Of the nearly 300 cards in the pile, probably only about 2 are on my wantlist. I may get real ambitious and start the 58s, or maybe I'll think smaller and just do a few team sets. So far, I have been trying the "steam" method to get them off the paper with good results. I am getting 54 Bowmans that look "mint" on the front (well, at least they look mint to me, they're better than any I ever see) but have clear glue residue on the back. The writing on the back is all legible, you can't see the glue unless you tilt it in the light. Unfortunately, the 58s (and there are a ton of them) are all "two-sided" in the scrapbook. I fear that the steam method may not suffice, I may have to take more drastic action. Several of you have suggested methods, I may try them all. I enjoyed meeting lots of OBC members at the National, actually the first that I have met in person. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the swap session - my friend brought his 14-year old nephew, and he was ready to go home in the way that only 14-year olds can be ready to go home. If I had brought him to the swap, I'm sure none of you would have ever spoken to me again. Anyway, when I'm all done I'm sure lots of these will be going out into you binders - so wish me luck.... ================= Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 22:44:19 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: The First National Swap Report From: mikesportsfan@aol.com Time constraints will not allow a complete and total report, however, I would like to acknowledge some of the goings on at the National Swap session Saturday nite. Attendees included: Myself (Mike Rich), Steve Rittenberg, Ken Morganti, Spike Glidden, Kent Goto, Bob Reed, Terry Dietrick, Ron Perry, Sean (and William) McGowan, Doug Smith, Brett Domue (and his father) and Tim Newcomb. My sincerest apologies if I missed anyone. Prior to Saturday (the day I arrived for the show) I had only met 1 OBCer previously. So this was all a bit overwhelming. Instead of having people read off their wantlists and having people throw cards at them, people read off cards they wanted to get rid of, and people would claim them (similar to the waiver wire concept). It was virtually impossible for me to keep up with looking/sorting through a box of Steve's OPC BB, whil constantly yelling NEED IT NEED IT. Someone I managed, as I claimed and was rewarded with an incredible amount of material. Thanks are due to all, including Kevin Savage (an OBC friendly dealer) who sponsored our swap session, with pizza money if I am correct. Special thanks go to the following: William McGowan, our youngest attendee who was able to complete my only set completed at the swap session with a 19XX (year deleted to protect thosse allergic to UV) Score BB Greatest Moment 3D set, with the last card. William also had the easiest wantlist to hit. He wanted every item offered, but Sean would not let us fulfill his wishes. William did leave with some cards however. CArds came from too many angles too quickly to be sure who provided exactly what, so I apologize for any omissions or undeserved credit which may follow: Sean McGowan for a 1933 Goudey of a Minniapolis Miller (never heard of them before) and some 1973 Topps Team BB checklists. Tim Newcomb for 3 1950 Bowman, a 1952 Topps, 1948 Bowman and a T-206 Mullin (a Tiger). You must read about Tim's T-206 story. I will save that for him to tell. Ken for 1950 Bowman Brett Domue for stacks of stuff including 1951 Topps Blueback, 1950 Bowman, 1953 Topps and Parkhurst Hockey, plus some other abused cards. Nights biggest direct trade I think goes to Brett for agreeing to swap me a 1953 Bowman Pee Wee Reese rookie and a 1952 Topps high number for a 1953 Bowman Stan Musial. None of the cards were mint, but I still think I came out WAY ahead. Thank you Brett for making that 53 Bowman set seem that much more obtainable. Kent Goto, whose dupe box took a licking while filling in my upgrade lists to mid 60s Topps BB. Steve had been saving stuff just for me, including old hockey, OPC BB and a 1954 Blue Ribbonn CFL card. Steve did not know it, but the commons go for $100 and this was a minor star (BV $200). Of course I was the only one in the room who had ever seen one of these (I now have 3 in the set of 100). At least I was able to due major damage to Steve's new hockey lists. Just about everyone cleaned out their dupe box when I announced that I had no 1975 Topps at all. That I had sold the set I had when I went to grad school and had never replaced it. I picked up close to 200 cards. All contributions to this set are welcome and I will get around to putting up a wantlist on my OBC list eventually. Doug Smith, had no takeres on his 1955 Doubleheader dupes, but I eagerly grabbed 3 T-206s from him, among other goodies. Got to go more later and this was only the swap session, not even about the show. On Friday morning, drove 6 hours and was dropped off at the show by my wife and three daughters. Got in around 11:30 after a short wait in line for the free UV. Found some cheap T206's and a sought after (one of the last two I needed) T200 St Louis Americans for only $75!! Some black scrapbook paper on the back but well worth it. Ran into Ken Morganti around 4:00 who advised me of the 6:00 OBC rendevous. Did a little more shopping and located a reasonable NY Americans T200 for $350 with pencil on the back but for some reason I just didn't want to pull the trigger....... maybe I didn't want to put the set to bed after all??? Met the guys at the appointed time and location. Saw some familiar faces ..... Brett Domue and his dad, Kent Goto and the aforementioned Mr. Morganti. Plus met some of the guys for the first time .... Steve Ritteneberg, Tim Newcomb and Spike Glidden. Sure hope I didn't leave any one out !! Dropped off a contribution to the next evening's swapfest and picked up some nice cards from Brett and Steve... THANKS GUYS !!!!! Then it was time for the guys to head off to the Indians game and me to try to get in the rest of the show in 45 minutes. Further successes in the last 45 minutes ..... after a frantic search I relocated the table with the NY AL T200 and got him down to $300 and FINISHED MY T200 SET !!!!!!!!!!!! Also picked up an E120 Tiger.... these seem to be harder to find than the T200's. I think I've found my next major project!! Had a great time and enjoyed meeting the guys especially. Looking forward to other reports. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Fwd: Would like to trade some Sports Cards Date: Tue, 03 Jul 2001 01:59:43 From: "jeff sinclair" thought i'd pass this along if anyone is interested. do you remember the feel of the candy store steps? >From: Mike Kosonovich >To: suzguy11@hotmail.com >Subject: Would like to trade some Sports Cards >Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 19:26:00 -0600 >Greetings OBC member > I'm not a sports card collector, yet. I have been dealing with a good dealer on Ebay. I learned they are going through some things but still do everything they can to serve the buyer. A few months ago, Jesse started collecting baseball cards, and I gave him all the extras I could find. As I seem to be getting closer and closer to finishing my t-205 set (less than 50 to go!) I have been trying to pay less and not give into temptation and spend more. Lately on ebay a lot of notice is being paid to the backs of the t-205 set and sellers are putting premiums and trumpeting backs as rare. After working with set for nearly 5 years I have come to question some of the standards. I recently talked to some prominent vintage dealers including tik and tik, kit young cards, and lew lipsett. Not to mention gathering some info from some older magazines and reports (including vbbc, encyclopedia of baseball cards, and back issues of scd). Not to mention just talking with other t-205 collectors and dealers. And here is what I have found out. One more aside, lately people claim that Polar bear has two colors, blue and light blue. In looking at these cards, I tend to disagree. They are the same font, factory, color. Some are just either faded, or not printed enough. It is not a noticeable color difference as with Sweet Caporal or Broadleaf. First...let us look at my near complete set's back population report. Piedmont 43 Polar Bear 31 Hassan 22 Honest Long Cut 21 Sweet Cap Red 19 Sweet Cap Black 17 Soverign 14 Cycle 5 American Beauty 3 Broadleaf black 2 Broadleaf brown 1 Hindu 1 Drum 1 180 Total cards. Now this may be misleading...the t-205 set is rare in that certain cards only come with certain backs. All minor leaugers come with a hassan back. So, over the last year I kept a tally of only common cards being sold on ebay, shows and local shops...here is that population report. Piedmont 164 Sweet Cap Red 97 Honest Long Cut 90 Sweet Cap Black 89 Polar Bear 81 Hassan 68 Soverign 29 Cycle 18 American Beauty 17 Broadleaf brown 5 Broadleaf black 5 Hindu 2 Drum 1 Total 676 common cards. I think this is more accurate. And a little disturbing when you look at price guides and dealer selling points. Most sources list Piedmont correctly as the most common. No arguments there. Then they list the Sweet Cap cards as second most but they do not split them into two colors (if they do not split them, Sweet Cap then takes over the most common spot). But when you split them into the two distinct groups, something happens. The Honest Long cut back jumps to third. Most dealers put a very small premium on this back. I feel that this should not be the case. When you look at the next on the list there is a large problem with the price guides and dealers selling polar bear backs. In the T-205 set, Polar Bear is much more common than in the T-206 set. In fact most guides and dealers set a 10-30% premium on the T-205 Polar Bear Back. I think this is way off base. I would venture to say at most a 10% premium could be charged. Polar Bear is much more common than the other rare backs in the set. Hassan is tough to find. As evidenced by the Minor Leaugers who are found with the hassan backs, commons are tough to find with this back. In my set, Soverign is more common but in the wider report, it seems that it is as rare as the guides and dealers think. Cycle and American Beauty are comparable. Both are rare. Both are tough. Now the Broadleaf backs are tough as well. There is a convention that the black one is slightly rarer but it seems from my set and report that they are about equal. Broadleaf often gets the same premium as a hindu but I feel that this should not happen. I have seen many broadleafs (at least 13) and nearly no Hindus. Speaking of Hindu, these are rarer than their t-206 counterparts. I have seen 100% premium charged for this and I think that is accurate and maybe a little conservative. Now the Drum...up until 1984, Drum was theorized and rumored but was not truely found until 1985 when one went up for public auction. Even then, some people thought it a reprint. In 1990, Drum brand backs were found in a very small stash in New York (less than 20). I was actually surprised, as about a month ago, a Drum back was sold on ebay. A common that actually went for about 7 times book value (700% markup). I actually feel that this is accurate and was a slight bargain. The card was beat to death and still drew four figures. Draw whatever conclusions you want from the above. Just an excercise for me this summer. Please do let me know if you found anything interesting about the backs or if I missed something (I am sure I did). ================= To: Subject: T-205 Backs Date: Wed, 4 Jul 2001 14:07:31 -0700 From: "Geno Wagner" Fellas -- I just emailed Josh telling him I wish I had time to look at my T-205 backs, when all of a sudden the wife took my son out to lunch and the baby feel asleep! Also, the Cycles and Sovereigns are reversed in order of rarity for us. Honest Long Cut is high on Josh's list, but falls behind Cycle on mine. My first post was of the trading session only. This post shall tell a little about the show. I had hoped to make it to Cleveland on Friday, but work prevented my going until Saturday morning. I left Detroit around 6:00 am with the hope of meeting up at the hotel where some of the OBCers were staying and going to the show together. I realized I would miss the appointed time of 9:00 and called to let them know I would meet them at the IX Center. As it turns out I beat them there. Steve arranged to "sneak" a few of us in. This was to save time, more than money, as some of us kicked in $10 to a charity for getting us in early. I had let some of the guys know a few items I was looking for (specifically Coke caps) and was rewarded when we walked in by being told a few dealers who had them (Brett Domue also bought a stack of them for me from one dealer and presented them to me at the swap session). The show had 22 aisles. Normally when i attend a multi- day show I try to check out what the dealers have that I like and not buy anything the first day, unless it is a knock out price. This show was so big I was not sure I would be able to get back to tables if I skipped on buying on Saturday, so I did a fair amount of purchasing the first day. I found 1 dealer who had some nice looking 1953 Bowmans (B & W & Color) for $6 ($10 for Color high numbers). Since I purchased a lot, he did not charge me extra for some of the mini-stars, card #1, etc., and then gave me another 15-20% discount. I ended up with about 40 cards from that 1 dealer. (I ended up with some dupes of mini-stars that are now available for trade for my needs in 1948-1953 Bowman BB). I wsa working my way from aisle 21 down to aisle 16 when I noticed some dealers covering their tables. I wsa surpriised that they would break for lunch, afterall, Saturday is the biggest day for the public at the show and it is only open for 8 hours. I was even more surprised when the person next to me told me it was 5:50 and the show closed in 10 minutes (I had thought is was about 12:30 - 1:00). Needless to say I was in trouble with only finishing 6 of 22 aisles on Saturday. Sunday, I resolved to fly through the other tables. The resolve lasted until 10:15, when I found a table with a ton of unsorted vintage material. I spent the next 45 minutes at that 1 table. I did find some good stuff, but probably would have been better off, hitting more of the show. Ran into Steve at a table and ended up lewaving with a starter stack of 50 of the 74 1964 Wheaties FB Stamps (including almost all of the stars), a couple of FB matchbook covers and a couple of 1961 Nu-Card Scoops I needed (I am down to 5 in that set). The show closed at 5:00 on Sunday and I left at 5:30 to eat and drive home. I am still trying to sort and put everything away that I picked up this weekend. Meeting all of the other OBCers and hte swap session still ranked above the show. Many of the dealers would not "deal", even if you bought quantity. Other dealers were over priced. I found the last 3 1972 Fleer Harlem Globetrotter cards I needed, but the dealer wanted $5 each. I was expecting to pay $5 total. I passed even though it would have finished the set. I did find the last FB milk carton card (Ozzie Newsom) to finish that set, plus William McGowan finishing my Score Great Moments 3D set. I also bought some Bowman sets from Steve and a complete 1967 New York Yankee coke cap set. Long exhausting exhilerating fantastic weekend. Hopefully I can make some more shows, including Fanfest in Chicago in august and the National next year in Chicago. The Toronto show, which I highly recommend to anyone who likes hockey or OPC BB is in November and I plan on attending. Got to see some old friends and meet some new ones. Had a great time hanging out with other OBC'ers during and after the show. Had a blast at the swap session and enjoyed watching the Indians game on Friday night despite the 5 to 3 loss. At least I missed the Royals runs as I went to the food stand for 5 batters and missed a HR-BB-HR-HR-HR. Made it back to my seat in time to watch the next 3 batters make outs. I can't rave about the food like Mike D can because basically....it sucked. I managed to finished 2 sets (1957 and 1964) and knocked off about 200 other cards from my list. I'll provide more details on the thanks server this weekend along with a list of availables. I also managed to start 3 new sets (1948 Bowman and 1970 and 71 Supers). Took a walk around Bushnell Park in Hartford at lunch yesterday and saw a baseball game going on. There is a group called Vintage Base Ball Association that plays games like they did in the 1800's. They wear the old time uniforms and play without gloves. They are having a tournament this weekend with two brackets. A 1876 bracket and an 1884 bracket. There are 5 teams from CT, 2 from Michigan, 1 from NJ, 3 from NY, and 2 from NJ. Check out http://www.hartfordvintagebaseball.com/ for more info. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, jgreco@us.imshealth.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi all, I finally got to take a day off and type out a word or two about my trip to Cleveland. Fortunately for those of you with limited time to read, this takes away from the length of my report, since I might leave out some of the details due to limited memory... I think I did write up a pre-show report that described the corporate block party and events up until my journey to Wednesday: Rather than sit through an eBay seminar where we could find out how to buy and sell cards on eBay, I decided (without too much debate) that a trip to the football Hall of Fame might be a better idea. It was a lot smaller than I anticipated. My friend Mike and I got through it in a couple hours, although I probably could've taken a little longer if I wanted to. There was a 20 minute video I opted not to see, since Mike brought his six year old, who wouldn't sit still for 20 seconds, never mind 20 mins. I picked up a few trinkets for Steve Rittenberg at the museum shop before I left. Thursday: Opening Day for the Nationals. Kent Goto, Bob Reed (who were both staying down the hall from me) and I met up with Steve R. and Spike at the Fairfield Inn. I was surprised to see the spread they had out there for breakfast! The continental breakfast at the Budget Inn where we were basically consisted of a platter of pastries and a coffee machine placed in the corner of a semi-dark room. Here (where Steve had also gotten a cheaper rate via priceline.com) there was fruit, donuts, bagels, pastries, cereal, coffee, juice and probably more I missed. The place also had an outdoor pool - next door to us was a cemetery. Anyway, after driving back to get my dealer badge (in case any of you were unsure about my alias ), we all piled into Steve's car and headed to the IX Center. The place was huge, although I still think the shows in Atlanta and Anaheim were bigger (probably because there were beanie things at those shows). This was heaven for an old cardboard collector (hey, that's me!) and there was no doubt after walking through the VIP entrance and seeing Roger Neufeldt's table in the first spot in the first row. I tried not to spend too much time there, since there were 20+ other rows to walk through. I somehow managed to make it all the way to the other side just as the doors were closing. I did this by avoiding the scattered UV and slabbed card displays, as well as some of the nicer looking cases with gem mint stuff. (Usually I could tell by a couple price tags whether or not it was worth taking a longer look - if the display was nice, you would end up paying for the extra Windex and high wattage lightbulbs they were using in addition to the mint looking cards.) The problem with big shows like this is that dealers bring out there top shelf stuff to pay for the $800 table fees in one shot. The lower grade stuff is usually left at home, but there were still a few roughs among the diamonds. ;-) I think I completed my 1959 Fleer set on Thurs. (it's a big blur by now... in fact, the weekend was a big blur at the time). I found the elusive #68 Ted signs card for a little bit more than I originally wanted to pay, but it wasn't too beat up. Also scooped up a bunch of FB cards on my list. Friday: More browsing at some of the better tables from the day before. I picked up the rest of the FB cards on my list, save one (a 1961 Tom Flores RC). Found a few more cards for Glenn Codere, who sent me some money to act as his designated shopper. Then I made the big purchase that pretty much ended my buying: seven rookie cards at one table marked as a group lot - Aaron, Clemente, Koufax, Killebrew, Yaz, McCovey and Ripken (82 traded). I needed the Clemente for my 55 set and the Ripken for my 82 traded set (somehow, mine was lacking that card and Al Oliver). The rest were clear upgrades, but I may not replace the ones in my binders with these - they're TOO nice for my sets. Plus I might put a couple on eBay for the fools who collect nice cards to bid away on and make up some of the money I spent at the show. I also found a really nice Ryan RC for $100 at a friend's table (he practically cut the sticker price in half on it). I guess a lot of the dealers didn't have as good of a show as you'd think judging by the number of people that were walking around. It was pretty busy, but I guess lots of them were just looking. Instead of going to the ball game with the rest of the guys, I had already made plans for some poker with UV cards. I did OK at the game (which didn't start until late) and won a couple dollars' worth of cards and a Tiger Woods RC at pack wars. Saturday: Didn't have a lot of my own money left to spend, so I worked on Glenn's list a little more and chatted with a few people I knew from AOL. Sat around with William McGowan and taught him how to play "pack wars" with a box of UV baseball (Red Sox 100th ann. by Fleer or something like that - ask Steve R., since he bought the box afterwards). The kid won 7 out of 8 rounds. Also met up with Bill Malson for the first time while sitting there. Found yet another 59F 'Ted Signs' card for half the price of the one I already bought (doesn't that ALWAYS happen?). I couldn't pass on that one either, but my dealer scum badge came into play and Brett Domue completed his 59 Fleer set as well... by offering me a small profit for ten minutes work (most of which was walking across the convention center floor). Found another Ryan RC at Roger's table that was a little more well-loved and a little more money, but I got it anyway. The big event of the day was still to take place however - the OBC Swapfest. Attendees for the swap: Brett Domue (and his dad), Sean McGowan (and his son), Kent Goto, Neal Thomas, Mike Rich, Bob Reed, Steve Rittenberg, Doug Smith, Ron Perry, Terry Dietrick, Spike Glidden (Chuck Paris in spirit... with some of his dupes), and me (I think that's everyone). The cost of the room and pizza was provided by Kevin Savage, who deserves a special thank you... and some more OBC business the next time he's at a show near you. I managed to cross off a few more hockey and basketball cards off my list. I also hit Glenn's list a few more times for good measure. Some lasting memories include... * passing monster boxes of cards in and out of the first floor windows (like we were reverse robbing the place) * William McGowan raising his hand for every card offered up for grabs * Terry Dietrick nodding his head enough times to make a bobbin head doll squirm when I was asking who needed cards from my stack of 53's * a pack war for a 56 Mays offered up by Brett in which there were two winners (Steve and Spike) That's about all I can remember that hasn't already been relayed. I brought down my laptop and tried to form a gameplan for Sunday's shortened visit to the show. Mike Rich crashed for the night in my room with Doug - we found a cot at the other end of the hallway and hustled it in... then put it back out there the next morning and no one was the wiser ;-) Sunday: Picked up the last card on my football list and discovered Steve had also found one for me. Got a stray card on Glenn's list and said goodbye to a few folks who I won't see for a year or so. Neal Thomas finally decided he had spent enough at the show and he dropped me off at my car on his way home. Made the six hour ride to my aunt's house and then six more home the next morning. I've worked every day since then trying to make some of the money back that I just spent at the show. I'm also gonna have to start saving for Chicago soon. That's all for now. Hope you enjoyed the report. No idea who the author is. Ken M Anti All Star Team Detroit's Jeff Weaver and Robert Fick have appeared this season as bouncers on The Jerry Springer Show , which would be bad enough if the Detroit Tigers were winning, let alone rolling along in their usual underachieving cocoon. Pittsburgh pitcher Kris Benson and Philadelphia first baseman Pat Burrell each has discussed strategy in a national magazine, which wouldn't be so bad if that national magazine wasn't Penthouse and, in separate interviews, neither man was discussing the merits of the squeeze play in its traditional sense, if you get our drift. Pat Burrell's 'Penthouse' interview gives us the non-conventional version of a squeeze play.(AP) Los Angeles' Gary Sheffield spent several weeks ripping the organization this spring; Chicago White Sox designated hitter Frank Thomas walked out of camp because he was making only $9 million compared to Alex Rodriguez's $25 million this year and; White Sox pitcher David Wells ripped Thomas for not playing hurt -- then discovered Thomas' injury was bad enough to put him out for the season. Oh, and Cleveland manager Charlie Manuel ripped a "fat'' ball boy for helping send the Indians toward defeat in Detroit. So as you can see, it has been a busy, busy season for the ballot box stuffers responsible for choosing our annual Anti All-Star team. The rules are as they are every season. Anybody, even Bobby Valentine and Joe Torre, can pick an All-Star team (as Torre proved, all you have to do is toss darts at a Yankees' roster and see where they land). But it takes real thought and vision to pick an Anti All-Star team. Perennial All-Stars such as Cal Ripken Jr., Tony Gwynn and Pedro Martinez get all of the glory, accolades and free gear from equipment manufacturers. But what about our other heroes, such as Florida pitcher Ricky Bones, who pulled a muscle in his back and landed on the disabled list while watching television last season? And Al Martin, who was found to have two wives a couple of springs ago which, in most states, constitutes one too many? That's where we come in. The rules are fairly simple and straightforward: You can be eligible for our club in several ways, from doing something dim to saying something dim to downright shoddy performance on the field. It might only take one fleeting moment, or just part of a season, to suddenly qualify for our team. But once you make it, you're immortalized forever (or, at least until we can find corporate funding to build our Anti Hall of Fame). So as the real All Stars spend the next few days packing for their trip to next week's big game in Seattle, without further adieu, we present our 2001 Anti All-Star team. ... First base: Frank Thomas, White Sox. We know, we know. The Big Hurt -- literally, by the way, being that he's out for the season -- doesn't like to pick up his leather and take the field. He prefers designated hitter. And who can blame him -- for only $9 million a year, who has the energy to play defense? Now, if he was making somewhere in the neighborhood of our good buddy A-Rod, that would be incentive enough to take the field. Congratulations, Frank. Got any good David Wells stories to share in our clubhouse? Second base: Chuck Knoblauch, Yankees. Because we're overloaded with outfielders this year, in a move that surely will be one of the more sentimental moments of the season, we're moving Chuckie baby back to second base in a one-time only appearance. Knoblauch has become a regular on our club since the day he quit throwing straight, a problem that caused him to vacate second base in the first place. Now, consistency is what keeps him on our club year after year. This is a one-time legitimate All-Star who whined for years in Minnesota about wanting a multiyear contract, used his leverage to force a trade before the ink was even dry ... and then has spent the years ever since belly-flopping his way through the rest of his career. When his average dipped as low as .249 a week ago, we immediately penciled him into our starting lineup. Third base: Tony Batista, Orioles. Our man Tony actually played his way onto our team while performing for Toronto, kind of like how Julia Roberts won the Oscar for Erin Brockovich but you'll be seeing her in theaters this summer in America's Sweethearts. Batista slugged 41 home runs last season and was a big part of the reason why Toronto had high hopes coming into the season. The fact that he slumped to .207 this year, while in the second season of a four-year, $16 million deal, is part of the reason why the Blue Jays are out of the AL East race now. An All-Star last year, Toronto lost him to Baltimore on waivers this summer -- and then the Jays were happy to get out from under the contract. Which means they sure made a mistake in giving him that contract last year if they're already thankful he's gone. Shortstop: Rey Ordonez, Mets. Back from a broken hand that forced him to miss most of last season, Ordonez already has committed team-high nine errors this season. Everything wrong with the slumping, sluggish Mets is exemplified in Ordonez. He's hitting just .217, which is no surprise because he has never been an offensive threat. But when his glove begins to go, exactly what purpose does he serve? Left field: Al Martin, Mariners. Once one of the better young players in the NL, Martin has fallen on hard times lately -- to the tune this year of a .205 batting average, three homers and 21 RBI. No wonder the Mariners continue to look for another bat. Martin is a repeat offender on the Anti All-Star team following his smashing performance last season by getting caught in a predicament in which it was revealed he had two wives. We're still waiting for this year's Census Report to help us determine the plus-minus ratio on Martin's wives this summer. Center field: Gerald Williams, Yankees. Like Batista, Williams did most of the heavy lifting to make our club with another organization. If you can call Tampa Bay an "organization,'' that is. This is a guy who was making $4 million this season while batting .207 with a .261 on-base percentage for the Devil Rays. His agent threatened to file a grievance, based on the fact that the Devil Rays released Williams when he was just 66 plate appearances short of vesting his 2002 contract at $4 million. The Devil Rays could have filed a grievance back saying that Williams simply is a dog. Now that he has landed in New York, we're surprised Torre didn't name him to the AL All-Star team, too. Gerald will be playing out of position on our squad in center, but those are the sacrifices one must make to run with this heady company. Right field: Ray Lankford, Cardinals. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said last winter that, after a disappointing season, Lankford would be one of the keys to the Cardinals' success this season. It's no coincidence that, while the Cardinals are disappointing so far, Lankford has been nearly invisible. He's batting just .230 with a whopping 90 strikeouts in 222 at-bats. Meanwhile, his defense has been shaky and he has taken little responsibility. Say, didn't you used to be ... Ray Catcher: Todd Hundley, Cubs. The Windy City has never been windier than it was before Hundley went on the disabled list two weeks ago: As if batting .179 isn't bad enough, the man has struck out 53 times in 156 at-bats. Hundley signed with the Cubs last winter for four years and $23.5 million, and so far it has been a complete bust. It's a nice story, Todd going home to where his father, Randy, caught for all those years, and maybe eventually Todd can resurrect his career. But there's a lot of work to do -- his on-base percentage is .259 and his slugging percentage is .295. As far as hitters go, right now, you'd have to take Colorado pitcher Mike Hampton -- who has out-homered Hundley 6-4. Starting pitcher: David Wells, White Sox. Wells has spiraled downhill this year more quickly than Adam West on the Batpole in those old Batman episodes. He has ripped everything and everybody in his path, which can be kind of endearing when you're winning. But when you're 5-7 with a 4.47 ERA, it's tired. As Dean Wormer says in National Lampoon's Animal House, "Fat, hurt and stupid is no way to go through life.'' Or something like that. Our backup starting pitcher, just in case, is Detroit's Jose Lima. After winning 37 games over a two-year period, Lima moved along with the Astros into Enron Field -- and he immediately freaked. He went a career-worst 7-16 in 2000 while allowing an NL-record 48 home runs. There were more gopher sightings when Lima was on the mound last summer than there are in the entire Caddyshack film. Maybe he'll be a better fit in Detroit's cavernous Comerica Park. The Mets' Steve Trachsel, by the way, also received strong consideration for the starting pitcher spot. Closer: Dan Miceli, Marlins. Really, is there any other choice? Miceli ripped former Florida manager John Boles for "stupid'' managing, the Marlins leaped quickly to gas the good-guy Boles, and then Miceli professed surprise that none of his young teammates publicly came forth to support him. Well, duh! Maybe their first clue that they should keep their mouths shut came when Florida's fans -- all 3,045 of them in Pro Player Stadium -- directed some super-sized boos that shook the entire South Florida area toward Miceli. Hey Dan, maybe O.J. has an opening in his foursome on some Florida golf course. Setup man: Matt Whiteside, Braves. He earned his spot on Tuesday night when, after allowing a meaningless home run to Bobby Abreu in a 14-7 thumping of Philadelphia, an angry Whiteside slammed his glove against his locker. The bad news: His hand was still attached to his glove. The result was a broken bone in his right hand, a trip to the disabled list, his release from the Braves ... and a spot on our club. "Obviously, I didn't try and break my hand,'' Whiteside said. "It's one of those stupid injuries.'' Welcome to our team, Matt. Manager: Bob Brenly, Arizona. OK, so Brenly has the Diamondbacks in first place, so this might seem a little incongruous right about now. But while we strongly considered Kansas City skipper Tony Muser for this spot following his KC Masterpiece of a suggestion that his players go out and "pound tequila,'' it's safe to say Brenly clinched this spot with his inane ripping of San Diego's Ben Davis for the now famous bunt caper. In case you accidentally were watching a rerun of an old Barbra Streisand movie and it put you into a two-month sleep, Davis bunted for a single to break up Curt Schilling's bid for a perfect game in the late innings. Arizona led 2-0 at the time, and the Padres and Diamondbacks were tied for first. Brenly's point: An amazing individual performance should be respected. Our point: The integrity is in how you play the game, and you should play to win. General manager: Kevin Malone, Dodgers. Tampa Bay's Chuck LaMar received consideration, but when you look up "Anti All-Star'' in the dictionary, based on his performance over the past year, Malone is the guy whose picture appears. It's too bad, because Malone is a very nice man and we wish him well. But after being put on double-secret probation by ownership, you can't be challenging fans in the stands -- no matter how obnoxious they are. Owner: Tom Hicks, Rangers. Those numbers again: $252 million to Alex Rodriguez, including $25 million this year. And the Rangers were 28 games out of first place as of Thursday morning. Nice job, Tom. Best use of new equipment Question: What's worse, being stuck in a broken Comerica Park Ferris wheel for two hours, as some fans were Wednesday night, or watching the Tigers? Answer: If the Tigers are playing Tampa Bay, you'd much rather be stuck in the Ferris wheel. Wednesday, though, the Tigers were playing Kansas City ... so it was a draw. Best use of special effects: In case you missed Rally Monkey's birthday party last Friday in Anaheim, it surely will be one of the most memorable moments of the Angels' season. Particularly because the Angels immediately fell behind 8-2 by the end of the second inning. Rally Monkey, if you don't know, is a goofy monkey that appears on a video on the Angels' scoreboard in the late innings of games in which the Angels need runs. Which means, Rally Monkey gets plenty of work. So as they played clips of Rally Monkey on Friday and had the crowd sing Happy Birthday, the Angels spent the evening on the field looking like, well, "What they did tonight was a joke,'' pitcher Jarrod Washburn told reporters. "They made a mockery of the game. Last year it was fun. I don't think there was any reason for it tonight. Maybe if they worked this hard promoting the team as they did the monkey, we wouldn't play in front of 15,000 fans.'' Perhaps if the Angels were fewer than 23 games behind Seattle in the AL West, they would be playing in front of more than 15,000 fans. Besides, the Monkey is good. The Angels have come back to win 12 times this season after Rally has appeared, and they had 37 such victories last season. ================= Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 23:39:35 EDT Subject: 61-62 Fleer Availables To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: XDDX@aol.com In my seemingly never-ending pursuit of adding new sets to work on, I picked up a nice mixed grade lot of 61-62 Fleers off E-bay. We've now been in the new place for 3 weeks, and its really beginning to feel like home. We're going to decorate gradually, taking it a room at a time. First up is the one that's going to take the most work - the kitchen. Over the past three days, we've stripped wallpaper and tiles, had an electrician in to fit new sockets and points, dismantled and broken up the old kitchen units, and tore up the old flooring. Tomorrow, our new range gets delivered and fitted. The new kitchen units come next Monday, so over the next week we'll have to prepare everything so that all we have to do is assemble them and slot them in. That means wallpapering, painting, and laying down new flooring. We're hopeful that 2 weeks from today we'll have a great new kitchen to work in! While all this has been going on, I've been quietly working away on the spare bedroom - which will be, in reality, my bar/computer room. It's not a big room (14' x 11'), but once I'm finished with it, it should be a cosy little retreat with the bar in one corner, the computer in another, a sofa-bed for guests, and the walls plastered with Tigers memorabilia. Plans are in hand for our housewarming party on Saturday August 11th. I'm doing my damnedest to get a webcam working with live streaming video, but so far I've had no luck, and I'm not computer literate enough to figure out the problem. I have a work colleague (our office web guy) coming over later this week to have a look at things for me. Hopefully, he'll be able to see what I'm doing wrong. As soon as things are up and running, I'll post the URL out to the ramblings server so that all you guys can be "virtual" guests - assuming of course that you can't make it in person (ALL What with all the upheaval over the past few months, I've become very reticent in carrying out my OBC responsibilities. Nothing much has headed Stateside from Chez Codere of late. This weekend, however, while listening to the Tigers beat the Cubs this evening, I worked my way through a few wantlists, and put together 15 packages which will be dispatched early this week. Hopefully, I'll start up regular sendings again very soon! Before I sign off, I'd like to thank two OBCers who helped me out at the National. Ken Morganti was my DS (Designated Shopper) for the week, and by the sound of his report, he seems to have done some terrific work on my behalf. I'd also like to thank Steve Rittenberg who laundered the money to allow Ken to make the purchases (Ken doesn't have a PayPal account). Thanks to both of you guys. Mucho beers to be forthcoming in Chicago next year! Cheers for now! I wasn't at all surprised to see Marc Macrae cruise in at Number One. He's truly in a class by himself in all aspects of dealing with collectors. However, the magazine was rudely interrupted by a typically brainless, unfocused, flatulent article by my "bete noir," Tony Galovich. About ten years ago, he was running a very poorly disguised scam which boiled down to him writing articles as a hobby expert in Sports Collectors Digest, in which he promoted certain cards as undervalued (I believe they were 1963 Topps high numbers), then running classified ads in the defunct Baseball Card News selling the exact same cards he was pushing in SCD. That's a clear conflict of interest. I wrote a letter of complaint to the editor of BCN, which was published, but never got a response from Galovich and produced a lukewarm personal response from the editor, who also sent me a Ruth/Gehrig postcard. In the meantime, Galovich had a running feud with Lew Lipset, one of the hobby heroes and a VIP at VCBC (can you tell I work for IBM with all these acronyms?) Not for nothing, a few months after that incident, Galovich disappeared from view for a while, slipping over to Tuff Stuff, and BCN went out of business. So now he's back, ruining the one magazine left which I truly enjoy. And I mean it when I say that his article sticks out like a sore, infected, festering, gangrenous, leprosy-stricken thumb. My question: is it worth writing a letter of complaint to Don Betz at VCBC? I don't give much of a tinker's cuss about Galovich himself, but I don't want to screw up a potential relationship with VCBC and OBC. And I REALLY don't want Galovich to become a regular contributing columnist with that magazine. Possibly someone with their head not as far up their ass as mine can set me straight. Wayne M. National report (with apologies to Neal Thomas, who's entirely innocent) Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 23:26:43 -0500 From: "tim newcomb" There have been some great reports on the National (I especially liked Ken' s, which managed to morph me into Neal Thomas; I took this as a compliment because Neal's a good-looking guy, but it doesn't say much either for Ken's grasp of reality, or for my memorability). After all the others, I don't know what I can add-just some tidbits, and here they are. The trip from Champaign to Cleveland on Thursday seemed to take forever- but when I finally arrived about 9:30 and checked into my own Priceline special, I tracked the guys down in Steve's room, and spent a couple of happy hours with Bob, Kent, Spike, Steve, and Neal chatting and making plans for Friday. The guys said they'd left a few cards for those of us unable to get there on Thursday. After a miserably sleepless night, spent half tossing and turning anticipating the show, the other half trying to get my internet connection to work and buying a plane ticket which seemed to be going up in price by the hour. But all was well on Friday morning after I got a cholesterol special at McDonald's and went over to meet the guys. We waited for at least 90 minutes before the IX Center people would let us in (and that was only because of the VIP badges that Steve had mysteriously procured)- but that only added to the excitement and anticipation. We lugged in an embarrassing amount of junk food and beverages, to store shamelessly at Ron Barrett's table. On Friday, thanks to Bob Reed who scored us some tickets, a bunch of us piled into cars and headed to the Jake for the homerun-fest. That was great- we should always try to combine the National with a game if there's one available. Next year in Chicago there's bound to be at least one! Like everyone else, I had a great time at the swapfest on Saturday- tossed too many cards away and received too many to keep track, but I know my 1952 and 1958 sets were hit numerous times by a bunch of guys. More than this, it was great hanging out. I enjoyed meeting for the first time Sean, Terry D, Mike R, Ron P, Trader Doug, Kent Goto Guy, and very briefly, Chuck Paris and Bill Malson too. And always good to see Steve, Spike, Bob, Brett, and "Dealer Scum" Neal. I feel like offering thanks to many people: to Steve for the VIP passes and the nagging, to Bob for arranging the Tribe tickets, to Ron and Sheila Barrett for putting up with us and being such good company, to Spike for the soft drinks and for being such a sharp dresser. As others have mentioned, Kevin Savage deserves our thanks and good will for footing the bill for the meeting room and the pizzas; and of course so does Neal, who actually made the arrangements. I even really enjoyed a lot of dealers I met, not only the familiar ones like Ron, Kevin, Roger, and Bill at Shoebox Cards, but new (to me) folks like Kurt Tourdot, Scott Brockelman, Kit Young, Chandy Greenholt, and lots of others. I had a great time shopping from the beginning to the end. I discovered T206 with scarce backs priced like regular ones at the first table I walked up to, and from there never looked back! To me the proportion of prewar cards to newer ones seemed substantially higher than at Fort Washington, but there was such a large number of tables that I may have imagined this. For 2 ½ days I was in hog heaven, during which I needed numerous cash transfusions. Each time I resolved to spend only this much more, but then I kept finding what seemed like excellent buys, and had to buy them. Then on Saturday I fell into a terrific T206 group which is going to put me well on the way to a decent set (minus the big 5, of course). When Jeff Sackmann was issuing bulletins about the approaching completion of his set a year or so ago, I thought it sounded like an impossible dream, but now I can see it as a real possibility. Hurray! I didn't finish any sets at the show, but I got down to 6 Diamond Stars, and found terrific additions to almost all the prewar sets I'm concentrating on. After so much fun I floated home on Sunday. My only regret is that I didn't go up on the Ferris Wheel that's inside the IX Center and rain down worthless and painful UV cards on the people milling around the PSA table :) This was my first National but not my last. It was one of the best times I' ve ever had in the hobby. I hope you'll all get the chance to go to one, and that it makes you as happy as it made me. I was in Louisville, KY, for the couple of days just before the show itself, so I made sure to take a tour through the Louisville Slugger factory and museum, which is certainly worth the $6 if you happen to be nearby. The museum has a nice collection of visual and audio baseball history, along with bats you can hold from a number of players, past and present. The most imposing part of the museum was a pitcher simulator, where you can see a visual representation of being a batter against a pitcher throwing 90mph fastballs. You select from a list of pitchers (Clemens, Ryan, Johnson among them), who are then projected in pitching motion on the screen in front of a pitching machine that spits out the 90pmh ball at the appropriate time. Makes you glad not to be a batter; when Randy throws, it looks like he's going to fall on you. After my time in Louisville, I took a Greyhound up to Cleveland, where Steve Rittenberg, Ken Morganti, and Kent Goto cruised by to pick me up. Steve hit me with some 71 OPC as a show preview, and we spent a while going through cards in the hotel room. The first day of the show started early, as the VIPs were able to wander in around 9:30, before some dealers had set up. (Security figured out their mistake on later days, and we couldn't get in until 10:30.) The IX convention center is BIG, taking several minutes just to walk from one end to the other. Three days really isn't enough time to check everything out, but I felt like I was at least able to hit all the bargain boxes I saw. The best boxes usually don't find their way out until Saturday (or maybe even Sunday). As one dealer put it, "Wait until the good stuff stops selling, then put out the junk boxes." Fortunately, not everyone stuck to this, as there were at least four good 50 cent and under boxes out for inspection most of the show. That's not to say big dollar cards weren't purchased (got both back variations of the 56 Mantle for $100), but I probably spent at least as much on commons as I did on stars. A primary goal of the show was to close out all my 70s sets (except the 75 minis, since I still need 200+). In a word, success! I fell one card short as of Saturday (my last day at the show), but Steve found the elusive 72 Orioles team card on Sunday. The final count of completed sets was 68, 70, 71, 72, 73, and 75 Topps! I think I hit just about every set on my list (not a small feat), doing the most damage to my 62s, 63s, and 67s. Friday night, a bunch of us went out to the Jake for some Indians baseball, a priority since I can't see myself heading out to Cleveland again anytime soon. The evening was perfect, and we were there to experience the tying of a major league record, as Dave Burba gave up four HRs in one inning (without recording an out!). Unfortunately, none came our direction, breaking my string of souvenirs at "first" games (first game at Safeco Field, baseball; first game at Fleet Arena, puck; first game at New Britain field, baseball ... just lucky, I guess). The five runs proved adequate for the Royals, so we missed out on seeing John Rocker storm out from the CF bullpen. After the game, Bob Reed collected cups from the surrounding seats, getting a total of 21 (7 sets of 3 diff). Bob and I got separated from the others and became trapped in a "holding pen"- style people were using to watch the postgame fireworks show. Fortunately they let us out before the crowd stampeded (we're rowdy that way--grunt grunt!). After the show Saturday, Kevin Savage was so excellent as to sponsor a swap session for us, complete with pizza. I spent an hour or so sorting through what I needed and what was dupes from the show (about half and half) while people threw cards back and forth. I don't know exactly how many cards changed hands, but I definitely got as good as I gave, including a gratis 56 Mays from Brett Domue (amongst other cards from everyone). Forgive me if I miss people, but I know I have thanks for at least these people: Steve Rittenberg: 71 OPCs, 56 Mantle for $75, 56 Williams for $40, many 60s hits, 72 Orioles team (last 70s card!) Tim Newcomb: Brooklyn T206 (from his $1000 deal--yow!) and other 60s Kent Goto: 71 Astros Team (last 71 card), more 60s hits Ken Morganti: 52 & 53 hits Mike Rich: More 60s hits Brett Domue: 56 Mays, 53 hits Bob Reed: 60s hits Doug Smith: 57 hits Is that it? I'm sure there's more, but my brain cells just don't work like they used to. In all, a "superior card show experience." Can't wait for Chi-cagah next year! ================= To: Subject: All StarZ-z-z-z-z- Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 12:59:45 -0700 From: "Diamanti" Well Guys: I watched the pre-pre-game and the post-post game and the actual game sandwiched in between all the hoopla --- from the comfort of my dining room table while I dined on chicken breast in olive oil and parmesano, Italian salad, crusty bread, and pepperoncini -- made by me. Later I had some of my wife's homemade ice cream (nectarine) slathered with a local strawberry sauce we made after I personally picked the berries from a U-Pick patch.(I take my food seriously, if you hadn't noticed....) It sure wasn't Mac's Smokehouse, and it sure wasn't as much fun as being there. But I digress...... My son Trent is totally into the Showdown baseball cards, playing the Showdown game, and also playing"High Heat Baseball 2001" on his new computer, which he bought mostly with his own money. While the All Star game was on yesterday, he arranged, re-arranged, and piled up his cards as the stars of the game appeared before our eyes. My take on the whole thing? Since I live in the area, the build-up, the billions of gallons of electronic and journalistic ink lavished on the event, became quite tedious and redundant. I watched ESPN as well and got a bit sick of their coverage, although the film footage of Mantle and Mays and Aaron hitting homers during their home run derbies caught my attention. Unfortunately, Seattle and the Puget Sound region came off in a totally favorable light as it has been nothing but sunshine for at least a week. (Really, it rains contantly, but usually from October to May...I am not making this up...) We are scheduled to have 6 million people in Western Washington by 2005. (I may have to move, but if I go any farther west, I'll be on the Olympic Peninsula, and even farther from Major League Baseball than I am now....drat). So there they were, Lou and Pay-Rod chatting on the bench, Cal playing shortstop, Ichiro bouncing an infield single and beating out Randy Johnson to the bag, Tommy LaSorda landing on his ass ("I was watching the ball!" he said). All in all I enjoyed the game quite a bit.....though it's a bit annoying to have an interview going on while LIVE PITCHES are heading to the plate... duh...hope this isn't a trend. Tomorrow my son and I head to Sayphcoe to take on the powerful Giants and Mr. Bonds. I shall file a full and comprehensive report. In the meantime, who collects Hopalong Cassidy stuff? Trent and I and my friend Carl (my age, former Lil League coach, baseball lover, non-vintage-card guy) arrived at the ferry to take us to the mainlandaround 11 AM yesterday. The doughnut I had hours earlier was long gone, soI sauntered over to Shirley's (food trailer) and asked her what the heck "breakfast on a stick" was, per the menu. "Well, it's like a corn dog -- sausage on a stick with pancake dough wrapped around it, then deep-fried." Hey, I'm game, so when it arrived I asked why the soy sauce in the little container..."That's maple syrup, silly.." Oh, yeah, I knew that -- hey it was GOOD! Fortified with an early dose of vitamin G (grease) we headed to Seattle... And went straight to the University District Trading Card shop, which as usual, was overflowing with "stuff". (Who collects Gus Triandos stuff? There was a Gus catcher's mitt there...). The owner, Mike, hauled out some '49 Bowmans and tape-marked '52 Topps that had walked in the door recently and I bought those for selling and passing out. My son bought a few Aaron Sele cards to give to his buddy Riley, a hard-core Giant fan who was meeting us atthe game....Now we were off to the downtown area, but where to eat? Mac'sSmokehouse, I guessed, was still closed, so Carl casually mentioned the International District near the ballpark -- a rather famous area of Seattle Ihad never been to (hey, I got Kids, remember?!) as a possible eating destination. Well, little buddies, let me tell you, if Morganti ever comes out this way, I'm gonna dare him to eat his way through these restaurants....the fantastic smells alone will kill him....We walked into an Asian grocery store/food pavilion that had every ethnic situation covered. I settled for going through the steam table line and getting various items......dang it! No room for the goodies from the bakery! We crossed by King Street Station and Union Station to get to the ballpark area where Paul Allen's new Seahawk stadium is decidedly taking shape. Mac and his buddy were busy setting up the hot dog stand, and the bad news was that Mac's Smokehouse may not open until --gasp -- Christmas!! But the humorous news was that MLB had commandeered the street where Mac normally sets up his hot dog stand, and they only allowed vendors who would pony up the $8 Grand necessary for a MLB license during the All Star Extravaganza. Mac knew the Budweiser guys who had a huge booth right across from the main stadium entrance, and they let him sell his hot dogs, free, at their concession! He actually had to hire a security guard to protect his stand and his person, since he figured his competition was pretty upset about the whole thing.... We got in the ballpark when the gates opened at 5 PM and Carl and I sat behind home plate and watched the San Fran guys take BP -- specifically Mr. Bonds -- who was launching them everywhere, but especially against the upper decks over the right field bleachers. So we get settled comfortably (sun BLASTING into my shades and hat) into our centerfield seats, and Bonds hits one 30 yds. from us --- his first at bat! 1-0 Giants! The game moved along quickly from that point, but as a low-scoring duel. The Giants shortstop homered and made the game 3-2 their favor until the 9th, when David Bell parked one in the left field seats to tie it! Wow! The crowd became electrified! This was AFTER Rob Nen had come in and was throwing 97-98 mile per hour stuff! Now we're in extra innings....Mike Cameron draws a walk, then about 9 throws over to first base....then he steals second....McLemore walks....runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs, Lampkin muscles one up the middle, the infielders converge on it, Cameron is rounding 3rd, the throw to the plate hits the pitcher's mound, Cameron scores, GAME OVER!! I was exhausted....even after having a hot pork sandwich in the 6th inning.......trudge to the car, drive home, get home late.......wake up hungry..... Have a Great Weekend, Guys!! Yep, we're back from our journey to the Ukraine. And we brought home 6 1/2 year old Elena Marie Neill with us. A real blessing to our family. She doesn't speak a work of English--but we speak so little Russian that it's even. This was my first journey outside the US (other than Canada, and that doesn't count, not even Quebec) and it was amazing. The Ukraine is awonderful country. We thought we'd be staying in Kiev, the capital and a city of over 4 million--instead we ended up in Donetsk--a city that is a rather rough 13 hour train ride east (25 miles from Russia) and a working class city--think Gary, Indiana in the 40's. We spent almost 2 weeks there--most of it on our own, as the Ukrainian person who was helping us needed to goback to Kiev to do some paperwork, and since we were in a waiting period, we told him there was no need to rush back--he just got married in October and we hated to keep him away from his bride. So, we were on our own in a city of 1 million people where we couldn't speak a work that they understood(other than thank you). It was great. The people there were amazinly friendly and helpful. Donetsk is definitely not a tourist town, so they don't get a lot of westerners--but everyone we met went out of their way to help us. We went to open air markets and stores to buy our food--we just pointed (we did learn to count to 10) and gestured and they always found a way to figure out what we wanted and tell us how much it cost--and they never once tried to cheat us, or even make us feel stupid because we couldn't speak Russian (Donetsk is so close to Russia that they still speak Russian, not Ukranian). We wandered all over the city and had a great time. It helped that the dollar was so strong--trolley rides cost about 7 cents, a full meal at a restaurant for 4 ran us a whopping 8-10 bucks! Anyway, the trip was a great success. We adopted a great girl who we know God had waiting for us--she is an identical twin to my son Andy. Not exaggerating--we pulled out a picture of him when he was 6, and they look almost identical. We're now in the stage of trying to teach her English. She knowsher alphabet already, but unfortunately it's the Cyrillic alphabet. We'd be better off if she didn't know it, because they use some of the same letters we do, but they have different sounds--such as the letter H has a "N" sound. Oh well, should be fun. Anyway, the reason for the note--when I got back and went to the post office I found note one, but two (that's dva in Russian) letters from Geno, with2 great 1963's (and of course, two APBA cards to boot!). ================= To: Subject: 1974 and 1978 are left Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 23:11:50 -0400 From: "Robert Fitts" Hi again Several OBCers have stepped up to the plate and taken about 2,000 cards, but I still have a big problem. Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 15:46:36 -0700 From: "Grant Rainsley" For those of you that would like to follow along at home, grab an atlas with a map of British Columbia in it, it might be worth the trip. Prelude:Our usual destination is a little chunk of property we have on Savary Island, about 4 1/2 hours from Vancouver...great view. (That's Vancouver, in the lower left corner of Canada.) Follow the coastline up a couple of inches to Powell River....Savary is about a ten minute water taxi ride from there. P.R. only has about 10,000 people, but at least it has a card shop. Okay, it's a lousy card shop, but it's a shop....they even had Survivor cards! We intend to retire to Powell River in a few years. But I digress....keep the map handy. Plot:We seem to endure a disaster of some sort every trip. Three years ago, our dog cut her pads to ribbons on barnacles, and we had to hire the water taxi to get her to the vet in P.R. for stitches. Two years ago, the day before we were about to leave for Savary (some of you might remember this) my daughter was stricken with appendicitis, which was gangrenous and ready to burst. Cancel that trip, but it was lucky it happened here and not on some almost uninhabited island. Last year, I was unloading our gear from the water taxi and spent 5 days in the trailer on my back (which was crocked!). Hmmm....encore required. Cut to this past week....(this is where the map will help)....Everything looked great, as I had picked up a 1983 Honda 110 m/c for nothing, spent around 150 bucks restoring and bringing it back to life...runs great, and a perfect fit for the island. My wife complained that she would never see me now that I had real wheels, and not just a bicycle. I happily agreed, and took off. On my way back, I found her, prone, holding her knee. She had taken a header, landing knees-first on a rock, and shattered the top of her tibia, just below the kneecap. Got the map ready? First, a stretcher ride on the water taxi, which we had to hire specially, back to Powell River. They took X-rays and confirmed that it really really hurt, and reported that they had no surgeon on site that could fix it. (Daughter, dog, and I are still on Savary.) So they ship her by ambulance and ferry to Campbell River on Vancouver Island where there is a surgeon....just draw a straight line across to Vancouver Island and go a bit north...there it is. Repairs are done, a rebuild of the top of the tibia, and a day later they say "get out." Problem is, our truck is in Powell River, and the keys are in Campbell River with the patient. So...phone call to Father-in-law, who lives about 3 hours drive south of Campbell River in a place called Qualicum Beach/Parksville. He drives up to Campbell River, grabs his daughter, takes the ferry back across to Powell River, drops her off at her sister's place, then has to race to catch the ferry back to Vancouver Island so he can get home again. Beauty. Now we can get our truck back, so Kate, Bailey(dog), and I cut the trip short and head back to Powell River, where Jenny is. New problem...she has a huge honkin' brace on her leg, and is unable to get in our vehicle. Kate, Bailey, and I head back home, leaving Jenny in Powell River for a couple of weeks in her sister's care, until I can get back up there. Looks like she is crocked for at least 6 months. On the other hand, the motorcycle ran great. And anyone in OBC with a death-wish is more than welcome to use our "retreat" any time you wish. ================= To: Subject: 1939 team help... There is a 1939 Goudey Premium listed for a Frank Higgins (Pinky's name was Mike, not Frank). The SCD Standard Catalog confirms that the card is for Frank, not Pinky. The Alphabetical Guide lists 9 different cards for Frank Higgins from 1933 to 1939. I doubted it at first because the Beckett Baseball Card Alphabetical Checklist has separate listing for Frank Higgins and Pinky Higgins. Terry caused me to take a second look and I found that although Frank and Pinky had listings throughout the '30s they had no issue in common other than the 1936 Goudey Wide Pen Premiums. Hmmm - suspicious. I looked up the checklist for the Wide Pens and found that SCD lists Frank as 76A and Pinky as 76B. This certainly suggests that indeed Frank and Pinky were one in the same. I am using Microsoft Publisher to design my pages and I have an AOL "web page host". (If that is the right word) In other words I have a "members.aol.com" web page. HOW do I get publisher to place my web page in my "members.aol.com" directory without having to upload each tiny file (hundreds of them) one at a time??? I have tried that web publishing wizard with no luck, it could be I am doing something wrong but I am stuck to the point of being VERY frusterated. I went through the same puzzlement a while back. Sometimes BB cards have a lot of trouble figuring out players' names. Take, for example, the 1934 Goudey card of "Floyd Vaughan"; but then other cards give him as Joe or Joseph Vaughan. This is Joseph Floyd Vaughan, whom I thought everyone called "Arky," future HOFer and great young star of 1933. Why Goudey was so confused is beyond me. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Monday, July 16, 2001 8:19 PM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Frank Higgins > Hi Mark, > Could it have been Michael Franklin "Pinky" Higgins? > Bob > To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: > OBC-Ramblings-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com > Your use of Yahoo! When my wife and I travel out of the state, I make sure I do my homework to find out what (if any) minor league teams are in the area and when they are playing. I'm fairly lucky in that I have two clubs within a half hour drive from my home - the NY-Penn League's Lowell (MA) Spinners (Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) and the Atlantic League's Nashua (NH) Pride, an independent team in an independent league. Since the Lowell Spinners are usually "SRO" we purchased a book of 10 bleacher seats for Nashua Pride games for a partly $30...the same price as one right field box seat at Fenway. Nashua Pride games are played at Holman Stadium, a brick park built in 1937 that played host to the Nashua Dodgers a half decade ago (including Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe) and also the Nashua Angels in 1983 and Nashua Pirates from 1984-1986. Tall pine trees surround the park, making it very scenic. Also, within the last couple of years, it has been outfitted with seats from Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium! The Atlantic League's talent level is somewhere between AA and AAA. Rosters usually have at least a couple of players who have made it to the "big show" and are hoping they can make it there again. Some former big league players who spent some time with the Nashua Pride and went on to be signed by MLB organizations again include Milt Cuyler, Ken Ryan and Felix Jose. In fact, the most famous Atlantic League alumnus was signed by the Chicago White Sox about one month ago: Jose Canseco. This year, the Nashua Pride again have some familiar names: Chad Fonville, Sam Horn, Jose Malave, Jerome Walton, and Marty Janzen, not to mention manager Butch Hobson. In fact, we saw the Newark Bears Sunday night and who took the mound for the visitors but none other than Jaime Navarro! Of course, there are all sorts of contests and entertainment at a minor league game. My favorite is where two teams of two kids compete in an ice cream eating contest. One kid holds a plate of ice cream in front of another kids face....from behind! The "holder" slips his/her arms under the "eater's" armpits and holds the ice cream for a nice spoonless buffet. My wife was Sunday nights hero. Once, she slipped away telling me she was going to get something to eat. She came back with a caramel apple for herself...and a set of cards for me! Later, when she was came back from the ladies room, she handed me a foul ball! What a gal! Jaime Navarro got hit pretty hard, but most balls were right at fielders so he escaped with giving up two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Chad Fonville had two singles and a double and was rock solid defensively. Jerome Walton almost got thrown out of the game arguing a strike call. A little girl from Kentucky did the player intros over the PA system during the bottom of the sixth. We got coupons for free french fries at McDonalds, as the starting Nashua pitcher struck out ten. Ahhh...minor league baseball fever! Catch it!! Maybe I'm a sucker, but I do really like the memorabilia cards. Not many people can afford whole pieces of games used equipment, but for $5 to $10, you can get all kinds of various items...bats, balls, shoes, bases, dirt etc. I cannot precisely place the appeal of memorbilia, but certainly it has more to do with sharing the experience of baseball's past than with any particular quality the piece of memorbilia had before it was used. So although the bat may now be just slivers of wood, its capacity to share baseball's history remains undimished. Also, by making the slivers you allow 1000 people to pay $10 to enjoy the little piece of baseball history instead of one person who can pay $10,000. The more people that can share the collecting experience, the better the hobby will be. That's my 2 cents. Mark's Comments... My two cents- I'M MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!! In addition to my recent attempts to help reinstate my college fraternity chapter (SUNY Potsdam, NY, not the Marist College chapter I advise) and my training for the second part of my 1st degree black belt test in November, I've allowed myself to be strapped to a chair, have my eyes ripped open with a miniature buzz saw, and my corneas blasted out with a laser. As gruesome as it sounds, it was only a total of twelve minutes for two painless operations, with a little over two minutes under the laser. I went from 20/600 in the right eye and 20/oh-hell-I-can't-see-the-chart in the left eye to what appears to me to be 20/20 in both eyes. The only drawback is that I have a pair of perfectly normal, healthy, 44-year-old eyes which will probably need reading glasses in a few years. If anyone is considering LASIK surgery in the future, let me tell you it's a no-brainer. This was nothing short of a miracle. The New York team with the best record will receive an automatic berth in the World Series. The New York team with the worst record will have to face the team with the best record out of the remaining 20 teams in MLB to go to the World Series and meet the other New York team. Note that there are only 20 other MLB teams. This is because MLB will contract by removing 8 of the weaker franchises. The two New York teams will be allowed to pick up to 5 players from the teams being disbanded and add them to their roster. The remaining players will become free agents. Also, since the 5 players picked by the New York teams will probably be amoung the better players available and therefore have large contracts, the remaining 20 teams will each contribute 10% of their gross revenues to the two New York teams to insure they will make a healthy profit. On Tuesday we lost an F-16 out here at Edwards. Both crewmembers were killed. The pilot was my friend and next-door neighbor who left behind his wife and three children (13, 9, and 7). His daughter is our babysitter and his sons play with my son, unfortunately they no longer have a father. I didn't know the backseater, but he left behind three kids as well. It has been a rough week watching the Aaron's family show up next door and sit out back and cry on the patio. I happened to be flying an F-15 sortie that morning. My wife was out in the front yard when the cars pulled up and the general, chaplain, and a few other folks got out and started walking down the street towards the house. My wife knew what it was about (they all know what that means), but she didn't know who's house they were going to, so that shook her up pretty bad. What am I getting at you ask? Hell, I don't evenknow. I guess the one thing I wanted to say was not to take your family for granted. I kiss my kids every morning while they sleep before I show upfor my 5:00 briefing in case today isn't my day. But stuff happens outside of airplanes too, so I should do that every chance I get. I guess that'smy point - don't take family for granted, they should be your first priority. Tell your kids you love them and give your wife a big hug everytime you leave the house for work, because who knows what may happen along the way. Don't take for granted what you have, because it may be gone in a second. I guess I just needed to get that off my chest - thanks for listening... Take Care, Geno ================= Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2001 02:54:54 -0400 To: malsman250@cs.com Subject: Reminiscing those first Baseball Card trades!!! From: Mark S Talbot Bill Malsman writes: ...the "Immortal Joe" Azcue, who was just listed as one of the century's 100 all-time best Indians... Hello All, After Geno's posting this lighthearted post is rather insignificant but I was half way through composing it so I figured I would post it anyway. Do you remember your first baseball card trades? I remember buying my first pack of cards in 1964 in Norwood, Ohio just north of Cincinnati, it was the same year my Dad took me to my first Baseball game at Crosley Field. Having moved from New England (Bristol, CT - my hometown) in 1961, I was still a Red Sox fan 3 years later. I often traded Reds cards for 2, 3 sometimes even 4 Red Sox cards. I didn't care if I had them or not, it said Red Sox on the card and I wanted them. Well that brings me to the story about trading baseball cards that Bill brought to mind when he mentioned the "Immortal Joe Azcue" then catcher for the Tribe. At 8 years old I really didn't know much about baseball, it's history or even it's then current players. Sure I knew most of the `64 Reds players, I knew that I loved the Red Sox and I knew that I could also root for both teams cause they would never play each other. I also knew that I hated the Yankees because you see I was from New England and in New England you are either a Red Sox fan or you are a Yankees fan. I was a Red Sox fan, therefore I had to "hate" the Yankees. So at 8 years old I would "trash talk" any Yankee I ever did see. So the scene has been set and then came the fateful day of "the trade". I call it the trade because it has haunted me ever since I realized a few years later how badly I made out on this trade. My friend Tim Wilp and I made our way to the corner store to cash in the bottles we had found in the neighborhood. I had 5 of them so I got 10¢ that was quickly converted into 2 packs of Baseball Cards. We sat on the curb and opened those babies up and smashed the first piece of gum in our mouths, I can still taste that Topps bubble gum. Then we opened the second pack and packed in another crunchy stick of gum and we looked at the 10 cards that were left. Tim was looking over my shoulder when he started talking trade almost immediately. "Hey Mark, see that Yankee guy you got there - he's no good - I got a real baseball player over here" said Tim. Now I knew he was right cause I hated the Yanks and this other guy Tim was talking about played in Cleveland and at least that was in Ohio. So Tim proposed the trade and after a brief pause and Tim's reassurance that this Indian guy was a "really good" player I accepted his offer because after all I hated the Yanks any way - Right!!! Well that was the fateful day that the "Immortal Joe Azcue" of the Cleveland Indians was traded one for one for Roger Maris of the dreaded New York Yankees. I know now that this trade could have only taken place between two boys sitting in front of a candy store chomping on Topps bubble gum and flipping the coins that came in each pack. But to this day I still do not own a `64 Roger Maris card, although I did for about 5 minutes in 1964. That may be why "the trade" still haunts me after all these years because I still don't have one. Yet after all these years I'm glad to find out the it was true, that the "Immortal Joe Azcue" was at least listed as one of the century's 100 all-time best Indians. Do you think that Roger would be included in a listing of the century's 100 all-time best Yankees? Maybe so - Maybe not, maybe it wasn't such a bad trade after all. So does anybody have a spare 1964 Roger Marris card laying around, I'll bet I can come up with maybe 2 Joe Azcue cards for it? Come on now do I have any takers? We all know now, thanks to Bill that ...the "Immortal Joe" Azcue, was just listed as one of the century's 100 all-time best Indians... The hobby was great then and its great now - how about you - do you have a favorite trading baseball cards story. Thanks Bill - "for bringing it up again" and thank you to anybody who indulged me this far. BE WELL!!! REGARDS --------------------------------- MARK "Live long and prosper" - Spock * Mark S. Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2001 10:19:47 -0700 From: "Dave Fallen" This ramble is kind of provoked by the excellent ramblings of Mark "I won'ttake it anymore" Talbot and Mac "It works for me" Wubben. First of all, they are both right. One of the great things about OBC is the tolerance of different points of view. A core interest in vintage cards is required, ofcourse, but even there opinions differ. I got back "into" baseball cards in 1997. My appetite was insatiable. I put together the entire 1960 Topps set in EX condition (except the Mantle AS) in less than a year. I occurred to me, as it has to most of you, that I could greatly increase my volume if I got less picky about the condition, thus I adopted a "Tipton" attitude long before I discovered the Guru or OBC.Another way of increasing the volume was through UV's. For some time now, my interest in UV's has been waning. I was getting tired of the price and the marketing strategies (short prints, gimmicky cards, etc.). But I kept falling for cards like the annual Topps Gallery because I just liked the looks of them. Recently I had been toying with buying a box (or two) of Topps Gallery. They are gorgeous cards based on original artwork reminiscent of the 1953 Topps. Of course, they are short printing the rookies and prospects making the set much more expensive to put together. What stopped me in my tracks was a 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folder of Home Run Baker and Eddie Collins. I picked this card up on eBay for $40 in beautiful condition. I can't stop looking at it - it just gives me a good warm feeling. Then I got to thinking, $40 is much less than I would pay for a box of UV's. Have I ever gotten this feeling out of a box of new stuff? The answer is no way! I've pulled my share of memorabilia cards - bats, gloves, autographs, etc. - but nothing gave me the glow that this antique card did. In fact, I have several boxes of UV's I've collected that just set around gathering dust. The only cards I pull off the shelf to look at are the old ones, especially the pre-war cards. So the Mecca Double Folder has done it. From now on my bucks go into the old stuff. Rather than add additional early Topps sets, I think I will go for the occasional pre-war card instead. In particular, I'm starting to like the B-18 blankets. Yesterday I went to Big Al's favorite card store: U-Trading in Seattle. Imanaged to increase my "warm fuzzy factor" significantly. I picked up a 1964 Topps Giants Aaron at a reasonable price to finish that set. I also picked up a 1957 Seattle Popcorn card. It was seriously trimmed, but these cards are scarce as hen's teeth so I was happy to get it. It was my favorite variation, having an advertisement for Gil's drive-in on the back. You would have had to grow up in Rainier Valley (Seattle) in the '50s to appreciate that one. However, the coup-de-gras was a baseball card album containing 70 cards (mostly 1957 & 1958) glued on paper sheets. The cover is made of cardboard with a large picture of Birdie Tebbetts pasted on the front. The white space between the cards is decorated with crayon. The cards easily steam off, but the album is so darned cute I just may leave it in its original state. Some kid put a lot of love into this collection a long time ago. Thank God for OBC Ramblings! My wife and son Dimitri were off camping last night, so Trent and I had steak, spanish rice, baguette and a Twins/Mariner game on TV to watch. I decided to put on the radio because Tom Paciorek has been "guest" announcing a few Mariner games (ones in the MIdwest), he sounds like Dennis Miller, is way funnier than Dennis, and is probably twice as smart. He, being of Polish persuasion, was able to translate the meaning of all the Twins' players' names who are Polish. "Fat Blackbird" and "Soft Feathery Bed" were two versions that caught my ear. But more amazingly, the radio airplay was 2-3 seconds faster (wait a minute, I can figure this out) I mean the cable delivery was 2-3 seconds SLOWER than the radio announcers -- (why is this Brian? Brian is now the CABLE GUY but bears no resemblance to Jim Carey). I actually achieved an altered state as I could hear the umpire scream STRIKE and hear the ball pop into the mitt, before the pitch arrived!! Wow, talk about a cheap evening's entertainment! Aaron Sele pitched a beautiful game and the M's won 4-0. The Humpdome (named after Hubert H. Humphrey -- the god of Minnesota politics) was packed and I even got to see Kirby Puckett for a moment up in the press booth. (Wow -- He looks like a very happy Buddha who hasn't stopped eating!). I was a hardcore Twins fan until I moved to Mariner-land in 1988. I like the Twins -- coach especially -- but that Metrodome has got to go........and so do I. This letter to the editor, of course, is in my name only and will in no way represent the position of OBC at all (I'll remove the "Chairman" line from my sig file). Would appreciate hearing of any improvements, etc. any of you might be able to suggest, especially those who have read the article. ==================================================================== An otherwise fine issue #28 of VBCB was rudely interrupted by an unfocused, arrogant, rambling, and contradictory article by Tony Galovich. Surely, some of it was intended to be sarcastic, but it is very difficult to tell the difference between his sarcasm and when he is genuinely wrong. His pandering, simplistic style is very similar to his previous efforts for Krause Publications and the pre-Krause "Tuff Stuff" and has no place in a magazine of the quality of VCBC. Mr. Galovich devotes much of his space harping on the dangers of doing business with dealers, anonymous card graders, and so forth, without scrutinizing their credentials and reputations. This opens the door to questioning Mr. Galovich's credentials as a columnist. In the early 1990's, he authored a series of articles appearing in the defunct Baseball Card News, representing himself as a card valuation expert, touting the undervaluation of certain specific subsets of Topps cards. Curiously, at the same time, he took out ads in Sports Collectors Digest, in which he was offering for sale the exact cards he was hyping in his articles in Baseball Card News. Mr. Galovich was the target of well-deserved criticism in early issues of Lew Lipset's "The Old Judge" newsletter, and he defended himself with a series of childish, schoolyard taunts against Mr. Lipset, a recognized vintage card expert. In his latest effort, to his credit, Mr. Galovich manages to avoid contradicting himself for as many as three paragraphs. His rhetorical question "How are some dealers staying in business today with profit margins shrinking to a percentage of what they were just a few short years ago" contradicts his later assertion "But I don't think any of the hobby's top dealers work as graders, not even part time. They can make much more money buying and selling than being a card grader." Ironically, his first reference laments the lack of high resale markups available via collections purchased by dealers from naive collectors these days, but his conclusion ("Good for dealers, bad for collectors") summarizes exactly the opposite position. Perhaps this is cleared up by Mr. Galovich's bizarre suggestion that dealers be excluded from card shows entirely, but at this point, it's anyone's guess what his intended point was. Mr. Galovich begins his letter asking "I'm curious what all those who laughed at me are thinking now." Personally, I'm still laughing, but it's more out of pity than amusement. He concludes his article with his "final thought for today is would you rather buy a box of raspberries or a Darryl Strawberry?" Honestly, I'd rather read an issue of VCBC that does not include Mr. Galovich's sophomoric, pointless rhetoric. Please consider omitting his material in the future, unless it improves Wayne Delia 3 Carpenter Drive Poughkeepsie, NY 12603 ========================================================================= Wayne M. I agree fully with him about the entertainment value. (Warning: This rambling ends up longer than most Morganti tomes... plan accordingly!) We have the Golden Spikes (AAA affiliate of the KC Royals) here in Omaha and I really enjoy their games. On 2-buck Tuesday, you can get the 2nd best seats in the house for $2 each. On Sundays, $6 gets the whole family in. Time's been so tight this summer that, ironically, most of the Spikes games I've taken in have involved a visitor who I was cheering for! As most of you know, the Minnesota Twins are my favorite team since childhood. Their AAA affiliate this year is the Edmonton Trappers (odd, as it has been the Salt Lake Buzz for many years...). On Thursday, July 21st, I had the pleasure of taking my daughter to a game between the Trappers and the Spikes. The extra-neat thing about it was that it was Negro League night and Buck O'Neil was present, throwing out the first pitch (to Warren Buffett, of all people!) and then signing free autographs to promote the Negro League Museum. How do they put it? -- Tickets to the ballgame, $10 (I popped for the best seats using a 2-for-1 coupon and an upgrade ) --Dippin' Dots $3.75 --Membership to the Negro League Museum, $10... --Taking a picture of your daughter with Buck O'Neil... priceless!! (http://members.aol.com/xtrjmx/buckwsarah.jpg) The game itself was really interesting, too. The Spikes dressed in the attire of the KC Monarchs (extremely sharp cream with red pinstripe uni's, all showing #25 on the back... Buck's old number!) while the Trappers donned the drab, ill-fitted uniforms of the Homestead Grays. Whatever advantage the Spikes had in uniforms didn't transfer to skills on the field. My Twinkies farm team thumped 'em 7-1! After the game, my daughter and I went down to the Edmonton dugout where my favorite Twins prospect, Bobby Kielty, tossed us a game-used ball! We took the ball down to the area of the stadium where the visitor's locker feeds out into the concourse and were able to get 19 of the 23 Trappers autographs, plus one coach (Phil Roof!). Kielty also allowed me to take a picture of Sarah with him, even though they were running late! What a neat guy! All in all, it was a *fantastic* night at the ballpark. The amazing thing about our wonderful evening was that it is not especially unique! Earlier this summer, I brought Sarah and her friend, Chelsea, to a game against the Iowa Cubs. Chelsea's family are huge Chicago Cubs fans, so she was all decked out in Cubs attire. Thought the IA Cubs lost 2-1, we got to see an amazing pitching performance by their starter and Roosevelt Brown hit the longest HR to right field I've ever seen hit at Rosenblatt Stadium with 2 out in the 9th inning. I swear that moonshot carried across the street to the parking lot of the Henry Doorly Zoo. After the game, we got to see terrific fireworks, went down and got some autographs (including Brown's) and a picture of the girls with future Cubs superstar Corey Patterson. As we were leaving, I wanted to show the girls the stadium again, as I love the way an empty stadium looks when the lights have gone down and it's so still and peaceful. As it turned out, the Cubs equipment manager was still down at the dugout loading up. After talking with him for a few minutes, he went back into the locker room and returned with three baseballs and two cracked bats for the girls! As if that wasn't enough, he then allowed the girls to get down on the field and run around the basepaths! There were a couple very excited young ladies on the way home that night. Oh, and one excited dad, too! One of the other games I've seen this summer was when I went down to Austin back on June 16. The Round Rock Express are located about 15 miles north of Austin and are the AA affiliate for the Houston Astros. Their owner was a pretty decent ballplayer, too... Nolan Ryan! It was my first AA league game and it was really neat. Another gorgeous stadium, we had "seats" on "t he berm"... a hill that borders the outfield. You bring your own blanket or lawn chair and have your pick of where you want to set up. It was really unique and very enjoyable. My dinner at the park was a very tasty Frito Pie from the Express Grille and another highlight of the evening was when the young lady carded me when I went to buy a beer (I'll be 40 in September!). The game was attended by a little more than ten thousand, bringing the total attendance in a year and two months over the 1-million fan mark!! To top it off, the good guys won, beating the Arkansas Travelers, with outfielder Jason Lane hitting his 25th HR of the year!! (He's cooled off... "only" at 29 now, more than a month later.) Anyway guys, like Mr. Hatch, I hope that you have the chance to enjoy some minor league ball. A good time will be had by all... Take care and have a terrific week... ================= Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 08:01:16 -0400 To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Your chance to be a webmaster! Thursdays, day or night games, it's $1 to get in with a coupon from that days sports section (I think canned goods donations work, too), and $1 for beer, hot dogs, or sodas all game. Legends Field is where the NY Yankees do their spring training and of course is a very nice stadium. They have monuments to all of the Yankees greats and plenty of parking. The gift shop is stocked with NY Yankees stuff and a hat rack for Tampa Yankees hats. Now, I'm not a Yankees fan by any stretch of the imagination... that day they were playing the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida Marlins system. It looks like Marlins have some good ballplayers on down the system, but it's early for most of these guys yet. Based on what I could tell from the league stats, it looks like the Florida League is more of a pitchers league, but I don't know enough about it. ================= Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 16:36:22 EDT Subject: getting good at deleting stuff i need To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Wite3@aol.com first it was my #s grid, now i realize that my obc directory is gone too...can whoever is in charge shoot me a copy of the current directory, i have packages to send with no addresses!!! ================= To: Subject: Dis 'n Dat Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 16:46:04 -0700 From: "Grant Rainsley" First, Jenny got a couple of OBC Get Well cards today...and was really quite thrilled. He wants to know how it started, who's in it, and more about OBC. I can't think of any downside to this, if anything it gives more positive exposure to the best damn group on the Web. During the game, one player is chosen as the "Beer Batter", and if he gets a hit, beer is a buck a cup for the next 10 minutes. Fortunately, Mr. Jose Garcia went 4 for 4 and we enjoyed many a discounted brew. The opponent this evening was the Billings Mustangs (Cincinnati Reds affiliate)-they were managed by one of my all-time favorite players, Rick Burleson. The hometown 9 pulled out a 9-4 victory, improving their record to 16-20 on the season. The Dodgers play in a 60 year old stadium with adequate seating, but in dire need of updating. A bond issue to build a new stadium was soundly defeated this spring, but the ownership, which is made up of several local businessmen, are pursuing other alternatives, including renovation. Dear Fer., I'm flattered that you wrote to me asking for advice, but I have to confess that I am kind of a small time collector, and probably not in your league at all. 91 cards! Man where do you keep them all? Do you realize that this is the equivalent of 6 packs of baseball cards?!?! Wow, I can sympathize with your plight, brother. Now, you're lucky that these cards are from the highly prized 40 years of baseball set, manufactured by Topps OVER 10 YEARS AGO, so you and I both know we're talking about a vintage goldmine here. Unlike some things you may have purchased in 1991, these cards (assuming they are in pretty good shape, and knowing you, Fernando, my buddy, they probably are) have retained some of their original value. I don't want to get your hopes up to high, but, I have to say, if an item like this was to come up at auction, I would expect that it would receive, conservatively, and I stress conservatively, somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 cents. However, if you were willing to throw in free shipping, and who isn't these days, you might find somebody willing to offer as much as ninety-five cents for this lot! Not me, of course, but someone. Maybe. "Is it possible to sell" you ask? Fernando. This is the USA! It's possible to sell ANYTHING. Or at least to try to sell it. Whatever, give it a shot, my friend. And let me know what happens! But even if things don't work out, at least you still have your song. And that's more than most of us can claim... There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando... They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando... Though I never thought that we could lose There's no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando... Marks post regarding his trade of a 64 Roger Maris brought back a memory of a trade I didn't make. In 1970 I was 8 years old and the world's biggest Yaz fan. My best fried, Joey Mari was a Rico Petrocelli man. Even at that young age I had many shoeboxes full of cards going all the way back to 1967. One card I didn't have was a Yaz of any year. I had the 69 Deckle and the 70 Scratch off, but no Topps regular issue. In fact I'd never even seen one. My friend Joey was in the same predicament regarding Rico. Every Wednesday we'd walk to the candy store and spend our allowance on BB cards. Sure enough, one Wednesday I pull a Rico Petrocelli Sporting News All Star card out of the pack. My friend was beside himself. Would I trade the card for Willie Mays? - No. Willie Mays and a stack of Red Sox cards? - No. This went on for the rest of the afternoon until Joey finally offered me every baseball card, matchbox, GI Joe, airplane model, basically every possession he owned. I thought it over long and hard and said NO! I couldn't let him reach his quest of a Rico Petrocelli card until I got my Yaz. Besides, I liked Rico too! The next day his sister went to by a loaf of bread for his mother and bought a pack of baseball cards with the change, she approached us on the street and handed Joey a Rico Petrocelli card. "Thought you might like this", she said. She also gave Joey a dime, I walked to the store with him and watched him buy a pack of cards. First card out of the pack - Rico Petrocelli All Star card. By the end of the week we were swimming in Rico Petrocelli All star cards! ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Fwd: historic baseball print Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2001 01:51:44 From: "jeff sinclair" fellas, this may outdate us but still.... do you remember.... >From: "Steve Goedert" >To: "chris" , "Jeff" , "Vargo >Vargo" >Subject: historic baseball print >Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 09:55:16 -0400 >Get more from the Web. As you may know, Dan is in the process of overhauling the Hall of Mediocrity page on the OBC site. He has added, or will be adding, card checklists, pictures and links to each player's page (did you know there is actually a Dickie Thon fan site with dues-paying members numbering in the tens?? There is - www.dickiethon.com - check it out!). Part of that page includes a list of that player's cards. That's where you come in. If possible, will each player's nominator compile as complete a list as possible of your player's cards. These can include main issues (Topps, Bowmanetc.), regional issues and other oddballs. I was going through my SCD annual looking for Rick Monday stuff, and there were lots of items in there. A lot of them aren't cards the way we think of them, but collecting discs and other oddball stuff is a lot of fun. Also, with the current frenzy in the UV end of the hobby, some players have had cards reissued or other cardsmade honoring them. Put those on the list if you'd like. Some other things your player's page can use? Any interesting links of your player, such as the above Dickie Thon site. Also, why did you nominate your player? Write up a short 1-3 paragraph account of why your player warranted enshrinement in the HOM.. Those OBCers that don't know much about the HOM and would like to participate, here is the skinny, direct from the HOM page: The HOM is a place where great players of the past, who have little hope ofentering the hall of fame, are honored for their careers which brought joyto many fans. Mediocrity - The word mediocrity is not in any way to be taken as a slam against these guys. The word mediocre has its' origin in the Old Latin, and literally means "half way up the hill," which all of these guys certainly were. In our opinion, anyone who ever got to throw one pitch, or had only oneat bat, or only got to pinch-run once, made it! RULES of eligibility: a.. No chance of ever making the "real" Hall b.. Must have played in the majors (or had a baseball card issued) prior to c.. Must be nominated by a current OBC member d.. So while I was there, I took my two oldest boys to the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame. I would recommend it highly. It isn't Cooperstown, but the setup is nice, there are films, tons of memorabilia and baseball cards (oh gosh, my sons mad to pull me away when I saw the 54, 55 and 57 Ted Williams in lovely shape in cubicles). And the Hitters Hall of Fame is a treat. It costs $9 for adults and $1 for kids. You could easily spend two hours there (I did). One of the neatest exhibits was donated by a man who was the Red Sox clubhouse boy in 1939. On scraps of paper, he got autographs from all the teams that came through. He kept them and the museum has it mounted in a frame. What autographs! All American Leaguers of course. Bob Feller, Hank Greenberg, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, Williams of course, Ted Lyons, Joe McCarthy. I could go on. There are a bunch of autographs from Hall of Famers. I read each signature and was amazed. Anyway, if you ever get to Florida, it is worth going out of the way to see the place. ================= Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 22:42:27 -0500 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Sportsfest - OBC friendly dealer info From: Michael Wierzbicki Hi, gang! I am going through a very difficult time right now. My wife of 26 years LuAnn has moved out from me and my kids. I became a born again Christian in 1986 with 10 years of marriage and four kids under my belt. But my wife has never followed my beliefs although she has tried. My wife also suffers from depression, is seeing a psychiatrist, and is taking hard core drugs Serzone and Effexor. I have found out that for the past 10 months or so she has been sleeping around and is currently sleeping with another guy. This is way out of character for her. I still love her and want her back home with us. I am totally dependent on God to help me through this "The joy of the Lord is my strength" Neh 8:10 whatever the outcome. I have been meeting with my Pastor and this helps. I have made some mistakes too. We got so caught up in baseball and softball with our kids that we forgot about us. Still this is something you work on not leave your spouse. I have thought about resigning from OBC and selling off my collection on ebay. My cards do not seem important right now. I may still do this, I hope you understand. I am not writing this so you guys will Stan Hack me with a big gift PLEASE do not do this. I do not want you guys to run up any auctions I might hold either. But I do want my friends to know that I am going through a bad time right now. I am asking that any Christians out there pray that God would have mercy on LuAnn and call her unto salvation. ================= Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2001 16:50:21 -0000 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Stepping out for a few days.. A search of the internet reveals a few references to them from 1913 to WWII. These cigarettes were "reprinted" many years ago - in the 70's I think although I really don't know. I do know my pack has the surgeon general's warning on the side, so it obviously is not an original oldie. Still a really nead item, however. Attached is a scan for those interested. My sister called to let me know my older brother Tannie (some of you met him at the Atlanta National Show) had suffered a heart attack. The good news is he is stable and they hope to do a procedure tomorrow to avoid by-pass surgery. One of his arteries is 100% blocked and needs immediate attention. The doctors feel the procedure should work without having to do by-pass (I have my fingers crossed and we are praying). I did talk to him this morning and he was in good spirits and even teasing me about swiping all his baseball cards (that convinced me he was doing pretty good). My family keeps me informed and I will know more after the procedure tomorrow morning. I am planning on sending him some cards (baseball of course) to try and cheer him up. If any of you would like to help in the effort (please don't feel obligated) his favorite player is George Brett, but anything would bring a smile to his face! He is loyal to the Atlanta Braves and new or old would be well received! His mailing address follows and I am sure any get well cards from OBC (He knows us well) would be a tonic to him right now: Tannie Walter Ellison III 2604 Triple Crown Drive Florence, South Carolina 29505 On another sad note, after hearing about my brother I read "Guru's" email and sent him a reply I will keep between him and I. I hope others will send him messages of support as I know it will help! OBC has been a part of my life for over a decade now and I know what the group can do to lift spirits in times like this! I am proud to be a part of this group and I have witnessed the miracles in the past and know I will again. Larry if you are reading this please know our hearts and prayers are with you! You and Geordie deserve a LOT of credit for putting this together. You're going to make Grant look so smart and polished, I just hope he remembers that when he becomes famous :-) I'll be working on my notes for Bubba and will pass them on soon. - Rick ================= Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 18:30:32 EDT Subject: Fwd: To: prewartraders@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Jrhatchjr@aol.com Can anyone help this gentleman? Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 23:11:58 -0700 From: "Dave Fallen" I knew Topps cards often had wrong-back but I never realized Fleer had themtoo. I was putting 3 1960 Fleer cards into a frame to send to a lady I met in Hawaii recently. This woman is in her 80's and as a little girl used to play catch with Paul (Big Poison) Waner, Lloyd (Little Poison) Waner, and Pie Traynor - all neighbors. Anyway, after screwing the thing together Ichecked the back of the frame and found that the Paul Waner card, which should have been #76, had instead the back of #5 Grover Cleveland Alexander. I don't suppose anyone has an extra 1960 Fleer #76 Paul Waner card sitting around that they would care to donate to this project? -Dave Fallen
