The cover is Ichiro, and in the inside article ("Orient Express") OBC's Rob Fitts is quoted very extensively - "Japanese baseball card expert" Fitts, that is. It gives Rob a (actually several) very nice plugs and gives his web address www.robsjapanesecards.com. I for one hope this gooses Rob's business substantially. Rob cites the 1993 BBM Ichiro Suzaki card as being the most sought affter Japanese card on the market. Second place goes to a vintage card - the 1959Marakami Sadaharu Oh. He played for Philadelphia in 1906 appearing in 6 games, 42 innings, with an ERA of 3.59. He played for Boston and StLouis in 1911, going a total of 8 games, 28 innings, with an ERA of 6.11. Now, for the main reason for this note. You may have noticed I have been even less active than usual lately. There is a reason, other than my procrastination. For the last year and a half we have been working on adopting a daughter(s) from the Ukraine. Well, we're in the home stretch, and next weekwe leave for what will probably be a 4 week stay in the Ukraine. Now, none of us has ever left the US before (except for southern Canada, which doesn't count--other than the funny looking money, there's not much difference). We are taking our two teenage boys. So the four of us, speaking zero words of Ukranian between us, will be heading off for quite an adventure. Needless to say, the preparation for this has taken up a fair amount of our time, and thus OBC time has dwindled. When we come back I imagine it'll be the same for a few months--having a new family member who can't speak a word of your language certainly will make life interesting. We don't know if wewill end up adopting one or two girls yet (between 5-9 years old, probably). So, I'll be unregistering from the servers until we get back. If you were thinking of sending me cards, please hold up, as they'll be sitting in the post office, and who knows what they do to mail there--might even end up with bullet holes in them. Talk to you all later. ================= Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 20:14:17 -0500 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Moving On, 20 months later. While it's only 13 miles away, it's a whole different world. 11 years ago when I accepted a manufacturing managers job on the south side of Chicago (Blue Island),I no idea where I wanted to live. Settled on a small 3 bedroom home in Hammond In. until I could make up my mind. About two years ago we (the collection) had out grown the house. Had to toss the we in, Denise thinks the new house it cause of her. New house is at the end of the housing world as Chicargo knows it. Mainly farm land to the south, east and west. Another 15 years and it will just be another suburb. For the time being it will be just fine. Started looking for a place in November of 99. In looking for a ranch no more than 3 years old 1900 + square feet, and a basement, the selections were far and few between in the area I wanted to be in. What I did find just did not make the grade. Plenty of square footage, with many small rooms, or less rooms larger size, but under 1900 sq. ft. Found a few new constuction ones that could have worked. Problem was they were constucted like shit. With all the new construction in a 50 mile radius of Chicago anyone with a pickup truck calls themselves a builder, and one with a truck and cell phone thinks they are a general contractor. Finally found one that fit the needs in size, room layout, and had quality construction. It was sold. Meet with the builder in early May of 2000 and new this was the person to use to build a new home. He said no problem when I asked if I could do the plans and would he build it. Finished the plans in early June. A few modifications by the builder ( I didn't leave enough room for head clearance going down the basement stairs) and we did a hand shake things were on their way. It's done, we closed on June 8th. The vault ( as Rick E. calls it) moves tomorrow. Forget the house in general, the vault is the important room. While it's not complete yet, had builder frame in it. 950 square feet + -, dedicated to all the items that have been in boxes, closets, and stacked in spare bedrooms. Hope to have it all done by the time the natl. comes to Chicago in 2002. While we haven't got past the 2001 natl, which I may or may not be able to make, plans are under way for 2002. Were about 1 hour away from the Natl. 95% of which is Interstate. Time to pull the plug and pack the puter. Be back on line in 3 to 5 days. I GOT UM, YOU NEED UM, YOU GET UM. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: some thanks and some ramble Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 02:11:57 From: "jeff sinclair" hey guys, thanks go out to rick svetecz for a 9 pack of 69's, to greg conway for a 12 pack of 69's including billy williams, lyle, john, and some hi #'s. thanks rick and greg. i will be going on my yearly scout week starting sunday (happy fathers day!). as a cub/boy scout leader its going to be quite a week. first we're off to "heritage reservation" near uniontown, pa. with 30 cub scouts age 9 and under for three days of camping adventure. home for kennywood day (a local amusement park with some great coasters) on wednesday. recuperate thursday then off to gettysburg with 15 boy scouts friday-sunday. we will sleep on one of the battlefields and this should be a great trip. my oldest son (matt) is a first class boy scout working on becoming a star scout and the youngest (adam) is a bear cub scout. because of work i can't coach sports so i became active in scouting not realizing that it takes even more time. i love it! i will try my best to get out the packages sitting around my computer before i leave and know i will have more "retributions" due when i return. this is truly a great bunch of guys with a passion for baseball. cool! do you remember the feel of the candy store steps? From: nthomas@pol.net ...but I know when I 'll back again--Tuesday. Time to brag one more time and let you guys know I will be out of touch for a few days. We will fly out of Baltimore this morning, and be in Chicago before noon. Quick drive to Milwaukee, and will be at Miller Park tonight to see the new park. Saturday and Sunday we will be at what I hear is the second greatest park around (next to The Fens, of course), Wrigley field, with Sunday being out in the sun in the bleachers. THen Monday night at Comiskey before flying home Tuesday. A full report will follow. Thanks to everyone who gave me info about the two cities, and all of the offers to meet up or crash at your house, etc. But I am afraid I will have to pass this time. I promised Terri that this would just be the two of us, sort of like a second honeymoon--it's our first trip alone since before the boys were born, so she is the center of my attention this weekend--she evens keeps score at the games when I go on beer runs!Of course, if we happen to run into a card store or Have a good weeekend all. I hope the Red SOx don't embarass the Braves too much this weekend, Brock! ================= Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 06:58:36 -0400 (EDT) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OCTraders@yahoogroups.com, vct@yahoogroups.com Subject: Leavin'.......on a jet plane.... Also, my main web page is temporarily down for now, so go to what used to be my UV page and I am up to date. You can find it at http://hometown.aol.com/bdangelo/myhomepage/index.html -- or just copy the link at the bottom of my original home page. I realize that my "new" page has some UV stuff on it (a bit of a violation of OBC rules), but I can assure you that once I get my main page back,I will put it back to normal. So please bear with me. This year, we will be setting sail from New York to Bermuda (which is the reason my plans for the National got axed. Don't cry for me, though :-) One of my favorite pastimes on a cruise ship is to sit by the pool with a drink at my side and a baseball book on my lap. This year, I thought I'd read Leo Durocher's "Nice Guys Finish Last." So, this morning I went down to my local library, figuring they'd have a copy as its really not that obscure. Well, guess what! They didn't! Nothing else really appealed to me, but I did check out Robert Creamer's "Babe" just in case (I read "Stengel" a couple of years ago...two thumbs up!). Does anyone have a copy of "Nice Guys Finish Last" that they could lend to me for a couple of weeks? If so, please e-mail me first, as I only need one copy...I'll confirm back to you. Otherwise, I'd be afraid that one day next week I'll have 15 copies tied to my mailbox! Many thanks! ================= Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 12:32:30 EDT Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Library loan needed --> Great Dodger book! To: Jrhatchjr@aol.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Sweendoger@aol.com I'm reading a great book right now. I know that at least Geordie and Peter would love it. It came out this year and is called "True Blue" by Steve Delsohn. It is the history of the Dodgers, as told by the Dodgers themselves. It has incredible stories for each season...lots of inside I just finished reading the 1962 chapter, where all of the politics between the players, Alston, and Durocher were .. good stuff In a message dated 6/16/01 9:04:19 AM Pacific Daylight Time, Jrhatchjr@aol.com writes: > Subj: [OBC-Ramblings] Library loan needed > Date: 6/16/01 9:04:19 AM Pacific Daylight Time > From: Jrhatchjr@aol.com > To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com > In two weeks, my family will be taking its annual cruise vacation. "You can observe a lot just by watching." "He must have made that before he died." -- Referring to a Steve McQueen "I want to thank you for making this day necessary." -- On Yogi Berra Appreciation Day in St. Louis in 1947. "I'd find the fellow who lost it, and, if he was poor, I'd return it." -- When asked what he would do if he found a million dollars. "Think! How the hell are you gonna think and hit at the same time?" "You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there." "I knew I was going to take the wrong train, so I left early." "If you don't know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else." "If you can't imitate him, don't copy him." "You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six." "Baseball is 90% mental -- the other half is physical." "It was impossible to get a conversation going; everybody was talking too "Slump? I ain't in no slump. I just ain't hitting." "A nickel isn't worth a dime today." "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded." "It gets late early out there." -- Referring to the bad sun conditions in left field at the stadium. "Glen Cove." -- Referring to Glenn Close on a movie review television show. Once, Yogi's wife Carmen asked, "Yogi, you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you go before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?" Yogi replied, "Surprise me." "Do you mean now?" -- When asked for the time. "The wind always seems to blow against catchers when they are running." "I take a two hour nap, from one o'clock to four." "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." "You give 100 percent in the first half of the game, and if that isn't enough in the second half you give what's left." "90% of the putts that are short don't go in." "I made a wrong mistake." "Texas has a lot of electrical votes." -- During an election campaign, after George Bush stated that Texas was important to the election. "Thanks, you don't look so hot yourself." -- After being told he looked cool. "I always thought that record would stand until it was broken." "Yeah, but we're making great time!" -- In reply to "Hey Yogi, I think we're lost." "If the fans don't come out to the ball park, you can't stop them." "Why buy good luggage? You only use it when you travel." "It's never happened in the World Series competition, and it still hasn't." "How long have you known me, Jack? And you still don't know how to spell my name." -- Upon receiving a check from Jack Buck made out to "bearer." "I'd say he's done more than that." -- When asked if first baseman Don Mattingly had exceeded expectations for the current season. "The other teams could make trouble for us if they win." "He can run anytime he wants. I'm giving him the red light." -- On the acquisition of fleet Ricky Henderson. "I never blame myself when I'm not hitting. I just blame the bat, and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn't my fault that I'm not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?" "It ain't the heat; it's the humility." "The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase." "You should always go to other people's funerals; otherwise, they won't come to yours." "I didn't really say everything I said." There are 12 of us playing. We're using "teams" for this first season. '67 Red Sox, '60 Pirates, '56 Dodgers, etc. However, I'm still tinkering with my idea of a salary cap league. Each team would get a million bucks to make a team. (We're using the 60's salary scale. The highest paid player would be around $100,000.) From that, you'd have to sign 25 players to form your roster. There would be injuries, some as long as 15 or even 60 days, especially to the more injury-prone players. So, you'd need to have decent backups. You could still draft a few star players - just not ALL star players, just like a real time would have to do. My salary cap still needs some tinkering, but following is what I came up for a team after a quick "draft". A few quick qualifiers: I only used players who debuted in the 1950's for this sample. The final player available list would be at least 50's through 80's. This was meant just to give you an idea. Koufax came out with a lower salary than you might think, because "lifetime" stats were used. Although Sandy had the several great years, his overall career was relatively short, cutting down on his durability. A team drafting him would need a good #5 starter to fill in for him occasionally. Anyway, take a look. If we have enough interest, I'll keep $ 48,390 $ 66,314 $ 76,110 $ 46,385 $ 49,461 $ 49,867 $ 99,656 $ 60,403 St. Claire $ 13,084 $ 13,272 $ 12,046 $ 10,648 $ 8,468 $ 13,606 $ 20,384 $ 88,321 $ 68,116 $ 80,435 $ 64,412 $ 7,772 $ 10,758 $ 12,745 $ 10,675 $ 29,054 $ 38,580 ================= Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2001 12:15:45 EDT Subject: 65 Topps embossed -- available To: From: bdangelo@aol.com Hi guys, I have the following Topps embossed from the 1965 set up for grabs. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: XDDX@aol.com Hey gang- Spent a good part of my time at the show yesterday at OBC favorite Roger Neufeldt's table. Bought a number of things from him including an American Caramel "Eddie Collins" for $18 that had been glued into a book. All in all, this was another disappointing show. Of the tables that actually had some older material only a few of those had anything off-grade. I picked up a few odds and ends, including a cheap 63Fleer Wills RC under the assumption someone needed one (if that someone is you, let me know), but no real damage to my wantlist. I think it'd be great fun if we could get enough guys to make a real league. Here are the first drafts of the salaries for players who made their debutsin the 50's. They're based on lifetime stats. Give it a try, see if you can pick a 30 man roster (5 minor leaguers in case of injury) for under a million bucks! Keep in mind, you have to have enough ab's to make it through the season, around 5200 for a 154 game, non DH season, and enough IP's, around 1400. You can have a few Manny Mota PH types, but if you have too many, you'll end up with a pitcher playing LF in September. Click on the links, it'll take you right to the web page. As you can tell by the length of this, we had a great trip. We arrived in Chicago on Friday afternoon, picked up our car, and drove straight to Milwaukee. Checked in, napped and headed to Miller Park. What a place this is..spacious, clean, and a very friendly staff. Got to our seats about 30 minutes before game time and filled in the lineups on the score sheet, then wandered around a bit. This reminded me a lot of The Jake in Cleveland. The first inning was unremarkable, but the Brewers never came out on the field in the 2nd. After a few minutes, they announced that they were having lighting difficulties, and to “Please Be Patient”. Well, in the next hour, we got friendly with everyone around us, drank a few beers, and waited….and waited….and waited. Finally, we went exploring some more, and found a Sports Bar on the same level we were at. The Sixers were just starting, so we sat down and watched. After another hour, they announced the game was canceled, and they would make it up on Saturday at noon. Since we had Cubs tickets on Saturday at 3:05, this did us little good. So we sat and watched the Sixers get smoked, headed back to the hotel, and went to sleep. At least the Brewers allowed the tickets from the canceled game to be used anytime for the rest of the season, and they are on their way to Mike Wierzibicki to use at his leisure, so all is not lost! We woke up Saturday, and headed to the Miller Brewery for a tour and free samples—great place if you ever get up there. Then headed to Chicago, checked in to our hotel, and headed to Wrigley. The area around Wrigley is great—friendly, clean and safe. We parked about a mile and a half from the field, and walked in. My first view of Wrigley was from our seat just to the right of home plate—what a place this is. I still think Fenway is the best place in the world, but if I wasn;t a Red Sox die-hard, I might have second thoughts—this place is like a clean, open, up to date Fenway. Cubs fans are friendly and there to enjoy the game and each other. We saw a homerfest (Sosa had 2 of the Cubs 5) and the crowd left happy. We wandered around the park, hit some tourist shops, and I bought some Wrigley T-shirts for the boys. Stopped by Pizzaria UNO (may be the best pizza in the world) and then home to catch the end of the Red Sox on TV. Sunday was an early day at the park. We had bleachers seats, and since it is first-come, first seated, we got to the park about 3 hours before game time (10:20 am). We took turns waiting in line and wandering around the park, and I picked up my first non-Red Sox hat in years—a Cubs hat. When the gates opened, we were about 20th in line, and headed right for the Right Field Bleachers we have heard so much about. We ended up right behind Sammy Sosa, so close that we could spit on him (not that I would ever do that, unless he was a Yankee!) I was turned into an instant Cubs fan and Sosa fan that day. He is by far the most interactive major leaguer I have ever seen! He responds to every yell, and will answer with fingers “How many outs, Sammy?”—even if it’s 20 times an inning. And he signals to the crowd every time he tells everyone else how many outs there are. He smiles at jokes, throws balls to kids, and loves the crowd. What a guy—I hope he is still that interactive when the boys are old enough to sit out there. It was about 95 degrees and sunny, so we cooked while we ate, drank, and laughed with the regular Bleacher Bums. I did get yelled at by swiping a piece of Ivy (It pays to have monkey arms!) but other than that, everyone was great! IF YOU EVER GET TO CHICAGO, YOU NEED TO SEE A GAME AT WRIGLEY—IT IS A GREAT EXPERIENCE! Needless to say, we were wiped out by the time the 3 ½ hour game ended. (Cubs Win….Cubs Win….Cubs Win….) Stopped at a Steak House for dinner, and crashed early. Sunday was spent doing some souvenir shopping, and then we ate lunch at a place called Gameworks—and I found Nirvana—this place was loaded with the most intense video games you ever saw. Terri left me there for a few hours and went shopping, and I played every type of game imaginable—what a blast. We headed to Comiskey for the final game of our trip, and found that Comiskey was easier to find (and park at) than Wrigley, but in my opinion, that is the only advantage. It was a nice park—clean, open, great seat, and easy access to beer, food, etc, but it reminded me too much of the cookie cutter parks I have grown to dislike (The Vet, 3 Rivers, Riverfront). Maybe it was being so smitten with Wrigley, but there wasn’t anything that made it stand out. Saw a great 5-4 game (making us 3 for 3 with a push as far as home teams go) and headed home. Left early Tuesday morning for home. All in all, a great trip (I kept telling Terri how great of a trip this was, and she agreed). If you read this far, thanks for indulging me, and head my advice----get to Wrigley and Fenway while they (and you) are still around—they are what baseball is all about! ================= To: Subject: OBC Top 3 Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 08:13:13 -0400 From: "Chuck Paris" Does anybody still use this listing? http://members.home.net/chuckparis/obctop3.html I haven't updated it in a long time but will if there is interest. I'm having hotmail woes...] ** Sizzling Summer Sale! The Ron Kingsbury Collection! ** Friends, after months of negotiation and much haggling, we have acquired from former OBC member and good guy Ron Kingsbury a small lot of old baseball cards for an exclusive Tipton Mint offering. These cards are NOT available to the general public and are offered here for our valued customers only. [Basically the deal with Ron was, I stop by his office and say hello and he hands me a stack of cards to send out to whoever can use To be fair, we must say a few words about the condition of this lot. Those of you who know Ron know that he collects cards in pretty decent shape, and even his castoffs often look pretty good, as do these. Sadly, they are not at all in keeping with the strict Tipton Mint minimum esthetic sensibility standards (mess). In other words, this junk is just not bad enough for us and it's gotta go! I've looked at each of these cards and, with only a few exceptions, there isn't a heavy crease or a torn corner or a ripped off back or a scuffed up front in the bunch. Stains? Forget it. How about a little mildew? Get serious. Staple holes, punched holes, thumbtack marks? Nope. There's only a couple of cards that even have any writing on them and what's there is totally feeble; no crossed off team names, no facial hair, no autographs. I got an e-mail from Kevin's friend looking to trade for the All-Star and League Leader subsets. The problem however, is that Topps didn't issue complete teams for a couple years between 1975-1981. Here's what I discovered from looking over the wantlist/have list and double checking with my big picture filled book of Topps cards - The AL was shortchanged a few times, aside from losing most of the actual games... I collected All-Star team sets in addition to the complete Topps sets when I was a kid. 1975: (only 2 AL OF'ers) 1978: (only 2 AL OF'ers again) 1979: (No AL SS) 1981: (Only 2 AL OF'ers a third time) Anyone know whose card shoulda been different and why Topps only had eight man teams? The Indians play both Fri and Sat against the Royals, so I thought I'd put it out there as a possibility (since I can't see great odds of making it out to the Jake again in the near future). Some of those are tough to find. (Anyone with a spare 63 Bob Aspromonte?). 3. Despite their great start, I can't get too excited about my beloved Twins' chances for post-season. When it comes to late season maneuvers which teams do you think will make the big roster additions? 4. Let's take an informal poll: At what point do you add the insurance for an E-bay purchase? The few times that it occurred Doug, I did it by mistake. It use to irritate me when someone I knew bid against me on an item, but I have found that sooner or later you will get the card you are looking for. It might be by purchasing it at an auction like eBay, or an OBC'er will send it to you, or you get it at a show like the National (if you can get there!!!). Or some guy named Stan Hack will blast you with it!!! At any rate there is plenty of this cardboard to go around and if you don't get something this time - don't worry - another opportunity will present itself!!! 2) The Posties are tough, there's no doubt about it. A while back I did some research on `61 Post cereal set and with all the newcomers to OBC I'll post that info again: The question of distinguishing between Post Box and Commercially distributed cards can be a bit tricky to answer. Some of the COM cards are distinctive with different wording for example the BOX cards for the Twins (#91 - #100) indicate Minneapolis Twins the COM version states Minnesota Twins. This is because the COM version was produced later than the BOX, therefore the COM version has other individual cards that have updated info. Here is a rundown of those differences: #30 COM Gene Freese - Reds, #30 BOX Gene Freese - White Sox #41 COM Frank Bolling - Braves, #41 BOX Frank Bolling - Tigers #51 COM Willie Tasby - Sold to Wash, #51 BOX - sold not mentioned #55 COM F. Sullivan - Phillies, #55 BOX - Red Sox #57 COM H. Kuenn - Giants, #57 BOX - Indians #65 COM B. Aspromonte - Sold to LA, #65 BOX - sold not mentioned #89 COM K. Hamlin - Sold to LA, #89 BOX - sold not mentioned #109 COM B. Bruton - Tigers, #109 BOX - Braves #124 COM G. Conley - Red Sox, #124 BOX - Phillies #142 COM J. Antonelli - Cleveland, #142 BOX - San Francisco #146 COM W. Kirkland - Cleveland, #146 BOX - San Francisco #190 COM B. Martin - Sold to Milw., #190 BOX - sold not mentioned Another difference between the two types of cards is the thickness of the card stock. The BOX version is on thick cardboard stock used to make the cereal boxes. The COM version was printed of thinner cardboard stock and printed by Post in team sheets. To make things even more difficult in the `61 Post set some cards are only available in the BOX version, while four cards #5 - Bob Turley, #73 Chuck Estrada, #94 Chuck Stobbs and #106 Eddie Mathews are only available in the COM printing. Here is a listing of the BOX only variations: #10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 29, 32, 34, 66, 70, 78, 79, 111, 112, 113, 114, 134, 135, 139, 140, 151, 153A (Sold to Milw), 153B (Sale not mentioned), 154, 155, 162, 163, 165, 169, 170, and 183. So there are 35 cards that are not available on the COM set and 4 cards unavailable in the BOX version. To make a complete set therefore you have to combine at least a few cards to do it. There are 357 cards available from both versions and with that there are some Short Prints to mention as well. The following are short prints from the set which are BOX and COM only cards: #10, 23, 70, 73, 94, 113, 135, 163, and 183. The `61 Post set presents a lot of challenges but it is a "great" OBC type set. Since these cards were cut off cereal boxes in the `60's sharp corners, straight edges, perfect centering, etc... are rare to find so many of these cards are sold at bargain prices, even the hard to find ones. Most of my specimens are in typical OBC shape - and that is OK with me. 3) The Tigers might sell the ranch again to get a guy who will "bolt" the team as soon as he has the chance ( The Juan Gonzalas deal has to rank up there with one of the worst trades the Tigers ever made) 4) Insurance on incomings - I don't get it and I have been lucky to not have experienced any of the problems that some of the OBC brethren have incurred. Perhaps as Al suggests, on a BIG TICKET item I might consider it. 5) Just do what I have done - start working on every set imaginable and eventually you will collect them all. Some sets that I collect will take years and years to collect - all of the 50's sets have key cards that will cost you plenty - my `54 Topps set is down to a dozen or so ALL TOUGHIES. It will take years to get these 12 cards - but I'll find them and in the meantime I can finish off that `65 OPC set that I just added. If your collecting for the long haul and enjoy the hobby and expect to be a lifelong collector then dream big. Just check out my want list - just like the energizer bunny it keeps going and going and going......... So you asked for it and I delivered - Ken might even be proud!!! GOOD NIGHT TO ALL!!! The drive in was uneventful, just long - about six hours from my aunt's... which is about six hours from my house, so at least the trip was broken up evenly. After checking in, I went outside to get my bags out of the car. On my way back through the lobby, the clerk at the desk told me I already had a phone call. Steve Rittenberg had timed my arrival almost perfectly (He had just checked in himself) and we went out to eat dinner with my friend Mike and his family, who had all arrived the day before. After dinner, we set out in search of the IX center, where the show is going to be held. We found it in very little time, despite my incorrect assertions that it was located in the heart of downtown Cleveland. It's actually located very close to the hotels Steve and I are staying at. In fact, it's practically IN the airport, which BTW is nowhere near the downtown area . Steve stopped by my hotel room and rummaged through my dupes boxes before we called it a night. Tuesday morning: after enjoying my free continental breakfast, I got a phone call from Steve and headed over to his hotel room to wait and see if Howard left a message. After not hearing from Old Grizzly, we set out for Kevin Savage's warehouse - located a mere 100 miles or so away near Toledo. The place was half what I should have expected, but better than I had feared (if that makes sense). I was hoping it was full of boxes and boxes of somewhat searched through collections of 60's and 70's cards. I was warned by Steve before we left that it was probably all 80's and 90's stuff. It ended up somewhere in between, but still worth the drive in. We spent the afternoon sorting out a couple 5000 count boxes of 70's hockey and pulling a few hundred off our respective wantlists as we did. Steve started a couple new hockey sets in the process... or MAY have started them, since as of this writing, I still haven't heard a figure on the damage. A quick stop at McDonald's for a bite to eat, then back on the road to attempt to break the land speed record back to Cleveland. I did well on the time of the trip We headed straight for the IX Center for the VIP/Corporate Block party. The party was a lot of fun, but there wasn't as much neat stuff given away as the one I went to last year. No free packs, but you could win some 1999 Topps packs playing carnival type games. I got one by hitting one of those near impossible ring toss games - the first time I've ever seen ANYONE win that and I only get one lousy pack?!?! Well, the one I chose had a Ryan reprint in it, so I guess it wasn't too bad. Speaking of beginner's luck, Steve hit a golf putt and got entered to win a cool Tiger Woods signed picture. He said it was the first time he had hit a golf ball in years... and he may have done it opposite handed! (Neither way felt comfortable, but he just hit it in - has Joel been giving him lessons?) He missed out on the raffle, so we returned to his hotel room to bust open a box of heritage hockey. It was neat, except for the serially numbered rookies that make up 1/6 of the set - we got two out of 25 or so. I enjoyed the gum in the packs too. The cards are supposed to resemble 1954-55 hockey or something close to that year. Steve had a few REAL 54-55 cards that I liked a lot better... at least they weren't mint. That should pretty much get you up to date on the local happenings. Today is seminar day. I will not be able to attend, however. Instead of learning how to buy and sell cards on eBay (as if I needed to do that NOW), I have opted to take a trip with my friend Mike to the pro FB HOF in Canton. I've driven by five Halls of Fame on my trip here (basketball, baseball, boxing, football, as well as rock and roll) and this may come as a shock to you: I have never been to any single one of them! That black spot on my personal resume' gets erased today and I hope to cross off most of those places in the near future. That's all for now. I'll be relaying the swap session recap and some other show stories as soon and as fast as I can... unlike my driving, my internet access speed isn't pushing any limits ;-) TAYL, Ken M ================= Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 10:42:36 -0500 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Madison From: john harrell The second OBC South gathering in Madison took place this past Saturday and while the numbersm weren't quite up to the first gathering, a lot of cardboard changed hands. As usual I was the last to arrive, losing an hour in the process care of the time zone change. Funny what difference 160 miles makes. In Mungumry, the sun comes up about 5:15 and goes down about 8:15. 80 miles to the east, everything is put on hold for an hour. Anyway, by the time I got to Madison, vultures Moleta and Coker had already devoured enough cardboard to sole an army of shoes. Still Mark Argo had plenty in reserve so that my appetite was not left wanting. I managed to consume about 65 or so hits to the 58 list, 7 hits to the 70 list (down to 3), about 10 hits to the 71 list (down to 23), about the same number to the 72 list (now under a 100) and a few miscellaneous hits to various lists. I was proud however that I stuck to my budget (first time for everything) and left with gas money in my pocket. Mark provided not only boxes to dig through but also packs of old stuff in OBC condition as favors. Anticipating 6 to show up he gave each of us two. Let me tell ya, I got 7 hits to the 57 list from the combined 6 packets. We just opened those suckers up and passed them around and took anything we needed. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Mark also had gotten some touristy group stuff packets put out by the local COC (chamber of commerce) and gave us each one. Inside (or more technically correct, clipped to the outside) was a coupon good for a free lunch at the little cafe on the corner, where a back room had also been reserved for us. I chowed down on greens (thats turnip greens for the unenlightened), rutabagas (you know them yaller turnips), peas and beans. Got my energy up for the real fun. After lunch we retired to the back room to rummage through the dups boxes. James had brought a nice bundle prepackaged for me with a 71 Seaver and a 33 Goudey plus a bunch of hits to various lists. He and I swapped 67 stacks and each pulled a bunch from the other's. Jerry dealt a huge hit to my 84 set and also hit the 59 list and 54 Bowman list. In the confusion after getting home I kinda scrambled the days haul so I know there's somebody's stuff I'm forgetting about (yours Jerry); but you get the picture. Mark suggested that we do an OBC tourist group thing that the COC could host. There are about 12 of us within reasonable distance of Madison. Mark suggested that we come as a group large enough to get group rates on accomodations and do an overnight thing. Madison is a wife's dream with boutiques, antique shops, old homes and little eateries. While the guys mull over cardboard, the women could do their thing. Sounds good to me!! The other part of the COC package was coupons good for free gifts (used as calming influences upon return to home). I think the Madison thing has potential. We'd even welcome those from outside area who JUST HAPPENED TO BE IN THE AREA. Well I've gone on far too long (don't see how Morganti can keep up this pace on a weekly basis; he ought to be doing a regular column for Till next Madison this is ================= To: Subject: A Little More Little League Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 15:00:45 -0400 From: "Rick Redpath" Everyone has been asking me how the Little League season ended. (All right, 2 guys asked and I think one was just being polite, but that's enough encouragement for me.) And by the way, let me welcome to the program all of you lucky guys driving out to Cleveland today. That was good thinking bringing along the wireless internet hookup, so you could access your email from the car. Just put the cruise control on and enjoy the story... The Needham Mass. AA Little League season ended one week ago, the same day that school ended in our town. Actually the regular season was cut short and ended 2 weeks prior to that, to allow enough time for a playoff tournament. I'm happy to report that the Burlington Bees (the favorite team in my family), on the strength of some expert Assistant Coaching, made it into the first round of playoffs. I'm also happy to report that all the other 17 teams made it into the playoffs too! But I'm getting ahead of myself a Despite that excellent Assistant Coaching I mentioned earlier, the Bees lost 2 of their last 3 games and ended the abbreviated season with a 6-7 record. I was thinking and hoping that our team would win as many games as we lost this year, and I have no doubts that we could have done that if we had been lucky enough to play an even number of games... A .500 record seemed like a good goal for a bunch of mostly 9 year-olds. You might remember that this was Dick Williams's goal for the 1967 Red Sox, and look what happened to them. But at least we got to play 13 games, and that was enough to ensure that everyone on the team had a chance to earn a much-deserved and much-admired game ball. Sometimes you have to stretch just a little to find an excuse for awarding a prize like this to some of the kids. One of the boys got one for being hit in the back by a pitch (it's a reduced injury ball, not TOO hard), getting to his feet, eventually, and trotting down to first base. Way to shake it off, Max! The Bees 6-7 record placed them smack in the middle, 9th place out of 18 teams (Hall of Mediocrity here we come!), and earned them the honor of playing the Number 1 seed -- the Jupiter Hammerheads -- in the first playoff game. The Hammerheads just happened to be coached by the guy who was the Director of the AA league this year, and his team just happened to have 12 boys on it, all of whom could catch and run and throw and field and hit AND resist the urge to play in the dirt in the outfield. Hmmm, could this guy have been touch with a some advance scouting reports before putting his team together??? Anyway, I think the Bees put a scare into the Hammerheads by jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Had that score held up, well the Bees could have won the game 1-0. Sadly, though, it was just our part of the score that help up over 6 innings, and the Bees were eliminated 10-1. Maybe it was the one week layover between the final season game and the first playoff game that made our guys a little rusty. All but one of the other teams had to scramble and make up at least one rainout game from earlier in the season, but the Bees just sat around for 7 days. Maybe we could have used one more practice session to work on the finer points of the game. Stuff like: You're playing second base and a ground ball is hit RIGHT at you. Do you, A: Keep you glove down and scoop up the ball? or B: Run as fast as you can to cover second base? Anybody? Or this: When is the most opportune time to drop your glove on the grass and tuck in your shirt when you're playing Right Field? When, that is, besides just after the pitcher throws a pitch and the opposing batter launches a laser-beam line drive to Right Field??? Even at this level, baseball is a game of inches... As for the Hammerheads, yes, they went on to win 2 more games and made it to the championship game, where they faced the #2 team, the Beloit Snappers, and lost 13-5. And for the record, the Bees scored 10 runs against the Snappers when they played them this season (never mind that they gave up 28 runs in the process), so, to me, this was sort of a victory for us. Maybe. Either way it was a great year! That's it for now, see you next April :-) - Rick ================= To: Subject: book finally done time to celebrate OBC style Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 23:30:23 -0400 From: "Robert Fitts" Hi all After about 6 months of hard work I finally finished by book on Japanese baseball. If anybody wants starter sets just ask (topps, UD, score). 1962 doubles (just ask and they're yours) 9 27 34 35 52 56 64 68 81 82 84 95 103 115 130 148 165 184 193 205 220 245 265 1961 doubles 7 9 14 90 152 157 185 196 205 209 250 263 269 280 285 357 380 391 420 470 rob fitts http://www.robsjapanesecards.com ================= To: "OBC Ramblings (E-mail)" , "Tigers Mailing List (E-mail)" Subject: GlennCam Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 23:13:24 +0100 From: Glenn Codere My apologies for the fact that this request is not related to either the Tigers or to baseball cards, but I find myself in need of a little I'm attempting to set up a streaming video webcam so that our housewarming party on August 11 can be "attended" by many of our friends throughout the world. Now, as far as I'm concerned, everything seems to be working fine at this end. Unfortunately, I've had 2 friends try to access the camera, only to be met with the message "..cam is off, Check back again please". I'm wondering if the problem lies with their connection speed. Could any of you guys (especially those of you with a high speed connection) try accessing the GlennCam by clicking on this link: http://www.geocities.com/glenncodere/glenncam/stream.txt ....and let me know what happens. The software I'm using is Webcam32. If any of you are familiar with this software, and have some inkling of what might be going wrong, I'd appreciate some help! Cheers for now! ps It's 11:10GMT at the moment. I'll be here for the next 45 minutes or so. ================= To: "OBC Ramblings (E-mail)" , "Tigers Mailing List (E-mail)" Subject: GlennCam (Part Deux) Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 06:46:22 +0100 From: Glenn Codere Once again, my apologies. Very shortly after sending my "webcam help" message last night, a small crisis meant that I had to shut down The webcam is now back up and running, and although I'm not actually present (I'm off to work in 10 minutes), I've placed a ticking clock in front of it so that there is some movement. Please read my earlier email, and let me know how things go! ================= Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 14:29:09 EDT Subject: Bon voyage present! To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: Jrhatchjr@aol.com Hi all, A quick thank you to Bob D'Angelo who pitches in with a couple of sharp 1973's for my newest cause. My favorite is that of Jerry Morales (#268) who shows off those splendid early to mid 1970's Padres uniforms...it's enough to make the Swingin' Friar himself cringe! Thanks Bob! Tomorrow, I leave for a week long cruise to Bermuda. This will be my first third Bermuda loop but the first with Celebrity Cruises, which I've heard nothing but good things about. Don't worry, though...I'm having someone empty the mailbox each day while I'm gone ;-) Here's wishing the folks in Cleveland a great time and wishing everyone a safe holiday week. Happy Collecting! ================= Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2001 00:39:39 -0400 (EDT) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: On the road again..... From: Neal Thomas ....just can't wait to get on the road again..... I am heading out of town tomorrow (after my softball game of course!) for a week on the beach (Ocean City, MD) filled with playing on the beach with the boys, fishing, sipping a few cold ones, reading a book or two, and generally being a lazy slug and gaining ten punds or so. What could be better. I may have email access, but if you don't hear back from me, I will catch up with you next weekend. Enjoy the 4th! ================= Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2001 20:37:49 EDT Subject: Some OBC technical help needed To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: malsman250@cs.com Had a good time at the National today, and enjoyed meeting quite a few of the OBC tribe. I'm sorry that I couldn't stay for the swap session, but my friends (and especially my friend's son) were ready to go home at the end of the day. I made a true OBC-type purchase - two disintegrating scrapbooks of baseball cards for $60. There are about 300 or so cards, most 58s and 54 Bowmans, with a few others thrown in. Lots of commons, but a few decent cards including some 55 umpires. Some of the cards are in great shape, except for being pasted on pages. So the question - how do I get them off the pages, and/or get the glue residue off the backs? Many are pretty loose already, but they come off with a little residue. I know that we have had this discussion before, so I'm sure that the OBC technical committee can provide the answers. And then the next question - do I send all these out, or do I start the 58 set? (I'm sure I can pick up that #1 card cheap.....) ================= To: Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Some OBC technical help needed Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2001 20:13:31 -0700 From: "Geordie Calvert" the glue residue question comes up now and again. Maybe this would be a good subject for someone knowledgeable to write about for the OBC site. Surely there are others out there that have the same question and would be grateful for the tips. ----- Original Message ----- From: malsman250@cs.com To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2001 5:37 PM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Some OBC technical help needed Had a good time at the National today, and enjoyed meeting quite a few ofthe OBC tribe.
