As usual, after looking over all the other tables at the show I only spent money at one table. Of course, that table belonged to Kurt Tourdot, so my money was spent in a good place. While at Kurt's table, I knocked two sets off my list. I picked up a 1968 Topps Game Clemente to finish off that small set. I also found three more for the 1968 main set, down to only 17 left for that one. The big news is that I finished the 1956 Topps set. I found the final card for my 1956 Topps set, Don Larsen. Mr. Larsen set me back a mere $3, which I think is $1 more than I paid for the '56 Mantle card in my set. Granted, I bought that back in 1980 or so when a NM Mantle was probably $50 or so. Anyway, it was a monumental occasion for me. This is the oldest set that I have finished. I foolishly sold my original collection in the mid80s, but somehow managed to hang on to a handful of cards. Those cards were: 1952 Topps Duke Snider, 1954 Topps Duke Snider, 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle and Harmon Killebrew, 1968 Topps Harmon Killebrew, and a 1975 Topps Harmon Killebrew. Soon after I joined OBC, I added the 1956 Topps set to my list thinking that I would never complete the set. I figured since I already had the Mantle, I might as well add it to my list. Like I said, I never expected to ever finish the set. But, OBC proved me wrong. It took many years and many people contributed to the set. I wish I could remember all the names, but I can't. Still, thank you to everyone who made this accomplishment possible. ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Mon, 05 Apr 2004 13:02:34 -0400 From: "Bob Reed" Subject: Indian Tickets. (Beware Long! Ramble--Ken Size) I have been fortunate over the years to maintain friendships with some people that have afforded a little first grade teacher some fantastic experiences in my life. Yesterday was a wonderful day for me and could actually lead to some bigger things in my life. Chapter One--Friday Freeway Series Fun One of my best friends, Jeremy, is a lawyer in a large law firm in Boston (he grew up here in California). His firm was hired a year ago to broker the deal between the Los Angeles Dodgers, Fox Broadcasting, and Frank McCourt. For a long time I was not able to talk about the purchase because Jeremy had a gag order on. Last month, Jeremy came to town to finalize the deal and said he would be back this weekend and to be ready for some baseball. Jeremy arrived Wednesday and told Michael (OBC friend), Mitch (my longtime friend), and me to meet him at the stadium Friday for the Freeway Series and there would be will call tickets for us in Lot 6. I know the stadium and Lot 6 is the loge level near home plate, so I was happy to have decent tickets. Got to the stadium an hour early got our tickets and was floored to realize that they were Stadium Suite tickets. I have sat a lot of places but not the Suites. All four of finally arrived and Mitch surprised all of us by telling us that his wonderful wife is pregnant. Spent the game in the suite with free food, beer, dessert, programs, media reports, and the laker game on the set. It was fantastic. The suite is large with 8 t.v.'s, a vcr, fridge, freezer, closets, couchs, chairs, and a sliding glass front that leads out to a balcony with 10 very comfy chairs. We were one suite over from the owner's box and was able to spy Frank McCourt and Arte Moreno (the Angels owner) talking it up. After the game, Jeremy asked which of us would be able to attend the Monday Home Opener knowing full well that I have the week off and would be the only one able to come to a 1 pm game. He told me it would be fun. As we were leaving we ran into the Dodgers Marketing Director, Stephanie. I was introduced and Jeremy said we would try to see her on Monday. Chapter Two--Opening Day Game Picked Jeremy up downtown on Monday around noon. Got to the game just as Gagne was handed his Cy Young award and a fighter jet fly over. Got to sit in the same suite. This time was vastly different though. Jeremy's boss and the head of the firm was there and several partners. I just sat off to the side for most of the game. The suites balconies are open and you can easily talk to the people next to you and hop from suite to suite if you need to. About the third inning, they brought in a large carving cart and food prep. tables. A chef wearing a Dodgers Jersey style outfit came in with it. The chef was Wolfgang Puck!! He cooked our food and served us some incredible dips and sauces to go with Prime Rib, scallops, shrimp, pasta, and Dodger Dogs!! I knew the day was going to go well... Filled up my plate and went back to my seat on the balcony. Glance to my right and blurt out, "Aren't you Mike Marshall and Rudy Law?" Yep. Both were sitting right next to me in the suite next door. Mike Marshall (the pitcher) explained that many of the Dodgers of the '70s and '80s were there that day to be honored between innings. Finish lunch and switch seats and glance over at the daughter of the firm's managing partner looking at what appears to be a bat. I move closer and realize it is a cane made out of a bat with close to 75 signatures on it. I realize that the person holding the other end of the bat is Rod Dedeaux, coach of USC baseball, HOFer, essentially the father of modern college baseball (John Wooden used to be called the Rod Dedeaux of Basketball!!). He asks me if I recognize the signatures. The bat/cane turned in my hand as I recited, "Bob Gibson, Willie McCovery, Mark McGuire, Red Scheondist, Mays, Newcombe, Drysdale, Koufax, Lasorda, George Bush Sr., Lou Brock, Don Sutton, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Tom Hanks, Brooks Robinson, Bob Feller, Orlando Cepeda, Don Larsen, Ralph Branca, George Bush Jr., Ted Williams, Pete Rose, Stan Musial..." and several more I can't even remeber. The bat is priceless as was talking to Mr. Dedeaux. Visit the dessert cart and come back to hear a familiar voice say "Hiya coach." Tommy Lasorda had come up with Maury Wills to say hello to Mr. Dedeaux. As I was shaking Tommy's hand (remember, I do not do autographs, I shake hands), there was a rustle and noise in my suite. I turn around and Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey are standing in my suite. Davey Lopes is down on the field in the first base coaches box for the Padres...I realize how little Garvey and Cey are. Very short. The rest of the game is spent watching the Dodgers strand 18 baserunners and lose 8-2. Chapter 3-- After the Game Jeremy and the attorneys are all talking. Jeremy is trying to get a badge for me to go down onto the field after the game for an opening day mixer. I am bored and excuse myself to use the restroom. Use the very nice suite facility and turn around and see Frank McCourt standing there. I do not know what to say but he says hello first. Then asks me what I was talking to Mr. Dedeaux about. We talk and chat in the bathroom for about 5 minutes and continue to talk out into the hall. Meanwhile the attorneys from our suite have moved out into the hall and Jeremy is standing there with his mouth open as Frank shakes my hand again and says he hopes to see me downstairs in a few minutes. I say sure!! We all walk down to the field level about five minutes later and Stephanie sees us and escorts me without a badge onto the field saying I am a personal friend. She is there to give out special 2004 Opening Day baseballs to the kids to get signatures of the players. Seems that Mr. McCourt is very family oriented (thank heavens)!! Now I am on the field with Jeremy, current players including David Ross, Dave Roberts, Juan Encarnacion, and Tom Martin, and the retired players I mentioned before including Manny Mota, Steve Yeager, John Roseboro, Jim Gott, and a few others. Met everyone and had some Diet Cokes and more Wolfgang Puck finger foods. It is now nearly two hours after the game and I am talking to Frank's sons Travis and Drew when a very young looking and skinny guy walks up to us and is introduced to me as Bill Depodesta, the Dodgers 30 year old Yale graduate, genius, General Manager. I introduce myself but he is called away for a picture before I have a chance to talk to him further. Most everyone is gone and Jeremy and I are now walking towards the exit by the Dodger's Dugout when Frank comes out and gives us grief about leaving and not saying goodbye. Spend about the next fifteen minutes chatting with him and he shakes my hand again and says he hopes to see me again soon. He and his family are very nice people and I was very impressed with him and his easy way with the players, staff, and fans. Said hello to everyone and was friendly and easygoing both in private and in front of the media. Very excited about the future of the Dodgers with him at the head. Also glad to see he values family as his children, wife, and even mother were all at the game and all wonderful people. Chapter Four--Walking the Halls Dodger stadium is quiet and nearly empty. Jeremy and I have to walk up the escalators to the Club level from the field to get to our car. As we approach the escalators, Stephanie arrives from out of nowhere and hands us the last two baseballs she has and thanks us for coming. She is wonderfully sweet and works very hard. That was very cool. We trudge up the escalators and as we reach the club level Bill Depodesta, the GM is just coming out of the offices. He stops and I get to introduce him to Jeremy and we end up chatting for about 20 minutes about Bill James, stats, On Base %, the Milton Bradely trade, the fact that the Dodgers still need to cut salary but there probably wont be any trades for at least two months, and SABR. Shake hands and tell him good luck. Take Jeremy back to downtown, pay my parking and call my father and grandfather on the way home to tell them the story and it finally sinks in that I spent the day with an owner, a GM, current and former players, a living legend (or two), an opening day baseball game, and one of my best friends. This was the highlight of a very long year. Hope you all enjoyed reading about it as much as I enjoyed living it and writing about it again. ================= Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 17:00:57 -0700 (PDT) To: obc ramblings From: Matthew Subject: Anyone still working on 1967 pinups? You will not be disappointed, this trip did not go without adventure. For once, I hit the weather right- beautiful blue skies all week long. Arrived late afternoon, surveyed how much work there was to be done during the next week. The next morning, my second cup of java did its' work, so off to the outhouse I go. Oh-oh, didn't notice THAT last night! A 6 inch cedar had come down over the winter, missed the outhouse by a mere 4 inches, and had the door wedged shut. Not a chance of getting in there. Back to the shed for the chain saw, this should make me real popular with the folks nearby, it's only 7 am. Now that I can't have the outhouse, I really have to GO! Managed to free the door in only 3 cuts, and didn't spill a drop of blood. Glad I wasn't in the outhouse when the tree came down, that would have made for quite the story. My neighbors (Derek and Claire) were also up for the week, so we joined forces to have a honking great bonfire for all the winter downfall. Derek is also a retired police officer, but he was only a Mountie, not a real city cop. Things were just going along way too smoothly I thought. At one point I had returned to my cabin, likely to grab a beer or something equally constructive, when I heard a shriek. I knew Claire was deathly afraid of writhing creatures so I assumed she had disturbed a garter snake. When I got back outside, I saw her lying on the road with Derek at her side. Turns out she had been pulling on some underbrush, which tore loose unexpectedly, and she fell over backwards, putting her arms out to break her fall. She did more than that, she also broke her wrist. Experience on that Island has me prepared. I have a first aid kit that would rival any ambulance. Off I went for the splint, gauze, and slings, then started wrapping her up for the trip to hospital. This is where the story takes a twist. The real estate agent came driving along with some clients on board. Keeping in mind that we usually only get about half a dozen cars a day on that road, the coincidence was fairly amazing. It became downright eerie when the man in the back said "Can I be of any help? I'm a Doctor." We of course immediately gave him control, and Claire was wrapped and ready to go. Afterwards, the Doctor looked at me and said "I know you." We spent 5 minutes trying to figure out where from, and sort of settled on my 3 year stint on TV as the Crime Stoppers spokesman. As he was about to leave I asked his name, and he said "Allan Watts." I am not caught speechless very often, but I was floored. This is the same Doctor who has been treating my Mom's Alzheimer's for the last 3 years, and my Dad's cancer for the last 3 months. Unreal, what are the odds? Off they went to hospital, so I got to babysit their dog while they were gone overnight. The bonfire was a beaut, about 10 feet across. When I went out to check on it, there were two deer standing right at the edge of the bonfire, nibbling on the unburnt stuff. I was just staring at this sight when my other neighbor, Hippie Jim, came out to see what I was doing. I pointed out this amazing sight, and Jim said "Yes, they like their greens well done" and carried on. Not bad for the initial visit to Slavery Island 2004. Arranged for a huge cedar on the bank to have an accident, and the view has improved greatly. That sucker was about 5 feet across at the base, and for once I used my noodle and had a pro do it for me. Best 10 bucks I ever spent. Where was he when I needed the outhouse though? And they say there's never a COP around when you want one. I did manage to get in a phone call to Steve on Sunday, and had the pleasure of talking to Lynn, Doug, and Peter as well. Lynn, sorry our visit at Vancouver Airport didn't work out, hopefully there will be another chance one day. In conclusion, I expect to be a wealthy man shortly. I figured with all the coincidences involving Claire's injury etc. that the karma was strong, and my luck was holding. Therefore, when I left the Island and returned to the bustling fishing village of Lund, the first thing I did was buy a couple of lottery tickets. Just have to wait a few hours for the numbers to kick in. ================= Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 12:18:28 -0400 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: bdangelo@aol.com Subject: Great story Josh Hi gang, Josh, what a tremendous experience! True, the BoSox won in a blowout but I would've had fun anyway. Afterwards we went to a bar for food that was cheaper than at the park. The place was crawling with nice looking women too! They were all over Ed, especially some drunk cutie from Wyoming. She didn't seem to notice me at all. I thought "fat and bald" had made a comeback among the ladies but apparently I'm ahead of the curve. Afterwards, the trouble started. My engine quickly overheated, before I could even drive Ken back to his car on the opposite side of the stadium. Lucky for me that Ken and Mac have a clue. After dropping Ken off, my car limped into a gas station around 12:30. I called for tow service. They arrived around 1:10am. The tow guy thought maybe it was just a busted thermometer. I got back to my place $50 poorer and an hour later. Then I called a cab for Mac since I couldn't give him the ride home I had promised. Today I got the repair bill: $700 for a new radiator (including coolant flush) and $200 for a small oil leak detected. Amazing idiot moron that I am, I never noticed some HUGE hole in the radiator. Car is being fixed as we speak. People at work said "oh, you are getting ripped off" "I've done that work on my own car". Maybe people should carry a sign saying "Im about to attempt to be supportive but expect me to fail miserably". So maybe my "feast" period of buying cards that past month is over. Maybe I should "famine" and cancel my plans to go to a large non-sport show (Apr 17), Pittsburg (Apr 23) and Ft Washington (Apr 30). For now, Im going to crawl into a hole and fall asleep. Last nite, being a great example, I did not leave the offce until 10:30 pm and missed the entire Red Wings first playoff game. Around 9:30 one of the other attorney's strolls over and asks me if I had a ticket yet for the game. He informs me 1 of our clients cancelled and I could have 1 if I wanted. I did not go to the game with him, but did make it in time for the 2nd batter. Stayed for the entire game as the Tigers rallied froma 3-0 hole to win 10-6. Tigers are now 4-0. All 4 Tiger starters have victories. They have been winning by such wide margins, they only have 1 save. Amazing for a team that lost 119 games last year. I had a great time, (not as good as Josh of course), but am amazed. My firm's seats are in row 22 almost directly behind home plate. I will probably be able to get tickets on occassion. I was offered the tickets for Easter Sunday, but the game conflicts with the Red Wings and it is still Passover, so I did not/am not eating my usual stadium food. It's definitely low-grade stuff, since the cards are usually: 1) Written on the back ("Bucky" + a number) 2) Have the "Big League Gum" strip trimmed off 3) Have a hole punch in one corner If you have 33 or 34 Goudeys, flip through them, look for Bucky and let me know what numbers you have. Her dream job. So we are moving the family to Vermont this summer. If any of you have any advice about surviving the NE cold/snow...I'm all ears :) Seriously, I have many questions about things I might need to know to prepare for next winter. I'm already looking at housing, so any feedback about what to check for when looking at a house up there would be great. For instance, my first thought was a two-car garage and very short driveway :) Please reply to me off-list if you want to hear my silly questions ;) Also, I look forward to being closer to the NE contingent of OBC. It appears I can catch Amtrak to Montreal, NY, Boston, etc. pretty easily from Poultney. Now for some OBC related stuff. I will be pretty in-active between now and the time I get settled in Vermont. I do have some cards I need to send out to those that have sent me stuff the last few months. I'll be doing that in the next couple weeks. And, I do have some cards/sets I may try to sell via eBay to help with moving expenses, etc. (NOTE: cards *I* purchased, not cards I received via OBC!) Also, I need to get rid of a bunch of stuff, which may include some odd-ball sports stuff that I've accumulated over the years. Oh yeah...please don't send me anything! I'll be trying to *lighten* my load :) I'll keep you posted as things progress. I've actually been pretty quiet on the card front since I hosted a mini OBC gathering a few months back but got back into it in a big way today. I had to miss the last Ft. Washington show (and will miss this upcoming one too) and was none too happy at the time as I had saved up with the hopes of finding a card that had eluded me even at the National last summer but thanks to eBay I finally nailed a 68 Topps 3-D (of Jim Maloney) and at a helluva good price too. Like the Subject line says: I'm psyched about this! I do have a question though-if anyone has a 3-D Maloney, I'm curious if it has a dark background. The one I won appararently has a light background but the item description mentions a dark one exists too. Strange but Topps always did strange things back then. A ramble is ahead so don't say I didn't warn you. :-) Today my wife had to work the late shift at her job so it was my son and I for the day. Our local shopping mall (Macomb Mall for those in the know) was having a 'sports card, coin and comic show this weekend. As it is my wife's birthday tomorrow (Sunday) I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone, we can go to the mall look for a gift for mom/wife and look at the cards and see what we can pick up. Well, out of the13 tables (yes, only 13 tables) 7 have cards, most are just UV stuff and 2 are just wax (ooooppps, they don't use wax any more. Foil packs, my bad). The first table that had some vintage stuff, among all the uv stuff, the owner of the table had a 65 Topps Kaline and a 70 Topps Aaron. Its 2 out of a area that's nothing but new reprints of vintage cards so I ask if those are reprints also and what set did they come from, I get the snide answer, "they're real, what did you think they are?" I ask to look at the Kaline and ask how much he's asking. (NOTE: This card is SO sharp it looks like it was just pulled from a pack a moment ago) He states $40. I hold it under the light he has on his table and notice a jagged cut of the card on the top right, sort of like someone has shaved the edge to enhance it. He asks me if I want it, I say 'No thank you, it looks like something has been done to the card, not saying you did it, it just doesn't look right to me", He jumps at me and says "what? There's nothing wrong with that card, haven't you ever seen a rough cut?" (NOTE: the rest of the card is so smooth, it really doesn't look real) I said well Thanks for letting me look", "I guess you know nothing about vintage cards?" he said. Then began to berate me about my "lack of knowledge". I ignored him and walked off with my son, around the corner I saw another table owner that had a couple binders of some vintage, so I start to look through. (He's a older gentleman) I find a couple 68 Topps game cards I need (like that's hard with my whole filled w/l , LOL) I ask him how much for each (#25-Alley & #23-Allen) he says "$4 each". I hand them back to him and say' "no thank you" and start to walk away and he says "why not?", I reply, "a little higher then I expected to pay", "hey don't you know kid, these are old cards, from the 60's or something" he says. I said" yes, 69 to be exact, they are 69 Topps Game cards" I guess I was a little on edge due to just getting the same treatment from another "table owner". I tell him that those cards don't even book in MINT for that price and try to walk away. I tells me to wait and "he'll show me that they are worth that much, maybe more". He looks it up in the 2004Standard catalog by SCD and see's that they only guide for $1.25 in MINT. So he offers me them for a buck apiece, I think I have given this man enough grief, I have to buy them now. I do. And extend my hand to shake his and thank him for looking it up and that I was sorry for blurting out my response to him. Now after that ramble (I hope your still with me) I just needed to get this off my chest, Why do people who pay the $40 fee to sit at a table and try to sell their "goods" automatically think they are card experts or that the buyer is so uneducated in the hobby I must be a moron! Is it my age? Is it that I don't look like the average 'dad' that goes to card shows or has been involved in the hobby for over 25 years? It just frustrates me to no end. I try to be a quiet card shopper, but when this stuff happens I seem to let it get under my skin. Am I a fool for going to shows thinking I'll have a good time and not be 'looked down on"? Sorry if you have read this far and maybe this doesn't belong being sent to you all. But I have now become a part of a group that I feel so at home with. A sort of 'Brotherhood' that I just want to let you know that I truly am thankful I found you all. I really mean that. Thanks for being my baseball card "leaning post". I really wish I would have been there. I love whenever a seller assumes that since I was born in 1972, it must mean that I have absolutely no knowledge of cards from before about 1978. That's like saying that I can't appreciate the music of Mozart because I wasn't spending the late 1700s hanging around in Vienna. That's ludicrous. Since you're new to the group, a little background: I started collecting at 6 and fell in love with vintage (especially 1950s cards) when I was 11. I also have a passion for the history of the game and the two interests mesh well. I was a seller at weekend shows when I was 17. I have designed a website devoted to vintage cards and write a newsletter about them every three weeks. I have written a short book on the subject and am working on a second. Finally -- as you know -- I belong to an online trading club that is made up of fellow collectors that can answer most any question I can't. Needless to say, I would have loved the challenge of somebody hinting that I don't know my vintage stuff. I try to bring along a few copies of my book and some business cards whenever I go to a show, and I would have had those sellers for lunch. But then again, I generally like to talk to a seller about the game and the hobby before I look to buy from them and that usually helps me to filter out the guys who are more interested in making a buck than advancing the hobby; I have absolutely no use for the former and love to support the latter. That said, there is something that is immediately clear to me as I read about these two sellers. They didn't seem to spend any time with preparation. When I was a seller (and a very small-time one at that), I spent hours making certain that every single card was either priced of was in a box or binder that clearly marked what they would cost. That way, when a prospective buyer looked at my table, he wasn't going to waste time watching me pull out the latest price guide and figure it out. Since I was a collector as well as a seller, I was happy to negotiate a lower price or trade, but it seems those days are long past. To me, a seller who doesn't immediately know the cost of something he placed on his own table is showing himself to be amateur. Please don't stick up for the guy and explain that he can't possibly know the value of every card he puts on the table...that's why he should have taken the time before the show to figure it out. Last year, I met up with OBC's "Guru" Larry Tipton and went to a small show like the one you described. One of the sellers there had a 1951 Bowman Hi # that Larry needed. Discussing a reasonable offer, Larry said he wasn't willing to pay more than 50 cents because the card was low-grade, but I suggested that I'd pay a dollar because it was a Hi #. Larry thought it over and told the seller he'd be happy to pay a dollar for the card. The seller pulled the card off the display stand, turned it over and immediately (in the words of Guru himself) "stuck his nose so deep in his Buckett that I thought he was going to get lost." After some deliberation, the seller came up with a counteroffer. "I'll let you take it for $8" Larry placed the card back on the display stand. The seeler looked indignant. "But it's a $50 card!" If I were the buyer, I'd have explained right there that I don't care if Dr. Beckett says that it's $50 Hi, that price was for a near-mint card and if he bothered to look elsewhere in that same guide, he'd see a notice that condition affects the price and that even $8 was out of line for the card. Then I'd tell him that only an amateur wouldn't have known that. But Larry took the high road and just walked away. But I think there may have been an OBC spirit floating around in the hall. At the next table, I heard a noise. Turning around, I saw that one of that seller's boxes had fallen off the table and there here hundreds of UV cards in top loaders strewn all over the floor. The guy was walking around to pick them up and wasn't happy about it. Scott, don't be afraid to tell a seller that you don't like his attitude. If it causes a buyer or two to leave the table because they don't want to deal with a jerk either, it'll be worth it. A seller may feel that you're obligated to buy something at his price because you happened to breathe the air over his table, but it doesn't work that way. Fortunately, these types of sellers don't stay in the business long, or at least move out of vintage cards because they can't sell the cards at their inflated prices. And...will somebody send Scott an OBC hat? It might help him the next time he stops by a show. Maybe not that show he was talking about, but one of the larger shows in his area. Several years ago when I was just around 20-21 and soon after I completed doing the research on my phillies list I was at a show. I looked like I was 15 in my cap and sunglasses and when I asked to see a card that someone was trying to sell to a dealer friend of mine, the guy said he bet I could not identify the card and would not show it to me. I told him to pull any card out of his box and I would identify the year and maker and acc designation if any. He pulled something like 5 cards (cracker jack, e-101, e-210, t-213, etc.). Afterwards he shook my hand and told me that he will not judge collectors anymore by looks or age. Two years ago, I bought a T-205 Wallace from him real cheap because he remembered me. Dealers here in Los Angeles often ask my opinions at shows about unidentified cards they have. Not many sets I cant identify anymore. Last year, I wrote a newsletter article about the men who have given up the game for war service and spent a few paragraphs discussing what Tillman had done. It's quite a statement that he was the exception rather than the rule. Sadly, I am now forced to go back and update the piece. What happened to Tillman should not in any way diminish the stories of other young men and women who have fallen, but put this into perspective: he was born in 1976 (the Bicentennial year). If anybody tells you that kids who grew up in the 1980s (and the includes me) couldn't be good citizens because we grew up in relative prosperity and were somehow "spoiled," I give you Pat Tillman and thousands of other young Americans who have volunteered to serve...fully realizing that they will serve in harm's way. I served myself for two years and went to Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm at the age of 18. Was I scared of what might happen? Absolutely, but I knew before I signed my enlistment that the job might entail some hazardous duty and accepted that. For all the recent talk of American soldiers dying and how there seems to be no quick, easy way to wrap up the business, keep this in mind: there are no conscripts in the military. Every single man and woman overseas is there by his or her own decision. And from what I see, if these people are our future, we'll be okay. For those who haven't read the article, here's a link to it. It's a great read for students of history (baseball history as well as American): http://www.geocities.com/chrisstufflestreet/archive18.html It's tragic that such a bright light has been extinguished, and unfortunate that the Pat Tillman story -- like that of too many heroes -- must be told posthumously. As always, I pray that our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines can stay out of harm's way and be allowed home as soon as possible...but after their business is finished. Hi All, More enjoyable and successful that I could have imagined. The only regret is not having more time to see more friends and stay with the family. Next time I'll try to do better. But to finally meet some of my very good buddies in OBC was a super treat and moments that I'll cherish forever. Now I can add "OBCers I've Met" to my wantlist. I returned home on a couple of down notes. I had entered my travels on what happened when and where in my PC on drafted emails, but drat it, lost it twice when connecting to the Internet while on the road with my laptop. I still haven't figured out what went wrong there. I just hope I can still recollect it all and get the events and thanks correct now. It was definitely a whirlwind time. Also I developed some food poisoning on the plane ride home. The last few days since I got home have been literally miserable and haven't spent much time too far from the bathroom. But I've turned the corner there now. Maybe is was all that "diet change" eating those "foreign" foods. Soft pretzels, hoagies, Philly cheese-steaks, etc. that did it :-) I confess to ruining my dieabetic diet, but they were good! Hey, once every 10 years can't hurt? So it's going to take me awhile to recompose all this stuff, sorry for the lateness. Got to my destination hotel in Washington DC at about 3AM on Sunday morning, April 4 having spent about 22+ hours in transit. There was an arranged meeting that day at Steve's place and Trader Doug was staying in the same hotel. I had put a call in for 7am but apparently slept right through it. Can't understand why. Get a call at 8:30am from Doug to hustle it up. Get downstairs and meet my first OBCer who promptly greets me in the OBC way "here's a little something for you" and "Hi, I'm Doug". As if I didn't know. Of course I do the same. But I look at the clock on the wall and it says it's almost 10am. Huh? Well just my luck I come in on the night that you go off daylight savings time and I lose an additional hour of sleep. Somehow it didn't matter at that point since I was reveling in my first OBC meeting and we were off to Steve's place. Steve called while we were leaving to "remind" us we were late. Yeah! Arrive at Rittenberg Palace and greet the Great One hisself. Also it was great to meet Peter Mead for the first time. Peter also had some things for me. We've all said it before, but it's so true now that I've experienced it. When you meet one of your buddies in person for the first time, it's like you've known them so well for years that it's a natural thing and you don't feel the awkwardness of meeting a stranger. I was right at home, as it should be. I also dumped off the 50 OBC hats that we had made in the Philippines and I dragged halfway around the world. The greetings and euphoria settled on, I opened the envelope Doug had given me. Wow, a 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson. My birthyear set and also very ironic that Jackie broke into the majors that year on the day I was born, April 15. Thanks Doug for an extra-special card. Then Steve hands me an envelope and some other items. And I'm sorry here if I get this mixed up, which I'm sure to do. But the envelope was from OBC with a note about it being a little early for my birthday but this gift is from a "large number of my good friends in OBC". Holy Batman! A 62 Mantle All-Star, 52 hi number, and a couple of great vintage Aaron cards, 1960 Nu-Card HiLites & 1964 Topps Stand-up, both in really great condition. Hey, that can't be from OBC :-) And there is a promise of more to come. Wow, it's too much already. That's the last regular Mantle card I needed, besides of the course, the one I'll never get probably. Just as I'm reveling in this wonderful bounty my good friends have bestowed on me, there's a phone call. It's the Constable himself, the mastermind of this event as it turns out. Grant told me how he had anticipated our meeting in Vancouver airport but when that fell through, he arranged to have the gifts presented by Steve. Thanks so much Grant, Steve and all the others for making my birthday so very special on a number of fronts this year. Couldn't think of a better way to spend it. Steve also gave me some other great Hank items and a 51 Topps Redback. He also gave me a very Tipton 65 Topps Larry Miller, with a comment to the effect "You should start a collection of all players named Miller". Thanks, but don't think so Steve, nice try. Peter managed to find a 51 Topps Redback and a tough Blue Back. Peter also gave me a Kelloggs box from the early 90's that he had purchased in the store and ate the cereal a long time ago (I hope so). But the back of the box had a Baseball Greats stand-up of my hero Hank. Thanks Peter for the really great additions. A few minutes later Terry Dietrick came by and was great to meet another OBCer. Greetings and pleasantries exchanged. And shortly after that Andy Cook arrived. Hey, we were getting like flies! Andy found me a super 52 hi that was definitely an upgrade. It was a little trimmed but nothing like the "trimmed down to the size of a 49/50 Bowman" one that I had. Now I can read the whole card back ;-) Thanks Andy! Steve managed to take all my 75-79 dupes for his "umteenth" sets he was building. I had brought all my dupes with me in the hopes of not taking any back home, so this was a good start. The time at Steve's was too short, had to get back to the hotel for a social engagement and Doug had to catch a plane and gave me a ride back. But before we left, there was one other little item. Two tickets for me and my son Hank to attend the Orioles/Red Sox game on Wednesday at Camden Yards. Yes!!! But it was truly great to have been to Steve's and met so many of my great friends. I didn't get near enough into Steve's treasures as I had wanted to. And boy does he have a lot. Back at the hotel, as I was getting ready for my social evening, my son Hank arrived. He had lost his way hours earlier and finally caught up to me. He had carried an item he had been holding for almost a year. It was sent by Bama to him to hold for me because it was too big to mail to me. Now one of the most prized possessions I have. An Autographed Hank Aaron model H&B 34" Louisville Slugger. Yahoo! Bama, this is so great to finally have this item in my collection. The wait was definitely worth it. Can't ever express how much I appreciate this item. He probably never did hold it, but it's nice to think he may have. My next adventure in OBC was THE GAME! This had been pre-arranged by our Balmore connection, Ed Schott. Ed had told me prior that he needed my support with him for the O's since we were surrounded by Sox fans. How could that be in Baltimore? Hank had a car, so after my Navy duties were done on Wednesday afternoon, we took off for Camden Yards. We knew we would be a little late and I had told Ed to expect us by the 2nd inning hopefully. We got there and had to park outside the Stadium. As we were walking to the park, we passed a sports bar that had the game on the loudspeakers and the Sox had just scored their 7th run in the top of the 2nd!! Yikes, the game was over already? Fortunately our arrival halted the bleeding for the O's. We get to our seats and of course received the directions to our section with "Hey Lynn over here!!!" There was Ed, resplendent in orange. I didn't have to be introduced to Ken or Howard or Mac or Steve again, just knew who they were! Howard had driven from Philly, and had also brought along his son Chip who lives in nearby Annapolis. Ken was taking a break from the tables in Atlantic City (I think he saved money by coming to the game). Ed handed me a fistful of cards of Dave Winfield, my second favorite player of all-time. Ed had read my bio, very perceptive. Of course, later I discover there's a great Superstar card "inserted" in the pack of Mick & Hank! Ed also handed me an envelope from Keith Summers stuffed with goodies. Thanks Keith for making the "extra effort". Howard had some great Hank Aaron items again. Mac gave me a great looking 52 hi of Pirate Jack Merson. I didn't know there were still cards in this series that had all the paper, no marks or tears on them. Thanks very much Mac (I'm still waiting by the way). Ken gave me the most memorable piece of all, my very own "OBC autographed" baseball to commemmorate the event. This along with my ticket stub will find a prominent place here in the Miller home. The game became unenventful after that point, a few more runs were scored but who cared. One comment though. I could see Ed's point. What the hey were all these Red Sox fans doing in Camden Yards? Jeez, everytime the Sox did something there was this BIG WAVE ALL AROUND THE STADIUM. Orioles fans definitely seemed to be in the minority. After the game, we leisurely walked along talking and stopped to take a group photo at the statue of "The Babe". Who has that so they can send me one? Howard and Chip had to leave, was great to see them and I had spoken to Howard about getting together when I was in Philly. Somehow that never happened and I'm sorry Howard that it didn't. The rest of us stopped at that local sports bar and had something to eat and talked some more for awhile. Was great, including the interruptions by "Montana Mary" who just had to let us know she didn't have a care in the world. I think she was taken a little with Ed, that beard thing I guess :-) Well we all had to depart too soon and Hank and I had to make our way back to the hotel for my next day's work on the Navy Retiree Council. Hank had a real blast with you guys. Thanks for making him feel right a home. Oh yeah, the hats. Turns out Steve forgot to bring them to give to Ken to take home. So I volunteered to go back to Steve's place the following night to retrieve them and take them with me on my next OBC meeting in Boston in a few days. No Problem! So naturally the next evening after the Council meeting, Hank and I headed over to Steve's. Hank and I had a super time looking at all the cards Steve had. Hank was particularly impressed with the early century non-sport collection. Steve tried to convince me again to start some new sets, almost had me when he offered me a small starter set of 70 Topps Supers. But I begged off. His collection is really something. My wife should see his place, then maybe she wouldn't give me such a hard time about my little room :-D Again the time was too short. But being with Steve for a few times was a tremendous event in itself. The end of the week came quickly and my business was wrapped up with the Navy. Hank had to return to Norfolk to take a college exam Friday morning. I rented a car and drove to Norfolk to meet him and my other son Jeff. We picked him up and Saturday morning headed for my sister's house in Philly. My sister is so special. Spent the rest of the weekend with her and her husband Chris and had a great home-cooked Easter meal. Sis, I think I still feel stuffed. The boys had to return to Norfolk that afternoon for duty the next day. Sure missed them right away. This was the first time I have met my brother-in-law and I was truly grateful. He is such a great guy and what he is doing for my family is remarkable. I called Howard about the meeting on Monday but he wasn't at home, missed that opportunity. Would have loved to meet the Lovely Betsy and see his world-reknowned collection. Monday afternoon hopped on a plane to Boston and a couple of hours later was met by Ken at the airport. We quickly dashed to his place to drop of the hats (mission finally accomplished there). He hands me a couple of items. Two of these plastic cases with a couple of the contest cards for the 57 Topps set that have been on my list. Thanks a ton Ken! Also he gave me an envelope from my OBC Santa Sal Domino. Sal's package never arrived for Christmas, USPS gremlins at work again. But Sal more than made up for the loss with a terrific looking 51 Topps Redback of Boston's favorite Dimaggio, Dom. Thanks Sal for the great hit! Ken took a quick few minutes to fish through my 69's and found a few upgrades for his 2nd set. While he was doing that I was losing myself in his closet of cards. Uh oh, gadzooks, the Holy Grail of card collecting! The very first, live sighting by me of a 52 Mantle. What a thrill that was, holding one for the first time. But alas Ken wasn't parting with him, not even for all the dupes I brought with me. We were finally finished there and it was off to Bob Donaldson's place. We find the beautiful Donaldson Manor. Whereupon we meet up with the master of the house Bob. Spike is there also. We all gather in Bob's room in the renovated rec room downstairs. Great stuff all over the walls and on the bookshevles. Bob hands me a book on Hank Aaron that I didn't previously have and says it's mine now. Thanks very much Bob. Bob has a great little collection of bats also. Hey, what a great idea Bob, take a picture of the "OBC Lumber Gang". This is history in the making! Of course I met my first OBC wife, the lovely Chris, and their children. We talk some more but again, not much time for I have another couple of errands to do. So we sadly said goodbye and Bob was kind enough to drive me to Roberta Redpath's house. What a wonderful person she is, just as I had imagined. Certainly it was a somber moment, but also a very joyful one to finally meet her and talk about Rick. She was so kind to indulge Bob and I even though we could see that the pain was still there. But this was just something I had to do, Rick was such a great friend. Was great meeting the children Ian and Casey too. Ian is quite an accomplished pianist and gave us a brief recital, very impressive. But my time with them was limited also since I had another meeting scheduled with my very dear friend Ron Kingsbury. Ron was one of the first really good friends I found in OBC and we've kept pretty much in constant contact since he life OBC a couple of years ago. He is one of the people I really wanted most to meet in addition to some of my other great OBC friends on my trip. I called Ron from Roberta's house and he picked me up. Ron was kind enough to say a few words to Roberta before we left. I said goodbye to Bob and thanked him for all his kindness too in accompanying me. It did help. Ron and I headed off to a wonderful dinner at a really great restaurant and got to know each other a little better. What a guy! Bigger in life that I had imagined. We then went to his really beautiful home and I met his very lovely bride Andrea whom I've also come to know well over the past few years. But the hour was already late and I didn't have time to spend with Andrea that I really wanted to. So Ron and I adjourned to his "card room" to just talk and look and look and look at some really great cards and talk some more. Ron is a huge Ted Williams fan and there's stuff of "The Splendid Splinter" everywhere. Ron's collection is really something to marvel at. A very comphensive and extremely impressive collection. I had been aware from early on that his condition requirements were above, way above, the rest of us. Wow is an understatement! Some of his old "star cards" look better than some of the UV stuff. It was so grand to finally sit down in person and talk to such an old friend, just like I did with all the other good friends I met on the trip. But I had to catch a red-eye flight back to Philly since I was leaving that next day for my trip back home. Ron retired and I went off the the airport, albeit so very reluctantly. But with a promise to meet again next year for sure. It's great to have had the opportunity to finally catch up with my family and to meet so many good friends, but also sad that there wasn't a whole lot of time to spend with all of you. I sure hope I haven't left anyone or anything out of this. If I have, my aplogies. It was a very frantic 10 days but a time I will never forget. Thank all of you! For his sacrifice, Pat Tillman should be given a spot in the Football Hall of Fame. Even if he isn't given a bust, the NFL should take the step to let the fans understand why Tillman is a hero. He may not have been around long enough to have earned himself a spot in the HOF, but it would be great to explain to fans that there are things more important than the game. Pat Tillman understood that, walked away from the field and eventually gave everything he had because he felt it was the right thing to do. He refused to be given any special attention during his training and served as Sgt. Tillman, not "former Arizona Cardinal/NFL safety" Tillman. He had the same values that made players like Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Rocky Bleier stand out from their contemporaries, and it would be a tragedy to forget Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. I've been to this card show before: I used to attend occasionally until I realized that I never bought much of anything, so I stopped going altogether. Figuring I was passing right by it and that I haven't been in a couple of years I decided to give it a try. Admission was the obligatory $2. As I walk in, one fellow who I've seen at other shows has tables filed with vintage cards. That's the good news...the bad news is that I know how the guy operates. I spot a couple of cards I'm remotely interested in and ask for a price check. Out comes the Buckett and he's rifling through it to find the card's "value." After a few minutes I decided to not waste any more time at this table and move on. There were other tables with vintage stuff, but nothing in the way of OBC material, though I do get a mild chuckle when I see a 1969 Topps Bobby Bonds RC with a $30 tag on it. After about 20 minutes of wandering around, I throw in the towel and reinforce my mental note about why I stopped going to this show in the first place. The happy ending? Well...I bought nothing so cash stayed in my own pocket Happy Collecting! ================= Date: Sun, 25 Apr 2004 22:22:11 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "jimbo777777" Subject: 1976 Kelloggs Got a couple of lots in from ebay this week, knoncking my 1976 Kelloggs list down to one: Don Gullett, #3. I don't have alot of time to write this , but if I wait I will only forget more than I have . Friday night I amde my way out after picking up the Fuge and Schottzy . We found ouraselves at the La Quinta at about nine. I tried to call Cap with no success. We went to a local watering hole for a quick refreshment and returned to the hotel for a swap before bed. Went to the Robert Morris show inthe morning. Was there til about 3 or so , just after Terry and Steve showed up , so we got to chat for few before heading to the hotel once again. Washed up a bit , then Terry , his son Adam and granddaughter Kim came buy for some card trading. Kent came by and we headed for Denny's for dinner andSteve caught up to us a bit later . More card trading at Dennys before going to the Pirates game. Terry reserved us some great seats , just 5 rows from the field, third base side. Excellent ballpart , good game and excellentcompany. We headed out after the game and Steve stayed with Ed, Richard and myself. Went back to the show for a few hours before heading home. I don't remember all the card sI got from who. I keep telling myself to write it down when I get cards , butr I guess I am only fooling myself. I know that Steve finished my Star Wars sticker set. Terry gave me some 1971 Topps baseball, Kent handed me an envelope with some great newer cards I needed , and a '68 game card, also handed me a box of mostly 60's football cards. Ed let me go through his dupes box and I pulled a nice handful out . Thanks for all the great cards and even better company. Great trip and hope all can do it again next year. ================= To: "Ramblings" Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 21:17:31 -0400 From: "Steve Rittenberg" Subject: Pittsburgh thanks! This is a combined show report & thanks. Thanks to all who I got to see at the spring Pittsburgh show last weekend. Attendees included Terry Dietrick (provider of 1966 Braves card), Ed Schott (provider of lots of 1975s plus other goodies from his dupes including a 72 Kelloggs Oliva), Matt-man (provider of some Star Wars nose bleeders and Richard (Fugitive) Kimball who helped me clean out some of the clutter from my non-sport dupes. As I expected, I got lost getting to the show. I was VERY lost last year. This year I was only somewhat lost thanks to Terry's directions and an atlas on the front side. My first call to infone did not provide any help. I showed up at the show at 2pm Saturday, an all-time record for me (in terms of lateness). It was actually a productive day for me. I found 6 or 7 of the '55 Bowmans I needed, a pile of 68 FB at 10% plus a white back Dodgers team card. The best table for me was at a hockey dealer. He'll sell his beaters from the 50s or early 60s for just a buck so I was all over it and ended up with 10-15 hits to my Parkie wantlist. I asked him about the upcoming show and he said he's the first guy you see when you walk in. And I learned something interesting -- all his cards are pre-priced. I wondered what he does up in Canada since Canuck-bucks are worth so much less. Well, up in Canada, you can pay in Canadian dollars (worth about 30% less than US dollars). I did think about putting the cards back and hoping that Mike Rich would get them for me in Toronto at a hefty discount but I decided that would be foolish. And in the end, he took about 15% off anyway so I had no The other great dealer there was J.D. Heckathorn. He's becoming well-known to OBCers via the National and Sportsfest in Chicago. He has a couple of LARGE boxes of commons where every card is 10% of book. Its easy to go nuts though I didn't find any in there I could use. I did get a few of his others though, including the Dodgers team card. And now I will make a big plug for him -- he's willing to host (or at least chip in for) our swap at the National. I need to talk to Ken about what makes most sense but right now I think that all he needs in exchange is some good advertising and directions to his table at the National. He also wants an OBC hat. I've thought that it might make sense for us to look into "OBC Friendly" buttons for dealers. Maybe a large 5" button that could be worn or displayed prominently at a table would be a signal that this is a guy you should go and see. I haven't yet looked into the cost of making some buttons but I don't expect it to be expensive. And I thought we could even sell the buttons at our cost to dealers. I think most of them would chip in the $5 or so in exchange for the publicity. Its an idea I hope to take up with the AC shortly once I do my homework. If anyone has thoughts/ideas/suggestions, let me know. Anyway, back to the weekend report. By 4 or 5pm, all of OBC had left the show except me! The other guys were swapping at the local La Quinta. When I finally finished for the day, I met them at Denny's next door. Here we were joined by Kent Montgomery, Terry's son Adam and GRANDDAUGHTER (!) Kim. It was Kim's birthday. Her present was a trip to the baseball game. My gift from Kent was a pile of '75s. Plus I got a cool TCMA card of Ted Williams from Ed. After a quick bite, we hurried over to PNC park to see P'burg play Cincinnati. I drove with Kent which was lucky for me as we had not before. Its amazing but true -- in OBC you have not met previously but when you do, you are instant friends. I strongly encourage OBCers to get together whenever possible. It really strengthens the ties in the group. Unfortunately, PNC Park did not do a good job that night. We had some "will call" tickets. After being told we could wait in any of the crowded lines, we waited 20 minutes (1 or 2 innings worth), then learned we had to walk to the other side of the park to get our tickets. Following that, we had some major issues with accessibility to the park. I was shocked that someone with limited mobility had to walk halfway around the park just to get in. An ice cold beer and the best seats ever calmed me a bit. The tickets that Terry got were just 6 rows behind the tarp on the third base line. AMAZING! The coolest part was seeing defensive plays. We had a great view of each time trying to turn two. Plus we got to hear Ken Griffey Jr receive his boos each turn at bat. The game itself was ok, if sloppy. Pittsburgh lost 9-7. I felt like there were too many walks and pitching changes to really pull me into the action. Afterwards, I ended up back at LaQuinta, where I accepted cards from Fuge, Matt and Ed. They also let me take a hunk of floor for sleeping purposes. In exchange, I snored like a bear. Sunday morning, I headed back to the show and tried to help the other guys find stuff. It wasn't very successful. And I found very little from my list as well. The best part was seeing the pizza that was delivered from across the street. By the time I left the show at 1:30, I had decided to go straight to the pizza place and order a pie for the ride home. Eating pizza while driving can be difficult but I managed. It felt like a long weekend but seeing OBCers always makes it worthwhile. ================= To: "Ramblings \(OBC\)" Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 22:11:44 -0700 From: "Geordie Calvert" Subject: another humorous evilBay auction This one is getting 300 hits a second (or thereabouts) and it's been closedfor several hours. Washington show this weekend, I thought I would give you the 411 (information) on one of my Midwest dealers who is making the trek out there for the first time. Jim Renik, one of the owners of High-Five (or is it Hi-five -- never really sure which), will be bringing his vintage singles -- 50s and 60s -- with a wide-range of grades, among a few other goodies. I have filled a large number of my holes from his stash, and a large number of holes in many of your collections as well. His prices are pretty fair on the whole, and he will bargain a little on a groups of cards. If you are at the show, stop by and say hello. Be happy, John Scott Gray ================= Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2004 13:54:26 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "larrygersh" Subject: Looking for VO4 Roomies Hey gang, Just made my reservation for my first OBC Vegas trip.
