Arrived about ½ hour late due to some questionable directions from Yahoo. I wonder if they've hired Saint Al? Anyway Dave was nice enough to provide the lodging while I provided the transportation. Having somebody else to talk to makes the drive a whole lot quicker. We talked about family, baseball, cards and other stuff. He also bought me a card at the end of the show after I had run out of money, a 1954 Johnston Cookies card of Ben Johnson. Ben’s daughter Cindy sang at my wedding and is married to my cousin. Got to the show about 11:00 and ran into Steve Rittenberg who handed over an envelope. Inside were all kind of goodies like some “traded” Dean Chances and 20+ hits to the Kellogg sets including 6 of the last 8 1971 cards I needed. (Anyone have an extra 16[Willie Davis] or 37[Sam McDowell]?) Also inside was ten football cards including a ‘71 O.J., and ’70 Namath, and the final card from 1976, the AFC Championship Game. Then later during the show he buys me the last 1974 I needed (Roger Staubach) and the last three from 1977. Since Steve knocked off three football sets I decided to start a new one so 1960 is now on the want list. During the lunch time swap session I got to meet Bob Corvello, Richard Kimball (and Mrs. Kimball) and Mac Wubben, for the first time. Steve, Dave, Ken Morganti, and Andy Cook were also there. Howard Morgan didn’t make his appearance until just before the show closed Richard got the new 1960 football set started with 3 hits, Andy Cook finally found someone to take his Wonder Bread football cards off his hands so those sets have been added as well, and Ken added some baseball hits with a couple of Kelloggs, a Curt Simmons from 1956, and a cool looking OBC hat. I also picked up some great deals from my favorite dealer scum. Steve sets me up with a high number 53, two high number 62’s, a 55 Eddie Matthews, Yogi and Brooks from 1958 along with numerous freebies. Being between jobs I didn’t have a lot of money to spend but just meeting up with other OBCer’s makes the trip worth it. My best purchase was a ’58 Williams All Star and a ’55 Kaline for twenty bucks. I’d like to thank everybody who gave me cards and especially roomie Dave for putting me up for the night. I hope to find a job soon so I can start saving up for Atlantic City next year. Does anybody know the dates of the 2003 National? For making it all the way to the end you now have a chance of a couple of Tipton 64 high numbers I picked up. Numbers 559 (Dick Phillips) and 583 (Tito Francona) are available FCFS. Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 11:10:50 +0100 From: "Glenn Codere" Hi folks! This is a combination "Thanks" and "Ramble" post. Maureen and I returned home last night after our 2 week excursion to sunny Arizona. The highlight of the vacation was, of course, seeing my Dad and spending a lot of time with him - for the first time in over 2 years. He's really not in the best of health (heart, balance, and back problems), and our get together seemed to give him a much needed boost. He's a tough old coot, and hopefully he'll keep kicking for a little while yet. We'll be hoping to tack on a trip down to see him again should we make it out to Vegas '03. As far as cardboard collectibles are concerned, it was a particularly good fortnight. If you remember, Steve Rittenberg had agreed to be my designated shopper at this year's National and had also been kind enough to take delivery of a few Ebay items for me, and had sent a whole bunch of stuff to my Dad's place ahead of me. Included in this haul was: 3 x 1952 Tigers 3 x '53B B&W Tigers A 1953T Gerry Priddy (from my Top 10 list) A 1969 Baseball Centennial coin of Willie Horton 4 x 1969T Deckles (Rose, Mays, Gibson & Foy) - SET COMPLETED! Tigers scorebooks from 1962, 1968, and 1969 A 1966 Tigers Yearbook A BUNCH of 1964T Giants (there had also been a lot of these sent from an Ebay dealer straight to my Dad's, so I'm off to a damn fine start on this Fellow Tigers fan Mike Rich had also taken the time to send me a "Welcome Back to the States" package which included: A 1953T Gerry Priddy (I've got a pair of these now!) A '51B Bob Cain A '52B Ted Gray A '61F Tommy Bridges A '67 Bird Bombers (Boog & Blef) 3 x 1968s (F Robby, Banks, & Lolich) A '77T Brock 3 1976Ts - Guidry, Brock, Reggie - SET COMPLETED! 23 assorted 80s/90s Fleer, Topps & Donruss cards and oddballs A pair of 1971T coins An auto'd 5x7 of Jim Northrup 7 x 1964T Giants A '71T Super Al Kaline (another Top 10 card off the list!) 8 autographed Tigers cards including Hiller(2), Matchick, Stanley, Horton, Price, Rozema, and Garbey!! Amazing stuff!!! Thanks so much to both of you for adding so much to my holiday experience. It was just like Christmas had come early! On Friday evening, we went along to the DBacks/Rockies game. We had been hoping to see Randy Johnson pitching and, perhaps, the Dbacks clinch the NL West but alas thanks to their crappy play in the week leading up to this game, we saw neither. Still, it was great to get along to a major league game again! On Saturday, we took the time to call in on a local card show, where I was surprised to find that among the very few tables that were there 2 of them had older stuff in OBC condition...and price range! My haul here 4 x '33 Goudeys (Total cost $7) 3 x '61F (Newhouser, Cochrane, Jennings - all absolute mint condition) 4 x '60-'63 Post/Jell-O Tigers Autographed 1965Ts of Harvey Kuenn and Bill Freehan A 1960 Aparicio AS 15 x 1964Ts 28 x 1965Ts A 1966 Aaron ($3) A 1966 Koufax ($2.50) 9 other 1966Ts A '68 Kaline ($2) A '70 F Robinson ($2) A '69 Aaron ($3) A '72 Gil Hodges 5 'x 75Ts incl Garvey, Seaver, Ryan HL, Fisk, and Fingers (ranging from $1 to $3) 11 assorted Detroit Lions cards from the 60's/70s About 60 Tigers "unmentionables" A few of those cards I already had, but since the prices were so good, I knew someone could use 'em! I'll be checking a few wantlists for needy souls later this week. Finally, as a follow-up to my post of a few weeks back, I called the journalist who had contacted me asking for some help in researching his book about the '51 Giants/Bobby Thomson/Ralph Branca. It turns out that he's the same guy who "broke" the news last year about the Giants stealing signs. We had a great talk, and he's already used much of what I had sent him to help to illustrate the sort of background that Thomson had come from. The book will most likely be published prior to the 2004 season. So, all in all, a terrific 2 weeks of sun, family, good food, and cardboard. Roll on Vegas '03!!! I am probably one of the less active Ebay bidders in the group. My rating is only around 50. I have won a few items lately that OBC has not been able to provide lots of help with, with a few ntable exceptions, Coke Caps and Slurpee BB Cups. Tough but fun items to find. OBC has some grat characteristics. Obviously our support of each other during tough times (Rick Redpath is only 1 example) ranks up there as our most significant characteristic. A more humerous one is that if someone's list is to hard to hit, we "make" them start more sets. I know Brock has branched off into inserts, Post and other sets since joining OBC. Erik Greenwood has caused me to start 1977 Twinkies, by sending me 1/2 a set to start. This was 1 of the feew 1948-80 national sets, that I had never started. I have a complete set of the 1977 Hostess panels, which would be similar cards. This does not normally stop me. I am working on replacing my 1975 Topps regular issue, have the 1975 Topps mini set and am very close on the 1975 OPC BB. All 3 sets are essentially the same. Moral of the story, are wantlists never get smaller, they just change. We occassionally make jokes about snail mail, especially sending or receiving from Canada. Wellon June 3, I mailed a SCP to Lynn Miller of a 1970 Milton Bradley Hammer. Lynn and I had E-mailed about it a few times, and I had even called Lynn in the Phillipines. We knew that I had sent it to his old address, not his new address for regular envelopes. I had done this with another envelope as well, but Lynn got that one (fortunately). Well Lynn has never received the envelope. On Monday, I received the envelope (with side slit open) back saying that the addressee had moved. It took from June 3 to September 30, but I got it back. Now even though the envelope was slit, my letter and believe it or not the Aaron were still inside. I actually called Lynn on the phone again to tell him. I am thankful rates have come down that for a couple of $ I can chat with a great guy. I have the correct address and will be able to send it to the correct address this time. We will see how long it takes. I hope others in the group appreciate the leads to dealers or other traders that are periodically posted on the group servers. I have had some unbelievable packages from OBC, which I teasure, but have also had some excellent success in trading outside the group this year. I swapped some old FB and the last of my 1951 Topps Ringside dupes to Alex Phillips from Canada (alexphillips@sympatico.ca) and received back some marvelous hockey, including 3 prewar, 1 of which was an Ice King plus a 1965 OPC BB Joe Morgan RC. Great guy to trade Other recent traders, include Vaughan Kastor (OCT or VCT?), John Fulgaro, who has published a book on sports logos and has one of the best collections of logos and stickers I have ever heard of. When trading with non-OBCers, I always refer them to our website and urge them to check us out. I feel like I am an OBC evangelist (LOL). Went to a couple of sporting events last week. Red Wings exhibition game Friday nite. Got there 7 minutes into the game and we were already ahead 3-0. Won the game 8-2 agaisnt the Dallas Stars. On Sunday went to the Lions game and saw the Lions upset the Saints. Anyone betting on the Lions to win had to have made a fortune. Never really thought we would win until the final few seconds. First win for the Lions at Ford Field and I saw it. I hope it is not their final win. Tigers fire Luis Pujols (who?) their manager. How can an interim manager, hired after the season started, lose 100 games. Granted he was hired only 6 games into the season, but still. The Tigers, the winningest franchise of the 1980s, is a laughinstock. Have not had a winning season in about a decade. We were a great BB town. Now nobody cares. I actually went to a game a few weeks ago and left after 5 innings due to boredom. We had already gotten our hit by then, so the possibility of a no-hitter against us was gone. If anyone had told me I would leave a game invloving the Tigers early due to boredom even a year ago, I would have thought they were nuts. Just not as much as a fan asa I used to be. I think more than raising money for our site, it allows us to find out if anyone is no longer interested in being in the group. I E-mailed Sam Saleta and it bounnced back as a wrong E-mail. Sam last updated his OBC page last year. Anyone know what is going on? We have others we no longer hear from as well. I am not suggesting we all need to be constantly active. OCT has a rule about trading on a regular basis. I was in their group and thrown out for not being active enough (translation not being recognized for sending out enough packages). In OBC I think I send out at least an average number if not an above average number of packages. I am more concerned to what happened to the guys. As many know I have had some health issues, but they pale in comparison to someone like Rick Redpath or even the scare St. Al gave us last year. So it is quite possible something happened to Sam Saleta and others in the group. Subject: Variation info wanted
From: "mikesportsfan"

FOr those that have already read the thanks post, I am working on the
1971 Kellogg's BB set variations. The set contains numerous
variations in stats, logo's, etc. It also has a difference in teh
copyright. The copyright comes with or without 1970 in it I had
thought possibly that the stat variations might follow teh same
trait. That is that all of the "A" stat variations would be on the
copyright with 1970 and all of the "B" variations would be on
copyright without 1970. Unfortunately, I have at least a few
variations where they both came with 1970 in the copyright.

The question therefore, becomes, did all of the known variations come
with and without the 1970 in the copyright? There are at least 25
known variations, besides the copyright variations. This means there
might be over 200 possible cards to complete the set. I believe I
now have 102, so am barely 1/2 way there. If anyone knows more about
the possible variations I would appreciate learning about them. If
anyone has any extras in the set, I would appreciate acquiring them,
especially without the 1970 in the copyright.

A similar quest is being started on the 1962 Salada coins. The low
number (1-180) backs come in 180 or 200 versions. I am no where
close to completing the set either way (need almost 80), but will be
going after both versions. That set also had variations (teams,
positions, etc.) DOes anyone know if these came with both backs?

Angels and Braves. What a game last night...Angels 9 Yankees 6! That's
the first time I've seen the Angels all year. The best sign I saw all
night was "half the payroll, twice the heart". Love it! That about
summed up the game I watched :) I like the type of baseball the Angels
play. Just don't know enough about their pitching. BTW...I've decided
this year to use a new method for watching all the playoffs and World
Series games. Turn the TV on, but turn the sound off. It is a great way
to relax and watch the game. No biases from all the half-brained
announcers. Also don't have to hear all the commercials and other
garbage. You really get a chance to analyse the game yourself and see it
from a watching only prespective, which increases your senses as to what
is really transpiring in the game. One of the first things I noticed
was that when the camera scans to all the different players, managers,
etc., I was able to feel the emotions of the game more stronly than if
the sound was on. Usually when the camera scans players and the sound is
on, all you hear are negative comments from the the pin-headed announcers
who are tying to over analyse the game based on headlines they read the
night before. The best analyses using my new method is the game between
pitcher/catcher/batter. *You* predict the pitch, and *you* predict if the
batter might be swinging/taking. That's the heart of the game! Beats the
heck out of listening to all the dribble coming out of the announcers
mouths. Pure baseball at its best. I love October! So why don't you
become the announcer/analyser/expert...because chances are...you could do
it twice as well as most of the bone-heads announcing the games right
now :) Just try it for one game!

PS...thanks for all the replies re: reprints!

Well, I went to the White PLains show today, with my son and had a great day.
I took my son Robbie to his first card show, and got was it great. I rember
when i was 7 my dad took me to my first show, and now i was doing it with my
son How perfect was it? My sonn loved it he wa slooking at everything and was
great and didnt ask for anything until we stopped to buy. I went to go just
to fill my trader box, , but as usual i found 2 cards i couldnt pass up on. I
picked up a 63topps Snider for $7.00, and a 1933 Goudey Dizzy Dean card which
was trimmed for $20.00 2 good buys i think.
Now To one of the dealers there. Jimmy Cordascia who was there at the
last White PLains show and took care of all the OBCers, was there today, and
i picked aton of traders and he knocked off $15.00 from my bill. Then he
asked me if my son was collecting yet, and i told him i am trying to get him
started, and he handed my son a Shoe Box with over 2000 cards (all post 1990)
but filled with stars for nothing. My son loved it and said to me can we
finsih these sets ? I guess we have a new collector and a future OBCer. My
son also picked out a couple great cards from Jimmys Box. He picked out a 55
Johnny Pordres card ( his first Brooklyn Dodger Card) DAm though I wanted the
card, but he found it first, and he loved it. He also picked out a 58 topps
Nellie Fox A/S card and picked up a few Tipton 51 bowmans. Kids got good
taste already.
I only spent a couple hours there but it was great. Spending time with
my son at a show was just perfect.

Ball Park franks here (that plump when you cook 'em) so settling for second
best is okay. I suspect this flu will have me on the couch at around one
o'clock, just as the Angels prepare to drive the proverbial stake right into
what little heart the Yankees have. Hope they are made to walk home once
they have been soundly thrashed. Enjoy the golf course Yanks!

I've decided to add 1963 Fleer Baseball to my want lists. I just
picked up my first one on ebay tonight - Willie Mays, card #5. Any
others would be most welcome!

I have Morales with black over pink(2 of them), Hisle with no seams(2 of them),
and Harrison with black over pink
... the plot thickens!

I'm still trying to document the 1978 color variations - they are the seams
on the baseballs in the top corners that give the positions. Does anyonehave
any of these?
#374 Morales - with pink seams
#520 Hisle - with pink seams or black seams
#536 Harrison - with pink seams

From: "Chuck Paris"

Seems like this is the time of year that I come out of hibernation and get active
with my baseball cards again..... cool weather and Post-Season gamesare
what does it, I think. Been pulling the cards out of the closet yesterday
and today and am trying to get organized. Got a few questions, comments,
etc. and hope to hear from a few of you guys.....

1. I've had a few hits in the last couple of weeks.... thanks go out to Joe
Cerullo, Lynn Miller, Dave Skoglund and especially Earl Kilbourn for an OBC
cap as well as cards !!

2. I have been on the mail servers off and on since last January so I know
that there are some new guys but not sure who exactly. If you are relatively
new, give me a holler. Your lists may be relatively easy for me to hit.

3. OBC Top 3 List - I had almost forgotten about this list and haven't updated
it for a while. Below is a link for your reference. LMK if you want to
be added or updated. I am going to use it myself to try to send out a bunch
of dups; probably Sunday.
http://home.attbi.com/~chuckparis/obctop3.html

4. T206's are still one of my main interests. Here are a few that I have to
trade. Half-way decent condition with common backs...Barbeau, Beckley (HOF),
Chappelle, Clark, Jones (Detroit), Lindaman, Thielman and Wright. Here
are a bunch that are in really rough shape. They are all Sovereign backs
but are 75-90% skinned .....Devore, Fiene, Flanagan, Hallman, Hartsel andShaw.

5. Finally, I was thinking of doing a little football betting on the internet.
Does anyone out there have any experience with any of the hundreds ofsportsbooks
on the internet??

Thanks for reading; hope to hear from some of you guys,

Chuck Paris

Subject: Variations
To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: ChicoD1@aol.com

I have seen a ton of emails lately listing all kinds of variations from all
kinds of sets. Is anyone logging all of these? I know someone had a
variations page a while back (I don't know if that page is still around).
Would those variations be something that can be on our webpage? There are
things that I have never heard of and I'm sure this info would be valuable
not only to us, but to visitors. Any ideas on this (or if there is a source
that has all this variations listed)?

Subject: Ft. Wash--Way Late
To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: dsh46@aol.com

Hey All:

Got back a week ago and this is the 1st chance I've had to do some e-mail.
Had a great time at the Ft. Wash show. Bob Reed picked me up in Manhattan
and we met up with a bunch of obc'ers at the show, including ye olde friar,
andy cook and mac wubben, steve rittenberg and ken morganti, richard kimball
and his wife (who is apparently used to being dragged to shows) plus a late
appearance from the grizzled one himself.

The show (my first there) had some great tables--best selection i've seen in
years and i was able to pick up some oddball topps for my type set and
managed to finish off the 65 embossed set, plus (almost) the 63
peeloffs--couldn't find that yaz anywhere! also got to go through roger
neufeldt's cheapo 53 bowmans and 55 topps and filled in a mess of commons
from those sets. All in all, a real nice day. Hope to do it again soon and
definitely looking forward to the 2003 national in a.c.

Subject: MEETING THE TRADER
To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: Celenox@aol.com

Well let me start by saying this is a Rambling and a thank you>
A couple weeks ago Doug Smith (TRADER DOUG) told me he was going to be
in NYC for a couple days, Unfortunately he was here when i had to Pull a 24
hour tour at work, so we lost out on hanging out Sunday, but we mad plans to
meet at my house for a few hours on his way to Boston.
Well, Doug Stopped my and came with gifts. Doug checks in with a 1933
Goudey Bud Clancy (Brooklyn dodger) card, a topps red back Brooklyn dodger of
gene hermanski, a 1909 T206 Brooklyn Superbas Dunn card and 18 hits to my 72
topps including Jim Palmer, and Willie McCovey, a 2002 toops 1952 W/S
highlights with Jackie Robinson,Preacher roe and Peewee Reese, And 94 upper
deck jackie robinson. Thank you very much.
After we swapped some cardboard (i was only able to hit him 1 time
with an exhibit card and a Nap Lajoie HOF postcard...i kinda felt like I
cheated him, we talked about sports drank Coffee and smoked Cigarettes. We
talked about other OBC members, talked about the Brooklyn Dodgers, NY
giants...Sport Stadiums and areas they are in, and our families. Doug got to
see first hand my love for the NY METS, Mike Piazza, and Autographs. We
looked over my T206 collection (which is minute compared to Doug's, but I
gave him a little pointer on how to afford the Big 3 of the set without
paying top dollar...Doug that's our secret don't give it out.....!
Let me wrap this up buy saying I was very glad Doug stopped by, I love
meeting you guys, and Doug is a real great guy, who is just as nice and
genuine in person as he is online. Thanx For stopping by Doug.

hi: with some frequency recently, i have been told that my wantlist is
getting harder to hit. in some respects, i am flattered and excited that i
have knocked most of the easy ones off. on the other hand, i am wondering if
the theory i have about certain cards is true: that even though they have
relatively low values, they are very hard to come by.

so this is an attempt to generate some response to that question as well as
maybe shake a few trees and find some hits to my wantlist. the 1000 card
mark is still possible by year end if i can knock most of these off. any
help would be greatly appreciated and rewarded. thanks, gary mandell

For those of you who claimed Post and Kelloggs cards, they all went

particular part always brings a smile to my tired, old face.

That is, when I go up to the window in our tiny, smalltown post

George Vrechek wrote a terrific two-part article for Sports Collectors Digest

concluded with this week's issue. The entire article can be viewed by
selecting "The Library" tab on the left side of the main OBC web page menu,
then clicking on the bottom link under "Articles by OBC Members." Or, if your
tastes run to instant gratification, load the following web page:

http://www.oldbaseball.com/refs/burdick.html

I have not yet put the pictures and captions in there, mainly because my kids
outvoted me 2-1 and decided to play SpongeBob SquarePants computer game,
kicking me off my own computer. (I'll stick the pictures in tomorrow.) But do
yourself a favor and read this article. Apart from being very well researched
and a summary of very significant hobby information, it's quite enjoyable to
read. Also, if you get a chance, please send a note of appreciation to the
editors of Sports Collectors Digest to plug this kind of research (and OUR
kind of author!) in their publication.

Subject: May need an OBCAC judgement call on this one
To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: WMDpks@aol.com

I went to the Gloria Rothstein show in White Plains this past weekend, missed
Rob Gioia by one day, but otherwise had a pretty good time. Ran into
OBC-friendly dealer John Morrison, who said to say hello to all his friends
in OBC including our resident 1920's entertainer from the west coast. He has
a bunch of cards he would like to make available to OBC people at
deep-discount prices, and asked me a few weeks ago what the best way to do
that would be. I told him to get on our web page and put a message on the
message board. This past weekend he said he did that, and got about 10
inquiries and offers on the card he put on the message board, but none of
them were from OBC. He turned them all down, said he would rather sell them
to us instead of using our message board to make them available to total
strangers in the general public. Meanwhile, since we have the mailing list
groups, we rarely use the web site message board for urgent communication.
So, we need a better way. Obviously (or maybe not?) making him a member of
OBC or giving him access to our Yahoo groups mailing lists is not the way to
go, since he's a full-time dealer and much less of a collector. If he were
inclined to do so, he could pull all our individual email addresses off the
web site and when he has a bunch of cards available maybe he could just blast
us an email with what he's got and how much he wants for them. I've never
been in favor of opening up our group to "dealer scum spam" but this guy is
the absolute best and he wants to offer us some terrific cards at frankly
spectacular prices. (I picked up a 1954 Bowman Berra, 1955 Bowman Mays, a
1950 Bowman low number, twelve T53 Cowboy Series (yeah, I'll look at your
wantlist, Trader Jim Wiehe!) and a few other cards for about $65 total.

(From another dealer, as a complete joke, I bought a Topps 1992 #156 Manny
Ramirez, PSA-9 Mint, for five bucks. No kidding!)

Is there some way we can make our email addresses available to him so he can
send us, once in awhile, a list of cards available ranging from specific
needs in OBC conditions to a huge box deal like Lynn Miller got? I guarantee,
this guy is terrific, and is one of just a handful of dealers who want to
arrange to get us what we're looking for because he admires our approach to
collecting. If not, that's OK, but we might be missing out on a great
opportunity. I'm still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on the Lynn
Miller box deal for myself. Some great cards in there!

Maybe we can give John one e-mail address (we can pick who, maybe someone in the OBCAC), and when he has a sale or announcement, we can put it on the OBC announcements server. That way, his message gets out and we don't compromise our mailing list.

Just a thought.

Hello all!

I recently asked my insurance agent what it would cost to add a rider to my

Any information on anyone who has their collection insured by what insurance

what you needed to submit to get the coverage would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Wantlist/eBay Question
To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: toppsrun368@aol.com

I use AOL Hometown to maintain my wantlists b/c I find it easier than
Geocities and with such other hosts as Angelfire, I always get popup ads
which only disrupt. Recently, I have been experiencing problems each time I
go to edit my wantlist. I can access it and make changes fine, but when it
comes to saving my page to hometown, I continuously get error messages such
as "Web Page Not Responding." I get this and hit refresh only to see it come
up again. I then hit the back button and try to resend the page and sometimes
that works. However, today it took me 13 tries to get it to save. This is
especially annoying when I have many changes to make. Sometimes I will just
shut down and retry later. My question is, is this happening to anyone else?
Or is it just my computer? Anyone know what I can do to fix this problem?
If this is an AOL problem, are there any alternate hosts that provide easy to
edit pages? Any help would be appreciated.

On another subject, I have an opinion question to ask regarding eBay. Back
in July I sold some items and all but one transaction went off w/o a hitch.
I had one bidder that never contacted me, never responded to several of my
e-mails, didn't respond to the Payment Reminders or Non-Paying Bidder Alerts
sent out by eBay, and from what I can see, has done no business except for a
single book back in August or so. I relisted the item last month and sold it
successfully. Does this warrant a negative? a neutral to alert people? I
know we discussed the feedback issue back when Brock dealt with his seller
problem. I think we determined that once the 90 days are up, no retaliatory
feedback can be left. Does anyone know otherwise?

Thanks for reading,

Brian, yes indeedy, Canada Post works in weird and wonderful ways, when they
do work at all. However, this one sounds like Customs didn't like it for
some reason rather than Canada Post. Was it opened by Customs, then
resealed? Or just plain refused? I have never heard of one just being
refused and sent back...usually there is a followup letter to the recipient
asking them to come in for an "interview" about the package. This has
happened to me once, and luckily I was playing fair and square, so there was
no problem. Was it a strange shape, or just a regular puffy?

It was a regular puffy with two 50 count plastic boxes full of cards along
with a 9-pocket page stuffed with cards. It was opened and resealed with
marked Canadian tape. They placed "Refused" stickers on two areas and wrote
"RTS" with bold, black marker on the package. Looking at the package, it is
all wrinkled and dirty in some parts from its travels. I have no idea why it
would be returned b/c even after opening it, one could see that the cards
were plain 1970 Topps, wrinkled, creased, and all. I actually declared value
at $10, not $15, and described the contents as a gift of baseball cards.

No clue.

did. I got to eat at a couple of places I hadn't been
to in a long time and cussed when I saw how my high
school had redone the old football field (I mean, COME
ON! Is nothing sacred anymore?).

The wedding went off without a hitch. As the best
man, I gave the groom his final chance to run. When
he didn't take it, I let him know that if he tried to
run from the church, I'd tackle him and drag him back
if necessary.

On Sunday night, it started getting cold. I'm not
talking about "I'm used to Florida" cold; it got down
into the mid-30s. People were getting their wood
stoves ready. Fortunately, I wasn't the only one
wearing a jacket, so at least I still don't stick out
among my old friends as the one who lived down South.

Even worse was the fact that my beloved Yankees got
knocked out of the postseason...I'll explain how this
was all my fault in my next email.

I finally got home yesterday, picked up my mail, and
started sifting through almost 400 (!) emails that had
accumulated while I was away. I'll be sending thanks
out shortly to all those who sent me surprises.

Take care,

Subject: Here's why the Yankees lost...
To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: Chris Stufflestreet

I know this subject was laid to rest a few days ago,
but I just got back from a weeklong trip and felt this
group would be interested to hear how I (a big Yankees
fan) personally screwed my team out of their
postseason trip.

I was born in upstate New York in '72. When Dad got
back from his last tour in 'Nam, I moved around the
country as part of a Navy family. While I lived in
NY, the Yankees weren't quite the "Bronx Bombers" of
lore. I was living in Virginia when they had their
great run in the late 1970s, and was in Orlando when
the Yanks made the 1981 Series.

In 1982, I moved back to my little hometown in upstate
NY. Including my time in the Army, I was a permaent
resident of that state until the 1995 postseason...and
most Yankees fans can remember having to be saddled
with some overpaid, underachieving teams during some
of those years (except for Mattingly). In fact, the
one year they looked like they would actually get to
the series again, there was a strike that finished the

In 1996, I moved to Florida. I immediately found my
team in the Series...against the preferred team of my
new hometown (In Jacksonville, nobody follows the
Marlins or Devil Rays; here it's Braves country).
Most of the years I've been here, it's been great to
be a fan of the Yankees.

This year, I was visiting my old hometown when the
Yankees got hammered. I'll go on the record and give
the Angels the credit they deserve: they played the
same game as the 1996 Yankees did, and played with a
heart and fire that only comes from a determination to
be the best. They beat the Yankees because they
played better baseball.

But I'm still convinced that it wasn't a mere
coincidence that the Yankees packed up and left Yankee
Stadium at the same time that I happened to be sitting
in the state of New York. Don Zimmer is a friend of
my mother, perhaps she mentioned that I was going to
be there.

It's all my fault.

For the record, I'm waiting to see how long it takes
for somebody to offer me a plane ticket to Syracuse
for next October...

From: "Joe Isaac"

Just thought I would add more discussion to the variations that have been
popping up lately.

I received a 67 checklist from the 4th series in a recent trade. I scanned
the checklist to see who was included and found a possible variation with
this card.

On the card front, the sequence is ...307, 308, 309, 210, 311, ... I though
this was odd that 210 was printed instead of 310. #310 is Gary Peters as is
listed on the card.

Anyone aware of this variation? Or is it simply an uncorrected error?

Yes, after nearly a 2 month hiatus, I have gotten off my keister long
enough to generate another new set for the page. With this one, I'm trying
a slightly different format that I think is a little more appealing. LMK
what you think of it. I have eliminated the "javascript" page, and have
produced what I think is a nicer version of the main page. I'm also
considering breaking some of the larger sets up into "series" to eliminate
the huge load time which can bee seen for the main page of larger

My answer to the question is YES. I remember flipping cards in grade school.
In fact, I remember one fella who used to put a piece of bubble gum on the

close to completing my Jim Rice collection, except the proliferation of

My primary medium for collecting is ebay, and I have not seen them

exhaustive list.

If anyone can provide a description of the Boston Herald set, and the

I spent many hours in the late 60's early 70's flipping. We also had a
variation of the game. Each player would lean some cards against a wall.
We could then flip towards the wall trying to knock the cards down. If you
knocked a card (or cards!) down with a flip, you won them.

Perhaps we can have a flip contest at the Shriner's in November.

I need to chime in on this one....
I can't tell you how many hours I spent in the
school yard pitching cards. In Rhode Island we
"pitched", not "flipped".
As I remember we had four variations of pitch.

1. Leaners - the pitchers would toss their cards
towards a wall. The first to get a leaner collected
all the cards tossed.

2. Nearsies - When you were short of time. (like when
the bell sounded but you still wanted to get a couple
more pitches in). Simply the closest to the wall won
the tossed cards. You would generally make a card
wager (closest gets 10 of the losers cards).

3. Farsies - Always a betting game. The pitchers
would put up a stack of cards and the person who
pitched their card the farthest would win the pile.

4. Knockdown - By far the most fun game. My personal
favorite. The pitchers would lean a number of cards
against the wall (usually 2-4) and then take aim. He
who knocked down the last card got all the pitched
cards. Of course firing your cards at a wall from
6-10 feet away as hard as you could throw them wasn't
the best thing for their quality, but what did we
We played kneeling. You could also borrow from the
pile if you were out of cards and the game was still
going on.

When you took all you opponents cards you could brag
that you "drilled" him. (or her). We actually had one
girl in our group of friends who was really good. I
remember her drilling me one day in a most memorable
game of knockdown. I remember she won with her lucky
card (a 71 rudy may).
I eventually got my revenge. I later drilled her and
I still have her lucky Rudy May card !

Growing up in Massachusetts, I learned two different flipping games. The
one we did at school (early 60s) was to spin them against a wall. The closest
card won. A leaner was the closest, a kissie just 'kissed' the wall with
a corner. I don't remember what we called a card that had the whole sidetouching.
I found my first card and turned it into a half dozen or so before
Mom bought me some a year or two later.
In 1964 a fella moved in behind me that taught me a different game. This
one we flipped against the wall but just kept flipping cards until one card
covered a part of another card. The thrower of the covering card took all
the cards thrown up to that point. I cleaned him out of all his '63s.
In the mid 60s I moved to California and taught my buddies there how toflip
but we ended up spending more time looking for pop bottles so we could
buy fresh packs and then we traded alot.

As far as leaners & such, I'm no good. But I'd take cards to school
like those insert cards with advertising or reg playing cards & pass
them out. FTR, over 100 people have tried in 28 years but nobody has
thrown further. It's kinda like those stupid human tricks on
Letterman, you may be real good, but who cares! Tried to pierce a
watermelon but couldn't do it. In Guinness yrs ago & the record was
like 186 feet (playing card). I can throw about 100 feet.
We also use to have battles. I'd give 50 cards to each person & we'd
choose sides & whiz cards at each other. We didn't use eye protection
either (idiots) but nobody ever got an eye hurt.
I'd talked with someone at Limerock cards about throwing cards at a
target or challenging people at $1 a throw (win $100) for charity on
Saturday at the Atlanta National in 92. It was his idea & I was
excited! Didn't they have some kind of card throwing upstairs on the
1st day? I don't remember now (10 yrs later!) exactly what happened but
I did find their table at the show & it seems like the guy I had talked

From: Dan Austin

OBC -

I just got a nice letter back from our own Frank Thomas. For those new in
the group, the original Frank Thomas (1951-1966) is an honorary member of
OBC. Didn't know that? A bit before my time, Frank apparently had a fire
at his home which destroyed his card collection (some of the old timers in
the group might be able to fill us in a bit more here). Since then, Frank
has been adopted by OBC, and we've been helping his rebuild his run of
Topps sets. Frank was once again nice enough to sign a few cards for me to
pass along to OBCers who would like an autographed Frank Thomas card. I
have a '58 Topps and 2 '59 Topps "Danny's All-Stars" up for grabs if you
would like one. Frank also put out another plea for helping him finish off
his sets. He's down to some tough cards now (just 86 left to finihs his
Topps run), so I doubt hits will be coming fast and furious. Maybe we
could pitch in and snag a few at shows or on eBay for him, or maybe one of
our "big spenders" has one or two available in their dupes box. Here is
the list: 1952 Topps - all high numbers (311-407) except
313/316/317/368/385. 1953 Topps: 82/Mantle, 244/Mays. Maybe we can dig up
a few '52 highs for him from the group? All of these are going to be
tough, but if anyone wants to pitch in to do something for Frank, LMK.

From: "Steve Rittenberg"

Well I know only about a dozen of you collect non-sport but I'm working on changing
that over time. Anyway, this was the weekend for the twice annual
"Philly non-sport show" held in East Nowhere NJ. Though advertised at the
intersection of Rt73 & Rt 140, its far from anything like a highway. The
directions I had took my right past the First Union Center in Philly. With
traffic and rain (and getting lost) , it only took my 4 hours to make the
150 mile drive. Add to that the fact that I was up all night preparingfor
the show and left the house about 3 hours later than I expected and I was
in a lousy mood by the time I walked in at 6:30pm. No discount for late
admission. Its like these promoters think they are doing me a favor by"only"
charging $4 or $5. Well, I'm going to start to do more through the

Anyway, the show was ok. One dealer I looked forward to seeing was ill anddidn't
make it. Three others were at the recent Fort Washington show so they
had little that I hadn't already picked through. I did manage to find
a couple of Allen & Ginter cards for $1 (can't do that with baseball!!) and
a few Horrors of War. This is a legendary (and infamous set) that I've
completed about 2/3 of. Richard Hankins will be getting lots of my dupes
(100+ in a box around here) but I have others (some free, some dealer scum)
if anyone else wants to start this really cool set. Today I went backto
the show. Had hoped to see ex-OBCer Ralph Genova yesterday and the Grizzled
One (Howard Morgan) today but saw neither. Made some good hits today
including 3 of the 4 cards needed for Lynn Miller's Naval Victories set. Unfortunately,
I didn't have time to go back and pay whatever it took to finish
his set for him. Also found a bunch of cheap T53 Cowboys from my list
(but forgot to bring Dave Fallen's list). I picked up one of the last3
T59 Flags of All Nations (but didn't have Erik Greenwood's list).

I have a large amount of stuff to put into my albums and redo my lists. Its
a pretty good show but it will be better if (a) they move it to Fort Washington
PA (as is rumored) and (b) I remember to bring the lists of other OBCers
working on non-sports.

In the Dealer Scum category, there are some great catalogs out there where are
mandatory if you are going to have the "non-sport" habit. "Price Guideto
the Non Sport Cards" has an encyclopedic listing of cards from various eras.
I have a couple of extra copies from "1930-1960" that I picked up for
$10 each. Its an amazing read, with short essays for each of the sets (a
bit like SCD) and some longer essays on the major sets and trends from the
period. One of my very long-term projects is to create electronic checklists
for non-sport cards, something I've seen nowhere else. If you are working
on a set but don't want to buy the book, let me know and I will type
up a list for you.

Thanks for reading!

Here are some availables:

1952 Bowman: 157 160 168 170 (all in poor condition with tape, paper loss,etc.)
1953 Bowman Color: 13 76 (also in poor condition)
1962 Topps: 122 (green tint)
1964 Topps: 207
1969 Deckle: 2 (Powell)
1970 Fleer World Series: 20

Also, I picked up a couple of interesting items at rummage sales. One is abasketball
card game by Built-Rite/Warren. I can't find a copyright date on
it. Based on the artwork, it appears to be from the 1950s/1960s. Does anyone
have an interest in this?

I also picked up a Cadaco All-Star Baseball game. The box has a 1968 copyright,
but the instructions have a 1980 date. The stadium is intact, and there
are plenty of player disks (including Babe Ruth and Robin Yount). Doesanyone
collect these?

Best wishes,

I need a little help trying to identify a card I have. The card is a
portrait shot of Bob Johnson (I think he may be refered to as Indian Bob
Johnson in some circles). It is 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" and the back is blank. His
name, "BOB JOHNSON," is listed at the bottom of the card, but still within
the picture, which is a muted black and white. Also listed under the card is
the name of his team, "PHILADELPHIA A.L." in smaller block letters than the
name of the player.
I am not at all certain, but I believe it is from the mid-30's. I
have done some research, and, so far, I have eliminated all issues of Johnson
except 1935 Demaree Die Cuts R304 and 1937 O-Pee-Chee Batter Ups V300. I have
no idea what either of those sets looks like. Could it be one of those? Any
other ideas?

What we lacked in numbers we compensated for with enthusiasm!
As previously reported by Mike & Mark, we had a small OBC getogether at
a likewise small card show in the Detroit area. Besides myself, Mike
Rich and Mark Talbot, Ron Perry also attended, sans OBC hat. Mike was
able to vouch for him with the dealer so Ron got the OBC discount even
without his hat. Unfortunately, Mark is busier then a one legged man in
a butt kicking contest these days, and only spent about a half hour or
so with us. We all spent a lot of time rifling through the 50% off boxes
and walked away with a goodly amount of cardboard. I spent a lot of time
ducking cards tossed my way by Mike and to a lesser degree, Mark. How
they keep track of who collects what, amazes me. After the show, Mike,
Ron and I went to a local Family Diner for a bite to eat and some
conversation. We mainly discussed future card shows, particularly the
Toronto show, which I'm really looking forward to. Thanks guys for a fun

Subject: Where's that Dave guy been lately?
From: "David Skoglund"

Hello out there in vintage baseball card land. I haven't been too
active lately, and here's the reason.

Last spring my wife found out that her job with the State of
Minnesota was being eliminated due to the State budget crisis. Her
job would end at the beginning of September. So, with that in mind we
tried to cut back on some items. For me, that included cards.

September 3rd was her last day at her job. Over the summer she had
quite a few interviews and a couple of job offers. They all
represented a huge cut in pay and benefits, something we couldn't
handle so she was forced to turn them down and keep looking.

She had an interview for job with the State of Minnesota on September
26th. They offered her the job that morning and she accepted. That
was a good thing, because at the exact time she was at her job
interview, I was in a meeting where I was told that my position was
being eliminated. I worked for a software company that laid off 12%of
their staff (230 some people). I was there 8 years, and was one of
the most senior people in our group. I guess that means I was too
expensive since they kept the four people that started in the last

So, now it is my turn to job hunt and stay at home with our daughter.
I don't know that I'll have much time to be active this fall, but
I'll try.

Anyway, if anyone knows of any openings for technical writers in the
Twin Cities area, please let me know. Maybe some of you out there
work for big companies that might have an office in this area.

And now the recent (las 6 weeks or so) arrivals:

Todd Knowles =96 a 1958 Topps SCP

Kent Goto =96 1 1955 Bowman, and 18 (!) 1956 Topps

Peter Mead =96 one each of 1967, 1969, 1971, and 1978

Geno Wager =96 1978 Topps Dave Winfield

Lynn Miller =96 In addition to a very nice birthday card, Lynn sends 12
1960 Topps, 1 1965, 2 1968s, 3 1971s, 1 1972, and 3 1978s. Included
are such things as a Frank Howard RC, Rod Carew, Steve Carlton,

is # 141- Joe Jay- there is a mouse chew at the bottom left hand corner of
the card approx- 13 mm long and 7 mm wide- he also let me have the card
because there is a crease at the bottom- one of the few cards in his set he
said that has a crease and needs upgrading- i am working on the 54 set also-
i don't have a single card centered as well and with the flawless look of

Just thought I'd let you know that I am currently in the process of sponsoring this page on behalf of OBC. Sponsorship lasts one year, with the funds going to assist in the upkeep of what I believe to be one of the best baseball web resources out there.

We can add some text to the page - a short statement or message of some sort - so does anyone have any suggestions? Let me know!

In addition to Stan's page, I'm also going to sponsor my own HOM nominee, Dick McAuliffe, and Scotland's most famous baseball export, Bobby Thomson.

Page sponsorship costs as little as $10, and can be paid via PayPal. Why not check it out, and get a few more OBC mentions on this terrific site?

For $5, you can sponsor: Bubba Church, Charlie Silvera

For $10 : Gus Bell, Jose Cardenal, Dean Chance, Vic Davalillo, Woody English, Johnny Groth, Johnny Grubb, Woodie Held, Billy Hoeft, Jay Johnstone, Willie “Puddin’ Head” Jones, Darold Knowles, Phil Linz, Roy McMillan, Don Mincher, Jim Nash, Jamie Quirk, Gus Triandos.

For $15: Clete Boyer, Bob Horner, Gene Mauch, Rick Monday.

For $20: Willie Horton, Kent Hrbek, Vada Pinson, Rick Reuschel, Reggie Smith.

For $25: Norm Cash

For $35: Don Zimmer

For $40: Ron Santo

If your player’s name doesn’t appear on this list, I’m afraid it’s because someone else has beaten you to it!

OBCer Andy Baran obviously got the jump on all of us, as he is already the proud sponsor of his man, Sid Gordon.

Cheers for now!

To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com
From: Obc Spike

In case you're mulling the benefits that
BaseballReference.com sponsorship can provide,
consider this information cleaned from my HOM man
Jamie Quirk's page:

In 1984, he played for two teams, the White Sox and
the Cleveland Indians. His "stint" with the Indians
was the memorable experience of one game, one AB, one
hit, one HR (solo). He provided a sacrifice fly in
three games and two ABs for the White Sox, giving him
a season 1.333 slugging percentage and 2:1 plate
appearance-to-RBI ratio. Barry Bonds should be so
lucky--and he would certainly want more than the
league minimum!

Other wonderful Quirk facts ("quirks," I call them):
1. Most similar player in performance at age 26? Ken
Caminiti (I'm guessing pre-steroids)
2. Participated in five post-season series, including
1976 with the Royals (2-run triple!) and 1992 with the
A's, his final year in the bigs
3. Best known as a Royal, but spent 7 of his 18
seasons with other teams: Indians (<1), White Sox
(<1), Yankees (<1), Orioles (<1), Cardinals (1), A's
(3+), and Brewers (1)
4. Played every position but pitcher during career,
though his 6'4" size made catcher the ideal choice
5. Picked up 500th hit in his 17th season, at age 36

Naturally, I am gratified to see my HOM page as the
4th Google link for the search "jamie quirk."
Hopefully Jamie realizes that "Hall of Mediocrity" is
a sign of respect and recognition--I recall Rick
Monday being a little slow on the uptake.

Speaking of the Royals and Jamie, here's the story on
his unfortunate firing by Allan Baird in 2001, after
several years as the KC bench coach:
http://www.kcstar.com/item/pages/sports.pat,sports/3acd0b85.a09,.html

As the article mentions, he's been in baseball since
age 17 and isn't ready to retire (or financially
able). He was the bullpen coach for Texas in 2002,
which brings the unfortunate stress of having to work
with the Texas bullpen every day (um, OW).

I conclude with the best Quirk story ever, from the
MLB's biggest comeback prior to that 2001 M's-Indians

In Sept 1984, the Twins were beating Cleveland 10-0
but lost 10-11. Asked about his 2 out error that
opened the flood gates, Gary Gaetti said, "It's hard
to throw when both your hands are wrapped around your
throat." Ron Davis gave up the final blow, Jamie
Quirk's HR. (Quirk had only 1 AB for Cleveland, a
4.000 slugging average). The loss ended the Twins
playoff hopes.

This game was mentioned in the Royals' 25th
Anniversary Book 'Moments, Memories, and Miracles', as
Jamie Quirk's biggest claim to Royals fame (he has
many). Quirk had been released by the White Sox, and
was working as a coach before the Indians offered him
a contract. On his way to Cleveland in late August, he
stopped off to visit the Royals for Paul Splittorf's
retirement dinner. At the dinner, he noted that the
Tribe was playing the Twins, the Royals' main
competition for the divisional title, in the
next-to-last series of the year, and promised the
Royals he would hit a home run against Minnesota to
beat them and help the Royals win the division.

Quirk did just that, in that incredible comeback from
a 10-0 deficit; having entered the game as a
pinch-runner, he hit a home run in his only at-bat all
season for Cleveland, winning the game 11-10 and
providing the Royals with some needed cushion on their
way to winning the division.

I noticed on Kent's wantlist the following line:

"I will take any San Francisco Forty-niner or Los Angeles Ram."

For me to get even with Kent I would have to actually send him a 49er, like
Jeff Garcia. I don't mean a card, I mean the dude. Do you think this is
what Kent means???

Subject: OBC HOLIDAY GIFT EXCHANGE
Date: Fri, 18 Oct 2002 05:01:45 +0000
From: "Jeffrey Sackmann"

THE OBC HOLIDAY GIFT EXCHANGE!

It's fun, it's easy, and the end result is a gift for you!

For those of you who are new, it's just like a "Secret Santa" exchange,
where everybody who participates gets a gift, and gives a gift--secretly.

Here's how it works:

1. Send an email to ME: jeff_sackmann@hotmail.com telling me you'd like to
participate. (It'd be helpful to me if you did so as a reply to this
e-mail, or with "OBC Holiday Card Exchange" in the subject line--but I don't
need a four-digit number, like the process used in the past.)

2. I will put you into my super-secret database, and my kittens (who are
experts in causing all types of chaos) will do their best to randomize the
process of who gets who.

3. I will send you an e-mail pretty soon (might be a few days, might be a
couple of weeks), telling you who you will be sending a gift to.

4. You will have several weeks to find a gift for your designated recipient.

5. Mail the gift with enough spare time to ensure that the post office gets
it to its destination in time (especially if you're sending to a foreign
destination). MARK CLEARLY on this envelope: "Do Not Open Until Dec. 25!"

6. On December 25th (12:01 AM is permissible), open your gift. Send a note
to the OBC thank-you list AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (e.g. 12:02 AM). A big part
of the fun of this process is the deluge of e-mail on the 25th.

Easy, right?

There are a few rules which will make your life easier and my life easier:

1. No kvetching about who you got. (After all, somebody's gotta get
2. No kvetching about who you got. (After all, somebody's gotta get
3. Keep your gift modest: if you're buying, $5 - $10 ONLY. Some of the best
gifts traded in recent years have been of sentimentally valuable
memorabilia, even homemade! It doesn't have to be a card, and it doesn't
have to be on a wantlist.
4. If you wish to participate, E-mail me by Nov. 20th AT THE LATEST. (I
insist on this date to give people time to find gifts and ship them.) The
sooner you e-mail me, the sooner I can assign you a recipient.
5. That's November 20th, you procrastinators.
6. Tips for the OBC Holiday Gift Exchange curator are welcome.

That's lots of rules, but it's really easy, and always a blast. E-mail me
with any questions.

Subject: COBB
From: Peter Iversen

I went with Denice's cousin Jim (my cousin in law I guess) a couple weeks
ago and saw a Play I wanted to recommend to all of you if it ever comes
your way. It is called "COBB" - and is much better than the recent film
or anything else I have seen about the subject. Very well written and
thought provoking - not just taking cheep shots or coming up with
simplistic answers - or judging on a one dimensional basis. The best
thing I can say about it is after two weeks I am still thinking about it
and enjoying the experience. The acting was also WONDERFUL!

The play COBB ran off Broadway for a while, won some awards and I think
that this was the first run of the play since then. It closed here in LA
(actually Burbank at the Falcon Theater) a couple of days after I saw it.
I hope it comes back again so I can go again and maybe get some other
West Coast OBCers to come and see it with me.

The play is one act (a long act) and has three people who are playing Ty
- as a young ballplayer - a middle aged business man and an old mad about
to die. They all interact with each other in ways I never thought would
'work' - but they really do. There is one other character in the play
and that is Oscar Charleston ("The Black Ty Cobb") - who interacts with
the Cobbs from time to time in very interesting, funny and thought
provoking ways. There is also some use of multi media stuff.

Anyone in the New York area see this play?? I hope all OBCers who are
interested in baseball in the early 1900's get a chance to see it! Now I
REALLY have to find a way to get a T205 Cobb card for my set!!

Thanks for listening...

personal puzzler:
Gus Zernial's 1952 Topps card shows him holding up a bat with six

What is the story behind this card? Did Zernial have some six-homer feat
from 1951?

I believe the answer can be found on the back of his card. It says "Gus
also tied the major league record for the most home runs in 3 straight games
with 6 circuit clouts..." On May 17th, 1951 he actually hit his 7th in 4
games which tied another record.

The real question is How did they get the baseballs to stay there?

Greetings all,

Just a friendly reminder for my New England neighbors (and those that happen
to be in the area) that the annual GBSCC "Shriner's" show is November 1-3. I
already know of a few folks who will be there (Spike, Bob D, Robert, Steve
R). My plan is to be there parts of Friday and Saturday. As has become
tradition, I suggest that we have our OBC lunch/swap session in the dining
hall Saturday at noon. I'm also going to try and organize a flipping contest
for those who are interested - hopefully the first of many. For those in the
area who haven't been, this show is (in my opinion) by far and away the best
show in New England. Hope to see you there!

Happy Collecting!

I know I am not all that timely with replies lately but my two cents on

When i was young we played three different flipping games...

the first was you each leaned two cards against a wall. The first person to
knock both cards down got all the cards on the ground.

the second was the standard leaner game...flip a card, if it leans you get
everything on the ground.

the last was called pile up....put a card on the ground about 10 feet
away...toss cards...the person to cover the last part of the card visible
gets all cards on the ground.

I was best at the third game...the last time I flipped was at the National a
few years back in Anaheim at the swap session...soon it went on to pitching
pennies...i think Rick Ellison cleaned several of us out.

Subject: Feedback on Burdick Article and more info
Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 08:02:04 -0500
From: "George Vrechek"

I've gotten email as a result of my two articles on Jefferson Burdick and the
ACC which appeared recently in SCD (and is now on the OBC Library page). For
those of you interested, here are a few of the emails as to other information
on Burdick et al.
George Vrechek
Hi George,
I enjoyed part one of your article on Burdick in SCD. I haven't gotten the
issue with part 2 in it yet. Thank you for the kind words about my book,
that was nice of you to put that in.

Since my book came out, I have found out a lot more about Burdick. A couple
of things that might be of interest to you is that he did attend at least
one baseball game, so that New York Times article was wrong about that. I
don't know how much he knew about baseball, but I do believe he followed
the sport to some degree. He mainly was interested in cards, but he had
other interests as well, mostly sprouted from his study of the cards.

When I contacted the Met in 1988 when I was writing my book, I asked them
for a picture of Burdick and was told they didn't have any. That surprised
me since he was alive for 15 years after he initially donated his
collection to them. They had ample opportunity to take his picture, but
didn't. I guess that says something about how much they valued his collection.

There was some controversy about his pasting down the cards in the albums.
Some other collectors were against this, but Burdick decided to do this as
this was the best method he could come up with for displaying the cards. He
reasoned that in the future they could be soaked out if need be. He only
pasted down cards with non-descriptive backs, I believe. Burdick didn't
value the backs particularly, and said on more than one occasion that he
thought cards that were found in albums should just be pulled out rather
than soaked out if the backs were non-descriptive. I am kind of surprised
at this, and I'm sure not all collectors agreed with this even back then,
but he probably handled too many cards to painstakingly remove every one in
the best method possible.

When I was at the Met in 1988, I was able to look at some albums. That was
very interesting to me in your article that you are not allowed to do this
anymore. There wasn't a very good system in place then for looking at the
cards, and I am not completely surprised that some cards may have been
stolen from the collection, though that is sad if that happened. Do you
know some of the cards that were stolen?

I noticed that you gave credit to Lionel Carter in your credits. Have you
had contact with him lately. I haven't heard from him in over a year and
just wanted to make sure he is OK.

Best Regards,
-Troy Kirk

Dear Sir: Just finished reading your SCD articles on
the father of card collecting. Years ago I met and
associated regularly with Victor H. White. Victor
was a pioneer collector mostly in postcards. He
had visited Burdick I believe right after WWII.
He also visited Charles Bray more than once.
You will notice Victor's name on page 11 of the
1967 edition of the ACC. Victor told me the place
where JR lived was small But completely stocked
with insert/trade/postcards etc. They were stored
on shelves from floor to ceiling and the aisles
were narrow as room space was scarce. Victor, a
tall and slender type mentioned JR was a small guy
who was one of a few who could get around the
crammed space. Victor said as soon as the front
door opened you saw shelving-aisles of cards.
Victor mentioned JR took-up living quarters
not far from the museum.
He mentioned that evening when JR told the
curator the final card has been catalogued and
walked home went to bed and never awoke again.
Apparently, that's not exactly true but the yarn
was spoon via Charles Bray to Victor and 10 years later
I'am sure Victor applied his magic to the version he
told me.
I also, bought and traded with Charles Bray and
Buck Barker....but if your doing another story
most readers will probably like to hear about a
fellow named Hendericks or Henderson. Just look
in back on Street & Smiths from the late 1950's
to late 1970's for ATC (ARROWHEAD TRADING CO.)
or BIG LEAGUE GAME CO.,Superior St.,Duluth,MN.
I'll shed more another time.

Dear George ......Thanks for your recent article in SCD about the early days
of the hobby. If you want some information on Charles Bray I could help you
out a little. I met him several times in his later years when he was still
doing his auctions from his house. Please let me know if your interested as
I would be glad to help you out, as I liked Mr. Bray very much. Best
Regards, John T. McLean

From: "Steve Rittenberg"

Yesterday was the start to a local three day show held 4 times in year in Chantilly
VA, about 45 minutes from me. It took me a bit longer to get there
as I forgot how to get there and ended up learning where the Manassas Civil
War Battlefield site is. I think these same directions have been offered
to Mac Wubben who I hope ignored me.

The show starts at 2pm but I usually try to get there around 8am so I can help
a friend unload his van and set up. I missed out on the hard work this
time but got to see him anyway. He's a memorabilia and autograph guy now.
I asked him for an American League ball so I can collect some signatures
from OBCers to deliver to Rick Redpath next month. Turns out they don't
make AL balls anymore so I had to settle for an NL ball. Settle? I paid
NINE BUCKS! It didn't feel like I was settling! I will start collecting
signatures tomorrow when some local OBCers come over.

At my first stop, I went through a shoe box of OPC baseball cards, hoping to
find some hits for tough lists. Just came up with one from '76 for Dan Austin.
Then I saw a cool box labelled "off grade hall of famers". My "gift"
budget is near zero and none really stuck out as "had to buy on the hope
that someone else would re-pay me". But I did strike gold looking through
his other stuff. Don't you just love being the first guy who comes upwhen
a dealer has just picked up a cheap Seaver RC? Well, maybe it neverhappens
to you but its happened a couple times to me in the past month. Note
to self: Build that darned dealer scum website. You can't eat cards! The
other highlight was a Koufax RC, previously owned by someone who maynot
have been a Koufax fan, by the look of the card. Also found a cheap Red
Heart Snider, '63 Bombers Best, '56 Snider and Koufax, 68 Clemente and Clemente
AS (Glenn!) and one or two others. So my budget was shot right there,
I figured.

But to those who know me, they shake their heads (in disgust? amazement?) when
they realize that if people will keep taking my checks, I'll keep writing
them. So next I went to see William Chappell. He's slowly building his
reputation as an OBC dealer. He's the only guy who ever had a PILE of'48
Leaf SPs. Thanks to an OBCer who may wish to remain anonymous, there are
only three left in that pile. Let me know if you want to contact him. William
always has a showcase of stuff in big heavy screwdowns -- a signal
to me that I shouldn't even bother looking and then another showcase withmore
reasonably priced cards. I'm on the lookout for a 41PB DiMaggio forBob
Donaldson and saw one for $500. Personally, I'd pay about $100 for aDiMaggio
card (being a Sox fan) but I'll let Bob decide if that one is worth
it. I looked at the other stuff William had. Boy was in for a shock.
He had SEVEN of the Red Sox from the E-91-C set, including Harry Hooper,Tris
Speaker and Smoky Joe Wood. Again, way over my budget but when willI
ever see these again? Gee - have yoi ever seen a few from this set sideby
set? Every guy looks the same!! Other than the type of glove or the
pose, there is no way you could actually know who you had if the name were
covered up. Hmm. Maybe I can add my own Babe Ruth card to this set with
the help of a scanner and a color printer.

And the story isn't over yet. Next stop -- Ron Barrett. Ron is one of OBCs
favorite dealers though he doesn't do anything outside of shows. Andy
Cook and I have known Ron for about 6 or 7 years I think and he's become a
real friend. I've been pestering Ron for a couple of years to let me come
over and see what he has in his basement. Supposedly it has everythingand
anything though nothing is organized. About once a year, Ron puts together
a "bargain box" that Andy and I feast one like piranas. The best find
yet, a 34 Diamond Star Lefty Grove that went for $100 below what you could
expect to pay. Ron prices most of these using the "sunk cost" rule --
whatever he gets is profit. My budget at this point is ZERO, meaning I only
pulled the really good stuff including a '53 Bowman for $1, $33 Goudey
for $1, the third 50 Bowman Reese to be added to my dupes box (!), some
$5 T206s and some unmentionables. Ron also keeps an extensive inventory
of high grade (ex) commons at reasonable prices so I always check them out
when I'm getting close on some sets. I actually found the 62 Topps DickStuart
(to replace the one I lost) and the 62 TOpps Dick Stuart GREEN TINT(my
second to last green tint) in his commons box. I swear that Stuart is
a tough card to find. I probably paid more for Stuart ($2 or $3) than Idid
for any of the other green tints, except for guys like Kaline. But it
was worth it, IMHO.

This show is slowly sinking. Dealers seem to be pulling out for lack of business,
lack of advertsing, who knows what else. In fact, I heard that about
a dozen dealers pulled out because of the recent sniper activity in this
area. Best that I can tell, there was no sniper activity while I was at
the show so I think they would have been safe. I suppose that joke
may be in poor taste to those who are really spooked by this stuff.

Back to the show report. Because of the lack of dealers, Ron Barrett was given
a couple of extra tables. After two years of pleading to see his basement
where you can find everything and anything, I was finally invited over
to see it. We picked up a bunch of crappy UV sets for him to sell plus
a few other things. I ended up with some sort of Bobby Doerr picture plus
one of the re-made (?) Hartland statues of Ted Williams. I don't think
there is lots of OBC grade material down there but I saw piles of Hostesspanels,
odd balls, pubs and everything else. And I think I've found a potential
buyer for most of the crap so my chance may come when I can spend more
time down in his basement. Ron is concerned that (a) once he lets me in,
I will never leave and (b) I'll end up buying EVERYTHING in sight. I think
he's coming around to the belief that I can show restraint in both departments.
Note to Ken and others: Please don't call Ron and tell him otherwise.

Well, I figured I'm about done at the show. Of course, I wasn't. I founda
guy that had a few good things (highs from '65, '71) in a dollar box. I
went back to William Chappell's table and saw that he had put out a hugestack
of Parkhurst hockey. After I sorted out everything, I ended up with
about 10 hits to my sets. I prolly overpaid a bit -- by paying 15% of BV
instead of less than 10% but the stuff is getting harder and harder to find
unless I want to buy single cards on ebay and deal with a $1.29 for a money
order to Canada plus $2 shipping. As I was sorting out the Parkies, I
saw another local guy who I needed to see. This guy is a "small-time" dealer
so his name isn't important to pass along. But he does seem to findpretty
good stuff that he passes along. From his $5 pile, I got a '54 Topps
Martin, '71 Clemente and '62 Post Mantle plus a cool Unitas item for Ed
Schott. Also got a '54 Topps Berra for $10, a Jello Berra and Cepeda, '66
Murcer RC (Lynn Miller), and a few really cheap team cards. And so I will
sneak in an announcement: I am going to start up a team card collection.
I'm interested in all your team cards, preferably unmarked. Eventually,
I will want them (and the ones in my sets) unmarked.

Ok, so now I am REALLY done at the show right? Wrong! I stop back to seeWilliam
Chappell one or two more times. The first time, I see a stack ofcheap
'34 Goudey high numbers. Picked up two for my set. The rest are available
on an "I owe" or "dealer scum" basis. My last purchase from him came
from his "$1-$5" box. I picked up the next-to-last Callahan common I need,
an sweet looking '65 OPC Billy Williams (Dan Austin), a Wade Boggs candy
wrapper (well, that's "unmentionable" but still cool!) and a John Riggins
sticker for Mark Z. Since I had a few more checks left with me, I continued
to look around. Some guy wanted $10 for any of his T218s. I needed
others but the only one worth it was a Jack Johnson, who I think is the toughest
boxer in that set. And I found a non-sport guy I had met on ebay.We
talked a while He told me he has a HUGE inventory of baseball cardsin
crappy condition so eventually I hope to check them out in the next year
or so (as he cleans up / renovates his basement). In the meantime I hope
to buy / trade non-sports with him.

If anyone is looking for one or two commons and can pay full book (or more),
I know a great source. These two old people (who looked like they were 65
when I first saw them almost 10 years ago) bring monster box after monster
box after monster box of commons to shows. They have so much they can't
even bring it all. Here I finished my 198_ football sets (woohoo!) plus
Brian Dwyer's 1979 baseball set. Is there anything like finishing THREEsets
at a cost of $2.50 ?

Hmm. This report is taking up as much time to write as it was to live. But
I promise I am almost done. Levi Bleam (707 Sports cards) occasionally makes
it to this show. My experiences with him have been mixed, which isprobably
better than the OBC average. If you looked up "notorious" in the
dictionary, you'd see his picture. He's given me the same deals everyone
else gets, but some how I seem to be able to find the ones I can live with.
Levi is notorious for buying up every '52 high number (and '52 MANTLE)
at a show and then marking it up 100% above the already high price someone
else has charged. The result is a truly-mind blowing inventory where you
can actually buy every single '52 Topps high number in one swell foop but
often you will pay FAR above what you are used to. A few years ago I got
all nine '52 Topps Red Sox high numbers for my Red Sox team card set at one
shot. I am still friendly with Levi though I hardly ever buy from himanymore.
When I needed to sell some sets, I didn't think about going to see
him which was my mistake. The sets I sold to one guy ended up with Levi.
You can count how many risk-free dollars I put in the first guys pocket.
*sigh* Anyway, for a lark, I thought I'd see if he had any Playball
Williams cards I can afford. I still need a '39 Playball Williams (Ted's
RC), '40 Playball Williams and '41 Playball Foxx to finish another stage of
my monster Red Sox collection. Its at 3 or 4 binders now, which is probably
5% of the size of Josh's Phillies collection, but I still think its impressive.

Well, Levi had a '40 Playball Williams that I couldn't pass up. For $200 I
got a card with a totally clean front, a square inch of paper missing from
the back and the rest of the back covered with paper and glue. Shortly I'll
start the process of restoring the card. I know some people like boiling
and soaking their cards to remove paper/glue but I prefer old fashioned
spit. I really don't like the idea of soaking the entire card and then having
to press it flat and hoping there is no other water damage. I'll have
to shop around (or ask for a scan) of the back so I can see what text I'm

Oops. One more buy I want to report.... The non-sport guy had a pile (about
30 or so) of '48 Bowman basketball that looked promising. I got a #1
for $10 and about 6 or 7 others for $5 each. When Andy Cook and Dan Austin
come over to my house tomorrow, I will let them fight over who can buythem
from me at that price.

So that's the end of this report -- the longest ever by someone who takes their
hat off in public. I hope you enjoyed reading it. I enjoyed writing
it (and living it). I do have a "post-show why did I spend all that money"
hangover but I only go to a show like this once a week. Ooops I meant
MONTH. So it was worth it.

So -- should I go to Pittsburg next week? Toronto in November? Just howout
of control can I become? Someone better take away my checkbook and my
keys. hahahaha

I've a few of the cans, but no Rice. Whenever, I've seen them, which isn't
often, they are pretty cheap though.

I think I had the Rice card. It was about 3x5, of newspaper, and a head
portrait drawing in black and white. I can't remember who I gave it too but
it was someone in OBC about 1 year ago.

Don't know anything about the Me Iron On's

I am inquiring if someone has information regarding the scarcity of the
1975 Boston Herald set and, 1978 RC Cola & Me Iron On's. I am pretty
close to completing my Jim Rice collection, except the proliferation of
bat/jersey cards by Fleer - they seem to have a Rice memorabilia card in
every set.

My primary medium for collecting is ebay, and I have not seen them
there. I am not sure exactly what form the Boston Herald is in. I
pulled the checklist from Beckett, which provides, incidently, a fairly
exhaustive list.

If anyone can provide a description of the Boston Herald set, and the
scarcity of the aboves sets, it would be appreciated.

I want to start a project to create a comprehensive (well, as much as we can
figure out) vintage Red Sox baseball checklist. Josh Levine has done this
for the Phillies. I know there is demand for one from Red Sox fans -- not
just me. If you are interested in helping with or benefitting from this
project, let me know. Anyone can help, whether you are a Red Sox fan or
not and whether you own the cards or not. All you need is a little bit of
time and perhaps some ingenuity. I have some ideas about how to do theresearch
but I don't think I can do this singlehandedly. I am sending this
message out to one Red Sox collector I know outside of OBC. If you know
of others, please ask if they want to be included in the project.

I hope to hear from a few eager Red Sox fans (and others).

The so-called "Canadian Goudeys" were actually put out by "World Wide Gum of
Montreal", which is printed on the back.

The 1933 Set (V353) is 94 cards, whose fronts are identical to their Goudey
counterparts. Cars 1-52 have the same numbering as the Goudey. #s 53-94
have a different numbering scheme. Cards are in either English or English
and French.

The 1934 (V354) set features 96 cards. Numbers 1-48 are similar to the 33
Goudey set and 49-96 have the "Lou Gehrig says" front. Player selection is
different from the America Goudeys.

The 1936 set (V355) has 134 cardds. The cards have b&w pictures on the
front with portrait and action photos. The players name is printers in a
white box on front. Like the 33 & 34 sets the backs say "World Wide Gum

1980 back to 1880 something... Not at all comprehensive - nor as
exhaustive as Josh's - Anyone who wants a copy is welcome....

Wouldn't it be great if we had a database on the website where we could
all go and put in the cards and teams for all the various sets we have
collected (actually in hand) or are SURE about... I'll bet that would be
a great start for anyone's Team Set... I know I put that information in
my Card Collector database for all the cards I have - and I'll bet that
most of you have ways you keep track of that as well - weather the cards
you have are from a team you 'collect' or not. Steve - is that at all
possible to do with the current set up we have on the website or....??

i have noticed in the past few weeks several emails regarding cards that were
missing from factory sets. i assume that these sets were sealed, and when
opened by the owner, it was discovered that a card was missing.

i had always assumed that sealed sets were worth more than "hand collated
sets", so i never bothered to break the seal and check for missing cards. so
i have two questions:

am i right in assuming that a sealed set is more valuable than a hand
collated set?

given that, should i still open the sets to make sure they are complete (i
guess if they are never opened no one would ever know if a card was missing)?

Sounds to me like Steve has a phanton...Instead of
merely haunting his house, he'll go through Steve's
cards and take one away...because he KNOWS it's going
to really screw with him!

Maybe he'll go away after Halloween.

Subject: ebay finds for a penny anyone?

Occasionally, cards on ebay will slip through for ridiculously low prices.
I'm sure we've all had our share of bargains resulting from whatever forces
are at work at that particular time. But, have you ever won any cards on
ebay for a penny? Now, I'm not talking about someone offering some card you
can find in a dollar bin at any show for .01 and then charging $5 for
shipping. I'm talking about cards you may have won for one cent with
reasonable (SASE, $1 or less, etc.) shipping costs. Me...I can remember
three such lots on ebay:

1) a 1972 OPC pitching leaders card with Carlton, Seaver and Jenkins
2) a two card lot: a 1967 Joe Morgan and a 1965 Willie McCovey
3) a 1962 Willie Mays All Star

I'm sure folks out there have some good penny finds so let's hear 'em!

Happy Collecting!

Hmmm...for a penny (not including s/h) i have only won three lots for a penny
and all in the early days of ebay...

1 lot of 22 1971 commons in vg or better condition. (this guy tried to make
up for it in s/h as he charged me $3 and sent it in a small white envelope
with a single stamp!!)

1 1968 Topps Steve Carlton (if i recall, the s/h was SASE)

1 T-206 bergen bklyn. (since given away to someone in the group).

i miss those days but every now and then i still get a wonderful bargain on
