I met a gentleman, Matt Meister, this afternoon who had just completed a course (don't know what kind) taught by former MLB catcher Tom Lunstedt, who played briefly for the Cubs in '73-'74 and then even more briefly for the '75 Twins (.092 batting average... ouch!). Matt was at a shop that mainly carries UV-infected stuff, and, of course, they couldn't help him. I thought that in the grand tradition of OBC, we could. He wants to send Tom a card to keep and another to get autographed for his son. I've checked my dupes bin and have come up dry. Any help? Tom's main cards are the '74 Topps and OPC, #603 (Rookie Catchers). Other than that, he was in a '73 Wichita Aeros J. P. Kelley bank, a '75 Twins Postcards set, a '75 Twins Team Issue set, and a '75 Tacoma Twins KMMO. Also, I thought that if any of you had recollections about Tom, Matt (and I) would love to hear them. Matt can be contacted via e-mail at pchefmeister@juno.com . Please cc: me a copy so I know when/if I can quit looking! The top corners come to points, the bottom two are rounded and somewhat layered. There is some edge notching, and some dirt on top border. The back has some goop on it (it may be glue from album removal) but very slight paper loss. Having just trashed this card let me say that the picture isn't bad and the color is bright. This card lists for $300.00 in NM. You can have it for $29.00 plus $2.00 for shipping. An opportunity to get a decent Robinson card without paying an arm and a leg. Grant was tending to his wife and her broken leg, Brian Lindholme was swamped with family and work duties, Todd couldn't make it, but Dave Fallen met with me (gave me some cards -- I had none for him), and, where the heck wasAl?! You can't have a spiritual experience without a spiritual leader.... But the night before --- my family and I drove to Kent, a little old town, now a suburb, just a bit north of Tacoma, to visit and stay overnight with our friend, Susan. We needed vittles long about 7 PM, so Susan suggested wego to the 'Caveman' -- their motto, you ask? "You choke 'em, we smoke 'em". It was definitely my kind of blue-collar, no ferns, no frills, eating establishment. The 1/2 smoked chicken I had was scary good, as were the bakedbeans, potato salad, coleslaw and garlic bread. Back at Susan's we watched"Dumb and Dumber". I almost wet my pants and had trouble breathing. What astupidly hilarious movie.... Next morning Trent and I drove the short trip to the Dome. I couldn't help but notice how Mt. Rainier was literally glowing -- it looked like a mound of glistening, shining ice-cream with whipped cream running down the sides -- hey, I didn't have room for dessert last night! The parking lot was lightly filled at 11 AM, but the usual suspects, I meandealers, were there. I beelined for Mark MacRae and paid for my pre-aranged cards. While I was there a guy walked up with 3 Butter Creme strips that had belonged to his Dad. Lefty O'Doul was one of them. Mark quickly explained to the guy what they were and bought them for $200. Later, while chatting with one dealer, the promoter, Dennis, came by to tell the dealer something. Mr. Mint's name came up and Dennis said that Mr. Mint was banned from all his future shows. What did he do, I asked. Well, Dennis said, he wanted only the front tables by the door at a show in '97. Dennis explained to Mr. Mint that they were already booked and gave him the guy's phone number tosee if he would switch tables with Mr. Mint, which the guy did. Mr. Mint was in a great mood when he got to the show, until he read the "Dealers Ratings" in Dennis' old magazine, 'Vintage Baseball'. Then he was in a sour mood, and stiffed Dennis for a grand in table/dealer fees! Whaddaguy, that Mr.Mint! I continued to make my rounds and enjoy the fellowship of fellow nutcases chasing cardboard, but could not find Al. (Al works the night shift at Boeing, he says, so perhaps he was sleeping in...). Around 3 PM Trent and I left, but the next Dome Show in November will have Tony LaRussa and the whole ARF gang (Animal Rescue Foundation), which puts out signed and game-used items for sale and also has an auction of the same kind of material. Wonder if they will have any Barry Bonds items?! How bout THAT guy? 63 and counting... I was fortunate enough to make it to a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train and get across the bay before they went into a reduced As it stands now I am expected to be at work in downtown San Francisco tomorrow morning. Many of our uniformed officers and agents are probably being deployed as I type. We had a large number of U. They were not in the two main towers that were destroyed and had offices in a smaller tower in the compound. I agree with all that has been said by Geordie and others and hope that our friends that must serve the public will be able to stay out of harms way. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: show and today's events Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 22:19:11 From: "Al Cummings" Fellow Americans and you too Grant, We were struck with a wake up call today, mine did wake me up as my Duaghter called me about 9:30 PDT and told me to turn on the news. I could clearly see the smoke from the fire there. I ride Metro to work, but heard the trains were closed. The roads were chocked with traffic so I decided I'd walk the 12 miles to my metro station (straight shot on one road, very few hills) and get my car and then try to pickup my wife at her office. Then I heard that a car bomb went off at the State Department (thankfully false report) which would be right along my route so I couldn't walk home. I then walked to my wife's office and we got a ride from her coworker to one of our friend's houses in Maryland which was much easier to get to than our house in VA. It took us two hours to go the ten miles to his house. My friend was home and anxiously waiting for word from his brother who lives and works in Manhattan. After we'd been there about two hours his brother called with an amazing story. He works construction and he and his crew had been working on the roof of a building ten blocks from the World Trade Center. They witnessed everything. They saw the planes impact the buildings. Thankfully they were all able to get home safe. After we finally got home I drove to the local blood bank and was very happy to see the line of doners was out the door. I'm on the standby list and expect to be called sometime tomorrow. I have a number of friends who work in the Pentagon and they're all safe. Now I'm worried about some of my coworkers who sit in a building adjacent to the World Trade Center -- no word yet. My hat is off to all the emergency personnel who are risking their lives to save these victims. They are heros. ================= To: Subject: Canadian Perspective Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 18:20:53 -0700 From: "Grant Rainsley" I don't think the words that I want to use have been invented yet. I am sick that normal everyday working people by the thousands won't be going home to their families. I think the world we knew before has just changed in a big way....forever. This event affected us here too....we had U.S. fighter aircraft escorting diverted flights into Vancouver, and as far as I'm concerned, they're welcome in our airspace anytime. I then knew something was seriously wrong. Mindy called around 10:30 PDT to tell us her and her best friend were just released from a makeshift hospital at Battery Park...appartently she was caught in the debris cloud from the first tower collapse and had some dust inhalation and a few cuts and bruises from running away in a panic. This act is just sick and wrong...I spent the day ignoring it as best as I could at work but even the kids felt something was wrong. Tomorrow is going to be hell at work. It is a K-8 school and following the disastrous news of the day we decided to release the children early to be with their families. Most of the children were dazed and confused (tomorrow will be worse) with a mirriod of emotions from complacency to hysteria. I guess where I'm going with this is please talk to your school age children if you already haven't and assure them that despite today's tragedy we still live in one of the safest places on earth. That they are safe in their schools and we all feel their sense of confusion over the days events. We all have things to sort out over the coming days but let's spare our children some of the gory details. Love em, hug em and talk to them but please don't scare them anymore than they are already, that just feeds into what these terrorist want. I pray for our nation and its people, that we learn from this experience and once again show the world why this is the greatest country on earth. That the justice that we seek comes swiftly and at little cost of human life, we have already paid too high a price. I don't know how many of you folks have been to the world trade center, but the pictures you see on television do not come close to showing how massive those two structures were. Behemoth sized. I remember thinking 8 years ago when the last bomb hit the parking garage that if either of these buildings ever came tipping over, the losses would be well over 100,000 people. As strange as it sounds, I thank God that the architects did a great job of designing those buildings that they came straight down, like the building imploded for demolition. It's extremely bad there now, it could have been much much worse. I still haven't heard from any of my customers that work in the area or any of the people I deal with from companies like Compaq. Maybe we're a sick bunch, but many here after all this has settled in would look in whoever is responsible's face and say "is that the best you got? F--- Y--! We will find you and we WILL kick your ass". We will mourn our losses, clean up the mess. I'm sure we will rebuild the towers and go forward. Quite a disgusting claim to make in light of the fact that 2 of the hijacked flights originated in Boston. Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 16:06:32 +0100 From: Glenn Codere My friends, While in the course of grieving/praying/assisting those persons who have been caught up in the tragic events of yesterday, I'd like to ask you to please spare a moment and a thought for a very dear friend of mine. My best friend Martin and his wife Eileen went on vacation to Ireland last week. Eileen was struck down with cancer last year, but after a major operation and a long series of chemotherapy treatments, she had returned to work and was back to her usual bright and cheery self. The vacation was their first break from things since the illness. While travelling through Sligo, Eileen started experiencing severe headaches. On arriving at the local hospital, she was soon diagnosed as having viral meningitis, and was quickly transferred to a specialist unit in Dublin. Her condition rapidly deteriorated over the next few days, and after suffering a series of strokes which resulted in her brain activity falling to a minimal level, Martin and her doctors made the heartbreaking decision to withdraw treatment this morning. Eileen died at 1pm. She was only 38 years old. I've known Martin and Eileen since school days. I'm finding it particularly difficult to come to terms with this as she is the first of my peers to pass away. I'm also finding difficult the fact that I'm unable to be there for my buddy in his time of need. In addition to his sorrow, in order to bring Eileen home, Martin needs to cope with the difficulties of travel which are currently being imposed in the light of yesterday's events. He is taking things extremely badly. I realise that Eileen's is only one life compared to the 10's of thousands lost yesterday, but in my time in OBC, I've come to realise that this group has a lot of love and compassion to spread around. I ask for just a little to be directed this way today. TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television Commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. When I drive home from work each day, right after I get off the highway exit about 10 blocks from my house, I catch a very clear view of the WTC twin towers. I used to use that view to gauge the day's air quality by how clear the buildings appear. Tuesday I got home via a different route as the highways were closed. I knew I could drive the 10 blocks and see the altered skyline but I just didn't have the hearts. Yesterday I was able to take my regular routes and got off the usual exit and there it was right in front of my eyes, the familiar towers gone, replaced by a constant plume of smoke. Today, we could also smell the smoke as the wind changed direction. The thought that saddened me was that brick and mortar buildings can be replaced eventually, but the lives of those perished are gone forever. We often refer to baseball and other sports stars as heroes. But the true heroes in real life are those that gave their lives to help save others. It brought tears to my eyes as I heard and read recounts from survivors: How they remember walking past scores of firemen going UP the stairs as they are coming down to safety. Figuratively speaking, these firefighters were indeed going UP, to Heaven that is, where their brave souls shall rest. One senior fire official was 71 years old. He could've been retired long time ago, but he was right there at the forefront when the building collapsed. Talk about being a hero or a martyr. What do the terrorists know about the true meaning of those words. Here's a thank you and a salute to all the uniformed personnel and those others involved in the rescue efforts. ================= Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 19:01:52 EDT Subject: Second try ..you'll want to see this To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Traderdoug@aol.com ================= Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 20:36:07 EDT Subject: Our UK friends To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: GHAY1@aol.com Not sure how many of you have seen the video of the Buckingham Palace guards band playing the Star Spangled Banner in front of many teary-eyed spectators outside of the palace gates, but talk about an emotional sight!!! In order to avoid busy buses and heavy traffic, I normally set off for work about 7am, usually arriving between 7:30 and 7:45. Most mornings, I am one of the first to arrive. After preparing a pot of coffee and pouring myself a cup, I sat down at my computer and composed a short message which I emailed not only to all in my own organisation, but also to everyone in the other 4 companies/organisations within our building. The message was a simple one, reminding people that this day had been declared a National Day of Mourning, and asking them to congregate outside in front of the building at 11am, in order to observe a 3 minute silence as a mark of respect to all those affected by Tuesday's tragedy. I wandered outside about 6 or 7 minutes to 11. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but a few short minutes later people started to stream out of the building. I'm so proud to say that the full staff compliment of every organisation in the building joined together in a solemn, and dignified silence. I took a moment to look around me. Employees in other nearby offices had also stepped outside. Cars and buses pulled over and stopped for a moment. In the windows of offices across the street, I could see many others standing, heads bowed. It was quite a moment. On speaking to some of my colleagues afterwards, many commented on how much the silence had focussed their thoughts on the tragedy. The terrific turnout made them realise just how much everyone around them has been touched by these horrific events. My initial reponse was muted, that this was to be expected, but that quickly subsided. As a Christian, there are a couple of thoughts I want to share. Though we take comfort in the David's Shepherd Psalm (Psalm 23) The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. And other scriptures in both the Old and New Testaments such as, Psalm 27:1-3 : The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident. I can't help but think my own negligence as a Christian, in my prayer life, in sharing the Gospel, and in not standing up for the values and absolute truth that I believe has contributed to our decline as a nation. I think of the verses below that we need to heed if we are to pray to God for comfort, assistence, and healing. Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will not hear. I pray that the Lord protect our soldiers, law enforcement, firemen, and medical professionals within and outside our group. These men and women are doing heroic work that renders the athletics we all admire insignificant. More importantly, I pray that we pay attention to what is pleasing to God, and not to our own fickle desires and do those things. We have kicked God out of our schools, businesses, and society in general. I pray that He we have not so offended Him, that we can again become one nation under God. ================= Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 19:19:48 EDT Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] FYI To: TPLY@aol.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: mikesportsfan@aol.com This commentary is actually a few years old. In fact, I believe the author passed away last year. It is often played (with music, America the Beautiful, if I recall, in the background) on a radio station in the Detroit area. Naturally, it has been getting replayed a lot this week. Some things do not go out of style, but some things do. Although much of what is in the commentary is still true, I have been heartened to see many countries step up and offer assistance to the US due to this tragedy. Countries as close as Canada, to Britain, Russia and China, among others. As has been said, it is a shame it takes a tragedy to bring us together, but if these terrible acts, bring the world community closer, and get us to work together, at least the deaths will not be in vain. ================= To: Subject: Tragedy thoughts Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 17:07:41 -0700 From: "Diamanti" Well Guys: It was only a week ago I was gearing up for a big card show and enjoying writing to you all about it. Since Tuesday I have been in a fog, barely able to do any work, barely able to keep from snapping at my kids, then feeling guilty when I did. My grief wouldn't come until today...... I and my wife, who works at home on Friday, watched the National Service together on TV from Washington D.C. and were moved to tears. A muslim cleric, a rabbi, a cardinal, Billy Graham, two other ministers, and finally, President Bush -- they all offered their thoughts and feelings. My wife suggested that we pick up the kids from school at their lunch break and take themto downtown Coupeville, where local residents were to gather in front of City Hall (a one-story building, barely noticeable) for a rather spontaneousremembrance for any who could make it. In our little podunk, hokey town, a small platform was decorated with red, white and blue. NAS Whidbey, the Naval Air Station, provided a four person color guard that presented the colors. A retired minister spoke, reading a strangely appropriate poem from an Irish poet. Local ambulances sounded their sirens to honor the fallen firefighters, police and EMT personnel. The church across the street rang its bell. There was a long moment of silence. Then the assembled 100 or so of us, sang "America the Beautiful", and two other patriotic songs. I have never been a fan of what I call in-your-face-patriotism. I'm not a flag waver or overly active in the philosophy that Americans are number 1 just because we are Americans. I've always felt that patriotism should be a private belief -- that those who trumpeted the red white and blue were obnoxious. I no longer feel that way. As the tears kept coming for the dead, injured and their families, I realized that it is OK to publicly demonstratepatriotism, just as it is OK to demonstrate emotion and tears and feelingspublicly. It is absolutely OK to feel and express all the feelings we, asAmericans, are feeling during these dark days. The other thing that comes through loud and clear to me is a reminder abouthow to handle ourselves as we finish mourning our dead. I once had a fabulous college teacher who was a Greek Cypriot and head of the Modern Greek Studies Dept. at the University of Minnesota. During the Greek/Turkish War on Cyprus, his mother's home was trashed, but she came through unharmed. After he flew to Cyprus and arrived at her home, the home he grew up in, and saw the destruction perpetrated by the Turkish soldiers, he said that he hadone fervent prayer running through his mind. It was -- "Dear God, do not let me become bitter over this." That is my prayer -- that all of us Americans will not choose bitterness during this crisis. That we will enforce justice, yes, but will refuse to stoop to any kind of deliberate violence based on ignorance, rascism, bigotry or misguided anger. We owe that to the dead and injured, and it raises ourpatriotism to new heights -- it allows us the clear knowledge that we are acting honorably, justly and in a righteous manner. I am certain that we all are helping our fellow Americans in ways we deem best -- contributing money, blood, time, resources, etc. I would further personalize this by saying that if any one of our OBC membership needs ANY help or assistance, they need only ask and it shall be given. Glenn Codere is obviously suffering a great loss by losing such a close friend. I wish Icould be with you personally, Glenn, to offer you something. You and those you love are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope anyone else who needs OBC help will come forward and make a request. I have a service buddy who lives in Queens and works in the financial district of NYC. I have not been able to reach him yet. I pray that he is all right. I also thank Grant for his Canadian support and thanks to all who have written to Ramblings and Thanks groups expressing themselves. You can't beat the people in this country, you really can't. as it stands, my company, Marsh and McLennan, had 1700 people who worked in the twin towers and another 100 who were visiting from our midtown office. the count of people who have not checked in stands at 342, down considerably from initial estimates we heard of 1200 missing, but horrific in scope still. this number hasn't changed in 36 hours so 342 dead looks to be the number for us. i knew about 50 people in the Trade Center, from my firm and some others. Nine or Ten of them survived as near as I can tell. Our entire NYC back office is destroyed. The group that moved into our space on the 100th floor were at ground zero in tower one. We have only heard of one person from our company who worked in tower one and was there when the plane hit that got out. it sounds like she dove into a stairwell on 98 and got below the fireball before the staircases disintegrated. Very, very soon revenge and justice will mean the same thing and the countries that harbor these bastards (to call them animals insults every pet I've ever had, every creature I've ever seen in a zoo or in the wild) will choke on their tears--I think most people have no idea how decisive the US response will be. The world will be shocked again I believe and will not be outraged. 5,000 families would go in on their own to get Bin Laden right now and I suspect the Armed Forces will be more lenient with him than those families would. see ya soon, pal. ================= Date: 15 Sep 2001 07:14:09 -0000 From: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Poll results for OBC-Ramblings The following OBC-Ramblings poll is now closed. You can't buy a U.S. flag anywhere....completely sold out. The Stars and Stripes are flying beside the Maple Leaf all over the place, including my house, and many many others. It's a wonderful thing to see. Yesterday's Canucks game was cancelled, so this afternoon they are having an intra-squad game. All proceeds from ticket sales are going directly to the American Red Cross, as well as extra donations they will be accepting at the game. I've purchased my tickets already, and I'm taking Kate with me. I suspect she is about to learn the words to the Star Spangled Banner, and maybe even God Bless America. It should be a full house. I think Jeff is the last of the NYC group to check in. Has anyone heard from I talked to Jeff via IM the other night. He's had both school and work cancelled for a few days, so I'm not sure why he hasn't checked in here... he's had plenty of time :-) He is safe though, I'm happy to say. While I'm typing this up, I might as well give a quick show report. This weekend, I took some time to check out the Suffolk Down show nearby. I wasn't sure if there was going to be a show, since it was supposed to be a three day show with 250 tables... meaning dealers would be coming from all parts of the country, as well as some autograph guests of note. Not only that, but Logan airport had about 1500 cars towed to the show location to help comply with new security regulations. (Turns out that the parking lot holds 6000 cars, so it didn't even look crowded... and also most of the cars had been claimed after a couple days.) Earlier this week, I got an IM from one of the dealers I know saying he was driving up from Miami for it and that the promoter had contacted him to tell him it was still on. A friend of mine also left a message on the promoter's machine and told me he got a call back and it wasn't cancelled. Ron Wheeler (The Auction Solution) left a message on MY machine saying he was going to be in town too. So by Wed. I was pretty sure what I'd be doing this weekend, since all major sporting events were already cancelled. The show probably wasn't as big as originally planned (I was expecting something similar to Ft. Washington or the Shriners show that's here in November). The show was about evenly split between vintage material and shiny stuff. I managed to hit a few of my BKB sets, got a low grade complete 1965-66 OPC hockey set (Orr RC) and shaved a few more off the 67 set along with a 56 Killer (white back) ....all from the aforementioned Mr. Wheeler. There was even a flipping contest today (which I should've participated in, but I was busy buying stuff I can't mention here) I've got a couple cards for anyone interested - if you've read this far without dozing off, you deserve something. FCFS (unless you're really close to finishing the set or something. Then I might changed my mind if you have a good enough story ): 1948 Bowman #4 Mize 1953 Bowman B/W #'s 38 and 48 I also picked up two 'Dealer Scum' specials if you have any leftover money after sending some to help out NY: 1968 Ryan RC (tipton) for $90 and 1961 Mantle MVP (VG or so) for $35. I figured I'd offer them up here before throwing them to the eBay sharks. I also did the unspeakable (so why am I telling you all now?) - I got some cards graded from SGC at the show. These were from a group of RC's I bought at the National in July and will probably be in an auction in the near future too. Anyway, that's all I can think of for now. Nice to know that hockey is back in town though. Vancouver is a rabid hockey town, no better words for it. They didn't announce the attendance, but I'd guess it was around 13,000. Last season when the Canucks were getting killed by Colorado in the playoffs, I heard the U.S. anthem booed here in Vancouver, and I heard the Canadian anthem booed in Denver. This afternoon, I heard around 13,000 Canadians singing the Star Spangled Banner, then in louder voices our own anthem. The moment of silence was just exactley that...amazing how quiet 13,000 people can be. They announced at the end of the first period that over $130,000 for the American Red Cross had been raised from this crowd so far, and said they weren't going to be happy unless it hit $200,000. The wives of the Canucks were going up and down the aisles extorting money, and doing a fine job of it. The first is a move from my current place of employment in Malden to a brand new store in Everett. No pay hike or position change as far as I know... nor a time frame of when it'll happen (probably in the next couple weeks though, since the store is opening in November sometime.) My store manager has vowed to fight to keep me where I am - and where I'd like to stay, but it may be a done deal. It's also coming up on my 18th ann. of work this week. Aside from about 5 years of moving around (or being laid off), I've been in the same building I started in all that time - within walking distance of my house. So even though the new store is in my home town, it's actually further away from me. The other event that will see me moving is a vacation I put in for at the beginning of the year. Originally it was so I could attent the Ft. Washington show this weekend, but the Patriots home schedule conflicted with it for the first time in a couple years. (I guess it was way overdue for that to happen.) I will probably drive somewhere just to get away from here for a few days, but as of this minute I have no idea where that 'somewhere' is. Here's more cards for you to claim - don't be shy. Most of the cards I put up for grabs yesterday are still available too. 1953 Topps 128, 134 and 152 1967 Topps 423 1968 Topps 215 and 310 I've included the creases and dinged corners at no extra charge. Actually, it's more of a 'made for TV' story... well, it's not that either. Maybe the review will let you know more: CARD TREK II: The Wrath of Ken Cards - a fairly well known frontier. These are the voyages of the starship OBC. It's continuing mission: to seek out pieces of beat up cardboard, to explore bargain bins and discount boxes, to boldly pay lower prices than anyone has ever before. Now the main character in this episode was once well known for sending out many packages, many of which contained very hard to find and/or expensive cards. However, recently this OBC'er was thought to be in (an almost self appointed) exile. The communication level had dropped off sharply compared to things when he was first encountered. This chapter in the journey deals with his somewhat vengeful return to the active status he once enjoyed. This feature co-stars about 90 other people (at last count), so they won't all be mentioned here. They come from all over the card collecting galaxy - some from a strange place called 'Canada'. I suspect more of the critics' reviews will be pouring in shortly on the 'Thanks' server. This saga begins... actually, it started a couple days ago, so hopefully it should be coming soon to a theatr... er, mailbox near you. This film has been rated G or G/VG in some cases. I'm giving it two thumbs up and throwing in a stick of gum too. That's all the time we have for today. So until next time, the balcony is closed... but the bleachers are still open. The following is from a letter by a professional friend and her return flight to D.C. this week. "I just wanted to drop you all a note and let you know that I arrived safe and sound into Dulles Airport tonight [9/15] at about 6:00. It was an interesting flight. The airport in Denver was almost spooky, it was so empty and quiet. No one was in line for the security check point when I got there so that went fairly quickly, just x-ray of my bags and then a chemical test to be sure nothing explosive was on them. Then I waited 2 1/2 hours to board the plane. What happened after we boarded was interesting and thought I would share it with you. The pilot/captain came on the loudspeaker after the doors were closed. Hisspeech went like this: First I want to thank you for being brave enough to fly today. The doors are now closed and we have no help from the outside for any problems that might occur inside this plane. As you could tell when you checked in, the government has made some changes to increase security in the airports. They have not, however, made any rules about what happens after those doors close. Until they do that, we have made our own rules and I want to share them with you. Once those doors close, we only have each other. The security has taken care of a threat like guns with all of the increased scanning, etc. Then we have the supposed bomb. If you have a bomb, there is no need to tell me about it, or anyone else on this plane; you are already in control. So, for this flight, there are no bombs that exist on this Now, the threats that are left are things like plastics, wood, knives, and other weapons that can be made or things like that which can be used as Here is our plan and our rules. If someone or several people stand up and say they are hijacking this plane, I want you all to stand up together. Then take whatever you have available to you and throw it at them. Throw it at their faces and heads so they will have to raise their hands to protect The very best protection you have against knives are the pillows and blankets. Whoever is close to these people should then try to get a blanket over their head--then they won't be able to see. Once that is done, them down and keep them there. Do not let them up. I will then land the plane at the closest place and we WILL take care of them. After all, there are usually only a few of them and we are 200+ strong! We will not allow them to take over this plane. I find it interesting that the US Constitution begins with the words "We, the people"--that's who we are, THE people and we will not be defeated. With that, the passengers on the plane all began to applaud, people had tears in their eyes, and we began the trip toward the runway. The flight attendant then began the safety speech. One of the things she said is that we are all so busy and live our lives at such a fast pace. She asked that everyone turn to their neighbors on either side and introduce themselves, tell each other something about your families and children, show pictures, whatever. She said "for today, we consider you family. We will treat you as such and ask that you do the same with us." Throughout the flight we learned that for the crew, this was their first flight since Tuesday's tragedies. It was a day that everyone leaned on each other and together everyone was stronger than any one person alone. It was quite an experience. You can imagine the feeling when that plane touched down at Dulles and we heard "welcome to Washington Dulles Airport, where the local time is Again, the cabin was filled with applause. Last night I saw a program with college students where one of them said that at their campus there are no more hyphenated titles, i.e., African-American, etc., everyone is just an American. No one will ever be able to take that pride away from us. This entire subject of the Frank Sullivan 1955 Topps variations came up through Ramblings in OBC. Leonard's wrote me in response to my article that describes the three 1955 Sullivans as coming with or without a dotted "i" as well as a dot off-center. If any of you have the 2 variations Laurence describes, I would appreciate you letting me know. George Vrechek Here is Leonard's note: Hi George, To pick up on our correspondence about the 1955 Sullivan variations, I can not only confirm one additional partially obliterated dot version but also a second, that is, one more than I mentioned to you a couple of days ago. Here are the totals and variation descriptions that I have found. (1) full dot version, as shown in your SCD article. The dot runs at a diagonal and is somewhat teardrop-shaped. (2) no dot version, as also shown in your article. (3) the partially obliterated dot version shown in your SCD article. You mention that it seems like it is further on the right than the full dot version. What struck me is that it has a bit more of a horizontal angle than the clearly diagonal full dot version. (4) a partially obliterated dot that looks like the "head" of the dot of the full dot version. Specifically, it looks like someone took the full dot version shown in your article, and started removing ink from the bottom up. But the part that remains looks exactly like the top of the full dot. Evan the diagonal angle looks right. (5) one more partially obliterated dot version that probably doesn't warrant the description "partially obliterated." If we didn't know about alterations of the dot, we wouldn't think twice about this one. In fact, the dot is rather large. However, unlike the more common full dot, this dot is closer to being round. It is not as long as the common full dot version, but -- and here is the mystery -- it looks like it is a bit wider than the full dot version. I keep asking myself if this is an optical illusion. It is easier for me to imagine that Topps didn't like the full dot version and made three different attempts to change its appearance (before removing it altogether), each time starting with the full dot version. Possible this last version involves only removing the tail of the original full dot and that somehow the result merely LOOKS like a completely original dot. But the greater width of this one makes me think that it could have been the result of adding something rather than merely removing something.See what you think. I just purchased one more of these on eBay and the scan is still available. Go into eBay and Search under item number. The item number is: 1008048541. I now have two of each of these five versions. Let me know what you think. ================= Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 21:13:17 EDT Subject: Ebay Script Error To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: amcook93@aol.com For the past 10 days I've gotten a script error every time I've gone to Ebay, and on every single page within Ebay. Votes by email will not count anymore. In 2 minutes you can sign up for a Yahoo ID & vote in the poll. It'd be a shame for a team to lose in the poll yet they would have won if the email votes had counted. So please sign up & vote the right way. All the teams listed above got at least 3 votes & advanced. The 2 biggest suprises in my opinion were: The Cubs (I never knew we had so many Cub fans here) & the Yankees (zero votes?). I dislike the Yankees but I thought several of you loved them. Oh well, I hope somebody does a LEAST FAV current team, so I won't have to (hint). Of course it is possible that a team could finish in the top 3 (or even win) as FAVORITE "AND" LEAST FAVORITE. If it was a player poll, for example, Pete Rose & John Rocker might get several votes in both polls. BTW, the max # of choices in a poll is 25 so that's why I had to split the 2 leagues to get us started.
