Put normal amounts into savings accounts. Grocery shopping complete. Vehicles

Baseball Grounds, also referred to as Huntington Street Grounds or Baker

For those of you interested...
Jefferson St. Baseball Grounds was located at Jefferson park and was one of
the first true enclosed baseball fields in the country. It was a public park
that the Phillies and Athletics rented space from. It was located at 25th and
Jefferson St. The Phillies played there as part of the AA and NOT the National
Leauge. The Athletics were the participants in the first game and were
subsequently expelled from the leauge the next season. The Phillies came later. Not a
whole lot is known about the Jefferson St. Grounds.
In 1883 the Phillies officially moved into Recreation Park (after moving the
franchise from Worcester, MA and losing nearly all the players to what was
something akin to free agency). Recreation Park was another public baseball
grounds and was actually used for baseball before the Civil War. Al Reach re-did
the park in 1882. It was a rather irregular field. 331 ft to center but 369 ft.
to right center. 300 ft. down left field and 247 down the right. It did
include outfield seats, a large grandstand, and clubhouse. It could hold 6500 fans
(although only 3500 could sit). There were times when it was packed to 10000
though. The park was bordered by Columbia and Ridge Aves. and by 24th and 25th
Philadelphia Park/Huntington Park/Baker Bowl was built in 1886-1887. It was
on Broad st. and bordered by Leigh, 15th, and Huntington. All wooden and rather
modern when built it was finally left 51 years later the most outdated and
useless stadium ever built. Reach built it again. It was a fairly nice ballpark
with a lot of grandstand and standing room area. Originally held about 12500
seating and another 5000 standing room. In fact, the day it opened it set the
record for the largest crowd (nearly 20000). A fire destroyed most of it in
1894. Reopened to a larger seating area and a swimming pool in the clubhouse. The
dimensions changed often but it was about 280 down right field, over 330 down
left, and 408 to center although there were fairly high fences in all three
outfields which held advertising signs. It was torn down in the '50s. Btw,
there is a car wash, gas station and fast food resturaunt on the site currently.
Hope this helps

Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2003 8:03:12 +0000
From: Glenn Codere
I’ve recently been in contact with Kurt Tourdot, asking him if he could put a package of cards together for me. Unfortunately Kurt doesn’t take PayPal, so I need some help in passing some cash on to him.
I’m fairly certain that Kurt will be exhibiting at this year’s National, so I was wondering if one of you could hand him some cash for me. What I need is someone who is attending the National and who has a Paypal account that can accept credit cards.
If one of you can help me out, I’ll contact Kurt to tell him how much to expect and to send him my want list. I’m sure he’ll be busy preparing for the big event, but hopefully he may be able to put a package together prior to it. If so, I would also ask you to collect it and post it out to me (I’ll pay all postage costs). If he can’t prepare anything in advance, it would simply be a matter of handing him some cash on my behalf.
Over the past couple of years, my very good friend Mr.Rittenberg has been acting as my go-between/agent/designatedshopper/etc. He’s been amazing in this capacity, but I don’t want him to feel that I’m taking advantage of his extremely generous nature, hence the reason for this request to the group as a whole.
So, any volunteers? Anyone? Bueller?

From: bdangelo@aol.com
Hi gang,
Was getting ready to head out to the beach on Thursday (what better way to enjoy the Fourth of July than to go to the beach on the third?), when I got a surprise call from Terry Woods. Terry assured me that reports of his demise have been exaggerated, and then thanked me for a book I had sent him about baseball gloves. While our chat was short -- the kids were hounding me to get off the phone and in the car -- it was fun to talk with a fellow OBCer.
I have been fortunate to talk with four OBCers on the phone -- Terry, Brad Chambers, Mike Rich and (former OBC guy) Barry Clesh. It's always a pleasure to talk with any of you.

Subject: Long ramble about My Life as a Living Soap Opera
From: "mikesportsfan"
I apologize for the length of this ramble, but the last month or so
has been a real "interesting" time. As the working partner in a
title insurance agency, I have been working 70 hour work weeks due to
the low interest rates. The last weekend in June I had hoped to go
to Chicago for Sportsfest. Had to cancel and worked 20 hours over
that weekend. Seperately, since Rick Redpath's passing, I have had 4
other people locally who passed away. In Judaism, we do things
differently from other religions when in comes to burial practices.
We bury the person as soon as possible and then have the visitation
at what is known as a Shivah house (House of mourning). Depending on
timing and religiousness of the family will determine how many nites
the family will "sit Shivah". Each nite there is a short religious
service at the Shivah house. 3 of the people who passed away were
parents of close friends. The first was Jewish and the family was
unable to arrange to have a Rabbi attend for teh Shivah service and I
was requested to lead the service. Talk about scraping teh bottom of
the barrel. I also had a woman I used to work with, who was in her
late 40s pass away from cancer. This last week brought a funeral
Tuesday and when I got home from the cemetary was a message about
another friend's father passing away. So Wednesday, I went from a
Shivah house to a visitation.
Thursday, I found out a close friend, Rocky, who joined us for the
first ever gathering of FOOT had been laid off from his job, as a 4th
of July "gift" from his employer. Yesterday, being the 4th of July,
is always a very hectic day for me. I serve on the city's
Independence Day Commission, which helps plan the Parade and
carnival. We got through the Parade OK, and just as the festival
aspect was getting started, we got hit with a storm. More high
winds, then rain, however, there was some lightning with the winds.
Not sure which caused it, but there was an electrical transformer
which "blew up" and some electrical wires came down, right at the
park, sparking a fire in the park. The downed wire landed on a
friend of mine's car. It also ended the festivities for the day. At
least it saved me from having to make some of the announcements,
later in the day. We did make it to some excellent fireworks later
in the day, which we thought would get cancelled due to rain and more
This weekend, instead of being relaxing, included my sister being Bat-
Mitzvahed. Normally, people are Bar or Bat-Mitzvahed when they are
13. My sister does it at age 41. Better late than never. This
means lots of out of town relatives and friends. I was drafted to
host 1 relative for a few nites. He is staying in the singles BB
card room. As some of teh FOOT members can tell you, I have 1 room
for my singles and 1 room for my dupes. Publications and pop cans
(RC Cola, etc.) are kept in the basement.
I am still behind at work, with pipe dreams of catching up this
week. Next week I go back for a day in the hospital for an annual
test. The worst part is the prep the day before. I will therefore
miss 2 days of work. The running joke with the Dr. is the test is to
figure out why I am doing better health wise. Stress is suppose to
aggravate the condition. Cannot figure why I would have any stress
lately. Mainly the above has just wiped me out mentally and
physically. I just have been completely exhausted lately.
Still hope to somehow get to the National at the end of the month for
Saturday and Sunday.
Hope all is well with everyone else and that the Ziggy cloud that has
hovered over me the last month or so, finally goes away.

Re Geno's message about the seller "ohiotarheelfan"
The vintage card message board (Network 54) I follow has been in an uproar about
this seller for weeks. He? (I think it may be a woman) is selling shameless
reprints and fakes, and making good money off less than knowledgeable
It's especially infuriating because several of the Network 54 board have urgently
written to ebay complaining about the seller, but ebay basically doesn't
care as long as it collects its listing and final value fees. And theprivate
auction format makes it impossible for good samaritans to warn bidders.
About all that can be done is some sort of scambuster campaign, where someone
bids to win the items with no intention of paying for them. Of course ebay
will throw that person off double quick. And who has the time and energy
to mount that kind of effort on behalf of buyers who clearly have more money
than sense?
Finally one such dupe has had the gumption to post a negative feedback-- hopefully
that will provide some warning and stop this outrageous scamming.
In the meantime, everyone watch out for this seller, who's a bottom-feeder of
the worst kind.

What is worse is that he/she does take paypal and does offer a return policy
on his/her graded cards in other auctions...that should be a big warning. He
also changed his ebay user id just before listing the cards in this fake
batch...i did contact ebay but not sure how much that will happen.
from the little law I know, I know that if he sells something that is fake
and does not represent it as such (even if they do not know it is a fake)
invalidates the terms of the contract. He/she must take the item back or you could
take them to court and criminal fraud charges could be filed under the mail

For those of you who are working on the 34 Canadian Goudey set, beware
that there are no all English backs for this set, just the French-English
backs. Having worked on this set for 5+ years and having viewed 100's of
these cards and talked with numerous dealers, I can state positively that
this is the case. It was probably assumed that since the 33 set had both
backs, the 34 set did as well.
For those working on the 34-36 Diamond Stars set, there is almost surely
only one back on card #7 Lew Fonseca. I have the complete variation set
except for the supposed 1935 back on this card. However, I've seen well
over 100 of the #7 card and they all are the 1934 version. Finally I went
to Total Baseball and found that Fonseca last played in 1933 and only
played 23 games in that season. That would indicate that he likely had no
card issued in 1935 and only one card in the set, and that seems to be the
case. Every example of this card I've seen is the 1934 version. Again
since all other cards in this set up through card #24 have at least 2
versions it probably was assumed that #7 did as well. Anyway after working
on this set for 6+ years I'm convinced that this is the case. I'm
considering the set done at 167 cards.

The Saint showed up exactly at 6:00pm Friday , just like he said he would, no
wrong turns, no wrong cities.
We spent the last two days enjoying the beautiful Oregon coast, visits withfellow
OBCer Doug Chamberlain and some great food.
There's nothing quite like OBC-Live and we made this mini-meeting memorablewith
a few cards, way too many carbs (I blew my low-carb diet this weekend)
and lotsa laughs.
I hope Al & Michelle had a nice time as each of them weren't feeling too great,
but they are troopers and hung right in there !!!
Al unloaded on my 71 black beauts list with about a dozen star cards, Bench,
Rose, Perry, Stargell & Marichal were among them. Nice hits !! Thanks Al!!!
We tried to find some cards in notoriously baseball-shy Florence OR, but Doug
came away with the only nice card in the case at our antique "mall". I'll
let him share his side of it, but suffice to say that even at 40% off , the
prices were still about double book price. Must be that "New Math".
Couldn't get the M's game on TV either night, but Al kept buying us food , so
we still remained happy.
Thanks to Doug , Al and Michelle for sharing time with us...the familytoadshad
a blast on Independence Weekend!!

weekend winds down as Big Al Cummings rides off into the sunset ... not
really ... that would be west and he'd get kinda wet!! Rides north
after, hopefully, a weekend of entertainment from the Toad's 2 cats if
not from the 2 legged human creatures he surrounded himself with for a
couple days.
Our trip up the coast included a stop in Yachats
where the Toadettes, Alexa and John, wanted to get sprayed by what we
call "the blow hole" ... the surf crashes in and forces spray into the
air through a hole in a rock like a whales blow hole. They we just
eating it up but I'm not so sure who enjoyed it more, them or us!!!
Of course cardboard was hand delivered shortly after Al and
Michelle's arrival and they hit me with 9 super hits to the 59T's
including Kubek, Schoendienst, Doby, Pinson, Jensen, and Newcombe!!! So
thanks go out to those sneaky two!!
Also must thank Al again for
the Grub on Saturday ... no, not Johnny Grubb ... FOOOOD, EATS,
FEEDBAG!!!
Hope the 2 had a good enough time to merit the time and
mileage, I know I did ... of course, for myself, it wasn't much
mileage!
Guess that'll do it fer now ... Doug

OBCers --
My wife and I are headed East for our ten-year anniversary this week. We
are dropping the ankle-biters in Chicago with the grandparents and
continuing on to New York for a few days. All we want to do is eat where
there is no kids menu and sleep late. Since neither of us has been to NY,
we thought it would be worth a look. We'll stop through Chicago on the way
back for a few days, but I doubt I'll have a lot of time for an OBC
get-together with the Chi-town contingent. My brother is having a baby
this week, so with the baptism and other commitments, I'll be hard pressed
to spring loose. If by chance I can, I'll call David, Joel, or another
Chicago OBCer. I'm leaving tomorrow for a few days for work, coming home
in time to pack, then heading out. I'll talk to you guys when I get back!!

On the realisic side of things, two great NY experiences (for food at least) are Wo Hop in Chinatown--in the basement, not upstairs, on Mott St. (#17) near Park Row, and worth the wait-- and then a Cappucino and dessert at La Bella Ferrara (Walk up Mott to Canal St., cross over, make a left then the next right to #108 Mulberry) All at OBC prices! Plus you can walk around Little Italy for a bit--it's great on a summer night.

Clarke. The original the pictures are black and white on a grey white stock. They
were reprinted several times ...some green and white, some on a more white
shiney stock printed in black, blue, and brown. I only know mine are original
because I got the first ones from my dad who got them from an exhibit machine
in 1948. No why does the SCD catalogue, at least my 2000 version, chose to
list them under Baseball's Great instead of under Exhibits where they belong. -

The Dodgers were famous for picking and making stupid draft picks in the

The Phillies in the early and mid '50s had two tryouts with promising
Hank Aaron and Al Kaline...instead they signed Tom Qualters (won 1 game for
the Phils in his career) and they passed on Aaron because they were still
wonderfully racist (Campy, Day, and Paige also had tryouts with the Phils). In the
late '50s the Phils offered Yaz a $90000 bonus and Boston offered $100000, Yaz
told the Phils if they matched the offer he would be a Phillie...we
didnt...could you imagine the lineup in 1960...Kaline, Aaron, Yaz?

The phillies had many nicknames over the years...Originally the Worchester
Ruby Legs (sometimes known as the Brown Stockings) they moved to Philadelphia
and were called the Phillies...They were called the Quakers for awhile in the
late teens and early 20s...in 1942 they were the Phils.
In 1944 the Phillies were sold to Robert Carpenter, a millionaire. One of the
first things that Carpenter did was to try to help change the image of the
Phillies so he held a contest to rename the team. 5,064 entries were received
and the name Blue Jays was chosen. Noone paid any attention to the name change
including the team itself (the jerseys were still written as Phillies because
it was too costly to change them). The nickname was officially dropped at the
end of the 1949 season.

poor/fair/good condition. None of them look too bad,
but the seller didn't make mention in the title of any
high numbers. It turns out that there is one included

I'd go for it, but I am holding back after paying a

means it will be delivered sometime next week. I will have extremely limited
access to email this weekend. In the meantime, the people here in Durham (Go
Bulls!) have asked me to extend my business trip here until July 22 (I was
originally scheduled to come home on July 18). I am planning to return to Newburgh

be relocating my office from IBM East Fishkill to IBM Poughkeepsie. On
Thursday, July 24, I will be flying from LaGuardia Airport in New York to Chicago
O'Hare for the 2003 Phi Kappa Sigma national executive board conference. I'll
flying out of LGA at 10:00 AM, and will arrive in O'Hare at 11:47 (they're 1
hour behind us in Chicago, for some reason). Regrettably, I will not be able
attend the 2003 National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City, NJ.

To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: directorth@aol.com
Hi gang - lengthy ramble follows:
Went to a card show today; a dealer recommended a card store nearby. I went &
was impressed by the size of the place. I then asked the owner about 50's &
60's commons; he goes behind the counter & then stares at me. He refused to put
any boxes on the counter for me to even look through - saying - and this is a
direct obscene quote: "Customers come in here and fuck up my inventory".
Seems he expects to take your list pull the cards (!) & then move on from there.
He was complaining about "so-called experts" who mess up "his" cards. I was
stunned - told him I had a huge list & didn't want to waste his time by having
him pull cards I wasn't going to buy. He just shook his head , saying "that's
the way it is". Needless to say, I walked out, telling him no card store I've
ever been in has treated a customer that way - and I told him his store was a
joke. Then, he FOLLOWED ME OUT OF THE STORE - yelling at me! One of his
memorable quotes was "no one does things like me" (duh) - and I'm not kidding - "my
cards are in boxes". (gee, no one has ever thought of that).
So, good luck to him, located in a rundown building next to a flea market &
auto salvage yard, in a bad part of town; I hope this scumbag goes out of
business in a hurry.
Has anyone else ever experienced a store like this?? I've never heard of a
card store where the customers weren't allowed to look through the cards.
Needless to say I will NEVER return to that place.

From: "Grant Rainsley"
And things were going so well.
Daughter Kate was off to Church Camp, so Jenny and I planned a full 2 week
run. Lots to do...siding the cabin, etc. We had been waiting since November
for the guy on island with a backhoe to remove a large stump, do the
backfill, and take care of our burn pile. He had said he would have it done
by January, but unfortunately I didn't pin him down to WHICH January he had
in mind. The concept of "Island Time" is alive and well on Slavery Island.
So, while the builder and I were doing the siding, Jenny did the backfill by
hand. Too late in the year for the burn pile. Then she set her sights on the
stump, and started digging it out by hand. One week into the trip, she made
a run back over to town (Powell River) for fresh supplies. So far, so good.
Beer supply had dwindled, so the timing was wonderful.
The next day, back to work on the stump. One root let go and snapped back,
and of course struck her right in the eye. First time she had forgotten to
wear her goggles. Back to Powell River for a trip to the hospital to have it
checked out. Great service, in at noon, out at 12:30. Back to the island,
eye patched and leaking, but luckily no serious damage. Sure put a damper on
her activities, as she couldn't stand to be in the bright sun for the rest
of the week.
As for me, hardly any blood spilled at all, and my limbs are intact. And
yes, we'll be going back for more abuse the last couple of weeks in August.

Ken (and others),
If you're in the minority, I'm right there beside you.
I have always thought that taking a pair of scissors
to a piece of memorabilia would only make it
I have had a few instances where I have had the
following type of conversation with a dealer:
He: "What kind of cards are you looking for?"
Me: "Old stuff."
He: "I've got some 198x rookie cards here..."
Me: "No, sir...I'm talking about older stuff than
that. You know, like when the Dodgers played in
Brooklyn and guys played for $12 thousand a season."
He: "Hey, I've got a game-used card of (insert '50s
star's name). It's his (insert whatever piece of
baseball history was butchered). I'll give you a good
deal on it...how 'bout $40?"
Me: "Yeah, that's really nice, but it's not what I
collect. That card came out two years ago."
He: "But he played in the '50s..."
Me: "But the card isn't from the '50s."
And on and on.
Come to think of it, I remember a particular seller
who knew that I collected vintage Steelers, and was
always trying to get me to buy his randomly-inserted
autograph cards or game-used stuff, despite the fact
that every time I saw him, I would remind him that if
the card wasn't in its present form prior to about
1978, I wasn't even going to consider it. But, he
kept it up until I just quit stopping anywhere near
his table (at both card shows and the flea market).
I've grown weary of those dealers who seem to be under
the impression that all collectors are going apesh**
over these "lotto-style" insert cards. Personally, if
I wanted that guy's autograph I'd have gotten it
personally. If I wasn't there to get it, I don't want
it. But hey, if you like collecting cards of pieces
of a bat that was never swung in a major league game,
that's your business and I have no quarrel. But don't
automatically assume that I'm going to be willing to
drop any amount of money to get it.
Sorry for the rambling, but I tend to get that way
when I think about these things. And don't get me
started on graded cards...
Take care,

Hi all... Friday must have been National Bad Customer Relations day for card
shops. A long-time favorite card shop of mine in Omaha has been The Catcher's
Mitt. A couple years ago, it changed ownership with a guy in his early 70s
purchasing it from my very burned-out friend and former owner, Jim Daly. I've
only been in the place a few times in the past couple years, as it's mostly
consignment auction of UV stuff that tends to be overpriced and underneeded.
However, on Friday, I stopped in just to reacquaint myself. Well, the auction
was gone, replaced instead by his own cards that were priced way out of line
with todays market. The new owner wasn't there but his granddaughter and her
boyfriend were running the shop. After quickly looking around, I thought I
might be able to salvage the trip by picking up a couple cards of Kirby Puckett
that were missing from my collection. I handed them the two cards, which didn't
have any price on them, and watched them fumble around trying to find a
price. When they failed, even with the big book, I explained to them what sets
they were from and where they should be listed. I had figured that they were
worth a buck each to me. High "book" was $4 on one, $.50 on the other and so
they said they wanted half-book on 'em... $2.25. I didn't have any change on me
so I asked if they would take $2 for them. To my utter astonishment, his
granddaughter said "No"! I couldn't believe that for a freakin' quarter, the same
geniuses who couldn't even find the price of the cards five minutes earlier
were driving business right out the door. As I left, I said a quiet "goodbye"
to the shop... it'll be the last time I visit it until yet another owner gets
ahold of it.
Unbelievable indeed... Take care,

Subject: Question about eBay seller and shipping
To: obc ramblings
From: Matthew
Hey all,
I recently won a hammered 33 Goudey Hornsby for $23 from a seller--it was probably nailed to a
wall at some point and the only way you could lower its value now would be to lose it entirely. No
postage cost in the auction listing, so I crossed my fingers and bid. On checkout, he added $5.25
for priority mail and insurance. The actual cost, perhaps, but overkill for something that's
already dead. I don't mind it TOO much, since the total is under my high bid, but I certainly
would have bid less originally (or perhaps not at all). I >am< going to ask for a cheaper option
and will remember to ask before bidding in the future, but a couple questions present themselves.
1) Have any of you protested a lot based on exorbitant postage and been successful? In some cases,
it's a clear way to get back the eBay costs--in others, it actually cuts into eBay's take because
buyers bid a correspondingly low amount. I think it'd be hard for eBay to do much about it--the
seller could say, "I value my work time at $X/hour and charge accordingly."
2) Long shot--anyone bought from this seller? Name Joseph A Kozlik, eBay ID alyanakoz. ~1000
rating, has a bunch of pre-war auctions running right now. Any of you ask for a shipping break
from him before?
Do you Yahoo!?

I too think the whole idea of destroying a historic piece of memorabilia
to sell for profit is revolting. As some of you know I collect prewar
bats and, for me at least, paying $100 or more for a chip of a bat (or
scrap of a jersey) makes no sense. I can, for the same or less money, buy
a nice autographed store model bat that really represents the player.

Instead of using 1000 pieces of Babe Ruth's bat as a lottery prize, they
should keep the bat in one piece and distribute 1000 lucky coupons. If you
have a coupon you get to take 10 swings with the real bat. Maybe have your
picture taken with it.

Hi, Guys!
I share the previously voiced concerns about destroying memorabilia (and
creating sham memorabilia) for the sake of making a buck.
Why not do the following? Take a nice vintage card (such as a 1952 Mantle)
and shred it both horizontally and vertically, making about 200 small
rectangular pieces. You can then insert them into 200 UV Mantle cards. Then
take these 200 cards and shred them, making 40,000 pieces. You can then
insert them into UV cards, sell them for $25 each as genuine
second-generation 1952 Mantle cards, and make a bundle.
Wow! Anyone want to contribute their 1952 Mantle?

Is there anyone who is going to the National who could keep an eye peeled
for 2 cards for me? These two would finish 2 prewar sets for me. One is
card #114 from the 1949 MP & Co. set (Gil Coan) and the other is the Carl
Hubbell card from the 1936 S & S game card set. The Coan should be had
for just a few bucks in OBC condition and the Hubbell, probably around $40.
I haven't seen either of these on Ebay for almost a year. Payback would
definitely be in order and of course I'll gladly pay any costs and postage.

First off...Memorabilia???....gimme a break. If

Oh, what I would give for

Rather than the Babe's bat in a 1000 pieces, they should use the one Sammy
Sosa just broke.
When I first got back into collecting maybe 2-3 years ago, I saw an article
in a Becketts stating that people where finding what could be cork in Manny
Ramirez's Bat card. To say the least I couldn't stop laughing about this for a
while. Needless to say I don't have any GU stuff. Then last year a guy from the
neighborhood came around during Garage sale weekend and was looking to trade
his GU stuff for some of my 1968's. At the time I wasn't very far in collecting
these years, and since I had already read that article I knew which direction
I would be going in collecting.. NOT GAME USED

Subject: Redpath auction (update)

From: "Steve Rittenberg"
Hi all. Three things to tell you about:
1) Letter to dealers asking for donations
2) Dealers that will receive the letter
3) Donations received
1. About 6 weeks ago, I volunteered to write a letter we can use when we
approach dealers and ask for donations to our upcoming auction to benefit
Rick Redpath's family. Here's the final version:
Hi. Most of you know me through OBC (www.oldbaseball.com). For 13 years
we've prided ourselves on being a community rather than just a group of
people devoted to cards. In the past, the community has banded together to
help its members in need due to illness or misfortune. And when we lose one
of our members, it is a loss all of us feel deeply. A few years back, we
lost one of our brothers, Kevin Lohse. At that time we decided to hold a
members-only auction to raise funds toward college expenses for his young
children. I was not part of the group then but I understand that some of you
donated cards to this auction, fully understanding that all the proceeds
would go to this worthy cause.
On April 26, we lost another of our brothers. Rick Redpath was a person who
touched all who knew him. Because Rick also has young children, we are
reviving the idea of holding an auction with the proceeds to go to the
family. This time, we will be auctioning items via ebay, in order to
attract the widest possible audience and raise maximum support. Again, we
are asking the dealer community to look into their hearts and consider
donating some cards to this cause. We will gratefully acknowledge your
support in the auction description and in a letter to our members.
Much time has already gone by but we are hoping to get the auction process
moving along. We intend to begin ebay auctions after the National and
continue them until we run out of donated material.
If convenient, we can pick up donated items at the National. Otherwise,
donations should be sent to:
Redpath Auction

Please contact me with your general questions or concerns but note that Ken
Morganti (cardcollector@aol.com) will be the person actually posting the
auction items.
Steve Rittenberg
2. I also put together a list of dealers to be contacted about donations:
Kevin Savage
Bill Henderson
Roger Neufeldt
Kurt Turdot
Walt Edwards
Nick Kirksey
Bob Wetzel
Mike Wheat
Steve Brandenburg
Bill Huggins (House of Cards)
John Morrison
Greg Fisher
Chandy Greenholt
William Chappell
Johnny Hustle
Dave Levin (gfg.com)
JD Heckathorn
Dave Murray
Ron Barrett
Playball (Las Vegas)
Jimmy Cardascia (White Plains)
IF THERE ARE OTHER DEALERS THAT YOU WANT TO CONTACT ON YOUR OWN, YOU MAY USE
ANY OR ALL OF THIS LETTER AS YOU SEE FIT. NO PRIOR CONSENT IS NEEDED FROM
3. At a show this weekend, I handed a copy of the above letter to five
dealers: Barrett, Kirksey, Huggins, Chappell and Brandenburg. I got two
answers of "I'll bring something to the National", two donations and one guy
I need to follow up with.
a. Nick Kirksey donated two 1958 Mickey Mantle All-Star cards, both in great
b. Ron Barrett donated a long list of items: 2 dozen 1966 Venezuelan cards,
20 boxers from the 1956 Adventure card set, 4 Johnston Braves cards, 60 & 61
Fleer cards including two Cobbs, Bazooka All-Time Greats including Ruth and
Gehrig, an 87 Donruss McGwire card and 1910 Ornate Oval Pin of Al Demaree.
Everything here (and anything else I collect) will be turned over at the
National to Ken Morganti to be auctioned off.

To all my brothers and sisters,
This is what makes this "family" so special. The really, really fine
people in it and I'm darn proud to be a part of it. I was one of the
beneficiaries of the groups' immense kindness and it's something I will
never forget. I've made it a solemn vow to meet as many of my family as
I can someday so I can thank you personally. It's going to take time,
but it will happen.
I've been saving my pennies for this one :-) This seems to
have the makings for being more successful that I had ever imagined.
Thanks so much Steve and Ken and the others who have donated cards,
time, whatever to this special event.
See you at the auction! Lynn

Subject: memorabilia cards for vintage players?
To: darren.Rovell@espn3.com
From: John Collins
Hi Darren,
Very interesting article of yours on espn.com. I am a
longtime collector of vintage (pre-1980) baseball
cards. I collect only older cards, with an interest
in sets and individual cards of baseball hall of
famers and other stars. I collected recent and newly
issued cards up to a point in the early 1990's, but
eventually began to focus only on the older material
because of the direction that the hobby was taking
with the insert cards, "game-used" chase cards, etc.
I am now a member of an online card trading club
called "OBC" (Old Baseball Cards -
www.oldbaseball.com) that is composed of like-minded
individuals who collect only older material with a
longing for the good old days, both in sports and in
the sportscard hobby.
My question on your article concerns the new
memorabilia cards that feature "game-used" material
from older hall of famers and superstars. Your
article is mostly about the football card industry as
it is today, but there seem to be just as many
game-used products for older ballplayers, including
names like Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, even Babe Ruth
and Ty Cobb. In your research, did you run across any
material on how these cards were produced? Obviously
there were no "game-worn" stations or events back in
the days of some of these ballplayers to mass-procuce
memorabilia cards, but the questions already
surrounding the industry and process lead to questions
about how these older memorabilia cards are produced
as well. When this trend first started about 7 or 8
years ago, people were appaled enough at the idea of
Upper Deck shredding an authentic Babe Ruth jersey or
Jimmie Foxx's bat just so they could be glued into
cards. A couple of years ago, an original Christy
Mathewson jersey was said to be up on the chopping
block. There can't be more than 2 or 3 of those even
in existance! At any rate, I had heard a story
earlier that a Whitey Ford jersey that was supposed to
be "original, game-worn" was actually a jersey that he
had worn in an old timers game. I would think that
collectors of this type of material had the same
reaction to that as do kids today when they find out
that Michael Vick wore somebody else's jersey on his
shoulders for 20 seconds.
Thank you for helping to expose this problem in the
trading card hobby. Even if the game-worn racket were
more legitimate, it makes no sense for any card of
Ichiro to be worth more than one of my original Mickey
Mantle cards, but sadly that is the case today.

To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: Chris Stufflestreet
For those of you that weren't aware, I have been
building a website that covers vintage cards for more
than three years now. While I have been building the
site, I have been writing newsletters and expounding
my observations and twisted ideas of how the hobby
should be.
I started out on this project because I have an end
goal in mind: I hope to one day become a writer with
articles in the hobby publications and a small amount
of respect within the hobby. At one time, I had
planned to write a book about the hobby and may still
follow that dream eventually. For the time being,
however, I have decided to take my history of the
hobby (linked on the OBC links page) and make a
booklet out of it. This way, I can have something
printed that I can sell and use as a sample to pass
along to editors in the hope that they might be
willing to use me as a freelancer. A very nice lady
has been dealing with me -- I am being very particular
about the proofreading and editing process -- and is
almost ready to begin printing them up.
My original idea was simple...I was going to print up
a few copies and surprise some of the people I trust
to solicit feedback on the project, and use that
feedback to determine whether the booklet would be
something I could sell on my website. Now that I'm
getting close to that point, I have begun to realize
that I belong to a community of friends, collectors
and traders that we call OBC. Now that I am about to
get them printed, I'll ask if anybody wants to add one
to their reference shelf. I don't have a cost yet per
booklet, but it will probably end up being around $4.
If interested, let me know. I'll have Miss Carol
print up another copy. If enough people express
interest, I can see about getting enough to distribute
one to each OBC member.
Maybe I'm just crazy for entertaining a thought, but
the idea of seeing my name in print appeals to
me...it's another step toward my goal.
Take care,

What a great game. What an entirely irritating game. This game was so irritating
to me that I could not enjoy it even while watching great stuff goingon.
Every single play, every situation was referenced to the home field advantage
in the World Series. Every interview was another chance to ask about
how, since this game meant something, the play or stratagy was different (ie.
better). If the interviewee did not gush great things about the new format,
he was chided somewhat, (Garrett Anderson, Mike Scioscia). Fox went out
of their way to show how they have saved the All Star game from extinction
but sadly, they only gave me a headache.

1. About 6 weeks ago, I volunteered to write a letter we can use

to benefit
Rick Redpath's family. Here's the final version:
Hi. Most of you know me through OBC (www.oldbaseball.com). For
13 years
we've prided ourselves on being a community rather than just a
group of
people devoted to cards. In the past, the community has banded
together to
help its members in need due to illness or misfortune. And when
we lose one
of our members, it is a loss all of us feel deeply. A few years
back, we
lost one of our brothers, Kevin Lohse. At that time we decided
to hold a
members-only auction to raise funds toward college expenses for
his young
children. I was not part of the group then but I understand that
some of you
donated cards to this auction, fully understanding that all the
would go to this worthy cause.
On April 26, we lost another of our brothers. Rick Redpath
was a person who
touched all who knew him. Because Rick also has young children,
we are
reviving the idea of holding an auction with the proceeds to go
to the
family. This time, we will be auctioning items via ebay,
in order to
attract the widest possible audience and raise maximum support.
Again, we
are asking the dealer community to look into their hearts and consider
donating some cards to this cause. We will gratefully acknowledge
support in the auction description and in a letter to our members.
Much time has already gone by but we are hoping to get the auction
moving along. We intend to begin ebay auctions after the
National and
continue them until we run out of donated material.
If convenient, we can pick up donated items at the National.

From: "Joe Isaac"
Hey everyone,
I was sorting through some cardboard the other day and came across the '72
card of Billy Martin, #33. Notice how Billy leans on the bat with his
extended middle finger down the bat handle for a subtle one-finger salute.
Remembering other faux paux by players (and Topps for that matter), I went
on a hunt to remember the others I came across years ago. Here is the brief
list I came up with....
Claude Raymond ('66 #586 and '67 #364) - How poor Claude could go unnoticed
by flying low in back-to-back years. Man, pull up your fly!! I realize
that occasionally Topps would use the same photo on successive years, but
this was no mistake since Claude gave Topps 2 different poses!!
Tommy John ('69 #465) - On this pose, Tommy is showing offf his
follow-through for the camera. There is only one problem - the ball was
still in his glove! I know there are other pitcher shots like this, but
this one stands out in my mind.
In the words of Homer Simpson, D'oh!!
Here are 2 more (and a little bit of trivia).....
How about Aurelio Rodriguez ('69 #653)...or is it? Actually, it's not
Aurelio. Anyone know who's picture is on the card?
And Dick Ellsworth ('66 #447)....try again Topps. This was one big goof.
Anyone know who this is?
Have fun. Maybe others can come up with other cardboard goofs.

I have been informed that Jimmy "Catfish" Parker and Brad Fox would like to
be moved to the OBC Inactive list. Per the OBCAC Rules of Conduct, I must
inform the membership of their request and call for comments. Following
that, the OBCAC will take a vote on whether to grant their request.
Here is the pertinent section of the OBCAC Rules of Conduct:
OBC Inactive Members Procedures:
1. Members will not count against the OBC membership cap.
2. A members email link will be listed on a separate page at the website,
and not included with the current OBC members. Your entry will include your
name and email link only. A link to your wantlist or homepage is not
3. Members are granted access to all the OBC mailservers.
4. Members may keep their entry in the OBC Bios page.
5. Members will not be listed in the OBC Directory which includes current
members mailing address and phone numbers.
6. Members must respond to all regular OBC Membership Polls. The
guidelines for Inactive Members are the same as regular members concerning
Membership Polls.
7. Members may not serve on the OBCAC (Advisory Committee).
Current OBC members may move to the inactive membership list by contacting
any OBCAC member. Former OBC members may apply for OBC Inactive Membership
by contacting any OBCAC member. After the general membership is notified
of the former members request and polled for comments, a majority vote of
OBCAC is needed for admission to OBC Inactive. To return to regular OBC
Membership, an OBC Inactive member would follow the "Former Member"
instructions listed in the OBC Rules For Conduct. (Amended by AC meeting
of 8/00)
- Last year the OBCAC discussed the abolition of "inactive status" however,
only 4 of the required 7 members voted so no action could be taken.
- There is no longer a membership cap. However, until the OBCAC decides to
change its Rules of Conduct, it is improper for me to state otherwise.

That was Ken Hubbs who appeared on the 1966 #447 card. Hubbs was killed in
a plane crash after his rookie season (1962 or 63 I think). Not sure why
Topps still had a picture of him laying around in 1966 though.
My favorite good was the 1964 Phillies rookie card of Rick Wise and Dave
Bennett (#561). On the back of the card for Dave Benett it says "The 19
year old curver baller is just 18 years old".

I respectfully disasgree here: the 1966 Dick

Topps really had some egg on its face with this card,
because Hubbs had perished in a plane crash prior to

problem is ulcerative colitis. However, due to a family history of
colon cancer (my father's father died of colon cancer) combined with
colon problems on my mother's side, and my current diagnosis of
ulcerative colitis, the Dr.'s have informed me that it is more a
matter of when, not if, I will test positive for colon cancer. With
such a prognosis, you can imagine that I am real good about going in
for my annual colonoscopy, starting in my late 30s. For those of you
that have had the test, or know someone who has, the test is not bad,
it is the day before prep that is the problem. This applies to
the "invasive" colonoscopy, not the new "virtual" colonoscopy, which
I am not a candidate for. I have been scheduled, for over a month,
to go in the hospital tomorrow for this year's test. I took off work
today an tomorrow. That was a challenge as I have been working 7
days a week, the last few months. It cost me some business.
Additionally, my father was due to pick me up at 6:30 in th emorning
to take me to the hospital, since they knock you out for the
colonoscopy, and you cannot drive home. At 4:00 today, I got a call
from the Dr. office that my regular Dr. office had once again fouled
up and had not cleared the test with the insurance company. Test
postponed. Now remember, I started the test prep this morning (much
worse than the test itself) and had missed a day of work. Dad had
cleared his schedule and I still have to see the Dr. tomorrow for an
unrelated problem, they were dealing with at the same time. So now I
have to re-schedule and miss another 2 days of work. To add insult
to injury, the prep kit, has previously been provided by the hospital
as part of the procedure. As of yesterday, they now charge for it.
So since I used up 1/2 of the prep kit before being notified, I now
have to buy the kit. I am told it is real cheap, but it is the
principal of it. A change in my insurance a couple of years ago, is
how I ended up with the inept office that fouled up the paperwork. I
am in an HMO, which stands for Horrible Medical Operations. I think
I had reported some problems I had with this office a few months ago,
when the nurse actually busted a needle off in my ass. Sorry for the
visual. They turned my ass into a pin cushion that day. People go
and shoot up Post Offices or places of employment (or former places
of employment), but I do not recall hearing about anyone going after
a Dr. Surprising, as their errors can really screw up someone's
life. I know this is merely inconvenient, not to mention, cost me a
lot of money, for the missed work and other costs, but it has me
really pissed off. Among the prep was a no solid food from 9:00 AM
on. Although I often skip lunch, the prep that clears out your
system, made me real hungry. So I know I have been irritable today.
Even with that, there is no excuse for the Dr. office screwing this
FYI, the expression "Going Postal" which started after the first post
office shooting, was caused by someone I graduated high school with.
Yes, that is correct, the first Post Office shooter was in my
graduating class. I live in the Detroit area. Does anyone want to
mess with me?
Thanks for letting me vent.

"HOM" is the OBC Hall of Mediocrity -- a place on the
OBC website to honor those players which we all
remember but who also have little chance of making
Cooperstown. Each OBC member is allowed to sponsor one
player of their choosing, if they like.
This brings up a point that I tried to address over a
year ago. There hasn't been much done with the HOM
lately. In fact, Ryne Duren isn't even profiled on
the HOM page because back sometime after Dan turned
loose the webmaster responsibilities, the HOM kind of
went defunct. Is there anybody out there that would
have an interest in reviving (and upkeeping) the HOM
portion of the website?
If so, let me know.

For the new kids in the group-
On the OBC website, go to OBC Specials, and scroll down to the HOM. You'll
see some great names in there. OBC members may submit one player, must have
had at least one card issued prior to 1980, and zero chance of making the
real Hall. Please provide a short note as well with the reason why you
chose your guy. I'll dig up cards of your nominee and send scans and the
info to our webmaster, Wayne Delia.

Something about that looks fishy. First of all, I don't consider your eBay
account "inactive", since I was able to pull up a few auctions you've bid on
within the last month or so. I guess you've gotta get on there and bid every
other day at least to remain "active"? Secondly, who would want a name like
'swampy3'? Clearly, 'swampy' or even 'swampy1' would be a much better choice
Sounds like they're trying to get you to hand over your eBay password at some
point, so they can have your ID. I'd report this to eBay,

Well the 14 people from last year has shrunk down to only 1 (myself)
that are interested in OBC member cards apparently :-( Even Glenn
didn't reply.
As far as goof ups on baseball cards (Is there any of BB or FB cards?) I
can think of the 61-63 Boog Powell & the 89 Fleer? Cal Ripken which
both had writing on the bat's end, in addition to the others mentioned
such as 6? Landrum, 69 Angels bat boy etc. Then there's the one of
Braves pitcher Lew/Lou Burdett (sp?) with glove on wrong hand from the
late 50s. If you count other 81's & up (most of you don't) the 81
Donruss set had several goofs like reversed negatives showing RH batters
batting left etc. (Tim Flannery?).
What yr card was that of Johnny Unitas where it mentioned his hair was
too tight? That funny pic was left out of my 2nd copy, I guess since
it was a reprint :-( Anybody know of others left out of the reprinted
Nice to hear Rickey Henderson is back in MLB!

On Thursday which was my first day of work, I made a great effort to

was getting ready to help run a committe meeting on Asian baseball.
Because of my duties, I was able to see Rob in hallways but never
really got to sit down with him. It was nice to introduce myself and
put another face to email ramblings and thanks.
Getting back to my position my next two encounters were with
childhood hero Ryne Duren. The second time he autographed his new
book and a baseball for me. A very pleasurable person to deal with,
as was Charlie Metro, Nick Willite, George Frazier, Rolland Hemond,
and Byron "Mex" Johnson, a 92 year old Negro ball player. All which
graciously autographed ball for me. I found out later that this is
not what SABR about and was kind of chastised for it. It will
probably be my last year as SABR because of it even though I have had
several memebers who says this is a rather Acceptable manner at
conventions and have urged me to stay. The only bad expierence I had

taken by someone who also didnt know this was what sabr is about.
Also managed to tick off wife by adding to library with books by Ryne

From: "Geordie Calvert"
Hi all,
This is the last call for participation in the semi-annual OBC membership poll.
I have yet to hear from the following OBC members - these include those
on both the active and the inactive list. I have sent a general note tothe
membership and also a personal note to each. If anybody knows of any circumstance
that may preclude any of these guys not being able to get in touch
with me, or knows them personally and can give them a call, please letme
know. For instance, I know Doc Ball has been battling health issues - has
anyone spoken with him lately?
Anyway, I need to get the status of the following. If I don't hear anything
soon, I will forward the remaining names to the AC - per OBC Rules of Conduct,
they will be removed from membership.
John Ball, Steve Hitzeman, John Storman, Joe Sweet, Art Wainwright, Tom Williams,
Lorin Anderson, Iggy Gonzalez, John Hathcock, Greg Kuhn, David Nathan.
Please let me know as soon as possible so these gentlemen remain part of the

Mike (via OBC),
I got all the emails you sent recently and replied to each one. Either
your inbound filter is killing them, or I have a problem with my
outbounds. Has anyone else noticed any issues with emails from me or
sent Mike Diamianit something that he did not receive?????
Thanks for checking, and Mike we are fine just very wet!

Subject: Booklet update and a waiver wire...
To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: Chris Stufflestreet
My booklet is going through its final proof now, and
the lovely Miss Carol showed me a beautiful cover that
has been designed for it. If has some images of cards
and packs over a U.S. flag, bat and cathcers' mitt. I
was impressed. The final product will be 12 pages
long and in full color.
But I have one question to pose to the group (or at
least the OBCAC)...AS it is now, there is nothing on
the back cover. Is there a problem with using an OBC
logo (I'm thinking of using one of Guru's stickers
because it's perfect) on the back? Or does this go
against the grain of the OBC rules? The last thing I
want to do is to give any sense of impropriety because
I'll probably sell this booklet on my website, but I
feel this would give a little more recognition to OBC.
If it's OK, I'll get it set up, if not, I'll keep it
To those who have asked for a copy, I'll let you know
what they will cost me when they get printed. It
might be a couple of weeks, but I promise you'll hear
from me.
I've upgraded some of my '50s baseball sets and have
some availables.
1953 Bowman Color: 29, 34.
1955 Topps: 62, 70, 130, 137.
1954 Bowman football: 33, 104.
I also have two Kahn's cards for anybody looking to
fill some holes. From the 1964 Kahn's set, I have a
Woody Held card that has been torn in half (both
peices are here, but it's enough to make some
collectors cry).
The other one is from 1967, I think...it's John
Edwards, who appears in the '66 and '67 sets but since
the design is the same both years, I can't tell you
which on it is. The Kahn's logo at the top has been
cut off, but this one doesn't come in two pieces.
Have at 'em!
Take care,
I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. To view my online wantlist, visit: http://www.geocities.com/chrisstufflestreet/wantlist.html

Matt, (all)
I don't get to read most of your messages to the server. I get it
in Digest form and almost always it says "[This message is not
in displayable format]". In fact, I replied to this one via the
Yahoo!groups website (the only place I can read your
messages) and it didn't quote your original message like it
usually does. (I haven't edited anything below). I think it has
something to do with messages being sent out in HTML format
instead of text, but I could be wrong. There's a couple other guys
in the group that have the same results. (Ben Fisher and Doug
Chamberlain are two I noticed recently). TTYL,

Finally got to meet some of the guys! Kent, The Fugitive, Mattman, Terry D.,
and myself, met at the Montgomery residence for some swapping and camaraderie
on Saturday. Peter, sorry I missed you! Thanks to Kent and family for their
hospitality and for Kent pulling some strings to get us tickets to see
the Washington Wildthings at Falconi Field. A really great minor league ballpark
with giveaways every half inning. I have to mention that my ten year
old son was selected for an on field water balloon batting contest. Theirwinning
effort was awarded with a bottle of Dean's water which now sits inour
shrine next to the souvenir baseball autographed by the Wildthing's mascot
appropriately named "The Wildthing". Kent also finished off my 68 Topps
game set with card #6 Clemente! There was a lot of cardboard going aroundthe
table and I'm not sure who hit me with what exactly but I was able to put
a serious dent in the 67 set and picked up some 65's and 66's as well. Not
sure if I was able to help the other guys much, seems we are all into the
same areas of our sets at this time but I'll be watching for the startersets
coming up in the future! A really special thanks to Richard who "hit"my
son Adam with a 3200 count box of UV baseball, football, basketball andhockey.
I haven't seen Adam since we got home, figure he'll come out of his
room sometime next week! Thanks to all of these guys for the cardboard, but
more importantly their friendship! Isn't it great that we can get together,
having never met before, and feel like we know each other somehow? The Robert
Morris show is coming again this fall and I hope to get together with
the group again then. I can probably talk Suzanne into hosting a swap meet,
if I can't, Adam will!
Thanks again guys!

Full day today, both on the card and activity fronts. Sean McGowan and I started the day by
converging on Jim Hatch's house, who'd courteously reserved tee times at Windham CC near his home
in Nashua, NH. We pulled the enviable 10:50 start time (that's right, we want ALL the sun you can
give us--ALL of it!) and spent 4+ hours making the turns, dips, and hacks that befit an OBC golf
outing. I took inspiration from British Open winner Ben Curtis and finished third (*cough* out of
three), several strokes back of Sean and several more back of Jim. I claimed the third place
prize, a free doughnut from the clubhouse.
After the round of golf, we drove to T-Bone's for quality American dining, where the soda is
bottomless and the servers are on summer vacation. The repast ended perfectly timed to an evening
of baseball at Holman Stadium, home of the Nashua Pride. We met Bob Donaldson at the park and sat
along the third base line, enjoying the plentiful leg room and perfect evening. Bob threw a few
cards at us, my hit being a 1955 high number. Sean chipped in with a 53T archives #5. The game
started quickly, but bogged down somewhat in the middle, as the visiting Pennsylvania Road
Warriors batted around and produced six runs in the sixth inning. They withstood a minor rally in
the ninth to win 10-6. Player of the game: Penn's Gary Johnson. 3-5, 2B, HR, 3R, 3RBI. Most
notable names are former big leaguers Butch Hobson (Nashua Manager) and Rick Wise (pitching
coach). If we end up watching a baseball game in Atlantic City, we'll be seeing the Pride again as
they make a trip south.
Thanks for the cards and company, guys!

From: "Ken Morganti"
National attendees,
After some deliberation and major procrastination on my part, the time/place
for the National Swap Session is set (almost)
Where: Days Inn - Absecon/Atlantic City
224 E White Horse Pike (US 30)
Absecon, NJ 08201
When: Sat July 26th, 2003 from 7PM - midnight or so. (The show lets out at 6,
so you'll have an hour to find the place)
Cost: $150 for the room (not per person), plus whatever we can eat and drink
(pizza and soda). We are allowed to bring our own food if you're allergic to
I still have to sign the contract, which I'll do when I get into town and see the
room. This is what the guy at the hotel said to do. If you're in the area, please
come. If you're waiting for an invitation - YOU'RE READING IT NOW!! You may
volunteer to chip in for the cost of the room and pizza/soda, but no more than
$10-15. If you don't have any dupes, you can trade some of mine, but you may
be forced to drive home with whatever you can't get rid of at the swap ;-) If you
can only attend the National one day - Don't bother and come to this instead.
For the same price as admission to the show, you'll have a much better time,
the card prices are cheaper, and the food is better. I'll have the room set up for
25 people, but response to Kent Goto's poll so far has been lukewarm. If
you're thinking about dropping by, he's keeping score of all the where, when,
how and phone numbers. That's the up to the minute info as I have it. Hope to
see a bunch of you there Saturday! TAYL,
Ken M

While the British Open was being played overseas and the BC Open was being
played in New York, three of our own headed out to the links for the first
(hopefully annual) OBC Granite State Golf and Baseball Biathalon yesterday. Sean
McGowan, Spike Glidden and yours truly were the pioneer participants in this
unique event, a combination of playing 18 holes of golf and watching nine
innings of a professional baseball game. Here is one man's recap...
Spike and Sean arrived at my Na Hampsha home bright and early around 9:30.
Both brought their dupes boxes but I wasn't able to find anything, which made me
sort of relieved because I didn't have cardboard for them, either After
tearing ourselves away from the tele, we headed to Windham Country Club in
Windham, NH for 18 challenging holes of golf. Sean has golf shoes "older than I
am" and Spike came prepared with his training video in his golf bag! Weather
was a perfect 10: sunny, low 80 temps and light, swirling winds. Sean was
rolling along at even par until a shattered sand rake injured his pinky finger.
The injury definitely affected his game, but he still managed to hole the putt
of the day at the 18th, making a looooong putt for a par!
After the round, we did our best impression of Three Hungry Men and headed to
T-Bones in Hudson, NH for some good eats. The bread was warm, the beer was
cold, and the entree was delicious. From there, we headed to "Historic" Holman
Stadium in Nashua, NH for an Atlantic League contest between the Nashua Pride
and the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. There, we met up with Bob Donaldson and
took in the game. Holman is surrounded by pine trees, so every time I saw a
ball fouled off all I could think of were the golf balls taking the same
treeward flights earlier in the day :-) The final score was 10-6 in favor of the
Road Warriors, but the dizzy bat race was much closer. A notable rarity in the
game: one Penn player swung at a two strike pitch that hit him (squarely, I
might add). Instead of walking to first, he naturally had to walk to the
dugout. Mama said there'd be days like this!
Thanks to Sean, Spike and Bob for a great day. Hope we can do either (or
both) again real soon!
Happy Collecting!

Subject: 1st Annual Western Penn. OBC Get- together
To: OBC Ramblings
From: Terry Dietrick
This past Saturday Kent Montgomery hosted the first
annual OBC get together in Pittsburgh. It was a great
opportunity for some guys to meet their first OBC'ers
and some of us had the chance to meet our neighbors
for the first time. We had 6 attendees, our host Kent
Montgomery, Pittsburgher Jeff Sinclair, Eastern Penna.
members Richard Kimball and Matt Heilenman, from
Maryland Peter Mead and myself. 5 of us were to meet
at a mall show that was advertised in Buckett as a 30
dealer show. Right. There was a total of 1 and one
half dealers. Neither of them seemed interested in
selling anything. One of them wasn't even interested
in getting his few vintage cards out for us to look
at. He must have been too busy. Right. Then it was on
to Kent abode for some good old OBC cardboard tossing.
The big winner of the day, as Cap stated in an earlier
posting, was his son Adam. Adam was "given" and 3200
count monster box of UV cards from Fug! He said
something about trying to improve gas mileage on the
trip home. That will definately help! Adam's memorable
day continued that evening at the Wild Things Baseball
game where he was chosen to go onto the field for a
hitting contest. Small bats and water balloons. No
contest! All Star Adam rocked the house down by hittin
every water balloon thrown his way except the last
one, which was thrown quickly to get under the time
limit. He crushed every balloon! He did great! BUT HE
LOST TO A GIRL!!! She hit about half of the balloons.
We harrassed to guy running the contest and he said
something about us rooting against the girl. Poor Adam
got robbed! But he did get 3000 pieces of cardboard!
Part way through the baseball game, when the sun went
down, it started to get chilly and we all decided to
say our goodbye's and go homeward bound.
It was a great OBC event. I really enjoyed the entire
day. I want to thank Kent and Pam for the hospitality
and the great food. I hope we didn't make too big of a
mess? It was good to meet Peter, who had to leave
after the mall show and didn't get in on the cardboard
tossing, Cap, Fug, Mattman and Kent. All great guys!
Can't wait until next years event!

Subject: the pitts obc gathering
From: kimballrw@juno.com
hello group,
this past sat was the first anual pitts obc get together, hosted by kent montgomery and his wife cause im sure kent didnt cook all that food and desert for us huh kent?
the day started out as any other weekend, two sleepy cardahoulics meeting up in front of groud zero,or my front porch as my wife likes to call that slab of concrete-5:30 or more like 6:00 when we get it together and start blowing up the pike-270.6 miles to go-5 hrs and 16 mins says mapquest(ha ha we say).cruise set on 75 and then it never fails-the early morning wee wee,25 miles into the trip.
in for pee, breakfast for me i say-back on the road in 10 shakes, and we all remember the old saying.lots and lots and lots and lots of conversation(at least this hobby has lots to talk about),three tunnels,15 mountians, nothing to see but fog for miles and then 3 hours and 10 mins in another potty stop-were almost there!woo hoo!
map says washington,10 miles-then there on the overpass is the welcome to washington pa sign "hello white trash" written in 69 topps white paint, guess were there ?!
SIDE NOTE:IF YOU EVER GO TO KENTS,THE SIGN FOR HIS ROAD IS 4"x10"AND HIDDEN BEHIND A POLE.
easy to find his house and warm welcomes and handshakes abound, finally i can 7th inning strech my legs.he hands us boxes with hits to our lists and we didnt even unload the boxes from the car.nice looking 59 phillies team card in there-cool.
peters next to enter-hes enroute so we down to bus. with him,and he also hands us a few hits-some 72 topps hockey for me and those even had corners.sweet looking cards, printing press maybe?off to the mall show-ha!that sucked-dont ever make the trip to washington pa just to go to the "washington mall "show even if beckett says it has 30 dealers.
to the food court we go to meet up with terry dietrick, again passing out even more hits and we still havent gotten to the trade session at kents.
while back at the montgomerys the food was almost ready and we got down to giving that dining room table a weight test with about 50-60 thousand cards piled on top not to mention all the ones on the floor-wow what a diplay of obc willingness to try to help with hits as we all passed each others wantlist round and round-hits were flying back and forth as well as card stories and something about matt-man eating a horse?great food was abound and the desert was to kill for-gotta love butterscotch squares.
the sinclair boys arived and back at we went with even more cards to wade threw-i did give away a 3200 ct box of newv dupes (and im sure matts car was greatfull for less weight) to the younger sinclair, and dont let him kid ya-hes got lots of teeth-we all saw them.
we gathered our hits and what dupes were left and off to the wildthings game and when kent says he has tickets he ment to say "hey i got 3rd row box seats" for us to check out our first wild things game-very nice park and super easy to find-3300 seats so not crowded.sinclair jr did win and they gave the prize to the girl even thou we gave them a hard time.
all great days come to an end and this one was no exception,we said our goodbyes and gave a firm handshake, till next time we meet up with the pitts area obc members-
a tip of the hat is in order to kent and his wife for there fine hospitalities, terry, peter, jeff and jr for making this one of the most enjoyable trips matt-amn and i have made and we hope to see you guys in october for the big show.

What a great OBC type day. First this morning read an item that HOF
announcer Ernie Harwell is leading a walk on Sunday August 10 and the
forst 1000 to sign up for this no cost walk, get an autographed T-
Shirt and pin. This is the same day I am planning on going to
Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford to see the World Series of
Vintage BB. That evening, I am also getting together with a few
friends to go see the Beach Boys at Pine Knob (nka DTE Music
Theatre). Really looking forward to August 10.
Spoke to Mark Talbot on the phone today and we planned to meet at a
card show tomorrow where Mark's fav dealer, Harold, will be. He is
the one I got the world's "ugliest" Bowman's from, that
Steve "thanked" me for earlier today.
Ron Perry also called and then E-mailed to confirm we have non-
refundable tickets to the National for this weekend.
So plans to see a HOFer, go to multiple card shows, talk with OBCers,
arrange for atteendance at a World Series and a concert. Wish more
days coould be like this. Less than 2 weeks after that is the re-
scheduled visit to the hospital for the colonoscopy, so I will enjoy
that day even more so.
If anyone else wants to join me for the walk or the vintage game
(admission to Greenfield Village is around $18.50 per person now),
LMK. I may also be able to scrounge up more passes for the Beach
Lastly, the week after that, August 16-17 is the Woodward Dream
Cruise. For all the car buffs out there, this is the world's largest
car cruise. Supposedly up to 1,000,000 will be there. I can lodge a
couple of folks if they want to come to Motown for this.

Subject: Of all the gall...
To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: XTrJmx@aol.com
Hi all... just a quick note before calling it a night. Just as I was about to
go to bed last Friday evening, I got an intense pain in my right shoulder.
As the night went on (sleepless), it got worse and by 5 am I was feeling
nauseous and having a tought time breathing slowly/deeply. By the time 6 am rolled
around, I had the wonderful onset of dry heaves and profuse sweating. I'm not
the brightest bulb in the closet, but I figured I better call the nurse
hotline to see what might be going on. They told me I needed to call 911, as they
feared something might be going awry with my heart and I needed to get into
the ER ASAP. Well, I asked if it was ok if a family friend took me, as we lack
insurance and the idea of an ambulance bill didn't appeal to me, and they said
that was ok, but they better be there in five minutes. Sure enough, five
minutes later, they called again and reiterated that I needed to have 911 check
me out, so I gave in and called. Within about 2 minutes, 911 was there
(awesome response time!) and determined that I was not having heart problems (thank
goodness) so I signed papers and sent them on their way. As they left, my
friend was talking with my brother-in-law who is a clinical nurse practioner, and
he still strongly suggested going into the ER. By then, it was about 10:00
and I decided that we'd go ahead and do that, as I was a hurting unit.
Well, after arriving at the ER and getting hooked up to an IV, I described
all my symptoms and they immediately thought I might have had a gallstone
attack. Five x-rays and one long ultrasound session later, they confirmed that my
gallbladder was chock full of gallstones and needed to be addressed
immediately. They checked me in and by 5:00 I was on the operating table! Not exactly
the way I'd planned on spending my weekend! Anyway, I was out of surgery, sans
gall bladder, by 8:00 and have been recovering slow but steady. Today I was
able to be up on my own and walking about well, so I got to come home. My dad
drove down all night on Saturday night and has been a real help. My family
will be back home in a couple days and everything should return to as normal as
we get.
Hope you all had a better weekend than that! :-) Take care,

Subject: Booklet update
To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: Chris Stufflestreet
I'll recap for the benefit of our two new members...
I have written a short history of the hobby based on
my website (it's found on the OBC's "Links" page) in
booklet form. It's not very long, but is in full
color and looks very sharp (and the cover that has
been designed by the typesetter is very nice). It
will make a great addition to any hobbyist's reference
shelf, and you can even look snooty at a card show by
being able to say, "the guy that wrote this is a close
personal friend...and he thinks your `game-used' cards
are stupid." It's in the final stages and will be
printed very soon, probably this week.
My cost for the books is $4.34 apiece, so I'm asking
$5 including P/H to anybody who wants one. I'll even
autograph your copy if you request one. However, once
you see my autograph, you'll wonder what the hell it
says...but there is no way in the name of all that is
good and decent that I'll allow some cardmaker to cut
one up and make "limited-edition" chase cards. That
would just be wrong.
I don't have Paypal, so I'm doing this the
old-fashioned way: snail mail. If you'd like one, go
ahead and drop a five-spot to my address:
Chris Stufflestreet
1803 Louvre Dr
Jacksonville, FL 32221
If you'd like to surprise another OBCer, let me know.
To make it interesting, I'll even return his $5 if he
or she has already sent it. If you'd like mulitple
copies, that can be arranged as well.
I'm really happy to see this, because I still hope
that one day I can walk into a Barnes & Noble or
Books-a-Million and be able to take a book with my
name off the shelf.
Next step: a guide to collecting cards, told from the
standpoint of somebody who remembers when we used to
torture cards, including a chapter on flipping that
stack of 1988 Topps that has found its way into
EVERYBODY'S collection. Seriously.
Take care,

Hey guys,
As you can all see, I am NOT at the National... To put a long month into a
few lines, my best pal Winston the Sheltie started having seizures. We looked
out of the woods, but then he stopped eating. I took him to the hospital and
old age finally took its toll. Not easy to make that ultimate decision, but I
know that Winston is flipping cards upstairs with the big guy now.
Unbelieveable how hard that is. He's been with me through my divorce, my almost
remarriage and throughout OBC. Not a bad 14 years we had together. So that is why I
wasn't able to make the show. Now you guys who haven't been together better
have at least as good a time as I had last year. And DON'T let Al have a
map!!!! And deny that you know how to count if Earl is driving LOL...
On the other front, I should have stuff to Steve R (basketball) and Ken M
(your cards too) in the mail this weekend for the auction. A friend of mine
collects Thurman Munson stuff. He'll be bidding no matter what is up there, but
if anyone has anything Munson, he'll bid high! And if Kent is there, hang with
him, he finds all the good deals! Enjoy, I can't wait to read the ramblings
and Ken's multiple posts (look for the wizard hat)!

Sounded like a great one! I thought I'd also contribute here - Hal McCoy of the
Dayton Daily News was also inducted yesterday. The guy's a terrific writer who
pulls no punches, & tells it like it is. I've been fortunate to grow up reading
three Hall Of Fame writers from Dayton who have covered the Reds - Ritter
Collett, Si Burick, & now Hal. It's kind of amazing that a non-MLB city has had
three HOF writers .Every time I read what Aaron Boone said to Hal this spring
(refusing to let Hal quit because he's now almost completely blind), it makes me
respect what a good guy Aaron is too.

Hey Gang:
Well, too much work and not enough fun drove Davey to Atlantic City this past
weekend. The city needs some work but the National was quite an event. In
addition to about 15 OBC'ers in attendance on Friday and Saturday (let's see:
Bob Reed, Bob Pigeon, Ron Perry, Ed Schott, Mac Wubben, Matt Glidden, Steve
Rittenberg, Kent Goto, Mike Rich, Ken Morganti, Richard Kimball, -- I totally
missed Rob Fitts somehow! --and if I missed you I'm sorry.......) there were some
good deals to be had. Had a lot of fun helping Ed Schott dumpster dive for a
72 mazeroski, which turned up sooned than all expected and also helping Ron
Perry find some 55 bowmans at good guy Kurt Tourdot's table.....it was great
fun meeting some guys for the first time and seeing a few others again, oh yeah!
I missed the Saturday swap session due to some prior family engagements, but
was there in spirit. I'll make the swap session the next time I hit Ft.
Washington for sure.......I had saved up bucks since Xmas for this show and was
hoping to get a '68 Topps 3-d for the Topps type card collection but it was not
to be. "Settled" for a 68 Plaks checklist and 51 Connie Mack AS instead, plus
almost killed the 55 Topps set and 68 to boot--forgot to buy #598--Jerry May
(d'oh!) from '68 to kill that set but what the H. Picked up some other goodies
from Topps as well, like a 68 Tips from Topps booklet and some 69 stamp
albums. What a fab show! Even found a 66 Fleer Baseball Match/Don Drysdale type
Well, I have once again re-prioritized following a major show and am going to
concentrate almost solely on 50's and 60's Topps (regular issue and
otherwise) from here on out, with a dose of regular size type T-Cards thrown in for
diversity (essentially a "backs " collection). Watch this space for some waiver
wire deals soon! Guys-great to see you all and look forward to the next

Subject: Thank you's, the National, and combination of both
To: OBC-National@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com,
From: friar4@aol.com
I realize that I was somewhat elusive at the National, but there was a
good reason. After several months of intense job hunting combined with a feeble
attempt to decide whether or not to "really" retire (with a happy ending), my
wife and I really needed a vacation. Atlantic City would probably not have
been my first choice, but it was easy and matched up with the National. Some of
you know that I did make a brief appearance on Friday, but I owed it to Tricia
(the Lady Friar) to spend most of the time with her. We just got home a
couple of hours ago.
I do owe some big thank you's though, and one apology. I ran into a
bunch of the guys during that short window on Friday. I won't start to list them
here because I know I will forget somebody, but I must have run into at least
10 OBCers, including the ever-present guy with the big hat. As soon as I walked
in the door, at the very first table in the whole place, there was Steve
Rittenberg hunched over the table and scavenging. When he saw me, he reached into
something or other and handed me a couple of cards meant especially for me,
an OBC version of the '52 Wes Westrum (ripped neatly into four quadrants and
taped back together) and, drum roll on this one, a '54 Topps "Schoolboy" Rowe,
cutting my '54 wantlist to only four cards. That was has been a long time
coming, Steve - like about 49 years, so you can imagine how much it is appreciated.
Four cards to go on the first set I ever tried to collect!
Next, the apology. Poor Ed Schott comes up to me in the waiting line and
asks if I can guess who he is. Never great under pressure, I say something
like, "duh!" Then he says, "What if I tell you the city - Baltimore!"
Now I am really feeling the heat. I think to myself, "I know, one syllable
first name - Al!" Whoops. Wrong one syllable. When he told me who he was, I
could have kicked myself. I have probably done more trades with Ed than anybody
in the past year. Sorry buddy - as you could see on Friday, the olde Friar
really is olde and those senior moments keep coming up more and more.
My last thank you for today is for a couple of cards in the mail while I
was gone. Tom Housley sent a '61 Bobby Gene Smith off of the waiver wire along
with a minor league traveling companion.
All in all, my National experience was positive, though short. I finished
my '73 set with the purchase of a beautiful Schmidt/Cey rookie card, and I got
to within one card of finishing my '59 Fleer Ted Williams set with the
purchase of #63. Of course, the one remaining is the infamous #68, although I am
still filling that hole with the counterfeit version provided by Steve R. a
couple of years ago.
I picked up a few more, but those were the hightlights. I also bought a
bunch of dupes so I can try to catch up with a few guys. Hope that I have a
chance to sort through those in the next few days.
Again, sorry I wasn't more fully in the picture at the National. Maybe
that adds to my mystique. Great to meet some guys I had never met before. Wish we
had more time together.

Subject: Florida Gators media guide
From: bdangelo@aol.com
Hi gang,
This is from my alma mater. Boy, have they gone downhill.
By The Associated Press
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - What a croc!
A large crocodile - and not the school's namesake Alligator mascot - is featured on the cover of the University of Florida's 2003 football media guide.
A photo of Florida coach Ron Zook leading the team onto the field is superimposed over the olive green crocodile. The words "Florida" and "2003 Football Guide" also appear on the front, but the word "Gators" is absent.
Florida spokesman Steve McClain said he regrets the error.
"We asked for an alligator, we paid for an alligator and unfortunately we did not get an alligator," McClain told The Associated Press late Tuesday in a telephone interview. "It's unfortunate, it's somewhat embarrassing obviously, but the bottom line is we thought we were getting an alligator."
The school was looking for a certain "design element" for the cover, McClain said, but none of the school's stock photography matched what the media relations staff needed.
The school sought outside help for a picture, employing a number of production companies to help with the search. After a picture was found, the error was unfortunately not caught before production, McClain said.
American crocodiles have pointy snouts and are found mostly in mangroves where fresh and saltwater mix. They are a light, olive-green color.
Alligators have broad snouts, live mainly in freshwater surroundings and are nearly black. They are found throughout Florida and vastly outnumber the state's stock of crocs.

Subject: Sean McGowan (the other one) news and National stuff
To: obc ramblings
From: Matthew
OBC Sean's namesake a local hero, from the Portland Sea Dogs site:
MCGOWAN WALK-OFF WINNER EARNS THE SEA DOGS A SPLIT
Sean McGowan hit a two-run, walkoff home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the
Portland Sea Dogs a 4-2 win in game two of a doubleheader Tuesday night at sold out Hadlock Field.
Looks like McGowan, Jr. is in the Red Sox system now, easier to keep an eye on him up in Portland.
Several National reports out there, no doubt, but might as well throw some butter on the bagel and
get mine taken care of.
My National trip started at 2pm on Thursday, as I departed Cambridge for the friendly confines of
New Britain Stadium, home of the AA Twins affiliate New Britain Rock Cats. The drive down was
quite nice, at barely over 90 minutes from door to park.
New Britain is still a "like-new" facility and sits next to the high school stadium, which has its
own rustic charm. I arrived between a day/night doubleheader, picked up my night game ticket ($10,
front row), and walked around the high school field for a while. From a perch in the high school
stands, you can see into New Britain stadium, a cheap seat for the fence jumper in all of us.
After watching the grounds crew for a while, I drove out to get lunch and passed the local card
shop. I stopped in to kill some time, an easy proposition given the large quantity of kid-friendly
boxes stuffed with 80 and 90s junk in the back. I pulled four David Seguis and one Keith Hernandez
#5, then paid the shop owner's wife $1 for the privilege. A couple of McBurgers later ($3), it's
game time, which means another $3 for parking in the lot I had for free before lunch (doh!).
The Rock Cats field decent Twins prospects, primarily the starting pitcher this night. Brent
Shoening threw 8 innings of 2-hit ball, handing it over to the bullpen to finish the 6-0 shutout.
The visiting Norwich Navigators never seriously threatened, and Shoening struck out several.
Around the fifth inning, they said to check your programs for a stamp of the mascot Rocky on one
of three different program ads. Surprise, my program and lineup card had two of them! The $3
program netted me a four-pack of tickets and a $50 jewelry store gift certificate. An OBC-quality
deal for sure.
Bob Reed joined me at the park right as the game ended, but we beat traffic as everyone else
stayed for a fireworks show from behind center field. A quick drive back to his place for some
list checking (several hits to my type and want lists, thanks Bob) and then to sleep, knowing we'd
awake at 5am for the Friday morning drive to Atlantic City.
We rolled away from Bob's house at 5:37am, bearing card boxes and a book of baseball facts. I
drove, while Bob read me things like "Fathers and sons with the most total hits" (the Boones, I
believe) and "Pitchers with the most batting strikeouts in a year" (Bob's own Dean Chance). We
blazed by NYC around 7am and onto the open highway of I-80. Wait, I-80? Oops. We missed the turn
to the Garden State Expressway, noting our mistake at the "Welcome to Pennsylvania!" sign. A quick
trip to Wal-Mart netted an atlas ($10), some McBreakfast ($3), and Coke for the trip ($2.60).
Reversing our field, we pulled into Atlantic City around noon, missing the opening bell by an hour
but otherwise unfazed. The neighborhoods around the convention center aren't great, but we parked
for free on a busy street and hoofed the three blocks to the show ($5 Naxcom ticket from Bob).
At the entrance was Bill Henderson's table, an easy place to drop $20 for some 57 mid-series and
52 commons. Bill lives in Janesville, WI, the same town as two of my grandparents. After spending
15 minutes there, I moved along the rows of dealers, noting the smaller size relative to 2001
Cleveland (or did it just seem that way?). More vintage dealers than I expected, though. I ran
into Ken (blinded by The Hat, naturally) and others at the best tables. Some wandering found Kurt
Turdot's table and Ed Schott. We pawed through his boxes, then broke for lunch at the OBC table at
one. More hits there (Kent Goto even brought an envelope with my name on it) and a bunch of names
connected to faces. See the pictures to come for the full list.
Hit about 10 different tables Friday and spent less than expected. Friday evening put Bob, Steve
Rittenberg, and me at an Absecon diner for burgers and salads ($12), then retired to Steve's room
for card swapping. Steve hit me a few times, then dealer scummed a few more. We watched the Expos
score six runs off bad Braves pitching and defense, winning in the 9th on a wild pitch. Go 'xpos!
Saturday morning, we checked out of the resplendent Super 8 ($84) and snagged some complimentary
danishes for breakfast. A right-on-time entrance to the show (using Joe Isaac's $5 Naxcom ticket)
sends me back to a few good tables and in search of new ones. I'd snagged about 35 hits on day
one, but hadn't finished any sets. Saturday watched the 1954 Topps set go down, the last card a $9
Larry Doby from Indianapolis JD's table, along with several hits from his 10% box. A 50-cent box
netted a 1969 OPC #5 LL, a 1962 Venezuelan LL (with Ford and others), more #5s, several trimmed
1953s, and a couple of 50s hits. Saturday lunch meant a return to the "Big Ass Sandwich" counter,
where they charged $7.50 for ham and cheese on rye, but it literally came with a pound of ham. The
sandwich guy called it the "George Foreman Special." Afternoon hunger was not a problem.
Saturday evening, we collected in the Absecon Days Inn for the OBC swap. After some confusion over
the room reservation, they installed us in the restaurant, with a privacy screen so others
wouldn't have to witness our pizza-eating, card-swapping debauchery ($15 for room, pizza, and
soda). Another bunch of hits here, including those from Mike Rich, Mac Wubben, Steve Rittenberg,
Kent Goto, and Ed Schott. We closed up swap at 11pm, Bob and I readying ourselves for the
four-hour drive back to CT. Several areas of road construction meant a day-time return was risky,
especially given our plan to hit a 1pm game the next day.
After rolling into town at 3am Sunday morning, Bob and I crashed for several hours of sleep. He
mercifully allowed me to sleep until 10:30, even though I was on the rec room couch where his kids
wanted video game access. A gentleman and a saint!
Sunday noon meant driving to New Haven for a Ravens game, the Toronto affiliate in the same AA
league as New Britain. They play at Yale Field, a contrast to New Britain in its history and
layout. Tickets nice and cheap ($5 GA), especially when you can just sit in reserved anyway. My
free scorecard shows the Ravens took a 2-0 lead, but squandered the game late on a rally by the
Trenton Thunder, the Yankee affiliate. The most exciting part of the game was a between-innings
promotion, where a fan got three chances to chip a golf ball close to a target. After a few missed
swings, he came close with the first chip. His second chip, however, took off like a shot,
whistling a few feet wide of the center fielder's head as he was playing catch. He snapped around
and kept a good eye on the third chip, which fortunately threatened only the grass. I could see
the headline: "Freak golf fatility at baseball game, center fielder mourned. Fan to seek PGA Tour
After the game, I dropped Bob off at his house and headed home, another 90 minutes to Cambridge
and the Mass Pike $1.75 toll. What a great weekend! Visited five states in four days, saw two
games, thousands of cards, and almost 20 OBCers. Makes me want to do it again this weekend. Thanks
for the hits guys and Bob especially for the lodgings!

From: Glenn Codere
After many months of fighting them off, I’ve finally had to give in to the deluge of spam emails which are coming into my email account on a daily basis. I really hate to admit defeat here, but I’m getting sick of having to delete out 50 to 60 messages about printer ink, mortgages, natural genital enlargement, prescription medicine, teenage girls who have read my profile and want me to check out their webcam, “You Are A Winner”, etc., etc., before I can even think about reading my genuine emails.
I’ve really come to hate the scum that send this crap out. I wish there was some way to fire everything straight back at them in a way that would screw up their systems. Now THAT’S a piece of software I’d pay for!!
Anyway, please go ahead and change my email address on your system to read:
I’m going to be particularly careful not to put this address out there on the big bad world wide web. It’ll go out to relatives, friends and other acquaintances.
My old email address will remain in operation for the moment, but I would hope to be able to close it down permanently at some point soon.
My apologies if you receive this message more than once. I’m trying to cover all bases in getting notification of this change to everyone. You may be on more than one of my personal message groups. I’ll be re-subscribing to Mailing Lists (such as the Tigers List) using my new address over the course of the next week or so.
SPECIAL NOTE FOR OBC ADMINS:
Could the appropriate people please carry out the following for me:
Replace my old email with the new one on the monthly Address List.
Subscribe me to all Mailing Lists under my new address.
Change my email address on the Web Page to glenncodere@yahoo.com (an alternatie that I use for outsiders)
I know that this is a little bit of a hassle for everyone, but believe me it’s much worse for me!!!!
