I'll have to reply to these idiots, so they at least send it to the right e-mail address. Nah, what they don't know works to my advantage. I know it's a scam because they're not even sending the e-mails to the correct address. Quick update: I'm not at home, so I don't have the cable connection to make a fast check of the totals, but after 168 lots, the total stands at just over $4000 ...and assuming that my $5 commons (which almost nobody wanted) were added in as just $5, then we're getting close to $5000. I still have about 1/2 dozen lots left to post, which I'll do on Wednessday. I'm sending out all the OBC destined packages tomorrow (Tues.), since most of you have already paid for your lot(s). The rest of you who still haven't sent in funds will be getting a package as well... I may have dealt with you once or twice before, so I think I can trust you :-) That's all for now. I have been incommunicado for a while, waiting for my new computer after the old one died. We have had an interesting two weeks in Milwaukee. Harley-Davidson had its 100th anniversary. There was a huge party by the lake yesterday (about 200,000 people). About 200,000 people came to Milwaukee for the festivities, many on their bikes (people from England, Australia, Nea Zealand, etc. had their bikes shipped to the US for the occasion). In any 10-minute drive on the freeway around the city, you saw hundreds of Harleys. When stopped at almost amy red light in the city, groups of Harleys drove by. It was like living in a bike rally. I'd recommend forwarding the fake ebay messages to ebay. They have a site for reporting frauds. The link to the site is at the bottom of most ebay pages. Yesterday, I picked up a pile of 1955 Bowmans that had been trimmed to the shape of the television. After picking out about 15 hits (a bunch of HOFers and high numbers--no upgrades, since it is impossible for these cards to be upgrades), I have about 75 left. They are available for the asking. If anyone is working on a Poor(-) set, these could serve as fillers. Since the numbers have been cut off, it would be helpful if you ask for players by name. I also have some 1962 Topps high numbers and some 1959 Topps high numbers. Please include your mailing address on any request. Spike Glidden and I were the participants this time around, first having a crack at Trull Brook Golf Course in Tewksbury, MA and then heading to neighboring Lowell for a contest between the Lowell Spinners and the Auburn Doubledays of the New York-Penn League (short season A). The weather was darn near a 10: temps perhaps touching 80, the sun shining bright with hardly a cloud in the sky. We met at the golf course with my friends Mike and Brian rounding out the foursome. Having played this course a few weeks ago, I was looking forward at tackling it again. The course itself is in good shape, but the greens were horrible. They had aerated the greens recently and experienced some damage because of it. Too bad, because they were carpet-like just a few weeks ago. One hole, we just all agreed to take an automatic two-putt, so long as our first putt was in the vicinity. On many other greens I was expecting a clowns mouth to appear, or maybe a loop-dee-loop. Nevertheless, we all got around the course pretty good with my buddy Brian having a career best day. Having a general idea where we should go, Spike (I think reluctantly) agreed to follow me after the round to Lowell. Somehow, I lucked us right into downtown Lowell and after a couple of abrupt turns I got us to a sports bar, where we had intended to use a free pizza coupon I had. Only problem was that they were closed. A sports bar, on a Sunday, closed?? With the Red Sox-Yankees going on and a PGA Tour event near by?? Plan B brought us to the Lowell Brewery, which was only a 3-wood away from the park. At last...food!!! We got to the park and only missed a lead off walk. From there, the Auburn team must have continued their pre-game batting practice as they whacked out four runs in the top of the first. Tack on three more a couple of innings later and its seven-zip. By the seventh, it was 10-0. Given that this was the last game of the season, a giant comeback wasn't likely. So, with Spike and I a bit chilly from the ice cream and dropping temperature we called it a night. Another excellent day of golf, baseball and good company. This is likely the last chapter of the year for this unusual biathlon, but I'm already trying to come up with ideas for '04 since Manchester, NH is getting a double-A team next year :-) Happy Collecting! ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: My Cy Young winner Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2003 19:16:12 -0700 From: "Geno Wagner" OBCers -- If you weren't quite sure yet, start saving those Mark Prior cards for his HOF speech some day... He beat the Cardinals tonight, 7-0, in a must-win, even driving in a clutch run (at the time). Since coming off the DL after a collision on the basepaths against the Braves, Prior is 6-0. He has pitched 47 innings in those wins (that's right, 8 innings AVERAGE) and has given up 3 runs. That's an ERA of about 1/2. OK, so lots of pitchers go on hot streaks - this guy is for real. If the Cubs could start hitting with regularity and skip Estes in the rotation, they would be running away with the NL Central. Maybe I'm just a happy Cubs fan with three margaritas in me, but keep an eye on this kid. By the way, we all know the Cubs haven't won the World Series since 1908, but let's not forget they won it in 1907 also... Three other sets were issued as well, I'd have to dig out the boxes to ID them all as the Beckett Almanac only lists two of them. I'd say these sets go for about $100 each, maybe a little less. They are popular to break up for autograph fodder. Happy to say I met up with Glenn Codere in Glasgow last week. Had a few pints here and there and a fab Indian meal with some serious flair. Also spent some nice hours talking about this and that, mostly cards and music. Glenn even managed to slip me a '66 McAuliffe Rub Off, possibly the only one ever to live in Scotland for a while. To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: XDDX@aol.com Gang - As a life long Twins fan now living in Kansas City, I have enjoyed this baseball season far more than any other in recent memory! Many of you know how much I enjoy getting on the soapbox on behalf of the small market teams and bemoan the market forces that impact the competitive balance of MLB, but this year I have to eat some of those words and simply enjoy it all. It is so nice listening to meaningful baseball on the radio each night and waking up with an incentive to check box scores, standings, pitching match ups, again. I had slowly been detaching myself from the contemporary game, and just wanted to pass on how good it is to be back "into it". Now, if those White Sox would just go on a losing skid...... ================= Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2003 17:26:05 -0700 (PDT) Subject: The First Sports Psychologist and the Chicago Cubs To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Michael Wierzbicki Hi, Everyone! If anyone is interested and has access to an academic library, you might check out the August 2003 issue of History of Psychology (pp. 267-283). The article by C.D. Green is called, "Psychology strikes out: Coleman R. Griffith and the Chicago Cubs." The article describes how a psychologist was hired by the Cubs management in 1938 to study the team and make suggestions on how to improve. The psychologist, from the University of Illinois, filmed the players, conducted analyses of practices, and considered the management style of the manager. Needless to say, the players and the manager were not impressed (remember the scenes in The Natural when the team brought in motivational speakers?) and did not readily cooperate. From: Carlos Alcazar As a fan of the medium market team in Toronto let me say that I too enjoy seeing teams like the Royals and Twins contend. Since being on the soapbox for the small market teams has worked so well for Doug I figure I might as well give it a shot for teams like Toronto :-) As I sit here observing as the Blue Jays hover at the .500 mark moving towards their 6th consecutive third place finish in the A.L East, I can say with absolute certainty that the most exciting thing coming out of this season has been the announcement of new uniforms and a new logo for 2004, of course it didn't hurt that I was the recipient of a complementary cap featuring the new logo :-) I can also say that I do have faint memory in the back of my mind of the back to back world series in 1992 and 1993 which for those keeping score is now approaching 10 years ago, or half my lifetime. While this clearly does not rival the drought of teams like the White Sox, Red Sox or Chicago Cubs it does give me time to reflect on the fact that already my standards have fallen for my favorite team. As such I readily admit that I compose the minority of fans who have been able to develop a strong dislike for both the Yankees and the Red Sox, the Yankees because most non-New York fans know it is tradition to hate the Yankees and the Sox because they continue to deny my Jays the 2nd place finish and proceed to do nothing with that position :-) So I respectfully ask Red Sox fans here and around the world to do me one favor. That is if the Sox are not destined for some post season success could you step aside and let the Jays have a chance to have that 2nd place spot just for a change of pace, I promise you can have it back in 2005 :-) Thanks for letting me rant, I think that was slightly therapeutic. Please enjoy the rest of the season. ================= Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2003 09:27:18 EDT Subject: 1970-1973 waiver wire To: OBC-Ramblings@Yahoogroups.com From: malsman250@cs.com Can anybody use these guys? Some how I lost Josh at the end of the show and never got to say goodbye, he must have been occupied at the casino tables downstairs! Erik and I combed the show for awhile, with me trying to nail down that last 1968 card - Joe Sparma. Unfortunately I had no luck. I did manage to get my 1953 set down to two cards (Rizzuto and Podres), so that was a booming success. As Erik wished me farewell, he proceeded to pull a 1968 Joe Sparma out of his hat that he managed to find when I wasn't looking!! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED thanks to ex-Navy buddy Erik!! All in all, a great time with my buds... To make things even better, I had a Bob Donaldson offering in my mailbox when I got home. With all teh 1941 Playballs his been sending around the group, I had a hunch what it might be - sure enough, a 1941 Johhny Babich card - very cool! I'm not sure where Bob managed to find all those cards, but I am definitely thankful to be on the receiving end of his generosity once again! One more thing - since I (or Erik) completed that 1968 set, I needed to add another one to the list. My wife has been telling me forever to add the T202 Triple Folders and she would be glad to collect them with me. Who can argue with that? I ran into Big Al who gave me a couple of 1962 high numbers. How does anyone ever finish this set? If Ihad known the high numbers were this hard to find, I never would have started this set. I only keep on because if I quit now, Grant would laugh at me. Pickings are getting slimmer every show, but I did manage to pick up a 1914 Pologround Game card of Doyle. I hadn't seen one before - I especially like the picture of the stadium on the back. Also, I picked up a nice 1956 Clemente. Too nice actually, it looks very out of place with the rest of my 1956's, but the price was right so I couldn't refuse. Later I ran into Mike "Coffee Boy" Diamanti. We made plans to meet again on Saturday, along with the Family Toad. Saturday I got to the Tacoma Dome about 12. I found big Al and Brian Lindholme who favored me with a couple of Diamond Stars, my favorite set from that era. Mike (who was supposed to arrive at 10) finally showed up a littlelater. I was hungry, but no one was ready to eat yet so I killed time by going back to the tables for the 5th or 6th time. In my grazing I did happen to find a 1959 Seattle Popcorn card, which is kind of like hitting the lottery as these things are tough to find. When I saw the price at $16 (low) I figured this dealer doesn't follow eBay, and when I asked him he verified that deduction. And then when I tried to pay for the card, the dealer would only take $8! You have to like dealers like that. Finally, the others got hungry enough to go down to the Freighthouse (2 blocks away) for some chow. We found some great fish & chips and were acting somewhat normal when Big Al pulls out his cell phone and dials Grant. I figure Grant deserved much of the abuse we dished out as he had committed to coming down for the show, and then backed out at the 11th hour. At least in some sense, Grant was able to join us for a little bit, and great fun washad by all. -Dave Fallen ================= To: Subject: Trimmed 53 Bowmans? I bought it from a store that I used to frequent quite often but began to avoid after a couple of the store's employees started showing me that they really weren't interested in vintage cards as much as they were in the game cards, toys and comics that increasingly took up most of the store's display space. To me, it seemed as if the store was shifting away from cards and towards the Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh!/Magic: the Gathering phenomena. Add to that observation the fact that the staff didn't understand that a card with a hole punched in it should sell for a lot less than 65% of HI BV, and I began to simply take my money elsewhere. Truth be told, I liked the place when the owner was there. But he decided to let his employees run the store, and I wasn't getting a good enough deal with anyone else. A few months ago, a couple of things brought me back to the store. My daughter developed a taste for Pokemon cards and I knew they had a couple of 5000-ct. boxes of them dirt cheap. During that visit I found that the employees who inadvertently drove me away were gone, and a young lady was taking care of business. She didn't know anything about vintage cards either, but was happy to let me explain how condition affected value, etc...and for those of you who have seen my chapter-length ramblings, be assured that I am just as verbose in person when the subject of cards comes up. That time, Melissa got about 30 common Pokemon cards for less than I'd spend on a pack of modern Topps cards and I picked up a few 1950s cards including a '52 Hi # for only $4. In an OBC rambling, I commented that it was sad to see that a place that had such a lot of great stuff was slowly losing it. We've taken Melissa back a couple of times (she's now keeping her cards in a couple of plastic boxes that used to be mine but somehow changed hands), and I kept making a mental note to drag along my wantlist sometime. Today, I went back and the owner was there. Actually, he was doing some cleaning up before the football game started and turned on the "OPEN" light in case anybody stopped in. With the store empty, we had a chance to talk, and I asked him why the vintage section had become such a small part of the store. It seems that that former employee I mentioned earlier had paid so little attention to the stuff in the card displays, a 50-something year old man would go in about once a week and "look around" for two hours. He would only buy a 400-ct. box but never any cards. Turns out, the guy would leave the store with some cards inside the box; he simply took advantage of the fact that the clerk was busy with the kids getting game cards and took a little of the inventory with him. This went on for more than two months, and he made off with about 20 T206, some Red Mans, most of the good pre-'57 cards including '48 Bowmans of Rizzuto and Musial, a '55 Topps Duke Snider and 100 '53-'56 Topps commons. In total, about $12G simply walked out of the store. Tad discovered what was going on and tried to snare the guy the next time he came in. He tried to keep the guy occupied until the police showed up, but the scumbag figured out what was going on and got away. Oh yeah, that employee was looking for other avenues of work very soon afterward. Tad told me that once he realized how much he lost, he decided to just get out of the business of sports cards and devote his interests to other collectibles. This really got to me. The hobby has been through enough, but Tad was one of the good guys in the business around here. I understand that dealers have to deal with the occasional instance of some 12 year-old walking out with a few rare Yu-Gi-Oh! cards or some older collector slyly stuffing a '75 Rose card in his shirt pocket while the clerk's back is turned; as Tad said, "it's the cost of doing business." But what happened was criminal. While there, I picked up five '51-'52 Bowmans for $2 each and the last three '53 Topps Tad had for $1 each (Tipton mint stuff). I also picked up the first '77 Topps cloths sticker I've ever owned; I recognized it through the glass and Tad let me get it for a quarter. He also let my daughter pick up more Pokemon cards than we were going to let her get ("She likes 'em, so I'll just toss those in for nothing"), and even opened up his coke machina and let us each grab a can before we left. Like I said, he's one of the good guys. But now that he's told me about it, maybe I will stop in more often with my wantlist. And if I get a good deal, maybe I'll drag along some other wantlists as well...it just bothers me that a small handful of people can be so greedy. It's bad for business, yes. But it's poison to the hobby when an honest dealer cuts his losses like that. For those that read this far, I'll toss a couple on the waiver wire. Turns out I already had one of those '53 Topps cards, so if you're in need of card #136 - Ken Heintzelman in OBC-worthy shape, I'll send it out to the first person who claims it. Also, I have a 1962 Topps card #316, Killebrew's "In Action" card for anyone who needs one. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. I took the liberty of checking them out and added some extra cards to his winnings after mentioning that he should consider lookinginto OBC. Now that I know that this is the direction he is headed, I willsee if I can get him some more cards. BTW, in a shameless plug, I have some Tipton examples of most all the 70s star cards up on eBay right now. I have listed 1971-1974 and have to do 1975-1982 later this week. Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2003 21:49:22 -0700 From: "Brian Lindholme" OBC World, This has been a big week for Ye Olde Toad in OBC ! Consequently, this mightturn into a long missive, so I'm warning you now... First off, the eventful trip to the North where I had the pleasure of hangin' with my PNW Homies. Dave Fallen ( what, no nickname???), The Saint, Coffee Guy and the Spirit of Grant all joined me in attendance at the fine Tacoma Dome Show. Long drive made nicer by the opportunity to actually see and feel the cardsI was buying...much nicer than the non-personal eBay approach of hoping what is in the envelope is what you expect... Anyway, big thanks to all of those above for their contributions to my finetime in Washington. Nice cards, but we all know it's not about the cards. It's really all about how to pick on Al before he picks on you. Grant seemed to lose this round...I wish Al's cell phone had a speaker-phone option tohear the quick-witted Canadian comebacks, but Al claims that he's still waiting for one....Al had barely finished firing off the last insult to Grantwhen he started in on Mikee. Seems that Dave and I have some protection inthe pecking order. Plus Al paid for the fish & Chips. He's Holy or something... I spent the night at Mike's on lovely, isolated Whidbey Island. Kind of a pain to have to ferry back and forth, but it was well worth the fine company. I got a look at the "Tipton Anything" collection and the Shrine, ate BBQ Steak, shot some hoops, begged for a copy of the best baseball book ever written (The Glory of Their Times) and got a great deal on high numbered 53's, all before falling asleep like a rock. ZZZzzzzz.... Hit traffic accidents all the way home, but luckily I was not involved. ( That 1953 John Riddle looks like it may have been in an accident though...and some of those old Zeenuts I bought(see below) may have been run over... :>) It was a full 10 hours traveling from start to finish, but I'd do it again , no problem !!! I have to mention Mark Macrae, because it's always great to see Mark , listen to his vast knowledge, and get a few cards at great deals. He's got the good stuff, PCL, E-cards, T205's, etc. Thanks Mark !! Hope to see you againsoon. Another card show in just a month ?? Yikes that one is much closer driving but my wallet hasn't healed from this one... Fine segue into the next thing that got some Toad money. I could not think of a finer way to spend it than to participate in the OBC-EBAY Redpath auction. I bid high and often just like I planned...but most of the lots still slipped by me....but not all of them !! I still was able to contribute a couple Franklins towards the best cause imaginable. Ken mailed off my winnings which arrived today. Some great cards, and a totally great effort on everybody's part. There were some amazing donations going on there !! Lots of $$$ raised so...Let's do it again next year !!! In closing, I have some stacks of cards to organize ,lists to cross off andsome great memories of the last few days, many Thanks out to OBC World....it's the greatest place. ================= Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 18:53:49 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: need memphis ABA cards From: "mark zentkovich" I am starting a collection of memphis aba cards list below..would love any of these that you can spare, any grade... thanks, mark '71/'72 - Memphis Pros 158 Charlie Williams 168 Wilbert Jones 176 Gerald Govin 185 James Jones 203 Craig Raymond 212 Lee Davis 223 Al Cueto '72/'73 - Memphis Tams 184 Johnny Neumann 193 Wilbert Jones 202 Randy Denton 211 George Lehmann 221 George Thompson 226 Wendell Ladner 238 Gerald Govan '73/'74 - Memphis Tams 185 George Thompson 194 George Lehmann 211 Randy Denton 221 Wilbert Jones 229 Warren Davis 243 Johnny Neumann 253 Lee Davis 263 Les Hunter '74/'75 - Memphis Sounds 179 Wil Robinson 189 Randy Denton 192 Mel Daniels 199 Glen Combs 215 Larry Finch 225 Team Leader Card 240 Roger Brown 251 Ronnie Robinson 261 Mike Jackson 263 Freddie Lewis '75/'76 - Memphis Sounds (NOTE: the team was disbanded before the start of this 230 George Carter 239 Tom Owens 249 Stew Johnson 261 Rick Mount 271 Collis Jones 281 Team Leader Card 292 Mel Daniels 301 Billy Shepherd 315 Chuck Williams 324 Team Card ================= Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 21:57:10 EDT Subject: Trip's Trips To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: tply@aol.com First, I would like to thank Ken and everyone involved for running the great auction! Thomson, who was born in the Townhead area of Glasgow before emigrating to America with his family, is set to join the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame, a gallery of Scotland's greatest athletes launched last year by the National Museums of Scotland and sportscotland. The baseball star, whose teammates included legends such as Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth, was nominated this summer and he is tipped to be inducted into the museum later this year. Although his parents and their six children emigrated when Bobby was two, he identified himself as a Scot throughout his baseball career. He began playing with a broom handle in his back yard and was spotted by the New York Giants a leading American team while he was still at school. By 1947 he was a professional in the major leagues. Although he was twice acclaimed a National League all-star, and hit a total of 264 home runs before he retired in 1960, the peak of his career came with that one great shot. Thomson's team was battling the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League championship, trying to qualify for the World Series. They were set to lose until the final hit of the match, when the 27-year-old sent the ball flying out of the park, winning the game and his place in baseball folklore. In America, older people still remember what they were doing when Thomson hit the shot. He is the only Scot to have been featured on a US postal stamp. But in his homeland he is almost unknown. Later this year the man known as the Staten Island Scot is set to be officially recognised his own nation for the first time as he turns 80. Now living in New Jersey, Thomson said he was delighted that more Scots will hear about his career. It makes me proud that Scots might recognise my little bit of notoriety, and at my age a little bit of attention is a big thing, he said. I always felt Scottish in my blood, my feelings and my thoughts and I know where my roots are. Even though I was 2 when we left Glasgow, I used to ask my older sisters about what it was like. My upbringing and my personality are Scottish. He still remembers his feelings of excitement and surprise at the moment when he hit the shot acclaimed as the moment of sporting history in a new American book, Not Till The Fat Lady Sings: The Most Dramatic Sports Finishes of All Time. Stephen Anderson, director of Kelpie Films and producer of the new documentary, said it would include interviews with Ralph Braca, the baseball star who pitched the shot, and Billy Crystal, the actor, who is a keen fan. Anderson said Thomson deserved a place in the history of Scottish successes: Bobby Thomson and this shot are firmly a part of American folklore, but over here he is a forgotten sporting hero. It is mad to think that people don't much about the only Scot to have been a really successful baseball player. When he made that home run, the crowd went crazy and he became a national hero. Bob Crampsey, a veteran sports commentator, said it was high time Thomson's success was celebrated in Scotland. Since writing the article last spring I've continued my fact finding on Burdick. In fact, weather permitting, Iwill be flying from Chicago to NYC tomorrow and visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I finally arranged a visit to see some of the collection that is housed in the print department. I'll let you know if it happens and what the results were. Through the article I've meet or heard from a number of people including veteran collector Lionel Carter, a great niece of Burdick, and Sean Kirst whohas just written a book "The Ashes of Lou Gehrig" that mentions Burdick. There will be another article in Sports Collectors Digest one of these days about the hobby correspondence of Lionel Carter. It includes quite a few letters from Burdick and some additional observations. If there is interest, I'll post it on the library page once it has appeared in SCD. PS I have a picture of Burdick that I have been trying to get someone to put with the article on the library page. Any help would be appreciated. ================= Date: Fri, 19 Sep 2003 18:46:11 -0400 To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Lemke e-mail? Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2003 21:55:23 -0700 From: "Brian Lindholme" OBC World, I just returned from a great jet boat trip up the historic Rogue River, site of the Rogue Indian Wars of 1855-56. Unbelievable journey full of wild life, whitewater rapids & salmon fishermen. 104 miles of wilderness which would seem to be as far removed from a baseball diamond as possible... But when our boat captain started talking about some of the Rogue River's famous residents, my ears perked up. As we drove past the Wally Haas canyon and lodge, named for the former Oakland A's owner, our captain told stories of the wealthy man's times on the river. Great connection number one. A baseball team owner who loved fishing for Chinook salmon... But it was just a few dozen miles later when the talk turned to the gent referenced in this article : http://oregonstadiumcampaign.com/interview_006.html (Seems that this organization, the Oregon Baseball Committee knows good initals when the see them !!) According to our boat pilot Tom, he has driven Bobby Doerr up and down the great Rogue River many times. At one of the remote boat stops in tiny Agness OR, the cafe displays several signed balls, bats and photos of Bobby. Bobby has invited many a major leaguer back to his ranch on the Rogue, and Tom brags of driving HOFers Duke Snider and Ted Williams on his jet boat. Tom even commented that while Bobby is one of the nicest guys you'd like to meet, Ted was totally opposite.... Ah yes, even in the virtual "middle of no-where" it came in handy to be wearing my OBC T-Shirt, as a Dodger fan wearing a Hideo Nomo jersey noticed my fancy duds and it sparked a short conversation. I'll bet neither one of us dreamed we'd be talking about Cooperstown when we first set sail on our trip. http://www.roguejets.com/ Awesome trip...and so good I'd do it again if any of you friends want to join me...Oregon rocks !! Any help, direction, advise that you people can give would be most helpful. I have in my possession a, what I believe to be a 1964 Green Bay Packers fully autographed football. panel #1- "the Duke Panel" is autographed in pen with all the Packers coaches including Lombardi, and other hall of famer Tom Fears,[ 6 coaches total]. Panel #2 bottom of ball has 25 Signatures including Nitschke, Starr, Adderly, Willie Wood, Willie Davis, Henry Jordan, all hall of famers. Panel #3- has 16 signatures including the following hall of famers Forrest Gregg Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor. 10 Hall of Famers are on this ball. Panel #4 has the Wilson logo, Pete Rozelle signature burned in the ball from manufacturing. Under the Wilson logo is says in script National Football league Eastern Conference Western Conference and then in block letters it says Green Bay Packers. From my limited research, all the signatures appear to be from the 1964 Team. All signatures are perfectly legible, the ball does not have a scratch on it, and all sigs are in pen. The owner of the ball is a retired United Airlines reprenstative, who did all the Packer flight plans and flew with the team on all the charter flights from 1960 thru 1966. he is interested in selling the ball, and I would like to know how to get the best price for him. I called Brian from Mastronet, who has a radio show on espn radio 1000 in Chicago last Saturday, and he said with proper authentication it could be worth $3000- to$5000, and maybe more. My plans are to take the ball to the next big show in Chicago in November and 'Shop it". I need to know what else I can, or should do ,to prepare for I have never held something like this before, and it is truly an amazing piece of memorabilia. I was also thinking about calling the Packer hall of fame and see if there is interest from them. Lots of history with this ball. Any help or suggestions in this matter is greatly appreciated. Got ‘em all real cheap. Unfortunately they are slabbed and I, my friends, am a slab virgin. The cards have been graded by PGS (Professional Grading Service), and range from a 3 to a mind-numbing 6.5 – I mean, what’s the bloody point, eh? Incidentally, if the 6.5 (a 70/71 OPC Hockey #155) is anything to go by, I’d avoid this service like the plague should you ever be inclined to get your cardboard assessed. Despite being described as EX-MT+, this card has 3 frayed corners, multiple print spots, and a grubby, faded back with 2 clearly visible surface creases. Anyway, the question I have is one that’s been asked many, many times on this forum – What’s the best way to liberate these cards? I’m considering using a hacksaw to get into the cavity, then a screwdriver to pry in open enough to slide the card out. Has anyone else had any experience with PGS slabs and can suggest an easier way? Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 20:10:39 +0100 From: "Glenn Codere" My slabbed cards have been successfully liberated! Seven of them were housed in fairly brittle plastic which simply shattered when struck on the corner with a sharp hammer blow. The other two proved to be made of sterner stuff (softer plastic, no shattering). I’m afraid it was a taste of cold steel for them. A careful hacksaw cut just above the card level left just enough of a gap to slide the card out. Man, I’m psyched!!! Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 22:12:29 -0400 From: "Peter Mead" What is the old saying "if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all." But then again it can always be worse. Had a great summer until we came home from our vacation in early August-- Got some bad gas in the Alleghany National Forest. Didn't have our van back until September 10th. Lots of new parts and stories about what was wrong--ended up with new fuel injectors and a new gas tank because of a fill up that was mostly water. Could have been a lot worse if most of the repairs weren't covered by my comprehensive insurance. Walked in the house and realized that we had been robbed. But it could have been a lot worse--the house wasn't ransacked and they didn't take much. Then my car goes on the blink. But it could have been worse--the diagnosisis that both engine mounts are shot. So I could have lost the whole car. Of course, this was after I had to put new brakes on the car. We survived the hurricane--but instead of cleaning up all of the debris around my yard, I should have been cleaning out everything that ended up in mygutters. It rained three more inches last night--and much of it ended up in my basement. It could have been worse--I might not have noticed it for a few days. It all could have been worse with out OBC, cards and some online camaraderie. Sorry I missed Ft. Washington--hopefully I will get something in the mail to those I am indebted to. Thanks folks for listening to my ramble. peter mead ================= Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 19:49:05 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] WS predictions To: ChicoD1@aol.com, alcattle@earthlink.net, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Chris Stufflestreet My college roommate Thom had a theory about that. He said that he'd know that the world would come to an end if the Cubs and Red Sox ever met in the Series. His prediction: 7th game, tied in extra innings. Bases would be loaded, and a full count pitch would finally be met by a swung bat. The world would simply implode on itself because at that moment, somebody would have to win...and the delicate balance would suddenly collapse. But then again, I'm a Yankees fan, and hopefully the Bombers will keep the Bosox out of the Series. But I'm holding hope for the Cubs. At least the Red Sox have only had to endure 85 years; the last time the Cubbies brought home a World Championship, Giant fans blamed Fred Merkle for his boneheaded play that allowed the NL title to go to Chicago. That was 95 years ago this week. Interesting note: the last time the Bosox won the World Series, they beat the Cubs. I thumbed through 9 of the 368 albums including most of the1933 through 1952 baseball cards. Incredible. My first reaction was that Burdick had everything - but I realized that Burdick's collection defined "everything" at the time. Of course there would be no gaps in the collection. I was particularly interested in what cards were glued, hinged with tape, or corner mounted. It wasn't easy to get an appointment. No one I met responsible for the safekeeping of the collection had the slightest idea what a Goudey, PlayBall or T206 was, however they were cordial. Lost game #119 tonite and knocked me out of a contest I entered for how many losses and who would lose the game for teh Tigers m(I guessed Fernando Rodney for loss 119 and it was Franklyn German). Jewish New Years (Rosh Hashanah) started tonite and I would like to wish everyone a traditional healthy, happy and sweet New Year. I stopped by a card store not far from my home, that I go to a couple of times a year, just to see of they have picked up anything of interest. I actually bought a small stack of publications and plastic BB cups. They had a number of old sports magazines (from 1948-present), including some Sport, Sports Illustrated, 1971 Dell booklets, team yearbooks, All-Star game programs, etc. from $2 - $50. Included were some Sport magazines with big name players (Mays, Koufax, Frank Robinson, etc.) in the $5 - $10 range. These had creases, etc., but if you are interested, I wrote down some covers I could pick up for folks. I picked up a 1961 Kessler's guide, which goes well with the 1955 guide someone in the group sent me last month. Another publication I picked up is what I think is the 1968 SI swimsuit issue for $2. When was the first swimsuit issue? Also got a small stack of 1985 Sunshine Food Stores Detroit Tigers plastic cups. I need a checklist for these and some other sport cup issues from the late 70s, early 80s. Please LMK if you have some lists of these. Work has been real rough for a number of reasons, but it mis not uncommon for month end. I apologize for not sending out some packages sitting in the car and others that need to be packaged up, so please bear with me. Last weekend, my great Uncle Morrie passed away. He was the baby brother of my grandmother. Did I mention he was 87. The funeral was last Sunday. On Monday, my 94 year old grandmother, had a stroke. Running back and forth to the hospital, working OT, getting ready for the New Year, etc., a week to forget. Granny is upset because they would not let her come home for the holiday and weekend. Good that she is feisty, but we do not know the true prognosis yet. I have been a customer of OBC certified dealer Kevin Savage for about 25 years when he used to come up to the Detroit area for shows. I recently won a few SCP lots from different auctions of his. I was surprised that he would not use a puffy for 3 cards and required me to pay $4.95 for UPS, even after I requested a puffy. Although 1 card was a 1950 Bowman Campanella, it was in poor condition, with paper loss on the back. Total of the 3 cards was $29, so it was not a real expensive package. Kevin did not make any money on the postage since he did send it UPS, but I did not thin it was necessary. Thanks for letting me ramble. I have read several baseball books since summer that I can recommend heartily. If you are looking for a nice read (or starting to drop hints to your spouse for gifts for the holidays), you might consider these: The Last Good Season, by Michael Shapiro. This book covers the Dodgers' 1956 season, as they beat out my Milwaukee Braves in the last weekend of the season. The book also covers the stadium issue, as O'Malley tried to get a new stadium built. It was interesting to read the behind-the-scenes negotiations and politicking. The Teammates, by David Halberstam. This book focuses on four long-time Red Sox teammates: Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Johny Pesky, and Dom Dimaggio. It covers their friendship, from their minor league days through their major league careers and continuing for the rest of their lives. It culminates in a trip that two of them made to visit Ted Williams shortly before he died. Baseball as America (by the National Geographic Society). This is a coffee table book, with dozens of 1- to 2-page entries on anything and everything to do with baseball, including baseball card collecting. Saturday's game was, by far, the best game I have seen in several years. I've copied a few paragraphs from an on-line source, and added a few comments. "Trailing 8-0 in the fifth, the Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the inning and three more in the seventh to make it 8-4, prompting Trammell to keep his best players in the game. The scrappy Tigers scored four more in the eighth to make it 8-all." Trammell actually put in a pitcher from AA by the name of Schmack. You know the sound the bat makes when it hits the ball. "In the ninth, Alex Sanchez walked with one out and stole two bases. Warren Morris then struck out on a wild pitch from Jesse Orosco (1-1) as the ball went to the backstop." I thought it was a foul ball, but I guess I was wrong. BTW, is Jesse Orosco the only current MLB player who meets the difinition of OBC vintage since he first appeared in "The crowd at Comerica Park was announced as 14,277, but only about 5,000 appeared to be in the stands in the late innings. The promise of a postgame fireworks show certainly kept some fans in the seats." Maybe not even 5000. I actually stayed because I bought a scorecard and was planning to score the game until the end. "Still, the fans who showed up were spirited before the comeback. They even did the Wave, and no boos were heard. And the fans who stayed until the end were rewarded with a real treat." The Wave wasn't no half-baked version either. Fans were scattered all over the park, and the Wave went around the entire park four times without stopping. How can one boo Alan Trammell? He got the players to play their best even at the end of the season. Sunday's game was decent, and the Tigers won to end the season at 43-119, but there was no comparison to the game on Saturday night. Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Matter of fact, the entire AL East has ended up Yanks, Sox, Jays, O's, Rays for six straight years. Musial. 40 of 80 1952-1955 Red Man Disappointing only 5hits so far 27 prewar cards A group purchase of T-206 led by Sassy; combined with splitting a Playball lot with Steve and picked up a lot more of these than 65 oddball cards (Jell-o, Milton Bradley, Bazooka, Nu-Card Hi-Lites, Milk Duds, Topps inserts, etc.) OBC, Ebay and shows made an impact here. 1970 Milton Bradley finished. 1969 MB down to 10, hits to Bazooka & Topps inserts. Espo & Sanderson) 60 of 120 1974-75 OPC Hockey Although many need upgrading, I have almost finished these. Down to 206 of 269 1976-77 OPC Hockey Again need lots of upgrades, but went from needing 269 to needing 14. Have added more cards than expected this year, but not necessarily on targetted items. Tremendous progress on hockey, although it remains my weak area. Need to spend more time on Ebay looking for stars and sp's of sets I am working on. Would like to finish at least 2 more sets this year, although I am probably within 5 of a dozen sets.
