================= Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2003 14:40:20 EDT Subject: So how was your weekend? To: OBC-ramblings@yahoogroups.com, JGreco@us.imshealth.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi gang, A few days ago, (I'm not sure when because I know it was raining, but that could be any day for the last two weeks it seems) my cable internet access went dow for a couple hours. I figured the cable company was making changes or the relentless rain damaged some key operating mechanism thingie (a technical term) and knocked out the cable in my area. Well, all was corrected and working until a couple days later when I had no access for most of the day. It came back up for a couple hours and went down again. The worst part of all this was the modem making some kind of 'busy signal' which was just loud enough and annoying enough to wake me up. Yesterday I had a technician come to the house and he changed the splitter and a few couplings. This worked well enough to raise the signal in my room so the modem could lock on. Apparently the internet signal needs to be stronger for two way communication than just the TV signal, since my televisions all worked fine throughout all this. The guy said the wiring was old and probably wasn't rated high enough to begin with, but we'll see how it holds up for the next few days until I decide if the house should be Saturday evening, I took a quick ride up to Sean McGowan's to pick up a box of UV baseball I purchased from him several weeks (months?) ago. Sean showed me the nice insert his son pulled in a 'pack war' and we chatted briefly about a variety of stuff. The box I bought yielded a George Brett card with a piece of his bat in it.... supposedly anyway. There's no pine tar on it anywhere. Topps even has an insert set this year entitled "Pine Tar Series", but how come George Brett isn't included in THAT subset? It boggles the mind. Sean was busy between his kids' soccer/baseball/track teams, so we couldn't chat too long. I had to be in work last night at midnight and hadn't gotten any sleep all day anyway, so I had to be going home soon. It was great meeting up with Sean again though. So last night I woke up and headed into work. I'll try to give you a mental picture of what took place on my way in. Imagine a (dark blue) car being driven east by me and another (bluish-green) car driving west on the same street. Now try to picture a third (black) car being driven by a complete and total idiot heading south. This particular car headed through a stop sign without coming to said stop and met up with the aforementioned bluish-green car with some force, tearing off a good portion of the front end and spinning it in the middle of the road. This collision happened approximately thirty feet in front of my car, which was still heading east. The black car continued across my path to the other side of the road where it... well, I'm not really sure what it did because I was more concerned about the spinning bluish-green car which was now smashing into the front tire of my car and knocking me into a more south east direction. Fortunately for me there was a telephone pole on the corner to stop my skid, but it did some serious damage to my license plate. That's about all the damage done to my car... well, other than the front quarter panel on the driver side and my front tire which may have been bent in a little. I wasn't hurt other than being shaken up a bit. I wish I could say the same for the others involved in the accident, especially the ones in the formerly spinning car, which now lay in a twisted mess in the middle of the intersection. I think everyone else involved went to the hospital to get checked out - I went into work. Actually, first I went home because I had called in sick at the scene. I was given a ride home (about a block) from the kind people who lived on the corner. They also let me borrow their cell phone to call in sick and got me a soda while I waited for the police, firemen, EMT's and tow trucks to do their jobs. When I got home, I figured there was really no reason to be there, so I called work back up and my buddy came by to pick me up... I UNcalled in sick ;-) I needed the OT last night anyway. I have car repairs to pay for My fortune with automobiles continues. The day started at 7:15a when Ron picked me up to head down to the show. We wanted to get there early so that Rich kid wouldn't beat us to all the deals. We did in fact arrive about a half hour before the show started and began our browsing at OBC friendly dealer Mike Sandles table. Mike was still setting up some displays and rather then have me just stand around showing off my new OBC T-shirt, he put me to work helping. (Am I the first to wear my shirt to an official card show?) I didn't drift too far from Mike's table all morning and picked up a bunch of stuff including some upgrades from the dime box (gives some idea of the tiptony shape of some of my Tiger cards.) The highlight of my day was when Ron told me about a table where the guy had some Kaline's for a very reasonable price. I scurried over and grabbed a 56T and a 57T for a mere $30 for both. The 56 was a graded card which had to be liberated with tin snips and a screw driver when I got home. Ron got a great deal on a Mantle and Musial that I'm sure you'll be hearing about soon if not already. I'm never sure what Mike get's at these shows for 2 reasons 1) he's usually looking for cards I never heard of, & 2) I'm usually too busy dodging cards he tosses at me. For instance, shortly after he arrives on Sunday he tosses me a 65 OPC McLain (my wife would say "twas the guilt what got him") and a 78 TCMA Wickersham. Then as we are leaving the show he presents me with a TCMA All Time Tigers SET, and an 81 Detroit News Norm Cash. Although I owe many in OBC, Mike is in the top 3 or 4 on my list. If you thought this rambling was about over, your only hope is the delete key. Because.........after we left the card show we headed for a local watering hole to catch the Tigers vs Clemens. Once there we met up with a friend of Mike's, drank assorted diet and non-alcoholic beverages, ate chicken wings & fingers, and had a great time watching the wheels come off the Clemens 300 win wagon. We all split up about the 10th inning and headed toward our respective homes. Ron and I listened to the rest of the game during the hour long drive to my house. We thought we might be able to catch the end of the game at the House of Maxwell but it ended after only 17 innings. Alas, the Bengals lost, but it was the only loss of the day as far as I was concerned. Thanks to Ron for the ride, thanks to Mike for the cards he tossed my way, and thank you both for another enjoyable gathering of the FOOT, albeit a few toes short. Hope more can join us next time. We keep what we give away! ================= Date: Tue, 3 Jun 2003 00:22:38 EDT Subject: drum back on ebay To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Wite3@aol.com Well...I have been complaining awhile that the drum backs for the t-205 set were just too darn tough...THEY ARE!! In fact, I am starting to come to believe that no more than two sheets of Drum backs were ever printed. There is one on ebay right now. It is a Shean Rustlers version. This is the first and only Shean I have seen with the Drum back but it is important to note that it is the Rustlers version. This I believe helps to prove my theory that the Drum back was only on the first printing sheet of T-205s. Therefore, there would be very little of the rarer cards with Drum backs. Look for my annual T-205 back report later this summer where I will break down some of my research into the printing of the backs and the cards themselves including rarity/scarcity reports and pricing oddities. My preferred method is to use some strong plyers to break off one of the corners of the PSA case (preferably near the top, and farthest away from the card) Then if you can get the corner to snap off cleanly, you can take a flat-head screw driver, work it into the hole you've made, and gently go around lifting up the seal on theperimiter of the holder. Once you get it to start coming up, it is prettyeasy. Just go slow and be careful and you shouldn't have a problem. PSAslabs are tough, but not as tough as Beckett or SGC in my opinon (I've screwed up just about everybody's population reports). John C. Me being raised a Card fan and my husband, a die-hard Pirates fan, made for an interesting weekend. I love to take pictures and was able to get in early on Sunday...being Scott Roland Bobble-Head Day so I was certain I would get to catch the Pirates during batting practice...Of course their bus was late getting to the stadium so they did not do batting practice...I got some great photos and will share those later if you'd like...I was given a ball by Julian Tavarez and so I was on a mission to get as many players to sign the ball as I could...I thougt to make it a present for my husband, but then decided..."NO WAY"...I was down by the field right next to the Pirates dugout and wanted to take a photo of the team in the dugout, so while I was waiting I sat down next to this older couple and started talking to them. Of course many of you know how I love to talk..lol I told them that I was from Iowa and that My husband and I love the Pirates, ( acquired my taste from my husband's love for them) and that this weekend I was struggling on who to cheer for...we talked about Willie Stargill and how he is my husbands favorite player and we spoke of the many great players that started with the Pirates...and in the middle of this all a young kid came up and asked this old man for his autograph...So I asked him if he used to play and he just smiled and introduced himself as none other than Bill Virdon...I was chatting baseball with Bill Virdon...A former Pirate!!! So all the stuff he chimed in about Stargill was because he really knew him...I am still on cloud nine...he signed my ball along with 8 other players...I decided not to give the ball to my husband but went with the nanny nanny boo boo approach! it didn't matter that the Pirates lost that day...I will treasure it always... anyway thought I'd share my moment with you all...oh yeah I saw Yogi Berra and Joe Gargiola...didn't get to dish with them though! ================= Date: Wed, 4 Jun 2003 07:35:01 -0700 (PDT) Subject: OBC quality, eBay fresh To: obc ramblings From: Matthew http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2733930948&category=636 Several 50s gouged or otherwise worn stars http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2733795472&category=636 Many 62 Post cards. If he had managed to eek out just one more victory, or if he had managed to avoid just one defeat, he would have finished with a perfect -- and I do mean perfectly mediocre -- winning percentage of .500. As it stands, his career record is 36-37 and that's pretty darn good enough for me excuse the language. Bubba didn't just pitch, though; he was a multi-faceted player. He could hit (had 53 of them), he could hit for power (3 home runs!) and he could field (one year he made no errors!). I'm not sure if he could run, but we all know speed is overrated in this game, it's those home runs that really count. Bubba Church never played for a team that won it all but he did have a brush with greatness. He was a member of the 1950 Phillies, the Whiz Kids, who won the pennant with great excitement that year. They lost the World Series in 4 straight, but that isn't really imporant because everyone knows that getting to the World Series is all that matters and I don't just say that because I'm a Red Sox fan. With Robin Roberts as a teammate, Bubba didn't get much attention. But he worked just as hard, did his job and made a contribution to a great team in a great season. Robin Roberts is in the Hall of Fame. Bubba belongs in the Hall of Mediocrity. At a recent reunion of the 1950 team, Bubba reminisced about that magic season and provided some insight into his character that many current Major Leaguers would be wise (but are unlikely) to consider. Bubba was happy to make $5000 a year for playing baseball, and he thought that the $11 per day meal money "was the greatest in the world". He was advised by a friend to buy some stocks with his World Series share, but he needed some stuff for the house so he bought furniture with it instead. Still has some of it too. That's refreshing. That should count for a lot. Bubba was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and he grew up there. He still lives there. This is, obviously, a man of stability. Since retiring from baseball he has had an assortment of jobs, including selling real estate and running a linen service for doctor's offices. Clearly, this is a man with no fancy-pants, high-falutin, over-inflated airs about himself. He has been inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, which is probably the loftiest Hall he is likely to enter. Until now, of course... ================= Date: Fri, 06 Jun 2003 12:56:46 -0400 To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: another 1978 variation From: typecard@aol.com #361 Chris Knapp - blue sky vs. gray sky - the difference is distinct and easily visible at 5 feet (5 feet is my standard).     As is my normal practice, I usually do not overbid OBC members on stuff.  Usually notices like this are wasted on me because by the time I look them up someone else has a claim.  So I thought - what fortune - I'm sitting right here at the moment Spike sends this to the group.  I go to the site and start bidding because there are NO BIDS - What luck.
    Now the embarrassing part - I apologize to Rob for pumping his bid (or visa versa) within seconds of his bid being placed.  By 4 seconds on one and 7 seconds on another.  Bob Reed also got in there b4 me on one of them so perhaps I was not as fortunate as I had thought.
    Thanks nonetheless Spike for the heads-up and good luck Rob and Bob.  BE WELL!!!!

I already had a few, most of which probably came from Big Al's Big Box o' dupes or Grant's evil persuasion. I once thought, well, as long as I have one of either, I will be happy to cross it off the list and be done with it...but tonight I spent an hour or more re-arranging all the current cards in my binder so that I might put thegreenie right next door to the plain woodie. What craziness !!! Now I don't know what I've got in this book...about 50 more holes in the binder for sure, but some of these silly things look alot alike. I'm not sure if I have two greenies or 1 of each, or just two of theplains...my Babe Ruth specials might need to upgraded just so I can tell if they are one or the other...Hal Reniff has either cards or holes for about 5 different cards...I have cards for some guys that are totally different, so I know that they are variations...others I might have to research for slight differences. AAAArgh !!!! Someone tell me why I would want to go down that long, kooky road after reading tales of terror from Grant (and others...) Okay, here's the deal...I have Norm Bass, Barry Latman,Leo Posada and Dave Sisler that I have extras of. (That means that I have three cards of each guy, one woodie, two green woodies) That's 122,145,168,171 and they are decidely an ill-looking green. They are the only ones that I'm sure I can safely send away, confident that the craziness will spread across the nation. It is returning to Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford Museum (in Dearborn, Michigan) from Friday, August 8 -10. 28 matches mainly played Saturday and Sunday from 10-3. I think Ray Luurs will back me up when I suggest that any that can make it should try and attend. If OBC is the way collecting should be, then Historic /Vintage BB is the way BB should be played. First M's game I've been to this year - I always like to catch one of the interleague games as they are so interesting. Any Montreal fans out there who can clue me in as to what to watch for? Their record is outstanding and interleague games for the Mariners have been exciting so far.... Gary Mandell sent me an extra OBC T-shirt (I missed ordering one). Way cool! Especially the part on the back about 'newer' material !! Thanks for yourhelp Went to the once-a-year Washington State Card Collectors show nearly two weeks ago. (Oldest running vintage card show - since 1973, according to them...). Bought some stuff from Mark Macrae and had my usual wonderful time chatting him up and listening to him. Man, that guy knows a lot about cards!Thanks Mark! Had St. Al in tow with me - bought him lunch - sat in the Seattle Center and watched white people do traditional Chinese dances. Had agood time chatting with St. Al (once he was fed and his blood sugar back up). Went back to the card show and tried to buy various clumps of cards by offering less money(dealer: $13 for those. me: how about $10 dealer: nope). This happened a few times until I spent time with Mike Livingstone (retired U Trading Cards dealer - Seattle). St. Al was looking for green tintsor some such dreck and Mike and I were talking about yoga (Al: yoghurt? I don't like yoghurt!), and Mike's upcoming summer trip to San Diego. Mike was in a good mood and sold me a brick of '56 Topps FB and a bigger brick of '60 Topps baseball. Whaddaguy!! He even let me owe him some dough until I could get home and then mail it to him. How many dealers would do THAT?! (Maybe Tiger Dave - he's Canadian....) So after reading all the e-mails about Vegas 03 and hearing St. Al's version of events (that makes for interesting listening!), I got this idea......hmmmm. What about some kind of fall event, say after Labor Day, some weekend in September or October? It would be OBC-wide and the congregating point would be Whidbey Island. We have more than 70 bed and breakfasts on the Island. I work at the Greenbank Farm where we could rent one of the barns for an OBC get together (massive card swapping, food, drinks etc.) and we could arrange golf, sightseeing, touch football, sports bar visiting (yes, we have at least one sports bar on Whidbey Island - not a Hooters though). No card shops, but if we invited Mark Macrae and Mike Livingstone and another dealer I know, we could deal in some serious cardboard. Any and all of you who are interested in this kind of a thing, please e-mail me. I would be happy to play the Mike Hair part and all that would involve for such an OBC get-together. We might even persuade Lynn Miller to flyin from the P.I. ! I will keep the group posted on how this thing is shaping up. It may be too soon to make it happen this year - but it could happen next year. And, there is an Indian Casino not too far away for the gambling side of things. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated so I can come up with some kind of consensus on how to do it all. Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 17:28:18 -0400 From: "Joe Isaac" Hello everyone, Today was a tough one. This afternoon Marina was working at home and went outside for a few minutes and was stunned to see our next door neighbor finish chopping our trees that mark the propery line (gorgeous, well established at least 20 yr old lilacs, rose of sharon and japanese willow). Marina called me right away to tell me and, of course, I got furious. My first instinct was to call our local zoning department. To my complete astonishment, they told me that anything overhanging the imaginary property line can be cut by the neighbor without our consent. According to the zoning department, there is no law and neighbors can cut anything that hangs (to any extent) into their property, even though the bushes grow in our property and belong to us. We are so aggrevated that he did not have the decency to tell us that the branches were bothering him and Marina, who is an avant gard gardener, would have done the cutting the right way without hurting or killing the trees. On the same token, he did not ask for permission to do this himself. Right now, we feel stepped over and offended and Marina is concerned about the livelihood of the trees and we would like to know what legal actions, if any, can we take against this guy. Our landscaping is fabulous and is a quite a big percentage of our property value. I've attached a jpg file showing the damage done today to one of our lilac trees. If anyone out in OBC land can provide any insight or advice, we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! It was decided that the best use of the remaining funds would be to combine them with the proceeds of the OBC auction. Thus I am sending the remaining $525 to the OBC treasurer Doug Smith. I encourage everyone who hasn't done so already to contribute to the OBC auction for Rick's kids. I also have a fun suggestion. Remember the thrill of finishing one of your favorite sets. Why not do it again? Pick your favorite OBC era set, pick one of the more difficult (and expensive, maybe not a Mantle, but a nice card) cards from that set and send it to Ken for the auction. Now you can go through the thrill of finishing off that favorite set all over again. ================= Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 22:24:46 EDT Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Rick Redpath Update To: bdonaldson@callisma.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: tply@aol.com Thanks so much for the update!     As you may know Sassy has uncovered a (40) count lot of 2-206's on eBay and has placed a bid and asked if anyone was interested in "splitting" the lot.  I am interested and I believe a few others.  It can be viewed at:

<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2735712477&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebaylargephotohosting>

    I'm not sure what numbering system the seller used but it is not the one that I am use to.  It looks like the seller went by a strict alphabetical system and my system list the major leaguers first and the minor league players second in alphabetical order.  I numbered the lot according to my numbering system and have posted them here in case others are interested:

It's at least ex mint. I was searching for nearly two years, and asked many dealers at both of the last two nationals in Cleveland and Chicago. I also checked ebay many times and saw that you were also bidding many times. I don't think I ever bid on one on ebay. All the larger dealers know this is an elusive card. Here's are the reasons I've been told it's a tough card. 1. High number single print 2. Grant is with the Phillies and there are lots of Phillies collectors who need this card for their 1966 team set. 3. Grant is paired with Bart Shirley, who is with the Dodgers. Dodgers are popular not only in Southern California, and Brooklyn, but across the country. This means more team set colectors. 4. The 1966 set is one of the more popular sets from the 60's to collect. Of course so is the 1967 set which is supposedly the reason why I need a bunch of common player high numbers from. I also need the high number stars from 1967. I'll keep my eyes open, and If I run across another 1966 Grant Jackson, I'll send it your Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! I had a similar experience with the 1961 set and #563, the Bob Cerv card. When I would go to a show and say "I'm looking for a couple '61s to complete my set," about half the dealers would say "OK, but I don't have the Cerv card." The price guides don't reflect correct values for these cards, but that's fine by me since a UV, holograph-selling dealer may sell me one cheap some day. If anybody has a 1966 #591 after Guru gets his, I'll give you my 1961 Mantle Blast (#406, creased) or something else in trade! I know that there are a number of both musicians and, shall we say people of a certain age (if you can remember it, you weren’t there) within the ranks of OBC who might find this interesting. I daresay that we also have among us a number of people who fall into both of these catagories, but I digress. On Saturday evening, I attended a gig that was just so terrific that I’ve got to share it with my friends. Anchored on the River Clyde in the heart of Glasgow is a former ferry boat that’s been converted to concert venue. The Renfrew Ferry accommodates about 250 people, and is perfect for small, intimate gigs. This evening featured a couple of guys who played to this atmosphere perfectly – Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent. Those of you over 40 might remember them as The Zombies. What a fantastic concert it was. About 2 and a half hours of amazing music thanks to Colin’s very distinctive vocals and Rod’s virtuosity on the keyboards. The backing members of the band were no slouches either. The bassist was an original member of Argent (Rod’s group from just after the demise of The Zombies), while the guitarist had done session work with a list of artists as long as his arm, including playing live at the “Live Aid” concerts in the ‘80s. The guys covered everything you might expect. Zombies material such as Time of the Season and She’s Not There, Argent stuff like Hold Your Head Up (Man, the Ferry was literally bouncing in the water to that one!!), and Colin’s solo stuff like Say You Don’t Mind. As if the gig itself wasn’t enough, afterwards the guys came out and mingled with the crowd for about an hour. I actually got the chance to meet them both and get a couple of CD covers autographed (I’d brought them along just in case I got the opportunity). Both Colin and Rod were extremely friendly blokes, and seemed very appreciative of the reception that they’d received that evening. I think they must also have portraits in their attics that age for them, since they both looked amazing considering that they must be in their late 50’s. I’m sure they would have liked to have gotten back to their hotel (after all, it was 1:30am) but they hung around long enough to give everyone the chance of a handshake and a chat. My only regret was not having a camera handy!! A great evening that I’ll remember for a long time to come! They were reprinted in the post-1957 size. Because of the size differnce there are thicker borders and some of the photos are cropped. I have this set. Although as I recall the backs are white and red, not red and cardboard. It looks as if they were soiled to make them appear more original. Some of the other cards look real. Maybe this "friend" he's selling them for (if they exist at all) bought fake cards to begin with. ================= Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 21:16:44 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: Seller on e-bay - real cards?? From: "David Skoglund" Looking at more scans of 1953 Bomwans (since I'm at work and can't look at my own cards).... The front of the suspect Matthews card looks like it is from the reprint set. In the background it looks like there is a dot pattern that is common to counterfit cards printed from originals. The back looks like a genuine 1953 Bowman. It has the "Printed in the USA" note while the reprint cards are marked as reprints in that area. The rounded corners appear to match up on both scans. I'd say it is a fake that someone roughed up to look old. ================= Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 15:42:06 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Long story -- How Chris finally got his first '52 Topps Hi # To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Chris Stufflestreet Back in 1999, I stopped by a card shop near where I lived and caught the store owner (who's never there normally) in a good mood. We talked for a while about cards and the hobby, and then I went ahead and asked him about the five '52 Topps cards he had in his display case. He let me take them for $3 each because they were pretty well-worn (I was prepared to pay $5 each, so I took them), but one of the cards had a lot of back damage. The card was of Jim Hearn of the Giants. The front was terrific, with bumped corners being the only distraction. The back wasn't readable; it looked like it had been pulled from a scrapbook and the number was part of the missing text. Tad told me that because the front looked good, he'd let me take it for $4. Because of the back damage, I passed. Several times after that, I would see Hearn's face with a $4 tag during subsequent visits, but I never picked it up. Fast forward to 2001. By this time, I was online and building my website. While looking around for info on the '52 Topps set, I found a gallery of cards on a collector's page...and instantly recognized Jim Hearn as one of his high numbers! Perhaps many of you know the feeling of realizing that you should have done something long after you've decided against it, and the moment was frozen in the back of my mind for a long time after that. I made another trip to the shop the day sfter learning it was one of those elusive '52 Topps Hi #s, but the card was no longer in the showcase. Instead, I tried to pick up the four '51 Red Backs they had. Tad wasn't there, and the girl who worked there pulled out a Beckett and told me I could buy them for $6 each. The Red Backs were all in Poor condition, and three had diamond-shaped holes punched out of them. The fourth card had a deep crease that seemed to decapitate the player pictured. When I started pointing out that the damge to the cards was pretty bad, and that I was looking to spend maybe $1 a card, she cut me off. "Look in this guide. These are $15 cards. I'm not about to give them away!" I asked if she had ever read the part in that same Beckett about how condition factored into "book value," but she insisted that the cards were worth $15 and that she took the damage into consideration when she quoted them at $6 each. I left and jsut went to other shops after that. Today, I finally went back to that store. This time, a different young lady was working there, and the '51s were gone. While looking at the '53 Topps cards in the showcase, I heard, "there's a little damage, so they're like 50 cents to a dollar each." Hearing that, I asked her how much she knew about old cards. "Not a whole lot" was her quick reply, "Most of the customers are into Yu-Gi-Oh and game cards." I immediately shifted into "helpful customer" mode, showing her which years the cards were made, pointed out the few stars in the stacks and a few points about condition. After that, she said, "Wow...nobody ever showed me that much before. All this time, I've been using this chart to try and figure it out." She pointed to a sign hanging from the wall with a bunch of top loaders taped to it, along with the year of issue...and the '52 card was the Jim Hearn that I had passed over four years ago! Keeping my poker face, I asked her, "Does Tad still run the shop?" When she said yes, I told her that I'd been in before (but wasn't going to say how long ago), and he had offered the card for $4 and I'd love to take it if it was still that price. She smiled and said, "Sir, if Tad said you could have it for four bucks, that's the price as far as I'm concerned." So now card #337 has been added to my 1952 Topps set! My first nosebleeder from the set...15 years after I bought my first '52. I'm certain it will be another 15 years before I get to add the second one, but I'm still surprised that Hearn has stayed under the radar for all that time. And for those who read through this rambling, I upgraded one of my '53 Topps cards during the same visit. If anybody needs #51 Frank Campos from the 53T set and isn't concerned with creases, I'll offer it to the first person who asks for it. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. By Larry Eichel The Philadelphia Inquirer PHILADELPHIA Several hundred baseball player-agent agreements from the 1980s that had been posted for sale on eBay and included the players' Social Security numbers are being returned to Major League Baseball by the memorabilia dealer who was selling them. The dealer, Scott Gaynor of South Dennis, Mass., said one of his employees had obtained the documents for $1,700 in cash three months ago at the Philadelphia Sports Card and Memorabilia Show at the Fort Washington Expo Center. In a telephone interview, Gaynor said he had not yet determined the identity of the man from whom the papers were purchased. Gaynor said his employee remembered the man ""walking around the show with this box full of documents.'' ESPN.com, which initially reported the availability of the papers Tuesday night, said the largest lot being offered on eBay consisted of 44 documents from former Phillies, including Mike Schmidt, Darren Daulton, Von Hayes and Greg Gross. The bids for those papers had surpassed $200 by the time they were removed from the site. ""I'm surprised mine was even out there,'' said Gross, now a Phillies coach. Told that his Social Security number had been for sale, he replied, ""That's the part that's scary.'' The concern, of course, is that an identity thief could use such personal information to a player's financial detriment. Similar documents had also been available bearing the signatures and personal information of Jim Palmer, Gaylord Perry, Ozzie Smith and Don Sutton, all Hall of Famers. As to how the original seller might have acquired the papers, Gaynor said: ""You have documents like this floating around the movies, sports and other hobbies. What happens often is that they're put in the trash and somebody takes them Another dealer, Rich Altman of Hollywood (Fla.) Collectibles, said he thought it more likely that the papers had been stolen. On Tuesday, eBay removed the documents from its Web site after officials from Major League Baseball complained. Said Pat Courtney, a baseball spokesman: ""Our first priority was to get them pulled down, because of the Social Security numbers, and we're pleased that the dealer is sending them back to us. We still don't know that they originally came from our office. We've got an investigation going to figure it out, and we're just a day in.'' Gaynor said he was giving up the papers because he didn't ""want to be in possession of anything that shouldn't be out in the public zone.'' Why would anyone be interested in buying old player-agent agreements? Whatever the papers lack in excitement they make up for in authenticity. An autograph collector can be reasonably certain that a signature on a player-agent agreement is not a And there's another reason. ""Collectors like oddball items,'' said James Spence, president of PSA/DNA Authentication Services in Orwigsburg, Pa. ""Having a player's signature on his divorce papers or his last will is a lot better than a signed baseball or photograph because it's something very personal to the guy.'' Gaynor and Spence said the matter had been blown out of proportion. They said items containing players' Social Security numbers had gone on the market in the past without any negative During the time the papers were on eBay, the Social Security numbers were blocked out, in keeping with eBay policy. Had the documents been purchased, though, the numbers would have been visible to the buyers. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2003 23:18:05 -0700 Subject: 1966 Topps Card #591 From: Peter Iversen Thanks to GURU and RON PERRY - I have ANOTHER! You heard right I have tickets to the Yankees available. Two tickets for Saturday July 26th at 1pm. There is a catch. I belong to a group called OBC (http://www.oldbaseball.com) of about 150 people who, like me collect old, mostly beatup baseball cards for fun - not profit. This spring one of our members passed away after a year long illness. He leaves his wife Roberta and children Ian (age 11) and Casey (age 8). A fund (http://users.rcn.com/rredpath/) has been established for his children. My group, OBC will be running an auction of baseball cards on ebay with all proceeds going to the fund for Rick's kids. Initially I thought that the Yankee tickets would be part of this auction but the Red Sox legal department said an auction on Ebay is a no-no. However a private auction is Ok. We had a mini-OBC gathering in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Geno Wagner, Jeff Sackmann (and friend, Margaret), and I attended the Brewers-Cardinals game at Miller Park. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: directorth@aol.com For anyone who has looked at my lists lately, you're probably wondering why the years were all mixed up. The simple explanation is that I had them in descending order (newest first), but I decided to flip it around - oldest first. I had to do this a little bit at a time to get it right - because unfortunately, my home page is on AOHell - and I used their Easy Designer to make my page. "Easy Designer" is the most inaccurately named product ever invented; it's taken my a looong time to finally flip my list around, without losing anything (I hope). Anyway, the list should be in somewhat readable form now. For anyone considering AOL's Easy Designer - DON'T! Sure, creating a page isn't hard but just try updating it. Not something I recommend if you want to keep your sanity. ================= Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2003 19:45:59 -0500 Subject: Need help getting on OBC-Thanks server To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: "D. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: tply@aol.com Last night was very special at Pacific Bell Park and it was made special in part because Geordie Calvert offered me a free ticket to the game when we met in Vegas earlier this year at the OBC gathering! Geordie his son and friend drove to San Francisco from Merced and I met them at "The Java House" (A local greasy spoon I frequent) to exchange putters we had mixed up on the golf course in Vegas. We then proceeded to Pacific Bell Park, Geordie and his son decked out in Dodger Blue and me and Geordie's friend proudly wearing our Giants black and As we proceeded to our seats (great club level seats) I explained some of the facts about the park. Geordie, Tyler and Donnie now know why the giant glove behind the bleachers only has four fingers. When we arrived at our seats we had the misfortune of having a couple of ugly Giants fans heckling Geordie and Tyler for their team of choice. I must say Geordie and Tyler handled it with great restraint and defused the two hecklers before the third inning was complete by not evening responding to any of the taunts, way to go Geordie and Tyler! The fact that we witnessed baseball history was made all the better because we were in attendance as friends! Geordie I thank you again for the invitation and wonderful night and the old ball yard! I realize you and Tyler was disappointed at the final outcome (Donnie and I couldn't have been happier) but, to see Barry Bonds be the first to steal 500 bases was indeed a special evening made better because we attended together! There goes my next week! I just played the '61 Twins (home team) against the 2002 AL Central Championship Twins. In a 16-inning affair, the newer guys pulled it off 6-5 despite two dingers by Jim Lemon. Kyle Lohse, Eddie (the malcontent) Guardado, JC Romero, LaTroy Hawkins, and Tony Fiore combined to allow only 8 hits across the 16 innings, while Jim Kaat, Ray Moore, Don Lee, Bill Pleis and Danny McDevitt allowed an unlucky 13. Lemon's 2nd HR of the game came in the bottom of the 9th, driving in Bobby Allison and Earl Battey ahead of him and tying the game. Spectacular relief pitching followed, ending only when McDevitt gave up the winning run to Cristian Guzman, who scored from 1st on a groundball double down the left field line by Torii Hunter. Fiore came and gets Allison and Batey on pop-outs and then strikes out the red-hot Lemon to end the game! What a game!! What a C-O-O-L site!!! Thanks a ton, Tom... I was able to meetup with Chris Stufflestreet for a couple of hours and talk baseball cards.Great seeing you again Chris! Admission was $2 with maybe 15 dealers. All UV except a couple of tables had a small selection of old cards. At one table the dealer had a stack of about 7 1952 Topps which I thumbed through. The stack included one of the 17 cards I need to complete the low numbers #66 Brooklyn Dodger Preacher Roe. It is a nice card but included a stain along the top border and Mr. Dealer told me $20. I offered him $10 and he accepted. At another table I offered $7 for a 1963 Fleer card of Don Drysdale, but dealer held firm at $10. As I was leaving the show I threw down my ten spot for the Drysdale. Chris and I went back to Mr Dealer #1 and he started pulling cards out froma box below his table. I bought a card of an American Indian to send to Mark "Chata" Shelton. Could somebody PLEASE send me Marks mailing address? MrDealer also had a 1965 Topps Joe Morgan rookie card F-G for $5. I have completed the 1965 set, but the Morgan rookie is one of the worst looking cards in my whole collection. I know, hard to believe, but I upgraded. Later I found out that Chris had one hand on his wallet to plunk down the $5 if I turned down that card! Chris send me your new address so I can send along myupgraded card of Joe! In earlier days I never would have paid $10 for that 63 Fleer Drysdale card. But I thought of what it sells for on eBay, plus shipping, I threw down. So, Mumsy and I are heading to Slavery Island in the morning...we are going to try to do a two week run. I didn't Ramble about my last solo visit, which, fairly expectedly, was a bit of a disaster. You have to understand the pain in the tooshie getting there first. From my house, it's about 30 minutes drive to the ferry terminal...then about a one hour ferry ride, then an hour drive, then another hour waiting for the next ferry, then a 1 hour ferry ride, then an hour drive to the water taxi, and a 5 minute run over to the island. If you leave Vancouver at 7:30 am, you can be at Unsavary Manor by 3 pm. If you hit all the connections. I went up on a Monday morning, to avoid the weekend rush. Sometime the previous evening, some idiot ferry worker was playing with the ramps and snapped a cable, meaning only the bottom level could carry vehicles, and not the 2 upper decks. Two hour wait. I came home the following Monday....wouldn't you know it, everything went well until I had to get on the second ferry at around 12:20 pm. The previous sailing had two guys involved in some sort of knife fight, one of them got stabbed.....and the RCMP shut down the ferry and searched every freakin' vehicle looking for the suspect. They were even backing cars off the ferry. Three hours wait for THAT ferry. And now, here we are going back for more. Talk to you all in a couple of weeks...I hope. Have plans of firing up the generator as well as the chainsaw, getting firewood ready for the Fall. So far, this month has sucked royally...after finding out my wife was pregnant with twins, she miscarried. Our search for a new place took a little longer than expected (though we found a great place because of the delay). Then, when we start moving from our old address, our former landlady turned psycho (she tossed out about $1500 worth of our property on 6/25 though we paid the rent through the end of June...guaranteeing a lot more misery in a courtroom soon). Then I get an email from Larry Tipton about a card show this weekend, conveniently located right near where I work (I'm a telephone service tech, and the FOP building is near my regular route). I figured that a card show would be a nice place to get away from my ongoing troubles and besides, you should never give up the chance to goof off on the company clock. This must be an annual thing, because there was a show at the same place last July 14th. I remember that because that day happens to be my anniversary and Ellen wasn't the least bit happy about attending a card show on our special day. She convinced me to leave by signing up for season tickets for the Jacksonville Jaguars ("See honey? There's our anniversary present. That's $600, let's leave now."), and then never bothered to sign the card thay sent us; therefore, the "anniversary gift" became an easy way to get me to leave. But let me try to pull a stunt like that when I get any type of gift for her, and I'll be needing to build a doghouse...but I digress. I arrived at the show about 9:30, and dropped $2 to benefit the Fraternal Order of Police (and I'm always happy to help them, because I don't want to do their job). I didn't see Larry right away, so I started perusing the tables. UV here, UV there, and the occasional vintage item. While talking with one dealer about old football cards, I heard, "Hey Chris!" from behind. I knew right away that Larry had found me, and I left the dealer's table. After comparing notes about what we'd seen, we decided to visit a couple of dealers. The first was a pleasant gentleman from Gainesville who asked if we were "web active." After explaining OBC, the dealer gave his email address and asked if I could drop him the links to OBC and my own site in an email. Larry spent $10 on a '63 Fleer Drysdale after considering it for a long time. While debating, I noted how I've noticed that '63 Fleers -- once perceived to be about as common as dirt -- had spiked in price on eBay in the last couple of years, and Larry finally relented. When we went to visit the second dealer's table, we found a lot of vintage stuff: T205s of John McGraw and Miller Huggins, B18 blankets of Rabbit Maranville and a common player I have forgotten, a M116 Frank LaPorte, '60s bobblehead dolls (a California Angel and a Pittsburgh Steeler) and a stack of '52 Topps including Gil Hodges and Bob Feller. While we looked around his table, the guy started pulling loads of older stuff from his box. There was a '62 Topps Civil War card (when Larry told the guy that he had the whole set, I saw a scowl), some Crane discs (including Aaron and Yaz), and a Goudey card of Geronimo. Larry quickly negotiated with the seller for that card, pulled it out of its top loader and asked me to see if it was authentic, then paid for it when I gave the card a "thumbs up." About that time, the seller pulled a stack of lower grade stuff out. Larry pulled some '57 commons but found that none were on his wantlist. Near the bottom, he found a '65 Joe Morgan rookie with considerable wear and put it on the table. "How much do you want for this one?" Larry queried. As the dealer flipped through his Beckett, Larry explained about how his Morgan RC was one of the lowest-grade cards in his collection. Considering that the entire "Tipton" grade was named in his honor, that must have said something. "Okay...it books for $35 low, $60 high..You can have it for five." As Larry stood there and considered the deal, I knew he was figuring out whether to get it, and I was ready to throw down the cash if he passed. "Okay, I'll do it." Larry paid for that card and told me I could have his old one...and I will consider it an honor to put a genuine "Tipton collection" card among the motley crew that occupies my '65 I finally decided to buy a card myself, picking up a '67 Whitey Ford for $5. While looking at the back, I noticed that Whitey had his first ever losing season in '66 while playing for a truly pathetic Yankees team that finished in 10th place. But it wasn't Whitey's fault; despite his 2-5 record, he posted a 2.47 ERA. Whaitey's pitching wasn't terrible, he just didn't get the offensive support...kind of like how Bert Blyleven spent his entire career. After an hour spent talking about cards and stuff, Larry left and I headed back to work without anybody realizing I'd been away (how cool is that?). It was a welcome departure freom all the stuff that's been going on, and I'll be looking forward to the next time we can get together. By the way...since I touched on the subject earlier, I'm going to mention my new address again. If you feel the need to send me any surprises, please don't send it to my old address because I might never get it. I just got back from a wonderful event and wanted to share it with you The City of Oxnard, CA is celebrating it's 100th year and are doing several special events. I learned last week that they would be reenacting this game that took place during the 'World Tour' of 1913 - which took elements of the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox (and members of other teams to fill in..) around the world playing baseball. They covered the Southern and Western US as well as at least one stop in Canada and then went on to Asia, Africa and Europe. If you have read THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES you may remember this story. The game in Oxnard was organized because Fred Snodgrass had a ranch there - they had 4,500 people in attendance including several cowboys. The Mayor of Oxnard thought it would be a good idea for Hans Lobert (a speedster and with the Phillies at the time I believe but traveling as a Giant) to race a horse around the base path after the game - he figured it would boost attendance and ticket sales. Well he was right and there were at least 200 boisterous cowboys drinking and betting in left field. They had to stop the game in the 7th inning and hold the race because the crowd demanded it! According to Lobert's account he lost "..by a nose." Well the city of Oxnard went all out - creating replica uniforms from photos for the players to wear, five fingered gloves and also a dead ball. The players, who were Seniors from local High Schools, even left their gloves on the field between innings. The game progressed as a scoreless duel for a few innings - the catchers were having a hard time holding on to the breaking balls with the old style gloves and more than one player dropped the ball when it was in play or just tossed because they didn't use two hands. I sat out at the end of the left field line in my lawn chair - eating my PB&J sandwich and munching chee-tos. The atmosphere was a lot of fun - some of the fans came in costume and a woman decked out in 1913 regalia named 'Bambi' sang "America The Beautiful" as the National Anthem of the time. The game came alive when the White Sox broke it open in the 4th inning - with 4 runs - one on a passed ball - and the other a three run home run (the only one in the game) hit by the White Sox catcher (I was sitting next to his mother..) The sox added 4 more runs over the next 5 innings and the Giants got a total of two (in the actual game the Giants won it 3 to 2). I must admit that the letter L next to the "Giants" name did not disturb this Dodger fan at all... I got a cool program with a recounting of the actual game (yes I have one for you too Josh) and it included all of the High School players on a sheet of T205 style baseball cards! Really cool! One of the potential players in this game - a Senior from Camarillo HS - was just drafted #1 by the Devil Rays - but he didn't play - so no card... I also got a book called THE DAY THE GIANTS CAME TO OXNARD - with a day by day recounting of the story and pictures and lots of photos of old baseball cards (obviously that is what made me buy the book...) The "horse/man" race after the 7th inning was great! They put barrels by the bases that the horse had to go around - to avoid a collision with the base runner (Lobert says the horse almost got him around Short Stop and it made him break his stride...). The player on the Giants who raced the horse won by at least one 'horse length' to rousing cheers from the crowd. I don't think the horse they had was trained to cut the corners and turn as well as the one from 1913 - so the race was never even close. I am going to be reading my new book in the weeks to come - and also I want to get another book that was there (but I didn't have the cash to pick up) that is about the entire 1913 World Tour. I don't think that the majority of the people there had an idea of who the people were who actually played in this game - Matty, Ray Schalk, Buck Weaver, Hal Chase, Sherry Magee, Sam Crawford, Cheif Meyers, Hans Lobert, Germany Schaffer, Fred Merkle, Fred Snodgrass, Tris Speaker and on and on... but I think some of them are going to want to find out. They did a video of the whole thing and it sounded like the color man really knew the era and players of the time - I could hear bits and pieces over the loud speaker and he was talking about all of the old players like a sportscaster of their time... Anyway - it was a great time and I am really glad I went to see it. I will enjoy having the book and program and especially the "T205 cards" to remember the day... Take care and thanks for reading... It is an interim position one year because of the fact that the district, Region 9, will hire a new superintendent in the next months and does not want to tie his hands concerning administrative team; but I understand that and am very eager and excited to get started. Who knows, it may turn out to be something more permanent. As always, I want to thank all of you for your support and best I can't express just how excited I am about this development.
