I've been able to confirm that the set has 40 cards. I have 40 cards. There is a discrepancy between the checklist and what I have so I think this set is complete but I am not sure. OBCers -- For some time now, I've felt something has been missing from my collection. I have always been a set collector, since, like most of us, if it has numbers on the back I must get every one! As I have closed in on my Topps sets, I have chosen a few other sets to collect, but it's mostly been on a spur of the moment, "what looks interesting now," sort of thing. I've felt like a need a theme or something... So that brings me to today. Living in England, I love the village pubs, the history, and the flying, but I hate the soccer! I realized this year how much I really missed the World Series since I didn't get to see any of it. For that reason, I've decided to start a World Series collection, but as a type collection mostly. I want to collect a card of each player to appear in the World Series for a given year, but I don't want a normal Topps card unless it's the only option. I want Bazooka, Hostess, Red Man, or green tints, whatever is different. I also would like to get a program to put in front of the binder. So which World Series do I start collecting? Tough call. As you know, I'm a Cubs fan, but I don't want to start back in 1945 (or God forbid, 1908). So as a tribute to a great season this year (as long as you wern't from Chicago), and because it's my birth year, I'm going to try to collect the 1967 World Series. If anyone has any sort of oddball cards from 1967 of Cardinals or Red Sox players, I would love to have your extras. I would also like the World Series cards from the 1968 set as well (151-158) to put at the front of the What do you guys think - am I having a mid-life crisis? Election day jitters? As the title suggests, you simply look up a player and it lists every card he was on. I have the 8th (C 1998) and 9th (C 1999) editions, the only difference is that the 9th has a few obscure listings added, such as Earl Averill's Seattle Popcorn cards. For the major issues (Topps, Bowman, Upper Deck, etc.) either one should give the same info. Of course, the 9th would also have one more year's worth of cards. The last issue I can find a reference for is #10. I would assume this means they have stopped updating the book - does anyone know for sure? It's kink of irrelevant of OBC'ers as any of these work well for vintage players. I would be happy to send the 8th edition to you as I no longer have any need for it. These are known as spoof emails and primarily affect eBay and PayPal customers. Never will eBay or PayPal ask you to provide your personal login information through anything other than their secure web sites. If you get one of these emails both eBay and PayPal ask that you forward the whole email to them. Forwarding will keep the header information of the original email intact so they can trace the source of the email and take appropriate action to protect their propietary interests. Forward to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com They will respond to you. I just remembered what that something was, so here's my show report... I got out of work a bit early on Friday to attend day one. I now work in Wilmington, which is a longer commute for me, but this is one day where my new loc ation came in handy :-) Got to the show around 1:30 and got in for free with my GBSCC membership. This was more of a browsing and greeting day for me. Stopped by Kevin Savage's table and said howdy to he and Pat, welcoming them both to Boston - the happiest place in America. Also caught up with Greg Fisher of Cameo Cards. Did do some buying, of course. Got a decent deal on a couple of pre-war HOF cards and a T220 boxing hit. Also bought about 1500 or so 1979 OPC cards, though I'm not quite sure why. I already have the set and will likely make another one or two. The rest will make starter sets for anyone who's interested - I'll let y'all know when that time comes. At around 4:00 I had a decision to make: either stay until 6:00 and wait for the next raffle drawing (a $200 shopping spree) or leave immediately and beat the traffic on I-93 north. I went with the odds and journeyed home. Saturday I got to the show around 9:00 and met up with Bob Donaldson almost immediately. He and I wandered the Shriner's Auditorium together all morning, stopping at bargain bins and albums. I out on my bargaining hat and got some good deals, like a 1960 Roger Maris priced at $5 for only a buck. Pulled out some other heavy paper and spent $10 for a small stack of heavy paper. At high noon, as is tradition, Bob and I went to the dining area for our annual lunch/swap. We were soon joined by Ken Morganti and Spike Glidden, and then by Robert Pigeon. It was just us five this year but we were also joined for lunch by Kevin Savage's associate Pat. We had a great time shooting the breeze about all things cards and sports (and computer crashes, right Robert?). Pat was the hands down winner of the "guess who I am by the cartoon on the back of my 1973 Topps card" contest. After lunch Spike and I took off in search of more bargains. Spike found a bunch o'hits and I found a bunch o'cards I don't need. Around 3:30 or so we took off - unfortunately we couldn't find Bob or Robert to say goodbye. Sorry I missed you guys! Dealers I spoke with said they were doing well. This is surprising as the crowds seemed a bit thin on both days. As has been the trend at larger shows, beater cards (especially pre-war) are becoming harder to find. Of course it makes sense for the dealers to bring their graded stuff instead of their .50 boxes, but for folks like us it becomes a bit frustrating. One phenomenon that was prevalent was the grading of "recent vintage" commons (say 1975). I saw a couple of tables with cards of this ilk with prices of $5 each. To this I ask two questions: 1) doesn't it cost more than $5 to grade a card? and 2) is there anyone who would actually pay $5 for a Herb Washington or Rogelio Moret? I know the answers, but it really is food for thought (and laughter) There you have it: a few mindless ramblings if there ever were any! Looks like the next stop for me on the show circuit will be Lil' Rhody in January. I go as much for the cards as I do the wings :-) Happy Collecting! ================= To: "ramblings" Date: Thu, 11 Nov 2004 19:57:46 -0500 From: "Sean McGowan" Subject: nifty *old* baseball books this guy has a vintage '33 and '51 baseball books. Last night after arriving home from work, the doorbell went. On answering, I found my neighbor standing there with a large package that he'd taken delivery of on my behalf. I ripped it open to find my new SCD catalog!!! Well, when I say new, I mean a new copy of the 2003 edition. I'd been operating with a 1997 copy for some time now, and a few weeks back I thought I might try to update it so I got on to Amazon to see what I could find. Amazon UK didn't prove to be much help, so I tried Amazon.com and hit the jackpot. Using Amazon's "New & Used" facility, I came across a dealer selling a 2003 version - new but with a red mark across the bottom page edge. And they ship internationally. Price? $5.69. Even allowing for postage, which was $9 (not bad for shipping something of that sze overseas), this is truly a terrific bargain for me! I've been engrossed in it for hours!! Oh, and the red mark isn't a problem at all. It's just as if someone has just swiped a single line with a fine magic marker along the bottom edge. Hardly noticable. This would certainly be a recommendation I would make Chuck. I also belong to VCT and would not suggest that group of traders for a focus on pre-war card trading. The trading population in that group primarily focuses on post 1950 cardboard (All except Dan Austin of course - who is collecting every set produced since the beginning of time - ;-) ). It's been a long time since I've written to the Ramblings server, so with a few minutes to spare before I leave for work, here goes. It's been 3.5 years since my ex-wife (of 28 years) left me, my divorce has been final for over a year. Most of the time I am quite happy with my new life, God is so good to me. My kids are grown up, and turning out OK. And I have a granddaughter that really loves he "PaPa"! After pouring all my timeand energy into my family for so long, it is quite nice to have some time for myself. Not that I am doing anything that worthy, but at least I get tochoose what it is I do with my time. I am quite happy being single, and don't see myself getting involved with anyone anytime soon. I really do lead a blessed life. I facilitate a divorce recovery class at my church, and I enjoy helping others. I am still running four times a week (5 miles per run), and weightlifting 3X a week. I will be eligible to retire this summer, but the longer I stay with the FAA (I'm an air traffic controller) the more % of my pension I get and my ex doesn't get. But I still love my job and love my work. Baseball card wise, I do keep up with the OBC happenings, and I look forward to reading my Digest version of the Ramblings every day. OK I don't like reading about available cards from the 1990's but soon enough the new guys learn. Geno keep up the good work with the OBCAC, and I enjoy the monthly reports. I have completed several of my Topps sets, and only need 47 cards to complete my regular Topps run (I don't collect 52 HI #s). That is unbelievable! After many Ebay disappointments I have started using one of the snipe sites, so if I snipe any OBCers please accept my apology. Financially I am doing real good and am very thankful I was able to keep mycollection in tact. I am looking at attending this years National Convention. You guys are all so special to me! If you want me to try to get a name to you even earlier (for instance, if you live outside the US), let me know and I'll do what I can. Those of you who have been in OBC for more than a year didn't need any more explanation than that, and have probably hit their "reply" buttons already. But for the newbies and the more forgetful among us, here's the scoop: OBC does an annual "secret-santa" type gift-exchange. It's easy -- you just send me a note saying you want to participate; in a little while, I send you a name. You send something to that person, and everybody's a winner. Don't open the package until Dec. 25 -- yes, 12:01 AM counts -- then send a message to OBC-Thanks letting everybody know what you got. Reading the messages is often ALMOST as much fun as finding out what your own gift is. For everybody, here are the basic guidelines: 1. Keep it simple: please limit expenditures to about $5. 2. Be creative: some OBC members have awful tough wantlists, but gift exchange ideas have traditionally wandered far afield from wantlists. If your "victim" has a favorite team or player, that might be a good place to start. 3. Clearly mark your packages: "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL DEC. 25!" 4. You may wish to obscure your identity on the outside of the envelope; one way to do this is to send it to a friend in Lithuania who will then send to your victim with a fresh -- and untraceable -- postmark. However, if you do this, say who you are on the inside of the package! That way your victim will know who to thank. 5. Please, please, please: send your gift packages so that they will arrive by Dec. 25. Be especially careful if you are sending to an international location. 6. I'll send you your victim's name in an individual e-mail -- please watch for it and CONFIRM. It seems like every year, one or two people are forgotten; while the USPS can be blamed for some of these, it's usually because somebody didn't get an e-mail. And if you confirm, I'll know that that end is taken care of. 7. I have this nagging thought that I’ve asked this before, but I can’t find any old emails to confirm…..and Guinness has accounted for numerous brain cell deaths. So apologies, if this is old ground. On receiving my new SCD catalog last week, I had a flip through in the hope of identifying some Tigers photos that have remained a bit of a mystery to me. I obtained them some 7 or 8 years ago, on the assumption that they were Jay Publishing issues, but something about them just isn’t right. For a start, they are a different size. 4 ľ” by 7 5/16” as opposed to the standard Jay Pub 5 x 7 (note that this means they are TALLER, therefore not cut-down or trimmed versions of Jays). I have 8 of these, the players depicted being D.Brown, Bruton, Bunning, Cash, Fernandez, Mossi, Scheffing, and Wertz. This lineup seems to indicate that they are of 1962 vintage. The font used for the player’s name and team is completely different to that used on both Type 1 and Type 2 Jay Pub photos. Finally, the poses do not correspond to those listed in the SCD catalog (a fairly comprehensive list!). I can’t find these listed elsewhere in the book, and wondered if anyone out there has anything similar in their collection (perhaps whoever made these did them for other teams). I suspect that they may in fact have been issued by Jay Publishing, but if so I’m surprised that they haven’t been listed in the big book (maybe worth an email to Bob Lemke?). Anybody have any ideas? (I’ve attached a scan of the Wertz photo as an example). Offered here is a three card proof sequence of the 1968 Topps Yastrzemski Topps Test Disc.  THE SGC 60 NON-PROOF (the final product) PICTURED IN THE LISTING IS NOT FOR SALE, I included a scan for comparison purposes only. The proofs were most likely hand-cut from a processing sheet during production.  I tried to play with scan settings to get the optimum detail, but the picture doesn't do the actuals justice.  The first disc looks sort of like a hologram.  The fronts are crease and mark free, the backs blank with no markings. It's difficult to differentiate between a 1967 and 1968 Topps test disc, however both are truly rare.  The previous owner of this item is anadvanced Topps test collector and claims it's a 1968.  Moreover, the auction house that sold it listed it as a 1968 (I'll be happy to furnish proof upon sale of the item.)  Lastly, SGC graded the final copy as a Here's an excerpt from oldbaseball.com regarding the '68 Topps Test Discs: These are circular photos on a solid color background, with the player's name and team fashioned in a circle around the face of the card. These were apparently proofs and come with the waste area still intact. You'll note four more players were produced than in 1967, which is pretty odd since the 67's never made it into production either. Rare stuff, this. Another excerpt, this one from the bible of sportscards, the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards: One of the scarcer Topps baseball collectibles, this set was apparently a never-completed test issue.  These full-color, cardboard discs, which measure approximately 2-1/4"...They believe the '67s are scarcer than the '68s, I the opposite.  I base this on number of listings I've seen on Ebay, auction houses and SCD since 1981. I have also included other jpegs ? including the 1967 Topps Test Disc ? so you can feel comfortable that I at least have a little experience with tough Yaz cards (my Ebay name might also offer some comfort.) The SGC and PSA Pop and SMR reports are of little relevance here.  1967 Topps Test Discs PSA ? 2 SGC ? 25 1968 Topps Test Discs.  PSA ? 0 SGC ?1 (pictured) Advanced player collectors know that the window of opportunity for such items is very small.  This is a rare opportunity to own one of the Yaz will arrive insured and secure in bubble wrap within a paddedenvelope for $4.99. How hard are these to find and what will they cost you if you find a VGish one? I'm looking for either a Yaz or a Cepeda Disc eventually to fill out my1967 WS roster type set. If anyone can shed any light on these things, please enlighten me! Cheers, Geno 1968 Topps Test Disc Yastrzemski Yaz Proofs Red Sox A must-have for the Yaz collector. RARE! Item number: 5140183317 Seller: yazfan08 ( 304) Positive Feedback: 100% Member since Feb-03-99 in United States Starting bid: US $499.99 Time left: 4 days 18 hours 10-day listing Ends Nov-26-04 19:24:04 PST Price: US $1,200.00 Item location: Portland, OR United States Ships to: United States, Canada If you're lucky, you'll see an occasional listing for a1967 or 1968 Topps test disc. However, in my ~23 years of collecting, I have only seen a Yaz example offered once! He is usually one of toughest ? if not the toughest ? player in the disc, or any Topps scarce test issue, set. Offered here is a three card proof sequence of the 1968 Topps Yastrzemski Topps Test Disc. THE SGC 60 NON-PROOF (the final product) PICTURED INTHE LISTING IS NOT FOR SALE, I included a scan for comparison purposes only. The previous owner of this item is an advanced Topps test collector and claims it's a 1968. Moreover, the auction house that sold it listed it as a 1968 (I'll be happy to furnish proof upon sale of the item.) Lastly, SGC graded the final copy as a 1968. Here's an excerpt from oldbaseball.com regarding the '68 Topps Test Discs: R-414-UNC These are circular photos on a solid color background, with the player's name and team fashioned in a circle around the face of the card. These were apparently proofs and come with the waste area still intact. You'll note four more players were produced than in 1967, which is pretty odd since the 67's never made it into production either. Rare stuff, this. Another excerpt, this one from the bible of sportscards, the Standard Catalogof Baseball Cards: One of the scarcer Topps baseball collectibles, this set was apparently a never-completed test issue. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the toughies! Yaz will arrive insured and secure in bubble wrap within a padded envelope for $4.99. Paypal is gladly accepted, but via bank account only, not by credit card. The reason: Ifa seller accepts just one credit card transaction, then their free accountis changed to a fee-based one. As a result, all future transactions - credit card and bank account - will be assessed a percentage fee. Since I?m an occasional seller, it does not make sense to have a fee-based account. Items like the 68 discs, or 61 dice game and 66 punchouts are in the "one to five known cards per player" category. I am still hoping to update my article and I have a whole boatload of new info to add to it. I really should do it as a website. The 66 punchouts are probably the hardest of all of them, followed by 70 cloth stickers then 61 dice game (I do not believe there are more than two known cards per player in the latter two, the 66 punchouts are singles only at this point). 68 plaks are also tough, although technically not cards. the 68 discs are sometimes on ebay and don't always sell but that may be related to the seller himself. The 67 standups are a little bit more "common" as there may be about 10 of each player foating around the hobby. there's probably a couple of other really rare ones i'm not remembering (67 3-d prototype brooks robinson: 2 known) and standard catatlog listings and big buckett show a couple of weird ones from the 70's i'm not too up on, but the ones above are the really rare and desirable topps oddball cards. a 61 dice game leon wagner (in VG i belive ) went for over $4,000 on Ebay over the summer. the mantle (Which is on mastronet now) will probably got for fifty grand! ================= Date: Mon, 22 Nov 2004 19:00:58 EST To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Celenox@aol.com Subject: WAIVER WIRE #2 hello all this is the secons waiver wire with in the day...all need a home talk to me if ya want them..im adding the origianl left overs form the first waiver wire 1955 bowman #110 1960 topps# 75/94/116/252/362 1961 topps #119 1961 post #155 1962 topps # 82/84 1966 topps 68topps # 53 70 topps #94 claim them they are up for grabbs Rob Gioia ================= To: "Ramblings" Date: Mon, 22 Nov 2004 18:25:19 -0600 From: "George Vrechek" Subject: Mini OBC Convention Report To report in---- Gary Mandell, Mike Wierzbicki and I found each other checking out the bargain bins at last weekend's Sun-Times Show in Rosemont, Illinois. Aside from the fact that it's usually the busiest time of the year for supermarkets, I was asked to help open a new store in Beverly, MA which basically means we have to get eveerything ready for business starting from zero. Working your way around construction and over a dozen other people is a lot different from my usual routine. (Usually we're short handed for help, but at least all the walls are on the building and the heat works.) We got the place stocked, tagged and cleaned just in time for the holiday rush... I'm sure that made the suits upstairs really happy. The worst part was coming back to the dairy in my home store after not being there for two weeks just in time to sort through the tons of sale/ holiday items that are forced in with the load - not to mention straightening out two weeks of neglect on the shelves. I only had to throw out three boxes of stuff that went out of code while I was gone though, so I guess it could've been Anyway, I haven't been doing a whole lot with the collection besides the trip to the Wilmington, MA GBSCC show and one notable eBay win. I have a new wantlist that is updated on my website for just the variations: http://members.aol.com/ChicoD1/varilist.htm My question is about 1960s. Are the 'white' and 'cream' backs easy to disinguish (ie white is really white) or are they really just lighter versions of cream cards. I have a few that compare differently, but that may be just because they are OBC condition. I'm all over Ebay with these cards, if you find variations in your ebay quests, feel free to send me the link. I just picked up the 72 Green Cubs and a few others (Got that Bell with the break!). I'm hoping this quest doesn't take years to complete (I'm not talking about getting every card, more of the "booklet" I'm putting together with hopefully pics of every variation). I have to get my scanner up and running, but if anyone has pics of any versions, they'd be appreciated. Who knows, maybe I'll put it together and get the damn thing printed (of course every OBCer would get a copy, but I'm getting ahead of Aside to Andy--- You list is INVALUABLE so far. I did find two corrections however. 1962 checklist is # 516 not 517. and 1970 #128- card #226 is Perranoski. No, I haven't made a major scientific discovery nor am I catching up with the not-too-famous pro 'rassler from the 80's. Unfortunately I am talking about the link on the OBC directory to my webpage. I know its broken and it needs fixing. More unfortunate is that I haven't had too much time recently to investigate it and patch it up. The problem is most likely "user error" relating to my webpage. In fairness to the poor soul who got my name in the OBC Holiday Swap, I will be posting my wantlist on the WL server this weekend, thereby preserving anonymity. Thanks to those who pointed it out and thanks to everyone for bearing with Happy Collecting! ================= To: , Date: Tue, 30 Nov 2004 22:31:38 -0800 From: "Brian Lindholme" Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] How bad do you want to collect cards? Todd et al, As a Certified Addiction Professional for over 30 years I can attest to the fact that almost any pleasurable behavior can become addictive. We often refer to these as "Process Addictions". Usually there is a bio-chemical predisposition but most any one can develop a behavioral addiction. The brain produces some of the most potent chemicals we know of. One of the primary symptoms of any addiction is the presence of withdrawal upon cessation. Does anyone monitor our OBC brethren who go on the inactive list? The preceding public service announcement was brought to you by the House of Maxwell. We keep what we give away! Yahoo!
