine seemed to put me out of the running, but a spectacular 21 on the back pushed me into the lead? Not sure, actually. I was tied with Rex Stalhman at 53 I thought. Went to return the putters, and was announced the winner on my return. Another asterisked* victory? Did I win because the prize, a Salt Lake Stingers tee shirt, provided by Glenn Codere I think, was too small for Rex? The answer remains in Las Vegas. We skipped the ball game and instead had a wonderful dinner with George and Lucy and Joel, highlighted no doubt by me explaining the virtues of Fox news (that better stay in Vegas too). We'd planned on seeing Celine Dion but she cancelled. Oh well, the dinner was better. By the time I got to the card show at the mall my OBC friends had pretty well bought them out. Josh bought the bargain of the century. I'd best let him tell that story. We stopped by Hooters for the closing lunch but stayed only long enough to say goodbye. We had an afternoon flight back and Vegas still hasn't figured out airport security. Thanks to everyone, particularly Mike, for making Vegas04 a great event. Al should arrive shortly. - Doug ================= Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 10:07:11 -0700 (PDT) To: obc ramblings From: Matthew Subject: NE OBCers: Tri-Star show over Memorial Day Hi guys, It's been a couple of years, so I'm thinking of giving the Tri-Star show in Marlborough another chance. Since I gain an hour leaving Ohio, I had plenty of time. Little did I realize how much, as foul Chicago weather backed up all Indy flights & I didn't get on a plane until 2PM. By then the Chicago storms reached Indy & the plane sat on the tarmack for another hour. Finally I'm on my way to Denver for a connecting flight. Come into the far end of terminal B, have 15 minutes to catch the connector out of terminal A. Looked like OJ running thru the airport. Arrived in Vegas, got my Avis rental & called the numbers keeper Todd Knowles. Great directions to the ribfest, only missed one turn two blocks from Mike's house. The half-rubber was well under way, after quick hello's my belly told me the ribs were calling. Mike's back yard is an Oasis paradise, with a water falls. The food & beer hit the spot. The veterans allowed me to pitch the last inning of the half rubber. Geordie pounded the ball off my hanging curves to win the contest. Talk turned to heading out to the Railroad Pass. Asked to use the telephone to ensure my room reservations, Mike graciously pointed to the house & said just thru the door. I took him literally & proceeded to walk thru the closed screen door. Mike kindly said they were planning on replacing it anyways with French Doors. Throughout the evening BB cards were given & received. The RR Pass Casino saw the OBC in force gathered around the Craps table. I stood next to Mike Hair as he won mucho $ while Trips' daughter rolled the dice for what seemed like a half hour. Mike attemted to explain to me the nuances of the game like true odds, spreads, presses & buys. In the end I merely did as he did, but must have immediately changed his luck because I didn't win a cent. We closed the table at 10:30PM, I have now been up for about 21 straight hours. Doug Smith told me he would pick me up @ 5:15AM for the pre-match excuse breakfast. Not much sleep, I'm outside with my clubs at 5AM so as to not miss Trader Doug. Two ladies of the evening walk by & ask if I want company. Assuming they're asking if I want a couple of caddies I answered no that we were using golf carts. I was told at the breakfast, Rookie mistake & was not allowed any strokes for my error in judgement. The other excuses profferred by the OBCers gather brought much laughter but alas no strokes given. The odd on favorite (as in strange) team of Mike, Geordie, Trips & myself began with a birdie on the first hole. There after, Mike's shoulders were broad enough the carry us to victory(*). My smash on the longest drive hole was three rib lengths past the ladies tee, but it was in the fairway. Geordie out drove me by about 300 yds. The clutch put of the day was Mike's 30ft snake on 16th par three for a bogey with the following foursome chanting "double" from the tee. Trips chipped one in from off the green early in the match, but had to take a lie detector test as no one would believe him. Beer & BS followed on the clubhouse patio afterwards. Lunch was eaten at the Haufbrau House. Saurkraut & beer, don't get to close to me the rest of the day. Josh Levine showed up with the BB card find of the century. Everyone was drooling over that one. Seems several of the guys who chose not to partake in the golf went to a local mall for a card show. Josh's impish grin & kind words must have convince some old man that he was his long lost son, because Josh surely obtained the inheritance. (I'll allow him the pleasure of revealing the details, all I'll say is complete 1941 Play Ball set.) We all went looking for that old guy the next day. The Morganti Challenge followed lunch. Eight hardy souls gathered at the Mini Golf Course. Every one won some cards. I claimed a 53 Bowman-Color Garagiola with the first hole in one. I was also the only one to hit the ball into the water. Don't ask me how because I still don't know how I did it. Trader Doug & Rex Stahlman tied for low gross. However the Championship shirt was awarded to Doug because Rex had such a big heart. The day ended at the 51's game, Dodgers AAA affiliate. Much offense, no pitching or defense. Final score about 13-10, home team wins. Went back to the room. Been up now for 39 of the last 43 hours. Slept like a baby. Sunday went by quickly, Card swapped with Ray Luurs early AM, visited the card show, alas no old men looking to give away vintage cards. Visited Baseball Card Heaven. The card shop was ready to deal with the onslaught of OBCers. Ended up with a 71T-Clemente, 70T & 69T Nolan Ryan, about 30 hi # 64T's that were sharp enough to shave with, & about two dozen other cards, 65T Hi#'s, 60 Fleers, 50s Bowmans etc. All that for less than $180. I figured I would have lost that much in the slots. Off to Hooters for the break up luncheon. A mystery benefactor treated the rabble that showed up. Could it have been Josh's old man? The day ended at Sam's Town with a goodbye dinner with the Coderes, Iversons, Mike, Geodie, Todd & Ken. I was then off to the airport & the Redeye home. Just got home about an hour ago and put something in my safe that I never thought I would own... The story goes something like this... In Las Vegas for the annual OBC get together. It is Saturday morning and the majority of the guys are golfing. I decide to go to the mall (friend Heather helps this idea along) since there is a card show there. Arrive at the mall and find one table with anything like vintage cards and buy a couple of '62 Post and a '63 Jello for $5. Decent cards and a decent buy. I am getting frustrated when I notice the mall has two wings, and East and West. Call Heather to tell her I am heading to the East wing, she tells me that is fine since she is spending her money at Macys (oh yeah, first day in Vegas, Heather drops 75 cents in a machine at the Sahara and hits a $1000 jackpot--she was very happy to have money to spend at the mall!). East wing yeilds a few more tables with vintage. Buy a pile of cards from a dealer incl. a '63 Exhibit Stat back Nelson Fox, 2 '71 Supers, 2 '55 Redman without tabs incl. Rizzuto, and two '55 Redmans with tabs incl. Spahn. Total price $25. I was now happy since I thought this was a great price....but it was not the deal of the century... As I approached the last table with anything vintage there was an older gentleman (late 70s early 80s) with a binder. In the binder I spied some older cards but could not tell what they were. He kept trying to get the attention of the dealer but the dealer kept talking to a friend and shuffling cards. He finally looked at the binder and gave the guy his business card. While waiting for the dealer to finally notice him, he turned and introduced himself to me as Earl. I asked him if I could look at the binder if the dealer was not interested. He said fine. I waited off to the side and when Earl walked up and handed me the binder I was kind of disappointed when the first cards I saw was a set of Nolan Ryan Pepsi cards from Donruss. Was not disappointed when he turned to the back and showed me some Playballs from 1941. Yes, 1941 Playballs. Wait, all of them!! A WHOLE SET OF '41 PLAYBALLS. Williams and Dimaggio (all three incl!) Hubbell, Ott, Danning, Gomez, etc. I had never held a set of Playballs. Nice ones too...Most vg-vg+, a few that were good, a few that were ex. None poor-fair! Nice set. He tells me how he collected as a kid and traded four Pirates (he is from Pitt.) for the last card he needed, the Bobby Doerrer. He said make an offer. I told him I could only take out $300 from my ATM in any one day. He said fine. I said $300? They are worth more. He said that I was obviously a collector who knew his stuff and that he would rather me have them than a dealer. He also laughed and said that he was getting a bargain since he probably paid a total of $2 for the whole set in 1941!! We walked to the ATM, handed him $300 and walked away with a 1941 PLAYBALL SET. Did not sleep the rest of the weekend. I borrowed a Beckett just to check and realized that the set books for $10000 (ten-thousand)!! in Nrmt, $7000 in vg 3% of book for a pre-war set. I am in heaven!! Heather won a $1000 but I found a $6700 bargain. I have attached a post of the set....ask the Vegas guys about holding a 1941 Playball set at lunch. Unbelievable!!! PS As usual the rest of the weekend was great and a huge thanks to Mike and Cindy Hair for their hosting duties. ================= Date: Fri, 21 May 2004 12:40:07 -0700 (PDT) To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Chris Stufflestreet Subject: Sometimes a few good deals still can be found on eBay... I found a guy today on ebay with a ton of them. His ebay store is http://stores.ebay.com/Matchcovers-Galore_W0QQsspagenameZl2QQtZkm There were lots of Cubs available. I picked up the Stan Hack. If anyone else wants some, I can pick it up for you and the shipping will be just 5 cents more for me (after paying $1.40 for shipping on the first one). He has FB and HKY matchbooks too (plus lots of other matchbooks). ps I saw a Red Sox matchbook cover on there but it was beat up and $5. $5 for Stan Hack makes sense but not for a beat up Red Sox common. It always costs more when you bring your daughter but it was worth a mini-OBC meeting with the Northwest's spirtual leader !!! When we arrived, Al immediately pushed his dupes box to me and I handed over a 1964 Mickey Mantle Auravision Record in return (Have you guys seen these...they are neat, great photos !) I pulled several great cards from the box. 3 from the 1955 T set which I decided to collect recently, and 7 more from the 1954 T which is beginning tofill in the binder a bit. Great names like Spook Jacobs, Ted Lepcio and Skinny Brown. THANK YOU AL !!!!!!!!!! Before the trip, I stopped by the post office for the first time this week.Great incomings, you know....mortgage payment ,phone bill, envelope from Lynn Miller, newspaper, PC magazine, Veternarian's bill for the new dog....wait Wait !!! what was that 3rd one ?? Why it's a great puffy from the OBC Bubblehead !!! Inside was a 6 pack of black beauties including Jim Palmer and 4 more from 67 including Harmon Killebrew !!! WOW !!! I got so excited I neraly threw away the mortgage bill !! THANK YOU LYNN !!!!!!!! Oh....back to my story because this is turning into a long, need- a- sandwich We had about an hour to BS after the Toads ordered some fast food that cameslowly, and the girls sauntered off to buy some cheap jewelry. It's alwaysgreat to visit OBC-style...casual fun. I explained how the Mariners shouldbe trading off those old players to get some new blood...they are playing old My Phillies started the year off with the same 1-6 record, but we rose to first place. The Ancient Mariners could be in last place with or without some of these veterans. Then we decided we'd try to go to a game this summer to see the rookies play in Tacoma...if we don't hurry they may be in the bigleagues !!! Go Phils !!! I hope to hook up with Al and others in this chapter again real soon. I'm already looking through all my old cards for #44's so that I can have something to share when I get there. The '68 card shows him in his catching gear. The team listed is "Orioles," though no insignia shows. That was a help when he was drafetd by the expansion Pilots for '69. In his '69 card, Haney is shown as a Pilot, and the same photo is used...but it's been reversed, so it shows him catching left-handed. OBC's own "original" Frank Thomas shows up in the 1962 Topps set as an original member of the New York Mets. Not surprisingly, Frank's photo is one taken during his days as a Pirate, but sans cap. Frank's 1965 card shows him with yet another team (Phillies I think), but still uses that photo he took as a member of the OTHER Pennsylvania club. Lots of the cards from '54-'56 used the same photo. Topps only had one staff photographer at the time, so pictures were still a little hard for the young company to come up with ('54 was the first year they actually used photos; the '52 and '53 sets used artwork). Look at Hank Aaron's first three cards...all use the same photo, though the "action" shot in his '56 card actually shows Willie Mays, but that's a different matter entirely. We all know Lou Piniella showed up on three separate "Rookie Stars" cards ('64, '68 and '69) with three separate teams, and it looks to this observer that all three show the same photo, only with Lou's hair airbrushed where the Senators cap was on his '64 card for the last two. The list goes on... Take care, --- senthi wrote: > Hello all, > I read an article ans saw pic's of the card > companies habits of re0using the same picture from > year to year. Right now, I'm off to two baseball tryouts with my 10 year old son, Ryan, who is turning in to a pretty good ballplayer, far better than his old man ever was. The two travel teams he is trying out for are very competitive, so we'll see if he makes either one or needs to keep working at his skills. I enjoyed meeting Ken this morning--about the 25th OBCer I have met. Unfortunately, we didn't arrange the meeting in advance, and so no cardboard was exchanged (but an envelope will be in the mail tomorrow, Ken). The show was about average for me--I found three hits to my 1957 and two hits to my 1956 Topps lists, and one hit each to my 1954 and 1955 Bowman lists. I am afraid that I kind of scolded Ken for crowing over a couple of finds in a bargain bin. Sorry, Ken. The dealer clearly did not know the value of some of the cards. I try to keep a poker face in those situations. I figure that if you gloat in front of the dealer, he will not cut you a deal on whatever you buy--this time or any time in the future. The dealer will also be less likely to cut deals for other collectors. When I find a dealer who doesn't know the value of his cards, I ask him if he has any more cards just like these rather than tell him I'd expect to pay 25 times his asking price. Then I gloat to my OBC friends. Mike W ken goetsch wrote: Was heading off to Milwaukee this morning, about 40 miles from where I live in Watertown..... Roundup and Thanks! Maureen and I arrived home safely on Thursday morning, after nearly 19 hours of travel. We were both pretty tired, but the experiences of the previous month, and in particular the OBC Vegas weekend were well worth it! It was so much fun meeting up with Geordie, Todd, Mike H, Gersh, Rex, Joe, Joel, Ray, Kit, and Peter I for the first time, and getting the chance to reacquaint myself with Trips*, Trader Doug, Josh, Ken, and George H. The chance to also meet up with wives/friends/daughters/nieces/etc. also went a long way towards making this already special weekend that much more enjoyable. The highlights for me were many. Here’s a little list of some of them. The golf tournament was terrific fun, although the result was just a little disappointing. I’d always been led to believe that tradition held a special place among OBCers. Surely the decision to award the win to Rick Ellison’s team*, and break one of OBC’s most dearly held “streaks” is one that will be regretted in years to come. But I’m not bitter in the least. Having the opportunity to hold a complete set of 1941 Playball in my hands was an unexpected delight. The look of sheer joy on Josh’s face that whole day summed up exactly what it meant to him. Mike Hair’s Famous Ribs came right up to – nay, exceeded – expectations, as did his and Cindy’s gracious and generous hospitality. The added entertainment of watching Gersh go “mano y mano” with Mike’s screen door (the door won hands down) simply made the evening even more memorable. Obviously feeling guilty about claiming the golf tournament under dubious circumstances (no really, I’m not bitter about that), Rick* took me under his considerable wing to teach me 2 new games in one evening – halfrubber and craps. In the end, I was crap at halfrubber, and got halfrubbered on the craps table. Since I’ve lived in Scotland for over 30 years now, I’ve developed what one might call a “mid-Atlantic” accent. Of all the OBCers present at Mike’s BBQ, Rex Stahlman – who has the most pronounced Texan drawl that I’ve ever heard – was the one who accused me of “talking funny”. Ain’t irony wonderful? The pins presented to the group by Joel were fantastic. It’s an item that I’ll treasure for many, many years to come. As is the usual custom at OBC get-togethers, cards flew around with wreckless abandon. Despite the fact that I’d brought scant little across the big pond with me, quite a few made the return journey. Like many others, I found myself being handed cards from so many sources that it soon became impossible to remember who provided what, but be assured that my heartfelt thanks goes out to each and every one of you. I would however like to single out one particular individual for thanks. Conspicuous by his absence was Steve Rittenberg, although he still had a major impact on my weekend. Steve sent 2 large envelopes to Mike’s house for me. Inside was an incredible array of cards. Baseball, hockey, football. Individual cards, inserts, and starter sets. 3 Gordie Howes, a bunch of ’69 decals including Mantle, Aaron, Rose, and Gibson. Nearly 400 cards all told. Tucked in amongst this treasure trove was a short note from Steve…..”Sorry I couldn’t come up with more”. Are you kidding me?? I’d also to pass on a special thank you to Geordie, Todd, Gersh, and Rex for chauffeuring Maureen and I around, and to Geordie for picking up the tab at Hooters on Sunday. Once again, though, the biggest thank you goes to everyone who attended and stretches beyond the exchange of cardboard to friendships which I hope we’ll be able to renew many times in years to come. I hope to see you all again at the “Shampoo” weekend. That’s “V05” to the uninitiated. Glasgow, Scotland Ps Did I mention that I’m not bitter about the golf tournament? Well, I’m not. Really. Saturday, June 19 there is a card show at the Southwyck Mall on Reynolds Rd., Toledo. Advertised as a 60 table show on Beckett's web site, www.beckett.com . It's usally worth going to as there should be at least a couple of good dealers with some decent stuff. It's of course a free show since it is a mall and there should be someone signing. (could be baseball, football, hocky etc.) Southwyck Mall is very close to Rt. 23/475, if you want to check mapquest or one of the other map sites the Southwyck Mall is 2040 Reynolds Rd. Toledo, Ohio. This is actually a three day show F-S-S, Friday the mudhens aren't at home and Sunday my wife has already made plans for me/us, but Saturday would work as the Mud Hens have a home game against the Louisville Bats, at 7:00PM. I would suggest that we meet at the Mall Saturday afternoon. I could fit up to four plus myself in my Pt Cruiser from the show to the game, with a stop off for a little lunch/refreshments on the way. If this sounds like something you would like to participate in then please let me know asap. I will have to make arrangements to get off work since I work weekends. And his email address > is being bounced back to me. If you've been in OBC less than about 3 years, you probably don't know who I am and you may not fully realize how thoughtful and giving the people in this group are. The next time there's dissention in this group over copyright issues or who posted about UV cards on the main server or someone wanting to trade or sell a particular high-dollar card in this forum, let's not forget to step back and realize what drew us all here in the first place and has kept us here through all the family feuding... the great friends we have here and the common interest we all have in Old Baseball Cards. Almost two years ago, Lynn sent me some Ted Lyons cards for my collection. My interest in his career is that Ted and I share the same birthplace of Lake Charles, LA, and my mother-in-law's research has discovered my wife and Ted share a common ancestor some 5-8 generations ago. He also retired to a farm just outside where I grew up and died at the local hospital just about 6 weeks after I graduated from high school. Now at the time Lynn sent those cards, I had been completely inactive in OBC for at least year or two... perhaps even more. I don't have a stash of vintage cards from my youth, and money's been tight for a while. I've been busy writing music for my jazz ensemble (and just recently got asked to direct a community-level jazz band where I live now). I haven't bought any cards on eBay or at local shops in a long time. A couple of years ago the Rangers discontinued the card show that accompanied their annual winter carnival, and that was where I had been stockpiling vintage material for myself and others. Lynn still sent some very nice Lyons items for my collection a few years ago that now reside in our curio cabinet with the rest of them. Fast forward now two years later, and I STILL haven't bought any new old cards. I STILL haven't sent anything out. I STILL haven't updated my wantlists. I STILL barely post here except when I can't resist chiming in on a Pete Rose debate or to debunk some of the many many lies of Bud Selig..... and Lynn is STILL unearthing cards of a prewar HoFer for me. Feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness don't even *begin* to describe what I'm feeling. That's what makes it so hard for me to think about responding "no" to the membership polls even though I've been an OBCer in name only for what must be about 4 years now. I still read the Ramblings and try to keep up with what's going on here even though I'm about a detached from the cardboard fun as possible. At some point I'm sure the financial picture will change, I'll have some money to spend on cards again and the time to spend with them, and I'll feel more like a part of OBC. This group has been so generous to me.... I'll have to be at it for a long time to catch up. Lynn, I'll catch up with you offline soon about the Lyons card. Thank you so much for remembering me again. This has turned out to work really well to my benefit. Her husband Derek has just recently retired. He happens to own his own plane, a Cessna 172. Since Claire was on the DL and my bride (poor thing) is still working, Derek and I have been sharing expenses and flying up. It actually works out both cheaper and faster (by about 3 hours) for me. This past week was very constructive, and completely out of character. Got a tin roof put on the trailer, finished the siding on the cabin, dropped 3 very annoying trees, and built an outdoor shower stall. Still pretty primitive, you have to lay a solar bag out in the sun for about 3 hours, then hang it up. Showers are quick, but very welcome. Almost civilized. Obtained a solar power system, very basic, enough to run some lights, and a TV, radio, etc. if we ever decide to go really citified. All of this was done with zero blood loss, no slings or splints, no First Aid at all. I may have turned the corner, and apparently the key is leaving your wives at home. (Neither Claire nor Jenny is real happy with their spouses these days.) Only two items of note really. First, and obviously very important, there was a beer strike just before we headed up last week. Hippie Jim (neighbor on the other side) has a real fondness for Kokanee, to the tune of around 18 or so a day, but NEVER before 7:30 a.m. Has to have his cup of tea first. He was forced to drink Rainier, which almost killed him. I was sage enough to stow a couple of dozen Kokanee away, so he was pretty much my best friend for that week. Even took me out "yachting" on his 16 footer, and we played with some porpoises, and he gave me a bit of a tour of Desolation Sound, which is simply outstanding country. Hey.John Wayne spent a lot of time up there on his converted misnesweeper The Wild Goose, ...if it was good enough for him. The other item of note occurred the first morning I woke up, around 5:45 or 6:00. (No, I don't drink beer that early.) I was having my first cup of java, and keep this part in mind, we are around 100' above the shore, and it's fairly steep. What to my wondering eyes should appear, but a family of sea otters walking through the front yard. Now, deer I am used to, but what the heck would the otters be doing up here, 100' feet above their feeding grounds? I soon found out when the big guy kinda crouched and left his calling card beside my lawn chair. I kinda thought, "Why not? Everyone else does." This Friday, Jenny and her sister are going to the island for 3 or 4 days. I told her I can't wait for her to get back, which is absolutely true. As soon as she gets home, Derek and I are heading for the 172 and we are outta here. Next projects: install the solar power system, set up a water catchment system (just in case we get some rain up there.damn little rain in the summer) and there is ONE more 125' tree that signed its own death warrant last week, when it dropped a dead limb within about 10 feet of my head. That would have hurt. All I have to do is talk it into falling the right direction, but it must be killed before the summer tree-huggers get there to give me grief. If anybody wants pics, drop me a line, and I'll send a couple. Stay tuned! ================= Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 19:48:03 EDT To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OCTraders@yahoogroups.com, From: biggies@aol.com Subject: Football available Hi Cardboardians, I have some Football that I don't collect. I'm not really an avid baseball card collector as much as a baseball memorabilia collector e.g. Hartlands, cards, buttons etc I'm interested in finding out about the "art" or cartoons that adorned the backs of the cards when I was growing up i.e. late 1950s and 1960s. I haven't been able to find anything about it. I'd like to know if you could recommend a website, book etc that would point me in the right direction. Specifically, I'd like to know who did the cartoons and see examples of the cartoons. I don't know if I need to join your site before asking this question. If I'm "out of turn," please forgive me. I just thought that your group would know where I can go to find out about this baseball card Thanks so much for your help. The sad news:Two weeks ago my Mom died after a long battle with Alzheimer's complicated by her longer battle with a bi-polar disorder. She essentially surrendered to the inevitable and stopped eating. As per her very specific wishes we would not allow feeding tubes, respirators or other artificial life support systems. It was a very tough decision but I believe the right one in respecting my Mothers request to die naturally and with dignity. The bad news: last week my 23 year old son had a recurrence of symptoms from a kidney disease diagnosed several years ago. The symptoms have pretty much subsided but he is not looking forward to some rather uncomfortable & undignified tests to monitor the progression. If you are working on the set, or want to buy a starter set, let me know. Unfortunately, I am sitting on over 20,000 extra vintage cards (all four sports plus non-sports) while it has become harder to get the bills paid every month. Is there any choice but to put my extras on ebay? 90% of these extra cards were purchased after I had finished my own sets. There are a few cards here from Bowman sets that arrived from OBC because I had not updated my lists. Those are "dupes" and will be recycled back into OBC. It'd be nice to give all my extra cards to OBC but at some point, I need to re-coup some money. I suppose I also need to make up a "dealer scum" page as well for stuff like high numbers and stars. I've put that off for a while. Scanning is a pain for me but its either scan the cards or send them out "on approval".
