Linda ================= Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2002 19:33:44 EST Subject: What I did on my Autumn vacation To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, jgreco@us.imshealth.com From: cardclctor@aol.com (This might make up for my recent silence... set aside some time for this one Hi gang, It's been a while since I've had a chance to sit down and type a note to the server. In fact, I haven't had a day off since I got back from my vacation. Details below for the reader with time to kill ;-) Anyway, the trip started out on the wrong foot... actually, it almost didn't start out at all after my car got stolen two days before I was supposed to leave. To make matters worse, my wallet was in the car. I had to cancel my credit cards and EZ pass. The next day, I got a duplicate license and activated a credit card from the 'drawer of inactive accounts'. (I toss most of the cards in there without activating them.) The morning of the trip, I headed down to Enterprise only to find out that there wasn't unlimited mileage outside of New England. Since my trip to Miami was at least 3000 miles, I would therefore have to pay for more than half the trip. I scrambled back to the house and located a Hertz place just down the street and got a 2002 Taurus with just 6600 miles on it (I got a size upgrade and a AAA discount - about the only good luck I've had with cars this month.) This made the trip a lot easier on me, since the A/C and cruise control in my own car don't work. I was thinking about renting a car for the trip, but the unintentional loss of my car gave me no choice. Anyway, Friday afternoon, I set off for my first stop - Ft. Washington. I arrived at Joe Greco's house without too much hassle other than the fact that I now had to wait at all the toll plazas on the way down without my EZ pass. I skipped out on the Friday portion of the show and opted to celebrate my birthday. Despite the use of an entire box of candles (36), I managed to blow them all out in one shot. The next day was the swap session that was detailed by other OBC'ers in attendance, so I'll spare everyone another recount - especially since it now seems so long ago, I've forgotten most of the details. The show itself was pretty good. I picked up some good deals, including a 6% pile from Roger Neufeldt that will eventually see it's way out of here if I ever get around to it. I also started a new set - now before everyone starts e-mailing me for a wantlist, I must warn you: although the set is kinda recent by our standards, it's not too easy to locate any cards from it. I originally purchased a small sample of the cards to give to a friend as gifts, but located a nice sized tipton lot at Steve Brandenberg's table and decided to start the set myself, since it was from the first year I started collecting - 1977. However, the new set is 1977 Topps MEXICAN football. These were issued in two card packs with a nasty looking stick of gum (I bought an unopened box on eBay right after the show), so one card has a slight wax stain and the other has the gum stuck to it - every card is a tipton right outta the pack! Therefore, if anyone has some of these (or previously had no idea what those weird looking football cards with all the Spanish on the back were), I'd be interested in hearing from you. Now maybe those guys who have been hounding me to start a new set will keep quiet Back to the journey south. After leaving PA, my next stop was Charlotte, NC to visit my brother. There wasn't much to note during this part of the trip other than the fact that the local card shop (Smitty's) closed it's doors and there now isn't anything close to a good card shop in town. I have to drive to Rock Hill, SC or hit one of the monthly shows just over the border to look at old cardboard :-( Next up on the tour: Miami, Florida. The drive to my hotel in nearby Ft. Lauderdale was long... 10 hours or so. I must've listened to all the CD's I bought back in Pennsylvania twice over. I checked into the hotel and caught up on some sleep. The next day (Sat.), I met up with an online buddy who collects UV football and he drove me to a show at a local mall. I now realize how good I have it where I am. I saw every old card at the show (about 10 tables, max) in about ten minutes. I did manage to pull a few cards out of the 5/$1 box that were barely worth the price I paid (some early 70's semi-highs and highs), but I was waiting to leave in about a half hour. Fortunately, my friend spent a whole wad of cash and had to be dragged out of there before he spent more. Sunday was the much anticipated highlight to my trip - the New England Patriots vs. the Miami Dolphins football game at Pro Player stadium. I had purchased the expensive club seats ($165 a pop) due to the fact that there was air conditioning. What I didn't realize is that the air conditioning wasn't AT the seats. There was a lounge in back with a refreshment stand and bar that was nice and cool, but the seats themselves were out in the 90+ degree heat. Wearing my long pants wasn't a very good idea - I was dripping wet in about five minutes. I spent most of the second quarter, half-time and the entire fourth quarter in the lounge watching the game on television near the refreshment stand. The Pats level of play didn't make things any easier to bear when I was outside watching. It seemed every time I'd go outside, they'd fumble or throw an interception, so I figured it was much better if I stayed inside anyway. It wasn't worth the 1500 mile drive to see them lose, but the game was a fun experience otherwise. I also got to meet up with my friends from my home town, who I share my season tickets with. They flew down for a bachelor party and to also take in the game, so I was glad I was able to recognize a few faces down there. On the way back home, I stopped in again at my brother's for a night or two. I managed to meet up with an old collecting buddy of mine, who presented me with three boxes of cards he didn't have any use for. There's a few English cigar cards and some 60's/70's commons, but it was mostly a bunch of new junk. My final stop on the trip was scheduled in the site of next year's National Convention - Atlantic City, NJ. I figured I could get in some practice for Vegas next May and also check out the grounds for the Nats while I was at it. I checked into Harrah's and was given a free upgrade to a suite. Now the last time I got an upgrade like this was at Bally's, when they didn't have a room on a non-smoking floor for me. I was given a suite with a Jacuzzi on a smoking floor. This time instead of the hot tub, I got a room with two TV's, a living room, fridge, king size bed, and all the comforts of home except a kitchen. Unfortunately, like the last time, I should've stayed in the room. On the bright side, I think I lost enough money to get a free room again when I head out to Vegas for the long weekend next year. I did get some practice for Vegas by also going the three days and two nights with hardly any sleep. I had to drive this time, so I took a short nap before I had to check out at noon. The drive home from the casino was made at the worst possible time. It was the Friday before the Columbus Day weekend in a driving rainstorm. The traffic in Connecticut was endless. My 6 hour drive was transformed into a 9 hour marathon on just a couple hours rest. I still had a couple days left of vacation, which was spend updating my list, putting away the cards I got along the road and attending the Pats' home game that Sunday - another awful performance that I am sorry I paid to witness. Monday night was the first night back at work - and where the adventure really begins. Usually whenever I take a week's vacation, the store is a mess when I return. However, any time I take two weeks off, the place is like walking onto another planet. I secretly checked the place out earlier in the weekend by stopping in for my paychecks (I was in need of some cash after my performance in AC). The pet food aisle was a disaster area and should've been closed due to the fact that there was nothing for sale in the aisle. Usually this is because the person who normally orders the stuff to put on the shelves (me) is away, so nothing gets ordered (or just barely enough to get by). However, we recently switched over to a computer ordering system that does it all automatically. As each item is scanned, it's taken off the inventory and reordered when another case is needed to replenish the shelves (that's the theory anyway). The beauty of the system is that it saves me 15-20 minutes of ordering my aisle every night. It also adds 30-45 minutes of inventory maintenance to my day, so I get LESS onto the shelves where it will sell... and this is better? Anyway, to make matters worse, the cat food section underwent a major reset. This is when they take all the items out of the spots you've become familiar with and move them around mostly for the sake of moving them and confusing the customers, who can no longer find what they buy every week in the accustomed locations. Whoever did this also added the major inconvenience of omitting an entire section from the reset. You see, every item in the store has a location programmed into the computer which tells you how many cans are on the shelf, price, case quantity, etc. As a result, I had an eight foot section that wasn't getting ordered because none of the items had a shelf location in the computer. This wasted several hours during the next couple weeks as I tried to figure out what went where, what wasn't coming in, what should be coming in, etc... all the while trying to catch up to the stock piling up in the back room. This was only half the problem, however. Recently, my store opened up a Dunkin' Donuts coffee shop inside the store. The Thursday before I returned, security was in the building doing some normal stuff and left the tapes running that night. They caught a couple of my co-workers making coffee and not paying for it and still more smoking cigarettes on the sales floor. In the end, the full time frozen food, dairy and general merchandise clerks were all fired and two part time grocery clerks were suspended/fired. So my last day off was sometime back in mid October. The way things are going, I may challenge Ripken's streak before I get another one. I still haven't gotten to the other storylines running along at this time. The first business day after I got back, I became a homeowner. However, my address isn't changing because I'm not moving. I finally signed the paperwork that officially put me $200,000 in debt to my parents. Coming at a time when I'm also paying for rental cars, car repairs, car towing and such is a case of bad timing, but at least I'm working plenty of hours to pay for it all. :-) The only thing I have to hold off on for the moment is the pool table, cable internet access and new computer I wanted... and I had to cut back on the card buying temporarily. I'll probably break that rule at the Wilmington show tomorrow, but I'll be forced to use restraint... and there's always plastic Remember my car? Well, a week ago I got a letter in the mail saying it had been recovered! The bad news is that I got a letter in the mail saying it had been recovered. I had to get a release from the police department before I could even look at it, never mind move it. In the meantime, I had been borrowing my cousin's car (he's from NY) after I finally returned the rental I used to go to Florida. Last weekend, I had another cousin (from NH) who got tickets to game 6 of the World Series. He let me drive his car that weekend until his return on Monday night. Monday night, I took the car to my bowling league night. When I left the alleys, I discovered that car was gone too!! This was less than three hours before his scheduled return from CA. I learned from my fellow league members that while I had been away on vacation, the owner of the lot across the street from the bowling alley had started towing cars out of there after business hours. So, for the low price of $95, I got my cousin's car back to him in time for him to drive home from the airport that night. I thought this was a rip-off ($75 towing and $20 storage fees, even though he had the car for less than two hours) until I finally got that release for my car from the PD to the tow yard where it was located. That was $80 for the tow and $20 every day it was there. Oh, and it was cash only at both places - there goes the card budget for the Wilmington show this weekend. :-( Back to my car - or should I say what was left of my car. I guess it wasn't as bad as it could've been though. The ignition was broken (I think this may have been the case before it was stolen), the windshield was smashed and the axle was broken. Anything of marginal value was gone, including my wallet (however, some anonymous kind soul mailed my license to me). My warped basketball and cheap softball bat were taken along with the bag of change I kept in the car. The worst part of the damage was that someone had sprayed a fire extinguisher or something all over the interior, covering EVERYTHING in a fine white powder... what a mess! The good news is that my price guns for work were still there (minus a few stickers added to the back of my seats) and what should truly be a collector's item - the four OBC hats I had placed in the back window. I added them there after I went to a local show in September hoping to meet up with some OBC'ers. I didn't see anyone from the group, so I put them in the back window and kept forgetting to get them out. These now have a fine powder all over them. The one on top got the worst of it, so I'm going to bag it up and send it to Grant, who requested that his hat be sent in tipton condition. Right now I'm in the process of filling out all the insurance paperwork and waiting to see if my car is totaled. Originally I was going to get about $600 for repairs, but that was before I knew the axle was broken. Now I have to hold off on all repairs until I get another adjustor to look at it. Anyway, that's about all I have to report for now. Sorry for the recent lack of activity, but if you've read this far (congratulations!) at least you know some of the reasons why. I hope to be back in the driver's seat (literally and figuratively) again real soon. TAYL, Ken M ================= To: Subject: Ken M. I arrived a bit late for me - about five minutes before the gate opened. After managing to steal a parking space right outside of the entrance I made my way in. This year is the first year of my membership in the Greater Boston Sports Collectors Club, which allowed me to skip a very long line and use the member's entrance. Once inside, I start looking around for familiar faces and managed to find one at the front of the line: Steve Rittenberg! Steve waves me on up and allows me to cut a few more dozen people off. Typical OBC moment: I greet Steve and wish him a happy birthday and then he gives ME a pile of cards! A whopping 58 hits to my 1974 football list (including guys like Greene, Marshall and Mercury Morris) which Steve apparently did a tag team assault with Dan Cipra! Also in the box were six 1974 baseball hits (including a Winfield and a Schmidt), two 1970 high numbers and two 1972 high numbers including a Carew!! I'm not even in the show yet and my day is already made! Thanks guys!! One of the problems I have when I go to shows is that I don't focus really well on my wantlist. I'll just wander around and look for anything old and beat up. I was determined to change that this time: one of my lists (1969) is getting very small, so at the first table I went to I focused on some 1969's. After buying some, I put into wander mode. At least I focused on my list for a few minutes. Maybe next time I'll do it for a whole half an hour! As I'm about to leave the table, I get a greeting from behind...from Bob Farrell! Yahoo, he made it! After bumping into Bob at a few tables, I saw that he was an expert on focusing on his wantlist, so I made sure I took copious notes. As the day went on, I did manage to find some bargains...and actually managed to find some hits on my wantlists. Of course I found some other olde tyme junk that I didn't need too - but you can't go wrong finding 1920's strip cards for .25 and .50 cents each...and a Tris Speaker for $3. I had to cut this day short due to a prior engagement and left around 4PM. Steve, who was staying at my place this year, stayed at the show for a while longer. When I came home, Steve was already there...and still giving me cards! A 1972 Clemente, a 1975 Hostess Johnny Bench and a 1974 Fisk and a 1975 FB Roger Staubach!! Thanks again Steve! After being hit by a ton of cardboard bricks it was time for some rest! Saturday: Steve and I get to the show just as it's opening. I did the driving and once again lucked into a spot right across the street - another sign of a good day coming. We get into the hall where Bob Donaldson is right inside. Bob greets me with a couple of 1974 baseball hits - a set which is getting closer every day to extinction. I go straight to the middle of the show, where I again put it into wander mode. First thing I do is bump into Ken Morganti. With his awful car situation recently, Ken vows not to spend any money. Could it be true? Stay tuned...I'll let Ken finish his story :-) Next, forces take me to a binder with some lousy looking T206's. I notice a Willie Keeler with an El Principe De Gales back and start the haggling process. Fortunately for me I don't think the dealer ever looked at the back. I ended up taking a couple of commons to get the total price down, but I got the price where I wanted :-) Then I notice a grouping of OBC hats in the corner. OK: there's Ken, Steve, Bob...AND RICK REDPATH!!! After a shake and a hug, I felt very emotional. Rick looks great! This, without a doubt, was the highlight of my weekend. Hell...this was something I won't ever forget! Rick is doing so well that later on, while Steve and I conspire to find him the last two cards for his 1959 set, we ran into Rick and found out that he already found them! Kudos Mr. Redpath! By this time it was getting late in the morning...and closer to our annual Saturday noon lunch/swap session. We find a table and shortly after, here comes Brett Domue! Glad to see Brett made the trip because we hadn't heard from him in a while. Soon after Brett arrived, in walks Bob Pigeon. Wow...now they're coming out of the woodwork! Then the cards start flying at the table. Mr. Pigeon hands me a 1954 Topps Bobby Young...nice card too! Thanks Bob! After things settle down at the table, Ken and I wander off with our boxes to an open part of the Fez Room with about five feet of space and a wall...just enough to start the First Annual OBC Wilmington Card Flipping contest! Ken and I set up two cards apiece against the wall - first one to knock down all the leaners wins 'em all! This is a fun game, but at first it seemed like both Ken and I were setting up more cards than knocking them down! Then, Ken got help from Duke Sims and started winning. I managed to win one big pile toward the end and then Bob Donaldson comes over and joins in. Bob was a bit rusty, so I lent him some of the cards I had won. What a ploy!! Miraculously, Bob suddenly finds the touch and starts winning everything! At this point Brett comes over and announces that many of his cards are in sleeves. Sorry, not allowed: the improved aerodynamics would be an advantage. The four of us start playing the game where the first leaner takes the pile. Brett is scrambling between throws and games to get his cards out of the penny sleeves! Quite funny! Overall, we must have flipped for a good 30-45 minutes. And yes...we got a lot of looks and comments...some in horror. One guys looks down at us and says "You're going to damage those cards." I look up at him and tell him that the cards were damaged before we began ;-) Sadly, a couple of kids asked us what we were doing. This is definitely a sign that card flipping is becoming a thing of the past. I suggest that we in OBC should do our part to keep flipping alive. When your at a show or another OBC get together, or even at home, I think it's our duty to flip cards. Let me say that this was a blast and look forward to doing it again. The afternoon session was kind of slow for me. At around 3:30 we started to round up who was left to see if dinner was on the agenda. Ken, Brett, Bob P, Steve and I were all felling some hunger pains. On the way out, we made a call to Sean McGowan to see if he wanted to join us (since he's about 10 minutes away). He couldn't, but Ken and Steve needed some binders that Sean had. They would be left outside his house, as Sean wasn't going to be home. I led the way to a Friday's fairly close to Sean place - a four vehicle caravan of OBC'ers! After dinner, I led the way to Route 93 where Brett and Bob headed home. Ken, Steve and I headed to Sean's place for Operation Black Binder. Sean left seemingly dozens of binders outside. Ken and Steve got theirs and we were on our way - Ken toward home and Steve and I toward my In the evening, I got to look through Steve's boxes. I made a dealer scum deal/trade that netted me 10 T218's, a 1968 Pete Rose a 1969 Clemente and a 1969 Ryan! I resisted temptation to start another set from the "box of crap" that Steve got at the National. I counted some non-sports cards for Steve while he was sorting and got an education about many different issues. Well, that's it. I don't know if I've approached Master Rambler Ken with this one, but I gave it the old college try, didn't I? Thanks to everyone who made this another fantastic weekend in Wilmington. Now, I'll likely go into show hibernation until March. If you hear some yelling and screaming coming from the East, it's just me having bargain box withdrawal! Small show, but a couple of dealers that have vintage material, including OBC friendly dealer Mike Sandles. Mike also sets up in the Cincinnati & Kentucky areas, for those who live their, let him know you are in OBC with us and get a slightly better discount, off his already reasonable prices. Mark hit my lists with a couple of items. I was able to introoduce Mark to another collecting buddy of mine, John Sterbenz (who actually has stanards to his cards, so will not be joining OBC). John did finish my 1989 Topps Cap's Crunch set with Puckett, Dawson & McGwire. I love those obscure issues. Mark & I hit 1 dealer where I picked up a few items I had not seen before and/or did not have any of. Mark, actually passed on a 1959 Topps Clemente he needed in Tipton shape for $10. Wanted to save his money for Mike Sandles. As has been previously reported Mike has his cards seperated into 1500 count boxes by his prices. Mark hit the $.05 & $.10 boxes hard and found almost 200 cards. Most of these cards were OBC vintage, including some from the 50s at an average price of $.07. Mark did find a few hits to his lists in the $2 & $3 boxes for some high numbers (1959, 1960 & 1962). Meanwhile, Sandles mentions he has a box for me to look at, that is not on the table (he does this for regulars, even though he has approx. 100 1500 count boxes on the tables, plus display cards). I open the box and in about 3 seconds, say how much for the box. All I noticed at the time, were these were all oversize cards, exhibits, 1971 Topps BB Supers, postacrds and Red Mans, some with tabs. Mike, was not prepared for this and said he would have to look at the box, he had recently bought it and did not know what was in it. Figures somthing good if I want it. He tells me he pulled 4 or 5 cards out from when he handed it to me the first time, but $100 for the box (no further discount). He then tells me that when he looked at it, there was a complete set of 1977? Hall of Fame cards, set of 32. Except for Robin Roberts, they are in real nice shape and the set books for $100 by itself. I got between 35-40 Red Man, about 10 with tabs, some NY Yankee Stadium postcards of Koufax, Jackie Robinson & Lou Gehrig, (no idea as to the year of issue) and a stack of 1971 Topps Supers, including Mays Rose & Jackson, among many others. In the 100 150 count boxes, I find some other stuff that adds up to $50 wihch Mike lets me have for $25. This included a 1962 Topps promotional card of Casey Stengal. I have never seen a promo card that old. Regular front, but the back avertised ordering cards from Topps. Great item. Also, got a Hostess panel I needed, for those that have been keeping up with my horror as to the panels being cut- Next show is December 8, but Mike said he will be clearing out his cards (translation) he will bring monster boxes with a lot of UV in it, but some vintage and sell the whole box for a cheap price. Do not know if I will go for that show. The challenge is in going through his boxes to find the treasures. Remember to send me your Canadian issue wantlists this week in preparation for the Toronto show Nov. 15-17, that Ron Perry, Eek, Carlos Alcazar adn I will be attending. I arrived a little before noon so I headedstraight to "the fez room" to try and find the guys. This year it was madesimple due to the addition of the great looking hats. Thanks Steve & Lynn for your work on getting the hats done. Ken handed me one and I fit right in with the rest of the table. I met Rick & Brett for the first time. Bob Donaldson handed me an envelope with a pair of hi # 72s and a half dozen 66s.Jim Hatch grabs my list and pulls another 6 hits to my list. Brett Domue asks to take a look and the first card he hands me is 1958 #1 Ted Williams.I'm totally blown away. My first card of Ted as a player. Not done yet he finds everything from a 55 Bowman Hodges up to a 77 Ryan and a nice stack in the middle. Steve Rittenberg returns from his wandering and is glad to see me because he's tired of hauling a couple of beanie bears around for the last year he picked up for my wife and daughter. He also hands me a puffy with 4 black beauties including Ryan & Brock a couple of cool grays including a Munson RC and a Jim Rice card from 79. He also gave me a book of Tales from the Red Sox dugout which I've already read halfway through. I pass around my dupes box which is a little help to a few guys but not too much. TheNew England contingent & Steve are some tough lists mainly due to the factthey're all done with regular Topps and most of their wants are pre war. Most of the guys went to flip cards. I've never flipped and decided to talk to Steve while they were tossing cardboard. Everybody then went back out tothe show to look around some more The show wasn't too busy that you couldn't move around and I managed to find some good priced hits to my list. We then went on a leadfooted ride up north to a TGI Fridays to grab dinner. I really enjoyed the dinner conversation as we talked about cards and baseballand then made fun of Brett for busting out his N.Y. Mets MasterCard. In the middle of "Red Sox Nation" you're a brave man Brett. Jim lead Brett & I on another 80 mph run to find Rt. 93 again and we headed south while the rest of the guys went to Seans house. It was a great time hanging with the OBC crew and I looked forward to the next time again soon. Thanks for the cards and the fun times. ================= Date: 04 Nov 2002 07:32:58 -0600 Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Directory Anyone? To: , From: Roger Raum could I get one forewarded? To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: brockhattox@cs.com Many of you recently got a message from Lori Fuhr about her dad's card collection that she wanted to sell. Don Roth of OCT went to see the cards at my request. Here is his report: Brock: You should thank me for I just saved you some money. I just returned from my card assignment inspection. I arrived at 11 AM and met Lori at her Dad's apartment door. Lori is a 20 year old college girl who collects baseball cards and is starting to believe these cards are worth thousands of dollars. Her Dad, Bob, is a 54 year old about to retire who believes his daughter will fetch a fortune for him through these cards. They are all his cards from his childhood days from 1952-61. I started to wonder what brink wall he flipped these cards against when playing those card flipping games back in his youth. The cards were all organized for me to "inspect." As I looked at them I commented that many of these cards are worn and in poor condition. "Those are just the commons, take a look at these in plastic holders, the stars." I was handed a 53 Mantle that I would rate as a very poor condition card but Lori, searching through Beckett's, came up with a good condition. I asked what she felt this card was worth. "Well the book says $2,500 Mint so I would say maybe $1000." I suggested that she would be lucky to get $25 for this card because of the condition. After looking at other cards I finally asked Lori and her Dad what they thought these cards were all worth? "Somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000," Lori stated as her Dad nodded in agreement. I indicated that the commons were probably only worth 10-20 CENTS each, a dollar at the MOST and the stars were worth maybe $10-$50 at the MOST. I stated I hope you get that price for these cards for they will make my cards that much more valuable but it wouldn't surprise me if you only got $500-$1000 for all of them. I suggested that Lori do the following: 1. Take her best conditioned cards to a local card show and ask what the dealers would pay for that card. Multiply that by 4 and maybe that's the value of the card. 2. Post one or two of her better cards on Ebay and see what the collectors will pay for the card. Put a reserve on it to prevent her from losing a good card for peanuts. 3. Go to Ebay and see what other sellers are selling their "vintage" cards for and what the bidding prices are for those cards. 4. Take her better cards to a card show and have them graded. Her Dad seemed to be pissed as he thought he was going to hear big dollars coming in from Atlanta or elsewhere. He actually said, "Well, it looks like we wasted your time and ours and I'm sorry you had to drive in from Lynbrook." I changed the subject and starting asking about other cards trying to point out to Lori that she should pull the stars from her commons boxes. I explained that HOF players are sought after as well as RC. Lori has done a lot of research and had two Beckett's book available. Her perception of card value is way out of line. She read about the card grading etc and stated, "Some of these cards are at least 3-4-5 graded cards from what I can see." I took a look at a few of them and, trying to make her feel good, said that some are pretty good but far from what a buyer would expect from a 4-5 graded card. Note that this grading is from Lori not a certified grader. She was disappointed that I didn't flat out offer to give them $10,000 of my friend Brock's well earned money. The conversation slowly came to a close with Lori and her Dad not feeling good about it all. Her Dad then said, "Well, we don't want to sell to a dealer because they will only give us 1/3 to 1/4 of the book value. We were hoping we could sell them to a buyer over the Internet. We believe they are worth at least the book value." Again, I wished them luck and if they had any questions that they felt I could help them with to feel free to email me and I'll do my best to get them answers. Brock, the MOST I would spend on these cards would be maybe, and just maybe, $500-$1000. Personally, I wouldn't spend over $300. There are a lot of big named stars from the 50's. Fair conditioned cards of Mays, Spahn, Musial, and other HOF players. I'm even stretching it when I say FAIR condition. Most corners rounded, worn badly either on front or back, off center cuts. From what I saw in my 45 minute visit were maybe 5-6 cards of stars in what I would classify as GOOD condition. She had a decent Mays, Musial and Spahn. My recommendation, hold your wallet for a better deal. Joe Sweet would love many of these cards! If I had these cards I would look for upgrades for my That's the story and I hope I didn't disappoint you as I did Lori and Bob, her Dad. Do I receive travel expenses? LOL! It has been fantastic reading recent accounts of his progress! Thanks again to the dozen or so OBCers who came through big-time and made this possible. Now for the question: As I was about to place the order with Amazon for the "The Glory of Their Times" and the Diamond Cuts CDs, I encountered an option on the 2nd to last screen asking me if I wanted to "Share the Love" with any friends. What this amounts to is that if I enter your e-mail address, you will receive a 10% off coupon if you want to purchase the same items I order. If anyone is interested in getting their own copy of this CD, let me know and I'll go ahead and get a coupon forwarded to you. Regular cost of the CD is $27.97, so 10% is actually worthwhile. They explicitely state that "No additional Amazon.com or third-party promotional e-mail will be sent to these addresses as a result of your entering them above." I'll list the exact titles, descriptions, and cost of all the CDs at the bottom of this note. Please drop me a short note if you want me to add you to the "Share the Love" list for the coupon. I'll complete the order tomorrow morning, as I know some of you receive this in digest form. The collections are inspired by a passion for baseball, music, and helping others. The proceeds from Diamond Cuts will provide funding for Hungry for Music, a Washington, DC-based charity. This is another musically diverse compilation featuring 20 songs about our national pastime and includes songs about baseball personalities such as: Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Walter Johnson, Ozzie Smith, Ichiro, Bonehead Merkle, John Rocker, Bill Buckner and more. Songs with the following baseball themes are also included: Negro Leagues, the remembrance of players who played for the love of the game, a songwriter paying tribute to his major league dad, playing ball in the neighborhood, and a washed up player who finds solace in the bottle. About the Artist A few of the many highlights on Diamond Cuts "Bottom of the Fifth" include Sam Bush's swinging tribute to the Wizard of Oz - Ozzie Smith (which will also be featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame video tribute to the newly elected Hall of Famer); a Yiddish version of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" from the award-winning documentary "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg"; a parody of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," but instead of Figaro it's ICHIRO; Tim Wilson's hilarious novelty song about the infamous John Rocker; and Kinky Friedman's touching ballad "Marilyn and Joe. ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: feedback on Mike Wheat? I have never dealt with Mike, but I believe I have heard several OBCers speak highly of him from having dealt with him at shows, and if memory serves, somebody sold him part of their collection at one point in time. Just wonder if anybody has any feedback, good or bad about Mike and his business to share. I was surprised to see what an extensive inventory of pre-war cards he has on ebay right now. There is an especially large lot of 19th century stuff, Old Judges, etc. And the one item I drooled over for awhile, a nice T3 Turkey Red cabinet card of Christy Mathewson. They are not being sold at traditional auction however, he only has a buy-it-now price on everything. (Yes, again) To: jmoidl@pks.org, Hanes@pks.org, committee@pks.org, From: WMDpks@aol.com I may be offline for just a few days, as my IBM NetVista desktop computer is showing signs of imminent death. It randomly reboots itself, or hangs up in mid-critical application, or frequently displays the Windows "Blue Screen of Death." At a minimum, a complete hard drive format and factory image refresh will be needed. This is the second potential major disaster on my machine in the past six months (the unit is 14 months old). So, I've ordered a Dell desktop workstation and monitor for myself, and if this IBM unit is salvageable I will give it to my son and daughter, then I'll replace the hard drive in their current clone machine with a replacement unformatted drive and try my luck at installing Linux. On a completely unrelated topic, I have no idea why I don't get invited to parties anymore. :-) While the five words any IBM employee hates to hear are "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!" I noticed something when looking for a replacement computer. For equivalent-spec'd systems, the IBM employee discount price was about $115 more than the Dell retail price available to the public. Apparently, IBM is still in business and making money, though I can't figure out how. Originally, I bought the IBM because I thought the extra money I was paying would show up in increased reliability. Your mileage may vary, but if you're in the market for a decent laptop or desktop, avoid Big Blue - that's straight from an employee of Big Blue. Wash in Dec From: "obc_spike" A little late in the game on this one, but I returned from a Halloween in New York City just in time to connect with the yearly Wilmington, MA card show at the Shriner's Auditorium and a couple of OBCers besides. After church Sunday morning, I returned home to a phone message from Steve Rittenberg wondering WHERE THE HELL I WAS, DAMNIT! (Heh, just kidding, Steve!). I motored up to Wilmington with $2 in my pocket, brimming with confidence that they'd have an ATM on-site. (I mean, they had one last year, right? Didn't they?) When I arrived, I asked the man at the window for the ATM location and he looked as if I just asked for New Year's tickets to the Rolling Stones. "No ATM on site, sorry." So I called Steve and asked for three dollars to get in (what I would do once I was in was anyone's guess, since I would then have NO money). While I was waiting for Steve to come out, the guy from the counter came out and gave me an admission pass stamped COMPLIMENTARY. Right on the gravy train! To be fair, it WAS 1pm on the last day of the show, so I'm sure they weren't brimming with new admissions. Anyway, I got inside and Steve was excellent enough to cash a check with Kevin Savage to supply me with a modicum of spending mon-ay. We hit a few tables for some $1 50s cards, knocking several off my 54 Bowman list, which hadn't happened in a while. Picked up a couple more hits, including a 1971 OPC Foster RC, and finally closed with several quality 59Ts (including Mathews, a Banks multi-player card, and some others) for 50 cents each. Steve almost made off with a 53 Ditka for the same 50 cents, but his honesty got the better of him. Steve had several cards for me at the show, along with some hits from Bob Donaldson. Thanks guys! Everyone was closing up after that, so we departed for Ken Morganti's house under the agreement that football would be watched and cards would be passed around. We watched the entire late game while thumbing through tons of Ken's boxes and he let me dealer scum a 67 Red Sox Team card from him for $15 and pull a bunch of UV football (expanding my "failed Seahawks quarterbacks" collection) for nothing. Then Steve and cruised back to my new place in Cambridge to look at more cards and the late-late game. Steve traded me several 52T hits (yes!) for a bunch of my 65Ts (for his own collection or others, I'm not sure) and we tracked down a few more hits for other people to help pass the time. I crashed at 12 or so and Steve took off in the morning to see a college friend for breakfast. Speaking of big shows, I'm eyeing the Ft. Washington show next month, which Ken says he's not attending, but I figure at least a few New England OBCers are contemplating. If it's just me, I may try to fly down on a cheap Priceline ticket and hotel, but will consider the drive if someone else wants to join me. Anyone else have that in mind? ================= To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Interesting item on eBay web site item#1578922235: Rare Jim "Catfish" Hunter Baseball Card-NR Date: Thu, 07 Nov 2002 07:56:25 PST From: boreed@hotmail.com I thought this seller was dumb for trying to sell a 50 cent card (at best) for $5 plus $6 for shipping. (THIS IS ME TYPING THIS) Big Al, and Joel have both talked to me in the last 10 days. At 5:20 am October 16th I had a heart attack. Peter Iversen probably summed it up best, "one of the things that has been a secret of your success isthat you have good timing." I was in the emergency room at the hospital when it happened. Doctor made it pretty clear that if I had been anyplace else I would be fertilizer today. Ended up in surgery by 7:00 am. They implanted two stents in the left side of the heart. As soon as I have enough strength built up they will take me back to surgery and do some work on the right side of the heart. This could be as early as next Wed. Doctor had stated that it would probably be 6 weeks, so next Wed. would be pushing it. Have a mini stress test tomorrow that will determine if I'm ready for round2. Spent 4 days in the hospital, a few days laying around here before total boredom set in. All in all, I'm doing really well, spirits are very good. Every day thatI get up and don't see my name in the paper is a good day. Have a Great Doctor.(Denise working 9 years at the hospital helps) she new exactly who to ask for. Plus Joel has a damm good one if I feel I need a second opinion. Work has been real good about the whole thing, "come back when your ready",and we will mail you your full check every two weeks. I have dropped in for an hour or two a couple of times. Try to stay on top of (some) things by e-mail or phone. For those of you that need to know. "smoking" as some of you know I did my share (and a few other persons) of smoking. Doctor would not give me thepatch. He had concerns about the effects on the heart. He said "get a hobby". So I did, started sorting the cards in the basement. Got around 600 football dupes from 1950's 1960's and early 70's. Added a bunch of sets to the wantlist. If you have a football list get it updated and drop me a line and I'll try and hit it. The cigs. Last one I had was October 16 at5:00 am in the hospital parking lot. The first thoughts that probably come to most minds after reading the above, is sorry to hear about your problems. To Steal part of a line that MikeHair used in a conversation with me a few days ago. It's not me you need to be sorry for. Feel sorry for Rick Ellison, I will make it to Vegas 03.John McBride, Mikes friend who played golf with us every year, was all butwritten off as DEAD at the end of May from a heart attack and played Golf Last Sat. Rick is going to get butt whipped this year again, (which is normal) only this time a dead man and one who should be are going to be a part of the beating. Back to the regular scheduled program. From: Dan Austin For the past few years, members from many of the web's top-notch sportscard trading groups (like VCT, OCT, OBC, Trading Bases, CCC, etc.) have gotten together and given up some of their sportscards in order to make a donation to St. Louis Children's Hospital. Our intent has been to lift the spirits of some kids who probably didn't want to be there, while at the same time providing them with some goodies in the hopes of spreading the joy of trading cards. It was all a very simple effort but one that we hoped would add a few smiles to some young faces and provide the children with a little something they may not otherwise have had. The project has been a huge success with great participation across many card groups, and we have collected 10's of thousands of cards during this time along with card supplies, various toys, ball caps, ball gloves, etc. As it so happens, the pediatrician who hands out the cards is a baseball card fan as well and has generously agreed to head up the effort again this year. From Dr. Mark Manary: "I am a pediatrician in the St. Louis Children's Hospital emergency room. Last Christmas we had something special to give our young visitors on the days around Christmas. There were some donated baseball cards from a trading card group, I was told. Neatly boxed, we offered them to boys and girls of school age. The response was magnificent. Squeals of delight as they recognized current and recent Cardinals (St. Louis is a baseball town). Whether the trip to the ER was for something simple like stitches or something serious like a systemic infection, the cards did bring joy to these young hearts. For our very young visitors another group donated stuffed animals, so it was nice to have the cards to offer the older kids. It was a great way to bring a some cheer at Christmas time, a superb service project. I would be eager to see baseball card collectors do it again. Members could send me their donated cards and I would package them in envelopes and distribute them at Christmas at the hospital to our young This is a great opportunity to spread some good cheer and to clear out some extra cards at the same time. Got a ton of dupes you don't know what to do with? Send em! New cards? Old Cards? Football? Basketball? Baseball? Hockey? NASCAR? Send em! Whatever you have to send would be great. Since this will be targeted at kids in the St. Louis area, Cardinals/Rams cards, or cards of Cards stars from the past or present would probably be especially prized. A Mark McGwire, Scott Rolen or Albert Pujols card here and there would probably make some kid's week. But, whether you are simply clearing out some dupes or unwanted cards, or selecting a few "treasures" from your collection, please know that any effort on your part will be greatly appreciated by these children. In the past, various trading card organizations have spearheaded this effort, but I believe it has grown well beyond any single group. Its a powerful effort of good will that we all can participate in. Dr. Manary again has graciously offered to be the point of contact for the donations this year. You can send donations of all shapes and sizes to him at the following address: "Cards for Kids" c/o Dr. Mark Manary 7435 Flora Avenue St. Louis. MO 63143 Mark notes that "It would be great to receive tons of cards (of all kinds)", so fire away! Pass the word to all your collecting buddies! Feel free to distribute this to anyone you think might be interested. Thanks for your support! Thanks for reading to the end, and may God bless you and yours during this upcoming holiday season. - Dan Austin ================= To: "Ramblings" Subject: Availables: 1980 Topps Date: Fri, 8 Nov 2002 22:19:52 -0500 From: "Steve Rittenberg" Anyone want to start 1980 Topps (or build a second or third set)? Al, baby, I'm still here, but thanks for thinking of me. Here we go....what would a trip to Paradise be without a little disaster along the way. I left on a beautiful, clear, but cold day...bright skies...good start. I gazed upward, looking for that proverbial black cloud...none to be seen. As I prepared to board the second ferry which would bring me within 30 miles of beautiful downtown Powell River (atlas handy?), the old Bronco barely sputtered into life, and I only barely managed to crawl on board. Oh well, the old girl can rest for an hour, and she'll wake up just fine, she wouldn't abandon me out here, would she? (At this point, I looked skyward again, but it was dark..black cloud may have moved in, but couldn't tell.) Got to the terminal, turned the key, and turned the key, and turned the key...well, you get the idea. Got pushed off the ferry by a service truck. Of course we are out of cell phone coverage, so I had to just about sell my soul to use the phone at the ferry terminal. Being a Sunday at 7:00 pm, everything is about closed up. Find a mechanic open for business at noon any weekend day and you are doing okay. Eventually get a tow outfit...no sir, you are not covered for a tow, as the registration is in your wife's name. A 30 mile tow and I'm not covered?????? Hold on says I, she's here with me but it's so stinking cold I've arranged for a friend to take her to town, and I will wait with the truck. Oh, okay they said, and sent a wrecker. I was able to catch up with my ex brother-in-law, and luckily we are still on very good terms. Even luckier that he has a pickup truck, because I had everything from sliding glass doors to cupboards in the Bronco. He picked me up, we escorted the truck to HIS mechanic's place, and transferred all the gear. He then dropped me in Powell River at my sister-in-law's (his ex) where I stayed the night and got in my share of complaining. And I'm still not on Savary yet. Monday--Hooked up with the builder (not the one who gave Jen the hard time), as he had come to town the day before to get drunk. Bought him breakfast and he began to look almost human, and he got us to Lund, a small fishing village at the end of the world, where we caught the water taxi to Slavery Island. Very cool thing happened there, got to watch an octopus play under the wharf for about 10 minutes. Never seen one before that wasn't in a tank or a stew pot. Things are looking better. Got to the island, mill is on site, and there is a ton of the most beautiful looking lumber I have ever seen. Better than we can buy, because we export all our good stuff to the U.S. and Japan....the crap stays here. Immediately thanked my neighbour for his help in intervening on Jen's behalf last week. Really interesting, because he works for the goof who gave her the problem. Got invited to stay for dinner with them...things are still looking up. Tuesday--after numerous wanna-be intimidating drive-bys (not the shooting type), the builder in question decides to be brave enough to stop and come into the worksite. I was very calm, very fair, and very firm, and asked him politely to NEVER do that to anyone in my family again, except for me. End result is that he may have a broken pinky on his left hand, at the very least a bad sprain. Never even came close to killing him, and I admit a few days ago I could have. Talked to my brother-in-law, who had good news and bad news about the truck. The mechanic came out Monday morning, turned the key, and it fired up fine. He moved it into the shop, and hadn't been able to start it since. Fast forward to the rest of the week--the walls are up, doofus hasn't been back, I didn't bleed too much, and we have enough nice lumber to go into the business. My back is killing me though. By Thursday, I had the truck report...mechanic had to replace a sensor switch, apparently the engine didn't know if it was starting hot or cold. What a stupid engine. Anyways, there went $250 that I hadn't planned on unloading this trip. But at least it was running again, and it did get me home nicely. Oh yeah...that black cloud? Jenny left this morning to oversee the next part of the construction...rafters, roof, window placement, etc. Moments after she left, I headed for the computer...guess she was lightening the load and cleaning out her purse, and there was a pile of relatively unimportant things left here at the computer desk like her credit cards, Chevron, AAA membership card, driver's licence, etc. Well, she left here with a pile of MY cash, so I know she's got enough to buy off any Mountie who might have the misfortune of pulling her over. I'm not sure how far she's going to get with the cards she did take, like Sweet 16 (she wishes), Sears etc. One day this will all be over. ================= To: "OBC Ramblings" Subject: Goudey Ruth on ebay Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 15:18:49 -0800 From: "John Collins" Check out this "original" '33 Goudey Ruth on ebay. It is natural to combine that with an interest in vintage baseball. Last year I produced a CD containing 12 baseball games from 1934 to 1964, and 31 radio programs with a baseball theme, programs like Fibber McGee andMolly, Gunsmoke, and Ozzie and Harriett -- about 42 hours of entertainmentin all. I thought this was a one-shot deal! Since then I have acquired another 10 baseball games, and a dozen very charming 15 minute Dizzy Dean radio shows from 1948. A complete list of programs (both last year's and this year's) can be seen at http://home.attbi.com/~dfallen/OBC_Christmas.htm I know there are a few of you that would like to have these programs, including some new OBC members who weren't here for last year's offer. So once again I make the offer: any OBC member that wants a copy of the CD, all you have to do is ask. With your request PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CURRENT MAILINGADDRESS as this saves me some time. This year's CD will contain all of the programs from last year as well as all of the new ones. As before, all of the files will be in MP3 format. I will not include a MP3 player on the CD this year. Almost everyone alreadyhas a MP3 player installed already - to find out, just double-click on thefile and it should open and play. If you need help, I offer tech support as exactly the same price as I charge for the CD. I have re-encoded all of the MP3 files to a consistant bitrate of 32 kbits and sampling rate of 44,100kHz. What this means is that if you own a portable CD player that supports MP3 files, these programs should work on them. PLEASE NOTE these files will NOT play on an ordinary audio CD player. There are five options for listening to these files: 1. Play them on your computer. 2. Play them on a CD player that supports the MP3 format. 3. Download the files to a portable MP3 device, such as the Rio. 4. Many DVD players will also play MP3 files. 5. Convert the MP3 files to WAV files and burn them onto CDs. Then you can play them on an ordinary audio CD player. Bear in mind, however, that there is nearly 70 hours of audio here which is going to take a whole lot of CDs if you want to do it this way. This is a no-strings attached offer - my way of wishing one and all a very happy holiday season. -Dave Fallen ================= To: Subject: MORE AVAILABLES Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 13:15:51 -0600 From: "David Kolenda" If anyone needs 1974 topps team cards, the ones with the red border, (73 had blue border) let me know. I did manage to bring Margaret chocolates from Belgium and I even managed to consume some great Belgium beer while on my trip to Antwerp! I had little time for anything else and will probably be traveling a lot for the foreseeable future. With Homeland Security on the fast track my position with US Customs is up in the air and I am hoping for an early retirement. They run it 4 times a year and most of the time they split the building with a coin show. The November show features Tony LaRussa's Animal Relief Fund Autoghaph sessions. We saw "ButterBean" the pro fighter/wrestler and Megan Quan, local Olympic Champ. Tony was signing and a couple M's. We got the M's to sign a ball each. Al Kaline was not around and no info was given why. OBC friendly dealer Mark Macrae was there with his usual assortment of old cards and neat stuff. He did bring a bunch of Salada coins and a couple Junket boxes with him so if you are working that set, he has some fair prices. Former OBCer Shawn Draper was there but only had UV so I passed on his table. I ran into a dealer that Mike Hair recommended named Dave Trimble from Salt Lake City. Good selection and fair prices. When I mentioned Mike and OBC, we hit it off and talked for a while. Like always, knowing Mike didn't mean SH** on a discount. Truthfully, he already had knocked of a good chunk of the price. Notice that on the back, the area where the lettering "Topps Baseball" is supposed to be has been scratched out. But even more glaring, the areas on the bottom left and right sides of the back, which are supposed to say "T.C.G." and "Printed in USA" are not scratched out and do not have this printing. I plan on putting last year's files on one CD and this years files on another, just to keep things simple for those who listened to all of last year's CD and are more interested in the updates. I think I'll label them Volume 1 and Volume 2. Even if you gotlast year's CD, I'll send both volumes to you because last year's CD was missing the ending to the Met's inaugural game and that missing piece has been added to Volume 1. If you missed my original offer and are not sure what I'm talking about, check http://home.attbi.com/~dfallen/OBC_Christmas.htm An no, it's not too late to add your name to the list. -Dave Fallen ================= To: Subject: Green Tint Ruth?Yes it is. To: OBC-Ramblings@Yahoogroups.com From: jceru8600@aol.com Hello out there in cardboard land, OK, here goes. I need some help in the oddball, variation category of collecting. I've decided to go after the Post cards from the early 60's. Now the 62 and 63 sets are pretty straightforward, except maybe some confusion with 63 Jello, but that is minor in comparison to the 61 set. OK, here is the question. Is there an easy way to distinguish between Box and company versions (This really only matters in a handful of cards, Wynn, Snider, Thomas, McCovey, Spahn, ). There are some cards where the box/company is distinguishable by the fact that they had two different teams listed like Conley who has a card with both Redsox and Phillies. So besides getting a caliper to figure out thickness, is there an easier way or bottom line should I just forget about the distinction (which I'm more inclined to do). Any comments or help appreciated in advance. Thanks, Joe Cerullo ================= Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 09:17:55 EST Subject: Thome To: OBC-Ramblings@Yahoogroups.com From: malsman250@cs.com As a Tribe fan, I am a big Jim Thome admirer, he has been a great player and a class act for years. His season in 2002 was phenomenal, he hit 52 homers with absolutely no protection behind him in the lineup. But if the Phils are willing to give him $15 million a year for six years, they're nuts. He's 32 years old. He has a bad back, and has sat out many games. Last year for the Tribe, he was the DH in a number of games because he couldn't play in the field. That will be a little tough in the NL. He is a big, bulky, slow-moving player - and it seems to me that those kind of guys often "hit the wall" real fast in their early to mid-30s. When I think about Thome in a Phillies jersey, somehow I keep having visions of Greg Luzinski in his later years. I looked up similar players on Baseball Reference - not too many of this type of slugger were really productive after 35. (I know, I know, there are exceptions.....) This signing thing will be done in the next couple days, and I don't know which way to root. If the Tribe keeps him, they could be saddled with baseball's biggest white elephant in about 3 years. ================= Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 23:52:01 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Proceedure From: "alcattle" Slow news day for us non football followers. 1) I updated the wantlist. Date: Tue, 26 Nov 2002 22:23:54 -0800 From: "Brian Lindholme" I was at lunch with the plant manager for my company today, and strangely the subject turned to baseball...and cards ! Seems there was once a lady who worked for him (before I started working there) named Pepitone, and yes...she was related to baseball star Joe Pepitone. Norm casually mentioned to her that Joe was his favorite player during the 60's and maybe she might be able to get an autograph for him. Apparently, that never happened.( Maybe that's why she doesn't work for us anymore...hmmm...) Sounds like it could be OBC to the rescue once again !!! Does anyone out there have an autographed piece that that would like to trade? Alternatively, I'd consider buying one from anyone with a trusted source...there's nothing around here, and eBay may or may not provide a good solution. It's almost more about the story than anything else. The provenance of the autograph would be something that Norm would talk about forever. I did mention that Joe had breakfast at the table acroos from me during one of my trips to Cooperstown. He was close enough that I could hear him entertaining his guest ( appeared to be a reporter) with some old stories. I never got his autograph, and now I sure wish that I had... Okay, and here's another request...I thought that I might be able to just pass along an old baseball card of Joe, but I don't have one that doesn't gointo a set...Another chance for an OBC hero. A card with Joe in Yankee uniform would go along way with my pal Norm ( older the card the better...) Thanks to the greatest group on Earth or any other planet !! PS-I did bid on a Pepitone auto 8x10 on eBay just now...but ya never know if I'll get it. I'd much rather trade for it if possible, or even buy it from you or your local dealers. ================= Date: Wed, 27 Nov 2002 09:20:57 EST Subject: Westchester To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: friar4@aol.com Checking my calendar and the Westchester card show popped up for this Saturday - 11/30. There's a pattern here, isn't there? I'm leaning towards the end panels. Its the only way for me to collect this set. Right now on ebay there is a Cy Young T202 card available. The whole card is there, but you'd have to tape it back together. I already have a few of the T202 end panels and a couple from the other sets. Anyone have some extras? Any thoughts about how stupid these projects are? Oh - also started a Golden Press set after Ken gave me half of it at his house in November. Now I can send my customary 3 MB notes out a lot faster ;-) This all came about as the result of my drive home from the weekly game of pickup basketball last Wed. night. Over the radio, I heard an ad for high speed internet with free installation, a free cable modem, plus the first month free. How can you beat a deal like that? I called up the cable company to make sure I wasn't hearing things and was assured that the deal was legit, although it was to expire either that day or the next one (timing is everything). I set up a service visit for the following Tuesday for sometime between 11 and 1. At exactly noon, the service tech rang the bell. I showed him the cable jack where I was going to hook up the computer. He did something out on the pole for a couple minutes, then returned inside with my modem, plugged it into the wall and put another plug into the modem to power it up. He had to run out to the truck to get me the CD to install it into my system and made a phone call to report the modem installation back to AT+T. He was done in less than 15 minutes. I'm glad there isn't going to be a $90 installation fee attached to that! Now all I had to do was hook up the ethernet cable to my computer and surf away. One problem... my computer didn't have the ethernet jack on it like I thought it did. (C'mon, it's from 1995 and everything!) So off I go to Radio Shack, Best Buy, Staples, Circuit City, and possibly a couple other places looking for some kind of cable or port or converter thingie (being the technical guru that I am). I found out that not only do most of these places not carry what I'm looking for, but they don't have any Mac compatible anything for sale. A helpful clerk at Circuit City directed me to an Apple outlet at a mall just a short half hour drive away and I proceeded hastily to a place where I could mention the word Macintosh and not get a funny look like I was speaking Martian. I ask if there's anything I can get that will let me hook up my prehistoric glorified adding machine to my new cable hookup. I got a look like I was speaking Martian (then probably a few muffled snickers that I didn't notice.) Long story short (as if that's gonna happen now), I was forced to buy a new computer. I was going to have to purchase one eventually, since the machine I had used a whopping 80 MHz processor. I figured hooking it up to the cable connection was akin to pouring Niagara Falls into a funnel. Since I was in the Mac store, I decided that getting a new Mac compatible laptop would be ideal, since I could transfer all my old AOL files etc. over to the new computer. Plus if I got a laptop, I could take the whole machine with me when I traveled instead of transferring it over to my even slower Powerbook. So for about the cost of a low grade 52 Mantle, I'm now the proud owner of a brand new iBook. Now I'm in the market for a SCSI/USB converter cable so I can transfer all my old files over to the new laptop. Using my vast computer knowledge, I will probably spend several hundred dollars on useless cables before I find something that To offset the cost of the cable hookup, I will soon eliminate my second phone line. I have also changed my AOL plan to BYOA, saving a couple more bucks from the regular unlimited monthly rate. So anyone in town (or out of town) that wishes to give me a ring, must now do so at my original phone number: 617-389-3683. I will probably also start using AIM a lot more, but since the cable connection is always on, I might appear to be online when I'm actually sound asleep. (Not much different from what it was previously now that I think of it.) I'll try to leave an away message now that I have a version of AOL that supports it. Now I just have to get used to typing on the smaller keyboard and using the trackpad instead of a mouse. This is even more difficult when I have the laptop set up on the same desk as the old computer. (I just moved the keyboard out of the way, but the mouse is still there in case I want to start up the old machine and get into all my files.) Well, I'm going to play with my new toy, since I'm still not sure of all the things I can do with it yet. I can play DVD's on it (if I had any) or music CD's supposedly. Maybe I'll just surf around eBay and look for cards I can't buy because I bought this machine. Oh well, TAYL, Ken M
