To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com I've been handling most of the requests that directly involve the web site, but I don't get too involved in the email servers. Dan Austin, Steve Rittenberg, and Grant Rainsley have been a big help and have "covered my back" on several improvements and corrections while I've been studying for the IBM DBA Certification exam. What I'd like to do is among the four of us, get a two or three page document distributed with accounts, passwords, techniques, processes, etc. like exactly the steps to take when a new member is brought in, and how do do them without bringing any server to a crashing halt. If each of the four of us has that document, we can all have our responsibilities, and we can all cover for each other as necessary. For example, I am now very familiar with how to remove spam notices from the website bulletin board, but I don't even have a clue how to get myself off the individual e-mails list over to the daily digest e-mail list. We'll straighten out those problems in the near future. Speaking of problems, the more I think about the recent Klez worm virus - trojan horse - whatever it's called, the more difficult it will be to remove it from everywhere in general. Apparently, it searches web sites (not a difficult task) for any mention of email addresses (not difficult either, just search for the "@" character) and starts a vicious cycle of forging email addresses from recipients to other recipients. That's why we've been seeing mail to and from OBC members, including the site's email aliases - webmaster@oldbaseball.com, treasurer@oldbaseball.com. Obviously, nobody is doing this intentionally, but for now the thing to do is treat any email with an attached executable file as suspect, even if from trusted addresses. They usually look like a spreadsheet, program file, or picture hooked up as an attachment to an email with a blank message. Delete them at once. I have an older computer which works but I no longer use it, which I'd like to use to examine the behavior of the latest nasty viruses in a completely contained environment. (Sorry about that, I'm reading a Tom Clancy novel and they're developing an Ebola biological warfare threat in "Executive Orders", and talking like that just sounds so cool.) To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com Yesterday I received a package with a book I won on eBay which absolutely blew my mind (granted, my mind is easily blown). I won an original copy of the 1975 Sports Collectors Bible by Bert Sugar - for the face value cover price of $9.95, plus four cents! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1850180723&rd=1 This book was everything I expected it to be and much more. For anyone who doesn't have a copy of Jeff Burdick's "The American Card Catalog" from 1960, I think Richard Gelman is selling reprint copies of it and it has always been a valuable reference especially in my development of the Baseball Card Images project (free CD of 25,000 BBC images available on request). This book I just won, though, was published in 1975, with amazingly complete checklists (of cards known at the time) along with the expectable way out-of-date prices. But the very neat thing about the way the book is organized is that it extended Burdick's classification system to cover issues up to and including 1974. For example, if someone offered type cards of the F283-3 set, you might think of exotic, rare, regional food issues from the early 1940's, but it's actually 1972 Kelloggs 3D. The book has detailed information on about 40 sets I'd never heard of before, which is saying a lot because I've been neck-deep in this kind of research for the past 2 1/2 years. If you read the description, the author was very careful to be accurate: "The card features a Korean war-worn uniform swatch". Notice that it does not say it is a swatch from Ted William's Korean War uniform, because it's not. Topps was very careful to advertise that they had simply bought several Korean War uniforms, but they did not belong to any baseball players. It was just a lazy Sunday afternoon and was not doing anything much except cleaning up the printing press :>) The phone rings, which is a little unusual in itself and I answer which is even more unusual coz the kids usually race to get it. But it was a real nice day outside and they were all playing and running around, just like kids everywhere do. So I asked who is this and the voice says "It's Mike Rich". For a brief moment my mind went a little blank (at my age that is starting to happen a lot more than I care to admit) and I'm trying to think, Mike Rich?? I don't have any friends here with that name! Well, instantly (well almost) the light comes on and I'm shocked (again that brief moment) to hear a voice from one of my brothers in OBC. First I try to tell Mike that as much as I appreciate and cherish the call, it's a little expensive to call the Philippines and I wanted to keep the conversation as brief as possible. But he told me he has a lot of calling plans at his disposal and it's only costing him $.25 a minute. Wow, that's a great deal! Anyway we talk about a lot of stuff, OBC and cards and Oddball sets :>) and the strike, my life in the Philippines, family. I can't begin to tell you what a thrill it turned out to be to talk with Mike. That kind of thoughtfulness is what really OBC is about. The only other OBCer that I think I've ever spoken to personally is Ron "The King" Kingsbury, who still remains a very close friend. Mike, I can't begin to thank you for your kindness, it really made my week start off with a bang! Well I heard from Mike as well,

It's not even my birthday, but Mike was going to be a few miles from my house today on business and he called to get together afterwards.  I have been to Mike's home a number of times and I have not as of yet been able to return the favor.  Unfortunately as luck would have it, I had to attend a schedule a meeting at the school and could not meet up with Mike on this occasion.  Perhaps when he calls again it will be a better time.  I always enjoy our conversation weather they are on the phone or in person, Mike is good people!!!  BE WELL!!!

I rarely watch baseball on television, call me a purist, but I like it at the park better. Every now and then I get a call from my television watching friends and I flip over (like when Mark Grace---one of my favs.--pitched the other night). Tonight, my trusty baseball friends called me to watch the A's game...apparently the Royals were making a comeback...I was sucked in. The A's played a horrible game giving up an 11 run lead. Of course the drama came down to the bottom of the ninth again. The A's pulled out their 20th straight win on a walk-off homerun (Hatteberg off the bench). This is why I love the game...the drama. In no other sport is the drama like this. More often in baseball than any other sport does it come down to drama like this. The ninth inning tonight took nearly 20 minutes to complete. Hitchcock always knew that the longer the suspense the better the release (just watch North by Northwest) or Speilberg's use of the shark in Jaws (he did not show it until 2/3 of the way through). Baseball has that drama nearly every game. Very rarely do we get a true blowout like the Dodgers-D-Backs game the other day. Most games end with the teams within 3 runs. Now, back to the A's and Angels...two teams that are complete opposites. The A's are a team built to win. Solid young pitching and great power and free-agent pick-ups. The A's are powered by three future all-star pitchers--Mulder, Zito, and Hudson and a bullpen that is wonderful made better by the addition of Koch and Rincon. Tejada is the MVP (and better get it--A-rod can hit and field but can he win?), Dye, Chavez, Long, and Hatteberg all have All-Star potential. This is a team that should win 20 straight. So why are they only 3 game up in the standings? Because they are facing my favorite kind of team, the Angels... The Angels are winning for no other reason than they are coached well. Yep, I give the Angels my nod for best coached team of the last 20 years. This is a team built of young and old talent, scrappy, veteran, has-beens, and never should have beens...the Angels big trade this year involved getting Alex Ochoa (who?). The Angels are led by a group of guys who I loved rooting for when they played, many of whom were on the Dodger 1988 championship team. Led by Mike Scioscia, the Dodger I met at my fantasy day on the field in '97. He was the back-up backstop for the Angels for several years and was the best plate blocker of his era. The guy could stop a truck at the plate. He was a big man. He knows his baseball too and has surrounded himself with guys who made the major leauges with determination and scrappiness. His coaching staff is a reflection of his players. Bud Black has turned one all-star(Washburn), two has-beens---Sele and Appier, and a bunch of rookies and young pitchers into a solid staff. The bullpen is even better, best ERA in the leauge. It always makes me laugh when someone points out that the best hitting coaches are the ones that can't hit. Mickey Hatcher was once described as the worst hitting, slowest, and sloppiest player in the majors by a reporter. Mickey retorted by saying my all time favorite baseball quote, "I would rather be the worst player in the major leauges than not be in them at all." Mickey was smart when he played. He once rounded third on a sinlge and knowing his speed was lacking started yelling "CUT,CUT." The third baseman thinking it was the catcher, cut the ball and Mickey scored standing up. Mickey was also full of hustle. He always ran out his walks, and ran on and off of the field. Mickey has taken his love of the game, his knowledge and his hustle and turned some of the games unlikeliest players into All-Star caliber players...Darin Erstad, Tim Salmon, and Garrett Anderson (the most underrated player in the majors) were solid. Add to them a guy who was told he could never play major leauge baseball because he was too small (and then went on to set the University of Miami record for hits), Eckstein, a CSUN alumni who I watched played and even had a class with, who I thought was good but not great, Kennedy, Speizo, a journeyman firstbaseman who finally is getting a chance to play every day, a DH who barely hits his weight and has more timely RBIs than anyone else on the team, a third baseman who hits for no avg. but manages to produce tons of runs and rarely strikesout. And two catching brothers who hit when needed. They rarely waste Alfredo Griffin and Ron Roenicke (two more ex-Dodger teammates) have the Angels playing small ball. They hit singles and doubles, run like wild, take extra bases, steal home, and rally with the best of them. Add to that, the Angels make very few errors and play very smart. The Angels are a team to watch for no other reason than they are exciting and add drama to every game. There are two other intangibles that I need to mention on why I have become an Angel fan the past few years...first is their sense of fun. They play the game serious and hard (Erstad and Eckstein would explode is they ever smiled on the field). Off the field the Angels are fun. I have been at signings with them, events before the games, and seen interviews. This is a closeknit team and has a sense of community and fun. Part of this is their front office personnel including Bill Stoneman who has been a great G.M. Also the Angels took a chance and hired Rex Hudler to do play-by-play and color for their local broadcasts (every now and then he turns up on Fox too). Rex (known as the "Wonder Dog") is one of the best analysts, color men, and play by play guys I have ever heard. He is funny, interesting, and knows his stuff better than 20 Joe Morgans...He also has a personal relationship with most of the Angels players and coaches and gets great interviews and insights. The only analyst that I think may be better is Harold Reynolds of ESPN. (BTW, Rex and Harold are friends and often mention each other in broadcasts). The last thing I love about the Angels is the rally monkey. Three years ago, during a very bad Angel's game a monkey showed up on the screen clapping. The screen operator thought it would be funny. The Angels rallied from something like 6 runs down and won. Then he showed it again the next time they were down and the Angels won again. Thus a mascot was born. Since then the Angels have been selling tons of rally monkeys at games, t-shirts, puppets, towels, etc. Even the Dodgers have started selling Dodger rally monkeys. I like the rally monkey...it is funny and reminds me of the old rally caps and homer hankies. I am truly looking forward to the last month of the season...I hope the A's and Angels meet in the playoffs (although, I think the Angels with play tough, the A's pitching is just too good and we all know that pitching wins Boy....I feel like Ken... ================= To: Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Oakland Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 00:53:10 -0700 From: "Geordie Calvert" Hi all - wow, what a night. Just got back from one of the most amazing games I've seen. Yesterday, I won tickets from the local sports station for tonight's A's - Royals game. Can't believe what I witnessed! Three triplesin the first inning. The A's scoring at will (I had visions of them easily eclipsing the 19 the Dodgers put on AZ the other night). Then Tejada's error, which led to 5 unearned runs. No problem, the A's will score more, right? Uh, no. But then again, they can't possibly give up 6 more runs to erase an 11-0 lead, right? Uh, yes. Then of course Hatteberg does his thing. Wow! Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 11:34:32 -0600 From: "Todd Knowles" I haven't been very active OBC-wise as of late; but I have been A week ago Monday was my son Brandon's 9th birthday. We celebrated by taking in a Great Falls Dodgers (Pioneer League-short season A) game. It was also Pedro Martinez Bobblehead night! In case you were wondering, Pedro started his career here in Great Falls. It turned out to be a great game-the locals came back from 9-4 in the bottom of the 9th to tie it up and won it in the bottom of the 14th. Prospect update: Two years ago I wrote about 2 up-and-comers with the Dodgers: The first, Jason Repko, has made it to AA, but has struggled a bit. The other, Ricardo Rodriguez, starts his 3rd Major League game for the Indians tonight (he was traded to the Tribe for Paul Shuey) Not too bad; from rookie league ball to the Bigs in 2 years! Last year's prospect, Sean Pierce, is in long-season A-ball this year. So now for my picks for this year. Jonathan Figueroa and James Loney. Both just got promoted to long-season A. Figueroa is a pitcher with a hard fastball and great control. Loney is a first baseman just out of high school (he was the Dodgers' first round pick this year), a lefty with a swing reminiscient of John Olerud. Watch for these guys in the years to come. WARNING-the next paragraph contains graphic, Grant Rainsley/Savary Island-esque stuff...... Last Thursday was the first day of school here. I had the day off, so I was busy working on the addition to our house, which just passed the one-year mark since groundbreaking. I was cutting a piece of hardwood flooring on the table saw when the rip fence slipped (I forgot to lock it down), and the board slipped, and my left thumb slipped into the saw blade. Took off about a quarter inch off the tip of my thumb, but fortunately I just grazed the bone. Adrenaline took over at this point--I wrapped up my thumb and drove to the emergency room. They cleaned it up for me and had me see a hand specialist. He was able to suture up loose part except for a small piece on the side. I won't be playing the piano anytime soon (not that I ever could before) but it could have been a lot worse. Okay, no more gory stuff.. Last night was the last regular season Dodger game. They had already clinched the first-half championship and were playing the second-half champs, the Billings Mustangs (Reds affilliate). The Mustags are managed by one of my all-time favorite Sawx, the Rooster, Rick Burleson. Normally, I'm not an autograph hound, but since I had a brand new AL ball, I decided to hit him up after the game. I called out to him, and he looked over my way (I was outfitted in my Red Sox jersey and cap), smiled and said he'd be over in a minute. After visiting with his coaches, he came over and signed my ball. I got to chat with him for a few minutes before he had to go. He also signed a ball for Brandon and shook my hand before he left. As fiesty as he was on the field, even now as a manager, he's pretty laid back off it. All in all, not a bad week. Not quite two thumbs up anymore, I never met an OBCer I didn't like.... ================= Date: 05 Sep 2002 12:57:53 -0500 Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] HOF autographs wanted especially 3x5 index cards To: , From: Roger Raum I think Lee MacPhail is still alive or one of them is anyway. Been a couple weeks since I wrote, so I think some of you have forgotten how
boring my e-mail can get. Lots going on, not much good. I think I told some of
you my wife got laid off. She is getting more hours at the second job but it
does not pay as well so now she is looking for a new second job.
Some of you have heard about a possible Boeing strike and wondered if that
would affect me. The rest of you are smarter than me and know that it will if
it happens. Well you all are smarter than me, but might not have put the two
things together.
More bad news, I bought an SUV. What could be bad about that, you ask? I had
to buy a new vehicle. I had a small accident, luckily the only thing hurt was
my wallet. The Buick was in sad shape before the wreck, and I didn't help it.
At night what headlights I had left were going 4 different directions (kinda
of like me). On the way to the dealer it turned over 200K. It was time to
upgrade so I got talked into this SUV, big payments and even bigger
Insurance(triple!) The weirdest part was I dislike Fords but I think Earl put
some kind of sumliminal thing in me when we were staying in Chicago and I
ended up with an Explorer. If it ever breaks down, I got a big "I told you so,
Earl" saved up.
Anyway, besides the M's tanking their lead and slipping away from any Playoff
hope, things are about normal. One last thing, last week was our 23rd
aniversary. Nothing but bad news lately

From: LUURSCJG@aol.com

I want to thank AL CROTTE with a nice visit when I was in Columbus over Labor
Day weekend. While it was short because of other obligations to family
members, he did actually get me to enjoy a soccer match which I must admit I
never thought I would ever say. (Score was 0-0 too)

Now my rambling ----this week it has been decided that we have lived to long
in one area......Minneapolis has been home for 21 years......20 with the same
woman and 14 in the same house.

Kris has been offered a new job opportunity in Fort Collins, Colorado and
with my company having a company in Denver it was decided that maybe it was
time to start a new. I must admit even I was excited about starting over but
in last few hours the anxiety has set in. The doubt about an old person
starting over in a new city.

I listed the pro and cons ,,,,,,,you know old friends vs. new friends. Pay
now Vs starting over in a new city at 10% less in commission but a chance to
make up for it as Denver supposedly has more work.

Those are the doubts now for the fun stuff I can make Rick Ellison look like
the second coming of Tiger Wood in Las Vegas and in two years when nationals
are in Anaheim I can meet (there are a lot but these two are special in my
mind) the Fitaks in person. I mean if I can get to California it got to be
close right.

Anyhow I will be in and out over next few month as we try to piece this
together and hope to hook up with the Colorado contingency as soon as we
settle in

PS This job has been offered by a government agency who stated not to worry
everything is OK. I thinks that about same time my doubts started.

From: jazzgirl1920s@aol.com

hi- this is Linda- Today me and my husband went to the biggest card show in
our Los Angeles area- Naxcom's West Coast Collectables Convention at
Hollywood Park Casino and Convention Center- We went expecting the usual
overpriced ,limited vintage inventory local dealers we usually see- We
finally had one of the legendary OBC friendly dealers so many OBC members
have told us about there with a table - His 1st time doing this show- Roger
Newfeldt --Now i know how guys like Ken Morganti and Steve Rittenberg ,who
have mentioned this dealer in ramblings, get all those tons of rare vintage
cards at reasonable prices. The problem is i don't have access to dealers like
Tourdot, John Morrison, and Newfeldt here because they don't do shows on the
West Coast- until today- Newfeldt's inventory is an eye opener- This dealer
had a LOT of pre war cards i had never seen before- local dealers sure don't
have those Dockman's or rare E series cards-i can only wonder what it must be
like to go to the Ft. Washington show with a whole bunch of these OBC type
friendly dealers like Newfeldt there selling vintage cards at reasonable
prices- When Newfeldt found out i was an OBC member he like opened the Castle
doors and let me into the land of rare and reasonably priced vintage
cards-and Tim who never hardly buys ANY cards from local dealers starting
buying a LOT of cards from Neufeldt-10X more than i have ever seen him buy
from any local dealer- Cards dealers here NEVER have-i got some rare cards i
have only been able to dream about owning from Neufeldt like a 1948 Leaf SP
of Virgil Trucks (no dealer here has EVER had one of those Leaf SP's) -a 1948
Leaf Johnny Vandermere,4 1964 Topps standups in EX+ shape,3 Glendale Hot
Dogs-- Johnny Bucha,Russ Sullivan Jerry Priddy---a 1955 Topps Koufax
Rookie-,--- a stack of 52 bowman , 53 topps, 53 Bowman color & B&W's at from
$1 to $3 each!!!!- No way can you buy those cards that cheap here from ANY
dealer---a 53 Color Bowman- Campy for $20!!!!--YES how sweeeeet it is!!---and
older non sports never available here like a Capt. Kidd - Look and See, a
Scoops opening of the Brooklyn Bridge card, a Fighting Marines #33- Rescue at
Sea, a Look and See Charles Dickens- + a dozen other never seen here older
non sports--Neufeldt pulled out a bunch of 55 and 56 topps for me at $1 each-
even gave me free ones!!--also got a 63 Fleer Joe Adcock for $12!!!-No dealer
here even has that rare card --- also my 1st Swell "The Babe Ruth Story" in
the making card- #22- one with Bendix and Ted Lyons- Finally, one of those
great OBC dealers i have been hearing so much about did a show in my area- i
had a great time and to show how great Neufeldt's prices were i spent over
$750 at his table today- i wish some of the other legendary OBC dealers like
Tourdot would do a show in my area- Linda

attacks so it was understandibly slow. I decided to give it another chance.
Lots of memoribilia and lots of new stuff with a few vintage dealers
scattered about. I found some 1971 high numbers in a dime box and a 1967
high number hit for .50. My biggest find was (drumroll, please)...an Obak
hit! Finding an Obak card that I still need is big news for me as I only
have 21 to go (inluding one incoming). That made my day and I'm glad it did
because other than the Obak, I didn't find much. Don't cry for me though...I
have a tee time tomorrow at 8:18 and the Shriner's show is only two months

Dealers I spoke to said they did well yesterday. A couple also mentioned
some Ken Morganti sightings yesterday too. Somehow, I don't think this is a
coincidence :-)

Happy Collecting!

> Do you think the NL is afraid?

well, let's see. his batting average has nothing to do with intentional
walks. he can only help or hurt his batting average if he is pitched to.
same with his slugging percentage. he has 41 home runs, which means 41 of
his RBI have nothing to do with helping the runners on base score.
therefore, he has "only" knocked in 49 runners. and of course, you have to
subtract out those runners who scored on a homer who were on 1st base, since
they weren't in scoring position. don't have the stats on those, but let's
say it is one third of the runners he knocked in (3 bases, seems to make
sense). so, he has only knocked in about 33 runners.

only? in 68 at bats? is the national league afraid? they ought to be --
juiced ball or not, like hi or not, bonds may very well be the greatest all
around hitter of all time!

Ok, here are some remnants of this year's National...OBC Rules apply...

60 Leaf- 71- Herzog

60T-23,26,30,56,67,76,107,178 (grey),197(grey),233,341 (grey),378
(2),397,432,463 (grey)
56T- 19 (Billy Herman)
57T- 201 (Sandy Amoros)

Is anyone doing 72 OPC? I won a nice lot and I'm pulling the Mets and Yanks,
which leaves a bunch leftover...let me know what you need.

Also, been thinking about the talk of an all-OBC set. I was thinking of the
blue/red backs, but that would be a truly lifetime task, so I'm thinking of
subsets like 60s Topps Embossed or Foldups. Any opinions on this?

Ok, Hopefully, I'll get the rest in order and have my lists updated before
the end of the year!

After several hours tyring to reformat my hard drive

I have a web site that is entirely devoted to vintage

Good points Gary, just the kind of discussion I was prompting !

To further stir the pot, here are just a few of the deeper, inside numbers:

Bonds has hit 5 home runs with just a runner on first.
His actual total RBI with runners in scoring position is 48 in 69 AB.

He knocks 'em in when he gets the chance, but look at this :

With runner(s) on and firstbase open, he has approached the dish 76 times, but
was walked an astounding 49 times, only getting 27 AB in those situations.
The teams clearly will not pitch to Barry.

The man is having a season to remember, you just have to dig into the reason
he doesn't have 73 HR's this year.

But , alas, he doesn't play for the Phillies, so I have to admire him from afar.
Last season, playing Fantasy baseball against one of oldest and dearest friends,
he mocked me for choosing Bonds and Ichiro as two of my outfielders....I
got both league MVP's out of it !!

I'm not even playing this year, but the "I TOLD YOU SO " is still happening!!

the list of candidates is somewhat small. you have, as i see it:

babe ruth
ted williams
mike schmidt
hank aaron
willie mays
stan musial
frank robinson
mickey mantle
lou gehrig
.....and barry

my vote goes to hammerin' hank--not only the all time hr leader but he did a
lot of it during a period where pitching was dominant. i think they guys who
played in the 60's and had big years were more frightening than the guys from
the 30's. hitters ruled in the 30's, not so in the 60's.

Kaat and Joaquin Andujar. Thanks Joe!

Erik Greenwood - Erik stuns me with a great assortment of cards - '70s of Fergie
Jenkins and All Stars Rose and Carew, '66 Charlie Smith, a '74 Frank Robbie,
a '73 Twins team and '71s of Garvey, Cubs team and Orioles team. The
'71 Cubs team is my favorite Cubs' floating heads cards because of the "signatures."
These cards are great, thanks Erik

Richard Kimball - the Fugitive hits a list that I think will never be complete.
Psix whopping hits to the psycho pseventy-two pset!! All of them In Action
and unbelievably all high numbers. Foli, Blefary, Gallagher, Kaat, Griffin
and Corrales. Also included were two '78s, Andujar and a checklist.
 Wow, thank you Richard!!

Cobb belongs on the list. But Bonds? He's had two or three awesome years.
I know it sounds like I'm downplaying his accomplishments but he has no
one to hit behind him in the Giants lineup. To me, thats why he's getting
walked even more often than last year. Maybe last year was the greatest
single season ever, but I don't think that means he's the greatest all around
hitter. He's morphed from a guy with speed to one with power which no
one else has ever done.

Has anyone seen any recent sabermetric studies (from Bill James or Pete Palmer)
showing where Bonds stacks up in a single season or lifetime comparison?
Any standard of measurement is arbitrary to me but its still a fun debate.
I just finished reading a book which I do NOT recommend which takesa
look at the discussion of who is the greatest hitter of all time. To the
author, "greatest hitter" means hitter for average. I think that's toonarrow
a definition. Then he makes a bunch of statistical adjustments to
lifetime records and comes up with TONY GWYNN as number one. Sorry Rex,but
that's too much for me to agree with.

My two cents.

ps If anyone finds a used copy (for about $10) of the new Bill James Historical
Abstract, I'd love to buy it. I can't find it at the library yet andbookstores
are asking for $40+ On second thought, I'll wait for it to come
out at the library. Shipping iwill cost half as much as the book so its
not worth it.

Ty Cobb may have been a jerk but he is still one of the greatest of his

any sport that I can think of "off hand", although Edwin Moses (hurdles)
won over 100 races in a row I think (right Ed?) As far as "total"
offense in the last 40 years, Bonds is probably #1 in my book. I bet
Linda will throw in a vote for Canseco . I
still can't believe McGwire retired :-( And what about Barry Sanders &

Funny you should mention that, Steve. I had felt about Bonds much as you do
below until I read Bill James' updated Historical Baseball Abstract, which
is an amazing book. In it he ranked Bonds as the 3rd greatest left fielder
of all time, behind only Williams and Musial, and the 16th greatest player
of all time. And that was done BEFORE the 2001 season. I can only imagine
where he'd place him now-- I bet he'd be top ten by now--.

Get that book, guys, if you like the stat stuff as I do--

"traded cards" from the 50s and 60s. I let OBCers have at them on a couple
of occasions. A few were picked out but much is left.

So here's the deal: if you want me to send you some "traded" cards, send your
list to the server. With so many guys in OBC, its become a chore to go
through everyone's list. Besides, I don't know who minds getting these beauties.
I personally have mixed feelings about cards with writing on them.
I suppose they'd make a nice subset on their own, but I prefer to upgrade
them when the opportunity is there.

There is a nice mix of cards from about 1957 through 1980. There are still
one or two stars left -- I forgot who (if anyone) took the '57 Berra and F.
Robinson at the National.

Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Subject: Cards for Danielle
Date: Mon, 9 Sep 2002 11:13:13 +0000
From:

Last week, my boss came to me with a strange request. He and his family love
travelling to the States on holiday every year - New England in particular -
and it seems that his 12 year old daughter had asked him about baseball
cards. She had read about this peculiar American hobby, and asked her
Dad if he knew where she could get some. He in turn came to me, and asked if
I had any cards that Danielle could have. I said I'd have a look and get
back to him.

Next day, I handed him a box of about 300 cards, mostly UV stuff from the
mid to late '90s. He was a bit stumped by this, as he expected perhaps a
half dozen or so. As it turns out, Danielle was really pleased with this
package, and has spent the past week reading them and sorting them out.
Today, I received a handwritten card from her, thanking me for giving her a
"great introduction to baseball cards".

My reason for passing this story on to you is this. I'd like to pass a few
more cards on to Danielle, and was hoping that some of those among you who
collect newer stuff might have a few dupes to pass along. I think Danielle
would get a real kick out of receiving some cards direct from the States.
More to the point, it'd be nice to give her some cards of players with names
that she might recognise from TV.

I'd be happy to pass on anything you can spare to her. I'm sure Danielle
would be very appreciative of anything coming her way.

Cheers for now!

Ps Additionally, this helps me to score points with the boss!!

mind paying a couple of bucks to have her recieve cards from California.

I received an E-mail from Iggy earlier today. For those that do not
know, Iggy hass hurt his hand and can barely type. Maybe we should
all send him cards with sharp edges, to give him some more paper
cuts! Iggy was responding to me harrassing him for driving up the
price of an Ebay lot. I wasa the opening bidder and put in a max
bid about 50% over the minimum bid price. Iggy had set up his sniper
bidding when he saw the lot and it ended up driving up the price to
me about $15. Iggy had not checked the lot again to see that there
was a bid and it was by a fellow OBCer. There has been many posts
about sniper programs and Ebay bidding. I do not know if anyone else
has mentioned this problem. By waiting and using the shiper software
we may be bidding against other members of the group. I know myself
and many others, will not bid against other members of OBC. Just
something to think about.
To most people the NFL season just started. Here in Detroit, other
than seeing the new Ford Field, there is already a wait until next
year mentality. Tigers and Lions. Hard to believe we have Comerica
Park and Ford Field and they put those teams out there to play.
Thank G-d for the Red Wings and the Pistons are OK as well.
Ernie Harwell retiring. I feel sorry for any true BB fan who has NOT
heard Ernie announce a game. I fell asleep to his voice many times
as a kid in the late 60s and early 70s. I have previously posted
Rambles about going to Ernie's house and meeting him and his wife,
Lulu. A true gentleman and an incredible ambassador for the game.

Good idea Josh, I think Danielle would get a kick out of getting cards
from across the US.
Glenn, a few years ago my daughter Kelli lost a baby at 7 1/2 months.
The plan was to name her Danielle. It would be a real pleasure to sent
Danielle some cards.

Thanks for the heads-up Brock,

I've seen his stuff before - it's a shame that a few "bad" sellers can make eBay such a scary place.  Most of the time sellers are happy to work out little problems but it looks like you found the exception - that Dawg won't be getting my business.  BE WELL!!!

There was no crease in any of my 1934 Goudey cards when I sold them!  As I

and wondered if anyone has any information on them. I picked up three cards
from the 3rd series, fourteen out of the fifteen cards in the 7th series and
a complete set of the 8th series (many in NM condition)

Any help would be appreciated, plus feel free to let me know if you are
interested in them. I don't collect non-sport but I know some of you do, so
I suppose I picked them up for you guys. Condition varies, but I would say
all of them are VG or better (not including the writing on the back of one of
them) and most are in the EX range.

From: keithsummers@webtv.net

He has already left positive feedback for both cards. I'd tell him to
send back at least $5 or he gets his 1st negative. That is, IF you are
"sure" the pkg wasn't damaged & he actually sent the card with a crease
already in it. I've never left a negative feedback & never rcvd one but
I have suggested a deal like this about 4 times & in all 4 cases I rcvd
a full refund or the partial refund I requested. I know that going from
NM to VG is worth more than $5 so it's a great deal for him to spare 2
possible negatives. Of course $5 is worth far more to me than to you
but it's the principle of the thing. If the card really was shipped
creased, you "should" leave a negative (esp since you can't get 1 back)
to warn future bidders who aren't in OBC or VCT. Plus 2 months from now
how many of us will even remember his ID? Nobody ever established a
page of bad sellers to OBC or VCT people did they? In other words, we
may end up bidding of some of his stuff later unless the 1 negative you
leave throws up a flag or reminder for us. At the very least I hope you
give him a neutral and say SENT VG CARD LISTED AS MINT/REFUSED $5 REBATE
ON $40. But give him one last chance :-)
I mailed out 3 pkgs last week but still have about 11 more to go to
be fully caught up.
I have a Domino Disc (PX-7?) Wilson Pitt from 1909 or so (I don't
have it or the SCD book in front of me) that I'd swap for a T206 Sid
Smith Atlanta (any cond) or any ED SUMMERS tobacco card in ANY
condition. There's another Atlanta T206 guy I want but I can't remember
his name (it's on my eccentric want list below). I got it from
DoubleHeaders many yrs ago for about $14-$17. I'll also accept hits to
the lists of: Lynn Miller, Wayne Delia, Bob D'Angelo or Bob Donaldson!
Email me for more info or a photo (of the disc, not the guys!). Put on
your UV protective specs before clicking! Go Sooners!

From:

Thanks to all of you who responded to my appeal for cards for my boss’s daughter! A few of you have asked about sending stuff straight to her, and I thought that rather than reply to you all individually, I’d lay out the situation here.

My boss is a fairly private man who tends to keep his family life quite distinctly separate from work. To be honest, I would feel awkward in asking him for his home address. Indeed, it’s something I’d rather not do. Therefore, here is what I propose.

If you have anything that you’d like to send to Danielle, simply post it to me and put a letter “D” on the back of the envelope. I’ll pass anything like that on to her. Because of her family’s annual vacations in the northeastern US, I’m led to believe that Danielle has an affinity for the Red Sox and the Yankees. Also, bear in mind that it’s really newer stuff that would be most welcome, so that she can tie up the names on the cards with the players mentioned in what little coverage we get over here. Slightly older stuff will not go amiss though!

It’ll be some time before you hear how this little project has gone, since I’m on vacation from the 13th of September until the Oct. 7th, but I’ll get back to you with some news as soon as I can!

Cheers for now!

I've received a few notes the past few days about packages being returned to sender from my old address. I sincerely apologize for this mix-up. I sent the message below to the group on August 6. The directory has also not yet been changed.
I had to move a few months ago because of a marriage break-up. I had thought my ex-wife would have kept my mail for me and sent it over with the kids, but apparently that's not happening. Just another of the many stab wounds I've had to endure from her. I am sorry that the packages got sent back.

Hello all,

Most of you have probably not heard of me yet, as I have just become a member last month. Unfortunately, my membership to the group was approved just as I have had to start dealing with a separation from my wife (and my kids, kind of).

To make a long story really short, I've moved, everything is packed in boxes, and most of my lists are on the computer at my ex's place. I'm kind of disorganized right now, and I don't have the opportunity or the inclination to do anything with cards at the moment. I'm way out in left field, so to speak.

So, I just wanted to apologize to you all for not participating in the group thus far and I wanted to let everyone know that there is a reason - I'd really like to be involved in the group. I hope you'll bear with me and I should be back in action soon.

I also have an address change to report - I'm not sure where I should be sending it, but hopefully it'll get to the right person from here.

Subject: Oakland: new quarterback
To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: HMorgan707@aol.com

The Coach had put together the perfect team for the Oakland Raiders. The
only thing he was missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the
colleges, and even the high schools, but he couldn't find a ringer
quarterback who could ensure a Super Bowl win.

Then one night, while watching CNN, he saw a war-zone scene in Afghanistan
In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Afghanistan soldier with
a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand grenade straight into a 3rd-story
window 200 yards away, KA-boom! He threw another
hand grenade into a group of 10 soldiers 100 yards away, KA-blooey! Then
a car passed, going 90 mph, bulls-eye! "What an arm!"

So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of football,
and the Raiders go on to win the Super Bowl for yet another time in history.
The young Afghani is hailed as the Great Hero of football, and when Coach
asks him what he wants, all the young man wants to do is to call his mother.

"Mom," he says into the phone, "I just won the Super Bowl!" "I don't want
to talk to you," the old woman says. "You deserted us. You are not my son."
"I don't think you understand, Mother!" the young man pleads. "I just won
the greatest sporting event in the world. I'm here among thousands of my
adoring fans."

"No, let me tell you," his mother retorts. "At this very moment, there
are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two
brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week, and this week
your sister was raped in broad daylight."

The old lady pauses, and then tearfully says, "I'll never forgive you for
making us move to Oakland."

OBC Friends...the only bad part about my annual trek to St. Louis for
the Phillies series was that I didn't get to meet with Kent Goto. The
rest was pretty good. Especially since the Phils SWEPT the Cards!
Unbeleivable!! The last time I went it was the other way around. The
strangest thing about the trip this year was that I took a friend. It's
usually a solo, mini-getaway for me. He came up from Texas and drove
out with me to see his Cardinals and take me down memory lane in his
hometown of Red Bud, IL.
The first game was the best. Extra innings (14)! That was really cool
considering we managed to sneak down into the box seats in the 8th. The
coolest thing happened before that game. We were watching the Phillies
take batting practice. There were people standing behind the dugout.
As I was walking around them, there was a "gap" in the line of people.
There I stood, wearing my Phillies shirt and hat, right in the line of
sight of John Vukovich, standing on the top step of the dugout. I
raised my hand and said, "Hi Vuke." He nodded and smiled, then reached
in his back pocket and tossed me a ball. I raised my hand again and
said, "Thanks Vuke!" I was the envy of everyone around me. It was a
really cool moment. The ball is now on display at The Kansas Phillies
Phoundation (my basement). To look at it is one thing....to hear me
tell the story as you look at it is another thing. I'm a lucky boy.
Next year, Kent and I WILL get together.

A change in the V03 dates...the 23-25 dates would put us in the Memorial Day

I yuk it up as much as any of you when it comes to Rick. I feel it is my duty
as an OBC'er to warn everyone of the power that Mr Rick Ellison has at his
disposal. He works for the US government as a Custom Agent, at least that is
his cover story. He is really one of the top operatives in the country and can
do things do you at any moment and you might not ever put 2 and 2 together. He
can be anywhere on any given day. He only needs to make a quick phone call and
you will not cross a border, take a flight or file your taxes without drawing
"special" attention. He also is an expert computer operator that can tap into
any system and mess with your e-mail, your bank accounts and your E-bay and
Paypal accounts. There are very few people alive who know this information
about Mr. Ellison and If I do not show up at V'03, you will know why. This
might be the last chance I get to warn the group to beware of what you say as

Baseball is cool. Baseball pictures are cool.
Action photos..player portraits..paintings..drawings....they're cool.

Below is a link to a cool baseball picture.
Let the picture load (you may have to hit reload) and if you think it's
cool...enjoy it...see if you know who it is..."relate" to it.
Let it remind you of just how cool baseball really is.
If you like, save it to a disc..or your own "Cool Baseball Pictures"
folder. (..you'll have to name it yourself)
I'll share a different cool baseball picture (.jpg) with ramblings

(I promise they won't ALL be Phillies)

Subject: Al the Altered

From: "Diamanti"

Well Guys and Gals:

I haven't had much to ramble about this spring or summer - been way too busy
with family, new business (coffee), and selling current home, buying new land,
arranging construction loan, etc. yadda-yadda, blah-blah. However! Ihave
stayed current with all the OBC list servers, reading them every day in
digest form, and I just can't take it anymore - Big Al, St. Al, whateverhe
calls himself now, has gone too far....

Something happened to Al when he was under, during surgery. Allow me to make
my case.....

Al goes to the Mike Hair Vegasfest and distinguishes himself as the OBC Spiritual
Leader. He returns home and begins to write reports - ramblings - BS-
whatever you want to tag it. I mean LOOONNGG ramblings, Ken Morganti-esque
ramblings. Most of you who know the OLD AL, know that he was a man of few
words, but memorable words, much like Yogi Berra in the current AFLAC commercial
(And they give you cash, which is just like money!). Al was famous
for non-sequiturs, insane comments, and pithy remarks. Now he is approaching
War and Peace when it comes to the printed word...What gives?

Then he goes to the National - returns home - and spews forth a 4 or 5 partRamblings
that I am still trying to understand. What could explain it? Did
they put in the heart valve from a dead poet? Did Al see Elvis?
So some of you are thinking: maybe Al had a writer buried within him all these
years, and now he's letting it out. I don't think so...I think it has X-Files
written all over it. He went to Vegas and it started from there. Maybe
Al took a little side trip to Roswell....Maybe Al saw some secret weapon
the government is working on in Nevada and the agents had to do a "Men in
Black" treatment to him with the flashy strobe thing-ee. Only it didn't take
- - it just PARTIALLY affected him, twirled him a bit, but didn't COMPLETELY
erase his memories. Changed his personality instead of blanking his memory

Why else would he type this when referring to Trips:

"He only needs to make a quick phone call and you will not cross a border, take
a flight or file your taxes without drawing "special" attention. He also
is an expert computer operator that can tap into
any system and mess with your e-mail, your bank accounts and your E-bay andPaypal
accounts. There are very few people alive who know this information."

For one thing, Trips had some lunatic hack into his Paypal account and messaround
with his 'expert computer'. How good can he be?! (By the way, no one
has seen or heard from the guy who hacked his Paypal account, but that's another
story.....) For another thing, Al is on this paranoid trip about government
agents, all powerful, etc. Get my drift here? Draw your own conclusions.....

By the way, I had a friend once who had a bad heart and needed an emergencybypass.
The gas man (anesthesiologist) had to do a quick calculation for the
intensity of the sleeping juice (they do this based on body weight, age,and
other factors) to keep my friend under. Wellllll.....my friend was a major
druggie and had been for DECADES, so when they put him under, he didn't
STAY UNDER, and he woke up during the heart bypass surgery, only troublewas
he couldn't open his eyes or speak (had the mask and tubes taped into his
mouth) so he had to lay there while they worked in his chest. Think about
THAT when you go in for your next surgery....

Laughing out George! I trust this fines everyone safe!

Please have Margaret in your thoughts tomorrow as she will be returning from
Mexico, she is at Club Med or something similar for business (somebody has to
do it). While I do not fear her flying (I think Doug said it well earlier) I
do have fear some nut will cause the airports to be difficult to travel
through. If we go to Code Red, just one step up, the airports will probably
be shut down.

I have Rob and all the New Yorkers in my thoughts tonight as I have many
friends/coworkers that lost there office at tower 7 on 9/11. Tower 7 was the
Customs House and sadly it is now gone. Old Customs Houses such as the one
here in San Francisco have significant historical value and follows the
history of this country much like our beloved baseball. I do not ever want to
hear of another one destroyed!

Be well my friends and we will all get through tomorrow and beyond together.
I better go watch some great baseball (I will be flipping from the Giants to
the A's games) to get my mind off current events! You'll gotta admit baseball
in the Bay Area, right now, is pretty exciting!

Another Baseball Quote:

"Guys in baseball are crazy. They don't understand the consequences of
hitting a man with a ball. They don't know the pain and discomfort and
downright danger to his life."

We just had our general membership meeting for the Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 11447 here in Subic Bay, Philippines. We had a special
memorial service at 12 noon our time, which would be midnight going to
the 11th your time. It was primarily to honor all the veterans who were
lost that day in the Pentagon and WTC Towers. This was being observed
in all VFW Posts worldwide at the same time. As an addendum to our own
little memorial service, I mentioned you and your fellow patriots as
well in our ceremony. And we sent a special blessing to all your
brothers who were lost and a heartfelt thanks to the real patriots that
day and in the days that followed. You will be starting your march at
about the same time I'm sending this. Our hearts are with you.

Subject: Bobby Thomson Ramble.....
Date: Thu, 12 Sep 2002 9:30:01 +0000
From:

Guys (and Gals),

Some of you may remember that a couple of years back I started a project to try to gather some info of Bobby Thomson, Glasgow’s most famous baseballing son, with a view towards trying to get him honored in some way within the town of his birth.

Due to a number of personal matters which had to be attended to, this project was put on indefinite hold, but not before I had corresponded with the man himself. The exchange resulted in a number of autographed cards coming my way – including a ‘49B that I had picked up for a few bucks in the Atlanta National in 1999 - and a book of old photos of the area of town where he was born heading back Stateside.

My interest in the project was, however, rekindled on Tuesday morning when out of the blue I received an email from a guy who works for the Wall Street Journal. Josh Prager had met Thomson a few weeks ago in the course of researching a book he is currently writing on the ’51 Giants, Thomson, and Ralph Branca. Bobby had shown him the letter that I had sent to him a few years ago, and suggested that I might be the guy to contact for some details of his early life in Glasgow.

Imagine that! Bobby Thomson not only remembered my having contacted him, but had actually kept my letter. How cool is that?

Anyway, Josh duly contacted me, and I pretty much wasted a whole morning at work while we swapped emails establishing just how much information each of us had. I had never quite been able to establish the exact location of Bobby’s birth, but Josh provided me with enough detail to give me a few ideas. I took the afternoon off to go to the local library to do some research, and was advised by the librarian of another city office where I may be able to get access to older public records. It was there that I found a copy of Bobby Thomson’s birth certificate, complete with his parent’s details, and the address of his birth – 29 Tennant Street, Glasgow.

From there, it was back to the library to pinpoint this location. I found it on a street map dated 1923 (Thomson’s year of birth), and on comparing this map with a current one, immediately realised that the tenement building in which he had been born had been demolished some years back to allow the construction of the main expressway through Glasgow and central Scotland, the M8. If fact, Thomson’s house lay directly under what is now Junction 15, right in the heart of the city.

Using the electoral register of the time, I was even able to come up with the names of the other families who lived at number 29 – it seems that there were 14 dwellings in that particular stairway. Another scan of the old map, cross-referenced with some old books, helped to established a little of what life was like in that area in the early ‘20s. A look out of the Thomson’s back window would have afforded you a view north over the Monklands Canal, which ran directly alongside Tennant St, to the St Rollox Chemical Works just beyond the canal. The local police station lay directly across the street, while the local wash house – where Mrs. Thomson would have done the family laundry and caught up with all the local gossip – was just around the corner on Kennedy St.

Bobby Thomson wouldn’t remember an awful lot of this himself, as he and his mother emigrated to the States in 1926 (when Bobby was 3), following his father James who had gone across in 1924.

Finally, a scan of old microfilmed newspapers turned up an article in the Scottish Daily Record from October 5th, 1951 all about the Scot who had reached the top of professional baseball and was at that time “more famous than the President”.

I’ve passed all of this info on to Josh, who immediately got back to me with an enthusiastically thankful email, an invitation to phone him when I get to the States next week, and a few more questions which we both hope that I’ll be able to answer on my return. He’s also promised me a substantial acknowledgement in his book.

Josh is meeting up with Bobby Thomson again in early October, when he’ll pass all of the info I came up with on to him. His impression – having met him once already – is that he’ll be very grateful. I’m looking forward to hearing how that goes!

Sorry about the Morganti-esque length of this message, but this was something that I was very excited about, and that I really felt I wanted to share with all of you!

Cheers for now!

I had the opportunity to visit the Bay Area on Tuesday, and along with that
came a trip to Pac Bell. I got to the stadium and went to our luxury box,
straight up from third base (the company sprung for the box, pretty cool).
Anyway, there is a guy shaking hands on the way in who looks familiar, but
someone I could never place.

When I get ready to go into the box, he shakes my hand and says "Hi, I'm
Vida Blue." I guess that the guy who owns the box knows Vida really well,
and when you get that box, you get Vida Blue too! He was in our box for at
least 80% of the game, and signed balls for everyone there. I even talked
trivia with him, saying that he was the answer to a very difficult trivia
question (Name the last AL MVP who was a switch hitter?). He knew the
question before I even asked it. He then gave me one, which was to name a
person at each position on the field who had won back-to-back MVP awards.
(Answer: Campy, Foxx, Morgan, Banks, Schmidt, Bonds, Mantle, Murphy,

In short, very cool to spend some time with Vida Blue, beautiful park, and
the home team won 5-2. Awesome night that I will never forget.

Howdy folks,

Looking for a new home tonight is a '61 All-Star Willie Mays, #579.
Sharp corners, perfect centering, impeccable color and original
gloss, no surface wear on either side. And, unfortunately, about 1/4
inch trimmed all along the top and left side of the card.

I've had him in my binder for years, just recently decided to
upgrade. Willie still looks pretty good for an old guy, though.
Somebody please give him a good home!

From: WMDpks@aol.com

Everyone drop what you're doing and check out the eBay site, hit Search, then
click on the "By Seller" tab and enter "oldbbcards" for the seller name.
There's currently over 350 cards available over the next two or three days
from OBC-friendly dealer John Morrison of Valley Cottage, NY. There's
something for everybody there, like a 1965 Carlton Rookie in really nice
shape currently sitting at $19.50, a nice 1962 Musial looking for an opening
bid at nine bucks, a 1963 Fleer Checklist waiting to open at $24, a
well-loved but collectable 1958 Willie Mays needing an opening bid of eight
bucks, fairly presentable 1957 Berra and 1957 Banks, both looking for a
starter at nine bucks apiece. There's a boatload of really decent mid-1950's
to late-1960's stars and superstars in better than usual OBC condition all at
John's typically reasonable prices. Check them out and support his auctions,
as he's supported OBC (me, in particular, and some others directly) for
several years now.

Hmm...with apologies to Rick (who I have gone to several A's games with) the
Angels just finished the best series of baseball since the World Series last
year. Every game came down to the late innings and coaching. The Angel's
manager again did it with his bench, defense and aggresiveness...Chavez ties
it up in the ninth with a HR but the Angels Erstad doubles, steals third, and
scores on a game winning hit by Scott Spezio. Another great game...I can't
remember a more exciting pennant race.

PS Go Halos.

Hi All,
Wayne kind of beat me to the punch on this one. I have also been a
long-time buyer of John's and have made many, many good deals with him
from my early days in OBC. And the beneficiaries have been all OBC. To
echo Wayne's comments, John is a real stand-up guy. Only downside to
his auctions is he doesn't do PayPal. But maybe some of you can
convince him otherwise. Some of you are familar with what became known
as "The Box" in one of the recent shows that John participated in. Jeff
DeLott made me aware of it by his Ramblings. I contacted John about it
and when he described it to me, I knew it had to become "OBC Property".
He made me a terrific offer that I couldn't refuse. "The Box", is
now in my possession. Recently it arrived and I've been going through
it. There were 1,155 cards in it. No cards for me, except for a couple
upgrades, which isn't hard to do in a lot of cases. But it's all great
OBC material from a single 33 Goudey and every year from 52-85 well
represented (the 80's cards are 1 Ryan, 9 Ripkens including a RC!, 6
Boggs, 2 Pucketts and a Clemens RC!) Just about every star from those
years is included, and multiples of many. So I can give the presses a
rest for awhile since John has given me enough to distribute to the
group for now :>) If any of you who were privy to "The Box" contents,
have any special cards in mind, drop me an email. But don't wait for
cards from me, bid on John's auctions :>)
Take care, Lynn

As a long time Dodger fan I feel as though I am going against the grain when
I say "Go Halos"!... but, what a great series against the A's. You have to
love the fact that the A's infield had to move-in to protect against a game
winning squeeze play - an act that would not have allowed them to get a DP to
end the inning!

There is nothing better than driving and being able to go back and forth
between the Dodgers and the Angels radio broadcasts.

Subject: Update from Rick!
From: Neal Thomas

Hi all-

I finally got the final card from Rick's 1955 set from ebay, and sent
out the cards to knock off his 1955 set a few days ago. I just got
this email from Rick's wife, Roberta. Her words tell the story
better than mine, so I will forward it to you. We did good, guys!

I also told Roberta if Rick keeps up the progress, we may have to
tackle another one of his sets!

Dear Neal,

Rick received your package and was once again totally touched and
delighted by the contents. He was able to tell me about this list he
had created of many cards that he hoped some day to find, but never
really expected to have. He said that most of the list was now
complete thanks to you all!

His speech therapist reported that their session today was primarily
conversation about baseball cards, a topic they touched on briefly
during their last visit. She commented that he is so much better at
communicating about things that have a personal meaning to him, far
better than he is when working on generic memory or processing tasks.
He was able to tell her about OBC, and your generous gift, and how
much he loved baseball cards.

The fact that he was able to share all that is evidence of his
continued recovery and healing. Expressing himself is still a
considerable challenge. He seems to have an easier time finding key
words to many of his thoughts, and eventually he or the listener can
piece together what he wants to say. He is still unable to write, and
his reading is limited. Sometimes he can look at something and
basically understand what it says, but he can't say the words out
loud. This is all so much better than he was last month, and
we all hope that much more progress will be made.

He has completed his third cycle of chemotherapy and had an MRI at
the end of August that showed the tumor as stable. He will continue
to take the chemo and be scanned every two months while he continues
this way, so our next scan will be at the end of October. He began
outpatient rehab therapy at the beginning of September and will
probably continue that indefinately.

He is walking with no assistance, and is totally physically
independent, which is huge for both of us.

I think that everyone in the family is beginning to relax a little
bit, and enjoy the routine we seemed to have fallen into. I am
relieved that the kids are in school, and it looks like Rick and I
will both have some quality time to share between all the running

I know that he is so anxious to connect with all of you again, and
you are all part of his daily thoughts. As much as he loves all the
cards, I know that he cares about you guys and your friendship so
much more than any card he could hold in his hands. You all have come
to fill a very special and meaningful place in his life, and I am
grateful for that. I know he wants to try to communicate on his own,
but I'm not sure what he has in mind.

Please know that we are both are eternally grateful for your support
and generosity. Please make sure that everyone involved receives our
thanks and gets an update on his progress. I will continue to keep
you posted. Please continue to keep us in your prayers.

Thank you again.

Roberta Redpath

I'm afraid I was blabbing incessantly about the AL West race and my Angels
to my bride today. She was pretty impressed, and even got the city right
where my Angels play. Heck of a race. She actually suggested that if the
Angels get through the playoffs (which I had to explain to her) that I
should just hop on a plane and go watch them play in the Series. Wow, I
thought, what an understanding woman. That's when the hammer fell...seems
like she wants credit for a trip of her own with her sisters, didn't tell me
where, just said it would be expensive. And warm. Geez.

Big Al invited Tiger Dave and I down to Seattle next weekend for an
M's/Angels game, and even said he would pay for the tix. Said we would be on
our own for beer though, so it would still be a pretty pricey adventure. I'm
assuming in the first place here that Al could FIND the stadium and give us
our tix, but after hearing some reports, I'm not so sure. Anyways, that
isn't going to work out, but thanks for the offer Al. Maybe see you up here
in Vancouver for "The Big One." (right) in October. Don't forget my hat!

On another note, I have been having some trouble with my mail program,
Outlook, which has developed a mind of its own. Spent a couple of hours on
the phone with techies from Microsoft a couple of weeks ago....why the heck
don't they have a 1-800 number? Likely cost me a fortune to find out what I
already knew, my mail program was screwed up. Anyways, seems some file or
files have been corrupted, whatever the heck that means...so when I send the
Directory out, it might look weird. My bride seems to think I (read we)
might be better off keeping it in a spreadsheet and sending it as an
attachment, and she is actually willing to show me how to do it. If anyone
has a problem with getting it as an attachment, please let me know....I do
have Norton Anti-Virus, which scans every email before it is sent, so it
should be okay. At least I have my wife to blame if it is not.

All for now....go ANGELS!

Anybody need some VGish 64 Topps cards?
No big names, but many memorable characters here:

109 Rusty Staub,110,119,121,134 Don Zimmer,
138,153 Dick Williams,157 Gene Mauch,158,166,
180 Tommy Davis,187,191,193,
348 Ed Lopat

Just claim 'em.

I've started gathering 64's to present to my pal Doug who collects old baseball
cards, but not sets. (yet)
(He is also the guy who gave me his T205 Walter Johnson for Xmas two years ago...just
cuz I needed one!)

These cards above are the dupes of my gathering efforts so far.
Certainly I'd accept any help in acquiring more towards Doug's 64 set. (He doesn't
know anything about it yet.. I have 135 or so, a long way from the 587
cardboards that Topps included that year)

Thanks OBC !

I don't know how to start. I've been in a crappy place for at least 18 months
now, probably longer. Wishing things would get better isn't working. The
latest screwup is that now I no longer have anything but emergency health
insurance. So now more doctor visits (including psychiatrist and therapist)
and no more prescription drugs. But I still won't look for a steadyjob.
 WHAT AN IDIOT.

It used to be that I'd escape from all my problems and be more involved in "cards".
Talking to OBCers online, working on my sets, sending out cards --
its all the same to me. But since the Naitonal, I haven't wanted to doany
of that. Even "cards" have become an effort for me. There must be about
a dozen people waiting for cards I promised them.

The debate about trading stresses me out. I wish I understood why. Although
I don't trade within OBC, I do lots of "dealer scum" deals. I don't feel
there is much of a difference between "trading" and "dealer scum" but the
debate seems to paint a broad brush condemning anything but giving cards
away. I have more time and opportunities to locate "good deals" but I can't
afford to give away all the good deals I find. I think that people appreciate
my efforts but when everyone else is talking about "the good olddays
when we were sending out Mantles by the pound", I feel pretty lousy asking
someone for $10 for a hard-to-find card from their list, even if I picked
it up specifically for that person.

I really don't know what to do regarding my life and my OBC activity. In both
cases, I am looking for more RULES. Tell me what is ok and I can cope.
I know that's not how life works -- I need to work out the rules for myself.
I wish I could sell off my entire collection (sets and dupes) and then
just disappear. I'd miss the OBC community but I have a hard time feeling
like I deserve to be part of it anymore. I better stop whining and boring
you all and start catching up on the cards I need to send. I'm very sorry
for not being active (sending out cards and otherwise) and for leaningon
the group so heavily.

Brian Dwyer finished 103rd in yesterday's prestigious Dutchess County
Classic, finishing the half-marathon in 1 hour, 42 minutes and 26 seconds -
good enough to place in the top 25% of the runners in that race. To give you
an idea of the pace, it's probably about the speed I could run for no more
than 1/4 mile before collapsing from exhaustion - and I'm a black belt &
former cross country runner myself. Rumor has it that Brian smoked the
competition because he thought there was a 1952 Topps Mantle at the finish

Keith, some banks in Canada do have a problem with U.S. M.O.'s. I just have
never understood why. One that is available for you to buy is pink, and that
one is an International M.O. No problem there. However, if you get the green
ones, they are negotiable only in the U.S. and Possessions. Last time I
looked, Canada wasn't one...still have the Maple Leaf flying up here. That
being said, the Credit Union I deal with seems to have no problem at all
taking those ones, but banks do. Go figure. As for checks (or up here
cheques, because of those silly French people back there) I have never had a
problem with those at all, so feel free to send me as many as you want :)

As for the Directory, thanks to all for several good suggestions, the
majority of which weren't rude. Looks like I'm going to have to bite the
bullet and try learning a new program like Excel. I always resist learning
something new and efficient based on the fact that I work for the Gov't. I
may be slow, but I do very poor work.

The rumor is true. Imagine my horror when I found out that only the top 100
got a Mantle. That's OK--I heard they were Mantles of the PSA 10 variety.
The trophy I got for my second place under-18 effort was much better.

As for pace, it was an easy 7:49 per mile. We'll have to get you ready for
the 25th anniversary race next September, Wayne!

Subject: Letter to Rick Redpath
From: Jerry Coker

The following letter is going out today or tomorrow to Rick with a small
package. I decided to post it here because it's essentially an OBC
ramble :)

Hi Rick:

I've enclosed a couple cards I hope you like, and an Old Time Baseball CD
that has some classic baseball games as well as an old Football game and
an old boxing match. The files are .mpg, so they should work using any
MPEG player. The games are usually broken down into three or four files
each. I think you'll really like the 1956 All-Star Game with 'Teddy
Ballgame' and a bunch of other HOFER's. Enjoy!

A side note. Over the past year I've started to collect and
repair/restore old AM and AM/FM broadcast radios. I owe it all to Dave
Fallen who sent OBC that great OT Baseball CD a couple Christmas's ago.
The old time broadcasts got me interested in old radios. I contacted Dave
and he told me about the old radios he had that he wanted to restore when
he retired. So that got me interested too. I bought my first old radio
off Ebay for $11.00. I fixed it and the rest is history :) I now have
quite a collection of old RCA, Philco, Zenith, etc. radios spanning the
years from about 1935-1958. Some work, and some I fix up as I have time.
It took me about a year to figure out the electronics, but since I already
repair my guitar tube amps, learning to repair old tube radios wasn't too
difficult. My biggest learning curve has been restoring/repairing the
wood and/or plastic cabinets :) I'm pretty good with electronics, but
stink when it comes to working with wood. Maybe some day my wife will get
interested in it. She is pretty good with staining and such :)

Anyway, just wanted to share with you one of my new hobbies. I thought
you might appreciate it. Oh I almost forgot the best part! I learned how
to build a mini AM radio transmitter that is within FCC guidelines. I can
put my old time baseball cd's in my computer and play them with my MPEG
player; feed the audio out of my pc audio card to the transmitter which
transmits at 1600khz; tune any or all of my old AM radios to 1600 on the
dial; and listen to the old games on the old radios. The first time I did
this I was listening to the 'Bobby Thomson' game (1951) on an old 1935
Sears Silvertone radio. My wife Teresa walked into my computer/radio room
and thought she'd walked into the Twilight Zone (I had turned the lights
out for good effect...all you could see was the warm glow of the tubes in
the back of the radio) :) Right now Teresa thinks I have too many
hobbies. Lets see, baseball cards, radios, guitars, computers...yep...
she's right!!

Also wanted to share with you part of my summer vacation. Teresa and my
daughter Sarah and I took a long vacation this year. One placed we
stopped was Cooperstown!! We spent two days there. What a great place.
I was able to spend two whole days (all day) in the Baseball HOF. They
had to kick me out the last night because they wanted to close and I was
running around all the different rooms trying to get one last glimpse of
everything :) Actually, they were very accommodating people. I was lucky
in that when we were in Cooperstown, it was early summer and they weren't
very crowded. I had a great time. I spent a lot of time in the 19th
century baseball area. They really have some neat old baseball stuff that
you just won't see anywhere else. I'm trying to collect some NL Boston
Braves, Beaneaters, etc. cards. I figure they eventually became the
Atlanta Braves, so it gives me some connection to the very distant past of
that organization and to old baseball in general. So see...I'm a Boston
fan too :) Actually, I root for the Red Sox every year. I love watching
baseball games at Fenway park on TV. Every year I hope it's the Braves
and Red Sox in the World Series! But the Braves always disappoint
me :) I've never been to Boston, but my wife
and I would really like to visit some time. Teresa once went to Boston
for a conference and said it was really neat. I'll LYK when we decide to
go! Oh yeah...when I was at Cooperstown Teresa and Sarah bought me 19th
Century baseball postcards for Fathers day. It has Mike 'King' Kelly, Kid
Nichols, Cap Anson, John Clarkson, just to name a few. Very cool. They
also bought me a copy of the book 'Rube Waddell'. Great book!. Highly
recommended. I just bought a Waddell T-206 off Ebay. It should be here
any day!! It's a beater, but it's the portrait! He was really a
character. There are some great comments by Connie Mack in the book about
Rube. I think Rube gave Connie premature grey hair :)

Well this is really becoming a Ramble. Maybe I should post this to
OBC-Ramble. Actually, I think I will. Ken might get a kick out of it
anyway :) So if you see this before you get my package...well...at least
you'll know what's coming :)

Well...I'll be talking to you later. Be thinking of me during the
Playoffs (and hopefully the World Series). If you hear someone holler, in
October 'Oh no...not again', well then you'll know that is me...and Lynn
Miller :) The Braves have always had such great pitching. But they can't
hit the broadside of a barn during the Playoffs. 'Maybe this year...' :)

Hi guys... I am totally jazzed about the news of Rick doing a little better.
This was a great project. I've got one more thing I'd like to initiate, if
you don't mind... I don't know how many of you are familiar with it, but
the awesome book "The Glory of Their Times" is out on Books On Tape/CD. The
kicker is that it isn't a read version of the book... it's the interviews
that Ritter conducted with the old ballplayers. I've had the cassette
version for years and it is very, very worn now. I was going to make a copy
of the cassettes to send to Rick, but while I was doing it I realized how,
er, "Tipton" the sound quality was and I also felt a little guilty about
copyright stuff. After all, I'd love for Ritter and others to have the
motivation to continue to put this kind of stuff out. Anyway, to make a
short story long, I was wondering if I could get a few of you to chip in a
couple bucks ($5 max) to send Rick the CD version. Amazon.com has it at
$27.97... not bad, but more than I can afford by myself until my consultancy
position become a real job (hopefully by the end of the month). I'm set up
with PayPal... LMK if you want to contribute and I'll give the details.
Sorry to have to "beg" but I really thought this would be something Rick
would get a lot of pleasure out of...

Take care and have a terrific day...

<< Hi all-

Everyone has at least one "million dollar idea" in their lifetime. Here'smine.
Inspiration came from Jeff Sackmann's "top 30" website.

Can't afford premium prices for "pack fresh" vintage cards? Now you can!

We all want "pack fresh" cards in pristine condition but who can afford them?
Now there is a reasonable alternative for the price-conscious collector.
We at ABC cards have patented a new technology to separate the "pack fresh"
from the "pristine condition". We call them "collector-grade" cards
and are offering these at an unbelievable price of $4.99 per pack for a 12
cards. Where else are you going to find 12 "pack fresh cards" from the 50s
through the 70s for such a low price. These packs are GUARANTEED to be
authentic baseball cards. And you know they are "pack fresh" -- we put them
in our own ABC packs last week! Our ABC packs are GUARANTEED to be unsearched,
collector-grade baseball cards. Players included range from Mickey
Mantle to Marv Throneberry.

And coming soon from ABC cards:
-- Topps Traded: The 1963 series. Thanks to an army of 8 year olds, we cannow
offer you a complete set of all the players who played in 1963 on one team
but eventually played for another. Bonus: There will be randomly selected
cards showing if the player is current "retired".

-- Pre-checked checklists: Don't have time to check off which cards you have?
We've done the work for you. We stock a complete line of team and set
checklists from 1958 through the present.

Fortunately I did not open it. Please beware.

Last night, I went to the phones again. This time I reached Bob
D'Angelo to thank him for the Ernie Harwell book, "My 60 Years in BB"
he sent me a couple of weeks ago. Last Saturday, at Comerica Park,
they arranged a special signing by Ernie of the book. That is the
only thing he would sign. Fortunately I had the book. It was also
Ernie Bobble Head day and I was able to get one.

I went with my buddy Rocky, who a few OBCers have met. The game was
so boring, Detroit vs. Kansas City that we left early and went to my
house to ewatch U of M lose to Notre Dame. I cannot remember ever
voluntarily leaving a game early for no good reason other than
boredom. BB may be losing me as a fan even without a strike.

Hi gang,

Got a nice call from Mike Rich on Tuesday night, as he finally connected with me here at the Tribune after two nights of trying at home (was working at the time -- ah the life of a sports copy editor, late hours and weekends). We had a great conversation, and the only thing that brought it to the close was the Tribune's impending deadline.

We talked bout topics ranging from basements (not a good place to store cards, but a moot point here at 6-inches above sea level Florida), to finds at estate sales, flea markets and card shows -- and some other neat stuff in between.

One inspiration did come out of that chat: since Mike has lists for stuff other than baseball, I decided why not add some football. So since I have a few cards from the early 1970s, I decided to do so. They are not a burning priority, but a fun diversion with football season here. I lived in South Florida during the Miami Dolphins' perfect season, so it is kind of a nostalgic trip for me.

I was glad the timing of sending the Harwell book resulted in an autograph for him. If you are a Tigers/Harwell fan and you would like a book (I have sent a few out but I forget to whom now ...), let me know, I have one left.

Anyway, thanks to Mike for a great phone call! This is one of the perks of OBC -- not one card was exchanged, but a lot of friendship and memories were!

COUNTERFEIT '63 BAZOOKAS SOLD ON EBAY, SHOP AT HOME
An investigation by Sports Collectors Digest indicates hundreds of phony
1963 Bazooka baseball cards have been sold to unsuspecting buyers on eBay
and Shop At Home in recent months. While the counterfeits are not
particularly well-made, they are all the more dangerous because most of
them have been sold in plastic slabs purporting to have been authenticated

very well, but last year topps had a $4/box increase in price, and guess
what... they did it again this year. That means that my cost is now $40
for a box! That means that you guys who I mail them too will be paying
$44-$46 for a box. I'm not sure that you won't be able to do better
on ebay, but we will see. Anyway, all that being said, I'll still buy as
as you guys want, so if you are up for it, let me know. I do need to

but I'm not sure. In any case, let me know!
Thanks, and get back to the vintage stuff! :) Sorry for the interruption.
Usually I put an available list here, but I don't have any left after this

Subject: Tacoma Dome Show
Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 22:35:36 -0700
From: "Dave Fallen"

The Tacoma Dome show is a three times a year local show that bills itself as
"The Pacific Northwest National Sports Card and Memorabilia Show". I used
to chuckle at the concept of a "National" card show that was always in the
Pac NW, but now that THE NATIONAL is permanently East of the Mississippi I
guess our show has as much right to the title "National" as the other one.

Anywho, I went to the show tonight with a friend who got me into baseball collecting
a few years ago. The only other OBC early bird was Big Al. Of course,
Mark Macrae was there and also ex-OBCer Pete Brito who has now turned
dealer scum (actually I think he just works for a dealer). It was good to
see Big Al again and true to form he (1) complained about how hard my want
list is and (2) proceeded to pound my 1961 Post list with 27 (count-em, twenty-seven)
hits, plus he used a 1951 Topps Red Back as an exclamation mark.
It's a good thing my list is not an easy one - Big Al would have buriedme!
Meantime I gave Al 1 (count-em, one) baseball card. Now usually a 28-to-1
return is considered pretty good but I hope Al gets his want list back
up on the Web soon so I have a shot at reversing the trend.

Although the show was typically small, I made some pretty good finds. I picked
up two Seattle Rainiers team photos -- 1941 (Earl Averill's last year in
pro ball) and 1944 (my birth year). Also managed to score two old stripcards
(Tris Speaker and Grover Alexander) and a 1943 M&P Joe DiMaggio. Fun

It kills me that I can't go to Anaheim for The National next year. I hate the
thought of having to go clear across the country to New Jersey, but I don't
want to wait until I'm 70 to go to a West Coast National. Sigh.

Subject: Rick CD Project...
To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: XTrJmx@aol.com

Hi all... Great news! We had ten folks come through for my request for
assistance in helping pay for the Lawrence Ritter CD "The Glory of the Their
Times". Since everyone wanted to send the max I had set, we have enough
extra to get a couple more CDs. One CD I'd like to get him is called
"Diamond Cuts: Take Two" available from the marketplace section on the
incredible site, Elysian Fields Quarterly (Elysian
Fields Quarterly - The Baseball Review). My wife bought me this CD for
Christmas a few years ago and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. There's some great
baseball-themed songs in all varieties of music plus a "straight" reading of
"Casey at the Bat" by Bob Costas and then, on a later track, Garrison
Keillor's hilarious satire of the same, presenting the whole story from the
viewpoint of the Dustburgh (Casey's opponents) fans!

"Diamond Cuts: Turning Two" is one of FIVE CDs put out by the same indie
record label ("Hungry for Music"). Volumes 3 (Triple Play) and 4 (Grand
Slam) are also available at EFQ, while the first (Diamond Cuts: A Compilation
of Baseball Songs and Poetry) and latest CD (Diamond Cuts: The Bottom of the
Fifth) are available on Amazon.com I also just learned on Amazon.com that:

"The collections are inspired by a passion for baseball, music, and helping
others. The proceeds from Diamond Cuts will provide funding for Hungry for
Music, a Washington, DC-based charity. "

I've been having a tough time deciding which other volume to get and then it
dawned on me... why not all of 'em? If there are any of you who wanted
to contribute but felt you were too late or didn't see the original message,
here's your chance! :-) Anyway, even if no one else participates, we'll at
least get a couple for him.

Thanks to all and have a terrific weekend...

Subject: Another idea for Rick... a virtual card show!
To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: XTrJmx@aol.com

Hi all... when I was chatting online the other day with Rob Gioia, he was
mentioning to me how excited he was to be going to his first Fort Washington
show. His enthusiasm mixed with my own recollections of how fun these types
of gathering occured during the same session where I'd read the update on
Rick Redpath. The result of these mixed thoughts was an idea: could we
treat Rick to a "virtual" card show? If someone going to Ft. Washington has
a video camera, wouldn't it be neat to take it around to the different
tables, score some deals, and (in my opinion most important) meet other
OBC'ers? Special messages could be added by the group or individually...

When I mentioned this to Steve Rittenberg, he suggested that this doesn't
necessarily need to be limited to the Fort Washington show... anyone getting
together (or anyone who wants to make their own individual recording for
him!) could do this. When I first joined OBC (ten years ago this week!), one
of the younger members, Ryan (screen name was Teenager, I think...), was
hospitalized for his diabetes. The group passed a baseball around the
country, everyone signing their well-wishes upon it, before it finally made
it's way to Ryan. I thought it was a grand accomplishment and immediately
increased my awareness that this group is about more than ballcards.

Anyway, any other embellishments or revisions on this idea are welcome! Take
care and have a great weekend...

OBCers --
With an Illini and a Bears thumping behind me, I'm going to drown my football woes in cards.  Please do me a favor and request a few of these to lighten my dupes box:
1966:  8, 21, 22, 32, 33, 56, 68, 73, 84, 111, 121, 140, 157, 173, 174, 186, 188, 211, 236
1968:  55, 319, 325, 431
1970:  445
1979:  358
1977 Football:  163, 490
And to get my Bears back on the winning track against Buffalo next week, I need to unload a Bledsoe Rookie Card to a willing taker.  I don't know what it will take to get my beloved Illini a win against Michigan, maybe I'll have to unload an actual Wolverine (or a ground squirrel if I can't find one)...

Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 00:58:03 -0700 From: "Greg Conway" I'm on vacation this week with no major projects or trips to take. So, I decided to do a little baseball card maintenence. I added two sets to binders. I usually do that when the cards needed to complete the set are less then 100. A local card show FINALLY had a dealer with some vintage cards atlow grade prices and I picked up a couple of hundred, dropping my '59 and '61 sets below the mark. I have a separate box that I keep about 2 or 3 hundred of my better cards in. some people would rather look through it then go downstairs and go through tons of binders and boxes. Also, the box fits in my safe. Anyway, this leaves some holes in the binders, 2 to 8 per set plus the cards I'm still I decided to make small index cards for each of the cards I took out ofthe binder and place them in the binder with the card's number and player's name so I'd know where the card was. By doing this I could also check my sets and see if the holes in the binder matched up with my wantlist. Well, as many of you have already guessed, they didn't. More than half of the 23 binders had mistakes. cards I thought I needed, I don't. Cards I thought I had, I didn't. Luckily, all the mistakes that added cards to my list, only added commons. My binders only go up to 1978 and from 1974 up were loaded as full sets. Strangely, two commons from the '77 set turned up missing so I have added that as a new set to complete. You guys that like to complete other peoples sets for them better hop on this easy one! ;~) Also, the '65 set had only nine left. It now has 10 but two, Mantle and E. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, jgreco@us.imshealth.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi all, First off, I'd like to give a quick thank you to Neal Thomas for hitting the very empty first page of the 1963 binder with a pair of league leader cards. THANKS NEAL!! Yesterday was not a very good day for me. In the morning at work, I broke a filling and went into the dentist's office to learn that I now need a root canal to fix the damage. After getting a temporary patch and setting up three hour long appointments, I got a nap. After waking up, I went to my softball game. My team won despite my 0 for 4 effort that ended three of the last four innings. (We had a 14 person lineup, so I ended one inning in which we batted around and scored ten runs). After the game, I had to get to work and didn't hang around. I rounded the corner where my car was parked and discovered it was GONE!! One of my teammates had a cell phone and I called a few places to find out it had not been towed... I still can't believe someone WANTED to steal my car! This isn't even the worst part. Apparently in order to file a s tolen car report, you need a photo ID and a copy of the registration. Well, if I had those things, I wouldn't have to file a report - they're in my car! Fortunately, a teammate has a sister on the Boston police force and they called in a favor so I wouldn't have to drive home and back the next day to get a police report. Today I have to run around getting a duplicate license and a rental so I can make the trip to Ft. Washington, Charlotte and Miami I've been planning for months. So if anyone sees a 1990 Toyota Camry with an OBC hat in the back window, call the local authorities ;-) TAYL, Ken M - BTW, my birthday is tomorrow. Anyone know what I want for a present? ================= Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 03:07:21 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: A child is born From: "rbhankins" I'm pleased to announce that my wonderful bride gave birth today to our second son, Jackson Mitchell Hankins. Date: 30 Sep 2002 07:56:40 -0700 From: "jcollins12" Hi again, Thanks to all of you responded to my price guide question yesterday. In case you were wondering, I did manage to secure a '54 Johnston's Hank Aaron for what I felt was a super deal. Hopefully it will arrive soon. As is usually the case when I stumble onto anything slightly oddball or out of mainstream interest, now that I have got a start to these cards, I am interested in getting a lot more. Could somebody also check and see what the list prices are on a '55 Johnston's Aaron? I remember reading somewhere that the '55 set was even harder to come by, and the Aaron from that set may be worth even more. I have certainly never seen one on ebay, that's for sure. Also, if anybody has any Johnston's Braves cards (1953-1955) possibly for trade, please let me know. I would be very interested, and especially for anything of Spahn, Mathews, or Aaron. ================= Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 20:12:56 EDT Subject: Very OBC friendly dealer To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: jazzgirl1920s@aol.com hi- this is Linda- i would like to recommend dealer John Morrison of Valley Cottage , N.Y. to those in OBC who don't know about him- He is a great dealer who fairly grades cards and has provided me with a LOT of vintage 1950's traders- He has some sales listed on the OBC message board- i know he does shows in the East- either Ft. I bought a 1949 Satchell Paige from dealer Luv2shop_46033@yahoo.com. The
card arrived, I took a quick look, and gave him positive feedback. Then I
realized the color was wrong and the card was slightly larger than a 49B. I
complained to the dealer, who immediately responded that he didn't know, that
it was the only 49B he had, and to please return it for a full refund and
positive feedback. He has emailed me 3 times to be sure everything is ok and
the card is on its way back. His response has been quick and positive. Very
impressive. - Doug
