Washington report and thanks Hi all, Just got back home and settled in from my weekend in Philly. I went down there with the usual prospects of finding nothing and returned with the usual result of having spent too much. As a result, I have added another football set to my list and officially declared myself insane. No, not because of the football set - although many would question my sanity for going after the 1965 Topps set, (tallboys) which has a billion short prints and the Namath RC in it... although I am a good ways along with it now. My other main purchases included a couple dozen hits to my 1959 Fleer set (#2 - but that doesn't make me crazy either). While roaming the aisles, I stumbled across a pile of Red Man cards at one table. Since I'm now collecting all the sets besides 1952 (which I completed), I took a quick look at the stack. Alas, most of them were from the aforementioned 1952 set, but there were a few stars in the pile and a couple other years too. I asked the dealer what the whole stack might cost and he said to make an offer. After counting 47 cards, I offered roughly $3 each for the lot - he countered with $4 or so per card and the deal was done. Why did I agree? Because there's variations in all the Red Man sets... heaven help me. (Sal, this could be you in a few years ) So my new wantlist will include an expiration date for the offer on the back of the Red Man cards... at least for the 1952 set for now. There might be a little sanity left in me yet - at least until I come upon another pile of Red Man cards at some future show. I'm only doing the untabbed set - for monetary reasons, so a 208 card master set is not in the works (see Mike Rich, who is clearly out of his mind for that - lol). I have a card to swap for almost all the cards in the set if you have any you're willing to trade to help fill my binder (which now resides in a padded room). This e-mail is a little tardy since I had to type it with a pencil sticking out of my mouth - I just can't seem to get this sweater with the long sleeves off. Anyway, a quick thank you out to Steve Rittenberg, who has tirelessly looked for cards on my list which I'm just too lazy to go through the bargain boxes in search of. Notables crossed off the list this weekend include high number 1964 Topps cards of Kaat and Maz, plus a pair of 74-75 hoop cards from my one remaining non-variation set including a Bobby Jones RC and a SCP high number hit to my (ahem, second) 1960 Leaf set. THANKS STEVE!! It was great meeting up with OBC'ers over the course of the weekend, since it not only kept me away from spending more money at the tables, but it's always great to just relax and shoot the breeze with like-minded individuals (although probably none of them have totally lost it like I have - YET). Thanks also to Spike, Steve, Rob, Tim, Howard, Fuge, Matt, Jason and Peter (hope I didn't leave anyone out, but if I did, it's not my fault because I've lost my mind). Special kudos to Joe Greco, who not only made a brief appearnace at the show, but put up with me yet again for the weekend. I'm now off to keep myself busy and not think about all the different versions of sets that aren't on my list. I also got Sparky Lyle's book (The Year I Owned the Yankees) for .99 plus shipping. Can't beat that! Sure wish I could have made Fort Washington this weekend, but I have a room in sheetrock shambles. I just put the 1967Ts together and should have that posted by 2006. EEK, I think I'm going to need some counseling for this variation quest. And Ken, I'll send you a scan of that 68 McCormick card sometime just to make you drool LOL. Toughest part of these variations for me has been those 71s with the red and orange helmets. You see, I have a color blindness to shades of red and green, so all the helmets look purple to me . And the damn 73 Mgr cards will drive anyone to drink! Has anyone checked the Cubs sched to see if they are home during the National? Would rather hit Wrigley than see the W. Sox. I think the term "Morganti-esque" should be in the OBC dictionary for long ramblings like this one. I used to write em like that, glad I wasn't attached with the moniker :-). Does Secret Santa need any help? I hope to hit the card shops this week to find something, but I don't know for who yet. Keith, the samples really look good for PTC. You've really busted your ass on this one. I don't envy all the work you've put into it. The cards will get here when they get here. Just make sure there aren't any damn color variations! Chris, my pleasure helping you out with Johnny Hustle. His prices are a little high, but he does have a nice assortment of stuff for sure. Well that about covers things for now. Hopefully I can get these stacks of cards in the mail this weekend. Remember this is the OBC time of year. The spirit of this group year round really makes for what the holidays are supposed to be about. Give a kid a pack of baseball cards, his/her face will light up! ================= Date: Tue, 7 Dec 2004 18:40:40 -0800 (PST) To: ChicoD1@aol.com, obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Chris Stufflestreet Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Books and Variations and assorted thoughts --- ChicoD1@aol.com wrote: > Has anyone checked the Cubs sched to see if they are > home during the > National? I used to write em like > that, glad I wasn't attached > with the moniker :-). Yeah, but "Domino effect" has an entirely different meaning altogether...I'm not sure if that would have stuck anyway. And I really need to be quiet about that myself...with some of the feature-length epistles I've filed on the servers, I'm likely to get tagged for my own verbosity (for those of you who didn't take the SAT...that means I'm somewhat long-winded when I write). Next, I have started my final round of "kid" sets. I need 1979 and 1977 and my children's collections are done. Well, predictably, Canada Post has started their rotating strikes, which just coincidentally seem to happen every year about this time. Maybe they need more time to shop? On another note, got a surprise phone call from a chap I have met at a couple of "card shows" that we occasionally get up here. He is arranging for about a dozen guys to meet up this Saturday, with everyone to bring their dupes, for a good old-fashioned swapfest. Best news is that the place he has chosen is only about 5 blocks from home. When he was on the phone last night, he made my day, by saying "Don't bring anything shiny, nobody that I am inviting will want it." Tiger Dave might be coming too, he is in a buying mood. Too bad I ain't selling. Cool! Report to follow. ================= Date: Thu, 9 Dec 2004 19:00:34 EST To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OCTraders@yahoogroups.com, From: biggies@aol.com Subject: 79 and 77 update after a quick helpful start Hi cardboardians, Thanks to a handful of quick x-mas helpers I am off to a qgood start. Bonds on the other hand.....; http://www.nydailynews.com/12-08-2004/sports/baseball/story/259998p-222683c.html Bonds market down, not out BY MICHAEL O'KEEFFE DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Barry Bonds is the center of the biggest sports scandal in history, a key figure in a federal investigation who may yet face criminal charges for his role in the BALCO case. He's been slammed by fans from Florida to Seattle as a drug-enhanced cheat; his leaked grand jury testimony prompted Sen.John McCain to threaten congressional intervention into baseball's affairs. In the middle of that firestorm, Bonds still plans to hawk autographs to high rollers in New York City this weekend. Organizers say Bonds is expected to attend The Ultimate Event, the high-end fan fest featuring the Giants slugger and Alex Rodriguez. As the Daily News reported last month, tickets for a meet-and-greet cocktail party Friday night with Bonds and A-Rod at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square - fans will have the opportunity to ask the players questions and snap photos with the stars - cost $7,500. Entry to Saturday's autograph session at the 40/40 Club will set back collectors $1,050. But neither steep admission fees nor the steroid scandal have cooled collectors' enthusiasm for the event. About 80 of the 100 available tickets for Friday's cocktail party have been sold, and Scot Monette - president of AROD Authenticated, the Florida company that sells Rodriguez memorabilia and is one of the organizers - expects full capacity for Saturday's autograph session, too. "These guys will go down as two of the very best to play the game," says Denver businessman Vince Donahue, a memorabilia collector who plans to attend the cocktail party. "This whole thing around Barry will eventually shake itself out. He'll still go down in history as a phenomenal baseball "I try not to prejudge people. Only Barry Bonds knows what he did and didn't do," Donahue adds. "It's probably difficult to make the leap that he didn't know what he was taking. But for me, there's no question he would be hitting the same amount of home runs as he is hitting. The hand-eye coordination is still there." Fans who fork over $7,500 for Friday's cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and question-and-answer session won't be completely in the hole. They'll receive a gift bag full of goodies Monette estimates are worth more than $4,000, including a video game, a bottle of wine, cigars and a watch created just for The Ultimate Event. Many of the items may wind up on eBay or other Internet auctions. Rodriguez, meanwhile, will donate his share of the proceeds to the Boys & Girls Club of America. But Bonds isn't planning to share his portion of the profits. Bernstein told Sports Illustrated last month that the event "is squarely in the for-profit section of Barry's portfolio." ================= To: , , Date: Fri, 10 Dec 2004 15:07:15 -0500 From: "Bob Donaldson" Subject: RE: [OBC-Ramblings] $200 for a 71 high number? I have erred and am recalcitrant. It has been brought to my attention that have mistakenly thanked an outside member through the OBC ramblings email. This is wrong and while I thought this member was an OBC member, I was wrong. Being wrong and making an error is no excuse. I have also offered post 1980 items to members. Even though these items were available to anyone free of obligation, and in the interest of someone perhaps needing them for their children et al. It was wrong. The rules clearly state that the ramblings communications will be confined to 1980 or earlier. Personally I am interested mostly in pre war items at this time, but I thought that disposing of these sets by giving them to someone in need was better than throwing them away. I was wrong. please know that I will not give up the names of those that responded with interest in these items for fear of Moving forward I vow to adhere to any and all rules of conduct regardless of their conflict with reason. Generally the broken rules seem to be simple human error that create embarrassment and a sense of shame when pointed out by others. My experience of OBC is that we are caring and sensitive people. We feel what we feel intensely. While our sensitivity to others needs is a cornerstone of our group, that same sensitivity makes us susceptible to hurt feelings. It might be helpful if we could try to assure that each member was being given the same basic information regarding our rules. While the Rules of Conduct page is available to us all, little reminders might not hurt. Perhaps some guidelines for mentors would be helpful including information regarding the role of a mentor? I've been a member for a few years now, and I'm not sure I would be able to remember all of the nuances of our group and provide that for a new member off the top. Perhaps we could incorporate a reminder of the server rules at the bottom of the Members Directory where the various servers are described? Criticism, no matter how diplomatically stated, is generally difficult to receive. I think it would be easier to receive from a mentor then from another group member. Perhaps we could include the mentors name on the Directory as well, and individuals or the OBCAC could go through him to convey any breech? As with most if not all of us in OBC, I dislike and am uncomfortable with conflict. While it is unrealistic to avoid it totally, I think we should make every effort to minimize it. The opinions expressed above are mine alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of OBC and or the OBCAC. That being said, if there are things people don't like, bring it up. That's why we have an OBCAC to vote on those things. If the membership doesn't bring up any problems or issues, the AC tends not to invent new ones, so we pretty much get the status quo. I think you make some good points about mentoring, which was instituted to help guide new members along. Geordie has been putting that info in the Directory for new members, but it would be harder to find out who the older members had as a mentor. If anyone wants to volunteer any mentor info to Geordie, I'm sure he would be glad to put it in the Directory. My collection is housed in the room we call my "study." I do some of my academic writing on the computer in this room, and so the room has to be clear enough for me to be able to work. Baseball and baseball cards are one of several hobbies that fill the room. I have one bookcase filled with books about baseball. Another bookcase (that has books on philosophy, science, theology, and pseudoscience) has one shelf on which I have my Topps sets in binders, from 1960 through 1970. The rest of the collection is stored in boxes--in the closet, on book shelves, under chairs. I am a chess master (although I haven't played in a tournament for several years), and so I have a bookcase with chess books (and a few books on military history). I have four bookshelves on the wall, on which are arranged my collection of mystery novels, with various articles in front of many books--Star Trek figures, baseball cards, and a set of postcards from the Houdini Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin (I used to be a member of the Society of American Magicians in the 1980s). I don't have too much on the walls--a pennant from the Brewers' 1982 World Series year and a few chess plaques. I recently picked up a frame for baseball cards, which I plan to use to display 20 or so autographed cards. My wife says that she has given up on the room and that I can arrange the room however I want. So, basically it is a mess, devoted to work and several hobbies. Good topic! OK, it's a complete mess. I constantly try to "organize" my stuff, but as soon as I get half-way done, I change my mind and start over. This has been going on for about 30 years. I day I'll get it organized just the way I want it ( yeah right!). At the moment, I have a big 4 shelf locked cabinet in my bedroom that houses lots of binders of sets & partial sets. On the top of that are more binders, and the walls are lined with more binders of complete sets. There are also scads of card boxes of varying sizes strewn about. My Jean Beliveau auto'd skates and Beliveau and Mike Bossy auto'd sticks are in the closet. 3 big boxes on the floor are packed with miscellaneous stuff, with more bits and pieces on top of those. There is also a bookcase packed with sports books. That's the upstairs. The computer is downstairs, and that's where in process stuff goes. My kids are always on my case about how messy it is there (shouldn't it be the other way around????) In the dining room, I have a curio cabinet packed with odd sized stuff and other cool items. In one of the cabinets under a book shelf is my football cards collection. On the walls are a couple of pictures - a Ted Williams print from Upper Deck, and an auto'd painting of Paul Henderson's series ending goal in the '72 Canada/Russia series. I also have an original print of Ken Danby's The Goalie that I haven't got around to framing yet (I just got that one - 30 years ago). Dupes are in a dresser in my kid's bedroom closet. In addition, piled on top of another bookcase is a portfolio book with about a dozen vintage Louisville Slugger and other bat posters and some duplicates, along with some Baseball Magazine Supplements and an original Babe Ruth Athletic Underwear sign. At my office I have housed my antique bat collection of about 60 or so bats dating from around 1860 to around 1945, along with some vintage bubble gum boxes and advertising signs, mostly of cigarette and tobacco products. Of the two places, my office is far and away the neatest, the the card collection being stuck wherever there is room. The wife thinks all this is midly amusing and more than a bit compulsive. My cards are currently stored in the closet in my room... well, most of them anyway. The completed sets are in binders stacked on shelves that Dad built specifically for them and there's more binders on the floor in the closet. The sets I'm working on and most of the 'good' dupes are scattered about the floor and two desks in my room. The computer occupies a small corner of one of the desks, so I don't have to keep running up and down the stairs like when I first joined OBC! The remainder of the closet is filled with boxes of 1980's junk which may never see the light of day at the rate I'm "organizing" them. (Sorting through six thousand 1985 Topps commons isn't my idea of a good time.) I live in a three bedroom house that I'm buying from my parents (over the next 13 more years.) THEY moved out on ME - to NH when Dad retired about five years ago... although he's probably working more now than he ever did before. The middle bedroom (which used to be theirs) is almost completely empty now, save for the old computer. I could probably do something with it and turn it into a better display of my collection, but at this point I'll wait before I decide to do anything creative. Although the floor in the closet is just piling up with binders as I start and finish more sets. A couple of you have stopped in to view this organized chaos in person. Carlos even took pictures a while back, but I don't know if he ever posted any on his website. I don't have a camera, so you'll just have to imagine a lot of boxes I'll have to have my parents bring their digital camera with them the next time they drop by to pay me a visit. Once inside the show, we headed right to Chandy Greenholt's tables. This time it was 25 cent commons from the 60s (ho hum) and lots of interesting things for 50 cents each. What is the best thing about Bowmans? They stick out like a sore thumb in a box of other cards so it was easy to pick off all the Black & Whites we saw. I found half a dozen while Andy took all the 50-52s. I also found a bunch of hits to my 1963 Football list. I bought some 63 FB dupes too but sadly Andy only needed one of them. At the next table, I found a 1959 Ray Berry for just 50 cents that will go into my dupes box (if Ed Schott already has it). Following that, I picked up a few '56 Football including some of the stupid SPs as dupes. There was time for just one more table but there I found two of the last three 1971-72 basketball cards I need. I told Andy and he immediately went over and found the remaining one for me. THANKS! Following the show and a lunch-in-the-car courtesy of McDonald's, we headed up to Dan Austin's house. As Dan and Andy pulled off a major deal (prewars in exchange for regionals), I pulled some junk (though hits to my list) from Dan's horde and finished off another Red Sox team set. Dan also let us take his old Beckett catalogue so we can study up on team sets and variations. All too quickly it was time to go so we headed back home. Thanks to Dan and Andy for a great day. Hope to see you guys again soon. ================= Date: Sun, 12 Dec 2004 01:50:52 EST To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: jfsilva@aol.com Subject: Reckless Ramble I just bought a new house this summer - my first - so I am still living out of boxes as I paint and redo floors. The cards will likely go there although i have a perfect sorting table in the basement so the boxes might stay there. I guess what i am saying is that I have no clue where everything will end up. Right now the binders are on shlves behind what used to be a wet bar. The boxes are stacked on built-in shelves in a really ugly office in the basement. But it's not in the basement ..this is Texas. The clay is so unstable we can't have basements. Fortunately I have a room above the garage. It's a nice room, 13 x22. In it is my computer desk, a small bookcase next to the desk for important stuff like my SCD cataloge and baseball encyclopedia and of course my dups box. Along the walls are two beautiful (in my eyes) bricks and boards book cases. Well I've been dragging the bricks and boards all over the country since I graduated from college 39 years ago. I did paint the boards once though. Thank God someone else paid for the moves. One of the book cases is 8 feet long and the other 10. Each has two shelves for binders of cards mostly, and they are full. There's a shelf on top of the bookcases for a few signed balls, hats, bottles, and stuff. I also have a 6 foot maple cabinet left from my bedroom when i was a kid with one open shelve for books, mostly baseball books or all those books that come with computer software. Underneat the open shelf is a closed are with 4 door. Its a great place to hide boxes and boxes of stuff from 1981-1993 (i haven;t bought a new cards since 93) that will get sorted some day after I retire. Of course I have no plans to retire. The far end of the room has a bed ...I suppose if Judy gets really pissed I have a place to sleep. Actually I've never used it, but occasionally my son will be home and have a friend over. It also has a small table that Judy occasionally uses to do work for the church library if I give her permission to enter my cave ... shhh ..don';t tell her i said that. Most of the time people leave me alone in my cave. Unfortunately, because this is a room above the garage, after about the first three feet the walls are slanted in the shape of the roof. So there's no place to hang and show off all my wonderful (in my opinion) stuff. There is about a 15 foot hallway leading to my cave that has a straight wall on one side. So i have three cases that i've hung on the wall to show off some on my Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson collection, along with a few other prized items like the 52 mantle and the clemente rookie. Unfortunately it's not Brocks retirement palace or Dave Kolenda's magnificent basement, but it works for me. - Doug ================= Date: Mon, 13 Dec 2004 10:05:21 EST To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Traderdoug@aol.com Subject: any chance this is real I bid on this, then had second thoughts. He left a number, so I called him and set up a dinner meeting, Tampa style. Gersh not only got to sample some nice Cuban-American cuisine, he also got to watch the antics of my three youngest children as they struggled mightily not to squirm for the two hours Gersh visited with us. After picking Larry up at the downtown Hyatt Regency in Tampa, we drove to the West Tampa section of town. We drove by the Lou Piniella Softball Field, an area where Lou played as a child. And, right behind the third base stands sat the boyhood home of Sweet Lou (he wasn't there). Invariably, though, his parents are out on the porch, or having yard sales or selling sour oranges or tobacco dust. Enterprising folks. We went to dinner at one of the restaurants on Columbus Drive, known as "Boliche Boulevard" for the many Cuban restaurants along the drive. We ate at La Teresita, Gersh had roast pork and I had boliche. The place is stark and humble, but the food is great. Gersh was nice enough to hand me a pair of cards -- a 1954 Topps card of Vern Law, and a 1954 Bowman of Eddie Mathews! Wow, that was cool. It was great to swap stories about OBC, the members we have met, and the quests and adventures we have had chasing down cards. Hope to do it again soon. My cards are scattered into every room of my house. At times they've been in the kitchen though they aren't any there at the moment. I have a combination living room/dining room. That's where the "active" stuff is. There's a 5' bookcase close at hand for my most active binders: Red Sox, Bowman baseball, odd ball, Parkhurst & Topps hockey, football and non-sport. Kelloggs (still working on those, team cards, OPC baseball and OPC hockey take up space on a 6' foot bookcase by the front door. Mainly, that bookcase is for my Topps run -- 1952 (no highs) through 1965 are stored there. The rest of the Topps run is upstairs in the second bedroom. Some of the sets have been pulled out of albums and are in boxes. Its cheaper, takes up less space and I wasnt spending time looking at them or upgrading. Basketball albums are scattered between two bookcases but I know where they are. My bulging Red Sox UV collection is in binders in three milk crates. And there are boxes and cards everywhere. All over my desk, all around me, at my feet, and of course in closets and extra bedrooms. My vintage dupes are close by but when you have over 20,000 vintage dupes (8000 baseball, 1000 basketball, 5000 football, 3000 hockey, 3000 OPC baseball, 3000 non-sport), it takes up quite a bit of space. Then there is the "unsorted cards". Peter Mead loves to visit and go through the two or three boxes of vintage stuff which hold my latest purchases, cards pulled for OBCers but not mailed and other stuff like Exhibits and Red Man where I can't decide if Im going to work on the sets or not. I still cling to the (naive?) belief that one day all this stuff will be under control but often, its overwhelming. ================= Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 07:55:30 -0700 (MST) To: "OBC Ramblings" From: tknowles@sofast.net Subject: Orlando card shops? I do have more time during the winter months to swap cards and would like make progress on anumber of sets. 1951 Bowman Baseball: I picked up a couple hundred a few weeks ago with lots of dupes but none are higher number 130. These are almost all lower grade, but not many Tiptons. First preference is to swap for similar grade Bowmans, then for Topps from 1955 to 1967 from my list. Let me know if you want to put together a swap. 1970-1973 OPC Baseball: From the recent monster box that Mike Rich and I bought in Toronto and some previous OPC purchases at the Toronto show, I now have several hundred 1970-73 dupes and lists of cards needed on line. If you are thinking of starting these sets, I can dealer scum starter lots, or if you have recently started these sets, I can check your lists and send some out. 1950's and 1960's Baseball Album: As I finish sets, I don't keep many cards from that year, especially duplicate stars or high numbers. Yesterday, I came across an album that a local buddy has squirreled away over the years and found a fair number of 1957-1969 higher demand cards, high numbers, Post Cereal short prints, and even a few Redmans. No hits for my lists, but if you have similar higher demand cards from my lists, I can acquire cards from this album at reasonable prices and work out a swap. These cards grade all over the board. And I do question the formula a little. We know how many players had hitting streaks of 50 games or more. But a 30 game hitting streak is pretty significant also. Shouldn't some weight be given to multiple streaks of 30 games or more in a career. Maybe 2 points for the 50, 1 point for 40-49, and half point for 30-39. Same with the 40/40 club, a rare accomplishment, only been done a couple of times. But 30/30 is also significant and should be given credit. Why should a player who did 40/40 once be considered so much more for this one category than say a player who may have done 30/30 3 or 4 times in his career. Again maybe 2 points for 40/40 and 1 point for 30/30 seasons. Same theory for 50 shutout innings, certainly very rare. But so is 30+ pretty significant. I don't mean to start diluting the formula but only suggesting that in the overall context of greatness, near greatness should account for a little something as well. Price guides still insist putting a premium on Polar Bear backs. For years, I have said this should not be the case. I also do not feel that a premium should be placed on the color of the backs of the American Beauty and Broadleaf backs. They are very close and I feel that they probably have the same population reports. I also noticed that a few small hoards seemed to have moved some of the scarcities around. There were a lot of Cycle cards listed this year on e-bay. Usually Cycle falls below the Sovereign and Hassan Fact. 30 on my list (ithas for the last 3 years). Joss was seen with a Cycle back this year by me for the first time. This helps me in that I had a few holes with the Cycle printing (which I think was one of the first). I always felt that the Cycle printing was shorter and only printed once. Meaning no substitutions. I feel that Piedmont, Polar Bear, and Hassan were all printed more than once using substitutions that have created the short prints/variations/errors. The Gray w/ stats only seems to be printed with Sovereign. I have not seen a Gray without stats with a Sovereign back. This makes me wonder if Sovereign was printed later. The Moran w/ stray line is rarer than we once thought. I still feel it is rare but it was on a later Polar Bear printing and I feel that it is about the same as the two Wilhelm variations. The two Wilhelm variations are from two distinct printings, Hassan and Piedmont. I think they are fairly rare since they only seem to occur with one advertisement for each. Both men are deceased. http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wa-wh.shtml John Whitehead pitched a no-hitter in 1940 for the Browns. I also looked at the roster for the Browns from 1930-1939. The closest I came to "Walter Whitehead" was John Whitehead, who joined the team in 1939. I tried googling "Walter Whitehead" Browns and came up with nothing. I also tried to figure out who is the oldest former player and found this.... http://www.whosaliveandwhosdead.com/oemajlea.htm There is no Mr. Whitehead on this list. I look through my Diamond Stars and I'm wondering why the Heinie Manush is pictured in a Senators uniform and no mention of Boston on the back. I've learned that I have the 1935 version with green ink on the back. Can anyone provide me a scan of the 1936 version with blue ink? I'd like to see what the difference is, both on the front and on the back. I checked on ebay but did not find the 1936 version. If anyone has the 1936 version and doesnt mind swapping for a 1935 version, that'd be even better but I think that is too much to hope for. ================= To: "Ramblings" Date: Fri, 24 Dec 2004 22:47:06 -0500 From: "Steve Rittenberg \(Earthlink\)" Subject: Help IDing a card I'm making up a list for the 1936 R311 Glossy cards. Jimmy Foxx is in the set. He played for the Red Sox in 1936. But look at the card: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5150469957&fromMakeTrack=true He's pictured as a catcher. No cap on him for me to confirm he was a Red Sox. I looked more closely at the 1936 Red Sox team. (Praise to baseball-reference.com ) and learned that Foxx never caught a game for the 1936 Red Sox. Based on that, I think he's a Athletic on this card. Any views on the issue are appreciated. Im going to work on putting the team name with a checklist for as many sets as possible and then put the info on the web. The hope is that people wont have to duplicate the research that was done previously. ================= Date: 25 Dec 2004 04:19:39 -0000 To: "Steve Rittenberg \(Earthlink\)" , From: "obcjohn@knology.net" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Pain in the Heinie The 1936 Manush is indeed a blue back. His sleeve shows no W, just a white patch and the last sentence reads " Heinie Manush, Red Sox outfielder,.....".
